Monteilh, Iceman honored; Funaki is No. 1

Free safety Keao Monteilh and kicker Dan “Iceman” Kelly have been named winners of WAC Player of the Week awards. Monteilh is the top defender after intercepting two passes in a 32-29 upset of Fresno State. Kelly kicked another game-winner in overtime.

Head coach Greg McMackin announced today that Inoke Funaki will remain as his No. 1 quarterback. “There is no quarterback controversy,” McMackin said. Well, there might be at No. 2, which is now open to Tyler Graunke, Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch.

In between games 2 & 3 of the Women’s Volleyball game this coming Friday October 10, the 2007 WAC Champion Women’s Softball team will be presented with their long overdue Bracelets. The Tsaikos, led by Pomai, pulled together and were able to fund the cost of these bracelets. Let’s continue to support the women and show up for this event. It will also be a great way to participate in the Homecoming week and get pumped up for the football game Saturday.

The Tsaikos have a group of 20 tickets at $8 each. There is still a few more remaining. If anyone wants to join us, send me an email at stretch6592 at yahoo.

  18. Rich2176 October 6, 2008 7:12 am

Watched the replay of the game last night from the GamePlan broadcast. It was the Bulldog feed. The announcers were fairly balanced and didn’t sound like homers. They gave many props to Mouton and explained that iceman has had a rough start to the season.

Anyway, don’t know if anyone saw this but it was on the GP feed. Right after the winning FG, Kelly ran straight to the sideline and jumped into the stands to receive a big hug and kiss from his girlfriend. He spent several minutes up there with his family. It really showed the human side of this great player.

Ronnie was right. There were a lot of red(necks/shirts) in the section next to us, but fortunately they didn’t have much to cheer about for most of the game.

  19. Loa October 6, 2008 7:13 am

Congrats to the Warriors and the coaching staff
the boys played hard, coaches had em prepared and they executed when had to
you knew the turnover numbers had to swing our way one of these days
so happy for Inoke, as Coach Mack would probably say he’s one tough mother
    no personal fouls this week?

Ronnie – “it another Warrior ……. ” instant classic!

Stretch is right, we need to move on to the next opponent, and no forget what he did before the sugar bowl last year

everyone have a safe and happy day

    Morning Warrriors Gang!

Nu Nui Congrats to Dan and Kaeo.

Gotta luv how the camera guys, even from the fresno broadcasting team, followed Dan up the stands to celebrate with his ohana. And the camera just stuck on that moment.

Sure hope they can stick it to LaTech the way Boise did last week. Their QB cannot handle any kine pressure.

  24. whitey October 6, 2008 7:18 am

ok, getting to that time of the day when breakfast of champions call, so may you all have a great day and the sunshine will give you plenty of energy. aloha.

an speaking of being your best, a big shoutout to
Mr. Tuioti! Good job, coach! very uplifting the vibes you giving off, noticeable even in Hilo.

and you know da drill, no worry about da bradda whose attitude is not so spiffy but when you look at him he get all da stats. the biggest stat is attitude and he get one 5.0/40 in attitude.

no worry about 5 starz. for him he should go away, get away from junk influence which affects his attitude. dat would be his best shot at getting a A in life’s progression. us oldies have seen all dis before.

wow w/ egg clearly smeared all over my face i must apologize to inoke, coach mack, and specifically the rest of the offensive coaching staff. i’ll admit i had my doubts and now will go back to being a fan instead of a wannabe coach 🙂

great job boyz and congrats to da iceman and keao, to overcome so much (fresno gamesmanship, fresno refs)

no resting on laurels, let’s run thru this gammock that the wac is trying to put us through: fresno, latech, boise on a short week, nevada, then back to back roadies.

  35. ewagirl808 October 6, 2008 7:58 am

I woke up with a smile on my face Sunday morning. Good job
    warriors!!!

  36. bighilofan2 October 6, 2008 8:01 am

i cannot wait for da superferry to come Kawaihae if only to do da a’haa crossing in one big boat. but the real benefit going be to take canoes to Maui and race em back from Hana. can borrow trailers and stuff, but fo have one supah big race. gotta have the canoes. check da channel fo da best time of mid August, when the north easterly swells have long intervals, and geev em. an an…. no panties…. 😀

  37. bighilofan2 October 6, 2008 8:11 am

    Jim Donovan,

I wonder if the superferry would give UH a plug and give the team a r/t to Maui or Kawaihae, the Seaside give the team a weekend of rooms, and UH have a short tutorial or controlled scrimmage with Maui High School invitees and coaches. say next spring. say invite the big island coaches to bring their own (pick a number) players. give enough time for peeps to make their logistics. sure would imporove interest in our team. you can make it happen! 😀 just a thought.

    Go Warriors!!

  38. bighilofan2 October 6, 2008 8:14 am

isn’t the high school stuff Amemiya’s job?

  39. bighilofan2 October 6, 2008 8:15 am

    kekoa,

I see you Saturday, for sure, maybe Friday nite too. .

  40. Committed Road Warrior October 6, 2008 8:17 am

    Monday morning. How’s everyone doing?

Despite having to get back to regular business, I’m still psyched about Saturday’s win. The magnitude of the win hasn’t exactly set in just yet, but both fans and the team will need to put this aside and focus on LA Tech coming into town this weekend. They are another team with a good running attack, however their QB is a somewhat erratic passer (sub-50% at last check), so hopefully we can take advantage of that if we can force them into throwing situations.

  41. XxFaithxX October 6, 2008 8:18 am

    Congrats to Keao and Iceman!!

A big salute to the “Green Bamboo Curtain” (aka the Hawai’i defense.)

They bent at times but they did not break. A true team effort.

    Keep it up against LaTech.

  44. addahknowjoe October 6, 2008 8:47 am

    Kakahiaka everyone!

Looking forward to a constructive and productive week.

Spent yesterday talking with a few people who said they either missed the game or turned it off thinking Hawaii would lose.

    Aiyah!

Imagine, if your family, friends or society treated you that way. Just assumed you’d fail and simply gave up on you. Turn the channel on you. Not a good predicament to be in.

You know, riding through this season with the Tsai-kos have made the losses bearable. The upside is fighting through those losses with you guys has made the victories that much sweeter!

We lose together. We WIN TOGETHER!!!!

    I love it!

    Mahalo everyone!

Eh! Somebody hurry up and fly in some Fresh Ruston Jambalayin’ French Quarter Bayou Gumbo already!

    WE HUNGRAY!!!

  48. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 6, 2008 8:55 am

Quick inquiry out to Virginia Hinshow concerning next week’s start of the Ching/Cooke renovations project. Will there be a ceremony of any kind? If so, will it be open to the public including Tsaikos who can make it?

Is there any interest in having a launch party put on by the Tsaikos? One thing we might consider doing is to find out the number of people in the work crew and then pick up a bunch of pizzas or bentos, sodas, and easy-2-serve dessert for them to celebrate the project’s start.

Another would be to have a celebratory gat-together at next weel’s Na Koa luncheon for us.

The personal issues concerning money around our house have been made even more troublesome by getting hit with still another rent increase – third time since 2005 especially since my job disappears at the end of the year. That pretty much wipes out season tickets for men’s volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, and basetball, and, of course season football tickets in 2009 as well as vacations and any thought of getting a new-2-us car. Hope we can figure out some other way to support UH and still pay the bills.

Speaking of money – I dropped off a check for $15 to Alan Inaba late last week from the HI-5 collctions rounded up to the next $5 level. Okay, folks, let’s not just drink more at the T-Gates but also bring in your whistle-wetting bottles & cans from home to add to the total.

Greetings and Blessings, Warrior Nation! 🙂

Howzit duffer and las vegas, howz you guys today?

duffer, do you know what the hand gesture mentioned in those articles was? I’m just curious…

CONGRATS TO ‘AO BOY AND THE ICEY ONE!!!
    Way to represent fellas!!!

  65. al October 6, 2008 10:15 am

    duffer,
    that is nutz.

just what is this gesture that they are talking about. i mean, not the bird right?

  66. koakane™ October 6, 2008 10:29 am

duffer read article written on Maui league games. the OIA initiated the hand shake before the game because of safety. we all realized the emotions that grip the young athletes at the end of each contest. so it was best to show sportsmanship instead of having the players get caught with the excitement at the time. being on all sides I understand how it gets mixed up. experienced it as a player, coach, parent and even bystander. so best way as I see it is to be preventative and keep the safety of the players foremost. at no time I see this as a departure from a well played game or unsportsmanlike conduct by either team.

I too miss the olden day of coming together at end of game as combative warrior and embarrassing your opponent letting him know good game. have made many close friends years after all dem high school battles were over and a times we reminisce those battles.

alas times have changed so safety must be a priority.

  67. da princess' classmate October 6, 2008 10:31 am

da skins have officially bought into coachzorn. coach wants to give them today off, team says hell no, we’re coming to work, don’t break our rhythm coach. that’s awesome.

go warriors, GL saturday nite. Wow, saturday’s gonna start bright and early 6am in the morning red river rivalry #1 vs #5, then 3pm gaytors and tiggers in da swamp. gonna be a fun fun day.

  73. d1島 October 6, 2008 10:56 am

    Nice t-shirt design.

Is Kelly’s routine similar to Grasso’s where he usually does very little kicking in the beginning of the week?

  74. d1島 October 6, 2008 10:58 am

    Stephen,
How are the rest of the players doing? Seemed like a brutal game on Saturday. Does it seem like they were any more beat up than normal?

  75. duffer October 6, 2008 11:01 am

    Re: Gesture

    No idea what it is……….

  76. al October 6, 2008 11:09 am

they said it was the symbol of a mountain since they are on the slopes of haleakala.

let’s see. one long finger fully extended.
two adjacent fingers partially extened or folded if you will.
yah that would like a mountain.
in fact, it would look like the kanji for yama or mountain.

    hmmmmm.

perhaps, the hand signing got misinterpretated?

  77. al October 6, 2008 11:12 am

maybe st can display each senior’s tshirt every day?

maybe tsaiko’s could purchase/procure a senior tshirt from each senior? at “cost” of course. (don’t want any ncaa violations do we? wink, wink)

we would wear one or thirty-three.

  78. Hoohiki October 6, 2008 11:14 am

Duffer, whitey, al and anyone else interested…

The gesture is…put both pointer fingers together and both thumbs together and you make a diamond. But it also can look like a female organ.

  79. Tombo Ahi October 6, 2008 11:16 am

that’s a nice shirt. looks like oahu is freezing over.

“My name is Iceman. Learn it well. For it’s the chilling sound of your doom.”

  80. duffer October 6, 2008 11:16 am

I guess this is what the gesture is about…………

Iceman’s shirt is nicer than anything in the rainbow boutique, any chance we can buy one through your blog?

  83. las vegas October 6, 2008 11:27 am

During the amateur sumo meets in Japan the Spanish speaking teams(Peru/Argentina) would often flash that sign (post #79) at the Hawaii/USA/English teams and yell the appropriate word in Spanish.
We would return fire with the middle finger.
Luckily most of Japan had no idea what was going on.
The Japanese teams had their own hand signals, but were much more subtle about it.
Inapproprate yes, but kinda neat at the time, like belonging to gansta groups with 300 pounders.

And yes, it is meant to symbolize the female genitalia.

  84. Hoohiki October 6, 2008 11:32 am

This is just heresay, and I don’t know him personally, but it could shed some light on things….I hear that the KK HC has not been very popular among the team and the other assistant coaches because his “philosophy” and approach to coaching seems to deviate.

  85. d1島 October 6, 2008 11:33 am

Always a learning experience here on the WB.
    Today, learned two things:

    1) All UH FB Seniors have their own t-shirt;
    2) What I learned as a nursery rhyme involving a little spider is now a way to degrade women

  86. bb October 6, 2008 11:41 am

Is this symbol or hand gestures the same as Diamond Dallas Page’s “Diamond Cutter?” If so, a couple of years back, didn’t the guy that got the tee after kickoffs grab the tee, come over to the sideline, get the crowd worked up and then do the “Diamond Cutter” sign?

I have a rhyme and some hand gestures for all the bad sports, Maui or elsewhere. It goes a little something like this:

“Here’s the church, here’s the steeple, open the door and see all the people.”

    Go church, bad sports! 😉

  103. expat October 6, 2008 12:44 pm

La Tech will be interesting. They looked pretty weak against Boise this week. Their QB is an interesting case – originally committed to Boise, then went to Georgia Tech. Started there last year. Graduated and still had 1 year of eligibility so with Paul Johnson coming in (he is not an option QB type) he transferred to La Tech using the NCAA exemption for smart guys who graduate in four years.

So, he has something no other WAC QB has – a year starting for a BCS team. Anyway, he didn’t seem very accurate but he did a decent job “managing” their running game. He also surprised everyone near the end by throwing a perfect strike on a streak pattern. It seemed like it was in excess of 40 yards. Looking at the box score it was Beck I believe and it was 53 yards. They also had a 57 yard play – so more than half of their 202 yards passing came on two plays. Livas is a burner and if he gets the ball he can make things happen. He does kick returns too. Porter is their main rushing threat. Littler guy, but great ability to spin off a tackle and make extra yards. I would guess that a significant number of his 68 yard were after first contact.

Their running game was bottled up by Boise State pretty well. Boise State bottled up Oregon pretty well too though. I would question how well La Tech could battle from behind– but if they got up early they can really pound the ball down the field and eat clock.

Regardless how one feels about the QB situation, including myself, Funaki has earned the starting job. After his gutsy performance in Fresno, he deserves the chance to validate his improvement with the next game. Now, Inoke, go out and get even better. With another week of tweaking and fine tuning, this offense may show some serious potential after all, it just takes some getting used to. I shall recline on my armchair QB sofa and reserve judgement until after the next victory, lol.

  120. Mrs. A-House October 6, 2008 2:26 pm

“PRIDE. PERIOD!” are the words to describe how I’ve been feeling since the Warriors’ outstanding victory against huge odds this past Saturday. To my buddy, Pride., I can pretty well understand why you chose these words as your blog moniker.

Keao and the “Iceman” are deserving of the WAC’s recognition, BUT to Inoke and every one of the rest of the players who donned the Warrior uniform on Saturday…whether or not you stepped on the playing field…you are ALL deserving of KUDOS for committing yourselves to the creed, work hard, play for one another, be responsible and believing in yourselves. “No personal fouls”…AWESOME! Enough has been previously posted about the other ten penalties…those zebras need to assess their responsibilities…if you can’t be TOTALLY impartial, stay off the playing field.

Warriors, love and respect yourselves, your coaches and your teammates. Continue to work hard, focus and be responsible by practicing to be the best football player you can possibly be. If this sounds like something your mother would tell you…so be it. I’m proud of all of you and love each and every one of you like my own son. Imua Warriors!…just do it!

Actually, LaTech is the ideal opponent right now. Dangerous, but beatable and most important, in common with Boise State. It will give us a good gage of how we stack up against Boise, since LaTech is playing both of us on the road. Their little extra preparation time will be negated by their lovely short flight from Ruston.

Interesting but unpleasant articles re the sportsmanship issues on Maui. These KK coaches need to be counseled. The damage they have already done to the young athletes in their charge can and probably will have long-term repercussions in the future. This is really, really tragic. You said you previously were thinking too much before kicking the FG’s. I want to validate your words by letting you know that I tested your theory, and you are absolutely correct! I always watch TV sitting in my recliner (snacking often). As I finish eating and am ready to trash my wrappers or napkins, I squeeze it into a ball and aim for my open trash container about 5 feet away. It usually takes me three tries before I bank it off the back into the bin. Now…”I don’t think, I just do it” as you recommended. BINGO! rimless…first try! Therefore…….Don’t change anything…don’t think…JUST DO IT ! Continued success to a really fine young man !

Some people asked about buying those T-shirts. I think you can’t buy them, but (in general) you can procure them from the families.

So, I’m walking to class today, and I run into Inoke. Took a moment for me to register who he was, so I didn’t get to say Hi. But dang, when you’re 5’5″ like I am, everyone (except homey) looks big. 😀

  140. abdullah fataai October 6, 2008 3:17 pm

“Some people asked about buying those T-shirts. I think you can’t buy them, but (in general) you can procure them from the families.”

What’s the difference between buying and procuring? If rainbow boutique sold nicer stuff all us people wouldn’t be asking about buying or procuring these off the iceman! Now that I think about it…iceman’s shirt isn’t that great. but still nicer than stuff you can buy in the UH stores or walmart.

I don’t think you can pay money for them, but you can ask the families for a shirt. I might be wrong, but that’s my understanding of it. Stephen can clarify this for us all when he gets back.

I think the players would be the best ones to ask about the T-Shirts. I think they make em from there own pocket expense. All Seniors have there own shirt. That would be a good idea to make money and support the team by being able to buy there personalized T-Shirts. Knowing me I’d have each Seniors Shirt and would try to get em all autographed for keeps sake! Anyway, maybe somebody who get akamai ka-knowledge can clarify how this would work?

    Funaki #1…Au’ryte…

Hard for game plan against this kine double threat guys. I know the opposing defensive coordinators going she-she pants when they see the Warriors circled on the calendar. Garrans they going to have some oh-chit moments coming up with a defensive scheme to contain Funaki and the boys! Plus, the offensive coordinators already squirming and she-she pants knowing Blaze “IMPACT” Soares is about to come back and make poi by pounding some guys real soon!

  146. Pride. October 6, 2008 3:39 pm

Great win by the Warriors this past Saturday night. It was a great win for everyone, from the chancellor, AD, and head coach, all the way down to the equipment gang, managers, and medical staff. Everybody won that night.

Offense limited their turnovers which was an improvement from the prior games. Defense caused six turnovers which was an improvement over earlier we played this season. Special teams was all over Fresno, returns for touchdowns, blocked kicks, clutch field goals. Kickoff team flying around like a bunch of crazed maniacs. It looked like Ikaika Malloe unleashed a pack of wild dogs on special teams. I could actually hear the grrrrrs, and the woof woofs through the television screen.

What’s really exciting is that the team is making progress every game. They are getting better and better as the weeks go by. Kudos to the coaching staff for the steady improvement. It’s not how you start but how you finish.

Not to kick a dead horse but that running into the kicker is probably one of the worst calls I have seen in organized sports from T-ball to Pros. Gotta admit it feels good to be on the good end of the turnover margin too. Go warriors. Aurtye!

  149. Pride. October 6, 2008 3:53 pm

Warriors, gird yourselves and prepare well for this week’s game. This week’s game is huge. Louisiana Tech is a very talented team. They have a lot of top level talent in close proximity to their campus. Be wary of the sleeping giant.

The sleeping giant has to travel to Hawaii after a long trip to Idaho the week before. If we hop on them early and keep them down, then we will be in good shape. If we go in thinking that we will walk all over them because we beat a ranked team the week before, then beware. Need to bring your lunch pail and steel toe shoes to every game. Every game will be a knockdown dragout affair. Everbody lifts weights and trains in the offseason, no one takes off. Every game is a dogfight. Judging by this past game’s performance, I think that our Wariors are the meanest dogs.
But dogs need to show up every game and be ready to scrap.

We’re starting to see a change in the league. We are building the reputation of being the most physical team in the league. We need to bring that intensity to every game.

    RE: Fresno State Gam “Officiating”

I too want clarification, not on the calls themselves, but just on what exactly Karl “Kaiser” Benson is trying to accomplish here? Since his beloved “Ultimate WAC Football Showdown/Monster Truck Rally/Taffy Pull ’08” is ruined with a 0-1 Fresno State team, what tricks will the Kommish have up his scales for the UH and Boise State showdown???

    Stay tuned…

    The plot thickens.

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about LaTech and “Over My Dead Body will UH be dancing and scaring us” Dooley… 🙄

    WE MUST……………………. PROTECT THIS HALE!!!

  162. cocobean October 6, 2008 4:48 pm

Other than turnovers, 3rd down conversion has been the Achilles Heal of the O. I have faith that Ron Lee and Rolo are crafting plays to improve this situation. I have faith that Brian Smith will come up with patches for his somewhat leaky O line. Leaks in the O line has been a contributing factor in the team’s poor conversion rate.
Improvement comes in small steps, practice by practice, game by game. The coaches have taken care of their biggest problem – getting the three separate units to play as ONE TEAM. From here it’s easier to improve areas that need improvement. Turnovers, lack of turnovers, kick coverage/return were immediate areas of concern which the coaches focused on and improved. Spotty O line play and poor 3rd down conversion rate are now the areas to be focused on. I have faith Ron, Rolo and Brian will improve those areas of concern. Do you?

    Leis for Coach Mack

Liz Chun joked last night that JJ used to wear a lei all the time during the game and this past Saturday was the first time Coach Mack wore one as a gift from the UH Cheerleaders (again, “kudos” to Chancellor Hinshaw on making sure they came along 🙂 ).

So, can the fans drop them off at the security gate next to the box office before the game to make sure Mack is never short of leis???

It would be funny if he ended up looking like a local graduate with leis up to his forehead and he’s trying to coach the game at the same time! 😆

  165. cocobean October 6, 2008 4:56 pm

The onus should be on the cheer leaders. They gave him his first game day lei. They should continue this winning “tradition’.

  166. chawan_cut October 6, 2008 5:02 pm

thanks to the chancellor for getting the cheerleaders to fresno.
    good timing!

now how can we get the band (or a small pep band) to a road game? i would love to hear Hawai’i 5-0 and Hawai’i Pono’i in another team’s stadium again!

  167. 808flowmaster October 6, 2008 5:05 pm

jm2375 – Thanks! Would be interested in seeing how he’s doing and if he’s playing this week. Seems like we always have some hamstring problems with a few players. I wonder if that’s just a percentage thing with all teams — that a certain number of players are likely to have a hammy problem, or if it’s more to do with our team’s stretching and training routines.

  168. BowsForever October 6, 2008 5:12 pm

Coach Mack wearing a lei pretty much has to become a game tradition. Surprised it didn’t happen sooner, though I never noticed, just like I took for granted that JJ was always wearing one.

The 48 hour rule doesn’t apply to fans, so I’m gonna be enjoying the Fresno win all week. The rest of college football nation really doesn’t know what this team is capable of (partly because the team has yet to play a truly complete game), and that’ll work to our advantage. The coaching staff has done a stunningly good job of fixing the special teams, turnover and personal foul issues, let’s hope they can also limit those illegal blocks and holds make sure the players keep up the good work. Tailoring the offense for Funaki might’ve been done sooner, only the coaches know, but it worked perfectly when it really counted.

The best part is we beat a mostly-on-its-game Fresno at their house with some slightly subpar running at times, a more-porous-than-usual defense (unbelievable job with turnovers, but run defense had been a big strength up ’til Fresno), and a fresh-look offense. If we keep improving every week, I really like our odds at making the Hawaii Bowl.

  173. Kazz October 6, 2008 5:23 pm

    Chawan Cut,

One of my co-workers just came back from Garlic Town and she was with Panda Hawaii I believe (not sure) and the cheerleaders were on the same flight as she was so not sure if UH worked out something there. I thought they flew with the team.

But with the band and all their instruments, unless they rent something locally to where they are flying, I think the $$$$$ issue will be raised more so than flying 6-8 cheerleaders. It would be cool for games like UNLV or at Nevada where the amount of local people there will be more than a game in Ruston, LA for example. Games at Boise State and Fresno State are almost a given. It would really add to the atmosphere for the UH fans.

  174. Jason October 6, 2008 5:26 pm

Fresno State outgained Hawaii in total yards, 522-342, but made enough mistakes to allow yet another opponent to hang close.

Disappointing quote — the Warriors forced those turnovers, they weren’t gifts. The first tip drill was off a great read by Josh Leonard as he sat back in zone and anticipated the quick throw over the middle. Brashton’s interception also came from a read, as he sniffed out the screen to the running back. And Keao’s second pick required a great instinctive break (as the pass was being thrown, not after) and concentration. Two of the fumbles were forced; only the muffed snap was given to us.

  175. Rich2176 October 6, 2008 5:28 pm

Re: Adam – When I saw him at the hotel after practice on Friday, it looked like he had a 5lb bag of ice taped to his hammy. Didn’t look good. I thought it was great that he was still able to go on the field as a team captain. At least the rules haven’t gotten that stupid by making only suited up players go to midfield for the coin toss.

I’ve watched that supposed running into the kicker play several times. WOW…did someone hit the 2 second delay button on his fall?

Either Mac or Donovan needs to address the 10 penalties to ZERO with the WAC….nah…the NCAA.

  176. Jason October 6, 2008 5:48 pm

Rich2176: I’ll tell you the same thing Mack told us today — we need clarification from the conference on that call, the pass interference call, and others. Picture Mack with a sheepish, I-can’t-believe-we-got-hosed-like-that grin on his face as he said clarification. Mack also had the same smile on as he talked about how he started off as a DB coach, and that he would have taught Mouton to cover the receiver that very way — so if something’s wrong, they need to find out what, so they can correct what they teach. (Never mind that Mack literally wrote the book on coaching defensive backs.) Thank goodness we won, or that smile would have changed to something furious.

  185. Committed Road Warrior October 6, 2008 6:08 pm

I agree with chawan_cut about trying to get the band to some of the more higher profile road games during the regular season, but I also understand what Kazz is saying about the $$$$ to send the band members plus equipment to the game site. It’s an unfortunate circumstance to be in.

When was the last time the band was on the mainland for a regular season football game? Of course they went to New Orleans and they were able to scrap up enough money to go to Las Cruces for the WAC Tournament last season, but what about regular season football?

  186. Committed Road Warrior October 6, 2008 6:13 pm

  194. Kazz October 6, 2008 6:53 pm

    Rich,

I guess when I think about it, it doesn’t matter where the officials came from, the bigger thing all on either the back or the “front” of all of our minds is that the WAC had more to loose with Fresno State loosing to Hawaii and of course the WAC has WAAAAYYYY more to loose with US defeating Boise State on da smurf turf.

I’m sure some of us have questioned our own “paranoia” at one time or another, but Saturday’s game is a big piece of evidence.

Benson, we know you are reading this.

  195. Rich2176 October 6, 2008 7:04 pm

Kazz – It really makes you think about the “agenda”. Sure, these guys are human, but geez, even a blind person would have called a hold or two on the Fresno O-Line. I think I remember when I lost my voice – yelling “bull manure” after that awful call against Mouton. There was clear daylight between him and the receiver. Plus, the call came from the back official who was so out of position to make that call it was rediculous.

  196. d1島: October 6, 2008 7:11 pm

    Wow.

Missed the Coach Mack Show last night.
Just saw the Michael Washington segment….chicken skin.
I don’t understand how anyone can consider taking a dime away from athletics in the schools knowing that somewhere there’s another Michael Washington out there whose only shot is with athletics.
Thru all the euphoria of this last game it’s amazingly clear to me what the real value of the endeavor these young men are fighting for – it’s literally life and death for some.

  197. madeinhawaii October 6, 2008 7:38 pm

Heart of a Warrior segment by Liz Chun is truly an eye-opener for many of us that do not know the background of players and their motivation to do well.

Did I hear Liz correctly that he got his speech degree in 3 years? If true, that is some ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!

Michael, if you read this post, please reconsider your decision about wearing the 2007 WAC Championship ring as you are as deserving as any other player on that most special team. It is a symbol of all the time practicing, working out in the weight room, running, reviewing tapes, going to class, etc. It signifies a team accomplishment which only a few can display in their life time.

Every student athlete has a story. Some are heart warming, some disheartening and some just plain rip your heart out. The real world can open one’s eyes or blacken them with a swift hit harder than any linebacker can inflict. Stories like Michael Washington’s put it all in perspective. Student athletes; young men and women trying to get an education while trying to represent their school doing something they love. Athletes living life through positive actions.

People should think twice the next time they feel like booing a student athlete; a Michael Washington; a young man with a story.

  203. whitey October 6, 2008 8:19 pm

Kazz and Jason, well done. Keep those names on your record and see if they officiate anymore UH games in the future. They should be banned from officiating any UH games and UH should file a formal complaint about this crew. I think JD has the authority to file the complaint with the WAC Commissioner.

  204. Kazz October 6, 2008 8:21 pm

    Haka,

It wouldn’t matter for those that boo student athletes if they saw or know of a story like Michael Washington’s one..

    People that boo student athletes:

-Have ONLY monetary interests on the game.

    OR

-Have never played a team sport in their life or can’t remember what it was like to hear that kind of trash when they needed REAL support.

    OR….

I forgot to add that the playful booing of the visiting team as they run out is one thing and while I don’t have the energy for it, (with Fresno State as the exception… oh and the way SJSU ran out on OUR field) I can tell the difference between “booing” the opposing team and just plain out putting down your own home team.

iwonderwhyiLuvbeingwrong — Hi. I see your post #138 about the security around the coach.

My first impression was that it was high muckity-muck pretentious. But when you see a lot of the larger programs with its high stakes and large fan base…the fan base being unpredictable… I can see the security escort. To protect the coach from unhappy crazy fans more than to keep reporters away 🙂

But I don’t see Mac with an escort…not Hawaii-style. We take care of our own. Mainland road game, maybe–protect our coach from crazies– but not in Hawaii. My opinion anyway.

All roughing penalties are called by the referee. The phantom pass int against Mouton was from the back judge. I noted only one flag (holding) from the umpire and the other 5 or 6 flags in the game came from one guy: the line judge Dave Nesmith.

EXACTLY… prior to Saturday’s game the WAC had WAAYYYY more to loose if Fresno State lost to Hawaii…

POOOF… there goes their “dream match”.

BTW, I too don’t think much into “conspiracies”, but I do know how business works and a lot of the times things that the decision makers deem “good for business” are not always fair and level-fielded decisions.

  229. Kazz October 6, 2008 10:46 pm

    Haka,

Our game with Boise State was a clean game.

Either way the WAC had a Friday night post-Thanksgiving game featuring two ranked teams with one on the way to the BCS as long as they kept winning (US), and another would COULD leap in the polls and make history as a one loss non-BCS team making a BCS bowl.

This year…. the WAC NEEDED this 2008 “dream match” and whoever won would have made it 3 in a row for the WAC in crashing the BCS party…

Now, Boise State could still do it, but their dream match doesn’t seem to have as much “flare” to it now with FSU sporting a loss in conference play and dropping off the TOP 25… whereas last season both we and Boise State were lookin’ pretty good up to the “BIGGEST GAME IN WAC HISTORY”.

    Again, not a conspiracy, but it’s business I guess… 🙄

Yeah it is sad and while those boo-birds have the right to do what they want because they paid to get in, that doesn’t mean they are right in trying to justify their pitiful behavior.

We do have to cheer LOUDER than those loosers and just keep the positive vibes going because fans like you, me and the people on this blog have a lot of heart for this program and while it may seem the REAL fans are smaller in #s as the bandwagoners and haters at times, the fact that we TRULY respect and love this program will out-weigh the lukewarm feelings of people that really don’t matter in the long run.

Maybe it’s not a conspiracy as more a method of control When you’re playing in a hostile environment, you need to stop the visiting team from making infractions fast and keep them under control so that nothing gets out of hand. Even more so when it’s a rivalry with a ‘do or die’ type build-up going into the game. There was a lot of jersey tugging and what looked like near eruptions that had the referees leaping over players to break up.

This week it’s LaTech. On the road LaTech always gives Hawaii a run for it’s money. At home, Hawaii has traditionally put LaTech to bed …(it’s usually a few hours past their bedtime, anyway. That helps!) The LaTech O-line may be their weakness, I look for Mack to test their limits early in the game with multiple blitz packages. LaTech defense has been better in the past few years and I believe they return a good number of players there. They’re best pass rusher is out, but they were good at man-to-man and zone coverages last year and I expect no less this year, as well. But, if the Warriors can unhinge their Offense early, then their game will collapse as it did against Boise.

The Warriors may need to study all the redzone tapes of the past two seasons to polish their redzone plays. Mullen and Bess made it all look too effortless. But, the Warriors may have to run it in against the Tech, anyway.

I say, with the momentum of the Fresno game at their back and the fans at home, the Warriors will put up pretty big numbers against LaTech this year. The scrambling of Inoke will wear the Techsters down by the middle of the third quarter.

    Pomai… my pik…

    UH 47 – 23

Kazz- so- defending WAC Champs don’t have a chance to crash any parties this year- even if we clear the rest of the table???

With the way things look we probably will end up being ranked if we go 10-3 from here on in, but unless BY—-WHO and UTAH fall flat on their face, we probably would float somewhere between the 18-25th spots…. 15 if we’re lucky.

Again those pesky human voters cannot be relied on…

  241. Hoohiki October 6, 2008 11:20 pm

“After 33 years and 11 tries, UH finally won on the road over a ranked opponent.” It doesn’t seem to add up…that means we only attempted to play a ranked opponent on the road every three years? That doesn’t make sense, because how many times did we play BYU in the WAC and Boise on the road when they were ranked? I would’ve guessed we played more ranked teams on the road. Can someone justify the 11 tries?

    hoohiki,

i dont think boise st and byu were ranked every single year we played them…not to mention they were mostly home and home off course so they have been ranked while we played them here etc etc…off course this is only a guess.

    once again, I post,

    Alone Again (Naturally)

In a little while from now,
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
    And visit a nearby tower,
    And climbing to the top,
    Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
    Where people ‘re saying,
“My God that’s tough, she stood him up!
    No point in us remaining.
    May as well go home.”
As I did on my own,
    Alone again, naturally

  255. al October 7, 2008 1:41 am

Congrats to Big Mack and the Warriors on a job well done, winning in overtime and also winning a ranked team on the road. I never knew dog could taste so good! Or was that cow-ding? (Goat)
