I don’t know diddly about golf, but when I saw Hugh’s approach shot, I’m thinking, I don’t think the ball is supposed to be here.

  18. Annoddah Dave June 5, 2009 6:02 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Interesting to see the smiles on Yoshida and Wallace. It was a bit more acrimonious at the announcement of Bob Wagner’s firing when Riley stepped up and supported Wags…Hugh probably did not expect his coaches to say a thing at the press announcement. Hugh stepped on his dork on this one because we all know what happened as a result. After that fiasco, he decided to deflect criticism by having a recruitment panel rather than only him taking the blame. It is also known that he did not give Norm Chow “the time of day” when he was interested in the job of FB coach. The hallmark of leadership is the selection of personnel who are better than them. Unfortunately, leadership ego is something that most autocrats have a hard time dealing with, hence, their subordinates usually are “yes” men or those that lack sufficient talent to match theirs. Example: George Steinbrenner, Jerry Jones, Al Davis, Adolph Hitler, Julius Caesar, Herman Fraiser…..

  19. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2009 6:02 am

Now that, Brew, is quite impressive.
Know what else is impressive … knowing the Shinsato twins ….

  20. βρεω808 June 5, 2009 6:05 am

Terrific and generous gesture by Parker McLachlin! Now that is truly a royal family in Hawaii and Hawaii sports! 😀

  21. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2009 6:06 am

    Yes, yes.
I’m glad Annoddah Dave also remembered the rift between Yoshida and Wallace.
Actually, the rift that day was between Donovan and Wallace. While Wallace was going off during the news conference, Donovan said: “Wanna make it a two-for-one?”
By the way, there was a search committee involved in the vonAppen hiring, too.
But as in the vonAppen and June Jones hirings, Yoshida and Donovan were both members of the search committee.

  24. d1島 June 5, 2009 6:11 am

    Great Morning All!

Probably interesting dialogue at the 19th hole yesterday…

  25. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2009 6:12 am

Yoshida had many blowouts, usually with the other person doing the yelling. But things always managed to get patched up.
Yoshida and Riley became great friends.
Yoshida became a very good AD in the final four years on the job.
He landed good football opponents, he turned a profit and he hired June Jones. Even hiring Steinberg to run the marketing program was a fairly good idea. They ended up splitting profits after a certain point, but that was good in motivating the staff. And because Steinberg was a private entity, his workers weren’t on the state payroll.

  26. Stephen Tsai June 5, 2009 6:13 am

That’s the same thing with Panda Travel.
UH doesn’t have to pay the salaries or benefits for the Panda workers.

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes yesterday on the blog, emails, and texts. Even Donald Duck called and sang happy birthday to me. He was actually on key, but had a slight local accent.

Hoping to get out to Vegas next week to get the UH/UNLV tix. I’ll let everyone know what’s going on, and I’ll bring them with me when I visit. I’m still hoping to be at Genji’s on the 20th. If not, I’ll probably be on Oahu the 23rd and most of the 24th.

I haven’t mastered the art of shooting action photos. So I just snap when players are making contact. When you do that, it might appear players are in an awkward position, when they aren’t.
So for those critiquing, the picture might not depict the context of the technique.
By the way, Pepa’s backflip, from a standing position, was pretty amazing. Even Carmyn James was impressed.

I’d also like to wish BG an enjoyable Father’s Day, as he still serves diligently as the head of his household. Right Betty?

Mr. C needs to know that BG would have played on the Tsaiko Tsoftball Team, but he was afraid that Betty would cripple ANY opposing pitcher that ‘beaned’ her hubby! One such pitcher is still recovering from her latest outburst!

If this bill passes, professional basketball and hockey players will by taxed up to $2500 if their team plays in Tennessee. It also would tax entertainers making over $50k per year…I wonder if any concert tours would be skipping Tennessee? The NBA and NHL must be upset that Tennessee is taxing their players but *not* NFL players.

A new bill sponsored by Tennessee State Rep. G.A. Hardaway of Memphis would impose a privilege tax of up to $2,500 on professional basketball and hockey players when their teams play in Tennessee.

Under House Bill 0019, Tennessee would tax athletes and entertainers performing in the state who make more than $50,000 a year.

The tax would cover opponents of the Memphis Grizzlies and Nashville Predators for up to three games a year. However, opponents of the Tennessee Titans would be exempt.

    ayson9: HIYA!!!!

djmitcho- he was on Big O and Dukes. If I get another chance on O’Meara (right now they are talking about boring male stuff… 😈 ) – my question was about depth on the QB roster and on the roster in general – how much do “individual agendas” interfere with “team agendas” ? In college, it was all about “Believe” and “for the team”. Does Colt perceive that the Redskins can be more successful if they adopt this thinking? So far it seems like the “best individuals money can buy” scheme is not too successful.

So just so happened to hear Koakane on L&L this morning and I’m pretty much in the same boat with him and a lot of people with regards to Jim Donovan turning down the $1 million dollar offer with this un-specified SEC team.

Yeah can make money, but can also get whipped (long… long distance).

I’m sure JD had valid reasons and I am sure he consulted with Coach Mack, then they weighed their “pluses” and “minuses” and in the end they felt they had to turn down the offer.

There has to be more than meets the eye. 😎

  95. warriorfanny2 June 5, 2009 10:30 am

tiger is retooling his fairway accuracy for bethpage but his irons betrayed him today as he averaged just under 30′ proximity to the hole…..normally, tw is 14′ closer to the hole when he hits from the fairway on his approach to the green….. he has done well off the Tee in both rounds (89% driving accuracy)…..the greens are fast and agusta-like at muirfield except they dont slope as much….nevertheless, classic nicklaus green-undulations……wind was tricky today and that is always evidenced by approach shots flying over the green or dropping in the water hazards (creeks)….the surprise is seen in the expression and anquish of the pro and caddie over club selection…. TW spent time after his round practicing w his irons….further evidence he has successfully rehabed from knee surgery….nice blurb on parker by ferd, class act…..he did better today at +4 (+13), had one birdie on the par 5, 11th, his approach shot (#3) from 95 yards out was a beaut and landed flag-high, about 5′ to the hole….both birdies over 2 rounds came off the 11th which is ranked 15th at muirfield …..PL is struggling with his irons and his gir is < 25 over 2 rounds…..he ave 70% driving accuracy.

nice pics of our ol practicing unsupervised-technique drills….nothing new….are they running?
supervised or unsupervised by s&c coach?

some S&C coaches are equal parts new- and old-school: Olympic movements–lots of power cleans and squats.
A well-known HAT has his players drinkin chocolate milk after they finish their workouts…. apparently, the chocolate syrup replenishes glucose.
Evidently, our parents knew something in the first place.

  112. warriorfanny2 June 5, 2009 10:55 am

Most SEC venues are 6-time zones away, which calls for more travel-time from hawaii to venue and return.
More expenses, costly for fan support and the NCAA arrival period does not change–giving our players less time to acclimate (except for first-game scheduling).
Aside from recruiting puposes (we dont target east or south) or to impress east coast and southern poll-pundits, JD made the wise decision.
if we play well against usc it has as much or more impact than any top sec program….oregon state upgraded their status with upsets over the trojan…..i like the trend to play usc, other pac 10 schools, the academies, colorado and end of the year b-ten teams, also byu is on the radar blimp….im skeptical towards d1aa scheduling….it doesnt help our rip or front gate….however….it certainly helps us to Q for our hawaii bowl by assuming a W by virtue of scheduling.

    Can’t please everybody.

  166. madeinhawaii June 5, 2009 1:49 pm

    Kazz…

All I know was that they, UA, were grooming him to take a leadership role in the next season, although he never once started for the team.

    And then this…

    A jaw-dropping end

Defensive end Scott Smith is no longer a part of the team, bringing an end to one of the strangest careers in recent UA history.
Smith transferred to the UA last fall after spending his freshman season at Cal. He sat out the 2008 season because of NCAA transfer rules but was expected to compete for playing time during spring drills.
Smith arrived at his month-long audition with a broken jaw, the result of an off-the-field incident.
Stoops said Tuesday that Smith’s scholarship was not renewed.

    Makes you wonder, eh?

Look like he was on the receiving end of the stick when compared to the Cory Von Appen incident, though .

  167. madeinhawaii June 5, 2009 1:49 pm

    ‘Cory’ s/b ‘Cody’

  168. A-House June 5, 2009 1:55 pm

    MIH/Kazz:

IF Scott should transfer to UH, how many years can he play?

already spent 1 year at Cal, sat out last year due to transfer rule, sit out another year for transferring to UH leaving him 2 years? am I doing this figuration correctly?

  169. madeinhawaii June 5, 2009 1:57 pm

Kind of strange history with Scott. Apparently he went to Cal as a promise to his father that he would try it for a year, at least. Then after 11 months, he asked for a release an half a dozen times before finally getting one that limited him to a transfer within the PAC 10 conference only. This is very weird in that CAL is part of the PAC10 and normally schools don’t release athletes to play for the competition. Rumor is that Scott really wanted to play for Hawaii all along.

(J)J – New tourist attraction on the Westside. Listen to your echo.

time for me to start the weekend, it’s going to get UGLY in here pretty soon

  196. madeinhawaii June 5, 2009 2:59 pm

Maybe Hawaii is what Scott Smith really needs and wants. Only Scott truly knows. I would think any University or College that can make him feel at home and make him want to succeed as a student, scholar, citizen, and athlete is where those who know him best would really like to see him end up.

If the season he sat out (last season) counts, I would think that he still has three years for three.

  197. (Jesse)James June 5, 2009 3:09 pm

Homey…It’s gonna be more of an amazing attraction if I yell out “Hello….” and the echo comes back “WOT!!!”

  198. homey ℞ June 5, 2009 3:09 pm

  200. Mr C June 5, 2009 3:13 pm

If life give lemons, make lemonade. Save a bullet.

One night I got a call from a co worker. To help with a DUI arestee claiming he know me. I told them I dont know a short guy driving a yukon. Long story short they found drugs and deadly firearms in his car. To top it off he was wanted for electronic enticement of a minor and child porn.

    Lucky it was a dream.

  201. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:15 pm

JJ: At least I’m still in my child-bearing years…….Now YOU on the other hand…..(literally)

homey: Mr C knows better than to come to my defense. Totally not necessary. He’s just setting up the cage in our back yard and getting my grappling gloves ready, inviting neighbors and friends to watch a quick slap session that will involve a mommy of seven and a more-than-middle aged man who is shorter than most of her keiki.

BTW, if you’re looking for a “valley” to hear your echo, just follow homey around (only when he’s not stuffing food in that trap of his).

  202. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:17 pm

JJ: Watch out, dat buggah spit fireballs too you know!!! Talent…..pure talent….

  203. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:18 pm

homey: Why would anyone in their right mind wanna be mistaken for you?

  204. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:18 pm

Oh wait, I know….to get the kiddie discount at restaurants, right?

  205. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:19 pm

No, sorry, to get the Senior citizen discounts at Sizzlers on Tuesdays. Or is it everyday now?

  206. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:19 pm

Or, how ’bout to still be allowed to enter the bounce houses at birthday parties?

  207. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:20 pm

Maybe even get the Children admission price at the movies?

  208. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:21 pm

  209. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 3:21 pm

I don’t know how useful this will be, but for those looking for air fares, Virgin America has a sale.

    CALIFORNIA/LAS VEGAS–JUNE 2, 2009– Fares to major West
and East Coast cities from Southern California and Las
Vegas were cut to $49-$109 each way today as part of a new
Virgin America sale. The flights are up to $100 less than
    competing roundtrip fares.

The sale includes travel from June 5 to Nov. 11, with
the lowest fares available June 5-17 and August 26 to
Nov. 11. Tickets must be purchased by June 16, though
some routes might sell out quickly.

Fares from Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County and Las
    Vegas (each way):

    – San Francisco … $49
    – Seattle … $59
    – Boston … $109
    – New York City … $109
    – Washington, D.C. … $109

Travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 18 to
    Aug. 25, costs $20 more.

Virgin America’s in-flight experience has earned the
airline the title of “Best Domestic Airline” by Conde Nast
Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines. It’s the first and
only airline to offer in-flight Internet service on every
    flight.

I got hung up on around 5 times… I finally get to ask my question after the movie review. But more importantly, Colt shared stories that reveal some of the things he went through at the start of last season and the fire that burns in his belly today.

I believe Scott sat out last year as required after transferring from Cal and then showed up for spring practice with a broken jaw so while his name was on the spring roster, he never got to practice at all. Kind of borderline situation here… probably petitionable. Who knows?

If Scoma’s as good as it was ages ago, I agree with you that it’s a great place for seafood. Was in SF earlier this week, but didn’t make it to Scoma’s. I looked at their menu and I believe there was a $75 steak and lobster entrée, but I would have prefered that chiopino.

By the way, there was an impressive line up on the L&L show this morning: Phil Steele, followed by our own Tsai-Meister, followed by Mouse Davis.

  268. oldie June 5, 2009 5:13 pm

    Can’t spell: chiopino = cioppino

CRW, (when you wake up tomorrow)

If you have time tomorrow, walk down to the end of Market St. toward the Embarcadero Plaza. There’s a farmer’s market on Saturday morning outside of the Ferry Building. In the Ferry building are many eateries. The one I like the best is the Hog Island Oyster Co. for fresh oysters. If you don’t have time to drive up the coast, you can get Tomales Bay oysters there, as well as many other types. Bakeries, Japanese food, tea house, coffee, chocolate, vino all available in the Ferry Bldg. Great renovation! Another place I like to eat is in North Beach ~ Italian restaurants ~ yum! And delis…

If you’re driving back from Richmond, you can stop at Spenger’s Fish Grotto for seafood. It’s off H-80 in Berkeley off 4th St. Jazz with your dinner? Yoshi’s in Jack London Square, Oakland.

There are lots of places around Union Square. If I’d a-known you were going… Just walk around to discover places better than the diner.

    SteveM,

You could have a nice meal at Butterfly before you board your cruise. It’s at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero. The “last supper” I had in SF was at Butterfly w/ a few of my old friends.

Dayum look like Pepa got some hops. Good to see he got some athleticism…expectations are high for him to be dominant this year. Hope he remains healthy and pancakes the ish out of peeps this year!

  302. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:00 pm

Recruiting news have been minimum or not at all during Spring and entering summer- but JJ is holding four mini camps at Texas high schools this weekend with 250 expected in Dallas…Why aren’t mac and his crew doing the same…Kona, Hilo, Baldwin, Kapaa, Kahuku, UH again…got to be proactive. One camp a year isn’t going to do it, and one camp for the neighbor island is worst…

  303. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:04 pm

Hopefully coach Mac can sign a recruit for 2010 to get the ball rolling..need someone to step forward, the complaint was we don’t recruit heavily in the local schools, now we are and we got to have the high school players step it up and commit early.

  304. d1島 June 5, 2009 9:06 pm

    Ralph,

Great idea! And what should be sacrificed from the budget to do them?

Sponsorship? What then should be cut from their budgets?

  305. Colomaohana June 5, 2009 9:14 pm

al: re#233, would be ME, right??!! Haahahahahaha…

  306. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:14 pm

D1 the coaches are already paid for, i don’t think they got to rent the hs field…SMU charges $30 per camper, should cover gas money, lunch for the coaches…be creative, get a sponsor for snacks, gatorade, and I’m sure the community want to help in volunteering for registration and setup and take down for the field equipment- the camp helps their kids and program…all UH sports should get out in the community…neighbor island is a little more expensive, fly in early, fly out that night…in this slow economy, maybe its time the hotels invest in their community and sponsor the overnight stay for the coaches, after all the rooms are empty and the goodwill created is immeasurable.

  307. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:16 pm

i am sure Whitey and his Maui buddies are thinking, eh coach Mac, what about us…the scrimmage was a help but the clinic that followed was very short….

  308. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:19 pm

almost lunch time for you Pauoa boy? what do they feed you guys in the desert?

  309. d1島 June 5, 2009 9:22 pm

Sorry Ralph. Not sold that 7 separate camps with ~50 kids each would generate as much excitement for participants nor sponsors as the three they are having already.

  310. roysan16 June 5, 2009 9:23 pm

Last year’s team had a knack of shooting themselves in the foot, which often times stalled drives, gave the ball to the other team on a turn over or gave the opposition’s offense another down.

Now can you imagine how much better this year team can be if the Warriors improved on not turning over the ball, giving up sacks, blowing assignments, having mental errors, having dropped passes, missing tackles and having penalties?

In my opinion a lot better.

I read where the team is bonding together. Talk surfacing on how this team is further along in offensive schemes. Players are diligently working in the off season on becoming bigger, faster, stronger and conditioned.

Yet my hope is that some where along the way the players are complimenting their workouts with exercises and reps on how on staying focused and disciplined in the game. This is very important if the team aspires to succeed on improving from last year.

How I see the lack of discipline as being a detriment to a team, I think that if the Warriors overcome this. And stop handicapping themselves. Then the fullest potential of this team can be reached. I really think with the athletes they have–that nobody knows about, the Funaki factor, over all increase in team speed, players looking at becoming better conditioned, a new mindset to special team’s play and the offense and defense having one year under their belt under the new coaches I think it’s possible that this years Warrior team can surprise a few teams.

  311. Garret June 5, 2009 9:26 pm

    Ralph,

The 4 cities where JJ is having camps next week (the camps are not all this weekend like you stated) all have 50+ D-IA recruits within an easy driving distance…that would not be the case if UH went to 3 neighbor islands. UH has to make the best use of resources and the cost/benefit ratio isn’t the same.

JJ is just showing what he will do given a proper recruiting budget. But it is a LOT cheaper for SMU to send coaches to cities in Texas that can be driven to than it is for UH to have to fly to places.

  312. Jason June 5, 2009 9:26 pm

    Ralph,
The food over here is actually pretty good. Surprising being in the middle of nowhere. Besides the occasional MRE when in the field, when get chance to eat at the dining facilities the food is decent. Get everything you need to make a complete meal. In fact the other night had lobster tail and shrimp. At first I wasn’t going try cause I figure we in the middle of nowhere, how the heo they got seafood over here…no moa ocean near…I no trust. But ah, couldn’t resist and frikk was pretty dayum good. So not too bad, actually the dining facilities is like buffet all you can eat pretty much…

  316. Garret June 5, 2009 9:29 pm

Mac is doing a great job with the camps UH is having, Junior Day, etc. I’m happy that JD increased the recruiting budget significantly and I think UH is spending its recruiting dollars very efficiently. Suggesting that coaches have 1-day camps in 3 or 4 neighbor islands wouldn’t be the best use of UH’s resources in my opinion.

Given water shortages throughout the world, this advance could be really important–scientists have found a way of obtaining drinking water from air humidity.

  318. Garret June 5, 2009 9:31 pm

Vermont farmers switched the grain feed for cows to include more alfalfa and flaxseed instead of corn or soy, which cut methane output by 18% without affecting milk production. The key is that plants like alfalfa and flaxseed mimic the spring grasses that cows evolved to eat, unlike the corn or soy they had been fed. A dairy herder noticed that the cows are healthier, their coats are shinier, and their breath is sweet–important because cows have been belching out the greenhouse gas methane. Mainly through burping, a cow expels 200 to 400 pounds of methane a year.

Confidential US nuclear information was accidentally published on the US Government Printing Office’s web site. The 268-page document gives the addresses and specifications of US nuclear-weapons-related facilities, labs, reactors, research activities, and even told where our fuel for nuclear bombs in located! The Pentagon is concerned and one Senator called it “a virtual treasure map for terrorists.”.

  323. Ralph June 5, 2009 9:32 pm

if we consider numbers of D1 recruits and cost effectiveness, we will never hold a camp other than that at UH, there is no reason to hold camps but as an outreach program and getting the schools outside the core UH area to be inclusive…

  324. Garret June 5, 2009 9:33 pm

Very interesting Q&A which covers all of the issues explaining why I think that the Chargers will be leaving San Diego soon. They will have to give up on the Chula Vista site soon…and that would mean they have to leave San Diego.

  326. Garret June 5, 2009 9:36 pm

    Ralph,

Given the horrible financial situation UH’s Athletic Department is in, especially if even more funding is cut by the state, I don’t think they should worry about outreach programs right now. Everything Mac does really has to be cost efficient.

  327. d1島 June 5, 2009 9:37 pm

    Ralph,

Like the TV Station says, “From Hilo to Hanalei.” That’s the “core area”…

  328. d1島 June 5, 2009 9:39 pm

    Ralph,

It’s good that you thinking out of the box, but like the other guys saying, right now gotta make do with what you got 🙄

  329. Garret June 5, 2009 9:41 pm

If you draw a circle around the 4 cities JJ is having camps at next week, within a 20 minute driving distance of each city there are more D-IA recruits than in the entire state of Hawaii. The cost/benefit ratio works for them.

JJ and most of his coaches are relatively new to Texas and this will give them a chance to meet the coaches and other key members in each area. Mac has done a great job of visiting the high schools and having a coach’s camp. Having Mac and the coaches visit the local high schools and have camps at UH makes the most sense to me.

UH *did* have a very prominent practice/scrimmage on Maui this year. If they can rotate that sponsored scrimmage around the neighbor islands, that would be a more efficient use of time and money in my opinion.

  330. d1島 June 5, 2009 9:45 pm

If they can rotate that sponsored scrimmage around the neighbor islands, that would be a more efficient use of time and money in my opinion.

Plus, wen dey get to Hilo, the Tsaikos can go Hilo Hawaiian for the buffet! 🙂
…not to mention “da tour” with bhf2

btw, wea is dat guy? 😕

  331. Garret June 5, 2009 9:47 pm

If there was an unlimited budget, I’d love for UH to have 2 camps each year outside of Hawaii–one in Southern California and one in Northern California. However, that would cost a lot of money to pull off and it might be hard to draw a lot of recruits when there are so many other camps to go to.

  332. Garret June 5, 2009 9:50 pm

If UH was going to have camps outside of Manoa, I would think the cost/benefit ratio would suggest going to Laie or Kapolei. That could be good for community relations and it wouldn’t have a big travel cost.

I wonder how the culture shock is for the RB Coach?

    Hmmm…almos’ 10:30.

Do you know wea your Koakane is?

  336. Garret June 5, 2009 9:58 pm

I should go to sleep. I can’t believe I edited my two proposals for 15+ hours today and finally finished.

I think that the UH coaches are doing a great job with the resources they have. Each recruiting situation is unique, and I do not think that what works in Texas can simply be applied to Hawaii. Some things that Texas has done over the years I thought could work for UH, and Mac added the camps and Junior Day that I had been hoping for.

The only thing I’d add is that I’d like for UH to have a second Junior Day like most other schools have. They should still have the Junior Day on the day of the Warrior Bowl, but I’d love it if they would have another Junior Day in June after school is over…that way there would be no conflicts with track or other school events like there was with the Junior Day this year. I think that BYU is having a Junior Day this weekend and they already got 3 prominent commits (including the top QB recruit in the country and a WR that had been committed to Texas).

  337. Garret June 5, 2009 9:59 pm

Other schools have their second Junior Day early, even before spring practice. Texas A&M and SMU had their first Junior Day before NLI day, starting 2010 recruiting before the 2009 recruits had signed!
