Opening success

The time-tested belief is to not be seduced by opening night. With emotion and jitters, teams are not as good or as bad as they appear. That said, there was a lot to like about the UH basketball team’s opening victory over Montana State. In particular, it was nice to see that Hiram Thompson can make the adjustment to a more uptempo offense. Also, it was nice to see the geometry of the Rainbow Warriors’ NBA-style isolation plays. Better spacing made it easier to drive the lane, find open shots at the perimeter, and create off pick-and-rolls and pick-and-shoot. The Rainbows have a lot of weapons; it was nice that Gib Arnold used most of them.

Congrats again to the Rainbow Wahine softball team, which received their championship bracelets. Several readers, led by president Pomai, took over the booster club, which paid for the bracelets.

Al — did you know that our mutual friend, classmate, and LoCal Tsai-ko Ed (hawnstln), is arriving today in Honolulu harbor aboard the Holland Zaandam? He’s on a 14-night cruise out of San Diego going through the islands. He told me he wasn’t going to get off the ship here unless the Warriors were undefeated. Came close though.

Went to the Board of Regents Committee on Student Affairs Friday afternoon after a City Council Committee meeting and before the Wahine softball game.

    The two agenda items were:

    1. Background and Discussion of Mandatory Student Fees and Special Instructional Fees

    2. Presentation on Student Activity Program and Fee Board

There was a video teleconferencing set up between UH – Manoa College and Bachman Hall.

Interesting bit of information – no one showed up at either campus to testify and no one submitted written testimony.

The two presenters did an excellent job of providing information; however, it is very disturbing that no one impacted by forthcoming decisions attended & took part.

FYI: I’ve requested a copy of the Department of Athletics Audit presented at the BOR meeting on Wednesday.

BACK TO SPORTS: DrDoc & i stayed for the Central Michigan and Cal State/Fullerton basketball game. Like the earlier game between UH and Montana, the second game started off slowly and looked like it might be another blowout. However, that never occurred. When the final buzzer sounded and that winning three-pointer dropped into the basket, it was really a great moment – even though there were maybe 250 people all totaled left in the audience. It will be very interesting to watch Fullerton deal with the loss in tonight’s matchup against UH..

Looking forward to the Wahine softball season – only three months before it kicks off.

    my 2 cents..

stay in the WAC. give our coach a breather. give JD the time to stop scheduling D2 teams for play. we already get D2 type teams in da WAC. go get some hitters down da road. even if that means we travel. das my opinion an imma stickin to it.

  20. Pomai November 13, 2010 4:01 am

Thanks ST for posting the picture, but just like I told UH, the booster club did not pay for the bracelets, the funds were raised by a bunch of fans that support all sports at UH and read this blog. The booster club wasn’t even formed yet.

give JD the time to stop scheduling D2 teams for play. we already get D2 type teams in da WAC.

    Bighilofan2,

UH has UC-Davis in 2011 and Lamar in 2012 already scheduled. In 2012 (if UH is in the WAC), UH will play Lamar, UTSA, and TXST…all 3 games will count as D-IAA games so only 1 win will count towards bowl eligibility but all losses will count of course. UH won’t lose any of those games, but some other WAC members might have a hard time getting bowl eligible.

Assuming that UH is in the WAC, this is UH’s UH game lineup for 2012:

    Lamar

    UNLV

    Western Kentucky

    La Tech

    Idaho

    SJSU

    Texas State or UT-San Antonio

UH has some great road games in 2012 (at USC, at BYU), but the games at Aloha Stadium will be the least attractive lineup that I can remember. I don’t think that any of those teams will be a draw for the fans, but true UH fans will go for UH. Still, ticket and PPV sales will probably be way down and I don’t see a single home game that ESPN will care about. This home lineup will really hurt UHAD’s budget situation.

JD made his job a lot tougher in 2012 than it needed to be. What was his thinking in scheduling Lamar, UNLV and Western Kentucky for our home stand. Western Kentucky is a start up D1 football program. So is the Texas newbies Texas State and UTSA.

JD must have been thinking winning at all cost ,because we desperately need to improve our record. I think this schedule will cost UH in the pocket book, how many of us will be willing to pay premium seating or PPV for a perceived soft schedule, the football junkie will go to the game because it is football and it is UH football, but

    Ralph,

At least JD got a great 2013 nonconference home slate. U-Dub unfortunately will have to cancel the December game that is scheduled, but UH has USC, BYU, and Army at Aloha Stadium.

JD’s 2013 nonconference slate had USC, BYU, Washington, and Army…I cannot remember UH *ever* having 4 such attractive nonconference home games before. However, the Pac-12 rules will force the Washington game to be canceled.

  56. Garret November 13, 2010 7:09 am

The Pitt beat reporter yesterday wrote that Villanova and UCF were the Big East’s choices for expansion, but the Fort Worth Star-Telegram seems to feel that TCU is going to the Big East. It does hurt TCU’s demand to be invited for all sports when its men’s basketball team hasn’t had a winning season in *6* years.

What was once a big “if” is beginning to feel more like a giant “when” regarding TCU and the Big East Conference.

The marriage appears imminent. Two TCU sources classified the union as “probable.”

The Big East is serious about men’s basketball, and, as presently constructed, the Horned Frogs are ready to seriously compete in the Mountain West. This is no small feat for a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2004-05, and is finally recovering from the Neil Dougherty era.

…randon thoughts about Rainbow Warrior Basketball…

-Bo Barnes…he won’t shoot lights out every night but what i like about his game is that he takes GOOD shots…if he’s open watch out, if he’s not he’ll look for who is.

-Bobby Miles…see’s the court well as a freshman with good handles…the potential is obvious…needs some strength but not much.

-Trevor Wisman…love his hustle and mentality on the glass.

-Josten Thomas…nice outside shot but with that body he could learn to do some real damage inside.

-Vander Juaquim…athletic, strong and long…love his potential…once he see’s what’s happening on defense he can be a force.

-Hiram and Amis…we will need their leadership on the road.

-Coach Gib…love the passion and his ability to adjust as the game went on last night…Thumbs up so far. Hated coaching against guys like him when i coached because they would force you to adjust and work hard to keep up.

    Exciting.

    Ralph:

Muir and another foreign-raised lineman have indicated they will choose the Warriors.

Rolo, who returns tomorrow, is looking at eight prospects this trip. He is expected to “pull the trigger” — make an offer — to two.

The coaches wanted to use this week to evaluate players in person (i.e. go to games).

UH is being cautious in recruiting because they’re worried about poaching from other schools. Too often, they felt, they would hunt down players while other schools would try to piggy-back their efforts. For comparison’s sake, in recruiting, UH is the WAC, others are MWC.

  67. Stephen Tsai November 13, 2010 8:06 am

I though they should have let Bob Coolen or one of the players thank the crowd yesterday. Or, maybe, Donovan should have acknowledged the grassroots efforts of fans who not only paid for the bracelets but have volunteered to revive a booster club that was dormant for several years.

I like Billy V, he’s been a friend for several years, but he does have a death-grip on the mic. I know Kekaula is frustrated because every time the TV news stations try to shoot video of the football Warriors running onto the field, somebody is always in the shot.

Roughly about 35 people donated all together.

  86. Manoa November 13, 2010 8:58 am

Ralph, 43: The 2012 schedule ended up that way because that was all we could get.

We did get some teams on the road in 2012 that will build strength of schedule earlier in the season.

But that will be typical with the way the Pac 12, Big 10, and Big 12 are now scheduling.

  91. Not an Expert November 13, 2010 9:15 am

    UH Basketball:

Dayton Morinaga, what can one say your warriorinsider sight is awesome. You should be doing professional designs for businesses.

What you captured on the sands of Waikiki showing the men’s basketball team experiencing their time together at that early morning time shows your commitment.

Hats off to coach Arnold for bringing the team together and have them bond outside the court with the challenges. Not sure what happened after that but other coaches may want to consider outings that helps the team bond while learning and sharing what ohana can be all about. Doing things of this nature not only during the season but off season can have a lot of positives for it.

Our student athletes will learn the ohana culture of Hawaii and parents of these athletes can be assured their children are taken care of and looked after. Would things of this nature with fans and families brought together be organized. After the challenges potluck and let the culture transcend to our student athletes from the mainland and other parts of the world. This will enhance parents wanting their children to come to Hawaii.

Coach Arnold has a strong mission being here in Hawaii from statements he has made. It is one of the best hires recently and if he brings the winning tradition back it will be mo betta. Good choice Donovan.

    Good morning everyone!

Bon Voyage to a Tsaikette cruiser from Kauai who just boarded the Silversea’s Silver Spirit in Barbados an hour or so ago. 9-night exotic eastern Caribbean cruise aboard a 6 star ship. A good way to spend the bye weeks.

Also, Papajoe2 has disembarked the Holland Maasdam today after 10 nights in the Caribbean. He’s done this one before.

So, hawnstln makes three Tsai-kos taking advantage of great November cruises. Got your WIFI on, Ed? Drop us a post. 🙂

I think there should be football conferences and non-football conferences. It seems football plays by its own rules, anyway.

    ST,

  112. NorthShoreFan November 13, 2010 11:11 am

    GUUUD MORNING TSAIKOS EVERYWHERE..

First….BIG MAHALO TO POMAI, KAZZ, SLUGGER for all the hard work and coordination in getting the Na Wahine bracelets done. It is a well deserved and earned momento of their fantasitc 2010 season.

Second…Good opening night debut for the 2010 Warrior basketball team. You can see a lot of potential this team has. Up tempo on offense and defense.

Me thinks that what we saw with Hiram is something that he has always been capable of. It’s just under the “old” offense he was a bit “stifled”. Level of talent is much improved and it was great to see Coach Gib have enough confidence in the newbies to let them demonstrate what they got in the first game of the season. I’m not expecting a championship but I am expecting great competition every game.

Third…Was great to see the Na Wahines from the past. Many had their keikis in the dugout. Future Wahines and Warriors no doubt. Pomai reported athat one of the alumnae players actually tried to “offer” some “compensation” to Na Wahine catcher as she came up to bat. It was a highlight moment of the game. Competetive and fun….looking forward to the season.

Time to get some work done now…..bbl

Best, most energetic, and entertaining person at last evenings basketball game, hands down, was Coach Gib – running up and down the sidelines, frantically waving his arms/hands shouting instructions to his players. Surprised he had any voice left after the game (radio interview). That man will lose weight by season’s end if he keeps this up!!!!!!!

Like papa Leahy says, “it’s worth the price of admission”.

Contgratulations, Coach Gib. Well done! Your players have “bought” into whatever you believe in. Keep the recruiting going and soon Hawaii will be the team to beat in the WAC of where ever UH’s fortune will take us!

“The Western Athletic Conference is adding Denver University, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State to replace departing powers Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State. The University of Hawaii is evaluating whether it can get better competition by staying in the WAC or joining the OIA.”

You can even state for readers here to click the link to you own blogspot.

Though your thoughts are received well from fans here I also feel this condescending feel to some of them. For example someone will put out a thought and opinion and you serve as blog “know it all cop” to correct them. Sheesh…let people say what they want to say without making them feel so low.

Remember when you were in elementary school and there was that one student that sat in the front of the classroom, participated in everything, had the main part of the school play, won the spelling bee, –you’re that kid. When the other students wanted to participate you were right there to interrupt and reign on their parade.

I know people will jump all over me with my comments but I know for a fact I am not the only lurker here that feels the same.

I apologize for my rant but put it on your own blog. But then again you asked blog host himself so its up to him.

  124. Not an Expert November 13, 2010 11:51 am

Why don’t the WAC & MWC commissioners admit they are the farm leagues for teams until such time that they become an AQ player. I do not believe that the commissioners of these two conferences are not aware of this and that it is their job to keep schools out of the big money as long as possible.

If they wanted to be AQ they could have and should have incorporated a plan for the 2 leagues. Keeping it separate entities so that one league would have qualified for AQ status. While at the same time taking care of the smaller programs until they can build themselves up. Based on history and what and how Benson states things makes it so noticeable and the actions of the two commissioners appears to be in collusion.

As I stated before, it is the commissioner”s job of these 2 conferences to continue this farm league mentality. Doing so they are abiding by the big players and are guarantee certain rewards for themselves in doing so.

In business when 2 small players may not be able to compete with a big player merger is a way to be competitive in a short time. If the big player knows the small player is gaining foothold they are smart enough to buy them out. If each school in the heiarchy of the MWC and the WAC continue their ways and play into the pattern and allow their commissioner to direct the status quo, this scenario will continue to play out.

    NorthShoreFan,

Sarah Robinson’s home run on her sister’s pitch had to have been the “highlight” for the fans.

I knew nothing of Sarah Robinson’s accolades at Moanalua HS, but I did read back then that she turned down offers from CAL and Stanford (or was it UCLA???) to play softball for UH. Her freshman season in 2009 was kind of an eye opener as you could kind of see she had a way to go, but as Jason Kaneshiro’s article mentioned, this is her junior year and like her NFCA All-American sister, the potential to “bust out” is now and the softball talent gene in the family is showing up again.

wonder what the reaction would be by UH ASUH and students if the Texas St or UTSA message by their student body President about sports being a catalyst to better academics and their willingness to pay $300/semester – ‘m sure that not all agree, but over 70% voted AYE.

same message can be posted to UH-Manoa upper campus.

yes, it takes boku $$$$$ to create a successful athletic program and the students/profs/administrators must do their share if athletics can contribute to a stronger academic programs within the UH system state wide.

  184. madeinhawaii November 13, 2010 4:39 pm

My point is that the no-huddle gave Boise 20 more plays in the same amount of time (30 miniutes of offense). So while people can argue that our Defense didn’t do their job because time of possession was the same, our Defense actually had to defend against 22 more plays than Boise’s defense… and were in the game for about 45% more plays than the offense.

The wear and tear factor on defense isn’t in the time of possession but in the number of plays.

  185. Kazz November 13, 2010 5:05 pm

    Steve,

The incoming freshmen are indeed talented. You will like what Kliebenstein and Zamora bring in. You will also like Kaile Nakao’s defensive potential.

At 2nd it’s going to be hard to see what happens from the short fall season.

1-5 you know what you will get, it’s 6-9 that will be question marks. Will they be contact hitters or power? Hard to guess prior to playing against D1 opponents.

People MUST remember that this team is not going to sneak up on people anymore. Opposing pitchers know what they have to do.

A small example is what started happening to Majam in WAC play last season. When the better pitchers like Krieg (who will be a senior in 2011) and Melloh (gone from FSU next year) went up against her, they walked her. Expect MORE of that next season and not just for Majam, but for ALL of our batters. Teams are not going to take a chance against our batters anymore.

How we react to this will obviously determine our 2011 softball season.

Kinda weird because there is more than enough reason to believe we can win the WAC next season, but at the same time there is enough reasonable instances and dynamics coming into play to expect a little rougher road.

Taualii, Grimes, Pu’u-Warren, and Yoshikawa accounted for almost 50 of the home runs last season and let’s not forget how big Yoshikawa came up at the WCWS and how Taualii and Grimes provided a threat so late in the order during conference play and the WAC tournament.

Those kinds of players are hard to replace, especially considering those four were freshman in 2007, the prior WAC championship and super regional team so their combined experience and leadership is also next to impossible to replace.

We can still have good leadership, but it will be a different kind and different doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it’s just going to be different.

As Jason Kaneshiro’s article mentioned it, with regards to the chemistry and leadership, Grimes said it was special and unique.

What is good is that the returning girls know what it takes to win and they were already getting started a few months ago with the conditioning excercises and weightroom sessions.

Just got back to the house to change clothes before heading on into town AGAIN for the two basketball games only to discover that my 7:50 am post – #62 – is labeled Your comment is awating oderation. I gather it never got cleared – and I cannot understand why it was held back.

Let’s see if this one is moderated as well.

  187. madeinhawaii November 13, 2010 5:18 pm

    Against Colorado..

    Hawaii 55 offensive plays..

Colorado 78 …. (probably why our Defense got winded)

No huddle kills defenses… We need something similar.

  188. HiFlyer November 13, 2010 5:21 pm

The scout team needs to run a no huddle offense when they practice.

  189. madeinhawaii November 13, 2010 5:25 pm

Why just the scout team? We should have our first team practice a dozen plays or so …gas the opposition’s defense and the game is yours.

    Whoops!!! oderation = moderation

  201. Steve November 13, 2010 6:08 pm

    Kazz,

I agree with you, I just keep thinking, you have 1-5, add in Sarah and Makani, and those 2 frosh, Zamora and Kliebenstein, it can get quite scary for any apposing pitcher, they cannot walk everyone need to pitch to someone. Plus you have an improved Steph and Kaia, in the circle. Even if opposing teams know about Hawaii, I do not think it will really matter. I feel the key will be how Kelly is after she goes thru what she needs to go thru. The leadership of those 1st 5 and the 2 pitchers will keep this team focused.

    Ralph #43:

I need to look back through the archives, but I believe the agreements to play Western Kentucky and Lamar in 2012 were signed a bit before all this conference movement garbage changed the makeup of the WAC.

As was mentioned previously, the 2012 home slate wasn’t looking all that to begin with, but with the inclusion of Texas State and UTSA, it just compounds things. I agree with you that football revenues will suffer.

The UNLV game was going to be on there regardless, given the arrangement we have in place with them going long-term.

    From http://www.hawaiiathletics.com:

HONOLULU—University of Hawai‘i head softball coach Bob Coolen announced the signing of three prep standouts who will play for the Rainbow Wahine in the spring of 2012. Jordan Burton and Kayla Wartner both out of Escondido, Calif. and Leisha Liilii from Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu all signed National Letters of Intent this past week during the early signing period.

Burton is a 5-4, utility player at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Calif. where she played outfield, shortstop, third base and pitcher. She’s earned two varsity letters and hit .371 last season with 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts. Burton, who bats left and throws right, was voted 2008 Offensive Player of the Year and earned 2009 Defensive Player of the Year honors. She is a member of the SoCal Breakers club team and previously played for the San Diego Renegades.

“Jojo is an instinctual outfielder who gets good jumps on the ball and has a good arm,” says Coolen.

Wartner is a 5-6, lefty catcher/first baseman out of Escondido High School where she earned three varsity letters in softball. She earned first team all-league honors, second team all-county honors hitting .378 as a junior. She batted .486 this past club season with the San Diego Legacy which finished fifth in regionals.

“Kayla is a very quick left-handed catcher with a strong arm and exceptional bat. She hits for power as the cleanup hitter,” explains Coolen. “She is a very good signal caller behind the plate.”

Liilii is a 6-0 infielder and pitcher out of Castle High School in Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu. Last season, the lefty hit .439 for the Knights with a .975 fielding average. She played for the club team, Pearls 16-under and most recently Team Hawaii under coach Mark Glushenko.

“Leisha is an impact player with the ability to hit the ball for distance. She hits and throws left and will be used at first base and be developed as a pitcher,” says Coolen.

    nice to see aggressive defense.

nice to see an offense firing away well before the shot clock ticks down.

nice to see ten guys in the rotation with all of them contributing in a positvive way.

    nice to see some potential.

  257. al November 13, 2010 11:48 pm

how to improve the television experience of the men’s basketball broadcasts…

one, include the pregame introduction of the teams. it is good for the fans to connect to the players nightly. the introductions do this. (this is also missed for volleyball games).

second, include a post game interview with the coach and a player of the game. (ditto volleyball)

three, bring back jim leahey. he is the voice of the university of hawaii. it is as if something is missing when he is not the play by play guy. surely, he has made a few slips now and then, but still no one else can paint a better picture of what is going on than he and with all the emotion that he invokes.

so those are my two suggestions. small and simple but could be very effective and for the k5 folks an opportunity to sell more sponsorships, i.e., the honolulu advertiser’s starting lineups and the jc penny post game interviews. ]

besides these help the fans connect further with the teams.

under 5K again, revenue total better based on tickets issued unless tickets were freebies.

Student section behind the band was half empty. Students must be studying for finals earlier, : ) , I think the semester ends Dec 10 with finals.

  260. Kazz November 14, 2010 1:10 am

K-5 needs to work on improving on showcasing the more EXCITING parts of being at a UH event.

ENOUGH with showing the random and unprepared shots of certain people sitting and staring aimlessly at the court with lifeless emotion or the grandma sitting in the 4th row yawning.

MORE shots of the students and if there if the section is NOT full then use a close tight shot of them. If anything they can keep panning back and fourth between the band and the cheerleaders/dancers.

They need to be aware of where the most active parts of the audience are as opposed to just picking any ole shot.

For the people at home, the fair-weather folk, do you think they want to go to a basketball game when they are constantly seeing shots of a DEAD crowd?

Making things appear better than they actually are is another part of television broadcasting isn’t it? How else would garbage like “American Idol” keep getting people to vote more than they do for a presidential election???????????????

  261. Kazz November 14, 2010 1:21 am

Too many freebie tickets occupy the seats that fans like ME are willing to pay for.

When push comes to shove, I’ll move down when given the opportunity.

Too many freebie tickets occupy the seats in the lower bowl that represent a PHANTOM “sold out” figure when paying fans like us are willing to shell out $26.00 for one game.

May I tell you your presence and reputation carried a BIG figure during that time. I was only 18 with two other freshmen and remember seeing your stature on the steps of the quarry as you wore this aloha shirt and had black sun glasses. I must say we were in AWED of you as when sanctions were coming down you were the MAN good or bad of legal fame. Cars, condos, and money as I never saw any of it being the team before me having the allegations being aimed at them.

One thing for sure those guys transfered quick and Coaches Bruce O Neil, Rick Pitino and Pete Guilliam became FAMOUS in other areas of life or coaching legacy on college or NBA fame. I KNEW your name was FAMOUS as 34 years ago you sir was front page news and carried a BIG shadow, BIGGER then Perry Mason himself ! ( Lots of Laugh! )

  272. oldie November 14, 2010 2:56 am

I believe the story on Tom Mui goes as follows:

After the players got in trouble because the coach placed them in a commercial, Tom decided to represent the players, who were innocent pawns in the fiasco and had no money to fight the NCAA.

That got the ire of the NCAA and they banned Tom for life from ever being associated with the UH basketball team.  Later, the NCAA decided that the punishment was too harsh and decided to recind the lifetime ban.

Good ole defiant Tom refused to accept the NCAA’s forgiveness and to this day (at least in his mind) continues to carry the lifetime ban.

Tom can correct me if I have some of the facts wrong.

  273. RainbowCliff November 14, 2010 2:57 am

bighilo: Coach Gib knows the game as his basketball teachings on the mainland is being shown to you folks. GREAT recruiter who will build the Rainbow basketball program back into power and respectability. Keep developing man to man defense and running spread offense with isolation plays. I am concern with Anthony Salter as playing time is cruicial for him with leg injury delaying his progress as Hiram is playing BIG his final year !

With that much talent, playing time is going to be a challenge especially jucos who only have 2 years of elgibility. Joston is a stud and the development of Bobby Miles at the point will only make better talent keep coming in to Manoa. Bo Barnes is making his mark and the young athletic front line is going to get better with game time experience !

This team will flourish DEFENSIVELY as that is the key for them to stay in tough games agaisht tougher opponents. On the ball, weak side help, hands in the passing lanes !

Board and transition with alley oops and flying dunks !

Enjoy it kind sir as the BOWS are back !

    recind = rescind

  275. RainbowCliff November 14, 2010 3:25 am

Mr. Oldie, your recollection to that time is right on cue !

Mr Mui took a stand and for that time I THANK HIM so very much !

I was never involve with the commercial or infractions committed. The

players Reggie Carter, Henry Hollingsworth and George Lett needed representation

and Mr. Mui stepped up “BIG TIME” !

Unfortunatley, those guys were tired, hurt and confused as if they would of stayed with

the new players coming in we would of had a 20 game win season. Mr Mui is an ICON who

stood up for that time and really got UH basketball program off the hook as NCAA really wanted more years as death penalty was even being talked about.

Good folks when you see Tom, give him a BIG hug from this old rainbow warrior who represented that era and realize his stand for JUSTICE to young Hawaii athletes who

needed legal representation. NCAA did him an INJUSTICE but he saved Rainbow basketball

in which today we can all enjoy the rejuvenation with Coach Gib’s army as Mr. Tom Mui 34 years ago kept it from the brinks of elimination and represented former payers with his keen legal expertise and for that I am so GRATEFUL to you !

As ugly as the weather is here in the PNW i am glad I am not in MN!!! Nearly a foot of snow last night. Add a coat of ice under it and that is an ugly situation.

    Horray for rain!!!

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  281. wafan November 14, 2010 4:24 am

Yay for the ‘Bows and another win.

  282. Garret November 14, 2010 4:46 am

Since I haven’t heard from ST, I decided to make the call on my post on my own…and sided with the people who said to *not* post it here. I ended up finding out too much information and going on and on about it so thing got to be too long. So, if you want to read the idea, you can go to my Warriorquotes blog.

    http://uhwarriorquotes.blogspot.com/2010/11/out-of-box-idea-2-wac6-to-create-3.html

  283. Garret November 14, 2010 4:52 am

I would prefer comments on the idea to be posted here instead of my blog. I probably will shoot down my own idea tomorrow…the dangerous thing is that I started with an idea of what I wanted to happen and then tried to justify it. I think I came up with enough arguments to make things sound feasible, but there are holes in why C-USA would want this.

  284. Shoko November 14, 2010 5:24 am

That was a good read, Garret. Some parts were comical, while most were well thought-out points.

On last nights game, it was a nice win by the Warriors. Got a little scary in the second half tho. Zane and Hiram’s three-pointer in the last couple minutes was the clincher. UH will only get better as the season progresses. There is good reason to be opimistic this season.

    Go Warriors!

  285. CromabUSA November 14, 2010 5:37 am

That was a good read. You should write a book and call it “Death to the WAC”

But seriously, you got way too much time on your hands.

And with the ever changing landscape of college athletics, backstabbing, secret meetings, money, money, money, and the fluidity of it all–it would make all that number crunching you did pointless. We saw how in a matter of hours how the “The Project” went to “The $hitter.”

I again apologize if I am being cynical or if I sound sarcastic. I am just telling it how I see it from one fan’s point of view.

  286. d1島 November 14, 2010 6:25 am

    Great Morning All!

  287. d1島 November 14, 2010 6:26 am

    Another interesting idea, Garret.

  288. d1島 November 14, 2010 6:26 am

    Congratulations BasketBows!

  289. Garret November 14, 2010 6:29 am

    CromabUSA,

Most of that information I actually looked up in response to requests from the Hawaii State Legislature. I didn’t realize I had all of that information stored until I looked through the documents yesterday. That made everything much longer than I had originally planned. I *do* not consider any time I spend trying to help UH with the Hawaii Legislature a waste of time, no matter how busy I get.

I *agree* with you that the ever changing landscape of college athletics will make all of the number crunching in that idea pointless after a period of time. I mentioned how there is a very limited window of opportunity for that idea–after that, the ESPN deal with C-USA will be done and this window will be shut.

I *understand* the cynicism and often times I agree with it. However, I figured I should write things from a best-case point of view.

One thing I wanted to make clear in what I wrote is that it seems that UH has been trying to get into the MWC (even offering to join only for football) but the C-USA is actually a much better fit for UH. C-USA having ESPN and letting its schools have their own PPV deals is a perfect fit. Trying to make geographic and monetary sense for that marriage is the hard part…

  290. Garret November 14, 2010 6:29 am

Oops, I was supposed to emphasize *not* instead of *do* in the first paragraph above.

  291. d1島 November 14, 2010 6:34 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  292. LizKauai (iPad) November 14, 2010 6:41 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Have the best dau ever!

  293. LizKauai (iPad) November 14, 2010 6:51 am

To understand what is going on in the WAC, the BCS, and all organizations, one might investigate the fundamental time in which we live. Every so-called institution is in the process of change.

For instance, when Hawaii changed from a monarchy to a provisional govt., many other monarchies underwent radical change and power.was delivered to the people.

We are just now discovering we must properly use it for the betterment of all.

  294. wafan November 14, 2010 7:30 am

    Garret . . .

Good ideas. Now if influential folks would really do something positive in a pro-active manner for a change . . .

  295. oldie November 14, 2010 7:32 am

    Garret,

Have sent your idea to Jim Donovan? If not, you should. As you said, the window of opportunity is small, but anything that may improve UH’s future has to be explored.

Thanks for taking the time to put this idea together.

  296. Pomai November 14, 2010 7:43 am

Garret overall the idea is good, but the hard part would be to convince the remaining WAC presidents to agree with it and getting rid of Benson. It would probably be easier to convince C-USA but not the WAC.

  297. Pomai November 14, 2010 7:48 am

Garret say the deal is done and it’s in place for this season, what would the dollar figures look for each school in the conference(C-USA18) vs what they(WAC) gets today?

  298. Garret November 14, 2010 7:54 am

    Pomai,

C-USA schools get something like 3x the money that WAC schools get. The WAC schools will get less after BSU leaves.

I tried to figure out a way that C-USA schools could get no less than they get now while adding the WAC6. The only way for that to happen is that the WAC6 agree to take less money at the start (but still get more than what they get right now), the Hawaii Bowl increase its payout in 2014 to get Pac-12 teams, and ESPN increases the C-USA TV deal due to the addition of the WAC schools.

However, you are correct that one big flaw is that the WAC6 Presidents seem to be happy with Benson so this will not happen. That is 1 of the 4 biggest flaws in the idea.

  299. Da Punchbowl Kid November 14, 2010 7:55 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great read Garret, good points. Thanks for everything you do on a voluntary basis for UH Athletics and the State of Hawaii.

What do the folks down at legislature think of all o’ this? Or are they still making up their minds?

How much influence does our ole buddy JJ have in the CUSA and would he go for a plan like this?

  300. Garret November 14, 2010 7:57 am

    Oldie,

My last 2 e-mails were not responded to and for all I know the UH spam filter might not like me since my e-mails to others at UH (like Coach Mack) never get responded to either. I know that if I post something here it will get seen by people at UH.

  301. Garret November 14, 2010 7:58 am

BSU jumped over TCU for #3 in the Coaches poll. UH moved up to #34 in the Coaches poll.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/usatpoll.

  302. Garret November 14, 2010 7:59 am

BSU also passed TCU in the AP poll. The media doesn’t like UH like the coaches do…UH did not get a single vote in the AP poll!

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/polls/ap/?eref=sinav

  303. Michigan Warrior November 14, 2010 7:59 am

#260… Kazz… You’d think the camera guys would have been taught that in school at least! I mean, even when we’re taking pictures at home, I remind the wife and kids (whomever is operating the camera) to make sure the background behind their subject is clean and decent. You don’t want to put up pictures in the album, or send it to the grandparents, with the house looking all upside down, even if it is in the kid’s rooms.

Same with video of UH’s sporting events. Camera guys should have enough sense to show the liveliest stuff going on… people all happy and tsaiked out… not all tired, bored and sleepy.

One thing I love so far in these past couple of games… I love how our ‘Bows are playing whistle to whistle now. Sure beats the “oh, we’re behind by 20 with 5 minutes left… time to start playing, guys!” And then burn off the whole shot clock to get that one good shot off. How in the heck were we expecting to catch up? Really! I’m loving this new team!

  304. Garret November 14, 2010 8:02 am

    DPK,

The Legislature has seemed to really be concerned about UH and they seem to want to help. I didn’t run this C-USA idea by them because they have nothing to do with this type of stuff–but the information on TV deals, NCAA basketball money, etc., was relevant for some past discussions with them.

I doubt that JJ has any influence on whether or not this would happen. I’m sure that he’d love to be in the same conference as UH, but that won’t affect whether or not this is feasible.

  305. Da Punchbowl Kid November 14, 2010 8:05 am

    al –

When the broadcast for men BBall began last night, Russell Yamanoha said he he was “in for Jim Leahey”. I presume that means Pops Leahey will be back to call the games. Russell did a super job in calling the game, but I agree, Leahey is missed.

  306. Pomai November 14, 2010 8:05 am

Garret my biggest question of the year is why do they love the guy? What has he done for the WAC or any of the schools who where in the WAC?????

  307. bighilofan2 November 14, 2010 8:06 am

    Good read Garrett.

Jim Donovan, read Garrett’s post please.

“mens’ ” that should read above.

  309. wafan November 14, 2010 8:07 am

Maybe those camera people need to take a basic photography/videography course. To begin, they should look up 10-Tips from a company that used to be the world’s leader in film manufacturing.

  310. bighilofan2 November 14, 2010 8:08 am

    Rainbow Cliff,

howzit. been working with the County against a loser.

glad to know that Mr. Mui did a good one for UH. Go Bows.

    and

    Go Warriors!!!

  311. Pomai November 14, 2010 8:08 am

#305 DPK – I think Yamanoha doesn’t have the voice (pitch) that makes a good play by play man, where as Leahey does, to me it seems Leahey’s voice is easier on the ears.

  312. Da Punchbowl Kid November 14, 2010 8:09 am

    Garret –

Maybe just fer giggles you should show that piece to legislature folks. After all, knowledge is power. I’ll bet you K. Mark Takai would want to see it.

And bighilo likes it too! 😉

  313. oldie November 14, 2010 8:10 am

    Garret,

I wonder if the 800 pound gorrilla (ESPN) would back your plan? The have a lot of influence (money). If it’s in their best interest, they could convince all parties to look at this idea.

Is there someone at ESPN who can help?

  314. Da Punchbowl Kid November 14, 2010 8:11 am

    Pomai,

Not to mention, nobody can dramatize the situation like Pops can! 😆

  315. expat November 14, 2010 8:11 am

  316. Manoa November 14, 2010 8:12 am

Garret, great idea and well thought out.

The key is you focus on the money, TV, bowls, and how to solve the travel and geography issues– what counts and works in the idea of a multiple regionk conference.

Getting a ton of people on the same page is key and demonstrating how EACH of them will benefit if the conference benefits is key.

I hope the right people read this.

  317. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 14, 2010 8:13 am

The landscape at the Legislature -at least in the State Senate – as well as with the upcomig Abercrombie Administration has changed -perhaps most muchly for the betterment of UH with respect to the former and definitely with the latter. Will post details later on today – including information on how and who to contact.

Unfortunately, a key Senate member has changed her mind about what she wants to do so it doesn’t look as if I will be working with her & her staff on anything having to do with education – or any other issue, for the matter. Fortunately, there are others who will be able to step in to some extent.

That’s why the Senate Money Man – Senator David Ige – and the yet-2-b-named committee Higher Education, Judiciary, and Finance Committee Chairs are so important to what will happen next.

The State House is still not organized; the above committee chairs will not be announced until the leadership has been selected.

Will return to this topic later on – I have a MAJOR fundraiser to get ready for which starts at 10:30 am. The details were posted in the moderated #62 above which means you never got a chance to read it so click my name for details of today’s event. We’ll also be servng free coffee & munchies from my favorite local bakery so please come by.

There were plenty of students at last night’s game – and a few even hung around for the Central Michigan/Montana State game. One of the members of the Staidum Authority who sits about ten feet away from us actually caught a tee-shirt during the lower bowl throwing giveaway.

    Back sometime this evening.

  318. Garret November 14, 2010 8:14 am

Four major reasons why the C-USA/WAC6 idea won’t happen:

    1. The WAC Presidents seem to love Karl Benson and won’t want to leave the WAC. Someone would tip off Benson.

    2. The WAC6 are all having budget stress issues (NMSU cutting $3 million from Athletics, etc.), so the 1-2 years of lower funding (they would lose between $500k and $1 million for a year or 2) would make it hard for them.

    3. The window of opportunity is small–the WAC6 Presidents would have to agree quickly to the deal and the WAC6 Presidents don’t seem concerned about athletics enough to devote the time needed to move quickly.

    4. The Commissioner of C-USA is a long-time close friend of the Commissioner of the MWC. I even read a report that seemed to indicate that the C-USA Commissioner himself might have been the one who tipped off the WAC’s “Project”. The C-USA and MWC Commissioners even met over the summer to explore partnership/teaming opportunities. Given that, the C-USA Commissioner would probably tip off the MWC and the plan would be foiled.

If C-USA is really concerned about the WAC moving east and encroaching into their markets, C-USA could just invite La Tech and *end* the WAC as a football conference. The C-USA Commissioner could also tip off the MWC and the MWC could add Utah State or UH and kill the WAC. I think that the fear of that (especially after what happened with The Project) would stop the WAC Presidents from trying this.

  319. Garret November 14, 2010 8:16 am

    WassupDoc,

If the key Senate member is who I think it is, then that is very, very bad news.

  320. Garret November 14, 2010 8:18 am

    Manoa,

Thank you for your comments–I’ve learned a lot from your posts and that helped me try to not miss any of the key issues. I could actually write up something that would mention how each of the 18 schools would benefit from this, but that would be a novel length instead of a mini-novel!

  321. Garret November 14, 2010 8:19 am

Remember when ST and others joked that Nevada must have had a good week of practice to enable them to move up in the rankings during their bye week? Well, it looks like UH went up a lot in the Coaches poll during their bye week…too bad the Hawaii Exemption results in just 1 instead of 2 bye weeks or UH could move up even more!

  322. Michigan Warrior November 14, 2010 8:27 am

We had discussion of possibly creating a new division with C-USA early this year. Problem now is… what do we do with the new schools in football and non-football? Aren’t they already slated to join the WAC? C-USA would help us with exposure on a national scale. That, and big money are what’s driving our boat. If BYU is taking most of our tv time, then we may be forced back to the later middle-of-the-night games again, or play games in the middle of the week more frequently.

If this plan could not go through… Bigger problem would be… how do we get rid of Benson? Like I said, prior to Boise joining the WAC, he really tried to take care of the conference. Once Boise joined, he let the conference fall apart. Everything, to include marketing the conference, just really sucks now. But, if our Presidents don’t see him that way, then how else do we convince them of it? Because, as of now, they seem to be blinded by his dazzling, sparkling, pile of fly attractant.

I’d like to know who, (preferably a current assistant from those big BCS conferences), might want to be our new commissioner?

  323. bighilofan2 November 14, 2010 8:38 am

the bye week helped UH move up in da polls.

maybe JD should schedule alota bye weeks. 😆

  324. bighilofan2 November 14, 2010 8:52 am

    boy o boy

    the truth is…

the bye weeks are the pits for UH fans.

I don’t think there is any such robot. I have no direct experience in trading with robots but I have done lot of research and most of the reliable sources say that robots are not worth it. There have been many scams also where some scammers brought in a robot in the market and literally ran away with people’s money. I would recommend that you stay away from robots. However if you have to them look at FAP Turbo. I am not affiliated with them in any way but found some good press about them when I was doing research.
