Odds behavior

In this post-Penn State world, UH officials did the right thing in alerting the police and NCAA about an anonymous accusation of wrongdoing by unnamed players.

In a time when school presidents, ADs and coaches are being held accountable — and fired —  for not fully pursuing accusations, it is no wonder officials have become Gladys Kravitz.

UH’s error was in mis-stating that an HPD investigation was being launched.

There is no investigation, and none is pending. This isn’t a case of Batman waiting for the Riddler to drop his next clue. HPD has made it clear, publicly and privately, there wasn’t  any credible proof to launch an investigation three weeks ago, a week ago, or yesterday.

UH still should forward any future accusations of misdeeds. That’s due diligence. This time, though, the unattended bag was not a shaving kit.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

    UH did what they had to do. Sadly, there now might be copycats out there that saw the firestorm an anonymous letter can start in no time at all.

    Makes one wonder if in the future coaches of heavy favorites will make sure to cover the spread just to avoid any accusations of point shaving against their players. Kick the field goal as time runs out instead of taking a knee, for example.

  13. Nike Football Cleats November 23, 2011 4:14 am

    Looks-wise the Nike soccer cleats haven’t changed dramatically from the first CTR boot, they retain the two tone New nike soccer shoes colour scheme with asymmetrical lacing and dampening pod technology. The upper of the Nike mercurial soccer cleats Maestri II football boots is still constructed using Nike Mercurial Superfly unique Kanga-Lite material, a synthetic leather which provides optimal comfort, fit and performance in all Mercurial Vapor Superfly weather conditions.

  14. Nike Football Cleats November 23, 2011 4:16 am

    The design brief for the nike CTR360 Maestri II football boots, Mercurial Vapors was to create the ultimate ball control boot. To achieve this Nike Football Cleats have retained the dampening pods which were such a stand-out feature of the first generation of Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly boots, just with some minor modifications, yet the theory of cushioning the ball and applying more Mercurial Vapor Superfly 3 boot surface area to the ball still applies.

    99club,

    The WAC does *not* get any extra money for any games that ESPN picks up for national broadcast. They can pick any and all of the WAC’s games for no additional payment. ESPN only pays extra if a game is moved from Saturday to another day. ESPN could show every Saturday game at Aloha Stadium this season for free if they wanted.

    From what I understand, ESPN pays nothing extra for ESPN3 streaming. Conferences *want* their games streamed online for their fans to be able to see and ESPN owns the streaming rights as part of their TV contract.

    Exciting finish to a strange season! Best of luck to our Warriors against Tulane. Revenge the Hawaii Bowl loss! And what could be better (not to get ahead of ourselves) than a decisive battle against our long-time rival BYU to determine our Hawaii Bowl fate.

  21. Garret November 23, 2011 5:01 am

    I haven’t posted anything about the rumor that popped up yesterday because I figured it was best to let UH and the authorities go through the process before jumping to conclusions. I don’t think it can be concluded that something bad happened and I don’t think that it can be concluded that nothing bad happened…

    Upsets happen all the time. College football is completely unpredictable. That said, what is being alleged isn’t point shaving–it is throwing games. The money line movement in Vegas during the week UH spent there (16:1 to 7:1) was highly unusual, but is not proof. Big money is made from the money line when a team is a big underdog, not on the point spread.

    Maybe some people who watched UH practice or worked at the hotel got word about certain injuries that UH had that were not being revealed to the media? Injury information is gold to gamblers and can result in betting lines moving in any sport. We know about how certain players (Moniz, Paredes, etc.) have been playing with injuries this season, but back when UH was staying in Vegas for a week the general public might not have known about certain injuries.

    I’m just throwing out an alternate explanation (which I haven’t seen posted anywhere) for why the money line could have moved so significantly. The gamblers in Vegas pay huge money for information on injuries/illnesses, so there were probably a lot of people watching the team closely to look for information that could give an edge.

    Did Greenwood panic?? Why after almost 3 weeks?? If making the public announcement was necessary, why not when the letter was first received Nov 3?? The school notified the police about this letter so it wouldn’t be considered “covering up” anything. This was a HUGE mistake, especially after HPD told them it wasn’t going to investigate. It’s a blackeye for the entire university, not just the football team.

    Not so smart Greenwood. We can also wait until after the BYU game to see what will happen with you for this bonehead move.

    Morning, everyone!

    Weird feeling so far this week.

    Excited with anticipation that our Warriors will take care of business and come out victorious this weekend.

    Kinda bummed that our Bballers (Warriors and Wahine) are struggling on the boards and getting out-shot on FG attempts.

    Wahine Vball gave us a little scare, toying with Fresno State last night.

    And then the smugness of some (local) people everywhere online, as this anonymous allegation popped up… jumping to (“I told you so,” or “That justifies the season”) conclusions, pointing fingers at coaches and players, and talking crap about the whole program, before anything is even verified. People are so quick to vilify and chastise these days.

    Anyways, the week is half pau. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving tomorrow, and a safe and sane Black Friday Warrior Weekend.

    Wafan… good thing was warm… that would’ve been a ton of snow!!! Stay warm and dry!

  27. Don Weir November 23, 2011 6:12 am

    Garrret,

    Great point about injuries being a goldmine of information. Jim Fey is the local RAIDERS scout in San Diego and attends all Chargers games. His main job is to scout the rookie players, the special teams, and to report injuries and who is not suited up on the sidelines. For this he gets two loge seats to every game, 2 superbowl tickets, $500 per game scouted, RAIDERS home game tickets in the box if requested, and a bonus if he spots a special teams breakdown that results in a block or fumble the next game. Not a bad gig!!

    The purpose of this post is to put any suspicions about the UNLV point spread/moneyline moves to rest. Please click on my handle to be taken to Vegasinsider dot com which has a record of all the line moves. Scroll down to see the ‘consensus’ lines.

    9/11: Hawaii minus 17. There was no moneyline option yet as those numbers always come out later in the week.

    9/15: Hawaii backers drove the line up to Hawaii minus 20.5. The UNLV moneyline was set at the highest: +900. NOT +1600. That proves the tweet was either inaccurate or a fabrication.

    9/17: Hawaii minus 17. All the Hawaii money had dried up and the line settled back down to the original opening number. The UNLV moneyline? +700.

    Bottom line: Just normal line moves to be expected with a TON of Hawaii backers in town betting on their home team.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    There is a reason why some activities are verboten in this era.

    While smoking is deprecated, the activities most harmful to the human soul and/or civilization include forgetting God, drinking alcoholic beverages, gambling, taking drugs, and most of all, gossip and backbiting.

    Lokahi and Aloha are proclaimed good for the individual and humanity and something we can actively strive for.

    Like teens who are certain they know everything and their parents are stupid, humanity likes to experiment and test the limits… especially when they still benefit from the labors of others. But when the full responsibility of having to live with the consequences of bad choices kicks in, we will all suffer like we have never suffered before.

    Conversely, if we choose to embrace a path of truthfulness, trustworthiness, unconditional love, compassion, excellence in all things, purity, chastity, and moderation… And dedicate our creative and occupational efforts to the betterment of theworld of himanity… We will be building a foundation for a wonderful future for our moopuna and theirs.

    Just saying that we can choose how we want to be. And strive.

    Aloha and Lokahi!

    Go Warriors!

    Just my opinion, if there was a “credible” allegation I would agree def, that it should have been forwarded to HPD. This was an anonymous letter sent without any supporting evidence. I believe part of due diligence is making a determination regarding credibility of the claim. I think UH pulled the trigger to fast and this could damage our schools image, morale, and bottom line (i.e. ticket sales).

    The Western schools are forming their own division, which means that they will only be playing schools in the East 1 or 2 times per season.

    The closest Big East schools for Boise will be in California, Texas, and possibly Colorado. They are a little less than 1900 miles away.

    Just a thought about the insidious letter and rumor. which popped up yesterday’s blog. My theory is that Jeezy33 and Uce 2 cooked up the anonymous letter and sent it in. That would fit, wouldn’t it? Their desired “ends” would justify their despicable and fictitious means. Then, like arsonists who stick around to admire their handiwork, they “work” the blog. And in the case of a blog like this, they can “stoke the fire” with additional comments to assure the flames will not die out too soon. Just a theory which happens to fit…

  41. Garret November 23, 2011 7:14 am

    Very interesting (and thorough) analysis of the point spread movements for all UH games this season.

    When big money bet against team, team losses ATS.

    Big money against Hawaii moved the line 3-points or more FOUR TIMES. Big bettors fading Hawaii won 3 times, lost 0 times, and pushed 1 time.

    Conclusion: Data does not support rampant game fixing.

    http://pregame.com/sports/stories/b/news/archive/2011/11/22/college-football_3a00_-hawaii-point_2d00_shaving-allegations-examined-195200.aspx

  42. Garret November 23, 2011 7:16 am

    This points out just how bad the UNLV loss was–there have been 226 games where a team was favored by 17 or more points this season.

    The teams favored by 17 or more points won 217 out of the 226 games this season.

    Aside from UH vs. UNLV, no team favored by 17 or more points lost the game by more than a TD.

  43. Garret November 23, 2011 7:20 am

    99club,

    The FCS playoffs are a good example of how ESPN doesn’t pay extra for ESPN3 broadcasts. ESPN paid for the TV rights to the FCS playoffs, but chose *not* to show the Montana and Montana State games on any ESPN channel…they are on ESPN3 only. Montana legislators are upset that this prevents many Montana residents from seeing the games.

    http://billingsgazette.com/sports/college/big-sky-conference/montana-state-university/football/montana-politicians-join-chorus-against-espn-broadcast-plans/article_1b7891f6-89a7-5e56-acae-d080aa9fd131.html

  44. ewagirl November 23, 2011 7:24 am

    Does anyone know what channel ESPN3 is?

  45. Garret November 23, 2011 7:24 am

    ESPN gets paid every month for every broadband internet subscriber that has access to ESPN3. That means that every Time Warner (Oceanic), AT&T, and so on customer who gets ESPN has part of their internet bill going to ESPN every month. ESPN has rights to put those games on ESPN3 without paying any extra money.

    When you think of all of the UH (Idaho, NMSU, SJSU, etc.) games this season that have been on ESPN3 and not on any of the ESPN channels, ESPN is getting that ESPN3 content for free and is getting paid by the cable/DSL/fiber optic providers. It costs ESPN nothing for the streaming rights, it costs ESPN almost nothing to stream the games through their servers, and they get paid huge amounts of money from every internet provider…and the ones that don’t pay cannot show the games to their customers.

    Without having a deal with ESPN, the MWC will is off ESPN3 except for a nonconference road games.

    SDSU has always been an underachieving program IMHO. Great location, nice weather, improvements to their athletic facilities, lots of HS and JUCO talent in the area. If I recall correctly, they were pushing hard for Pac-10 admittance years ago, but the idea of a Cal State School coming into the conference didn’t appeal to the UC schools.

  50. Bleed Green and White November 23, 2011 7:41 am

    Stupid, how darn stupid!

    That’s pretty much all there is to say about “Black Tuesday” at the University of Hawaii.

    All that, national headlines and tons of ill will over an anonymous letter. Nice job.

    Isn’t it the administration that’s supposed to be the smart people?

    Instead, how stupid does Greenwood, Donovan, Board of Regents et all, look at “Ugly Wednesday”?

    Aint that a shame?

  51. A-joe November 23, 2011 7:51 am

    Keep in mind, UH was not accused of “withholding” injury reports. Players were accused of “Points Shaving.” “Players” being the key. Not coaches. Not referees or a “singular” player.

    Now, for any points shaving scam to work, there needs to be an entity that has a clear will to manipulate a contest’s outcome. Like a dominant boxer who throws a fight. Or a referee who has the ability to influence the outcome.

    When a points shaving scam depends on two or more entities to be involved, the outcome becomes too risky. Too many variables to consider. Anything can happen. The odds of winning a bet becomes worse.

    UH is nowhere near being a dominant team this year. Let alone, possessing the ability to will any game’s outcome. To suggest player involvement would insinuate 2/3 of the team’s participation. That’s offense, defense and special teams. That would require a strategic, calculated, coordinated effort to pull off such a feat. Brah, UH can’t even coordinate a decent blocking scheme on field goals! As first stringers would get hurt, the second stringers would have to be clued in to the scam.

    There’s no way anything like this could happen. (Thank God for sensible HPD investigators who don’t fly off the handle)

    I love these kids representing us each and every week. But, to pull off a consorted scam like this? Come on now. Let’s be realistic here. They’re good kids. But they’re not THAT good.

  52. Garret November 23, 2011 7:52 am

    Looking at SDSU’s situation, if they go to the Big East’s Western Division for football and the Big West for all other sports, their student-athletes actually will have less overall travel time than they would have in the MWC…thanks to the huge decrease in travel for them in the Big West.

    SDSU also could help improve the Big West’s RPI, which benefits UH.

    SDSU internet fan forums conducted polls and found that 75% of SDSU fans there preferred the Big East/Big West over the MWC. Local sports radio that I’ve heard when driving around has been 100% in favor of leaving the MWC for the Big East/Big West.

  53. Garret November 23, 2011 7:54 am

As first stringers would get hurt, the second stringers would have to be clued in to the scam.

    A-Joe nicely summarizes why a massive inside scam involving numerous UH players really isn’t realistic. I cannot believe that people from all 3 units could be involved and nobody would find out before now.

  58. Garret November 23, 2011 8:06 am

    I think that people are specifically pointing the finger at Moniz because he remains upbeat during wins and losses. On the sidelines during games and even after losses, he doesn’t let things get him down. That can be interpreted that he doesn’t care, but Moniz was the same way last season…maybe remaining consistent in his demeanor is how Moniz keeps cool under pressure.

    One example of a complaint about Moniz’s demeanor was posted by Vaughn Meatoga’s Dad after the UNLV game. To be fair to Moniz, he had this same upbeat personality last year when UH was consistently winning and beating the spread.

    I agree that UH stating that the HPD was launching an investigation when in fact they were not was a *huge* error that has tainted UH’s reputation and will not go away for years. I’m not going to post again on this subject unless more news is released…and not just anonymous rumors.

    I know braddah was all big smiles in the plane when we left Vegas till one of the passengers yelled ” What the @#$% are you smiling about?” Then braddah put his head down , found his seat and became invisible for the rest of the flight. Don’t even remember seeing him when we reached Oahu.

    Everyone’s so quick to criticize…maybe the info got leaked and decided to announce it themselves rather than have it run as a rumor. I’m not trying to defend anybody, but we don’t always know the whole story and I’m kind of tired of everyone always being so quick to call for heads to roll. It’s irresponsible.

  60. funny November 23, 2011 8:11 am

    A point shaving scheme would in no way have to involve 2/3 of a team’s active participants. A few players at key positions would be enough. Maybe a DB who would slip at an inopportune time in an obvious passing down. A QB to throw a couple of picks or miss receivers on key passing downs. A RB to suddenly get a case of ‘fumble-itis’. That’s it.

    Concerning ESPN3, I’d like to know how UH measures up against other mid-majors (and D-IA football, as a whole) on nationwide eyeballs on their streams. Also, what would be considered a respectable number of viewers for that time slot. Would be interesting to see how many tune in via computer, since they already have a formula for what is successful for tv broadcasts.

    And no, I’m not asking for # of viewers of a live UH game vs. a rebroadcast of a BCS conference game. Just would like to know if there’s any info out there as far as ESPN3 is concerned, and the amount of viewers we might have for each ESPN3’d game.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    I understand there are quite a number of “comp” tickets for the UH Team Banquet. Just curious who gets comp and how many comp tickets are out there.

  77. Really November 23, 2011 9:01 am

    It is just as ignorant to automatically call point shaving allegations crazy or complete nonsense as it is to jump on the bandwagon and believe it happened immediately. Most of the people on this board fall in the former catagory. The reactions mirror our society right now with it’s polarization and hard right or hard left lean. I am sitting in the middle on this one, and I don’t think it is over yet. I hope 120 percent it is not true, and right now it looks like it PROBABLY isn’t, but where there is smoke there is usually fire and I’ll keep rooting on the team and am excited about watching Graves grow as a leader and winner, BUT and this is a big but…….. I would not be surprised at all if this ugly story comes out again later down the road. It is doesn’t we are all the better that is for sure!

    The other thing with something like this is that there are 432 student athletes at UH and everyone of them has had their names tarnished by this. That is why I think that if this was all a scam then they need to find out who did this and punish them to the max. They are messing with a lot of innocent kids.

    I know in Basketball point shaving has been done. In football I haven’t heard.

    But if you had a QB who got paid to miss certain passes, it wouldn’t guarantee an outcome, but you are paying to hope that you get some kind of edge. I don’t know if the chinatown-crew would pay money for that though.

  97. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 23, 2011 9:38 am

    We have season tickets for both men’s & women’s basketball. The double-header games starting this Friday allow women’s season ticketholders to stay for the men’s games in specific seasts while men’s season ticketholders can attend the women’s games fo’ free.

    Tht means we have two women’s tickets per doubleheader + a seating ticket – not an entry ticket – for the men’s game. If you want them, send me an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com. Be sure to include your real name and a contact phone number because I need to explain how the systen works.

My hub called me this morning from LA and was saying he had a nice chat with Riki Elinson about who would be good candidates for Hawaii. Hmmm…he had some interesting names.

  100. DownSpout November 23, 2011 9:59 am

    Now that the whole world knows there wasn’t an investigation, why don’t they release the letter?

  101. d1shima November 23, 2011 10:12 am

    😳

    HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The NCAA says it’s taking point-shaving allegations involving University of Hawaii football players seriously and has been in contact with the school since early this month.

    The association says in a statement Wednesday it’s “extremely concerned” about the allegations.

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/16112446/ncaa-probing-hawaii-point-shaving-allegations

  102. markazulu November 23, 2011 10:13 am

    What about the coaches? Do they have anything to do with this???

  103. kev-1 November 23, 2011 10:13 am

    #103 DownSpout . . . here it is:

    Dear UH Admissions,

    I know you guys don’t have anything to do with the athletic department or football team, but I am sending you this letter to address a concern I have regarding the outcomes of some football games this year. The reason I have chose you to send this letter to you is because it is the reason I will be unable to pay my tuition next semester.

    DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH MONEY I HAVE LOST ON UH FOOTBALL LATELY?

    My concerns are as follows: There are certain football players who are shaving points to prevent the team from covering the spread. Who? I don’t know, but they must be because I’m broke now. This has been happening since last year. Do you have any idea how much money I lost on the game against Tulsa in the Hawaii Bowl? Someone must have done it then too. But again, I can’t say who.

    Please address these concerns and also please excuse me from my tuition and fees for the upcoming semester, as I would not be broke if UH was winnning.

    Sincerely,

    I can’t tell you that because then you may contact me to verify this claim, which I can’t do, so I guess I’ll just sign . . . Anonymous?

  104. d1shima November 23, 2011 10:26 am

    Keep this in mind:

    Jerry Tarkanian: The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they put Cleveland State on probation.

    Oh boy…if I was a PR student at UH, I would be licking my chops for a case study at the end of the semester. I did several of my PR case studies based on UH Athletics back in the early 90s. 🙂

    We are back to where we were at this time yesterday…with plenty of room on the bandwagon and a great bunch of kids to support. So…get your tickets for this Saturday (didn’t ST have some fantastic Black Friday ideas?) and December 3rd. And don’t forget your seats for the Waterhouse Memorial Football Awards Banquet: http://nakoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2011-NK-Banquet-Registration_generalR3.pdf Happy Thanksgiving!

  109. Old School Dave November 23, 2011 10:35 am

    Remember back in the 99 or 2000 season when a bunch of drunken gamblers who lost their paychecks were yelling stuff at the UH players as they returned to the locker room? Coach Dennis McKnight took exception to that nonsense and called them out. The drunken gamblers tried to make big body/touch guy, but they would have gotten pummeled by McKnight.

    i swear that curtis da bull iaukea had real scars from real lacerations that spewed real blood from the matches with nick bockwinkel. although i must admit that while surfing next to those guys at canoes, i thought that the humorous banter i overheard between them and lord tally ho blears were fake.

  111. papajoe2 November 23, 2011 10:46 am

    Anybody remember Art Sch______ (?) awhile back that wrote a book about NFL players fixing games for the gamblers? Said something like $800k to the qb, defensive captain or was it the coordinator, and somebody else. You just needed to call the wrong formation for the situation and would lose the game or spread with everyone playing hard. In those days $800 was huge money. I think that it was brushed off by most everyone as the person invloved’s character was shady. He was a QB in the NFL but wasn’t very good. I could be wrong on some of this info. as I can’t remember it clearly but, I do know that it was the last straw that made me quit betting of football games.

  112. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 10:47 am

    Just for future reference: Point-shaving is only a misdemeanor in Hawaii. Why? Because gambling is illegal here. It would be like someone complaining that his marijuana was stolen.

    Also, if someone were to have credible evidence about a wrongdoing, such evidence should be sent directly to the HPD, not UH’s admissions office. Might even get a CrimeStoppers reward out of it.

  115. al November 23, 2011 10:58 am

    what it is…the state of hawaii has more gamblers per capita, in my estimation.

    gambling is an inherint cultural upbringing that stems from all of the immigrants who migrated from the asian belt to work the plantations. japanese, filipinos, et al all came from countries where gambling is a huge part of their past.

    it is natural to hear folks even in this generation to yell out, “juice!”, “fixed” and the like. it is interesting that in hawaii folks tend to bet more in one direction than another. well, typically it is like that nationwide, too. the house determines the betting line with more skill and craftiness than the average joe.

    hearing cries of a fix or juice is not uncommon. i’ve heard these cries all my life. many folks were saying this very stuff amongst those at the water cooler come monday morning.

    but, really isn’t it just that we are more disgruntled in the outcomes of the games. whenever our team loses we all are “not feeling good”. this season more than others for me has been one of frustration as we have squandered so many opportunities.

    is it fate, bad luck, weaknesses, or the fact that we should have easily been a 9-2 team at this point.

    forgive me for bringing this up and before anyone can blast me…let it be known that i am not laying blame on our student/athletes. i can see that they are out there working their tails off day in and day out. they are the real victims in all this. they just haven’t been given the “tools” to work with to become successful on the field.

    …nuff said

    it is the lack of dorms coupled with the lack of nearby college student conducive/affordable housing that makes us a commuter college.

    I find it kind of sad how most of the fans aren’t concerned at the actual possibility but just want everything to be tossed…

    If any of this is true, I want whoever is involved to be punished.

    I find it odd that investigation has closed on the same day the news broke the story. Common sense tells me that investigations usually take longer than 1 day.

    For a story like this to break, it would take a little more than 1 anonymous letter for UH to release a statement.

    I hope these allegations are false… But at the same time, I am keeping an open mind and if there are players involved, I hope they get caught.

    I know way too many cover up stories over the years to be naive at this point

  130. Bulla November 23, 2011 11:25 am

  132. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2011 11:29 am

    Wasn’t the investigation going on since the 3rd?

    I think a couple of weeks is long enough to spend on a anonymous letter which seemed to contain very little info.

  133. Bryson November 23, 2011 11:31 am

    Jeezy33,

    I find it sad at how many people had the told you so attitude when these allegations were announced…I think people kept a level head based on the condition of anonimity of the letter writer and the fact that no names were mentioned in specific…Then there were those who want so bad for something to be wrong with the program so that Mack can be replaced before his final contract year… What also makes me sad is that so called fans on other boards are making fictitious claims against a student athlete who paid for school his first 2 semesters and walked on to the football team….

  134. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 11:32 am

    Jeezy:

    UH officials were told in early November there was no investigation.

    After yesterday’s meeting, they were told again.

    They’ve known for three weeks the matter was dead.

  135. madeinhawaii November 23, 2011 11:32 am

    al,

    What you saying? Nah! You no can drown.. …Dey say dat alcohol and fat is lighter than water…

  136. Couch potato November 23, 2011 11:34 am

    jeezy33, trust me, the investigation took more than one day, two at least. lack of evidence. what more is there to it? one can only assume that the letter was too generalized and did not provide specific plays during the game where the point shaving could have taken place.

    unless you or anyone out there have further evidence then what more can HPD do? do a DNA analysis on the letter and envelope?

    there’s nothing to be naive about. we can only speculate and offer opinion but without hard facts and evidence what better way to use our energy than to support the team.

  137. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 11:34 am

    My take on the Vegas game is:

    1) The opening line was way too high.

    2) The offense was struggling, and it just lost Sean Shigematsu and Miah Ostrowski.

    3) UH struggles when it spends a week in Vegas.

    4) Phillip Payne.

  138. LizKauai (iPad) November 23, 2011 11:36 am

  140. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2011 11:36 am

    Point shaving accusations that get pinned on Mack because he is the HC is bull.

    I have my own reasons why I want a new coach but his integrity is NOT one of them.

    I feel horrible for the team and program, but I also feel bad for Mack should he get any bad press for this.

  141. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 11:37 am

    By the way, the uncertainty about McMackin’s future and this latest incident have hurt recruiting.

    UH just lost a commit to Colorado.

    And another top prospect canceled his upcoming visit.

  142. LizKauai (iPad) November 23, 2011 11:38 am

    you mean santa isn’t going to get me a new hdtv?

  145. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 11:41 am

    I am just saying a part of me thinks the the allegations are possible. I am very open minded. I know we don’t live in a perfect world. We are just like any other university.

    If anything did happen, I feel cheated as a fan. Nothing to do with my dislike for McMackin. He is obviously not involved. And IF it is true, I would feel very disgusted for the other players on the UH football team who had no idea because they are getting cheated the most.

    At the end of the day, this could very well be all false. Who really knows. But if someone does know something, I rather see the guilty get what they deserve. Even if that means our football program would have to start over. I hope if this is false, the people who started it come clean or get caught and come forward as well…. Having no closure to this situation is just awful though.

    341 related articles from major news media and sports related media companies. What more proof do you need?

  155. madeinhawaii November 23, 2011 11:55 am

    IMHO, they should have brought the allegations to light as soon as they got the letter. If it was indeed happening, it would have put as stop to it immediately, and the Warriors may have gone on to win the last couple of games. If it wasn’t happening, it wouldn’t have mattered. … just saying.

    Me, I don’t think it happened. But I really don’t like how some people are pointing fingers at a specific player. Utterly uncalled for.

  156. madeinhawaii November 23, 2011 11:56 am

    al,

    I went to a couple of games last season. This season we have no day offs coinciding with a game, except for away games.

  157. funny November 23, 2011 12:03 pm

    “341 related articles from major news media and sports related media companies” Ummmm, stop exaggerating. It is 341 related articles where is it mentioned, not 341 related articles from major news media and sports related media companies. That 341 number includes mentions on obscure blogs and many of the headlines/articles speak about HPD NOT investigating because of a lack of evidence. The hysteria should be more of a cause of embarrassment than the uncorroborated allegations.

    AP, Fox News, ESPN, SI all gave articles about the investigation.

    Google, it’s a beautiful thing.

  159. funny November 23, 2011 12:12 pm

    159, my remarks in this thread called for national headlines in response to other readers making the claim that UH was mentioned in “national headlines” as a result of this point shaving non-investigation.

  160. funny November 23, 2011 12:13 pm

    Articles do not equal national headlines.

  162. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2011 12:18 pm

    Uhh well if you looked under Headlines on ESPN it listed an article about the point shaving probe. It only changed 4 hours ago to “no probe”…

    So since posted this several times already and I linked that to you earlier in its original form, maybe you can go get a dictionary and look up the word headline.

  163. Really November 23, 2011 12:22 pm

    Jeezy gets it. No one wants it to be true and we all believe it most likely not true (me included) but putting your head in the sand and being loyally blind to anything going around you is exactly why we are paying a guy a million a year to have to win his last two games to make his OWN Bowl game with the worst schedule in college football in the worst conference in college football in a half empty stadium with recruits leaving an already poor to non-existent class. As far as point shaving, I said it before, I hope this to be 110 percent true but nothing surprises me anymore and never will again. Don’t rush to defend and don’t rush to convict, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle and I’ll just wait and watch. I don’t think it’s gone away forever though.

  164. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 12:32 pm

    Really:

    Did you mean true or untrue?

  165. A-House November 23, 2011 12:34 pm

    al:

    doing fine!

    way back then, we had a paper delivery route, but all $$ went to family expenses for gas, car insurance, etc.

    u goin visit our tailgate again?

    one Tsaiko brought big kine tako and uhu for grill – yummy for da tummy!

  166. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 12:36 pm

    167, because anyone who believes it’s possible that anything can go bad in the UH program is considered a troll right?

    He obviously meant untrue.

  167. A-House November 23, 2011 12:37 pm

    is there a consipracy to under mine UH football program? jus askin!

    too bad one commit goin to Colorado now and another canceled his visit – guess no faith in the school and Warrior football – hope players make a greater commitment on the field this Sat and next!

  168. funny November 23, 2011 12:38 pm

    Last night the ESPN article said no investigation, nice try. I’ve been to ESPN, CBS SPORTS, Fan nation, SB Nation, CNN, MSNBC/NBC Sports, Fox News, Fox Sports and USA Today and only ESPN and USA Today (college fb section) had it prominently mentioned and both clearly stated that it is a non-investigation.

  169. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:39 pm

    Really?, you really contradict yourself. really!

  170. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 12:40 pm

    To elaborate, nothing can be 110% true (or false). 100% is the maximum.

    Secondly, an ANONYMOUS letter was sent alleging actions by UNIDENTIFIED players. As far as I know, there was no accompanying video, tape recording, photos, affidavits, confessions or anything else to corroborate the allegations. What is there to investigate? Who is there to investigate? There are hundreds of unsolved cases on the books. I rather have HPD work those REAL cases, then chase rumors in the wind.

    Thirdly, it is not blind faith that makes me disbelieve these stories, but it is faith. Faith in the team. Faith in the players. Faith in the coaches. Absent something MORE than mere RUMOR, that is enough for me.

  171. Derek November 23, 2011 12:40 pm

    Jeezy33, we’ve got 3. A QB named Ikaika Woosley from I think San Francisco CC. I think he’s coming in in January for spring practice. Otherwise the cupboard is empty compard to other programs, sad to say. It’s really too bad because the recruiting is the life blood of the program. We are desperately in need to quality offensive and defensive linemen and a strong kicker.

    I’ve been silent and just reading and listening to everyting that’s been going on recently. Man, people are getting to be like vultures hoveing overhead. Am I surprised that it came out. No. Is it going to go settle down? Maybe for now all quiet on the Western front, but I think I feel that time will tell what happens. Nobody knows what the future is. I hope nothing happens. That said, people will remember Murphy’s Law.

  172. huh November 23, 2011 12:44 pm

    time for a break in the action…how about a fishing tale?

    these fishermen catch a bluefin ahi, the most prized of all the sashimi ahi, that is nearly 900 lb and probably worth close to $400,000.00.

    in the end, this is what happened to their catch.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/Massachusetts-fishermen-snare-881-pound-tuna-but-feds-take-it-away-112311/

    leave it up to the government…at least they won’t have a huge tax bill.

  173. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:44 pm

    and there is no gray matter in the truth. either it is the truth or not the truth.

  174. Make_A_Wish November 23, 2011 12:44 pm

    Find the guy that sent the anonymous letter. Then put him in a room with a few UH Warrior Football players. I’m sure the braddahs would want to give him a piece of their mind and a few other things. Hehehe…

  175. al November 23, 2011 12:46 pm

    did you mean a fishing tail?

    some agency is having a great sushi party.

    hahahaa.

  176. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 12:48 pm

    Okie dokie, gotta bring out the peace pipe.

  177. al November 23, 2011 12:48 pm

    this season has not been without blackeyes.

  178. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:48 pm

    funny, you write like warriorsun or hawaiiansun. how you doing?

  179. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2011 12:48 pm

    All we have right now is a baseless claim about illegal gambling related activities that is unproven, without concrete evidence.

    We have much bigger internal issues to deal with.

    This is a public relations issue, not football.

  180. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 12:49 pm

    It baffles me how no one here wants to know the truth….

    It’s so 1 sided.

    If this were on going at another school, this board would 100% believe it.

    But this is Hawaii and it is impossible for anything bad to happen here.

    Is it so hard to just keep an open mind.

    This situation isn’t going to disappear over night and the I trust the truth will come out eventually. Till then, I can’t jump to a conclusion

  181. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 12:49 pm

    See, Derek, you say “Am I surprised that it came out. No.” What is “IT”? Seriously, what is “IT”?

    You use of “it” means that you know there is truly something going on. Well, you are the guy always quoting gambling lines on the blog. Maybe you do know something. If you do, then call police.

    But if you DON’T know anything and you are just making ASSUMPTIONS about “it”, then all I get out of your statement is that you are a rumor monger who just wants to burn the team.

    Which is “it”?

  182. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:51 pm

    jeezy33, we all want the truth but where is the evidence? you read the letter?

  183. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:52 pm

    never mind the pipe, bring out the bong!

  184. papajoe2 November 23, 2011 12:52 pm

    Rushing to conclusions again. I watched the Warrior basketball game last night. When they won their first game agains a mediocre team, many fans was declaring Coach Gib a genious, asking him to help other UH teams recruit, coach, etc.. I love basketball and the Warriors, but after 1 game, I still think we should wait and see. The EW team was much smaller but “brought it” to the Rainbow Warriors and did a couple of alley oop slam dunks at the end of the game, at our house too. We didn’t look good at all. We missed too many free throws, and still are turning the ball over. Do I think they will be a good team? Yes, I do. But not just yet. This is where Coach Gib comes in. If they work on their shortcomings and improve, then sky’s the limit. This reminds me of the bloggers who actually thought the football Warriors were going to be unbeaten or 1 or 2 losses. We just have to enjoy the game at the time it is played, and continue to support UH and its student athletes, whatever game it may be.

  185. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 12:54 pm

    Once again, one on-line name per person.

    It makes it easier for book-keeping purposes.

    Thanks.

  186. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:56 pm

    sure would like to see the books.

    one more time,

    GO NA WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  187. Couch potato November 23, 2011 12:58 pm

    wow, all of a sudden, no posts.

  188. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 12:59 pm

    183.

    No, but I know enough that names were revealed.

    When UH gets a chance to release a statement, usually it is always sugar coated. If they released names, it would have been a mad house. I’ll just leave it at that.

    Have i ever posted false info though? Most posters who have followed me through the years know I never lie.

    I don’t know whether the allegations are true or not but I do know UH didn’t release all the info they know. Which is the right move and understandable.

  189. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 12:59 pm

    If a person had some real credible evidence — names, dates, transactions, transcripts, photos — it should have been included in the letter. After all, it was anonymously sent. Why be scared in anonymity? Most likely, this was just a bomb scare with some bitter person having a good yuck-yuck.

  190. Old Diver November 23, 2011 12:59 pm

    Hmm, jeezy33

    Yesterday you said “There is evidence”. Today it’s “I find it kind of sad how most of the fans aren’t concerned at the actual possibility but just want everything to be tossed…” To, “If it is true”, “If anything did happen”. Might be a good idea if you stick to recruiting news.

  191. papajoe2 November 23, 2011 12:59 pm

    Somebody out there using multiple names? Shame, shame, shame on you. 🙂

  192. Bryson November 23, 2011 1:00 pm

    My opinion was based in the fact that HPD decided there was no investigation to be persued…

    Fact:There was an annonymous letter stating wrong doing in the UH Football Program

    Fact:The otter did not name any specific players/coaches ect.

    Fact:HPD found no proof or validity to the claim

    Fact:UH took the proper steps in notifying authorities

    Fact:There are many different versions of what transpired depending on what media outlet

    Fact:This is America Where People are Innocent Until Proven Guilty

    Jeezy I hope this helps you to better understand my though process in deciding if this were something to be worried about.

  193. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:04 pm

    Bryson, sorry in advance, but i had to laugh about the silent otter in your second fact.

  194. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 1:05 pm

    191… Mistake.. Meant to say enough info to make an announcement. Didn’t mean to say evidence as to proving a story true or not.

  195. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:08 pm

    jeezy33, i do understand your position, however would you not think if there were names mentioned in the letter HPD would have questioned the said individuals and UH would have looked at the game films of those players to see if there were any improper play conduct?

    from what i gather, UH did in fact scrutinize the game film and found no evidence of anyone trying to undermine the integrity of the game.

  196. Kevin November 23, 2011 1:09 pm

    Wish I had the day off and some popcorn.

    Seems like entertaining reading.

  197. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 1:10 pm

    Well I know a few people who work at UH and if they all know the names, common sense there were names.

    I guess it is possible I could be wrong. Everyone at UH is being told to not saying a word about it.

    I am not just basing everything on something 1 person is telling me.

  198. kev-1 November 23, 2011 1:16 pm

    Kevin . . . no need day off. I’m working, reading, and writing in the blog all at the same time.

    Would it bother you if I told you I was a bus driver?

  199. kev-1 November 23, 2011 1:18 pm

    Pretty sad that this has hurt recruiting. But, you can’t only blame this. The losses (more importantly who we have lost to) might have a lot to do with it too. This simply is not the same team that these kids committed to in the first place. Crap like this just adds to it though.

  200. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 1:18 pm

    Re #193

    Hahaha, I’m honestly laughing out loud at that DAMN OTTER! This all HIS fault!

  201. kev-1 November 23, 2011 1:19 pm

    stupid otter

  202. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:22 pm

    could there be a cover up by UH like that movie, “The Village”, by M. Night Shyamalan? nah.

  203. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 1:22 pm

    202..

    Yup I am the bad guy.. The reason UH is losing this year is my fault. We are losing recruits because of me.

    Mack should start putting the blame on me too

  204. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 1:24 pm

    Wait, jeezy, are you admitting that you’re the otter?

    Maybe you should re-read #193

  205. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:24 pm

    now if it was a beaver, damn!

  206. kev-1 November 23, 2011 1:25 pm

    jeezy . . . I’m making fun of use of the word “otter” in place of author in post 193. Not you.

  207. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:27 pm

    it’s good to have a good laugh break.

  208. gmahoney November 23, 2011 1:27 pm

    It actually was Col. Mustard, in the library with a candlestick. The otter is innocent, I say!

  209. jeezy33 November 23, 2011 1:28 pm

    Just thought Mojo was trying to blame me again

  210. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 1:29 pm

    By the way Bryson, I do agree with your analysis and logic in #193. That’s not to say that there isn’t truth to the rumors. There may well be. But I need more than that to convince me. There has to be some substantiation.

    You know, if the money line really moved the way it was claimed to move, just find out who the big bettors were. They would have to keep records of any payouts larger than $5k, right?

  211. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:33 pm

    jeezy33, that just shows that everything one reads is not always true or what it seems to be. you have your opinion, i respect that. WarriorMojo has his opinions, i respect that.

    moving forward,

    GO NA WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  212. LizKauai November 23, 2011 1:36 pm

    GO WARRIORS!

    :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

    Where’s Brew808 when we need him?

  213. gmahoney November 23, 2011 1:38 pm

    Hey, Couch, how ’bout the Wahine?! Down 2-0, come back to win 3-2! Now that’s NEWS!

  214. kev-1 November 23, 2011 1:38 pm

    210 . . . I agree with a lot of what you were saying throughout this issue. Rumors are sometimes all BS, but Hawaii is small, and word travels. I just don’t want to deny the fact that this really could all be BS either. I was just as fired up as you when this news broke. But I have thought a lot about how bad this is for the team, the program, for recruiting, etc. It truly is not what this team needs right now. It is hard to condemn a team or players unless there are some concrete facts that come forward.

    I hear all kinds of things about a variety of stuff, but a lot of it is mere conjecture. It really isn’t fair to condemn based on “what I heard” type of evidence.

    One time, I got an opportunity to sit down with a co-worker who I don’t know at all. We talked for a long time, and toward the end of our conversation, he said “man, I heard a lot of bad stuff about you, but you’re alright man.” Turns out, everything he heard was all BS that started because one guy was pissed off at me for something else. Yet this guy formed a judgement about me based on BS.

    I’m just saying, if true this whole deal is completely messed up and should be dealt with accordingly. But as far as we are all concerned, as of now it hasn’t been proven to be true.

  215. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:45 pm

    gmahoney, i watched that game yesterday and thought fresno was playing lights out. they could do no wrong. the Wahine came back strong though, just an awesome match and good to see the team shine in the comeback.

    they haven’t celebrated points like that in a long time. the enthusiasm, energy, and fun all came back!

  216. gmahoney November 23, 2011 1:49 pm

    Shows the character and resolve to win, just like our Warriors who have never ever given up. I support our Wahine and Warriors in all the various sports. They play for US and for that I am grateful.

  217. LizKauai November 23, 2011 1:49 pm

    AMEN, gmahoney!

  218. Derek November 23, 2011 1:52 pm

    Mojo, “it” is the letter, the allegations, the report, the news. This is life. “S” happens all the time. Let’s not get naive. We all hope everything will be hunkydory.

    Let’s not get bent out of share here. Life is too short. Everyday is a good day to me.

    Couch potato: Well said, everybody’s opinion should be respected. It is okay to agree to disagree. Republicans and Democrats do that every single minute of the day, including the Tea Party!! Jim Donovan has a tough job as it is running the athletic department.

  219. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:52 pm

    did you see that set to end game 3 from Kanani? from near the end-line cross court to Croson who buried the kill! outrageous play!

  220. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 1:53 pm

    If somebody has credible evidence, then forward it, and an investigation can be triggered.

    If not — and there seems to be a lot of hearsay — then I think the matter should be considered dead.

    Anonymity doesn’t lead to credibility.

  221. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 1:55 pm

    By the way, it is not acceptable to bash women on this blog.

    The exception is a guy who uses a woman’s name. But then, there are deeper issues there.

  222. Couch potato November 23, 2011 1:59 pm

    ST, in the sense of the letter then the anonymity could be lacking credibility, but not all anonymity is un-credible. some do lead to dead bodies, stolen vehicles, persons of interest, and black friday deals.

Help me guys!

    btw……….where are all the students in the student section of the football games??? how come so empty??

  226. madeinhawaii November 23, 2011 2:04 pm

    Here’s the truth as I see it…

    Innocent until proven guilty. So… without the burden of proof… innocent is the only acceptable “truth” … and I’m happy with that.

  227. WarriorMojo November 23, 2011 2:04 pm

    I’m pretty much done with this issue. The truth usually comes out over time. If there is any substance to this, the people involved will be going to jail for a long time. This is not misdemeanor stuff. These are claims that will have federal charges ranging from racketeering to tax evasion. Again, the Nevada bookies will have records of large payouts. If there is anything to this, people will go to jail.

    In the meantime I am going to continue in my support of the team. I am NOT going to assume that there is truth behind these claims. That’s my decision, a decision I make for myself in a completely open-eyed manner. You can write me off as a kool-aid drinker or whatever else. Doesn’t matter to me. I will never close my eyes to the truth — never, ever — but I also will never assume the worst about people I respect.

    AHEM… 2009 at home vs UW who was ranked #6 I believe and the Wahine were either #9 or #10 at the time. Down two sets to none, the Wahine ROARED back with three straight sets led by Amber Kaufman’s 11 service ACES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    NOW THAT’S A COMEBACK!!!!

    Sat in the 4th row for that BEAST of a match… probably my favorite attended Wahine volleyball game only behind Dave Shoji’s 1000th win, got 3rd row seats for that bad boy too!!!

    Why can’t we all just talk about the importance of conference realignment, the horrible position Hawaii will be in if University XYZ leaves, how bad the MWC is going to be without Boise St., obscure twitter posts, University XYZ moving to Conference XYZ “Next Week, no Next Week, NO NEXT WEEK”, pirates and those who love them.

    Peace to all.

    Ouch!

  244. Freak! November 23, 2011 2:29 pm

    Mr. Kevin kind sir, I’d invite you to our Shindig but you just don’t believe in professional wrestling as much as we do.

    You won’t enjoy watching us take turns jumping off my living room couch and power slamming into my uncle/brother’s old coffee table in our underwear!

  245. al November 23, 2011 2:38 pm

    long hair in football…no problem you like save money on the korean barber. but, if you play football then hair is open game to me. its a violent sport baby.

    otherwise, it is an unfair advantage that you can’t grab the guy’s horsecaller. hahahaha.

  246. gmahoney November 23, 2011 2:38 pm

    Oh, Kevin, I am so sorry you weren’t invited. Maybe next time.

  247. al November 23, 2011 2:38 pm

    kevin would go!

  248. al November 23, 2011 2:39 pm

    stretch…you are a victim of guilt by association.

  249. cocobean November 23, 2011 2:43 pm

    Point shaving. This “one” falls in the category of making a whale out of a manini. Would be a great story if the allegation could be proven.

    Since it was stated the letter didn’t contain names or specific incendents, nohing could be investigated. Reporting the letter and not releasing it is what’s stirring all the speculation.

    Hope this doesn’t open the flood gates where the school is inundated with letters claiming athletes are involved in things from sexual misconduct to drug dealing or terrorist activity.

  250. Ipu Man November 23, 2011 2:43 pm

    Pomai, please…

    how would Tulane score 4 points?

    Maybe I misstyped the score but I’m sure I typed 14…

  251. al November 23, 2011 2:48 pm

    and how about them wahine?

    they looked like crap for two and a half sets.

    then a block here, ace there, kill, dig, block, and you could tell it was over for the fresneck chicks before the third game was done.

    the sleeping giant woke up.

    credit the fresno st girls they did all they could but just couldn’t put the lid on the coffin.

  252. Couch potato November 23, 2011 2:51 pm

    oh, the lid was on the coffin but they couldn’t nail it down. Shoji looked like he was ready with his eulogy.

  253. Couch potato November 23, 2011 2:55 pm

    game time, 4:00 pm, ESPNU.

    GO NA WAHINE!

  254. Kekoa November 23, 2011 2:57 pm

    Stretch, we hardly knew you. Have fun with the gurly men.

    Write wen you get time…Aloha! (Just kidding Stretch).

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Tsaiko clubhouse has been turned into a ‘pupule’ house. I suggest we discuss this at the Tulane t-gate. Time to take back the WB.
  255. Kevin November 23, 2011 2:57 pm
    Al,
    Ms. Thing ova dea for FSU talks too much. DAS Y.
  256. Couch potato November 23, 2011 2:59 pm
    she was pregos right?
  258. Really November 23, 2011 3:00 pm
    165 Tsai, I meant that I hope it fully and 100 percent to be untrue. Point shaving and throwing games are things that cause sickness to the stomach when even mentioned. In fact, quite hard to even get your mind around. That line is never supposed to be crossed and those that do need hard time.
  259. Bryson November 23, 2011 3:06 pm
    #193 darn auto correct on my iphone…lol
  260. Kevin November 23, 2011 3:08 pm
    IWWTHM,
    Yeah HC for Fresno State is pregnant, looks like she is due any day now, but that’s besides the point. She underminds the Wahine more than she should.
    Two years ago, she won ONE set from us at home and after we won the WAC she made a comment about us being over-rated. We went to the Final Four before bowing out to the beast that was Penn State. I called it a three-tier year.
    You had Texas and Penn State being about a mile above the rest.
    Then you had us being a mile above the rest of the rest.
    Essentially:
    Texas and Penn State… then a GIANT GAP… then UH… then another GIANT GAP between all other programs.
    After we embarrassed Michigan to get to the final four, I screamed at how PATHETIC it was. We got seeded 12th and it was CLEAR we were a cut above the REST and realistically only TWO teams in the nation could deal with us.
    That’s pretty awesome if you ask me.
  261. jm2375 November 23, 2011 3:09 pm
    Howzit!
    GO WAHINE!
    I hope Chanteal is feeling better today. Hope big bro Liko doesn’t catch whatever Chanteal has.
    GO WAHINE!!!
  263. jm2375 November 23, 2011 3:14 pm
  264. gmahoney November 23, 2011 3:21 pm
    Bryson, the otters were good for some laughs. Dangerous buggahs, though.
  265. Stephen Tsai November 23, 2011 3:34 pm
    Gotcha.
    Thanks for the clarification.
  267. nulled scripts November 23, 2011 3:42 pm
    I have discovered some important things through your site post. One other point I would like to say is that there are plenty of games out there designed mainly for toddler age young children. They include pattern identification, colors, pets, and forms. These commonly focus on familiarization rather than memorization. This makes little ones engaged without experiencing like they are studying. Thanks
  268. Freak! November 23, 2011 3:43 pm
    Uce 2 my brudder! How could I forget! Please forgive. You’re invited too!
    Two things to remember:
    -you no can bring your dogs. My Mom/Wife/Sister gong make only enough food for us boys.
    -You no can chew gum. Can’t have you getting all confused and hurt yourself while jumping off my couch!
    Other than that, bring your appetite, good stories and clean underwear!
  269. Shoko November 23, 2011 3:46 pm
    Nothing like a little scandal to generate some entertaining post. 😉
  270. jm2375 November 23, 2011 3:52 pm
    Why didn’t the announcers mention the beating the Wahine gave NaMaSu at home? Typical.
  271. (Jesse) James November 23, 2011 4:00 pm
    Hey gang…Been busy and a little under the weather lately too!!! Anyway, in case I forget, HAPPY early THANKSGIVING to all!!!
  272. gmahoney November 23, 2011 4:01 pm
    The announcers seem a little more excited when NMSU scores.
  273. CoolEthan November 23, 2011 4:04 pm
  277. jm2375 November 23, 2011 4:10 pm
    Lemme see, Wahine RPI is #7 and the announcers are saying we need a harder non-conference schedule?
  278. Da Punchbowl Kid November 23, 2011 4:11 pm
    “It actually was Col. Mustard, in the library with a candlestick. The otter is innocent, I say!”
    I KNEW IT!!! 😆
  279. Da Punchbowl Kid November 23, 2011 4:12 pm
    All we need to do is find an otter with the means and the motive to bring this kind of trouble to UH.
  280. Da Punchbowl Kid November 23, 2011 4:14 pm
    Hey Jesse (James)! Its been going around, get better soon. Thank goodness for nyquil and long naps.
  281. PowderPuff November 23, 2011 4:23 pm
    gmahoney!!! Before I forget…a little (okay, not so little) birdie told me you’re a member of Na Koa! 🙂 You know what that means!!! Hahaha! Happy Thanksgiving…expect an e-mail from me soon.
  282. Da Punchbowl Kid November 23, 2011 4:25 pm
    #277 “It just boggles the mind” that should read. Sorry for the typo, that’s the nyquil talkin’.
  283. CoolEthan November 23, 2011 4:42 pm
    “Colonel Mustard , Put down that candlestick, now!”
    Darn candlewax will kill ya,
  284. ken meatoga November 23, 2011 4:42 pm
    At Garret, I dunno what your problem is but you know my name by now! Don’t appreciate you using my son’s name in all this mess! He’s done everything the right way! You know my name by
    now , I appreciate it if you use it! Just to let you know what I saw was an observation , not a complaint as you put it! That being said , I would be more than happy to continue this face to face. You can find after every game at the lockerroom exit.
  288. Stretch November 23, 2011 4:58 pm
  289. Lida Mcfadyen November 23, 2011 5:01 pm
    This is absolutely gold. I was not expecting that I’d get so much out of reading your write up! You’ve just earned yourself a returning visitor
    YEA WAHINE VOLLEYBOWS!!!
    Pffft to HNN for pumping hype on the non-story with non-news.
    BRAVO to Robert Kekaula and KITV for a decent sports report.
    For my Turkey Day friends- and you know who you are… :mrgreen:
    HOW TO COOK A TURKEY:
    First, buy the turkey and a bottle of whiskey. Pour yourself a glass of whiskey and put the turkey in the oven. Take another 2 drinks of whiskey, and set the degree at 375. Have 3 more whiskeys of drink and turn the oven on. Take 4 whisks of drinky and turk the bastey. Stick a turkey in the thermometer, and glass yourself a pour of whiskey. Bake the whiskey for 4 hours, take the oven out of the turkey, and floor the turkey up off the pick. Pour yourself another glass of turkey. Now just tet the sable, and turk the carvey!
    Have a SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
  308. Slugger November 23, 2011 6:16 pm
    Get to feeling better, (J)J. Hope you can enjoy Turkey Day.
    Have an enjoyable Thanksgiving day, gang.
    Back to cooking….
  309. Bulla November 23, 2011 6:29 pm
    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE, (reposted from the other morning)
    the sun is still going to rise today….. how nice. no matter what we think, write or say….the sun is still going to rise today. and on the next 2 saturdays, aloha stadium, whether we are in the stands or not, is going to have a football game…..and despite what our opinions are…. there will be approximately 105+ young men dressed in green and black, playing the game they love, in the state they love, for the people they love. might we reciprocate to these athletes just a little love, just a little
    coaching is coaching, we all have our opinions, but let me ask everyone…..what did the players do to you, to me, to us……to lose our support? starting last spring, during the summer, then fall camp to now, the players have not stopped going to practice, the players have not stopped attending meetings, the players have not stopped training with coach tommy, the players have not stopped going to get rehab treatments from the trainers, the players have not stopped going to classes, the players have not stopped doing their homework, the players have not stopped strapping it up every Saturday…….
    so I ask again, what have the players done to us……..I know what they have done, they have received all the support and lack of support from a state filled with fair weather fans at best,they have received all of the posts that have been written here and other web sites, they have received all of the cheers and the jeers from ‘their’ fans, they have received all of the blocks, hits, and injuries on the field, they have received all of the confusions surrounding the football program at UH currently.
    i wonder, is it just too hard to just support ‘our boys’ these last two games, is it just too hard to be encouraging instead of discouraging, is it just too hard to be grateful for their collective efforts, is it just too hard to find something good to say about our players, is it just too hard to lay down the endless tirades and write about the good that our players have done and the good that they have in them?
    they should feel no shame for wearing the green and black, they should feel no shame for representing the 808, they should feel no shame for sacrificing their bodies for the game they love, they should feel no shame……period.
    we can write all we want, talk all we want, discuss all we want, argue all we want, and insult all we want about anything for we have proven we can do that on the WB. Might I suggest that we turn to the positive, for the players’ sake, and be more supportive of THEM, not the coaches or administration, but for THE PLAYERS.
    i put this out today not to offend anyone, but to just ask if anyone remembers how this blog started, the flavor, the gist, the overall aroma of what we shared way back when…..have we progressed to a better place, or have we regressed to a place we never thought we’d be? just a thought, but I am going to try and be supportive of the Warriors of 2011, be positive for the Warriors of 2011 and be appreciative of the Warriors of 2011.
    Blessings to one and all, and in this week of Giving Thanks, oooops, I mean Thanksgiving, I am grateful for all of the WB ohana, my ohana, the air I breathe, but I am also grateful for the young men that wear the green and black and proudly say that they are WARRIORS. Mahalo boys, for giving an old guy something to cheer about and something to be proud of.
    IMUA LANAKILA
    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS
    GO TSAIKOS
    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone…..wherever you are….we ALL have something to be thankful for…….Happy Giving Thanks …… you’re probably not where you want to be in your life, but thank God you’re not where you were….. we are all a work in progress, just like the WB, it is still a work in progress.
    Mahalo for putting up with all of my foibles, idiosyncracies, and challenges….may you be blessed and not stressed, may you have a smile upon your face and joy in your heart. If you have food on the table, a roof over your head, and running water… you’re better off than 80% of the world’s population…..imagine that.
    we miss you guys, we love you guys, and just want you to all have an enjoyable Thanksgiving……bless each and everyone of you and your ohana…..
  318. Old School Dave November 23, 2011 7:01 pm
    Heard from an uncle in Utah (local transplant) that the sports talk radio show up there with Alema Harrington, mentioned the UH point shaving allegations and HPD investigation, but stopped short and failed to say anything about there not being enough evidence to proceed.
    Also told that BYU fans are up in arms with their weak football schedule in the second half of the season as an independent. They’ll come to Aloha Stadium with their noses up in the air.
    More rumors about Utah HC Kyle Whittingham being approached by ASU – I guess Dennis Erickson is out after this season. If Whittingham does take the ASU job (they’ll probable offer him a lot of $$$), could this mean that Norm Chow finally lands that elusive head coaching job?
    Happy Thanksgiving all. Don’t eat TOO much 🙂
  319. Old School Dave November 23, 2011 7:05 pm
    BTW, all you guys deep frying your turkeys tomorrow – be careful. Don’t want to see more mishaps posted on youtube.
  320. Derek November 23, 2011 7:14 pm
    Couple of things:
    1) If you watched the volleyball game on ESPNU today, I could sense that the 2 announcers were very negative in their commentating, both about UH players and even NMSU players. “They should have done this, they should have done that”, “passing is bad” “UH will have a hard time against top ranked teams” “schedule is weak” “block is too small” “Hewitt not using her wrist to hit down on the kill”, etc. etc. etc. It was pretty disgusting. Even my wife was saying that the announcers did not say very much positive things. I felt sorry for the players on both teams and they deserve more respect than the announcers gave. If Shoji or Donavan watch the replay of the match they should complain to the WAC office and also to ESPN in concert w/ comments also from Coach Jordan of New Mexico St. That’s what I would do.
    2) The Wahine played well overall. Jane Croson stood out tonight and I thought she was the MVP tonight. Kanani was steady and all around the best. I was impressed, as usual, with Croson’s serving and also Uiato is deadly on her serve too. Emily Maeda played very well in the back. Adolpho came on at the end with several blocks too. Alex Griffiths was serving tough. She’s also very funny. Passing could be better and they will work on that.
    3) Good NFL games tomorrow. To bad most people will not be able to see the 49ers and Ravens because it’s on the NFL network, unless you have Direct TV. If anything the Harbaugh Bowl is the most intriguing. There’s also the Texas-Texas A&M game at 3 pm. on ESPN, a Thanksgiving tradition. The teams are pretty even to me and the talent level is about the same. Turnovers probably the difference. I like Aaron Rodgers, I like Matt McBriar, and I like Jim Harbaugh so I have to go with the Packers, Cowboys, and Niners.
    4) Injuries can have severe consequences on a football team. Losing Moniz was huge. Also, the Bears losing Cutler and Texans losing Matt Schaub is huge. We’ll have to see all 3 teams how they handle the rest of the year. Also, Michael Vick getting banged up didn’t help. The biggest injury of course is Peyton Manning. When you lose the main guy it’s pretty devastating. The key? A very good back up.
  321. A-House November 23, 2011 7:18 pm
    To the recruit who decommitted and committed to Colorado and the recruit who canceled his trip, good luck to you where ever you play!!!
    There will be others who will be most happy to take your place and bring honor to himself, his family, his teammates, to the Warrior program and to the State of Hawaii.
  322. A-House November 23, 2011 7:19 pm
    But, if you change your mind and decide UH is the best place, welcome!
  323. Bowwar November 23, 2011 7:31 pm
    #110: Old school…If my memory serves me correct, it was MACK, not McKnight who defended his squad from some drunken idiots in the South end-zone. Mack was DC In 1999 before going off to TTech. 1999 was our “turnaround” year and we didn’t have a great year till MACK came back as DC in 2007.
  324. Bleed Green and White November 23, 2011 7:37 pm
    I just have to speak my peace.
    Regarding the allegations of point shaving against the UH football program. Could it have happened? Obviously, yes. Did it happen? We will never know. I don’t care what anybody thinks or believes in, truth of the matter is we will never know.
    However, consider this. Most finger-pointers have targeted Bryant Moniz as a guilty party. Why? I have no idea to be honest.
    2010, 5,040 yards and 39 touchdowns. Enough said about that I’m sure. 2011 at the time of his season ending injury, 22 TD’s to only 5 INT’s. Hello? Anybody?
    Offensive line all brand new new this season. Salas, Pilares and Green moved on to the NFL and the new crop of receivers, well, Pollard excluded most of the season, decent, but not good play-makers. Moniz ran for his life most every game, most every snap for that matter. In my eyes, the kid left all he had on the field on Saturdays, and I, for one, appreciate fully his efforts.
    Could this team be better? Sure, no doubt. Have they struggled? Yes.
    Is there monkey business going on? I highly doubt it. But I too do not really know for sure.
    I do know this though, Warriors like Paredes, Tuipulotu, Meatoga, Brown, Pollard, Moniz, Clapp, Torres, Sapolu, Hardy-Tuliau, well, they could for my team if I had one any time. These kids, along with their teammates, they put it all on the line each play, and, well, for me, that’s all I can ask.
    These kids represent my state, my school and my team. They are Warriors and I am proud to bleed green and white.
  325. Bowwar November 23, 2011 7:38 pm
    I’m tired of the negativity expressed by some vile folks on this blog. There is no investigation or evidence of wrong doing, so put it to rest. The damage is already been done & we have knives in our back. Despite that true Warriors will fight on & back the team. If some of these vile characters want to continue to “twist” the knives rather than move on, I’m sure you can expect reciprocal action.
  326. Bowwar November 23, 2011 7:45 pm
    Sorry, there is NO threat meant in my last post, but you can’t continue to kick people or our team without people fighting back. We’ve had a tough season & things haven’t panned out as well as desired. Even Michael Green was sympathetic on the BC show as he once defended a player & program wrongly accused of point shaving. The damage is done…Nuff already! Our team needs your support, not your negativity.
    If the Warriors have their backs against the wall, I’m with them as well. Bring it on!
    IMUA Warriors!
  327. al November 23, 2011 7:56 pm
    yes…i, too hope that come saturday this team will need no further motivation to play with heart and aplomb like it has never done so this year.
    i’ll be there…will you?
  328. gmahoney November 23, 2011 8:04 pm
    Al – yep, Section V, row 36, seats 1-3. Who’s with me? Go warriors!
  329. Old Diver November 23, 2011 8:10 pm
    #319
    It’s not a matter of not enough evidence, it’s a matter of there is no evidence. HPD did not consider the letter evidence. If they did they would have conducted an investigation.
  330. wafan November 23, 2011 8:16 pm
    My seniors finally got it!
    They come “armed” with verifiable facts when we discuss issues. Hearsay and speculation is always called by their peers. Yes, we take time during class to research the facts.
    Makes for intelligent and lively conversations; as well as well-informed, non-apathetic and responsible citizens.
  342. papajoe2 November 23, 2011 8:42 pm
    Stupid idea. Write anonymous letters about point shaving to ALL football universities to even out the field.
  343. Bowwar November 23, 2011 8:44 pm
    On another note, I want to wish my fellow Tsaikos a Very Happy Thanksgiving!
  344. LizKauai (macbook) November 23, 2011 8:56 pm
    Just saw Ken Meatoga’s comment.
    There are many Warrior family members who come here looking for news about their kids- how practice went… maybe a picture or two or twenty.
    ST is known for his journalistic skill, his heart and fairness. That’s why they come here and that is why most of us became Tsai-kos.
    When we honor that example, the playhouse is a place of joy.
    It attracts people by the dozens.
    It’s good for everyone…
    FFFFF- Forever!
    GO WARRIORS!
  345. alwaysarainbow November 23, 2011 9:00 pm
    This is really terrible that an anonymous letter can start such a rain of negativity on the program. We have come so so far since the 70s. Remember the Casey Ortiz fiasco. Read the Hawaii Journal of History article on Chief Justice William Richardson’s take on the matter. With UH’s up and down schedule, there were accusations of point shaving on games with lesser opponents in the independent schedule. There was a scandal, yet the UH administration, coaches and players took the matter into their hands and fixed things. We all vowed this would never happen again. Now with the internet, social media and blogs, the fire is lit. I really hope this is put to rest quickly. A lot of football fans around the country already have a less than respectful opinion of our program. We have to be squeaky clean, and positive. Let’s get back on it.
    Bulla, well said, brother. I Give Thanks for all my friends on this blog. And for the hard-working writer, ST.
    Big_Daddy_Knows is right. Someone should do a story about ST.
    I’ll be in the mauka yellow section on Saturday cheering the team on.
    Wish I had time to go to practice tomorrow morning, but I’m cooking…
    GO NINERS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO LINFIELD!!!
  350. anklebiters November 23, 2011 9:20 pm
    Old School Dave:
    Where did you hear the rumors about ASU contacting Whittingham? Nothing on the wire here so far. Rich Rodriguez is taking over at Arizona so he’s checked off the list of available HCs. Erickson is on the hot seat…he is in his fifth season with a 31-28 record…losing to Arizona, any year, does not sit well with the program either. There is still a slim chance of ASU winning the South division and possibly saving Erickson. His salary, I believe, is around $1.275M.
  351. Old School Dave November 23, 2011 9:30 pm
    Anklebiters: Told to me by a relative who lives in Utah (Utah fan, hates BYU). Not sure if it’s just internet chatter or on the local news there. Whittingham seems to be quite comfortable at Utah and has done a fine coaching job after a rough start in the Pac-12, but you never know when schools with deeper pockets come calling. Funny how Dennis Erickson was a Coach of the Year candidate in the first half of the season.
  352. Old School Dave November 23, 2011 9:35 pm
    Anklebiters:
    Apparently, Whittingham makes almost as much ($1.2 mil) as Dennis Erickson at ASU. Whittingham being a member of the Mormon church may also keep him at Utah.
  353. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 23, 2011 9:57 pm
    I figured now with Utah in the PAC12, they have become a school with deep pockets.
    Then again, I don’t think they get full share for another year or so.
    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
    Some of us have been saying for a long time that we needed more positive stuff in support of our Warriors, and then I was asked if I want reporting restricted like communist North Korea. Hahaha! Glad to see people finally coming around and realizing there is more to it here than people’s gripes about our coaches. I like it better when we all (well, most of us, anyway) get along; acknowledge our differences and disagreements, but get along nonetheless. Still gotta support our student-athletes!
    Hope you all have a great day! Eat and be merry!
    Go, Warriors!!!
  375. Garret November 24, 2011 5:32 am
    ken meatoga,
    I apologize for any offense that I caused you or your family. I don’t know how often you read this blog, but I have NEVER criticized your son’s play for the Warriors and I have praised his leadership and the example that he has set for the team.
    Thank you for clarifying that what you posted was an observation, not a complaint. In that case, I should have used examples of posts from other people who posted complaints about Moniz’s demeanor. Trouble is, many of the complaint posts also include accusations that I don’t want to post on this blog.
    What I was trying to do early in this blog was to post 2 things to argue against the point shaving accusation. I was trying to *defend* the Warrior players, not throw anyone under the bus:
    1. I pointed out that the Vegas line could have moved because gamblers got inside information on injuries/illnesses with the team. With UH staying in Vegas for the week and with practices being held at a Vegas high school, lots of people unrelated to the team could have observed things and passed along information. So, having the line move is NOT proof that anyone related to UH did anything wrong.
    2. A number of people (mostly on other forums like WSN, though there are people here doing the same) have been pointing their finger at Moniz for the allegations, which I think is unfair unless they have evidence to back them up. There have been numerous complaints about Moniz looking too happy on the sidelines and after games after losses, with some people outright accusing Moniz of things. Your observation shows that some people aren’t happy with his upbeat demeanor. Other posts go well beyond your observation.
    My point (which I obviously messed up trying to make!) was that Moniz seemed to have this upbeat attitude last season also and it seems to just be a part of his personality. Not letting things bother him may be how he can perform on the field and not let the pressure get to him. Some people don’t outwardly show their sadness, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t care.
    I would discuss this with you in person, but I do not live in Hawaii. I will make it a point to clear things up with you face-to-face if you wish to discuss this further. I can PM you via WSN before I go to Hawaii the next time.
  376. Shoko November 24, 2011 5:55 am
    Happy Thanksgiving, folks!
  377. wowlaulau November 24, 2011 6:04 am
    #376, Garret I had the same impression that it was a complaint. Glad to hear that this is not the case….
