Painting the town Green

Former UH running back Alex Green, the Green Bay Packers’ third-round draft choice this year, is one of 35 players invited to participate in this week’s NFL Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles.

Major corporate sponsors, including all of the trading-card companies, are involved in the event. There will be photo shoots — Green will be wearing his Packers’ No. 39 — and interview sessions with the sponsors and media.

Here’s a preseason prediction: Be wary of preseason predictions.

Among 13 publications in 2010, the preseason consensus was Alabama was No. 1.

Right state, wrong school. Here’s a sampling.

Phil Steele: 1) Oklahoma. 2) Ohio State. 3) Alabama. … 10) Oregon … 15) Auburn.

Sports Illustrated: 1) Alabama. 2) Ohio State. 3) USC. … 8) Oregon … unranked) Auburn.

The Sporting News: 1) Alabama. 2) Ohio State. 3) Boise State. … 11) Oregon. 17) Auburn.

And in the WAC for 2010, Phil Steele predicted UH would finish fifth, Sports Illustrated predicted a sixth-place tie, and The Sporting News predicted eighth.

Here’s the recap: 2010 predictions.

Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, running backs coach Brian Smith and defensive line coach Tony Tuioti are on the Mainland recruiting.

Please keep us up to date on his job search. I was thinking perhaps a cushy job as a department head in municipal government would be his forte.

There’s a 5-star safety from Sacramento named Shaquille Thompson. I’d say the Big Aristotle had quite an influence on a lot of parents.

Can’t wait for all of the Dwyane, LeBron and Zebo athletes.

    response to yesterdays post #12-

I’ve said all along Hawaii should use their geographic location to their advantage and market their unique ability to play a game deep into Saturday night. By this time Saturday, no other teams are playing across the nation. We’ve got the entire nation’s attention all to ourselves. All we’re competing against are reruns of the days game and informercials.

Now, with the advent of PAC10 teams moving their games to Sundays, surely other big conferences will follow suit. Why follow and fight for exposure with the bigger boys. Instead, I say stay put! We now become the leading game to all of these other games. You can’t ask for better exposure than that!

  45. madeinhawaii May 15, 2011 9:12 am

    Mr. Tsai- #25

This is for real. Sterling Silva has a brother names Hyland Ho Silva who once stole the mayor’s car for a joy ride. The Big Island press had a “field day” with this item especially when shortening the name Hyland. Another brother is named Quick. These are not nicknames.

  55. Hawaiianbod May 15, 2011 10:14 am

Happy birthday wishes to all of those born this month! Happy birthday, AVIS!!!

Congratulations to Rasu Begasu’s son! Wish I would have known sooner. I woulda looked for him if I knew his name, what he looked like, etc., etc., etc.

The first FB player I got to congratulate yesterday was Jake Heun. He’s now a “native son”. He thanked me by saying, “Thank you, Auntie!” You got it!

    Happy Sunday!

    Happy belated birthday to all.

  64. d1shima (Aria'd) May 15, 2011 10:34 am

Is there a pre-prediction preseason list?

  65. d1shima (Aria'd) May 15, 2011 10:35 am

    Hilo Moon,

    Funny story. 😆

  66. d1shima (Aria'd) May 15, 2011 10:40 am

Got my renewal form yesterday, too. Tryna decide whether to go back to South EZ from North last year.

We switched not realizing that the new video screen was coming.

Was it really worth it? What say you? Anyone?

  67. jm2375 May 15, 2011 10:41 am

BTW, I purchased a $30 gift certificate from choysueyboy’s shop for $15 yesterday. Check the SA website to see if it’s still available.

  68. Hawaiianbod May 15, 2011 10:46 am

played with a Link Aleaga (former Rainbow). His siblings were named Ink (UDub), and Ing (WSU). Sisters were Queena and Queene. The other brothers had regular names, Eddie and Vic.

  71. SteveM May 15, 2011 10:49 am

    Good morning everyone!

Some Tsai-ko birthdays coming up this month are Jason, d1shima, Peaches, and Brie.

At least I won’t get into trouble this year if I forget the day of d1’s birthday… 😐

    Hey, d1shima — need a karaoke birthday party? 😕

  72. d1shima (Aria'd) May 15, 2011 10:58 am

    SteveM,

Not for me but a KKall sometime this summer would be fun.

  73. SteveM May 15, 2011 11:08 am

    RE: #8

That’s true, Kekoa. But nobody wants to see me take off my shirt and stretch out with my Speedos (even if they’re only slippahs). The 1800 start time now makes my seats pretty good later in September after the road trip.

As for the 4:15 PM Sept 3 start — I’m not complaining. We’re getting plenty of ESPN $$$$ aren’t we? Right?

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid May 15, 2011 11:13 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Good for Green!

    Those predictions are predictable…

What’s in a name? Howzabout Beaudyboy Punahele?

  75. Shoko May 15, 2011 11:18 am

Don’t mind Speedos, but if one sports the G-string…I might have to keep my distance. 🙂

  76. Hilo Moon May 15, 2011 11:24 am

Again, this is for real. I just remembered that the Silvas — Sterling, Hy Ho, and Quick have a sister named Shanda, but evryone pronounces it Shyne-da.

  77. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2011 11:29 am

Actually, I’m still on vacation, but I forgot to schedule a host for today.

  78. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2011 11:35 am

    HawaiianBod:

    What’s Ben Gurr up to?

I recall he was a tough player.

  79. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2011 11:36 am

Watching this NBA game reminds me of the Butler-VCU matchup.

  80. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2011 11:36 am

Zebo is a battler. Imagine if actually tried to jump.

  81. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2011 11:45 am

Now I figured out why, after all these years, Kevin Durant had a familiar-sounding name. There used to be a basketball player named Devin Durrant.

  82. gmahoney May 15, 2011 11:56 am

D1, went to all the games in the North, despite not being able to see the new scoreboard, we liked the crowd. We once were given tickets right behind the Warrior bench, row 9 but the people were stuck up and not friendly like North End Zone. Heck, they don’t even wear Warrior Green. I am gonna get my season tickets in North End Zone Blue.

  83. GRM May 15, 2011 12:11 pm

Don’t forget P. Lau (Peter, Pat)

  84. d1shima May 15, 2011 12:20 pm

    gmahoney,

Heck, they don’t even wear Warrior Green.

I hope you were cordial to those folks despite their “reserved demeanor”…that sounds like the area where a lot of visiting recruits sit!

  85. gmahoney May 15, 2011 12:40 pm

d1, yes there were recruits in front of us, but I had the guy next to me ask if I had tickets for the seats we were sitting in, apparently his family has had the adjacent seats for many generations…The guy on the other side was reading a newspaper, acting bored, even when there were exciting plays. No one cheering, chanting and getting all nutz! Nope, to the North End Zone for me.

  86. BG May 15, 2011 1:25 pm

Howzit gang?!! I really knew a Sterling Silvers in Alaska!

ST’s parents missed a golden opportunity to name Stephen and Mike, “In” and “Out”

  87. Ralph May 15, 2011 1:26 pm

North endzone brown, I don’t miss the scoreboard. No rain or sun in the face. If you sit lower in the orange with Kazz you can see the twinkle of the rainbow dancers eyes.

  88. BG May 15, 2011 1:35 pm

#86 was the lead-in to the story about two little skunks name “In” and “Out” who lived with their mother in the forest. One day, In was tired of playing in the house and went out to explore. When it got near to dinner time, mommy skunk got a little worried and send Out out to find In with instructions to keep looking until Out found In. Lo and behold, in just a few minutes Out came in with In. Mommy skunk was ecstatic and praised Out’s outstanding job. She asked, “How did you find In so quickly?” Out matter-of-factly replied, “Easy, In-stinct”. 😀

Get it? Sound it out and remember they’re skunks! LOL

  89. hkwarrior (aka pcwarrior) because i moved May 15, 2011 1:45 pm

  90. Hawaiianbod May 15, 2011 2:21 pm

ST/hkwarrior – after high school, Ben Gurr went to Orange Coast College, but the finance fell through and he had to fly back home. Too bad because he was a good athlete, but we did have a great two weeks before he left the OC. 🙂

  123. Ralph May 15, 2011 4:37 pm

error, 5 teams from the Conference USA made it. The WAC RPI is just toooooo low.

  124. Ralph May 15, 2011 4:40 pm

Fresno State into the Washington Regional, Boise was not selected.

  125. papajoe2 May 15, 2011 4:41 pm

    papajoe2 us!

  133. gmahoney May 15, 2011 5:03 pm

Wow, way to send the seniors out, with a win!

  134. Ralph May 15, 2011 5:05 pm

That is what we have to strive for in all UH sports, be consistent participants in the NCAA regional, without our selection we can never battle for a national championship.

Look at Penn State, 27-22, hosting at that, and all year long only Michigan consistently ranked in the top 25 with Indiana earning a hand full of votes on occasion.

Boise and Hawaii records on paper equal to a few of those selected in the at large category where the Big 10, Big East and Conf. USA received multiple selections, but the WAC has such a low RPI rating that we are often overlooked. Next season, hopefully, Coolen can schedule a better field for our tournaments.

  135. gmahoney May 15, 2011 5:09 pm

    Wonderful BaseBOWS game!

  138. jm2375 May 15, 2011 5:23 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!!

Ralph – #134 – it’s not just UH’s scheduling. It’s the scheduling of some of the other WAC teams. Some teams are just too chicken (or maybe can’t) to schedule tough teams. Same with baseball, I hear Trap complaining about it all the time. UH can sweep a conference series and still have a lower RPI that week. That’s why the WAC is usually a 1 or 2 team bid conference. Trap can’t wait to get out of the WAC and into the Big West.

Congrats to the BaseBows!! Pulling it out in the last inning of the last home game, like you’ve done all season!!

Thanks to K5 for all the great memories.

  144. papajoe2 May 15, 2011 7:14 pm

#1134 Ralph. i was kind of hoping that because we made it the World Series last year and with our good won-lost record, they would select us, put us in a strange, tough regional and laugh at us. As long as we had a chance, anywhere would be fine. Yup. Gotta be consistent, then they will respect us. I think Fresno has been in every regional. They would have been chosen even if they didn’t make it to the championship game, just out of respect. Penn State making it, much less hosting, is absurd. I hope turns out like the Big 10 in football. Didn’t they lose all of their bowl games. I forget, maybe they won 1.

I invited Wyman and Liz to my home back in the 1980s. It was church-related and Wyman ended up playing his guitar and leading the singing in our group of 10-12 people.

Nice couple though he had some strange ideas about the new millenium coming up.

people who maliciously name their kids jacked up names should be arrested. For real! A person’s name is the foundation of their identity and duty– or so the Hawaiians believe at least. There was a kid I once taught whose name was ABCDE — pronounced absidee. Rumor has it that her sister’s name was Elemenopee — LMNOP. I am not making this up. Last I heard about abcde, she was a run away. Sad.

Speaking of names, it appears that we have tapered off from the madness of people naming their kids with a “den” at the end — Ayden, Rayden, Shayden, Kayden, Hayden. I mean, to each his own, but for some reason I have a hard time imagining 80 years from now when grandkids are looking for their tutu man kayden! Hawaii folks tend to like trends. When I was in high school, it seems like a bunch of folks named their boys brandon.

My pre-apologies to any Tsaikos named Ayden, Rayden, Shayden, Kayden or Hayden.

    BIK

  153. madeinhawaii May 15, 2011 9:02 pm

    al,

For as long as it makes UH stand out from the pack and gives us 10+ winning seasons regularly. If the RnS with the Kiko helps UH get players into the NFL, CFL, and UFL we should stick to it as a proven package. Don’t fix it, if it ain’t broke.

  154. Kazz May 15, 2011 9:25 pm

K5 was NEVER going to catch up to the way Oc16 was producing sporting events.

K-5 has been great to UH, but over the last 5 years, their coverage quality has topped off.

    MOVIN ON TO OCEANIC!!!

  155. madeinhawaii May 15, 2011 9:28 pm

How many more games on K5 or have we seen the last?

  156. tommui May 15, 2011 9:44 pm

AL: #150 I sort of rejoiced when Archie Kodros brought the single wing to Hawaii – remember that name? He only was here one season – I think somewhere around the time Jimmy Asato left and just before Coach Holmes took over.

Strange – I never saw his name mentioned in our football guide books – like he just dropped off the earth or something.

I don’t think that the single wing will ever come back again – maybe Kapernick (?) would have been a good tailback – but the only kicking ability he may have had was when he was complaining about the loss to Hawaii!

(Tailback in the single wing had to know how to run, pass and kick – when the quick kick was regarded as an offensive weapon).

  157. Kazz May 15, 2011 9:45 pm

    PAU.

  158. madeinhawaii May 15, 2011 9:52 pm

    tommui,

According to Wikipedia, In May 1951, Kodros was hired as the athletic director and head football coach of the University of Hawaii. He compiled a record of 4 wins and 7 losses at Hawaii. In February 1952, he announced his resignation from Hawaii, and in April 1952, he was hired by his former teammate, Forest Evashevski, who had been named head football coach at the University of Iowa. Kodros served as an assistant football coach at Iowa from 1952 through 1965. After which he retired from coaching and owned and operated the Hilltop Mobile Home Park in Iowa City, Iowa, with his wife.

  160. al May 15, 2011 10:04 pm

mih…as long as the braintrust keeps tweaking the r n s, i think it can be here for a long time. the few times that we were stopped cold or somewhat halted was when physical superiority took over the game. georgia for example.

i like what they did last year, setting the rb back two yards improved the run.

i like it when they go to a pitch-option offense inside the ten.

when david graves takes over the helm, he will provide an instant second option to the run game and that will cause major problems for defenses.

  161. al May 15, 2011 10:04 pm

archie kodros is a mystery to me.

    1952????

    much too early for me.

When The Former Coach came in his belief was that the RnS gives the local kids the best shot at being competitive with the teams in the then-WAC. A lot of those teams await the Warriors in the MWC.

I see no need to change philosophy anytime soon.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
