The Super Games competition continues tomorrow with relay races. Let’s see if Steele Jantz can become the next Bruce Jenner — and, by that, I mean a decathlete and not the future step-dad of a Kim K.

* * *

Each UH sports team has been asked to help reduce expenses. The men’s volleyball team has been doing more than its share. The Warriors cut out prematch meals, trimmed the roster and shortened road trips. For Thursday’s match against Long Beach State, the Warriors will leave Wednesday afternoon. That means they will not have a full practice in the Pyramid.

* * *

Did anyone else notice that the Pyramid has been renamed The Walter Pyramid? That’s because Dr. Mike and Arline Walter donated oodles of moolah. But that makes it sound like: 1) Walter Pyramid is somebody’s actual name, like Lucille Ball, or 2) That’s Walter’s tomb.  I woud have preferred Walter’s Treasures in the Pyramid. But what do I know? I was handed “The Warrior Beat” when the bosses rejected “Tsai’s Matters.”

Happy belated birthday to the beautiful and intelligent Tiffany Ing. You’ll remember her as the winner of the UH helmet at the blog’s second anniversary bash.

I think that it is crazy that Troy signed 41 players (the article says 40 but the Rivals list has 41) this year and so regularly goes over the 25 new scholarship limit.

Prior to gorging on 40 signatures this time around, the Trojans inked 33 players in 2008, 32 players in 2007 and 32 in 2005. Lose a few of those “extra” guys every year, and it seems like small potatoes.

    Aloha Ka Kou Tsaiko Ohana!

Big welcome aboard to SailorBlue this morning. We now have our official link to the USN! He told me he’d be lurking before jumping in with both feet. I thought that it was much better than him firing a shot over the bow of the SS Tsaiko as we sail into the Marina.

Both he and his lovely wife have attended a few UH games since being stationed here at Pearl. However, he was quick to remind me that when the Midshipmen roll in to town come November…his Navy colors will be hoisted high and tight! That’s perfectly ok with us, we know how to handle that Navy coach!

won’t be there for the blog so i’ll post my questions for coach nash here.

how many scholies (if any) will be available for next season?
is he actively recruiting any players that participated in the iolani classic?

    thanks.

  32. Kekoa February 10, 2009 7:27 am

Tiffany ~ Don’t forget to put a ‘Birthday’ shine on that helmet! BTW – how many times has Mike made you wear that thing while riding on the back of his bike?

    Hau’oli la hanau Ms Ing!

  33. Buffoman February 10, 2009 7:32 am

    Questions for coach Nash:

    1. Having gotten this far in the season, are you satisfied with the ability of your coaching staff to teach and motivate your players? I sort of know the “PC” answer to that question but any possibility of some brutal honesty if improvement is merited? With a record of just above .500, everything cannot be absolutely peachy.

    2. Are you going after a Tom Henderson type of guard or an A.C. Carter type of guard, Tom being more of a bigger, physical true point guard, or A.C. a quick 1 more comfortable (in college) being a 2?

    3. So, was Bruce O’Neil really seeing a Yao in his recommended Chinese player that you scholarshipped or was he doing someone a favor? So far it hasn’t quite worked out as Bruce stated.

  34. addahknowjoe February 10, 2009 7:36 am

Coach Nash, Stephen, or THE Princess,

Coach, I’m glad how things are turning around this season as we head to the WAC tourney. Big test this weekend against Nevada. I know this season is not over, but would you consider bringing back the Midnight/Twilight Ohana for next season? Seeing some of Rod and Brandon’s dunks this year, I would love to see them in a dunk contest to get us excited next year. Thanks, and lets beat Nevada on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll see Mark Fox cry and complain to the refs a lot and make his Valentine’s Day not so lovely.

    regarding #18

It was the ruling party at that time ( GOP) that got us into this mess. Their solution is to do the same thing (more tax breaks for the rich, along with more deregulation and free trade) that got us into this mess in the first place. Being on the brink of a depression is not fun. Being in one will be worse.

OldDiver ~ I believe the point #18 makes is that it’s like finding an ATM machine that is freely dispensing cash. Nancy Pelosi would stand there and milk it for what it’s worth and then try to punch it out for more because it was so easy and available. She throws her classic ‘hissy’ fit and…

Then she’d try to wring out even more thru legislation. Look at her record in that post. Then go back to the Reagan years when he turned the deficit he inherited from Carter and left a surplus when his time was expired.

The part where we look like hostages reading a list of demands, that’s scripted.

  84. chawan_cut February 10, 2009 11:01 am

    Kazz,
good point. i wanna see him cry and scream this saturday. he won’t get away with it at our place. my friends (NON-IMAGINARY) and i will give him an earful. if you’re gonna be at the game, you can sit by us. i’m sure the whole valentine’s day thing will have the crowd thinner than usual.
btw, i wonder where his all everything, guarantee NBA star Nick Fazekas is. hmmm…. cut by 3 teams and now playing in Europe. overrated from the start. a good college player, but he’d never cut it with the pros. wonder how good the next “superstar” is in Babbitt.
you’re also right too. usually reno was the WAC’s baby when it came to basketball and we’ve all seen how mr. Benson has taken care of his favorites. this year its utah st, and deservingly so, but the WAC is a weaker conference than it has been this year, so their record and ranking might be inflated (just as Boise’s was for football).

  87. LizKauai [Believer] February 10, 2009 11:04 am

ST- scripts are good- just pretend you are not “reading”. As for your ad libbing- THAT is what people will tune in to look for. Anyone can run a vanilla interview. It is your underbreath one-liners that will make your show SPECIAL – (good seats- you can always put them up on eBay if you can’t go).

I can see you and the Princess taking turns being Ed and Johnny. And sooner or later, a “Princess” reference will have to show up so people can’t see “Leila Wai” without thinking “Princess”.

    Yup- lotsa hook potentials.
    Break a leg!

    Chawan,

The tide is indeed turning for the basketball team and to see Nitoto play with so much emotion on Saturday should just be an inkling of what is to come for the second half of the season.

I hope Amis will be ready because Nevada is no Idaho. 9 out 10 times Nevada will beat Idaho.

Nevada had a better team in 2007 and we almost took it all the way until the OT loss.

    Vengance is sweet!!!

I shall see you on Saturday sir!

    ST, good neighbor:

Was there a Yuval Katz type volleyball player in the Israeli army that was coming to UH?

    What happened?

  94. Kekoa February 10, 2009 11:15 am

ST ~ Here are a few questions for Coach Nash. Feel free to pick one:

~ Coach, how is your son doing in Japan?…

~ What I mean is, is he adjusting to the living and playing conditions?

~ How are the Japanese fans receiving him as a player?

~ Is he having fun?…or is it harder than he thought it would be?

~ Is he keeping an eye out for young talent for you to evaluate?

Thanks for coming on the WB with Wai & Sai…and Thank you for your many years of devoted service to the University of Hawaii. First as a player, and now as a Coach. I wish you even bigger and better years ahead!

  97. A-House February 10, 2009 11:27 am

My last words on the stimulus “package”.

Many say that it would cost trillions of dollars if they give XXX$ to each federal tax filer/payer and it may be true.

The Feds have already given nearly $1 trillion to various “big, important” companies, but hundreds of thousands are still losing their jobs, thousands of homes are being fore clcosed, many business continue to lose income, etc. Why, because, we the general public, have limited or no funds to buy merchandise or repay loans.

That’s why the idea of “giving”, yes giving $$$ to individuals will help to turn around this mess.

    as al says, nuff said.

PS. d1, thanks for your wise counsel.

  98. Stephen Tsai February 10, 2009 11:27 am

Of course, this blog still will be free.

IMO, the basis of this economic downturn is the price of consumer goods increased way faster than pay. Now the private and government sectors are implementing plans to reduce pay, furlough, and layoff workers which defeats the purpose because there will be less spending…oops, just like kekoa, wrong blog. Sorry

  113. Jason February 10, 2009 12:24 pm

First 1,000-1,200 students? I’d be happy getting 100-120 to start!

One of the problem with the student fees, IMO, is the leadership change over the past few years with ASUH, the student gov’t. As the leadership has transitioned, the priority level of the student fees issue has wavered. Not to mention, some people balk at increasing fees even $20, let alone $50-$100, where I would recommend.

I heard a couple of girls on the bus talking about the U-Pass proposal. One of them is with the grad student gov’t, and she was telling her friend that on the Mainland, her old school charged a universal fee for global bus passes, and that it was good; but that here, people are complaining about the proposed $20 charge. That’s another example of how the student body is cheap and not very visionary. It sounds like the U-Pass might get through, though.

    Good show.

My only criticism is that last week there was a lot of dead air time since continuity between the video playing and the talents was poor. This week, Leila and ST both got cut off in mid-sentence by canned stuff. Maybe OK to have ST talk too long and get cut off by the closing credits 🙂 but cutting of Leila or ST for a commercial is irritating.

If there is truly a director for this, have him/her use fingers to count down the time to switch points between live and canned stuff.

Thanks for the feedback on the show, folks! We’re doing our best to improve each week. Keep the input coming!

Steve, we are counting the talent in, however, timing of when each peice cuts in and out can be effected by connection latency and the way our live streaming software syncs viewers. We’re working on timing and will do our best to improve.

How was audio this week? We tried to level the live mics to the broadcast audio levels of our video assets and intro/credit bumpers. Let us know if you’d like a small bump on the live show audio.

Looking forward to next week’s show! Tell your friends and family to tune in! http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/thewarriorbeat .

    John

homey……a little birdie whispered that two guys are on the bubble for next year. no names. thus, the basis for my question.

it is my belief that we will need 2-3 guards who can shoot from the perimeter and a quick pg. i like what nitoto did the past two games, but, i am still not convinced that he is a pg at this level. thompson is too slow afoot and doesn’t really have an outside touch.

and numbers wise we need at least one or two bigs who can contribute in two years.

Kelli, check out the UA Revernant running shoes at Sports Authority. They will have different types depending on how u land on ur feet when u run. Kinda pricey tho… I have UA evades and powers for gym use.

They’re ok for what they are but if u are a serious runner I would stick with New Balance.

JOHN- I haven’t seen the beginning of the video yet- just the Nash interview. BUT I notice a reference “Washington Redskins’ tight end Richard Cooley talking about teammate and ex-Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan. ”

The Redskins’ TE is CHRIS Cooley, not Richard.

Nice summary of the nonconference schedules for Pac-10 teams for the 2009 season. Most of the schedules look good, but Arizona and Arizona State really seem to be taking it easy compared to the other teams in their conference.

    Arizona’s first 2 nonconference games:
    Central Michigan
    Northern Arizona

Arizona State’s first 2 nonconference games:
    Idaho State
    Louisiana-Monroe

Oregon facing *both* BSU and Utah really shows that they aren’t afraid to face the top-tier of non-BCS conference teams. That shows they wouldn’t be afraid to play UH…I’d love for UH to schedule a home-and-home with them.

  211. Garret February 10, 2009 3:24 pm

Salaries for coordinators are getting so crazy that Fresno State has given up in their search for offensive and defensive coordinators and instead they will promote from within their staff.

Provided the hints Fresno State football coach Pat Hill has dropped about his assistant coach search, it would seem Jeff Grady and Tim Skipper are great candidates to become the new offensive and defensive coordinators.

“Salaries for assistant coaches are astronomical,” Hill said recently. “Right now, in this financial market, you have to go after younger coaches. I’ve gone with older, established, out-of-work coaches and we lose them very, very quickly.

“… I want young coaches who want to be at Fresno State and be the best they can possibly be.”

  214. Garret February 10, 2009 3:27 pm

So, Fresno State could have offensive and defensive coordinators who are just 29 and 30 years old! That would be a *slight* contrast to the ages of UH’s coaching staff.

    ***Off-topic***

    Homey,

    RE: Storm

That was me rushing. I turned off the spell check and SureType thing to go faster. Hard fo text in pidgin with those features on.

BTW.. I have no clue what the “glitches” are that people complained about.

There is no “lag” with the storm from the portrait view to landscape view and it’s just as responsive while downloading a page. The videos are clear, I even tried out VZW Navigator from work to home and it’s accurate to the spot. The touchscreen is not even an issue for me, I just have to get used to the blue glow that highlights the letters/symbols you intend to type before you actually register your choice by actually clicking the screen.

My only gripe is the lack of a battery level indicator when completely powering off the handset and then charging it. There is only an LED light that stays steady when the phone is completely charged. Also, compared to the iPhone the applications already on it are not as extensive. There is the VZW Navigator, MySpace, Flickr, Facebook, Word, Excel, and a few others.

Battery life is pretty good and there is a feature on there to set your storm to power off and power on at a time and day you choose to conserve the battery. My last gripe is how BlackBerry phones are not compatible with Verizon’s “Back Up Assistant” feature. It’s an online account with VZW that automatically holds all your phone #s for you. So in case you lose your phone and need to find a number, you can just log online. So I had to download the BlackBerry software from a CD they gave me and then transport all of my contacts to my desktop. Unfortunately the information is NOT in a “read-able” encription so the only way to retrieve it is through another blackberry device.

Also, I haven’t messed with the Word or Excel application on it yet, but I will get to it eventually.

Overall, I like it. My brother has the iPhone and he’s a techie that likes to find anything to complain about and he played around with my Storm and said the negative reviews by some on-line are not fair. Of course I bought my phone AFTER the latest firmware update so maybe that’s why I haven’t encountered the problems people complained about.

Nah it’s just a pair of handles that are attached to a U-shaped support system that allows you to hang it from the top of your door frame. Pretty much you will be doing pull-ups within the confines of your doorspace.

I expected Coach Nash to recruit some brothas from the Bronx, Chi Town, South Central, Florida, Atlanta, and South Carolina. We need more brothas playing on the team.

The Fab Five was made up of brothas. This is why they were so great. This is the formula Nash must use if he expects to be successful.

Coach, when are you gonna go back to your old neighborhood to recruit?

Interesting story about Gilroy H.S.(Cal.) QB Jamie Jensen who passed for 7,000 yards during the last two seasons but still has no offers from D1 colleges. There are a few schools still looking at him but he may have to go the J.C. route like Jeremiah Masoli did. One of the schools that is still talking to him is San Jose State. Article says that he is a very good passer, has great vision, leadership, and presence, but has a funky release.

Give me results and a funky release any day over poor results but a sweet loooking release. Got a feeling that a few schools will feel sorry in a few years that they didn’t pick this kid up.

alex green is like a wibert haslip, big, tough, quick burst off the line, 10 – 15 yards after knocking over a few lb’s.

chizzy is a shorter but a stronger version of gary allen. shake n bake, make you miss runner with some jets for the afterburn.

john lister is big “travis sims” type back, north and south, take no prisoners type of guy who just loves to hit the defense.

perhaps the latter will greyshirt, pick up 10-15 lbs, could even be a special teams special guy or convert to lb’er.

No introductions though. 🙁 Peaches, who seldom misses anything, asked me who she was afterwards. She was sitting within 3 feet of her and didn’t know… no, chawan_cut, not her. The Tsai-ko-sized one homey and I are talking about sat in the same section as Peaches.

    Re UFC 94 payouts

UFC has confirmed about 1.3 million buys for the PPV at say $45 each, that comes out to $58 mil, just in PPV. Not sure about the gate receipts.

Initial word was that BJ Penn was paid only $125,000 but he does get shares of the PPV money as being part of the main event. His payout is actually close to a million. Not too bad but considering what Dana White and his crew made, it is still not enough.

WarriorMojo: Ok, that was a little gross. I only go to the gym twice a week for a reason. If I go more than once, guarantee I’m wearing shorts, shirt and shoes. And yes, they’re all CLEAN!!! Oh yeah, must not forget to bring a towel, too. Bumbai you get kicked out, I think.

Stretch, unfortunately we did not. I got to sing a couple songs (thanks D1!) before she arrived, but there was a list of 30 to 40 songs once things got rolling. That’s the one bad thing about having such a big event. But, it’s all good. Much thanks to you, SteveM, D1, etc. for planning and organizing everything.

WarriorMojo –that’s a good point. That’s why the BIG Karaoke Calls are similar to tailgates with singing. Fun though. Maybe if we had more frequent “intermediate size” ones we can spread things out better for the Tsingers. Then we have the place where we have a semi-reserved private room regularly… 🙂

Texas really got the recruiting season moved up much earlier than before, even since Mack Brown took over 10 years ago. I remember how Texas A&M used to have little or no commits until the final weekend, and they would bring in all their recruits for official visits on that final weekend and end up with awesome recruiting classes. Mack Brown ended that strategy by getting the players to commit early…and Texas A&M has never recovered. Now everyone, including UH, makes offers extremely early.

Texas was basically done recruiting last year in June. With their second Junior day later this month, they could be nearly done recruiting in February this year! Making their offers scarce commodities is a great marketing strategy–recruits feel the need to commit early or someone else will get the offer and they will lose out on their chance.

With the dust barely settled from last Wednesday’s national signing day, Texas already has 10 oral commitments for 2010 that would be the envy of most programs.

The early haul is the result of Texas’ junior day last weekend, in which an elite group of seniors-to-be were invited to Austin.

Texas coach Mack Brown introduced the concept of early commitments to the state when he arrived at UT more than a decade ago. Now it’s common for recruits to commit the summer before their senior seasons.

Burton said 19 of the 20 recruits Texas signed last week committed back in June. The large number of February commitments is unprecedented.

I personally think that it is horrible that a single mother would get $490 in food stamps every month and get disability payments on 3 of her 6 kids…and decide to pay $10k or so for an in-vitro procedure which resulted in her having 8 more kids! She was already on food stamps with 6 kids and now has 14 kids?

I wrote somewhere else, and basically I wanted to get this off my chest here, too. In reference of this sport’s columnists bemoaning about how UH should keep the local talent home it just rubbed me the wrong way. He’s probably right. But to me me it speaks badly of the ones (recruits) we got this year. And I don’t think so. I think we did great this year.

Accentuate the positives, but no the columnist wants to write and say we…… “need to keep the local talent home”. It’s almost like inferring that the local recruits we got this year are a bunch of slugs. And that’s the furthest from the truth. The kids recruited in the last couple of years are going to be great. I think so. The coaches think so. And a lot of fans think so.

The UH football program, presently, has a nice wind at it’s back. And things are sailing along, nicely.

In regards to recruiting and looking off in the horizon, or future, the UH football program made huge advances with this class.

Here’s a list of local high school recruits that are coming to the Warriors.
Check the other schools, mostly PAC-10, that UH competed with in recruitment.
How I see it, UH did a creditable job. As another poster mentioned, the super athlete, or anomaly, has a mind of his own, that he deservingly wants to play on the biggest stage. This shouldn’t be a slight on UH. Or, further, induce a columnist into saying that “we need to get more of the top local players.” Patience. Patience. Patience.

Stutzmann (Washington State,Washington,Oregon State, Michigan State, Colorado)
    Ma’afala (California, Washington)
    Shutter (New Mexico)
    Brackenridge (Idaho, Wyoming)
    Aulola Tonga (UCLA, BYU)
    Makainai
    Loeffler
    Alo
    Malepeai
Lopati (Washington, Oregon State, Oregon, Colorado, California, Baylor)

There’s a cache of high school talent in the islands.

And we’re seeing that the speed and quickness clinics, combines, camps are all tools for the kids to get better . And the UH coach’s interests in the kids, the kid’s interest in the UH and the UH coaches fostering bonds with recruit’s parents, community and the high school coaches are the impetus that will quickly see more of the local kids gravitating to UH.

The residual of all this interests as a result is so beneficial to the kids. For all of all this motivation (camps, combines, etc) and mentoring (speeches telling the kids to do their school work) by the UH coaches is making the kids opening their eyes and evoking their interests in football. And this is the very important first step in recruitment. Coach Mack sees the picture. (I didn’t say this, but I should have–“But the columnist doesn’t).

  338. wafan February 11, 2009 4:54 am

I wonder why the social services continue to give the mother of the 14 kids money. Were did she get the 10k for the fertility treatment? What doctor would do this to a person who cannot even support herself?

Is she trying to break some kind of sick world record?

Is the father paying any child support for the first six kids? And now he has to pay for 14? I certainly feel sorry for her parents!

If the economy was in better shape would we view this story in a more positive light?

    Hmmmmmm.

  339. Garret February 11, 2009 6:09 am

    wafan,

I read that she got an anonymous sperm donor for her latest birth (the 8 kids)…no father to pay child support because nobody knows who the sperm donor is.

The father of the mother of 14 is going to Iraq to work as a contractor because he can make a lot more money that way and help support his grandchildren. The mother of the mother of 14 is upset with the doctor that gave her fertility treatments–the doctor that gave the fertility treatments for the woman’s first 6 kids refused.

The mother of 14 apparently collected $100k or so in a disability claim, which is how she said that she could afford fertility treatments. Of course, it does bring to mind the question of why she is so dependent on food stamps and government payments for her kids when she is sitting on so much cash.

Friends of mine had 5 kids under 5 (2 sets of twins and a single) and it took both parents at home full time to care for them properly and not go crazy. And that was in simpler times in the 70s.
