I’m guessing again that UH does indeed have similar training to increase speed, quickness and explosiveness but does so in a not so intense compact time consuming regimen. I know they have some sort of intense beach conditioning for all athletes with one of the strength coaches.

I’m also guessing that UH incorporates additional strength training compared to Chad’s training routines.

Now that UH has in place an off/in season training program. I hope it becomes the culture of all athletes at UH. Don’t just go through the motions. Maximize your workouts. Don’t slack because your opponents will not be taking a day off.

#20 Kevin, interesting point about nutrition. From my days of eating at Hale Aloha cafe and seeing the football players’ trays at dinnertime, seemed like a lot of basic protein and carbs.

The only thing that has my head scratching about that figure of 12 ESPN televised games last year is that there was NO way Wahine softball was on an ESPN network 12 times.

I mean… we had nothing but radio and live stats through the Stanford Regional prior to the Tuscaloosa Super Regional and radio and live stats for the WAC tournament and the few games against Fresno State that was covered on their network.

I guess 12 times means ALL of UH sports overall?

I believe athletes from many major universities are attending private training camps. UH does have a training regimen for it’s athletes but like all universities it is voluntary. I guess when you are paying thousands of dollars at a private training facility you are more likely to train harder.

Composite bats have a break-in period, after repeated use, the performance of the bat increases. Older bats often exceed the manufacturers initial specs. Youth leagues such as Little League and Cal Ripken among others have placed a moratorium on composite bats at the start of this year. Only aluminum alloys and wood are now allowed.

So I guess its not a good sign that I went STRAIGHT to catcher in my first game and stayed there…

You know what I find disturbing is, that all last year it was reported that, rb/Alex Green was a ligit…6’2″/200+lbs….and now according to the previous blog on “measurables” according to Sportillustrated, or whatevah…he strunck to, (6’0″)…..what gives????

Re Football recruits – It’s all about the chemistry between coaches and players and players and players. Measurables and intangibles make a team.

I’m guessing you want to be on at least a “red-shirt” on scholarship with vacation one year.

Next is been a “grey-shirt” on scholarship later maybe semester or two.

Then comes that “preferred walk-on” list on the invitation from the coaches.

I think kids in Hawaii matures and develop late and need that few years of development.

You may not be drinking the KoolAid about diet and exercise, but something certainly has you convinced about P90X. Being in shape is only one aspect of athletecism. While P90X may make you ripped, thats it. How does this replace the other valuable aspects of NFL athletecism that training facilities like Ikei’s offer?

Speaking of people who could be called upon if a vacancy were to occur. There’s a former NFL lineman who is, I believe helping a private school with their o-linemen. He’s young, was a starter so would know much of the elite techniques. The question would be can he teach. But as there are no openings currently at Manoa and he is teaching at the HS level, maybe he can hone his skills such that if and when there is a vacancy, he could be asked.

I’m still worried about special teams. Can you imagine what Oregon does to practice their special teams efforts. Coach doesn’t have to hesitate calling a fake this or that, because there is such a confidence level in the ability to execute. We don’t have that level of confidence. talk about changing momentum. I believe that without that level of special teams play, Oregon would have lost by a greater number. Just imagine if we had that level of confidence in execution against BSU, CU, Tulsa..

NCAA #44 I agree that strength alone won’t get the job done, but I did say the girls have the talent which should have inferred that they can hit. Bat speed is important, technique will help generate bat speed but without strength all you’ve got is a good contact hitter.

Come out to the RWSS this season and enjoy the Na Wahine play. You’ll see some girls with good technique, form, etc. but the ball won’t go deep, while others will drive the ball high into the netting protecting the tennis courts.

Well, according to the on-line business site looks like the merger of Comcast/NBC Universal is creating a mega monster network, and will give ESPN a run for their money. Good deal because lately, it looked like ESPN has gotten too big for their britches; might work out really well for MWC and CUSA folks seeing how Comcast also owns VERSUS, etc. For all we know, might even send espn folks grovelling for more better paying exposure for those that they sorta laid to rest.

I posted about the ESPN Texas channel a couple of months ago, but the final numbers went from $12 mil/year to $15 mil/year since then…wow! The crazy thing is that ESPN will only get *1* live football game out of the deal–every year the game that Texas plays against a D-IAA school is on PPV, but now it will be on ESPN instead. All the top basketball games for Texas are also on the Big 12’s TV sports channel.

$20 mil from the Conference TV deal and $15 mil from ESPN…amazing. The nice thing is that the projections have the Athletic Department giving about $15 mil per year to their Upper Campus. To put that in perspective, UH’s Upper Campus gives over $10 mil to the Athletic Department.

The Communications department at Texas will get a huge boost…people who want to work in sports broadcasting will get a shot at working as an intern or full-time worker at the on-campus ESPN studio.

I’m happy that every school play, musical, concert, etc., will be on ESPN also–it is great for the arts to get that kind of visibility.

Non-athletic fare is likely to run for about three hours a day and include musical performances, plays, and documentaries by faculty members and students, Powers said. Details are yet to be worked out.

“This will be high-level, entertaining cultural, music, scientific, Discovery Channel, History Channel kind of stuff,” Powers said. “And we have a team put together working on it, and that will be done in collaboration with ESPN.”

UH can hopefully use the ESPN/Texas model to get a TV partner. I talked last season about how CBS College Sports needed content (they showed JJ’s show 10x per week and reruns all week of everything else), and CBS College Sports televises MWC games so UH will be with them in 2012.

With NBC/Comcast trying to create a competitor to ESPN, there will be a *lot* of opportunities for schools who can sell their content. Those schools will get money and visibility which will bring recruits…which brings wins and even more money. But those who wait too long will get left out since somebody will make the deals first.

No news is *not* good news for a certain OL who visited UH this weekend. There still are 2 more weekends for recruiting visits so we can still hope for the best.

Looks like the MWC changed their minds and will only have 8 conference games when UH joins in 2012. So, UH might have to look for 1 more nonconference game.

The Mountain West has settled on an eight-game conference football schedule for 2012 and 2013. Previously, Thompson had said he expected to play nine games for a full round robin.

Looks like Hawaii coaches will be flying to Washington to meet with Kendrick Van Ackeren on thursday according to Chris Fetters. Glad to see the coaches really making a strong effort.

I watched and talked to guys on the P90X program at the gym. It’s a very intense program which didn’t appear like it is something I could so for the long run. While they were in great shape I don’t believe any football team could rely on that type of program to get their players in football shape. Different positions and different body types require specialized workouts and those are best determined by the strength and conditioning coach.

I don’t know why so many college students feel compelled to leave a good situation (tuition-paid education, free beach, free surf, etc.) and put everything into training.

Adrian Thomas graduated in December so in his case it doesn’t matter. But when others leave to train before they graduate, how does that affect the APR? I know this was discussed before but I have a poor memory.

Some recruiting news. Hawaii just recently found out DB Will Davis from De Anza is on track to graduate and get his AA this year and he’s only a freshman.

He lead all of Juco in INTs with 8 and taking 2 to the house. Listed at 6-0 175 and runs a 4.45 40. Key is he has 3 years to play. Utah St. and Idaho seem to have a head start on him but I think Hawaii can get him with a late push.

Note that the competition isn’t as high as other conferences but he still dominated and made 1st team all state.

I looked at articles concerning the San Diego State athletic departments and could not find any specific numbers other than they were making up for their deficit by a combination of student fees and state tax money and donations. It appears this has been going on for many years. Is it safe for me to assume that the help from the state they were or still are getting doesn’t have to be paid back like at UH?

From what I’ve read, the *total* deficit that SDSU’s Athletic Department has comes out to $1.5 million. In response to that, they cut their spending in their Athletic Department *and* they are getting $2 million from Michigan for a body bag game + buyout for their coach. That will turn their deficit into a surplus. They *are* paying back their total deficit in a short period of time.

The State of California is NOT bailing out SDSU’s Athletic Department and they are not borrowing money from the state. There isn’t even the possibility that could happen because the state of California does not have a mechanism in place that would allow that. Similarly, UH is NOT borrowing money from the State of Hawaii.

SDSU *has* borrowed money from their Upper Campus, but $1.5 mil is far less than the $10+ mil that UH borrowed from its Upper Campus. And SDSU will pay that back in a matter of months.

In addition to having Michigan more than cover their deficit, SDSU also has a $5 mil donation from a *very* generous Athletic booster who want to upgrade their facilities and assistant coaching salaries. That money could go to paying off their debt…but Michigan is taking care of that for them.

The people happiest by the ESPN Texas announcement were in Texas’ Upper Campus. The University is going to be getting $15 mil or more from the Athletic Department (*more* than what ESPN will be paying Texas)…and they need it.

Remember all that talk about how UT-SA and TXST had lots of money to spend to upgrade themselves because the Texas budget was so generous to their Universities? That is *over*. California public Universities were hit badly the past few years, but Texas public Universities are quickly going to feel the pain as badly or worse. $2 billion in cuts and the closing of 4 community colleges is just the beginning…they still have to cut another $9.8 billion more and education is going to be cut again in a month or so.

Overall state appropriations for higher education for 2012-13 would be cut 12.7 percent, or nearly $2 billion.

Four community colleges would receive no state funding: Odessa College, Brazosport College, Frank Phillips College and Ranger College.

Coach Coolen was on the radio about a hour ago on 1420. I can hear the confidence in his voice and the excitement of the upcoming season. He says Robinson will replace Taualii at 1st base, Jenna Rodriguez will play RF, Makani will be the designated player, the new catcher is left-handed but hit right handed. The only position up for grabs is at second base. Jazmine Zamora is one of the candidates.

After watching the fall games and taking in a few practices, it was apparent that Sarah Robinson was the most improved player on the team with regards to non-starters from the previous year.

The assumption was that Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu would be the front runner but after a back and forth battle, Robinson edged her out and the Robinson name dons 1st base once again. Hitting a homer off her NFCA All-American sister at the alumnae game didn’t hurt S. Robinson either.

Makani returns to her old spot in 2009 as designated player. She had a good freshman season, won WAC Hitter of the Week once or maybe twice, had a few grand slams.

J-Rod had a shakey start last year at left outfield, but Coach Coolen knew what he had in her and had to find a place for her. Another player I thought would possibly take right outfield could have been senior transfer from Utah, Jasey Jensen. She had a good arm and made nice accurate/quick throws to 2nd from the outfield. Even the balls off the dirt found their mark at 2nd base.

Who’s gonna hit? Who’s gonna produce at the plate???

Starting line-ups at the beginning of the season is almost a lock for the “wait and see” approach. For sure you know what you’re going to get out of Majam, Iwata, Gonzalez, Aguirre, and Rodriguez at the plate, but for Coach Coolen it was a matter of a few shuffling considering the incoming talent he has.

Jazmine Zamora is going to be great for us over the next 4 years and Kaile Nakao has tremendous up-side as a great infielder. But again, you’ve still got Jessica Iwata and Melissa Gonzalez. Both Zamora and Nakao are 2nd base candidates along with Pagaduan, Jensen, and sometimes Aguiano (but she also can play SS). Zamora has long ball potential, a contact hitter (like Nakao), and when you see her in motion, quite the overall athlete.

The season is young and so many things can change. People forget that there were games early on in 2010 that Jessica Iwata and Jenna Rodriguez didn’t start or even play at all. Team chemistry is such a strong but fragile thing at times and you cannot really say what’s going to work until AFTER that first tournament on the road, but Coach Coolen’s decisions at this time are quite solid.

I think UH Softball is going to continue to be a National Power for many years to come. Coolen nt, rules, etc. And, like Dave Shoji I know Coolen is already recruiting for 2012 and even 2013 and has some recruits already. On top of that, he has proven to be a good judge of talent. I think UH Softball is going to continue to be a National Power for many years to come. Coolen has proven he can get top players from Hawai, Australia, and California and has a very nice pipeline to JCs too.

The biggest thing for Coolen and his recruiting efforts in what is essentially the only softball big recruiting pipeline (Cali) was the invite to the Big West. Coach Coolen expressed concern about the new WAC, which are essentially the same reasons Jim Donovan cited, with regards to the effect it will have on how he’s recruited for the program.

Now he can tell some of the best California softball players that they can come to Hawaii, get a free education, AND get to see friends and family back home quite often since all conference road games are back in their home state.

Coach Coolen never really relied on JC transfers either. Jenna Rodriguez was the program’s first impact JC transfer in a while, but she always wanted to play for Hawaii, but had to take the JC route and won a JC National Title at Yavapai in Arizona prior to her experiencing national stardom at the ESPYs with the Wahine.

The future is bright. The relationships with club programs are being forged further. Jordan Burton, a talented utlity athlete and a former clubmate of Kelly Majam joins the program in the spring of 2012 as does another California recruit Kayla Wartner.

Michigan Warrior coach said that out of the five yellow bats two where broken, the booster club was going to auction off the yellow bat that hit the homerun in Alabama but coach said he had to turn that into the “no clue at all” to test, and they do not return them, anyway during their testing they break the bat to see inside, so much for that idea…. Also he said he is going to put one of the bats in a dispaly case to hang up.

I watch the news daily, sometimes all day if I can. It does affect my mood too, now that you mention it. I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.

• Pro Bowlers will be practicing next door to me at the KHS stadium soon. They usually start at 8 AM. East team given 2 hours, followed by the West, from Mon-Thu.
