UH seeks spring scrimmage on Maui

 The Warriors are exploring the possibility of staging a football scrimmage and autograph session at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium in April, athletic director Jim Donovan said.
The event would be part of the Warriors’ spring practice. They still would play the Green-White game at Aloha Stadium.
“We’re hopeful it’ll all come together,” said Donovan, adding the event is still  in the proposal stage.
But Donovan said it was important for “Hawai‘i’s team” to connect with fans throughout the state. Maui has the second-most pay-per-view customers of UH sports.
Donovan said Teri Chang, assistant athletic director for facilities and operations, is in charge of coordinating the event. Chang was raised on Maui. Donovan said Chang coordinated the UH-Montana game on Maui several years ago and “is a natural fit to coordinate this.”

Ryan Mouton said he “popped” his left hamstring today while running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
He suffered the injury at about the 30-yard mark, and limped the rest of the way. He was credited with an “unofficial” time of 4.48 seconds, said his agent Kenny Zuckerman.
Mouton said he does not believe he tore the hamstring. He will be evaluated in Honolulu this week. He said he expects to run the 40  at the April 2 Pro Day in Carson, Calif.
Mouton, who is listed at 5 feet 9 and 187 pounds, had a vertical jump of 39 1/2 inchces and a broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches.

    Mouton initially suffered the hamstring injury during the East-West Shrine Game. But these things never really go away. At least he hurt it early, giving him enough time before Pro Day. The most important thing is he had a good vertical. That’s key for a 5-9 corner.

    here’s one for jd……….

    we all know that you walked in to the jungle carrying but a toothpick in hand. mahalo herman. i admire your methodical attack at the problems that this athletics business has surfaced before you. i am sure that you were aware of these roadblocks on the way to success. thanks for towing the line.

    my first question is, when is the women’s basketball issue going to be resolved, one way or the other? i realize that due to privacy acts as well as fear of litigious consequences you and the university must walk softly, but, this has been going on too long now.

    secondly, in these tough economic times that our entire state and nation are faced with, what priorities have you set or rather how do you set the pecking order of business?

    finally, recently the wac commissioner voiced his approval of the current bcs system, whereas, the mwc voted or aired their opinion of the current need to change the bcs system. what is your take on the bcs situation? do you envision, down the road, the creation of a new bcs potential conference with the top wac, mwc, and possibly conference usa schools? (which would include hawaii of course.)

    thanks, jim for doing all the right things!

  18. LizKauai [Believer] February 24, 2009 10:47 am

    To JIM DONOVAN:
    1. Do you envision a win-win situation that involves Aloha Stadium, UH, the State of Hawaii and the NFL?

    2. Is there anything you can share with us about the possibilities of looking westward to enlarge opportunities for the UH Athletic Department’s strategic location between the continental US, Asia and Australasia?

    Mahalo for all that you are doing and how you are doing it!

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid February 24, 2009 10:50 am

  30. BowsForever February 24, 2009 11:40 am

    Luckily, none of the corners this Combine had impressive 40s…at all, if the current list is any indication. I remember hearing Coach Miano on the radio saying how Ryan fares on the 40s is directly related to his draft round (IIRC, he said a 4.4-ish time is a 4th or so round pick). And if you take the pessimist’s viewpoint and adjust a couple rounds lower for this seeming institutional bias many NFL teams have against Hawaii (Colt Brennan 6th round utter BS cough cough, I know it’s a QB/system thing but still)…running a good 40 will be key for Pro Day.

  31. sportsbow February 24, 2009 11:42 am

    ST.

    Did RB,Jack Sula qualify?

    According to JCfootball.com, a poster name RABIDBULL said that he heard that he has qualified and is on his way to Hawaii. (RABIDBULL is a coach for one of the JC schools.)
    LINK: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=87&f=2909&t=3965941

    Can you verify if this is true?

  32. BowsForever February 24, 2009 11:43 am

    Oh, and on the subject of cornerbacks and height, I might as well ask. Elite-level, high-jumping cornerback with great vertical but 5′ 9″ vs. a guy like Larry Fitzgerald. Does the corner lose most of the time? Just wondering if not having height as a corner closes off certain opportunities in the NFL?

  33. homey ℞ February 24, 2009 11:54 am

    I hope Sula is on the way to Hawaii and will join the team in summer workouts and fall camp.

  34. homey ℞ February 24, 2009 11:56 am

    al noted that the Steelers have a bunch of 5’9″ DB’s and Polamalu is 5’10”. They seem to be doing ok.

  35. Garret February 24, 2009 12:00 pm

    It is too bad that Ryan’s hamstring was injured because he was doing very well until then. I agree with Jason that his other measurables (vertical jump, broad jump) were good, so if his 40 time had been good he could have moved up a lot in the draft. Hopefully he’ll be healed up by the Pro Day.

  36. mauiwarrior February 24, 2009 12:02 pm

    DPK, howzit going?

    Kekoa, Nice to meet you…..

  37. BowsForever February 24, 2009 12:02 pm

    Were we to assume that Zuckerman’s 40 “estimate” is more or less accurate, 4.48 would place Ryan 2nd in Combine performances (assuming also the NFL’s Combine performance list is complete).

  38. BowsForever February 24, 2009 12:03 pm

    Oh, link is here:

    http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers

  39. Garret February 24, 2009 12:05 pm

    Al,

    The WAC didn’t just voice support for the BCS, the WAC signed the BCS agreement that goes all the way to 2014. The WAC approving the BCS deal means that the WAC Presidents (including UH’s President) decided to support the BCS. I didn’t realize that the WAC approved the BCS agreement until this article came out.

    But the theory that consistency gets a conference into the BCS is lost on the nine Mountain West presidents, who strongly suggested that Thompson present the conference’s case to Washington. These are also the same presidents that haven’t agreed to sign the BCS agreement with ESPN. The Mountain West is the only conference that hasn’t signed.

  40. Garret February 24, 2009 12:08 pm

    Bowsforever,

    I’m not sure how much I trust a player’s agent when he says an “unofficial” time.

    Ryan is extremely fast, so hopefully he’ll be healthy at the Pro Day and will show what he can do.

  41. Garret February 24, 2009 12:09 pm

    This combine report unfortunately listed David Veikune among the losers at DE. Hopefully in this case the excellent measurables outweigh this person’s subjective opinion of Veikune’s drills:

    David Veikune, Hawaii – Possesses good size and great measureables including good 40 and bench press but looked very stiff in drills. Really struggles to change directions.

  42. Garret February 24, 2009 12:11 pm

    We’ve discussed “package deals” in recruiting before…I cannot believe that Memphis’ AD actually went on ESPN and said that they were okay.

    Cool feature on ESPN’s Outside the Lines last weekend about package deals in recruiting. John Wall, the top high school hoops prospect in the Class of 2009, has Baylor (?) listed among his final schools. Why? Because Baylor added his former AAU coach to its coaching staff. This is how Michael Beasley ended up at K-State, it might be why Mario Chalmers went to Kansas, why Tyreke Evans is at Memphis (the Memphis AD, amazingly, says on camera that package deals are “OK”), and so on.

  43. BowsForever February 24, 2009 12:16 pm

    Garret – that’s why I used quotes for Zuckerman. We all know what Mouton can do, just like Veikune (who probably is higher up on the draft board right now), he just needs his chance to prove himself.

  44. Kekoa (iPhone) February 24, 2009 12:21 pm

    MauiWarrior ~ The pleasure is all mine. Will you be hooking up with the two most notable Tsaiko’s on the Valley Isle?…Duffer & Whitey.

    They are famous for being our resident tour directors whenever we venture over to the ‘dark’ side. You should plan for a cc with them. Then you will know the power they wield as the movers ‘n shakers of the Republic of Maui.

  45. Garret February 24, 2009 12:27 pm

    BowsForever,

    I agree with everything you said in #43. I think that Veikune is probably a 2nd round pick right now, and Mouton is below a 2nd round grade.

  46. Jason February 24, 2009 12:35 pm

    I’ve got Veikune in the 2nd-4th range, I think he goes in the 3rd. Ingram I have in the 6th-FA range, I think he goes in the 7th. Mouton I have in the 6th-FA; if the draft were today, I think he’s a FA. But he still has time to move up if he gets healthy and blows them away at Pro Day. He has the potential to go anywhere, it’s just that people haven’t seen him much because of the position changes and whatnot.

  47. Garret February 24, 2009 12:47 pm

    Jason,

    I think that Veikune’s measurables make a 2nd round selection most likely now, though he could drop to the 3rd round based on UH’s Pro Day and the Pro Day performances of other DEs and LBs.

    I agree with your assessment of Mouton now, but if he had a good 40 time at the combine I think he could have been rated a 6th round pick now. Hopefully he’s healthy and runs a fast time at the Pro Day, as that will be the difference between a 6th round pick and an undrafted FA. If Mouton runs faster than I think he will, he could move up even more…but it is hard to improve the 40 time when training is cut due to the injury.

    I think it would be better for Ingram is he’s not drafted instead of taken in the 7th round. He could pick a team that needs him (like Bess) instead go to a team that is taking him to compete with a player they already have (like Nate). Plus, undrafted free agents sign 2-year deals instead of 3+ year deals, so if he earns his spot he’ll make more money in the long run.

  48. Garret February 24, 2009 12:49 pm

  50. Rabidfanman February 24, 2009 12:57 pm

    Question for JD:

    In the last few years, I’ve had an increasing feeling of being ‘nickeled and dimed’ attending the football games – from 4.75 slices of pizza and 7.50 cups of beer to being forced to park farther and farther away. This past football season I decided to not renew my tickets. Basically I can watch the game live at one of the local bars, have a few beers and pupu’s for much cheaper than attending the games themselves. Is there a sense out there other than mine that, given the economy, the games are getting away from the average fan, and if so, what can be done aside from sitting in the yellow north end zone? Mahalo

  51. Ralph February 24, 2009 1:26 pm

    Ferd and Mike report on Bolla is interesting….lots of hard work to locate former UNLV players to comment about prior incidents at UNLV…if true as written, why did we hire Bolla in the first place…improper vetting or a lazy search committee filled with political appointees who have no vested interest in women basketball…

  61. Ralph February 24, 2009 2:08 pm

    UH takes to long to do anything-hiring people, firing people. Lots of foot dragging collecting their pay whether they work or not, just show up and punch the time clock. no one wants to take charge and make the tough call…if you ask the ASUH if it is okay to raise tuition and student fees, my guess they would collectively say no..if you were to ask the taxpayer who has no ties to UH as a student or kids attending UH if you want taxpayers money to support UH to keep tuition low the answer would probably be no, the students need to pay a more equitable share. So someone has to stand tall and make a stand, we need revenue, so tuition must goe up and students need to support the UH programs with a higher student fee assessment…

    Two BIG pancakes with eggs, sausage, and bacon… and I mean BBBBBIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGG. Freakin’ thing takes up the whole plate and for BCD regulars you know what size their plates are!

    Ralph – I can’t be that much bad luck. I wuz there when they won the NCAAs. 🙂

    Good luck to the Jr Bows girls bb team as they compete in the DII State Tournament.

    ST,

    How’s UH chances without Steven Hunt against Stanford this weekend?

  94. jm2375 February 24, 2009 8:03 pm

    Kekoa – I ate da whoooole thing. I did make a donation ($).

    Kazz – I almost had pancakes when we went to BCD last weekend, but the turkey/cranberry sandwich was calling me. Hubby had da pancake sandwich and then couldn’t move for the rest of the day.

    but, ummm, were the questions posted on this blog earlier in the day for jd, er, um, ignored or just a forgotten memory?

  96. jm2375 February 24, 2009 8:13 pm

    Kazz – you really need to come over to the Windward side and have Boots and Kimos pancakes with mac nut sauce. Brok da mout’!

    jm2375 ~ Let’s review.

    1 – Hubby lumbers after white ball. (result of sawing lumber…)

    2 – Hubby eats pancake sandwich and cannot move.

    3 – Hubby goes home and fires up chain saw.

    4 – You fix dinner – finish the day’s wash. Check kid’s homework.

    5 – Hubby stuffs himself once again, and goes into another trance.

    6 – Not too much later, logs are getting sawed.

    7 – Time for bed.

    8 – Lights out.

    The end of a typical 2375 day. Did I miss anything?

    Good idea!
    I wonder if she charged less… hmmm.
    It was yummy and juuuust right.

  128. brew808 February 24, 2009 9:41 pm

    Hey, there’s still time for Kauai to put in a bid for the Spring Scrimmage game… You have to come up with a more attractive package than Maui Tasty Crust pancakes, up-country p-sausage, Maui potato chips, and guri-guri! 😆

  129. Garret February 24, 2009 9:47 pm

    Having the Warriors go to Maui would be great! It would help increase the fan base and give Warrior fans on Maui a chance to see them in person. The event would hopefully make money for the Athletic Department and PPV forms and merchandise sales should be available at the event.

  130. brew808 February 24, 2009 9:49 pm

    We also enjoyed the free subs at Quiznos today for lunch. Since I made breakfast for the kids, Lori really enjoyed the light cooking day!

  132. Garret February 24, 2009 9:51 pm

    Junior Day has become so popular, sophomores are even crashing the party.

  195. Ralph February 24, 2009 11:57 pm

    With all the red ink anticipated at UH, JD is considering spending a lot of money staging a practice and scrimmage on Maui. I hope Hawaiian Air is footing the airfare. Team fly in the morning, scrimmage, fly back to Oahu the same day that evening…

  196. Ralph February 25, 2009 12:00 am

    amateurish! maybe that is why she got caught shoplifting…

  197. al ™ February 25, 2009 12:02 am

    just as i suspected…
    authentic ralph lauren women’s apparel run about $300 to $400 bucks per shirt. unless she prefers men’s shirts which run about $145.

    unless, ralph is buying his from the korean lady who sells those knock off shirts.

  198. Rob25 February 25, 2009 12:06 am

    Thanks to Jason and a little bit from Ryan Mouton and mauiwarrior…I actually think that I can move on in my football education.

    Maybe Jason should hold a Tsaikette clinic…if he can get some tapes from Coach Mac. 😯

    I need game tapes to fully visualize, 4-3, 3-4, Okie, nickel, dime and quarter packages. Jason even explained stunts to me. What an education I could get from certain Tsaikos…umm Pride, JD, etc!

    Offensive sets are more numerous…got to learn what players have to read to decide on how they run their routes. My head is going to spin! 🙄

    GO WARRIORS!!

    She stole Polo shirts?
    Was she shoplifting 1985?

  202. Ralph February 25, 2009 12:13 am

    she stole from Ralph Lauren shop in Waikiki….may have been other items but polos are most common and least bulky to haul out….Jeans, jackets, etc are too bulky to fold and walk out unless she had a very large bag….

  203. Ralph February 25, 2009 12:14 am

    at least she has expensive taste, the UH fb players took a dive for cheap ear rings….

  204. al ™ February 25, 2009 12:26 am

    what?

  205. Kekoa (iPhone) February 25, 2009 1:58 am

    Polo shirts are now dancing in her head. Sad that a materialistic misappropriation will kill her college experience.

    The ‘race’ card will not be in her favor, as she makes it more difficult for Black women to shake the profile. The jury will see color before they see student athlete.

    Maybe JD can load the SF with the buses and fb equipment trucks it’ll take to get the UH players over to Maui at a substantial discount.

    If the Tsaiko’s chartered a bus to take 45 Tsaiko’s over on the SF, we could have one hell of a SF~Tailgate over and back!

    Check it out:

    1. First we park our cars over at UH garage and board our bus. Driver takes us to SF where we get on board while he parks the bus on the boat. Those Tsaiko’s who would like to drive their own cars to Maui can opt to do so on their own and meet us on board the SF. We all ride over together!

    2. Once inside, they serve delicious snacks and meals with all beverages, including the adult variety. Shop, explore the ship, play computer or arcade games…maybe just relax and snooze!

    3. Whoo Hoo!…Talk about plush party room!

    4. Then we mix and mingle with the players and coaches. Get mug shots, autographs, whatevers. (LizK practices National Anthem).

    5. Once we arrive on Maui, we board our buses (cars) and head over to the stadium and enjoy a small kine T-gate with Duffer & Whitey cause remember we can have our coolers and grills stashed in the baggage bins of da bus!

    6. Get inside and cheer for the Green & White, and hope they all don’t get black and blue! (LizK cranks up the volume on her National Anthem)

    7. After game, go back outside and resume Tsaiko T-gate until SF boarding time.

    8. Resume Party boat atmoshpere, or just relax and snooze the way home in kick-back comfort!

    9. Great publicity for the UH and the SF. I’ll bet it would sell out the ship, and they’d have to send the back up (if they have it by then!) Imagine the press coverage, with our own WB host in the Captain’s chair! The Wai & Tsai show over the bounding main with a huge audience!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Doodle-di-doodle-ute..doodle-di-doodle-ute..doodle-di-doodle-ute
    KEKOA! EH KEKOA! WAKE UP! Gunn-funnit!…you dreamin’ again. Get off da easy chay-yah, turn da TV off and go to bed!
    OK, OK…sheesh Diana, was one winnah of one dream!
    A happy post-pancake morning to everyone!
  208. wafan February 25, 2009 4:10 am
    The IHOP pancakes were good out here! The place was packed with teachers and a lot of my kids — I told them about it and sold the idea to the kids as an easy way to have a “free” dinner and help the kids who need help.
    If you can find Snoqualmie Falls Pancake mix in Daiei/Don Quijote/Holiday Mart try it! Easy to make, fluffy and good taste. For those of us who are getting up in life experiences you only add water. A bit spendy but worth it.
    And, if you are coming up for the WSU game and want a great place to stay (lots of kala!) check out the Snoqualmie Falls. The hotel there overlooks the falls and has some great food. Close to the Snoqualmie casino, too. Brand new!
    Staff meeting for half the day. Ugh. I would rather cheer for the UW than sit through another round of meetings for Every Child Left Behind.
    Worst part is having to deal with the reality of an over $8 billion state shortfall that will result in the loss of over 2000 Washington teachers, and $9 million district shortfall in the district. So much for fieldtrips, supply and equipment money, and what used to be our 1.5% pay raise.
  218. whitey February 25, 2009 7:01 am
    Good morning Tsaikos, bhf2, stretch, jm, wafan. Wow, scrimmage on Maui?? i like this guy donovan. he is expounding the idea that has always been close to me, the warriors play for all hawaii, not just oahu. this year maui, next year kauai, next hilo or kona. who knows how much more fans they will generate, but the major plus will be the additional funds they could get for uh because of more participation by fans and businesses.
  219. whitey February 25, 2009 7:10 am
    if jd and tc are going to fly, they will probably use hawaiian. this would be a good chance to test if the warrior’s charter a 767, load the back or front end with players and coaches, then sell the extra seats in the back or front to the oahu fans who would like to see the scrimmage. keep the price reasonable and may help the warriors keep their flight cost down.
  220. Garret February 25, 2009 7:15 am
    With all the red ink anticipated at UH, JD is considering spending a lot of money staging a practice and scrimmage on Maui. I hope Hawaiian Air is footing the airfare. Team fly in the morning, scrimmage, fly back to Oahu the same day that evening…
    Ralph,
    I do not think that JD expects to lose money if the Warriors go to Maui for this event! They could either charge a nominal amount for the practice/scrimmage, or make money from the concessions and from the merchandise sales.
    Making money, increasing the fan base, and enhancing recruiting on Maui seems like a great idea to me. If they go with free admission (which would maximize the turnout), then the concessions and merchandise sales could hopefully get to the break even point. I’d assume that PPV sales would increase on Maui after the event, which would result in a net profit from the trip.
    I doubt that the Warriors would stay overnight on Maui due to budgetary conditions and due to the practice schedule.
  221. Manoa February 25, 2009 7:24 am
    The idea of playing on Maui is a good one. It is an old idea started with June. Recall June had us open the season on Maui with Montana (?) I believe. He wanted to play games and have scrimmages and practices on the neighbor islands. The idea was shot down because of costs and the loss of revenue from games. A scrimmage would be a lot less costly than a game.
  222. Buffoman February 25, 2009 7:24 am
    Best pancakes in Hawaii bar none – Boots & Kimos, Kailua. People been telling me about it so I finally went. Did Koa, IHOP, Big City, Denny’s, etc.. None compare to Boots & Kimos. Closest second, Fran’s, in Maui. I like better than Tasty Crust.
  223. whitey February 25, 2009 7:28 am
    thanks garret. sometimes planning outside of the box brings more positives and help. true, uh is not in the best financial condition, but if you want to generate more fans and money, are you going to keep doing the same thing??? jd knows that there are a lot of untapped potential money outside of Oahu, but they cannot get these because they have no personal connection with them. example, if tom had not told his client on maui about uh, all the money would have gone to nevada reno. that money is being used to help the warriors. uh in turn invited him to oahu and honored him at one of the games. they could do this for all their major donors.
  224. moon February 25, 2009 7:52 am
    mama’s pancakes are the best
  225. Stretch February 25, 2009 7:55 am
    I was talking with a friend in LA about the game in LV. He was mentioning that he wants to set up a “Hawaii Only” poker tournament that weekend. Probably at one of the downtown casinos. His idea is maybe a $100 buy in and all money, minus casino fees, gets paid out. He is trying to figure out how much interest there might be. Anyone interested??
  226. Willie February 25, 2009 7:57 am
    Buffoman, if I venture to the Windward side will try Boots & Kimos.
    Please check out Original Pancake House on Dillingham Blvd. Unreal selection and top quality pancakes. Buttermilk, buckwheat & 49er (chewy flat style crepe kine) broke da mouth!
    My wife makes better pancakes then Koa, IHOP, Big City & Denny’s.
    The idea of playing on Maui is a good one. It is an old idea started with June. Recall June had us open the season on Maui with Montana (?) I believe. He wanted to play games and have scrimmages and practices on the neighbor islands. The idea was shot down because of costs and the loss of revenue from games. A scrimmage would be a lot less costly than a game.
    Manoa,
    I think that the problem with having a regular season game on Maui is that UH makes more money by having games at Aloha Stadium. I think that UH gets between $500k and $1 mil for games at Aloha Stadium (other school with luxury boxes who get to keep all stadium revenue get up to $5 mil per game). I think that the game in Maui didn’t lose money, but it didn’t make as much as it would have made at Aloha Stadium.
    However, UH makes nothing off its regular spring practices. So, if UH made a little money then that would be great! You are correct that the expenses would be lower than before because UH wouldn’t be staying overnight and having to provide for the refs, etc.
  229. Buffoman February 25, 2009 8:00 am
    Here’s the idea to help JD raise dollars and bring UH students closer to the school and athletic department.
    Get the business school to work a project to look at the cost benefits to use the “Stanley” and at times the “Les” to stage concerts, with music groups that college kids like (not old folks). Do it in a way that sets a calendar for these concerts.
    The more the students stay on campus and go to a venue they are comfortable with, the more they may venture into other (athletic) events.
    BTW, the athletic department keeps all revenues generated from concerts staged in the athletic venues.
    Think about it, 10000 students in 3 sold out Coldplay concerts. That’s some serious coin.
  230. Garret February 25, 2009 8:01 am
    whitey,
    This idea by JD to have a spring practice/scrimmage on a neighbor island is a great one in my opinion! I could see Maui being first because of the past events already held there, but if a suitable site could be found I’d hope that Kauai and the big island would get future years.
  231. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER February 25, 2009 8:02 am
    Aloha Kakahiaka!
    Warrior SF junket to Maui makes sense.
  232. Glenn February 25, 2009 8:05 am
    Aside from football, you can get the best food ideas from the tsaikos. Personally, I need a breakfast place for 10 people for 2 hrs w/o getting stink eye.
  233. Garret February 25, 2009 8:05 am
    Buffoman,
    That is a great idea! Thy would have to take into account the competition from other concert venues in Hawaii…they have to at least match the deals being offered elsewhere to get the concert tours to go on campus.
    The big advantage for UH is that UH students would be the target market for many concert tours, so having the concert on campus would help them get the students to go. With the difficult market that concert promoters have now due to the economy, that is a trump card UH has that the other venues cannot match.
  234. whitey February 25, 2009 8:12 am
    Buffoman. see thinking outside of the box can potentially bring good results and yours is an excellent one. i remember back when i was in school on the mainland, went to see brothers 4, kingston trio, peter paul and mary, etc. oooopppppsssss, showing my old fart oge.
  235. Stretch February 25, 2009 8:14 am
    If Toyota can set up a concert in the baseball stadium, I am sure that it can be done again!!
    There are concerts set up at the Blaisdell, why not have them at SSC where they can have more people attend??
  236. whitey February 25, 2009 8:16 am
    Glenn, if you are on Maui, you can go to Tasty Crust, request the private room in advance and have your pancake meeting at no additional cost. can seat around 20.
  237. whitey February 25, 2009 8:19 am
    Buffoman, a great way to start your concert idea at SSC is to have Nalani, her group, and her friends perform there. “A Hawaiian Night At SSC”. sounds good!!!
    stretch, (Stephen)
    good point.
    i don’t see why they don’t rent out the SSC for more non UH sports events. they can make money that way.
    i know they used it for that miss universe pageant and were going to use it for mariah’s concert before she cancelled.
    i’ve gone to a few MMA events and to one WWF show at the blaisdell, and their a/c and “Jumbotron scoreboard” just doesn’t cut it anymore.
    is it something to do with the promoters like Tom Moffatt and their deals with the blaisdell?
    if they could get it done, that could be another good source of income for the athletic department.
  250. CalWarrior February 25, 2009 9:01 am
    Concerts are a tough biz…Things have changed a lot in the last several years. Making money off the the big acts has become very difficult. It is now the acts primary source of revenue due to the pirating of music through website downloads.
    One possible way to make money is to bring several smaller acts in and create a themed festival with a couple of mid-sized acts to anchor the event. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be indoors. I’ve promoted concerts on the mainland to benefit a university’s athletic department by partnering with local radio stations. The biggest challenge is the distraction it can cause within the operations of the athletic department. These shows are tremendous work and take focus away from marketing season tickets, sponsorships, etc. If you could find a reputable local promoter to pull the whole thing together, there would be less money for the venue but also less risk.
    Thank you all for the kind comments on the idea.
    Here’s part 2 of the “Out of the Box”.
    As our beloved “Uncle Tom” is getting on in years, and he is an institution in Hawaii, the AD should go out and grab him. Convince the Chancellor to bestow an Honorary Doctorates Degree for his marketing and business efforts in Hawaii. Then get him to advise the business folks on how to avoid pitfalls in staging a calendar of concerts. Yes, it may cut into his business, but there may also be a way to include him in on “the take” at the end. I would prefer getting Tom Moffat to help stage an event that a new promoter to the game. He has so many contacts and can do this stuff in his sleep.
    Now if we only get him to help us get some of that red ink off the AD books, he’d be a hero to Hawaii and truly worthy of the Honorary Degree.
    Why not start small with concert before the sports venue at SSC or a baseball game to help draw larger crowd. If it works, maybe a regular event to help increase attendance and revenue from sales of UH items, parking and food/beverage. Place small change donation boxes too.
  268. addahknowjoe February 25, 2009 9:31 am
    The bottom line is, whether if it’s a big name artist jammin on stage or an up and coming DJ spinning a big name song, kids going show up. All anyone wants is an excuse to do something.
    Kids wanna drink, maybe eat, dance, hang out with friends and check out the scene. Simple. Nothing fancy. All one needs to do is facilitate an event to cater to those wants.
  269. Stretch February 25, 2009 9:33 am
