On the other hand …

Last week, a UH person told me that there was no way Mel deLaura, recently replaced as the head strength/conditioning coach for the Warrior football team, would go to SMU to reunite with June Jones. The person said SMU did not have any openings.

But then last night, I got a call from Jones, who said that, in fact, he has two openings for strength/conditioning coaches. He said there are a bunch of procedures that need to be done first.

So I stand corrected.

The past three days, every coach, administrator and athletic department staff worker was required to attend a four-hour session on diversity (with an emphasis on acceptance of others). Because of scheduling conflicts, there were a couple of noticeably absences. Not to fret. Every absentee is required to watch a video of the session.

Viloria got an 85K raise by going to Florida State opening the fb s/c coach position. His salary of 160K is more than some of the assistant fb coaches.

  3. Ralph January 28, 2010 12:03 am

Does June read the blog, how did he know that you posted no way Mel goes to SMU

  4. al January 28, 2010 12:13 am

    he could

  5. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2010 12:23 am

Yes. June Jones reads the blog.
He said he reads it daily.
He also reads The Advertiser online. He said we need to charge something — anything — for the content.

darn no recruiting updates??? please tell me we are offering Allen Sampson. He is bigtime!!

  15. Shannon January 28, 2010 1:22 am

I think JJ made a huge statement by blowing Nevada out of the water for his “Homecoming”. It was just a matter of time that Mel was bound to jump ship to SMU. I bet Coach Mac is jealous of DeLaura right about now…

  16. Shannon January 28, 2010 1:27 am

Watching JJ hold that Hawaii Bowl trophy and celebrating with his players, after whipping Nevadas @$$ was like watching your Ex-Girlfriend at the dance with her new boyfriend… You wanna be happy for her but it hurts so much…

  17. rasu begasu January 28, 2010 1:27 am

The new UNLV coach has hit the ground running, has a quality staff and recruiting like crazy.
Same areas UH looks for kids (Central & South Cali) got some *** kids in just a few days.
Don’t think the UNLV game will be an easy one in the future

  18. Shannon January 28, 2010 1:28 am

No, I’m not depressed that JJ & SMU is doing better than Mac & Hawaii. LOL ; )

  19. rasu begasu January 28, 2010 1:31 am

Watching JJ hold that Hawaii Bowl trophy and celebrating with his players, after whipping Nevadas @$$ was like watching your Ex-Girlfriend at the dance with her new boyfriend… You wanna be happy for her but it hurts so much…

And her boyfriend is the stud QB from another school who transferred from your school because your school had a retard for a A.D. and no shower heads or soap in the locker room.

  20. rasu begasu January 28, 2010 1:36 am

There is no comparison with SMU, its all about the money that SMU can raise, the real education they can provide and all those crazy football dads that hold their kids back a year in school so the kids are bigger and stronger

Coach, your word still carries weight!

JJs plan to put it in the Ala Wai Golf Course!

  34. Garret January 28, 2010 5:09 am

    ST,

I do not understand why a UH person would tell you that SMU did not have any openings last week when well over a week ago their head strength and conditioning coach for football took the S/C job at Florida State for $160k. It isn’t like JJ fired him to open a space for Mel, Vic more than doubled his salary by going to Florida State. That UH person definitely gave you some bad information to pass along on Saturday…

  35. Garret January 28, 2010 5:14 am

Florida State is a state school so they released the salary that Viloria got from them, 2 years at $160k per year.

  36. Garret January 28, 2010 5:17 am

Published reports said that Viloria left SMU for Florida State on January 9. January 23 was when the report came out on the blog that Heffernan was replacing Mel. So, the UH person who told you that SMU didn’t have any openings was not correct–they had an opening for about 2 weeks already and they actually knew about the Florida State offer well before that…

  37. Pomai January 28, 2010 5:20 am

So it’s a 99.999999% that Mel is going to get a good pay raise.

  38. NYUH January 28, 2010 5:36 am

Congrats to the Wahine on their win last night.

  40. bighilofan2 January 28, 2010 5:54 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Garret

    thanks for the information

    Granny

thanks for checking up with the NCAA and letting us know.

  41. Garret January 28, 2010 5:55 am

Nevada coach Chris Ault has to win this season and do well in a bowl game to keep his job.

Nevada football coach Chris Ault will be at risk of losing his job if the 2010 season is not an improvement on 2009, multiple sources have told the Reno Gazette-Journal in the last two weeks.

According to the sources, Athletics Director Cary Groth told the 63-year-old Ault in the days following the 45-10 Hawaii Bowl loss to SMU that he must contend for a Western Athletic Conference championship and not have an embarrassing performance in a bowl game or his 26th season could be his last.

  42. jm2375 January 28, 2010 5:56 am

    Oh yeah…

    Happy birthday, a-joe!

  43. Bulla January 28, 2010 5:57 am

    Good luck to Mel,

you never know when our paths will cross again 🙂

bhf2, how you bro, i think i sent you something, check your FB, haha

mahalo to Garret for the info, mr. 411 himself

have a productive day to ALL the Tsaikos out there, past, present and future

  44. Garret January 28, 2010 5:57 am

Ault sure doesn’t make much for coaching a team that was 7-1 in the WAC last year.

Several sources said Nevada can’t afford to buy out Ault, a problem compounded by the recession. Ault is paid $385,000 per year, which ranks near 100th out of 120 FBS coaches and is about one-third what the coaches at Boise State, Fresno State and Hawaii make.

  45. jm2375 January 28, 2010 5:59 am

Good morning Bulla. See ya tomorrow.

Howzit Mr. Hilo. Long time no see.

  46. Garret January 28, 2010 6:01 am

    Happy Birthday A-Joe!

  47. bighilofan2 January 28, 2010 6:03 am

Best of luck to Mel in his future.

I personally felt good about Coach taking some action to try and change the vibe. Somebody has to take the hit if you’re trying to change the land scape, so why not look for a scape goat? But I would question the political acumen of the UH person who gave ST the bum steer, when we all can see the accuracy of the info given to ST.

and thanks Granny, for clearing up the NCAA misinfo for us. hopefully we’ll see your grandson this coming season starting with USC.

  48. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2010 6:07 am

I was actually surprised Vic Viloria was the head strength guy at SMU. I remember him when he was a feisty linebacker who used to joke that he had Hawaii ties.
He came up to me at the Hawaii Bowl practice and started talking about a story I wrote about him years ago. I didn’t remember it, but pretended I did. Anyway, he’s a really nice guy.
Well, this means there should be an opening on the UH staff. let’s think of the possibilities: Chris Brown? Kenny Patton?

  49. bighilofan2 January 28, 2010 6:09 am

hiya jm2375, bulla, all you guys.

I’m trying to be positive, Warrior Mojo, I am really trying hard.
notice, i never ask ST, who was the [NR*] that gave you the bum
steers about SMU. or the bum steer about NCAA rule on Satele.
no matter who is right, the 8 point print is awful to read from 3′ away.
always going get excuses. hopefully, UH will look at the granny info positively and get the confirm in writing. winning is about results. imo

    Have a great day gangee.

A quick update on funds allocated for Aloha Stadium – however, at this point, I haven’t been able to confirm that any of the allocations include the turf replacement project.

Hopefully, there is because, as of this writing, no additional funding is in the supplemental budget submitted by the Governor. However, the budget process has barely begun.

NOTE: These figures do not indicate what was actually RELEASED by the Governor in the previous fiscal years as well as the current fiscal year.

“Plans, design and construction for the mitigation/elimination of conditions that may become hazardous to health and safety, including rrepairs, alterations and improvements to the Aloha Stadium to meet civil, safety and/or operational requirements.”

    July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008: $12,430,000

    July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009: $25,950,000

    July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010: $15,000, 000

    July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011: $12,100,000

TOTAL ALLOCATED BY THE LEGISLATURE OVER THE PAST THREE LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS: $65,480,000

More research to do. And, mahalo, Stephen & others, for the unexpected compliments yesterday.

This part fo the JJ interview was interesting and should be taken to heart. Hawaii is lucky and recruits should know we play to the nation’s attention.

Q: How important was it for the team to not just make a bowl game, but win it?

A: Winning it was critical because of the unique time slot that game had on ESPN [Christmas Eve and the only bowl game on at the time]. Every player that played professional football, college or high school was watching that game. To have that type of game on that day, really you can’t pay for that kind of marketing for your team and what you do.

  86. expat January 28, 2010 9:16 am

I still can’t believe that there is someone who thinks they are higher up than ST. I guess some people will always delude themselves.

    Shannon:

Coach Jones had a better year this year for sure and it seems like his players are getting the hang of his system…. nonetheless he is 9 – 16 (6 – 10 conf) in two years with SMU. Coach Mac is 13 – 14 (8 – 8 conf)

Of those 14 losses 5 were to BCS teams and 2 were to a ranked Boise State. Wins included two against (the same) BCS school and a road win against a ranked (conference) opponent.

Of SMU’s losses, 2 were to BCS teams and 2 were to ranked non-BCS schools. There were no wins against ranked opponents or BCS schools.

In terms of head to heads, SMU beat Nevada, which beat Hawaii, but lost to both Navy and Washington State, both of whom lost to Hawaii.

I think it is hard to look at that and say that SMU is doing better than Hawaii. Sure, they each went to one bowl game and SMU won while Hawaii lost — but that only tells one part of the story.

I think it is hard to look beyond the prism of what Hawaii did the last two years JJ was here and the expectations that he set. Objectively though both JJ and Mac had to rebuild programs and while JJ is doing a great job the evidence doesn’t support that he is doing a better job than Mac.

  94. Stephen Tsai January 28, 2010 9:57 am

    Hey, all:
I don’t like to pull plugs.
And if anybody knows me, I really don’t like authority, which is why the situation ticks me off.
The point isn’t about making points. I think the person in timeout makes excellent points.
But there has to be some sort of tact. I mean you might suggest to an overweight person some health tips or offer encouragement when the person does something healthful
But you wouldn’t say: “You’re fat. And you know you’re fat .And we all know you’re fat.”
And then say that every day.
And then when others try to be encouraging of the person, to say: “Well, I don’t know what color the sky is in your world, but he’s fat in my mine.”
The point is taken. But after a while, it’s time to call a cab.
While I hate to see any guest leave, it’s better to say “take a break” to one than to see 25 go.
And it’s worse when the higher-ups tell you it’s pau-hana time.

That said, it’s not looking hopeful for UH (or BYU) fans that Kona Schwenke is being hosted by Manti Teo at Notre Dame.

How can we attend your feed and thickness camp?
    07/18/06 @ 17:37

Feed and Thickness camp (a.k.a. Cattle Call) tryouts will be held tomorrow at Camellia (McCully). Noon. All invited. No size minimum. Bulla and the Beast presiding.

RSVP on the blog, so Al knows how may people he’ll have to apologize for… 🙂 I’m not going early and have to explain that 15 people are going to need seating space for 25… 😐

  103. Dan-O January 28, 2010 10:34 am

    Just a thought…..

I think one difficult aspect of UH recruiting the state’s top players (or any local player for that matter), is that the recruits know/see UH as a safety net. Meaning…..they know that if things dont work out at another school, there is always the possibility of returning home and playing for UH.

That being said…..it would be difficult to turn down offers from bigger schools/conferences, as that might be the only chance these recruits get at playing/experiencing the mainland.

You only get ONE chance to sign with Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, etc…..but you can ALWAYS come home, with UH as the last option.

  104. djmitcho January 28, 2010 10:36 am

Maybe I missed it but did either of the Dingle brothers try out? I remember there was an article about them awhile back.

  107. madeinhawaii January 28, 2010 10:51 am

    Dan-O,

Yep.. and I think while all of us would like to see our blue-chippers stay and play for the home crowd, we know that many will be lured away by the “brand name” of certain schools.

For me, that’s all well and good and the way life is and I wish them well. In four to five years I will forget who they are, not because I’m dissing them, but because I am a UH Warrior fan and not a fan of another Uni or College. It’s a simple case of “out of sight, out of mind.”

What bothers me most, though, is when a prospective recruit doesn’t even have Hawaii on their top 5 list going into their final year. So I have to ask myself. Did we (the fans) fail? How has UH’s reputation in academics and/or athletics gotten that bad in the mind of the athlete? If that is the case, why? What do we need to do to change this so that every top high school athlete in Hawaii will at least rate the UH program as one of their top 5 choices. Cause then, and only then will our home grown programs enjoy the success that the best from our islands can offer.

  108. lava January 28, 2010 10:52 am

My understanding is Kona has not been offered as of yet. Regardless, he’s a project due to his tweener size/speed. He’s not going to wow anyone as a frosh. A red shirt candidate all the way, at best. No disrespect to him, just thinking people need to look realistically at these kids.

  109. lava January 28, 2010 10:54 am

I should have said, Kona had not yet been offer by Notre Dame.

Keep in mind, ND is scrambling, and has a ton of visitors this weekend.

Okay… Well if you’re reading this Coach Jones, I just gotta say, ya broke muh heart when you left, but I am truly happy you are doing so well where you are. God be with you. And of you’re ever back in town, you should allow the Tsaikos to host you at a cattle call. 😉

  112. A-House January 28, 2010 11:11 am

    Curiosity question:

Anyone know if UH offer letter has a clause or disclaimer that the student athlete will notify UH “before” accepting a scholarship to another school allowing UH to use it for another student athlete?

Seems like we are seeing a number of commits decommit just before signing day and going another school. Most troublesome are those who made an early commitment only now to diss UH.

Or, is this a “matter of fact” fact dealing with college football recruiting only. Just don’t see this in other sports.

It must be awfullying frustrating to coaches.

    Irish Offer Kona
    By Jeff Baumhower

    Posted Jan 27, 2010

Notre Dame made its interest in Kona Schwenke from Kahuku High School (Hawaii) official today as the Notre Dame coaching staff informed Schwenke that he had a scholarship to play at Notre Dame.

Despite the Irish getting involved late in the game, it would appear that Notre Dame has a chance to sign Kona Schwenke (6-foo-4, 230-pounds). After inviting Kona on an official visit earlier in the week, the Notre Dame coaching staff followed up today with a scholarship offer. IrishEyes spoke with Kona’s father shortly after he spoke with the Notre Dame coaches.

“I just got a call back from Notre Dame and they confirmed that the offer was made, so we’re going to fly up there tomorrow afternoon,” Mr. Schwenke said. “We’re excited. I know Kona is also excited. We’re absolutely excited about the events over the past couple days and we’re looking forward to coming over there and seeing the school, meeting the coaches, as well as some of the faculty members.

“The history of Notre Dame, and everything about the school, being a parent has us excited. I remember watching some of the old Notre Dame games from way, way back and to get the opportunity to get an offer from Notre Dame is something that is beyond words for myself, and I know I can speak for my wide as well. We’re just excited to come up there and visit and check out the campus and check out the school. I know Kona is very excited as well.”

“Based on the conversations that we’ve had with the coaches, they’re very gracious and very accommodating to us, and it will be very exciting to meet them face to face,” the Mr. Schwenke explained. “I don’t doubt there is a lot of sincerity in their voices and that they’re caring people that want the best for our son. There’s nothing that I sense from our conversations that would make me feel otherwise. I felt really god about the conversations I’ve had with the coaches thus far.”

    ST: re #59.

Meant to say “smu” or “86” as necessary.

    Delete those “da kine” posts.

  120. Ralph January 28, 2010 11:44 am

Expat Difficult to compare SMU and UH at this point in time, unfair to both coaches. JJ took over a team that had one winning season in 25 years, and their last bowl game was 25 years ago. To look at SMU 2 year record and assess JJ success is asking too much, but SMU got a winning season at 8-5 and a bowl win. Mac took over a team that just appeared in a BCS bowl game, a UH team that JJ took to several Hawaii bowls, the expectations were high, but the OL and DL were lacking due to graduation and depth issues. I think we should expect an improvement in Mac’s third year and definitely the coaching staff’s 4th year together with 3 recruiting classes to build their depth.

  121. LOL® January 28, 2010 11:53 am

Objectively though both JJ and Mac had to rebuild programs and while JJ is doing a great job the evidence doesn’t support that he is doing a better job than Mac.

JJ had a far tougher challenge at SMU though. 25 years of an absolute losing mentality even which he had to convince the players first, many of whom were not his recruits to believe in what he was trying to sell them. Some fell off the bus quickly and I think JJ had a short leash with players who did not follow his policies in that first year. So that first season, he not only had to deal with implementing a new system, he also had to start at the absolute lowest common denominator in changing the mindset of those players already within the system. The lightbulb went off when SMU won a tough game against UAB at the start of the ’09 season as the players saw for themselves what the coaches were saying.

Contrast this to what McMackin took over. A winning program. While we lost a great deal of key starters, we also had returning players who were part of a winning program. Many of the holdover coaches were also a part of the recruiting process for years so the level of continuity was there compared to the wholesale changes at SMU. No sane rational person expected another undefeated season but when you look back in retrospect at how up and down that 2008 season was including many scratch your head moments watching the sidelines, the coaching comes into play. How about the amount of time they spent during spring ball practicing from under center only to end up scrapping all that once it became apparent that the QB’s weren’t up to it at game speed. That was precious wasted time. Instead of keeping things simple, the staff from an offensive perspective decided to throw in way too many changes. This doesn’t even touch upon the QB carousel and the tweaks implemented which resulted in a hodge-podge offense very far from what they had practiced in spring/summer.

The payoff year in terms of comparisons will be year 3. For JJ and SMU, sure, on paper, it looked like 2008 was a repeat of 2007 (both 1-11 seasons). However, one has to look at the improvement in attitude and swagger. 2009, they actually won those tight games amidst the usual injuries which required inexperienced players to step it up. As a result, it looks like they will be hitting their stride in 2010. They really had a young squad which gained valuable experience on the field this past season. With McMackin and Hawaii, who the heck knows. There have been times where the team seems to have lost its swagger to the point where our home field advantage was not as huge as an advantage. The results will speak for themselves once the 2010 season comes and the weeks go by. What should be of noteworthy interest is that in an interview done sometime later in the 2009 season, JJ said that he thinks his team was around 2 years away from being at around the same level as his 2006-2007 UH squads. Contrast this with something which McMackin said (probably can be found on Garret’s quotes blog) is that he expects it to take 3-4 years to get things ironed out here. And like WassupDoc said, Mack isn’t going anywhere until the money is there to foot the bill for the remaining time on his contract.

Personally, I’m at the point where this whole thing needs to just be allowed to play out. Either McMackin turns this around pronto and gets us back to being competitive in the upper levels of the WAC as well as in OOC play or we continue playing this game of chicken where it will take whomever ends up taking over after his contract is up, another half decade to fix at which point, will we even be relevant in whatever changed football/athletic landscape will exist at that time.

How has UH’s reputation in academics and/or athletics gotten that bad in the mind of the athlete?

UH was never known for its academics. I started there as an undergraduate and didn’t know better until I transferred to UC Irvine after 2.5 years. This was during the 80’s and I had trouble getting into some ICS classes and would have to wait the next semester. Ridiculous. At Irvine, not only were the courses available but there was also a finer granular level of curriculum compared to what UHM had to offer. As for athletics, it depends. One cannot deny the appeal of prestigious programs steeped in traditions.

UHM’s demographic is also interesting. Part commuter, part local, part international (Asia-Pacific). The commuter part AND international students who have virtually zero interest in the sports programs results in a campus environment that is how should we say, lacking in a bigtime student driven atmosphere. While some bigger mainland college campuses have a similar demographic makeup (like UCLA), there is still a sembelance of student life on campus that is lacking at Manoa. Prospective recruits are keenly aware of this when making their visits but in the case of a local athlete, they are pretty much already aware of that as well as the numerous pitfalls of playing for the hometeam. This is just one small example of why it becomes attractive to go away. It isn’t always about the academics, the athletic programs. Sometimes it is just the surroundings and cultural change. This isn’t much different than a mainland recruit having substantial interest in coming to UH because the lifestyle and culture is so drastically different from where they came from.

What do we need to do to change this so that every top high school athlete in Hawaii will at least rate the UH program as one of their top 5 choices.

This is not just a UH problem. This is a state of Hawaii problem where we do not know how to invest in our future. Decisions made by the powers that WE, the people consistently elect into office, tend to make decisions which mortgage the future. Look at this whole furlough Friday thing for example. Why the hell are we mortgaging our best and brightest assets, our children’s education? Prior administrations are just as at fault as the current one. Current elected officials and union leaders should all be ousted for this fiasco. Another example; we build things and then fail to have at least a scheduled plan to maintain them which allows that infrastructure to fall apart before action is taken at which point, the costs in both time and economic factors are much higher than if done proactively from the start. Or the money is mismanaged in some way like how the former mayor decided to spend the bulk of tax revenues for beautification purposes first as opposed to prioritizing the aging physical infrastructure (eg. sewer). What you are asking for is changing the mindset of an entire culture which tends to be apathetic at best or does not like speaking up ahead of time so as to not “rock the boat” because such talk might be construed as being negative. Someone has to play the role of devils advocate every now and then to keep some sense of objectivity.

Wes Nakama’s blog seems a lot more scary to me – people seem to threaten the dude more than I’d like to see.
But anyways, very happy to hear The Beast is in the house. Not just because he’s Bulla’s son, but because he can play, he plays hard and he wants to be here and play for us.

Later this evening ‘The Beast’ and I will be speaking to a group of young men from a private school who are on a 2 day retreat at Kamehame Ridge. We are honored to have been invited, but you’ll love this….Ryan has a lot to share with these 10th graders, but he wanted to grab their attention quickly.

our family has been very blessed, so we decided that we will be offering them, all of them, a brand new plan for their cel phones, doesn’t have any start up or registration costs, and NO MONTHLY payments. it’s the latest 3G network….. and it’s catching on, slowly but surely.

i mean, who wouldn’t want a cellular plan with no registration fees, no long term contract, and no monthly charges…..HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE

    Aloha Everybody!

    Addaknowjoe –

Lucky I checked in…can’t miss the opportunity to wish A-Joe a very Happy Birthday!…any many, many more!! The “before” and “now” pictures are precious. Ladies (and guys too), if you are fortunate enough to be enveloped/embraced/bear hugged by this awesome gentleman, you will experience what it feels like to be warmly loved/welcomed. You will not regret it…even if you have to wait your turn in line.

    Rasu Begasu –

For some strange reason, I am not “turned off” by the description of you strutting around your house in your bibidees, t-shirt, vest and socks. Perhaps it is because you are not the only samurai-san who rules his castle with supreme confidence and the classic “eh, no bodda me” attitude. More power to you guy…I’ve said enough.

Coach June Jones who reads the WB blog everyday –

Job well done as evidenced by the Hawaii Bowl victory over Nevada…continue working your magic. The impact of your skills/talent as a coach will be measured by the positive paths your young charges will take as they look to the future. Good luck and continued success to you.

Well, there is a break in the steady rain in my valley. Good chance to take out the trash can before getting soaked.

    Have a great afternoon, everybody!

  134. Bulla January 28, 2010 1:03 pm

I am making a proposal to my state senator and state house representative. I would like to propose passage of a bill that would tax any mainland D1 football coach who flies to Hawaii. I’m a very nice guy actually. So I will ask all of the airlines that fly to Hawaii to give them a discount on airfare. However we will then put a surcharge of $100,000.00 per bag.

We will give them a discount on a rental car. But will charge them another $100,000.00 if they want a battery installed in that car.

We will also give them a discount rate at any of our local hotels, but will add another $100,00.00 surcharge if they need any water or electricity in the room.

While we encourage all of our local athletes to visit other schools, we will quarantine these prospective student athletes for three months after they return from their trip. We don’t know what STD’s they may have contracted while on their visit. Quarantine will be waived if the student-athlete agrees to commit to play for the University of Hawaii.

All local athletes who sign for Hawaii will be given 25 free tickets per game for friends and relatives throughout their career at the University.

Local athletes who play for the state university will also be guaranteed that any children or grandchildren of theirs will be granted free tuition to any of the state’s universities or colleges of their choice.

It will be called the “Warrior For Life” bill. Anyone willing to sign the petition?

    Na Koa Update

Na Koa has joined the rest of the business community and now accepts credit cards for memberships and donations. This is a quantum leap in how Na Koa is attmepting to do business.
Membership renewals start going out in the mail next week. Not a member (or even if you are) now you can go to the Na Koa website and join (or renew) using that credit card. Better if that credit card is linked to a frequent flyer program so you can join the Warriors at Army, Colorado, or Fresno.

I’ll be looking closely at our recruiting effort next week. Wishing….

From Don Weir Warrior FB Alum 72-73

A Tsaiko once posted on the blog that I should spread the Na Koa wealth of resources around. Well, membership has its rewards.

Let me, as a former Warrior, do it this way for NCAA purposes.

    Here’s a start.
You go on-line and become a Na Koa member or renew your membership (Kime level or above using the benefit opt out choice that puts your entire donation into Warrior Football) or if you come down to the Coach McMackin Warrior Football Recruit Review 2010 at the Hukilau to sign up and become a member or renew your membership (Kime level or above using the benefit opt out choice that puts your entire donation into Warrior Football) and I will buy your first beverage of the evening.

Let’s get into Spring Training Mode
You take me up on this offer (above) at the Koa level and above (see the Grid on the Website or the handout at the Recruit Review) I’ll buy your first beverage and I’ll also buy your dinner at the Hukilau on 02/03/2010 (salad/entree/dessert).

On-line Memberships must be completed by Noon on 02/03/2010

I support Na Koa and Na Koa is Warrior Football support

  178. bstunna2002 January 28, 2010 7:15 pm

Is it too late to RSVP for the cc tomorrow?

  179. Don Weir January 28, 2010 7:20 pm

    Neighbor Island and Mainland Supporters

You go on-line to join Na Koa and once you submit the membership form you are sent a confirmation e-mail. You have this e-mail when I am on one of the Neighbor Islands or on the mainland for a golf tournament or a Warrior game and/or Warrior reception and I will make good on the beverage offer if you have completed membership by noon of 02/03/2010.

    Spring Training Offer
You have that e-mail confirmation in hand when we meet and we will strike a deal with a certificate at a restaurant in your area.

  180. Ralph January 28, 2010 7:35 pm

it’s never too late to RSVP for the cc, Al just needs a count to save seats, we pay individually and only for those present. No money is loss if someone RSVP and doesn’t show up

Not sure if you saw my RSVP couple of days ago (for the cc). Just in case you didn’t…I’m a comin’ baby! As far as I know, they didn’t cancel this Furlough Friday.

  183. SteveM January 28, 2010 7:57 pm

protector — got you listed on my Events Calendar. I think I picked up everyone who RSVP’d on the blog as Al requested. Sorry if I missed any.

Then there are some who may have contacted Al directly…and then some CC regulars who never RSVP but usually show up are accounted for too… 🙂

  184. BG January 28, 2010 8:08 pm

Al…I’ll be there tomorrow @ Camellia’s. Betty can’t make it.

  185. BG January 28, 2010 8:21 pm

For folks like Justin and bhf2 who think Tormey and Shaw should be promoted over Miano, please share your specifics…I’m listening. I learned a long time ago that when I ASSUME it often breaks down into making ASS*U*ME. Specifics help me to understand…jumping to assumptions don’t.

IF it were Shaw or Tormey leaving (ASSUMING the rumor is true), are they leaving because they are moving to a better position? Could it be (as in Tormey’s case) that he wants to be a head coach again?

Or, is this just a rumor? If not, I’d like to be the first to thank the coach for his contributions and wish him well in the future.

    Two basketball teams
    Both with 9-12 records
2-6 and 3-5 in conference, neither with a conference road win
One draws 5,000 fans per game, the other 500
Both are even from the same city
But the perception of how successful these teams are is so different
And that’s just how it is

  187. BG January 28, 2010 8:33 pm

    BTW
If Mel does make the decision to leave, I would certainly wish him and his family a fond aloha. He worked hard for his pay…both he and Heffernan do in assisting so many athletes! In the early days, JJ lent his full support to Speed and Quickness to help out Mel…Rich M. is already financially set with his NFL pension, investments, relationships with businesses and Lori’s expertise.

Mel has put his heart and sweat into Hawaii. He and his family has put down deep roots here. I can imagine that it would be a very, very difficult decision for him to leave. Rich is the driving force behind Speed and Quickness, but Mel provides the substance.

It sounds like Kenny Turner did not get an offer from UH. UH wanted him to walk on and he isn’t interested in that.

Former Olympia RB Kenny Turner said he enjoyed his Jan. 23 weekend trip to Hawaii, but is doubtful he will be a Warrior.

The University of Hawaii did not offer Turner a scholarship. The Warriors were interested in him as a walk-on with the potential for a scholarship for the following season, but Turner is looking for a full scholarship.

Correction sir! One averages 3,500K and the other averages 600! 😉

BUT you are spot on about the perception of success between Na Wahine and the Bows.

It’s just frustration after frustration with the Basketball Bows. The more people get frustrated with a program, the more they want it to be successful, well most do. With the Wahine, the change in “mana” and the change in the attitude with the coaching staff and the players is evident. Attendance has gone up and TRIPLED compared to seasons past. Yes 600, 700, and even 1000 doesn’t sound like a lot, but compared to 150-250, it’s a world of difference and the ladies on the court and feeding off of what Coach Dana and her staff are doing.

With the Bows, not much has changed since last season, despite some off-season moves to improve field goal percentages, but alas, an unforutunate injury to Bill Amis and the on-going guessing game as to when Dwain Williams can return previously from off the court issues and physical injuries to the most recent unfortunate incident involving the death of a family member continue to reflect the uphill battle the men’s basketball team faces on a minute to minute basis.

But yes, two different teams and both are currently on different paths to what seems like different futures. Happy for one, but frustrated and painful for the other.

  226. Garret January 29, 2010 6:46 am

Phil Steele has an interesting article today about how many returning starters every D-IA team in the country has. Given that UH is tied for the least number of returning starters, I’m guessing that the preseason predictions will have UH somewhere in the middle of the WAC. BSU, Idaho, and Nevada have the most returning starters and they will probably be the top 3 with Fresno possibly in there too for the preseason picks.

Boise will bring back an NCAA best 23 starters from last years 14-0 Fiesta Bowl winning team led by Heisman candidate QB Kellen Moore who threw for 3536 yds (64%) and a 39-3 ratio last year. The Broncos only starter not returning from last year is CB Kyle Wilson.

Idaho had their best season since ’99 and will welcome back 18 starters including 10 back on defense.

Nevada returns 18 starters from last years 8-5 team including 9 back from an offense that avg 38 ppg anf 506 ypg.

You want it you got it. The perception for Hawaii is in the marketing, and area recognition of retention. If Hawaii is keeping the best, then that speaks great for the Hawaii recruiter. The area marketing for Hawaii is the Speed and Quickness, which for me that means Coach Miano, and the former high school coaches, Ron and Cal Lee. when I read last month that the best all pacific northwest this and that coming to Hawaii, after their visits, Dee and Pelluer, that tells me Shaw/Tormey are drawing great talent. Plus, they made big improvements in the oline and special teams last year. when I read Coach Aranda’s name in the paper going recruiting Hawaii’s top guns, I wonder why the hype is Aranda and not DC Cal Lee? Thats sending me the wrong vibe, and I’m not even a player. To me, gotta get a better mouthpiece going.

I totally understand about Mel. Looks good. Has great kids. Shows up and has a no handshake great job kinda job. Work early, work late. Very personable with the audience. So when I read ST telling that a UH guy said this and that about Mel, and no like use names, I’m thinking of a Associate Head Coach or Higher. Or somebody in Media. And just gets me to watching and wondering, who is in charge?

Coach, just the vibe, tells me he’s trying to keep his entire staff intact. Meanwhile, imo he’s got a crab under the legs of his ship on a pedestal, and the crab is digging away the foundation, not in his job description,
just in his nature. and for me only one guy fits that description. 0i get that perception from the ncaa/satele, and the no way Mel gonna go SMU, media releases in the last month; and we no get a hype man in media, Tombo and Justin are in the wrong jobs. and if i went back, i no get more examples. i don’t know any of this is fact, its just the A$$ U ME in me.

but all that is just guessing. i never check with free online crytal ball fortune teller. and since its not in my job description to fix this ship pedestal, and since nobody impotent cares …

  237. Pomai January 29, 2010 8:12 am

DPK a good one is AVG both for spyware and virus also Spybot is a good one, actually you should run a couple of them so that what one doesn’t pick up the other one will. Also both have a free personal version.

  240. madeinhawaii January 29, 2010 8:52 am

    DPK…

Avast is a decent enough anti-virus program BUT it is one of those anti-virus programs that are targetted by malware and often disabled. Most of the popular ones are.

I use Avast along with Spybot Search & Destroy to block most of the harmful stuff.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php <–malwarebytes puts out a pretty good removal tool.

  242. madeinhawaii January 29, 2010 9:15 am

Do NOT use two background ‘anti-virus’ programs at the same time. They could end up being worse than a virus on your system as they hog resources from each other.

One anti-virus with One or Two spyware/malware blocker is usually okay.

  243. madeinhawaii January 29, 2010 9:18 am

I don’t get it. Wasn’t he our S&C coach during our MOST SUCCESSFUL decade of Warrior Football?

Is there any other S&C coach in UH history that can claim that?

Mel’s kid hit the winning basket with 3 sec. on the clock last night. Had a video of Mel in the stands enjoying the game.

Good morning in Hilo! In true Tsaiko fashion, let’s discuss this as friends. You and I have always spoken straight-forwardly without raising blood pressures (too much)…let’s continue.

You, in your line of work knows all about building an argument based on facts. Whatever the facts are…gotta deal with them. However, I have problem with rumors, assumptions, and conjecture when NO supporting evidence is presented. At least you provided some background on your thinking…thank you. However, you be your own critic. Where in what you presented are there facts?

I learned a long time ago that, when supervising folks, it’s easy to find fault and criticize. It’s a lot harder to find the good that people do every day and thank them for it. Guess which method works better? That was a huge wake up call for me.

I’m not saying don’t criticize the FB staff when appropriate. They do need contructive feedback just like anyone else. But you were agreeing with Justin’s comment that had absolutely no facts presented. That looked like a knee jerk reaction.

    M-I-U ~

Recruiting is nasty business. Consider the BYU recruiting coach who told a young Hawaii recruit’s dad. “if your son goes thru with his visit to Notre Dame, his offer comes off the table!” The coach then purportedly went on to demean local kids in general, saying they cannot meet the academic rigors of ND.

The Hawaii recruit & father are enroute to ND & UW as I post this, which shows they could not be intimidated by BYU arrogance. This sad situation is gold for UH, who will benefit from BYU’s impending loss of recruiting goodwill in Hawaii & connected Polynesian families. All local families are connected…quietly word spreads from parent to parent, from recruit to their up and coming cousins. Aloha BYU. Tofa soifua Cougars.

Doesn’t that sound part racist, and part condescending?

The Warriors loss is SMU’s gain…..Coach Mel has devoted his and his family’s time to the Warrior football program all these years, what a blow to the program whoever made the decision to switch roles of the strength coaches. Good Luck to Mel and his family for all the years of helping our kids fulfill their dreams in athletics. We all know that you will be successful wherever you go!!!! Thank You for all you’ve done for the athletes.

I’ve only witnessed about 3 or 4 episodes but so much its OK. I mean its not brilliant but it convinced is growing on me. The bear is my favourite character so much inside sequence but Cleveland is amusing to he just needs to be much more active and stupid like peter. If that happened it is a a lot more successful display and it would have better reviews from critics. If not the creators would most likely give the present towards the bear i am not saying they will but i would if i was Seth Macfarlane. My favourite episode so much is birth of a salesman all of the other people are just OK. So if your a fan of Seth Macfarlanes creations I would propose this exhibit if your in search of a laugh on a Sunday night.
