From today’s practice:

• Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga (sprained right ankle) was able to participate in conditioning drills, but he did not practice. Still, expect Meatoga, who was limited to five plays against Louisiana Tech, to be ready for Saturday’s Fresno State game.

• Rocky Savaiigaea is expected to start at defensive left tackle.

• Jovonte Taylor has overcome a sprained ankle. He took most of the reps as the No. 1 right wideout. Expect Taylor and Royce Pollard to split the position.

• After posting the highest score among defensive backs against LA Tech, Tank Hopkins has won — for now — the left cornerback’s job.

• Against LA Tech, defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga posted the highest score among the UH defensive linemen in the past two seasons.

Here’s Mana Lolotai and family:

And in men’s volleyball updates:

• Jonas Umlauft, the 6-foot-9 opposite attacker from Germany, completed the mile in 5:35 yesterday.

• Ernie Vidinha, who did not play last season, has rejoined the team as an outside hitter.

    Morning all!

  2. madeinhawaii October 6, 2009 7:54 am

Q: Moniz? Are you ready? Who are you going to dedicate your first touchdown to? Your first game? Your first win?

    Good luck!

  3. Stretch October 6, 2009 7:58 am

Thanks for joining the Tsaikos today.

Starting the season as the No 3 QB, did you honestly think you would have an opportunity to play this season??

  4. chopsueyboy October 6, 2009 7:58 am

Good Morning Tsaikos everywhere in our universe!

  5. bstunna2002 October 6, 2009 8:08 am

Wassup Mo it’s Bryson just wanted to say Good Luck vs Fresno, Do you anticipate Fresno to blitz alot on D and if they do will the offense be able to make the necessary adjustments?

  6. chawan_cut October 6, 2009 8:09 am

    Bryant,
Do you have a nickname you want to be called by?

  7. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 6, 2009 8:12 am

Alright! Looking forward to today’s show!

  8. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 6, 2009 8:14 am

Bryant- Thanks for stepping up and into your job! How did you develop your cool and calm demeanor?

  9. Slugger October 6, 2009 8:15 am

    Oy! Oy! Oy! oops… wrong chant… :))

  10. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 6, 2009 8:15 am

Bryant- When did you know you wanted to be a football player, and when did you know you wanted to be a QB?

  11. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 6, 2009 8:16 am

Bryant: When you think of your coaches, does one in particular stand out because of something they brought out in you?

  12. Dark Murano October 6, 2009 8:17 am

After watching “the suppose improved Offensive line” giving up eleven sacks in that embaressment National television game against LA Tech (seven in the previous game against Las Vegas game), the Warriors in danger of losing the backup Quarterback against Fresno State.
Fresno State strong defensive line will go through the Warrior “revolving door” offensive line and chase Moniz throughout the game. This means they will utilized the run more. But the Warriors has no running game. LWJ is a failure, as well as the others.
Unfortunately, Fresno State will literally run over the Warriors this Saturday. I’ll be there cheering for our Warriors but reality tells me it will be a very ugly night for my Warriors.

  13. LizKauai (WARRIORS- IMUA!) October 6, 2009 8:17 am

Bryant- Is there a particular QB that you admire and/or emulate?

Ok- HiHo and see you at lunch!

  14. Maverick October 6, 2009 8:19 am

Would be interested to view video of both Hawaii & Fresno’s day by day practices this week and compare

    Who has the intensity?

Is Ryan Matthews doing multi 100 yd sprints AFTER practice?
Is Alex Green and Leon Jackson trying to show the coaches that the running game is capable ?

This can go on, and on, and on….

  15. whitey October 6, 2009 8:19 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

  16. whitey October 6, 2009 8:21 am

We may have seen the last of Coach Mike Sanford, UNLV. Right now, he is on the hot seat with UNLV President and on a game by game evaluation.

  17. whitey October 6, 2009 8:22 am

Also Coach Bowden may be in his last season as the Board of Trustees want him to retire after this season.

  18. whitey October 6, 2009 8:23 am

Coach Bowder, hc for Florida State.

  19. whitey October 6, 2009 8:29 am

UNLV’s loss to UNR, 63-28, is creating a major uproar with the fans. Of course Sanford’s record of 13-39 is not helping either. I think there are other factors, but this is what UNLV is releasing right now.

In Bowden’s case, it is a matter of he designating a successor after the 2006 season and giving the successor more input. The successor is not having much input, but apparently he is being blamed for the downslide of FSU. The trustees are not happy about it and blame Bowden for this situation.

  20. Diogenes Sinope October 6, 2009 8:31 am

    Aloha Tsaikos!

    Top 20? Top 25?

Lot of Cassandras out there predicting gloom and destruction.

Why not wait and see what happens?

  21. whitey October 6, 2009 8:33 am

I hope Coach Pat Hill doesn’t get the axe after losing to our warriors this weekend. However you see him, he is a true supporter of all WAC football teams and believe that the WAC is a very good conference. You don’t see him campaigning to join the Mountain West like Boise.

  22. (Jesse) James October 6, 2009 8:34 am

Good morning Tsaikos…woo hoo, Top 25….

  23. ProudUSARWife October 6, 2009 8:35 am

Good luck Saturday, Bryant! We’ll be rooting for you! Hang tough.

  24. whitey October 6, 2009 8:35 am

Diogenes, no prediction, just saying what is written in this morning news of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

  25. (Jesse) James October 6, 2009 8:35 am

No time to really catch the show today….doing some moving of office stuff. Lucky we have A/C.

Just wanted to tell Bryan that we support him in his role as the leader of our offense. He can do it. Just make your reads and play ball baby!!!! Lead us to the promised land!!!

Rising up in the depth as you have, what are you now focusing on improving the most in your game as you prepare to start this weekend?

  29. d1島 October 6, 2009 8:49 am

    Bryant Moniz

What schools recruited you coming out of high school?

What were your reasons for attending Fresno City College?

  35. madeinhawaii October 6, 2009 9:03 am

Q: Moniz? Is there a certain play or two you remember from high school that you wish they would throw into the mix at UH?

  36. Pomai October 6, 2009 9:03 am

    Bryant,

Would you want to run another type of offense?

  37. madeinhawaii October 6, 2009 9:04 am

Q: Are there any players on the Fresno roster that you played with/against while at Fresno City College?

  38. Slugger October 6, 2009 9:04 am

    Aloha, Bryant!

I’ve watched you at practices. Maika’i! What do you think you need more: learning & getting the playbook down, or just the physical reps to execute the plays?

  39. d1島 October 6, 2009 9:06 am

What do you look for early in a game that tells you it’s going to be a “good night”?

what did you enjoy the most growing up in Wahiawa?

  42. homey ℞ October 6, 2009 9:12 am

chawan – We called Bryant “Mo”.

What’s up “MO” This is Bryce R’s dad. Bryce is excited for you and we’ll be at the game supporting you all the way! So I guess baseball is definitely not in your future. LOL And like you said, have fun out there.

  43. protector October 6, 2009 9:15 am

    Query to Bryant Moniz :

On your first practice as # 1 QB, how did you feel the timing & communication was between yourself & the 1st string receivers??

Regardless of your answer, I want to let you know I have full confidence that you’re going to give the Bulldogs fits! They know that UH will give a good effort because they figure UH will want to redeem themselves for the embarassment on national TV. What they don’t know is how good you are bruddah–they won’t know what hit them!

  44. (Jesse) James October 6, 2009 9:16 am

Before I forget….just a note from the Grillin’ Brew Crew for this week’s T-gate. We will be there around 9:30 a.m. If you have anything to cook on the grill, please bring those items prior to 1:30 p.m. so that we can finish cooking those items and clean up while still having time to be merry and mingle…MWAHAHAHAHAHA.

    Bryant Moniz :
How much did the long travel schedule effect the team in LA Tech?

  49. protector October 6, 2009 9:26 am

    Reply to Dark Murano :

Although there are no guarantees in life, I think the adjustments that coaches & players make will prevent the same thing happening here in Halawa that happened at Ruston. For one thing, Moniz is much more elusive & mobile than GA ever was & even the coaches say he goes through the progressions quickly. I hope others beside myself noticed this, but GA started to throw more & more (esp. in the last couple of games) to his favorite targets who often were double & in at least one occasion triple-covered=I don’t see Moniz making that same mistake.

  50. kama krab October 6, 2009 9:27 am

WHITEY: My comments were not aimed at the unofficial Mayor of Maui!

More towards people who are bashing the team, predicting destruction of our QB and line.

Undoubtedly our line needs to improve but bashing them doesn’t make improvements. I don’t know if the commentator ever played football or whether his experience is strictly in the stands, but if somewhat like PRIDE made such comments, I would consider the source.

    GREAT INTERVIEW!!!
Love Bryant’s spirit. Personally humble but the heart of a safety- gonna MAKE things happen on the field.

I think he’s gonna make a good starter. Some guys can be a “rescue guy” but get overwhelmed with the starting responsibility day in and day out. Bryant’s attitude is going to help the Warriors get in good shape energy-wise… just gotta get those X’s and O’s and conditioning up. Conditioning in this humidity and atmosphere will be extra effective for a good gameday.

oh yeah and no forget this friday’s alumni match 🙂

  70. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 6, 2009 11:50 am

Once again the car is in the shop and I have to wait around to pick it up so I am not doing my normal Tuesday work thing.

According to Stephen after I asked a similar question last week, Herman Frazier scheduled the first two away non-conference games and the decision to move the LaTech game to Wednesday was Karl Benson’s.

It’s interesting to go back to reading the posts prior to that game – many people here were excited about the national exposure and assumed that the game would be challenging but highly competitive.

The Washington State/UNLV back-2-back bookings made sensev to me from a direct financial point-of-view as well as getting the team acclimated to the weather & the time shift. There was also a major opportunity for the coaches to meet up with potential recruits as well as with alumni who live on the West Coast.

As for the LaTech game, the team did return for a few days before heading back to the Big Big Island, but would it have turned out any different if it had been scheduled on Saturday, October 3? No way to tell.

As for those of you who argue that the State of Hawai`i should step in to upgrade UH athletic programs, let me repeat what I posted several days ago. I spend probably 300 workhours a year going over the state budget as part of my job and attend dozens of hearings, briefings, and meetings where the inflow and outgo of tax money is the only item on the agenda. I may not really understand the details of football, but public funding issues I do. Money designated for one project cannot be shifted to another.

The primary way to get the kind of money to make significant improvements in the athletic programs at UH is from the private sector via rich alumni & community leaders who will leave their money to UH such as Clarence T.C. Ching; from businesses which will profit from people coming to Hawai`i to see the game or match or tournament and then spend time & money in beautiful Hawai`i before & after the sporting event(s); and, finally from businesses such as Costco which do very well in Hawai`i or who are interested in developing a new kind of business here in Hawai`i such as solar energy research or biotech stuff.

We cannot compete against Stanford or USC or Notre Dame or BYU because UH is a publicly-funded land grant institution; however, there is no reason in the world why we cannot do as well as UCLA or UDub or Ohio State or Nebraska or UTexas or Tennessee.

What is needed is to strengthen the connections between the academic and the athletic aspects of higher education – and we have someone who is already doing that – Virginia Hinshaw.

Meanwhile, how many regulars on this blog are graduates of the University of Hawai`i? Of that number, how many are members of the UH Alumni Association? The best way that these connections will be strengthened is for UH grads who are passionate about intercollegiate sports to take on a leadership role in the UHAA. The Letterwinners Club cannot do it by themselves.

If we want to improve the athletic programs at UH over the next 10 -15 years, then it’s time to walk the walk – expecting someone else to do something is not going to achieve very much.

Don Weir is new to his job, but his work will include – as it will for folks working for Koa Anuenue and in the sports marketing department – going after major private sector individual donors who will leave huge chunks of change in their wills to UH sports endowment funds. Or convincing major corporate donors who will expect to have the naming rights to facilities as well as to tournaments or bowls in exchange for their financial contributions to step up and write really big checks.

The rest of us can buy logowear and tickets and food at the concession stands and join the booster clubs and contribute to special fund drives and get envolved with the UHAA and the University of Hawai`i Foundation – they also have a board of directors – and make sure that the players in all sports know how much we appreciate their efforts.

Normally, I don’t react much when I read stuff here that disses players, but the negative comments made about Greg Alexander in yesterday’s blog really torked me off. What is he – maybe 22? And his life is upended in ways most of us will never experience no matter if we live to be 92.

Car repair guys just called – gotta go. Back late tonight now that the work gremlins are calling.

  71. Pride. October 6, 2009 11:52 am

I guess it’s true that Rush Limbaugh is trying to buy a portion of the St. Louis Rams. Whether or not he is allowed to buy it is another story though. If such a purchase is indeed allowed and comes to fruition, I wonder if what kind of role June Jones would play. Rush is a pretty close friend of June I am told.

  73. madeinhawaii October 6, 2009 12:00 pm

Moniz also confirmed my thoughts that the events in Samoa really sat heavy on the minds of our players going into the LaTech game. Listless…a bit heavy hearted and heavy footed? …. It’s kind of understandable.

  74. Pride. October 6, 2009 12:06 pm

Congratulations to Tuika Tufaga DT, and Tank Hopkins CB, for their outstanding play against LT. Do it again versus the Fresno Bulldogs!

  78. Loa October 6, 2009 12:16 pm

Stephen – i think someone should do a feature story for Friday’s match 😆

  79. Garret October 6, 2009 12:21 pm

I’m glad that the U-Dub deal is signed and the dates of the games are set.

The games are scheduled for Dec. 7, 2013 in Honolulu and Sept. 19, 2015 in Seattle, Wash.

  80. Garret October 6, 2009 12:23 pm

UH desperately needed their DTs to step up due to injuries and inexperience, and Tufaga did a *great* job in the La Tech game. He’ll be needed to be just as good or even better against Fresno State, and it would help if Meatoga was fully recovered from his injury.

  81. 2left October 6, 2009 12:23 pm

How is it that Tufaga turns in the highest grade at DL in the past two years, and UH turns in one of its most miserable performances against the run in the past two years? At DT, he’s holding the line of attack. Was everyone else that bad?

  82. d1島 October 6, 2009 12:25 pm

Couldn’t watch the whole show but what I saw was great.

Congrats to Tuika Tufaga for his game play. Kind of makes the point that it is a team game; even with the highest score in 2 years, he couldn’t stop LaTech alone.

  83. Garret October 6, 2009 12:26 pm

Season ticket sales in 2013 should be excellent–UH really has a good home lineup for nonconference games that year. With all 4 of these high-profile nonconference games scheduled for home games (plus I would assume another D-IAA team for another home game), it looks like UH currently will have no nonconference road games in 2013. With UH scheduling home-and-home deals, does that mean that UH will have 3 or 4 nonconference road games in some other season?

I figured that the 2013 game with U-Dub would be a road game and the 2015 U-Dub game would be at Aloha Stadium, but this press release makes it clear that it not the case. If UH has 3 or 4 nonconference road games in some other season, that will really be a tough travel year.

With this announcement, the 2013 schedule includes home games against USC, Brigham Young, Army, and Washington.

  84. Committed Road Warrior October 6, 2009 12:27 pm

So with the dates for the Washington home-and-home confirmed, it looks like there’s a possibility of having NINE home games on the 2013 schedule, especially if they fill the last slot with an FCS/1-AA team.

    Interesting.

  85. d1島 October 6, 2009 12:27 pm

It’ll be good to have Savaiigaea and Meatoga back in the rotation.

  86. Garret October 6, 2009 12:29 pm

I got to take a break and watch the WB show–Moniz was a good guest, and great booking to get home as the guest before his first start at QB.

The video seems more blurry than normal and my computer froze a little around the time of Loa’s question, but ST/Princess/Moniz did a good job.

  87. Garret October 6, 2009 12:32 pm

    CRW,

It does seem that UH will have *9* home games in 2013. With all but the D-IAA team part of a home-and-home deal, and with the WAC having 4 home and 4 road games, it would seem that UH will have 6 or even 5 home games in a future season…or maybe a bunch of years with 7 home games to make up for the imbalance in 2013.

It is hard to flip a scheduled home games to a road game because some teams might have scheduled 13 games in years when they play at UH.

  88. d1島 October 6, 2009 12:33 pm

IMHO the most intriguing thing about that ’13 schedule is who will be leading the team and how long will he have been the HC at UH when they kick-off the season? 0 years or 5?

  89. Committed Road Warrior October 6, 2009 12:38 pm

    Garret:

I was thinking that too regarding the number of non-conference road games in other years. But as you noted above, the 2013 home lineup is going to be REALLY good, and that should hopefully translate into season ticket sales.

Not only would UH have the non-conference lineup as already stated, but Boise and Fresno would also be making trips to Aloha Stadium. Assuming those squads can maintain some semblance of their current self (and BSU stays in the WAC, I might add…..), 2013 is going to be really good.

  90. Garret October 6, 2009 12:40 pm

I assume that JD inserted the $500k cancellation clause that he’s put in the other game contracts that he scheduled as AD. U-Dub just canceled their games against BYU in 2011 and 2012.

Brigham Young University Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe announced today that the University of Washington has exercised an option to opt out of football games with the Cougars in 2011 and 2012.

  91. Kazz (T-H-R-E-E more for Coach Shoji) October 6, 2009 12:40 pm

Win or lose, the effort put forth on the field this Saturday will say A LOT about the spirit of our Warriors and the effort put forth by our coaching staff going forward into the rest of the season.

    d1shima,

I didn’t realize that until you mentioned it…that is the first year after Mac’s current contract runs out.

RUN BLITZ AND RUN BLITZ HARD!!!!!

If we have to give up some big yardage off the play action from FSU then so be it. FSU’s QB ain’t so great and if they wanna play the pass game then let them.

Would like to see either M. Silva or S. Smith jump in off a safety blitz off a 46 formation against the run. 😎

  97. Stephen Tsai October 6, 2009 12:48 pm

Leila used to do color for UH soccer. She hasn’t done it for several years.

  98. Loa October 6, 2009 12:49 pm

hmmmm, so one of this years redshirt freshman qb’s might be running the show in 2013

  99. WarriorMojo October 6, 2009 12:50 pm

Kazz, that wasn’t Princess Leila. That was Jessica Domingo. I also took notice of her commentary. She was excellent!

  100. (Jesse) James October 6, 2009 12:55 pm

Kazz and Warrior Mojo…yeah, I thought that was the Princess as well doing the color when I first heard her. Then the showed Jessica Domingo doing the color so I was wrong as well.

Oh! It sounded like Leila, but anyway I didn’t watch too much of the replay since I went to the game earlier in the day… Besides, the guy doing “play by play” sounded like Jason Tang and that was the nail in the coffin… Not a fan… Not a fan… But I guess with the whole KHNL/KGMB/K-5 thing I guess John Fink won’t be doing the soccer games anymore.

The best zappers are the ones that look like lanterns.
But, for some reason, the cord is about 3 inches.

  107. Stephen Tsai October 6, 2009 1:25 pm

John Fink will still run K5, so he’ll probably continue to do UH soccer.

Haka or not to Haka, that is the question for the 2009 Warrior team as we are 1/3 into the season?

IMHO, a decision by Coach Mack to “make it happen” may do wonders for fan support for the remaining games including those on the mainland.

    Homey:

are you sure that Mrs A-House took the fly swatter away from you?

  118. Pride. October 6, 2009 2:21 pm

I believe that the Warriors will get better. More than anything, what the players needed was to get away from football and each other for a little while. It was evident at the last game that the players were exhausted and had “tired legs”. When you’re tired you play high, when you’re high you make contact high, with no leverage. Ball carriers have a tendency to run right through defenders who play high and don’t bring their legs under them. You tend play high after a long, long, road trip like the Warriors experienced.

A-House – If I recall correctly, yes she did. Whatever the case may be, I was not allowed to zap myself anymore.

I find it interesting that the blog host was still in great shape after the long trip. Doesn’t seem like he experienced any “tired legs”. He also didn’t take any days off, even though it was a long road trip for him too.

Average points per game scored by the offense and given up by the defense. Of course, just like your ratios in accounting, numbers don’t mean anything until you say, “as compared to what”? Just posting numbers here for whoever wants to evaluate and make comments, they can go ahead and do so. 2009 numbers are of course only for the first four games. I know that we have yet to go up against the meat of the schedule so need take those numbers with a grain of salt.

I think that it is GREAT that UH is doing this.

The University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department will support “Operation Uplift” during the Warriors’ football game against Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 5:05 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. “Operation Uplift” is part of a statewide campaign to help support the relief efforts in American Samoa.

Prior to the football game, student-athletes from the UH baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s basketball teams will be at the stadium gates accepting donations on behalf of the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts.

Major General Robert Lee, the State’s adjutant general and director of State Civil Defense, led an effort to get Oceanic Time Warner Cable to make arrangements to have a special video feed of the UH-Fresno State telecast available throughout American Samoa.

“We are supportive of the relief efforts and feel for those involved in this disaster.” Norman Santos, Oceanic Time Warner Cable vice president, said. “Hopefully, this game presentation will bring some relaxation and relief from this unfortunate situation.”

“It’s very important that we come together as an ‘ohana and support those affected by these recent natural disasters,” Jim Donovan, UH athletics director, said. “We’ll work together with the Governor’s Office, State Civil Defense, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Aloha Stadium, the American Red Cross, and a wide array of volunteers to help make ‘Operation Uplift’ a success.”</b.

Next time you see Charlie can u please try to find out what the fall schedule is like for them.

Also would appreciate some recruiting info, have heard that some very BIGTIME bluechip players were considering commiting to play for Coach Wade. Hope that it is true.

  136. Garret October 6, 2009 3:54 pm

Looks like even Pac-10 teams are offering up to $1 million for home games against D-IA schools that do not require a road game in return. Interesting to compare the cost of D-IA vs. D-IAA home games. Idaho got $600k for playing at U-Dub this year and can get up to $1 million in future years if they want to sell a home game to U-Dub.

An FCS school won’t demand a return game and they are more than happy to play for a decreased share of the revenue generated by the game. The difference can be as much as $750,000 compared to scheduling an Idaho which isn’t a drop in the bucket these days.

Eastern Washington or Portland State would be thrilled to have a $250,000 payday. The price to get Idaho into Husky stadium this season was $600,000. The current price for a future game is now between $750,000 to $1,000,000.

Yes, I agree Moniz was a good interview. Comes across as a good story in progress. Let us all be reminded however that Inoke too is a good guy. He too has a feel good story that had us all captivated for a few moments last year. It’s still the game of football, and Moniz needs to go out there and win. Doing “good things” is ok, but the fan base is too impatient to support the QB if the team is loosing. No matter how nice a guy he is.

Right on Moniz. All you gotta do is win.

  143. WarriorMojo October 6, 2009 4:32 pm

BIK, you make good points about Inoke. He is an awesome athlete and an even more awesome person. But I gotta disagree with you about one thing. SOME — not all — of the fan base is too impatient to support a QB if the team is losing. There are many of us who are frustrated with how things are going, but who also understand that line between winning and losing is very thin and is usually not controllable by just one person.

In my opinion Moniz doesn’t have to win. He just has to play hard and play smart and show improvement from week to week. If everyone on the team focuses on improving his own performance, then the team’s overall performance will improve and the wins will come.

Heck, if he wasn’t , Bryant would of been yanked last week on those days off when the coaches were walk -a-about on the mainland recruiting.

This is a thinking man’s game that gets physical.

This was my first time back at WPSS for a Wahine soccer game in years.

From the last two games I went to (the home games vs SJSU and FSU) the attendance seems to be larger than I remember.

It’s deceiving on TV because the majority of the crowd is sitting on the same side as the main camera so you can’t see them.

Same thing tends to happen when you see men’s or women’s volleyball on TV.

People like to sit behind the team benches I guess…

With regards to Bryant Moniz starting his first NCAA FBS football game this Saturday, I think he really won’t have much pressure on him as opposed to the defense.

The talk on the town has been more so on the 350+ rushing yards allowed by our defense as opposed to the 0 TDs by our offense.

In reality one can argue that the offense no scoring should take the blame but the other hand screams “time of possession”…. The offense can’t score if they are not on the field.

Personally we’re gonna need to force Fresno State to throw TD for TD with us and that lies squarely on the defense. Shoot, if we yield 300+ yards rushing again, but force nothing but FGs I think that still puts us in a better position to win or make a real game out of it.

Blitz blitz, run BLITZ and for God’s sake make some F’N tackles!!! Dare I say, risk the big play action pass play, FSU is not Cincy.

    For our mainland Tsaikos:

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack 10/06/2009 Notes Part 1.

-Coach Mack says they’ve learned from the LaTech loss and the coaching staff has been working on it since last Friday and still gives credit to LaTech for their win.

-Coach Mack says the LaTech was a different running game than what they saw against UCA, WAZZU, and UNLV and says one problem is the lack of tackling the HB at the LOS and says they’ve been working at it during practice.

-Coach Mack talked to GA and GA’s mom following the surgery and the doctor says that the operation was successful and Alexander will be able to play football again after about a year of rehab. Coach Mack thinks GA has enough footage to be invited to an NFL camp in the future.

-Coach Mack says GA really wants to get his degree and is only focused on that and GA will go forward from there.

-Coach Mack says we were beat up on the ends and admits that Fonoti is not 100% and neither were Falemalu and Meatoga, but says that a few guys had a good game like J. Estes, Tank Hopkins and Tufaga, Coach says it’s hard to say that anyone had a good game against Tech considering how it played out, but says there were some good things and some bad things.

-Coach Mack confirms Moniz is still a walk on and that the coaching staff was “encouraging” him to get better and says he (Moniz) has so much of an upside that he’ll be fine and credits Coach Rolo for Moniz’s advancement. Coach Mack says Moniz is a soon-to-be schollie player and is a student of the game by putting time on the field and off the field in the film room.

-Coach Mack says “the game isn’t to big for him” with reference to Moniz’s style of play in the pocket. Coach Mack quotes Mouse Davis and says “some kids got it” and Coach Mack believes Moniz has “it”.

-Coach Mack agrees with Bobby C in that Ryan Matthews can be a starter in the NFL “now”. Coach Mack says we’re going to really need to gang tackle Matthews at the LOS to be successful on Saturday.

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack 10/06/2009 Notes Part 2

(back from commercial break at 6:47 HST)

-Bobby C reminds us that Fresno State is 2nd in the country in rushing and goes over the losses FSU suffered against top teams this season. Coach Mack says that Pat Hill does a good job playing physical football and Coach Mack says that this is going to be a real “fist fight” against FSU.

-Caller “Craig” asks Coach about how the defense wasn’t able to shed off their blocks real well and if we have a scout team well enough to replicate good running teams. Coach Mack says that usually when a team drops passes or misses tackles that you can attribute that to the mental game and Coach believes the fans will see a big difference this weekend against FSU and admits that it is the responsibility of the coaches to get the team ready. Caller asks about the defensive blitzes on us and if there is something our QB has to call an audible to prevent sacks. Coach Mack says the run and shoot is designed to prevent this and is “built” into the way the QB reads the blitz. Coach Mack says that the receivers didn’t just have a good game against LaTech.

    – “Johnny” asks Coach Mack about the recruiting trip the assistant coaches just took. Coach Mack says it went well but says the main focus is recruiting here in Hawaii. Coach Mack says when they were on their way to Ruston, it made $$$ sense to recruit while they were on the road. Coach Mack confirmed there is a HS QB visiting this weekend.

    – “Paul” asks Coach Mack about Fresno State’s receiver (Adjatutu?) and Coach Mack confirms they already know about him and they plan to really watch him this Saturday as he’s about 6’4″.

Call The Coach Show with Coach Mack Notes Part 3.

(back from commercial break at 7:00 PM HST)

-Bobby C reminds people that the NEW start time for WAC home games is now at 5pm instead of 6pm.

-Bobby C asked Coach Mack to elaborate on “Operation Uplift” Coach Mack says that the team had to fight adversity with regards to the Samoan tsunami and how 3/4 of the team was effected and says that the kids handled it decently for the most part. Coach Mack says then he went to Jim Donovan and asked if there is something UHAD could do to assist in the relief fund to the American Red Cross.

-“Carpenter/aka Dwight” asks Coach Mack a question I cannot even understand because he cannot turn down his freakin’ radio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn’t hear him compliment Coach Mack about the upswing in team discipline on the field from last season. Coach Mack says he is proud of his team as he acknowledges that Blaze and John Estes came up to him for permission to workout as a team. Coach Mack said he felt the team was worn down and needed a rest, but Coach Mack says it has brought out leadership and says they had a “great” practice today (10/06/2009).

-“Daryl” (another one who cannot turn his radio down!!!!!!!!!!) suggests to Coach Mack a QB option in the redzone and cites Colt and Funaki in the past. Coach Mack says that he (Daryl) has a good point. Coach Mack says that Coach Mack isn’t a QB option type player, but says now they can with Moniz and says the “Noke” will be used again. Coach Mack said he was concerned about running GA on an option play as GA is more north to south than east to west.

-“Jay” asks Coach Mack what kind of effect does a loss like the one against LaTech has on recruiting. Coach Mack says it has a “great” effect on recruiting because “anyone that saw us probably thinks they can start right away with us.” Coach Mack then says he was kidding bit, but still believes any exposure is good exposure as far as a televised game is concerned.

-Coach Mack says we held our own in the kicking game with a “freshman kicker” (JUCO??? 😯 ) and a freshman punter. Coach Mack says that Dunnachie has been good in directional punting away from good returners like he did against Tech. Coach Mack also credits Ryan Henry for already having more punt returning yards now that all of last season.

-“CJ” raps with Coach Mack. (I remember this guy from last season… 🙄 … 😆 …) CJ asks Coach Mack about the 1st and goal situations against UNLV and Tech and wonders if we have something specifically in store in the future for this. Coach Mack says that is indeed unacceptable when you leave points on the field. Coach Mack brings up the “I formation wrinkle” against Tech and how it didn’t work and says that too isn’t acceptable, but Coach says they cannot quit on things like that because we need to score TDs.

-“Pete” asks Coach about Geordon Hanohano. Coach Mack says he feels horrible about it and says he had this problem in HS where he had his (Hanohano) arms and legs filled with a “burning sensation” following a similar hit and Coach Mack says they are not going to take any chances with this injury. Coach Mack says it’s not a “stinger”, but they’ll be careful with him and his medical evaluation.

    Kazz- thanks for the scoops.

I agree- I could feel “it” emanating from Moniz. He seems to be the kind of humble guy who can hang out when he’s not the man and is ready to BE THE MAN when his number is called. He has that “no fear” edginess that Colt had… and that’s why I asked about past injuries. I believe the guys are going to follow his lead. And he is not taking any prisoners on Saturday.

(back from commercial at 7:20 HST)

-“Ben” tells Coach Mack that he misses that “super-sized” runningback like Keli’ikipi and Ilaoa. Coach Mack says Ilaoa is now a student assistant and completely understands what “Ben” is talking about. Coach Mack says that right now we’re still committed to throw the ball, but says that we need to take off some pressure off the QB, but says that they’ll be more running with the athletes at HB like Green and LWJ.

-Caller with a horrible blue tooth connections says something about the training table…… Apparently Bobby C heard it about how walk-ons cannot eat at the training table according to NCAA regulations. Coach Mack and Bobby C both think it’s “STUPID” (in Bobby C’s words). Coach Mack says that all the kids contribute to the program, but the rules are in place for the time being and that is one of the rules he’d like to see changed. Coach Mack says the funny thing is the walk-ons can eat with the schollie kids when they are on the road but cannot at the training table at home.

According to UH’s website, Masch graduated from high school in 2007.

He played at his JC in 2007 and 2008, so he hasn’t redshirted yet. Since he hasn’t played yet this season and hasn’t been mentioned in any practice reports with the top 2 units, and since he wasn’t invited to Fall camp, I have to guess that he’s either redshirting or off the team. Since we haven’t heard bad news about Masch, I’m guessing he’s redshirting. ST did mention that many of the players that were redshirting were not invited to Fall camp.

Thank you very much for the recap!

  183. Garret October 6, 2009 7:41 pm

Ferd wrote today that UH should create a trophy for the game with Fresno State, and in a big coincidence in the timing JJ just had a hand in creating a trophy for the winner of the games between SMU and Navy. That is an excellent team to play (I wish UH played them every year, though I hate the chop blocks) and the trophy honors a good man.

The SMU and Navy Athletic Departments today announced the creation of the Gansz Trophy, a traveling trophy to honor the late coaching legend Frank Gansz, which will be awarded to the winner of future SMU-Navy football games.

“Frank Gansz touched the lives of so many players and coaches in his lifetime, not just at SMU, but throughout the nation,” said SMU Head Coach June Jones. “The Frank Gansz Trophy is being established to honor Frank for his contributions to the game of football and to remember all the lives he touched along the way. We are excited that we are able to establish this trophy between the two schools he loved the most, Navy and SMU. We will play this 2009 game and all future ones between our two great schools in his honor.”

“Clearly, Coach Gansz was an influential coach and mentor to many,” said Navy Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo. “Since he was a Navy grad and coached at both schools, I think it’s appropriate that our two programs play for a trophy that honors him.”

  184. Garret October 6, 2009 7:57 pm

The Miami coaches said that Ted Ginn was their #1 receiver…then had him stand on the sidelines for most of the last game and Bess is now leading the Dolphins in receiver yards. Bess earned it though, the stats don’t lie.

Ginn: 30 passes thrown at him, he caught 14
Bess: 24 passes thrown at him, he caught 20 (this is really impressive, especially considering the QB could be off target and there are NFL DBs trying to stop him from catching the ball)

Ginn was thrown to only three times Sunday – the least amount the Dolphins have thrown to him in any game this season – and he caught only one pass for 4 yards. Ginn, the ninth overall pick for the team two years ago, has been determined to assert himself a deep threat, but, in the process, has been Miami’s least consistent receiver.

He has been thrown the ball more than any other Dolphins receiver (30 times) and has made only 14 of those catches. By comparison, Davone Bess, who has been targeted 24 times this year, has caught 20 of those balls for a team-high 157 yards. Ginn is second with 138 receiving yards.

The practices I went to during fall camp, I am 99.7% sure I saw Zach Masch in full pads and on the field.

A late decision to redshirt after camp perhaps or towards the end of camp?

High school students won the right to have a Q&A session with Jake Ingram.

Hart’s classmates at Franklin High, as well as groups from two other schools, also won a question-and-answer session with a rookie Patriots player. A group of about 20 students taped the session yesterday morning in front of The Hall at Patriot Place with rookie long snapper Jake Ingram.

Many of the students asked Ingram about his college football years at the University of Hawaii, and what it is like for him to live in the colder temperatures. An avid surfer, Ingram said he went surfing a few times at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire last summer and the water was much colder than he was used to.

  226. bighilofan2 October 7, 2009 2:26 am

good article on Tufaga in today’s HA.

which got me to thinking. coaching is all about getting the team’s headspace on right. motivating the coaches and players to put forth their best effort.

like for instance, take a nice young man. say this is his second year here. weight is still low, at least low, maybe a little low, maybe okay for his position, but definitely his body can handle a few more pound to make em pro size. imho coaches need to motivate the kid to do his best, helping him to be his best. little stuff makes a 2 star a 4 star

the difference between our program and the big programs imo is that everyone going to the big program is trying to be a pro body size, and some of our young men are not striving for that goal. i don’t want to post names, ecause its not nice to call out a student athlete.

but i would hope our coaches are thinking about these things, because i am. i hope we’re recruting young men with that work ethic. and coaching young men to develop that work ethic.

i no we’re way away in the middle of the pacific, but we’ve got a division 1 football team and sometimes we play on national tv. i would like to avoid another national tv debacle, and we’ve got some good tv exposure ahead in the years to come.

    Happy Birthday Mrs. A-House!

I’m happy that Da Beast gets to play this week…but I’m guessing his coach is even happier about that.

The Wildcats couldn’t stop Montana State’s running game. The Bobcats rushed for 210 yards and running back Aaron Mason averaged 6.3 yards per carry. It was a shocking performance, as Montana State hadn’t scored a rushing touchdown all season before scoring four touchdowns on the ground against the Wildcats.

Fortunately for Weber State, help is on the way.

Sophomore Ryan Eastman, a solid run-stuffer who’s been out of action since the Colorado State game, will be back in action against Eastern Washington.

“Eastman will be a big boost for us,” McBride said. “He’s an all-league guy. He’s a hustler. He’s been a real good player for us.”

The developers behind the City of Industry football stadium named the NFL teams they will be going after. In my opinion, this is all pretty much a smoke screen, as there is *one* team whose owners are close to the billionaire building the stadium…the Chargers. Roski built the Staples Center and got ownership stakes in the Lakers and LA Kings in return.

The developers who want to bring professional football back to the Los Angeles area said Tuesday that they’ll approach the San Diego Chargers and five other teams in February about moving as early as next season.

Semcken said new talks would begin after the Super Bowl in February, and may involve the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills, the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Rams, the Chargers and the Oakland Raiders.

The San Francisco 49ers could also be pursued if a vote for a new stadium in Santa Clara fails.

He did not say how big a stake his boss, billionaire Ed Roski Jr., would want in whatever team relocated. He also didn’t mention that unless Roski sells the Silverton hotel and casino he’s owned in Las Vegas since 1997 that the NFL won’t let Roski buy a team.

Roski is a friend of the Spanos family, which owns the Chargers. He was recently named the 236th richest American by Forbes magazine, with a net worth of $1.5 billion, and is a minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings and built the Staples Center where the Lakers play.

    Who wants a t-shirt?

Thanks Kazz for the notes to the Call the Coach Show-I only caught part of it.

Thanks also to ‘pride’ for the interesting Offens/Defens/Record stats. I was wondering how the heck the ’99 team was able to accomplish that 9-4 record with only a +1.7 point differential. That’s doing a lot with a little.Amazing!

I agree with LizKauai about getting a scholie for Bryant, but I’m sure it’s on the Coach’s to-do list in the coming year. BTW, I’m still bitter about the Men’s VB Championship take-away too. If I was a lawyer, I’d do pro-bono work to see what I could do for a number of foreign players who played for UH (and elsewhere) about being screwed out of playing time (remember Shimonovich & others?) with NCAA’s draconian rules dealing with foreigners who played in semi-pro leagues, but never took a penny. They got a raw deal simply because they were foreign players who they were trying to discourage from playing. Seems to me that all of the foreign players who came to play here were model citizens & great student-athletes, but they were discriminated against because of their nationality/citizenship. It just seems unfair, but perhaps foreign students don’t have constitutional protections here. Anybody know?

  245. gopuns October 7, 2009 11:45 am

whatever happened to mana lolotai. there were a bunch of articles on how good he was in camp and now he aint seein the field
i was excited to watch this guy play because i remember watching him just dominate when he was at kam
    that kid is a beast
he’s consistently one of the first ones down the field during the kickoff
even at kam he would just run over anybody in his way during kickoffs, it was like a movie

  246. gopuns October 7, 2009 11:46 am
