5. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2010 6:31 am

I do not think it is an autographed jersey, but if the winner wishes, I’ll ask Pomai if he wants Mr. Nasti to autograph it.

A quote from the Fresno Bee. Is this bulletin board material?

“Fresno State also has soft scheduling on its side, facing Hawaii (3-2, 1-0) and New Mexico State (0-4, 0-1) at home, then traveling to San Jose State (1-4, 0-0) and Louisiana Tech (1-4, 0-1) before the big matchup against No. 21 Nevada (5-0).”

I hope they are looking at us as soft!

That’s just naive journalism from the Fresno bee. Must of been really hot that day, creating some dilusion in the air, or denial.

Any plans for Nate to return to football?

  13. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 6:36 am

#11… coolethan… Not just naive journalism. Take a look at #20 by NYUH above. That quote, by none other than Fresno Coach Pat Hill, immediately followed the “soft scheduling” line.

  27. gigi-hawaii October 4, 2010 7:09 am

I wondered who Bradford was. So it is Bradley…

  28. Pomai October 4, 2010 7:11 am

gigi the jersey is not a game jersey nor was it worn by anyone, it is a replica jersey, made by Starter. But it is still a cool jersey.

  29. Pomai October 4, 2010 7:16 am

BTW some one asked the size of the jersey was, well it says 44 but I know I couldn’t get into it but then again it didn’t say tsaiko size. I would say it would fit some one like HiFlyer or BG pretty good.

  30. CoolEthan October 4, 2010 7:17 am

At least I didn’t “Polarize” Pilares or “Salsa” Mr. Salas. I would of been expelled or SMU’d

  35. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 4, 2010 7:31 am

I can see at least four different scenarios this coming Saturday: The first is that the run and shoot offense will continue to overpower its opponent because the offensive line will muffle the defense – a blow-out; the second is that the offensive linemen don’t do their job very well and and also commit a lot of penalties but the defense keeps Fresno on a leash – a toss-up; no matter who has the ball, the UH players and coaches stay in touch but they are over-powered – a reasonable loss; the team falls apart like it did in Colorado because ???? – an uncomfortable loss.

Any other scenarios here? Which is most likely to happen – all things considered?

  36. Jeff October 4, 2010 7:38 am

Bobby Curran really on the independence bandwagon this morning. He thinks we should leave now, and not even wait until next June!

  38. al October 4, 2010 8:29 am

tough call…pilares or moniz? moniz or salas? salas or pilares?

pilares has been just awesome and oh so deserving. his top end speed impresses this year. his route running, yac, and his penchant for not only finding the endzone but how about his pancake blocks?

moniz was lights out. i believe in the second half he had but four incompleted passes. 500 yds passing and his timely scrambling. he is “it”.

those who were there witnessed or continue to witness salas’ balls to the walls style of play

each and every down. is he the example to each warrior this year or what?

At Fresno State Pilares and Salas again repeat their performance against La Tech and combine for over 400 yards in offense, but with seconds to go in the game Moniz tosses the ball to Blount and he races past two defenders and three screwdrivers for the winning score.

One thing I noticed about Saturday’s game. The D needs to stiffen up more. Although I liked the flashes of aggressiveness, the boys need to play their assignments a little better. And tackling, although improved, still needs to get better. Don’t just go for the hit, wrap the guy up. BIG HITS MEAN NOTHING IF THE PLAYER YOU HIT DOESN’T GO DOWN AND ENDS UP SCORING!!!!

There was also one thing I didn’t like in the story about the D in yesterday’s paper. I believe (and I could be wrong and maybe read it wrong) that Coach Aranda said something to the effect that he believed that making halftime adjustments is an over-rated theory. If that is what he said/meant, I have to disagree. You need to adjust your playing style and schemes to counter what the offense is successfully doing against you.

  55. Pomai October 4, 2010 9:04 am

Warriors soft?!? Soft is good… we can lomi lomi the bulldogs to sleep!

  60. NCAA October 4, 2010 9:34 am

It was a very good game for the Warriors. They avenged last years emotional loss, played hard on defense, and clicked on offense. Kudos to the O-line and RB’s for their blocking.

One thing that I don’t get is their kick-offs. Sure they were trying to play keep away from their potent kick returner but some of those kick-offs made me scratch my head.

Quick change of subject…I too agree that the UH Soccer coach needs to be replaced.

Switch back to football…I thought the change to a 5-wide offense threw LaTech off. If not for a couple of Warrior turnovers they would have scored in the 50’s.

I swear the UH Band played the same halftime theme last game. Only difference was they faced the Mauka side for this game…or am I game-dreaming?

  61. Markazulu October 4, 2010 9:44 am

Dont take Fresno States journalist serious they dont take us serious remember in 08 when they were ranked 23 or 22 all over fresno they were saying last time Hawaii was here they hung 60+ on us this time is payback… An they were saying they were gonna hang 60 on us this time. Then they had egg on there face after we won despite a emmy performance from there kicker, an the best game ever not being called for even 1 penalty I’ve never seen 1 team go 60 minutes without 1 penalty I guess they were disciplined. Well I hope they do take Hawaii lightly that way when we show up we hit um an we hit um HARD… Just Defense needs to Wrap up instead of trying to bring the hits an not bringing them down.

  62. Pomai October 4, 2010 9:46 am

NCAA I think it’s time for the UH Band to get funky.

  63. NCAA October 4, 2010 9:59 am

    Mr. Pomai,

I like the band’s exuberance in the stands and on the field. I’m guessing that because there wasn’t enough time to prepare and rehearse a new routine for the next game, they just went with the same theme. I appreciate the hard work they put in game in and game out (Volleyball performances too). Same with the cheerleaders, Rainbow Dancers, the flag twirlers, and the baton girl!

Now does that mean there will be a kick-ass performance during the Nevada game since they have a couple of weeks to practice a new routine? I’ll be looking forward to it!

  66. Pomai October 4, 2010 10:09 am

“We understood the game plan,” said safety Shiloh Keo, who was a key cog in the Idaho defense holding the nation’s top passer – Alex Carder to 14-of-33 with one interception and just 104 yards.

I thought we had the nation’s top passer?

I have a friend who’s younger brother is in the UH marching band. He’s on the drumline.

I once told him how much I like that “Rah Rah Ree” routine, the one with the heavy and long drumline that has the rest of the band hopping and waiving their arms and instruments in the air.

He laughed and said how physically difficult it is on them but they have fun doing it.

People like to compare UH to BIG BUDGET schools with “tradition”.

Bands for schools like Ohio State and Michigan have been doing the same stuff for decades and it’s considered “tradition”.

The longest thing the UH marching band has been doing is Hawaii Five O and of course “Co-Ed” and it’s considered “old” and “lame”.

I’m sorry but the only thing lame was bringing in pre-recorded music and eliminating the live element of a marching band.

So for some I guess “tradition” in Hawaii is something changing minute to minute????

  82. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 10:48 am

Brittany Hewitt is NOT WAC player of the week?

  83. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 10:54 am

Remember the discussion last week about what car was used in Hawaii Five-0? Well, I just rewatched both the first and second shows on cbs (dot) com.

    Danno drives a new Mustang.

    McGarret drives the new Camaro.

I wonder what the rest of them drive?

  84. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 10:55 am

    RE: Hawaii Five O cars.

Ah, no wonder. I didn’t see the first episode.

But yes, McGarrett has the new Camero.

I think the rest will drive HPD Crown Vics. 😆

  88. NCAA October 4, 2010 11:10 am

Wasn’t the “Co-Ed” lyrics modified to include the spelling of W-A-R-R-I-O-R-S? The odd thing is not many fans recite the words during the playing of it by the band because they don’t know the words or Mascot Vili does his own thing with the fans that conflicts with the band.

It would sound awesome if the whole stadium spelled W-A-R-R-I-O-R-S simultaneously when the fight song is played. But again, for some reason the words are not displayed on the big screen and Mascot Vili is getting sections of the stadium to yell oblivious to the fight song.

Someone needs to coordinate the fans, the band, and the mascot.

  89. NCAA October 4, 2010 11:18 am

I wish I could own the new 2011 5.0 Mustang…but then again when the supercharged Camaro z28 comes out, look out!

Gonna agree wicchu about the mascot; bruddah was fun for awhile but I was sitting in the North EZ thinking, “No wonder no one knows the words to ‘Co-ed’, they all waiting for Vili to point to their section!” 👿

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/482082-heisman-trophy-race-five-darkhorse-candidates#page/2

    “Kealoha who?

Pilares, a WR in the high-flying Hawaii system that produced Colt Brennan’s record-setting season (in which current Miami Dolphin Davone Bess put up video-game-like stats), is flying under the radar with otherworldly receiving numbers.

Take his numbers last week into perspective:

Eighteen receptions, 217 yards, two TDs.

    Absolutely unreal.

If he stays on his current pace, he’ll produce staggering numbers of 101 receptions, 1,773 yards, and 23 TDs.

His team, system, and position will assuredly keep him from winning the award, but if he puts up this gaudy stat line and a few others drop off, he could certainly merit an invite to the ceremony.”

Going to Fresno, with a busload of buddies, to witness the second upset in three years there! I am getting a lot of inquiries how mainland fans can view the game? Any leads? Mahalo ahead of time.

  104. UHalumInOC October 4, 2010 12:29 pm

I sent this email to ESPN:

“I’ve been a subscriber to ESPN Gameplan/ESPNU for the past 4 years mainly due to the Hawaii Warrior games shown from time to time. But this year there have been zero Hawaii games broadcast. In the time slot that Hawaii plays in for it’s home games, no other college games are being played…this is the ONLY game at the time. Is there any way to broadcast some of these games?”

    They (actually) replied:

“ESPN makes its programming decisions based on a number of factors, including viewership, as reflected by ratings and the interest from advertisers and affiliates, on a nationwide basis.

We’ll be sure to let our programming executives know that our viewers would like to see more Hawaii Warriors games on our air.”

Another way of saying, if the Warriors do well, they get on.

Come on Warriors, run the table! Get UH in position to re-align with good leverage and positioning and so I can watch the team again in HD. didn’t know how spoiled I was watching the Warriors in HD against USC and Army! Hope that wasn’t the last time this season. So far the Fresno game isn’t on TV, more surprisingly neither is the Nevada game at the moment.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2010 12:30 pm

    hwnstln –

I believe Runner and/or Oceanic have online PPV feeds. They might not cover road games though.

  106. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 12:39 pm

I think win or lose, our Warriors gotta stay within the #1, – #3 ranks in passing and receiving to garner broadcast interest… How can there not be interest in the #1 passing.. #1 receiving team in the Nation?

  107. Ronnie October 4, 2010 12:40 pm

According to the Oceanic PPV site, they are showing the Fresno St game for $12.50.

  108. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 12:40 pm

Is our team better than the SMU team that beat Nevada here at Aloha last year?

  109. EDK October 4, 2010 12:43 pm

Everyone knows that scheduling games in Oct & Nov is the problem for UH going independent. Teams don’t want to come because of conference play & jet lag when they return home. So they need some incentive to come here. The NCAA already has given Hawaii an extra game exemption. What if they sanctioned UH (and every team that schedules UH in Hawaii) to play a game a week ahead of the regular season? That would take away the jet lag excuse because a team could take a week off when they returned home. But the biggest incentive for teams playing UH in Oct/Nov would be an early training start on all their opposition in Sept. Of course, if they play a game a week ahead of the regular season schedule, the opposing team would also be able to start their season a week early. Wouldn’t more teams want to schedule UH and get a week’s jump on everyone else? Just a thought.

  119. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 1:07 pm

    RE:

“Just win and you get respect”.

Ummm… maybe over the course of DECADES????

All softball season last year, I harped and complained about a lot of things being over-looked by the ESPN softball media. People said, “just win”. Well, we kept winning and still nada. We went to #1’s house and beat them back to back to advance and NADA.

    Any theories?

Let’s look at the respect the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program has garnered. Dave Shoji = 4 national titles and over 1,000 wins. 35 consecutive winning seasons… Ok, so this is what it takes.

It’s obvious, University of Hawaii student athletes and the programs HAVE to go the extra mile to get the same recognition a mainland team gets that has less accolades.

We just can’t simply win and expect respect.

    Steve,

By all accounts, she intends on “trucking” along with the rest of her teammates to get ready for the 2011 season. However, she herself has said she thinks she might not be as active in a lot of things that happen at practice for now, but she will be practicing.

Coach Coolen ain’t giving her special treatment and Majam wouldn’t want it anyway.

You like the effort by ALL the Wahine. They have been working HARD in the weight room and in their conditioning days. Lots of aching bodies out there day in and day out.

I mentioned that around the same time last fall, I saw them on Ching Field working on what looked like medicine ball and conditioning things while I was waiting for a Wahine basketball game to start.

Obviously the work paid off tremendously.

I doubt there is another D1 team in the country that could out-work the Wahine in the weightroom at this point…

Practice is today at 4pm at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and it is open to the public.

Again, see http://WWW.NAWAHINE.COM for a list of the practice schedule in our calendar of events.

  124. UHalumInOC October 4, 2010 1:13 pm

For UH these games should make getting to the Hawaii Bowl easy money:

    – Utah State

    – San Jose

    – New Mexico State

    – UNLV

The tougher test will be to win these respect game:

    – Idaho (although being at home this should be a win)

    – Fresno State (tough road game)

    – Nevada (at home, same chance as beating Fresno on the road)

    – Boise State (this one on the road…scary)

Get 2 or more wins in the respect games gets UH noticed by other conferences. Any less we’re on our own. I believe in the “what have you done for me latetly” theory…win big, win the respect games and do this the next two years and you’ll do yourself a huge favor with the next re-alignment chips start to fall.

  125. kama krab October 4, 2010 1:16 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

I would like to small kine chime in on the halftime adjustment argument. I know I am little late but here’s my thoughts. I also think that halftime adjustments are a little overrated. I say this because as a defensive football coach myself, there is not very much sound adjustments you can make during halftime. You can always tell the kids to look for this certain adjustment in there offense or look for this more in the second half but in terms of real adjustments, there is really not much you can do. Most of the halftime is mostly spent reinforcing your scheme and trying to get your guys to play at a different level. I say the most important adjustments come during the game. Countering what your opponent does is very important thus the long video sessions during the week. During the video sessions you pick up tendencies and keying points such as if you see a lineman do this then this is what you want to do. If you see a certain formation then you can look for a certain play or two. Things like these make in game adjustments even more important then halftime adjustments.

This is just my thoughts through my experience of coaching football.

    Go Warriors

  139. Garret October 4, 2010 1:32 pm

    UHalumInOC,

I’m not worried about UH making the Hawaii Bowl because of:

    SJSU

    NMSU

    UNLV

    Idaho

I think that Utah State is *much* stronger than Idaho this season and UH gets Idaho in Hawaii and has to travel to Logan for Utah State. Utah State is HARD to beat in Logan–just ask BYU this season and check what happened the last time UH went to Logan.

The trouble is, just barely making the Hawaii Bowl won’t get any interest from ESPN. UH needs to win big to attract ESPN, and that starts in Fresno this week.

If you look at the BCS computer points available to UH, which is a factor in the MWC’s decision process and in the respect schools get, these schools give almost no benefit for wins against them:

    Army

    La Tech

    NMSU

    SJSU

    UNLV

    Charleston Southern

Colorado is considered a bottom-tier Big 12 school that couldn’t afford to fire its coach before the season began. USC is down this year and started 4 DBs who never started before their game against UH and USC held out their *healthy* starting DE who led them in sacks last season (he was cleared by the doctors but they said they wanted him to be fully healthy to face Virginia the week after UH).

Beat Fresno and Nevada and UH would immediately get ESPN’s respect. Beat Fresno and the Nevada game could show up on ESPN. Beat both and the UH-BSU game would immediately be picked to be shown by ESPN and the Utah State and future games would at least be on GamePlan. Lose to Fresno and Nevada and ESPN won’t care about UH the rest of the season.

For UH to get ESPN’s interest for a future indy contract, they *need* to beat Fresno and/or Nevada. For the WAC’s future ESPN deal, *somebody* has to make sure that BSU, Nevada, and Fresno aren’t the top 3 teams this year in the WAC. I don’t see any team other than UH that can do that…the next 2 weeks could permanently change the future of UH and the possible viability of the WAC.

aaron – I was referring to this:

His team, system, and position will assuredly keep him from winning the award, but if he puts up this gaudy stat line and a few others drop off, he could certainly merit an invite to the ceremony.

  141. sportsforfun October 4, 2010 1:33 pm

    #124@UHalumInOC,

In no way is Utah State easy money. Just check out the Aggies play against Oklahoma and BYU. The SDSU game was addressed by the way they came out to play against BYU. Plus, we play them in altitude this year, so to me, this is a tough game for our Warriors!!

  142. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 1:34 pm

    Steve,

You got me on that. On the safe side, I’ll say an hour and 30 minutes, but probably two hours.

  143. LizKauai m/ October 4, 2010 1:36 pm

Yup, Garret… gotta WIN, the rest is rhetoric.

  144. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 1:40 pm

    Garret,

Couldn’t agree more. So much hinges on the next two games.

  145. sportsforfun October 4, 2010 1:40 pm

This is like a new season starting up for our Warriors beginning this week. If the Warriors win this week, it really could shake up the conference landscape this year. Kind of seams like the season is in three parts with the middle part being the most crucial!!

  146. Garret October 4, 2010 1:42 pm

Sagarin’s BCS computer ratings this week:

    3. BSU

    18. Nevada

    46. Fresno State

    72. UH

    87. Idaho

    89. Utah State

    106. La Tech

    114. SJSU

    118. NMSU

    94. Army

    100. UNLV

    202. Charleston Southern (pretty low for D-IAA)

    sportsforfun,

If UH doesn’t win during this middle part of the season, ESPN and the national media will NOT care about the final games against SJSU (#114), NMSU (#118), and UNLV (#100). Those are the types of games where ranked teams *drop* in the rankings after getting blowout wins and UH cannot get any respect from winning those games.

  148. kama krab October 4, 2010 1:46 pm

    Garret #146,

Just for reference, how much would UH’s BCS rating go up if we where to beat both Fresno and Nevada.

  149. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 1:46 pm

Good to see Garret chime in!

I was thinking the same thing about ESPN. If Hawaii can pull off this upset, the Nevada game all of a sudden looks very interesting to ESPN. Win both of those, plus no let downs until Boise State, and THAT game becomes HUGE! So, although we don’t have any games scheduled, we can almost force certain games to be aired by what we do over the next couple of weeks.

    One game at a time!

  150. Garret October 4, 2010 1:50 pm

    kama krab,

I would think that a 5-2 UH team would be in the “others receiving votes” section (ranked between #26 to #30) in the human polls and would be in the 30s in the computer rankings. The SOS is still weak, so maybe the computers would have UH in the 40s, but the voters would take notice of the wins.

  151. NCAA October 4, 2010 1:50 pm

Hey, you never know. If Nevada wins big against SJSU, ESPN may want to feature them vs. Hawaii.

  152. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 1:53 pm

Against Nevada, our D will have to be up to the task of not only facing the pistol option, but now will have to face the no-huddle pistol option.

Could be a shoot out depending on how fast Nevada’s offense will be able to move. It would be in their best interest to eat clock off the no huddle.

  153. d1島 October 4, 2010 1:53 pm

If Reno wins big, they could drop out of the Top 25….ask BS-You! 😆

  154. Garret October 4, 2010 1:54 pm

BSU is the big prize for computer points, but Nevada and Fresno are the only other schools on the schedule ahead of UH left so those are the games that can help boost UH in the computers with wins.

By the way, the BCS made Sagarin and others remove the margin of victory from their computer rankings, so winning by 1 point and by 50 counts the same. Just win and things will work out. Lose and ESPN won’t care and the attendance at Aloha Stadium will continue to look bad.

I’m worried about the UH Athletic Department budget for this year because I’m sure that UHAD projected more in ticket sales than was obtained from the last 2 home games. But JD is correct that a win over Fresno would give a nice boost to the attendance for Nevada.

  155. NCAA October 4, 2010 1:57 pm

We’re getting ahead of ourselves again. Let’s concentrate on the Fresno canines first and then we can whoop on Nevada’s canines next.

  156. Wahine_Fan October 4, 2010 1:59 pm

    UH 28

    Fresno St. 24

  157. Garret October 4, 2010 1:59 pm

*If* Nevada wins big against SJSU? SJSU just lost AT HOME to UC-Davis…and UC-Davis already lost to Portland State and Weber State.

Before the SJSU game, UC-Davis had lost 3 games and their only win was against D-II San Diego. In other words, SJSU lost to a D-IAA team that would be in last place in the Big Sky conference.

  158. Garret October 4, 2010 2:02 pm

It is hard for me to process how Nevada-SJSU is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU and UH games aren’t even on GamePlan. Last season *really* hurt UH’s TV exposure for this season.

  159. UHalumInOC October 4, 2010 2:02 pm

Garret, thanks for pointing out about USU being tough. I noticed that they got hammered by SDSU, but on the other hand SDSU is 3-1 (although their wins are against so so teams). Also, it’s tough to figure out how strong BYU is at 1-4 (though they lost to mostly quality teams). So on second thought, USU in Logan looks interesting, I agree. I do hope the defense can come in with a game plan that gives them a chance to be successful. With the offense clicking, it seems the success over the next few weeks hinges on the defense and special team consistency.

Imua Warriors, looking forward to the next few weeks for sure.

  160. Garret October 4, 2010 2:03 pm

Back to spending time with the in-laws…

  161. Markazulu October 4, 2010 2:03 pm

Take it 1 game at a time. They need to try play mistake free football an need to stop trying to make highlight plays on Defense. Just play disciplined I see good plays on D but sometimes I see them trying to lower the shoulder instead of wrapping up. I mean they couldnt bring down La Tech’s QB when they had chances can you imagine the fits Utah State and Nevada’s Qb’s are gonna cause we need at least someone on our d-line to at least be able to get past there line once in a while in 5 games we have what like 5 sacks. I hope our boys are ready to get physical it all starts in Fresno.

  162. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:05 pm

    Mr. Garret,

You never know, on any given Saturday…you can’t base everything on who beat who, so yeah, *if* Nevada wins big.

  163. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 2:07 pm

    NCAA,

No worries brah! As long as the team and the coaches don’t start thinking like us, UH will be ok! 😉

  164. Markazulu October 4, 2010 2:09 pm

Mac just better watch out for the Screw Drivers.

  165. sportsforfun October 4, 2010 2:10 pm

Warriors, lets go into Fresno on a mission and kick some Dawg tail!

  166. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 2:14 pm

UH fans also need to watch out for Fresno St fans attempting to throw red hot coins on the back of their necks.

  167. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:15 pm

    Kazz,

That reminds me. There should be a fan “You Make the Play” contest where fans design their own play and submit it to the Warrior coaching staff or UH media relations (before fall camp) and the fan whose play is considered the best will receive sideline passes for 1 game.

I like the play LaTech ran to end the first half. It was tricky and slick.

  168. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 2:18 pm

    NCAA,

How much you wanna bet there will be about a few thousand submissions from Hawai people to UH coaches calling for a TE to be involved? 🙄

  169. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:20 pm

    Kazz,

And I bet that those few thousand submissions will not win. 😆

  170. Pomai October 4, 2010 2:21 pm

After watching LaTech run the hurry up on us last game I am sure that others saw it also, we didn’t really have an answer for it, I think it will be one of the area’s that we need to improve on also need to put more pressure on the QB which we haven’t done. I still like Jake on the DE everytime they had him there he made a sack, but alast they only did that two times.

  171. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:26 pm

    Mr. Pomai,

Colorado did the same thing to the Warriors. LaTech must have been watching game film of that game. The defensive coaches should have known (or already knew) that LaTech would be running a no huddle and be prepared to defend it. Sometimes you can be prepared but the other team just executes their plays. Those things can’t be helped.

  172. Committed Road Warrior October 4, 2010 2:27 pm

I guess I shouldn’t link four websites on the same posting if I don’t want my comment to be awaiting moderation. Chalk it up to lessons learned.

  175. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:34 pm

Thank you Mr. Pomai and Kazz for listing the Wahine Softball practice schedule on the nawahine.com website. I’m impressed by their lifting and conditioning workout days.

  176. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 2:35 pm

I think the big roblem with the hurry up, is that your offense gets gassed too. It can change the outcome of a game coming out on the second half if the score is really close, but as evidenced last weekend, it can’t be sustained. La Tech outscored UH 14-10 in the third Qtr.. but lost the fourth quarter and their offense couldn’t score in the fourth.

Colorado was a different story as the lack of Oxygen was Colorado’s 14th player after their no-huddle 3rd qtr.

  177. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 2:36 pm

Just another reason why our Warrior Offense need to be really warmed up and raring to go and fire on all cylinders early in the 1st half… Maybe the Warriors should come out with their own no huddle in the 2nd qtr and try to build a substantial lead going into halftime?

  178. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 2:40 pm

    NCAA,

This is where ESPN FAILED to give the Wahine their respect. They worked hard in the weight room and on their conditioning to get to that level and no one sees it and if they do, they turn a blind eye and try to find a reason to NOT believe the facts.

Bats this and small fields that. Hawaii hits that many homers and it must be a gimmick. If UCLA hits that many homers it must be conditioning, coaching , and athleticism right??? 🙄

    DOUBLE STANDARD!!!!!! BS!!!!!!

  179. Pomai October 4, 2010 2:41 pm

OK question for all the experts, I hear a lot of because the Dline has been on the field a long time they are running out of gas, the question I have is so has the Oline so shouldn’t they also be running out of gas, so are they saying it takes more of a toll on you to rush then block???

  180. Pomai October 4, 2010 2:43 pm

NCAA please include me with Kazz, it just Pomai.

  181. NCAA October 4, 2010 2:47 pm

    Kazz,

That is right. What ESPN also fails to see is why do teams that play at altitude not have ridiculous HR stats?

    Mr Pomai,

Yes. The defense moves to the ball and pursues more.

I’m going with, the opposing Olinemen are larger and heaver than our Dline. Pushing and leaning is easier than holding up weight. But I also believe our weakness is at linebacker where they are not able to fight off the block in the gaps to make the tackles. You can see the coaches understand this by looking at the larger linebackers that were recruited this past year. On the opposite end it is more tiring to pass rush than to pass block which is why we should be running an up tempo offense which will in itself slow down the pass rush due to fatigue. Hmm, I’m sounding like a coach. I would like to hear any thoughts on this.

  191. Hawaiianbod October 4, 2010 3:01 pm

my bad. thnx kazz for da ‘golden eye’!

    sorry Davone.

  192. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 3:05 pm

    Pomai,

    UH lost two games…

Against USC, both sides were winded. Our Offense missed three 4 down possessions within the 7 or 5 yard lines to score 6 +1, but the battle was pretty even with an equal amount of punts each. I think our Defense actually did one better by grabbing a turnover, as well.

Against Colorado, both Hawaii’s Offense and Defense got gassed. Our receivers were runninbg with lead feet in the last quarter. Colorado simply used the third and fourth quarter to totally gas Hawaii due to the thin air, and won. Our Defense was on the field 8 1/2 minutes per quarter for the first three.. then 10.25 minutes in the fourth. Our offense scored touch downs only once in the 5 times they were in the redzone… they did get two field goals, but the inability to get the TDs is what hurt us and running out of gas kept us from making a comeback or defending the lead.

  193. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 3:08 pm

Our offense, however, wasn’t clicking like it is now. Hopefully that will continue to improve and the Warriors will be able to generate a substantial lead of three or more scores going into halftime.

  194. jojo ® October 4, 2010 3:13 pm

    Congrats to Pilares.

And shout out to the guy sitting next to us at the game “Pilaaahhhrez!!!”

  195. NCAA October 4, 2010 3:14 pm

From my observations, an up-tempo offense only works if you can sustain the drive. To slow down a pass rush you need to run effectively, use play action plays, move the pocket, hit your hot receiver on blitzes, and run Moniz run! Of course it helps when your O-line can dominate the D-line. Again, that’s just my observations and that is almost what the Warriors did against LaTech.

  196. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2010 3:18 pm

  204. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 3:36 pm

#171… NCAA… Our coaches had to already know about LaTech’s version of the no-huddle, kinda-hurry-up offense by watching tape. ST reported on it before the game too. Read the Outlook Section under LaTech’s Offense.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20101002_Hawaii_QB_Moniz_in_sync_with_receivers.html

LaTech forced us to stay on the field because they’d hurry to the line even though they had no plays called. They’d all turn to the sideline to await the next play called. But, since they were already up at the line of scrimmage, it’s harder to substitute in time.

RE: #4 Jersey for the contest.

I’m confused as to when that jersey originally came out. It’s cut like a game jersey and felt like an actual game ready one too but it’s from Starter and has the OLD Hawaii look to it. It couldn’t have been a practice jersey too as it still has the tag on it.

We’ve had UA for the past three years and Nike since 2005 I think, and Reebok before that.

It’s cool looking though. Very vintage indeed.

  216. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 3:51 pm

My take on offense v. defense…

Defense has to push uphill against an offensive force that is mainly moving downhill with speed. That’s also why it’s easier to make a stop when we string out runs along the line of scrimmage, than it is when the ball carrier is moving straight ahead towards the line of scrimmage.

Sounds like we’re discussing energy in science class or something.

Hawaii Five O should shoot an episode in Aloha Stadium during a real UH football game.

In fact, in two weeks they should film an episode where McGarrett and Co. are investigating a Nevada Wolfpack player for shoplifting in an ABC store….

Yeah.. It’s based on a TRUE STORY. 😆

McGarrett’s Camero can come blazing in from the North endzone tunnel and cuts off Kaepernick during a play. They beat him senselessly and toss him in the back of a HPD cruiser after finding out he was the culprit all along.

    *End scene.

  222. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:02 pm

Would it have been an NCAA violation if UH lobbied to have McGarrett say he was a UH alum and then they featured Vili and the UH football team instead?

Of course they would use actors instead of real UH student athletes, but what if???

  228. Derek October 4, 2010 4:07 pm

In 1970, Hawaii, then coached by legendary Dave Holmes beat Fresno St. 49-0, a game I saw at old Honolulu Stadium. To this day, I recall it was an unbelievable game. Fresno St. could not do anything that day. Things like that happen in football where one team doesn’t execute well and they turn the ball over many times and the other team capitalizes on everything and that’s what happen, A BLOWOUT!

Fresno St. is already thinking that this game against Hawaii is in the bank after what happened last year at Honolulu. Plus, Fresno St. is favored by 10 1/2 to 11 points. But, some things are in Hawaii’s favor. One, revenge factor to atone for last year loss. Beat the traitor who are leaving for the MWC. Fresno St. doesn’t appear to have a home run hitter like Ryan Matthews or big time receiver. Hawaii’s offense can score. The key is how well our defense will play and our special teams. I was disappointed in our kickoffs (very short) and coverage often giving La Tech good field position either w/in the 30 or even in the 40 yard lines. Thatls got to stop. Dunnachie has a bad punt. We have to stop the run better and get Fresno to turn the ball over. When said and done, it will be deja vu all over again.

    Pomai,

Our Warriors 49; Fresno St. the traitors – 0. It will be bachi time.

For Hawaii players and coaches – BE HUMBLE!!!!!

    POMAI,

    RECORD THIS SCORE FOR FUN:

    UH 0

    WAC OFFICIALS 6

Let’s see how off I am. That was the score the last time we played in Fresno in 2008, but still won despite the advantage for Fresno St.

  231. bb October 4, 2010 4:11 pm

whatever happened to that cat that was arrested in waikiki? was he ever prosecuted?

  232. CoolEthan October 4, 2010 4:13 pm

    That’s funny Kazz-

Though McGarrets Camaro can run down Crazy Legs Kaepernick to a point. Sometime da bugga gotta get outta da car for da ‘cuffing.

Crazy legs bolts to alley #5 onwards to Aloha Tower, cruize boat back to S.F.

    Yep, da bugga is faaast.

The moral of this story? McGarret should of had a ’69 SS Camaro with the tri-power carb set up. Would of run him ova’ flat!

  233. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:15 pm

i see what you did there

  235. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:18 pm

Im not even joking about the WAC officiating.

It’s horrible and LaTech got HOSED on one blatant call.

It was the one where Jenkins threw a pass to his HB, it hit the ground before the HB caught it, then ran across the field only for LaTech to get called on an illegal blocking penalty. Coach Mack challenged the pass as it hit the ground, then it was ruled an incompletion thus negating the penalty against Tech… OR SO IT WOULD SEEM…

LaTech gets called on the incompletion and THEN is still assessed the penalty AFTER the incompletion which essentially means a phantom penalty that never existed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah it benefitted us somewhat, but that call was stupid and I felt for Sonny Dykes afterwards.

    AUWE!!!!!!

  236. CoolEthan October 4, 2010 4:21 pm

The WAC Zebra Police will get some slaps this week from the proper authorities ( Comittee.).

I agree, coming into the middle of the season, the officials were not on the same page.

  237. CoolEthan October 4, 2010 4:29 pm

Btw, What do these WAC refs make per game, or season salary?

    ST, do you know?

Does Phoenix college online have the introductory courses to be a College Ref?

  238. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:30 pm

    CoolEthan,

Yeah, but McGarrett’s new Camero can turn into a robot that uses the radio to speak and has the unique ability to play matchmaker between a super model and a dorky looking fool.

  239. CoolEthan October 4, 2010 4:31 pm

I believe the refs salary in College, or pro, is recession proof.

You pick up the uniform at Foot locker, then jump on a plane, arriving several days before the game, and afters, the same.

  240. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:33 pm

The ONLY thing working in our favor against the officials in Fresno is the fact that Fresno State is NOT ranked this time and the WAC has no reason to protect them, unlike 2008…

Who can forget the BS “running into the kicker” call??????????????

  241. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 4:34 pm

Just one more thing… McGarret is driving a Ferrari in tonight’s show. What’s up with the musical cars?

  242. Pomai October 4, 2010 4:37 pm

  248. Michigan Warrior October 4, 2010 4:43 pm

I’m not familiar with this Ferrari model.

    Danno with a silver Mustang

    McGarret with a silver Camaro

Lost with a black bike (couldn’t make out what it was)

Kono with a red Chevy Cruze

And now, McGarret with a silver Ferrari

    Special teams.

  250. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:46 pm

Just DL the Magnum PI theme on your iPod and play it:

    -at the gym.

    -walking to the bathroom.

-while going #2 or #1, depending on how much liquid you’ve had

-while the bride walks down the aisle at a wedding

    -while washing your car

-while cheering on a UH touchdown

    -going up an escalator

    -going up in an elevator

    -going down an escalator

    -going down in an elevator

    -checking your email

    -while doing the laundry

    -while watching Magnum PI

-while watching The Notebook with your ole lady.

Garans it will make ANY moment more INTENSE.

  256. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 4:52 pm

    -This episode of changing cars.

-USC’s band starring in ads for the show playing OUR song!

  269. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 5:23 pm

Hope our Warriors spend extra time on the special teams leading up to the Fresno game. Gotta eliminate the dumb errors.. get the right players on the field ASAP… no offsides when the opposition is in a 4th and kicking situation or field goal… no 12th man on the field and no more illegal formation PUHLEEESE!! Got to also kick the ball deep and keep the other side pinned back near their own goal line at the start of their possessions. Do these and I believe our Warriors will roast some dogs this weekend.

  270. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 5:24 pm

    RE: 2011 Wahine Softball Schedule.

One thing that is obvious is the new addition and increase in Sunday games of the opening tournaments. Gone are the weekday games. WAC home game schedules still fit the usual format of Friday night at 6pm followed by DH on Saturday afternoons at 4pm.

The Wahine will just have to win as many games as possible as it’s obvious their RPI in 2011 will take a HIT.

Here are their non-conference opponents at home:

Texas State, South Dakota, UC-Davis, Southern Utah, Weber State, St. Bonaventure, Longwood, Miami of Ohio, CAL, BYU, Iona, and Cleveland State.

Here are their non-conference opponents on the road:

Utah, Long Beach State, Stanford, Oregon, CS Northridge, UC Riverside, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Syracuse, and Virginia.

WAC teams coming to Honolulu are:

Utah State, Nevada, Boise State, and NMSU.

The Wahine will face Fresno State, LaTech, and SJSU on the road.

    ***COMPLETE SCHEDULE AT HAWAIIATHLETICS.COM***

  274. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 5:48 pm

    Steve,

5pm is too early on a weekday. In the past it would have been at 6pm.

Also, We BEAT Oklahoma in 2009. 1-0. Courtney Baughman got the victory in the circle for us. 😎 Maybe that’s why??? 😉

But yes, I’d love to see RICKETTS vs RICKETTS in person.

  275. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 6:00 pm

I wonder if the earlier game times at Aloha are affecting the turn out? I suppose against the lesser teams it could be really detrimental… but against the better teams, those that are working on Saturday and can leave before the game starts will still make a concerted effort to get to the stadium.

  276. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 6:08 pm

Just got a text message from someone watching the Dolphins game and how great the 2006 and 07 seasons were and all this and that…

For the love of God… ENOUGH!!!!!!!! Yes those were good times and there will NEVER be another Colt, Davone, RGM, J-Riv, etc… but some people need to get over it NOW!

Remember the past, live in the present, and look forward to the future!

The future is now. Moniz is OUR QB NOW!!! Salas and Pilares are OUR receivers NOW!!! Coach Mack is our coach NOW!!!

Some people should learn to accept it and put away the old tapes.

  277. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 6:08 pm

    Made,

After one season with a 5pm start time, and this one at 5:30.

I personally would like to go back to the 6pm start time.

  278. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 6:12 pm

I don’t know if the 2007 team would have fared all that much better against the same teams we played this year. Colorado game may have been closer, but I think they would have still lost against USC.

  279. jm2375 October 4, 2010 6:16 pm

    Good evening Tsai-kos!

    Congrats to Kealoha!

So we don’t get to see Ms. Wright this season? No temper tantrums at RWSS? awwwwwww shucks.

    Pilares, Moniz, Salas.

Would Pilares be considered Damien’s all time best athlete?

  282. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 6:31 pm

    JM,

I think at her age, Margie has calmed down a bit. Wish I was there when I heard she and Coolen would just jaw-jack the heck out of the umps about each other’s teams and what not.

Nothing beats the classic slow-mo shot of Wright slamming down her clipboard in the background as Amanda Taualii ran past her after blasting a homer in the WAC tourney last season.

  283. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 6:33 pm

    Made,

No way… The way SC was exposed in the secondary, it would have been down to the wire.

Remember those missed redzone and goal line chances we had against SC???

Colt and Co. might have put those away for TDs.

  284. Steve October 4, 2010 6:33 pm

Kazz, #270, what about that Texas State game, you were not happy about how it came about, why is that??

  285. Steve October 4, 2010 6:35 pm

Kazz, #274, I would love to see that matchup, too. Maybe it will happen in the 2011-2012 athletic year.

  286. Kazz (click to support UH softball) October 4, 2010 6:42 pm

    Steve,

The Texas State game is too early for a Monday afternoon game. An hour later would have been better for attendance.

For instance, UH plays Longwood at 6pm on Monday March 14th. This is better.

  287. madeinhawaii October 4, 2010 6:42 pm

    Kazz,

Then again, USC might have penetrated the 2007 O-line better than they did this season and rushed Colt and Company. So, while it may have gone down to the wire… USC would probably still get the nod.

  288. NYUH October 4, 2010 6:50 pm

That should get all those lushes out of the parking lot and into the stadium in time to cheer on the team as they run onto the field!

Yeah… we used to tailgate and have dinner at 5:30 PM or so (a lot easier to organize the food and arrivals)… and when the sun went down, we entered the stadium. There was a carnival-like atmosphere when the sun was down!

There must be a sociological study on the day vs night festivities. A 6:30 or 7:00 pm start could positively impact season and walk-up ticket sales.

  302. jm2375 October 4, 2010 8:59 pm

SteveM – never really tailgated till the Tsaikos. Back in HS, it was just me and my father. We’d eat either in the parking lot or in our seats (you could take food in back then). I think we’d go in to our seats around 5ish. I’d bring my books along to study. I was such a nerd.

Pomai ~ Wessai Chaptah on suspension from Nancy’s for running up a huge, unpaid bar tab. Plus, Monday nite fb game got a lil-a-bit rowdy when we cheered for Bess. Who knew all the Pats fans on the island would be there! (OK, more than just a few flags for roughing the drinkers were thrown).

Anyway, after careful review, my score stands at 56 for the Warriors and 17 for the junk yard pups.

Indian Summer is kicking in this week. Bright sunny days with cool temps. It is going to be a nice stretch.

  334. wafan October 5, 2010 3:00 am

La Nina is building. Looks like it will be a brutal winter. Last time this happened we had several feet of snow down here. Usually we have just a few inches. Time to get stocked up and get the generator checked.

  335. Michigan Warrior October 5, 2010 3:22 am

    One thing weird about Five-0…

When they introduce a character in the earlier part of the show, they don’t come back to them to close that part of the story before the show ends. Even if they intend on continuing the character in a later episode, that character doesn’t return to make it a known possibility.

Like… I thought the King’s QB got shot as he walked towards the gunman? Then, moments later, McGarret and Danno meet him in the locker room as he gets a gun. They take it away from him and let him leave, but… was he shot? Did he go to the hospital? Is he trying to walk the straight and narrow? Danno’s the softy… he is the one that needs to push to visit the kid, even if he’s not the one to do the visiting. Both McGarret and Lost played for the Kings too, so they have a connection to that QB. Plus, McGarret’s weird QB # while he played was #50… so they have finally named their task force. And what happened to Lost’s and Kono’s cousin after the shootout? And who has that silver mustang now?

Even in the first show, when Victor is shot and goes over the side of the container into the water. They said his body wasn’t found. That’s it? No follow up? Hmmm…

Also, as pointed out above, names are butchered throughout the show. Someone needs to be on hand to make those corrections, even if it’s only in a voice-over capacity before release of the episode.

  336. Michigan Warrior October 5, 2010 3:33 am

Getting back to UCFresno… Didn’t I read somewhere that they still owed money to the WAC for an older lawsuit, which they still haven’t paid off yet? I know, during the discussions of this lawsuit with Fresno and Nevada, that something was said about Fresno still owing money to someone for something. And then continuing on to, how will they pay their exit fee when they still owe for other stuff, and now this lawsuit.

Wonder if the NCAA would be able to step in to force reconciliation of old bills like that, or suspend them from any NCAA-sanctioned activity unless things are settled? Not even sure what the NCAA, or any other governing body, could do about it, but just throwing it out there for discussion.

  337. Michigan Warrior October 5, 2010 3:35 am

Oh no, Wafan… not extra snow! I hate shoveling! That stuff breaks my back! Time for us to move already, really!

  338. Michigan Warrior October 5, 2010 3:37 am

Y’know… with all the accolades the SPAM Attack has been garnering… We gotta give some serious props to Coach Shaw and our offensive line!!! It’s because of them that our offense can do what it needs to do. Without protection, we’re toast!

    Michigan Warrior on 336,

Don’t hold your breath… When was the last time that you can recall where the NCAA did something to further the concept of equity / justice or just did something for all the right reasons? When push comes to shove, they always choose to err on the side of ignorance, greed & special interests.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  349. Travel Cigar Humidor October 5, 2010 8:29 pm

Does anyone else think that the baseball season is way too long? Do we really need 180 games to figure out that the Yankees and Red Socks are the best teams? No individual game serves a purpose. Doesn’t really matter to the players if they win it or lose it.
