Early test for Blaze

• Leftside linebacker Blaze Soares suffered what is being described as a strained calf muscle during today’s drills. He was taken by motorized cart to the training room for medical tests. He will undergo an MRI at 4 a.m. — yes, that’s before dawn —Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
• With Soares and right-side linebacker Adam Leonard (tight hamstring) sidelined, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane played on the left side, Solomon Elimimian moved from the middle to the right, and backuup middle Brashton Satele was promoted to first team.
• Center John Estes did not participate in the second half of practice to rest a sore right shoulder.
• Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea did not practice because of a triceps injury. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI today.
• Quarterback Tyler Graunke still has not fulfilled the academic issues needed to resume practicing.
• Quarterback Brent Rausch had one of his best days passing.

Among Rich Miano’s many duties — associate head coach, walk-on coordinator, defensive secondary coach – is the role of assigning jersey numbers.
Miano has made it a point this season to not assign No. 14 (Tim Chang) and No. 15 (Colt Brennan).
The hope is that one day UH will begin retiring jersey numbers.
Until then, Miano will do that himself.

I don’t know that retiring jersey numbers is a good thing. I realize that you want to honor your best players, but you would run out of numbers at some point.

  7. lava1 August 11, 2008 8:31 am

It’s about TEAM, especially at the college level. I don’t think they should retire numbers. Wearing a number can be an honor to a player. No one is going to forget Colt or Timmy.

  8. PONO August 11, 2008 8:36 am

I know Timmy did a lot for Hawaii football and set many passing records but how can you not also consider Noga who was an All American to have his jersey retired.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid August 11, 2008 8:40 am

    Great Morning All!

    Very “short” weekend.
Well, football is back and the schedule is filling up already.
Two-a-days start in Manoa today. Prep football this weekend….au’ryte!

    Have a great day erryboddy!

  11. d1島 August 11, 2008 8:50 am

Kinda think that in college FB retiring #’s may not be a great thing.
You can tell a recruit, “You can be the next Colt (or Al Noga).”

  12. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 8:52 am

    Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes….

Hmmmm…I have to agree with some of the comments about retiring numbers. I mean, at some point, you’re gonna run out of numbers for players to use…and we can’t start having a QB with a number like 157….MWAAHHAHAHAHAHA

Football is in the air again….and will be hitting full stride soon….as D1 said, “AURYTE”

  13. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 8:54 am

Hey, DMHS was the feature in Wes Nakama’s blog…how come KK wasn’t mentioned as one of the greats??? MWAHAHAHAHA

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid August 11, 2008 8:54 am

lava1 has an interesting point. Then again so does PONO.

Just for fun, what does everybody else think? Further, if you think retiring numbers is a good thing, which other ex-Rainbows or ex-Warrior football players would be worthy of that honor?

  15. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 8:56 am

    Hiya!

    I have a question.

Does anyone have an inkling what time the Washington and Cincinnati games will be? I just realized I need to make plae reservations and flights are scarce. Any chance they will start before 2pm?

    plae=plane

  17. Maverick August 11, 2008 8:58 am

If retiring a number from the the college career, then a there should be a following to a higher level. Colt is achieving that goal. All he did was give, give, give to this team, and will probably keep giving back while continuing his path of success.
I don’t agree with Changs retirement. He put up stats and won many games, but retiring a number has hall of fame status with a follow through. Chang hasn’t achieved the follow through process.

  18. J-Dog August 11, 2008 8:59 am

    Where’s Tyler?

Is he gonna make good on his self-imposed deadline of returning sometime this week?

I hope he didn’t go to the Herman Frazier school of Public Relations.

  19. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 9:01 am

I like the “self regulating” way of not handing out certain numbers for a period of time. OTOH, poor Colt has to wear the number of a former Skins QB who did not do so well. The reverse can be said about retiring bachi numbers

  20. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 9:02 am

J-Dog- hopefully Tyler is studying his a$$ off somewhere and will make the grade soon!

  21. Garret August 11, 2008 9:03 am

I agree with the statements about about how retiring numbers for college teams may not be a good idea. In addition to what PONO pointed out –how do you stop when you start retiring numbers? TWO Nogas should have their numbers should be retired if Tim Chang’s number is retired, IMHO.

Numbers can be a good recruiting tool. UH could go after a top-tier QB recruit and tell the recruit that Colt has agreed to pass on the number to the recruit if he goes to UH…that could be a huge recruiting weapon for UH that is perfectly legal with the NCAA.

Texas has a history of a particular LB number, and that has been a recruiting tool, a source of inspiration to their LBs (the number can be awarded to a player who has proven his worthiness on the field and worked hard all offseason), and a nice way to get new players to learn a little about the history of the program. UH could do the same with the numbers for Niko Noga, Al Noga, Colt, and a few other numbers.

  22. J-Dog August 11, 2008 9:05 am

Not sure about retiring numbers, but for anyone going to watch the game at Florida, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium has a nice hall of honor with huge banners of former UF players.

  23. J-Dog August 11, 2008 9:08 am

Lately Fox Sports Net has been showing old California HS football games. Last night was De La Salle vs. Mater Dei (Colt’s alma mater).

Wasn’t watching it long enough to see what year it was, but it looked like before Colt’s time.

  24. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 9:08 am

J-Dog, thanks. Will look for that. I like the idea of having banners to honor special players. Now if only we had a UH stadium… 😆

  25. expat August 11, 2008 9:09 am

While it is a nice honor I would be concerned about where you start and how you honor those, like Noga and Elam, who had brilliant careers in the past. Elam in my book was and is the most sucessful Hawaii player — although there are at least a half dozen who also had the kind of remarkable careers that might warrant that kind of honor. Sounds like something that would take an inordinate amount of time spent in committee meetings that could be better spent doing something more productive.

  26. Maverick August 11, 2008 9:09 am

If your roster is exceeding into the 90’s count, you can only retire a few numbers. I believe there was another player on last years roster that was also assigned # 15. Forget the name, but was listed on the UH site.

  27. Garret August 11, 2008 9:10 am

    J-Dog,

Back on February, Tyler gave this quote (printed in the Advertiser on 2/8):

Saying that he hopes “to be back” Monday, Tyler said:
“It’ll be a week at the most.” (HA)

If you check back on what happened with Tyler’s participation in the Spring, you’ll note that it was a LOT longer than Tyler’s optimistic projection. That was why I cringed when I read the wording of Tyler’s quote regarding his return to Fall camp.

  28. Maverick August 11, 2008 9:11 am

    Maybe retire the last name?
No wait,. that doesn’t work. haha

Imagine having to not let Colt Brennen Jr. play at UH since the name was already retired.

    I know, stupid humor.

Just need to honor the name on a banner around the stadium from greatness that goes beyond the call of duty.

  29. da princess' classmate August 11, 2008 9:12 am

kinda agree with you guyz, here’s one example – it’s like wearing #55 at ‘SC, right? in da future, wearing #15 here could be a miniature version of following in those LB footsteps at USC, following Mcginest, Claiborne, Seau, Keith Rivers, (iirc) and now they’re trying to use it to persuade Manti.

my old eyes have a hard enough time w/ 2 guyz wearing da same #, how we gonna handle if 3 guyz start wearing same #’s or if you have to start wering #’s in da triple digits, 😆

and how in the world do you distinguish who to retire and who not to retire, I sure wouldn’t want that job

  30. Garret August 11, 2008 9:13 am

Article about how the jump in travel prices cost UH an opponent to end next season:

A trip to play in Hawaii sounded like the perfect reward for the seniors on the Longwood University baseball team.

The school had made the jump to Division I, and coach Buddy Bolding thought the Lancers deserved a memorable end to the 2009 season.

Phone calls were made. Prices were gauged. Money was raised. Then airfare from Virginia jumped $600, to $1,300 a ticket. Suddenly Longwood was saying “aloha” to paradise — and not as in hello.

Garret, I had the same thought the other day about Tyler. During the spring camp, same scenario, same statement.

Too bad, he will be on the back of the bus with QB’s ( If or when) he returns. Too little time, too much to make up.

  34. Garret August 11, 2008 9:17 am

This Reno-area paper predicts UH to beat Nevada this season. Seeing as they are predicting Nevada will be 5-2 when they come to Aloha Stadium, it is a sign of respect for UH that they are predicting a UH win.

Last year’s loss to the Warriors, who played mostly without Colt Brennan, still stings. This year’s rematch is the first turning point game for the Pack, who have not won in Hawaii for a while. A win will put Nevada at 6-2 before it plays Fresno and Boise .

A loss, though, dampens the Pack’s chances for a bowl game. But history will prevail and Nevada will leave the islands empty handed.

    Nevada loses by 7.

  35. Garret August 11, 2008 9:19 am

    Maverick,

I agree with what you said. Unfortunately for Tyler, the team can’t wait for him to be ready to join them…they have to get ready and the other QBs are learning the new offense and improving with it each day.

  36. Maverick August 11, 2008 9:21 am

I have a hunch that Greg Alexanders odds for making the starter is getting stronger by the day.
I know he only has a 2 and 2 situation with playing years, but can you imagine this?
Our 2010 opener against USC at home with Alexander leading the team.?
Moot point, but it’s good to dream.

I have a good feeling about that season. USC, then Colorado. Ya Daddy O, With Macs recruiting weighing in Hawaii’s favor now keeping the Big boys at home, this could be a head turner for all the media knuckleheads

  38. Manoa Mist August 11, 2008 9:23 am

Agree with most folks here – not into retiring college numbers. UH has a system in place to remember its highest achievers – the Hall of Honor. And that’s for all sports. However, if you were going to retire a number, it’d have to be 15. Gave up pro money to give Hawaii its first undefeated WAC championship. Criteria for retiring your football number: finish in the top three for Heisman voting.

  39. Garret August 11, 2008 9:24 am

dpc’s example of USC’s #55 is a good one. I agree with the idea of putting banners up or some way to honor former players more visibly at Aloha Stadium, but I’m not in favor of retiring numbers except in extreme situations.

Colt might actually be an exception to me for retiring numbers, but even in his case I’d prefer his number to be passed down to a top-tier recruit. Or, maybe a returning All-WAC QB could be given the option to change numbers.

  40. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 9:24 am

I feel sorry for TG, really I do, but there comes a time in football when you may have to just cut a guy loose. TG played with heart for Hawaii and for that I am grateful. However, the fact of the matter is that TG didn’t get things done in the classroom when it needed to be done. This isn’t the first time he has gotten into academic trouble. He knew what the consequences of his actions would be. If I were in a similar position, I would have focused on the task at hand and given all that I could to getting my academics in order so that I would step up and lead my team. Unfortunately, TG didn’t seem to do that when it counted and is now trying to make it up. There is no excuse for that, especially since it happened in the spring as well.

People may get upset with me for saying that but that’s just my opinion.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  41. Bulla August 11, 2008 9:25 am

valid points, but to realize that not everyone will ever be happy is the first consideration. after that….go for it, haha.

  42. Garret August 11, 2008 9:25 am

CBS Sports doesn’t respect UH that much…

The team formerly known as Hawaii will drop off your radar: Colt Brennan and all his best receivers are gone. So
is the coach (June Jones) who made it all happen. Quarterback Tyler Graunke faced academic problems early on. Oh
yeah, and the Warriors start the season like they ended it — in the belly of the SEC beast (August 30 at Florida).

  43. Garret August 11, 2008 9:26 am

Colt was mentioned here, but the context isn’t great.

While some of the mobile or Run ‘n Shoot QBs of the game may either switch positions or not work out in the NFL, you can’t deny that college football just wouldn’t be as great if Colt Brennan didn’t get the second chance presented by June Jones. Pass-heavy teams are fun to watch, even if they usually have difficulty with the big-time programs.

  44. gigi-hawaii © August 11, 2008 9:32 am

Maybe, Tyler did try very hard to pass the course, but it was so tough, he couldn’t. Maybe, it’s too late to change his major.

Reminds me of the time, I took 3rd year French at UH. No matter how hard I studied, I flunked the final and the class. I just had no talent for this particular foreign language. On the other hand, I got an A for Korean.

    Don’t assume Tyler didn’t study.

  45. tom mui August 11, 2008 9:33 am

The discussion of retiring numbers is really interesting. The only problem is how do you determine which numbers should be retired. And you have old-timers like me wondering how you would treat the old players like Tommy K, Skippy Dyer, Tuunei, Miano, White, Elam etc etc.

You do have the Collegiate Hall of Fame that have players who never gotten beyond that recognition where they never made the (Pro) Hall of Fame or even made it big in the pros.

In our case, it would be people like Timmy Chang, Joe Onosai etc.

Hope things aren’t too serious for Blaze Soares.

    It’s football, guys get hurt.
The guy who is expected to fill the lead WR role if Percy Harvin can’t rehab fully got hurt today. Louis Murphy came out of the Gecko medical facility with a boot on his foot.

Murphy, arguably the team’s most mature leader, has a boot on his right leg to protect a sprained ankle. Coach Urban Meyer expects him back late this week. –Percy Harvin should also return later this week from that heel injury that kept him from working out last week, Meyer said. I really think Harvin will be fine unless he isn’t practicing until late next week. As long as he has two weeks to run through his routes and stay fresh, Harvin’s return should be smooth. Right now it’s just not crucial he blazes through drills every day. Meyer knows that.

  53. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 9:50 am

gigi…I am not assuming anything. From what I understand, it is a course that is part of his major…not some elective that you can just blow off and squeak by. For example, Organic Chemistry was a required course for all Biology Majors that went to UH (at least it was in my day). I knew that going into my major. I also knew that it was one of the toughest courses out there in the sciences (not as hard as biochem but that’s another story) and was a course used to weed people out of the biology program and medical school program. Knowing that, I made darn sure that my course load wasn’t that heavy with difficult courses for those two semesters and studied my butt off (probably averaged 4 hours of study a day) to pull off the “A”. Yeah, I could have settled for passing with a “C” (which I needed to do since it was a required course for my major) but that just isn’t the way I work. I don’t settle for anything.

My point is that, to my knowledge, TG needed to get a “C” in this course, thus it was probably a course required for his major. TG knew he had to get a “C” in order to play ball. I believe TG only had this one class to complete. He should have been doing everything in his power (i.e. tutoring, studying, extra credit work, professor meetings) to get the job done. If you can’t get a “C” in a course that’s part of your major, maybe you shouldn’t be in that major?

That’s just my opinion and I may be wrong on the grades needed, and courses taken by TG, so if I am, someone please correct me. Thanks.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

retiring numbers….nah. hall of honor would be nice or a recruiting room full of the past greats whether on the gridiron or in the community.

too many to mention and too few numbers to dole out each year. we already have double numbers.

chang and brennan should be exhalted in another manner for their ncaa milestones.

can’t help but think that bess would have had the only 4 peat 1000 yard career recepts in history. can’t help but think had he and rgm stayed what kind of draft positions they might have had.

  68. Jason August 11, 2008 10:18 am

I don’t like retiring numbers in college too, but I can’t see anybody else ever wearing #15, at least for the near future. It’s like Rainbow baseball, you only get two numbers on the wall — Coach Les and Tatsuno. Gotta be really special, and those two were. Same with Colt. Even though Chang broke an “unbreakable” record, he wasn’t at that level of “special” that Colt was at. I know we had All-Americans and future Pro Bowlers in the past, all of whom we can be proud of, but I can’t imagine any of them as the representative of UH’s program. Colt unified the state and stood as the face of Hawai‘i football for the world to see.

I hope Blaze’s injury is minor, and that he’ll be healthy for this season.

  69. Geezy August 11, 2008 10:20 am

Aunty Gigi – IMHO seems like you are making EXCUSES for Tyler. He’s already doing a fine job with that, himself.

Bottom line is he’s RESPONSIBLE for his own actions. As a senior and a quarterback he should lead by example. Tyler is a STUDENT/Athlete, emphasis on Student. At this point it would be hard for him to lead a horse to water. NO JOKE!

Tyler – prove your critics wrong! And if so, I commend you.

Hey al!!!! hahaha! Went to the other end to get some Japanese food and ended up buying enough to feed 2 starving Tsaiko’s! Then the daughter wanted to eat dessert so we went to Yogurtland. The pistachio yogurt is the winnahz! Doesn’t hurt to toss in some mochi, nuts, and chocolate syrup!

  84. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 10:39 am

I hope Heather McMackin isn’t waiting for questions and thinking nobody wants to talk to her…..that would suck….

Gang, turns out that TWO servers for HawaiiMoms were choking. The techs claim they are fixed now, but still looks slow to me.

Anyway, the easier thing to do might be to just go straight to:

    http://www.HawaiiMoms.com

… and then look to the pink “Get Connected” panel on the right side. Heather’s chat should be floating right on the top.

Quick! Only 25 minutes left!

    Good morning…oops…afternoon Tsaikos!

On retiring numbers, I say no, perhaps a 5 year moratorium for notables like Colt, then recycle’em. A Hall of Honor at which the players’ numbers are prominently included could indeed serve as motivation for recruits and other new players. I think that’s a better way to memorialize the great ones.

Conor (poster from this past weekend) — Are you out there? If so, give a shout. Got some information for you.

“Hawai’i Represents at the Car Show
Posted on August 11, 2008 by Matt Terl

Still not accustomed to seeing the green and white of University of Hawai’i athletics at Redskins Park, but as the Cult of Colt grows I probably should get used to it.

This is Dan, at yesterday’s Redskins Rides car show.

In a sea of burgundy and gold, Dan has found an alternative way to demonstrate his fanhood. “I was a Redskins fan back in the days when Mark Rypien used to throw the ball around, but I kind of lost touch” he says. “Colt is really what brought me back.” There’s some family influence here as well — his wife Dolores is a big Hawai’i fan, and is also hugely excited for Colt to come to town. As are people whose skin tone works better with that dark green than it does with burgundy, I suppose.

Ironically, most of Colt’s fans failed to notice him driving out of the parking lot in a BMW that would’ve been perfectly impressive under ordinary circumstances, but that was completely outshined in this specific context by things like Santana Moss’s fire-colored Dodge Magnum.”

There is no doubt it will be hot and humid in the Swamp, but our staff is doing a good job of preparing the team by hydrating them and keeping practices at a fast pace so they will be in great shape by August 30.

    +++
Everything revolves around Game Day in our family. We prepare all week and on Game Day Greg and the team and staff travel to the stadium together on the bus as they stay in a hotel the night before.

My daughter, Shannon, my grandchildre Kayla and Taylor and I go out to the stadium early and get inside as soon as possible. We like to watch the teams warm up. We do get nervous and have our own goofy traditions about what we wear and so on. It’s an exciting but stressful time for us. Now that Taylor is older, he will ride on the bus with the team and be down on the field part of the time.

Over the years I have learned that I DO NOT COOK ON GAME DAY!

  183. HiFlyer August 11, 2008 1:35 pm

Stretch – do you still have any of them left that you can bring to the K-kall this weekend?

  184. Stretch August 11, 2008 1:37 pm

(WarriorMojo was not present so you get the abbreviated, not too detailed report of linemen)

The lineman had their one on ones again today and the O-Line had a better showing than when I watched on Thursday. Kia, Ah Soon, Letuli and Hisatake did well holding off the defense.

First line up for the 11 on 11 was left to right, Kia, Ah Soon, Estes, Hisatake, Steinhoff. They will need to step it up real soon.

I am noticing a lot more players on the sidelines. I hope they are minor injuries and the training staff is being overly cautious letting them back into the mix.

Conditioning seems to be getting A LOT better.

  185. Stretch August 11, 2008 1:40 pm

I don’t have ANY stickers left right now. A-Joe comes back Wednesday so maybe can make more by the weekend.

  186. WarriorMojo August 11, 2008 1:41 pm

    Florida? Check!

    Oregon State? Check!

    Wifey? Shoots, I better check.

Stretch, I think your mom wanted you to give my mom a couple stickers.

    Esme and out.

  187. da princess' classmate August 11, 2008 1:51 pm

    stretch

thanx for dat report. good to hear the conditioning is get’n better. hopeful the o-line picks up their play fast. always hear laupepa doing a good job, but never seems to crack da starting 5, wonder why??

  188. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 2:01 pm

Good to hear that conditioning went better today…it seemed like some of the guys were winded on Saturday…and Coach had to get on some of them to “run” not “walk” back to the sidelines, or huddle, etc.

  189. Stretch August 11, 2008 2:06 pm

    (J) J – still some of that going on but a difference from when I seen them earlier last week

  190. Kazz August 11, 2008 2:06 pm

Saturday was just not a good practice day fo the guys in white and orange overall.

The guys in green are really going to have to carry a lot of slack if things don’t pick up on the offense.

BTW, was there any reason why Coach Mack moved up last Saturday’s practice an hour earlier?

Did he do it at the last possible minute (in which the players will know) just to keep them on their toes?

  191. (Jesse) James August 11, 2008 2:11 pm

From what I saw on Saturday, you can really tell the guys who got out there during the summer and conditioned from those that didn’t…it shows big time for some…..but the time for what ifs and should haves has come and gone and the time to step it up is here and now….

    C’mon Warriors…I know you can do it….!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    5. Colt Brennan WAS 160

  193. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 2:35 pm

Stretch, are they still doing the conditioning drill where they stop practice when the whistle blows and run (what looked to be suicides)?

  194. Stretch August 11, 2008 2:58 pm

When there are 3 horns, they have to do the running. 10,20,30,40 yards, back and forth. It happened two different times this morning.

  199. mp August 11, 2008 3:18 pm

no fights today. very good. while we still have to play with emotion and intensity, we got to play smart. cannot afford any critical untimely penalties during game.

really disappointed with TG situation. was looking forward to a break out year for him. wish the best for him but the team is got to move forward like they’ve been doing.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

Hamstring pulls ( Too much push push with the legs, not enough stretching and water).
Blaze is injured, results unknown. Rest up, and get advice from Colt on the recovery.
Many other injuries that might be avoided, but Football is about pain and impact. Big game on the horizon, we need EVERY Warrior!

  209. Maverick August 11, 2008 4:19 pm

Watching the Packers/Bengals on ESPN. Want to see how Brohm does at the helm.
They just did a on field interview with Mr. # 85, or “Ocho Sinco” like he prefers he wants to be called.
The dude is Out in Space. He is trying to hard to be somebody off the field, and needs to just be part of the team On the field.
Whoooosh, no room for this kine attitude on the Warrior team.

Yes, had the pleasure of finally meeting the world famous, world renowned Bulla on the racquetball courts yesterday. What a great guy! Great family man. No wonder he’s one of the founding fathers of the Tsaiko Nation. Hope The Beast tears it up for Weber State. I Mua!

    D1,

I thought that money was already “released”? Does that mean the contract will be awarded soon? 👿

  214. Bulla August 11, 2008 5:00 pm

    ok MM,
i am mailing the check to you, better yet, let me fax it to your palatial offices in downtown honolulu. if i am a founding father, would homey be a son, a daughter, a person in transition, or a boo boo?

mahalo for the props for The Beast; if you could live your dream at 18, how much would you pay, what would you sacrifice…..all i know is that the joy i hear in his voice when he says, ‘what’s up dad, how you doing? i had a great day at practice, gotta roll to a meeting, and hey dad….love you man, and thanks for everything’…. when i hear that, it is priceless.

you know, as parents, even as friends…so many times we argue about all the wrong stuff, the manini stuff, who has to be right, why you have to be right…and at what cost? you stand there fuming, knowing that I AM RIGHT, but is it worth losing the relationship with your kids, your wife, your friends…hey….BUT YOU’RE RIGHT…..so it should be ok….BECAUSE YOU’RE RIGHT…..right?

so far from the truth, sadly enough many of us do not realize that if we cannot change ourselves, how will anyone around us change….oh no, you mean it’s not them, it could be………me???? no way, I WAS RIGHT, so how could it be me?

just a thought looking back with my son, i wished there were more times when instead of trying to be right all the time, i could’ve just spent the time to make things all right. dont’ get me wrong, he is an awesome son, but when you look back, everything is so manini, so small…was it worth it?

ok, enough of the sermon about self revelation and the call for change…have a good night.

STRETCH: Don’t forget the “H” for us old guys!

AL: Got to get “OF Mice and Men” from Netflix – saw it years ago and scared the h*** out of me then – couldn’t twist or fool around with girl’s hair for the longest!

(Lennie, I think his name was, was mentally challenged – a nitwit – and while fooling around with a woman’s hair, accidentally broke her neck!).

  216. Maverick August 11, 2008 5:15 pm

    Bulla –
Very nice sermon may I add. So much friction between the families is manini at start, then blistering to nonense.
All our memories need to be positive. And yes, at times it’s better to do right, than be right.

Growing up with the song, “Cats in the Cradle” made us all reflect….and still does. Whenever I hear this song over the radio, my eyes still become wet as the hilo mist.
Please forward my ( our ) best’est to your boy, and looking forward to his Hawaii Nei return in Sept.

For those that watched the MD-De La Salle game recently, It was Kevin Millhouse the CB. He transferred in his senior year from Fountan Valley HS and played both ways at MD before a year at MtSac JC and then the
    Warriors.
MD was QB’d by a senior and Leinert was a soph or Freshman that year. Colt followed and only played his senior year at MD before Prep School in the East, CU, Saddleback JC and Hawaii.
Remember when John McKay said Football is played by people. Meaning coaches don’t really suit up.
De La Salle and Bellevue HS in WA. decry that theory on the HS level.
They just do it. Whether they have studs or not!

  219. BG August 11, 2008 5:37 pm

    Aloha all…

Went by the Schofield Px yesterday and was very pleased to see a restock of Under Armour UH stuff. Even saw a black UH golf shirt in 3XL! There was only one! Good to see some basketball gear, too.

  220. Pride. August 11, 2008 5:42 pm

Let me see. I don’t know that guy Bulla personally, but I’ve seen his posts on the blog for the past year and a half. He appears to have done a great job to prepare his son for college, as a student and an athlete. I can see a pattern and I believe that his son’s success can be broken down into three specific areas.

    #1 – Hard work.
    #2 – Work even harder.
#3 – Work harder than you did before.

Sounds like an interesting recipe for success. I wonder if it works in other areas of a person’s life. Wow that guy Bulla is really something. We should give him more test subjects to continue his experiments.

    Howzit Gang,

Kazz, howzit, no worries about the UA stuffs, I think they know what Hawaiian time is and putting it in effect for the shipments. Nah, but I think the cause of delay is because UA is still fine tuning the football jersey to exact Coach Mack inputs. So I expect something probably end of month at the soonest.

Sheesh my bruddah, I going start praying for your good health. Hate to see this happening to you. We need you on the field creating havoc and putting fear on opposing teams. Need to hear and feel the “IMPACT” of your many bone shattering hits this season!!! Get well buleh and take care yourself dayumit…

  226. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 6:04 pm

    • Quarterback Tyler Graunke still has not fulfilled the academic issues needed to resume practicing.

Time to cut his arse. No reason holding on to pilikia like this. So sad you have people making up excuses for you. Me, I have no sympathy for you at all! Class too hard…pulease…cry me a frikkin river buddy! Many opportunities and people who can help your stupid arse! Bottom line your effort was probably lacking and had too much pride to ask for help. Well guess what Tyler, you are a bonehead! I agree with Hawaiianbod, you knew exactly what you had to do, had the time to take care of it, yet still FAILED!!! I hope you feel like chit, cause you FAILED not only yourself, but more so your team! I cannot respect a player like you, a SENIOR??? Where is your committment to the team, leadership, etc??? Like I said please look in the mirror and find yourself!!!

    Re: Stickers.
During the summer workouts, not too many people were interested in the stickers.
    Now they’re amazingly popular.
Stretch is a humble guy, and he was going to hide in the background. But I made him pass them out. They needed to see the face of the guy who did such good work.

Good is good. Like when I went to look at the pics of the stickers and saw a pic of Patek praying with an agitated teammate.

    Here’s my assumption:

Stretch gave Princess Leila one of the tapa UA logo stickers AFTER the summer then some of the players saw it on her car and wanted one.

    Ya know… like an “ice breaker”… 😉 j/k

  241. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 6:19 pm

ST – Sorry, I’m just one of those peeps who expect the best out of our Warrior boys. I love our team to death and all who has ever played Warrior football, but when one guy isn’t pulling his weight it just brings the whole team down, which kind of rubs me the wrong way. When that happens though someone has to step up and put a foot where the sun don’t shine and do a little HABO and help a brotha out. I would love to see Tyler pull through and get back on the field but at this point with the team moving on without him, I just can’t see him deserving of any playing time. That would be unfair to all the rest of the boys who pulled their weight and got things done. Tyler, if you’re reading don’t take it personal, I’m only showing you tuff love brother because I want to see all our Warrior Boys succeed. Just like my Marines and myself, we’re only as strong as our weakest link…nuff said!

  246. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 6:28 pm

Aunty Liz – I hear you, to me it seems someone needs to help Tyler out. Not sure of the whole situation either, but I know enough to know that he needs help. It’s one of those things where if Tyler was a part of my team and I notice him not pulling his weight regardless of circumstances, than I feel that it would be my responsibility to help him out or lead him in the right direction to get the help needed if I couldn’t provide it. Like with all my troops that I lead, myself as a leader have only failed my Marine if I wasn’t there to give him or her guidance and help or literally put my foot in there arses to get them where they need to be. I truly believe in the concept of “One team, One Fight, All or Nothing”

  247. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 6:31 pm

Aunty Liz – I know, I fear for when they start getting attitude and start ackin funny. Usually the transisition from 6th grade to junior high is where it starts. Then once they are in high school, all hell breaks loose. Hmmm…maybe it’s time to invest in some shotguns or something??? 🙂

The way I view it, it’s a privilege to lead the Warriors. He had that opportunity. Now he doesn’t.

Just looking at the reality of his situation in words is staggering.

Now we all have our opinions on this, but no matter what the person who is the hardest on him HAS to be Graunke himself and if not maybe his parents if they are throwing in additional income to help support him out here.

(One of the reasons I never looked at an outside school to attend. I never wanted to have to depend on my parents for assistance, but heck UH Manoa was hard enough..anyway)

I haven’t played a team sport in forever so I have forgotten what it was like to have that kind of relationship with your peers so that is another “loss” he has to deal with.

Bottom line, unless there are outside forces… the “ball” was ready to be “snapped” and he “fumbled” it.

I and many other Warrior fans, had his back last season, especially in the Charleston Southern game when many “fans” 🙄 we’re giving him grief by chanting for an injured Brennan and 2008 was REDEMPTION, but alas… the path WAS chosen a long time ago I guess, and there is a reason for everything.

ST – I too feel the same way, actually being able to play football for Hawaii and represent the state’s team, all of polynesia’s team is a great priviledge! Not many are fortunate the opportunity to play football…

    Pauoa Boy,

Stretch and A-Joe would not want to violate copyright and trademark laws.

Besides I don’t think they’d want to get a late night visit from Ray Lewis.

Imagine hearing “click clack… click clack”…. just outside your window on a rainy humid Hawaiian evening… ohhhh da chicken skin!!!!!

  267. FloridaTed August 11, 2008 7:01 pm

    Hi, Gang,

Just finished catching up with the blog.

Tyler is truly a sad case of wasted opportunities. I don’t know the actual circumstances of his tragic situation, but wasn’t he in trouble in spring, didn’t coach give him clear warnings and outlines of what was expected of him? All he does is fall back into the same problem again. Aren’t there ample tutors, study hall, etc. available to the players as much as needed?

He always voiced how bad he wanted that starting job, but apparantly not bad enough. From where I sit, it looks to me that his last train has left the station without him and his goose is cooked.

I feel sad for him personally though, the team will be fine without him. I really would like to understand what happened to him this year, it just doesn’t make sense. His problems seem to be very much self inflicted.

I’m starting to get a little nervous with all those injuries, I sure hope everybody will be ready for the swamp.

  268. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 7:03 pm

Stretch – Hopefully UA understands what kine of opportunities they can make happen with that logo. I think it will help in there merchandise sales especially at home. I sport that decal proudly on my car and have gotten many requests from SoCal kama’ainas wanting one. I actually am tapped out from the supply I had and there are more than just my ride in SoCal sporting it.

  269. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 7:06 pm

Kazz – Ray Lewis could strike fear into any man’s eyes. I would definitely do like when Jehovas Witness come a knockin’ on the door and hide 🙂

PB- Hawaii is viewed as an undersized market in many circles. The NFL team shops STILL does not ship to Hawaii.

The Redskins web and blog sites reeled from the onslaught of Hawaii hits when Colt got picked and while users were pushing on us for awhile, the akamai people in charge are starting to recognize the power of the Hawaii football fan.
I am making some nice new friends behind the scenes by just spreading a little Tsai-ko culture.
We’ll get more respect when they see the power of the Hawaii wallets! 😆

  272. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 7:19 pm

Aunty Liz – I’ve been peeking at the Redskins blogs and stuff and I think we have also built more Hawaii Warrior Fans as well. My bro has gotten some stuffs shipped from the NFL store before to Hawaii??? Hmm..is it just NFL team specific stores maybe??? I’ve had stuff ordered before that got sent to Hawaii, I just called and when I filled out the shipping information had to input a special number so they knew where to send it. Not sure if that still applies cause it’s been awhile since I’ve ordered something…

  273. Jason August 11, 2008 7:23 pm

I used to buy stuff on eBay before, and I hated when the seller was shipping via USPS Priority Mail, but they said they would not ship to Hawai‘i. 😡

  274. Garret August 11, 2008 7:24 pm

The Texas high school team that we discussed last season that does the haka is now rated the #1 high school football team in the country! They have a lot of players with Polynesian backgrounds that could be UH targets…

The Euless Trinity Trojans — owners of two state championships and a 40-3 record over the past three seasons — are No. 1. * They’re at the top of the National Prep Poll, which crowned area rival Southlake Carroll national champ in 2004 and 2005. But no Texas team, not even the highly decorated Dragons, has ever opened at No 1 in the National Prep Poll. * The Trojans hit the practice field Monday. Why are they No. 1?

    Division I talent

RB Dontrayevous Robinson (Nebraska), LB Earnest Norman (Kansas), S Prinz Kande (Kansas) and CB Eryon Barnett (Texas) make the Trojans rich in talent.

    Physicality

Trinity is the home of bruising football and 300-pound linemen. The Trojans keep it on the ground and make sure they don’t beat themselves.

    The Haka

Is there a more fearsome sight than a bunch of wild-eyed football players crouching low, chanting in unison, hitting their helmets, slapping their thigh pads and baring teeth? Not around here.

  275. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 11, 2008 7:26 pm

When you make your order on an NFL team shop site and go to enter your address, a list of states comes up. It includes only the lower 48.

I like Amazon.com – esp. the free shipping!

  276. Garret August 11, 2008 7:26 pm

    Great news about Bess!!!

Beck got the least work, but he threw a touchdown pass on a fade to Davone Bess, who jumped over Chris Roberson to get it. It was a beautiful catch and throw.

Speaking of Bess, it appears that he’s been moved up the depth chart. He’s now the slot receiver with the starting unit. Greg Camarillo played that role in Saturday’s exhibition game, and Ernest Wilford held it last week after getting unseated by Derek Hagan for the starting spot.

Bess handled a lot of the punt returns in Monday’s practice and I suspect he’ll be the receiver getting the tryout as a returner against the Jaguars.

  277. Garret August 11, 2008 7:27 pm

Pride mentioned a couple of weeks ago how Ferguson will make Samson better, and I agree. This Miami reporter came to the same conclusion now.

NT Jason Ferguson – Last week I asked coach Tony Sparano which Dolphins player he’d like by his side if he ever found himself in a bar fight and with little hesitation he said Ferguson was his man. That wasn’t a surprise to me one bit. And those who watched Ferguson in his handful of snaps against Tampa Bay saw why. This guy is a handful to block, and going against him daily should make center Samson Satele better.

  278. Garret August 11, 2008 7:30 pm

Live blog of Miami’s practice. Note that Bess was with the first team in 11-on-11 Red Zone drills and caught a pass on the first play.

    11-on-11 Red Zone drills.

    * Pennington is up first.

After a quick out to Bess and a sweep left by Ricky, Pennington throws a Pick Six to Andre Goodman.

Nice lob to Bess in the right corner for a touchdown over Chris Roberson.

  279. Garret August 11, 2008 7:32 pm

I think that Dan Morrison’s comments on what he looks for in QBs probably still applies when judging UH’s QB battle.

“There’s just no way of getting around an accurate quarterback,” said Morrison, who works extensively with the quarterbacks. “Colt Brennan was the most accurate quarterback I’ve ever been around, and that’s why he was as successful as he was.”

Examining arm strength and arm speed helps determine how the quarterback may hold up after attempting pass No. 44 in the third quarter of a game. Decision making and athletic ability are the tipping points if all else is equal.

  280. Garret August 11, 2008 7:34 pm

By the way, I think that a Tsaiko had his e-mail account hacked and a bunch of e-mails went out to people in his contact list. I already called him about this and hopefully he can get control back of his e-mail account. The only difference was that they e-mail used Malaysia instead of Nigeria.

Beware of e-mail scam offering to rescue friends

“Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, HIV/Aids, Poverty and Lack of Education”. Then the person – whose e-mail account has been hacked – is portrayed as being stranded in Africa after forgetting in a taxi a “little bag”

  281. Pauoa Boy August 11, 2008 7:38 pm

Howzit Garret – Thanks for the news on Davone, Miami’s receivers suck and Davone should crack the starting lineup when the season rolls around. At least Pennington is there so that should help even more.

The New York Times is launching a social networking site–this seems like a good way for newspapers to make money, as they have the local subscribers and issues for them to talk about…especially a newspaper covering a unique area like Hawaii. I wonder if the Advertiser folks are looking at this as a way to generate a new revenue stream…or if things go to heck in the negotiations if this could be a revenue-generating option for the workers.

    Aloha Tsaikos!!!

Wow – kind of a sobering medical report from ST, and this is only the start of week 2! Yikes – I hope this is a fluke and not a trend. That may be the one downsides to the “Practice-hard, play-hard” philosophy.

I took a quick look at Esme‘s blog and her chat with Mrs. Coach Mack. It’s really too bad that the HA site had so many problems. I’m sure more Tsaiko’s would have participated and it would have been nice to get a few more of her responses published. I also wish more Mom’s participated too! 🙁

I will be listing the meal/pupu/goody potluck items that attendees might voluntarily bring to the Karaoke Call so everyone can see the overall “menu”. Not everyone should bring food, otherwise we will have too much–so don’t feel you must bring something.

Please email me with your tentative food item or speciality dish (hint, hint). I will list it in the Events calendar section above.

    SteveM,

You might want to note in your travel site that I will have a minivan when I’m in Oregon for the OSU game. Lori just got a $35 per day minivan rental on priceline. The minivan might come in handy for rides from the Portland breakfast CC to Corvallis for the game. It might also come in handy for shuttling Tsaikos to the stadium from wherever they are in Corvallis.

One of my favorite shows is “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” on the Fuud Channel! Fuud Tsaikl – no surprise!

So I think we’re still looking for a breakfast meeting place, Sat. 9/13 in Portland. One idea was the Airport – PDX Radisson where several road-Tsaikos will be staying. But many comments on various sites suggest it’s only a small restaurant, and perhaps a bit pricey. So…. doing a bit of research…

May I suggest Shari’s Restaurant? It seems to be a NW chain with a complete menu – everything! They even offer a Sr. discount – but I’m sure no one qualifies for that! They even market their own special coffee! They are 24/7 and located under 3 miles from the Radisson (5 mins) on the other side of the airport. What do you guys think? Here’s the link:

  291. Garret August 11, 2008 8:03 pm

    brew808 and others,

I agree that the list of injuries is concerning, but if you look at other team’s camps they have similar or worse lists. Florida has some key players with major (even season-ending) injuries, so relative to that UH is doing okay. Thankfully, UH has better depth than I can remember the team ever having, so hopefully the injured will heal quickly and the Warriors who are getting extra reps in practice will benefit from their extra reps. That will make the team even deeper!

  292. Garret August 11, 2008 8:06 pm

Sea Life Legoland opened today…I will wait for reviews before I decide to get tickets–we can get lifetime tickets for $300 because we have lifetime Legoland memberships.

And thanks for pointing out that spam e-mail. I got that too, and was thinking, Huh?

  295. Garret August 11, 2008 8:12 pm

    brew808,

Your suggested place in Portland sounds good to me. I think that Liz might get some suggestions from her family, but if nothing better is brought up it sounds like your suggestion would be a good one.

I think that many of my family’s meals while we are in Corvalis will be cooked by Melissa’s Mom…she is from Hawaii (Melissa’s Dad is a retired UH prof) and it will be great to get home-cooked Hawaii food again! Sorry, I cannot invite the Tsaikos to their home to eat…but I’ll be happy to join that breakfast CC.

  296. brew808 August 11, 2008 8:12 pm

The key word is “depth”. Yes, UH “has better depth than I can remember”, but it’s still not as deep as the UF’s, SEC, and many of the “big boys”. One exception is the QB’s at UCLA. That position is wide open for Craft. Whatevers…. it’s not Warrior Football – so whatevers!

  298. Garret August 11, 2008 8:15 pm

Abe sure had a big crowd watching his first practice at USC with full pads!

Every USC home game is sold out this season, so fans in need of a college football fix jammed Howard Jones Field on Sunday night to get a glimpse of the Trojans.

A crowd of more than 1,000 stood five- to six-deep along the sidelines and some spectators also watched from a platform atop the baseball stadium as the Trojans went through their first full-pads workout in preparation for their Aug. 30 opener at Virginia.

Very OT, but how would I know if MY account was hacked?

    TIA

  301. d1島: August 11, 2008 8:18 pm

    brew808,

I won’t be going to the OSU game but just to chime in on Shari’s.
I’ve been to that one by PDX and it is pretty decent although not a real large place. Hopefully, you folks won’t get there at a real busy time ’cause it didn’t strike me as a place that takes reservations – kind of like a Zippy’s maybe?

  302. Garret August 11, 2008 8:24 pm

    duffer,

From what I’ve read about this particular hack, the people who are hacked cannot access their e-mail anymore! The hackers change their e-mail password and totally take over their account. One guy has been trying for a long time to get his e-mail back because all of his contact information for others is stored there, but hotmail (Microsoft) hasn’t been very helpful.

If your e-mail account is hacked, your e-mail contacts will get an e-mail that is supposedly from you that will include your real name…if nobody calls you about how you are stranded in Malaysia or Nigeria, then this e-mail hack hasn’t affected you.

  303. brew808 August 11, 2008 8:25 pm

    d1島

Eh – what are you trying to say? “not a real large place” – Are you suggesting us Tsaikos might not fit in this restaurant? More importantly, what can you say about the fuud??!!!!

BTW – for your lunchtime repast between practices, may I suggest Andy’s Sandwiches in Manoa? Hmmm, I may have to head up there soon and get an eggplant melt sandwich. My fave!! Especially now that Mid-Pac has started and I’ll be in Manoa every day. 😀

OK, Jason, I see your site is back up.

  313. d1島: August 11, 2008 8:41 pm

    brew808,

After what happened at Violet’s Grill the other week, let’s just say, “size matters” for all Tsaiko CC’s.

    heheheh

The fuud quality at Shari’s is decent and as is true with many popular chains on the mainland that I’ve tried, the portions are pretty good.
I usually would have breakfast there before I’d start my drive over to La Grande when #1 son was in school there and that’s a 5 hour drive but breakfast would hold me over.
You mentioned that the restaurant at the Radisson was kinda small but I haven’t ever been there so I can’t say how it compares to that Shari’s but I thought I’d share my experience of Shari’s anyway.
I checked SteveM’s site for the count of people going to the OSU game and it’s growing quite large. If you get a big percentage of those folks meeting for a breakfast b4 driving down to Corvallis then you may want to leave some extra time to get seated or call the restaurant to see if they would take a reservation. JMHO

Jordon Dizon shares his NFL linebacker first experience and insights into the new speaker helmet for defense:

“The good thing about this learning process is – the coaches are patient. They’re very patient. Especially the MIKE position, it’s difficult and I also changed positions (from college). So my keys – my reads – are real different. They are being patient with that, too. But they’ve been very helpful, especially the other players. When I do something wrong, I’m usually mad at myself and they just say, ‘Hey, let it go. Relax.’ So having those kinds of people around you who are patient with you helps a whole bunch to keep me even-keeled.

“Having the speaker in the helmet actually went really good besides the fact that (Joe Barry) can yell at me from the sidelines. Especially when we had the two-minute drive at the end of the game, that was really helpful because you stand there and you wait for signals and you have to go through all these calls – all these dummy calls – and by the time you get done the offense has already run a play. So having the coach in your ear and telling you the exact play and you can relay it to the other guys is very helpful.”

Some interesting news from this *long* chat. The answers posted below are from the Miami Herald’s beat writer for the Dolphins.

GM Jeff Ireland loves Mauia. I don’t see him getting cut at all and I don’t see him losing his spot unless his production suddenly collapses

  332. Garret August 11, 2008 9:46 pm

One problem for Bess jumping ahead of so many WRs at Miami is that Miami has some big-money contracts for some of those WRs. So, they wouldn’t want to cut or bench players with those types of contracts…so if Bess beats them out then that means that he’s *clearly* ahead of them, as if it was close they would give the benefit of the doubt to the vet with the contract.

The Dolphins gave Wilford $6 million in guaranteed money. That doesn’t guarantee him a spot, but it is a big hit if they cut him. Just saying

Greeting fellow Tsai-ko’s just back from a relaxing walk around the neighborhood delivering high five’s to my neighbor’s. Some of them are so deeply embedded in coaching youth sports, I rarely get to see them until late at night when they are outside enjoying the cool night breeze blowing across the ceded lands.

Hope everyone had a good Monday. I had a very rewarding day today and am blessed to have some very good friends and family folks who made it so.

Ok- here’s the question and the problem.

How are you all doing with the new iPhones?

My problem is- as much as I love my Treo, it does not send messages back to the Warrior Beat. When I try to post, it goes to the HA search page more often than not. I’m tired of futzing with the interface and don’t want to get stuck and out of touch in FL or other games.

    Whaddya think???

Bummer about Blaze. Hopefully the tests come out OK tomorrow.

“…am I the only one for whom the blog is looking weird?” Sheesh, even when she’s blogging, Esme always uses impeccable grammar. Never catch her dangling.

So your blog host has decorated his chair with a very brotherly “No Illegal Towing” sign. It’s sometimes posited here that midgets and other critters around the office occasionally screw with me because they’re too scared to go after ST. Yet while Big Bro does occasionally does the “rain hell upon thee” bit, he’s always in control. I’m the only one in the family with actual violent tendencies. I’m just saying.

but, we were born of a nation that recognizes free speech, right?
    right?

  390. Mike August 11, 2008 11:56 pm

Hi Gigi, Big Sis is out and feeling much better. Thanks for asking.

Homey, what did you order? Tiff and I went last month. So much better going with someone who knows what to order beyond the usual stuff.

Where’s DPK? Are the trees safe?

  391. al August 11, 2008 11:56 pm

    filipino food? from where?

tomw. i’ll probably stop at paradise mkt in kahului to get my filipino food fix. they have so much stuff to choose from that i haven’t even had every item. i especially like the adobo pig feet or soup style.

    very good kare kare too.

  395. homey August 12, 2008 12:00 am

mike – just a quickie…Since they are new owners we have to try the basics…Kare kare, fried pork, and chicken adobo. Next time is the sari sari, mongo beans with paria leaf and one of the guisado’s.

  396. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 12:01 am

    Esme later.

  399. al August 12, 2008 12:02 am

    snack time? sounds good.

gigi….i think homey was trying to tell you that in comparison yours is like an ant and tizer’s is like an eleph-ant.

mike/steve……good to hear about your sister.

let’s hope soares is okay. can you imagine the young man’s frustrations?

  400. Mike August 12, 2008 12:02 am

    Hi Al,

Free speech is always worth defending. Unlawful towing that results in thousands of dollars worth of damage to a brand new Harley is, in my biased opinion, not defensible. Big Bro uses his right of free speech to stick up for me, which is a much more mature alternative to my natural inclination. Of course, free speech has it’s limits, especially in a corporate office.

  401. al August 12, 2008 12:03 am

    ….and bernie mac.

  402. SteveM August 12, 2008 12:03 am

…as I said in post #162 today, I can’t stuff that almost works… worse scenerio because if it didn’t work at all, a reasonable person would just dump it and get something that works reliably…rather than keep throwing more time and money at it.

Note I am speaking in general and not specifically about this blog nightmare 🙄

Well, work day again tomorrow. Can’t stay and chat about more pleasant things tonight. Good night everyone!

  403. gigi-hawaii © August 12, 2008 12:05 am

Mike, what’s your current mode of transportation now that your bike is in the shop?

  404. Mike August 12, 2008 12:08 am

Liz, the helmet has been moved to a secure location while the nieces and nephew are visiting. I should probably get Tiff a matching jersey, but I think it would clash with the Kamehameha gym shorts.

Shoot. Now I’m hungry for kare kare. Chichiron (sp), too.

  405. SteveM August 12, 2008 12:09 am

Mike — re: #400. That’s when you should let WarriorMojo do his free speech stuff? 😡

    ….ok, ‘nite!

  406. al August 12, 2008 12:11 am

actually wouldn’t the proprietor be responsible?

i would consult with mojo on this one. i’ll bet he is a tenacious defender in the courts. plus, this is his type of expertise.

  407. Mike August 12, 2008 12:12 am

Gigi, the bike can’t go to the shop until the adjuster examines it. For now, I’m riding with my left arm up near shoulder level and my right arm down by my waist … and I can’t turn right unless I have a LOT of clearance. Grr.

G’night, Steve. Hope you have a more pleasant tomorrow.

  408. J August 12, 2008 12:15 am

    ST, Pauoa Boy…

When in San Diego and hunting down BBQ…eat at Phil’s. And yes, this is coming from the vegetarian.

The new (and huge) location is on Sports Arena, but lacks some of the “charm” of the old place on Goldfinch. What’s important is that the food comes out faster because they have a larger kitchen now.

Phil’s beefy ribs and onion rings are a couple of the favorites of friends I’ve taken there.

Good morning Tsaikos. This is not my bag to say anything at this hr of night, but so many things that are not good have been happening this year that I don’t know what is going on.

I come home, lurked thru the blog and find out that Blaze is down and needs major observations. What the hell???

My friend went to Denver with United and his flight was all screwed up and United was no help. He comes home and tells me that his friend was diagnosed with cancer.

I have absolutely no knowledge of what is happening and hope things will turn and be better for all.

P.S. Got duffer’s note from Kekoa. What else to add?????

  412. whitey August 12, 2008 12:38 am

  423. Joel August 12, 2008 5:01 am

    Aloha,

I am writing from Gainesville, Florida. I am from Kalihi and just want to welcome the Hawaii team and fans to Gainesville.

I am sorry to hear of the injury problems of the team. With that said, the team should be also concerned about the heat at the Swamp. Gainesville is surrounded by lakes, springs, ponds, rivers, creeks, and streams, as a result, the game on Saturday at 12:30pm will be very hot and humid, making it almost difficult to breath. Dehydration and cramping will plaque the team. Please pass this information to the team.

If anyone has questions about or need assistance in Gainesville, I will be glad to help.

    Go Bows, Go Gators…

  424. myki August 12, 2008 5:05 am

Good morning Garret. I’m hoping along with you and all the other Tsai-kos that all will be well with Blaze. It’s been a little scary going to practice and seeing the fellows on the sidelines rather than participating in the drills.

When you can’t find Jake, Adam, or Blaze in the midst of the action it is a bit worrisome. Hopefully no one else will go down for a while. It was great seeing the new guys (Jovonte Taylor and Dustin Blount) as well as Joe Avery making use of the JUGs machine on their down time.

  425. myki August 12, 2008 5:15 am

Hi Joel, Welcome to the Warrior Beat!

I’m one of these people that is always hot and looking for air conditioned areas. Initially began making plans to attend the game, but the more I heard about the heat and humidity the more my enthusiasm faded. I’m sorry to say that I finally decided against the trip.

Hopefully our guys will be a 100% by game time. They have been practicing mid morning and late afternoon but I’m sure it does not compare with your heat and humidity. Plus you don’t have our trade winds!

  426. myki August 12, 2008 5:23 am

Sorry, it was not Jovonte on the machine but one new guy and two others who were having some difficulty during the drills.

  427. Stretch August 12, 2008 5:40 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Weather doesn’t look like it will cooperate for a morning grass field practice. Too bad they don’t have Ching/Cooke Field pau…. damn politics!!

    Welcome to the blog Joel.

  428. Joel August 12, 2008 5:40 am

Many Florida fans feel the same way as you, myki. I too would normally forgo a noon game at the Swamp, but it is the opener and it is against Hawaii. For me it is a dream come true, Hawaii in the SEC.

In fact, fans begin to leave at halftime and head across the street to restaurants and bars

  429. d1島 August 12, 2008 5:42 am

    Great Morning All.

Howzit Joel! Thanks for the info from Gainesville.
I hope you’ll stick around throughout the season and keep posting.
Kalihi to Gainesville is quite a jaunt; hope you get to come back home once in a while.

I hope there’s good news from Soares’ MRI this morning.

    Ralph,
You’d never guess that KGMB needed to trim staff by watching their morning show. Why do you need FIVE people to read the newswire and keep an eye on traffic?
And don’t even get me started on the “meteorologist” 👿

I’m sorry, I’m old school. What is the new name and why did they change it?

  435. myki August 12, 2008 5:59 am

    Duffer,

Please don’t put me in the same category with gigi!! I go to all the home games and most of the practices, rain or shine. I would go to away games but it gets to be a bit pricey especially when you like to travel to other places.

    Joel,

We became the Warriors shortly after June Jones got here. Some felt that Rainbows had the wrong connotation and projected the wrong image.

To add to the confusion..the basketball team is Rainbow Warriors, the baseball team ..Rainbows, the mens volleyball team ..Warriors. The women are called Rainbow Wahine. Hopefully with our new administration ( coach, ad and chancellor ) we will have one name for the men and one for the women.
