Tomorrow is the first day applications may be reviewed for the two soon-to-be-vacated, full-time positions on the UH football coaching staff.
Defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer and linebacker coach Tony Tuioti were told they would not be retained after their contracts expire in March. Both coaches, like all UH-Manoa assistant coaches, are on one-year contracts. They will continue to receive semi-monthly paychecks through March unless they are hired elsewhere before their contracts expire.
There does not appear to be an immediate time frame for filling both positions. The recruiting period, now in a so-called “dead” phase, will not open fully until after the American Football Coaches Association Convention (Jan. 12-15 in Indianapolis). Na Koa is paying for several UH coaches, including Kaumeyer and Tuioti, to attend the convention.
The Rainbow Warriors already have filled many of the slots for the three weekends recruits may take visits leading to the Feb. 5 signing day. The Warriors will conduct the 15 practices of spring training in April, following Manoa’s spring break (March 24-30).

Governor Abercrombie and Interim University President Lassner have authorized administrative leave for salaried employees on either December 24th (Tuesday) OR December 31st (Tuesday), not to exceed eight (8) hours for full-time personnel and four (4) hours for half-time salaried employees. This includes employees who belong to the United Public Workers (Bargaining Unit (BU) 01); the Hawaii Governmental Employees Association (BU 02, 03, 04, 08), the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (BU07), Executive/Managerial administrators, and excluded personnel.
In general, employees who are working on either of the eves (Christmas or New Year) shall be granted administrative leave that must be taken at one time either of the eves (December 24th or December 31st), and cannot be split in any manner. The following exceptions/considerations, however, apply:
1. An employee who is performing a mission-essential/time-sensitive mission and has been directed to work on either eve, may be given equivalent administrative time off on another date prior to the close of the current fiscal year as determined by the respective administrator.
2. For Administrative-Professional-Technical (APT) staff who are contractually eligible for four (4) Supplemental Time Office/Professional Development (STO/PD) days observed during the period of December 26-27/30-31, 2013, you are NOT entitle to take the Governor’s Administrative Leave on December 31, 2013. The administrative leave must be taken on December 24, 2013.
If you have submitted an on-line request for leave for a day that you would like to use the administrative leave, please make sure that you amend your leave request before the ending of the calendar year. It will not be done for you automatically.
You are requested to pay immediate attention to your current leave balance so that you are not placed in a leave forfeiture situation at the end of the calendar year. Please contact Darren Wastell, Human Resources Officer, x690, if there is a possibility that you may.

your #87 from 12/23/13 – perspective does wonders – for example, was it the better OL play the last 4 games or was it the level of talent they faced those same games or both?
if, the OL gained confidence in those games and hopefully it carries over the Spring Ball, then I would view it as a “positive” gain for them provided all under classmen return for 2014 season – if not, filling in the “vacated” slot will be another “work in progress” for Naole come March 2014.

Is it natural that there seems no sense of urgency to fill the football coaching positions? USC has a new coach. Boise State has a new coach. Washington has a new coach. Hawaii? Ah we get to ’em later, these only assistants anyways? Chow’s choices have been uh, strange, BTW. Tommy Lee was pulled out of retirement. Aaron Price seems to have been hired as a favor to a friend. And now, no worries, we going get whoever we get. Just can’t see any way UH football makes it next year. Tough schedule once again. No proven or developing QB. Sheesh. It it tough being a Hawaii fan these days.

I think Reynolds was the perfect guy for the Crewe role.
In his sophomore year at Palm Beach High School, Reynolds was named First Team All State and All Southern as a fullback, and received multiple scholarship offers.[8] After graduating from Palm Beach in West Palm Beach, Reynolds attended Florida State University on a college football scholarship, and played halfback. Reynolds hoped to be named to All-American teams and to have a career in professional football; however, in the first game of the season, Reynolds was injured and a car accident later that year worsened the injury.

What else is Na Koa paying for in 2014? I’m sure it was a “board” decision.
For those who see no “positive” sign for sending TK and TT to the conference, they will begin to question Na Koa’s leadership and may decide to decrease or stop Na Koa contributions. As a board member told me, it’s for the players.
That will be a bad thing for an already financially strapped program.

Glancing over the all-state offense and defense selections, I pondered how many have the “grades” to move to D1 level.
Do UH coaches ever take trips to “intermediate” level schools to deliver the message – no matter how good you are, academics comes first – never to young to start – including parent(s) of athletes – for all sports!

I’m sure that you and Mrs. A-House stressed the importance of education to Masa-Boy and Midori. You didn’t need any coaches to do this, you were raised the right way.

we did stress to them that we would give 100% support for whatever they chose to do – luckily, both did not like smoking, drugs, and alcohol which made things a lot easier – much positive support for both

As for TK and TT going to the convention, I think it fits under the category of “playing nice.” No one can fault them for “lack of effort” or not trying, but situations change and Chow had to make some adjustments to his staff. As someone mentioned, who knows whether they may return to coach at UH in the future under a different regime. Besides, UH could use all the “friends” it can when it gets to improving the view of our football program…Gotta wish these two guys the best.
It is becoming all too common to place more and more responsibility on teachers to teach character in public schools. Total responsibility should be on the student and their parents. Getting paid at an average 55k per year with the additional work load of teaching content knowledge plus dealing with state mandates and being blamed for student misbehavior in classrooms is overwhelming at times. Imagine for every F grade a student receives a meeting lasting hours after work hours for intervention because of lack of responsibility of the parent and student are non existent. The most hated phrase of almost every teacher: “we have to have a meeting.”
Utah OC Dennis Erickson found out about his demotion to RBs coach from the morning newspaper. With Chow’s reliance on the University of Utah, maybe he can convince Erickson or former OC #2 Brian Johnson to coach at UH for a year. I would think that they could rent a nice condo in Waikiki or the Ala Moana area on a salary of $125K (call Artie Wilson).

#53: Aieesoos – You could be right, but I’ve seen stranger hirings on other staffs. As I mentioned, Chow does seem to rely a lot on Utah. Kyle Whittingham’s hiring of the former Wyoming HC has been called a “desperate” measure by the press in Utah. There might be a number of unemployed Utah coaches after next season.

The BOR and the president of UH still haven’t figured out that if you do what is necessary for the football program, it can lead to millions of additional revenue and donations. But instead, it’s cut here, cut there, what’s the lowest amount of money we can pay a coach….

High school football in hawaii is overrated anyways… we need more mainland recruits with game speed like marrel naequan and JGW. I believe that safety from texas we just got will make an impact after looking at his tape.

The entire state of Hawaii is about 1.3 million…. Just to put it into perspective, Los Angeles county is 9.9 million. San Diego county is 3.1 million, and Orange County is 3.1 million and Riverside county is 2.2 million.
I saw that Hawaii has the highest per capita rate of D1 players to population, but that doesn’t come close vs big recruiting grounds in SoCal (18.3 million population in the biggest SoCal counties).

Hawaii High School is right up there with D1 players per capita in the US. Just watching the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and today’s news of how many Hawaii High School footballers are making an impact, not to mention the players that didn’t even play yet, nor the players that teams didn’t qualify for bowl games. I think somebody got their information wrong.
#65 That’s my point though. I think many of the prospects coming from Hawaii wouldn’t even get looked at by a D1 school if they played in the states. With all due respect, many of those “D1” players that got recruited do not have D1 talent. For example, a player that I know who is on the Hawaii who only had about 3 D1 offers in the states said if he played high school football in Hawaii, He would of had offers across the nation. The recruiting process is pretty messed up as states like Nevada Utah and Colorado get overlooked. 350 pound David Fangupo would of been playing strictly on the line in the states and not at a preposterous position like runningback like he did in Hawaii. The reason he had so much success at running back is because the tackling is not that great for the high school level in Hawaii like it used to be. That’s just my opinion though. There is always a few great players coming from Hawaii but not many good ones and the great ones never seem to go to UH lol. The recruiting process is just really messed up.
Arroyo, if all the Hawaii HS players some how could play high school football on the mainland, true, some may be overrated, just as some 4 or 5 star players are, but also some may gain more exposure. As a former coach, its hard to get players here to be exposed to college coaches unless the players have the money to go to camps and clinics on the mainland and, even then, it would be only for the mainland coaches who also attend the same camps or clinics or, at best, another coach who wasn’t there asks a coach about a certain player. Some coaches do give information, if they are a friend or that player may not fit into their program. Not all college programs have the money to send a recruiter to Hawaii just for 1 or a few prospects. Mainland recruiters sometimes hundreds of miles to see a recruit or talk to a recruit or their coaches. With the high cost of airfare and hotels here, there aren’t too many coaches that can come, unless as a side trip for a vacation with their family. Now days, with the reputations of Hawaii players, some mainland coaches do take the time to look into players here. PIAA is a huge help with local players in all sports to obtain scholarships and also guiding the players to so certain things to get noticed.

Arroyo, is your opinion based on anything other than “mainland mo bettah” thinking? If that were the case, kalaheo and leilehua would be competing for state championships every year with the amount of mainland transfers they get.
Arryo, unfortunately your opinion is more platitude than fact. Fact is that on a national basis, per capita, Hawaii, has for the last 25-30 years, been in the top ten states for both D1 athletes and players who make it to the NFL. For instance, As of 2012, Hawaii (12)
