CB commits to UH; Ralph wins contest

Dee Maggitt, a cornerback from Lakes High in the Tacoma area, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors.

Maggitt said he is 5 feet 10 and 175 pounds. He said he not been timed in the 40-yard dash, although Scout.com listed him as covering the distance in 4.55 seconds.

Lakes head coach Dave Miller said Maggitt is the best corner he has seen in his 25 years with the school.

In last week’s Aloha Prep Bowl all-star game, Maggitt held All-State receiver Taz Stevenson without a reception.

Once again, our designated picker, Avis Yasumura, has selected the today’s contest winner. And it is … Ralph. He wins  a pair of tickets to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and a pair of  tickets to the Dec. 22 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.

Thanks, Ralph.

Thanks, Avis.

And thanks to all who played. Another contest is tomorrow.

Christmas came early to Central O‘ahu.

Quarterback Bryant Moniz, a 2007 Leilehua graduate, and long-snapper Luke Ingram, a 2008 Mililani graduate, have been told they will be placed on scholarship in January.

Moniz started eight games in place of Greg Alexander, who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Ingram, a second-year freshman, made every snap on special teams.

With nine players set to graduate Saturday, UH had cleared up enough scholarship room for mid-academic-year transfers. But, head coach Greg McMackin said, “Our first priority was to take care of our own. They deserve scholarships.”

Today is the first day junior-college players may sign binding national letters of intent.

The Warriors had received verbal commitments from three JC players, but only one — lineman London Sapolu of Orange Coast Community College — is expected to sign today.

Defensive end Siaki Cravens of Long Beach City College will sign in February, the first day of the spring signing period. Cravens will join the Warriors in June.

Cornerback Travaun Nixon of Ventura Community College committed to UH three weeks ago. Since then, he received an offer from Pac-10 schools, including USC.

Aiea defensive tackle Lawrence Lagafuaina, who made a verbal commitment to Washington last week, still is considering UH.

Happy birthday to this guy:

Does that mean Nixon has decommitted?

  6. Garret December 16, 2009 8:44 am

Does this mean that the recruits expected to enroll in January may not be coming? Hopefully UH is just spreading out the announcements to keep the good football news going for as long as possible…positive news about the team could help with recruiting and there is no bowl talk to discuss for the team.

  7. Garret December 16, 2009 8:45 am

    J-Dog,

Reading between the lines it appears that at the least Nixon’s commit is not that strong now.

You asked about what to do to prevent hamstring injuries on the last blog? Click on the link assoc. w/ my name. This is what Aaron Brown told me you have to do to prevent hammies. Since he was out this season with one, I hope he & the players I spoked with will remember to S-T-R-E-T-C-H!

Luke has a seat at the training table as well. Life is grand! Now he can fill out that Ingram frame and get thick. Run downfield and crush blockers and destroy punt returners!

Just a quick note about UH’s future in college sports. If some folks here are interested in taking an active role in making sure that good things happen – defined as doing a lot more more than making comments & suggestions for change in public spaces such as blogs – there are ways to learn the necessary skills to make changes occur that work for us. Please ask me for the references as well as the probable costs.

    Kekoa,
My apologies for being late on the reply to your request about WVB tickets in Tampa.
I asked around yesterday and found that UH does not receive any tickets for fans for the Final Four. This is an issue for the NCAA as they control the quotas and how they are distrbuted.
That being said I have a contact for you. Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’o hanohano is in Tampa at this time. She would be the contact that could possible locate some tickets.
She has a Blackberry with her and her e-mail address is
    monizkah@hawaii.edu
Please tell her (or have your friends tell her) that I sent you her way.
If anyone knows of kekoa’s direct e-mail or phone number please pass this message on as time is of the essence to locate Marilyn via e-mail and see if she has any ducats.
I will send her an e-mail to let her know to expect a request.

It sounds like Joshua Quezada still has UH as one of his top teams. It sounds like a choice between UH and Utah, since he doesn’t want to cut his hair for BYU and U-Dub only wants him at safety.

One of the schools he’s considering is Hawaii, which has a coaching staff that he trusts and some opportunities that are attractive to him.

“They’re only recruiting one other running back, so I think I could play right away there, which is something that is important to me,” said Quezada about Hawaii. “I also like that their coaching staff will be there for a while, definitely for the four years that I’ll be there. That’s something I like a lot.”

Quezada sports long hair much in the same style of Troy Polamalu from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s aware that to attend BYU he’ll have to cut his long hair, which is his main hang-up about signing with BYU.

“It’s definitely my big concern with signing with BYU,” he confirmed. “I’ve had long hair and I like having it, so cutting it won’t be easy and that is my main thing about BYU and why I may not go there. I love everything else about them and they’re definitely one of my favorites.”

Quezada’s big hang-up with Washington is that they’ve been clear that they have no plans for him to play his favored position, which is running back.

“They want me as a safety and if I decide that safety is where I need to play, then I’ll choose Washington,” he said.

Shoot. If the Big East goin expand and cause a ripple affect causing the other BCS conferences to expand, UH should make their case now for entry into PAC-10/12. If anything, the PAC-10 can bump Wazzu out and bring three teams (UH being one of them of course).

    Howzit Everybody,

    Gotta say,

This recruiting year has already been much more crazy and confusing then last year’s recruiting class and the funny thing is we are only in middle of December.

I am really hoping that some of our big fish decide to play for U.H. because if they do, we will have a very bright future.

We’ll just have to wait and see but I am hoping and praying for a big back out of California, CB’s from Oregan and Washington, that big boy from Washigton would be nice to, and last but not least some young men from the islands. This could turn out to be one big time class.

I guess my last wish would be “I need a secret Santa gift”.

  91. al December 16, 2009 1:33 pm

    final four…

not only are the rainbow wahine in the final four this week. apparently we are also in the final four of the running back.

we are in a heated competition with byu, utah, and udub. so far, udub may be bringing up the rear because they want him at safety and he wants to run.

byu’s policies are no long hair. a concern of his.

that may bring it down to hawaii and utah. if only we could draw the west coast of cali a bit closer.

his team mate is a solid commit, dominck sierra. he says it is down to the matter of the coaching staffs and how well he interacts with them.

somebody please send mack to la habra tonight if he hasn’t already left.

Travaun Nixon offered by USC. The question is…..will he play? For a JUCO player, you might be better off signing with Hawaii.

    Bigislandkurt,

You make a really good point, and USC normally does not go after JC players for that reason. However, I just looked up their depth chart and 3 of their 4 DB starters are seniors. That is probably why USC is looking to pick up a JC CB and why they might appeal to Nixon.

  98. Garret December 16, 2009 2:14 pm

    Note from WSN:

I live out in Ventura County and know a little bit about this guy. UH coaches had nothing to do with losing the kid.

Word on the street is that Coach Mack (Ventura College, no relation…) was lobbying USC hard to look at Travaun all year. He tries to get as many of his players into high profile CA programs as he can (as he should) to help bring better athletes to his program.

Great news about Maggitt! And it’s really cool that UH is still in the hunt for Quezada & Lagafuaina.

Let’s hope Nixon doesn’t leave. Though I understand cognitively that USC offers a great academic & athletic opportunity for him, emotionally & spiritually I’m screaming for him to “just say NO” to the dark-side. If he leaves, I’ll wish him luck but will fume for weeks to come. You all know what I think of the kids who say they are psyched to be Warriors, then hear that they confusedly de-committed to go elsewhere. That’s why I’m so appreciative to the players we have who really WANT to be here.

UH Warrior recruting guru of all gurus – did your wish for another CB meant for Maggit or he and another?

is this the Coach Mack “emergency recruiting” situation or something entirely different?

have you given up on Nixon or am I late again in news that he has de-committed and going elsewhere?

who is the “monster” OL from the PNW that people have alluded to – he’s like 6’7″, 310#s, HS senior – did he visit UH?

why am I always late on getting the news? i know, water does not flow uphill on our street. only place I know where lava goes uphill is on the Big Island.

Study found that staring at women’s breasts is good for men’s health and increases their life expectancy–10 minutes of staring is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out! The improved blood circulation and increased heart rate can cut the risk of stroke and heart attack in half and extend a man’s life 4 to 5 years.

no, i heard about dee and was wishing for that other cornerback. be patient.

no, this was not the emergency. the emergency recruiting issue is much larger that dee.

yes, it sounds like nixon prefers ten gallon vs lauhala. desert sand vs the sands of waikiki.

yes, i believe he was here already. an offer is pending and has not been tendered i think. his name is similar to that infamous makers of yeast.

slow, because you go sleep at 8:30 pm.

and finally, he hasn’t been timed so he could run a 5.7. but, he did blanket taz stevenson who allegedly ran 4.4’s. that is good enough for me.

I cannot believe that the medical study is being published in a prestigious medical journal. For the record, the study authors said that the staring was supposed to be at well-endowed women.

Concluding that 10 minutes of staring had the same health benefit as 30 minutes of exercise seems pretty odd to me…

Did Mack had to cancel because of an “emergency”, or was it because of a recruiting commitment like ST tweeted about. A recruiting commitment could be the home visits that Mack was rumored to give to 2 recruits on the North Shore that would be big, big recruits for the program.

FOXSports.com reported Henry was on life support, according to a source.

Henry was found in the road about eight miles north of downtown Charlotte “apparently suffering life-threatening injuries,” according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Police spokesman Robert Fey said officers were stationed near the 26-year-old Henry’s hospital room. He had no information on Henry’s condition, but said he was alive.

just uploaded adobe shockwave plug in and now my WB uploading is faster, or is this by chance. I’ve gotten notice that WB won’t upload because of javascript or a script is not available, or my flash player is out of date. Only on Ponyfans and youtube did I get a shockwave warning. I think MIH mentioned that microsoft plug in should be deleted to make the computer work more efficiently. Am I missing something. Getting a lot of freezes and stop responding of my apps.

The Royal Purple ladies of K State will play the Na Wahine in wbb this saturday in the Las Vegas tournament. Purple. Green. Purple. Green. And only last week I received my CD listing all registered alumni from K State, surprisingly there are a lot of Hawaii residents who graduated from there over the years still calling Hawaii home.

I like what Joe Theismann said about Bess.

(Slot receiver) Davone Bess has become what Wes Welker is for the Patriots.

I always thought that Chad Owens could have been a Wes Welker type for some NFL team that would have just given him a chance. I’m a littile bit disappointed that Jack Del Rio never really gave Chad a chance to be a wide receiver. But then again, knowing that the NFL is the NFL, most guys are lucky to even “get” a chance. Most who do get a chance, get only “one” chance.

Thought I’d share, for you Bobby Curran lovers….

UH Must Win The Recruiting Game
    By Bobby Curran
    Friday – December 16, 2009

‘Tis time to look to the future for University of Hawaii football. After suffering the disappointment of a Hawaii loss to Wisconsin in the season finale, the Warriors’ coaches and players will concentrate on the future.

The first concern is recruiting, where all success begins. It seem to be a talent-rich environment in the Islands, and UH will have its work cut out in trying to secure some of the top local talent.

The state of Hawaii is presently over-recruited; the Pac-10, Mountain West, Big 12, Big 10 and even the occasional SEC school are looking for players here.

When I hear complaints from some quarters about impact prospects getting away, I think these folks underestimate what Hawaii is up against. In many cases, Hawaii is lagging in facilities and amenities. Other times it’s that some schools offer particular academic fields that Hawaii doesn’t have.

The only thing that is inexcusable is for UH not to make an all-out effort to sell what the program it does have, which is a chance to play in front of friends and family, and to open doors in the future within the state.

Still, UH is never going to get everybody; some want to experience the Mainland and are committed to leaving. UH does do a good job keeping the door open to those who go away and become unhappy.

Offensive line and line-backers are needs the Warriors will try to address.

The coaches should be able to get everybody’s attention in the spring since UH opens with USC at home, followed by back-to-back road games at Army and Colorado. Both Boise State and Fresno State are on the road in 2010. That ought to be challenging. …

  242. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 1:51 am

    LizKauai,

I saw that comment from Quezada too.

  243. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 2:02 am

Mack seems to relish the role of lightning rod. the galvinizer. the other coaches backing him up. Quezada, from outta State, gave us some great info. rooting fo da man and our team.

    Go Warriors…

  244. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 2:53 am

    ST

GREAT article on Dee Maggitt. He is a great recruit for our program.

    Good job, coaches.

    And ST,

GREAT article on calling out the UH compliance officers. Always knew they were the holdup on everything. Not only do they feel their job to say no, they always say NO even when the right word should be YES.
thats the perception they give out about UH football. Look at the paperwork on getting the extra year because of medicals. Look at the Australia guy who grew grey hair during the time he was trying to transfer and enroll last year at UH.

if you don’t call Compliance on their do do and do nuttin, nothing gonna get done because no motivation no shame no time. before you no it, its 4:30 and time fo go home.

  245. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 2:57 am

and its always gonna be the same retort from those that are holding us back. next year. be nice. next time. pftttt… I wanna UH fo beat USC. Warriors who are working hard deserve our vocal support. and hard work from paid employees.

  246. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 3:08 am

I don’t fully understand why Siaki Cravens, who was at Utah and now in JC, is not coming in January. prolly because he is JUCO and gotta finish the year anyway?

anyway, best of luck to him.

    and a BIG WELCOME TO

DEE MAGGITT. brudda wants to be a Warrrior. yeee haaa!!!

his coach was all gushing on him. great for us.

  247. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 3:10 am

good read on Dee Maggitt’s high school coach. his philosophy. his desire to make his players better people. his focus is team, not talent.
good man. we’re getting a really great player in Dee Maggitt. take a look at the HA and this link.

  256. bighilofan2 December 17, 2009 3:32 am

A year ago the SeattleTimes reported that Chris Tormey might be the only asst coach that might be retained by Sarkisian. mention was made about another coach, Gervais, and his Skyline HS connections.

and this year we’re getting the benefit of Chris Tormey’s years of good work. He is a legend. and so is Gordy Shaw.

and so, thinking more about what Quezada said, I’d like to say

Good job Coach McMackin. keep it up. takes awhile. takes awhile.

  257. Kekoa (iPhone) December 17, 2009 3:35 am

    Eh Big Hilo!
Ralph beat us out for the tickets?! :schock:

So far I’m out a hula hoop, and a secret Santa gift. I didn’t enter the other ticket grabs. I hope ST offer season tickets to the UH games in 2010.

Then, a contest for the Army game tickets. That would help me cut my trip expense to West Point. If I win some tickets to the game in Boulder, CO on
the way back…I could stop off in LV and celebrate with Mr Las Vegas himself!

Now I know I’m dreaming!…shuffling back to bed.
See you all at W/Doc’s party this afternoon.

    Hi bhf2!

With Maggitt cheering, “Go Big DEE!” might have a little more meaning in the coming years.

  266. wafan December 17, 2009 4:12 am

Darn. Incorrect placement of a comma changed the entire meaning. It was supposed to be, “With Maggitt, cheering . . .”

RGM found out that the Miami Dolphins are interested in him so he’s not rushing to sign with his CFL team now.

Returner/receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen isn’t in a hurry to sign either, especially after learning he is one of two veterans on the Lions who have drawn preliminary interest from the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

The team which took Cam Wake off the Lions’ hands last season recently inquired about Grice-Mullen, though a workout date has not been finalized.

“It’s just talk going around right now,” said Grice-Mullen, who isn’t discounting his contract offer from the Lions.
