One away

The Warriors finished a walk-through practice, then departed for a Waikiki hotel, where they will attend meetings late into the night. And, for those wondering, there’s a curfew and players are not permitted to leave the hotel.

Here are Brian Clay Jr. and Brian Clay Sr.

    Bummer, but top 10 anyway.

  9. Buffoman September 2, 2011 8:18 am

Would one say that the o-line is still the question mark in the grand scheme of things? Nothing negative, just that there are a bunch of untested folks there.

It appears the S-A has a new site for all of its UH sports stories.

  13. d1shima September 2, 2011 8:21 am

Can’t say enough about pre-game preparation. Evidence Wisconsin’s demolition of UNLV yesterday. Very few mistakes, penalties, miscues…

Result: 5 TD margin of victory.

Good morning Tsai-Kos! Good morning ST!

  19. haka September 2, 2011 8:25 am

I think the announcers mentioned that Wisconsin was the fewest penalized team last year and the defense was penalized only 8 times ALL season.

  20. Bugaz September 2, 2011 8:27 am

Good job by the Wahine last night. Hana hou tonight and the rest of the season!

  21. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2011 8:32 am

I’m curious to see how these guys are going to play.

I think the line will be fine, but you never know. That’s why they play the games.

  22. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2011 8:33 am

That was such a tough opener for UNLV — on the road, in that crazy environment.

It’s tough enough to play a home game against Wisconsin, Badger fans travel well, and loudly.

  23. Wes'side Warrior September 2, 2011 8:34 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Happy birthday to da birthday peoplez!

    It’s time to play!!!

    Let’s go, Warriors!!!

  24. Bowwar September 2, 2011 8:37 am

Top 25 —- Can’t believe they can’t make a decision on the placekicker…Shows a lack of confidence on Hadden in my opinion, which isn’t good.

I hope we have alot of okoles in the seats for tomorrow’s game and support our Warriors.

I think watching Harding field kick-offs and punts are worth the price of admission alone. People forget that this guy is a demigod in Australian PRO football, so he knows how to play in front of BIG crowds and with the game on the line. I hope Harding takes one to the House.

  27. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2011 8:41 am

    Bowwar:

    They like Hadden.

But Chun is tough to eliminate. He’s very accurate.

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 2, 2011 8:42 am

UNLV had some high points…the score doesn’t show it, but they did move the ball well at times against a pretty good Wizzy D.

  29. MattyBoy September 2, 2011 8:47 am

    ST,

You don’t sound to sure about the line there?

  30. CoolEthan September 2, 2011 8:48 am

Which combo of info did Bodog utilize to come up with those odds?

  31. MattyBoy September 2, 2011 8:49 am

And also ST, you think our offense will be game-time ready? How do you think they’ll pan out?

  32. CoolEthan September 2, 2011 8:49 am

I agree with the announcers of the Wisc. game.

Badgers defense only showed minimal vanilla for this game.

No need show your full hand this early

Mack and Glanville were like that with their defense.

The new site is really good–it is great to have all of the UH stuff together.

  37. Garret September 2, 2011 9:13 am

I echo the concern about not being able to choose between the kickers. However, ST’s comment makes it seem like that they cannot choose because both are good so that is good. I guess that the Warriors have depth at kicker, not something that many teams have.

  38. Kekoa September 2, 2011 9:15 am

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

Can’t wait to see Mr. Harding take it to da hale!

  39. Garret September 2, 2011 9:17 am

SI’s Mandel predicts that BYU will win their first 11 games, including games at Mississippi, at Texas, at Oregon State, Utah at home, and TCU at Cowboys Stadium…and then LOSE to UH. If BYU is 11-0 and ranked in the top 5 in the country (their schedule would get them there if they won those 11), Aloha Stadium would definitely be sold out and rocking.

Nice respect shown for UH that SI would predict that BYU could beat Miss, Texas, Oregon State, TCU, and Utah and then lose to UH.

Newly independent BYU will storm up the rankings after opening the season with wins at Ole Miss, at Texas and against Utah. The Cougars will head into the final week with a BCS at-large shot before falling at Hawaii.

    Howzit Tsai-ko Nation!!

The lurking is good here in sunny Waimea! Hoping for similar weather tomorrow afternoon in Halawa. Wish I could be there in person, but I’ll be cheering at the TV instead.

I watched parts of the UNLV-UW game yesterday – the Badgers looked like a team in a different league (pun intended), more in-sync and a couple of steps faster than the Runnin’ Rebels.

I’m confident that the Warriors will display similar dominance against the Buffaloes, especially with all the Tsai-ko support in the stands!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  42. Slugger September 2, 2011 9:29 am

    Happy birthday, Mrs. MIH!

  43. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 9:31 am

Wonder if Colorado got to practice yesterday in the high humidity?

  44. Unkanesson September 2, 2011 9:33 am

Garrett #40 — Thanks for the SI report. As we all know, there is precedent for that scenario, the Cougars sauntering into Aloha Stadium undefeated and slinking out with their tails between their legs. The SI article will no doubt be used as bulletin board material in the BYU locker room — let’s hope the Warriors can cause history to repeat itself in spite of it!

  45. koakane ip4 September 2, 2011 9:36 am

    morning tsaiko’s and tsaikette’s

  46. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 9:36 am

We can only hope that the Warriors will be undefeated going into the Stadium against BYU… what a match up that would be then, eh?

Two undefeated teams in the rust bucket… eyes of the nation… Vili… snow cones… “Aloha Plumbing” or something like that on a banner somewhere on the sidelines… At least the turf will be new.

  47. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 9:37 am

BUT our Warriors face off against Colorado tomorrow… a preview perhaps of the games to come.. two UNDEFEATED teams squaring off in the old rust bucket.

Too bad the REAL humidity doesn’t arrive until Sunday. Light trade-winds though do make it hotter, but would love to have some Kona winds for the Buffs today and especially tomorrow.

We’ll be hot too, but we won’t be “dying” in it.

  51. Slugger September 2, 2011 9:57 am

    sj-macro,

Took my car to see Warren in Manoa. He said he’d see you tonight.

On the way out of my driveway this morning, there was an HPD officer with a city medical examiner van parked to the side. Looked like a body under a yellow tarp between two vehicles. So sorry for that soul. [Your Breaking News on the Warrior Beat blog.]

  54. UHfan808 September 2, 2011 10:20 am

Happy birthday Lopaka and Mrs. MIH!!

Nice new S-A site, ST! — Thank you for the heads up DPK and d1!

  55. Derek September 2, 2011 10:21 am

In the perfect world, BYU will be undefeated at 11-0 when they play Hawaii and Hawaii will be 12-0 when they play BYU on December 3. Somebody will win. As Bob Hogue used to say when UH played BYU, “Who will win the game?” Hawaii, “YOU GOTTA BELIEVE”!

First things first, we take care of Colorado first, when we worry about the Huskies which I will be at that game. Ironically, the last time I saw the Huskies play in Seattle was when they played tomorrow’s opponents for UH, Colorado in 1999. Rick Neuheisal was the UW coach and Gary Barnett was the Colorado coach. UW w/ Marques Tuiasosopo won that game, I think it was 31-24 and it was quite exciting. I remember that a Colorado kick returner was terrific in that game.

I was pretty impressed w/ UNLV’s offense yesterday against Wisconsin. They ran the ball quite well especailly in the perimiter. Not sure how good Wisconsin’s defense is. Unfortunately for UNLV their defense could not stop Russell Wilson. When he was playing Wisconsin scored on every possession. That’s a pretty good Wisconsin offerense with 2 excellent running backs in Montee Ball and James White.

  56. Midnight September 2, 2011 10:28 am

Happy birthday Lopaka43! Geeve ’em on Sunday!

    Happy Birthday Mrs. MIH!

    Go Warriors! Pulehu da Buffalos!

  57. d1shima September 2, 2011 10:41 am

UNLV did some things well yesterday. Their QB is an athlete.

The difference (34 points ) was largely due to Wisc playing like they were in mid-season form as far as the lack of “shoot-yourself-in-the-foot” lapses vice the Rebels who were doing the “1 step forward, 2 steps back” dance.

Hopefully, Hawaii’s more stable coaching staff can direct their charges to a similar start tomorrow instead of the Buffs’ brand new staff can do theirs.

  58. A-House September 2, 2011 10:53 am

Happy Birfday to Lopaka and Mrs MIH!!

  59. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 10:55 am

Wonder what Buffalo pipikaula would be like? Low fat and all…

  60. Slugger September 2, 2011 10:59 am

    Hey, UHFan808! See you tomorrow!

  61. A-House September 2, 2011 11:01 am

    Kevin:

I watched Keiko’s video and saw 1) her playing just infront of the 3 base bag and to upright – she needs to experience US ball where the player is just shy of 1/2 way to home plate and at a full bend at the waist; 2) at SS, she has to learn “binding” more at the waist; and 3) she has a smoooth, level swing, but she won’t see the slow pitches in a real game as she did in the batting cage.

There was no footage of her playing 1B.

Wonder how tall she is? She looks to be in the 5’8″ range.

It’s nice to have her walk-on the the Na Wahine SB team. 2nd female from Japan to try collegiate sports at UH. Mai Ayabe broke the barrier when she walked- on to the Wahine BB team 3 years ago.

Hopefully this will be the start of Far East student athletes coming to Hawaii for college.

  62. bigislandkurt September 2, 2011 11:05 am

We now have bigger, faster, stronger, albeit YOUNGER linemen. Sila and Faaumu and Clayton offer an older presence. The youngstas might be nervous as heck, but I think they gonna do alright. From the moment Shigematsu signed, I hoped to see him as one of our tackles. Here we go! If Shaw feels good about these guys, I feel good about these guys.

    BIK

  63. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 11:22 am

  64. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 11:24 am

Is 6’4″ USC Women’s VB player, Falyn Fonoimoana, joining the Wahine next season?

  65. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 11:29 am

And if the name, Falyn Fonoimoana, sounds familiar, Fonoimoana is currently dating Siaki Cravens a DE for the University of Hawaii football team. Due to academics, Falyn has been declared ineligible to play for 2011 at USC… I guess that makes it a redshirt year for her? Hopefully her grades will be in order when she gets here.

    http://frathousesports.com/falyn-fonoimoana-2011-photo-gallery-pictures/

  66. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 11:31 am

Oh shoots!.. Never mind… found the Staradvertiser article on Falyn…

    http://blogs.starbulletin.com/uhsportsextra/falyn-fonoimoana/

must have missed it.. I guess I should get a subscription, eh? Soon as I get paid for painting two houses this past month.

  67. Kevin September 2, 2011 11:36 am

    A-House,

Too early, still unfamiliar with the walk-ons at this point. There appears to be another walk-on, Stacy Elizabeth from Texas (out of HS, not a transfer), another infielder. But not sure if Sugihara is acutally a Japanese national like Ayabe. Far from Illinois for sure, given her chosen academic field of environmental studies, UH Manoa obviously drew her attention.

In that article I posted yesterday, was hoping to see some pitching footage considering she made some noise for her squad there.

As for her height, hard to say, have not seen her in person. But in that youtube video she does appear to be about 5’7″-5’8″, maybe 5’6″ at the least but I’d guess 5’8″. when standing next to the bag at 3rd and at the end during BP.

  68. Kevin September 2, 2011 11:40 am

    A-House,

Don’t think she’ll play or compete for 1st.

We have A LOT of potential 1st base players to compete for that spot as it is, Iwata is pretty much locked at SS, but a good amount of potential back-ups as well, it’s 3rd base that is thinnest compared to the rest as far as bodies to compete for it.

  69. Garret September 2, 2011 11:40 am

It appears that Texas A&M doesn’t have an invitation to the SEC yet. They may be asked to wait until the SEC has a 14th team. The quotes are from Arkansas chancellor David Gearhart.

The first thing Gearhart said was that, as far as he knew, the whole thing remains “up in the air” because he hadn’t been notified of any SEC meetings or votes in regard to adding Texas A&M.

“They notified their conference that they want out,” Gearhart said about the Aggies. “And they’ve made no bones about the fact they want to come to the SEC. But I don’t think … well, I know … there hasn’t been an invitation. I think that remains to be seen. There’s not any meetings scheduled at this point.

“Of course there could be a called meeting at some point. But right now, I don’t have anything on my calendar so I think it’s just wait and see at this point.”

“It could be done with 13, but it would be so much easier to go to 14,” Gearhart said. “Who that would be hasn’t even been openly discussed.”

We have a few, maybe less than a handful I know of off-hand, well ok one or three maybe.

Recently and most known was Douglas Kurtz and I think a few on the women’s sports I saw in passing when looking at all the sports rosters about a year ago.

    Kevin…

Currently we have three from Australia and NZ on the football team, alone. Unfortunately, I don’t see any others on the other teams. We used to have a couple in Softball… Didn’t we have one or two in Women’s BB back when?

Maybe UH needs to place a little more emphasis in recruiting those areas to boost our TV market value?

  78. RedZone September 2, 2011 12:00 pm

Having a dine that was 50 lbs lighter per man than wisconsins oline didn’t help. UNLVs dine had hands on hips and was breathing hard. And it was early in the 2nd quarter.

Idaho had the same problem with Bowling Green. BG won trench warfare and there was very little Idaho could do after that.

Colorado game will be won in the trenches.

IIRC, most of the men and women players from South America have played for BYU-Hawaii; at least in basketball and volleyball.

Badgers had the Rebels on their heels from their opening drive so it doesn’t seem like an endurance issue.

The Rebels didn’t respond because of their mistakes.

TCU was getting punched in the mouth big time in the beginning of the Rose Bowl but hung in with great execution and not hurting themselves and eventually won the game.

  86. d1shima September 2, 2011 12:16 pm

It was obvious the UNLV was way outta their league but my point is that I hope the coaches get the Hawaii players ready from the opening kick tomorrow to eliminate the self-inflicted wounds.

As Ahouse said, the Rainbow Wahine has seen their share of talented Aussie in the past. Stacey Porter, Brooke Wilkins, Kelly Gentle, Justine Smethurst, Clare Warwick, etc..

More and more BCS level programs are starting to exploit the Land Downunder as well so Coolen’s competition is increasing down there. Recently Oklahoma State picked up a pretty good player.

  90. Rasu Begasu September 2, 2011 12:22 pm

    MIH,

    Just my opinion

UH should not be actively recruiting from foreign countries

just to possibly raise the “TV maket value” whatever that means.

All “minor” sports at UH should focus on local scholar/atheletes.

    1. Save money on recruiting trips

    2. Local Team + Local Kids = Better Local Attendance and Attention

    3. This is 2011, with the exception of Samoa, I doubt that any other

countries in the Pacific Rim would care about a couple or half dozen

atheletes who were/are not good enough to make the national or

junior national teams in their respective sports

    .

The only exception to this policy should be the Football program

which would benefit since there would be no other Div 1 program

    in the Asia/Pac rim area

  91. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 12:26 pm

    Rasu,

Without a substantial TV market base, UH will always be the last picked player on anyone’s “team.” The larger our market value outside of Hawaii, the more attractive we will look to other conferences, even to the MWC (which may lend to UH renegotiating their subsidy agreements in the future). The larger the TV market value of each team determines how much money they can get from the sponsoring network. For Hawaii to get to the “next” level, it needs a bigger market base and that’s not going to happen by making more babies in Hawaii.

  92. Kevin September 2, 2011 12:29 pm

Picking up Kaia Parnaby was so big for maintaining that relationship with Australia.

Her experience at international play and overall ability showed we can still grab some of the best that continent has to offer.

  93. Rasu Begasu September 2, 2011 12:34 pm

    Re: UNLV

In spite of the blowout last night UNLV had a few high points

The offense looked solid at times and the QB has quickness that you cannot teach.

WRs can give UH some problems if O Line solidifies (2 freshman & 2 soph starting)

D Line got blown off the line by the Badgers but were outweighed by 40+ pounds

    and really, who wouldn’t?

The WSU game will prob be a better barometer of UNLV’s potential

    .

Not that they stand a chance vs UH

    Go Warriors!

Ok great, just imagine if the Aussies, Kiwis and the

Japanese love our football team and watch it on TV.

What American sponser would look at this as a profitable

    market to sell to?

ESPN? been there tried that, nothing.

    Buick? no sale.

ABC TV promos? don’t think so.

Mastercard/Visa? already there with better rates.

Unless somebody sees value, it’s a waste of time

  96. WarriorNY September 2, 2011 12:47 pm

    @92,

I don’t understand why UH doesn’t try to get all games televised in Las Vegas. I think UH games would probably beat UNLV games in ratings. I still am really interested what the ratings were in last year’s USC vs. Hawaii game was and compare it to whatever Colorado vs USC rating will be. Between Vegas and SoCal, you’d think that we’d actually have considerably larger market.

Sometimes you gotta look beyond the game itself.

Bless the folks in Tuscaloosa as they continue to deal with last pring’s tornado damage.

The physical wounds that Alabama long-snapper Carson Tinker suffered when the tornado struck on April 27 are nearly gone. The gash that opened his right ankle has diminished to a scratch. The scar on Tinker’s right wrist, where he underwent an operation to reattach a ligament to the bone, is red and raised. It is ugly, and it is healing.

Tinker huddled in a closet with his girlfriend, senior Ashley Harrison, and their two dogs. The tornado ripped through the house and flung the four of them through the air. Only Tinker survived….

  101. A-House September 2, 2011 1:08 pm

    WarriorNY:

#97 – unfortunately, I have been pushing that “wagon” a long time and agree with you that Hawaii has a significant market/draw on the mainland. Would not surprise me that former UH athletes, no matter what sport they played while on campus, will watch and say, “that is where I went to school”.

Unfortunately, we have to convince ESPN that should be a significant factor when they consider “market”. Believe, Garret said, they only consider only State of Hawaii viewer ship.

  102. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 1:13 pm

    Rasu,

They don’t have to find sponsors. If our teams can become popular enough in those markets, the sponsoring network, whether it be ESPN or CBS, can sell telecast rights to those other markets. These markets can then find their own local sponsors. It still equates to $$. But not doing anything to improve our stock is the worst of all sins.

  103. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 1:15 pm

Remember, the Aussie and Kiwi dollars are stronger than ever. They are underpopulated for their land masses and have huge growth potential. Unfortunately, they drive on the wrong side of the street.

  104. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 1:16 pm

So their athletes need to be re-programmed to walk on the right side of the sidewalk and not the left side which leads to people bumping into each other locally.

  107. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 1:23 pm

Japan and China may be emerging areas but football isn’t one of the more popular sports there. For Japan it would be Baseball, Golf, and soccer for the men… and Basketball, Volleyball, Golf, soccer, and softball for the women. Perhaps Tennis for both, too. For Korea, Golf… and more golf. China? I’d day Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer, too… For size and uninhibited body bashing, I’d say Australia and New Zealand are better bets. Let’s become the team of the Pacific…not just Polynesia.

countries in the Pacific Rim would care about a couple or half dozen

atheletes who were/are not good enough to make the national or

junior national teams in their respective sports

Don’t completely agree with that, but your reasons for the sole focus of only in-state does carry merit, BUT local people want winners. Now, Im not completely saying that a team comprised of all local players, even the best ones, will automatically draw crowds.

I cannot speak for the non-revenue sports like tennis or golf, or swimming and diving, and water polo, but for softball the figures are staggering.

The PAC 12 has DOMINATED the NCAA Women’s College World Series and teams as far as the SEC are feasting on the top California recruits. Cali is a softball pipeline, THE softball pipeline. What the state of Florida and Texas are to the game of college football, California is that to women’s softball.

I wrote before that the sheer # of games any given softball player at the high school and club level plays in one calendar year surpasses that of any local girl. Local BASEball kids get more of a chance to play more games comparable to their mainland counterparts I think, but for local softball girls, the overall playing time is just not there. Whether or not it has to do with population and/or finances, local girls don’t have that experience available to them compared to their California counterparts.

Now, there ARE for sure solid Division 1 talent coming out of Hawaii and Coach Coolen hit a homer with Leisha Liilii, voted by coaches and media as the 2011 position player of the year and we all saw her lead her team to the states last season on the mound and at the plate. She was a GREAT find for sure. How she’ll translate to the college game, I dunno??? Same goes with the other signees, but when you look at their overall playing experience at the club and high school levels, the difference is noticeable.

At one point when the OIA was into the playoffs, I believe most of the players had achieved about 40 something at bats, where their Cali counterparts where already in the upper 50’s and they still have yet to reach post-season play. A difference of an extra 10-20, even 30 at bats in one year doesn’t seem like a lot, but you multiply that difference over the course of several years and it’s hard to duplicate or replace the games you haven’t played or the at bats you haven’t experienced.

Also you have to factor in the kind of competition the Cali travel clubs face considering the amount of players in the state of California vs Hawaii.

I wrote before that players like Jessica Iwata are amazing considering that Kauai has like three high schools. Iwata played club ball as well, but again compared to how many games they will play is just not the same. So, for Iwata to come in and for two years now have similar results at the plate (batting a consistent .330+, 15-17 homers a year) is amazing. A testament to her own hard work and skill for the game.

Why I bring this up, is because any D1 softball coach is looking to win and will do what he/she can to do so in the manner that has shown to be successful on a national scale and in this particular sport of softball Hawaii itself is not a pipeline like California. YES, Hawaii got some damn good players, but as people have mentioned before, we CANNOT KEEP THEM ALL.

Regardless of how “minor” a sport is, those coaches want to win as much as ANY coach in a “major” sport and their recruiting approach is just as aggressive and well thought out as a football or basketball coach.

I think Coach Coolen has maintained a good balance of local girls to Cali/mainland players to this very day as in the past. We’ve had local players make impacts on the program like Deidre Wisneski, Tanisha Milca, Kate Robinson, Brandi Peiler, Tamara Kaluau, Valana Manuma, Tyleen Tausaga, Kaulana Williams, and Alana Power and we’ve had mainland/international players like Tia Morenz, Brooke Wilkins, Dana Degan, Stacey Porter, and Tracie Uchima also making big marks on the program.

If anything, the smaller non-revenue sports must stay on top competitvely to garner attention and interest and to do so each coach must keep on top of their respective recruiting game depending on the national outlook of their particular sport.

I’m all for grabbing the best local talent as much as possible. Would I want to see the Rainbow Wahine stacked with all Cali and international players? Honestly??? No. It hurts our identity as “HAWAII” and also because there are GREAT local players as well.

But like I mentioned, I think Coolen has a good mix of both worlds.

Just saying in this case and I guess in any case, you do not want to center your recruiting focus in one area.

Also, I think the university and the state has benefitted from the influx of mainland and international players coming in for the other “smaller” sports.

A lot of these guys and girls fall in love with Hawaii, the people, and the culture… more than some would want people to think and they can and have given back to the local community. Case in point, softball had a pitcher that graduated in 2008 from Oregon, I believe her major was in social work. Long story short, she is now the pitching coach at an ILH school. She embraced the local culture and speaks pretty good Samoan I think.

  110. Derek September 2, 2011 1:53 pm

3 Boise St. football players are suspended for the Georgia game tomorrow. All 3 are foreign players and an issue arose with the NCAA so they are being witheld until it is resolved. 2 of the players are projected starters. One a receiver, another is a safety, while a third is a backup for DT Billy Winn. This means Jeremy Ioane, out of Punahou, gets a start at safety against one of the best QBs in the SEC and the entire country in Aaron Murray. Welcome to Division I football.

  111. Bowwar September 2, 2011 2:01 pm

#28 ST – If it’s even close, UH should go with Hadden, as he’s their present and future. If Chun (who is a Senior) is “close” but not clearly over Hadden, then UH should go with Hadden and show some support. Start with Hadden and if he proves unworthy by missing a few FGs or Extra points, then consider Chun. But to “share” the kicking duties, I think is both unwise and not good for the long-term development of Hadden.

I hope they are not considering taking three kickers on the road with them. In my mind, it should be Dunnache and Hadden. Hadden is the back-up punter and kick-off person, so I don’t see why they would leave him off the traveling squad.

  112. madeinhawaii September 2, 2011 2:01 pm

    Derek,

If I read that article about Boise correctly, all three were playing in games last season. I think all were starters. So, it’s strange that they have to sit out until NCAA approval again.

    Howzeet Gangeez! 🙂

    One more day!

Regarding the kickers, I believe Coach Tomey said that in the past he has waited until game day to decide if the competition’s close. He would evaluate the kickers during warm ups, and who ever was kicking better would get the nod. That shows a kicker’s mettle under pressure I presume, and Coach said he did things that way a few times.

I was talking to one of Coach Tomey’s former players yesterday and we agreed that Tomey’s coaching/presence could make a big difference in this game.

On the Coach Mack Show last night, Bobbby Curran and The Ferd both agreed that Coach Mack has done a great job putting together a strong coaching staff. I think our staff of coaches is one advantage Hawaii has going into the game tomorrow.

The Warriors have to be focused, humble and hungry. Don’t expect things to be easy and don’t let up no matter how things go.

I agree with Kevin. A winning softball team brings in $$ to the program as witness to a recent donation to the softball team.

If the name “Hawaii” is mentioned in any sport – whether in football or wahine softball or volleyball or whatever – it generates interest in our State and by implication, in our athletic programs.

Another update on conference realignment. Following quote this evening from Oklahoma’s president…

We obviously want stability in our conference relationships. We want partners that are above outstanding, both athletically and academically. A conference that’s strong is not only stable, but it’s one in which there are multiple relationships, along with sports, between university members. We have some great partners in the existing Big 12. We have interest from other conferences and other universities. It’s really attributed to the strength of the programs at the University of Oklahoma that there is so much interest in us. We have to carefully evaluate the various comments being made to us and various possibilities before we decide what’s best for the University of Oklahoma.

    http://blog.newsok.com/ou/

His whole statement is a very interesting read. If the Big 12 implodes, the MWC is in line to be AQ conference #6 next year…

    SEC’s 14th team…possibly from Big 12 again?

One source said the conference is targeting Missouri as the 14th member, which makes tons of sense based on what I’ve been told – and have mentioned on the Hotline.

Garret, seeing as Baylor is smashing TCU… Is a Horned Frog loss bad for the MWC’s BCS numbers, or the Big East’s, or both? I’m guessing a weakened TCU will hurt the MWC.

    Game getting interesting now…

  151. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 2, 2011 5:08 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

TCU and Boise numbers will count towards the MWC at the current eval of the 4-year BCS cycle that ends this year but BYU, Utah, Hawaii etc will not count.

When it comes to the overlapping 2 years or the “temporary” AQ Status, all incoming schools numbers can be used but not outgoing like TCU.

I don’t see a loss to Baylor as “hurting” the MWC BCS numbers that much. I think if they lose 2-3 games as expected that they can still stay within the top 35 or so in BCS. Too early in the season for anyone to guess what or who will be where.

If both Boise and TCU end up in nowheresville Top 10 or so then it wouldn’t be a good thing.

  152. Mad Dog September 2, 2011 5:12 pm

But then I guess Colt having been ID as a system QB would not fit in the 4-wide offense the ‘Hawks employ. HA!

  213. Garret September 2, 2011 8:00 pm

Garret, seeing as Baylor is smashing TCU… Is a Horned Frog loss bad for the MWC’s BCS numbers, or the Big East’s, or both? I’m guessing a weakened TCU will hurt the MWC.

    HawaiiMongoose,

iwonderwhy’s explanation was right on. One thing that should be pointed out is that the MWC is #7 in the average computer ranking category and that won’t change during the 2010-2013 evaluation period. However, losing Utah and BYU really did hurt in the other 2 categories and it is possible that the MWC will *not* qualify to apply for AP status is they drop in one of the other 2 categories.

The MWC is #5 in one category the last time I checked. If TCU, BSU, and the rest of the MWC lose a few nonconference games, the AQ criteria that is solely determined by the highest ranked team in the conference will take a HUGE hit. The MWC also needs at least 2 teams in the top 25, which I thought was guaranteed with TCU and BSU…but if both lose a few nonconference games that could kill the MWC’s AQ chances.

If the MWC falls to #7 in more than 1 AQ category, they will be automatically be eliminated from AQ consideration for 2012. If Nevada and Fresno beat BSU (I seriously doubt that would happen, but this is an example), they could be denying the MWC from getting AQ status.

  214. jm2375 September 2, 2011 8:02 pm

slugger – sorry, all will be explained tomorrow.

  215. Garret September 2, 2011 8:03 pm

I know that I pointed out awhile ago that if the Big East or Big 12 get destroyed by conference realignment, then the MWC would automatically become a top 6 conference. One major flaw in this is that the 2008-2011 AQ evaluation period doesn’t care if teams leave those conferences…it will just look at the results of this season and in the past. So, even if the Big East and/or Big 12 blew up, the MWC would *not* get AQ status in 2012.

The entire BCS system is supposed to be reviewed before the 2010-2013 AQ evaluation period is over. They can change the rules then, so just being in the top 6 might be not enough. If the Big East or Big 12 go away, the entire BCS system would have to be overhauled and new bowl agreements would need to be done…

  216. Slugger September 2, 2011 8:10 pm

It’s ok, jmxxxx… triple chocolate cake will have to suffice. 😀

  217. Garret September 2, 2011 8:11 pm

The projections I saw indicated that the MWC just needed to have a season in 2011 similar to the past few seasons and they would be in the top 6 in at least 2 categories. That would trigger the AQ appeal, and I honestly think that the appeal would be granted and UH would be joining an AQ conference in 2012.

The projections all assume that the MWC will have a team in the top 10 and multiple teams (maybe 3 but a minimum of 2) in the top 25. Given that BSU and TCU will count, that seemed like a good assumption. The MWC would need to win most of their nonconference games also to help the computer ranking and the SOS.

TCU and UNLV have not started the MWC off well. The MWC needs BSU to run the table and give them a team in the top 5. The game in Atlanta is *crucial* for UH and the rest of the 2012 MWC. The timing of them losing 3 players from Amsterdam when no real NCAA violations may have happened really hurts and if I was a conspiracy theorist and thought that someone didn’t want the MWC to get AQ status I would wonder about that.

It hurts me to do so, but I’m going to hope that BSU wins all their games. UH doesn’t play them and BSU winning is best for UH’s future in the MWC. And I have to hope the other MWC teams win their nonconference games also except for UNLV vs. UH.

SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING A FRESNECK WOULD DO!!!!!

    http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=news/loc%20al&id=8340696

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A Fresno County social services employee has been arrested for welfare fraud and an Action News investigation has revealed a troubling connection to the Fresno State Bulldog football team.

Michael Martin was arrested August 12th on several felony charges including embezzling thousands of dollars. Some of the accusations stem from him signing off on welfare benefits to two dozen members of the 2010 Fresno State football team.

We asked Fresno State about the allegations and the school issued this statement.

“Fresno State Athletics is aware that there is presently an ongoing investigation into the misuse of the application process of the California Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program formerly known as the food stamp program. Student-athletes were among the individuals that received benefits from this process, perhaps improperly.

Per our policy, the Fresno State Department of Athletics’ staff and student-athletes will cooperate fully with all investigative authorities.”

The statement goes on to say, the athletic department’s code of conduct was violated and punitive actions have been levied upon a number of current student-athletes.

In a document detailing the findings of an investigation by Fresno County officials — it says Martin issued food stamp benefits to 24 football players on the 2010 CSU Fresno roster and two other collegiate athletes.

The documents allege Martin failed to enter pertinent information into the computer system indicating that all of these athletes were full time students, making them ineligible.

The investigation found a total of $39,267 in CalFresh benefits was issued to these ineligible collegiate athletes.

The names of the players are not listed in the report’s findings and it’s unclear whether the athletes were aware they did not meet the criteria to get these benefits.

Kevin ~ Amazing how peeps are hard-wired to exit the sports arena or stadium just so they can ‘beat’ the traffic. Nevah mind the fact that this is the rubber match and their vocal support is needed. Sheesh!

  236. Kevin September 2, 2011 9:36 pm

I always try to buy seats in the sections OCCUPIED by the people that leave early…

something is not right about that…

After all these fake Saturday wake ups, tomorrow when I wake up it will finally be real. Maybe I can’t sleep tonight anticipating the big game tomorrow. 15 more minutes before game day. I still can’t wait. Go Warriors!!

  256. watch movies live September 2, 2011 11:54 pm

Good article, I will rewrite it on my page(of course with backlink)

  257. Hilo-Warrior September 3, 2011 12:14 am

I think the first half will be closer than wanted. But the second half is where Hawaii will flex their MIGHT! Moniz will throw for a little over 400 yards. While our RB’s will have some fun as well. But our defense will step up huge tomorrow. The front 7 with our new backfield will have a field day.

    My prediction

    Hawaii 44

    Colorado 28

  258. Slugger September 3, 2011 12:22 am

Special teams play will be very much improved. Mahalo, Coach Tomey!

It’s a good problem to have two kickers who are so close in the competition that they both get to play today. Hurrah!

    GO MO! GO O!

    GO D! GO ST!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Night all! Sweet Warrior Winning Dreams!

  259. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 3, 2011 12:23 am

    Kevin:

I yelled at a bunch of “fans” leaving about five minutes into the fifth set using language that would require @#$%T^&*&%# to post on this blog – DrDoc was appalled – at me – so I suggested that he go after them for being @#$%T^&*&%#s.

Once the pre-WAC season is done, then it’ll be snoozer time, but from now until September, get thy okoles down to The Stan.

Of course, we will be at tomorrow’s game – have no clue as to what to expect given the situations that have popped up, but win or lose, we still have a great team to support.

  260. Lopaka43 September 3, 2011 12:26 am

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!

Many thanks to all the Tsaikos sending happy birthday wishes.

Was at the Stan Sheriff tonight and enjoyed the Wahine’s birthday present: a victory over our old rival, Long Beach State. Won’t it be great to revive those old rivalries? How many times did Long Beach State prove to be the stumbling block in the old days? Our teams got so much stronger playing those kind of teams in volleyball than the weak sisters we have been facing in the WAC.

Tonight’s game was one where Pride’s warning rang true. We found ourself in that moment in the game when it seems like there is no way we can win, the wheels were falling off the car, the other team seemingly dominating at will, and yet the Wahine found the way to pull it back together, gut it out, find a way to win.

What a great weekend for Hawaii sports!! Really looking forward to seeing you all again in a few hours at the Tailgate.

    Go Warriors!! Go Bows!!

ESPN article on SMU and June Jones.

One VERY interesting thing is that JJ was interested in the job and had indirectly contacted SMU PRIOR to the Washington game.

Guess JJ made up his mind to leave and there probably wasn’t anything at any point that we could have done to change his mind.

“But more than halfway through the process, Jones took a surprising (and secretive) interest in the SMU job. Near the end of authoring the best season in Hawaii history, with an 11-0 team that needed to only beat Washington at home to cinch a remarkable BCS bowl bid, Jones placed a call to former SMU running back Eric Dickerson.”

“I would take that job if it was offered to me,” Jones told Dickerson. “But I can’t read my name in the paper associated with it in any way. If I do, I’ll pull out.”

“It was absolutely amazing,” Jones said. “For 30 days it stayed off radar. That’s when I knew I wanted to work for those guys.”

“The real reason I wanted to come here is that they were the worst I’d ever seen,” Jones said. “Just like Hawaii was the worst I’d ever seen when I went there. But it did attract me that they had been to the top before.””

Looks like Oklahoma might be considering bolting from big12 as well; decision to be made within a week or so, according to espn-ticker tape.

Enjoy the game gangeeez, be safe.

Al ~ You are correct sir. I remember having a few extra tickets last year. As game time approached, there were no takers.

After the singing of the National Anthem, 4 Sisters of St. Francis arrived. My dreams of making 1,000% profit quickly turned to dust. I found myself offering them the ducats for zero dollars. I think they knew I was supposed to be there.

He said, “Brah, mebbe if you got rid of da ‘Got Food’ sign, somebody would buy your tickets!”

    Game day, let’s go WARRIORS!

  284. Kekoa September 3, 2011 5:16 am

    WW . . .

    Your timing is off. HA!

  304. d1shima September 3, 2011 5:56 am

    wafan,

Evidently not. It was a long wait for an ambulance for that Damien LB; and that was from the stands! Can’t imagine how long it seemed on the field. Thank goodness it wasn’t a life-threatening emergency.

  305. Wes'side Warrior September 3, 2011 5:56 am

Wafan, what happened that made you ask that question about ambulances?

  306. Wes'side Warrior September 3, 2011 5:56 am

Ah, guess my timing is off. Ask, and already answered before hitting [enter]

  307. Wes'side Warrior September 3, 2011 5:57 am

What’s up with Damien getting dinged up bad couple of weeks in a row now?

  321. clowns nose September 3, 2011 6:29 am

So there’s 70 Warrior players that spend the night at a hotel before every home game(?).

ST, vaguely, wrote about that last week.

We learn that players have curfew and attend meetings.

My question how many Warrior players suit up for the game?

If there are more than 70 players suiting up for the game today then my next question would be where do the remainder of the players stay before the night of the game? Who looks after them? Are they on their own?

Do the remainder of the team join the other 70 Warriors at the hotel in the morning for meetings and pregame meals?

In the pictures accompanying the blog it looks like the players going over to the hotel are restricted into dressing in the same attire. My question why is Ingram dressed differently? Is he staying over at the hotel the night before the game? Are some players, maybe starters, excused from staying over at the hotel the night before the game?

  322. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 6:36 am

Is it really, really Saturday? Woke up too early. Somebody tell me, is it really Saturday?

Utah State reppin’ da WAC well…Go Aggies!! haha

  332. oldtimer808 September 3, 2011 6:51 am

Good morning…look out for Utah State..who would have thought that Utah State would be beating No. 21 Auburn at Auburn. Utah State just scored to make it 21 to 7 in the 2nd quarter…hold off Auburn just returned the kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

  333. sports_for_fun September 3, 2011 6:51 am

Special teams…hopefully UH can do that touchdown thing tonight!

  334. mctruck September 3, 2011 6:52 am

What-the????, auburn just scored on kick-off return????, still com’on Utah State!!

  335. Committed Road Warrior September 3, 2011 6:52 am

Auburn scores on a kickoff return, but that also means Utah State gets the offense back on the field…and they’ve controlled T.O.P. so far.

  336. mctruck September 3, 2011 6:57 am

my #332…I take dat back…my fingers are still here….bwaaaahaha!!

U know dat female play-call person on espn2 sounds like the same call play person who made negative comments when the soft-ball Wahines played a couple years back.

#323 – nose – players who do not stay at the hotel meet the team at the stadium.

  343. Wes'side Warrior September 3, 2011 7:19 am

All right, TCU! Way to start bringing down the Big East’s AQ score!!! Keep at it! You’re doing great!!!

  344. Shoko September 3, 2011 7:21 am

Think Auburn might take it to the air in the second half because their run game is less than impressive. Aggies pass defense is questionable and might be a weakness that can be exploited. Just my opinion…

  345. jm2375 September 3, 2011 7:33 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    IT’S GAME DAY!!

    YAHOOOOOOO!!

See you all in a few hours.

    GO WARRIORS!

  346. WarriorNY September 3, 2011 7:34 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

Unfortunately, TCU’s loss counts against the MWC for next season… We gotta hope they are in the top 25 with Boise in the final rankings…

Game Day! Bring the Noise folks, our D is gonna feed off of you who are out there. Bring it for all of us who aren’t able to go… I hope you all can help bring our boys a victory…

  347. kawika49 September 3, 2011 7:39 am

wow auburn really unorganized..who’d a thunk it?

  348. kawika49 September 3, 2011 7:41 am

Any other big islanders, going to go to the Alibi lounge, 245 steps from my door to cheer on the kanaks.

  349. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 7:45 am

Looks like Aurburn will wear down Utah State. Good effort by US but Aurburn just scored to tie the game. Looks like they adjusted and just went down the field to score.

  350. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 7:45 am

    Aurburn=Auburn.

  351. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 3, 2011 7:46 am

Great article, I truly await fresh news from you.

  354. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 7:53 am

Auwe! Mana Silva was waived from the Ravens, then put on the taxi squad. Trades may be taking place. Still has outside chance.

  355. Wes'side Warrior September 3, 2011 7:55 am

I thought their score goes with them, like ours goes with us to the MWC, and not the WAC, even though we move following the season, exactly as TCU is doing.

  356. Da Punchbowl Kid September 3, 2011 7:56 am

    GOOD MORNING GANGEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZ! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    IT’S GAME DAY BY GAWLY!!!

  357. Da Punchbowl Kid September 3, 2011 7:58 am

    ATTENTION: BREW808!

Please report to the Warrior Beat and get this party started!!! 😉

  358. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 7:58 am

In the NFL, is it called taxi squad or practice squad? Mana was the only safety kept among the new guys so still has an outside chance.

  359. papajoe2 September 3, 2011 8:00 am

Any other news on the former Warriors in the NFL?

  360. Da Punchbowl Kid September 3, 2011 8:03 am

    Hey papajoe2 –

Guess what? It’s game day! 🙂

  366. WarriorNY September 3, 2011 8:17 am

    Wes’side,

If things were run logically in the BCS, you’d be right. Unfortunately the morons who run the BCS came up with this ridiculous method for gaining AQ status.

Wow… What a defensive series for the Aggies…

  374. mctruck September 3, 2011 8:37 am

Another thing bout these play-call peeps for the Utah State/Auburn game…notice they infrequently refer to Auburn as, “WE”???? how much of a homer is that???

  375. 808ike September 3, 2011 8:37 am

    Good morning everyone.

    It’s football Saturday!!!!!!

    TD!!!!

  394. A-House September 3, 2011 8:54 am

    wafan:

glad to know that you made it back home safely!

UH opening offensive strategy: for the first 3 possessions, run the 4 receivers into LONG patterns to wear out the DBs – alternate the receivers so they can stay fresh – lucky, one or more may get open for a long gain or TD – if more lucky, RB carries for long gain or TD!!

repeat to start the 2nd half – by then, the defensive backs should be really pooped!!

it’s a good thing I’m not the offensive coordinator.

  395. tommui September 3, 2011 8:54 am

    Helping DPK make 400!

He is easily without a doubt one of the best DJ’s I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in person. I have seen him twice this year, once at Myst in Phoenix and the other at EDC. I have been in the EDM scene for years and never have I seen somebody make sure that no set is the same by always making edits and switching up tracks even though he has phenominal studio tracks. I can’t wait until he comes back I will definately go VIP this time!
