Shutter might face suspension following arrest

Cayman Shutter, regarded as UH’s No. 2 quarterback, faces a possible  suspension following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving early this morning.

Shutter was released after posting $500 bail.

UH’s code of conduct for student-athletes calls for disciplinary action following an arrest.

UH released this statement from Norm Chow:

“We are aware of the incident involving one of our student-athletes. We are in the process of gathering all the facts. We have a code of conduct which our student-athletes are to adhere to and we expect them to represent both the university and football program to its highest integrity. We will make a follow-up statement at a later date after we gather all of the information.”

* * * * *

It’s spring break this week, and UH is essentially closed.

Sort of.

Those deemed to be “essential” are required to report to work. Topping the list are parking-booth attendants, custodians, the Stan Sheriff Center crew (led by Rich Sheriff) and the weight-room staff.

What’s interesting is the Warriors have been told they have the week off. But that hasn’t stopped many Warriors from participating in their own “unsupervised” workouts. There are inspirational signs posted throughout the lower campus. One of them is about working hard when nobody is watching. It appears many are taking that message to heart.

I’m glad Stan Van Gundy stood up and said it would be “absurd” to think Kentucky could beat the Wizards.

    He’s right.

Every time a pro or college team struggles, you always hear somebody say how a lower-level team could win. No college team is going to beat an NBA team, and no high school team is going to beat an FBS football team. Take UH, for instance. If Desmond Dean, as he is now, were to Jump Street his way back to high school, he would be the No. 1 prospect in the state. That’s what two years of college workouts, training and coaching will do.

  13. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 8:56 am

And that’s why I think Joston Thomas is a huge loss. His game experience alone cannot be easily replaced.

    ST,

I agree with you that it would be absurd for UK to win if it were with NBA rules (mostly the 48 minutes). But I think if they were playing with college rules which is much more like international rules, UK would have a shot at an upset. Don’t get me wrong, it’ll still be highly unlikely for them to win but it wouldn’t be completely absurd… When the Dream Team was preparing for the Olympics, they had an exhibition game with international rules against a group of (at the time) college all-stars including Penny Hardaway and Grant Hill. The Dream Team lost that game by 8 points. Granted, MJ and Co. came back the next night and beat the College All-Stars by 40 but still I think the college rules could give way to an upset… You can also look at when Team USA lost to Puerto Rico by 19 a few years ago.

  17. madeinhawaii March 29, 2012 9:45 am

UK could win… just gotta make sure got WAC referees…

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Wizards struggling? That’s normal for them, at least they’re not the worst team in the NBA. Haven’t won since they were known as the Bullets.

Hope everyone comes down to the SSC this weekend to see the volleyball Warriors in their final home matches. Saturday is Senior Night as we say Aloha to Steven Hunt, Nick Castello, Troy Crutchfield and Jarod Lofy.

I bet the boys are working on their cardio and isometrics training….if i was a player with a week off, i would be doing that too….especially after tasting spring training for the first time under a new regime…..like a date…dress to impress….get a leg up on cardio when you can and show the coaches warriors dont believe in taking breaks. Mahalo and good day to everyone.

What a disaster for Cayman. I was really wanted him to win the job but i feel a suspension will take place leaving him with almost no chance or even a chance on the team. Will be interested how coach chow responds to this. Would not be surprised if he came down very hard on Cayman. Very, very dissappointed-hope he can learn from this and move on

  23. d1shima March 29, 2012 10:40 am

  24. JHasegawa March 29, 2012 10:48 am

About the dream team losing. You’re also talking about an all-star college team of which all of them probably ended up going to the NBA. Kentucky has 4 – 6 players that will go to the NBA and the rest won’t. An NBA team has ALL NBA players.

  25. jkjones March 29, 2012 10:50 am

IDK about Cayman winning the job at QB, but, he has a future in football in some form.

Very bright otherwise–in class and on the field. I share graham’s sentiments above.

  31. cocobean March 29, 2012 11:33 am

Hope no one compares this with the Graunke mess.

We’ll see how Sutter fares under the Chow Justice System.

  32. HawaiiMongoose March 29, 2012 11:38 am

We all make mistakes, but for Cayman to put himself in this position just when the top of the depth chart was finally in sight… the timing couldn’t be much worse. Assuming the charge sticks, he will now have to take accountability, face the consequences and hopefully rise up to overcome the adversity. Hope he can handle it.

  33. 808Bowler March 29, 2012 11:43 am

Smh suspension for sure but think he be ok. Might miss some games tho.

  34. mctruck March 29, 2012 11:44 am

Coaches; pro-players; politicians/public officials..even judges, get arrested for dui. The bottom line is everyone has to suffer the consequence(s) of making poor decisions. What the sports world calls, “man-up.”

Seeing how coach Chow has dealt with tardiness’ in spring training, etc., I don’t think he’s going to treat this offense with “kid-gloves.” imop.

  35. slenzi March 29, 2012 11:47 am

Hmmm, the name Shutter rings a bell. Oh yeah, its that big law firm down on Bishop Street. Do you suppose they may know how to beat a D.U.I. charge? I’m just sayin . . . guilty, no guilty, Cayman can probably get off. Now if he had gone to St. Louis, no ticket brah.

  37. Wes'side Warrior March 29, 2012 11:47 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Just hope the rest of our student-athletes keep the law in mind when acting like college kids. They choose the path they’re on, and that means the sacrifices as well as the exposure. No news is good news when it comes to the police blotter report.

Always good to hear of them working out on their own and catching up/taking care of school work.

  39. Garret March 29, 2012 12:04 pm

Bad news about Shutter, especially during the Spring when everyone is trying to learn Coach Chow’s new system and the depth chart hasn’t been made yet. Falling behind now could handicap his chances to play for the rest of his Warrior career, or make him less effective when he does get a chance to play.

UH does have a number of other QBs that are hungry for playing time and they will grow in the system with the extra reps they will get now.

  40. Garret March 29, 2012 12:06 pm

Nice article about Coach Chow’s journey through his career that has led him back to Hawaii to coach at UH.

  41. kev-1 March 29, 2012 12:07 pm

Many of us have been guilty of DUI, whether caught or not. Young men make mistakes. With that said, you have to realize that as a student athlete on scholarship, you have a responsibility to your school and your team to not make those kinds of mistakes. Tough break for Shutter. I believe that he has the kind of character to bounce back from this in a positive way.

  42. Warrior Dave March 29, 2012 12:08 pm

Joston Thomas must be so happy that everyone will now talk about Cayman. This young man made a stupid mistake. Some people come across on the radio like he murdered kids or something. There will be a heavy price to pay when Coach gets back. Let this be a learning experience for Cayman.

  43. Garret March 29, 2012 12:08 pm

UH had been trying to get this kicker to walk on for this season and then get a scholarship next year, but he chose Nevada. It looks like Nevada didn’t use up the scholarships in this past recruiting class, so they could offer him a scholarship next Spring if he wins the starting job instead of having to wait a whole year.

Though he’d drawn interest from several schools —- including Hawaii, Fresno State, Arizona and New Mexico —- most wanted Rausa to walk on with an eye on earning a scholarship the following school year. At Nevada, he said he’ll have an opportunity to earn a full scholarship by his second semester if he wins the job as a true freshman.

  46. Garret March 29, 2012 12:10 pm

This writer makes a case for why Idaho should drop down to D-IAA.

In the 2009-10 school year, 51 percent of the revenue “generated” by the athletic department came from student fees, state coffers and the U of I itself.

Ticket sales, body-bag game guarantees, television money and conference revenue sharing from bowl games and NCAA tournament appearances? Just 21 percent.

    Let’s go over this:

“There are inspirational signs posted throughout the lower campus. One of them is about working hard when nobody is watching. It appears many are taking that message to heart.”

If someone is working out when nobody is watching, then how do we know anyone is working out, and since we did not witness anything, how could we come away feeling inspired?

    Did Reardon write this stuff?

  53. Garret March 29, 2012 12:41 pm

    Curt,

It depends who the Big East adds. If Air Force turns down the Big East, there is speculation that they could invite Fresno State–and Fresno State would then put their Olympic sports in the Big West, which would be great for UH.

If Air Force joins the Big East like I expect, I don’t think that they would put their other teams in the Big West.

If UNLV had a good football team, they have the market that would get them into the Big East and UNLV would be awesome for the Big West in the Olympic sports. Unfortunately, their football team is way below what is needed.

So, I don’t think that the Big West will benefit directly from the Big East. However, if SJSU doesn’t get into the MWC or MWC/CUSA alliance, I can see SJSU eventually dropping football down to D-IAA and putting their Olympic sports into the Big West. The Big West’s commissioner said outright that he’s hoping for SJSU to drop football out of D-IA and join the Big West for Olympic sports. SJSU would be the Northern California anchor that the Big West needs in my opinion, since so much of the Big West is in Southern California.

  67. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 1:39 pm

    D1

It would fall under breaking team rules, which is under the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

I just like how ESPN can create their own stats.

With college softball approaching the post season and ESPN coverage to increase, I wonder if we’ll see “TRUE ERA”…

  81. WarriorNY March 29, 2012 2:39 pm

    @73,

I wish ESPN created more stats… They should create a stat for points per shot attempted.

For example, JJ Redick shoots 3’s for the Orlando Magic at 43%, so for every ten three point shots he takes he’ll make 4.3… 4.3 times 3 points = 12.9 points per ten shots taken… (at threes, I don’t have time to figure out that mixed with his 2’s) Counter that with Dwight Howard who shoots at 60% at two point attempts means Dwight makes 12 points per 10 shots taken.

This would actually mean that Orlando’s 3 point based offense runs more efficiently when JJ Redick and Ryan Anderson take three point attempts than when Dwight Howard takes a two…

(Sorry that new ESPN stat got me on a tangent.)

  82. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 2:41 pm

Long Beach State’s Jim Baughman is the brother of the former UH pitcher.

  83. WarriorNY March 29, 2012 2:41 pm

continuation of my ramblings… This would also mean that Stan Van Gundy is very intelligent to keep with his 3 point based offense despite what the “experts” suggest…

  84. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 2:42 pm

Jeff Van Gundy said no stat should count after a team builds a 30-point lead.

  85. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 2:43 pm

    WarriorNY:

    I like your stat theory.

  86. Stephen Tsai March 29, 2012 2:45 pm

    WarriorNY:

Even further, when Dwight Howard is fouled, he only converts a little less than 60 percent of his free throws, so for every five shooting fouls, he’ll expect a return of 60 on the dollar, or what we used to call Canadian money.

  87. WarriorNY March 29, 2012 2:45 pm

  90. Ipu Man March 29, 2012 2:47 pm

Derek can get a little excitable, but I’ve had a few e-mail exchanges with him, and he’s an OK guy.

The na-na-na was uncalled for, though. I edited that out. Stay classy, San Diego.

Derek is not Derek Inouchi, either.

Derek uses that name because he’s a fan of Derek Jeter.

Derek Inouchi is a regular reader, but he won’t post, no matter what BigHilo says about him. Instead, he will grumble to me. I get to be Dr. Phil every once in a while.

  118. kev-1 March 29, 2012 3:45 pm

I agree that Shutter will overcome this adversity, learn from it, and be okay. But I don’t see how this could all be a mistake. We’re not talking about a guy trying to explain how he got lipstick on his neck when he came home from “working late.” No proof. We’re talking about a DUI. You either did, or you didn’t. There is a cops word, enough suspicion, and probably a failed sobriety test to prove it.

I guess that’s what happens when a Punahou alum gets pulled over by a Saint Louis alum. Not to worry. Get plenty lawyers and judges that are Punahou alums.

And yes, main thing nobody got hurt.

I agree with you, sheesh, c’mon guys, since when your kukai no stink? Life is so easy when you’re perfect I guess, so any infraction or law breaking incident needs to bear the wrath of all humanity.

Remember, these are young adults, and more emphasis on the young than the adult. There will be a price to pay, but let’s not make a new sport of dragging the accused and his ohana through the mud……please. And to all the perfect people out there who have never done anything wrong in their life…..last time I checked, the only perfect person to walk this earth was placed on a cross and crucified……so let’s leave it at that.

For those who want to jump all over me for my comments, bring it, if that’s what it takes to leave the other situation where it belongs…..with Coach Chow and the legal system.

    GO WARRIORS

    GO WILDCATS

  151. papajoe2 March 29, 2012 7:19 pm

I hope nobody takes the coments that I made the wrong way. I am not against drinking, but, I don’t condone drinking and driving. If you drink, you must drink responsibily. 2 very, very dear people to me got into seperate, single car accidents while DUI. Thank Akua they only had minor injuries and didn’t injure anybody. Also, 3 kids (underaged) that I had either coached or been a small part of their lives, got into a horrific accident on the winding road to Wailua. 2 of them died. That’s the main reason that I no longer drink more that 2 beers if I drink at all and is saddened when I hear about accidents involving DUI. What are the young people to do for entertainment? Seems like they would go to some place to socialize, be it a bar/nightclub, the beach, or a friend’s house or even cruising and alcohol is present. I also don’t watch Green Bottle Hot Hawaii Night and the other Mexican beer show with local musicians on TV. They obviously gloirfy drinking their product. Those shows mostly cater to the younger generation, which, unfortunately, makes everyone look “cool” while dancing to the music with a beer in their hand. Mahalo Ke Akua for Cayman not getting hurt or hurting anyone else, IF, what happened is true. Live and learn. We were all young once and made mistakes too, but, fortunately, we are here, like him, to warn other people of potential trageties. I am confident that everything will turn out alright and his better Warriors days are STILL ahead of him.

Regarding Montana’s firing of the HC & AD

The school didn’t specify the reason behind the firings, but the decision comes on the heels of several sexual assault cases, both on and off-campus, that have occurred over the past couple of years. Two of those cases are said to have involved members of the school’s football team.

The Associated Press identifies starting quarterback Jordan Johnson and running back Beau Donaldson as two players connected to sexual assault cases.

So take that as you will; normally, coaches and AD’s aren’t fired for the actions of players.

Bulla wrote . . . “let’s not make a new sport of dragging the accused and his ohana through the mud”

Did I miss something? From what I’ve read & posted here today regarding QB2 people have pretty much been of the “he made a mistake, he’ll rebound” vibe. Then all of a sudden a few people came out and made some “stop condemning the kid . . . must be hard being perfect” type of comments.

I especially haven’t read anyone dragging him or is ohana throught the mud. I have seen more comments boasting that he will rebound because he has good character.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with expecting a student athlete who is getting his education paid for via scholarship to be a bit more cognizent of his decisions and responsibilities. Is he a kid who made a mistake? Of course. Does it make him a bad person? Of course not. He’ll learn, he is a bright kid.

  166. kev-1 March 29, 2012 9:34 pm

DUI’s are not a generational thing.

  167. papajoe2 March 29, 2012 9:51 pm

Kevin, don’t read to much into age about what I posted. Just that some bad habits can start at a younger age, then its hard to break when it becomes addictive. Yup, age doesn’t matter when driving under the influence although I did notice that the guy that ran into the family had a DUI in 1986 (per KHON). When does it start? Those kids that died on their way to Wailua were underclassmen in high school and had no business drinking, but according to some of their friends, that’s what a lot of them do. The drunk driver of the vehicle was also the same age but survived. I do hope that the younger generation don’t fall into a trap that they cannot get out of. Speaking of the younger people drinking it was pertaining only to those kids that I knew and their parents too. They had most of their lives to live yet. I trust that those people in the show’s audience are all over 21, and I do see older people in the audience too, but imho, the young people watching at home, are easier to influence. They may even be kids in elementary or middle school that just like good music. DRINKING AND DRIVING DOES NOT PERTAIN TO AGE.
