Pardon the interruption

Apparently there was some storm-related problem that … oh, OK, that excuse wasn’t going to work. But it appeared the server was down this morning.

Anyhoo, we’re back.

For the Rainbow Warriors, it was a nice end to a difficult season. But there were close games, Joey Iosefa and Sean Schroeder came through big in the second half, and this was the rare season in which people looked forward to seeing a punter punt.

Recruiting is under way, some transfers have been inquiring, and there might even be a surprising return or two.

We’ll see you at the luau. Stay dry, folks.

Through all the bs that he faced sean schroder has ended his UH career with great performance’s and deserves some credit. Hope everyone has a good day be safe

    Top 5?

  5. MattyBoy December 1, 2013 11:31 am

Yes Sean Schroeder definitely deserves credit. He definitely proved me wrong. Excellent job Sean.

  6. papajoe2 December 1, 2013 11:31 am

    Good morning everybody!

  7. Abust53 December 1, 2013 11:33 am

Maybe they put Joey Iosefa at QB

  8. Ka`imiloa December 1, 2013 11:36 am

I’m glad this season is over. Despite our record, I think the team improved. However, I don’t see any way we can get better without adding an experienced assistant or two. I’m not a big Chow fan but he’s still going to be our coach so why waste time bitching about it.

  9. kev-1 December 1, 2013 11:36 am

I agree that Sean Schroeder has performed well. As someone who has been critical of his play in the past, I tip my hat.

This was the first game that I was unable to watch, either in person or on TV. At least I got to watch the replay this morning. What an emotional game.

As frustrating as it has been this season as a fan, I am going to miss UH football. Congrats and farewell to the seniors. Good luck in your future endeavors.

  10. SteveM December 1, 2013 11:36 am

    Good morning everyone!

Feels good to earn a win.

  11. Buffoman December 1, 2013 11:37 am

Winning is not something that happens. It is an earned event where everyone on a team has to contribute to when called upon to deliver.. I think the men got that piece to their puzzle. Joey really demonstrated this when he returned. We saw his mates grab onto this last night. It was nice to watch.

The officiating was more than suspect. Some of those calls and no calls on UH for unsportmanship were questionable.

  12. tommui December 1, 2013 11:39 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Rain or not, it is a good day – we won!

And better yet, the boo-birds haven’t appeared – or is that tempting fate?

  13. A-House December 1, 2013 11:40 am

    Congratulations to the Rainbow Warriors!!!!!!!!!!

Watching the replay this morning, the 2 consecutive unsportsman penalties were NOT deserving – Brendan did grab the ball carrier by the leg and lift him up and Kennedy just pushed an Army player who was going after Brendan – the officials were too “sensitive” for Army and against Hawaii – well, that could be said of every game in 2013.

Starting to feel good about 2014 – only big question will be the QB position with none having much game experience and untested – Graham and Woosley – would it not be interesting if Tuileta comes in and wins the starting job?

Lest I forget to extend deepest sympathy to the Wilson family and his teammates for his untimely passing. May he find eternal peace!

  14. A-House December 1, 2013 11:43 am

AS Mrs A-House said to me, “it’s a really nice day, sun is shining tho we cannot see it, the wind is like a gentle breeze, and the rain will nourish all living things

see what a “win” can do for attitude!

  15. Papololoco December 1, 2013 11:44 am

Congrats on the win last night, NOW LET’S GO GET DINO BABERS!

  16. A-House December 1, 2013 11:45 am

I do hope the Chow has learned from the past 2 years in “play calling” and hope he “gives up” the OC position and become a true HC for Hawaii.

Media is continually broadcasting that there will be some coaching changes, but not for Chow in 2014.

  17. A-House December 1, 2013 11:46 am

Interestingly, Ken Nuimatalolo has supposedly told Navy that this will be his last extension and will return to Hawaii – he simply just misses home!!!!!!!!!

  18. PowderPuff December 1, 2013 11:49 am

Wow, those three months just blazed by (2013 season)…now we’ve got 9 more until the Huskies come. Thanks to all of the Tsaikos who bought tickets to tonight’s Nā Koa/Alec Waterhouse Memorial Lū‘au. We’ll try to do some tweets and posts from there tonight too.

  19. A-House December 1, 2013 11:50 am

there goes my good neighbor teasing us again about “transfers” and I will infer that his remark is to former local players who want to return

Other wise, it must be about some “big time BCS player” or 2 or 3 who witnessed 2013 and want to make their contribution to 2014 and beyond – welcome home!

  20. Ka`imiloa December 1, 2013 11:58 am

I gotta say, I like having the retro unis back. They remind me of growing up seeing dominating defense and smash mouth football. I know lots of people who don’t but the uniforms we’ve had for the past couple of years have become really stale.

  21. tommui December 1, 2013 11:59 am

    20.A-HOUSE:

You suggesting that a QB from Oregon wants to come home?

(just starting a rumor – if other bloggers can start rumors … )

  22. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 1, 2013 12:12 pm

I never received any information about the luau in the mail or via e-mail. Where is it being held?

The weather here in Kailua is really junk, but hopefully in town, it’s much nicersince we’re coming to The Stan to watch the Wahine play the Gophers at 5 pm.

  23. Not an Expert December 1, 2013 12:13 pm

Chow needs to sell his complaints to the official. Too much yelling at them and he must be getting a reputation. When you keep yelling over and over it loses its effect and works against your team. Be calm and point things out and sell your idea. Yelling at them should be far and in between.

Defense had better pursuit in this game with Army. The DC better understand he does not have studs maybe a couple and make them realize they need to be swarming to the ball on every play. That mentality needs to be practiced so in game time it comes automatically.

  24. markazulu December 1, 2013 12:14 pm

I hope UH keeps the H-logo and helmet but do something about the Uniforms.

  25. kev-1 December 1, 2013 12:18 pm

I’d like to see the old school rainbow incorporated into the new style uniform. The tapa style seems to need an infusion of creativity. Maybe some rainbow color could help.

Old school or new school, I want to see new uni’s. I am bored with the old one already. UH needs to keep up with the trend that most every other college program is running with – mixing it up. It helps marketing and recruiting. Yes, winning is all that matters, what they wear doesn’t, yada yada yada. But marketing and recruiting also matters.

  26. markazulu December 1, 2013 12:19 pm

The adjustments I hope to see is more on the defensive side which i was surprised to see because after the USC game i thought we would be pretty stout and at times we were i think we are in the top 50 in Tackles for Loss. But we were getting torched by so many offenses who also had there best outputs on us.

  27. markazulu December 1, 2013 12:20 pm

Exactly @kev-1 look at oregon all the Uniforms they have i think UH should try to incorporate The H-Logo with the color scheme of the bow Uni and try to do a combination of both.

  28. kev-1 December 1, 2013 12:27 pm

Oregon is the best example of uniform creativity, but I don’t like to use them as an example when making a case for Hawaii to do something similar because the naysayers come out with “UH doesn’t have the money that Oregon has . . . or the Nike connections, etc.” So I leave them out.

Look at many other teams around the country . . . Oregon St., Rutgers, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Boise St., Oklahoma St., and the list goes on and on . . . even ARMY mixes it up.

  29. kev-1 December 1, 2013 12:27 pm

BUT, I’d take defensive improvements before uniform improvements any day.

  30. kev-1 December 1, 2013 12:32 pm

Nevada, Arizona, Arizona St., TCU, S. Carolina, Washington, Washington St., Colorado St. Baylor, Missouri, etc, etc, etc, . . .

    2. UH plays most games at night. Bring back the Black.
    3. Where did the zebras come from? Penalties Army 2-13 yds UH 11-127yds.
    4. When Army was gassed after a succession of Iosefa runs a player went down and stayed
down buying some breathing time and saving a TO. Rather than arguing the point with the ref. HC should have used the same tactic when Army changed QBs and drove down the field.

*Congratulations on the W, Warriors. Well played and earned for a lost brother. May the AD & HC work now on that 13th game for next season.

I knew you could do it! Hehehehe

    CHEEEHUUUUUU!!!

  36. whats up December 1, 2013 1:06 pm

My grade of the Army game.

    Offense:B+
Defense: D+ still bad, Kennedy Tuimasealii is a beast! Yap Beau came out hitting hard.
    Special Teams:B
Coaching: C- Demo, Chow and Jordan Wynn did a pretty good job, but Kaumeyer WTF.
Crowd: A+ Got to give it to the fans for coming out with a losing team!
    Ultimate Warrior: Scott Harding MVP

Refs: F- That was one of the most biased group of refs I’ve seen at Aloha Stadium. If the boys sneezed in the wrong direction its was a personal foul/unsportsmanlike penalty. The refs kept Army in the game, if not it would have been a blowout. I don’t think the refs are tired of Chow every coach yells and works the refs over, especially when bad calls are coming in bunches. The refs were favoring Army big time on military night and Chow was yelling because the amount of BS calls was ridiculous. Shoot Nick Saban, Gus Malzan, Les Miles, Urban Meyer and many other coaches would be yelling at the refs for last nights biased calls.

Keep Chow? We have no choice he will be back next season, but anything less than a Hawaii bowl invite is a failure next season for Chow and his entire coaching staff.

I think @moocher that might be one of the nicest combination designs i’ve seen i think Under Armor should consider taking that blue print and try to do things with that.

  41. Moocher December 1, 2013 1:20 pm

didnt get a chance to se the game, would love to see it somehow.

did TK’s D almost lose the game again?

i been saying for quite sometime chow’s O is far less suspect then TK’s D. if there is a coaching change yes i’d say TK should be the first to be given the much mahalo and aloha along with a parting koa bowl and walked to a waiting departing canoe.

i think jordan wynn seems to be doing ok with chow. with a full season for those two being together, wynn knowing the offense and the personnel, hehe, as much as i’d like to see a more seasoned OC come in, i’m almost afraid to shake up what looks like to be a gelling O.

but the D seemingly never got on track.

although gang, have you really looked at the roster and seen all the freshmen, sophs, and juniors coming back??? holy smokes, i cant remember a UH team this stacked coming in since 2006-2007. not saying going undefeated, just saying with the O on a roll from mid-season on next year is really something to look forward to…just need a QB and some D.

    RIP WW

  42. tommui December 1, 2013 1:21 pm

    Moocher #37

Maybe Jamie can come up with a design like the old Rainbow Warrior helmet decal but substitute the “H” at the end of the rainbow.

  43. hossana December 1, 2013 1:22 pm

In the last several games, we finally get to see the type of offense we expected from Chow but what was disappointing was the defense. There is no excuse for the disarray and disjointed conglomeration of defensive schemes as every team just ran and passed roughshod over UH and the only thing that kept Hawaii in the game was the offensive production. It seems that the defensive players were thinking too much on what to do instead of just reacting instinctively…Chow needs to make a chg. with the defensive coaches….look at Texas, h.c. got rid of his d.c. in mid-season and even the Florida h.c. made chgs. albeit it was his offensive coordinator and offensive line coach and Chow needs to do the same. Geezus, we could easily have lost to a mediocre team in Army last nite but, luck finally was on our side, and we were able to prevail. I think next year will be a good year if they can revamp the defense….TUIMASELII WILL BE A BEST AND POSSIBLE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN THE CONFERENCE……if he doesn’t get injured……oh, well….let’s hope for the best next year……….

  44. markazulu December 1, 2013 1:22 pm

Yeah i know what you mean kev-1 we cant compete with there check book but we could compete with creativity at least lol.

But like you said i dont care if they come out in hot pink as long as they play tough defense and spectacular offense. I hope what we saw from the offense in the final couple of games carry on to next year.

  45. Moocher December 1, 2013 1:25 pm

i think yes it definitely is a good place to start…UA owes the team a sweet uni after making us the guinea pigs saying that the diarrhea stripes were good for hamstrings…i don’t think any other school bought into or was given that “hi-tech” design.

  46. PurpleMaple December 1, 2013 1:28 pm

There were 27,000 fans at the game. For an 0-11 team going in, ain’t that something?

  47. Moocher December 1, 2013 1:34 pm

for the helmet maybe keep the H but make a rainbow band as the center stripe?
or yeah like how it was mentioned that old menehune running in the rainbow helmet, maybe replace the menehune with the H?

trying to incorporate the H with any rainbow look on the helmet or color change gonna its share of likes and dont likes but hey, what else is new

  48. Silva December 1, 2013 1:35 pm

Since Hawaii is now called Rainbow Warriors. They should wear a different color jersey every game. Mix it up like week 1 is blue, week 2 is red, week 3 is yellow. You catch my drift. Oregon is limited to green, yellow, black, white, and silver. Make it happen under armour. I’m sure I’m not the 1st person to think of this. Also with the helmets and pants and cleets. Just saying.

  49. markazulu December 1, 2013 1:35 pm

    @moocher
Defense held Army below there average
Hawaii had the 28-7 halftime lead but the 3rd quarter woes happened again
Army started the 2nd half with a new QB Aj Schurr scored on there opening drive surprised UH with a onside kick scored again and basically scored 21 unanswered points to tie the game with UH with 6:17 left in the 3rd quarter
Hawaii scored on there next 2 drives after army tied it
Steven Lakalaka and Joey Iosefa both shared the load combining for 258 yards rushing
Sean Schroder had another great game (23 of 33 for 322 yards)
Chris Gant and Scott Harding had pretty good games to
AJ schurr end up scoring 4 tds in the 2nd half
Hawaii also had TONS of personal foul called on them

If it’s not at least 40,000 then you’re losing money.

  51. Moocher December 1, 2013 1:45 pm

i hope marketing and BJ the AD can once and for all come up with a way for international fans to watch UH games. i think people at home or in the states do not realize people like me only had a chance to watch 3 games this year that we could find on the Internet. the MWC website, if you not running the latest adobe flash you cant watch the games shown on the MWC website. for whatever reasons, depending on your OS you may not be able to download the latest adobe flash.

i’m bringing this up because if BJ wants to market in Asia where i’m at, hehe, hey, find a way to get UH games to us other then the current platforms. i’ve been away for 10 years, singapore, thailand, philippines…and in 10 years i think ive seen no more then 10-15 Hawaii games.

please find a better way for us fans overseas to watch and help market hawaii football. if you can do that i’m pretty sure hawaii fans will help market the team since we can watch and share the games with friends on a sunday morning around noon time in asia when its 6pm saturday evening in hawaii

  55. kev-1 December 1, 2013 2:23 pm

Filling the stands with 40,000 fans is much to ask of many D-1 college programs, especially Hawaii. If it is true that UH needs 40K or loses money, they need to abandon the stadium and play at Punahou instead. Look at most of the other teams in our conference and their stadium capacity. That is where we should be . . . in the 30K’s.

    #54 Nelekona:

I liked JJ and his offense.

But hiring a coach that has to revamp the offense, not to mention recruiting the right players …

We would have the pitchfolk and flaming torches people again wondering why we hired him instead of Urban or whoever.

And then there will be people screaming why the present coach left the cupboards empty.

  60. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 3:06 pm

41… Yes TK’s made things much more interesting than it should have been. Army scored TDs on their first 3 drives after halftime to tie the game. Then the D gives up an inexplicable 45+yard pass play to Army on 4th and long with 2:30 or so in the clock to set up the Army TD to close the gap to a TD. At that time all UH had to do to ice the game was force Army to dink and dunk and burn clock. Giving up a 1st down wasn’t the maddening thing, the thing that bothers me is that a big play was given up to allow Army to score quickly still have chance to tie game.

43… Beast or Best? LOL. Either way KT looks like he’s going to be a real good one.

Kaumeyer has got to be relieved of his duties. Looking back at this year, Kaumeyer’s defense allowed opponents to score on 8 of 12 of their first drive of 2nd halves. 7 of those 8 were TDs.

The D also allowed 19 TDs and 3 FGs in opponents drives in the third quarter. It’s very telling of Kaumeyer’s ability to adjust to opponents adjustments after halftime. There’s only been a couple games (CSU and SJSU) where the defense played better in 2nd half than the 1st half.

  61. tommui December 1, 2013 3:07 pm

I support the UH teams. I wear the “H” proudly as well as the Rainbow. Whatever represents the UH teams.

I support them even if I prefer blue and gold color combinations over (forest or kelly) green and white.

A rose by any other name …

Of course if the UH decides to have orange uniforms like OSU, I might make an exception.

  62. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 3:08 pm

48… That would be cool, but I don’t think UH has a good enough relationship with Under Armour to make it happen.

  63. WAR December 1, 2013 3:10 pm

1win and this blog goes giddy. LOL!

  64. Maui808 December 1, 2013 3:34 pm

  65. Boolakanaka December 1, 2013 3:39 pm

Aloha all! Congrats in finally putting the pieces together for a win! I spent some of my airport time looking at 4-5 of the warrior games one of my coaching buddies put-together. Needless to say, there are many areas in which our boys are either deficit or need vast improvement. That said, I will hold my comments to the defensive side of the ball, which I think, most of us would agree, needs the most attention.

From my precursory review the two most glaring things that jump out from film review are perimeter speed and our back end. Consistently beaten to the corners and our DB play was plain woeful at times. When you are not able to handle an opponents 1 and 2 receivers, it places severe limitations on what schemes and packages you can run. Further, the backside help on long plays, was at times, passive or non-existent. Usually, the backside corner is instructed to take a wide backside angle to be the potential last line of defense, in many instances, this did not occur. These are strictly effort plays, and so, it’s dissapointing. Oh well, just my 2 cents.

  66. azwarrior22 December 1, 2013 3:47 pm

UH Football can support 40K+. They did back in the early 8O’s when I was still at UH. I remember Abilene Christian (FCS school) drew 41,000 fans and most games drew 46000+ fans and there were sell outs for marquee games. They need to re-package the only game in town before PPV. All big-time programs easily draw 50K+ fans. It was done before and it could be done again.

  67. 76south December 1, 2013 3:47 pm

    RIP W.W!
With Joey being hurt at the beginning of the season, Aofaga Wily and Diocemy Sainte Juste had to take a lot of reps during their freshman year. With both Joey and Boom Lakalaka returning next season should we redshirt Aofaga and Diocemy? You would still have Jason Muraoka and Josh Gonda (and even Samson Anguay) as back ups.

  68. 808Fringe December 1, 2013 3:52 pm

    Wyoming coach pau.

Wyoming: Sources tell us that head coach Dave Christensen plans to resign.

Update> The school has now announced that they have parted ways with Christensen and have begun their search for a new head coach.

ALOHA to the Warrior Seniors!. MAHALO for your commitment and dedication to Warrior Football. This was a tough season but you guys stood together and stood tall. Through all the turmoil, you kept your noses to the task at hand.
Some lesser committed peeps would have thrown in the towel and ask the coach to quit, blame other teammates and gone into the corner to pout.
Your lesson on how to persevere has not gone unnoticed.

Looking towards 2014, it looks GREAT! IMUA WARRIORS!

  73. Derek December 1, 2013 4:33 pm

As seen last night, inside the 5, Iosefa should be used as a wildcat QB or even use him as an option QB. If we did that against Wyoming in OT I am certain that we would have scored, instead of giving it to him 5 to 7 yards deep in the backfield. As strong as he is, he can be over the center and get at least 1 or 2 yards on QB sneaks almost every time. It’s not rocket science, just use your best assets to be successful.

  74. Papololoco December 1, 2013 5:22 pm

People talking about bringing back JJ, I like JJ but we need a fresh new face, so done who’s younger and has a bright future. JJ is on his way to retirement but Dino Babers is just getting started. His team is ranked #2 in the FCS in only his 2nd year at EIU. He has an exciting offense that can bring fans back the stadium and win games.

  75. 3-Prong December 1, 2013 5:27 pm

So we’re hosting eh! Go Bows!

  76. gobows December 1, 2013 5:28 pm

does dino babers have any interest in the hawaii job???

coulda used that jump pass the other week in ot. but tebow would be proud.

i really thought they would score 50+ on army, guess i was wrong.

contrary to some radio callers last night, army is not a good team. they were cheating all night and nothing got called. interior linemen were set and shifting before the snap of the ball.

I don’t know but at least we have to try and get him. Doing nothing is not an option, IMHO the future of UH Athletics is at stake. If they do nothing and bring back this coaching staff then they will lose money and may have to cut programs.

  79. gobows December 1, 2013 5:46 pm

idaho state, 23-11 (14-6) won the big sky conference tournament.

statistically they are on par with the wahine, but their competition is no where near the same level.
idaho state swept ucr at the start of the season.

would have been interesting if arizona had made it to hawaii.

    other kine news-

USC: ESPN’s Joe Schad reports the top two candidates for the USC head coaching job are

Chris Petersen and James Franklin. A new head coach could be named this week.

  82. dihudfan December 1, 2013 6:12 pm

    the last wuz the best!!!

  83. jiminy cricket December 1, 2013 6:45 pm

Bring back JJ. JJ and Hawaii football are synonymous for ESPN who loves to show JJ’s games. JJ is in the mold of Bill Snyder at Kansas State and Ault at Nevada. Both built their programs up and when they left, the program went to the dogs. They both returned and the program went back to national prominence again. This is what I foresee for Warrior football when (not if) JJ returns. Hawaii is his destiny. Hawaii is his home.

  84. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 6:54 pm

83… As Tsai said, JJ is not coming back to coach UH. UH burned all of their bridges with JJ that led to his departure. I need to see it before I believe that notion. I think JJ would retire before coming back to UH

In other news, the MWC #2 paid coach, Wyoming’s Dave Christensen, has been fired. That makes QB coach Jason Gesser a free agent so to speak. Ben Jay and Norm Chow…. Go and bring Gesser home to coach at UH.

  85. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 7:11 pm

I think Jordan Wynn has another year as GA, so Gesser makes all the sense in the world for a lateral move to QB coach or possibly a pseudo-OC job like Rolo under Chris Ault.

Financially speaking, which is probably the most dominant factor in coaching changes for UH right now, Gesser wouldn’t cost very much. He’s hasn’t been around as a coach long enough to be sought after by a big program. Also, the coaching tree he played under at WSU aren’t HC’s anywhere, so that means he has no fast track to OC at any other major program unless he goes FCS or cash strapped FBS program.

  86. el burro sabio December 1, 2013 7:12 pm

Brent Pease is also looking for work.

  87. moocher December 1, 2013 7:29 pm

    bring back JJ, haha, dimentia

chows offense has been clicking, we just never saw it cause we kept losing and expecting the O to score more and more when the D should’ve been giving up less and less. i mean what can only like 5 people see this?

we’re fully loaded for next year…bring back JJ hehe and bring in dinoB hehe jokers hehe

change the DC, and we’ll be in a bowl game with chow as head coach.

TaylorG had better be ready, no free rides, brah been watching and learning for 2 seasons now

  88. RedZone December 1, 2013 7:31 pm

Shauna hit a 3 at the end of regulation and the Rainbow Wahine went into over time to beat Minnesota to win the tournament.

    Way to go Wahine.

  89. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 7:33 pm

86… I saw that also. He’d also be a good addition at UH, but the price tag is the big question mark with him.

Pease won’t be jobless for very long. Being Boise’s OC during their run to prominence will command a lot of attention and a pretty strong salary. It was good enough to go to Florida. He’s going to take a pay cut at his next destination, but I’m doubting he’ll go for $120k at UH or whatever we can muster.

  90. PurpleMaple December 1, 2013 7:34 pm

Looks like Micah Kapoi, OT, Kapolei HS has de-committed and has committed to Wisconsin as of today.

  91. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 7:39 pm

Plus, if Peterson lands the USC job, Pease would be a top candidate to re-unite with CP.

I’m doubting Peterson leaves Boise. He’s got zero pressure, he’s getting paid well and Boise has very reasonable living expenses. It would take a massive salary and 5 years minimum with a hefty buyout to lure Peterson to USC.

USC can afford that, but I have a hard time believing Peterson wants to be in the spotlight and microscope at the most high profile job in Los Angeles.

  92. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 7:47 pm

    90. That’s too bad. But can’t blame him. If you’re a OLine prospect and Wisconsin comes calling, you’d be taking that offer. I see Gary Anderson has a Hawaiian on staff. Kapoi is on his official recruiting trip in Madison right now.

Always a good chance to get Kapoi on the transfer back home after he gets so sit through the full winter weather in Madison. There’s no lau lau, Gina’s, or Aiea Bowl kitchen in Madison.

  93. Former UH Athlete December 1, 2013 7:51 pm

At least Kapoi went to a Big Ten power. Losing recruits to a fellow conference member is much more concerning regarding the staff.

Hawaii is always going to lose recruits to the big boy schools.

  94. oneseason December 1, 2013 7:57 pm

It was very nice hearing the Rainbow Warriors get a win. And after two years … two and twenty (against fully FBS teams) … and too few experienced coaches on staff. 2014 awaits the leadership of the HC and AD to staff up and coach up the team for a more challenging next season. Let’s not be penny wise and get pounded for being foolish.

    97. The website says tentative (http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-14/mtn-west/2014-hawaii-warriors-football-schedule.php), but that seems to refer to location and date, not school.

MWC home games: “Nevada, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming”
MWC road games: “Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, San Jose State”

    95. The 2014 schedule looks a lot like the 2013 one with respect to Mountain & West games … http://www.themwc.com/#!/standings?sport=m-footbl
    West Division
    1. Fresno State (10-1, 7-1) … Road
    2. San Diego State (7-5, 6-2) … Road
    3. UNLV (7-5, 5-3) … Home
    4. San José State (6-6, 5-3) … Road
    5. Nevada (4-8, 3-5) … Home

any one know what happen to big Island footballer David Fangupo?

  109. NorthShoreFan December 1, 2013 9:15 pm

He be having brats and cheese instead of laulau and poi. Then again, Taro Brand get frozen poi now…

  110. NorthShoreFan December 1, 2013 9:16 pm

I tink he trying to qualify…not sure

  111. Derek December 1, 2013 9:25 pm

Ben Jay needs to find a 13th game, a home game, to take advantage of the Hawaii exemption. That means 8 home games and 5 road games, if possible. He should target a Big 12, Conference USA, or Big Ten school.

  112. NorthShoreFan December 1, 2013 9:35 pm

    So how was the luau?

  113. papajoe2 December 1, 2013 9:41 pm

111 Derek~ I was just going to ask about a 13th game. So I supposed their won’t be a 13 game. Probably could make a little more money here or take one of those body bag games on the road but, risk not getting into a bowl game with a loss.

  114. kev-1 December 1, 2013 9:43 pm

I want a 13th game too. But, would it be better financially if it was an away game? I don’t know much about how it works, but doesn’t the home team pay the visiting team for non-conference games?

  115. Moocher December 2, 2013 12:44 am

yep, need 13th home game…byu anyone, utah?

bottom feeder team from a bcs conference? Cal, TCU, Kansas, Purdue?

might be enticing for those teams to know if all goes to hell again next year at least they finish with a trip to hawaii

  116. wafan December 2, 2013 5:56 am

  118. Slugger December 2, 2013 7:27 am

    Good morning, gang!

Sean Schroeder improved his play this year from last season & I appreciate that. Standing in the pocket & getting hammered last season was not good for his body or the team. Congrats on the recognition & attaining your Masters, Sean! Go out & conquer the world.

Taylor Graham, get out there & work with your receivers in the off-season. The guys who introduced me to you were really excited that you were at UH. Be the future; be all that you can be (to steal a quote from our last opponent.)

Love the team! GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  119. tommui December 2, 2013 7:35 am

GOOD MORNING HAWAII and GOOD MORNING SLUGGER!

Congrats to the Volleyball Wahine! Dave, you do us proud!
    Great going Wahine Basketball team!
And of course to Coach Beeman!

And to the football team, THANK YOU!

  120. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 8:20 am

108.. I think he redshirted this year. He’ll be ready to rumble next season.

  121. jeezy33 December 2, 2013 8:25 am

    Fangupo grey shirted…..

    4 star alert!!!

  122. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 8:26 am

    Assuming he stays eligible.

  123. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 8:27 am

jeezy… 4 star alert meaning he could be a monster player in the future? or 4 star alert that he might not be eligible?

  124. Shoko December 2, 2013 8:31 am

Think he means four-star recruit on the radar.

  125. Shoko December 2, 2013 8:33 am

Just FYI, the cross-divisional teams that the Warriors will play next year will be the same. The schedule is based on a two-year rotation so next year will see the same cast of characters (Wyoming, Colorado State, and Utah State) with the exception of switching venues.

  126. (Jesse)James December 2, 2013 8:36 am

Well, now there is intermittent power outages in ST’s neck of the woods….Hmmmmmmm

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

  127. Bugaz December 2, 2013 8:38 am

What exactly is “on the radar”? Is it that we see that recruit in passing or does the recruit have the intention of landing here on our runway?

  128. jeezy33 December 2, 2013 8:39 am

If I’m thinking the same guy as ST is hinting, then would eligible after sitting out a redshirt year..

Curious to hear about the surprise return or 2 tho.

  129. jeezy33 December 2, 2013 8:40 am

whoops.. I meant sitting out transfer period…

  130. Bugaz December 2, 2013 8:41 am

I will be out there on the runway guiding in those four stars with my flashlights. Lol

  131. Shoko December 2, 2013 8:46 am

Boise State’s Chris Petersen has withdrawn from USC coaching search after mutual interest.
We all know when a coach says he’s not interested, its to be taken with a grain of salt….but maybe not in Petersen’s case. Seems pretty comfortable at BS?WHO?.

“Petersen’s contract at Boise State is extended by a year each time the Broncos win eight games. With the victory against New Mexico on Saturday, Petersen’s deal now runs through Jan. 31, 2019. Petersen is scheduled to be paid $2.098 million in 2014, plus a $250,000 annual payment for a licensing fee so the university can use his likeness.”

    Read more here: http://blogs.idahostatesman.com/reports-boise-states-petersen-no-longer-a-candidate-at-usc/#storylink=cpy

  132. 808WarriorFan December 2, 2013 8:47 am

Thom Kaumeyer has got to go…..our defensive schemes and tackling sucked !!!!!

  133. Shoko December 2, 2013 8:55 am

“There is only one coach in the Pac-12 who has never won 9 games or more in a season in his career. And USC is apparently going to hire him.”

    Meaning Washington’s Steve Sarkasian

Anyway, there are 77 bowl eligible teams and only 70 spots meaning 7 MWC teams may not all have a spot.

  134. NorthShoreFan December 2, 2013 8:58 am

    Guud Morning Tsaiko land….

Now the monku starts…DR, head cheerleader this morning. We need to make these “cheerleaders” a part of the selection committee. Won’t have no bs from them later since they make the selections. Have them make the deals and do the searches. Getting tired of wanna bes.

  135. Dan-O December 2, 2013 9:02 am

128….who we talking about? Spill da beans!

  136. boolakanaka December 2, 2013 9:10 am

Good luck to Kapoi, Wisconsin is a fantastic school from a great conference, so I can’t really blame him for his change of heart.

  137. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 9:13 am

    Shoko,

USC would be making a huge mistake if they went after Sark. They would be doing UW a favor by taking him away. My UW alumni friends have lost confidence Sark will get them over the hump.

  138. jeezy33 December 2, 2013 9:17 am

    136. It’s a blessing in disguise… He was offered before Naeole became OL coach. That offer turned into a grey shirt. I think you can put together where I’m going with it..

  139. Dan-O December 2, 2013 9:20 am

137…..its official, Sark’s now USC HC.

  140. Shoko December 2, 2013 9:26 am

    137. Already read a few announcements that Sark is the next USC football head coach.

  141. boolakanaka December 2, 2013 9:27 am

USC is a very difficult gig, with expectations as high as it can get at any BCS school. The real drawback is dealing with the alumni side of things, and it persuades many credible candidates to walk away. They are a profound pain in the okole, and can suck the life and joy out of the job.

A buddy of mine, who works from the sports agency/representation side, told me that both Gruden and Sumlin, walked away, among other reasons, because of the time suck required from the SC alumni. Also, as to Gruden, his reported pay with MNF is 4 million plus. Considering that he works 3-4 days a week, for about 18 weeks or so, it would take an awful lot for him to walk away from his current TV gig.

Side note, Del Rio is staying put, as there is an implicit promise he gets the Broncos gig when Foxy moves on…..hmmn, maybe Pat Hayden should get Larry Ginoza’s number??!

  142. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 9:35 am

136… Wisconsin churns out NFL linemen every year, so it’s pretty exciting if they come calling when you’re a OLine prospect.

Kapoi is probably 2-3 years from competing for a starting spot at Wisconsin if he progresses. So hopefully he’s ok with that. If not, UH will have no problems in accepting him back on a transfer.

Also, Gary Anderson hired Chad Kauha’aha’a for DLine coach. Kauha’aha’a was at Utah previously and got his coaching start at Baldwin HS. So expect to see Wisconsin dip into the local recruiting pool in the next few years. I’m sure Kauha’aha’a will be tapping into the Kamehameha player pipeline.

Other cool Kauha’aha’a factoid… His brother is UFC Ultimate Fighter Season 3 champion Kendall Grove.

  143. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 9:40 am

140… wow. Hope USC fans will be happy with 7-8 wins per year.

I give Sark 4 years until he’s gone.

  144. wasabi December 2, 2013 9:43 am

143…haha you are ok with norm chow’s average of two wins per year…

  145. boolakanaka December 2, 2013 9:45 am

Wisconsin, has a direct UTAH pipeline going, with two prime recruits already, scheduled for their 2014 and 2105 class: Ula Tolutau and Austin Kafentzis. My ex roomies son, I think, was the sophomore HS player of the year in the nation last year. UW’s oline coach is previously from Utah State.

  146. Slugger December 2, 2013 10:00 am

    Morning, tommui!

Imma gonna go outside while it’s 60 degrees & wash windows. That’s warm compared to the last coupla days.

Congrats to the Wahine in getting the 1st round NCAA WVB games here!

Looking forward to cheering on the MBB team on the 7th!

  147. Shoko December 2, 2013 10:17 am

MWC Commish Craig Thompson: In all reality one (MWC team) is not going to be playing in a bowl game.

    Which one?

MWC Commish Craig Thompson: The one that crushed any hopes for the conference to receive a share of the BCS money.

    San Jose State?

    MWC Commish Craig Thompson: Bingo!

  148. Marleysdad December 2, 2013 10:26 am

Had a great time at the Warrior luau last night. Thanks Steven for the contest! It was great to meet you, too bad there wasn’t more time to talk. I got to meet quite a bit of player & thank them for playing their hearts out. Regardless their W/L record, they never quit. You can’t ask for too much more.

Talked to Kwamane Bowens & reminded him of his tweet guaranteeing victory, he suggested he should do it more next season. We both laughed.

It’s good to end a season with a win……..any season.

  149. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 10:31 am

wasabi… different programs, different expectations. Sark was getting paid $2.25 million, UH is paying Chow with peanuts and gumballs.

Would you be happy if you paid a coach $2+ million per year and not contend for a single conference title?

SMU is getting grumpy that JJ hasn’t given them any conference titles with his $2 million salary. They are only 5-6 this year and will be underdogs to UCF and looking at a losing season. He’s built up some leeway by making SMU a viable program again, but that will go away quickly if they drop down a little.

UH has shown they aren’t willing to accept 6 wins with a $1.1 million contract. If Chow were getting paid higher, I’d be much more critical of him at this stage of his tenure, but in reality, he’s getting paid nothing for a HC.

  150. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 10:33 am

    147… ouch.

SJSU is getting punished for messing up the MW’s BCS money loss.

  151. jonj December 2, 2013 10:33 am

    FUHA
Sark is a prime example of good recruiting bad coaching! And they are from the same tree. Like I said before Mack got booted we are firing a coach that brings us 7-8 wins a year to hiring a coach that will bring the same. but I was wrong Chow brings us 1 win a year vs Div 1 teams.

  152. jonj December 2, 2013 10:34 am

FUHA chows getting paid $550,000 then we should atleast expect 3 wins a year

  153. jonj December 2, 2013 10:35 am

and then Chows teams bring in less revenue… so chow really costing us about 2 mill a year

  154. Former UH Athlete December 2, 2013 10:36 am

146… MBB has been fun to watch. Too bad their schedule stinks this year. No good teams coming to play at SSC this year, plus they have a real slow stretch this month until the DH Classic. Only 2 games in a 3 week span leading into the DH Classic.

  155. jonj December 2, 2013 10:41 am

    FUHA
Numbers don’t lie and you have no Numbers to back chow. Except the buyout which if we did it im sure he would take less lets say 1 mil over a 5 yr period. that’s doable to me! especially since we practically did it with chows OC

  156. jeezy33 December 2, 2013 10:48 am

My guess is Iowa ST and Boise St/St Marys will be ranked teams come DHC time.. Boise plays St Marys so one of those teams most likely be undefeated and will be ranked.
