Scout scrimmages tomorrow, Wednesday

The Warriors will conduct full-contact scrimmages  — featuring scouts, redshirts and lower-depth-chart players — tomorrow and Wednesday.

There are not enough healthy players to have two full teams, so it will be a scrimmage matching the offense and defense. The format is disappointing because it means there will be no draft. Running back Sterling Jackson and quarterback David Graves were projected as the top picks.

* * * * *

Shane Austin might be the backup quarterback, but he is second to none in toughness.

A few days before the start of the 2009 training camp, Austin suffered deep cuts on his hands when he was knocked from his moped in a hit-and-run accident. Despite the pain, he did not miss any practices.

Last week, according to his mother, Austin, while stuck in traffic on the freeway, was driving  a car that was struck from behind by a truck. His car was totaled. En route by ambulance to the hospital, he called his mother. Austin did not miss any practices, made the trip to Boise, and played in the past Saturday’s game.

“Stone Cold” Shane Austin is a tough S.O.B.

So does Mack lose the kukui nut lei and is the Alex Green mom attending games superstition still in effect?

Shane and his whole family are awesome.

I will not wear my Sugar Bowl Shirt to any more games. Live or televised. I promise.

    Have a great week everyone!

  6. gigi-hawaii November 8, 2010 8:15 am

David wore his 2007 WAC Champ shirt during the BSU game for good luck. Nevah again!

  7. PowderPuff November 8, 2010 8:17 am

Yay for tough guys. Shane’s family was 2 rows in front of us – thanks for being a Warrior, Shane.

ST, thanks for posting the comments from FOX 12’s sports director. I would’ve taken his comments more seriously had he spelled your name correctly at the top. I guess A-joe did a good job of pointing that out. 🙂

  8. Garret November 8, 2010 8:19 am

Shane Austin is a true Warrior. He has shown his good character by working hard and not complaining about playing time, and I loved getting to see his win at SJSU last year.

Liz- I relagated my Sugar Bowl t-shirt for sleeping. Always good for sweet dreams.

  10. Garret November 8, 2010 8:19 am

One part of my plan to help raise revenue and boost recruiting for UH:

The 49ers will be playing in a new stadium in Santa Clara in the near future. That is a PRIME recruiting area for UH and there are are LOT of UH fans in the area (I see some of them every other year at SJSU games).

Whenever a new football stadium opens they need to use it for more than just NFL games to help generate money. The Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium hosts 2 or so college football teams every year, the teams earning $4+ million, and the Redskins stadium hosted BSU/Virginia Tech this year and the teams earned over $3.5 million. The 49ers stadium will be looking to host college football games, and those games will be *events* that will get a lot of media attention and fans will flock to the new stadium.

Let us establish UH as one of the teams that is associated with that stadium! UH can give up 1 home game a year to play a neutral site game at the stadium. UH can contact *Pac-12* teams that will be interested in playing in the Bay Area for recruiting purposes. Remember, with the split in divisions for the Pac-12 there will be 2-4 Pac-12 teams that will not play a game in the Bay Area every year. Those Pac-12 teams will want to play in the Bay Area and UH can provide them with a solution for that!

This is the drawback for UH:

    1. One less home game. Instead of having 7 or 8 home games, UH will have 6 or 7 home games. That is a loss of revenue, but with the difficulty in scheduling UH might be playing a D-IAA team that doesn’t draw many fans anyway.

    2. Increased travel. But we are talking about the BAY AREA, which has easy direct flights from Honolulu. With the WAC6 only having *1* California team and with very few nonconference games in Californai, UH needs more California games or recruiting will be hurt badly.

These are some of the benefits for UH:

    1. HUGE monetary benefits. The going rate for a non-AQ school is between $1.25 million and $1.5 million, but instead of playing at an SEC stadium to earn that money UH will be playing at a neutral site against Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, or Colorado…whichever teams are shut out of Bay Area games due to the way the way the conference schedules their games. By the way, that number could be going up to $2 million with the revenue projections I’ve seen.

    2. Pac-12 school at a neutral site is an attractive matchup that will get significant media attention. Recruits around the country will pay attention to the game, and since it will be designated a *UH* home game, UH will own the TV rights. If UH is indy, that would be worth a couple of millions. If UH is part of the WAC, they can still get $1-2 million like BSU got this year.

    3. Pac-12 schools would love to play a game at 49ers stadium because it would help their Bay Area recruiting and give them a greater national profile. The 2 Pac-12 teams that are shut out of the Bay Area every 2 years will be the perfect targets for UH. The going rate for AQ schools in neutral site games is about $3 million, so they will be getting a HUGE payday that won’t be coming from UH. What Pac-12 school is going to turn down $3 million plus a chance to keep their Bay Area recruiting going?

    4. These are *winnable* games for UH, they aren’t flying to Florida to play at someone else’s home stadium. Winning these types of games is what UH needs to build its credibility. The only way for UH to get respect is to WIN…and we aren’t talking about against D-IAA schools or NMSU, SJSU, etc.

    To summarize:

    1. UH comes out ahead financially.

    2. UH gets a huge recruiting boost.

    3. UH gets to play one division of the Pac-12 on a rotation basis.

*If* either of the LA NFL stadiums are built, UH could target those stadiums also. Maybe those would be better than the 49ers stadium for UH recruiting.

Note: With 2 teams being shut out of the Bay Area for 2-year stretches, UH could play one of those teams (say, Arizona) one year and the other one (say, Arizona State) the other year. Then the next 2-year period 2 other Pac-12 teams will be shut out of the Bay Area and UH could rotate through those teams.

    Ok. HiHo!

  14. Garret November 8, 2010 8:21 am

    Ipu Man,

UH fans and the Pac-12 fans will bring a nice crowd to the stadium. You also have Bay Area football fans that might want to see a game in the stadium but are priced out of 49ers tickets.

TCU played Oregon State at Cowboys’ Stadium this year and they did not come close to filling the stadium. However, the teams together made $4+ million and had a national TV audience and a great forum for recruiting. Oregon State played a “home” game at Cowboys’ Stadium to make money and get a Texas recruiting boost.

  15. Garret November 8, 2010 8:23 am

    expat,

I agree that UH could do neutral site games earlier than when the 49ers stadium opens, but the football schedule is already set and the TV and stadium deals require some lead time.

  16. chopsueyboy November 8, 2010 8:23 am

    Top Twenty!

We’re almost at a point where we’ll finish no worse than second in the WAC.

    Great accomplishment any year.

Sounds like a winnable situation for UH. Maybe you should broach the idea to JD and Mack.

  24. Pomai November 8, 2010 8:41 am

Garret very good idea, as I said in last bog, if done right it would be a killer for both teams, with over 50,000 locals living in Vegas alone we could fill our half of the stadium. Optimum words “done right”, with all this corporate partner stuff they should be able to work out a good deal to make this happen. Example – for those from Hawaii who would like to go to the game have a flight out Friday night land in the morning go to the game catch the next flight to Vegas for three nights then return to Honolulu. Winnah>>>>>>>

  27. Michigan Warrior November 8, 2010 8:46 am

If we could work out a deal like this, and draw enough traveling interest, I would love to revisit the area on an annual basis! I’ve got quite a few retired Army friends in the area, and we could swing down to Monterey for a day of Fort Ord reunions (sorry, A-House… not trying to cause flashbacks, but my time at Ord was mostly enjoyable.)

    Let’s do this, UH!!!

Wow, Shane surely has tough luck on the roads! Be careful, man! Remember, we drive on the “other” side here in the States! Took me a bit to get used to it when I was stationed in Japan.

  28. A-joe November 8, 2010 8:53 am

    Garret- great idea!

Several things with making a deal to play at a neutral site:

-The stadium is going to need financial guarantees.

-Revenues guaranteed to the opponent needs to exceed their normal take in a regular home or away game.

-An attractive TV deal needs to be established. A game with no coverage is going to fail.

A good compliment to a neutral site game is to play a bodybag game against an SEC team beforehand. This will bring in both revenue and exposure for UH on the East Coast.

We shouldn’t fear playing a game because of potentially losing. Instead, we should step up our program to meet such a challenge.

  29. Ipu Man November 8, 2010 9:02 am

Gotta talk to da Man upstairs…

  30. dcwarrior November 8, 2010 9:03 am

WassupDoc re yesterday’s #244 – Can you give a little more concrete advice as to what the fans should do to contact politicians/UH officials to help get them thinking about UH athletics in an integrated way with the rest of the U, instead of the benign neglect athletics now gets?

i.e., who should people email and what should they say?

  31. Ipu Man November 8, 2010 9:04 am

Whatever happened to that “old 49er stadium”?

That had charm, easy to get to, and was NFL.

  32. Ipu Man November 8, 2010 9:14 am

Googled my question and found out they tore down

    the old stadium in S.F.:

Kezar Stadium was demolished in 1989. The Stadium was reconstructed, providing seating for approximately 10,000 spectators.

I like it. I would definitely go to that game.

  34. Pomai November 8, 2010 9:15 am

  35. Pomai November 8, 2010 9:16 am

What made it a neat stadium was that it was in Golden Gate park, right at the begining of the park.

  47. A-House November 8, 2010 10:18 am

    Garret:

your #270 – regardless of current situation, it is important that all coaches have a written plan, based on principles, which can be reviewed at “targeted” intervals or sooner and changed whenever necessary.

Jim D should have the 2 or 3 different palns developed, make changes if necessary, and ready to impliment – all his coaches should be made aware of his plan and its contents as their ‘guide” or “marching orders” on his vision on where UH will be. Yes, things will change, but Jim D needs to be ready.

One must give the BSU President credit for his vision and planning to move BSU from D1-AA to WAC to MWC to BCS status – that’s planning with a purpose!!!!!

  48. A-House November 8, 2010 10:20 am

I sent it over to JD.

  53. al November 8, 2010 10:41 am

    one snap and clear…

speaking of which. june jones’ smu mustangs made it a bit more difficult to make it two years in a row at the hawaii bowl having lost to utep 28-14 this past saturday. with two more games against marshall and east carolina a current win-loss record of 5-5 it could get rough.

the gate would probably be a near sellout if it is smu-hawaii. this game could be dangerous for the losing team’s ego and pride.

the hawaii staff would take a back seat to the june jones led ponies by the press.

maybe we could ask jj to bring back his speakers for this game and blare out the old conch shell and e noa stuff. i sort of miss that…really.

  54. Townieboy November 8, 2010 10:44 am

Garret – stellar idea. I would gladly give up one home game for the fruition of this plan. Plus, I could easily make this an annual trip. How about getting Hawaiian Airlines and Vacations Hawaii to sponsor this game and create a low cost package? They might be in the mood to talk since Southwest is thinking about bringing in low cost airfare to Hawaii.

  55. NCAA November 8, 2010 10:44 am

    Mr. A-House,

If TCU leaves the MWC it will not affect the AQ status for 2012. That’s what I think because I don’t get involved with BCS shebangs. 😆

  56. Townieboy November 8, 2010 10:45 am

Yeah, the e noa chant really gave the stadium a NFL feeling.

  57. al November 8, 2010 10:47 am

i still say we should have kept that conch shell/chanting stuff. it got the crowd ready more than it did for the players and that’s important.

currently, the 5-0 theme gets lost in the din of the fans cheering on as the team runs out of the helmet. i’d play the 5-0 after the entire team is already on the team or after the first score. the band needs to be “miked” up somewhat to make an audible impact as well.

  58. al November 8, 2010 10:53 am

    back to reality…

when the football schedule came out and you perused through the list did you circle your calendar with the intentions that, “that’ll be the day we beat boise” or did you make a subliminal message within your cranium that was one of the losses for this year?

pretty sure the latter is more true than not.

if so, time to move on and enjoy the rest of the four game season that is left. we could make a run of this.

  59. al November 8, 2010 10:56 am

if we do, and it is attainable…

how many teams could say that they won the last ten of their eleven games?

how many teams could say that they start the season next year with a four game win streak?

how many teams could say that they have 11 wins?

  60. NCAA November 8, 2010 10:57 am

When the Hawaii 5-0 theme is being played as the players are entering the field, does the band face in one direction or are they facing both mauka and makai? I can’t remember but it sounds like they are facing one direction therefore giving a muffled sound. Also, when are they going to fix the speaker/audio in the stadium? Not very clear to the ears.

  61. al November 8, 2010 10:57 am

and just how many of you were just hoping we’d get enough wins to get to the hawaii bowl?

if i recall correctly, at the beginning of the year, i know just two people who thought that we could get 9 and even 10 wins this year. one was the big guy, robert k. and another was yours truly.

  62. NCAA November 8, 2010 10:59 am

    Mr. al,

I’ll let you know the answer to your 3 questions after the football season ends.

  63. al November 8, 2010 10:59 am

many of you thought that we would be escorting mack and staff by this juncture.

    right…come on now ralph.

  64. al November 8, 2010 11:00 am

ncaa…two questions. it is always two questions.

when you get the answers please pass them on to the lower campus complex.

  65. Derek November 8, 2010 11:02 am

As the season enfolds you learn certain things about certain teams. Boise St. and TCU are really, really good. Teams like California and Oklahoma are like night and day, good at home and bad on the road. Utah was exposed last Saturday, but that doesn’t mean that they are not a good team. On the contrary TCU is just good, period. Same for Boise St. This is a pretty good UH team and I thought our run defense was pretty good. But, our passing defense wasn’t good, or should I say our pass rush wasn’t good. But, the key of the ball game was our inability to move the ball against Boise St. The pundits keep trying to find a way to down play Boise and TCU, but they are making a mistake. For my money, Boise St. and TCU should and will be playing for the National Championship. A little “birdie” told me this:

This week, Oregon will lose at California and Auburn will lose at home against Georgia. California is undefeated at home and has won in blowout fashion in their home field. Georgia was beaten Auburn 4 straight. Well guess what, after this week there are only 2 undefeated teams left. And that’s TCU and Boise St. Mark my words, the points are very valuable. One thing for sure, it is very hard to go undefeated. Everything will work out in the end. It will be TCU and Boise St. I for one would like to see it and show the BCS they are just a pile of you know what.

For UH, we need to look for pass rushers. We can always use more speed.

Our offensive line did not perform well last Saturday allowing 7 sacks. But, hopefully we learned some stuff and can get better in the next 3 games.

  66. Souljah November 8, 2010 11:02 am

    Al,

I told my brother that if UH doesn’t get at least 10 wins this season it would be a dissapointment…he thought i was insane, but look now!

    Go Warriors!

  67. Garret November 8, 2010 11:03 am

    A-Joe,

I thought I can use my lunch break to respond to your post.

-The stadium is going to need financial guarantees.

I’m not worried about this one because it seems that more and more NFL stadiums are finding that they make big money from neutral site college games. For example, I read that the BSU-Virginia Tech game was largely bankrolled by ESPN, so the ticket revenue, concessions, parking, etc., were just a huge profit for Redskins stadium.

-Revenues guaranteed to the opponent needs to exceed their normal take in a regular home or away game.

For a home-and-home deal, a Pac-12 school gets nothing except a small amount for travel costs (and they give the same amount when UH goes to their stadium, so basically the visiting team gets nothing). Since this would be a “road” game, they normally would just get that $300k or so for travel costs. Instead, they get $2.5 million or more for a “road” game, which tends to exceed what schools like Arizona/Arizona State net on home games.

-An attractive TV deal needs to be established. A game with no coverage is going to fail.

I agree. ESPN has been bankrolling a lot of the neutral site games. UH needs to win enough to attract ESPN. UH playing a Pac-12 team would always attract ESPN–how many UH home games against Pac-10 schools has ESPN not televised? Fox owns the rights to Pac-10 home games, so this is a way for ESPN to get to show Pac-10 teams.

A good compliment to a neutral site game is to play a bodybag game against an SEC team beforehand. This will bring in both revenue and exposure for UH on the East Coast.

We shouldn’t fear playing a game because of potentially losing. Instead, we should step up our program to meet such a challenge.

I agree that UH shouldn’t be afraid to test itself. Winning some of those road games would be the key to earning respect. Beating cupcakes at home will get UH zero respect.

However, I would prefer Big 10 bodybag games over SEC games. Two reasons:

    1. I think that UH can beat a lot of Big 10 teams, even at their stadiums. I think the SEC is a lot stronger than the Big 10.

    2. The Big 10 gets a *lot* more TV money than the SEC, so they pay more for bodybag games. Colorado is getting $1.4 million from a Big 10 team next year and since their TV money is expected to double the projections are that they could be paying $2 million for a home game soon. The years of UH getting Big 10 teams to come to Aloha Stadium without having to go to their stadiums are OVER…$242 million in one year for TV ended that forever. If UH wants to beat a Big 10 team, UH will have to go to their stadium. Since they won’t do home-and-homes with UH (they get no TV money on the games in Hawaii), UH can go to their stadiums and get $1-2 million.

  68. al November 8, 2010 11:03 am

okay, so every remaining game is not going to be easy. you know the same junk feeling you all have right now. get rid of it. fans, coaches, and players all.

get rid of it. we got beat by “superior physicality and preparedness”.

we got to move on, forgive and forget or else we will end up with a losing streak. there is much to play for still. you can’t just show up and win.

and we need to see at least 35k in the stands agains sjsu.

  69. NCAA November 8, 2010 11:05 am

lol, are you bragging Mr. al!

I’m sure there were many who thought the Warriors would have a successful season and a Hawaii bowl invitation. There were even some who predicted an undefeated season. And if they did have an undefeated season they could also write, “How many people thought we would go undefeated!” The bottom line is that the season is already a success in the eyes of many.

    GO WARRIORS!

    Al,

When the season started I thought (and posted) that I thought that UH would win at least 8 regular season games, with 9 games quite likely. The team looks on target for 10-3, which exceeded my expectations (for some reason, I was scared of the Fresno game, but I forgot that UH seems to own Fresno in Fresno).

“how many teams could say that they won the last ten of their eleven games?

how many teams could say that they start the season next year with a four game win streak?

how many teams could say that they have 11 wins?”

    Mr. al,

    I counted three questions. 😆

  75. al November 8, 2010 11:10 am

derek…your forecast could happen. however, methinks that the bcs hierarchy have already set up a plan to exclude boise state and maybe tcu.

i don’t believe the two will play each other in the bcs nat’l championships.

bsu is already being downcast week by week as their bcs rankings continue to dip lower and lower. bcs knows that in all likely hood bsu will win out. but, they have kept their bcs power ratings low and lower. an undefeated bsu will still not have enough points to be the number one or two team in their eyes.

    tcu has a chance though.

  76. al November 8, 2010 11:11 am

bsu could land up as the only undefeated team in the nation and be #1 in the coaches and/or the press poll, but, they will be at best #3 in the bcs rankings.

  77. Garret November 8, 2010 11:12 am

    A-House,

BSU is not changing their mind. What you read was some fans complaining on a message board without the facts of the $2 million increased revenue and lower travel costs. BSU also at least will control its destiny in the MWC since right now the MWC champion is above the WAC champion and an undefeated WAC team needs luck to make a BCS game.

In the WAC, BSU gets $3 million if they make a BCS game and they have to pay their travel costs (team, band, etc.) out of that. They make MORE money by being last place in the MWC (which will never happen) than they would going to a BCS bowl in the WAC.

In the MWC, BSU would get to keep $5 million of the BCS money instead of $3 million. Instead of making $1 million in profit from a BCS bowl, they would make $3 million…3x profit for a BCS bowl.

ESPN still is in love with BSU and is bankrolling nonconference games and is getting BSU on 2-4 times per season. Put it this way, BSU will be on ESPN more as a MWC member than most WAC teams.

  78. al November 8, 2010 11:13 am

realistically bsu at best at #5 for the bcs. they’ll play in a bcs bowl agains a formidable opponent hopefully the big ten or sec champs. then they will kick their butts all over the place just to prove a point.

  79. NCAA November 8, 2010 11:15 am

If TCU and Boise St. end up being the top 2 teams in the BCS standings don’t they get to play in the BCS National Championship game?

  80. al November 8, 2010 11:16 am

ncaa…al always says two but its three. at least you were sharp enough to pick that up. but, the oldtimers know two means three.

    bumbye you learn.

  81. Michigan Warrior November 8, 2010 11:17 am

#61… Al… In summer emails back and forth between myself and Mr. A-House, thinking that our defense would be our early strength, and only mainly worrying about our O-Line, we both agreed that we might have enough magic on this team to make it to a January Bowl Game. This was before the experts, coaches, and media said that we’d finish 7th, (5th at best). It was just a feeling that we had of the team’s chemistry.

This late into the season, it’s great to see that we still have a chance at 11 wins. No shame in any of it. Can’t imagine how much stronger we might be at the moment if we had actually won the USC and Colorado games. Sometimes, the mental edge you get from games like those go a long way. Still a great season so far, with more to accomplish. We need to finish on a roll and close out strong.

  82. al November 8, 2010 11:17 am

ncaa…yah if they get to the top two positions of the bcs rankings, but, it will never, ever happen…trust me.

  83. Old Diver November 8, 2010 11:18 am

Thinking about the future, ok maybe just next week, the team I would not like to be is SJSU. Some team named the Warriors is pretty P.O.ed at their performance and is ready to explode into the last quarter of the season. Did I say last quarter? Season’s almost over? I’m starting to get depressed again.

  84. al November 8, 2010 11:19 am

many felt we would get to the hawaii bowl,..few thought we’d get double digit wins.

so its been great so far…let’s finish on a high note.

  85. NCAA November 8, 2010 11:20 am

  88. al November 8, 2010 11:27 am

we can now appreciate “the win” at the aloha during our 2007 bcs run against boise state. my chicken skin has not yet subsided. i don’t think there has been a louder, raucous, and vociferous obnoxious crowd ever. it was amazing.

even the elder couple stayed put until the final gun chosing to for once watch the exciting end to the most exciting game ever rather than beating the traffic out of the parking lot.

  89. madeinhawaii November 8, 2010 11:29 am

Heck… I didn’t think we’d even get close to being ranked this season when it started… I thought 8 for sure, 9 wins if we were lucky, 10 if the chips really fell our way. Now I’m still thinking 11 and would be disappointed if we don’t get that number.

The season is better than anticipated. The team has played beyond initial expectations. The coaches, too. Better still, we have 4 more great games to go!

    Warriors IMUA!!

  90. al November 8, 2010 11:32 am

    ncaa…you follow well afterall.

the idaho game, well, we were made prohibitive favorites after weeks of undervaluing our team (in vegas). i felt that now we may have been overvalued. so laying caution to the wind, did you notice i made no comment on this one?

same, with bsu. in my heart i wanted us to win. my emotions felt we could beat these guys. but, again you didn’t hear a peep from me regarding “for entertainment purposes”. that opening line was so high, it actually told me that the “line” realizes just how good bsu really is. so rather than go against the home team, it is better to say nothing.

TCU’s AD says they will be a full conference member or they aren’t changing conferences. So, all that speculation about the WAC getting TCU’s non-football sports is over.

TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte said Sunday he has little interest in placing his football program in one conference and the school’s other varsity sports in another.

“We’re an athletic department,” he said in a telephone interview with Sporting News. “Whatever endeavor we do, you’re united as one. That’s who we are. That’s how we always compete. We compete as one unit.”

Yes, David kept commenting about how well Alex was kicking.

  95. Garret November 8, 2010 11:39 am

This also makes TCU more likely to stay in the MWC, as Central Florida, Navy, and other schools are willing to join them for football only.

  96. al November 8, 2010 11:40 am

yah, dunnachie had a great game.

in fact a very stellar job.

nine punts that averaged 44 yards per punt (in spite of being told to kick it away or out of bounds)

zero, as in puka, return yards.

    that is awesome.

  97. al November 8, 2010 11:41 am

that was an artistic job of punting compared to the boise state punter who averaged 0.0 yards per kick.

    Howzit Everyone,

    Al #58,

For me, it was the latter thus the reason I am over this lose. Boise at this moment is at another level and Hawaii is still trying to build to that level. I feel that with a couple more solid seasons like this one Hawaii will be able to challenge teams like Boise but until then I will just have the live with this outcome.

But I will say I did not think the game would be this lopsided. I was hoping that Hawaii would challenge more than they did but thats what happens when you are not at your best and you challenge a team at there best.

OMG… the news just showed a Texas middle school football team pull off the ultimate trick play.

Setup: The defense had just been flagged for a penalty, and yardage was marked off.

Next, the QB yells to the sideline and acts like he needs to mark off an additional five yards. Everyone is lined up on offense. The center gives the ball to the QB, who then tells the defense he needs to mark off five more yards. Once pass the “box”, the QB takes off on a long run, scoring a TD!

Hahaha! Unreal! Probably end up on You Tube eventually. Unreal!

NSF – I will find out and post here.

  127. NCAA November 8, 2010 1:27 pm

    Mr. NorthShoreFan,

I can see why some in Kahuku feel they should seek every avenue to have their team continue their post season. Many would do the same thing if they were in Kahuku’s shoes.

I for one would have to agree with the OIA in their decision, but then again I am not a judge and we’ll see if the judge sees it OIA’s way or he sees it differently by his interpretation of the OIA bylaws. We shall see.

  128. Pomai November 8, 2010 1:33 pm

It’s not the kids in Kahuku who are suing it’s the parents, all this does is teach the kids that if they break the rules just sue to get around them. I agree it is a hard penalty but life give you some of those.. Lesson learned for the kids, just like we have said on this blog many of times “get your all ducks lined up in a row”.

  129. NCAA November 8, 2010 1:38 pm

    Pomai,

Some players are named as co-plaintiffs. We have a right to go to court. If not then why have the Judiciary. But like I said, I would have to agree with the OIA.

  130. NCAA November 8, 2010 1:41 pm

That was a cruel trick play. Would have been funny if the defender stripped the ball from the QB and the ball went through the endzone.

  131. madeinhawaii November 8, 2010 1:44 pm

Wonder if the kids gotta prove they didn’t know anything about the guy in his 5th year.

You mean, none of the 4th year seniors had a clue, too?

    Egads!

  132. Pomai November 8, 2010 1:44 pm

NCAA you are correct but it is still the parents who are behind this. Not saying the kids don’t have a right to go to court, but this is still sending the wrong message to kids.

Hmmmmmmm, very interesting. You know what I was thinking????? Oh never mind.

  135. Derek November 8, 2010 1:56 pm

It is hard for me to believe that if Boise and TCU are the only undefeated teams that they aren’t #1 and #2. The Harris Poll and Coaches Poll (USA Today) will likely have both of them either 1 or 2. That’s 2/3 of the BCS equation. The computer ranking will probably have Boise St. and TCU no worse than 4th, probably higher. So, let’s take this scenario if Boise and TCU are the only undefeated teams.

TCU – either 1 and 2 in both polls and from 2 to 3 in the computer ranking.

BSU – either 1 and 2 in both polls and from 2 to 4 in the computer.

Auburn – let’s say 3 or 4 in both polls and 2 in the computer.

Oregon – let’s say 3 or 4 in both polls and 2 in the computer.

LSU – same scenaro as Auburn or Oregon.

Looking at this, you would be hard pressed to have any team leap frog over either TCU or Boise St. In fact, there is almost no way you can deny these 2 great teams play for the National Championship assuming they are the only undefeated teams at the end of the regular reason. I will go on record that Oregon will lose to either Cal, Arizona, or Oregon State and Auburn lose to either Georgia or Alabama. In fact, even if Auburn beat Georgia and Alabama, they could still lose to either S. Carolina or Florida in the SEC championship game. It is just to dang hard to go undefeated.

  136. NCAA November 8, 2010 1:58 pm

    Mr. Pride,

What were/was you thinking? I’m interested.

I don’t think the Cowboys would enjoy living and breathing the weight room ethic. 😆

  137. NorthShoreFan November 8, 2010 2:02 pm

Mahalos Pomai…should be a fun game to watch…

Ncaa…ditto here but then again, you try everything you can to get things “right” and if not then you tried your best. That’s one thing athletics teach you..it ain’t over till it’s over. The thing that impressed me is how the kids are responding. Lots of hugs and solidarity amongst the team. They definitely will come out stronger because of this experience. The other lesson…do it right the first time….

  138. Pomai November 8, 2010 2:04 pm

A one loss SEC champ would be in the BCS National Championship Trust WAAAYYYY before and undefeated Boise State and I was SCREAMING this when the pre season polls came out.

BCS makes it’s own rules to change and conform to further help the big rich boys.

TCU has a small chance in hell to creep through a “loophole” in their system and if they do and forbid they win the BCS National Championship Trust, the rules will tighten again to make sure no midmajor ever has a chance in hell… like they way the snobs and the college sports “capitalists” wanted in the first place.

The marching band is not lined up in two rows like you see at other schools. Ours is bunched together and facing the Makai sideline and one the last verse of Hawaii Five O, they band, in unison, makes a 180-degree turn and faces the Mauka sideline.

Our marching band consists of under 300 people, most big bands are slightly above 400 people. Now, when people watch teams run out to their fight song being played by the marching band on the field, they think that the band is loud enough to be heard over the roaring crowds at places like Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc… People forget that when they see and hear this on TV, the band is mic’d up as well as the cameras that are at field level.

When you are in the crowd, it’s HARD to hear the marching band playing, regardless of size, ESPECIALLY when the team runs out to a roaring crowd.

It just sounds and looks good on TV.

I tell you one thing though, in college, the marching band SHOULD BE AT THE CENTER OF THE COLLEGE GAME DAY ATMOSPHERE. THEY SHOULD BE ON THE FIELD TO PLAY THE HOME TEAM OUT…

The piped in studio recorded music should be left alone to the pros and their cookie cutter/manufactured for sale aura.

#63 Al I wouldn’t go nuts and give a long term extension, yes we are winning but we need to be consistent winners. A 7-7, 6-7, and we can win possibly 10 or 11 games this season but we got to do it. Why, we lost to a USC team having a mediocre year, a Colorado team whose fans want to fire their coach, and we just got humiliated by Boise State. If Nevada can hold its ranking than we have one quality win against a notable team this season. Fresno is struggling.

We got to win to increase our fan base at home, otherwise we can expect 30K+, and we got to do it consistently. Otherwise the fans will go to a HS game, it is just as entertaining and it is cheaper. During the Von Appen years I went to soccer games, a club sport that was competitve, so I never made it to Aloha stadium. Some parents left after the game to catch the football game, but I stayed for the pot luck and watched the next game on the field. Fuud and sports, I got both without going to Aloha stadium.

    mctruck,

The Big 12 owns ALL of the Texas TV market. Adding TCU doesn’t bring anymore TV money and does not add a market because Texas and Oklahoma already own the Dallas/Fort Worth TV market. Texas A&M and Texas Tech even have more fans in DFW than TCU. So, adding any Texas team makes no sense. TCU couldn’t come close to selling out the Cowboys stadium for a game against Oregon State…Texas would have all tickets sold with scalpers making a ton of money.

The Big 12 needs new TV markets. They can add Utah by grabbing BYU. Colorado State doesn’t bring much of the Colorado market…if losing Colorado actually earned the rest of the Big 12 schools more TV money, adding Colorado State would *drop* their TV money per school.

The home run for the Big 12 would be to add Notre Dame and Arkansas. Notre Dame can keep their NBC contract (minus 2 or so games) and get $15-20 million from the Big 12 TV contract. Arkansas can get more TV money in the Big 12 *and* get back into the Texas recruiting market…Arkansas really went downhill after their Texas recruiting pipeline dried up.

Assuming that Arkansas is too entwined in the SEC, the Big 12 seems to want BYU next. BYU can keep its local TV deal and keep BYUTV, and even sell games to ESPN while still being a conference member. The Pac-12 and Big 10 does *not* give its schools their TV rights…the Big 12 does and matches the SEC for TV money. The Big 12 would be the home run for BYU…there is a reason why BYU scheduled Texas and Oklahoma and has been showing Texas how to set up a TV network.

Nice to see what this site thinks of Bess.

Davone Bess: Grade A Normally when a player is awarded a contract in mid-season he flops. Not so with Davone Bess who has not only impressed the Miami fan base but is gaining national recognition as well. Bess has developed the one thing he has lacked since the day he got here. YAC. The addition of Brandon Marshall has taught Bess how to turn his body and get more yards. He is becoming a legitimate go to threat that defenses need to account for.

And from what scraps I’ve been able to put together, I’m reasonably confident we’re going to have a resolution — i.e., UTSA and Texas State joining the Western Athletic Conference — in the very near future.

I was thinking along the lines of Friday. But the last time UTSA went in front of the UT System Board of Regents on a football platform, in December of 2008, an announcement was made the very same afternoon the program was approved.

In this case, the meeting in question is on Thursday.

the same time Russ Francis played tight end?

  244. Steve November 8, 2010 6:01 pm

    Chopsueyboy,

Russ Francis played tight end while at Kailua High?

  245. Michigan Warrior November 8, 2010 6:03 pm

For some reason, Richard Wong sounds familiar, but I don’t know why. Might have heard the name or read it in the paper or something, but not sure. Gotta remember, I went to school at Campbell too… kinda like the opposite side of da island from Kailua side.

Think you guys will like Hawaii Five-0 tonight. It was good. Seems that silver Camaro now belongs to Danno. Glad that they closed the loop on an earlier loose end from one of the earlier shows. So, we see that the writers are kinda paying attention to what they’re doing.

By the way, one of my brothers and a cousin from Pearl City went to Pearl City HS with Jason Scott Lee. They used to hang out together and irritate the heck out of me until I joined the Army.

  246. chopsueyboy November 8, 2010 6:21 pm

    steve

    pretty sure

cousin Richard talked about playing against him in practice

we used to play street football in Kailua when I was very little

and couldn’t throw over Russ or my cousin

Russ Francis played QB his Sr. year. He later claimed he could throw the ball end zone to end zone. Said his only disappointment was being beaten out for 1st team OIA by a 5 foot 5 inch QB from Kaimuki, think his name was Joe Wong.

Like Stevens attitude of talking to other top players in Cali about UH.

This adds much weight to Garret’s idea of UH using the new 49er stadium for a home game. UH can also bring in recruits for other sports. What a winner for UH.

Jim D hope you take serious consideration to what Garret is proposing. It is a win, win situation for UHAD!!!!!!

    A-House,

Something of that magnitude sounds like something that people ABOVE Jim Donovan would have the final say in.

  258. Steve November 8, 2010 7:07 pm

    Chopsueyboy,

From what I can remember Russ Francis played QB for the Surfriders, at least his Senior year.

    Watch him play in 70-71.

    Cocobean,

I would not dought he could throw a football endzone to endzone. I saw him throw a football against Roosevelt, 85 yards, with 2 defenders holding on to him.

  259. Steve November 8, 2010 7:08 pm

    Cocobean,

If I am not mistaken, the Kaimuki QB was Joe Story.

  260. Pride. November 8, 2010 7:41 pm

Interesting reading about Cowboy players who really liked Wade Phillips, and said that they played hard for him. I don’t remember that many players saying that they loved playing for Bill Parcells. In fact a lot of them considered him an A-hole.

As a coach, would you rather be a winning coach or would you rather have people like you? Don’t answer too quickly now, think about it a little. Lonely head coaches just like lonely CEO’s don’t have many firends.

    Cocobean,

If I am not mistaken, the Kaimuki QB was Joe Story.

Didn’t Joe Story play for Kalani? Way before he went to the Olympics. I remember a Joe Lee that played for Kaimuki. My dad used to take me to all of the Kaimuki games at the Honolulu Stadium, thinking that i might develop an interest in football. Didn’t work. After years of going to the old stadium I still enjoyed the song leaders, hot dogs, and Coke, more than the football games.

  262. momona November 8, 2010 7:46 pm

Joe Lee, I’m glad someone’s memory is a lot better than mine. My kid bro played with Joe Story at Kalani, another name from the past.

Wasn’t Francis a track wiz also?

Nicaragua invaded Costa Rica, took down a Costa Rican flag and raise their own flag on Costa Rican turf last week. However, this was not really an invasion because Google Maps mistakenly said that the territory belonged to Nicaragua…now there is a huge international incident and Costa Rica is understandable upset and embarrassed at being invaded:

Maybe the idea of using the 49er stadium is above Jim D’s level, but it sure don’t hurt to get a proposal in front of Chancellor Hinshaw for consideration listing the positive and negative points.

Did MC Greenwood say that she has delegated all the athlectics to Hinshaw or did I hear/read wrong. Besides, it would also be a good venue to promote UH academics for all those high schoolers interested in UH multi-national and international programs – astronomy, marine biology, agriculture, etc.

And, it would be a terrific opportunity for all fans, alumni, and former residents to meet/greet each other and build support. If very successful, other schools may “copy cat”, but more important exhibit to TV people that there are many loyal UH fans all along the West Coast who would/can be counted as Warrior football viewers?

Opportunities abound – just gotta take the leap of faith – may take more than one game, but worth a try!!!!!!!!! Especially if Jim D can get a big time BCS school to commit to the game – half way from the East Cost is better that all the way!!

little joe story was barely 5’5″ and no one could catch him. he was that fast. was an allstar running back at kalani. he also played on our intramural flag fb team at manoa along with gary campbell while they were still in high school. hahaha. no one checked the rosters and we beat the pants off some fraternity perennial champions. hahaha.

Just questioning if eBay enables you to sell concert tickets on the web? Do you know if there are any restrictions based on what country you’re in?

My parents have just called me and asked if i could “get rid” of their two tickets to some concert as they wont be able to make it due to yet another family event.

Besides asking pals etc, i thought ebay would be a good place to market them.

But whats ebay’s policy on selling tickets? Ive heard alot about it for the news but ive forgotten what happened.

and if it matters, the concert is within this coming month

Thanks ahead of time for the advice.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
