Place in history
It has been said history remembers Hawaii governors for what they build and UH athletic directors for whom they hire.
John Burns is known for Aloha Stadium, George Ariyoshi for the UH athletic complex, John Waihee for the Stan Sheriff Center, Ben Cayetano for the convention center, Linda Lingle for the Ching complex turf.
Ray Nagel hired Dick Tomey and Larry Little. Sheriff hired Bob Wagner, Frank Arnold, Riley Wallace, Vince Goo and Mike Wilton. Hugh Yoshida hired Fred vonAppen, June Jones, Mike Trapasso and Bob Coolen. Herman Frazier hired Bob Nash and Jim Bolla. Jim Donovan hired Gib Arnold, Charlie Wade, Michele Nagamine and Dana Takahara-Dias.
Wassup Doc reported that Donovan will pick the next football coach. For Donovan, who was instrumental in hiring Jones in 1998, this could be the selection that shapes his legacy.

d’oh! 2nd
I believe Donavan will make the right choice for UH. As a former player and UH alumni, he knows that all of Hawaii is depending on his decision.
JD is one of the best things to happen to UH Sports in a long time. Good man.
Or end his career.
How truefor him. And there are no guarantees of success.
Jim Donovan is a good man and very level headed. I’m confident that he will make the right pick based on who’s best qualified and can take the program to the next level (win the conference on a regular basis, beat your non conference opponents at home and on the road, graduate his players, recruit student athletes who are good citiziens, etc).
UH Football is at a crossroads now. They can ill afford to hire another von Appen.
I’m trying to remember if the finalists for the last coaches’ opening were announced. I do recall there was the spy-vs-spy thing where a candidate was picked up at one hotel, then driven to another for the interview.
I’m confident that he RIGHT selection will be made.
Morning… Let’s hope for an objective decision based on qualifications, experience, connections, and more. Not one too clouded by friendship and close proximity.
…the RIGHT selection …
Go, JD, go!!!
Howzit, everyone!
Hope you all have a terrific Aloha Friday!
At the time, vonAppen appeared to be a hopeful choice. He had a good interview. He promised to bring the West Coast offense, which was considered to be trendy at the time. Guy Benjamin and Ken Margerum were considered to be solid hires. And some important people, such as Mike Holmgren, endorsed vonAppen.
The flap with the governor, and the constant changes — three OCs in three years, three offenses in three years — led to his undoing.
Any news on any new candidates that have applied?
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
GO NA WAHINE!
Jim Donovan is a good person – must be Traci’s influence!
When JJ was hired, he predicted UH would be among the leaders in offense nationally.
And we all smirked.
But he did it. And now people think that not finishing in the top 10 is a disappointment.
When considering the “best” fit for Hawaii, here is what swayed
the selection committee once upon a time:
Von Appen began his coaching career in 1964 at his at his alma mater, Linfield. He earned a master’s degree in secondary education at Linfield in 1965. After leaving Linfield, von Appen served in the United States Army before resuming his coaching career at the University of Arkansas in 1969. He moved on to UCLA in 1970, Virginia Tech in 1971, and then the University of Oregon from 1972 to 1976. Von Appen made the first of four stints at Stanford University from 1977 to 1978.
von Appen spent the 1979 season as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive line coach. He resigned during the 1980 preseason in protest of head coach Bart Starr’s lenient punishment of defensive end Ezra Johnson, who was caught eating a hot dog on the sidelines during an exhibition game.[1] von Appen returned to Arkansas in 1981, where he was the defensive line coach under Lou Holtz. He returned to Stanford in 1982 for a season. Former Stanford head coach Bill Walsh brought Von Appen to the San Francisco 49ers from 1983 to 1988, where his duties included special teams.
In 1989, von Appen returned again to Stanford as the defensive coordinator under head coach Dennis Green. From 1990 to 1991, von Appen was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. When Bill Walsh became Stanford’s head coach for the second time in 1992, he brought von Appen back as defensive coordinator.
Von Appen was the defensive line coach at the University of Colorado at Boulder before becoming the head coach at the University of Hawaii.
very, very impressive…
Just remember, this isn’t American Idol. You don’t get to text in your vote.
I remember vonAppen used to order his players to pick up their rubbish. He also had a don’t-step-on-the-grass mandate. In Vegas, the easiest way to go from the locker room to the buses was a grass patch. He hid on the side, and whenever a player stepped on the grass, he’d yell. (He even yelled at Ferd, who yelled back: “I don’t play for you.”)
It did seem extreme, but vonAppen was preaching discipline. And the campus was tidier back then.
.. I have a question if anybody knows the answer:
Whats the budget $$$ for our new Head Coach?? I’m sure its not gonna be $1.1 mil is it?
Maybe if Ivan Jasper keeps Rolo, he would be the best hope to compete in the new conference…
Anyone listening to BC right now. He’s saying our talent level is on par with San Jose St. And that the talent on the team that’s returning is the worst since 1998. That’s not the case at all…
Fred von Appen, in spite of his background, just looked like one of those Malahini who couldn’t wait to jump on a plane back to the mainland. Same for a number of his assistants. Remember the one OC who got into a fight with a hotel bellhop. Guy Benjamin, however, was one bright spot on that staff. I believe he recruited guys like Dan Robinson and Jeff Ulbrich. Standing up the governor for a fund raising function was a no no. If I recall correctly, the program deteriorated, with major dissension among the players culminating with a brawl between mainland and local players (what few there were on the team at that time). Wild times, indeed.
All of the “man love” for Rich Miano from the media is getting kinda weird.
By no means is the UH football program at the same level of the 98 team. That’s a very illogical statement by BC. If so, would you want ANY holdovers from the previous coaching regime to be rehired?
Wish we had a true Hawaiian or Samoan candidate…
do we???
LETS GO BOWS!!! LETS GO BOWS!!!
Remember the player from the mainland who, after deciding to transfer out, drove his truck and tore up the grass practice field during von Appen’s watch.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
JD IS a good guy. I don’t envy him, having to pick the next Coach.
Another painful memory: Defensive coordinator, turned offensive coordinator Don Lindsey putting in option run plays for drop back passer Dan Robinson. Ouch, double ouch!!
VonAppen should have kicked Ferd’s rear back then (see #”20). Haha
Old School Dave:
OK, those were disturbing memories . . .
#23:
so, what makes BC an expert of UH football and in evaluating players currently on the team?
I, for one, am NOT impressed with him at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Miano has said that he knows what the fans want. So to me he is just telling us what we want to hear. Can he deliver? I don’t know. If he is picked and fails the fingers will be pointing at Donovan. I like Donovan but we have all seen how it goes. It is not a matter of whether you like the guy or not. It is all business.
Von Appen just couldn’t make the transition from pro football to college…. Glanville also had a difficult time.
DITTO on the support for Jim D to make the right selection for the next Warrior HC!
Sorry Stephen. I’ll stop….. Think positive!!
VonAppen yelled at me only a few times. But he yelled near me almost every day.
He was a fascinating guy to cover.
He used to give me two-page lists of story ideas.
We also had this chalkboard feature that we ran every Monday. I’d go to his office on Sundays, and he’d draw up plays for me. I’ve still got them in a box.
Did Jerry Glanville ever learn the names of any of our players the two seasons he was here? “Good job 45”
von App came the closest to beating Notre Dame. He was one play away.
Old School Dave,
Negativity during the selection process is good. Gotta go in with doubt, turn over every stone… select the best person for the job. Somebody that knows all sides of the game, Offense.. Defense.. Special Teams… recruiting… academics… clock management… etc
von App was a good story teller and fun to listen to.
Guy Benjamin seemed to embrace being here when he was on staff. Players like Dan Robinson, spoke highly of him. Is he still living here?
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
(That’s all I have to say today.)
madeinhawaii: #41 Good points. Agree with you 100%. Can’t be a sugar coated interview walking out with diabetes. Need to ask the hard questions.
i think who ever is next hire they should do more contact in practice.
#33 –
Colonel –
BC has to say *something* doesn’t he?
You and I know better. We have some great kids returning. Alls we need is the right Coach!
How can the media say Miano is a good recruiter and the talent level is the lowest it’s been in years, in the same breath?
No, the cupboard is hardly empty.
They’ve got some young offensive linemen who should be better (Shigematsu, Loeffler, Afusia, Lefotu, Winchester-Makainai, Muir).
Iosefa, Jackson and Lister are back. Leaf and Gregory are now added to the mix.
Graves, Godfrey, Higgins, Shutter, Spain should compete for the QB job.
They lose Pollard, but the receivers are all back, and Amadi and Anguay will compete for jobs. There’s even a chance Sampson could redshirt to help him gain some weight.
They’ve got enough DBs. Sellers really came on at the end of the season.
I think VanAckeren steps in for Brown. Daley for Paredes?
They’re recruiting DTs, but for now, they can go with a rotation of Hanohano, Correa, Samia and Matagiese.
Summer training camp at Kalaeloa/Barbers Point or Marine Base Kaneohe – someplace really hot. But make sure the practice field is safe and up to snuff. Don’t want players blowing out knees and ankles.
GO Jim Donovan!
I see him as very capable and trustworthy.
He needs the full support of the Upper Campus.
And the rest of us… opinion without a vote folks… 😆
As for the Warriors, the team of 2012 is indeed very talented.
Needs development… yes, and lokahi and aloha.
Have a great Friday, erryone!
It sounds so good when jm#### sez it, I think I will too!
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
GO WAHINE!!!
someone needs to return their new monitor. the text is black – as listed in the stylesheet #000000
If “ANYONE” Jim Donovan picks to be head football coach fails he will get the blame. That’s part of the job. The key word is “ANYONE”.
Obviously, UH suffered some big losses.
The one guy they’ll really miss is Brett Leonard. Never realized it until recently, but he was the leader of the offensive line.
oops!
GO NA WAHINE!
I wonder what kind of questions they ask of the candidates?
ps GO WAHINE!!!!!
Regardless of who you favor as the new HC, It good to read that there’s a lot of passionate fans who want the UH Football program to move forward and be successful. This is our team, our university.
Glanville’s by-the-numbers deal was an act.
When he was seeking players for his UFL team, he was asking about Lafaele, Laeli and Savaiigaea.
He’s a sharp guy.
He’s crazy, but sharp.
Good thing that BC is not recruiting for UH.
#38 ST, I hoped you save those plays. Someday when he becomes a good coach, that may become valuable.
#48 Some of media say Miano is a good recruiter and only (as far as I know) one radio personality has said that the talent level is the lowest it’s been in years.
One INVISIBLE factor in hiring is the perception of the non-season ticket holder.
Usually coaching changes of the highest profile involves an outside hire and the perception of change is a complete do-over.
IF Miano is hired, the PERCEPTION amongst some ticket holders and the “average fan” might decline on spending any more money on UH football considering the displeasure of the last HC and his subbordinates still on staff in some capacity.
BUT if the Miano backers are correct eventually results will show and the money returns as a result of success.
If an outside hire comes in, UH gambles on making a statement to the public saying “hey! We are aiming for a complete make-over!” Some might be intrigued enough to buy season tickets again or for the first time.
Season ticket sales increased when McMackin was hired in 2008 thanks mostly to the Sugar Bowl, but the curiousity factor helped as well.
This time, no pre-season hype and only doubt amongst the usual 15,000-17,000 non season ticket holders that comprise the usual average home attendance of 33-36K. For them, a change MIGHT be an offering of an olive branch from UH.
To to chance it.
when i listen to bc on the radio i put it on mute.
Maybe they should have the camp at Mauna Kea State Park. Got to get ready to play at Wyoming.
MIH:
Not that I don’t doubt your skepticism (how’s that for a word play?), but UH is a real school run by intelligent people.
The members of the search advisory committee make decisions every day that are way more important than recommending candidates for a football job.
When a team struggles, it’s easy to believe that there’s no thought process. Just isn’t so.
OK, I’ll cut the coach in black some slack. In a place like Hawaii people get a little upset when names (or people and places) are mispronounced.
There are professors up at UH Manoa who mangle and or make no attempt to try to correctly pronounce the names of students there (local and international).
How much, if any, of the “gate receipts” does UH receive for the WVB regionals?
If none, that’s sad because UH had to “bid” for the right and guarantee big $$$ to the NCAA.
At least, UH gets the parking and concession $$$.
#48
We don’t have Texas materiel (even though we have a better two year record than they do) but the cupboard is not as bare as BC makes it to be. Fewer mistakes and we could have had nine wins this year. If we make those same mistakes next year though we won’t be going bowling. Improve a little could mean seven wins and the Hawaii Bowl.
P.S. Of course Texas is in a tougher conference, but they have one of the best recruiting classes in the country every year, has a bigger football budget than a small country and have rich alums who can make life easier for the players. J/K Garret
I think Miano deserves serious consideration for the HC job. Though looking back, secondary play hasn’t been consistently stellar over the past few years (i.e., opponents consistently targeting a particular CB yet no apparent adjustment/change, consistent completions to TEs, QBs throwing balls up for grabs when getting sacked yet they get completions, opponents getting completions on 3rd and long, etc.) Maybe nothing a Secondary Coach can do(?) but sure would be interesting to get an explanation form the horse’s mouth, so to speak, being that he is a HC candidate.
ST #49:
Yep, agreed that UH has a stable of competent substitutes ready to hit off-season training to excel during Spring and Fall practices.
BC should do some research before running at the mouth.
Donovan already got blamed for hiring Greg McMackin when it’s as obvious as night and day that Donovan wasn’t even the athletic director when McMackin was hired…
A lot of stupid people run their mouth.
One question I wish the media would have asked Miano. Who on the staff do you think would make a good head coach?
I don’t think the media favor one candidate over another.
Miano is the interim head coach, so he is one of the few who can provide program updates.
Because UH isn’t allowed to look at the candidates’ applications until the end of business day on Monday, to find interested coaches, a reporter has to get it from the candidate. There are dozens of people who have applied, but unless they confirm it, we can’t go with it.
If coach in black brings NASCAR I’ll be happy.
I remember seeing Glanville at the Ala Moana shopping center
makai parking level…on a bicycle with its seat jacked up way
to high for his short legs and he was riding it standing up on
the pedals so he sortof swayed back and forth over the frame
like a little boy…and he was followed by a huge big young man
on a bike (probably one of his linemen)…
Mixed emotions that day.
Let’s understand one thing. Rich Miano was not the guy setting up recruiting priorities. He was not the guy handing out scholarships. That is the head coaches job. There were ten coaches on staff with just five of them recruiting. Rich was a guy working as hard as possible under a system he did not control.
June Jones…..WON his first season with VON APPEN guys……..VON APPEN recruited talent, especially on the defensive side….he just needed an offense…… JJ brought that…..
I can ONLY assume that UH fronts X amount of dollars to the NCAA to host the regional and after that amount, UH pockets the profit much like the deal with the WAC baseball tournament a few years back…
I ASSUME, then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA pockets the whole damn thing.
It’s funny because UH has one thing working against them in the most profitable situation for them if they do get to keep any extra ticket sale profit.
Let’s say the NCAA asks each regional to front $100,000.00 to host and any extra that each host makes they can keep after the $100,000.00. Well that’s guaranteed monies for the NCAA and the fact that UH nearly sells out won’t matter to the NCAA thus eliminating any thought of this current year “making a statement” to the NCAA to keep the regionals here in Hawaii.
Jones cut a lot of players from Von Appens team in 1999.
DID anyone HEAR the ANIMALS on the radio report the reason for JJ not being signed to AZ ST? …. disturbing that they’d say that on the radio….
A-House:
Injuries aren’t excuse, but they were an explanation.
Critics say UH didn’t recruit enough depth. Not many mid-major programs have third-string players the equivalent of starters. When players scheduled to redshirt are being activated, then it’s apparent there’s an emergency situation. UH ended up taking Muir, who is redshirting, on three trips because of the injuries on the o-line.
There is talent.
That said, I think UH did well recruiting in 2008, 2010 and 2011. The 2009 class had several players who either de-committed or couldn’t get eligible.
You know we love ya, Kevin, but bold face is the equivalent of exclamation points.
Exclamation points are a faux pas?
#75 ST, as for media not favoring one over the other, Miano got the endorsement from the Leaheys on the L&L show. They are media, unless you are talking about only writers at the SA.
Kevin:
I think UH puts in a bid, and if accepted, that’s the amount the NCAA gets.
Just as UH wouldn’t get a discount if ticket sales were below expectations, the NCAA doesn’t get more if sales exceed.
Miano got endorsement from papa Leahey not Kanoa.
I agree with ST….can’t criticize recruiting depth……I worry more about the play calling and game management as a more glaring issue with Coach Mack…..I have a bald spot from scratching my head all season….
Papajoe:
I think Pops Leahey endorsed Miano; Kanoa withheld comment.
RE: Curran.
This is not the first time he’s expressed this opinion. He was more clear about it when he previously stated that while we do have good players on the roster, we just don’t have enough of them.
Kinda same when Miano says one of his goals is to improve the talent level by getting the whole staff involved with recruiting.
I have no doubt we’ll have decent starters on both sides of the ball. Both BC and Miano were alluding more to our depth than the potential starters. More to the quality of our three deeps. QB and RB we go three deep with minimal drop off. What about the other positions. Said it before, saay it again….injuries like kukai happens.
#88, you are probably right. I definately know Jim L. said but just assumed that did Kanoa too. E kala mai.
You too ST.
Kanoa had to be politically correct….since he reps KHON…
No one abuses the word “excuse” more than sports fans.
Excuses are reasons for a result, reasons are interpreted as “excuses” only when one wants to express specific displeasure and bias as well.
If a player is running funny or not as fast and it’s known he or she is playing hurt someone can say “that’s no excuse”. Ummmm… it’s a damn reason though.
The offensive line thing this season is a good example. The play was inconsistent and a lot of guys got hurt, yet somehow for some it was an “excuse” as to why Moniz had to make all of his reads in 1.75-2.00 seconds where as when Graves or Austin came in all of a sudden the same people started proclaiming the line needed to step up all of a sudden.
What makes college football unique is that every five years, there’s a completely new team.
It takes a few years for each player to develop, sometimes longer. Look at Miah Ostrowski. He’s a 2007 Punahou graduate whose last high school season was in 2006. When all is said and done, he probably will have played regularly only two UH seasons.
Recruiting Needs:
1) Offensive and Defensive Linemen
2) A kicker with a strong leg that puts it 5 yards into the end zone on kickoffs
3) A couple of tight ends.
4) Playmakers
5) Pass Rushers
Someone asked it on earlier blog, “why does the qb have to run to the sideline to get a play?” That bothered me a bit since nowadays they have the plays on the arm of the qb and someone on the line signals the qb. I still the old days of the receivers rotating in the plays. More receivers get playing time = dept. This is only a minor peeve. More inportant things to tend to.
In UH’s system, the line already has a disadvantage because there’s no tight end. So factor injuries and inexperience, and it gets to be quite an adventure for the QB.
Man, if we start going to candidate endorsements, we’re gonna have to take a look at that Equal Time Rule.
~~~
I hope UH can pocket everything above what’s paid to the NCAA.
ST the you too from me is not to imply that you endorsed anyone. Its the sorry to you too. Sorry for the sorry.
I’m amazed at how many college teams are now going with very tall and physical wideouts (recent example was BYU’s Apo). Have to take a double take and ask myself if that’s a tight end or not. Seems to cause all kinds of problems for undersized corners and safeties.
BC loves to hear himself talk. Half the time, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. During the season, he praised Mack and backed him up when callers questioned his play calling and recruits’ talent level. Now that he’s gone, BC says that he knew during the season that the talent level was low and that Mack wouldn’t be back next season. So which is it? Are you talking from your mouth or your ass?
I don’t endorse anybody, but I admit I do enjoy listening to Miano, because he speaks with enthusiasm and passion.
Then again, I like listening to Rolo, Aranda, Lee, Shaw, Smith, Tuioti, etc. …
The one guy I really enjoy talking with is Lumpkin, and not just football matters. We had a discussion once about turf that was really fascinating. He’s an interesting man.
#100, $10 a seat x 10,000 = 100,000. Add in parking and concession = profit, BUT the NCAA may find a way…….hahahaha
#102. DOEsnt hawaii have a tall physical wideout?
I like the fact that Air Force has decided to stay in the Mountain West Conference. That’s a plus for Hawaii, definitely. The best UH-Air Force game that I saw was when LB Joaquin Barnett caused a fumble and DB Robert Lan picked up the fumble and returned it 90 plus yards for the winning touchdown. One unbelievable play and one of the defining plays in UH history. I think they showed the replay on K5 on a UH footrball celebration segment. I’d like to see it again. Sometime ago, but still vivid in my mind.
Had to run up to the offices last night and the volleyball team was just concluding a meeting I guess.
They looked loose.
Playing a big match at home does have its advantages.
#106 we had Bright, but he was mostly injured and couldn’t catch the ball.
#107 Derek, yeah, that was a very good moment. I forget, was it the last play? I know it was toward the end of the game.
It’s always a good rule to be honest or diplomatic. At least be consistent.
If you rip someone after he’s gone, then how is the successor going to know if you’re genuine?
If you didn’t say anything bad before, it’s a good idea not to say anything bad now. As we’ve all learned, the cover-up is worse than than the act.
For the second time this year, the Stan Sheriff Center is SOLD OUT.
If Air Force left, and it’s a government-funded school, then who gets stuck with the exit fee?
In this case, the public should be allowed to text-vote.
Derek – That was one of the best plays in a UH game i have ever seen. IIRC, Lan got the ball in MID-AIR after the Barnett hit and raced in for the winning score . . .
Whoever the new coach is, let’s give him a chance to see how the team plays. I’ll just sit back and see what happens now.
the fans of AZ St text voted JJ outta dere!…..FAN POWER!
Primo #106: Yes, Darius Bright, but he’s been battling turf toe and some other physical problems. I hope he can get well and make an impact in 2012.
DARIUS BRIGHT would make a EXCELLENT tight end…..doncha think?
put 40lbs on Bright and we set
who was the best TIGHT END in hawaii football history……HALL?….cant remember his first name..
Anyone remember that tall, physical receiver from the JC ranks who came here during June Jones first season? Atris ……?? Lots of potential, seemed to be getting more involved in the offense as the season went on. Lost it in the Oahu Bowl against Oregon State when he kicked an opposing player and got ejected. He was later kicked off the team.
As far as radio goes, I know The Animals have endorsed Miano 100%. Not sure if any other media folk have done the same.
I’ve met Ronald Regan, Johnny Carson, and Chop Suey Boy in
person, and they made me feel important in their presence.
I met Rich Miano and he made me feel like crap.
But then don’t all defensive backs do that?
Re: #120 . . . the late Ron Hall of the TB Bucs . . .
Re: #121 . . . Attrice Brooks. IIRC, Jones was planning on showcasing him during the Oahu Bowl game and Brooks threw away his chance . . .
As far as I know the TV media Khon, Kitv, Kgmb has not endorsed anyone and the only true newspaper media guy ST has not endorsed anyone. Everyone else mentioned belong to opinion based media which is quite different from reporting the news media.
Curran says…….”MIANO OR BETTER”……that’s his endorsement…. i guess….
The thing about being a mid-major is that we need to recruit players with the potential to develop into D1/NFL contenders, but it takes them a few years to develop. Anything can happen during that time. Academic drop outs…moped and bicycle accidents… surfing accidents(eg.. saving a coach’s son)… and some simply don’t pan out. As a mid-Major, you have more working against you in recruiting than the BCS schools that generally get the higher caliber player out of high school. To level the playing field, non-AQ schools should have a JC waiver of sorts.. allowing them to get JC transfers without Associate degrees provided they can now pass the NCAA and said college admissions standards.
Dave, it’s Brooks. Attrice Brooks. He was a 3 or 4 star player, but he was undisciplined. You could see the talent, but didn’t channel it the right way. Too bad.
I thought McKinley Reynolds was a good TE. You have to say Ron Hall was one of the best at UH because he was good enough to play in the NFL.
#124..Mush…yes!…RON HALL!!…thanks!…he was good!
Endorsements? Damn….its now a political race?
WHERE do it TEXT my vote?….FAN POWER!!
“Miano or Better”… I suppose I can live with that, provided it’s not the lowest bid, type deal.
ONE GOOD thing to come about this whole situation….MIAH gets to help the BB team now……HOPE they start winning….
So what is the min-max going in? ( I am hoping that there is some flexibility as to the “max” if the right person for the job applies.)
We should be doing what Texas, Cali and Florida do – keep the best in state talent in state. It IS possible. That doesn’t mean that every local boy gets recruited, but lots of local boys would stay home if approached the right way. That has been lacking in the past.
Okay going to throw this name out there. George Waialae. Has had a great record for the Hill Toppers.
Agree Nalani.
John Connelly, Henry Sovio, Dave Barbour (very good blocker), Elton Shintaku (my favorite), Jerry Scanlan (UH TE but would have made it in the NFL as an O-Lineman if not for a neck injury).
Attrice Brooks. Thanks. He had the tools, but (as with so many) didn’t have his head on straight.
Brooks could only play two quarters each game…could only line up on one side of the field.
Wonder if any on the team now are like that?
I think that Utah is a good example/model of a mid-major that made the jump to a BCS conference and level of play based on their aggressive fund raising (Crimson Club), donors, facilities, etc. It’s now just a matter of time for their talent level to reach the level of week in and week out Pac-10 competition. They are doing a lot of recruiting in Texas now.
Oh man… that would be weird. Would be all over the news if it happened.
Advisory Committee asks each HC hopeful, “Have you submitted your lowest possible bid to be contracted as our HC? Please be sure to include your lowest bid for a buyout as well. Thank you.”
Nalani,
No sit and wait for that to happen; dese buggahs not da swiffes fo contact All-Staters! 😉
Zombie-crombie going be remembered for wat?
HO-scale train set? 😈
Remember this? An article Tsai wrote in 2006.
Very Impressive. Coach Miano was on the Kaiser
swim team as a diver?
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Jul/02/sp/FP607020364.html
I guess Brooks had dyslexia of the football field….
#113 – If the USAFA is like USNA, most of the sports programs are funded by non-appropriated funded organization. At Navy, its the Naval Academy Athletics Assoc. They pay the coaches and handle the conferences. I think they have a board that runs it, and one of the Academy Command Group is the chair and they take guidance from the Superintendent of the Academy. That is why Ken Niamatalolo is not the highest paid federal employee, he gets paid by the NAAA not the govt.
MIANO MIANO MIANO HE IS ARE MAN!!!!!
RE: Next coach.
Right now it’s a beauty pageant. Fans for Miano and Chow say their guy is the prettiest and the other guy is plain ugly. They talk like it’s a two horse race. The other entrants have yet to strut their stuff before the audience but it seems many have concluded it’s one or the other.
Good thing the judges interview carries the most weight in crowning the winner.
Family and friends have a big influence on where a kid decides to go. Big name schools are like the bright lights of Vegas to many parents who never had the chance, and could only dream… and those Vegas lights have more than one meaning. I’ve heard family and neighbors discuss possibilities of certain kids’ futures WHEN they make it to the big leagues, be it football, basketball, or baseball… meaning they’re already spending the (Pro league) money before the kid has even entered college. So, while they’d love for the kid to play at home, they want ’em to go to a school that ups their chance of going to the next level. Not easy being a mid-major in the middle of the Pacific, competing with BCS schools.
Thankfully, there are parents out there who place a higher value on the diploma, and if that next level comes, then fine. But if not, then at least school was completed.
#139 – Jerry Scanlan did play in the NFL for the Redskins as an OT. You’re think of Joe Onosai hurting his neck with the Cowboys
Lots of people that have never posted before (or maybe the same person using different names) coming here and pushing for Miano. Don’t like it one bit. Too slick.. too deliberate. Where were these posters before all this?
I think it was mentioned earlier that Brian Cabral (St, Louis, Colorado, ex-Chicago Bear) might be a candidate. I think that he deserves a look.
I think Jerry Scanlan also suffered a career ending neck injury with the Redskins. I believe John Wilbur helped arrange his free agent contract. Scanlan had good size 6.6 270 and could run. I remember him being kinda lanky when he played at Iolani, but had potential and went on to develop into a fine player at UH.
Was a certain UH HC candidate actually sign waving on Dole Street yesterday or was it just a joke? Not. For real?
#153…”Miano” LURKERS coming out of the woodwork?….I hope you’re not thrownin me with them…..”miano or better’…!
Eh, Miano, is that you? Has one of our favorite multiple-personalties bloggers been giving you tips on how to post here?
Jerry hurt his back, then ran into other issues. He was a pre-hog Redskin.
MIANO dont have to politick in here. what the heck do we have?….A SAY??…..FAN POWER!
I hope recruiters from Oregon, Washington, Utah, UCLA, Colorado and Oregon State apply. They seem to recruit Hawaii well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Old School Dave ~ I like the idea of having the UH FB summer camp here at the Kapolei HS stadium. The problem is, a certain Sports Writer would end up pitching a tent on my front lawn. There goes the neighborhood!
Im a newbie
My observation Miano seems very passionate.
Can he recruit?
Chow he still is a great OC,watch what utah
did to BYU.
He would be out of his mind to come home.
Is there anyone on Boise state staff thats interested?
Duane Akina, can he recruit Texas players?
Who ever we get-we will deserve him!!
It would be nice to see Miano get a shot at the HC job. I think most people agree he has a lot of qualities we need. As long as UH has a buyout that won’t kill the budget if it does not work out.
I think most people can agree that Bob Nash did not work out well, but at least he got the shot at it, and he deserved that much. Hopefully Miano is not another Nash. Hopefully he is the next guy to take the program to the next level.
Tsai, if you were on the “search committee” who would you like to see apply?

Maybe if BC talks up Miano, then talks down the talent level of the team, he has the escape route either way the season turns out if Miano is chosen. If good results, I told you Misno was the right choice. If bad results, he didn’t have the talent.
I like the talent of the team, and believe with the right coaching staff they will be great.
Miano and Chow talk here. What about Rolo? Did he apply. He would be a long shot though. Also the guy from Oregon State. Banker? Maybe coach Cav comes along. Cabral? Also a lot of former UH players. I can’t wait till they get their chance to campaign.
List is my observation from posts/discussions held in the past, wishes, and complaints.
Anyone have anything to add? 🙂
“Attract attention of moms”? Hahaha! Wonder if a guy would ever say that. (Unless you meant in a recruiting kind of way.) Good one, UHFan808!
Kekoa, #162: We can’t have that. I hate that when that happens – people making house on your property 🙂
168 did you just list List? 🙂
I think you’ve covered about everything that everyone’s been looking for too.
Or especially when kids cutting class and smoking right next to the house!
Who eve the next coach I hope they take us to the playoffs. Wait a minute……….Playoffs?……PLAYOFFS??……… You talking about PLAYOFFS?…. Playoffs?:))
is jd going to announce 1st-runner-up, runner-up, and winner?
#168 – correction!
This list is my observation…
…Which also includes ideas from other Tsai-kos too.
Sowee!
BTW, Hi Tsai-kos!
#169 – Yes that comment is meant on a good way, to garner attention and support for the team in a general positive sense.
#171 – Guess so? 😯
#172 – Oh no there are lots more ideas so post them so I can add. At least we can have a Tsai-koMethodology for evaluating whatever coach they choose, too, eh? 😉
UH Head Coach requirements:
1. Able to strategically plan, manage and delegate.
2. Have a high football IQ.
3. Able to sell Hawaii to top recruits.
4. Able to retain local blue chip athletes in Hawaii.
5. Able to represent the State of Hawaii.
6. Able to recruit highly recruited athletes (with NFL ties).
7. Knowledge of our current RNS system and its shortfalls.
8. Able to speak articulately.
9. Must have character.
What about recruiting locally? Seems I hear that every time we have been searching for a new HC.
Knows how to win. Can’t do that. bye bye.
Akina, Jasper, Aranda, Babers, and the others sound good. I just hope the committee and JD chooses the right guy to move forward. I and I’m sure most of the Tsaikos will support whoever is chosen.
Must be a great Game Manager. This separates great coaches from the good.
GO RAINBOW WAHINE!
BEAT USC!
#102:
Reno has a 6’8″ WR – ASU has a 6’8″ QB who is projected to strat 2012/
Derek & musashi:
correct amundos – Barnet hit the Af QB, ball popped into the air, Lan caught it and ran 97 or 98 yds for the TD – believe LOS was the 2 yd line – last play of game!
as papa Leahy says, “Hawaii wins, Hawaii wins”!!!!!!
#121 Atris Brooks! that dummy!
Old School Dave
I concur on John Connelly and Elton Shintaku (teammates).

PolyMom
Our best to your Mom coming home today and to the young man who is such a passionate UH fan.
To me, Chow comes off as having a big ego. BYU, USC, Tennessee Titans, UCLA, Utah. The guy’s been around for a long time. Don’t get me wrong. Lots of top coaches have big egos, maybe all coaches do. But, I like somebody who comes off as being very humble and can laugh at himself. That’s why I always liked Dick Tomey because he knew his stuff and could say some funny stuff too. In those days, Tomey was a fan and media darling. He had the way of captivating an audiance, plus the players too. His teams always played hard, and his teams character was on defense and special teams. The attendance were at the highest under his tenure. Chris Peterson, to me, is the ideal coach. The guy is so very low key, so humble, actually practically unnoticed. All he does is prepare his teams to be the best, innovate, and just wins a ton of games. To have the kind of record he does at a place like Boise State speaks volumes about his coaching ability. It’s quite unbelievable. Are you kidding me? Boise State. They only joined Division IA football by joining the WAC conferece in 2000. That’s not long ago.
Hey Don. Didn’t you guys used to have your summer training camp at Pearl Harbor under Dave Holmes? I recall reading an article about then DC Larry Price holding the defense after practice to make them do bear crawls.
Re#55
ST sez: “The one guy they’ll really miss is Brett Leonard. Never realized it until recently, but he was the leader of the offensive line.”
And I sez: “That’s because you don’t listen to me. I said early on that Brett was our best O-line guy.”
Ha, I know I’m being an arrogant SOB, but that’s what I saw and I felt my assessment was affirmed to some extent by Brett’s All-WAC selection.
Someone mentioned if other coaches will be given the opportunity to “campaign” on the radio etc.
Well I think those that are currently unemployed could if they wanted to.
Those that are still employed by Utah or Baylor or Oregon State need at least pretend to focus on their job at hand.
Lots of good candidates on the list. I ask again that JD and the Selection Mafia keep an open mind and look at ALL the candidates. Heck, maybe even make some calls if you haven’t already.
I’m not necessarily advocating on behalf of Miano, but why is there so much objection to his post-Mack media appearances? Sungod did the exact same thing on Leahey & Leahey after JJ left. He was clearly trying to position himself as the next HC from what I recall. A few days after that, he was gone to Dallas because Mack had no room in the inn.
“pure” RNS offense is dead!
“modified” RNS offense is alive and thriving at the HS, college, and NFL level! look at all the teams that use some form of this!
Okay, I’m too lazy to do this, but how many of the coaches who have expressed interest are still in the middle of their seasons? Although Bowl preparation didn’t stop JJ from negotiating a new job, there are coaches who may not even be thinking of anything except their bowl game.
papa,
Jim Mora at UH would be funny. Hawaii Bowl?!
to Jim D:
whomever you select, I will support (even if I don’t like/care for that person).
#194:
believe it came out that SMU contacted JJ’s attorney/agent in October 2007 about the SMU HC position.
interestingly, UH was caught “off-guard” when JJ took the SMU job – didn’t Steinbrener (sp) have an obligation to tell UH?
Utah, Baylor, Navy still need to play one more game.
Oregon State, not so much.
Me too (even if I don’t like/care for that person).
Gary Crowton interested in the CSU job. Former QB at CSU. Had success as a HC at LA Tech, and as OC at LSU and Oregon. Stumbled as BYU HC, though.
http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_19502517?source=pop
I want to see how Boise/Peterson handles it when they start losing. Just a matter of time.
No worry Crowton we got new turf.
If the Run and Shoot is still around, I would love for Crowton to get the CSU job!
LB’s covering Slots all day long, baby! 😉
We should hire Reggie Torres for $100,000 with the understanding he signs 90% of his current seniors to UH. Torres then steps down for personal reasons and Miano steps in for $400,000. That would be the money we owed Mack. This might actually be legal.
Mack gave back $500k; das good.
What about the next year?
What?
MACK GAVE BACK $500K; DAS GOOD!
WHAT ABOUT NEXT YEAR?
😆
I was puzzled when I heard that BC had said the team’s talent level was where it was in 1998. But then heard it again this AM when he repeated that in talking with Kekaula. In talking those who called in, what I think he is trying to say – but not very well, is that the team’s talent is down from the standpoint of proven depth and experience (#91). There were 26 seniors and may key ones on defense (which is what he talked about, e.g. Meatoga, Tuipulotu, Paredes, Brown, Torres, …), and on offense (Pollard, OL.) We have 85 scholarships to give – if 20 of the seniors are scholarship players, then that leaves 65. This year’s roster has approx. 35 freshmen or redshirt freshmen, and around 14 sophomores. Many did not get a lot of PT. As ST points out, the 2009 class was a strong class (#83). Those will be our jrs. and seniors. The new coach’s success will depend on these young players reaching their potential. Adding talent in this next class will be critical in maintaining a positive momentum.
We have a great group of players.
I love the long coach qualities list but the real list that UH wants is pretty short.
JUST WIN. It’s all about the $$$.
GO WARRIORS!
Don’t forget Buzzy Preston. He should be given strong consideration.
The next year Miano would take a leave (soul searching) and we would appoint Kale Ane as interim for $30,000/month. Miano could return at his salary and Ane have a change of heart and return to the Puns.
In corporate speak, they call it “taking care of the internal customer”.
When it required compromising personal integrity (like lie about sales), I quit.
Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono
Gotta be pono to be of longterm good.
GO WAHINE!!!

Come on Liz. Stop being habut already.

http://www.mwcconnection.com/2011/12/8/2621105/big-east-may-not-be-finished-with-westward-expansion-or-the-mwc#storyjump
Apparently the Hawaii to Big East possibility rumor is still afloat. Got to make sure we have a coach that is attractive enough should this possibility become a reality.
Da Keed:
He’s now Buzz.
Good guy. Wife is from Hawaii. His first two kids were born here.
Dropped off my Football Fever picks at the S-A today.
Asked a guy where Stephen’s desk is? He laughed and walked away…..
😯
…but he did appear to have walked out of the dental office. Mighta still been gassed….
Wrong, Donovan has no real say in this matter, the Committee chosen few is doing the choosing and making the final decision, Donovan , unfortunately is just the facilitator, NO POWER in this case, to make the choice, sad but true, a lot of POLITICS as usual!!!!!!
I don’t think Miano is campaigning.
He’s just in demand.
The Leaheys called him for their show; not the other way around.
It’s interesting that McMackin was criticized for not speaking well. Now Miano is being criticized for … speaking too well?
There are two things that are going to matter: 1) the application letter. 2) the interviews.
Need to do well in the first to land the second.
Geez…no practice report. 🙁
Hey, since we’re all on the side, I just say, let the applications come in and good luck to all.
What any of us think, me included, isn’t going to matter.
I am surprised that Abercrombie did not appoint his own people to fulfill his vision of what he thinks it should be. Or did he????
…not even for Pop Warner teams.
RedZone,
They all decided they had “family issues” 😆
d1shima:
Hey, I had a senior moment the other day. I couldn’t find my own desk. (I went to the wrong row.)
Agree with ST about Buzzy Preston. Hard worker, very good motivator, knowledgeable, and a good guyl He’s coached at a number of D-I schools (WAZZU, Stanford, Notre Dame, now at Georgia Tech). Originally from So Cal, he transferred to UH from Harbor JC (?) and lettered in 78 & 79.
Papa Leahey was criticized for getting the jersey numbers wrong. And the new guys????? Bwaaaaaa Same excuse. No can see the numbers.
Elton Shintaku?
OK, now we’re going deep.
Years and years ago, when I was a mere lad, I bought my sister Dr. John tickets.
And she smiled and said: I wanted ELTON John tickets.
Oops, li dat.
Buzzy—->Buzz
Timmy—->Tim?
Fred——>Ferd
The problem with Miano is that he talks like a politician which makes it appears as if he is campaigning. but then he could be.
We need to start paying 4 star players under the table to come here and secure a foundation of winning. Any thoughts? All big time schools do it look at the return on investment…BCS money!
Funniest comment regarding Weber State’s hiring of John L Smith: “Big Sky teams had better purchase more athletic cups.”
RZ,
Eh, but at least it’s over fast!
Introducing Big Sky Falsetto Squad.
I hope the chance, I mean the committee makes the right choice.
If we could go to the Big East, I would be happy. Then heck gotta ask Coach Strong for the good tickets as the Big East fans SHOW UP! Big time.
Thanks to the person who gave a shout out to Dave Barbour. His wife has been my best friend since summer of 8th grade.
@Don Weir mahalo for everything you have done for Hilo’s biggest Warrior fan. Sent box threw UPS. Won’t make it for your lunch, but please distribute to your lunch bunch at a later time. Wish everyone a happy holiday from our ohana.
Mom should be home on the 18th Lord willing. Thanks for all the kind thoughts and prayers for her!
Wonder why the Cincinnati Bengals didn’t try to go after
Colt Brennan. Hmmmmmmm…..
On a very quick break: Here is what I was told yesterday by Keith Amemiya which I passed along to Stephen.
The Board of Regents will not formally vote on the contract; however, the Regents, along with the President and the Chancellor, will be kept in the loop as the hiring process is carried out. However, the decision is on Jim Donovan’s plate.
The Advisory Committee will rank order the candidates and will provide a list to Jim Donovan based upon the number of applicants requested by him. He may ask to see them all or only the top five or ten or twenty. That is his choice, not the Advisory Committee’s unilaterial decision.
I confirmed that the McMackin hiring process was very different than the one being used today. Not only was Virginia Hinshaw on the job only about five months at the time but also David McClain was going into his final year as UH System President in 2008-2009. Furthermore the Director of Athletics had just been fired. That meant there was a collective decision made at the time rather than just one person being responsible.
For those of you who have strong feelings about any particular candidate or the qualifications that you feel the head coach must have, I urge that you contact Jim Donovan jdonovan at hawaii dot edu or Rockne Freitas rfreitas at hawaii dot edu. Be polite, use your real name and provide complete contact information.
QUESTION: Is Ivin Jasper related to Jory and Jett?
I have one final meeting with a legislator at 2:30 pm and will be heading on up to UH shortly around 3:30 pm so I get a parking space in the garage.
GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO WAHINE
Auwe to the Kansas fans making jokes about Turner Gill being too skinny to be the head coach. Don’t know what they’re talking about.
@Stephen Tsai. Let everyone apply. And pray like heck we can BRING IT ON!
Mahalo WassupDoc!
GO Wahine!
Depth at football or any other sport:
is it not the coaching staff’s responsibility to develop depth? don’t they have a written plan to follow?
lack of depth has always been a problem at UH – why? because the staff concentrates only on the 1st and 2nd teams – look at spring and fall practices – only the top 2 at each position gets the max reps – others stand around and “observe” and expected to assimulate.
let the 1st team offense practice against the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string – coaches may be surprised at what they may find in the lower tier.
vice versa for the defense.
thank you Shannon! I for one aappreciate all the information you bring to this blog!
Critical that we understand what happening.
I hope no one bothers Jim Donovan. He has a huge decision to make. I hope he takes his time and ends up comfortable with his decision.
Rolo is JJ and then some. Gotta tell the Chance.
A-house,
I think that’s what the definition of “Scout team” is
Saw Deitre Collins at Like Like during lunch. She is pumped for the game tonight.
Video on Utah’s new football facility.

Just think, UH used to own these guys back in the 80s and 90s. Still have images of UH’s Peter Pale pulling and demolishing Luther Ellis, the Utes All American D-lineman back in the early 90s.
Need to start carbo loading. Sunday is almost here. Getting nervous.
Someone asked if the players are serious about next year and already training…
just saw another pic of Billy Ray climbing up Koko Head. The first was from Tuesday.
d1- I am not habut… just not caught up in the merry-go-round and looking rather at a long-run picture.
No matter what happens in the short term, if it is to be fair to all concerned and build better friendships and be beneficial to all concerned, the decisions need to be based on truth. (just restating the Rotary 4-way test).
The corporation I worked for asked me to sell product that the engineering dept. was not going to provision. When I challenged my sales mgr., he said they had to satisfy the internal customer…(stockholders). It was a short-range solution and a few years after I left, the co. went belly-up.
If UH wants to stay viable, I feel that it needs to do right by the kids – not only in the athletic dept.
If the kids stay away from the football games… that says something about a disconnect. Perhaps football is not going to be the cash cow that it once was.
Just sayin…
Not habut. Concerned.
GO WAHINE!!!
In Soviet Russia, Koko Head climbs you!
uh should make a deal with att and verizon and have a nationwide “vote for the hc” via text message. proceeds from the texting will go to lower campus.
of course it will be fixed just like american idol and x-factor.
don’t believe JD will make the final decision; there is a higher power that acutally makes the decision but annoucement by the Athletics Director with the Chancellor. That has been policy, so let’s not be naive.
Pride, you going marathoning? look for me at water station #2.
God picks the hc? 😆
CP,
Higher…ESPN
Gotta do game prep for WVB tonight.
Nap time!
Students have never stayed away from wahine volleyball games, they’ve returned since Charlie Wade’s hire to the games, baseball has a lot of students around the upper levels and just above the UH dugout on the 1st base side, a fair amount of students frequent the softball stadium, and Gib Arnold’s arrival also returned the students to the basketball games.
There is a commonality amongst all those sports I mentioned in relation to student attendance.
The student attendance was fine and reasonably high by UH historical standards for all home games this season up until the USU game.
In 2008 I attended a luncheon at the Kahala Hilton and Greg McMackins was the speaker. It was his first year as Head Coach. UH was to open the 2008 campaign against the mighty Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, and Tim Tebow. I asked McMackin if he has met with Urban Meyer and he told the audience that he knows Meyer, “and I don’t like him”. The audience got a good laugh, but after that I was a little taken aback. Maybe Mack was feeling good since he was a new Head Coach and he had full of confidence and he was still undefeated. Well, you know what happened on August 30 ,2008. Florida 56, Hawaii 10.
And, maybe Mack and a few other people don’t like Meyer too, but he’s laughing all the way to the bank. I have not doubt that Urban Meyer will be a big winner at Ohio State. That’s what he always do, win a lot of games. Why? Mainly because he’s a real good salesman and a terrific recruiter. Some guys are so smooth that they can get their players to run over coals!!!!!! McMackin was never quick with the words and never used a lot of high vocabulary words. When he spoke he spoke on the slower side. Towards the end, he was driving me nuts, just like UH’s playing calling and how they ran the clock all lthe back down to 2 seconds and snapped the ball. We and my friends watching would say “hurry up”, especially when we are behind and needed to conserve as much time as possible instead of wasting time. It was so frustrating. I don’t know about other fans, but I think most can agree that
we feel the same things.
And did you notice, on the Coach Mack show on Sunday nights that Mack spoke very little. It was mostly recapping the game by Chris Tanaka and Mike Cherry with some interviews with some players etc. I wonder if it was design. And did you notice, about half way in the season how McMackins face and tone changed a lot. He didn’t have fun anymore, he was feeling a lot of pressure. I think he felt real bad when we lost of Vegas by 20 points and he disappointed over 7,000 fans who went to support the team, and probably lost money on the game too.

And always concerned about head injuries… Even the other Colt’s.
In Soviet Russia, head coach picks God.
In Dallas apparently God weighs in on where one man should coach at after he’s been rejected elsewhere… very convenient.
I wonder if the higher power is a FREE-MASON?
Bring back the balloon brigade!
I take that back… there are no free masons.
Carry on. You heard nothing.
Called the kid to check and see how his test today went for class. He told me that Coach Miano was meeting each player one on one. Asked him if Coach Miano knew his name? He said yes…that makes me happy as Coach Mack used to call him boy. When I heard that he was calling him boy…I did not like that! Coaches should know all the kids names. Good for Miano. Thanks.

“Why the fact is, we took our time, and we searched every where. I have had long experience in these affairs. I took the entire building, room by room; devoting the nights of a whole week to each. Derek, what’s your point? i have a difficult time comprehending.
Game on, ESPN. It’s Northern Iowa at Montana. It’s 23 degrees there. Football weather in the “frozen tundra.” It’s great to have a National Championship settled on the field with a playoff like the FCS teams do. No debate, no arguments. May the best team win. That’s the way it should be. Death to the BCS!

Former Mililani QB Trent McKinney is on the Montana roster along with a couple other guys from Hawaii. He’s probably redshirting his freshman year as I don’t see him. He’s #11.

re: #55
I thought Mr. Leonard was pretty consistent at whichever position he was at this year. I was just telling a co worker that I thought when Mr Leonard was at guard, it seemded like the running game was a little better. But when he moved to tackle, it seemed alot of the pressure was coming from the other side. Not too sure if my observation was correct but I thougt he did a really good job this year!!
Go Wahine!!!!!
Ralph,
Oooo Wildcats…
Funny listening to the Animals talk about the head coach selection process. They have no idea as to who’s selecting the head coach. People don’t listen. They need to read between the lines.

Don: Yasuo Yorita, McKinley HS. Didn’t play a couple of years at Montana with Elroy Chong before they both transferred home to UH? Funny story I heard about Yasuo Yorita (don’t know if it’s true, but it’s funny). I believe that he’s a school teacher now and has been for many years. One day he happened to mention to his students that he played football for UH. His students laughed and didn’t believe him. He had to bring in old programs and newspaper clippings to prove he was telling the truth.

still 5 by 5 in Waipio 🙂
The solution is easy really. You just find out what Boise State did, and get someone to do that. You do it exactly and you do it thoroughly. Even painting the grass the team’s colors. At least we got that handled.
Second best solution is hire someone who can recruit big men and keep them happy. Mike Cavanaugh is the man then.
Third best is to eliminate anyone who got caught with their pants down. By that I mean going 10 games into the season with no credible backup QB trained. The R and S is a QB run system. That brings us back to point one. Boise State would have never put themselves in that position.

Which coach does Cav have a relationship with due to some organ donation or something?
i found an interesting article on Banker.

Sorry that the Wahine didn’t win tonight.
RedZone,
Interesting article. While it had some great things about Banker, I could also see that Riley himself must be a pretty good coach.
Offensive Coordinator Danny Langsdorf donated a kidney to Laurie Cav
Colorado State doesn’t seem to be dismissing the idea of hiring guys from big name schools. Oregon’s Helfrich, Oklahoma State’s OC Todd Monken, and Texas’ DC Manny Diaz may be on the list.
Among their possible targets is Robert Anae.
Their AD hopes to start with a list of….get this…50-70 candidates and break that down eventually to 5 finalist.

#643,
That’s it. Thanks.
Robert Anae will be retained by Rodrigues at Arizona.

Does anyone remember Colt Brennan endorsing Norm Chow for the head coaching job back in 2008?
I just watched this piece by Hawaii News Now. Reardon was interviewed and said that the amount of money spent on the next HC will be determined by the “quality of the finalist”….
Seems like the salary issue is very open ended. Unless Reardon misunderstood what JD told him.

Banker would be an interesting choice. A good defensive coach, high on technique (which we need).
Great season, Wahine! Looking forward to next year.
Some of the men’s VB team were sitting behind me in the stands. Some new faces. I have my MVB season tickets on order.
Murphy’s Bar and Grill was just on Diners, Drive Inn’s and Dives. Pretty neat.
Great season Na Wahine, can’t wait for next season.
Aloha and best wishes to the three seniors.
Wahine. No shame.
mike leach will run his version of the spread offense, not so much the pistol per se. leach will probably be his own oc.
great post, i certainly love your post, keep on it!!! Rhian
i wonder if anae is playing possum or subscribes to the bird in the hand is worth two in bush theory. perhaps he could still be a candidate, having a job is priority and now applying for other jobs becomes more carefree???
Banker might bring along this assistant if he gets the UH job.

i’m hoping that if he is the guy then he’ll bring cavanaugh.
i hear they both love the plate lunch experience.
banker is the hawaii recruiter for oregon state. he’s also been very active in the locally held clinics. and his first coaching stint was with tomey here in hawaii.
on paper he is a strong candidate.
who ever gets it…and if its not rolo, then i do hope that they strongly consider an unleashed rolo.
658…better late than never. funny i just had a conversation about him with a friend today.
i was told that he has at least a dozen offers now that nebraska tendered a week or two ago.
recruiting’s such a funny game.
well you know that the interim coach will be offering at least a dozen more local kids by the time the selection process is done.
you do realize that right?
you know tsai’s supposed to be on vacation.
Hope that the Interim Head Coach would offer the Punahou kicker.
Need someone to kick off, to, and into the end zone.
Howzit Al!…Did I miss sumting? Been singin’ bout dat Big Ole Jet Airliner with Steve Miller and da boyz. Would’ve traded those tickets for the VB game from what I read on the blog. Musta been a real barn burner!
don’t forget before you all get so in love with the high school kicker.
high school kicks off from the 40 yd line
college is from the 30 yd line.
yup. barn burner.
we got some of the best wvb players in the nation who are under six feet. i.e. danielson, croson, satele, uiato, and the like.
we just happen to lose a team with the best 6′ 4″ wvb players in the nation.
but wait till next year.
ai-eee-soos ~ Need to find someone that can shadow that Pun kicker and put the squeeze on him. Maybe find out what his personal goals are, and find a creative way to make that ‘goal’ happen for him. (Without triggering any NCAA investigations…)
Al ~ So next year we can cut them down to size?
I hear that the boy can boot it outta the stadium!
Whoop…gotta log off. Early start in the morn. bbl…nyetol!
nah, in the hsaa state champ game it was 8 yds deep at most in the end zone which means he’d be booting it to the five or so each.
surely he could improve his leg strength. any i think he is mainland bound.
Sooooo proud of our Na Wahine!
Now if only we could somehow bottle up that fighting Wahine spirit up and give to our men’s program!! We’d be national champions by now!!
Some truly nice and utilitarian information on this site, as well I conceive the layout contains good features.
Excuse me? Proper presentation of a news item requires EQUAL representation of the different sides of the argument and when you set up the argument yourself and then only present information from one side, THAT’s shoddy journalism.
The trick’ referred to is an all too increasingly familiar tactic employed by cable so-called news and, in my opinion (remember editorial) the worst offender but by no means the only is FNC. If you care to google the subject, you will find oodles and oodles of examples that help support my point.
Aloha! My colleague has recommended me to read your blog. And I’d like to say that I really value what you’re posting here.
Hey there! Would you mind if I share your post with my squidoo group? There’s a lot of readers that I think would really devour your content because this subject is exactly what they are interested in. Please let me know if you have any reservations. Thanks
Great site, I’m glad I stumbled across it today.

Gmorning Liz and braddah DPK!!
Good morning, all!
Well, the moon disappeared . . . behind the clouds. Again.
The past week we have had crystal clear nights. But, not last night. Tsigh.
Again, thank you, Wahine!
Leave no doubt next year.
OldSchoolDave…..Yorita sure did play…..not a big guy all muscle and he had speed….quiet but real good guy and teamate. Regarding conditioning today’s game and player so different to back then…..100 up downs to close out the morning sessions in the early heat, come back in the aft with shorts and helmets…..and for your nitetime entertainment contact drills for 90 minutes yep that was interesting…..you just survived, and counted off the days. The real treat was the Saturday you got off….if you were local you went home to friends and family…if not you got free bus ride to go watch a high school game!!!! Otherwise you stayed in the barracks looked at the ceiling and waited till MonDay….I would not trade that experience or any of them for anything—-Go Warriors!!!!
Great Morning All!
*YAWN*
Hard time settling in and sleeping after that WVB match….
Wasn’t the school on the hook for a settlement the last time this happened? 🙄
Mornin d1, wafan and maddog, looking like a beautiful day today!!!
You have a very good site, well constructed and very interesting i have bookmarked you hopefully you keep posting new stuff.

Mad Dog & Don: Thanks for the stories. Different breed of players and coaches back then. No time limits for practice during that time.
I now understand why Nick Rolovich hasn’t applied for the HC job. HIs JUCO coach George Rush at CCSF is a candidate for the UH job according to this morning’s SA.
#690 – Don – me thinks we need to get a little of the old school back.
I really like George Rush. I think he would retain Rolo and he has a wide open passing attack. And he is a proven winner.
My take has always been that if McMackin did not end up working out, that UH needs to clean house and not hire from within for its next coach. Too much damage has been done beyond a superficial level where the administration needs to hire someone who is at least compelling enough to stem the level of disinterest by the general public.
While Miano has an interesting story (walk-on to starter to NFL veteran), is an articulate speaker, and has an unbridled love and passion for Hawaii, he is unfortunately guilty by association with the previous regime. He was also a key part of the faction who sold the idea of continuity with a local staff comprised of himself, the Lee’s, and Lumpkin after Jones left. Because of the politics of the deal that Clapp brokered to secure a higher profile name (in this case, McMackin, since he had far better coaching credentials than Miano and the Lee brothers), that basically put McMackin at a disadvantage when it came to bringing in his own handpicked staff. McMackin was setup for failure from the get go as far as being a head coach is concerned (money wise is a different story because he collected a nice sum of money) and he knew what he was getting into. This is why your late friend, LV, did not like this hire because he saw the coach as an opportunist (aka carpetbagger).
As much as Lou Holtz’s babbling is annoying, he is correct that successful head coaches surround themselves with quality assistants, as he has said on many occasions that it was his assistant coaches who made him look good. For a first time D1 coach like McMackin, it was much more imperative that he put together an experienced staff. But look at what he ended up assembling. There was nothing he could do about Miano, Cal and Ron Lee, and George Lumpkin because that was part of the brokered deal. And while Aranda, Rolo, and Smith have potential, they were green at this level. There is no need to rehash the way the 2008 season went except for a few key points that some of us early on mentioned and raked the coaching staff over; the mess (lack of discipline and leadership by the coaching staff) that some saw on the sidelines early on in 2008 was why we expressed our displeasure with this regime.
Can we all admit that the continuity experiment (that many of us clamored for after Jones bolted) did not work. We fans (most all of us) were complicit in demanding that because it was the natural response coming out of the Sugar Bowl. It did not help there were transitional changes occurring within the administration at the time (McClain was outgoing as president, Hinshaw had only been Manoa chancellor for a short period, Clapp was serving as interim-AD). The above mentioned deal handicapped McMackin and it showed to anyone with a clue. I am not going to touch on issues regarding Mack himself (stuff that ex-coaching colleagues and a few in the media are aware of). 2010 turned out to be an anomaly because the team had enough on the field talent to mask the higher level problems. I know David Graves took some flack over some off the record comments he made but that right there is what some of us saw early on from a leadership standpoint. Coaches are highly paid professionals meant to guide these young student athletes academically and athletically. The coaching staff did great in some areas but failed these student athletes in other areas. Whats done is done so now is the time to close the chapter on the June Jones era, move on with a fresh slate (so, uh, no to Glanville as well), and learn from that failed experience since trying to repeat the same thing over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
The same goes for those who had visions of June Jones possibly returning after the ASU debacle. There was a time and place for Jones at UH. He was exactly what UH needed in 1999 and left an indelible mark during his tenure. He has since moved on and after 4+ years, some UH fans also need to move on with their infatuation of June Jones returning to coach at UH because that was never in the cards (I understand the reasons why he left but the way he went about doing it is a totally different matter where he almost pulled the same thing at SMU). In his own words, one snap and clear.
My personal preference is a relatively younger hire (early 50’s or younger) with a broad amount of experience within the collegiate ranks; someone that has coached at BCS schools but also has the vision and desire to build their own program while also having higher ambitions. Sure, a younger candidate (in their 40’s) might be using it as a stepping stone, but sometimes you need that burning desire to build a program. I like what Gary Andersen has done at Utah State and you can see how Mike MacIntyre is taking what Tomey left at SJSU and moving that program in the right direction. Which leads me to my other problem with Miano. His worst kept secret was the desire to be a head coach, but only for UH. I personally have a difficult time taking anyone seriously when their aspiration is limited just to UH. I can see if the program was an established top 25 program year in and year out, but it isn’t there. So how can someone with such narrowly focused goals really lead this program to greater heights if they are just waiting in the wings in order to get their chance?
As for Chow, a good coordinator does not necessarily mean he will be a good HC. It will be interesting to see if he will go all in this time around for the position. Utah is currently a perfect scenario for him since he is back at his college alma mater and the place where he met his wife. Actually returning to Hawaii would complete the circle but again, any coach who takes the position will have some serious challenges. Someone like Chow knows that already. Does a coaching veteran like him want to deal with those sort of headaches at this juncture in his career? At his age, the objective is usually about winding down and securing their legacy. UH’s track record of sending out its football coaches on a positive note is anything but that (Tomey’s resignation to head to Arizona was the most recent exception of someone who went out on their own terms on a positive note).
We shouldn’t expect to see much experienced veterans in the pool of applicants though because it is understood in the coaching fraternity about the unique characteristics involved here. Akina, Banker, Jasper, Norwood, and Preston are pretty much the sort of names we should expect. CCSF’ George Rush is interesting because he is close friend of ex-USC coach Pete Caroll and turned him down numemous times to be an assistant at USC. JC and D1 are different animals though so I don’t know if the success he has had at that level will necessariy translate over. A part of me is hoping that folks like Freitas and Miyawaki are working behind the scenes using their contacts trying to get a slightly higher profile coach that wants the challenge of being here (in addition to the ones applying) but I know the reality and difficulties make that an unlikely scenario. If I had to choose someone out of the current known candidates, it would be Akina. Early 50’s, a intense defensive coach but with a QB background, played for Don James at UW, comes from the Tomey coaching tree but has worked with the best at Texas including being a part of the 2005 BCS national championship staff. But that is based on an incomplete picture of coaching credentials and how he has presented himself in coaching speak, not on whether or not he also possesses the administrative qualities and skill sets required to be a HC.
Ultimately, the decision will be one the administration (AD Jim Donovan BUT you know there will be feedback behind the scenes because someone like Freitas has more pull with the movers and shakers) will have to make. I am sure he is cognicant of the fact that hiring from within (someone tied to the previous regime) will mean this person will end up being on a very short leash when it comes to testing the patience of the fan base. Going with an external hire means a much longer leash because fans and boosters alike will not expect immediate results; especially if the new hire is bringing in a different system. And this is yet another reason why I advocate the cleaning the house approach. The freshness of it all brings about renewed interest and a curiosity.
George Rush is a candidate too? Wonder if he can do for UH what he’s done for CCSF

7th National Championship bid this year… ! 12-0… can he do it on the D1 level?
Kind of makes you want to find out, eh?
Do we have any videos like #657 showing the assist. coaches actually teaching? I’m talking at UH. I can never make practices so would interesting to know what’s going on or how they teach.
The idea of “distributions” and “projects” doesn’t appeal very much to me, at least if I am not sure that after installing that distribution.
You have a very good site, well constructed and very interesting i have bookmarked you hopefully you keep posting new stuff.

RE: George Rush
Ironically, with George Rush, it’s not where he’s been as a coach but, rather, where all his players have gone to that gives him strong connections and contacts around the globe.

If that’s the case we can’t hire anyone. At this point all of the applicants have failed at one point in their lives or have been in losing programs.
#695 My sentiments exactly……

Weird statement. All of the applicants are applying for the head coaching position at UH.

Having UH’s HC position as an aspiration is fine, but doing it all here I find lacking. If we had a series of very successful coaches on all sides of the game to learn from, fine, but we haven’t.
O.D.,
Keep the statement in the context that what the guy(?) says is RM was mixed in with the overriding reason that the last regime was doomed to fail from the beginning.
…not saying I agree or disagree but that’s how I read it.

These guys have been coaching for quite a while. I recall you said you want someone young.
If we do get a coach from “outside” I hope he truely has the okay to hire his own staff. If he chooses to hire any of the former assistants of UH, so be it. But I wouldn’t want any pressure on him to hire somebody that he is not sure about. This would not make the staff “one.” Good assistants are there to assist the head coach. No matter if they have different ideas or systems, they must be there to assist the head coaches’ way of doing things. They may make suggestions to the head coach, but if their suggestions is not followed, they cannot show the team their dissatisfaction nor anyone else. If they cannot handle the head coaches decisions, then they need to find another place to work or get out of the business.

I afraid in this day and age, there are no long leashes.
George Rush was the subject of the documentary movie “4th and Goal” … that will interest recruits.
Oregon State has had huge problems with their offensive and defensive lines. Their dline has been soft against the run and their oline has had problems run blocking.

I asked if UCLA’s hiring of their new coach was part of the UCLA “connection” because for many, many years, as far back as the 80s I beleive, UCLA has been hiring either former players or former coaches that was on their former staff. They became stagnent and underacheivers. Would be be in the same boat with the JJ connection?

I don’t question Miano when he says that he has only been interested in UH when it comes to being a HC…i think his record has proven it.
Curiosity shouldn’t be a reason for “cleaning house”.
