Payback

There will be a just reward for the Warriors if they manage to defeat Idaho for their seventh victory, clinching a winning regular season. The coaches, who took voluntary 5 percent paycuts during last year’s difficult fiscal times, are eligible for one month’s salary as a bonus for qualifying for the Hawaii Bowl.

* * * * * *

Backup quarterback Brent Rausch has not decided whether to seek a special exemption that will allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2011. He withdrew from junior college in 2006 because of personal reasons, playing only one year at the College of Desert before signing with the Warriors in 2008. He did not take a snap last season because of a broken finger on his throwing hand. Rausch, who is on track to earning a bachelor’s degree in May, has said he is debating whether to pursue another season or move on with his life.

LInebacker Aulola Tonga, who appears to have a shoulder injury, said he will not play this season.

Congrats to Ray Hisatake, who said he signed with the San Jose SaberCats.

Ault seems like an interesting study on ego-centricity. The ultimate game next year for him will be the Warriors playing there.

Will he froth at the mouth when the canines lose at home?

  19. oxtail soup October 29, 2010 2:59 am

Great and exciting time for the players and coaches when everything comes together and ‘clicks’ on the field.

The playcalling seems to have gotten younger and more aggressive; don’t know if it’s more Rolo or Mouse, but the mindset of “unrelenting attack” is great to see again.

Oline is great. Defense, too is in attack mode. Opposing players and coaches grousing about their losses. Really fun now.

But agree 100% with Al – gotta focus. Good teams exploit mistakes, and make you pay. They play with discipline, no loosey-goosey stuff that costs points – and games. I’d rather the Warriors capitalize on the other team’s mistakes.

And don’t get distracted by the fans. It’s great that they’re supporting the team, but don’t let them distract you.

    …but yeah…nuff said.

    @Warriors –

Remember to go one success at a time in your game this Saturday against Idaho!

We’re proud of what you’ve accomplished up this point thus far, keep keeping on, and keep striving toward what you’ve set out to accomplish!

I’m still lovin’ the handshakes, it’s the wave of a whole new generation! For me, it’s the Warrior Shake! lol 😉

But now wondering, if you did the Hawaii Shaka too, could the refs say anything about excessive shakas? lol

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    De-hydrate those potato puffs!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  22. Garret October 29, 2010 4:01 am

The Hawaii Exemption? That really only benefits a league team that has to play in Hawaii. For instance, if you’re, say, Alabama, and you’re scheduled to play six home games and six road games, if you add Hawaii, you’re still only playing six home games. And the guarantee Hawaii pays will probably make the trip to the islands a break-even venture. Now, say, you’re Idaho. Suppose you played six home games and six road games last year. By playing in Hawaii, you actually make money on an extra home game because you can add a non-conference game. So, actually, the Hawaii exemption really benefits only four teams a year.

    ST,

The Hawaii Exemption has lost much of its value for CONFERENCE members also. With more games being played on non-Saturdays (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) and the need for bye weeks, 2 of the 4 WAC teams playing in Hawaii last season did *not* play an extra game and La Tech this season isn’t using the Hawaii Exemption.

When the NCAA went to 12 games and didn’t increase the season from 14 weeks, the Hawaii Exemption lost a lot of value.

  23. RainbowCliff October 29, 2010 4:02 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

From reading ALL your posts it looks like this: Hawaii will be in the WAC with Boise State leaving after this season while Fresno and Nevada will remain one more season with you. Nevada and Fresno will pay out installment fees with no interest of the lump sum that was due from the contract signed by teams that exit the conference with no faith to the by-laws of said contract. Benson from what I have read from the many posters is incompetent, a snake and has no clue of quality leadership to his position. Many of you feel he should resign and NEW leadership for a better commissioner as making over $300,000.00 a year he is not worth any PENNY of it !

No one wants to travel to Hawaii for play because of distance with no revenue being made or shared. Future consideration of Montana joining the conference is out because they can’t afford moving up to Division 1 status with Denver University, Texas State or Texas San Antonio being other schools for consideration but nothing has transpired from their end to join the WAC when defectors Boise, Fresno and Nevada leaves.

Going Independent in football and other Hawaii sport teams joining the Big West is really not going to happen as scheduling is a problem for football and the Big West has not even open their doors for consideration to the other Hawaii teams joining because of traveling and budget restraints that California State schools and UC schools are under during these tough economic times.

WOW what a complete mess as it is SAD to see UH under these shameful circumstances. I would of never thought 28 years of leaving you folks that NO one wants to travel to Hawaii for a good competive game and see your BEAUTIFUL Island of sites, culture and cuisine. Time has certainly change and I am glad I came and played for you folks way back when as Division 1 power schools wanted and came over to play UH as it was their TOP game of attractiveness to present players and future recruits.

Well good folks of Tsaiko fame all you can really do is hang in there and hope for the best as the future of Hawaii athletics is weighing heavily on the pendulum as the sand in the hour glass is slowly dissolving. Good luck vs. Idahao as a WIN is needed with a BIG game next week up in Boise !

Have a good day as I am off to the tennis courts for some GREAT exercise and sharing fellowship with some TREMENDOUS tennis people !

  24. Garret October 29, 2010 4:02 am

Congratulations to Greg Salas for his well-deserved Senior Bowl invitation.

  25. Pomai October 29, 2010 4:11 am

  26. Garret October 29, 2010 5:05 am

A KITV 4 News investigation found the last time state health department inspected the food booths was in September of 2008.

During the last Aloha Stadium inspection on Sept. 6, 2008, an inspector found hand washing violations at three food booths. None of the three locations had running water and two of them had no soap or towels, according to inspection reports reviewed by KITV 4 News.

“It sounds really simple, but that is one of the major causes of communicable diseases is not properly washing hands,” Oshiro said.

In the 2008 inspection, workers at another booth were preparing sushi when their permit restricted them to selling only pre-packaged food, according to inspection reports. An inspector also found a sandwich outlet operating without a valid food establishment permit.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Is it “Mashed Potato Time”? Hopefully, the offense and defense will kick it up to a new level of efficiency, speed, and rhythm. Now the special teams will have to get it on as well. Season fulfillment is right around the corner!

    Go Warriors! Beat the Vandals!

  29. Garret October 29, 2010 5:28 am

UTSATailgaters has learned from a source close to the program, that Montana is the most coveted program that the WAC is after.

Montana and Texas State who already field FCS football teams, could possibly be linked together and step in to fill the void left by Fresno and Nevada starting in 2012-2013. As a result, UTSA and Denver could be added as members to help solidify the WAC’s basketball programs and give it ten schools for basketball

    http://www.utsatailgaters.com/football/articles/wac-check-utsatailgaters-has-the-info

  30. Garret October 29, 2010 5:28 am

If Montana doesn’t want to join the WAC:

Then it all but reassures that both UTSA and Texas State, plus DU and Seattle would all get invites to the WAC. The wheels would then start for UTSA to apply for a waiver in order to get NCAA approval to make the unprecedented jump to FBS competition after only one year.

The source went on to confirm that the WAC has made it one of their priorities to address the geographic concerns that Louisiana Tech currently has. It’s closest conference foe is two time zones away in Las Cruces, NM. Adding both UTSA and Texas State would help the travel concerns of La Tech and also benefit NMSU.

  31. Michigan Warrior October 29, 2010 5:45 am

Weird to think that Benson gets $370k+ per year, when the 6 WAC schools won’t even get that much in total over the five years from this settlement.

ESPN should put out feelers to see who might be interested in the WAC Commissioner’s job, should it become available… even at under $400k annually.

And I agree with other suggestions yesterday… why does the WAC have to be headquartered in Colorado? We haven’t had any ties to Colorado in ages. Move it! Even Vegas would make more sense than Colorado.

  32. gigi-hawaii October 29, 2010 5:55 am

hey, Al, congratulations! I love your cheer! Cute dat!

  33. gigi-hawaii October 29, 2010 5:56 am

    ST,

it all depends on what Rausch is majoring in. If he intends to attend grad school for his masters, then maybe he should try for a 6th year.

    What’s his major?

  34. gigi-hawaii October 29, 2010 5:57 am

Also congrats to Salas! Way to go! But, what about Pilares???

  35. Michigan Warrior October 29, 2010 6:00 am

And, what is the Big West’s position with UH at the moment? How soon would we be able to move all non-football sports? For the sake of our financial and athletic future, I hope these issues can be resolved by the end of this year. We need to have a solid story for possible new recruits… in all sports. We not only must remain competitive in all sports, but we must contend for conference titles in as many sports, as often as possible… every year.

  36. BigHiloFan2 October 29, 2010 6:05 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Rainbow Cliff,

thank you for being here during the “happy times.”

mental note: it ain’t over yet. new Rainbow Cliffs are coming along.

new Warriors come along. new opportunities come along.

gotta figure out how to give us the edge when travel costs are up.

maybe we gotta travel more. maybe Hawaii upper campus gotta do

more to make it easier for Hawaii athletes to keep up with the inclass

stuffs. skype. more computers, big screens, more help with planning the viewing

time of classes for players while away, whatevaz.

    imho

Texas is a answer. we have and will continue to have exposure in Texas. the Texas schools will be good, now or eventually.

down the road… in the next 30 days, anticipate a good media blitz by UHAD, for example…

    JIM DONOVAN

plan on Hawaii continuing to have a good football program. and plan on scheduling Hawaii to play away games with very good football programs. if can, try to get those games played on “neutral” turf, but at least schedule ONE very good program away. a team we know will have a winning history. Alabama Arkansas LSU USC come to mind… back to back games with LaTech and LSU away would make my day…

and when dealing with Mr. Benson and his future scheduling deals, remind him that Hawaii neva go outta our way to run away. I’d like to think we’re like Ryan Henry… we keep our word.

    but…. first things first… I Da HO 😀

    two potatoe

  42. Bigislandkurt October 29, 2010 6:23 am

Regarding the whole “no one wants to travel to Hawaii to play us” thing, this is what athletic directors and some coaches may say

MOST coaches and virtually all players and fans LOVE to have Hawaii on their schedule

Too bad players and fans don’t set the schedule

    BIK

  43. Shoko October 29, 2010 6:43 am

Montana is overated when compared to the WAC teams. And I mean lower tiered teams like SJSU. Montana likes playing a soft schedule like Boise State. Look at their schedule in years past compared to other Big Sky teams. Not that impressive…

Case in point, Montana last year played UC Davis and won 17-10, but when playing against Fresno State, they lost by a score of 51-10. Is Montana a force to be reckon with? Two letters…NO.

  44. papajoe2 October 29, 2010 6:53 am

342 BIK, you right on that one!

  45. Michigan Warrior October 29, 2010 6:53 am

Anyone know what happened with the PAC10’s meeting in regards to Colorado and Utah joining them? Thought I read somewhere that a former UCLA president wasn’t too keen on Colorado, and was going to push to not have Colorado approved.

  46. el guapo October 29, 2010 6:57 am

#43 – 60-something scholarships vs. 85 scholarships may have something to do with it

  47. mctruck October 29, 2010 7:08 am

Since talk of Montana has come up and I’ve not seen anything to suggest that Montana is all that eager to join the WAC??? What I think is that Montana is in a wait and see mode…and basically, waiting to see if UH is going, independent; thereby, making it more feasable, from a financial stand point for their entire athletic program not having to spend an arm and leg for air travel and hotel expenses for all athletic programs.

Hello BIG WEST, you got room for UH??

  48. RainbowCliff October 29, 2010 7:12 am

#36 Bighilofan2: WOW kind sir all I can say that “the good old days” I will TREASURE !

Bobby Knight Indiana Hoosiers with sophomore Isiah Thomas, Phil Ford & Kevin O’ Koren North Carolina Dean Smith Teams with their spread offense. Larry Nance of high flying Clemson University, UNLV Hardway Eight, Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts, Devin Durrant and Greg Kite BYU team, Houston Otis Birdsong, Kurt Rambis Santa Clara, the three muskateers of Moncrief, Delph and Brewer of #1 Arkansas Razorbacks, Mark Lansburger Arizona State and BAD BOY James Hardy, Winford Boynes and Marlon Reddmen of SFU as need I say more as ALL teams mention above were ranked in the top TEN !

Football: Texas A & M, Grambling University and their marching band, Oregon State, Nebraska, South Carolina, Arizona, BYU, USC, Utah, West Virginia, Air Force, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan State and the real tough WAC who are now in the MWC.

ALL teams of the 70’s and 80’s that Hawaii played at home or away as what you had then compare to now is like having sushi & saimin with out the sea weed or spam, “no good taste” !

EVERYBODY came to play in PARADISE as players that I knew and met on opposing teams looked forward to playing the Rainbow Warriors as even boosters, family members and opposing University administrators wanted the sun, beach and the AWESOME feeling of seeing Diamond Head close and in person !

Before every game at Blaisdel during players introductions, home and visting starting players received a LEI by Hawaii cheer leaders as MANY players from that time LOVED that beautiful wahine smacking their gourgeous lips on the cheek and placing the lei around that players neck as many that I came across spoke how much they “LOVED THAT EXPERIENCE” !

Hawaii got to get back to that RETRO moment as that kind sir left an indelible impression and brought MANY players back to honey moon, live or visit the Island chains !

MAHALO for that AWESOME TIME Big Hilo as can it ever happen again ?

  49. mctruck October 29, 2010 7:15 am

It’s really too bad that the NCAA cannot help defray travel/lodging costs for teams going to Hawaii and visa-versa, seeing how UH is the only American university seperated by a very large body of water?! That’s what you call, “playing on an even plain.”

  50. mctruck October 29, 2010 7:16 am

…or “playing on an even field.”

  51. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:17 am

    Great Morning All!

Congratulations to Greg Salas! Well deserved!

He and Pilares will continue to be FFF (fantasy football favorites) by the talking heads at ESPN.

  52. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 7:18 am

It would kind of be bad if UH had to pay an exit fee of some sort — forfeiting shares, etc. — to go independent.

  53. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 7:19 am

Actually, universities get quite a government break, such as exemption from taxes, I believe.

Hey, if you’re a student and you buy something from the bookstore, no state tax, right?

  54. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:23 am

    Congratulations al!

Missed out on the cheer contest…

    Gouge their eyes out,

    Peel their skin off,

    Slice ’em, dice ’em,

Fry ’em up and serve ’em.

    Enjoy!

  55. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 7:23 am

    Re: Taxes

That’s why I’m surprised they can push the envelope so much with the BCS. Really, the BCS is a non-profit charitable entity? I’d even questions those mega coaches’ contracts awarded by SEC schools. Isn’t a charity limited in how much it can pay its administrator? Any CPAs out there?

  56. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:24 am

I believe that anyone who buys from the bookstore pays no sales tax? Same at Rainbowtique.

  57. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:26 am

Hopefully, Bradley and Pilares continue to draw interest (from NFL scouts and QB1).

  58. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 7:29 am

Also was told that there has been a lot of recent interest in Mana Silva and Jeramy Bryant.

The UH coaches believe that Adrian Thomas will land in somebody’s training camp, most likely as a free agent.

Based on potential, Laupepa Letuli also will get a lot of looks.

  59. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:30 am

btw, as Salas winds up his career, I wonder if the braintrust has their eye on a possible replacement?

One candidate I see is the Crusaders’ receiver Duke Bukoski. At 6’2″, 200 lbs. and great hands, he certainly fits the mold.

  60. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:31 am

…it’s amazing what a 6-2 record will do for a player’s pro prospects.

  61. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:33 am

Well, it seems a good thing that UH is not getting revenue from the concessions. After KITV got done with them, sales might be taking a pretty big dive!

  62. d1島 October 29, 2010 7:41 am

Have a terrific day erryboddy! Happy Aloha Friday!

No HiHo today but a pretty full schedule anyway….

  63. Ballpicker October 29, 2010 7:55 am

    Good morning warrior blog peeps.

I have a question. Can anyone refresh my memory regarding the web site that was listed two weeks ago when Hawaii played unr. It wasn’t channel surfing but a site I hadn’t seen before. Need to pass it on to ‘pops’ so he can watch this weekend.

Thanks if anyone has that info.

    Yea baby!

CoolEthan: Anybody know where someone can catch Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals? Lakers vs. Celtics? Is that archived somewhere?

  67. Buffoman October 29, 2010 8:42 am

Let’s go way outside of the box (I’m certain Garret will have a contra to this).

Have an economist and finance person figure out the cost benefit ratio of participating in the PAC 10 at what it would cost to be a member. Then factor in the cost to lease a plane. See what the cost differential would be to pay subsidies to entice the conference to wipe out travel as an issue to have Hawaii join verses the cost to lease a plane to do the same. Have the altheltic depart create a section that would work with a travel agency, Boyd gaming and the Native American folks in CA to see about doing charters to those locations when plane is not in use. Do this to offset the cost to lease. Not going to zero but anything that could be positive would help. I hear the Native American folks have tons of dollars and want business. CA is less expensive than going to NEV.

Get Senator Dan to work with Sen. Boxer and Feinstien to arrange a meeting with the PAC 10 and do the presentation.

You need the economist and the financial person to see if the numbers make sense in the long term. If not, forget about that as an option. Keep it financial. Television market? I think that Hawaii is a better market than the State of Washington or Oregon just given the possibility to the orient.

The MWC and WAC are moving furthere away from the coast. If travel subsidies are on the table for those conferences as they move east, makes sense to look at staying as close as possible to the coast to keep costs from rising without being able to control growth. The initial hit may be big, but the benefit in the long run may outweigh the initial investment.

We just need to take that travel buggaboo of the tabel to the folks we’d like to marry.

  68. Garret October 29, 2010 8:43 am

La Tech didn’t have to sign the loyalty pledge but they will get the same amount of money from Fresno/Nevada that UH and the rest of the WAC6 will. However, La Tech is getting shorted by the schedule situation–they will be at Nevada and at Fresno next year, and will have played one more road game than home game with both schools.

  69. (Jesse)James October 29, 2010 8:45 am

Good Morning Tsaikos…hope all have a great day…

T-Gate reminder, the grillin crew will be at Site 5 around 930 ish or so….come by with any food that needs grillin…we usually like to get the grillin done by 2 p.m. or so…so please bring your stuff prior to that time if it needs to be cooked…

  70. Garret October 29, 2010 8:48 am

UH could pay 100% of the Pac-12’s travel expenses and it would mean *nothing* to them.

UH cannot bring in $15 million in TV money by itself, so each Pac-12 school would be taking less money if they wanted to add UH. *That* is the key issue. Travel costs are nothing compared to TV money when you talk about Pac-12 level conferences. That is why the Pac-12, Big 10, and SEC all wanted Texas.

UH has NEVER shown that it wanted to increase its Athletic Budget to Pac-10 levels. UH has shamefully let many facilities, academic and athletic, deteriorate badly.

I’m sad to see Pilares,Salas,Bradley and even blount, but we have still a young group of players behind them. We still have Darius Bright, Alan Sampson, an Stutsman looked good, We still got some players on that side of the ball we might get some recruits to with how well Salas is doing. Good to here MANA and Jeremy getting attention. As For Rausch whatever he feels is best once a Warrior always a Warrior he should know right now Hawaii still got love for you even if you didnt start a game. We still got love.

I agree with Mctruck, Have the NCAA help with travel cost for UH and opponents. We are the most geographically remote spot on earth and that is obviously affecting our ability to get into a more stable league or even be independent.

    From the Idaho Vandals website

When the Vandals Have the Ball

The Vandals’ offense will need to put two halves together if they want to leave the island with a win. Something they didn’t do last week. On the bright side, the Vandal passing game continues to put up big numbers. Nathan Enderle completed 25-of-47 attempts for 291 yards and three touchdowns, but the passing game disappeared in the second half. Another not-so-bright spot, the Vandals generated a lowly 88 yards on 27 rushing attempts. The run game is dissolving before every Vandal fan’s eyes.

Enderle’s pocket presence and ability to spread the ball around is what makes this offense dangerous. The passing game can move the chains. No one has been able to keep Nathan Enderle from hitting Daniel Hardy. Hardy has a knack for finding the soft spots and getting open. He’s got great hands and is tough to bring down. Eric Greenwood and Maurice Shaw also do a nice job of getting open, and both are big down-field targets. But if the Vandals want to have success against the Warrior defense, they’ll have to utilize the speed of Justin Veltung. Veltung has the jets and shifty quickness to take it to the house on every touch.

Still, the offensive run blocking continues to struggle. Even with a fullback and H-Back leading the way, there is little push coming from the Vandal offense. The running duties fell to tailbacks Deonte Jackson and Princeton McCarty this season. But while McCarty had a nice 13 yard touchdown scamper and Jackson caught passes for 71 yards last weekend against the Aggies, Idaho needs more out of the two veteran runningbacks. Kama Bailey could see a few more carries in misdirection plays. Those seem to be some of the better running plays from scrimmage. Every week the offensive line is under the microscope. How many rushing yards will the Vandals get? How many sacks will they allow? Considering the recent play of the Warrior defense, this test should be one of the toughest of the season.

When the Vandals Are on D

Once again, the Vandal defense showed up. They did have their lapse before the half, and that needs to be cleaned up. But holding the Aggie offense to just 289 total yards was an impressive outing, especially considering the situation with JoJo Dickson. Other good news is that the defense held New Mexico State to eight completions. This bodes well going into an excellent passing team in the Warriors. Dickson will be a significant loss, but Treshawn Robinson has plenty of experience and big play potential. He will assume the starting role at middle linebacker. Robert Siavii and Homer Mauga retain their respective jobs on the weak and strong sides.

The defensive line played a very good game, filling the gaps and creating the clog to stop the running game. Aaron Lavarias has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Vandals. But when it comes to Hawaii’s dual-threat quarterback and a big, physical running back, there will be double the duty in stopping the run. The play of Benson Mayowa is starting to turn heads. His athleticism is finally being complimented by his growing experience. He is slowly becoming the force the Vandals needed opposite Lavarias. That’s not to say Andre Ferguson isn’t. The duo of Mayowa and Ferguson provides a nice one-two rotation that solidifies that end position. The ends need to contain Hawaii Saturday, so Lavarias, Mayowa and Ferguson and the rest will have their work cut out for them.

The Vandal defensive backfield has not seen an offense like this. There will be plenty of passes thrown, and the Warriors have two of the best receivers in the nation. Shiloh Keo and Gary Walker will continue to roam downfield at the strong safety and free safety spots, respectively. Thaad Thompson will continue to see playing time. With Isaac Butts no longer on the team, Kenny Patten takes over the cornerback position with Aaron Grymes on the other side. Grymes will most likely play against the Warriors leading receiver Greg Salas. This should be the stiffest test these guys have seen all season.

    Scouting the Warriors

The Warriors are, once again, loaded with talent. Not only are they the top team in the WAC, they are fresh off their best performance this season. Quarterback Bryant Moniz is having a monster year, averaging 365 yards per game and leading the top passing team in the nation. He already has 22 TD passes on the season. It doesn’t hurt having Greg Salas as a prime target. Salas led the nation in receptions for most of last year and that trend has not stopped. Kealoha Pilares is Moniz’s other favorite target. Both receivers are averaging over 100 yards per game.

Hawaii has also found a solid running game. Alex Green, a 6-2, 230 pound beast, is coming off his best performance of the season. His 172 yard, four-touchdown performance against Utah State earned him WAC Offensive Player of the week. The Warrior offensive line averages around 300 pounds, and boasts three juniors and two seniors. There is plenty of experience.

Offense isn’t the only thing going for the Warriors. They are coming off their best defensive performance of the 2010 season. Led by junior linebacker Corey Paredes, this defense excels in turnovers. The athletic Paredes was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week after grabbing two interceptions and logging ten tackles against Utah State. He leads the Warrior defense in tackles with 92 on the year. In fact, the defense boasts twelve interceptions and ten fumble recoveries already in 2010. The Hawaii defense is all about pressure. They are big, strong and fast. In other words; they are very athletic.

Vandals will remember the name Satele. Hawaii has a lock on this family of talented players. Liko Satele will start at left end for the Warriors. Zach Masch and Kamalu Umu are two other names Vandals fans will know by the end of the game. Masch is 6’2, 275 of pure motor, while Umu, 6’2, 295, has burst onto the defensive scene for the Warriors. There is lots of experience in this unit, especially in the defensive backfield. Safeties Spencer Smith, Richard Torres, and Mana Silva provide big, physical play roaming the field. At cornerback, seniors Lametrius Davis and Jeramy Bryant will have cover duties downfield.

What the Vandals Need To Do

In order for the Vandals to win, they will need to do a few key things in this football game.

1.) Win the game for JoJo

2.) Play hard all four quarters.

    3.) Secure the ball.

4.) Stop the run on defense.

    5.) Prepare for a shootout.

    6.) Run crisp routes.

7.) Trey Farquhar and Bobby Cowan need to build on last week’s stellar performances.

Its island time Vandals! Historically speaking, that isn’t necessarily a good thing for the Vandals. There has been little to no football success for Idaho on the island. But things are made to change, and this Vandal team is game. A little added inspiration can go a long way, and that’s what JoJo’s unfortunate situation has created.

But it must go beyond the team. Vandal fans, it’s time to show the love and support that JoJo deserves. If the team is going to win for JoJo, then the fans need to fly to the island, pile up in front of the TV or crowd around the radio and send the Vandal vibe across the ocean!

Some that come to mind include Grambling (again), Southern, Jackson State, and possibly Florida A&M (FAMU).

#26 Garret..this situation is nothing new. there has been numerous reports about the dire situation at the health dept. every now and then a story like this is featured and then nothing happens. there still a lot of calls from the public to downsize services even further. this situation was highlighted more than a couple of years ago. today, there is an article about the ag inspection unit and how it is losing one of their most experienced and committed employees. people want services but don’t want to pay for it. we want every thing free. Like Mr. Oshiro said, we shouldn’t be reacting when we could have been preventing.

  89. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 29, 2010 10:05 am

I’ve been doing some major financial analyses for a much larger planning economic development project concerning travel costs going in both directions- not just for teams but also for the visiting team’s fan base – in the top seven NCAA revenue-generating sports as well as several different international amateur and professional sports.

The major problem in working out realistic options is that the some – not all – of the local key “business/economic development” players who must be sitting at the table to make stuff happen don’t see the incredible financial value of any sport beyond the boundaries of the teams no matter what sport or whether they’re intercollegiate, professional or amateur because we’re here in Hawai`i.

Seattle, yes. San Francisco, yes. Denver or Boulder, yes. Miami, yes. Boston, yes. Cincinnati, yes. But Hawai`i? No.

That’s why folks like Don Weir and Garret are so important in making change happen.

Once Tuesday turns into Wednesday, things will be much clearer as to what will happen next.

The news last night stated the reason for the health departments non-inspection was budget cuts and the union contract requiring overtime pay during weekends and evenings. IMHO responsibility should also lie with the Stadium to inspect vendors who contract with it including Center Plate, the principle vendor. One qualified inspector could make the rounds of the vendors to check for compliance at each stadium event. There probably is a DOH off- duty inspector attending the games willing to make some side-money. Internal quality control is better than relying on an outside agency. If the stadium cannot supervise itself then it should return to allowing us to bring in outside food.

*I will refrain from making any sarcastic remarks about our “system.”

A-House ~ In the early 90’s when United flew commuter flights between Sacramento and LA, southwest air stepped in. Air fares were cut to shreds!

United charged $350 R/T from SAC to LA at the time. Southwest introduced fares on that partucular route to and from LA at $59 one way! They are still a bargain airline today.

So I think you are correct in assuming lower fares will result if they bring new blood in the market.

  119. RupertDaStupert October 29, 2010 11:20 am

Idaho is known for their “leg whips” and I don’t if you can call them a “dirty” team. TCU horned frogs had a reputation many years ago for chop blocking. I don’t need to tell you how June Jones would counteract that. All our coaches are not stupid and when the opponents play dirty, they have solutions up their sleeves. Reagan Mauia, built like a defensive lineman, hot-tempered, and played ferociously, was smartly moved to running back to protect the quarterback. He had the Dick Butkus attitude of not fearing flattening any defensive end, linebacker, conerback, coming in on a blitz, pass rush. He loved to pancake em, outright flatten them. And they feared retaliating back because he was so hot-tempered and ferocious and huge!!!! If the rumor is Jake Heun is moving to running back, that is another Reagan Mauis move. Jake is a fearless, take no prisoners ferocious animal. No opponent would dare pull a dirty leg whip, or chop block near him. He might take their heads off. Is it a coincedence that Rodney Bradley broke his leg against Idaho last year? If you stroll the streets minding your own business and suddenly attacked by thugs, wouldn’t you agree “you gotta do what you gotta do to survive”?. I’m not advocating violence, but to defend yourself, you gotta do what you gotta do. Let’s see if Idahp dares to play “dirty” tomorrow night. Hana Hou Warriors!!!!

  120. Markazulu October 29, 2010 11:20 am

Made in Hawaii thats a brilliant idea. They could gather video but show it at the end of the season that way none of our opponents get the heads up of our strategy. But I for 1 think thats a brilliant idea Made in Hawaii as long as it doesnt interfere with the team practice wise an performance.

Little bit of the pre-season training in each major sport, followed by shots in practice, on the road (airport/airplane/bus), ‘ohana building/bonding, game time, winning/celebratory faces, graduation with the customary swarming of the leis. Throw in bonus shots throughout each section with sport-specific champion banners, trophies, plus shots of coaches, the Band, Dance and Cheer teams, (full) sections of fans/students in the stadium/arena/baseball and softball field, etc.

Grrreat feature on Reagan Mauia on the AZ Cardinal NFL site! We don’t see much Cardinal football, but this should be shown to the Warriors for inspiration from a former team mate. We need his play on special teams and blocking.

Did anyone notice that Benson said that the new WAC members might get some of the Fresno/Nevada payments? So, instead of $60k/year for UH, the number could drop even more…

Benson said the WAC will distribute the money it receives from Fresno State and Nevada to the continuing members of the WAC. New members could receive part of that money, Benson said. It is subject to a vote of the WAC Board of Directors and has not even been discussed, Benson said.

AlaWai, thanks for sharing that clip on Reagan Mauia. Reagan Mauia removes all doubt. Play your leg whips, chop blocks against him, he’ll take your head off!!!!! We need Jake Heun to take that same attitude. If Idaho wants to play dirty, Jake needs to pull a Reagan. OldDiver, I can’t say or don’t know if leg whipping is “dirty” but if it’s intent is to do what it did to Rodney Bradley breaking his leg against Idaho last year, I’ll let you bloggers be the judge.

  141. RupertDaStupert October 29, 2010 12:26 pm

Green is like Ferdinand the Bull. Big but too nice. He can block of course. But not like Reagan. Dimude is too small to outmuscle ferocious charging linebackers, defensive ends, but to his credit, is an adequate blocker. We need a 240 ib Mike Tyson type. Mean and ferocious no opponent wants to take on. Jake the snake. Now is the time to let the snake loose.

  142. madeinhawaii October 29, 2010 12:30 pm

Maybe they should practice a few plays with two backs for those short yards on third/fourth and 1st and goal situations.

  143. madeinhawaii October 29, 2010 12:31 pm

The other side is already double teaming Salas or Pilares.. so the playing field is leveled.. except we get an extra blocker in the back to help punch a hole or create a diversion.

  144. Buffoman October 29, 2010 12:33 pm

Garret, by what you stated, it would appear that UH’s options, as they NEVER have put any emphasis on athletics and that they do not have any real sales potential are essentially left with what’s left and we just need to realize that we have a second level operation dreaming of a first level invite.

If that is our reality, we need to operate at that level and realize that if the WAC crumbles and no one invites and the Big West does not want us we are looking at going back to D-II, back when we played Redlands, UOP and those folks. At that point there is not even the issue of independence as if no one wants us, and we have no sales, well so be it.

If we really want football, it’s have to be at the lower tier. Or, we just become an academic institution, no athletics and the existing facilities would be used for intramural activities.

Looks to me, per your points made, we have very, very few options.

  150. UHfan808 October 29, 2010 12:56 pm

#42 BIK – I wholeheartedly agree with you!

Truth be told, I am getting a bit frustrated hearing this blog despair so before I get sucked in, I must say a few many words to address the issue:

RE coaches/athletic directors/teams/conference commissioners/whomever saying they don’t want to come to Hawaii

What a joke, don’t believe those mainland folks, it’s just a gimmick, “them” trying hard to get everyone on the bandwagon to convince others that it’s okay to say bad things about not wanting to play against Hawaii and not wanting to travel to Hawaii.

So what if they’re sked! Remember Michigan??? We. Must. Not. Let. Them. Prevail Against. Our. Detractors!

    http://www.postgameheroes.com/?p=1742

Would LOVE to see our state use our resources aka HVB, tourism industry authority, Hawaiian Airlines, UH management and students even, and etc. to brain storm ways to counter-attack our detractors.

Someone has to take the lead and for every negative point these detractors make, spin it back to our advantage. GIVE our potential opponents THE REASONS WHY their teams will want to play at Hawaii and against Hawaii. After we take every one of their misgivings and turn them into positives, then we need to use their Tom Sawyer effect against them and sell it back to them! Detract our detractors!

Why not get the UH students involved too? To digress, here’s my personal example:

My former UH teacher got us involved in the brain-storming process. She grouped us together in a brain-storming assignment in which we were to write about an improvement UH could possibly do that would ramp up campus facilities and/or functions. Years later after I graduated, I began seeing “our group’s” idea pop up around campus in the form of night lights placed throughout campus. Hey that was our idea, I thought, so neat that someone finally did it! (Yes, that’s me, I am giving credit to our group’s brainstorming work!! hehe) Our group said that if UH would place automatic night lights at strategic locations throughout campus that it would be much safer for all, especially for the women students who were sometimes faced with stalking activity, etc., when having to trek through in the early evening and at night.

You know what? That could just be a coincidence right? Well our same group also came up with the mini bus shuttles now running back and forth and around the campus. Go figure. hehe.

I digressed again, but my point simply is that UH students can productively contribute to this fight-adversity-against-UH/Hawaii cause.

If we want to turn things around and we all agree to do this, then we must brain-storm and figure out how to flip the switch in our potential opponents. Can be done, just gotta figure it out. It’s gonna take a lot of creative thinking out-of-the-box kind but (I believe) it can be done!

    1) Take the negatives that people are saying about us/Hawaii/our football team and 2) turn them into overwhelming positives. 3) Figure out how to make a stronger case against all of the things this report for example says; 4) beat them at their own game, yes, we have the talent:

Marketing and research from the San Diego Tourism Authority:

    http://www.hawaiitourismauthority.org/pps/2005_tourism_conference_rob_wigington.pps

    5) We ourselves need to believe that we are unique, that we are special, that we have our own niche in the market, that we can overcome, and that we can prevail. With some 6) creative out-of-the-box thinking, it can be done and we CAN overcome this adversity!!!

UH, HVB, HVA, Hawaiian Airlines, and Hawaii stakeholders, it is possible to work together to turn things around if that’s what we collectively want.

    Let’s make some magic!!!

GO HAWAII!!! GO WARRIORS!!! WE. BE. PROUD!!!

  151. UHfan808 October 29, 2010 12:58 pm

    5th paragraph said again lol:

We. Must. Prevail. Against. Our. Detractors!!!

  152. Garret October 29, 2010 1:03 pm

    Buffoman,

The *one* thing that UH can do to give itself options is to win football games. The three WAC teams that did that the best in 2008 and 2009 are joining the MWC. The first MWC school that made a BCS bowl joined the Pac-12.

Win and more fans go to the games, giving UHAD money to improve its programs. Win and TV ratings go up, which makes UH more valuable to conferences and makes an indy TV contract feasible. Win and you earn the BCS computer points that set schools apart…high computer ranks are golden to conferences trying to earn AQ status (MWC) and worth nothing to conferences not worried about losing AQ status (Pac-12).

What I was trying to explain was the *reality* that complete travel subsidies mean nothing to conferences at the Pac-12 level and don’t mean much to mid-level conferences like the MWC. We saw the report in early summer that JD offered travel subsidies to the MWC and was rejected.

Win enough to get into the top-25 and you have extremely high value for the BCS system. In other words, travel subsidies+UH’s record in 2008/2009 gets a rejection from the MWC, but a top 25 team WITHOUT travel subsidies would get invited to the MWC.

UH doesn’t have a huge TV market. UH isn’t going to be able to spend Pac-12-type money (actually, UH has to spend more because of higher travel costs) on its Athletic Department. This is simple reality that we can either accept or bury our heads in the sand. The only way that UH can escape the WAC is by winning football games.

Even without Utah and BYU (but with BSU, Nevada, Fresno), the MWC can pass all three BCS AQ criteria and automatically become a BCS AQ conference if they can add 1 more team that is in the top 25 in the BCS rankings. If UH can supply those points, UH has something of value that money cannot buy, that doesn’t care about TV markets, and that trumps travel time. If UH cannot do it, UH won’t get invited anywhere and can stay in the WAC or go indy.

UH has a shot at beating BSU and getting a top-20 ranking this season, which would be huge. Next year I think either UH, Fresno State, or Nevada will win the WAC. If UH wins the WAC, UH could end up in the top 25. If Nevada or Fresno State win the WAC, they will bring those points to the MWC instead.

The next 18 football games will determine the options that UH will have. You have no idea how much it would hurt me to see Nevada or Fresno State win the WAC next year.

  153. Buffoman October 29, 2010 1:09 pm

Good points, Garret. Now only if we can get the State, not just our government to start making some real investment in UH athletics, it could help bolter the winning on the fields, in the gym and in the classrooms. The dollars are here, they just need to be cultivated.

  158. d1島 October 29, 2010 1:22 pm

    from goVandals.com

…there’s nothing like a Swaggering Spud.

The Vandals are trying to hit that kind of stride after a win one, lose one pattern through the first half of the season. After a convincing victory over New Mexico State last week, Akey said his team should be able to match Hawai’i’s swagger.

“That was a 23-point WAC victory,” he said. “That was a great thing. We should be feeling good about ourselves again.”

The key, Akey said, is starting hot and staying hot. The Vandals have outscored their opponents by 40 points in the first quarter.

“Let’s come out hot again – then stay hot longer,” Akey said. “We need to start the second half like we start the first half.”

  159. Committed Road Warrior October 29, 2010 1:26 pm

With the WAC pretty much being an 8-team league next season, UH’s 2011 football schedule is complete, with the exception of the specific date we play BYU at home as well as the conference schedule.

Depending on who/how many replacements the WAC brings in for 2012, we still have a couple vacancies in the schedule. Wonder what’s in the pipes for future non-conference opponents (other than the ones we already know)…

#150 Flipping the switch; Turning negatives into positives

Sharing an email that Slugger sent that a-joe pointed out to me, thank you again!

    ———-

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.” “I wrote: “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.”

Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret.

Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.

The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling. And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it!!!

If you appreciate this message, please share. You may touch someone’s heart today.

  177. Not an Expert October 29, 2010 2:00 pm

Garett in reference to what you stated, if the MWC can add one more team in the top 25 they would qualify for AQ status. I presume if TCU stays in the MWC with the addition of the 3 WAC schools, that is a good probability. With that in mind if TCU can be accepted by another AQ conference would that not make it difficult for the MWC to qualify?

Thus the domino affect will continue to keep the non AQ conferences in check. Looking at what has played out the best scenario for the MWC and the WAC was to create a parent corporation and a subsidiary.

A mover and shaker with money to back him/her would have been able to put together a conference between the MWC and WAC schools an create an AQ conference under a corporation which will be the parent. The stronger schools to be put in a conference to meet AQ status. The weaker schools in another conference but owned as a subsidiary of that parent corporation. Thus the weaker schoold will not have any affect on the stronger schools being a seperate legal entity. As time progresses the weaker schools with the support of the parent can build their programs. In so doing with the numbers and if planned properly all the MWC and WAC schools could benefit more going forward. It will not be like the old WAC because one conference is owned by the parent and the other to be a subsidary. A few crossover games just like how the current AQ conferences play games with them. More money to come in and to share but all must think of us and not I or me.

Interesting haappenings on Ft Street Mall as I walked to my car at Kukui Plaza from 24Hr Fitness.

It was drizzling and ground was damp. Enough to get your shoes wet. I kept hearing this “skooshing” sound behind me with every step I took and thought it’s my shoes. But, the sound went from loud to soft and at times it sounded like someone with slippers was walking right behind me – so I turn around and there is no one within 20′ of me. Funny, As I crossed Beretania ST the sound stopped. It was not my shoes.

Usually, when I have “close encounters”, I get this weird feeling, goose bumps, and hair stand up. Not this time. Nada! Must be Halloween!!!!!! True story.

Looks like Idaho is doing what Nevada did when they played at Aloha Stadium…arriving into HNL the day before the game via charter flight.

The Vandals also appear to be using the same airline for their charter flight as Nevada. Hey, they’re enroute to HNL right now, per this flight track:

    http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX8745/history/20101029/2125Z/KSFO/PHNL

Lewiston-San Francisco-Honolulu is their routing. Guaranteed they’re flying non-stop back to Idaho after the game. All business it appears!

Sheeesh…ir burns me up (almost literally) when I see stuff like this. Two years ago JD moved the game start times to 5:00 and 5:30 –inadvertantly screwing 35-45% of the fans in the afternoon glare– so that the WAC teams can catch the last (commercial flight) out and save money on lodging and meals.

I really hope this is corrected next season. Only reason to have a game at 5:30 PM or earlier is for ESPN $$$$

Enjoying the Owens show on HD NFL (NY). He is the man in Toronto. Scored one TD and had a 70 yard punt return nullified by a penalty. And I’ve only seen the 4thQ. Montreal just moved to TD behind.

Get the Tsaikos ready for da GAME! Of course..it may have to be watered down a bit..nothing like RK did for the Warriors at USU.

Don’t ask me exactly what happened but Montreal came back to win. It was really weird, the after an interception Montreal tried a FG. They missed but Toronto kicked it back at them, somebody punted the ball back into the endzone where a TOR player did a soccer kick to get it back out but it didn’t make it and Montreal recovered it for a TD. Yeah, it was that crazy. In general a fun game. TOR should give Colt a call though. Love to see a Colt -Chad connection.

  202. NYUH October 29, 2010 4:22 pm

Looking forward to the game tomorrow. I’m sure our Warriors will be focused and ready for some payback. Got a feeling they are going to miss Mike Iupati, that guy was awesome and doing a pretty good job with the 49ers.

It will be interesting to see what happens at MLB with Lolotai seemingly doing a pretty good job last week. (Loving ESPN3 but still hard to track all the defensive players)

    Afternoon Gang…

Okay, I know it isn’t Halloween yet but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up already since people have been asking about this since August. Please reserve the date.

    4th Annual Tsaiko Christmas Party

    Date: Saturday, December 18th

    Time: 5:30 p.m.

    Place: Murphy’s Bar and Grill

    2 Merchant Street

Parking is available at Harbor Court (where the old Palomino Restaurant used to be); the City Municipal Lot (on Bethel Street I believe); a pay lot across from Murphys (but that lot is pretty pricey); and on street parking.

We always have a blast at this holiday fest. Prizes are usually available and we usually collect donations/funds for a donation to some holiday charity (i.e. Foodbank; Lokahi Project). This year we’ll also be celebrating our Warriors return to the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve.

More information to follow in the coming weeks. Menu will probably be order as you go unless I can work out some kind of dinner plan with Don Murphy.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

    SteveM #192:

I agree with you in your feelings with that. The only teams to actually come out to Hawai’i via commercial flights so far were Charleston Southern and La. Tech.

Perhaps this is short-sighted of me, but if UHAD knows that our opponent is going to be flying to/from HNL via charter flight, rather than your typical commercial flight, I propose moving the kickoff time from 5:30pm to 7:00pm (or later).

They’ll have a charter plane waiting for them at the airport, and if they’re obviously not going to spend Saturday night on ‘Oahu, what the heck does it matter what time the game starts? It’s not like they’ll be constrained by the airlines’ flight schedule…the charter plane’s gonna be sitting there waiting for them whether the game ends at 8:30pm or midnight.

    Just a thought.

  210. HawaiiMongoose October 29, 2010 5:29 pm

The Big Sky Conference will be making an expansion announcement on Monday:

    http://www.wdaz.com/event/article/id/4376

It appears Southern Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota will be joining the Big Sky.

If true, my take is that Montana is NOT coming to the WAC. Without Montana this expansion would put the Big Sky at 11 all-sports members and 13 football-playing members. That makes no sense. With Montana, the conference would have 12 all-sports members and 14 football-playing members, allowing a split into east-west divisions to control travel expense.

  211. Garret October 29, 2010 5:29 pm

Poor Chad Owens…he almost single-handedly won the game for his team. Instead of hosting a playoff game next week, his team has to go on the road to Hamilton.

The finish took the shine of an incredible night for Owens who amassed 308 combined yards — not including a 70-yard punt return TD negated by a penalty — and added a touchdown reception in what has become one of the most amazing seasons in CFL history.

As if that weren’t enough, the diminutive Hawaiian also recovered a fumble at midfield after frightening the Alouettes into trying a short kickoff.

  212. CoolEthan October 29, 2010 5:32 pm

As much as I appreciate the Montana Football program ( Go Grizzlies)

Hope they stay in their own respective conference , along with Mont. St.

Hawaii doesn’t want to have anything to do with that venue, especially from Mid – October on.

Stay focused on The land of Texas with better weather and recruiting

  213. Garret October 29, 2010 5:33 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

I’m sure that Montana already told the WAC they weren’t moving up. That is why the WAC could go ahead with the plans for both Texas schools. The spin was that the WAC didn’t want to wait…but if Montana wanted to move up the WAC would have been told by now.

This is kind of like how North Texas commissioned a “feasibility study” when the WAC invited them to leave the Sun Belt for the WAC…schools get “feasibility studies” when they aren’t interested. If they are interested they just say “yes”.

  215. Garret October 29, 2010 6:14 pm

BSU is sure making sure they get some ESPN games while they are in the MWC…or maybe it is ESPN making deals to keep some BSU games.

BSU is getting about a million to open next season at Mississippi.

BSU just signed a deal today to open 2012 at Michigan State for $1.2 million. The deal supposedly includes a game in Boise in 2022 and in Lansing in 2023…but I’m guessing Michigan State buys out of it.

This season BSU got $1.25 million to open the season at Redskins stadium on ESPN. UH moved its USC game to Thursday (hurting attendance) and get $75k from ESPN. The key is that ESPN *owns* TV rights to UH home games, so BSU has been playing road games or neutral site games for the big bucks.

$1.25 million vs. $75k. Both shown by the same network during the first week of the season.

If UH stays in the WAC and doesn’t do neutral site games like I have been talking about, UH is throwing away a HUGE recruiting tool (play the games in SoCal or NorCal where UH recruits most) and a LOT of money.

  216. HawaiiMongoose October 29, 2010 6:16 pm

Garret, from what I’ve read on the Montana fan board and elsewhere it seems to me that Montana has actually had a tough time making a decision. Getting North Dakota and South Dakota to agree to join the Big Sky (instead of the Summit League which they were also considering) may have finally tipped the balance because it addresses Montana’s strong desire to be in a conference with more “academic peers”. Montana’s AD cited this desire as an important factor in deciding what conference to be in, and both North Dakota and South Dakota are well-respected research institutions.

This is somewhat corroborated by a post on the Montana board today that says the Dakotas are being brought into the Big Sky as part of a deal with Montana’s new president Engstrom, who previously worked in the administration at South Dakota. The poster claims that Engstrom would only accept Southern Utah (a relatively poor academic institution) into the conference on the condition that the two “peers” of Montana be brought in at the same time.

In any case, it looks like the WAC additions will be the Texas schools, Denver and Seattle. That’s not the best outcome from a stability standpoint since the conference has no remaining expansion options if another football-playing member leaves. However it does add some good media markets. And I do agree with CoolEthan that trips to Montana in the winter wouldn’t be very appealing to UH teams.

  217. madeinhawaii October 29, 2010 6:24 pm

    HawaiiMongoose…

The WAC has no “other” football school considerations in the current economic climate. When the economy shifts back into overdrive, … and even before that, there may be a few other schools that might come a knocking…

  218. Garret October 29, 2010 6:29 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

I agree with your analysis. I’ve been reading a Montana newspaper and following things there periodically, but I’ve appreciated how you have kept everybody informed with everything…you are on top of this stuff more than anyone else I’ve seen.

The biggest short-term worry for UH being in the WAC is that Houston’s AD tweeted something about conference realignment is still going on. If they invite La Tech, everybody knows La Tech will go.

I agree that there doesn’t seem to be *any* other team out there that can move up to D-IA. So, if UH goes indy, what happens to the WAC? If La Tech leaves? If NMSU runs out of money? If the MWC invites another WAC team? The WAC is playing the last 2 football cards they have (UT-SA, TXST)…the WAC is out of cards but the game isn’t over.

  219. madeinhawaii October 29, 2010 6:31 pm

heh… tsk tsk.. sounds like Montana used Benson to get what it wanted out of its conference..

  220. kama krab October 29, 2010 6:34 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Well with what looks like a no from Montana, at least we have Texas State and UT-San Antonio ready to go. Hopefully UH can build on this year and come back next year doing the same thing they are doing this year. If they do than maybe my prayers will come true. Till then, I just enjoy what we have and celebrate the opportunity to be able to cheer on such a great bunch of young braddahs in our Warriors.

When teams travel to other cities by plane, how many days will they stay in a city? Do they get there a day before and leave right after the game? Somewhat like what Nevada does and now Idaho is doing.

The WAC leadership needed or needs to be innovative in helping sell their conference, being able to go to paradise (Hawaii) every other year. Have all schools use Hawaii as an advantage instead of looking at it as a disadvantage. The schools need to look at Hawaii as an investment to help them recruit. Each year 4 conference teams come to Hawaii, the league needs to create their bye week after coming to Hawaii. Why is this so difficult? Thus the team can still come in the day before the game but leave 2 days later. With the help of the HVB and businesses, cost discounts to be extended. These young athletes may one day want to return with their friends and family due to their positive experiences of the island. Would this also help the opposing coaches to touch bases with potential recruits.

I’m sure many young people on these teams would like to spend a few days in the islands and play tourist, if they are going to travel this far anyway. It’s a matter of perspective although doing so may cost a little more money.

The past 15 years the attitude taken has worked against the conference as a whole by not using Hawaii as a selling point. Why doe BYU want to renew playing with Hawaii besides having a sister school out on the north shore?

    Been thinking (dangerous)

Fresno and Nevada will be around for 2 more years- I think that is just what the doctor ordered, here’s why:

Time. TCU may be leaving the MWC. Without TCU, Boise St. is in a much worse position then ever before with the MWC looking like this: minus Utah, minus BYU, minus TCU, minus Fresno, minus Nevada. Boise gains nothing.

Who gained everything, the WAC. If TCU goes Nevada and Fresno would be much better off in the WAC and rumor is a D1 team already in the MWC is considering coming back to the WAC.

What would seal the deal for this to happen-UH needs to put all other sports in another conference. For UH anyway, the WAC would be just for football. You have to imagine flying a volleyball team, a baseball team, a golf team, a swim team, and others, they loose money for many schools. It’s not that teams do not want to travel to hawaii-its that schools do not want to lose money on non-football sports that are in the same conference.

So in time what we might see which is the best for UH and all other schools affected are a

    1) TCU-less MWC

    2) UH puts other sports in other conferences

    3) UNR and FSU then stay put

    4) An old WAC team like Air Force comes back

    5) Expansion of the WAC with other schools

If this does not get you AQ status, at least the MWC crumbles and the WAC becomes the chip leader. I believe the MWC is very fearful of the time factor which allows FSU and UNR a wait and see approach as to what TCU does. And if UH helps the situation for the other schools financially by putting other sports in another conference, then that may help FSU and UNR to stay while making the WAC more fiscally manageable for other schools and UH gets to keep its level of competition or eve raise it in football while being under the protection of a conference.

moocher…i too am dangerous when i am thinking. actually, though nevada and fresno st will only play us on the gridiron just one more time in 2011. the agreement with the wac is through june 30, 2012. which means we won’t play football together after fall 2011.

  243. al October 29, 2010 11:38 pm

effectively speaking…our timetable for any football related decisions is june 30, 2011. to facillitate scheduling an independent schedule or with new friends.

anything short of that date will impact all schedules.

  244. al October 29, 2010 11:40 pm

for the sake of women’s volleyball i hope we can go to the big west. it is no longer fun competing in the wac’s subpar women’s volleyball league. even the once probable contenders have become pretenders.

  245. al October 29, 2010 11:44 pm

i know tsai brought this up once…howver, it is hard to pin blame on the wac woes on benson.

he doesn’t control tv money, the driving force with all this conference realighments.

benson is akin to the steersman in a 9 man canoe.

the oarsmen’s strength determines how fast they get their and if they can even get their. the oarsmen being the wac’s hierarchy and their strength of programs and marketability.

AL #245 While Benson may be the steersman of a nine person canoe, are the presidents of the various universities pulling their oars or is it a case where the presidents are sitting in the canoe watching Benson paddling?

It could also be that the presidents have delegated to Benson their sports authority.

I agree that women’s volleyball should be in the Big West as should all other sports other than football.

we should go west young man…yah, tom, we should take all sports except football to the big west. leaving the football team in the wac is a not that bad idea for now.

this scenario helps hawaii with its travel costs for the other sports. the other wac schools would like this too since their budgets would shrink for the minor sports.

perhaps football in the wac would be a prized commodity in the future as long as we win and to the point where the wac really needs us then we won’t have to worry about travel subsidies in the future..

I can understand people being mad.

I can understand people being mad at Benson.

Bottom line is Nevada, Fresno State and Boise State don’t want to be in the WAC.

It doesn’t matter who’s running the WAC.

And as much as as we like to think otherwise, people don’t want to be in a league with Hawaii. It’s too far. It’s too expensive. The distance between Hawaii and the West Coast is the distance between the West Coast and the East Coast.

Hawaii doesn’t bring anything to the table. It’s not a big TV market.

Same logic, there’s no incentive for a team to play Hawaii in October or November if the Warriors go independent. Remember, UH can schedule non-conference games in those months right now, and it can’t find any takers.

    the hard facts folks.

  258. Pomai October 30, 2010 1:25 am

#254 al – I agree but the only draw back is that we would have to come up with $$$ for travel for the other Big West schools, because with us in their conference it increases their cost, which I am sure that they will make part of the package for us to join.

  259. Pomai October 30, 2010 1:30 am

al sad to say but that not only applies to the WAC but i’m afraid all other conferences. Not only the distance but to spend all that money to get your butt whipped.

  260. BigHiloFan2 October 30, 2010 2:04 am

    Looking ahead…

Re: WAC meets with 5 possible new schools

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl extended to 2013.

If Hawaii goes independent starting with the 2012 season, Hawaii will be assured a berth in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl with a winning record for 2012, and 2013.

Football is the engine that drives the UH Athletic Department, the POWERS THAT BE must inform the WAC, no later than December 31, 2010, of their intention of leaving the WAC effective July 1, 2012.

With everyone clueless as to what, when, where the program is heading, what can Coach Mac or his staff tell potential recruits for the Class of 2011? LOL…reportedly other schools already are telling potential Hawaii recruits that the WAC is not a viable conference. And adding UT San Antonio, Texas State and Montana to replace Boise, Fresno, and Nevada is a step back. And you know what, down the line if UT San Antonio and Montana become successful, i.e. Boise, the WAC will be just a stepping stone.

And it’s a no brainer; the BWC (all California schools) is a better conference for its revenue producing programs (basketball, volleyball, and baseball) and non-revenue programs. Those long-travel time to LA Tech, UT San Antonio, Texas State, Montana, New Mexico State, Utah State, and Idaho will be cut in half, and lessen the $-impact of paying travel subsidies to the BWC schools.

And by giving the WAC notice before January 2011, it will give Donovan and his staff sufficient time to complete the 2012, 2013, and 2014, football schedule with creditable opponents.

    Coach Mack,

big tip, big tip, big tip. spend your energy on recruiting. let Rolo make the decisions on 4th down, point afters or 2 point plays. the perception is that he is young and aggressive. you’ve done a great great job in giving him opportunity and a fearless demeanor. our offense is playing up to potential, and we have you to thank.

so I say to you, sir, Thank You!

but you got one drawback. you done such a good job smackin da crap outta da Freskies, Nevada and da soon to be lyin on da couch potatoes, nobody like play us anymo. hmmm…

  267. CoolEthan October 30, 2010 5:11 am

The 12 hour countdown clock has just started for Kickoff.

I ordered that 2 am wake up call for Idaho, just to remind them that all of us in Hawaii love to wake up early for College gameday!

    hehe

  268. mctruck October 30, 2010 5:14 am

Idaho has got some beef on the o-line and especially up the middle, which explains why they do well in passing offense. Looks like UH has got to get some blitzes going and some speedy guys coming off the edges to pressure the qb into rushing his passes…if he gets them off at all; and if our db’s shut down the Idaho recievers, that would make it even better. I am looking for a lot of 4th downs-n-punt situations. Let’s send them potato’s back to Idaho….thinking???..TARO and ULU!!!

  269. mctruck October 30, 2010 5:26 am

angles, angles, angles…….trying to manhandle Idaho’s o-line might just provide a stand-still at best, so I think UH’s d-line would need to cross-block to allow for our lb’s to blitz up the middle, along with fast guys coming off of the edges.

  270. mctruck October 30, 2010 5:28 am

WOW!!, talkin bout potato’s making me hungry…..chow for now, I’m off to feed m face!!!

mctruck on 49 and DPK on 74,

In a perfect world, the NCAA would be a visionary and dynamic entity that strives for equity and fair play. You know as well as I do that they are more prone toward cronyism, favoritism and special interests. Their track record speaks for itself, especially in its snubs and dispositions in many case of Hawaii sports teams. Sorry to be so cynical, but it’s for good reason.

  283. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 30, 2010 7:15 am

    Good Morning Everyone…

I wonder if the Pac Ten would consider us for football only if we won for the next ten-years making a bowl in every one of them…keeping our other sports in the “Big West”?

One can dream…who thought Boise would be where they are now ten years ago…

Having said that, i like what’s transpired with Fresno, Nevada and the Texas schools…things are working out…

  295. Da Punchbowl Kid October 30, 2010 7:43 am

    Hey mctruck and protector!

The NCAA is what it is. We all know that. Perhaps Sen. Inouye could meet with NCAA. Many factors warrant special consideration for Hawaii. A small television market and remote location shouldn’t preclude a viable college football program. That’s where the NCAA can take the lead.

  296. Da Punchbowl Kid October 30, 2010 7:47 am

    Howzit whitey!

JaM – Scattered showers here on the slopes of Punchbowl last night. Currently sunny, rain drying up.

  297. whitey October 30, 2010 7:48 am

PolyMom, those are statements that most of the recruiters use to discourage recruits from going to Hawaii, but the one thing that Hawaii has and no ohter school can come close to is ohana or family. So while recruiters talk, it is always about money. When UH talks, it is about the player’s life and future with da warriors’ ohana. That is what you must choose between when making a decision.

  298. manoa October 30, 2010 8:06 am

I don’t see it happening, but things the NCAA could do to help us would be the following:

Limit conference games go 8 games, so there are 4 non-conference games. Right now confernces like the Pac 10 are going to 9 games plus a 10th championship game and restricting non-conference games to the start or very early in the season (no end of season game for us).

Require half of non-conference games be played on the road and give double credit for games in Hawaii (Hawaii game worth two road games for the requirement).

  299. protector October 30, 2010 8:55 am

    mctruck,

It would be great if there was a mechanism to revitalize or change the leadership in the NCAA and there was actual support (by influential people, I mean) to give it some impetus. Unfortunately, only legislation or congressional edict could do it and I seriously doubt the majority would vote for it. In all likelihood, their vested interests would asssure it won’t happen. Still, if there was a powerful grassroots type of movement that had influential spokespeople at the forefront, who knows? That would at least give me some hope.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Great information! Keep in mind, too, that “added vitamins and minerals” on a pet food means chemically-synthesized ones. These can have negative consequences, like those seen recently with the Blue Buffalo recall due to too much added vitamin D. Nature’s Logic foods get all nutrients from 100% natural ingredients, like whole foods.

you may want to check your options in this site. for one they offer personal service by way of a personal Account Service Manager or ASM to be your mentor, consultant and trading partner as well. being a newbie it is greatly recommended for you to have the services of an ASM so you could discuss live over the phone, email or chat your trading strategies and what other analyses you need to improve your trading skills. the best thing these days is they offer great rebates if you open an account now, the higher the level the bigger rebates you can get. if you are looking for a user friendly site. you will have to consider looking at this site.
