Thank you to DJ Mitcho for letting us know that former Warriors Laupepa Letuli and Melila Purcell III signed with the Arena Football League’s Spokane Shock.

Here’s the link: Signings.

Oceanic and UH are expected to announce pay-per-view plans as early as Monday. This is the first academic year Oceanic will have exclusive  primary rights to UH sportscasts.

Oceanic has completed its production staff, with Steve Jackson — a highly regarded do-everything worker at KFVE — joining the cable outlet as coordinating producer. Earlier, Candace Fujishima, who was a KFVE director, signed up with Oceanic.

The running back is J.R. Abad, who was on the spring roster. He is not on the 120-player roster, but is working out in the hope there will be an opening.

Former UH linebacker Blaze Soares said the shoulder injury he suffered in last week’s game in Japan “is no big deal.” He missed the second half after he was struck by an opponent’s helmet.

Soares, who earned a bachelor’s degree in December, has been working as an entertainment coordinator, among other things, in recent months.

Soares has always been one of the toughest Warriors. He played one UH season despite a shoulder injury that prevented him from raising his arm. He also made a successful comeback after suffering an achilles’ injury.

I will be on the Big Island next week, but will find out one way or another.

    Cheers!

  11. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 7:36 am

    ‘Gmorning gang!

gigi- where will you stay on the Big Island? Kona side?

Alnbama- now that’s dedication and commitment if I’ve ever seen it! Hope you’re enjoying yourself in Orlando.

    DPK- How you, Hawaiian!

  16. Slugger July 15, 2011 7:46 am

    Good morning, gang!

PPV on Oceanic and the S-A…

    Hi, DPK!

    Hi, ST!

Morning, A-Joe! Kuahiwi Ranch might be selling beef at the KCC Farmer’s Market tomorrow.

  18. A-joe July 15, 2011 7:47 am

ST- Great to hear about the production crew but, has Oceanic settled on their on air talents yet?

  19. haka July 15, 2011 7:50 am

    Howzit DPK,

Eh, I see you been eating out a lot. Don’t make me call your doctor. 😉

  20. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 7:52 am

    They are finalizing the talent.

All signs point to splitting up assignments. It does not appear, at this time, that there will be one person doing all of the UH sports.

  21. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 7:52 am

    Top 25?

    I coulda been a contenter.

  22. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 7:54 am

  24. haka July 15, 2011 7:57 am

  25. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 7:57 am

ST, I hope there’s a spot for Jim Leahey.

Another Tsaiko told me she does not like his voice, but I think it’s very pleasant to listen to.

    Very sonorous.

  26. A-joe July 15, 2011 7:58 am

gigi- Awesomeness! Hope you have a nice time relaxing and taking in all the wonderful charms of the Big Island. =)

    Gigi:

    Checking dictionary …

  28. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 8:00 am

ST, apparently there are several ways to pronounce sonorous.

Accent on 1st or 2nd syllable? Take your pick.

  29. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:00 am

    1. giving out or capable of giving out a sound, especially a deep, resonant sound, as a thing or place: a sonorous cavern.

    2. loud, deep, or resonant, as a sound.

    3. rich and full in sound, as language or verse.

  30. tommui July 15, 2011 8:00 am

I know some people used to listen to Curren/Kekaula while watching the TV.

    Can’t understand why.

Unless it has to do with Jim’s mistakes on IDs of the players.

  34. A-joe July 15, 2011 8:04 am

    Balderdash Definition-

    Sonorous: A Narcoleptic Dinosaur.

  35. haka July 15, 2011 8:05 am

    Who should the announcers be?

    And the sidekicks?

    For sure, I like:

    Jim Leahy = Football, Baseball

    Pal Eldredge = Baseball

    Chris McLaughlin = Volleyball

    Artie Wilson = Basketball

  36. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:08 am

dave reardon’s article this am about mc greenwood’s idiomatic response to mac’s salary, “it is what it is” I found to be more sublime than figurative. after all, when it comes down to a generous housing allowance for our manoa boss, “It is what it is”.

  39. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:10 am

One thing certain we know about what coach tomey will do on special teams…. we dont know. his recent meeting with the iconic frank beamer of virginia tech, college special teams guru, may hold a clue–that this old tiger, aka as dick tomey, is poised to learn “new” tricks. and, for those of you that traditionally plan your whizz-break during special team play–hold, and count to ten. otherwise, you may miss something very special.

  40. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 8:10 am

  43. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 8:12 am

I think Jim should do an arena sport where ID of the players is easier.

Leave football to someone with better vision.

  44. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:14 am

    Answer: Sonorous.

Question: What do you say when Sonor asked whom the present was from.

  45. haka July 15, 2011 8:14 am

I understand the frustration with Jim Leahey, but I think he is and has to be a part of UH sports. He just needs to stay focused with his strong sport(s) at this stage. Kanoa is the next generation and will do well.

  46. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 8:15 am

#44 ST, don’t quit your day job.:)

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid July 15, 2011 8:18 am

  50. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:20 am

    ST:

that could fit but not in this context, mc was dodging more than flinging. lol.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid July 15, 2011 8:22 am

sonorous: 1. inclined to use sonar. 2. subjected to sonar.

  52. Da Punchbowl Kid July 15, 2011 8:25 am

balderdash: A competition to see who can grow bald first.

  53. Da Punchbowl Kid July 15, 2011 8:26 am

    BTW – bulla wins!

  54. Old Diver July 15, 2011 8:28 am

Interesting UH budget comparisons by Reardon this morning. The UH overall system wide budget is one thousand four hundred million dollars. Taxpayer subsidies amount to three hundred sixty million and the athletic departments budget is thirty million dollars.

  55. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 8:28 am

DPK, is bulla really bald or is he just clean shaven?

I never could tell the difference with him.

  56. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:30 am

People generally don’t like change. I think elements of KFVE need to be incorporated into Oceanic. Thus, the hiring of Fujishima and Jackson, for starters.

  57. A-joe July 15, 2011 8:30 am

    40- papajoe-

You’re right! I stand corrected. Upon further review the definition states:

-A caveman’s reaction to a good Brontosaurus Burger.

    Synonym: Kanakasaurus Attack.

  58. huh? July 15, 2011 8:32 am

    Picture:

say you are the beat writer for oregon, washington, boise or whomever, and you cover the hometown football team rabidly. you write story. you post pictures. you post them on your blog daily.

most of the time the pictures and stories give the public a behind the scene look of whats going in within the football team even at different times of the year-offseason, spring, inseason, presason, postseason. what the beat writers are doing is putting the team under a microscope. what the beat writers are doing by posting on their blogs are opening the door for anyone in the world to see of whats going on . its their domain, with all due respect to the hometeam they are covering. this is good.

the role of the beat writers can generate a lot of interest in a team, players and coaches. the beat writer writes reports (blog entries) of what he sees, and in some cases some beat writers take pictures of players and other objects of what they sees–i.e., so and so benched this amount, so and so caught spectacular passes in 7 on 7 drills, so and so from an nfl team is helping the players or posting a picture of an so and so orange resting on the field etc. this is basic fare, smooth, unscrutable, digestable,

for the most part the football beat writers covering their hometown football teams can filter in or filter out whatever they want on their blogs. they can write whatever script they want.

why, then, on this green earth when leaving an indeliable impression on people is coveted would a beat writer expose a picture of the hometown football team that shines them in a bad light? why? it doesn’t make sense. the hometown football team shouldnt be the recepeint of pictures that disgrace them. further, the beatwriter should know that for every action that he undertakes theres a reaction. stick to the basic fare. the hometown team should be spared of the papparrazzi like (at times) beat writer in their pressence.

  59. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:35 am

I think Kanakasaurus Attack should be the nickname for a defensive scheme.

    Or a restaurant.

  60. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 8:36 am

ST, are you using your new camera now?

Pics are very clear and colorful.

  61. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 8:38 am

The WAC is trying to “upgrade” their basketball programs. That probably is the way to go since they only have 7 football playing members. Still though, if a decent WAC football team schedules weak non-conference opponents (who could be weaker?) and goes undefeated, will they still get an BCS bid? Does the non football teams in the WAC get the football money too? In basketball, with 2 or 3 good recruits added to the returning players, a WAC team may have the makings to get to the big dance. They need more than 1 team in it though. With 2 teams and a couple of victories in the tournament, they maybe making some good money. Just thinking out loud. Still glad the UH made their move though.

  62. LizKauai July 15, 2011 8:38 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Well, if Oceanic keeps a MONOPOLY on UH Sports, PPV will have a whole new meaning for us non-Oceanic folks. Hopefully this is only for one year.

Papa Leahey – I love the spirit he brings to the broadcast. He is largely focused on the positive- from both sides of the line. I do not want to see him go quietly into the Manoa night just yet.

I love RK but find the radio broadcast to be sometimes more on the curmudgeonly side. Not my fave.

ALTHOUGH… Kauai will have the ability to hear the radio games this year… YEA!!!

  63. BG July 15, 2011 8:41 am

    Good morning folks!

    It’s Aloha Friday!

  64. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:42 am

yeah, reardon made it sound like the uhad budget at manoa in contrast to the overall uh statewide budget was “one scoop rice” at a sumo communal lunch.

  65. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:42 am

    Liz:

    Isn’t Oceanic available on Kauai?

  66. BG July 15, 2011 8:43 am

    Hi Liz!

  67. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 8:44 am

LizK, I guess you either gotta come here for some live games or JJ’s Broiler? I hope you find a way.

  68. HEINEKEN July 15, 2011 8:45 am

I think Kanoa Leahy and Howard Dashefsky could do a good job……To tell you the truth I don’t like Jim Leahy……Alot of times he talks against Hawai’i and always gives alot of positives from the opposing teams….And if PPV is over $40-50 then they can shut the front door ..At least I been getting free tickets for the past 4 years..Hopefully I am off from work to go to every game this year

  69. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:45 am

    papajoe:

I think WAC’s problem is there aren’t very many Division I schools in the West.

Always said Benson is playing Moneyball; he worked to get Nevada, Boise State, etc., into the WAC.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to keep them.

  70. BG July 15, 2011 8:48 am

I decided to purchase a slingbox to make sure I have access to the UH games even when Betty and I are in Alaska. I know the season opener is on ESPN2 but I’m taking no chances. If I have to, I’ll watch it on my android. Glad I remembered what Garret wrote about slingboxes about a year or two ago.

  71. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:48 am

    Heineken:

It’s always better to see a football game live, especially with this offense.

I think men’s volleyball also is better live. The game is so fast, that the only way to capture the action is with a farther-away, wide-angled shot. But then you can’t see the players’ faces. If you shoot close up, you miss the action.

  72. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:49 am

    Slingboxes are a good option.

It sure is pricey to be a UH fan these days.

  73. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 8:52 am

It’s the new camera, but I haven’t figured out how to use all of the adjustments.

  74. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:53 am

ST (our ubiquitous reporter on-the-scene), dont show pics of our athletes scaling fences to practice on the grass field–competitive recruiters love it and use it. unless you r taking pics of fence climbers 60 miles south of tuscon…..but, even that is more dangerous 🙂

  75. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 8:54 am

With only 7 WAC football teams, they need to find 6 out of conference opponents each to fill out a 12 game schedule. Some conferences only need 2 OC opponents. Looks like the Warriors may have found the solution for their 2012 opponent in the WAC. Even for years to come, if the WAC doesn’t expand their football size, then OC opponents may be within reach. Unless the WAC blackballs the 4 escapees.

  76. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 8:54 am

I think we will buy PPV again this year.

If anyone wants to split the cost with us, please leave a comment on my blog by clicking on my name.

  82. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 9:07 am

When I took an a team in another sport to Idaho a few years back, an Idaho coach said that all public parks are open to everyone at any time. We could go to any park and practice, even high schools fields. In Hawaii, a lot of the parks are fenced in, especially the school fields. The football players would have no problem in Idaho finding somewhere to practice. What if they put polls with locks at the entrance of the field to keep out vehicles, but students could use the field. Of course, they hired the NFL guy to fix the field a few years back and if they open it up, it might get messed up.

Really? I think I know what you mean, but for me (and others) he cannot keep up with the pace of football, bball, and vball anymore and even sometimes baseball and softball too.

The miscue on names is the worst. I cannot stand it when people cannot get people’s names correct when your job is to vocalize what you are watching. As a voice for UH sports, the BASIC function of getting people’s names shouldn’t be in question.

Speaking to him in person though, he is still sharp as a knife and anyone can banter all day long about sports with him. He DOES have a great memory and can hold good conversations.

I guess as you get older, when the lights go on, they get too bright.

  87. al July 15, 2011 9:16 am

i have a hunch that papa leahey will be hired a sport or two. (he’s not as grouchy these days)

    probably football and baseball.

for football i’d really enjoy having the big guy paired with him.

pal and papa leahey are a great match still in baseball.

i’d like to see kanoa take over the mike for basketball. i believe that he and artie could make a great pair.

volleyball is up for grabs. mclachlin is a good call as the color man.

  88. al July 15, 2011 9:18 am

some of the blame for misidentification has to be attributed to the spotters not performing.

Trust me, there won’t be locked fences or band camps interfering with workouts next year.

  92. Couch potato July 15, 2011 9:19 am

the problem is when long rallies in volleyball occurs, jim gets all mixed up.

  93. Couch potato July 15, 2011 9:20 am

i’ve seen things happen for no reason at all.

  94. al July 15, 2011 9:20 am

if i didn’t know better i’d think his build resembles that of a running back or linebacker.

  95. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:22 am

I think in volleyball, because the action is so fast and it’s televised, it’s not important to name everyone who touches the volleyball.

Then again, what do I know?

Discount tickets (50 yd line) for San Jose St. road game.

I have 50 yard line seats; about 15 rows up, behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each; group rate–and I have 15 tickets left. All together we will have 100 Warrior fans sitting in these 4 rows, from row 12 to 15; with a possible 200 more UH fans behind us. You can’t get these kine seats at any other stadium. Watch them perform the haka right in front of us–a definite chicken skin moment! This will be the last game at San Jose on Oct. 14, 6pm–a friday nite game!

  105. Couch potato July 15, 2011 9:28 am

    he should be the

  106. kruzen July 15, 2011 9:28 am

I thought on Makule Mondays radio show, Jim Leahy said that he was not going to be apart of the Oceanic broadcast of UH sports.

  107. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:28 am

In passing drills, the running back doesn’t really have a significant role. So where he stands isn’t important to the play.

  108. HEINEKEN July 15, 2011 9:28 am

Also are we running the Pistol?

  109. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:31 am

    Heineken:

His mother told UH the transcripts would arrive today.

    Seeing is believing.

    He’s an enigma.

If you talk to him, he says the right things and he’s very enthusiastic. Then again, I’ve only spoken with him a few times. Like I said, I don’t think I’m high on his to-do list.

  110. (Jesse)James July 15, 2011 9:31 am

Good morning Tsaikos…another busy day so I’ll have to do an esme and jump in and then out….

Two things…Anyone see the story about HF in the paper as being appointed Asst. Athletics Director or something like that at Syracuse…??? Sheesh, they make it sound like he was the reason for everything good at UH….Calm down now Kevin and A-House…

The second thing is if anyone would be interested in helping a friend of mine who has ovarian cancer. Her cousin is doing the Relay for Life in Hilo tomorrow I believe and is looking to raise $100 for the cause. I’ll post her webpage here in case anyone wants to donate. Thanks.

    http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY11National?px=22260780&pg=personal&fr_id=31949

Hope everyone has a good day!!! Now, I’m going back to work.

  111. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:32 am

One more thing about Jim Leahey is his choice words for certain aspects of what happens at a live UH game.

Sorry, but he is out of touch with what is happening today.

He belittled “spiderman” on TV, calling him classless for essentially dancing, while waving his okole at another team. Now, I guess by the KGB’s standard this is considered crude, but more people laugh and get a kick out of it than some realize and in doing so, he further alienates views of a certain demographic. Duke fans, old and young, would rip him apart if he was calling the Duke game when “speedo man” debuted, but that’s Duke and these are Hawaii fans, and that is another topic in itself.

When volleyball player Jarod Lofy got a mohawk in his freshman year, he and Mclaughlin called him “selfish” and called it “messy”, again playing the part of the nun with the ruler in hand. Unnecessary and further isolates the image of UH viewership on K-5 i.e. the McDonald’s 6am posse.

What was the saying, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Too much time is spent on him making his comments on matters like these which are NON-ISSUES and has no bearing on what he is covering and that is athletic competition.

Everyone talks about UH appealing to a younger audience for the future, well, all of what I mentioned and then some is NOT a good way to do it.

  112. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:35 am

I think it’s a symmetrical formation, but the Pistol is different in concept from the four-wide offense.

Besides, there’s not much variation to UH’s formations the past 12 years. If the ball is in the middle, it’s a balanced formation. If the ball is on the right hash, it’s three receivers on the left side. If the ball is on the left hash, it’s three receivers on the right side.

Now, what they do out of the formations is the complicated part.

  113. koakane July 15, 2011 9:35 am

good alojah friday warrior country. nice day here in the 808. play nice at work den when pau hana go give um gang.

checking out something affecting one of the tsaiko’s. if confirmed will post latter on today or tomorrow.

    aloha

  114. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:36 am

“Says the right things and enthusiastic…”

    Sounds familiar.

  115. HEINEKEN July 15, 2011 9:38 am

    ST:

LOL when you post Forcier is on campus sometime in the next1-5 days….can you put “I like to dedicate this blog to Heineken”

  116. madeinhawaii July 15, 2011 9:39 am

I thought Hawaiian Telcom was striking a deal to broadcast some of the games alongside Oceanic? Maybe that was just for internet streaming.

  117. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:39 am

    Couch potato:

    July 15th, 2011 at 9:24 am

even players on the bench get credited for a dig or kill. lol

Players whos NCAA eligibility ran out years ago are also credited.

  118. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:41 am

I’m pretty sure I have ADD, anyway, so I have a hard time watching telecasts all the way.

But I find Leahey to be entertaining, and that’s pretty much all I want out of telecast.

  119. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 9:43 am

    Poor Jim Leahey.

After reading all of the above, it seems maybe he has reached the end of the line.

He was the sonorous voice of UH sports for the longest time.

  120. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:43 am

    Heineken:

    Absolutely.

I’m not sure what the problem is. It sounds like this is a mutually good arrangement for the player and the team. Then again, I don’t know the full details of his academic and personal situation.

  121. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 9:45 am

I used to watch Leahey & Leahey every week, but haven’t lately.

Too bad Kanoa doesn’t have Jim’s voice.

Somehow, he sounds like a kid with his tenor voice.

  122. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 9:46 am

I think people root for Kanoa because, in a way, they’re hoping for a younger version of Jim.

I don’t get to watch his telecasts very often, which is why I get a different perspective. But whenever I eat with Jim, we have a lot of laughs and arguments and I learn a lot.

  123. al July 15, 2011 9:52 am

jim could do commercials for jack’s.

  124. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:52 am

If Oceanic is really planning an all-UH channel, they can still have Jim Leahey as an important part of UH athletic broadcasts. A host, perhaps of pre-game segments, maybe the featured individual for a UH-branded sports talk show. I think Jim Leahey is EXCELLENT in a taped setting like how he and Kanoa are for the L&L Show on PBS which I still enjoy.

Also, expand his presence. Make him the point man and the #1 priority when it comes to hosting UH-related programs like the Na Koa telethon or any TV specials on UH athletics. I’m a Liz Chun fan, and this might sound hypocritical but maybe examine Jim Leahey hosting the Coach Mack Show???

Jim Leahey still has MUCH to offer and I do miss L&L on the radio ala the AM1500 days. Very witty and funny.

  125. al July 15, 2011 9:53 am

you are right about kanoa. let the legacy live on, i say.

i’ve been listening to leaheys ever since i got that crystal radio set.

  126. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:54 am

Personally, I’ve recently taken the time to listen to Kanoa’s broadcasts of basketball games and he is not his father, but the important thing is he is himself and in that he is good.

Maybe the next one to move on up ala Neil Everett?

Kanoa will no doubt carry on the Leahey legacy in his own way with respect to what his father and grandfather did for UH athletics.

    I look forward to it.

  127. Kevin July 15, 2011 9:55 am

I like the fried rice at Jack’s.

  128. al July 15, 2011 9:55 am

    kevin the kazzer…100%!!!

  129. HEINEKEN July 15, 2011 9:56 am

    ST:

Thanks And if Jim leaves Kanoa will step up…..High School football and Fridays and College football on saturdays(someone can replace him for High School if there is on saturdays) I believe he already is part of the staff for oceanic and at least he can get all polynesian names announced correctly and he may throw in a couple “Katoosh” after some big hits

  130. al July 15, 2011 9:56 am

    jack’s grilled biscuits!

    corned beef hash.

  131. al July 15, 2011 9:58 am

    kanoa and kekaula!

    or kekaula and kanoa?

    k and k show time.

that would make for a great setup.

  132. al July 15, 2011 9:59 am

don’t get me wrong. i think bobby curran does a good job with the play by play. however, i don’t think his present contract would allow him to leave the morning show and the p by p.

  133. madeinhawaii July 15, 2011 10:03 am

Maybe somebody already posted this… dunno.. but it looks like Nagamine (Wahine Soccer’s new coach) is off to a ‘running’ start with her first group of recruits …

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/7/15/WSOC_0715114602.aspx?path=wsoc

Also, women’s basketball head coach Dana Takahara-Dias announced the hiring of Lindsey Baker as Director of Operations for the Rainbow Wahine.

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/7/15/WBB_0715113424.aspx

Hopefully all the stars will align for Warrior/Wahine/Rainbow sports this upcoming school year.

  134. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:04 am

    I don’t envision Oceanic hiring a play-by-play person as a full-time employee.

It probably will be a la carte, as it is now with high school sports.

  135. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:06 am

    MIH:

    Thanks for the links.

  136. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 10:08 am

My husband looooves high school football on OC16.

Maybe, some of his enthusiasm will rub off on me one of these days.

But right now, I don’t have patience for it.

  137. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:08 am

By the way, didn’t mean to demean band camp.

It’s actually an interesting thing watching the kids play while marching. I wonder how the choreographer comes up with the routines? Now that’s a big-picture person.

  138. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:09 am

I used to think it would be nice if Oceanic built its own stadium, turning it into, essentially, an outdoor studio.

Then somebody mentioned that Mililani High serves that purpose.

  139. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:12 am

    Back to my workout photo:

The players are doing the “ladder” drill. The interesting thing is they’re all doing it rapidly. That takes a lot of coordination. If one guy trips, it could become falling dominos.

Credit Grant Steen, the assistant strength coordinator, for supervising these supervised workouts.

  140. Couch potato July 15, 2011 10:12 am

thanks for the soccer link madeinhawaii. looking good for the Wahine soccer program!

  141. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 10:13 am

oh, is that what the guys are doing?

I thought they were dancing the electric slide.

  142. SteveM July 15, 2011 10:16 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Good pix ST.

  143. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:17 am

There’s also a policy that if a newcomer misses a class, all of the newcomers have to do rolls.

    Nobody is missing class.

  144. Couch potato July 15, 2011 10:17 am

st. you should use the movie feature on your camera, if get. would be good to see at least a couple of vids. just remember to bring extra power supply for your camera.

  145. Couch potato July 15, 2011 10:17 am

like you know how to do the electric slide. lol

  146. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 10:19 am

can’t dance the electric slide, but love to watch it.

  147. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:19 am

    Couch:

I can shoot video, but I have to wait for ScottM to be free to show me how to upload it to the blog.

  148. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:20 am

We were reminded yesterday that this upcoming fall and spring sports season will represent 40 YEARS OF RAINBOW WAHINE ATHLETICS. They’re planning an all-Rainbow Wahine sports banquet at the end of the year. Pretty sure it means end of the spring and not in December.

Obviously all Wahine programs are not that old, softball will be in it’s 28th year and track and field and cross country are the newest to date. It’s a collective 40 years.

  149. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:20 am

I’m not high on ScottM’s to-do list, either.

  150. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:21 am

    Al,

Never tried anything else at Jack’s. Best fried rice I ate. Mililani Restaurant’s podagee sausage fried rice is killerz too.

  151. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 10:21 am

Thanks Kazz, uh, I mean, Kevin. Just can’t get used to your new screen name.

  152. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:22 am

Speaking of electric slide…. it’s bon dance ‘season’.

  153. Old School Dave July 15, 2011 10:22 am

Stephen: Do you know if there will still be delayed day after or TV broadcasts of UH football games?

Was on campus yesterday on business. The grass practice fields look really nice. Back in the day there used to be rocks and a concrete give on the old grass field. Before that it was a dirt parking lot.

  154. Old School Dave July 15, 2011 10:24 am

Unsupervised summer workouts have come a long way at UH. Back in 99, UH QB Dan Robinson was throwing passes to the student managers.

  155. Couch potato July 15, 2011 10:27 am

you should text and call ScottM constantly. the irritation will be effective and you’ll be on his to-do list asap.

  156. Couch potato July 15, 2011 10:28 am

    ScottM and SteveM related?

  157. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:33 am

On a side note, UH fans and supporters should feel MORE than confident that our AD Jim Donovan stressed the importance about NCAA compliance with all booster organizations and members.

It was a coincidence that GA Tech got slammed on the same day as the AKA Compliance Meeting.

JD essentially laid it out in simple terms:

“We’re a D1 athletic program in the middle of the Pacific and is a constant financial challenge in itself so we do NOT need any compliance issues with the NCAA”.

Sure it goes without saying, but I think people should also have great confidence in UH’s compliance staff. Compliance is a serious issue and we all need a ‘refresher’ here and there to keep us on our toes.

  158. tommui July 15, 2011 10:42 am

    #149 KEVIN

I understand that there will be something in August celebrating Women’s sports at UH

  159. madeinhawaii July 15, 2011 10:46 am

    Kevin,

I thought we only had one person working the Compliance end of the Athletic Department. Has that changed? Or are we still on a boat without paddles if she gets sick, retires suddenly, or goes on and extended leave?

  160. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:48 am

    Tom,

I saw that too, but pretty sure they said end of the year for the big banquet. Yesterday they said that a banquet in August was for volleyball and basketball I think. They were kind of giving a quick rundown with not too much detail. Kind of like a “heads-up”.

  161. al July 15, 2011 10:48 am

i was surprised a certain blogger even knew what the electric slide was.

  162. al July 15, 2011 10:50 am

    kevin…that’s right.

the japanese bon dance is from where the origins of the electric slide come from.

  163. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:52 am

    Made,

Amanda Paterson now has an official assistant. She was hired a year or two ago. So pretty much two people make up the “staff”.

Well, three I guess since they fall under Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano.

  164. SteveM July 15, 2011 10:54 am

    RE: #157

No relation. I would help ST if I knew how… 🙄

ScottM would help too. ST just hasn’t figured out sufficient bribes yet.

    Me… I’m easy.

  165. Derek July 15, 2011 10:55 am

For me, I think Kanoa Leahey would do a good job for UH men’s basketball for TV. He did a very nice gig at the Diamond Head Classic with Doug Gottlieb for ESPN/ESPN2. As far as color analyst for basketball I’ve gotten stale with Artie Wilson. There doesn’t to be the pizzaz, the energy, the excitement, the flair to bring to the table. I mean he’s not a Dick Vitale. Then again, for many years the UH basketball team was not exciting either. But last year things are a lot more exciting. Do we give Wilson a mulligan? I don’t know. Or, do we give Dickman a chance or bring in Portnoy for TV color.

  166. Kevin July 15, 2011 10:57 am

    Al,

First bon dance I went to blew me away because of the electric slide.

It came out of nowhere. I didn’t understand it.

For about a minute, my face looked like I ate a lemon and I was tilting my head, you know like that thing dogs do when they see something that confuses them.

I have a personal “death penalty” on novelty music more than 6 months old.

  167. Kevin July 15, 2011 11:00 am

    Electric slide…

    I don’t understand it.

I mean you go to a filipino grad party or any kind of filipino party and everyone doesn’t do anything, until that damn song comes and as if it was that music from Weekend At Bernie’s 2, you know, the one that makes the dead guy walk funny, all these people with blank looks on their faces drag themselves to the dance floor and mindlessly move to that thing.

Then when it’s done they go back as if it never happened.

Like being abducted by aliens, 5 minutes of your life disappears and you don’t realize it.

  168. al July 15, 2011 11:13 am

i like to watch the bamboo thingy dance.

  169. al July 15, 2011 11:15 am

i tell my friend…why did you have your kid’s grad party at gold coin in waipahu?

wouldn’t you want something else to eat at a party other than what you eat every day?

like why do i want to go to sekiya’s?

  170. Guy in the office July 15, 2011 11:18 am

Keep bashing the electric slide, and you’ll unleash the fury of the blogmeister!

On a side note, if anyone’s into basketball, you should check out the NCAA Summer League. Got to see Zane Johnson (he hit about 6-7 3’s), Derrick Low, Hauns Brereton, Davis Rozitis, Jullian Sensley, Geremy Robinson, Kyle Pape, etc. Stokes, Thomas and McDaniels were there but their teams weren’t playing. Quality basketball, and you can’t beat the price.

OK, back to Warrior football and the “office.”

  171. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 11:24 am

Sorry I brought it up. lol.

All I said was I thought the guys were dancing the electric slide…

and then Keven goes on and on about it.

    sheesh!

  172. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 11:26 am

Al, in case you didn’t know, hubby and I took ballroom dance classes for almost 10 years and learned various line dances too.

Electric slide was one of them, but I don’t remember how to do it anymore.

It was back in the 1990s, dass why.

  173. Warriorbacker July 15, 2011 11:27 am

    Any sight of Forcier??

  174. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 11:29 am

but just watch all those NFL players who competed on Dancing with the Stars.

2 of them actually won the trophy!

    Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward.

  175. Couch potato July 15, 2011 11:29 am

now now gigi-hawaii, we all read things that you keep repeating. nothing wrong with the electric slide. it’s part of the history of dance. almost like MJ’s thriller. jamon.

  176. Couch potato July 15, 2011 11:32 am

best dwts dancer? hands down Nicole Scherzinger.

  177. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 11:33 am

    I am repetitious.

    Life is repetitious.

    Football practice is repetitious.

  181. jm2375 July 15, 2011 11:38 am

    Howzit Tsaikos!!

    Happy Aloha Friday!!

    Nice pix, ST.

HF to Syracuse? Ha! They deserve each other. (I’m a Hoya, need I say more?)

Derek – aren’t there any better choices for basketball color analyst? I don’t like either, especially Portnoy. His voice is irritating.

Is McLachlin done with coaching vb at Stanford?

Hope Vern Podlewski gets the Asst job, but I’ll miss seeing him on the MPI campus. That will also mean that the MPI will be looking for a new girls varsity coach (at this late date!).

  182. Kevin July 15, 2011 11:41 am

    Bring it on.

But I think ST will appreciate the “Weekend at Bernie’s 2” reference. 😆 😆 😆

  183. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 11:43 am

there he goes again! Hi Kevin!

  184. Kevin July 15, 2011 11:51 am

I’d pull an Abercrombie and ask for the resignation of the following from existance:

    -electric slide (dance and song)

-that song from Billy Ray Cyrus.

    -The Macarena (song and dance)

-The Wave (worn-out crowd thing at sporting events)

-YMCA (song and the thing with the arms, at least calling for removal from sporting events)

-use of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” at sporting events

-Hawaii Stars, not sports related, but I hate that show.

-Brown Bags to Stardom (really? To “stardom”???)

  185. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 12:04 pm

If transcripts get in by today, I’d say we should all be able to smile. Well the Forcier supporters should.

If not hmmmm makes you wonder.

  186. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:04 pm

Sheesh Kevin, why don’t you just say how you feel?

  187. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:07 pm

Ironically 70% of the things you would want eliminated, is what would entice me to go to Oahu, to see the Bows live.

  188. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 12:08 pm

    lol

  189. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:09 pm

BTW Gigi what days are you and Kawika going be in Hilo?

  190. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 12:11 pm

will fly in helicopter over the volcano on monday.

going dine at Cafe Pesto, recommended by d1shima.

  192. papajoe2 July 15, 2011 12:21 pm

When I went on a Pride of Aloha cruise, it seemed like every event started with the electric slide. As the cruise went on, it got irritating. The whole cruise events started with the slide. I don’t do the electric slide and neither did a whole lot of people on the ship. After the first few, it got stale but, they kept on doing it. The same few people was dancing it and along with whatever crew was there at the time of the slide.

  193. Lanaiboy July 15, 2011 12:24 pm

Vote to keep Jim Leahey and Pal Eldridge on UH Baseball. Good chemistry. Different announcers for other sports, though. There’s a reason why Leahey won all the announcing awards during his career. He can convey excitement as well as any other broadcaster around and he also can be outspoken, which is a good thing. Time for him to ease off and let another generation take over.

  194. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 12:27 pm

kawika, do you live in Hilo?

    let’s get together.

    i will email you.

From last night I Posted about the tradition of having police accompany HC’s to the field.

I know Kawika doesn’t favor the idea.

But how do others feel? To me it always looked kool.

The guys’ girlfriend, who wasn’t there, said the he wasn’t acting foolishly and there should have been warning signs there. Anybody smell a lawsuit? Helllooooo???? Do you have to live in Hawaii to know that anything like that is dangerous. Not acting foolishly?? Only a fool would go that close to a blow hole. Warning signs?? That’s privately property. You were trespassing. Venting again. Layers will probably win out though. I hope not. Maybe they should have gone to the Big Island and tried to touch the molten lava. No signs there saying its hot.

The same few people was dancing it and along with whatever crew was there at the time of the slide.

papajoe2 — a small cohesive group can take over a dance or other venue on a ship. Most newer ships have 2-3 dance spots. But I KNOW the Tsai-kos could take over any Karaoke venue, win contests, and the Cruise Director would extend karaoke hours or turn over the keys. 😉

I also see a group of 12 Tsai-kos dominating a few other venues and activities on ships that can still fit through the Panama Canal. Ahhh…can you say “Tsai-ko blog cruise” someday? 😛

For color analysts, I like it when they can identify a scheme live. I think too often, analysts rely heavily on replays. It’s always good to add to what a TV viewer can see, not duplicate it.

Ole Coach Trap got struck with lightning with Kolten.

Haaaaaaad for lightning to strike twice though.

Kolten is in the category of the “perfect storms” this past season:

-Kolten Wong, consistent hitting through all his three years at UH

-Miah Ostrowski, wonderful “debut” last season on the hardcourt

-Jessica Iwata, steady batting #s and national/conference awards and recognition in back to back seasons.

Perfect Storm = Local born talent playing for UH and becoming stars at the D1 level and I don’t mean just being a starter, but really taking over and making waves.

All UH coaches should go after the best available talent they can get WHEREVER they can get it, it’s just a bonus when it’s that perfect combination of local born kids performing so well that takes things up a notch.

Simply going after local kids for the sake of it isn’t the way to go, but I hope all UH coaches understand and don’t completely ignore local possibilites within reason.

    money well spent

police escort bus to stadium shaves minutes off travel time

    provides protection

has contingency plans in place if original traffic route is unnegotiable because of accident etc.

insulates coaches and players from potential harm and threats enroute and on the field

with so many nut cases out there a heavy police presence deters nutcases from executing a threat

#262–Would I call the Stadium office or UH?

  263. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 3:26 pm

    #261,

I want to say that Alabama spends a ton of money on travel…much much more considering they don’t usually travel that far to get to games.

And when they came to Hawaii..I think they paid for police escorts and those big comfy tour buses. I remember seeing the buses and police.

I would think that police would volunteer standing by coach Mack. I mean the chance to be on the field “in the huddle” sorta. That would be so cool.

They might even have to do a lottery system because so many officers would want that chance.

  264. Kevin July 15, 2011 3:27 pm

    gma,

Call UH ticket office. 956-4482. Open at 8am on Monday.

    #261,

Oh wait, Alabama provided police escorts for the Hawaii bus? Nice of them.

    Oh, good for bama.

  267. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2011 3:30 pm

I’ve always thought of TCU being the “little guy” the mid-major program that I cheered for when they played Wisconsin because they were kinda playing for all mid-majors.

But I just dug up this article and it shows the TOP 10 football spending programs who were bowl bound in 2010.

TCU is only $2-4 million behind Wisconsin, Arkansas, S. Carolina, and Florida spending $20,600,000 for their football program. “Little” program on a big budget.

    1. Ohio State, $31,763,036

    2. Alabama, $31,118,134

    3. Notre Dame, $29,490,788

    4. Auburn, $27,911,713

    5. LSU, $25,566,520

    6. Florida, $24,457,557

    7. South Carolina, $22,794,211

    8. Wisconsin, $22,041,491

    9. Arkansas $22,005,014

    10. TCU $20,609,361

  277. Kevin July 15, 2011 3:47 pm

Never believed in that whole “playing for the little guy stuff”. I might have believed it a little, but never bought into it.

I remember when people were cheering for Fresno State to win the CWS, for me I was like “WHY?”

If so-called mid-majors get big time wins against BCS programs, what does it do really for other mid-majors? NOTHING. In public perception??? NOTHING.

Fresno State won the 2008 CWS, not the WAC, not UH, just FSU.

Boise State won several BCS Bowls, NOT the WAC, not UH, just BSU, BUT!!!! We did get a share of that mooohlah so a little different.

  278. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 3:52 pm

    #278,

I kinda agree with except when it comes to say the MWC and our hope to get that AQ status.

You want every single team in the MWC to win all of its OOC games. When they get to in-conference play it doesn’t matter. But the computer polls place a lot of emphasis on that OOC w-l record from what I have been reading.

The MWC lacks in only 1/3 criteria for BCS AQ status. The overall strength of the conference. The bottom fish are just ranked too low. So if the bottom teams could pull themselves up and win OOC games it would help with those numbers. They don’t need to be ranked in the top 25 or the top 50 per se..they just can’t be ranked in the bottom 15-20 etc.

In this sense I always cheer for conference teams when they play against a BCS team or whatever. But it pretty much starts and ends there for me.

  279. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 3:54 pm

The one that really got to me was when people were actually having debates a few years back about whether or not one should cheer for Boise (being a Hawaii fan) because if they went undefeated Boise would go to the BCS and we would get money.

    Wtf seriously lol.

Learned A LOT today about the legal issues surrounding the Aloha Stadium site and passed it along with the contact info to Stephen. Just to let you know one small fact – the lead state agency is the Department of Land and Natural Resources – not the Department of Accounting & General Services even though the latter is the one under which the Stadium is listed.

Off to work – see you all late tonight or early tomorrow night.

Interesting article about how there may not be any money coming after next year for the necessary repairs at Aloha Stadium.

Authority Chairman Kevin Chong Kee said he believes only $125,000 will be available for health-and-safety repairs. But with at least another $100 million in work still on the drawing boards, he said he doesn’t see how the improvements can get done.

He added that the authority has the support of his department, which he said asked the Legislature for more than $23 million for the stadium, but received a little more than $10 million.

With no direction from the administration, Chong Kee said there are no plans for further work at the stadium.

“After the next football season, I don’t think anything is planned,” he said.

Former Comptroller Russ Saito, who served under Lingle, said that even if Abercrombie decides a new stadium is preferred, money must continue to be spent to upgrade and maintain the existing facility. He estimates that a new stadium would take at least 10 years to build.

  305. gigi-hawaii July 15, 2011 7:33 pm

  306. Laura July 15, 2011 7:35 pm

Gigi, unless your hubby is the President of the United States, he does not have to be that accessible. Even Coach Mac is not that accessible when he does go on vacation, I am quite sure.

  307. Laura July 15, 2011 7:38 pm

Gigi, another thing, if your hubby’s boss feels that your hubby is that important that he has to contact your hubby while he is on vacation, then your hubby is way, way, under paid.

  312. homey ℞ July 15, 2011 7:56 pm

It’s called turnover. Before you go on vacation, meet with your counterparts and immediate supervisor and go over the work you are performing and where it can be found. Your boss should know your work assignments. All work documents should be centralized in a drive, folder or work area on the server or individual PC’s as outlined by company procedures. The boss or someone should have admin rights in case your work is password protected so he can have access if needed.

If not then the company has poor security management and poor work related policy and procedures.

My sister and “recently-made-21-yrs. bored nephew” (from Seattle) is coming to visit for a week at the end of August. Staying 8 nights. Sis’s plan: go beach once in a while (that was brother’s plan last year too and he, wife, and mother-in law came over to eat every night and stared at the walls until 2100– sometimes they came at lunch 👿 ). Mom cooks and I’m constantly fuud shopping. Mom figures one of us has to sleep on the floor at home.

Mom’s numba 1 son is adamant… throw everyone on the Pride of America cruising the islands that week. Everyone has a bed, entertainment is free, mom don’t cook, I don’t food shop, sis can hit the beach daily (except Hilo) and nephew can do his 21-year old thing all night in relative safety. Phew!

I am included at the last minute for a price break and bunch of bennies. 😐 Anyway, I’ll be cruising from August 27 and returning September 3 …rolling off the ship in plenty of time for the tailgate and game. But probably won’t be thinkin’ about fuud…

Anyone want to join me? Contact your travel agent or book online. No need passport (ID sufficient).

Pride of America. August 27, 2011.

Chad’s team lost but he set up their first TD.

Nice response from Chad Owens who spent the majority of the first two games shooting himself in the foot trying to do too much. Second chance with the ball in his hands in Montreal, the team that considered him expendable a year ago, Owens busted loose for an 89-yard return to the Montreal 15.

Hello – Really good looking web site, just looking about some of one’s pages, it appears to be a fairly attractive platform you are using right here. I’m currently using WordPress to run a few of my web web sites but seeking to change one of those over to a platform exactly the same as yours just for a trial run. Anything in specific you’d recommend about it?

Hi there! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog. Is it very difficult to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Many thanks

  457. Alcohol Addiction in Cape Town August 7, 2011 4:30 pm

I as well as my friends were reading the nice suggestions on your site and so then I had a terrible feeling I never thanked the web blog owner for those tips. These women ended up absolutely warmed to learn all of them and have quite simply been having fun with those things. Many thanks for really being simply helpful and then for considering this form of important information most people are really desperate to understand about. My personal honest regret for not expressing appreciation to earlier.

I have come to understand that charges for online degree pros tend to be a great value. For example a full 4-year college Degree in Communication from The University of Phoenix Online consists of 60 credits from $515/credit or $30,900. Also American Intercontinental University Online comes with a Bachelors of Business Administration with a whole education course feature of 180 units and a tuition fee of $30,560. Online degree learning has made obtaining your degree much simpler because you can easily earn your degree from the comfort in your home and when you finish working. Thanks for all the tips I have certainly learned from your website.

I see the youthful Peaches Geldof, changing tack a little here, has shed a startling amount of weight just recently. No-one appears alarmed about this but I have to wonder, given her family history of perhaps over-indulgent behaviour, whether this amiable enough young lady is as well as she might be. I do hope she is.

Thanks for your useful article. Other thing is that mesothelioma cancer is generally caused by the breathing of fibres from asbestos fiber, which is a carcinogenic material. It truly is commonly found among employees in the structure industry with long contact with asbestos. It’s also caused by moving into asbestos protected buildings for a long time of time, Genetics plays a huge role, and some individuals are more vulnerable for the risk as compared with others.

Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people think about worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
