  7. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 6:07 am

    Whitey:
They do about two hours of conditioning (running, lifting) in the morning, then go to class, then go 5-on-6 for about 90 minutes in the afternoon.
After that, a bunch of them went to play basketball.

  8. letsgowarriors June 4, 2009 6:09 am

any other young ones at cooke/ching yesterday besides the qbs and tonga?

wheres the boys in the trenches? at zippys or something?

  9. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 6:14 am

The linemen lift and run in the morning and afternoon; they also do footwork in Klum Gym.

  10. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 6:15 am

And everybody watches videos every day.

I need a combination sunscreen/umbrella. The weather in Manoa is tricky.

  19. labrat June 4, 2009 6:45 am

ST do you have a special teams depth chart?

  20. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 6:46 am

    labrat:
I didn’t get one of those, but the Australian guy is the punter, the kicker on scholarship is the kicker, and Luke Ingram is the long-snapper.

  22. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 4, 2009 6:59 am

    Yuck, yuck.

Actually, you can find all kinds of hats and head coverings in manly-men styles at Kaiser’s pharmacy. I’m sure that similar items can also be found at major retailers as well.

Don’t risk skin cancer or extra wrinkles. Had a meeting yesterday with a staffer of an elected official and had difficulty in not staring at her face which looked like an aerial photo of a dried-up lake. If she’s 50, I’d be very surprised.

The Stadium Authority is holding a special meeting this morning to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate ways to help UH reduce its costs and expand its revenues. I don’t think any non-Authority members will be on it, but I certainly hope that either Jim Donovan or Carl Clapp are at least consulted before any decisions are finalized at either the June or July Authority meetings.

  23. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 7:00 am

  27. whitey June 4, 2009 7:09 am

ST, wassup doc has excellent suggetion. get one of those big filipino straw hats and that should really help. the downside is that people may think you are the maintenance man.

    All-America football player… fancy that.. I didn’t know that.

Last I heard, Hugh was on all kinds of committees and a member of various organizations. I’m sure he’s as busy or busier than ever in sports related venues.

  70. Rob25 June 4, 2009 9:52 am

    Those videos are cool!

They did a great job spoofing the boy bands and yet looking like they could be an actual group. Good thing that they are busy with conditioning or Mack would have to ban all players from doing music videos. I mean really, they could fall off the side of a mountain or twist their ankles performing some of those dance moves.

  71. koakane™ June 4, 2009 9:56 am

Gay Patek says Jacob had a great morning practice. He recorded the morning’s ONLY interception, and made a beautiful knockdown on a corner route by a slot receiver… He looks to be one of the early camp keepers…so a blogger from the tiger cats said and of course I agree!!!

“Kung Fu” was before my time, but I watched “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues” on a regular basis when I was younger and of course Carradine STOLE the “show” from Uma Thurman in Kill Bill 2.

Favorite scene from the whole movie was his dialogue with Thurman on the porch of the church when he first makes his appearance in the film.

Hard to believe he supposedly hung himself.

  122. Krebs June 4, 2009 11:52 am

Advice for Alexander: When in trouble, don’t hold on to the ball too long; throw the ball away. Don’t take a sack and play another down. He’s got to make his reads quicker compared to last year. Other tidbits: UH should play UNLV every year (on the road). It would be just like a home game for Hawaii. USC wants to play UH so that they can beat up on us and use it as a recruiting tool for prospective players from Hawaii. Come on, when was the last time UH even came close to playing USC. It’s always a blow out and things will never change. People are just dreaming when thinking UH can beat, much less play close to the Trojans. In a way, I feel sorry for Greg McMackin.

    Krebs…

I hear ya. They used to also say that Hawaii would never have an undefeated season. Never beat Boise. Never win the WAC outright. Never play in a BCS Bowl. Never have a Heisman candidate.

I’ve seen USC go down against teams UH has beaten. So why not dream the dream? After all, it’s just a game, and if you can’t dream big, why bother?

what affect will the coaching style and teachings of our new oline coach have and what will be the effects?

  148. al June 4, 2009 1:25 pm

kia also needs to retool his physique. this guy has the physical attributes that no one else on the team has.

more importantly…he needs to take a mature and serious approach to his game. this is his last chance if he has any visions of grandeur dancing in his head.

  149. al June 4, 2009 1:27 pm

hisatake….he has worked so hard in the two years that he has been out here. he has physically become a major specimen. he obviously has the determination having gone from defense to offense in only two years, which represents 50% of his total football experience.

yah, i am pulling for this guy. one season to prove it or lose it. i am thinking that he will be in somebodies nfl camp next year.

I concur. If at Aloha Stadium, let’s make sure his seats are in orange section for that game… 😐

  151. Kazz June 4, 2009 1:31 pm

In 2007 at the Boise State game, I saw a lot of students or people my age with “Rush The Field” shirts.

About 3 minutes left in the game me and my friends started making our way down from our seats to get close to the barriers, then… HPD with the SWAT gear came out to a chorus of “boos” from the 50,000 in attendance.

We started making our way back up to our seats.

Then as Colt took that final knee on BSU’s goal line, I saw the student section pour onto the field with HPD moving to protect the goal lines. Realizing we weren’t going to be clubbed or maced by Honolulu’s “finest” we ran back down, funny thing is the Rainbow Dancers looked worried and all of them tried to stop a lot of us from jumping over the railing. At this point the stadium ushers didn’t bother doing anything, eventually we made it on the field and ran like there was no tomorrow.

It was beautiful. While I was running and laughing it seemed like forever but at the same time I couldn’t register the moment as it seemed like a dream. I lost my friends in the chaos and then started hugging and hi-5’ing total strangers.

When I met up with my friends in the end zone I took to me knees still in awe of the sight. In the background I could see fireworks being set off by those that made their way back the parking lots. By this time the cops and security have seen enough and started directing people through the North end zone tunnel or through the seats again.

I lost my friends again and soon found my way back up next to the marching band. I guess they were busy celebrating too because about 20 minutes had passed since the end of the game and only when I got next to them did they start playing the Alma Mater. I took my hat off and stood next to the saxophones and thousands still in the stadium stood tall and proud to hear the UH Alma Mater playing. It was proud moment and had I not already shed some tears on the field I would of started tearing up again.

It was a moment that needed no photos or video camera footage on my cell phone.

    It’s forever in my mind.

  152. Kazz June 4, 2009 1:32 pm

    SteveM,

No worries, my season seats have always been in the orange (North end zone). 🙂

I was high fiving everyone on the field…and while that memory is forever burned in my brain, I have a picture to prove i was there in that historic moment….brings me to tears..

ai-eee-soos…#162…I believe you speak of the game where Jeff Duva dropped a the halfback pass when he was all alone and wide open for the TD. I also believe the score at the time was 6 – 3 USC. That would have made it 10 – 6 UH going to the 4th. As it turned out, I believe UH lost 16 – 3…to eventual national champion USC that year.

So, we have had our moments against big name schools.

  186. Kapahulu June 4, 2009 3:35 pm

#162/174 The score going in to the fourth quarter was 7-5 USC. I believe the final score was 20-12 USC. Awesome game.

  187. protector June 4, 2009 3:49 pm

In answer to Krebs on blog # 122, (Jesse) James pointed out a time UH lost by 13. a number of years back on the mainland, UH lost by a score of around 53 to 38. Someone with a better memory, please correct me. In that game, UH was giving them all they could handle. On one incomplete UH pass play, the corrupt zebras let the USC guy pick it up as a “live fumble” & gave them 7 points. USC is good but teams like that don’t need to have the refs cheat to help them win. USC would’ve won by less than a TD if I’m not mistaken. USC players I recall waited in the tunnel to shake the hands of Isaak Sopoaga & a number of other players to recognize their performance. I believe that the best new recruits we’ve got will prove to be Coach Shaw & Coach Tormey (along with the new punter & kicker) ; I predict those 4 individuals will make a gigantic difference!

  188. madeinhawaii June 4, 2009 3:57 pm

Every member of the team has to believe that they can win the game. They have to be convinced of the possibility or when they have the lead they will squander it in disbelief. And they will never win.

  189. madeinhawaii June 4, 2009 3:59 pm

I should add that they should start off thinking that they deserve to win and come out at halftime with the same attitude.

  190. (Jesse)James June 4, 2009 4:00 pm

  192. warriorfanny2 June 4, 2009 4:05 pm

lgw #8. (zippy’s) yup. Doug Calland, fb HAT for the buckeyes calls it metabolic syndrome: a clustering of symptoms associated with abdominal adiposity (obesity) that demonstrates a high risk for cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus.
Football linemen often seek a weight gain routine w the goal of becoming larger than their opponents.
Ideally, the increased body weight would be increased muscle mass, but often players increase their body size by accumulating more adipose tissue, specifically in the abdominal region. Some athletes are indifferent to the composition of their weight gain and need to be monitored and placed under professional advice from their trainers and sports nutritionists.
Running is not only important but should be monitored.
    Ditto with nutrition.

  193. NYUH June 4, 2009 4:16 pm

Lindy’s had Estes as the second best center in the country after the guy from SC.

Hawaii not in the top 33 of receiving units. Two years after being the top offense in the country and all those years in the top three of passing? But that will change. I like this receiving corps.

  203. Long Time UH Fan June 4, 2009 4:47 pm

    12/2/78 USC 21-5
    9/4/99 USC 62-7
    9/13/03 @ USC 61-32
    9/3/05 USC 63-17

  204. madeinhawaii June 4, 2009 4:47 pm

    Regarding weight and football players…

Steroids also became a factor in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Shula said steroids were “probably a part” of the boom in size, especially since testing did not begin until 1987.

“Without a doubt that happened, people looking for a magic pill to get as big and strong as they could be,” Shula said.

Supplements and untested drugs like HGH are likely factors in continued growth. But ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who has been covering the NFL since the ’80s, said the steroid ban has changed the frames of some of the players whose careers require packing on and maintaining the pounds.

“The bodies are different,” Mortensen said. “They’re not Popeye bodies. They’re obese bodies.”

    And weight on performance.

“Truth is, bigger isn’t better. Better is better,” Schlereth said.

    Research supports Schlereth’s claim.

Since 1980, the two teams with the highest winning percentages — the San Francisco 49ers and Denver — had the lightest offensive lines.

Of the five teams with the biggest offensive lines over the past 25 years, only one franchise — the Raiders — has won more games than it has lost.

When Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian kept hearing coaches talk about the importance of size, he decided to put the theory to a test, comparing winning percentages to the average weight of players on each team over about 10 seasons.

“We found higher weight had no bearing on winning — none,” said Polian, who was the general manager in Buffalo when the Bills played in four Super Bowls. “There was a lot of noise about ‘Big is the answer.’ We tested it. It’s not valid.”

The offensive linemen who played for the perfect 1972 Dolphins, including two Hall of Famers, averaged 251 pounds, 13th of 26 teams. Size apparently means little this season, too. The Dolphins average 321 on their interior line, the fourth highest in the league, but they’re 1-6.

Polian now is with a team that might spur a reverse copycat trend. The Super Bowl contender Colts average 302 pounds of protection for Peyton Manning — 30th in the league.

Still, it’s hard to resist the big guys.

Actually, (from UH website) “The Warriors and Trojans have met a total of six times, including three in the last 10 years – 1999, 2003, and 2005. USC has won all six meetings in the series which began in 1930.”

    ST,

Do you know if Blaze Soares has been going through unsupervised workouts? Not too many have the work ethic of Corey Paredes and Corey may end up being our sole starting strong side linebacker in the fall.

ai-eee-soos…#162…I believe you speak of the game where Jeff Duva dropped a the halfback pass when he was all alone and wide open for the TD. I also believe the score at the time was 6 – 3 USC. That would have made it 10 – 6 UH going to the 4th. As it turned out, I believe UH lost 16 – 3…to eventual national champion USC that year.

So, we have had our moments against big name schools.

J(J), thanks for the reminder. The thing that I remember most about that game was how our middle linebacker Scott Voeller played. Scotty is a ’74 graduate from Damien High School who was assigned to shadow Charles White on the field. Scotty had a whopping 22 unassisted tackles that night on Charles White, majority of them either at, or behind the line of scrimmage. Scott might have been the best inside linebacker that I haave ever seen suit up for the Rainbows/ Warriors.

One day about ten years ago, he came up to me and asked me, “hey, what do you think about this guy Jeff Ulbrich playing for UH?” I said that I didn’t know, I guess he’s not too bad. Scotty, who was a man of very few words nodded and said, “I think he’s pretty good”. That’s when I knew that Jeff Ulbrich was going to be a real good ballplayer. For Scott to say something like that about someone, you really gotta sqeeze it out of him.

  218. Pride. June 4, 2009 5:12 pm

The key to beating those big BCS teams is simply you’ve got to believe that you can. You have to have an understanding of what football is really about. You can’t show up in September and cross your fingers and hope that you can win. You’ve got to out perform your opponent in the eight months leading up to that date. If you’ve prepared well from January thru August, in the weight room, on the field, in the film room, and on the chalkboard, then you will believe that you have a chance. Then come game time, you believe and you have confidence that you can win. At that point everyone on the team has to understand that they need to give 100% on every play, and they need to “do it right” on every play. If Hawaii were to give 100% and “do it right” on every play, they’d win every game. They would have been undefeated in 2006. They have to have the mind-set of doing it right on every play, all eleven guys, including special teams. It takes discipline. Hopefully that’s something that we have this year.

Years ago, 1995, when I first started chatting online, I likened online chat to an out-of-body experience. You feel like you are floating somewhere out there in the upper corner of the chat room looking down at the conversation taking place. Detached, yet involved. Emotional, yet spiritual.

    LizK,

Emotions ran high for all of us in 2007… and EARLY 2008.

But getting back to the end of 07 regular season.

Some of my friends won’t admit it, but as soon Gerard Lewis (I think) picked up the mid-air fumble by that Washinton player to end the game, we all kinda broke down in our section and so did some REALLY big braddahs around us too.

It was emotional for the people that have been waiting a lifetime to celebrate a moment like that.

All the crap in the beginning of 2008 and anything that may come after in the form of adversity, will NEVER take away the euphoria of that entire season.

No one can script a better experience.

  259. Kazz June 4, 2009 6:14 pm

    Al,

Ryan Mouton was the CB closest to the Washington receiver in the endzone. When that UDUB player leaped up for the reception Mouton wasn’t close enough to get vertical with him so the UDUB kid actually caught the ball and Mouton dropped his head as if to say “damn…”, BUT on his way down onto the turf the ball fell through his hands and ended up kicking the ball (all in one motion while falling down) to Gerard Lewis (or Myron Newberry).

Sitting in my seat in the orange level in the North endzone, I was watching Mouton all the way. So yeah it wasn’t him.

IS THE DANA TAKAHARA-DIAS / COREY NIELSEN WARRIOR BEAT EPISODE REPLAY UP AND RUNNING?

  276. labrat June 4, 2009 6:51 pm

JJ the score was 7-5 going into the 4th quarter. The final score was 21-5.

UH showed they could play defense with the big boys that day. They used a 5 man line with 3 linebackers and only 3 dbs. The They held Charlie White to under 100 yards. Arvenitas, Smith, Voeller, Scotts, Tuinei and Talaesea had a good game. UH had lbs with size that year and a couple of very physical tackles.

Too bad Jeff dropped the pass still it was an exciting game.

  277. labrat June 4, 2009 6:54 pm

Oh yeah UH had one of my favorite fullbacks that year. A really good blocker and could carry 3 or 4 guys on his back. Too bad a knee injury shortened his career.

  278. A-House June 4, 2009 6:54 pm

al: you live on the windward side? if not, we can drop by LTUHF house and pick up the “mochi” – it will be on our way to the tailgate – promise not a single piece will be missing!

  288. Stephen Tsai June 4, 2009 7:29 pm

    Jokes from Highlight magazine:

What did the paper say to the scissors?
    Cut it out!

Wife: “Doctor come quickly! My husband has swallowed a fountain pen.”
Doctor:”I’ll be right over. What are you doing in the mean time?”
    Wife: “ I’m using a pencil.”

First Snake: “I hope I’m not poisonous.”
    Second Snake: “Why?”
First Snake: “I just bit my tongue.”

    Why do bees hum?
    They don’t know the word!

Ron: “Which do you think is more useful, the sun or the moon?”
“Why the moon. It shines at night when it’s dark. The sun shines during the day when you don’t need it!”

What did the police dog say to the speeder?
Stop in the name of the paw!

Diner: “Waiter, there’s a bee in my soup.”
Waiter: “You said you wanted alphabet soup.”

A woman walked into a pizza parlor to order a pizza.
The person taking her order asked. “Would you like your pizza cut into six pieces or twelve pieces?”
The woman replied, “Six please. My family could never eat twelve.”

Sammy: Do you think tha anyone can tell the future with cards?
Danny: My mother can. She takes one look at my report card and then tells me exactly what will happen when my father gets home.

Cody: “Did you hear about the two bed bug that fell in love?
    Tasha: “No. What happened?”
Cody: “They were married in the spring.”

Pisa will make $1 million this season with the Bears. He would have made $3.25 million if the Rams hadn’t released him…Chicago is getting a bargain this season, especially since he’s expected to start. However, next season some team will pay Pisa quite well if he has another fully healthy season.

New Bears linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa said he chose the Bears for the opportunity to win and compete for a starting job. But Tinoisamoa wasn’t going to play for nothing, and NFLPA records show he is due to make $1 million with the Bears this season. The 2009 minimum for a veteran with four to six credited seasons is $620,000.

  291. Garret June 4, 2009 7:39 pm

Two groups mice were fed the same high-fat diet and the mice with the shunt remained skinny while the mice without the operation got fat. So, they ate a high-fat diet like the other mice and got skinny due to increased metabolism…

So, mark Friday, June 5th on your calendar, and get down to Krispy Kreme for a free doughnut on National Doughnut Day!

I personally feel you guys should just can the videos; gives more time for the Q&A. That’s the main reason why I watch, anyways. (Well, that and to see Princess Leila, of course. But that goes without saying for all of us.)

    UNLV

In its 50-year history, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), has undergone an amazing transformation, from a dusty outpost on the south edge of town to a thriving urban research institution. Along the way, thanks to its innovative frontier spirit, UNLV has kept pace with one of the country’s fastest-growing and most enterprising cities.

  316. d1島 June 4, 2009 9:24 pm

The university’s origins were humble, indeed. In 1951, when the post-war boom had swollen Las Vegas’ metropolitan population to more than 50,000, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), established an extension program. Twenty-eight students began meeting for classes in the dressing rooms of Las Vegas High School’s auditorium. In 1954, the Nevada Board of Regents founded the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada, popularly known as Nevada Southern. Students adopted the Rebel name and mascot to reflect their desire to break free from UNR.

  317. madeinhawaii June 4, 2009 9:25 pm

I didn’t know you could bring in one bottle of water per person to the UH games. Anybody know what size bottle that is?

  318. d1島 June 4, 2009 9:26 pm

In 1969, with the board of regents’ approval, the university adopted its current name. By the following year, as Las Vegas’ metropolitan population reached 275,000, UNLV enrolled more than 5,500 students. During the 1977-78 academic year, UNLV surpassed UNR in total enrollment.

evening tsai-ko’s 😛 hope everyone is have a fine time after a good dinner. it nice to sit down to a quiet place and catch up on today post in the blog.

Pride; J(J), thanks for the reminder. The thing that I remember most about that game was how our middle linebacker Scott Voeller played. Scot is a ’74 graduate from Damien High School who was assigned to shadow Charles White on the field. Scotty had a whopping 22 unassisted tackles that night on Charles White, majority of them either at, or behind the line of scrimmage. Scott might have been the best inside linebacker that I have ever seen suit up for the Rainbows/ Warriors.

my best memory of scott during the USC game was when he stuffed cwhite on a 4 or 3 and 1 with the game at 7-2. the handed off went to white who tried to hurdle over the middle and there was scot jumping into him and throwing him back for a loss. the crowed went wild when it happened. and yes I coached at DMHS when he was there.

yep I was coaching at Damien at that time.

So I read in Ferd’s article today that JD turned down a reported one million dollar payout from an SEC school and I’d say it’s ingenious because if he accepted the first initial offer it gives the appearance that he doesn’t have any empathy for the boys that have to fly over 5 time zones, risk injuries from playing against bigger and faster players, wear themselves out and suffer psychologically if the team is on the tail end of the score.

Now, if there’s another offer rendered from the SEC school, which JD didn’t name, he can say he gave it some thought and the trade off was of one that was too hard to refuse. He can say even though it was UH playing over there and UH not getting a home date it would have been illogical not to except the money.

And it would have instantly absolved him of not thinking of his players. This way he can say to the players and coaches some sacrifices are needed here benefiting other athletes in the program, whose teams may have been facing the axe. He can say by playing this SEC team your giving the school national exposure, receiving huge money and laying the groundwork for future teams.

In other words by perhaps waiting out for a second offer it would make him out to be savvy and caring.

And whats bold well is that he probably feels that the unnamed SEC team will up the ante anyway.. And I think likewise, too.

Looking at the SEC school and speculating which one is courting UH–if I had to guess I’d say it is Florida wanting to play us again.

For one you’d have to look at Florida’s future out of conference scheduling to understand this. Saying this bluntly Florida’s out of conference scheduling is a farce, with games scheduled against teams like-Furman, Jacksonville State, Florida International, Maimi OH, Appalachian State. It’s scheduling that doesn’t buffer the school from media scrutiny and loss votes from the pollsters and this can weigh heavy if the team is on the bubble of BCS Championship birth–where pollsters, the coaches and computerized voting account for a team’s strength of schedule.

This is where Hawaii might look enticing to Florida to play again–Hawaii’s strength of schedule (67/120 last season and probably dipping into the 30s-40s in the years they might line up with UH– when UH has also on their scedule USC and Colorado and the front runners from the WAC.

Aside from strength of schedule, marque, and passion that the players and fans bring to the game UH is alluring to Florida because it doesn’t jeopardize a blemish on the record, yet it garners them them votes from the pollsters more than playing a Furman or a Jacksonville State. This is understandable, and JD should realize this and UH should solicit top dollar.

Prediction, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the unnamed team (I think it’s Florida) extended the payout to 1.5 million..

I’m off to San Francisco in the morning so I guess I better pack my clothes.

High temperature in PHX tomorrow: 100 degrees
High temperature in SF tomorrow: 54 degrees

Looks like I’m packin’ heavy for the two days I’ll be there.

  360. Committed Road Warrior June 5, 2009 12:53 am

Way too late to ask this, but I’ve got Saturday night open while in SF.

    Suggestions?
