It started as an experiment. But it appears that Allen Sampson’s future might be at left wideout, where he will practice the rest of spring training.Sampson was a slotback in 2010.

Congrats to Dan Schmidt on being named Oceanic’s new GM and executive producer. Schmidt will be running the soon-to-be-launched UH channel. Schmidt was news director at KHNL for a few years, but before that, was a director for UH sports for KFVE.

Avis selected Nicole as Sunday’s winner of the sheet featuring autographs from Reagan Mauia, Mana Silva, etc. Thanks again to Slugger for the donation. Text me at (808) 256-0223 for details on where to send the sheet.

Watching Salas play this season is one of the big things that got me back into Warrior football in a big way!

  5. Last Call April 4, 2011 8:15 am

Oceanic Time Warner Cable and UH might be making plans but my plan is I won’t be paying to watch UH sports.

There won’t be any more over-the-airwaves telecasts of UH sports after this academic year. Oceanic takes over from K5. And even if a game were on ESPN, you’re still paying for that through your cable bill.

  8. Derek April 4, 2011 8:18 am

I wanna catch an NFL draft. I hope Greg gets drafted by my favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers!!!!!

Yes, I’m aware that Oceanic will be replacing K5 but I’m still not paying for any type of premium channel or PPV to watch UH sports.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:38 am

Why is the Hawaii Bowl lettering so prominent? As part of the bowl gift package, the school pays for half the gifts, the bowl pays for the other half. UH used its half to pay for the rings.

My bad for not clarifying. Among the many suggestions is that instead of a pay-per-view fee, there might be a flat fee assessed as part of an Oceanic basic package that every subscriber would pay.

I think today’s meeting might be to explain programming instead of subscriber plans.

  31. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:46 am

    The QB is Shane Austin.

  32. gigi-hawaii April 4, 2011 8:46 am

well, I hope the flat fee is reasonable — unlike the $450 I had to pay last year for ppv.

  33. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:47 am

The tallest QB is Kevin Spain, but he’s not limited duty because he underwent shoulder surgery last fall. Spain probably won’t be able to throw in all of the drills until the summer.

  34. Slugger April 4, 2011 8:47 am

Like I said, there are many proposals out there.

But say they were to add $5 a month more to your cable bill. That’s $60 a year per household, but it would allow you to watch all of the events. That comes out to $21 million a year.

  39. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:50 am

    They’re not real diamonds.

  40. gigi-hawaii April 4, 2011 8:51 am

    Ugh…need more kope…CONGRATULATIONS, NICOLE!

  43. cheepono April 4, 2011 8:53 am

so we got allen sampson and darius bright playing the same position now? aside from the 8 inch height differential, what are the main differences in their style of play? i thought slot was for the smaller, quicker, shiftier type guys and wideout was for the guys with straight away speed and jump ball abilities… is sampson more of a javonte taylor type? they seem to have similar physiques.

  44. GoodLookingPake April 4, 2011 8:54 am

How is Kicker Nathan Johnson doing….

    Where is he from…

  45. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:55 am

I think people already pay a certain amount for Disney, CNN, Fox, etc.

Like I said, lots of proposals, none concrete.

Today’s meeting probably is more about advertising packages and the type of programming that will be available.

  46. al April 4, 2011 8:55 am

why IS the hawaii bowl held so prominently on this ring?

is it a reminder to some that we got our butts whipped and that in the future we will be better prepared????

  47. Last Call April 4, 2011 8:56 am

Thank You #30 for the clarification. It will be interesting to see what happens.

  48. al April 4, 2011 8:57 am

cheepono…over the course of the season, i don’t think that sampson at his current weight could endure the hits by linebackers and safeties wanting to get even.

  49. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 8:57 am

Don’t know much about Nathan Johnson except one of the coaches ID’d him as the guy who was kicking after practice. That guy — Johnson? — is tall, left-footed, with a strong leg. He looks like a surfer-type.

  60. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 9:06 am

There are lot of factors in the decision-making. Sampson gives the Warriors a different look on the outside. Plus, it’s a way to get more players involved, and it does give Billy Ray Stutzmann more opportunities. And Promise Amadi joins the mix this summer.

Anguay is going to be a very good player.

Thing is, Anguay had a free semester to get stronger.

Sampson came straight from high school. He said he needs a little time to get stronger, but that’s not easy during spring ball. Expect Sampson to go on an intense weight-training program after spring training ends.

Lau needs to get stronger. He’s probably going to have to redshirt this fall.

  64. Da Punchbowl Kid April 4, 2011 9:11 am

    Mr Tsai –

Your number 38: How much of that profit would go to UH? Are there any current such proposals on the table?

  66. Pauoa Boy April 4, 2011 9:13 am

I wanna catch an NFL draft.

Allen Sampson is a straight speed guy like Da Bizzness without the bulk. D Blount had speed but could take a hit and was shiftier. Sampson is more straight line speed plus he would get drilled coming across the middle with his size. At least on the outside he has more room to use that speed. Stutz Deuce put on weight plus got the height and wiggle to be good in the slot, Miah is ready to go in the slot and has the hands and quicks to get busy. Darius is going to kill everybody this year with his size and destroy DB’s. He’s basically a Vernon Davis on the outside.

With the offensive line taking shape and getting real nasty, I’m sure Moniz will have a field day carving up defenses this year. I like the sound of a big, nasty, athletic offensive line vice the short and stout types. Regardless I would like to see our next big back laying the smack down again. Been missing that bulldozing West Keli’ikipi, Reagan Mauia, Nate Ilaoa type running back… but I think we got one brewing with Joey Iosefa… Like I said Jackson and Joey could be the next Tundah and Lightning show in the backfield…

  67. Stephen Tsai April 4, 2011 9:17 am

Anyone old enough to remember Delroy Shigematsu? Tall, very athletic, went on to play football at UNLV.

I’m drooling over the potential we have at the Receiver position. I have a feeling alot of them are gonna some how get on the field one way or another!

  76. Pauoa Boy April 4, 2011 9:27 am

Speaking of incoming guys, I’m excited about our secondary ballers coming in. Especially the freshmen guys Armstrong, Clay, Henderson, Van Ackeren (maybe a LB), Sellers, and Tigi Hill. Ijumaa seems to already have the strength and speed for the D1 level. Clay and Henderson could contribute instantly. I like Tigi at Safety and Van Ackeren too unless they get bigger. Edwards and the other transfer may be in the rotation instantly but I’m liking our future secondary…

Also can’t wait for our big LB’s and DE’s to come in the summer. Tavita seems like he could go right off the bat, Cofer and Alexis look big and fast. Also the big LB Daley got that Brian Urlacher size, just hope he plays like him. But the young guys Vele, Mamea, Gray, and Penitito has the potential to make our Warrior team Linebacker U for years to come. Can’t wait to see collisions on the field, violent hits, and bone breaking smash mouth football being played by our defense. We need to hit so hard that unborn children feel it!

Even if the games are shown for “free” on Oceanic you are already paying for the cable service. Any fee they may impose on top of that basic fee would be similar to PPV albeit at what would hopefully be a lower price per game than what was previously charged.

The university might rake in millions more than they do now. At least, one would hope!

I been jacked up for this season to start already since that Hawaii Bowl game. Even with our season ending in a Hawaii Bowl game, I still think we could’ve won more than just the 10 games we did last year. We lost some firepower with the top 3 offensive weapons from the arsenal in Green, Salas, and Pilares… but the main ingredient still remains and that’s bruddah Bryant Moniz. Back for his Senior year, ain’t nobody else in the WAC compares cause Boise Blue Balls Kellen Moore is gone, Cry Baby Crap-n-Shit is gone, and ain’t nobody else on Moniz’s level.

Darius Bright going be killaz this year with Royce already proven and ready to ball out his Senior year too. Stutz Deuce going get more chances to show why he is way better than his bruddah Craig. Miah going prove why he’s the next big thing besides Davone, Salas, Kealoha, etc… Plus add in the transfers Doe, Grant, etc, and the returnees…we get more than enough playmakers to get into the endzone often.

Sterling Jackson going bring that north-south running with his 10.7sec 100yd. dash speed, then get Joey Iosefa, the smash mouth bulldozer for just pound guys and remind us of West Keli’ikipi days when he made the USC guy look like he got Ka-Knockout from the stiff arm.

The Oline going come around and garrans going be mauling Dlines this year. Gotta get back to lifting guys off the line and pancake slammin them to the ground!

Defense I think going be rocking again…the DLine boys need to just pound all day long. Kaniela, Vaughn, Zach, etc…going be bruising the interior lineman. Then get the speed guys on the edge like Paipai “Da Gorilla” Falemalu collapsing the pocket and making the QB shi-shi pants. If he like try pull one Mike Vick how much you like bet either Corey Paredes, Aaron Brown, or GDL going put him to sleep by knocking the QB’s head off. Secondary with my man John Hardy-Tuliau is gonna be pick-sixin all day long. With Edwards and Leslie on the way and the incoming frosh too, offensive coordinators is gonna have long sleepness nights trying to figure out what to do against us.

Not onleh that, how much you wanna bet Coach Tomey going have our special teams do some spesho things this year. Dunnachie already proved he can pin guys deep with his booming leg. Then get Hadden who could be the next coming of Jason Elam… Plus we get some heat seaker missle type guys who just know how for seek and destroy anything in its path. Garrans we get couple blocked kicks, forced fumbles, punt returns and kick returns for touchdowns this year. Guys like Jordan Monico, Kamalani Alo, etc…is straight killahz fo reallaz!

    NFL Draft…

Me thinks Greg Salas could go 1st round if he had played on a BCS team with same numbers, but in reality will probably go in late 2nd round or defnitely by end of the 3rd. Alex Green is also in that mix and could go as high as 2nd round but reality tells me 3rd or 4th. Kealoha made a case for himself with his Pro Day performance but will that be enough to boost his stock as he has had injury issues…reality says later rounds, or free agency. Same with Mana Silva, his Senior year was his best and his numbers from Pro Day are eye-catching…he could slip into the later rounds but probably free agency too. The other boys like Pepa, Umu, etc… I think will all be free agents and will get a look from some teams…IMO. Obviously I am biased as hell with our Hawaii Boys, but thats what I’m thinking at the moment.

Even though they’ve pretty much settled on the 1st team receivers, I hope they keep giving the rest of the receiving corps plenty of touches and opportunities to master the routes, the lane blocking and catching techniques. The greater our depth of quality receivers, the better our chances of winning each and every game.

looks like a great game is in store for this pm at houston. many are saying that the real title game was on saturday, but those who think like that are poor losers. while many don’t give respect to either team, these 2 teams did their job and now play for the championship. can dream, so will uh be there in a few years. possible, but got to win the conference first.

  152. whitey April 4, 2011 2:13 pm

best wishes to our hilo tsaikos on saturday and know you will have a great time.

  157. al April 4, 2011 2:42 pm

mih…the starting point for receivers are a spring fling.

there’s a bevy of talent coming in the summer. all bets are off. the competition reopens then (drooling as i speak) it should be fun and it should be like this.

what with a first team all jc receiver amongs several highly regarded frosh yet to be looked at.

    yah, things are looking up.

  158. Pauoa Boy April 4, 2011 2:55 pm

As far as the recievers go, I think having Darius and Cecil Doe on the outside in goal line packages could be dangerous… I think Miah is a lock and hopefully Billy Ray stays put. Royce is the only starter returning and has the experience, he needs to ball out this year!

  159. al April 4, 2011 2:56 pm

    rd2 greg salas, seahawks

Would love to have Salas as a Seahawk. But, until we get a much better quarterback his talent would be pretty much wasted.

Just like in 2007 and 2009, I’ll be in Vegas to see the Warriors play this year and I’ll sit wherever Rich gets the Tsaiko group tickets. I didn’t see my name listed on the web page you set up, and I know you asked for RSVPs here.

  182. Garret April 4, 2011 4:38 pm

Unfortunately, I just need 1 ticket. My wife and kids will be in Vegas with me, but they will probably be in Circus Circus playing during the football game. They will make it to the buffet/cattle call before the game, just like in 2007 and 2009.

  183. Garret April 4, 2011 4:41 pm

I remember posting here about how SMU’s administration rejected 2 recruits really late and hoped that UH could get the huge OT…but it looks like Klemm’s bond with Cav ruled over his bond with UH.

Jackson was an NCAA qualifier – and Jones wanted him – but SMU administration rejected Jackson on the grounds that he didn’t meet the school’s own academic standards.

This, after Jackson had moved from Long Beach to Dallas at his own expense and began off-season workouts.

One of the first phone calls SMU offensive line coach Adrian Klemm made in an effort to find a new school for Jackson was to Oregon State offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh – who had coached Klemm at Hawaii.

he said he probably went through $1,000 of his own money during the SMU fiasco.

So far I’ve connected with BigHiloFan, Hilo Warrior, Kekoa, Kawika49! So glad to finally connect with the Tsaiko Ohana! DPK’s Ohana is making their party facilities available for us in Panaewa — about 10 minutes away from the stadium! We’ll have the grill going and so Far, Kawika pledged 10lbs Ahi to the festivities! Looks like Sashimi and Poke is on the menu for sure! I’ll have more details and information as the week progresses. Real easy to find stuff on the Big island — just go down dea, turn ova dea, go straight for about 5 minutes and den turn ova dea by the marungai tree!

It’s coming together rather nicely! Is the blog-master himself gonna make it to Hilo? If so, you gotta come by and try some of my home made Portuguese sausage — made with pigs right from my pasture! haaaa. Welcome to da country Tsaiko Ohana!

    should be interesting.

kanoa’s contract allows him to moonlight on oc16. perhaps a shared leahey broadcast team could work.

    baseball/softball – papa jim/pal

Do you think the point guard is the European currently attending high school/prep academy back east? Or do you think he’s is a jc player/star?

  259. jm2375 April 4, 2011 11:08 pm

would prefer to see someone other than papa leahey do volleyball. it’s gotten too fast for him. but since i won’t be able to watch anyway, whatevas.

  260. Curt April 4, 2011 11:10 pm

That shooting guard, Ryan Aaron, looks like an offensive weapon. He can slash and soar.

  261. kruzen April 4, 2011 11:11 pm

Will UH will have four pg in the coming year or will MO stick to football only?

  262. al April 4, 2011 11:21 pm

curt…one of the birdies say it is a jc pg who got game.

ryan aaron does not have hawaii on his list and neither do we it was mentioned by a reliable source.

  263. al April 4, 2011 11:22 pm

i am hoping that all of the signees are able to enroll here.

  264. al April 4, 2011 11:23 pm

i am not ruling out the european.

  265. al April 4, 2011 11:29 pm

the thing with our pg’s is…

miah won’t be joining the bball team until after the hawaii bowl.

bobby miles may see more time next year at the two or develop better handles

jace tavita is also not eligible until the second semester starts, that is january.

gerry blakes will probably settle in behind zane johnson.

this new guy will fit in quite comfortably

  266. Curt April 4, 2011 11:33 pm

Thanks al. Sounds like we might have a player in the jc pg. Can’t wait to see what happens.

  267. Curt April 4, 2011 11:37 pm

I guess I can go home now from the airport. Moses neva show. Alcindor II neva show. But al guarans that the jc pg will show. I ken sleep well now…cause it’s after April Fool’s Day and al no ken pull another fast one on me until next April 1.

  268. Ralph April 4, 2011 11:42 pm

didn’t Salter receive the same hype last season as the incoming jc pg?

  269. Curt April 4, 2011 11:48 pm

You’re right. Salt got alot of hype…and also alot of attitude. I wonder whatever happened to him? He probably is forced to go to a lower division school in order to play ball right away and not lose his senior season. What a tough road.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
