Grumble, grumble, grumble.
That’s all I hear about the UH basketball team.
So I go to my first game of the year — $26 a ticket, by the way — and not only do the Rainbows win, they play well.
That old UCLA high-post offense opens up cuts to the basket. The compact 2-3 zone allows some soft spots in the corners, but clogs the low post. And the players play with great effort.
Do they run? Well, no. But neither did Nevada. But why push it when Nevada drops three back quickly and UH essentially only has one true guard who has to play the entire game?
Maybe last night’s game was not the norm. But it was the only up-close evidence I have.
* * * * *
Negotiations continue between wideout Malcolm Lane, who is currently suspended for breaking team rules, and the UH coaches. At issue is what Lane needs to do to be allowed to rejoin the team. As things currently stand, there are no plans to allow Lane to participate in spring practice or training camp.

This is what the water shelf looked like at Foodland yesterday morning:
First!!
Nytal!
Jeannie Lee texted me to ask why I was at the basketball game. She was at home. I asked how she knew I was at the game.
She texted: “Well, dude, hel-LO. U r behind the action. They didn’t really show you, just the action down there and I saw ur big head. ha.ha.”
and I saw you too, wondering what you were doing with the maniacs and students section
i thought Nash blew it when the offense went into a slow motion offense with 8 minutes to go, Nevada crept closer and closer, can’t stop doing what got them the lead.
yeah mbb played well last night.
lot of rumors circulating about that former running rebel now nba asst coach.
I wasn’t opposed to UH working the clock. It wasn’t going to be able to run with Nevada. But I was surprised that for about a two-minute stretch, there wasn’t much motion in the motion offense. No screens. No cuts .
i believe any team needs to keep the pedal to the metal all the time. any level, any sport.
there’s a defined difference between playing to win vs playing not to lose.
Malcolm Lane better do whatever is required to get back on to the team,
for his own good.
don’t throw away your last year of football, Malcolm.
that stand around offense has been the root of much of the evil this year.
Too bad every game can’t be senior night, and have a tsunami warning earlier in the day to throw off the visiting team.
although i am not privy to the malcom lane situation i would hope that the coach will take a long and hard look at giving the young man a second chance here.
not only because he could be a great contributor for 2010, but, allowing him to atone for his debts will make lane a better person in the long run. isn’t that something that should be important when one is able to affect so much in a young man’s life?
isn’t being a coach not only about developing a good player, but, should also be about molding fine young men?
From my one-game observation, I don’t think it’s a scheme thing as much as a personnel thing. There just aren’t enough players who beat an opponent off a dribble. Again, that goes back to having only one true guard.
I’m always in favor of giving people second chances, especially seniors.
congrats to the bball team and cnash. too little to late but hoping all terns out well for every-body.
still, and all kudos to hiram thompson for his gutty performance all season long.
we lack exactly that, guards who can compete. okay, we lack talent, depth, and we have difficulties because of that. however, standing around with a you know what up you know where is not going to cut it.
even without talent, at least we should turn up our defense, play tough and aggressive, and above all else play smart. cut the turnovers, the mental errors, missed assignments, etc, etc.
heard some stories surrounding lane’s departure this past year. but, haven’t heard the true story of what the current hang up is.
with all the troubles that graunke had and was still given a second, third, fourth chance, i would hope that lane will be allowed back in.
Al new HC, different rules. Remember posters complaining that Jones wasn’t a disciplinarian, which I don’t think is true then and now, and allowed “his favorites” too much lee way. I think the lack of PT of certain players contributed to the criticism Jones and Glanville received from posters.
Kinda late. Just got back in… the islands are secure.
The farms are secure and for some the restaurants are secure…
and Hawaii is OK too. 🙂
Good night everyone!
Regarding Malcom Lane, the Warriors could really use him. When I look back at highlights from 2007, he had a few big plays that show how big of a player he could be. The highlights from 08 aren’t as easy to come by, but he had a bunch of key play that year too. I don’t know why he redshirted last year, but it’d be a real shame if he doesn’t play next year.
ST- So, was tonite a family male bonding nite?
BTW: You gotta show more excitement! (your section supplied you with props!) At least ack like you’re into da game. Looked like you just there to observe. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
Talph, Kekoa, you guys are funny!
Al, al, al,
brilliant posts above.
You right about the idea, pedal to the metal, all the time, any sport….
ande about Malcolm Lane,
Al, you maee an exellent excellent point above.
eating crow is in everybody’s interest. Lane, coaches, the team, Warrior Nation.
Bhf2 ~ I’m innocent!…I plead da 5th!
Ralph was acting on his own accord. He prolly had a little malice aforethought, but he usually plays well with others.
Hilo lives!
Howzit Kekoa.
we’re sitting at Mohouli park, which is above 500 feet elev., about 1/4 mile above St. Joe. and we got a clear look at Hilo bay breakwater directly in front, and coconut island on the right.
the receding waters at the end of the breakwater point was awesome, watching all the brown water about 100′ yards wide ripping past the end of the wall, could see the outline of the reef out there, 100 yards jutting towards the left of the breakwater to our left, thought for sure Hilo was gonna get wacked again, maybe reach my office, which is about 10 feet above sea level. and i prayed….. dear lord, how come you make like dis to me, and not ralph… 😀 nah nah nah
whitey
your sistaz neighbors going Las Vegas today, therapy.
😀
I don’t think anybody posted this article about how BYU might have come close to joining the Pac-10 when BYU was still in the WAC.
Article also mentions BYU and the Big 12. The part of the Governor of Texas insisting the Baylor be part of the Big 12 has been confirmed by a lot of people, even some who spoke on the record. The BYU part has not been confirmed to my knowledge but I did hear that before.
From Florida Newspaper….Urban Meyer on Vacation in Hawaii
If you haven’t heard by now, an earthquake in Chile created tsunami warnings in several areas of that part of the world. Including, you guessed it, Hawaii.
According to the Gainesville Sun, Meyer and his wife Shelley were evacuated from their hotel to higher ground early this morning due to the warnings.
Mrs. Meyer labeled it as a “strange ending to a great trip!”
Mr. Meyer labeled it as “you’ve got to be freaking kidding me!”
During Friday night’s baseball game, Don Robbs alluded to what the 2011 Rainbow baseball schedule may have in store. He noted that the Oregon Ducks are likely coming back to Honolulu next year and that it would be a while before the ‘Bows play the Ducks in Eugene. That said:
Looks like the Texas Longhorns are coming to Les Murakami Stadium next season!
http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2010/02/27/texas_to_travel.html
what a difference a day makes 🙂
good morning to all the Tsaikos near and far, have a restful and thankful day. make memories, make memories, make memories 🙂
ST
they have you scheduled for the Quarterback Luncheon with Coach Bob Coolen? where is it at, might have to drop by………..let’s go Tsaikos!!!!
BYU being a religious institution is a problem for the PAC-10. Question: Is Notre Dame a religious institution too?
Everyone have a quiet and uneventful Sunday!
Yesterday was a wild day. Hopefully we do not have a repeat anytime soon!
Yay for mbb!!!
The Utah folks must have been wondering why they ever left the safety of bland old Utah. When USC comes in for their game maybe a faux tsunami warning can be announced for their hotel early in the morning?
Second chances? The coaches are giving Malcolm Lane more than enough chance to earn his way back. It’s truly up to him. Just like the Graunke situation. It was up to him. Yes we could use ML, but let us remember, this a player who has been out of pads for over a year. Wasn’t it the intent of taking the season off to “work on academics and things needed for graduation?” The writing is on the wall, and it does not look good for bradduh Lane. This is not a game that waits for people. I would guess that there are other players on the team who are licking their chops and hoping to take advantage of Lane’s absence.
BIK
good morning all!
good to see BB team won…..finally!
yesterday i parked up at Makapuu and had a good view of Waimanalo Bay, was hoping to see a LITTLE surging just to see? ah, but thats ok cause better all of Hawaii safe.
Well bradah-Lane, at least you not getting into the kind of trouble like the Oregon fb players reported most recently are getting kicked-off the team for. Keep your nose clean as they say even if you don’t make it back on the team.
Sure hope Lane gets his act together to take advantage of what may be his last opportunity to make the team.
Great Morning All!
Nice assessment of the MBB game last night. All around, a nice send-off for a Senior Class that hasn’t had all that much to look back on as far as W’s and L’s go. It was nice to hear them talk about the other positive aspects of their careers in Hawaii.
Best of luck to all of them and still holding out ever-so-faint hopes for some kind of miracle finish to this season.
I watched the last part of the UH MBB game, thing I noticed was that coach Nash looks a hundred years older than the last time I saw a picture of him, lot of stress showing. Maybe would be good for him to retire an not because of his win/lost record.
As a potential Senior on the Warriors team next season I think Mack needs to factor in how much leadership Lane can provide should he be allowed back on the team.
Having sat out last season because of not getting the job done academically, it may be tough to make the case that he can fill that role as one of the team leaders. Other issues may also have hurt his standing in the eyes of the other players. Sometimes lessons learned may have to include facing up to NOT getting another chance…
Hope the weather cooperates with the BaseBows’ planned DH today.
Good Morning Tsaiko Nation, glad to know you folks are safe and sound with NO major damage to the chain of Islands that make up Hawaii.
CONGRATS to the Bows as I can remember how Senior Night you play much harder as it is your last game in front of a loud vocal crowd of Hawaii fans who are cheering you on to play well for the last time in a Bow uniform as I am HAPPY they went out with a WIN !
Nevada for all sense and purposes was taken by the Tsunami BUT you play any way through all forms of distractions and I gather the Hawaii Gods GAVE the Bows some much needed love and gave Bob a little hope of sunshine. Now IF he can beat Boise in Boise and make the WAC Tournament then maybe by chance he can salvage his job BUT if the rumors are true about Reggie Theus then it is aloha for him and walking around town is going to be tough when a former Running Rebel is now running the “Big Green Machine Show”
Reggie Theus known in Los Angeles at Inglewood High School as “HOUDINI” was the 1975 Co-City player of the year with Marcus Johnson as when he played he was the Magic Johnson in the LA City League. Played against him when he was coming off the bench in Las Vegas with that GREAT Tarkanian team of Larry Moffet, Robert Smith, Tony Smith, Glen Gondo Gondreizek (RIP) Big Lewis Brown, Jumpin Jackie Robinson and Sudden Sam Smith. 28-2 that team went and lost in the Elight 8 to North Carolina Dean Smith, Phil Ford and Kevin O Koren Team.
Reggie does know the game, can recruit and he fixed New Mexico State in 2 years BUT he wants to get back in the NBA and won’t be in Hawaii long IF he gets another shot of Head Coaching in the pros BUT maybe he wants to settle down and really see Hawaii as a nice place to live and build the Bows into respectability or even a POWER as he can recruit and every where he has contacts and name recognition. He is still being paid by Sacramento so he won’t cost too much as he brings charm, articulation and media looks as he was doing pre-Laker games with him and Stu Lantz in the early 2000.
A good guy, and no non sense coach as he will bring the Bows back because he can get players as his Southern California roots are strong and his connection with HS or JC Coaches are respected and appreciated.
Have a good day Tsaiko Nation and GLAD all you good folks in Hawaii are safe and sound. Onward and Upward !
I am totally with ‘d1’ in hoping for a miracle finish for the Bows! It would help salve the “wound” of this frustrating & disappointing season. But for those that call for Nash’s firing, do you really think the result would be the same if Bill Amis & Lay & others weren’t injured & Williams hadn’t flaked-out?? No Way!! I hope they can get to the WAC Tounament and finish strong to help them springboard into next season!
I agree that Reggie Theus would be attractive but what will be his commitment to UH. If he turns around the program in a short time, his stock will rise and there will sure to be other opportunities available. You could possibly look at him like a JC transfer with a 2 year timetable.
But even with his name, can he recruit the talent that we would expect. JJ for all his accomplishments and name recognition didn’t attract the top talents except the ones who needed a 2nd chance. JJ had a deep affinity of and for the islands, and with that had a great story to share with recruits. Theus probably doesn’t have that.
Regardless, it would be a step in the direction.
Congrats to the BasketBows on a great win last night.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Bhf2. Rotfl re your prayer. 😈
ok. I better get up. This is the sleep-in I wanted to have yesterday!

“CONGRATS to the Bows”
Seriously? After the bashing you’ve been giving the players and Coach Nash? Very hard to believe your adamant anti-Nash and no pride player stance has a warm fuzzy feeling to it…but miracles happen. Thanks for feeling good about the team! 🙂
“…and walking around town is going to be tough when a former Running Rebel is now running the “Big Green Machine Show” ”
Coach Nash will still be welcome and respected by the Aloha State even if he is replaced. He will not have to hang his head and or even think of leaving his home. That, is not how we roll in Hawaii.
Well I wonder if the BB game is still on, as it’s raining pretty good here in Salt Lake/Aliamanu area.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Yep, keep the pedal to the medal and hope MBB gets into the tourney.
bhf2-
The video feed of Coconut Island was pretty cool. KGMB had an exclusive on that shot which showed “whitewater” around the reefs when the surges ebbed and flowed. I was definitely thinking of you while watching it.
Its very rainy here too, Pomai. Great weather for Ducks.
It’s always intriguing to do the what-ifs. Like what if Jarinn Akana or Reggie Theus or Bobby Knight were the next UH coach.
But let’s assume we deal with the reality, that Bob Nash will be back. A strong finish and UH’s financial plight would ensure that. Plus, we throw out the first year.
It’s pretty easy to say the team needs to run more. The reality is it’s difficult to run in league play, where everyone is scouted heavily and half the games are on the road. But, sure, to get more oomph into the offense you need rebounders and guards. Amis’ return is a start, but the focus should be on picking up a couple of more guards and a wing player who can shoot the 3s. Can’t win in the WAC without good guards. I think UH thought it had the answer this year, but circumstances showed it did not.
Thoughts?
(And, by the way, I was just messin’ with the critics. They make valid points, and it was their misfortune that I happened to attend the one game where everything went right. But that’s sports, and that showed this team has the potential.)
thats why you need to go to more games!!!
Well, off to Costco. Need to replenish some stocks. Maybe sweet and sour spare ribs over hot rice for dinner — if they have any ribs this week that is.
wafan,
If you need tp and bottled water, get plenny available in households here! 😉
i meant for good luck. not to observe more games where they don’t play well. but i think you’re right. nash has to rebuild because he’s lost a lot. and hopefully lay comes back too so they don’t have to restock all the guards. beat boise! i hate them broncos.
Chawan:
You’re right. I need to pay more attention.
So last night, we decided we were going to do some bonding.
I brought my son and my son-in-law to basketball. I ask if there’s anything in the lower section. I’m told there is, ninth row. So I say I need three tickets, and that my son is 16. And the lady said that’ll be $78. And I said: huh?
So I didn’t know we were going to be in the student section, that the ninth row is really the second row, and that with food and stuff, I would be out $120 before the national anthem.
And after that, we went bowling, and I got my butt kicked in four games.
ST the 2 minutes of lull that you were talking about when Nevada almost caught UH was happening throughout the year but longer than 2 minutes. More lime half or more a game. They pass, receive, look, fake a pass to the right, then pass to the left. Utah State passes on the perimeter much, much quicker. Its like they know where their teammates are before they receive the ball. As soon as they receive the ball, they are making a pass, or several passes, to beat UH’s defense from shifting and setting up, thus, getting easy baskets, which accounts for a higher shooting percentage. That’s coaching. I truly like Bob Nash as his commitment to Hawaii is hard to match, but he’s just not cutting it. A coach like Theus will get the fans back in the SSC with exciting and smart BB playing. I know the current players want to win and are trying their hardest, but are just not getting the right coaching.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Looks like it’s through raining for the moment. The clouds have receded over Manoa. I think the seats we have are out in the open; they might be wet. Scattered showers today. I need to find my duck call….
See ya at the ballgame!
PapaJoe:
Thanks for the assessment.
The one thing that bothered me was more than a few people questioned the effort. But it seems like the problems were schematic. I just think that there’s an inner drive — pride? — that kicks in during competition.
Slugger:
Mother Nature is just not kind to UH sports this weekend.
Why is this a negotiation? Assuming that the coaches are expecting the same things as they do for the rest of the players on the team, shouldn’t he just follow the rules like the others? And if he doesn’t want to accept the coaches’ terms, then goodbye?
It’s raining, it’s windy and it’s cold. Me thinks It’s a good day to go back to bed. Slugger if this keeps up I think I will stay home, God I’m getting too old.
More rain over Manoa…can’t find my Duck call. Dang!
If Malcolm Lane does not return to the team, can the Coach pull his scholarship and give it to someone else? Hope Malcolm gets it together, but if he does not and can’t play, it would be fair to give his scholar-ship to someone who is meeting the expectations.
I don’t usually watch hockey, but this Olympic match should be good. GO USA!!!
Pomai,
You definitely have more rain where you live. It’s not as bad in Manoa. Just have to get under cover and wear a jacket to watch the BaseBows. I might have to wear my long-sleeve UoOregon t-shirt…
hey, i dont know why you mentioned me as one of the critics yesterday. =)
I haven’t made a comment this season about mbb. I do like the fact the Nash is closing practice.. should have been doing this long ago. players do respond. something about that thick air when the doors get shut that makes you wanna focus just a little bit more..
Whatever the case with coach Nash, it would behoove the athletic dir to offer any new coach no more than a 3 year deal with any coach, any sport..
Thanks for the effort and the +5 1/2 you home dawgs you!
Good morning Tsai-kos!
Kinda windy and yucky on the Windward side this morning. Got to sleep in this morning.
Go Bows!
U-S-A! U-S-A!
Malcolm Graunke, check your ego and pull it together. This is your life test and you will pass if your heart is in the right place.
HOCKEY- USA USA USA!!!
2-1.
Good morning everyone!
…sorta 🙂
I understand the offsides rule in soccer. I never understood it in hockey. Time to Google.
OK, I understand now.
<2 minutes remain.
Team USA running out of time…..
Kona Gold; Dude you need to get a LIFE and stop hateing. I don’t write for you to post any of your ridiculous coments back to me as the truth must really hurt you as you seem to always throw back your opinion which really doesn’t count for NOTHING !
You never played athletics in your LIFE and judging from your sarcastic attitude you have a bone with me and I can’t be your ‘FIDO’ !
Man you need some sunshine and aloha BAD as I don’t need your opinion on me or how and what you think of me. STOP HATING and get off your lazy tush and supoort UH not with your mouth but with your money IF you have any HATER !
Awesome NHL All-Star game! North v South.
wafan:
Agreed. This was a good game, win or lose.
Goal!
CRW . . .
Whoo-hoo!!!
Bounced out of his glove . . . again. Figured that would come back to bite him in the butt sooner or later.
Fresh ice. Always a good thing.
Perhaps the Great White North v Southern North America?
Hey, hey.
Rainbow Cliff, Kona Gold, I know you both mean well and your hearts are in the right places.
But there will be no name calling.
So, come on, shake virtual hands.
We may disagree, but we can do it in a respectful way.
2-2.
Aren’t US goals worth more?
d1 . . .
I think it used to be because of the exchange rate. Not so sure now, though.
US #88 is from Hawai’i!
d1, wafan –
Alooha Tsai-kos…cloudy, wet, cold Sunday…Great day for baseball!…Let’s Play Two! Both games televised?
Great win for the bball seniors last night. Will miss Flemings and Baloka.
Whne he gets motivated, Flemings plays a another level. Balocka, not afraid to pound inside and take no prisoners.
Good luck to all the seniors!
ST..$78.00 for 3 just to get through the door? What if the tickets were $15 per? How much could they fill the arena?
Nash..will be back. Too many distractions and injuries this year to make a good analysis. Seems to have some transfers and recruits in the cupboard and if they pan out, might make a pretty good team next year.
That being said, the offense seem to be of the playground variety sometimes with too many standing around the outside and playing “pass da ball” around with two guys ping ponging up and down between the baseline and the top of the key. I’ve seen this offensive set at Wilson Park!..LOL! Only thing is we don’t call out a play number fo this one!
The idea is to get the other team to fall asleep then score!..LOL! (no mo shot clock das why)
Was a good emergency excercise yesterday but some boring! Got nervous watching Guy Hagi getting all amped out. Thought he might have needed some Ridlin or one big bowl of Portugese Bean soup to calm him down.
Some donkey’s out there didn’t seem to heed the warnings. I wonder if it is ok to let them fend for themselves if they were to have gotten into trouble? You get warned, if you don’t listen then if you get in trouble, ..You On Your Own! No expect somebody else to risk their life for you!
Anyhoo…pau rant fo da day..
GOOOOO…. WARRIOR BASEBALL!……sweep?….play like you can…
3rd period of the hockey game was commercial-free. I was kinda getting used to it too…..
Was wondering why there’s so many red jerseys in the stands….
“The RCMP are cracking down on speeders heading into Vancouver. For the first offense, they give you two Olympics tickets. If you are stopped a second time, they make you use them.”
HA! Good one.
Stories up here about $5000 per ticket for the gold medal hockey game. Kinda believe them.
I wonder how many USA fans are there.
US looking kind of tentative with the puck.
Darn.
😥
👿
Canada just set a new Olympic record for gold medals earned in a single Winter Games.
SJ Sharks!!!
Awesome game and wins for both the women and men of Canada hockey.
Caught the last goal. by the Red guys…was exciting…
seems too many one of three by USA but great game!
baseball now…
Go BaseBows!
Kurt Suzuki! 😀

With all of that great camera work all day, how come there’s no good angle of the puck going between the goalie’s legs?
One of the prettiest national anthems.
Did an arrangement for clarinet choir at Aiea Intermediate a loooooong time ago. I wonder if they still use it.
O Canada is a great anthem, although not as good as Hawaii Pono‘i.
Will their men’s team take to the ice as their women did? HA!
Yup. Hawai’i Pono’i is a great one!
I have absolutely no idea how Washington’s state song goes. I think the title is “Roll on Columbia” or something like that. Kind of strange the song would be about a river that divides one state from another.
OK, I am so done with hockey now.
(Although I might watch Mighty Ducks II, which was the best of the Mighty Ducks movies.)
Favorite anthem?
Tis with hearts full of pride dear Alma Mater
We rise and sing to thee
And pledge to raise our colors high
Through all the years to be
To thy name we promise to be loyal
Ever faithful ever true
Roosevelt, to thee, our hearts will sing …
All hail, hail, hail.
(OK, “true” and “hail” don’t rhyme, “thy” is the best part of a chicken, and “thee” is what I say instead of “see” when I lisp.)
aloha cliff, one game does not make the season. we can sit here, wish and dream all we want but bob has had his chances. its time for jim to do the right thing, pull the plug and start moving forward in the right direction. if jim decides to prolong the current situation, it will show a lack of vision by the a.d., and jim will regret this in the end. people expect the top dawg to lead and make the correct moves, albeit tough emotional choices. now is the time jim, do the right thing, lets get this over with, nothing will change next year or the year after that. the successful coaches are twofold. one recruits and surrounds himself with great talent that find it hard to lose. second, strategizer that recruits to fill his system and has the know how to make that system work for him. bob has neither, esp. the sad outdated flex offense, forever tied to the sorry 50% winner riley. bob, do the right thing, sooner the better, now is the time, leave with dignity, dont get forced out. jim, tell bob to resign after next game, lets do it the right way, jim, you know what to do if he is adamant in staying. com’n guys, mr. cliff sanchez speaks the truth, dont let the program fall any more. cliff, i like you gave the man a chance but deep down, i knew that this was riley’s protege and that concerned me a great deal because the moment i saw the “flex”, i wanted to cry, i knew he was done in time. sorry for the truth. aloha cliff.
Responding to Rainbow Cliff…dude, you need to get your facts straight when posting….There is only one Kona Gold and that is me, you need to repsond to Kona Glory. I don’t know who Kona Glory is, but I agree with some of things he said, it does seem that you have some animosity towards Coach Nash.
I hope a lot of folks show up at the mvb game tomorrow evening! $8 is a good start. But, what to do with all of those airline tickets and hotel reservations that were not used? I sure hope they schedule another mvb game on Maui — soon!
Any report how the BaseBows are doing? Awfully quiet.

In looking back on past posts, I don’t think anyone, including myself, said Rainbowcliff was wrong about Coach Nash in regards to his coaching and what has transpired, but I too agree with some of the things Kona Glory has posted. You gotta admit though, it was great to come out on the winning side last night though! Great win for the seniors!
Great effort by USA Hockey team!
Let’s Go Baseball Bows!
Thank you, DPK!
Go BaseBows!!!
In the fifth
Rainbow Cliff,
I’ve been reading your posts for a long time and it sounds like you are mad at UH for not treating you right after your graduation. I know that you travel to football games so why don’t you meet with JD at one of the receptions and let him know your feelings. The ranting and ravings on the blog won’t do much but give you carpal tunnel from typing so much. I’m sure JD would take into consideration your suggestions and work to improve relations with former players. Mahalo.
2 – 1 Bows
Whoo-hoo!!!
Yum. BBQ places on the Travel Channel featured Author Bryant’s. Good little place with lots of food. Ordered their ribs once. It came on a plastic food tray with a huge pile of crisp fries as the first layer topped with the ribs. Oh my. Two meals for two people.
Time for dinner!
Hey bighilofan2
Any interest in the UH Big Island regent vacancy?
Me no thinks it’s very much of a reality that Bob Nash returns.
Me also no thinks that Lane is a leader. He is a real good player though.
The skin and guts of this football team is changing. Change along or get left behind. Me thinks at least.
BIK
2012 Summer Olympics may feature the 1st Samoan athlete to represent their island nation.
Here is a glimpse of that Tsaiko son as he competes in a Track & Field meet for USC. He is also an *O* lineman capable of filling in at either the Center or Guard position for USC.

‘Bows win the first game, 5-2.
Second game to follow. Sweep in the making?
I think Nash returns if Bows make WAC tournament.
Pono: For the LAST time I have no ill feelings about what happen to me at UH as I have been good for the past 29 years with what I have done after leaving Hawaii. There is no “treating right” after you leave UH as when it’s done it’s done and either you get a job or hopefully you get paid professionally or over seas. I chose to let a little info out on this blog of why former mainland athletes won’t get involve with UH and of course you take it put your spin on it and come up with your WRONG conclusions.
Man, I don’t dwell on what happen to me at UH I am fine gone on and done many accomplishments after finishing so trying to tell me to talk to Jim Donovan about my concerns sir “it isn’t all that serious” for me to waste his or my time. Jim got other important things to do then listen to me about my concerns with former mainland athletes, or Bob Nash or Hawaii Basketball.
I have NOTHING to do what will happen to Bob Nash as that is between him and UH and his boss SO if he stays he stays if he goes he goes I won’t lose sleep over it. You have to deal with the results not I as Hawaii Athletics is not the only game in town where I live I just voice my opinion on this blog as MANY of you do BUT I don’t take it to heart as actually I enjoy reading the many bloggers comments then oppose to me posting when and what I have to say.
I hope this clears your so call statment of “ranting and ravings” as there is NONE !
Huh?
’nuff said already. pau.
Don’t worry Cliff. In my book you’re alright, and I think in a lot others, too. Your basketball resume runs deep. You’ve played for UH. You’ve grew up playing BB in LA area. Seen some of the biggest stars in the game. Plus you know the game inside and out.
So to me, and maybe others, what you have to say **carries more weight… more so than others**, and especially when the subject is regarding UH BB and Coach Nash’s coaching..
Add to the fact that you’ve revealed your true identity, have nothing to hide or to gain, and only opinionated what you see without biases and prejudices, I think it’s ridiculous that you are being the recipient of others attacks.
Cliffsanchezfan: Howz It Kind Sir and Mahalo for having my back. As you KNOW me through our words I love athletics and played it “HARD” my entire life and still do to this date as I was told by
Aloha gang, hope all is well after Saturday’s “Tsunami” teaser.
Thank God all is good and safe!
– Please allow me to jump into all the talk regrading men’s basketball at UH. Love Bob Nash, love the committment he’s made to the program for over years as player, assisitant coach and head coach. He deserved a chance after Riley Wallace’s “forced” exit, HOWEVER, he got his chance, and SADLY, he hasn’t gotten it done, I would be VERY surprised if he returned as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors.
– Malcom Lane, ENOUGH already. How many chances can one kid get? Despite his talents, Malcolm’s actions over the years has proven to me anyway, he does not take being a Warrior seriously, doesn’t take school seriously and doesn’t take being a teammate seriously.
I mean taking last year off to “concentrate on school”, yeah, I believe that. Trust me folks, that was NOT the reason, NOT AT ALL!!!!!
Kid has issue, cut him loose, let him go deal with them.
He doesn’t want to be here let someone who does try.
On a very positive note, props to Tommy Heffernan…since taking over strength and conditioning for the UH football team, the Warriors have looked GREAT. Talked to a few of the kids and attendance for off-season workouts have been throught the roof.
RainbowCliff:
I love your honesty and I support your opinions, thoughts and insights. Like you, I have had many bloggers here turn against me, call me names, suggest I go eslewhere etc., however, yours is unlike most of theres. It’s real, it’s from an athlete, a player and NOT a “jock-sniffer” so to speak.
Keep up with your thoughts!
I would though, love to hear what some of the things you mentioned you “shared” before, not the “ill-will” as you called it, but whatever you call it, I missed it.
Be well.
Continue from #135 as I got zapp cliffsanchezfan I do apologize “as I was told” by UH doctors when I had severe case of tendonitis in both knees “that you will NEVER play again” as they had no understanding at that time of how to cure tendonitis as motrin, knee pads, ice, heat pads or cortizone was the only conclusion to a dismal and final play in a Hawaii uniform my last years playing for UH.
With that negative medical attitude and all hope given up on me at the young age of 19 years I was “DETERMINE” to cure it and not play in pain as I did my last 3 years EVERYDAY for UH. It took 30 years of talking to other medical professionals, College Trainers, Nutritionalists and weights leg extensions to maintain the pain from getting any worst as I am PROUD to say to you that finding XXX fish oil this last year I have NO pain in my knees or joints as when I quote on this blog that I go out and DOMINATE LA athletics it is not a brag but a rejuvenation of athletic life to FINALLY play with out any pain and play the game that I have always LOVE to play with Heart, Skill and Determination !
Cliffsanchezfan I have BEAT the odds my entire life and when I played professional basketball in Brazil at 34 years of age and BEAT out every College point guard for that ONE spot as I got in TREMENDOUS shape riding my 10 speed bike like I did in Hawaii and riding inclines, declines, slopes and hills just to strengthen the tendons and muscles around the knee area I was OVER JOY with so much emotion when the Coaches called my name as the AMADOR ( Point Guard In Brazil) I dropped to my knees and wept as “I DID IT” with stellar tough defense and distributing the ball to the Brazilian players as the younger and quicker college athletes could not BELIEVE that a 34 year old has been BEAT them out as they left the gym in disgust !
PRIDE cliffsanchezfan as that is what I come with to this blog, no bitterness or anger just good old fashion PRIDE as I wake up everyday putting the shorts on, lacing up the shoes and head band READY to go with NO more pain in both knees and playing at a high level as a 4.5 singles and doubles usta tennis player and walking into Magic Johnson’s gym SCHOOLING these young cats at the good old age of 51 years.
Mahalo sir for all your LOYALTY to me as when ever I see you my good FAN the prime rib, prawns and Heineken beer is ALL on me !
st,
if i were a betting man.
i’d bet “eh no make!” double or nothing.
that if you were to ask jim leahey which sport he enjoys broadcasting the most?
that he would say baseball.
in fact, wouldn’t jim make for a great live chat guest?
Anonymous kind sir MAHALO for your supporting and wisdom words that you have shared. Appreciate your respected words to me as I do have a basketball back ground that runs VERY deep as it is a game that has blessed me over the years and I have seen it at ALL levels and have made long lasting relationships with past players, NBA administrators and past / present College Coaches, High School Coaches who are coaching after playing for me as Head Coach when I was at Verbum Dei, St. Bernards and Directing Slam N Jam Summer Basketball League here in Los Angeles.
I feel bless for all the experience’s BUT the one key to all these successes is that I am a “peoples person” as I enjoy that gift which has allow me to meet some wonderful folks over the years and put me in leadership roles in athletics and caring for God’s disadvantage children.
No malice sir, nothing but LOVE, PRIDE and ENTHUSIASM every day in life. I don’t dwell on the negative posters as I really don’t know them or know what gender, race or religion they are as I am not here to “JUDGE” but really to read what you good folks are talking about and “ENJOY” the intelligent writers that MANY of you are as I could not write a lick in College BUT over the years since graduating I practice, got jobs that required me to write objectively and surrounded myself with good writers who helped me with sentence structuring, understanding run on sentences, building my vocabulary and “writing for the reader to understand and READ” !
Anonymous, by no means I am no William Shakespeare BUT SIR I am proud that I can communicate with you in an intelligent manner in which my writing skills were just HORRIBLE with no relief in sight. But like always when my back is to the wall I just get this ‘DETERMINATION’ to want to succeed and I manage to overcome obstacles along the way.
Perserverance Sir it builds ‘CHARACTER’ !
Have a GREAT evening anonymous and thank you for your support !
Sorry ST but as someone that coached and played hockey Mighty Ducks 2 is a sham! 😆
Knucklepuck? No such thing… You’d get cleaned out in a second trying to get that thing set up.
EH NO MAKE ! Mahalo for your supporting words as I just try to converse with you good folks with what I know and what has been reveal to me by Hawaii athletes who played with me during my era and why they don’t support. I gather from I let out negative bloggers has taken it and branded me as a mal discontent ex-player which is “FARTHEST” from the truth.
I NOW realize that inside information that I do get I will NOT post it here as I see from certain disgruntle bloggers they can’t understand it or deal with it as I have been taught a valuable lesson as that “inside Hawaii athletics information” I will keep it to myself.
Any more detail kind sir that you would like to know you can e-mail me at cliffsanchez@gmail.com as that will be the best format as oppose to writing it here and waking up the “DEAD” !
EH NO MAKE Mahalo for your GREATNESS and thank you kindly for your encouraging remarks. You and annonymous are on my tab IF we ever meet !
Have a good evening !
Kazz:
I’m messin’ with you.
I actually grew up watching hockey in New York. (My bro got me a N.Y. Rangers jersey for Christmas.)
We even used to have to season tickets to the New York Raiders of the old World Hockey Association. Terrible team, but the league begat the Edmonton Oilers (nee Alberta Oilers).
So, there is no such thing as a knucklepuck. But those were fun movies.
Aloha Gang!
Been a while. Sorry, but been a little busy with SO many family and work related tasks/chores obligations. Finally found my way back to the blog two days ago only to read about the HA sale and Jeff Reinebold’s unfortunate circumstances. Also had a chance to talk to ST who insisted he’ll be out here for Pro Day, since that’s only 5 weeks away and he won’t be sitting in Ala Moana Center until a week later.
Also, spoke w/ RainbowCliff yesterday. The only thing I can say about him is that there can’t be any former UH athlete that still carries the passion for the opportunity granted to him and his support in return. It doesn’t matter if I see him here in L.A, NOLA, San Jose, or Vegas. The only clothing he appears to own is UH apparrel. There aren’t many “men of a certain age” that proudly don their school colors on a daily basis. He has no axe to grind with anyone, but is truthful in saying that many former UH players (all sports), and even those who have gone on to be successful in the pro ranks let the door hit them in the okole as they boarded the flight back to the mainland.
Got an article from Margo the other day on JD and the budget concerns within the athletic department. Will read it later tonight or tomorrow. However, firing coaches costs money they can’t afford. I had to read ST’s post a couple of times about the cost of a basketball ticket. $26??? How about lowering the prices, more people will show up, increase parking and concession revenues and in the long run the deficit will be chipped away at. (Just my $.02, since the industry I work in can’t figure that out. Lower movie ticket prices, get more butts in the seats and sell more $5 popcorn and sodas.)
PS – Glad everyone in the 808 dodged a potential disaster yesterday.
I can understand the frustration of this basketball season.
This is a once proud program. Its goal should be to compete for titles, not avoid being the only team not to make the league tourney.
That said, the reality is if the Bows make the postseason, Nash gets another year. He’s relatively inexpensive (around $250,000 a year), and UH doesn’t have enough money to bring in another coach. What would it take? $500,000. And that’s the low end. UH doesn’t have $500,000.
So the best thing is to take the current situation and make it better.
To be sure, there is a concern about the disconnect between former players and the university. It’s noticeable in almost every sport.
Except for a handful — Rich Miano, Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Emlen Kahoano, Anthony Carter, June Jones — you just don’t see many giving back.
Maybe more have a connection to their high schools.
Maybe there needs to be more mutual connection.
Whatever the case, something is missing. Like Cliff Sanchez or not, he does love his alma mater. Now, if we only can get him to buy some H logo stuff …
By the way, how can Utah State being any good?
I mean, come on. UH used to kick Stew Morrill’s Colorado State teams all of the time.
Parker McLaughlin won $13,697 this weekend, tied for 53rd place
Howz It Rich2176, MAHALO bra for the kind words as I do own other clothing BUT wearing Hawaii is “RIGHT” for me as I sleep, eat and breathe Hawaii in which I share the ‘ALOHA” everywhere I go.
VERY PROUD ex-scholarship student athlete and even happier TODAY meeting a GREAT Hawaii gentlemen in your self who represents Hawaii LA VIP as I ride your coat tails, hat and cane to any Cinderella Ball you may come across Oh Golfer Great One !
Good to see you posting again and reading your candid remarks. This passion that I have is only accomplish because of the CARE I have for people especially when it comes to Hawaii as my experiences alone playing as a BOW with the “SUPPORT” that I recieved will never be forgotten but to “give back” in which Hawaii and it’s wonderful people gave me soooooooo much more !
A pleasure my kama aina friend as when we meet at Stick N Stein your favorite meal plate is on me !

ST ~ Mahalo for the tickets!

In the event we are looking for a new mbb coach. there’s a name that may or may not surface as a candidate Gib Arnold – son of Frank Arnold.

ST ~
Roosevelt HS kids ran the concessions at Murakami today.
true dat slugger 😆
Gib was once Hawaii’s high school Gatorade Player of the Year.
#136 Eh No Make,
regarding the workouts, i agree, TH is doing a very good job with the players. he has a very strong emphasis on CORE workouts, and i have noticed a dramatic difference in ‘the beast’. he has bought into the program ‘big time’ and is training 6 days a week, and sometimes 2x….. exciting times for the Warriors and we shall see the dividends in a few weeks. the big difference will be in Fall Camp……and that is going to be a-w-e-s-o-m-e…… 🙂 🙂 🙂
Tsai Meister, FUNNY as always sir as I do have other attire BUT Hawaii feels my closet and ALOHA feels my LOVE !
Travel LA with nothing but 808 as I really get a lot of interest from my athletic and professional colleagues. Will be volunteer aiding Belinda Nagashima this month SECURING the admissions for future California UH freshmen as my table is ALL filled up with eager NEW Hawaii students as welll as wealthy parents who wants to know what the OHANA is all about as when I tell them ALL about your polynesian LOVE, Parents WANT to go and become a BOW and tell their own accepted UH child you stay and pay the bills I want “ALA MOANA and SHAVE ICE” !
Take care Tsai Meister and MAHALO for your GREATNESS !
brew808,
#106 ~ I gave AnnodahLiz a Hawaiian flag to wave from the stands at the Oakland Coliseum when Kurt Suzuki comes up to bat. I’m going to miss spring training games. 🙁
Thanks for the link to the article.
ST,
Ok. I wasn’t serious anyway, besides, truth betold, that dang movie got me playing in the first place… THEN I ended up hating it. 😆
Speaking of New York hockey, too bad this was before my “time” but the stories of the Rangers and Islanders rivalries are astonishing. Like the one where a bunch of Ranger fans attempted to block the emergency vehicle exit for an ambulance carrying away an injured Islanders player… Wow… like W-O-W!!! That’s what you call “HATE” or “DRUNK”…
Everytime I think of New York NHL hockey, that is the first thing to come into my mind.
Al is right. It just “seems” like nowadays Jim Leahey enjoys doing baseball coverage more than others.
Must be all the “talk story” time he and Pal get during the broadcasts.
Jim Leahey is an ICON, but I guess at this stage the pace of baseball seems to be MUCH more favorable for him.
Then again, he and Pal have easily got to be much “closer” on a personal level than he and Lori Santi, Lisa Strand-Ma’a, Artie Wilson, or Sean Carney which makes everything easier for him.
Stephen – your comments concerning former student-athletes – and other alumni – are right on. In fact, there’s a bill waiting for a final vote in the State House – HB 2670 HD1 which should help address the situation: NOTE: The bill was submitted by Mark Takai and Jerry Chang, the House’s Higher Education chair.
The full House will most likely vote on the bill on Wednesday. Once it passes the House, it then goes through the same hearing process in the Senate – first the Committee on Higher Education and then Ways & Means. Will let folks know when it will be time to submitt testimony.
If there are differences in the two versions, then the bill will go to Conference Committee. When they come to an agreement, there will be a formal vote in the both the Senate and House.
Over the years, I’ve seen maybe two bills a Session in which there is no agreement. This is not controversial enough to warrant that happening.
If it passes, then it goes to Lingle – she can sign it, veto it, or let it go into law without her signature. If the bill gets through the legislative process by mid-April, DaGov has ten working daysto do her thing. If it is not completed until the very end of the Session, then she has 45 working days to sign, veto or let it go through. That should occur sometime after the 10th of July + or – a day in either direction.
A lazy day of Bowsball, food, and friendship, but it was really cold. Not wet – I don’t think it rained at any point after the 1 pm start.
Mahalo Slugger for the Kit & Kitchen recommendation for lunch. We’re going to have dinner there soon.
Hope to see some familiar faces tomorrow night aat the volleyball match.
Is it football season yet? Darn it! Ohh well…
Here’s to the team in GREEN!
Funny how the state decided to close Hilo and decided to keep the rest of the airports open. I mean, I see the point of keeping them open for a period of time but to wait and see what will happen in Hilo is a big mistake in my eyes. Let’s take for example how long it would have taken the waves to reach honolulu after the initial wave from hilo. Would honolulu have been able to evacuate the entire airport in 35 minutes? I don’t think so. I hope the state would look into it before anyone gets seriously injured. Other wise, I thought they did a good job. Glad the state of Hawaii dodge one and there were no injuries, fatalities, or damages.
BTW, I never understood why the Pacific Tsunami Center is on “low grounds.”
Here’s to the team in GREEN!
you da man, cliff.
Postmanke:
Thanks. I’ve heard Gib’s name being tossed around. He’s been quite the guy at SC.
I was covering preps when I picked Gib Arnold to the all-state basketball team. It was quite a year, if I recall. I think Garrett Gabriel, Billy Schulte, James Williams and Pio Sagapolutele were on it, too. Or was it Brad Stewart. Heck, it was too long ago.
Nitey Nite and Sweet Sweep BYU Dreams!
make no mistake about it…
a revenge motivated byu cougar team awaits the warriors tomw.
i am sure the cougars of byu want to keep their #4 rating by beating the warriors tomw night.
i am sure that had a lot to do with them sticking around to play the second game inspite of costs.
The Olympics are pau. We now return you to your regular programming…
GO WARRIORS!!!
Aloha everyone,
Had a nice time at the doubleheader w/ WassupDoc & DrDoc. It was also nice to see a contingent of Tsaikos there. Although I’m glad UH took 3 of 4 games from Oregon, it looked like they missed the opportunity for a sweep because Coach Trap was either slow to use the ‘hook’ on Little / wanted to give him he opportunity to pitch out of the jam(s). Unfortunately, after the walks, hit batsman & wild pitches/passed balls, that’s all she wrote.
Good Monday morning!
Have a great week.
Happy birthday to curveball where ever your riding the waves
Great Morning All!
Happy Birthday curveball!
Good Luck to the VolleyBows!
Hold on to your hats, erryboddy. It’s gonna be a-blowin’ today!
HiHo….
Postmanke –
Gib Arnold, c’mon, PLEASE!
No not you kind sir, but Gib Arnold. He’s the LAST guy our University should ever consider.
If he’s even in the conversation, I will lead the rallies against it.
His dad, Frank, well, to BE frank, not a nice human being at all. Remember all things he said about Hawaiians being lazy…? Said it “on the record” too. Apologized to Kentucky Fried Chicken because he told Andre Morgan to lose weight and stop going there (obvious African American generalization).
Oh, NOT to mention Gib’s been at USC under the current regime as well as under Tim Floyd. Do NOT make me mention the name O.J. Mayo.
Guess who’s right in the middle of things with that situation…?
ST – really, Gib Arnold was first team all state? I understand you voted for him, but did he finish first team…?
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Have a great day, everyone!
Hauoli Lahanau, curveball!
Ok, now I’m getting the picture. Nash stays because of his 31 year loyalty to Hawaii coupled with the athletic department not being in a financial situation to replace him and bring in a new coach. Ok, it does make sense on the surface. But given the fact that he “would have one year to get things back on track,” tell me what recruits would want to come out here under those circumstances? What makes us think that injuries won’t happen again next year? Given all of that, what if we go through another horrible season again? It may seem expensive to “go in another direction” sooner than later, but if we don’t, we may feel the sting of these Nash years for many seasons to come.

E No Make:
Gib Arnold was a good basketball player.
When I said I “picked” him, it meant I added up the votes. We had a panel of coaches and correspondents, from each island and every league, and we’d poll them. But, yeah, I used to have to cover ILH quadrupleheaders in the Blaisdell. Let me tell you, the wall was the third quarter of the third game. Especially since we had to do our own stats.
It sounds like the NFL might go to a modified version of the college overtime rules instead of having sudden-death overtime.
176 – the guy can recruit the one and dones! =)
I would think Hawaii would be a great place for the one and done. Heck, if you’re only going to play 1 or 2 years why not play in Hawaii. The beach, girls with hummers, etc.. easy sell!
Nash’s team has three issues– (1) Injury to Amis and guards, (2) Recruits not suited to an uptempo attack, and (3) Nash has a great basketball mind, but can’t get the players– who have not come from disciplined teams– to execute what he wants– that’s the killer.
He made some nice adjustments to the offense and the defense over the last few games. The Nevada game was a defensive effort as much as offensive against the top offense in the WAC.
Outdated flex motion? Utah State runs it just like Riley did, Gonzaga runs it, Maryland and Michigan State run it, and many more teams run some variation of it. Not my favorite offense, but it works and would do the job if Nash had recruited more coachable players– his bad.
