NFL combine: Speed, jumping tests

• NFL teams timed Greg Salas’ time in the 40 yard dash between 4.49 seconds and 4.54 seconds during his first — and best — attempt at today’s NFL Scouting Combine. There was some drama when NFL.com initially reported that Salas ran “5.0.” It turned out that NFL.com had Salas at 4.50, but a statistician mistakenly punched in only the “5” and “0.” Salas had a 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot broad jump, and times of 6.65 seconds in the three-cone drill (seventh best among the receivers),  and 11.21 in the 60-yard shuttle (ninth). He initially had an unofficial time of 4.10 in the 20-yard shuttle, but then was given a slower figure.

• NFL teams credited Alex Green’s 40 time between 4.46 seconds and 4.48 seconds. He ran the three-cone drill in 6.91 seconds (seventh best among running backs), and went 9 feet 6 in the broad jump and 36 inches in the vertical jump.

• As expected, Kealoha Pilares did not participate in the speed tests at today’s NFL Scouting Combine. Pilares was cleared to run a couple of weeks ago after suffering a torn PCL in the Hawaii Bowl.

* * * * *

Cam Newton ran a 4.58 (unofficial) in the 40 on his first attempt. He originally was timed at 4.60 but then his number was adjusted by .02. He ran a 4.59 on his second attempt. But he had an impressive broad jump of 10-6.

Happy birthday to Jennifer Kelleher, your typical Irish-Filipina from Waianae who works for a New York newspaper.

No worries… heal up and do it right on our Pro Day!

Been reading John Elway’s interviews in the Denver post recently regarding the scouting combine ( which he didn’t participate in his days from his dads advice.
Now with him being a decision maker on the draft for the Broncos, his perspective is highly regarded to what he is looking for in a draft prospect. It’s more on the competiveness and interview that ranks highest for his interests. All the sprints, jumping around, throwing, etc. takes a back seat. He likes to watch tape of their games while in uniform instead.

Salas went 10-0 on his second broad-jump attempt. Not sure what he did on the first jump.

  8. Michigan Warrior February 27, 2011 6:41 am

I like what CoolEthan wrote in #2 above regarding John Elway’s approach. We know Salas does well in interviews, and his competitiveness is evident in every game he plays. And then… we have him doing 10′ on his broad jump… and I’m wondering… what does his broad jump number have to do with how he performs on the field during GameDay? It just struck me as kinda funny, how this dog and pony show is run.

  9. LizKauai -iPad February 27, 2011 6:42 am

    Go Warriors !!!

  12. LizKauai -iPad February 27, 2011 6:53 am

The Combine announcers seem to adjust the emphasis according to how the favorites perform. If memory serves me right, Colt, the accurate one, was reported low by arm strength, vs a more golden Flacco. The pre-combine emphasis this year is accuracy…. Pffft.
And funny how “pass-happy system” comments seem to have subsided after “pass-happy” Green Bay won the SB.
    Go Combine Warriors!

  13. d1shima February 27, 2011 6:54 am

Greg Salas just ran a 5.0 (unofficial) 40. That is not good news.

  16. jkk808 February 27, 2011 7:09 am

That’s really slow. His second run is coming up, hope he can improve it.

  17. 808ike February 27, 2011 7:14 am

    Top 20.

  18. jkk808 February 27, 2011 7:18 am

Salas goes 4.57 unofficial in his second run. Announcers think they messed up timing first run.

  19. d1shima February 27, 2011 7:19 am

    btw,

What was Pops Leahey apologizing for the end of the broadcast last night? Something he said about the Rainbow Dancers?

  20. Stephen Tsai February 27, 2011 7:21 am

I stop watched Salas on both attempts!

    First attempt: 4.54

    Second attempt 4.51

This unofficial time guy for nfl network is hung over and needs glasses!

  24. Stephen Tsai February 27, 2011 7:29 am

One of the NFL teams is crediting Salas at 4.49 seconds.

  25. Jonathan8922 February 27, 2011 7:35 am

Yeah agree probably on the second attempt Stephen! I’ve clocked alot of guys in my days and these unofficial times are way off on this group thus far! I had Torrey Smith and Terrance Tolliver with better times then they posted!

    Jonathan:
Thing to remember is the announcers aren’t in the dome. They’re in the hotel next to the dome.
I think at the end of the workouts, the scouts get together and come up with a consensus on times. Not exactly as scientific as everyone imagines.

  28. d1shima February 27, 2011 7:46 am

Why doesn’t the NFL use electronic timing?

  29. koakane ip4 February 27, 2011 7:54 am

just saw Sllas in catching drill looks like he doing fine

    d1 got xtta tic today?

  30. Stephen Tsai February 27, 2011 7:54 am

What they should do is give a player a 10-yard running start, hit the laser when he crosses the starting line, then hit it when he crosses the finish line. I bet they even can use a chip to trigger the electronic stopwatch.

  38. BG February 27, 2011 8:57 am

    Good morning all!

Just read yesterday’s blog. So funny! There’s one poster who should be named the blog’s conditioning coach. Really. Continually jumping to conclusions without verifiable facts so he/she must be in great condition. Then gets everyone else running around to jump on his/her bandwagon or defend some student-athlete. Just funny to read all that!

OK. Enough amusement. Just think I’ll give the troll treatment and skip over to the posts that from Tsaikos I know. My perogative…right?!!

  39. BG February 27, 2011 8:59 am

  41. LizKauai (macbook) February 27, 2011 9:07 am

I’m putting Salas’ Combine activity on facebook videos…
He’s looking very good to me…

  42. Garret February 27, 2011 9:10 am

Maybe having the wrong time for Salas being reported before was actually good for him. 4.58 sounds a *lot* better than 5.0…and obscures how Salas was trying to get a time faster than 4.5 at the combine.

Salas is seeking fast times at the combine. As a Chino High senior, Salas ran the 40 in 4.47 seconds. In 2007, as a second-year UH freshman, Salas completed the distance in 4.57 seconds. He said his combine goal is to run a sub-4.5.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20110224_Tested_and_measured_3_Warriors_to_perform_at_NFL_combine.html

  43. RedZone February 27, 2011 9:13 am

Alex Green 4.55 unofficial in 40.

  44. Stephen Tsai February 27, 2011 9:15 am

The commentators on Camera 1 have Billy V. disease.

  45. BG February 27, 2011 9:15 am

Watched the combine yesterday for about 20 minutes before getting bored. Obvious that almost all of the athletes running the 40 had gotten some sprint training. A few may have gotten coaching but forgot what they learned. lol

d1 #28. Agreed. It’s not expensive…compared to the costs of the whole combine. Pressure plate at the start and laser at the finish linked to a computer. Pretty cheap and way more accurate than what they’re doing now. Faster too. With mutiple human timers, you have to record and reset. With the electronic system, hit reset and ready for the next guy. If the next guy has been staging while the previous runner is going down the track, you can keep ’em running one after another. Oh wait! No time for the talking heads to insert their valuable, information packed nuggets of cr@p.

  46. RedZone February 27, 2011 9:17 am

I think the runningbacks should have to carry the coconut in the 40. This is not a track meet.

  47. BG February 27, 2011 9:18 am

Apologizing for #45. Beautiful morning in paradise on a Sunday, family blog…what was I thinking?!!

Howzit kawika49? Always good to see you around. Wife and I went to a big military to-do at Ko Olina last night. All the big Army Reserve “stars” were there all the way to the national CO. Good to see some familiar faces. Had a good time, but, in looking at all the young, unfamiliar faces I was reminded of the remarkable talent of our younger generation. We’re in good hands and ole soldiers should “fade away”.

I’m done. I just wanted to watch Green run.

  56. al February 27, 2011 10:14 am

green’s 4.52 will go a long way for alex. that coupled with his 20 reps yesterday may have solidified his being drafted now.

  57. al February 27, 2011 10:19 am

all it takes is one guy/scout or one team to like you. perhaps that 4.49 time will be his meal ticket.

i am thinking that salas will get the call by the 3rd round. an insider or was it a little birdie said that one team may pick him in the second round. i suppose running a sub 4.6 is good at this point especially when one considers what davone bess did three years ago.

  58. al February 27, 2011 10:20 am

pilares needs to have that good 40 in a few weeks at the pro day. all he needs to do is run a 4.5 forty and his stock will rise. perhaps a 6th rounder he will be.

    Sorry, no mo.

  62. Derek February 27, 2011 10:58 am

With 1 scholarship to fill, I think Arnold will go for a point guard. The problem is that if Ostrowski continues to play football and basketball he won’t be available for the basketball team until after Christmas, assuming Hawaii is playing at least in the Hawaii Bowl. That means he would not be playing in at least about 9 to 10 games. This is why Arnold has to get another point guard, besides Bobby Miles. Gerry Blakes is listed as a point guard, but we have not seen him play yet. What is Jace Tavita’s position? New recruited commits Stevens, 6’7″, Harvey,6’5″ and Biggs, 6’7″ are either small forwards or maybe Stevens could be a power forward. Pi’i Minns is a guard, but I’m not sure if he’s a point or more a shooting guard. You can never have enough good guards who can handle the ball. If Arnold can find somebody who has a better than 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio that would be good. One prospect possibly is Andrej Pajovic out of Montenegro who is playing in Massachusetts now.
He might be interested. Also, JC point guard Pierre Jackson from College of Southern Idaho.
At any rate, it is very interesting. Arnold is set w/ Joaquim and Rozitis down low. We have a void at PF w/ Amis leaving. Thomas is only 6’7″ and erratic as a PF so that’s a dilemma.
Wiseman will get better and better. He just needs to shoot about a 1,000 jump shots a day to knock down the 15 to 20 ft jumper. I like his hustle and his desire. With Zane Johnson and Bo Barnes we’re in good shape at the shooting guard position. I think the #1 priority for the team next year is to handle the ball better and keep the turnovers down. But, from what I see Arnold has improved the talent level and the athleticism of the players and that’s what we really need. Comments? Discussion? New news?

  63. Kazz February 27, 2011 11:00 am

What did sCam Newton do with his earning for his combine appearance?

  64. Kazz February 27, 2011 11:01 am

    Pomai,

We go learn da Samoan slap dance fo perform before every softball game!

I got inspired last night during the senior night ceremonies. 😆

Kazz it’s called sa sa not slap dance.

  73. Guy in the office February 27, 2011 11:54 am

Since our favorite (only?) morning paper offered little detail, can anyone who saw yesterday’s UH baseball game tell me how David Peterson scored the winning run other than he “used” two wild pitches after singling to start the 15th. Was he sacrificed to second, took third on a wild pitch and then scored? I really don’t know; very critical detail not in the story.

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid February 27, 2011 12:03 pm

    http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers#year=2011&workout=FORTY_YARD_DASH&position=QB-RB-TE-S-DL-LB-CB-OL-SPEC

Alex is among the best, but they show him as a receiver. Confusing.

  75. kokomo dentist February 27, 2011 12:30 pm

  76. Guy in the office February 27, 2011 12:33 pm

Ooops. Re: 73. Got my answer; found the play-by-play details on the UH web site.

  77. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 12:36 pm

#73, anyone who depends on the SA to get the record straight is inviting trouble:
Here are the details per gametracker–
“Peterson singles up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Blake, then to third on a wild pitch. Peterson scores on Knebel’s first pitch, a wild pitch, to Matt Harrison”.

  78. Guy in the office February 27, 2011 12:41 pm

hawaiiansun: thanks. fyi: after peterson took third, swasey struck out for the second out. frustrating because these important details could easily be said in one sentence. think it was very pertinent. also should have said how long the game lasted; had to find that (4 hours, 30 minutes) from the box score in the scoreboard section.

  79. DPK groupie February 27, 2011 12:43 pm

Hi DPK. For NFL combine info –

Sort by Workout, Position, Year by clicking on buttons at top. Blue (on my screen) means ON. Then hit Update.

For AG 40 time – have blue buttons ON for 40 yard dash, RB, 2011. Only to top 15 are listed.

  80. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 12:44 pm

It is obvious to all what a difference a playmaker brings to Hawaii’s game. Miah has provided direct testimony by his play. When he fouled out Bobby Miles was his usual-self until he started to penetrate like Miah to keep the fire burning against a resurrgent NMSU last nite.
Point guards are worth every scholie. If Coach has only one remaining he would do well to bring in someone like Miah who makes the whole team perform better.

  81. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 12:52 pm

Pal makes note of Swazey’s short-swing, but this kid can hit. True, he did strike out twice with runners in scoring position, but he was the one who hit the dramatic three-run double to RF that tied the game in the 9th and sent it into Xtra innings. He goes with the pitches and hits to all fields. Should be fun watching him play in ’11.

  82. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 12:57 pm

I realize Coach wants to platoon some hitters depending on the pitcher’s throwing side, but there is an old axiom in baseball, dont kool-down hitters by not letting them bat. Trap would be wise to listen.

  83. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 1:07 pm

Last year, the wahine SB team had the luxury of having individual players getting streaky and carrying the team with their bats for consecutive games. WE had 4-5 players with explosive batting firepower.
Team wahine 2011 looks different. We need all nine to click.
This season, the whole maybe greater than the sum of its parts.
You can bet, Coach Coolen, is up to the challenge….we shall see.

  84. BG February 27, 2011 1:11 pm

I am reminded AGAIN that I need to re-check things before trying to be a know it all. I watched a bit more of the combine late this morning and focused on the equipment rather than the runners in the 40. Right away it was obvious that they are using electronic equipment. You can see the controller near the start line and the time pops up as the runner is walking back. Perhaps some coaches/nfl personnel are also doing individual timings. Might account for all the discrepancies.

  85. seasider February 27, 2011 1:46 pm

Bottom half of the 1st, Wong thrown at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double. Replay showed his foot touched the bag before the tab. Cal asked Leahey what he thought of the call out after watching the replay. Leahey’s response, “I wasn’t close enough to make the call on that play”. Same inning, two down, Sweazy at 1st, Bennett is at the plate–Leahy said Bennett is thrown out trying to steal” 2nd base.

I like Jim, but what’s up wit dat!

  86. hawaiiansun February 27, 2011 2:01 pm

#84, good observation. hand-held times are subjective. I was wondering why the times were mediocre. Electronic times, except for wind conditions, are fair for everyone at any given time.

Fat piranha DPK notes that only piranhas bulla and joe have the bulk to match his own. He decides to hang out behind them and follow their blocks when the schedule drops, their massive rushing bodies would likely throw some of the smaller piranhas clear out of the water*

Syracuse goes undefeated in the Cathedral City Classic, defeating Utah, Hawaii, Fresno State, Nevada and Cal State Fullerton. Caira, Syracuse, is a Canadian National team pitcher.

Ashley Hagemann of Nebraska is now 11-1.

Na Wahine faced good pitching in this tournament and good pitching prevailed. With a little confidence on defense Na Wahine can minimize the number of unearned runs it has given up.

UH holds a 25-23 record against FSU. Na Wahine has loss every game since 2005-2006 season. That’s 11 straight losses, We owned FSU under Vince Goo, we need a surge to make things right and I hope tonight becomes a turning point for DTD team.

  93. Ralph February 27, 2011 3:09 pm

Hey Duffer when are you coming over for a wahine basketball game, season is almost over. Next week Thursday is senior night, last home game for the season.

  98. Derek February 27, 2011 5:01 pm

Rainbows achilles, errors and too many strikeouts. Pitching is actually pretty good against 2 top ranked teams. Obviouisly, we miss Greg Garcia and Kevin McDonald in the field. Tough luck on the double play to end the game, but it looked to me that the line drive was going straight to the second baseman which I thought would turn it into a double play anyway. Great stab by the pitcher.

  99. al February 27, 2011 5:25 pm

those are great numbers for alex and greg. they’ll get drafted a notch higher now.
salas could surprise and get a 2nd rounder, although 3-4 more likely.
green went from coveted free agent to 6th rounder.
kealoha’s clock is running…he needs to show up on pro day.

Interesting post and 1 which needs to be more extensively known about in my view. Your level of detail is beneficial and also the clarity of writing is excellent. I have bookmarked it for you so that others are going to be able to see what you’ll want to say.

  105. kev-1 February 27, 2011 6:50 pm

Like what I see from the basebows this season so far, minus all the errors. They should get that worked out though, and be pretty tough throughout the season. Why does everyone on the team look so skinny this year????? I know they are trying to adjust to the new bats and play more small ball, but man, they look like sticks out there. I think they need a visit from coach Heffernan.

  106. Bighilofan2 February 27, 2011 6:57 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos everywhere.

    been busy.

    Kawika 49.

talk to you tomorrow about 4/9. heard gonna have to compete with kids soccer on 4/9 at Keaau park.

reminder. at Kamehameha Keaau, no drinking no smoking campus, but can bring water. they’ll probably have the concession booth going beneath the bleachers.

hoping to talk to UHAD about what they’ll want to do for the players. will keep you all posted. laters…

  107. Lanaiboy February 27, 2011 7:12 pm

Came back from the Wahine basketball game. Looked like a real blowout in the 1st half. Fresno State drove and hit three’s at will. But the Wahine made it entertaining in the second half with a stirring come back that, unfortunately, fell short. Fresno State was just too uncanny in its shooting of the three’s in the final minutes and dominated the boards. Enjoyed the game and the effort by the Wahine though.

  108. Dan-O February 27, 2011 7:41 pm

What matters is how you FINISH the season, not how you start……

  109. Ralph February 27, 2011 8:05 pm

Na Wahine shot well in the second half, 63.6%, their achilles heal is the TO and not blocking out under FSU offensive board. FSU outscored UH 21 to 12 on TO and 33 to 1 on second chance points. Our one point must have been due to a foul on the rebound.

  110. Ralph February 27, 2011 8:08 pm

Good crowd, lots of kids with a lot more cheering. Need more promotions to bring the kids out, start them our early in their lives to be Na Wahine fans. JD and MMK were there, I hope they took note of all the kids there, we got to go something to bring them back.

  111. Ralph February 27, 2011 8:09 pm

Tickets issued 1794, we are way ahead of last years totals. Would be more if the A Houses used their tickets, and I didn’t see SJ and Myki.

  112. Innocent Observer February 27, 2011 8:12 pm

While the rainbow dancers were performing for some time, Jim Leahey, unaware that his mike was on, made a sarcastic remark that they hurry up and complete their routine. Apparently, he did not care about them dancing and delaying the progression of the ceremonies. This is very unprofessional, even if his mike was not on; he should support the program to honor the seniors planned by the athletic department. At least he should receive a letter of reprimand from KFVE and publicly apologize to the dancers.

  113. Ralph February 27, 2011 8:13 pm

Duffer Thursday is the last Na Wahine basketball home game, senior night. Remember the indelible impression coach Dana left on you during her Maui visit that you wanted to make something happen to help the wahine, well, one way is to get your butt in a seat and Whitey’s too. 🙂

  114. WahineSoftballFan February 27, 2011 8:26 pm

I am starting to question Dana’s ability to coach. No improvement on turnovers from the beginning of the season to now, not good. Also, alot of times players look disorganized, and confused, that should not be happening this late in the season.

  115. d1shima February 27, 2011 8:29 pm

Thanks for the explanation of what it was that Jim Leahey was apologizing for at sign-off last night.

  116. gmahoney February 27, 2011 8:34 pm

WSF, well of course, we expect nothing less from you.

  117. WahineSoftballFan February 27, 2011 8:39 pm

    gmahoney,

So you think it is good coaching to have that many turnovers continuacely throughout the season without any improvement? I didnot know turnovers by the bucket loads was a good thing. Maybe, the Women’s Connecticut, Stanford, or even Tennessee, head coaches should know that.

  118. gmahoney February 27, 2011 8:47 pm

Coaching is one thing, execution is another. Of course, turnovers by the bucket loads are not a good thing. I don’t claim to know alot, but I do know that our student athletes try their best, each and every time they take the court or the field. They appreciate their fans and are proud to represent our University and our State.

Coach Dana is a refreshing change from Ebola and I know as time goes on, our team will get better and better. Lighten up. Look for the good things in people, you will be a much happier man.

I, for one, am so proud of our student athletes. With limited budgets, facilities and fair weather fans, such as yourself, they still continue to amaze and thrill.

That’s all I have to say on the subject. I refuse to get into a p&%%ing match with you.

  119. WahineSoftballFan February 27, 2011 9:11 pm

    gmahoney,

I am not jumping on any wahine basketball player, it is not their fault they may not be getting good coaching. Coach Dana, is getting paid to coach, and what I am seeing is another Coach Nash. A coach that is nice, but really does not know how to coach. What the Wahine Basketball team needs is someone like Coach Gibs.

  120. Slugger February 27, 2011 9:25 pm

Hi, gmahoney. What you said…yup. Glad you are there to support the student-athletes. Have a great week.

Slugger & gmahoney – agree 100%. Think the Tsaikettes all think alike on this issue. 😀

BTW, you need to give Coach Dana a chance. They’ve improved from last year and coaches need at least 3 years to build a program. Ebolla left the program in shambles. JD gives coaches an annual review. If they don’t meet the goals in their contract, he holds them to it. Goals set include attendance, graduation rates, fundraising, etc…

    Re: coaching athletics at UH.

I have been asked to coach at UH because I will win all the games.

The football coach should be fired – he failed to win all his games last year.
Despite admiration for coach Gib, he should be tossed out – he failed to win all his games this year.
Coach Dana – failed to win all the games this year.
Coach Collen – same problem – failed to win all the games.
Ditto for Coaches for volleyball – both men and women

I may not have any experience and may not have played at any level, but I can be critical.

    ‘nuf said.

    Not just the Tsaikettes.

Any one who has been given the challenge of coming in and rebuilding a downtrodden team (whether civilian or military) can understand Coach Dana’s situation. I’ve been there and later was the one doing the assigning (hiring). You can actually tell in a short time whether that person will succeed or not.

No doubt in mind that Coach Dana has succeeded so far and will succeed further.

    Good night everyone.

Recapping UH sports for Sunday the 27th of February:

Men’s golf team finishes in 17th place in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club.

No. 43 men’s tennis team concluded its three-match road swing through Southern Cal with a 5-2 loss to No 65 UC Santa Barbara. Only bright spots for UH was at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, where Dennis Lajola and Leo Rosenberg won their match.

UH baseball ‘bows lose series to Texas Longhorns, 4-3. The ‘Bows fall to 3-4. Jesse Moore took the loss. Kolten Wong went 3 for 5, Jeffrey Van Doornum went 2 for 5, and Pi’ikea Kitamura hit the first round tripper for the ‘Bows this season, a two-run shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the 8th.

Wahine basketballs lose to Fresno State, 83-68. Kaneokoa, 16 points, 6 assists; Arbuckle had 16 points, 5 assists, Tinnin contributed 15 points, Jackson had 11 rebounds. The Wahine was out rebounded 41 to 32, had 15 TO versus FSU 9, and shot a woeful 12 of 25 on the FT line. Kuehu DNP.

No 5 wahine water polo finished fourth in the UC Irvine Invitational, losing two matches against No. 1 Stanford, 10-5 and No. 4 UCLA, 7-6.

  128. Aaron February 27, 2011 10:28 pm

what have you seen, x’s & o’s-wise that makes you think that Dana will get better with another year? I am neutral on the issue, but I’m curious to know what it is that people see in her that makes them want to give her another year? comparisons to Nash are fair comparisons – he was a good guy (and he earned his chance to be the guy), but there was a point where it became clear that he was in over his head.

  129. jm2375 February 27, 2011 10:34 pm

Aaron – it’s more about the players she’s bringing in plus she seems more of a disciplinarian than Nash. She’s keeping the team together like Gib is. Nash kept going after JC guys (with 2 to play 2). Never thought it was the best way to build a program. Kamilah and Sydney will have great careers at UH

  130. Ralph February 27, 2011 10:59 pm

DTD stated it clearly after she completed her first season, I need to recruit athletes! Basketball players who are athletic, with speed. She recognized her needs and her team’s weaknesses. She was a healer last season and didn’t make any excuses or threw anyone under the bus. But she recognizes that to compete she has to recruit more athletic players.

Enter Kalei Aldopho, 6’1, Molokai, multi sports talent in volleyball and basketball.

Malia Cravens, 5’11, Temecula Valley, multi sports talent in high jump and basketball.

Jasmine Ray, 5’7, San Bernardino, multi sports talent in volleyball, track, and basketball

Vicky Tagalicod, Hilo, transfer from USC, ESPN Rise (Under Armour) overrall rank: 20

  132. Ralph February 27, 2011 11:05 pm

Returning next season, RS freshman Shawna Lei Kuehu, Fr Kamilah Jackson and Sydney Haydel, players DTD will build on and the level of play will get better.

DTD didn’t have the bench she thought she had, lack of scoring off the bench hurt on the long road trips. Five road games in a row, and on the last trip, Na Wahine played 3 games on the road in 5 days.

  133. jm2375 February 27, 2011 11:34 pm

No school for Screecher #1 tomorrow. Fever, cough, etc. Hopefully she’ll be well enough to attend Friday’s vb game. We need that voice to help with the conversations. 😀 She barely made it through last night’s Sr. Night.

(And she better not get me sick. She’s been in my room all day watching tv!)

  134. Ralph February 27, 2011 11:43 pm

Bring the Screecher to the softball game at 6 pm before heading to the vb game, it will give her a chance to tune her voice.

  135. WahineSoftballFan February 27, 2011 11:56 pm

Well, lets see, this year they had a veteran point guard, in Keisha, and still had alot of turnovers. Next year no veteran point guard, I see the turnovers going up. At what point is enough, enough. Coach Nash had a good graduation rate, but is that good enough. A coach needs to win, more then anything else. If a coach does not have a winning team do you think people will go to the games just because her players graduate, I do not think so.

  136. jm2375 February 28, 2011 12:09 am

Nice comments from Augie Garrido about the way this BaseBow team battles back late in games.

They may not all be top-flight draft prospects but the Bow arms kept pace with those Longhorn A-A’s good enough to keep their team in striking distance…a good sign.

  148. RainbowCliff February 28, 2011 6:27 am

Tsaiko Nation, it is very TOUGH to win on the Division 1 level especially being
Hawaii because you are THOUSAND miles away. Majority of your top athletes
will go to major division 1 colleges that friends and family love ones don’t need
a cruise liner to get them there with fan support, boosters and television exposure
off the chart in supporting their student athletes. Firing your coaches is not always
the answer as in the case for Coach Dana. Bolla was a RIDICULOUS hire and brought
the program down with his militant attitude and how he demoralize his players. Women
sports are so competitive all around the mainland as many are staying home or the recruiting
budget like Conneticut or Tennessee can allow you to get the best players around the country.

The lady wahines wants to win and they feel worst then any one when they lose. There coach is a class act and she needs support. It takes time to rebuild and ATHLETES to win at any level. Turnovers are mental mistakes and happens when a team is young and trying their best to succeed. It is not intentional but takes practice and game experience to over come their short comings. I have talked to Coach Dana and pointed her in a direction where she can recruit from a pool of talented players in Texas AAU womens basketball. One of my
former player is the director of some outstanding H.S. girls basketball players and has asked
me personally on Hawaii getting on board. Coach Dana and her staff has followed through as building a pipeline of coaches and players takes time and you have to do it LEGALLY because of NCAA restrictions and infractions on recruiting.

Going into the Big West will give Coach Dana more exposure here in Southern California as not having her will put the program back where she got it “in shambles”. Get out support
her with fans in the seats and cheers for her players regardless if win or lose. Stop BASHING on the lady wahines as they are LADIES a far different athlete then our mens
and they hurt when they lose and PROUD when they win !

Coach Dana, Coolen and all the wahines are the “VERY BEST” !

Build them UP not tear them DOWN !

Good morning to all of you DEDICATED Hawaii fans !

Patiently waiting for the Warrior spring roster. March beckons already? Only 6 months until the Colorado Katonkas.

    Some questions to ponder:
    1) Who will ascend to the depth chart in the secondary?
    2) Will Jessie Moore be the starting short stop and be a starting pitcher too?
    3) When will Greg Salas and Alex Green get drafted?
    4) If there is no NFL in the fall, can the NCAA have some college football games on Sundays?

I don’t know where WSF is coming from. I don’t know his credentials, if any.
But to demand perfection is nice but stupid.

I get down when UH loses and I get high when we win. But I don’t think this is the time to get the fans coming out with pitchforks and torches demanding everyone (or anyone)get fired!

JD is doing a great job and he has the expertise. Dana is doing a fine job under the circumstances. I think Coolen is doing a fine job as well.

  157. hawaiiansun February 28, 2011 8:23 am

like every other program, you cant WISH it to succeed.
We saw Nash and we saw Arnold. Look at the bottomline, it doesnt lie.
Wahine basketball under Coach Takahara is going nowhere @ 20-38 in two seasons under her. The turnovers from game to game are not only tormenting but it has been consistent throughout the 58 games. A plague. Last night, wahine TOs were at 15 and most die-hard fans celebrated, barely noticing, wahine opponent Fresno State, had only 9.
The program is a $1m sinkhole at a time when Hawai’i tax payers can ill-afford to subsidize a local fantasy.
Just as Takahara was selected and given a chance over much more seasoned mainland candidates, she must also be evaluated with the same measuring stick, and not bc she is local cult-favorite.
JD gave Nash three and to be fair, all indications are that the program will agonize another year under Takahara. In this Union-worship State, selection and entitlements are more important than what one earns through talent, hard-work ethic and bottomline production.

hawaiiansun I’m not much into basketball, but I think we need to cut her a little slack, her first year after taking over the program has to be thrown out the window so to speak. So her first real year for recuiting was this past one so I would say she needs to get at least two more years of recuiting under her belt before we call for her head. IMHO you can’t compare the mess she took over to that of Coach Nash.

if you have ever coached or played at a higher level you would know that turnovers are a direct result of two things.

one, if the team members that you have cannot handle the ball at, say, d1 level then it is not going to go away any time soon.

two, if the team members that you have does not have the basketball iq that prevents or limits turnovers at the d1 level by the time that they arrive here, then it too is not going to go away any time soon.

    what to do…?

first, it is hard to coach ball handling skill development after they get here. therefore, you got to recruit to the level of play.

two, you can help improve one’s basketball iq, but, again you need to recruit those who get it.

if that fails then, bench em. but, if you look down your bench and there is no one better in sight, then, you better pass better.

riley and nash have not had a good pg for a long time and it showed when teams pressed.

the gibber was saddled with this same scenario too. miah has helped improved that are to a degree. but, gibber has adjusted his press breakers by employing more to be involved in bringing the ball up the court.

coaching can improve turnover numbers but, recruiting is the cure.

A wise man once told me ~ if can, can; those who no can anymore, teach; those who no can teach, criticize.

If you can, good on you. We always need those who can.

If you are good enough to teach, please fill out an application. We can always use good coaches who know how to balance graduating and winning.

As to criticism, there are two types – constructive and destructive.

Constructive criticism, observations and suggestions are always welcome. Feel free to conact UH Coaching staffs (thier e-mail addresses and phone numbers are on the UH Atheletic website). They are always looking for things they might have overlooked or not thought about. They are very approachable and welcoming. I know this for a fact.

Please keep destructive criticism to yourself. It does nothing to help the teams and only serves to make yourself feel better.

    GO WARRIORS AND WAHINE!!!

#157 hawaiiansun; I understand your frustration but changing coach Dana is not your answer. I have not seen the girls play but reading articles and of course comments from you well informend bloggers. Coach Dana needs TIME to re-build the program and recruit talent to Manoa. She has a plan and despite the won loss record has brought the program to some form of stability. She inherited a mess and trying her BEST dealing with so many obstacles with a sad budget for womens basketball. Before Dana came in you had verbal and
physical abuse to your players with a support fan base that was up in arms to the previous coaches behavior. I haven’t heard any of her players complain about her tactics, coaching philosophy or preperation before or after games. It is not easy being a Head Coach, especially in Hawaii when it is the only game in town and all eyes are upon you as “dam if you do and dam if you don’t. You are very well inform and from reading your comments you know the game and winning is the bottom line. Coach Takahara is talented and she works hard at her craft as PROUCTION is the word you use that is lacking in the final analysis.

PLAYERS are coming to Manoa and building a pipeline is essential to all of this. Contacts and using resources with fan support and people who are in the know to support Coach Takahara is critical to her and Hawaii success. I will do my part here in LA as I urge you and all Hawaii fans to keep supporting. I have contacted my connection in Texas and he has some OUTSTANDING middle and high school talent that are ATHLETIC and play defense like you never knew young girls can play this way. Getting Hawaii in the mix is happening as it takes time, money and convincing southern hospitality parents that ALOHA is the same.

Keep supporting as the Rainbow wahines will be turning that corner BUT they need Coach Dana to continue driving the lead seat as she is the RIGHT coach for this job !

It took a while to read the past blog topics. I came to many conclusions:

Mr. WahineSoftballFan thinks he knows facts but he does not. He thinks he knows what goes on in the minds of players and coaches but he does not. He thinks he knows what the solutions are but he does not. And finally, he thinks he is a fan but many here think he is not.

Great showing by Salas and Green.

    Mr. Διογένης ὁ Κυνικός,
    Clever Greek name.

  169. HawaiiMongoose February 28, 2011 9:15 am

The biggest difference I see between Coach Gib and Coach Dana is that Gib walked in with the recruiting connections in place to be able to immediately remove less talented or “problem” players from the UH roster and replace them with young but capable recruits. Three-quarters of his team are new to the program. In contrast, Dana had minimal recruiting connections (a factor that perhaps should have prevented her from being hired, but that’s water under the bridge) and had no choice but to rely on the players who were here when she arrived. Three-quarters of her team are Bolla holdovers and, although she’s working them hard and they’re trying their best, they just aren’t good enough basketball players to make the Wahine a winning team. Give Dana sufficient time to recruit better athletes and there’s a reasonable chance she can turn things around.

    LOL….and u determine which is which? funny-stuff.
Here we go again, the whole bit about “real fans vs others”.
    Same tired cult-logic.
Opinion that Takahara should be retained bc others are whinners or critics should apply rather than complain are diversions to substantive discussion and misses the point (intentionally).
Nice diversion, but still, I dont hear pro-takahara backers talking about the ABCs of Basketball. Only that they are haters of opinion that differs….

Im not against a Takahara-booster cult raising $1m to reimburse tax payers for this wahine program if they want to give her another 10 years at the helm. But, when it comes to tax payers monies–produce or shut-up!

    Al:ABSOULTELY !

RECRUITING is the key to all of this and Coach Dana is doing her best at it !

She needs support not the firing line. She has mines over here as I continue to
observe and watch out for her. Coach Takahara is a CLASS act and she sets
a GREAT example to her players and professional image being the women’s basketball
coach. Let’s ALL try to help her as having one of your own is SPECIAL in the driving
seat then not having one at all. She needs time and HELP as I am off in supporting that
    HELP to her !

Action speaks LOUDER then words !

Thank you to all the Hawaii coaches as they CONTINUE their very best for Hawaii athletics !

  173. Derek February 28, 2011 9:56 am

It is reasonable to give a coach about 3 years to move the program in the right direction. In the 3rd year for sure, the team has to show marked improvement. If not, a change may be warranted. It would be pretty obvious to known how the team is doing. To me, right now 2 glaring problems with the team. Speed and athletic ability. Because of the lack of speed the turnovers are magnifield. Athletic ability wise we don’t have a lot, I’m talking about the Wahine basketball team. We don’t have a go to person in the paint who can give us 17 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. We don’t have good ball handlers and the best one, Kanekoa, is a Senior. It all comes down to recruiting. Gib Arnold had the same problems when he got the job, but he has surely upgraded the talent level and that is very obvious to everyone. Coupled with coaching, that’s why the Warriors are having a winning season so far. The 4 recruits that Arnold got so far for next year are leapers and are very athletic. Recruiting, recruiting! That is the life blood of a successful program.

Cliff, always appreciate your contributions and like Kazz, you guyz are ahead of the curve in terms of being die-hard UH fans. No question. But loyalty to coach should not be substituted for what is beneficial to program and further, is not the issue here.
Coaching ability as well as capacity are at the heart of this matter.

Always enjoy what you have to add. Having said that, however, it doesnt matter what I say or you say, it matters only what JD is about to do. JMO, JD must do what he offered Bob Nash: Three years to bring the program around to being competitive, at least in conference. That is Donovan’s standard. Now, Gib Arnold is not in first place, but he has brought his team to the point of being competitive in the first year: despite attrition, injuries and unforeseeable adversities. Arnold has offered no excuses and stuck to his guns–ask Joston Thomas. Coach had a plan on the court and stuck with it….

The selection of Takahara, in the first instance, like Nash, was shroded in controversy.
First all the stuff about a woman getting a shot, than the local gurl twist, despite no college coaching experience.
After, two years, all I hear is give her the ‘more-time’ spin withot citing anything else of substance. To be honest, the reasons for keeping her by some, are laughable.
The wahine lack direction and in many instances–basic basketball fundamentals.
They continue to make the same mistakes. That is a coaching red flag–not player.
To ignore this “hometown” accusation would be arrogant and invite more program controversy.
Takahara, should be given another year. Agree. Beyond that, she is expendable if wahine BB does not improve substantially.

I am not going to play a critic, rather express my opinion of Hall Pass Full Movie. I went in the theater with quite low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised and had a great time throughout the movie. Full of funny scenes, one-liners, and at times smart remarks. Enjoyed the acting and the music score too. All in all I found this movie funnier than “The Hangover” by a mile. I did not find anything shocking or out of line since by now the audience should have accepted the “awkward” scenes and Farrelly Brothers’ humor as normal.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
