Moniz hopes for summer return

Quarterback Bryant Moniz said he expects to miss the rest of spring training, but hopes to rejoin the Warriors this summer. He has been on personal leave since April 8, and has not practiced nor worked out with the team since then.

Several volleyball Warriors  today passed out doughnuts to the fans in line to buy tickets for Saturday’s playoff match.

The View.

That might be one of the secrets to the basketball Rainbows’ recruiting success. Recruits are assigned the oceanside room of a Waikiki hotel. The view of the Pacific Ocean and Waikiki Beach, we’re told, is spectacular.

Congrats to Jack Flash and wife Sarah on the birth of their baby girl!!!

My wife Sarah gave birth to a healthy 8lb 10oz baby girl yesterday afternoon! We named her Evan Antonia. We’re thinking she’ll go by Evie. Still waiting for Tutu to give her her Hawaiian middle name. Yesterday was a great day!!!

anybody know about the wahine basketball recruits if any? coach Dana did a good job of bring the team together this past season but, you still need the horses to pull the wagon. i expect them to have at least an even record next season and a winning record in 2 years. also, how did the new mbb recruits do in yesterday’s california all star game? I know there is a lot of hype for the incoming freshmen but we shouldn’t expect too much too soon, as, although their videos looked real good, they were playing in the cali class 3 league. doesn’t Cali have as much as 5 classifications. if they are good enough to have playing time as freshmen, that would be good for them and UH. I know they will be great contributors in the future.

  17. A-House April 19, 2010 9:43 am

HO man, miss out on the donunts cause Midori7 ordered tickets via internet.

Will be there cheering on Saturday oh, wait is this Wahine SB senior nite too?

  18. haka April 19, 2010 9:47 am

Speaking of basketball recruits, any news on the guards that visited this weekend for the men’s team?

  19. A-House April 19, 2010 9:47 am

    Congrats Protector.

Senior Night for Wahine SB is May 1.

The SSC had better be packed and rockin’ on Saturday!

  25. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 10:00 am

One of the basketball players brought his mom, so I think there’s a good chance he could commit.
The other, I assume, will wait until after he goes home.

  26. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:00 am

    A-House,

Haka is correct in that the Wahine Softball team will bid “Aloha” to Kanani Pu’u-Warren, Katie Grimes, Amanda Tauali’i, and Traci Yoshikawa on Saturday at a double header against Fresno State starting at 4pm.

  27. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 10:01 am

Walker was hysterical. Because of his long hair, the UCSB fans were calling him: “Predator.”

  29. Jun Tao April 19, 2010 10:01 am

Props should go out to the Rainbow Wahine Softball team for “delivering the goods!” Even though I wasn’t at the stadium to support them, the Wahine didn’t shy away from performing in front of a capacity or near capacity crowd! Long balls were plentiful!

  30. chawan_cut April 19, 2010 10:03 am

dang. won’t be back for the mvb playoffs. the ssc should be rockin!

  31. chawan_cut April 19, 2010 10:06 am

i’m sure there’ll be enough presence by some of our faithful and their children to make up for the lack of my cheering on saturday.

  32. Stretch April 19, 2010 10:08 am

I think with the bigger crowds at the softball games, they need to add a few more workers at the concession. Those 2 workers were busting okole while the line remained long. I thought we were going to be in line for the whole game.

  33. NorthShoreFan April 19, 2010 10:22 am

    Guud Morn Tasikos…
Man the Tsaiko Ohana is getting bigger with all the new additions.
Conrats to Liz and Jack Flash…like Bulla said..make babies…make babies…..wait or was it memories…???……..(had to carry over)

Stretch…Guud recommendation…neva buy nothing cause line was too long…miss half da game if u wait in line…better use of personnel might help too…some was just standing around not taking order from customers

    “Sky Predator” = Alien?…

  34. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:24 am

    RE: 5th Wahine Senior.

Shoot ST! Good thing you mentioned it. She escapes our minds because she JUST transferred here this season and isn’t playing much because she’s behind Grimes in the “depth chart” at catcher.

    #11 TASHA PAGDILAO

I believe she was used as a pinch runner a few times this season and she did catch for Ricketts in the 2nd loss to CAL towards the last two innings.

… of interest to UH sports ….

“… Bank of Hawaii Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Al Landon plans to retire before the end of the year and will be replaced by

    President Peter Ho.

The bank made the announcement today in conjunction with the release of its first-quarter earnings, which soared 46 percent partly due to a net gain of $20 million from the sales of investment securities.

The state’s second-largest bank in terms of assets had earnings of $52.7 million, or $1.09 a share, compared with $36 million, or 75 cents a share, a year earlier. …”

    FYI

  37. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:30 am

    Stretch,

I knew already before the Friday game that they (softball concession workers) were gonna get killed. I “prepared” not to eat or drink anything on Friday night and then brought my own drink on Saturday. Plus, the leftovers from the t-gate courtesy of BG helped too!!! 😆

  38. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:32 am

I just realized, that was the first time I had gone all season without a bag or two of skittles.

Good thing the Wahine swept! 😉

  39. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:33 am

    #36.

At least no BS from BOH by admitting they are the 2nd largest bank in Hawaii.

  40. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:36 am

    ***Off topic***

I think pretty much EVERY other bank in Hawaii has WAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY better marketing departments than ours.

BOH recently released a GREAT commercial that got me thinking, “wow, if I had to chose a bank, this one sticks out”.

Tis a far better thing to see live people in commercials than #s and words that really don’t mean anything to the average person looking for a stable financial institution.

  41. A-House April 19, 2010 10:39 am

Thank you, thank you for keeping me straight and narrow and will mark down 5/1/10 – as a matter of fact, I asked Midori7 to mark it down on our home calendar so we can go eat boneless chicken with cake noodles at ON ON restaurant.

Mucho congrats to Jack and Mrs Flash and grandma LizK!!!

  42. A-House April 19, 2010 10:40 am

    Hi Chawan:

sorry you will be missing the VB game on Saturday.

maybe jm2375’s keed can shout for you, us, and everybody at the game!

  43. A-House April 19, 2010 10:41 am

    Stretch:

gotta agree that the fuud line was 2 long – I also stepped out so I would not miss the 2nd game – all it takes is better planning!!!

  44. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:45 am

A publication out of Louisiana said the Wahine played infront of the largest crowd all season at 1,017.

No doubt it was the largest and I’m not used to shoulder to shoulder contact with the person next to me at a softball game, but where the heck did they get that number? That exact number?

I didnt see our local publications posting an exact amount and the closest thing was Wes Nakama’s article which said “about 1000”.

  45. Slugger April 19, 2010 10:49 am

    Jack Flash,

Congratulations of the arrival of Evie!

I walked over to get my MVB tickets this morning.

  46. Kazz April 19, 2010 10:53 am

    Better planning?

    What does that look like?

  47. PONO April 19, 2010 10:59 am

    ST,
According to some blogs Shamburger committed to Portland. Wasn’t he one of the recruits that visited this past weekend?

    Papajoe,
The classification system in California is strictly based on school enrollment. Doesn’t necessarily correlate to the talent or skill level of the teams in the higher classifications but the thinking is that larger schools will have a larger talent pool and should put out better teams. I coach a varsity team that is a Div 2 team but our talent level sucks.

  48. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 11:01 am

    Kazz:
When you don’t charge admission, you can’t get an accurate attendance count.
Of course, for arena sports, you can’t get an accurate count, either.
    But I digress.
But there’s no way they counted the softball crowd. I guarantee that. They just threw out an estimate.

  49. A-House April 19, 2010 11:20 am

Truth be told that we witnessed the “largest” college softball crowd this year on Saturday night – even with the top 10 teams, how many go to see women softball?

    We made HISTORY!!!

Anyone know softball fan attendance at the regional and final 4 games last year?

  50. A-House April 19, 2010 11:22 am

    Pono:

yep, Shambarger was visiting this past weekend and he listed UH as one of his final teams – did we lose out to Portland? why Portland?

maybe he just came for a “free” ride to paradise!!!

  51. Matt April 19, 2010 11:24 am

The SB attendance numbers are off of the box score on the UH athletics site.

  52. PONO April 19, 2010 11:25 am

I’m hoping the Shamburger reports are wrong but on the Portland message boards it says that he committed to them. Hope he didn’t use us for a free vacation. What’s more odd is that the reports are that he committed on Friday so he was taking us for a free ride if its true.

  53. Jack Flash April 19, 2010 11:31 am

    Thanks all!
ST- i just texted a photo to you. Baby and Mommy are doing great! Daddy is doing pretty good as well!

  54. haka April 19, 2010 11:35 am

I think Shamburger committed to Portland last year or at least earlier. Maybe he made it officially official. Hope not. Getting the 2 guards would really finish off the recruiting in very positive way.

  55. Kendall April 19, 2010 11:35 am

PONO, you guys are reading an old report about Shamburger committing to Portland. He decommitted in the Fall and opened up his recruiting. It is down to us and San Jose State for his services.

ST, did Shamburger bring his mom?

I hope so, we need him bad.

  56. warrior650 April 19, 2010 11:37 am

Shamburger had actually committed to Portland last year and de-committed and reopened recruiting. Are they saying he recommitted after his UH visit?

  57. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 19, 2010 11:38 am

Here is a more accurate attendance stat for softball:

    “Get”.

  58. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 19, 2010 11:41 am

Yea for the Warriors/Wahine and especially for Jack and Sarah and baby Evie! What a day for everyone!!!

Just returned to Andaluz to get the family packed out and home again. I’ll make some Myuk-kook tonight.

Mahalo again for your prayers and support. It all came together so wonderfully!

  59. sjmacro April 19, 2010 11:42 am

Congrats to Jack and Mrs Flash and grandma LizK ❗
Do we have congrats for Curveball yet?

A-House: we ate all of the chicken and cake noodle there last night–jk 🙂

  60. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 19, 2010 11:46 am

Speaking of bball, anyone know why Patrick Knapp resigned from the Wahine team?

  61. PONO April 19, 2010 11:47 am

Thank you for clearing up the Shamburger issue. Glad we are still in the running.

  62. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 12:01 pm

The other guy brought his mom.
I thought I saw Shamberger today, which is why I thought it was odd there were reports he committed elsewhere.

I’m sure if somebody commits to another school while on a Hawaii visit, he might have problems with his return ticket when he gets to the airport.

  65. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 12:04 pm

We always chuckle when we see the arena attendance numbers. We think somebody is using their PIN numbers.

  67. BleedGreen808 April 19, 2010 12:07 pm

And Alabama has the attendance record of all time

“A record day for Alabama as it shattered the NCAA single season softball attendance record. With an Alabama single game record crowd of 3,122 the Crimson Tide moved its season attendance to 59,755, which betters the mark of 55,746 set by Fresno State in 1999.”

  68. BleedGreen808 April 19, 2010 12:10 pm

And, just for kicks, here’s a LaTech press release about the game this past weekend

Tech (21-15, 6-6 WAC) fell behind early in game one as Hawaii (36-11, 14-0) scored four runs off of Lady Techster ace Meghan Krieg in the bottom of the first inning. Although all four runs were officially earned, three of them came after Tech should have been out of the frame.

We had plenty of dessert-style snacks with us this past Saturday since we couldn’t make it to the T-Gate, but only a few people took them even though we walked over/down to where folks were sitting.. We’ll have more at the final home series on April 30 & May 1 + bottled water so please feel free to come get them – top row/third base side – if you don’t want to wait in line.

My ride is here to the ticket office. Back very late tonight.

Congrats to the Flash Family –

  73. Kazz April 19, 2010 12:33 pm

    A-House,

I doubt that was the largest crowd to watch a Wahine Softball game since the place was built. They had some good crowds in 2007.

The attendance has been slowly spiking at softball as the season progressed. Against UW we had a decent crowd. I’d guess 700+ in comparison to the 1000+ this Saturday and then a good crowd against CAL on a Friday night when we upset them. A lot of the pre season games had mid week dates with the Wahine doing double duty starting at like 5 sometimes, so this plays a part. The Saturday games in the pre season always had better crowds.

If I were to guess… I believe around 4,000-4,500 people have come to watch the Wahine play this season at home. Of course count us regulars 20xs over…

Hmmm… 4,000 Xs $3.00 or $5.00 = more money than they had to begin with… (just thinking out loud 😎 )

congrats to jack & mrs flash!

    welcome little evie!

  79. A-House April 19, 2010 1:02 pm

    ST:

still chuckling on your remark at #64 – classic – only a “babooz” would commit to another school while “visiting” another.

Good to hear that Moniz will be back in early summer – hope he kept up with his “off-season” work regimen – mine is not to reason why things happened where he was on indefinite leave from the team.

good that Austin and Graves have the entire spring to work on timing with all the receivers – that will certainly help in the future. as Pomai said, Graves should pull the “young” receivers on the side and schedule unofficial practices on routes and timing after Spring ball – this will bode well for them in a year or two!!

  80. A-House April 19, 2010 1:04 pm

    al,

No, that’s not AnnodahDave in the first picture, but jm2375 is in the video of the line at the box office this morning. No line there after 9:30 a.m.

  86. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 1:28 pm

It was a nice touch to have the players pass out doughnuts today.
    But . . . .
I think it would have been better marketing to sell tickets yesterday. By Saturday night, UH knew it would host.
Besides, more people would have been able to buy tickets yesterday. And there would be no parking fee.
Just like UH should have sold 2008 season-ticket vouchers at the arena when the Sugar Bowl invitation was announced.

  87. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 1:29 pm

Not sure if that was the largest crowd for softball, but the loudest was a few years ago, when UH played Fresno State. That was when Inoke Funaki was banging the drum, and other football players were waving the Hawaiian flag.

  88. forest April 19, 2010 1:33 pm

    Mr. tsai,
It might be interesting if you can give some details to those of us who can not got to the spring games or practices. I , along with others for sure, would like to have some info as such:
    who are the strongest warriors
    who are the quickest
    who are the fastest
    who are the meanest
    players who have surprised
who are going to be impact players
    who are the pranksters, etc.

    thanks.

  89. Slugger April 19, 2010 1:40 pm

What bothered me about the marketing at UH is that at the SoftBows game on Saturday night, they did not announce that the men’s VolleyBall team was going to host a first round game until the end of the 2nd SB game. I went over to the booth & asked a young woman to make sure they tell people that they should get tickets for Saturday’s match. We knew that UH was going to host the game hours before the end of the 2nd SB game. You have a captive audience. They announce this information at the END of the game when people are leaving the stadium. I was tempted to call JD, but figured I’d just go to the booth. No one is thinking marketing.

  90. BleedGreen808 April 19, 2010 1:41 pm

Don’t forget the hassle of finding a parking…not to mention those who take up two stalls to park.

    Slugger:

“small” minds have no experience at “marketing” a product; it takes one who is willing to work the brain to arrive at ways to “sell” the product – always thinking/believing small is a mind-set that really needs to change in a hurry to capitalize on opportunites and striking while the fire is hot, hot, hot!!!

nothing wong to think outside the box – if lousy, people will laugh, but that should not stop one from continuing to think! we need risk takers; not followers!!!

  96. Kendall April 19, 2010 1:51 pm

Thanks Stephen for the heads up that Barnes’ mom was with him.

What’s going on with the Asst. Basketball coaches situation, it seem like forever that they have been saying that they are working the details on the contract for Nickelberry.

  97. Ralph April 19, 2010 1:54 pm

Didn’t Jim Donovan earn a Master in Business Aministration with a focus in Marketing. Auwe. But that was a long time ago, people tend to forget what they learned in college when their current job is in another area. Slugger, you should remind him by email, as AD he can talk to the marketing people or get his team act together. Mr Clapp aren’t you in the business of helping JD, Mr. McNamara, isn’t external your kuleana, meaning, selling tickets with better marketing skills. Just wondering and typing randomly as usual.

are both parents allowed on an official visit?

  102. Slugger April 19, 2010 2:03 pm

    jm2375,

Don’t worry about the video. You are looking down at your phone, probably texting or on the blog. Your face is not visible, but I know you… I could tell.

  103. Kendall April 19, 2010 2:07 pm

    al

This is the first I have heard that parents traveled with their kids on an official visit. That’s weird. Did Shamburger really bring his Dad?

Shamburger had stated on Rivals that he will announce where he is going today, but I think he has delayed his announcement until tomorrow.

  104. Bulla April 19, 2010 2:10 pm

official visits are for the student athlete only; anyone else is on their dime…..

  105. Slugger April 19, 2010 2:15 pm

    Ralph,

McNamara left during the 1st SB game. I didn’t see JD there. I thought about calling him to call the booth, but figured he might not have the announcer’s number, and it was almost the end of the game. The people in the booth evidently don’t think about marketing. Someone should have thought about the ticket sales earlier & contacted the booth to make that exciting news known when you have a full stadium. OK, I stop now.

  106. al April 19, 2010 2:23 pm

    okay tks for the clarification.

the parents though are allowed to stay in the same hotel room as their student/athlete son/daughter that the school is paying for nothing else.

what happens when they find a plane ticket on the back porch? nah, jus kiddin only usc does that.

Interesting to note, too, that Gib Arnold stays in that hotel.
Also interesting to note that when his top assistant arrives, both will share a hotel room. OK, it might be more like a suite.
Times are hard on the boulevard.

  111. Kendall April 19, 2010 2:46 pm

    Stephen,

Can’t the UH just have Gib and Walter stay for periods of time in the Ala Moana Hotel for that $40 a night deal. They should be able to cut some kind of deal for the month.

I guess, Gib isn’t getting help from Artie Wilson in finding a house 🙂

So no new news about the other assistants?

  112. Stephen Tsai April 19, 2010 2:49 pm

It makes sense for Gib to stay in a hotel while his family is still on the Mainland.

  113. Bulla April 19, 2010 2:50 pm

    who are the strongest warriors
    who are the quickest
    who are the fastest
    who are the meanest
    players who have surprised
who are going to be impact players
    who are the pranksters, etc.

    thanks.

    How do you measure mean?

  116. Kazz April 19, 2010 3:00 pm

I’m going to e-mail John McNamara again.

If the road to charging attendance at UH softball lies years ahead, at least get some kala in to the department, by attempting to sell signage at the stadium. There is nothing out there but a Phiten, Oceanic Time Warner, and Under Armour Banner and a Easton Banner, of which those two already support the Wahine VERY WELL with apparel from UA and bats, gloves, and helmets and whatnot from Easton.

Not to mention a rotating ad board like at baseball behind home plate for the Wahine games that are televised.

It’s too late for this season, but depending on how far the Wahine go after May 1st 2010, the anticipation and media attention and hype that they could garner leading into Spring 2011 could provide a great platform for advertisers to get their name out there. A good CHUNK of this year’s batting order shall return with new fresh faces to rejuvenate our departed seniors.

    David Pa’aluhi update.

Pa’aluhi left school in February, telling Riley it was because of personal issues and his desire to join the military.

Apparently, playing closer to home- he is from Waianae, Hawaii – will allow Pa’aluhi to better handle a situation where he has a girlfriend and child but still wants to continue with football and make progress towards his political science degree.

Riley said after several conversations with Pa’aluhi’s father, who did not want his son to join the Army, he decided to grant Pa’aluhi his release to play for Hawaii.

OSU teammates thought Pa’aluhi was giving up football to be in the military. Pankey said he corresponded with Pa’aluhi, “a few days ago’’ and Pa’aluhi didn’t mention plans to play for Hawaii.

  125. Garret April 19, 2010 3:33 pm

Reached in Hawaii on Monday, David Pa’aluhi Sr., David’s father, said the transfer to play for Hawaii wasn’t a slam dunk. “He doesn’t know what he’s going to do right now, but I want him to finish school, somehow, somewhere,” said the father.

Almost finished with road game information for all interested in West Point, Las Vegas, and Boulder.
Packages are available but many of you and your friends/family are into travelling on your own schedule so we have put together a calendar of events and some contacts to save $$.

    Get ready for May 5!!
I will have the flyer on the fundraiser maybe by tomorrow. Great job by Tiki’s and GM Kelly McGill (FB ALUM) to donate all of the proceeds, from all margaritas sold, to the UH Football program.

Meeting of the minds last week at Waialae CC. Coach Price, Simeon Alo, Elroy Chong, and Mike Biscotti talking about the need to re-connect football alumni to lead the UH Football fundraising charge.

Hope Pa’aluhi can figure things out for himself and take care his priorities. Would love to see him in one Warrior Uniform but seems he get bigger issues to handle at home. Seems like the pops get planny influence on what he does. If I was Pa’aluhi maybe should go reserves, have Uncle Sam pay for his school, get stipend pay and reserve pay to offset his expenses plus can get part time job if need be. That way he can play football, have his school paid for and have money for his girl and kid, plus get his family for support. Then when all is said and done either he continue playing ball somewhere or become one officer in the military or something??? IMO

I believe you mentioned that you were once in the Recruting Office.

Perhaps you can give the Paaluhi family a call, and give the options that are available. I don’t think you would be ” in conflict”, as you are in the military and are not connected to UH.

According to google, this David is III, and his Dad is the Jr.

He has a facebook & other on-line stuff.

    Thought I’d throw this in.

  135. Derek April 19, 2010 4:48 pm

With baseball at 18-18 on the season and in the basement in the WAC does that mean that Trapasso is on the fence. Are the players overrated? Is our pitcing that bad? Is it the coaching? Is it the recruiting? Some of the position players can hit a lick, a number of them are at or below the Mendoza line. McDonald is a very good fielder, but his hitting is terrible. Kolten Wong is by far the most consistent player day in and day out. Jim Donovan has a difficult decision to make.

He is finishing up his AA and intends to walk on for Fall. He has 2 years to play.
Young man has an attitude; he intends to show up and take someones spot on the first unit. You just have to love that type of fire. Let’s see if he backs it up by:
    1. getting the AA
    2. staying in shape. getting in better shape
    3. Enrolling at UH
    4. Walking on
    5. kicking okole and fighting for a spot

The news before stated that David Pa’aluhi had received a release to join the military. However, recently he specifically asked for a release to join UH and Oregon State granted it.

February 25th, Mike Riley announced starting linebacker David Pa’aluhi had withdrawn from school to join the United States Armed Forces, but Monday Riley confirmed Pa’aluhi had asked for his release from Oregon State to play for Hawai’i.

“In order to do that, he had to ask for a release from us. That’s why we know about it,” Riley said after practice Monday, “We were kind of surprised by that, but after talking to his father, we agreed to allow him that release.”

Pa’aluhi started all 13 games at middle linebacker in 2009, was second on the Beavers in total tackles with 77, and earned Pac-10 Honorable Mention.

Pa’aluhi would not be able to play for Hawai’i until the 2011 season. Oregon State is scheduled to play at Hawa’i that season.

  148. Kazz April 19, 2010 6:27 pm

You know who is a great supporter of Wahine softball? Jett and Jori Jasper’s mom. Sorry, I do not know her name but man can she get into it!!! (SJ and Myki had to point me out who she was.)

Me, Ralph and HiFlyer were sitting two rows behind her on Saturday and in that fiasco where LaTech had a run taken away from them she was the first to know what happened.

Of course she was saying that her husband was at home watching the game and called her ASAP on her cell to confirm “SHE (LaTech player) NEVER TAGGED IN!!!!”

Also, to fly in from Kauai for pretty much every home game is a feat in itself. I believe members of Jessica Iwata’s family are always there too, another Kauai fan favorite.

  149. A-House April 19, 2010 6:36 pm

    Don Weir:

Although you are no longer connected with NaKoa, A-House ohana is happy to see that you continue to put UH football at or near the top of your list as things to do for the program.

Gathering former coaches and players who are willing to support a “fund raising” effort can go a long way to securing donations from the mainland and Hawaii.

Groups like the Tsaikos and other tailgate groups can also be “tapped” to contribute “time” and “dollars”. Who knows, all it takes is for a single person to make the right contact and walla, many good size and perhaps, a big donation in hand.

The effort can also be targeted to former students, athletes, and residents who have tranplanted themselves eslwhere, but still feel the pride to contribute to UH – football or academics!

Many small donations can add up to a heck of a lot of dollars!!!

  150. Bulla April 19, 2010 6:45 pm

    #141 Al,

oh wise sage, although we traveled to many camps, combines, and unofficial visits during Ryan’s adventure, he went on his official recruiting trips by himself….and that was a good experience for him 🙂 if it is an unofficial trip, anyone can go because it is not on the school’s ‘dime’ so to speak. official trips come with many restrictions and regulations…..you know, the NCAA gets involved, haha

  151. A-House April 19, 2010 6:47 pm

    Kazz, Pomai, Slugger:

It’s unfortunate that the powers to be are so slow in making decisions that a “donation” box at Saturday’s game could have netted nealry $1,000 if every person gave $1.

Same amount or more could be donated on April 30 and May 1st making the total nearly $3,000 for the softball program. That’s $3,000 more than they have now! This could cover the cost, most if not all, for the bracelets if they win the WAC.

What’s involved in constructing a temporary donation box, placing it somewhere within the stadium, making an announcement of it’s location for fans to drop in the $$$. Perhaps to difficult for small thinking individuals – must there be a meeting and approval before it’s done? How long will that take?

Perhaps the 2 Asst ADs have no connection in Hawaii to pull this off. If so, just ask! If they no like get involved, then Jim D should take the handle and get it done!!!

Can Honolulu Community College metal shop students construct a metal box with lid? How long would this take? UH needs a donation of a lock? I will donate the lock.

  154. Bulla April 19, 2010 6:56 pm

    NYUH,

you are correct about the Political Science department being one of the best. Under the guidance of Former Dept. Chair Neil Milner it evolved to be one of the better departments within the university system. Coupled with the likes of Mike Haas, Noel Kent, Jim Dator, Ira Rohter and others, there was quite an eclectic group of forward thinkers in the 1980’s to 1990’s.

Although I am not sure the direction of the department currently, the foundation and pillars of excellence were established years ago. If Pa’aluhi truly desires to pursue his degree in Political Science, I think he will be more that pleasantly surprised in what he finds in Manoa.

Rumor has it, that one of the degrees I found was from this department in the early ’80’s, haha……………….watch out, Tsai’s secret is safe with me.

I think we get em though, Vaughn, Haku, and the boys get that crazy mentality when they play. Jake Heun going need to step it up big time. George Daily-Lyles looks the part but just inexperienced. Maybe one of the new guys coming in can get plugged in right away… I hope either Elisara, Tu’u, Quines or T.J. Taimatuia can go from the start. I would even try moving the guy Siaki Cravens in there with his size and speed if they come as advertised in the summer…

    Herr Buller,

No apologies needed. As the creator, nurturer, teacher and mentor of a certain Beast, you just might know a thing or two about gettin a player ready to play. Except for the horsemeat, those might actually be good ideas… 😉

    D1, Bulla–

    USC’s scrimmage this Saturdays recap–

6 sacks, 14 TFL, 2.2 yards per carry…and, ohhh, Barkley had 5 TDs

    Kazz,

Jett’s mom’s name is Therese or Theresa. You can friend her on FB.

    Slugger,

I’m not on FaceBook, or Twitter, my MySpace page is ancient and pretty much inactive.

I’m 27 and finding things like networking sites too time consuming. I think I’m now lame and falling out of loop. I haven’t even bothered to by an iPod.

My time better spent sleeping. 🙁

  176. LizKauai (iPhone PDX) April 19, 2010 8:31 pm

Curveball- I guess fastball would have been a good name then 😆
Related story- when my daughter had her belly painted with Lilu, they painted the baby her favorite color- purple. This time they painted the outline in a salmon pink and started to paint the baby in blue. She stopped them saying Lilu came out purple. They changed it to a healthy pink.
When Kaimi was born, there was a bit of drama where he might have gone blue. But by the grace of God, and some very professional midwives, he turned pink before he turned blue.
Nitey nite and sweet Warrior Dreams!

Aside from the donation box being added….If I may make a suggestion to those interested… One can donate year around to Wahine Softball through Koa Anuenue. I set up monthly deductions via my checking account to Wahine Softball about a year and a half ago with 100% of the funds being tax deductable. Koa Anuenue will send you a receipt at the end of each calendar year.

I know some have had their doubts, I have NEVER had a problem and in one solitary instance, I dug into my own research to realize I made a mistake when moving my debit date from it’s original setting. It was MY mistake and NOT Koa Anuenue’s.

Any amount will do. It’s year around and the coaches have direct access to it from what I understand.

The Wahine Softball booster club “Hui Kako‘o Pa‘ana Pohili” is like Na Koa in the sense that if you send in “X” amount of $$$$ you get something in return but not 100% of you money goes to the program as its used to offset some minimal costs of the items you receive as gifts. There is an option on the booster club membership to write a single check that is 100% tax deductable, but for the amount I wanted to donate last season and this season, I just didn’t have that kala available all at once so I went with the monthly deduction route.

As a bank employee, I’ve seen ACH transfers go wrong, I have YET to experience a problem with Koa Anuenue and at last check with Coach Coolen, all my kala is going right into their account no problem.

  178. Kazz April 19, 2010 9:02 pm

    Ahouse,

I could donate a LARGE and easily annoyed samoan guy to act as a real good “lid” for the donation box.

No promises for next weekend though. But seriously, they really better protect that box.

Hopefully they can form a good committee to decide on what kind of metal they will use, what brand of lock they can buy in compliance with NCAA standards, if and when the players can acknowledge the box with compliance to NCAA standards in the proximity of cash donations offsetting “gifts to student athletes” in the individual limit of $300.00 per student athlete, BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙄

(back to common sense now and away from burecratic red tape….)

MAKE THE BOX, SECURE DA BOX, AND PAU!!!!!!!!!!

  184. al April 19, 2010 11:59 pm

pauoa boy…some talk that at least one of those guards will commit. while the other is still fishing, though he hasn’t ruled out the manoa campus.

  185. Ralph April 20, 2010 12:09 am

lots of guards, and big guard, small forward hybrid type. If the new recruits sign on, I suspect Gib uses a 3 guard set, no depth in the power forward and center position.

  186. al April 20, 2010 12:39 am

ralphie…expect one or two more post players still to come.

    2010 paint players
    amis
    milovic
kurtz (perhaps a healthy kurtz will be better next year)
    joaquim
    thomas
    wiseman

  187. al April 20, 2010 12:53 am

ben mills, a seven footer was released from his early loi with boise state and is now shopping for a home.

he once was on the hawaii radar screen.

  188. Ralph April 20, 2010 1:05 am

Milovic is a small forward, #3 position. Wiseman, a big guard who handles the ball, #2 or #3 depending on need. I see Joaquim, Amis and Kurtz as the only big man but Amis is a light weight, he doesn’t take a lot of space and is not that physical in the paint. Kurtz was healthy last season, he had to sit 6 games because of questionable games in a semi pro league, but he was slow and made a lot of fouls. Thomas is listed as a guard, can play #3 forward.

as you stated, some big man on the way. But the two recruits this weekend, Barnes and Shamburger are also guards. UH got any scholarship left if these two sign on for big men?

Isn’t Zane listed as a shooting guard, tall enough to play small forward.

  189. al April 20, 2010 1:33 am

milovic will end up spelling at the 4 spot. too slow for the three.

wiseman’s primary position will end up at the 3. he is not a steady enough shooter to play the 2. could give headaches as a quick 4.

thomas is not a guard. but, will be effective as a big three or a quick 4 and will cause mismatches in the paint or on the wing or high post.

zane is a shooter and that will be his primary mission.

joaquim will end up a starter at center unless we find another one in the next few weeks.

the number of available scholarships is up to gibber. he can wipe the slate completely if he wanted to. if xi leaves then we will have six scholafrships available.

guys are fighting for their scholarships at the moment during position drills being conducted by gibber and roese.

i expect one or two current scholies to be released.

  190. Pomai April 20, 2010 2:17 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Interesting piece about the Aloha Stadium lease. Hope this happens, then maybe UH can keep more of the money.

The stadium is on federal land with a lease that requires the property be used for public recreational purposes, limiting the use of the land, Saito said.

The current lease restricts use of the stadium to events that the public can attend, but Saito has received requests from corporations that want to hold private concerts and events at the stadium.

Hi All, I have strange situation which I am struggling with. We have just performed a desktop refresh and at the same time delivered Windows 7 to the new machines. We use SCCM to deliver the machines and the build process works well. However, I have one niggling problem. The first time a user logs on to a freshly built machine the UAC kicks in and prompts for credentials on the Secure Desktop. In our case the UAC is stopping the application of a video card driver. The UAC and Secure Desktop are working as per design as we are making use of this feature. However, I am not expecting the UAC to kick in and stop the device driver installation. This is becuase I have expliclty defined the Video Card Device Setup Class “4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318” against the “Allow non-administrators to install drivers for these device setup classes” policy. The one thing I did note is that the certificate used by Microsoft to sign the driver expired on the 23/01/2010. I am not sure is this is the root cause?? I know it is the video card becuase if the Administrator credentials are entered the next event that is viewed is the “Drive finished installing” in the system tray. Can the UAC and this policy work in conjuntion? Has anybody else hit this issue?
