Chop Suey Boy wins VB tickets

Avis has selected Chop Suey Boy as the winner of two tickets to Saturday’s volleyball match.

Text or call me at 256-0223 so I may leave the tickets at Will Call.

Because I screwed up the count, there will be an additional drawing for two more tickets Saturday morning.

Mouse Davis is in town for tomorrow’s UH Coaches Clinic, which will be held at the UH athletic complex, and will conclude with the Warriors’ afternoon practice. If you’re any sort of a coach — Pop Warner to college, or if you even feel strongly about the Rams’ selection of Sam Bradford — you’re eligible to attend. Call the UH football office at 956-6508 for details.

Davis is an elevator guy — he’s so popular he often is stopped before he can make it to the UH athletic department’s first-floor elevator — and, yesterday, he could be found chatting at you-know-where.

Which brings us to UH’s most accessible:

1. Greg McMackin. He talks to everyone. Even if you tick him off, he’ll later call back to chat. People know this, too. Play back my tapes, and most of my interviews are interrupted by folks stopping to say hi.

2. Charlie Wade. He’s so accessible he’ll even chat during practices. Thank you, Red Bull.

3. Kara Nishimura. As the softball media relations director, she can’t get Leahey to move over so, I dunno, another reporter or two can sit in the press booth. But she always answers her cell or calls back within minutes. She sets up any  interview you wish. I mean, in what other sport does a player call a reporter and say: “Kara asked me to call you to talk about the home-run record …”  She gives you enough stats that even Kazz would  think: “that’s a lot of stats.”

* * * * *

Of all of the softball hitting records, one that has gone unnoticed is Kanani Pu‘u-Warren’s pursuit of the Rainbow Wahine mark for being hit by a pitch.
“I’m tied for the career, I just need to get hit one more time,” Pu‘u-Warren told the Warrior Beat.
She ha been struck 34 times in her career, including 18 this season.
Pu‘u-Warren, who bats right-handed, appears to have ample spacing in the batter’s box.
“I don’t believe I crowd,” she said. “I have a nicc turn. I get hit a lot on my left left. I honestly don’t remember not being bruised at all this season.”
She said she has “decent pain tolerance.” She also relies on a healthful diet — lots of fruits and vegetables — to speed up the healing process.
But, she said, “once (a briuse) goes away, I get another one.”

If John Estes does not get selected in the draft, look for him to end up as a free agent at San Francisco, Indianapolis, Atlanta or Jacksonville.

Aaron Kia, who is back in town, also has been getting inquiries from several NFL teams.

* * * * *

Did I mention we’re having another drawing for two tickets to tomorrow’s MPSF playoff match between UH and Pepperdine. The tickets are for seats in the lower bowl.

To enter, please post: I’m your best friend in the whole wide world.

Avis will choose a winner tonight.

Nice to see so many local products on the all MPSF teams. A little skewed with Iolani, Punahou, and Kamehameha represented well. Kinda backwards with UH being represented by Europe and the US east coast. I wonder how many local boys are on the UH team and how many local boys are playing for the other MPSF teams. Hope Coach Wade can keep some of those Puns, who are ranked number 1 in the country, here playing for the Warriors.

  25. Pomai April 23, 2010 7:45 am

As we can see, the “EPIC” end of the regular season battle for the Wahine features the possible “antidote” for the home run hitting machine. Fresno State leads the WAC in ERAs as a team and has ALL their pitchers in the top 10. Like wise, the Wahine lead the WAC in hitting as a team and individually with also three Rainbow Wahine in the top 10 individually.

    BUT FIRST!!! NEVADA…

Yesterday I noted that the only thing I was concerned with is our pitching. Ricketts had a hard time closing out the Lady Wolfpack last season losing a 5-run lead, but she managed to win one game off of them, and I believe it was an eventual 3-2 victory, but even in that it was a ‘full court press” by Nevada as the Wahine had a 3-0 lead prior to the final inning.

This time Ricketts has an army of batters behind her. A 3 run lead late into ANY game in this series is hard to imagine. Ricketts will have the edge in confidence in a few hours regardless of the Wolfpack having our number as of late.

For Parnaby, this is my biggest concern in securing a sweep of this series. Overall her ERA is 2.62, but her ERA since WAC play began has risen to 4.72. Not only can one see the simple difference between the two stats, but one also needs to take into account how the WAC average of 4.72 still kept her overall season ERA to a respectable figure. In other words, the ratio is noticeable. In other words her ERA over 17 non conference games was quite remarkable in a good way in that the drop off in WAC ERA over only 4 games to her credit is VERY significant.
Parnaby is 4-0 and has looked very good, like her usual self early on and in the middle of games, but lately has been getting hit pretty hard in spots not to mention a scare in Las Cruces and in Logan before our batting order took over.

I thought the weather and thin air in those enviroments new to Parnaby may have had a factor, but supposedly the weather is fine for today’s game at 1pm HST in Reno and by now Parnaby should have a grasp on the high elevation after spending a whole week in it. I look for her to have a good game tomorrow to start the double header.

Very late last night, the Legislative Conference Committee working on the budget came to an agreement. However, the details are not yet available as to how much money will be appropriated for the various construction projects at Aloha Stadium and the Athletic Department’s assorted facilities. Will post them when the information is released.

The big money issues remaining are the ones dealing with service cutbacks and tax increases. With respect to publicly-funded athletic programs, these increases will not directly impact them; however, indirectly they could.

  80. Derek April 23, 2010 11:25 am

On Artie Wilson’s show this morning with Gib Arnold, Artie said that Gib is hosting 5 recruits this weekend. Is it supposed to be secret as no names were mentioned? No even by the 2 newspapers? Common, man!
If I recall, last weekend it was reported that Shamburger and Barnes was in town. Now, no news? What’s going on?

    Did you notice:
    1) Mel Kiper Jr. is very quiet this year. I guess with 5 guys on the podium, his talking is limited and I notice Steve Young and Jon Gruden, both of whom I like, seem to be getting their 2 cents in more. Of course, Tom Jackson has his usual say and Boomer is the leader. In a way, Kiper seems lost and he’s not a animated as before. Maybe, his picks have not turned out to be on the button, especially Jimmy Clausen.

    Surprise, surprise, surprise (Jim Nabors):
Rainbows beat La Tech 10-0. The way they have been playing, it’s kinda unbelievable. But, that’s good and we’ll see what happens today.

    Things are looking up!
49ers got Davis and Iupati to shore up their bad offensive line to run the ball better and protect their QBs. In the second round, I hope they land
Terrance Cody from Alabama, NT. Otherwise, I think they should go cornerback or safety. Javier Arenas or Taylor Mays might be available if they are lucky.

  81. Kazz April 23, 2010 11:28 am

    W-Doc,

I thought it was interesting that a roof over the 1st and 3rd base sides of the softball stadium were considered. Personally, I don’t think that is a necessity as having proper lighting for the field for night games and other maintenance and repairs to the facility, INCLUDING securing the Wahine’s batting cages and equipment.

  82. Loa April 23, 2010 11:35 am

Kazz – re your #81. According to my understanding of how priorities are set for CIP projects in each state agency or department, the principal users usually determine what should be done first. Why not ask Coach Coolen what input he had in selecting the improvements. I suspect that covering the bleachers would be a high priority for most fans even if it is not one of yours.

The details of each appropriation are not in the legislative budgets. What will happen is that come July 1, 2010, the (lameduck) Governor will start releasing funds – or holding them back in order to let the next Fifth Floor occupant decide what to do.

Frankly, under the best of circumstances, I doubt that any improvements will be in place until the 2012 season. If there are significant hassles or if the money were removed during the negotiations, it may be anywhere from five to ten years before the improvements will be in place.

That’s why it’s so important to be actively involved in the political process at every step along the way.

Thanks for the updates, Kazz! GO WAHINE!!!

  101. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 23, 2010 12:55 pm

    W-Doc,

I’m only thinking of the players, future players, and coaches of the softball program. 1.7 million is a lot and I don’t know if they will be willing to give it all for softball.

My point is that fans can bring umbrellas, ponchos, and sweaters to the game. The more important accomodations should be for the student athletes and coaches. A roof over all the seats will cost a lot and if the legislature is willing to throw more money for CIP with softball, I’d rather see the money go towards equipment needs and areas of the stadium that serve the athletes directly since I feel that softball won’t get the full 1.7 million requested.

  102. Ralph April 23, 2010 1:00 pm

Kiper’s picks are flubs, he shouldn’t rate or rank position players, not even close to what NFL teams are picking.

  147. Ralph April 23, 2010 2:17 pm

I’m surprised golden tate was taken so late in the draft, he ate up our secondary with his speed. I guess performance against our safeties don’t count, on tape he must not have gotten as much separation as he did in the Sheraton Bowl.

  148. SeattleZZ April 23, 2010 2:18 pm

  154. Kazz April 23, 2010 2:26 pm

If Majam struck out 4xs, I assume she wasn’t walked as much.

Actually this is better. One game doesn’t account for much. Yeah she didn’t have her usual kind of game, but different story tomorrow.

I can’t stand it when other pitchers pitch around our players and get away with it. I think I was the only one NOT applauding when Majam was walked so many times against LaTech.

They say a walk is as good as a hit… yeah.. FOR most players, but this is different.

  155. Ralph April 23, 2010 2:26 pm

happy to learn that Oakland picked up Yamon Figurs, K State, in the off season, got 4.3 speed. little guy, slot and KO. but we don’t have a passer to get him the ball.

  156. Ralph April 23, 2010 2:33 pm

Taylor Mays unhappy with Pete Carroll, former coach by pass him for another db from Texas. Isn’t the 49’ers and Seahawks in the same division, time to show the old coach up game time.

I’m slowly getting to not be a fan of coach Trap..

Brah, “AJ” is one freakin’ ROAD WARRIOR!!!!

She’s exploded on all the road WAC games and still doing so and this is the time of the season it REALLY counts!!!

Last season, she dropped off significantly and when you only get two players (Taualii and Milca) hitting above .300 last season, you get the result you expected.

This year, MUCH different, MUCH more promise!!!

    Re-Tyson Alualu

As I was driving up to a McDonald’s drive-thru this morning I see in the window a newspaper displayed. In the center of the front page, a caption reading “Alualu’s faith rewarded as 10th pick in NFL draft”. I buy the paper for that reason. It’s the Honolulu Advertiser. It’s the best seventy five cents I’ve ever spent. I read the article, kind of teary eyed. Up until now I didn’t know too much about the former St. Louis HS and University of California star. I read over the years that he’s always been in the spotlight on both levels of play, but it’s in Curtis Murayama’s article of Alualu that I see that Alualu’s accent to where he found himself in the draft yesterday and on the front page today came with a lot of determination, hard work and faith. For Alualu to have swam upstream, to have endured the highest echelons of schooling and competition on the fields and to have highly succeeded, serves very much as an inspiration to others under similar circumstances and hurdles that he faced to swim upstream, too . And to give themselves a chance. When Sapolu, and others from Hawaii, gained notoriety of making it into the NFL a lot of other youth in the communities looked on. And dreamed. And tried to make it to NFL. Many fell short. But it was the propagation of pride in the community that enveloped that served as an inspiration for many players to try. And to have the highest aspirations. Maybe one of them, then, was Alualu looking on. And up. Maybe with the news of Alualu being drafted so high yesterday might serve likewise as the drive, the infectious hunger, for others to dream of reaching the top, too. Personally I hope so. For in the end if this feeling of pride of succeeding on the field and in the classroom breeds, the caliber of football becomes better in Hawaii in my opinion.

Best wishes to Tyson Alualu and his family as he marks the beginning of his next journey. Best wishes to the next youths looking on at Alualu, and up, that they become inflated with pride and guidance of faith to succeed in their lives. And to begin their journeys. When newspapers reserve front page coverage for feel good stories like this, they’re like the helping hands of potentially making the youth open their eyes. Thank you Curtis, thank you Honolulu Advertiser for the well written story on Tyson Alualu.

Tyson followed in the footsteps of his relatives Tupu who went to Oregon and then Hawaii, and Ben who went to the University of Arizona. Sometimes, it’s the examples right in the front of us, in our own families that blaze the trail.

Looks like the Titans’ draft today ends Ryan Mouton’s hopes to earn their returner job.

To address the problem, the Titans selected Southern California receiver Damian Williams with the No. 77 pick overall in the third round. He was the fifth receiver taken in the draft and coach Jeff Fisher said Williams was a good enough receiver they would have taken him on that basis alone.

But Williams returned two punts for touchdowns last season, the first to do that for the Trojans since a guy named Reggie Bush in 2004. That made him a must-have for a team that struggled so much to find a returner in 2009 the Titans often settled for simply fair catching punts.

“A very, very talented punt returner and all-around tremendous athlete so we’re excited to bring him aboard,” Fisher said. “We think he will solve some of our return needs that we’ve had as of late, so we’re very excited to get Damian.”

The Titans used five different players to handle punt returns in 2009 and averaged a measly 6.7 yards per return largely due to 22 fair catches for 25th in the league. They tried rookie Ryan Mouton at the job, but he was the one who fumbled at the Jets—turnovers turned into two touchdowns in a 24-17 loss on Sept. 27.

  205. BG April 23, 2010 5:56 pm

    Hi everyone!

    Kazz

Why do you think Coolen pitched Kaia instead of Stephanie? Kaia did a great job until the 7th. Since Ricketts didn’t relieve Parnaby in the crucial 7th, I’m crossing my fingers and toes that Steph is alright.

  206. al April 23, 2010 6:12 pm

garret…i believe that mouton is the projected starter at one of the cornerback positions this year.

bg…hopefully not an injury to ricketts, my guess is that nevada with a 6.00+ era should be a lesser opponent for uh. that being said, it was a good series to give ricketts’ arm a bit of a rest. my guess is that she’ll pitch the opener tomw with parnaby in the second game with ricketts available for relief duty.

  207. BG April 23, 2010 6:21 pm

    Hi Al…

I guess that’s one way to look at it. However, as Kazz pointed out, Nevada was picked to finish #2 in the WAC pre-season and has been Hawaii’s nemesis. It just seems odd that Coolen would change anything while the WAC championship is still in doubt.

  212. Garret April 23, 2010 6:35 pm

    Al,

Mouton, McCourty, Hood and Hill are all competing for 1 starting CB spot for the Titans. They do not current have a projected starter at that spot. The other CB starting spot is set. They also talked about drafting a CB this year to be their CB of the future, and they were looking at either getting a CB/returner or a WR/returner…for Mouton’s sake, I’m glad they got a WR/returner.

    RE: Parnaby starting over Ricketts.

I just think that Coolen thought he’d throw something at Nevada that they’ve never seen before.

Coolen was probaby the MOST concered person regarding this series.

Parnaby proved to be what she exactly what she would bring to this team and that’s another ACE for us.

    I’m real happy for her.

I think many forget or don’t know how capable Jenna “J-Rod” Rodriguez is at the mound too.

Her hitting very crucial but I like the presence she brings on the mound. Plus she’s got some “pop” in her pitches. She’s more comparable to Ricketts’ style as opposed to Parnaby who relies more on movement based pitches.

I like Rodriguez’s “stare” when she’s pitching. Its different from her poised demeanor when she stands tall at the plate.

Nevada game drew 289 fans, and they were paid attendance. Coolen wants it to remain admission free. But Coolen runs a program that exist because of Title IX, won’t be cut because UH needs a balance in athletic opportunities, it will exist whether his team wins or loses, makes money or loses a ton, its like an entitlement. Shouldn’t UH and our AD look at ways of cutting the red- admission fee, more signage, more legwork to solicit in kind services and donations, etc. The program like baseball and women basketball are nearing the 1 million dollar mark in the red. Although baseball improved last season with a spike in attendance, the fiscal year report is not available to see if bb ended with black numbers or red numbers.

  226. Ralph April 23, 2010 8:27 pm

I don’t think an athletic fee can be justified if the UHAD makes no substansive attempt to reduce the red in house. And McNamara is the AD in charge of external UHAD affairs to help generate income.

Alvin got an ok for us to have a donation box at the last two SoftBows games. Email me if you would like to help babysit the box. Still working on logistics. It would be ideal if we could have a couple of BIG football players sitting with the donation box, too.

  228. Ralph April 23, 2010 8:36 pm

I like the way Pearl City goes after each pitch, very aggressive. I would hope UH would do the same, I see Kolten as one who is willing to swing at the first pitch, be a little more confident at the plate and take your swings. I know a walk is as good as a hit so some of them are being very patient, but often times they find themselves in a whole on the count and not the pitcher has the advantage. Even Coolen’s charges go up to the plate swinging.

j(J) must be hard at work at the capitol. The State wants to cockroach the county hotel tourist tax share, maybe the hurricane fund, or the 911 enhanced fund, more like special slush fund tax the legislature keeps levying on us and taps whenever they need money.

i am sure that jd has trimmed as much of the fat that he can short of closing down some of the sports and/or services. if you think otherwise as your comment suggests then you should arrange for a face to face meeting with jd so that he can go over the details with you.

i don’t find that a fair comment that insinuates that the ad is not doing his job nor is trying to do his job. i for one feel that he has done a very good job. surely there will be decisions that will not be popular but sometimes they have to be done.

the glaring problems are the recent and somewhat drastic reductions in gate revenues in football and baseball. both of which at first jd had nothing to do with.

mbb i believe will rebound and it will take some doing over a couple of years. however, from what i’ve seen, jd made a very good hire in gib arnold. he has been working extra hard in recruiting, basically by himself at that. his personality and good character has made many of those who at first did not endorse him realize that this is a good man and hire.

jd understands that you have to spend money to make money. he has opened the purse strings for recruiting realizing that to have a good product you need quality players.

in time, jd will go down as one of our best ad ever.

I wonder what Nickelberry wanted or what Gib wanted to pay him that couldn’t be resolved, or was that just a rumor posted on the board. I’ve seen his name tossed around for weeks before he was hired by DePaul. Was money ever an issue whether he came here or ended at DePaul. Maybe your little birdie can enlighten us, although it won’t matter now that he is at DePaul. But you alluded to the fact that JD is willing to spend money to make money, I think good coaching brings in talent, talent wins games, winning brings in more fans, and JD smiles more as his coffers increases. What you say!

  240. Ralph April 23, 2010 10:37 pm

Al come join us at the sb game next friday or saturday. see the inside of the facility, the crowd, and ask, can UH add revenue. Look at the fence, several banners-under armour (the women wear UA gear), Easton (the use Easton bats), bank of Hawaii, Pepsi and Oceanic (all sponsors of tournament), and Phiten (the magnetic tape is very expensive, for that small signage the soccer team alone uses more tape in one night than the signage probably cost the company) but there are no other signage to make money. I hear Jack in the box ad over the PA system. The AD come to the game, they must have ideas to cut the red out of the sb program.

  241. Ralph April 23, 2010 10:43 pm

I knew the words “substantive attempt” would perk someone’s interest.
But Pomai, Kazz and I sit there in the stadium and wonder why they can’t generate some income to help the team. The UHAD pays what it can, the main things like scholarship, payroll, etc, but there are other items that could be addressed, like, should they continue to run the table and win the WAC, is there AD money for rings like the fb team got, how about the other UH sports that win the WAC, do they receive a ring, bracelet (women of course), etc. just wondering. not jinxing them. If you good you win, and the Na Wahine is the bestest in the WAC.

  242. Slugger April 23, 2010 10:44 pm

  244. Ralph April 23, 2010 10:48 pm

slugger you found any big guys to quard the keeper of the box, unless the keeper is a big tsaiko.

  245. al April 23, 2010 10:49 pm

a big birdie told me that to ge nickleberry we needed to spend a few more dollars, but, that would have left the third asst coach with not much.

the gibber went outside of the box and was trying to raise money to pay for all his coaches. he was orginally given a 240k budget for three asst coaches. yah, the 240k is equivalent to the head coaches salary.

however, the hc coach’s contract is loaded with incentives. some attainable while others rather far fetched.

to put the asst coaches salary in perspective. associate head coach tom roese was making 134k at nebraska. so he probably had a pay increase to come to hawaii. that doesn’t leave too much left. my guess is that jd did stretch the aggregate asst coaches money just to make this work.

the good thing is that all of the basketball coaches pay will go up with each year as the team’s success does. it is my belief that after two good year’s arnold will get not only an extension but a pay increase as well. the asst’s pay will go up accordingly.

note: nickleberry’s former boss at clemson took the depaul job at a reported 2+million annually. so one can imagine what kevin nickleberry is being paid there.

  246. Ralph April 23, 2010 10:50 pm

I thought they hired Sam to coach the fb team.

  247. al April 23, 2010 11:08 pm

please remember that it was the fumbler who denied monies to the last championship sb team.

those sponsors for the softball team are few and hard to come by. its all in the numbers.

    go figure…
how much of a return would a business get for their marketing dollar at an event that at most is watched by 300 folks and please do not count the family and friends in the attendance?

altho’ i am not privy to the cost to display each banner it is obvious that those with banners have a contra account with the softbal program and the university athletic dept in general.

easton, they sponsor all or a certain number of new bats each year in return they get to put up a banner and hope that there is enough of a viewing audience both live and tv that the high school and youth league girls go running out to purchase easton bats, too.

the same premise applies to ua, phiten, pepsi, et al.

advertising budgets across the board have been shrinking. for example, would a certain optometrist’s office want to put a banner at the sb games?

would your return on investment pays for itself?

anyway…that donation box would work for now. but, i’d put it away after the third inning and go enjoy the game.

  248. jm2375 April 23, 2010 11:08 pm

  250. Ralph April 23, 2010 11:13 pm

Al I guess we are small time when it come to athletics. K State resigned Frank Martin to an extension, million plus, with an incentive, sign the contract by March 18 2010, receive $250K bonus, remain on contract through the 2012 season, receive an additional $250K bonus, plus other incentives on wins, tournament play, etc. He was like Gib, an assistant all his career, K State is his first HC job. Started as a HS coach for 15 years in Florida. K State made it to the final 8, first time since 1987. K State averaged about 6-7K fans five years ago, enter Huggins who brought along Martin 4 years ago, since then they have sold out the arena nearly every game for 4 years at 12500+ per game. Coaching makes a difference, especially if they can teach the players to be winners and they have won 20+ 4 consecutive years.

ralph…i am sure that if we packed the aloha stadium or the stan sheriff or the les, selling out every game we would more than double our revenues we could raise ticket prices and have a hefty student fee as well. the theory of supply and demand rules all.

    can we get there?
will the people of hawaii buy in?

its too bad, because i came from the days of old termite palace and klum gym. we were barely a program. high school sports ruled the day and an asahi versus red sox game was big time.

we could become a very good program but we gotta stay on top of it.

we can’t let another herman frazier dismantle any momentum we may have had, i.e. warrior football june jones era.

anyway…have a good day tomw ralph.

  254. al April 23, 2010 11:25 pm

  255. al April 23, 2010 11:31 pm

methinks a small table at the entranceway with a nicely made sign done professionally (hint, hint, annodahjoe) would work catching folks as they come in.

sort of like, “hey, if you are coming in for the game how about a small kine donation” almost like a pseudo ticket purchase. i think that may obigate some to give.

    or

pass the bucket from one aisle to another like they do to collect tithes and offerings in church. say when the peak of attendance has arrived.

  260. Ralph April 24, 2010 12:05 am

AL i think we can get there, but we got to win. Riley won 56% of his games, for every 100 he won 56 lost 44, and that is why the Stanley had only 5-6K and he referred to it as a big crowd by Hawaii standards. Yes, he was a nice guy before everyone jumps on me, but I like to win more than just say I know a nice guy or he was a nice guy. We need to be in 9000 range consistently and there is no reason we can’t, until we keep losing ball games. Same with Trap, he is winning at a 54% career total, do the math, mediocrity will not generate interest and build fan base. If we were an NFL team like the Lions, people will still come because its the NFL and the visiting team is worth watching, not so for UH college sports. Look at wvb, they have a tradition of winning from the Klum days, still winning, competitive, wins the WAC, gets invited to the NCAA, and leads the nation in attendance every year. Got to Win. Coolen is winning at a 64% clip, very good, they need to win the WAC more often though, only twice in 19 years for him. I think softball can bring in 500 fans a game on a regular basis, but we got to get into the NCAA to gain respect and interest.
