Colt injured in accident

Former UH quarterback Colt Brennan is in serious condition with a facial injury following a two-car accident on the Big Island this morning. Brennan was hospitalized in Kona, where he underwent tests for internal bleeding, and was set to be transported to The Queen’s Medical Center this afternoon.

Brennan was a passenger in the head-on crash.

* * * * *

It happens all of the time. A football team struggles offensively for most of the game. Then it goes into the two-minute offense. Bam. Bam. Bam. Touchdown. And everybody asks: Why couldn’t the team play that way the entire game?

And that’s the confounding thing about UH. The school that has the world’s best telescope and can clone a mouse gets ditched and disrespected time and time again. But backed into a corner, it can replace an AD, hire a coach in a week, and sweet-talk an invitation from a conference it has been pursuing for more than a decade.

Why can’t school officials operate this quickly and decisively all of the time? Only someone with an enigmatology degree knows the answer.  But we do know what an impending football membership in the MWC means.

Winners:

The Warriors. Sure, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State were intriguing. But the Warriors got the date they always wanted.

M.R.C. Greenwood. She knew what past UH presidents learned — UH football is important to the community.

Rockne Freitas. It’s no secret that Freitas’ clout, influence and contacts helped make it all happen. Now, if he can only help with the rail …

Non-winners:

WAC. Its future is in serious peril when the senior member decides it cannot stick around.

Karl Benson. He’s a decent, honest and loyal man. But to lose an ally, well, this time it’s personal.

San Jose State. It’s not easy being the only kid in class not invited to the party.

    Kudos to Jim Donovan!!!

Major Coup for UH, I hope every thing goes smoothly with finalizing. I’m excited about the Big West as well as I think that will help travel and will be at worst a lateral move competiton wise when you consider who is left in the new WAC.

Great job UH!! Now I don’t have to worry we’ll be I-AA any time soon!

  2. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 1:14 am

Nope, all is well in UH’s sports wrold.

Now, if it would only stop raining …

    ST –

Any word on TCU and what’s happening with the Big East?

I think if TCU stays in the MWC that the MWC still has an excellent chance of being evaluated as higher than the Big East to be a BCS conference. Couple that with the fact that for every other sport it’s not a good fit at all because of the distances for everyone! The Big East is a shambles in football. With TCU and Boise leading the MWC and Hawaii/Nevada/Fresno/Air Force providing a solid group of football programs and SDSU now on the rise the MWC is going to be a VERY competitive football conference.

  4. al November 19, 2010 1:31 am

Great to be in the MWC.

    But feel badly for our Warriors having to play at 7,200′ Laramie;

and at 5,000’+ in Ft Collins & Colo Springs.

Big West excellent fit for other sports.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

What an amazing turn of events. Guess since we’ll still be playing Nevada:

It has been 22,617 days since Nevada won a football game in Hawaii.

  9. ai-eee-soos November 19, 2010 1:50 am

    non-winner: Utah State.

Hope something good happens to them.

  10. Michigan Warrior November 19, 2010 2:05 am

And we just gotta kep on winning… in every sport!

We need to close out this season strong, and run through next season as the big bullies. Don’t take anyone lightly. We can now play for a bigger invite!!! It started last night!!!

    Go, Warriors!

    Go, Wahine!

    Go, ‘Bows!

I would have loved to see shorty’s face at reno when he heard the news that we where coming to MWC and he would get to come to the islands again. LOL I wonder if he is upset with his president.

  12. Pomai November 19, 2010 2:10 am

Now to see if our own shorty has the ala’s to do what he said or was it just blown smoke to get the vote>>>>>>>>>>

Looks like UH is going to become very familiar with Interstate-25 stretching from WY down to NM. Thank you, Mr. Donovan, for getting us future games in Fort Collins, CO, home of New Belgium Brewery!

  14. A-joe November 19, 2010 2:35 am

    The roller coaster ride continues…

    I’m not getting off.

  15. Pride. November 19, 2010 3:13 am

Okay, do we get to bring the Humanitarian and Hawaii bowls in to the MWC mix?

  16. bb November 19, 2010 3:14 am

    Another loser is Utah State.

They were invited to the prom but instead decided on good faith to stay home.

  17. wafan November 19, 2010 3:14 am

This is a very happy Aloha Friday.

    Whoo-hoo!

  18. wafan November 19, 2010 3:19 am

Wow. Rich and LV will be busy every other year. This is going to be fun!

Need to really consider going back to Boise (really reminded me of some parts of Spokane and the industrial areas of Tacoma).

  19. wafan November 19, 2010 3:21 am

Mid-range forecast is for a high next Wednesday of 30.

  20. expat November 19, 2010 3:44 am

I am not as concerned with Idaho, Utah State, and NMSU just because they are relative newcomers to the WAC although each embraced recruiting in Hawaii. In do feel bad for SJSU. I would think that the best thing for them to do is join the Big West and go Indy or drop down in FB, but who knows.

For them, Idaho, and Utah State there really aren’t any good FB conference option because of the geography. They have to hope that Benson can pull something out of his hat. Or somewhere else.

  21. protector November 19, 2010 3:54 am

    Yahoo! Christmas came early!

As for Benson, though he may be decent and honest, I don’t know if he’s always been so loyal to UH. I always feel he favored the BYUs and Boise States much more.

  22. NYUH November 19, 2010 4:03 am

Now the MWC should merge football with the WAC and take the WAC brand and create two divisions with C-USA taking La Tech and the Texas schools.

    The New WAC

    Pacific Division

    Fresno State

    Hawaii

    Idaho

    San Diego State

    San Jose State

    UNLV

    Utah State

    Mountain Division

    Air Force

    Boise State

    Colorado State

    New Mexico

    New Mexico State

    TCU

    Wyoming

  23. Garret November 19, 2010 4:08 am

Adding ANY other WAC school will kill the MWC’s chances of ever getting AQ status. The horrible computer rankings of the rest of the WAC (which I’ve been posting here every week) and the loss of the 12.5% bonus for having just 10 teams would kill the MWC’s chances.

  24. Garret November 19, 2010 4:08 am

Kudos to everyone involved who secured UH’s Athletic future!

  25. Garret November 19, 2010 4:10 am

Travel subsidies are needed from UH because UH has *no* choice but to fly across the ocean to play anyone…but every conference does not have to have members fly to Hawaii if they add someone else. Travel subsidies have been a done deal for years if UH wanted to go anywhere…that is just the price of Athletic survival for UH due to its geography.

  26. A-joe November 19, 2010 4:16 am

The WAC’s fall into extinction can be solely placed on the WAC’s board of directors. They should’ve at least helped Benson in his decision making. Or exercised their powers long ago and removed him. Instead, they all sat back and watched as everything fell apart.

  27. chopsueyboy November 19, 2010 4:21 am

Mahalo to UH for thinking about who the fans wish we compete against. Great way to start the weekend.

  28. oldie November 19, 2010 4:30 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Great job, Jim Donovan and everyone involved at UH.

Look at Jim’s track record so far:

    Dana Takahara-Dias

    Charlie Wade

    Gib Arnold

    MTW/BWC

    Go Warriors!

  29. Hawaiianbod November 19, 2010 4:33 am

  32. mctruck November 19, 2010 4:43 am

I wonder if there’s a chance for BYU to remain in the MWC for football only as in UH’s case????

  33. NYUH November 19, 2010 4:46 am

With UH’s stature, it should be in the Pac-1(2) but that is not going to happen so I was just having a little fun thinking about some way to avoid going into those mountains.

  34. mctruck November 19, 2010 4:46 am

When the dust settles….at least there’s more than good reason for UH’s fans to go to UNLV-land. It’s a win-win situation, or a win-lose situation if one hits the casino’s while cheering for UH football.

  35. mctruck November 19, 2010 4:49 am

Maybe with the great changes taking place in college football…the PAC12 will explore inviting other schools for football “only” inclussion?

  36. mctruck November 19, 2010 5:11 am

I’m glad UH continues to get national exposure this saturday on espn-gameplan. Doesn’t hurt at all.

    Keep it going, Warriors….win,win,win!!!

  37. gigi-hawaii November 19, 2010 5:22 am

Congrats Wahine and espt the Seniors who made and continue to make it happen!

Have a great day and weekend, every e!

    GO WARRIORS!

  40. rage777 November 19, 2010 5:50 am

    I got a question:

Did the MWC not want the other sports or did UH not want the other sports to be in the MWC? I don’t mind being in the Big West, but we are going lose some money because of basketball. Is the money saved in travel for the other teams more than the loss of money from basketball?

Wouldn’t another winner be the UH baseball and volleyball teams.

  41. Pomai November 19, 2010 5:51 am

Now for the important part – Garret what does this do with regards to TV $$$$ and will we still be able to view away games on Oceanic for free or will it be PPV?

  42. d1島 November 19, 2010 5:58 am

    Great Morning All!

Mahalo and Job Well Done to all the “behind-the-scenes Warriors!

  43. d1島 November 19, 2010 6:00 am

    Pomai,

I think Garret mentioned that right now MWC is on Versus which is part of a package on Oceanic and also on one or more of the satellite providers. He said that contract is expiring soon and was speculating about hoe ESPN may be interested now.

  44. d1島 November 19, 2010 6:04 am

Like JD said, their responsibility is to look out for what’s best for Univ. of Hawaii, not the WAC 5.

That said, I do feel for Na Keiki who are at those schools who had hopes of coming home to play in front of family and friends.

  45. d1島 November 19, 2010 6:06 am

    wafan,

I’ll take MRC at her word and am not gonna worry about the details.

  46. rage777 November 19, 2010 6:07 am

After reading the ESPN article, I wonder what two sports didn’t want to go to the Big West?

Athletic director Jim Donovan said his poll of the school’s 18 other teams indicated 16 of them would prefer to play in the Big West.

  47. d1島 November 19, 2010 6:08 am

I’m gonna take the weather dudes at their word as well and gonna grab my umbrella on the way out

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Not being privy to the strategic impact of the invitation and its acceptance, I hope that the UH leadership’s decision places us in a better situation than being adrift amid a sea of speculation. I am glad that the Olympic gold medal won’t be used to “flip the coin” to make that decision.

    Go Warriors! Beat SJS!

  56. rage777 November 19, 2010 6:19 am

jm2375, I don’t think it’s men’s volleyball. Didn’t one of the reports say that they want to form their own conference? Plus I think having UC Irvine, Cal Poly, etc would be good for them. It’s pretty much the MPSF anyway.

I think another loser would be BYU football. Since they have to play WAC schools, their rating will go down playing San Jose State, New Mexico State, etc.

  57. Ronnie November 19, 2010 6:20 am

So, am I the only one who feels like a WAC Stabber – only as it relates to Utah St. and San Jose St…

  58. Paco November 19, 2010 6:22 am

I’m more than a little shocked by this development. Very happy, but still shocked. But give credit where credit is due. Props to the President, Freitas, Donovan and the athletic department staff for pulling this off. A miracle indeed!

  59. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 19, 2010 6:29 am

Probably the only two programs that didnt think the Big West was a good fit for their program are the two MPSF programs in Warrior Volleyball and Rainbow Wahine Water Polo which I think is understandable.

  60. Old Diver November 19, 2010 6:31 am

It’s a great day to be a Warrior fan. Couple months ago we were wondering around in a cloud of doubt. Garret said we need to win now. Well we won on the field and that has cleared the fog. I can’t thank the members of the football team enough for giving it their all and securing the future of Warrior football. Mahalo and Go Warriors!

    http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x277053126/Rippon-explains-the-fine-points-of-the-run-and-shoot

“The run-and-shoot was based in Canada with Mouse Davis,” Rippon explained. “They were running to the side and shooting the ball all over the place. Then they created the one-back back there, which they called the ‘super back.’ They were the first people to put four wide receivers in the game, one back — the super back — and they shot the ball all over the place.

  62. LizKauai (iPad) November 19, 2010 6:42 am

the best thing about last night was seeing the UH Team together. Meaning the Prez, Chancellor, AD, HC and mention of Rockne Freitas and others. That kind of unity is what will guide UH through the storms through clear channels to safe harbors. There will be many more storefronts to come..

Mahalo, Ke Akua and Co Warriors!

  63. Kazz November 19, 2010 6:42 am

    I’m excited.

BUT…aren’t these the same people that put knives in our backs? Nevada? Fresno? and those remaining MWC schools that dumped on Hawaii years ago? They did it once and whats to stop it from happening again. Wasn’t it Mr. Blog Host that said that the remaining MWC schools each had fingerprints on the knife?

    I’m just thinking devils advocate.

The sun is shining brighter over Hawaii today. Good Job JD. The lineman gets it done in the trenches.

  67. LizKauai (iPad) November 19, 2010 6:47 am

bb- I think the knives we found in our back was more collateral damage than intentional stabbing. I could be wrong. I don’t think the move by UH was designed to stab SJSU in the back either.

  68. haawarrior November 19, 2010 6:50 am

bb-#65-I guess we just need to bring our football program to the point where we just beat their okole on a consistent basis.

  69. NYUH November 19, 2010 6:50 am

I second that Ronnie, but whose to say that carcass wasn’t already dead?

One good thing about this, IF it happens. Is that it will give the assistant coaches more motivation to stay around. Would like to see what Rolo can do with this offense over the next few years. Also assuming that Aranda will get over the Boise disaster and the D will continue to get better. Nice that Silva is tied for the national lead in interceptions!

So, am I the only one who feels like a WAC Stabber – only as it relates to Utah St. and San Jose St…

While we are about to do what Fresno State and Nevada did, the difference is the circumstance.

The WAC had an opportunity to become stable just prior to 08/18/2010. Things were originally in place and Hawaii, LaTech, Idaho, Utah State, SJSU, NMSU, Fresno State, and Nevada all had their hands in unison… only thing is FSU and UNR were biting their tongues…

After FSU and UNR ditched, further crippling the WAC, moreso than BSU leaving, then the gloves came off.

Many Hawaii, including myself, have said that if another school leaves, who can blame them? A lot of other WAC fans felt the same way.

    Things changed on 08/18/2010.

  75. papajoe2 November 19, 2010 7:02 am

Just thinking about Utah State’s previous invite to the MWC. Maybe they would have problems with the $5 mil buy out so they decided to stay in the WAC. Too bad for them, but maybe if they won more games, they would be considered again when the conferences continue to shift. San Jose State is having a hard time financially, so maybe they would drop football or go to Div. II. I sympathize with both schools, but each school has to look out for themselves. Just a short while ago, we were in the same, sinking boat.

  76. 99club November 19, 2010 7:05 am

Hmmm…I like our chances for winning the Big West automatic bid to the NCAA B-ball tourney down the road. Man, this day just keeps getting better.

  77. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 19, 2010 7:06 am

From a Fresno State Fan that operates a WAC Softball Blogsite:

In the rapidly changing world of conference expansion, it looks like Hawai’i will be the next team to depart the Western Athletic Conference. And the move could take place very quickly.

Hawai’i school officials announced late Thursday that the university is in discussions with the Mountain West Conference to join that league for football. UH would join the MWC in football only, and many have speculated that the school would move all of its other sports, including softball, to the Big West Conference.

The possible departure of Hawai’i from the WAC would create a major void in several sports, including softball. Coming on the heels of recent announcements by Fresno State, Nevada and Boise State that they too would be leaving the WAC, the league would almost instantly become a fraction of its former self. Fresno State and Hawai’i were the only WAC softball teams to finish ranked in the Top 50 of last season’s important Ratings Percentage Index. No other WAC softball team finished ranked in the Top 100.

While Fresno State has won 10 of the past 15 WAC softball championships, Hawai’i (with two) is the only other team in the league to win more than one. UH won its second WAC title in 2010, captured its first conference tournament championship, and reached the Women’s College World Series for the first time in school history.

If Hawai’i departs the WAC as expected, Louisiana Tech would become the only remaining team in the conference to have ever won a WAC softball title, having captured the league’s tourney championship in the 2008 season. That year, Tech finished the regular season in fourth place behind Hawai’i, Fresno State and Nevada.

Today’s announcement in Honolulu came exactly one week after Texas State and Texas-San Antonio accepted invitations to join the WAC in all sports, including softball, beginning in the 2012-13 season. Also accepting an invitation was Denver, which does not field a softball team. Hawai’i’s departure from the WAC could take place during the 2012-13 school year as well, though nothing is official at this point.

Hawai’i is the longest tenured school in WAC history, having participated in the league for 32 years. When Fresno State departs, the Bulldogs will have spent 20 years in the league, second most in league history. Hawai’i would represent the 17th different school to exit the WAC during the tenure of conference commissioner Karl Benson.

  78. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:07 am

For those who want the Warriors to be in an uprgraded football conference, the MWC is the place to go. But it’s not going to be easier. UH will be playing in altitude (Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming, Boise State, Nevada, UNLV), traveling to tough-to-reach places (Wyoming, New Mexico), and facing low-blocking teams (Air Force, TCU).

    Greater risks, greater rewards.

If the Warriors win, the outcomes will be so much more meaningful. But it will be much more difficult to win.

  79. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 19, 2010 7:09 am

***Notice how this FSU softball fan ignores UH’s 2007 WAC regular season championship. That year Fresno State won the WAC tournament, but was overstepped by the Wahine who upset UCLA in their own regional and marched all the way to the super regionals against the Lady Vols.***

  80. NYUH November 19, 2010 7:09 am

Thanks Support, I’m listening to it now.

  81. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:10 am

It also will be kind of odd/funny to stay in a MWC city (Vegas) for a week on those double road trips.

Then again, UH doesn’t get into the MWC without UNLV’s help.

  82. Kazz November 19, 2010 7:10 am

    ST,

Am I being paranoid because it appears the Big West deal is a little more incomplete than the MWC deal for football?

  83. Kazz November 19, 2010 7:12 am

I just remember running into Jim Donovan on the home opener for Wahine volleyball this season and joking with him. I asked him if he’s been able to get some sleep and he smiled without hesitation and said:

    We’ll be ok.

  84. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:13 am

    Re: MWC/non-football teams

UH didn’t ask because, it appears, it had set it sights on the Big West.

Then again, at the news conference, it looked like three of the five people on the podium were stunned to learn about the invitation. Nobody had any answers.

  85. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:16 am

    Kazz:

I have absolutely no doubt the non-football teams will end up in the Big West.

But as of right now, at this very moment, it is far, far from a done deal. There are a lot more procedures that need to occur.

  86. Jon November 19, 2010 7:20 am

To anyone concerned about the Big West offer coming, two things:

1-They didn’t lift the moratorium for nothing.

2-UH’s non-football sports programs are VERY attractive to the Big West.

I’m excited about it and think this is just as big an upgrade for the non-football sports as it is for football. Remember, the WAC of 2012 will look nothing like what we have this year.

  87. Not an Expert November 19, 2010 7:24 am

One positive about Benson is that he was good in bringing schools into the conference but did a terrible job in keeping them. He had the opportunity to have made the WAC a top conference and he failed.

  88. Kazz November 19, 2010 7:24 am

    ST and Jon,

Thanks. Maybe I, and MANY of us, have been so emotionally drained over the last three months that now we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel, we just wanna put the pedal to the metal and get into the sunlight ASAP.

What the heck… Three months of agony and uncertainty… I think I can live through a few more days or weeks of crossing the “T’s” and dotting the “I’s”.

  90. Pomai November 19, 2010 7:27 am

I kind of feel for the remaining WAC5 but agree we need to look out for ourselves, also they are not burdened by 2551 miles of water between them and their closest opponent.

  91. Pomai November 19, 2010 7:29 am

So did JD have anything to say that he hasn’t already???

  92. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:39 am

It wasn’t Benson’s fault that the schools left.

It’s the presidents who make the decisions.

Year after year, Benson told members to sign loyalty pledges. Nobody, not even UH would sign it. Then Fresno proposes it, backs out, and doesn’t want to pay the penalty it initiated.

Benson told members to upgrade their schedules, don’t play the I-AAs. Nobody listens.

UH had a terrible schedule in 2007. So Benson massages it so that the Warriors’ toughest games — Nevada, Boise State — are placed at the end, creating build-up drama.

After UH complained that it had nowhere to go in 2001, he helped create the Hawaii Bowl.

He’s like Billy Bean. He finds teams — Boise, Nevada, etc. — but then other conferences poach them. Whatcha gonna do?

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid November 19, 2010 7:42 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

How are you Mr. Tsai? What does it feel like, going from the “Dean of the WAC sportswriters” to the “Rookie in the MWC” ? 😆

  94. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 7:42 am

Imagine if the MWC took 12 teams, including Hawaii, in 1999. It would be an AQ conference now, and, Boise State might not be today’s Boise State.

    good alojah friday to all

kudos to all involved with the UH upgrade (fingers crossed on BWC). definite plus on all levels. always felt UH needed to look after itself since all the happening this passed 3 months.

like everyone feel for a few still in the WAC but hope they can pull together or end up with some deals and be better off.

  109. Michigan Warrior November 19, 2010 8:59 am

All I can say is… Mahalo to our boyz for owning most of the fields they’ve played on this year. If it wasn’t for them and our coaches, we wouldn’t be in the position we are in right now. Remember, we were slated to finish 7th! If we performed to the expectations of the experts, we’d still be stuck in the WAC, while Utah State might’ve been the one invited.

With that being said… Let’s go, Warriors! Win out the rest of this season and pound whomever we face in the Hawaii Bowl! Then open strong next year and don’t let up until the final whistle!!!

  110. Souljah November 19, 2010 9:00 am

I think the WAC has no choice but to invite/go after hard: Montana and Montana St.

That is if they want to survive…

  111. Shoko November 19, 2010 9:02 am

    Morning folks!

The future of UH sports is looking promising. Will be interesting to know what the terms of the invitation are in the coming days or, more than likely, weeks.

In regards to Benson, two traits that are important in being a good leader is being able to inspire and persuade its members. Obviously, these are traits Benson didn’t possess.

  112. Bulla November 19, 2010 9:17 am

Feeling sorry for Utah State, whew, what a bachi to say the least.

BIG BIG CONGRATS TO THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE MWC HAPPEN.

Now UH can get on to some recruiting, it has been way too quiet for too too long. hope and pray that coach lumpkin has things cooking on the back burners or we’ll be missing the boat.

Also what does this do to our out of conference games already scheduled?

  117. Moocher November 19, 2010 9:34 am

    Congrats UH

Gotta say congrats to the coach and players from the football program. If they had lost to fresno and nevada, i really do not think they would get the invite.

The other thing is that nevada will have a down year next year and UH will be fully loaded. Combine a fully loaded team next year and what they are doing this year and yeah, it’s been said before-winning cures everything.

if tcu stays, i would think it would make sense to try and bring in either a houston or smu for both a traveling partner, tv market, and making an even number of teams.

if that happens, may as well a few more teams for rivalries and a super conference.

    SDSU-Fresno- from cali

    TCU-Houston from texas

    Colorado State-Air Force from colorado

    UNLV -Nevada from nevada

    boise-daho from idaho

    NM-NMSU from new mexico

    wyoming-montana (would’ve been nice)

    SJSU-UC Davis another cali rivalry

    texas state-UTSA (texas newcomers)

hawaii-utah state? not really rivals but the only ones left

would be a great rivalry conference with 20 teams. wac and mwc could join at the hip and create a east west or mauka makai conference with benson taking half and thompson taking the other half. but you still need 1 guy in charge- i heard herman frasier is looking for a job, maybe he could lead the super conference. nah, but gangee, they may as well do something like this because the writing is on the wall-the super conferences are coming and you best be in a position to weather the storm or in fact create some lightning yourself.

  118. Stephen Tsai November 19, 2010 9:34 am

Again two important words about the UH news: Casino cities.

  119. labrat November 19, 2010 9:49 am

I would like to thank Neal Smatresk for his assistance. I have allways felt that UH would have needed someone on the inside to make this happen. Now we just need to close the deal.

  120. Kazz November 19, 2010 9:51 am

    Just for fun:

With UH completely out of the WAC, wouldn’t it make the WAC more appealing for smaller schools looking to make a jump to the FBS level???

Just thinking for fun. Benson has been quiet. Yes, it’s not OFFICIAL yet, but just saying… Benson had to have known about UH talking to the MWC and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he possibly threw in some sort of endorsement to assist UH.

Again, UH would have been the PROMINENT school in the new 2012 WAC, but would have been a financial burden for the other schools. So what can one do? For Benson, I’d imagine he’d want to keep his conference alive and to do that I can imagine the other schools would prefer less travel constraints and again with UH out of the picture rebuilding the WAC with smaller schools with less resources was his only chance.

I don’t buy into the whole thing about UH making a statement to Benson by telling the fans first before the WAC commish.

I think Benson knew. I think Benson helped in SOME capacity to assist UH getting to the MWC and I think Benson gambled to save his conference.

  121. Hank November 19, 2010 9:57 am

#78…ST…true, but they gotta come to the Rock…and they ain’t looking forward to that either.

  125. wowlaulau November 19, 2010 10:06 am

why only the football to the MWC? I would think that all the sports that the conference participates in be in one conference. Can anyone explain why this arrrangement? Is the answer as simple as that the invitation was only extended for football? Also does this arrangement means that in the future perhaps all sports will be invited into the MWC?

  126. WarriorMojo November 19, 2010 10:08 am

I don’t know if I agree with all of Kazz’s speculation in #120, but I would think Benson is on the phone to Montana and Northern Texas right now. “See! See! Now you don’t have to send your teams out there!”

And suddenly poor San Jose is the new LaTech, stuck in the middle of nowhere.

  127. Hank November 19, 2010 10:15 am

#125…wowlaulau…money…the nonfootball programs would have travel expenses (to Hawaii) that the MWC would not accept.

I like the Big West better for the nonfootball programs for a variety of reasons…but mainly because i think it would save UH money as well, and help recruiting in talent rich Cali.

  130. Kazz November 19, 2010 10:20 am

Regardless of opinions, the UH “brass” really stepped up on essentially the biggest stage at a time that was so critical it’s amazing.

Donovan to Hinshaw to President Greenwood, to the Board of Regents.

After years of dismay. It really looks like a complete 180. With an athletic director that is truly GREEN and WHITE and a chancellor that “gets it”, and as ST mentions, a UH president that understands what past UH presidents learned, it’s surreal.

    Almost speechless.

  131. SailorBlue November 19, 2010 10:21 am

Just wanted to pass on kudos to a number of folks and groups from last night’s Wahine VB games. During the Senior Recognition activities, UH gave a nice big lei to the lone Idaho senior who played in her last regular season game. Then the who Idaho team and staff stayed for all the UH activities. The crowd showed thier appreciation with loud and sustained applause for the respect shown to our Wahine by Idado. It was extremely classy on the part of both programs and was a direct reflection on the teaching by a couple of great coaches.

Then it go really loud for Dani and Liz…

    Great job to everybody.

  132. Derek November 19, 2010 10:23 am

Patience has been rewarded. While exploring all of our options, UH was being quiet, but being proactive in listening and talking to other people and other conferences. I had said in earlier blog posts that Hawaii will be in a better place. One, the football team showed that it is better than Fresno St. and Nevada, two of the renegade WAC teams. That is huge and don’t think it isn’t. It shows that Hawaii football is a very good product and that 2009 was just one down year. The bowl tie in and the Hawaii exemption is also a selling point along with the ESPN selling point of the last game of the today. And, trying to go in the Big West is also a win-win situation. All in all it is probably one of the greatest day in UH sports history to this point. And I think the recruiting will be huge now that the coaches can sell prospects where they are going and what they can expect to compete in.

Also, it will help markets like Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaii already has connections to Vegas and San Diego. They can increase flights to those places. And, they need to workin in scheduling direct flights to Reno. They can also look to getting a direct flight to Denver.

I still think TCU will leave the MWC to go to the Big 12 if they are invited. I don’t think they will go to the Big East because the AD had already said they wanted to have all of their programs be in the same conference and the Big East only wanted TCU for football. But, if TCU leaves that leaves the door for maybe teams like Utah State to be also invited to the MWC. Unfortunately, I don’t know if San Jose St. would be invited.

  133. tommui November 19, 2010 10:28 am

Interesting read on the Bleacher Report

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/522248-hawaii-warriors-to-join-mountain-west-what-move-is-next#page/1

Discuss what he thinks will happen in the MWC – does not think TCU will go to the Big East and what other teams would fit into the MWC if you need a 12th team.

  134. labrat November 19, 2010 10:31 am

The game being played on Wrigley field should be interesting. Just heard that for safety reasons every time a teams offense is on the field they will switch sides so that it goes in one direction. Away from the endzone where the goal post is in the stands.

Check out the video of Wrigley being prepared for the game. Looks dangerous to me.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ncf/news/story?id=5811007

  135. Derek November 19, 2010 10:34 am

Not to down play it, but Hawaii football fans and a lot of Hawaii people like to gamble. They have every excuse to go to a UH football road game and also take in casinos. This would be a huge boost for Las Vegas, Reno, San Diego (they have casinos too), they have casinos in parts of Colorado too where Colorado St. and Air Force are. I don’t know if they have casinos in New Mexico, Laramie, Fresno, or Boise.

  136. rage777 November 19, 2010 10:35 am

I hope UH doesn’t take our remaining WAC games lightly. Now that we are part of the defectors, the remaining WAC teams will want to whip our okoleles.

WAC makes counter offer to Hawaii

    By Ferd Lewis

    POSTED: 10:53 a.m. HST, Nov 19, 2010

The Western Athletic Conference has countered the Mountain West’s negotiations with the University of Hawaii and offered the Warriors a football-only membership, WAC commissioner Karl Benson said today.

Benson said the offer was made to both Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and athletic director Jim Donovan.

There was no immediate comment from UH.

“The WAC has informed (Hinshaw and Donovan) that if Hawaii wants to be a football-only member of the WAC, that we are ready and willing to accept Hawaii as a football-only member,” Benson told the Star-Advertiser.

UH announced last night it is negotiating with the Mountain West to join the conference as a football-only member while placing its other sports in the Big West.

The move, when approved, would end a 32-year association with the WAC where UH is the longest current member.

If Jim Donovan continues to be as successful as he is and continues to make magic happen, I’ll vote for him if he runs for President of the United States in the future. A former Warrior who bleeds green, and a skilled administrator, we are lucky to have him. And thanks also to Rockne Freitas, a gifted negotiator. And the rest of the crew who helped make this happen. Now these are the people who created the MWC and broke away from the WAC leaving Hawaii at the alter but they did it for business reasons and I don’t take it personally. It’ great to have Boise, they would make any conference look good. With Utah gone, and

TCU most likely leaving, Boise will help keep the MWC in the news. UNLV I think also helped make our membership happen. After all, Las Vegas is often called the 9th Island of Hawaii. Jim Donovan can make friends with anybody and if old bitteness still remains with the break away colleges in 1999, he can patch things up. I would not put it past him to talk June Jones into coming back. Not saying I want Greg McMacken replaced. I just hope the MWC is making a honest offer and not have somethin up their sleeves.

If I am correct, something doesn’t make sense…

Futhermore, how the HECK could this not have been offered to UH by the WAC in the first place????

How many were surprised, as Mrs A-House and I were, at the behind scenes and support of Pres Greenwood and the Board of Regents to make the possible move to the MWC?

OK, al and homey, you too – be honest now!!!!!!!

  157. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 11:10 am

Key is making sure our other sports get into the Big West. I can see our Basketball, Wahine Volleyball, Softball, and Baseball teams being the beasts in that league. If the BB teams can make it to the dance through the BigWest, fine. Recruiting Cal will become a lot easier.

  161. A-House November 19, 2010 11:12 am

Paper says that Pres Greenwood was the catalyst in making this happen as she spoke with each school Pres and explained the positives UH brings to the conference.

Perhpas, if UH wins out and the bowl, BSU goes undefeated, and Reno loses to BSU. BUT, all 3 are ranked in the top 25 at years end. How important is this to the MWC who may have only TCU ranked in the top 25? Can we say leverage?

“Benson said the offer was made to both Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and athletic director Jim Donovan.”

I wonder why he didn’t ask Kazz?

  167. RupertDaStupert November 19, 2010 11:18 am

Sorry to hear about Colt Brennan. He had some law problems but changed into a model citizen. I hope he recovers soon. It’s a crime non of the NFL teams gives him an honest chance at quarterback. No one throws 58 touchdowns in a season. Notre Dame or USC couldn’t do it even playing an all High School schedule. That’s why I miss June Jones so much. A compassionate man who believes in giving second chances. Pisa Tinoisamoa, Devone Bess, Colt Brennan.

  168. Markazulu November 19, 2010 11:21 am

Damn sorry to hear about Colt Brennan! I hope it aint serious!

  169. Kazz November 19, 2010 11:22 am

    A-House,

Well, I’d raise my hand but not all the way.

Essentially they HAVE to be behind UH athletics, but the effort varies as we have seen in past administrations.

Shows EXACTLY how much people know when they are not involved with the process.

I think we can all be humbled with a smile.

  170. mo808 November 19, 2010 11:23 am

Glad for the great news UH FB moving to the MWC! My congratulations to the movers and shakers who’ve made this possible! Go Warriors! Yeehah!

Sorry to hear about Colt’s injury! Prayers for a speedy recovery, Colt!

  171. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2010 11:23 am

I’m glad to see the WAC counteroffer because it gives UH a better fallback option than staying in the WAC for all sports if the MWC has a last-minute change of heart. The risk of the MWC backing out on taking UH in football may be small, but until the deal is really done, IN WRITING, the risk is there. It’s good to know that in that scenario, UH could still put its non-football sports in the Big West and have a home for the football team.

  172. chawan_cut November 19, 2010 11:29 am

prayers to colt and the other individuals involved in the accident.

  173. bb November 19, 2010 11:30 am

    Devils advocate again…

We all support colt and want him to succeed. The news clip mentioned a back injury. I hope that this “back injury” doesn’t get blown up by all the potential publicity. It could be a little scrape but the way the article makes it seem its a lot worse…

Maybe the UH could ask for travel subsidies from our Commish. We could also ask for some Costco hotdogs as well to sweeten the deal for us.

  174. Warrior Dave November 19, 2010 11:32 am

Get well Colt!!! Your fans in Hawaii are rooting for a complete and speedy recovery.

The Dolphins could sure use your talents now!

  175. chawan_cut November 19, 2010 11:35 am

notice how the wac proposed a counter-offer to us this time unlike the legal action it took against the other 2? sure its a little different circumstance with the penalty fee, etc, but maybe they think they have a better chance of being nice nice to us rather than benson bashing us in a news conference?

i’m kinda torn, since we’re all a little hypocritical at this point. we were on the other side of the fence lookin at the cool pool party going on next door. i was bitter and hurt. (you should see the espn sign i made with a-joe’s help) now that we’re the last one invited to jump into the pool, do we look back at the others peering over the fence and thru the knot holes desiring like we once did? or do we dive head first with a giant power bomb screaming Yay, I belong!!!!

  176. Jimmy D November 19, 2010 11:40 am

UH will pretend to consider counter offer from Mr. Peanut but will ignore it in the end.

MWC and Big West deal too far down the road.

MWC and UH should wrap this up as soon as possible and send the WAC a message, bang, bang you’re dead.

  177. Pomai November 19, 2010 11:46 am

I still have the feeling that the MWC comish is out to destroy the WAC, he has said that there is room for only one conference in the west. Would he have delusion’s of a MWC & PAC12 merge???????

  178. Kazz November 19, 2010 11:47 am

    No rest for the insane.

If we are going to poll people, how many think UH would SERIOUSLY consider this deal with the WAC?

I mean the WAC probably isn’t going to ask for travel subsidies, but then with the incurred cost of travel to farther reaching Texas locations for football will be it be a wash to match the cost of subsidies to the MWC???

DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE LIFELINE IS OPEN AND WILL NOT OPEN AGAIN!!!!!!!!! DECLINE THE OFFER FROM BENSON TODAY!!!!!!!!

  179. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 11:55 am

Had Montana accepted the WAC offer, I may have had reservations about this..but the WAC was on shaky grounds even with Hawaii in it. At any time La Tech could have flown the coup… and the WAC was travelling further East. Without Hawaii, it can go even further East, now.

  180. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 11:55 am

They can be the West-Atlantic Conference

  181. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2010 12:01 pm

I doubt that the WAC will die. It may not continue on as an FBS football conference, since that requires eight full members that play FBS football, and the WAC appears to have run out of options for adding an eighth football-playing member. However, so long as the WAC has at least seven full members, it can still carry on as a non-football division 1 conference (with the members that do play football continuing to do so as FBS or FCS independents). And the WAC should have no problem keeping its membership at or above seven, even if it loses another school or two, because there are still some Division 1 non-football schools inside the conference footprint that would join the WAC in a heartbeat.

  182. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 12:09 pm

I dunno, I think without Hawaii, the WAC can entreat schools further East. More in Louisiana… go north from there…

  183. dcwarrior November 19, 2010 12:09 pm

it’s funny though, I’m glad Greenwood stepped up to the plate – but where was she before this? And recall that it took a desperate MWC thinking it might lose TCU to agree to this – and that UH was 4th in line.

This is good for UH but let’s not kid ourselves that this was some sort of plan by the Upper Campus.

  184. Slugger November 19, 2010 12:12 pm

Hope Colt is ok. The breaking news article says he hurt his back. Not good news.

  185. Cheyah! November 19, 2010 12:12 pm

Great job by everyone involved in UH getting invited to the MWC especially to Mack and the boys!

Shouldn’t Colt be in the mainland trying to get on some of these teams with horrible QB’s? Speedy recovery and hope it ain’t serious!

    Go Warriors!

  186. Souljah November 19, 2010 12:13 pm

    Anybody see this…

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings/conference

The WAC is the 5th best conference, in the AP, but 7th!!! in the computer rankings, why?

A couple of main problems with the current system is that the same teams get preseason ranked high for no reason and the computer rankings are horribly biased. All teams should keep the ranking they have at the end of the previous season. The computer formulas should be given out publicly and explained in plain “high-school level” english so that everyone can understand how twisted the system is in a very non-abstract way.

  187. Shoko November 19, 2010 12:15 pm

Best wishes to Colt and a speedy recovery. Dang, hate to hear about this kind of stuff!

  188. Shoko November 19, 2010 12:22 pm

Is it me or is Benson even more of an idiot. Of course he would agree to take UH as a football only school. He doesn’t have to worry about the travel cost of the other non-football sports. Desperation attempt again.

  189. Jimmy D November 19, 2010 12:23 pm

There is no need to say anything to Benson other than we will continue to explore all of our options and will do what is right for us.I think the term is put him on ice.

UH surly put in a lot of thought into going public last night. In all honesty I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the negotiations with the MWC are a lot further down the road than they are telling us.

  190. Jon November 19, 2010 12:23 pm

    From AOL Fanhouse http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/11/19/wac-waits-on-hawaii/

Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson called Benson this morning to make him aware of the Mountain West’s plans.

“Craig informed me today that all they have done is a phone call or ‘Are you interested?’ and that it may take 30-plus days for the Mountain West to evaluate it,” Benson said. “Until the television deal is completed, nothing is going to happen. The WAC has informed Hawaii that if it wants to be a football-only member in the WAC and take their other sports to the Big West, the WAC is willing to accept Hawaii as a football-only member.”

When asked how Hawaii received the WAC’s news, Benson said: “They recognized it, acknowledged, appreciated it. I guess the fact that they don’t have an invitation and may not have one and whether that affects their decision-making process is unknown.”

I hope the powers that be at UH can count on the MWC offer as solid because this doesn’t appear that anything is even close to a done deal…

Garrett has been pretty quiet. I feel bad that he spent so much time writing that thesis with all of that number crunching and conference combining. People were praising him and even asking him to be the new commish.

Dude, wouldn’t you rather do other things with your life? I told you that the landscape of college athletics is fluid and ever changing. Clearly things were/ARE being done behind the scenes and the end result has nothing to do with your numbers.

I applaud your effort and people will once again knock me for knocking you but essentially you should have put your post and grouped it with your useless ones.

Instead make an extended post on how to make a juicy turkey or pumpkin pie.

  195. Moolelo November 19, 2010 12:36 pm

I don’t understand Benson’s offer — he’s just offering the same deal the MWC is offering, only with lower profile schools; it doesn’t require even a second of consideration. At a minimum, he should have proposed a football-basketball combo and played up the Big West’s weakness in men’s hoops. Our reaction to such a proposal would have been the same — a big “No, Thanks!” — and I’m sure that it wouldn’t have been acceptable to the Big West, but I would have at least run it through my head for a couple of seconds before laughing out loud.

  200. Ronnie November 19, 2010 12:51 pm

    Jon –

Interesting quote from the story you posted from AOL Fanhouse http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/11/19/wac-waits-on-hawaii/

“Right now, there’s no backup plan,” Benson said. “Our first line of defense is to convince Hawaii to stay in the WAC. That’s our backup plan right now.”

Compare that to what he said in the article on cbssports.com

    http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/25926271

However, the WAC is not done adding members, Benson said. Montana and Cal-Davis have been mentioned as possible WAC additions.

“Our plan today is to get back to eight football-playing members,” Benson said. “That still will be our goal.”

  201. CromabUSA November 19, 2010 12:55 pm

madeinhawaii, you just validated my points. If he is working on a project that could end up saving countless of lives for our military, country and around the world then what is he doing spending countless hours putting together a proposal for the WAC and UH? If the President of the United states was spending hours trying to figure out who he is going to start at WR and his FLEX position on his fantasy football team then I guess everything is okay right???

some people just need to be fans instead of Jesus, RONNIE i mean DUDE!

In any case… the WAC can survive… they will not be NCAA March Madness automatic qualifiers for the next 5 years, but they can get invites. There is still the NIT… AND… most of the teams remaining don’t see themselves as immediate qualifiers, anyway. 5 years is a good time frame. The WAC can still make a go at it.

  228. Not an Expert November 19, 2010 1:56 pm

Spending time blogging can be considered many things. Example a way to express, a hobby, waste of time, intellectual expansion of ones views from reading others. It’s countless.

There are some bloggers who like to justify their own beliefs by ridicuing others or negating others points of view. Usually they do this for self preservation and to make themselves feel better. People who make others wrong or look down on people need to take inventory of their exsistence and perspective. The world does not spin around you. Get that you are 1 of billions on this planet.

However everyone is important to someone or something and its really about others and not me, me, or I, I. Negative or positive is a choice also everyone can make.

Bottom line everyone has a choice in what they do in their lives and how much time they spend on this blog or any blog.

I hope they sort the rumor from fact soon. Hawaii News Now currently reporting based on unnamed sources that Colt suffered “brain” injuries as well as back injuries.

I see that FJ Cruiser on the road, presumably the “Toyota SUV” involved in the accident, and it just raises more and more questions about what the heck happened.

  245. BowsForever November 19, 2010 2:22 pm

Clarification: Hawaii News Now has a “scene of the accident” photo up. No sign of the Saab Sedan that reportedly rolled over and caught fire.

  246. Not an Expert November 19, 2010 2:24 pm

The Pac-12 should rescind their offer to Utah because having 2 AQ conference in the western United States will give the west more leverage and negotiaing power against the conferences east of Colorado. The Pac-12 will only benefit if this happens. You are not competing only with these schools in the west but also your eastern coharts.

Thompson a visionist and wheeler deeler should do whatever he can to keep Utah and TCU while getting BYU to return. This will automatically make the MWC AQ, and have them leap over the Big East and ACC in football.

The west wants more money and clout do things to have more schools be part of the BCS in the western United States.

“For me, in order to support something like that, I need to be assured it’s plus-plus, that it adds to our TV revenues and it’s more than what we share right now,” Sterk said. “Does it help us leverage a better (TV) agreement? Are there ways to mitigate the Hawaii travel? Does that (potential) 12th member with a championship game add value enough to make it worthwhile? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before we would go forward.”

Shows that Hawaii needs to take a shower, put on its best suit, wear its $200 cologne, and get its shoes shined when having discussions….This could still go south……lets hope Hawaii is in discussion with ESPN about getting them to support the move.

  251. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 2:44 pm

I think that the MWC also wants to go to 12 teams. So while Garret may have suggested that one of the best ways we get admission to MWC is for TCU to skadoo, the ideal situation MWC might be looking for is for TCU to stay put with Hawaii as an addition.

  252. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 2:50 pm

From ESPN speaking of Hawaii + TCU in the MWC

“If TCU decides to stay, then adding Hawaii means strengthening the league. It also could mean adding one more member so the league can get to 12 teams and add a conference title game. Hawaii is one of four non-AQ schools that has made a BCS bowl game. When Utah leaves for the Pac-12, the Mountain West would have those three other schools in its grasp (TCU and Boise State being the others) should TCU decide to stay.”

Da kine say get chance, we go. Dem like us stay, we still go.

    So…

    WHEA DA EFF WE STAY?????????????????????

  255. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 3:21 pm

    Kazz,

    Who’s on 2nd?

I think MWC truly wants us so long we accept their conditions. Ball is NOT in Hawaii’s court to get what we want. It’s going to be more 1-sided negotiations I think…the travel subs are not going to be negotiated, but expected, football only is not for discussion, i think things like how much TV money we will get and the sharing of money will be the only things we can chat about….

  256. Mad Dog November 19, 2010 3:33 pm

It has certainly been an emotional ride these past 24 hours. The euphoria of Hawaii joining the MWC and the BWC is tempered by the shocking injury to Colt. Prayers and best wishes to Colt and the others involved in the crash.

  257. NorthShoreFan November 19, 2010 3:34 pm

    HOOOOOO!…what a day!?!?!

  264. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2010 4:03 pm

It sure doesn’t sound like that SDSU president has voted to bring Hawaii football into the MWC. More like, he’s agreed to listen to UH’s pitch. Doesn’t give me a good feeling.

  265. RainbowCliff November 19, 2010 4:11 pm

#162 Old Diver: Sir, you are quite welcome! The BIG WEST is

going to be a challenge to UH as the fans really support their

teams, especially the students. THUNDERDOME really gets after

opposing teams and playing up in Stockton against Pacific is no

picnic in the park. Arenas and gymnasiums gets very LOUD and students

at Northridge and UC Riverside are right on top of the opposing team.

Going to be a whole different atmosphere then the WAC as Hawaii has

to bring it’s A game every night as Big West teams are going to get

PSYCHE playing UH and not let the new kids on the block get to thinking

they are going to win it’s conference championship !

Will be FUN and exciting as good food, entertainment and shopping

in the Anaheim area are welcome to all visitors as first class ambiance

is at your service or a nice stroll down Katella or Harbor avenue !

You are going to LOVE Downtown Disney !

  266. LizKauai m/ November 19, 2010 4:13 pm

    #263 – Says it all… I posted it to Facebook, hope you don’t mind…

  267. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 4:15 pm

So how many of you think TCU will stick with MWC given a Hawaii invite to make it a 12 team conference?

  268. Kazz November 19, 2010 4:17 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

The sentiment is the complete opposite with folks representing UNLV and the Las Vegas Bowl though.

It adds to my headache…. 😡

What the hell is San Diego State’s problem? Afraid the UH fans will outnumber the SDSU fans at their home games against UH?

  269. Kazz November 19, 2010 4:20 pm

TCU probably feels they are above the mid-major/non-AQ teams.

Teams with that attitude do not want to fly to Hawaii for a conference game every other year.

So NO. TCU is good as gone in my book.

  270. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 4:22 pm

    Kazz,

If you saw the quotes I posted yesterday even Air Force AD thinks Hawaii is a good add.

I think SDSU is just being very conservative. I think in their hearts they know that Hawaii’s addition will only benefit their AQ status hopes.

I haven’t heard much from NM, TCU, Wyoming, CSU officials as to what they think about adding Hawaii.

Also from what I see of Fresno and Boise message boards they are mostly all for Hawaii joining.

  271. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 19, 2010 4:23 pm

If MWC could get AQ status by staying in and adding Hawaii…what would be the easier route to a BCS bowl?

The Big East or the newly formed MWC? I would have to say Big East for sure. Only thing is their basketball stinks. lol and big east basketball does not stink. lol…football only members i guess.

Former Redskin Injured In 2-Car Crash On Big Island

    POSTED: 11:47 am HST November 19, 2010

    UPDATED: 4:20 pm HST November 19, 2010

HONOLULU — Former University of Hawaii and NFL quarterback Colt Brennan was injured in a crash on the Big Island on Friday, sources told KITV4.

The two-car crash happened at about 10 a.m. on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Makalawena Beach. Police closed the roadway while officers investigated and emergency teams responded. Brennan was a passenger in the car, sources said.

The sports utility vehicle that Brennan and his girlfriend were in crossed the center line and hit a car head on, police said.

The second car overturned during the crash and caught fire, sources said.

Paramedics took Brennan and a woman in his vehicle to Kona Community Hospital. Paramedics took a man and a woman in the other vehicle to North Hawaii Community Hospital. Emergency teams airlifted the woman of that vehicle to the hospital.

Brennan’s father, Terry, told KITV4 that the former quarterback suffered broken ribs, a broken left collarbone and head injuries. The doctors do not know ho dangerous the head injuries are, Terry Brennan said.

A medical team will fly Colt Brennan to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Terry Brennan said.

Terry Brennan and his wife plan to fly out to Honolulu first thing on Saturday morning.

Brennan was a late-round draft pick for the Redskins in 2008 following a record-breaking season with the Warriors, leading them to the BCS Sugar Bowl. He had a short stint with the Oakland Raiders during the preseason.Copyright 2010 by KITV.com All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Na wahine up by 8, evenly matched game. Our advantage, free throws, we had 18 chances to 3 for Northridge. Did I hear home cooking in Hawaii. LOL. 🙂

If our Na Wahine could hit on their lay ups and put back deep in the paint this game would be a blow out.

  291. Ralph November 19, 2010 6:00 pm

  292. Ralph November 19, 2010 6:05 pm

#287 Old Diver: Thunder Railroad my FAVORITE ride as we will ride it together. Soaring over California at California Adventure is a simulated hang gliding ride that will THRILL your soul to the sights and sounds of California with a beautiful music score that any music lover will enjoy listening. Driving up Santa Barbara coast line with Pacific Ocean on your driving side is a BEAUTIFUL ride as their are many stops along the way to enjoy sights, wine, lamb and cheese.

Irvine is a GREAT city outside of Anaheim with plenty of open land and space as a chain of Hawaiian food restaurants are located in this Industrial area of major companies and corporations. Riverside, Northridge and Fullerton have GREAT shopping Malls as the Sherman Oaks Galleria can rival your Ala Moana shopping center with a food court that will have your taste buds salivating with the many different dishes, beverages and deserts.

GREAT weather all year long and the freeways are an adventure in it self as 405, 110, 105, 101, 91 east and 605 south ALL combine together to ALL Big West schools.

Pacific you are going to LOVE as it is rich in tradition located around redwood trees and have the smell of clean fresh air that only Northern California can give you. Excellent scenic view all around Stockton, California !

Welcome Tsaiko Nation to the BIG WEST !

  309. el guapo November 19, 2010 7:20 pm

GG, my guess is that everyone did have seat belts on.

  310. J November 19, 2010 7:27 pm

RainbowCliff, where in Riverside are you shopping? At Tyler? Most people I know skip Riverside and go to Orange County for shopping. Or possibly hit up Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga in that area of the IE.

On the other hand, Mommie Helen’s in Colton (10 minutes from Riverside) makes a mean sweet potato pie.

  311. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 7:34 pm

Maybe UH can arrange it with the Big West to create special season tickets for specific sports for any Warrior Fan in the mainland who wants to go to all the games in the Big West featuring UH? A % of each ticket would be shared amongst the schools.

  312. RainbowCliff November 19, 2010 7:42 pm

J: No I am not shopping in Riverside BUT I LOVE Southern California and like you know

the area and other areas outside the Ingland Empire. Rancho Cucamonga has some GREAT homes to live and the people who live there are respectful and hospitable. Mommie Helen’s in Colton I have never been to but from judging your ENTHUSIASM of the sweet potato pie I know the food is even delicious !

Fontana H.S. has always been a POWER in football as recruiting in Southern California will open up the flood gates for Hawaii to land some outstanding athletes in ALL sports !

Orange County has it ALL. A FIRST CLASS city that is CLEAN at all times !

Soak City an AWESOME water park across from Knotts Berry Farm !

  313. Ralph November 19, 2010 7:55 pm

and ALL Big West schools that travel packages, tickets, comps and pro sport games

    will be available.

Big West is even happier to have Hawaii in their league as “PARADISE” with all those

RICH children parents, relatives and friends will boost Hawaii economy as alumni are

BIG especially Santa Barbara, Pacific, Fullerton and Irvine who loves to travel and

bringing the whole family to ALOHA is marked months on their calendar before you

can say “wiki wiki” as that is how they will be moving to the Aloha State !

  332. Curt November 19, 2010 10:58 pm

I like the fact that the WAC made the counter offer. Hopefully it’ll help in keeping the MWC from asking for too much of a travel subsidy. Personally, I don’t think there should be much of a subsidy as a 13th game should generate enough $ to offset travel costs to the islands. It seems the subsidies are needed more for the non-football sports.

  333. madeinhawaii November 19, 2010 10:58 pm

MIH I read somewhere that the wvb received bracelets in past years and opt for rings for last season. Four year players, couple of bracelets, a ring and for this season how about a ring for the pinkie toe.

  343. PowderPuff November 20, 2010 1:13 am

Congratulations to both hoops teams for tonight’s victories. Spent the evening watching some future Warriors out at Aloha Stadium – quite an entertaining game between Mililani and Waianae. Godspeed and prayers for everyone involved in today’s car crash in Kona.

  345. 99club November 20, 2010 1:52 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the three involved in the accident. Thank goodness for today’s safer cars. This could have been a lot worse.

On the travel subsidy topic, some good news is that Air Force flies to Hawaii on military transport and stays on base. Don’t let the MWC add them into the calculations! The bad news is that the NCAA allows the service academies unlimited travel squads. Which enables them to do things like this: (cut and paste)

Great time at UH men’s Basketball game last night! The team really rocked and the crowd was enthusiastic! My thoughts and prayers go out to Colt and Shakti and other female driver for full and complete recovery. (So much highs and lows to process the last few days) Go Warriors! Believing it to be a BIG win tonite against SJSU!

  348. Shoko November 20, 2010 4:43 am

    *yawn*….Morning folks!

Nice win again by the Warriors last night. Arkansas-Pine Bluff then Cal-Poly (Big West) next.

Thanks to Ohana808 for link to send Colt an email at Queens:

    Aloha Colt!

My thoughts and prayers have been continually going up to the Lord for you, Shakti, and other female driver! Colt, Hawaii has so much aloha for you and we are all united in our prayers and well wishes for your complete healing of all your injuries. I believe God has so much in store for you and I believe He’ll bring you through this setback stronger than before! Colt, I along with many others–are looking forward to seeing you behind center again someday! We still believe!

…he’s had such hard luck, I hope it turns around…

    GO WARRIORS

  360. Bulla November 20, 2010 6:33 am

    mahalo Wafan,

remind me of your shirt size before next fall, we’ll have a new edition of ‘the beast’ shirts coming out……and you look good in purple, haha 🙂

  361. Bulla November 20, 2010 6:36 am

The great thing about joining the MWC is the fact that our RECRUITING can now ‘kick it up a notch’ I would think. It has been very quiet on the local front, and although we have been ‘inserting aloha’ to various players on the West Coast, we need to turn up the heat.

2011 is a solid year, and 2012 will have a great schedule with our MWC opponents.

Strike while the iron is hot………just my 2 sense

  362. d1島 November 20, 2010 6:42 am

    Once an O-Lineman, always….

Great read by “Ferd” about the behind-the-scenes work of Rockne Freitas in putting together the pieces of the MWC invite.

Never underestimate the need for a great Tackle protecting your blind side!

  363. wafan November 20, 2010 6:43 am

    Bulla . . .

    A purple Beast shirt.

    Awesome!

    Thanks!

i agree, and nothing like the sweet aroma of success when a team, even an administrative team, can put their collective efforts together for the good of the organization…..so happy that HF and his crew are long gone….it takes time to change the course of a battleship, but sooner or later, we get back on track.

hats off and kudos to all those involved….great job.

both of you guys were in that stealth mode last nite cusz we neva see you!

were in LL, row 13 and below us in row 11 was Kazz and couple friends.

Mrs A-House and I really enjoyed the game. She said was worth the price of admission when BOOOOOOO made those 3 3 pointers – crowd went wild.

GREAT TO SEE THE NOISE BACK IN THE SSC!!!!!!!

  368. A-House November 20, 2010 7:28 am

I guess Craig Thompson answered my question of what was the difference between intives to Reno and Fresno and UH – he said, UH was asked if they would be interested in joining the MWC for football only in 2012; Reno and FSU received INVITATIONS!!!!!

Big difference cause the latter can be affected by so many different ways and cause the MWC to drop the “interest”.

There is no effect. Our puny lighting is insignificant. The light of even the strongest wattage bulb such as construction or stage lighting rolls off quickly. From only a few feet away, you cannot detect the warmth of a bulb.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  400. meble bydgoszcz November 27, 2010 2:24 am

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  401. meble kuchenne November 27, 2010 2:26 am

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

People go en masse to the movies to see stories about Harry Potter and Narnia, escapist fantasies that take us away from our real world of austerity, cuts and looming economic disaster. In these tales, fighting for us we have wizards both brave and powerful. In real life, we look upon our so-called leaders and despair. If we want there to be a Narnia to escape to, we must build it here. Ourselves.

Defense may not always win championships, but it allows you to compete for them. The NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense qualified for the playoffs all 10 seasons this decade, including the New York Jets in 2009. New York’s presence in the AFC championship game marks the fifth time the No. 1 defense has reached the title game this decade. Now the Jets are trying to become the third top defense to capture the Super Bowl this decade, joining the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers.

There is no reason that North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong-il, should take those words seriously. Mr. Lee made similar noises in March, when the North was accused of killing 46 South Korean sailors by torpedoing a naval vessel, the Cheonan, and what was the result? A pacifist South Korean electorate punished Mr. Lee’s party in regional elections, and the attack faded from the headlines.
