Monday's practice

For the first time this training camp, the service teams (previously known as the scouts) ran Florida’s plays in practice. The original plan called for the Florida plays to be implemented Wednesday. But because the Warriors have progressed rapidly, the timetable was moved up.
• Quarterback Greg Alexander, who had been bothered by an ingrown toenail and tender ankle, resumed practicing ttoday. He split reps with co-No. 2 quarterback Inoke Funaki.
• Dylan LInkner, who moved to left wideout Saturday, received extended work.
• Linebacker Solomon Elimimian did not practice because of an ankle injury, which is not considered to be serious.
• Right tackle Keoni Steinhoff did not practice today because of a tweaked ankle. He is expected to resume practicing in a couple of days. Aaron Kia and Brysen Ginlack practiced at right tackle.

Cameron Allen-Jones has been impressive as a pass-rushing defensive end.

Vaughn Meatoga has played a lot while defensive tackle Fale Laeli rests his surgically repaired knee. Meatoga reminds me of a young Tony Tuioti.

This is from Lon Gibson, father of basketbal player Matt Gibson:
Lil Matt has signed a contract to play in Romania this season with U Mobitelco. He will be their point guard. Last season the team finished in the finals of the Romania League. Off to Transylvania.

Mark Rodrigues, point guard on those giant-killing Chaminade basketball teams, attended football practice today.

From our friend, Jaymes Song, of The Associated Press:

I am very happy, and humbled, to annouce the birth of Sophia J. Song, who was born at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 10:10 p.m. She is 6 pounds, 5 ounces and 19 inches tall. Baby and Mommy are doing great and resting comfortably.
Baby Sophia has the grace of her mother and the appetite of her father.
Colleen did wonderfully. Amazingly, she put in a full day at the office before delivery. The medical staff noted how calm and composed she was during the process, unlike the father.
The birth capped an intereresting day that started with following Obama around the island. I had to ditch the Obama media pool while the senator was munching burgers at the beach.
We decided to go to the hospital, just in case, before taking the long drive home. And the hospital admitted her and Sophia was born five days early.

warmest aloha,
Daddy

A-Joe & Liz – just got the report from ST on practice since I wasn’t able to make it today…

So, Derrick Low is the one going to Australia, then? I remember it was someone with Hawaii ties.

But which is better for one’s career? Australia or Romania?

  32. whitey August 18, 2008 2:23 pm

good to see tee-bow practicing and giving our d a chance to do some serious work. one question, is there a defensive service team which imitates flouridah or future opponents????

  33. WarriorMojo August 18, 2008 2:25 pm

If there is a email group for the Oregon State game, can I please be added to it? Am definitely going to that game now, but still working on logistics.

Also, is there still progress on a charter from Portland to Corvallis? One of the posters on the Sports Hawaii board is interested in joining us for that.

  34. homey ⑤ August 18, 2008 2:26 pm

Stretch – soooo, nothing on the 16th or early morn’ 17th? 😆 Nah, just spoke with James on the phone and all I heard was “oh boy”.

warriormojo, the last time i check, hawaiian air had a low fare departing honolulu fri afternoon and arriving in pdx in the evening and returning monday am back to hnl. was under 400.

  46. madeinhawaii August 18, 2008 2:31 pm

    Whitey,

Imitate Florida? You mean like putting 12 men on the d-line with 4 more stacked behind to simulate the rush?

  47. Da Punchbowl Kid August 18, 2008 2:31 pm

  55. bb August 18, 2008 2:37 pm

and why all the hate from those on the redskins message board?

  56. whitey August 18, 2008 2:38 pm

mih, something like that. that way you get to put plenty players into action instead of just watching and not getting any plays in. hahahahaaa

  58. da princess' classmate August 18, 2008 2:40 pm

    afternoon tsaikos

plenty things 2look forward to in da coming days — LLWS Semis, Decathlon, Pigskin pigout, Mililani vs. St. Louis

wonder if Kia has any chance of supplanting Steinhoff in that RT position to allow LL to start on da left side?

  59. homey ⑤ August 18, 2008 2:41 pm

ST – I heard that 8 gauge copper wire is better than string. Plus get potential for battery booster.

  60. WarriorMojo August 18, 2008 2:42 pm

WM – You still married after all this?

Well, I haven’t been served with any papers. At least not yet. LOL

Whitey, thanks, that’s an awesome fare, pretty close to what Stretch got a few months back. I’m hoping more Tsaikos and Warrior fans will make the trip. I got my air travel using mileage and will be going by way of LAS.

I was wondering though if anyone was still making plans for a shuttle bus between PDX and Corvallis on the day of the game. The drive shouldn’t be that bad, but a shuttle bus works too.

For those going to the Florida and OSU games, how much was the face value of the game tickets? I’m looking at trying to get better seats behind the Hawaii bench. That might be asking for trouble on game day, though, so it’s still in the “thinking about it” stage. I mean, if I don’t rag on the Gator fans as I walk out after we win, will they still try to jump me?

  61. homey ⑤ August 18, 2008 2:43 pm

bb – I’m waiting for Mike to get his hands on the Bolla report!

  62. Stretch August 18, 2008 2:44 pm

WarriorMojo & others for the OSU game – I am still working on a charter bus for the game. Right now, costs are about $900. Unless we can find more guys, it might be around $50-55 per person.

  63. homey ⑤ August 18, 2008 2:45 pm

WM – I don’t think it would hurt if you also wear a BJ Penn T-shirt to the Florida game.

  64. whitey August 18, 2008 2:47 pm

mih, after re-thinking, i think you hit upon something that should be used against the 1st team offense. the defense should have a 5 man front, 4 linebackers, and 5 defensive backs. this way they can really put pressure on the offense and make them in time to do things automatically like blocking both regular and blitzes, running routes thru holes, running pass patterns, making qb faster on his reads, etc. if the offense can handle this type, playing any team will lessen their mistakes and make them very very confident.

  65. Dennis Halloran August 18, 2008 2:48 pm

JJ dumped the returning starter at SMU for two freshman to battle it out. Bo Levi Mitchell, UH recruit is one of them!

  66. WarriorMojo August 18, 2008 2:50 pm

homey, if I could stick your guns in the sleeves, that might be okay.

  67. bb August 18, 2008 2:51 pm

Homey, should be interesting to see.

My good friend was a student manager during Bolla’s first year. This guy took stats, practiced with the girls and did whatever the assistants asked of him. Throughout the entire season he was there he never spoke to Bolla and Bolla never spoke to him. When I linked the article to him yesterday he said, it didnt surprise him at all.

  72. da princess' classmate August 18, 2008 2:53 pm

don’t really give a crap bout JJ or his ponies, just wondering if having 2 true freshman on the depth chart rise above a junior who started for about 2 years, is this gonna split da team. now i ain’t so sure if jj’s gong bowling this year, that’s okay cuz we are 🙂

  94. Garret August 18, 2008 3:21 pm

JJ dumped the returning starter at SMU for two freshman to battle it out. Bo Levi Mitchell, UH recruit is one of them!

    Dennis,

Actually, Dan Morrison clarified things and said that Bo is the starter and Braden Smith (another true freshman) is the top backup.

  95. chawan_cut August 18, 2008 3:21 pm

    homey,
what voices were you hearing? you were standing in front of the speakers all night long. you probably were hearing james whisper-sing from his back corner.

  96. Garret August 18, 2008 3:27 pm

This is just a blog, but it talks about whether or not the MWC should expand by 3 teams. And they don’t consider UH one of the top 3 teams to take!

This thread considers he benefit for the MWC should it choose to expand. The expansion considered involves three teams, Boise State, Fresno State and Houston. This would give the MWC TV markets in Houston and a larger fan base in California.

  97. Garret August 18, 2008 3:29 pm

I don’t know if the AP always did this or if they had to add this because of some of the biased ballots they were getting. They are threatening to take away the voting privileges of voters who skew their ballots too much!

Please be advised: “Homerism” will be challenged and could lead to dismissal from the poll board.

  98. Garret August 18, 2008 3:30 pm

    WarriorMojo,

I don’t know if you saw this report on SH about today’s practice, but this really concerned me!

On a down note though, L. Letuli looked like he tweaked his knee as he was out of pads for the later part of the practice. Hopefully it’s just something minor.

  99. Garret August 18, 2008 3:31 pm

Apparently, J. Taylor still cannot participate in practice.

  100. homey ⑤ August 18, 2008 3:33 pm

Mojo- I think the -face value- tix were $35 and $40 for Fla and OSU. Add $10 fee to that for HI.

bb- Redskin hate – our enthusiasm for CB5 overwhelmed the boards (not only a few Tsai-kos – plenny folks I don’t know) and some of the (normally combative anyway) resident posters thought their starting QB was getting dissed.

They were like- shadap about the rookie, system , WACky, inflated, blah blah blah pineapple QB already.

Of course, dems was fighting words.

Then it got worse when CB5 looked good in preseason “against the scrubs” and the normal Skins fans started getting excited.

It’s ugly, but gradually settling down.

Point is- Skins fans have been waiting for their franchise QB to appear for a long time (think Jurgensen) and Colt is looking pretty good to normal folk. Some want to jump the gun before he has time to settle in and learn how to be an NFL QB.

    IMHO, of course

    Aloha Everybody,

Looks like everything is kind of falling into place with the team. With only two more weeks till the game, I am hoping that all the small kine injuries to the O-Line, D-Line, and Linebackers will be all healed.

Been kind of out of the loop though the past couple of days so gotta go back and read up.

Did anyone notice how much more relaxing it was in that room? The big screen, the comfortable surroundings and large dance floor…and then there was Esme! Radiant as ever. In perpetual motion. Just sashayin’ singing, dancing and ‘dueting’ with the stars! Was like Prom night huh Esme?

Kekoa, no forget u the honored guest on Wed. For this season, i going trust Coach Mc and his asst, so not going say anything that is negative. I don’t think Mc would have hired Gerke if he didn’t trust him or respect his ability to coach. This year is entirely different from previous coaching ways and maybe some no can handle and need excuses. That not good. I am sure this is not the first time Coach Gerke has been called names and won’t be the last, but if he knows how to coach and produce winners for the Warriors, I will be cheering.

  121. Kekoa August 18, 2008 5:42 pm

whitey ~ I understand your confidence in coach Gerke being handpicked by coach Mack. We are on the same page. Believe me, I did not just hear of this yesterday. When I get to Maui, we can discuss this further. It goes deeper than name-calling.

  122. kama krab August 18, 2008 5:45 pm

eh back again for one question

eh Kekoa what’s the story behind Gerke the Jerky. no can read to fast so if anything was mentioned I neva see um.

I think from what I’ve read about Gerke he one nutts buggah. So if he gets a little out of hand, that’s what it is. The braddah is just nutts. Just as long as braddah can coach these boys up I find with him.

  123. kama krab August 18, 2008 5:48 pm

    find-fine

  124. Kekoa August 18, 2008 5:51 pm

Gigi ~ Sorry I couldn’t get this info to you sooner, I posted it on the wrong watchamacallit! We used to do lunch up there after a round of golf at Pali. This is my recollection circa 1983 – 1988:

The restaurant you refer to was the old Haiku Gardens. ‘Gardens’ is the key word. If you like the scenery of the Ko’olau range as a backdrop and lots of flowers, that’s what you pay for there.

The lower level of the establishment is the location used for Weddings. With all of the lush plant life that surrounds the area below and the lily pad pond and gazebo…expect squadrons of mosiquitos keeping you close company. The food is blaze’-blaze’ and the cost is not ‘word’ it these days. (IMO of course).

You really shouldn’t have any trouble getting seats for 10, they don’t seem to draw the crowds they used to back in the day. I hope I’m wrong and they’ve got good vector control for the bugs now. The food? Well, that’ll be yours to decide.

  125. Kekoa August 18, 2008 6:05 pm

Kama ~ It’s true that he does have a ‘drill sgt’ attitude when it comes to coaching, and there is nuttin’ wrong wid dat. We all had that type of coaching experience before. It has nothing to do with the players, and more to do with his personal conduct as a representative of the team.

I was just wondering if ST had heard anything different about him. Something we can hang our hats on as we prepare for the season opener.

  126. Stretch August 18, 2008 6:05 pm

Good News on Cooke/Ching Field – it is being used…. by the band. They were out there this afternoon practicing on the blakc surface.

Afternoon practice was just special teams, nothing to report.

  127. kama krab August 18, 2008 6:17 pm

Kekoa I hope that this does not become somewhat of a problem, cause if braddah is truly one good coach then we just have to deal with his other stuff. I would just hope that as a representative of the team and the university, he decides to put whatever it is behind him and become one of the ohana which he is apart of.

On the other hand if he doesn’t, then he will need to learn what it means to be a part of one ohana. Cause would suck to lose one good coach because he couldn’t learn how to live hawaiian style.(jmo)

    Hope everything can smoothe out.

    k-den gotta go home
catch everybody when I get home.

    gigi — re: Haleiwa Joe’s

As others have said, it was the Haiku Gardens and is now “Haleiwa Joe’s”. Peaches and I were there 3 weeks ago when her sister renewed wedding vows there. We had the buffet brunch. Maybe I was grumpy because I had to cut short a very enjoyable weekend to attend, but on my personal buffet scale of 1-10, it wouldn’t pass 4. I have not tried the dinner menu since it changed from Haiku Gardens.

I hosted a dinner party last night. My inlaws told us Massachusetts does not permit liquor sales in supermarkets. You must buy it in liquor stores. They had to amend the consitution to permit liquor sales on SUNDAYs.

Also, you cannot buy liquor after 6 pm in Utah!

All the more reason to relocate to Hawaii, huh?

  137. gigi-hawaii © August 18, 2008 7:02 pm

Also, there was a big debate as to whether it was financially more rewarding to begin getting SS benefits at age 66 or age 70.

If you live past 81, it is better to start the benefits at age 70 because the amount would be higher.

Ever wonder how other blogs compare to the WB?
I’ve been gleanig info from The Orlando Sentinel’s Swamp Things by Jeremy Fowler over the past couple of weeks. I was busy this past weekend so wasn’t able to check his blog.
This past Saturday he had UF’s compliance guy on as a guest blogger and opened it up for questions. The result? TWO COMMENTS…not only that they were both from the same reader!
Comment 1: (there was a pic of the guest on the blog)Why is there a big picture of you in your blog entry?
Comment 2:Or is that McCloskey? (the name of the blog guest)
    😆

I guess we bloggers are more loquacious.

  140. d1島: August 18, 2008 7:09 pm

Anyway the guy posts interesting stuff about the Geckos F-ball preparations.
    This from Saturday.
Apparently one teammate thinks Percy Harvin won’t be playing in the first two games this season.

Wide receiver Brandon James is the first Gator to come out and say dynamic playmaker Percy Harvin might miss some actual game time because of the nagging heel injury. James, the kick-return specialist who has been filling in for Harvin at his usual receiver spot during practice, said his teammate might not be in the lineup for the Aug. 30 season opener against Hawaii.

“I think he may only be out one or two games, if that, with the ankle injury,” James said.

  141. gigi-hawaii © August 18, 2008 7:12 pm

Great news for Hawaii! I hope Florida’s corps is riddled with injuries.

  142. d1島: August 18, 2008 7:13 pm

Most Folks who saw their spring game will recall Carlos Dunlap (DE) as one of the expected new stars for the Geckos. This article talks about four more newcomers who should make a difference for them. I’m pretty sure Mon Williams is the RB I recall as a really tough runner.

RB Mon Williams (R-So.): It’s easy to forget about this guy with Harvin, Rainey, Moody and Moore creating all the buzz. But Williams was poised for a big 2007 before his torn ACL in the spring of 2007. A tough, between-the-tackles guy like Williams is inidispensable for a team that needs toughness in the backfield.

Liz ~ I hate to bust your bubble, but I heard on the news of the new iphone being recalled because of problems with a chip that can’t be fixed in the field. You might want to get with CS about that.

Maybe the one they shipped out has already had the new component installed. Also, keep close track of your battery life. That was another gripe they said they were getting.

  151. d1島: August 18, 2008 7:22 pm

Tomorrow seems to be a big day in the plans of both coaches as game prep ramps up this week; Hawaii will be at No-Aloha Stadium at noon trying to simulate Gainesville steaminess and the Geckos will try to ride out a hurricane as they attempt to simulate Hawaii’s schemes.

As T.S. Fay could become a hurricane by the time it hits Gainesville on Wednesday morning, the Florida Gators might alter their practice schedule. The plan is to have a Tuesday morning scrimmage and two practices Wednesday, but the storm could come as early as Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. The Tuesday scrimmage is actually important because UF is implementing a mock Hawaii offense and defense using team backups. Coach Urban Meyer says he’s worried because the Gators can’t afford to waste precious practice time.

  152. gigi-hawaii © August 18, 2008 7:24 pm

    Good evening all,
Does anyone know how the “hands up” routine is going at practice?…and how successful was Dana LeDuc at getting cooperation from PRO-football Rams players to do this? I can’t imagine the pros adhering to this regimen, unless of course they got fined for non-compliance…

Mark Rodrigues is very cute. What’s he doing these days, assuming he graduated already?

gigi, you do realize that “those giant-killing Chaminade basketball teams” were from 26 years ago? 😛

Went to afternoon practice after getting “robbed” by the UH Bookstore. (Yeah, I bought my books. But I got a nice discount card for local businesses in the area.) Nothing much to report. The first half was on special teams — Kelly and Symonds practiced kickoffs and punts (as Grasso was not there). They worked on kickoff and punt coverage. After that, the QBs came up and threw to half of the receivers, while the other half practiced catching with the JUGS and did those ab-crunch catches.

  160. 3-Prong August 18, 2008 7:56 pm

Hey ST: What is the deal with UH selling both Nike and UA logo wear? I would think that UA would want exclusivity after donating to the program. Is the selling of Nike gear a carry over from a previous contract? In any event, my personal opinion is that UA designs leave something to be desired thus far. Hope they come out with some new stuff soon.

today I sent three faxes to Darolyn Lendio, General Counsel, UH, and Greg Takeyama, Director of Communications, UHM. cc;d Kevin Souza, Lt. Gov’s Chief of Staff. about the Ching Cooke Field fix. you gotta laugh. first Mr. Takeyama was real pleasant, but I asked him for a copy of the complaint, and he had to check with Mr. Dugg, Procurement Office. Hasn’t got back to me yet, but I’m gonna give him till tomorrow. He’s being nice, I’m being nice.

I started off da conversation by telling Greg Takeyama dat Dennis Sadowski filed the protest. He corrected me, telling me the complaint was filed by CO-HA [Builders Inc]. I said Dennis Sadowski was CO-HA’s registered agent, secretary treasurer and director. I asked for the letter; after that kind of introduction, I’m expecting his full cooperation tomorrow. I cc’d Mr. Souza on all of this.

Tom Mui, you make great points. A copy of the Tanaka v DLNR decision is coming your way. I don’t have a hard copy of the minutes of the 10/07 meeting, but I’m thinking that Darolyn Lendio knows we are looking at this very carefully and publicly , so I’m expecting her to put in long hours on this one.
Never got a chance to talk to her today, but thats what facsimiles are for. She knows the cc’s are going to ST, Ferd Lewis.

What you think? Should we get Rep. Takai in the loop now? I’m thinking that UH wants this moved along asap, so I’m just gonna keep sending out good vibes and see if my charming ways gets results, or if we gotta go to plan B.

But from wat I heard today, its pretty much a given that UH knows the advisory from the Contractor’s Board was not a rule.

what we’re left with is Dennis Sadowski crying about spilled milk and dragging down his friends on the Board.

THE HEAT IS GONNA BE TURNED UP REAL FAST, PUBLICLY.

i sure wish I had Ferd Lewis’ facsimile #.

btw, we’re using the wrong wording. instead of conflict of interest, try ‘appearance of improprietty.

    laterzzzz.

  170. Garret August 18, 2008 8:49 pm

Bad news for Reagan…sad to say, I saw this coming when they signed Grigsby since Miami’s RB coach was the one who turned Grigsby into a FB.

Boomer Grigsby, who started the game, is clearly the front-runner to become the lone fullback kept on the 53-man roster. Reagan Mauia is so-so in all of his assignments, and his blocking wasn’t special. I suspect his tenure with the Dolphins is over.

  171. Koauka August 18, 2008 8:49 pm

So this is a “appearance of impropriety?” I’d like to think the entire board is not involved, but…………..

  172. Garret August 18, 2008 8:51 pm

    Roster battles for the Dolphins.

    Fullbacks
    Reagan Mauia vs. Boomer Grigsby

The more versatile Grigsby supplanted Mauia as the starter Saturday and boosted his chances with a 7-yard catch, key blocks and a special-teams tackle. EDGE: Grigsby

    Wide receivers
    Greg Camarillo vs. David Kircus

Rookie Davone Bess has carved out a niche in the slot, while Camarillo and Kircus seem to be the same sure-handed player. Kircus stretches the field more. EDGE: Kircus

When thinking about UH’s past QB recruiting battles, everyone seemed to end up in a good spot for them.

Kevin Craft is starting at UCLA, his friends and family can watch him play.

Robert Marve is expected to be named Miami’s #1 QB, his friends and family can easily watch him play.

Bo Mitchell is starting at SMU, his friends and family can watch him play.

Brent Rausch is starting at UH, with UH’s coaches only knowing about him because they were tipped off by SMU’s current QB coach.

    Funny how things worked out.

What is the general feeling regarding the QB situation at UCLA. Geez, I think any QB’s on the Bruin’s roster or future QB’s should carry ti leaves and Hawaiian Salt on campus. Year after year QB’s are marred by injuries.

Plus it makes Norm Chows job a bit harder.

Bighilofan2 spoke with Takai this saturday and he said it is not a UH issue although it impacts UH, the issue is the dept ruling on the “advisory.” UH is in the middle, it has to comply with procedures made by a state agency…but contact him and get his take on the situation and if he can give you any insight as to who you should be directing your communication to at this time. We got your back….

    You know Bhf2,

I think this whole situation going with Cooke Field is a whole bunch of BS. It shows that the process has still not changed to this day. It also shows that there will always be someone out there looking out for themselves rather than for the well being our beloved Warriors and the rest of the programs that use the field for there various uses.

I am happy to know that there is people out there like you and the rest of Tsai-kos that are willing to take that extra mile to make sure that things like this do not have to go through the same BS system everything else have to.

All I have to say is keep up the heat on these people and make sure they respond to each and every question you have with the most feasible answers and explainations.

Sorry for going on and on but that is how I feel. That’s all

    Koauka,

I think that “concerned” and “hopeful” would be the terms that fairly characterize the feeling about the QB situation in UCLA’s camp. Maybe Craft will be good…but they are getting *really* thin at the position!

  193. Garret August 18, 2008 9:36 pm

    kama krab,

Nice to see you on the blog again! I would love to have had Marve at UH, but he stayed at home and is starting for a BCS conference team, so I can’t criticize him for his choice.

Craft might have been good, but he would have missed Spring Practice at UH (though UCLA had a really late Spring Practice and he got to attend theirs) and he had only 2 years to play…I like how Rausch has 3 years to play.

I don’t think that the current coaching staff wanted a freshman like Bo Mitchell, so that is no big deal to me.

  194. jm2375 August 18, 2008 9:37 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos!!

Hope you are all having a good day!!

bhf2 – go get um! We gotcha your back!

BTW – got this email from Georgetown. Given that UH just finalized their schedule for this season, I find this surprising. Wonder what they’re waiting for?

There are a variety of season ticket packages available ranging from $10 upper level seats to great seats in the arena’s lower bowl. As a season ticket holder, you will receive the following discounts on the face-value ticket price:

All 100 and 200 level seats (non-courtside): $40/game face value; $32/game season ticket
Upper concourse (400 level) center: $25/game face value; $20/game season ticket
Upper concourse (400 level) corner: $22.50/game face value; $18/game season ticket
Upper concourse (400 level) end zone: $10/game face value; $10/game season ticket
We do not yet know how many games the Hoyas will play this season; the schedule will most likely be released in September. Once the number of Verizon Center home games is finalized, you will be invoiced for the balance on your account (the final cost of the tickets less the $100 per seat deposit).

Seats in the 100 and 200 level also require an annual, minimum per-seat donation to the Hoya Hoop Club, the booster club for Georgetown Men’s Basketball. The donation is 80% tax deductible and is due Friday, October 17.

Per seat donations range from $50 to $5000 (courtside) 😯

More than 1,300 Catholic schools have closed in our country since 1990. Part of the problem is the decreasing numbers of priests, nuns, and brothers (who all work for little or no pay), which forces the schools to hire outsiders at teacher’s salaries that result in painful tuition increases. I know that I attended a week-long Jesuit retreat while I was at SCU and there were significant problems for the church due to the declining numbers of Jesuits.

Josh Leonard’s grandmother and a few other people were asking about the streaming video that Hawaiian Telecom had last year and if they would be doing it again this year. Tombo sent me this link that shows that Oceanic is taking over the internet streaming…and they are charging a LOT more this season!

There will also be live internet streaming of UH home games for various sports. Check out the schedule below for prices and availability.

Internet streaming of all home games can be purchased online (coming soon). Internet streaming available for Football, Women’s and Men’s Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, and Baseball. Individual game prices are $12 for football and $6 for all other sports.

  204. madeinhawaii August 18, 2008 9:54 pm

    Garret,

$12 is not bad if the quality of streams are better, faster and less likely to overload than what people were getting from H-telecom.

I suppose with all the bleeding that H-tel is experiencing from lost revenues, they really can’t affford to be the highest bidder to keep the athletics package.

UH Athletic’s new website will launch on Wednesday!

The University of Hawai’i Athletics Department has revised and upgraded its website, HawaiiAthletics.com, and will launch the new site on Wednesday, August 20. In addition to a new design, the website will include streaming video with highlights, interviews, and feature stories about UH teams, student-athletes, and coaches.

HawaiiAthletics.com is the one-stop, online shop for everything related to UH sports. The site features a wide array of information as well as online ticket services, merchandise, and promotions.

The new website includes all of the familiar features from the current website, plus additional historic information and online media guides for all UH men’s and women’s sports. The streaming video for the website will be in Flash and two screen sizes are available for fans’ viewing. Drop-down boxes along the top of the pages make the site easier to navigate.

UH is working with Internet Consulting Services, a web-design company specializing in collegiate athletics, which currently services more than 200 college sports websites nationwide. The content of the website will be managed internally by UH Athletics.

  206. Garret August 18, 2008 9:58 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I would agree with you if the quality was guaranteed to be better. However, with the increased interest in the Warriors and this being the first year that Oceanic is doing the streaming for Warriors games, I’m worried about the quality!

its to bad some of the redshirts arent out at camp yet to help out with our offense by giving them a good look… the MLB or mean looking backer Kaleo Wong, walk-ons Josh Andrews who turned down a naval academy scholarship to stay closer to home, and the newly added Marc Moody from MVSU would put up a promising scout team for the Warriors, maybe not the Gators but close as we can get for service players

  211. madeinhawaii August 18, 2008 10:16 pm

    Garret,

Well, with less than two weeks to go, I still don’t see anything on Oceanic’s home page regarding UH video streaming. On UH’s website, it looks like they are launching some kind of Video streaming widget.

  213. madeinhawaii August 18, 2008 10:36 pm

Great news for Hawaii! I hope Florida’s corps is riddled with injuries.

Shame on you Gigi. You don’t really want anyone to get hurt do you?

When you beat your opponent, you don’t want them to make any excuses for losing the game. You want to play your best against their best.

Please fellow Tsai-kos…let’s not get into the habit of hoping that our opponents incur injuries to their better players before we play them. First of all, it isn’t “pono”. Secondly, that belittles our Warriors by saying that we can’t beat them when they are at their best.

Our attitude should be that we will come to your house to compete against your best. Let the best man win.

  220. Pride. August 18, 2008 11:26 pm

One more point and I’ll get off my soapbox. Once again Tsai-kos remember, even though we get all excited as Warrior fans, the opponents across the field are just kids. They’re the same age as my daughters, St’s daughters, D1’s #2 son, and Bulla’s baby boy. Football is a rough game by itself without us wishing injuries upon anyone else’s kids.

Gigi, I’m not picking on you, this is for everyone.

Okay pau, soapbox is ready to break.

This was part of a humorous article about the Jets-Skins game

    http://www.homermcfanboy.com/2008/08/18/the-pineapple-express/#comments

‘In the locker room I asked Brennan why no one else on the team seemed to know it was his birthday and was amused by his candid answer.

“I was afraid of what kind of hazing would happen to a guy on his birthday, so I tried to keep it hush,” said Brennan , who apparently isn’t familiar or very confident in coach Zorn’s no rookie hazing policy.

Either way it was the perfect answer from young quarterback who continues to improve. It’s becoming more and more apparent why Hawaii has fallen in love with this kid. If he keeps it up he too may one day get a game ball.

[Editor’s note: Matt Terl, the Redskins highly-talented blogger, writes in to shed some light on the topic of Brennan and rookie hazing. “Colt got his stuff talcum powdered at the home game, so he’s understandably skittish. Not sure why no one covered that, but there you go.”]’

    2. “Wicked Games” by Stone Sour

We couldn’t reference the original Chris Isaak’s version because that makes us think of Helena Christensen, and once that happens we’re not coming back to football. So we’ll settle for the rough-around-the-edges cover done by Stone Sour, which seems fitting for the Hawaii-Colt Brennan love affair. If Colt keeps making plays whenever the coaches call his number, you can bet Brennan’s fan club will only get bigger.

This list missing a few warriors:
    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/wac/2008-08-13-wac-preview_N.htm?csp=34

    AN ADDED DIMENSION

The Western Athletic Conference, known for wide-open, pass-happy offenses, has several standout running backs this season. Among them:

Ian Johnson, Boise State, senior. The face of the Broncos’ Fiesta Bowl run after the 2006 season. He rushed for 1,041 yards (5.0 a carry) in 2007, and some in Boise think he might be only the third most-talented back on the team in terms of natural ability. Sophomore Jeremy Avery (672 yards, 6.5 a carry) looked great last year, and redshirt freshman Doug Martin is expected to have an impact.

Luke Lippincott, Nevada, senior. The 2007 WAC rushing leader (1,420 yards) and offensive player of the year.

Ryan Mathews, Fresno State, sophomore. Twelfth-year coach Pat Hill calls it “the best situation since I’ve been here” at running back. Mathews (866 yards, 6.0 a carry) and junior Lonyae Miller (609 yards) are listed as co-starters. Junior Anthony Harding (449 yards) backs them up.

Yonus Davis, San Jose State, senior. Granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA. A two-time second-team all-WAC pick who rushed for 1,007 yards (6.2 a carry) in 2006. Played only part of one game last year, and the Spartans struggled with their running game.

Patrick Jackson, Louisiana Tech, senior. A second-team all-WAC pick who played all of 2007 with a toe injury and had surgery at the end of the season. He still gained 950 yards (4.7 a carry).

Deonte Jackson, Idaho, sophomore. Last season the nephew of St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson was second in the league in rushing (1,175 yards, 4.9 yards a carry).

Good Morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone has a Warrior Day. Back to the court house for me.

Quick update on Kama Bailey. My best friend is a college official and he worked Idaho’s scrimmage on Saturday. He said Kama was the best looking running back they had and wouldn’t be suprised if he was starting before the end of the year.
    Ok, Esme and out!

    bighilofan2,

Your plan sounds good. Don’t forget to check out the bars near the stadium before the game, kids are okay. Visit Gator City, Salty Dog, Balls, Grog House, Copper Monkey, and Swamp.

Planning a party after the game at a local restaurant at around 4:30pm. Free appetizers and a cash bar. Can you go?

  249. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 5:00 am

what is your projected timetable for resolving this dispute? which agency/departments are involved in this fiasco? which agency are you thinking is making the decision? [I’m thinking that UH doesn’t no since Legal counsel doesn’t keep a copy of your complaint, or so i was told. and UH communications doeesn’t have your records for me to get a copy of, I gotta go through Procurement Mr. Duff, , or so i was told. I’m trying to keep an open mind.

tomorrow (Wed) I’ll ask the questions a little more pointedly. Then I’ll go copy Jeff Portnoy’s complaint and get to the bottom of this….

  252. MeiLing August 19, 2008 5:14 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

BHF2: MAHALO for taking up the battle! Since you one lawyah, I have faith in you to get to the heart of this issue. It’s so transparent what Sadowski did with the “rules” when sitting on the Contractors’ board.

Good Morning bhf2, Mel Ling, Stretch and Tsai-kos everywhere!

It will be a more relaxed morning, no rushing around to make a doctors appointment a day early like yesterday. sj is still in bed so I can make fun of him. He will be at the doctors office and we both will meet friends for lunch at Camellia, then later on this afternoon I have an imaging appointment.

Tonight, sj will pick his sister up at the airport and I will be at the SSC for Mrs. Mack’s football clinic.

Wow we sure get a lot more accomplished on non-practice days.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    http://kauaiworld.com/articles/2008/08/19/sports/sports01.txt

“Jordon, a former Waimea High School runningback who went on to star at Colorado University, is now a Detroit Lion where he picked up two tackles and two assists in his outing last weekend.

“He’s still absorbing the fact that he’s a Lion,” Higa said. “But when he was first drafted, I told him that he needed to give back to the community.”

That prompted him to make an arrangement with Under Armour, one of Jordon’s endorsements, to provide the football team with shoes.
At first he wanted shoes for both the junior varsity and the varsity players,” said Jon Kobayashi, the Waimea High School athletic director.

“But the player arrangement he has prevented him from doing that. Instead, he came up with 50 shoes: that’s worth about $10,000.”

Higa said she thinks that Jordon never forgot about how she would work overtime to pay for shoes while he was playing football at both the Pop Warner and at Waimea High School.

“Shoes are probably one of the most expensive things you need to get when you play football,” Higa said. “In getting shoes for the team, he remembered how hard it is for parents, given the rising prices, to be able to afford shoes for football.”
