Monday ramblings

• Despite the one-sided victory over Fresno State, no Warrior was named WAC Player of the Week.

• That’s a shame because Jeramy Bryant, who was UH’s nominee for top defensive player, had a strong game against FS. It wasn’t just he pick-6. He made a few open-field tackles to stop first downs.

In case this isn’t seen at the bottom of yesterday’s blog:

Some key points from this article about Aloha Stadium:

    1. The maintenance repairs that were supposed to take 4 years are instead going to take at least 8 years. No revised cost estimate is provided, which means that it will be quite a bit more than the $185 million previously estimated.

    2. DAGS Director Russ Saito says that a new stadium site needs to be found now if it will be ready by the time Aloha Stadium’s maintenance projects are in need of replacement in 20 years.

    3. Saito estimates that the new turf for Aloha Stadium will cost *$3 million*. I did a study of the turf projects at colleges around D-IA on this blog a month or so ago and found that the normal replacement cost to get a new turf is about $700k, though some pay a little less and others like Oregon go top-of-the-line and pay about $1 million.

    4. Aloha Stadium manager Scott Chan says that the state of Hawaii will pay *ALL $3 million* for the turf replacement–he says that the NFL is not kicking in any money like they did last time for the turf.

    5. The Aloha Stadium Authority does not plan to add luxury boxes or any other amenities to the stadium.

Where the stats too evenly spread around for no Warrior to get WAC Player of the Week? Why wouldn’t the WAC want to honor players from the first WAC6 team to beat one of the defecting teams?

  5. Garret October 11, 2010 6:36 am

    “Where” should be “were”

  6. Cheyah! October 11, 2010 6:42 am

    Go Warriors! WAC da Pack!

  7. expat October 11, 2010 6:43 am

Garret, I think that would go against the WAC’s ongoing “head in the sand” policy.

  8. 99club October 11, 2010 6:46 am

    From a NV site:

Vai Taua has been named the WAC Offensive Player of the week for his 196-yard, three-touchdown performance in Nevada’s 35-13 win over San Jose State.

I was wearing a UH volleyball t-shirt to my kids’ school carnival yesterday and a very nice woman stopped me to ask if I was a UH volleyball fan. It turned out that she was a teammate of Tee Williams on the USA National team and they played in the Olympics together. She had good things to say about Tee.

It sure is a small world. Her kids go to the same Elementary school as my kids and we were all volunteering at the carnival together. Lots of Padre players’ wives were also volunteering because I guess their kids go to the school, so we had lots of autographed Padre stuff in the fundraising auction.

    GO WARRIORS!!! WAC the Pack!

  15. Rich2176 October 11, 2010 7:01 am

Grest seeing everyone at Fresno. The Bay area chapter of the alumni association sure knows how to throw a party!

Just noticed that the Warriors are 7 1/2 point favorites this week against Nevada which I think is interesting since the wolfpack is ranked 19 and 21 in the two polls and UH doens’t even get one vote. I’m liking the disprespect to UH. Just go out there, knock heads, and get the job done.

Siting in the box w/ JD, we had the UH coaches on one side and the press on the other – separated by glass windows. Our coaches in the box work very hard. Not sure how old Mouse is, but he was one of the most animated folks there.

Every time UH got a first down, we did our own “It’s another Warrior First Down”. The people in the press box were slightly amused. It was really sad for the Fresno crowd as they started leaving right after the 4th quarter started. Even after they would get another first down, the P.A. announcer gave up his cheer of “It’s another Fresno State first down.” The two most populated sections in the stadium when the clock ran out in the forth quarter were Section 24 – UH Fans, and the other side of the stadium – the Fresno band. Was chilling to see the team do the haka after the game.

So, my buddy who came to Fresno with me was in the spirit of wearing a green shirt and sitting with the UH folks. We agreed to meet at the car after the game. 45 minutes later, still no Dave. Finally, get a call from him, and he’s about a mile from the stadium. I guess Fresno cops don’t know the parking lots, or just gave “wrong” directions to anyone wearing green. Hmmm….

  16. jm2375 October 11, 2010 7:02 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos.

    Top 20!

Perhaps the stats were too evenly spread around, although JB should’ve gotten the Defensive POW award. Anywhos, Slugger is right, no love for UH.

Congrats to the Tuioti family on their new addition! (Do they really have 7 kids?)

  17. Hank October 11, 2010 7:03 am

  18. pakegold October 11, 2010 7:03 am

No need WAC POW, just keep winning and get WAC Championship!

  19. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:04 am

Taua had a big run that gave him most of the yardage, against SJSU. Salas had a complete game as a receiver, aganist Fresno State. Hank took the words right out of my mouth!

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2010 7:04 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

We’ll just have to get the POTW awards next week when we dump the Wolf Pack.

Every UH Warrior deserved an award this week!

  21. Joe October 11, 2010 7:10 am

I agree with pakegold – forget the WAC player of the week awards (although I think Salas was very deserving). Being WAC champs would be much more satisfying! Let’s beat the Wolf Pack this week!

  22. chopsueyboy October 11, 2010 7:10 am

    I just voted (for today).

Vote for Bryant Moniz / Davey O’Brien Award.

A vote for MO is also a vote for putting HAWAII on the map.

    He is at #30

MO has to finish in top 16 to advance.

    http://www.voteobrien.org/round1.asp

  23. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:14 am

First Hewitt, and now this? Seems like the WAC is pissed at Hawaii for something.

  24. expat October 11, 2010 7:14 am

Just keep winning. I believe this is our 32nd year in the WAC. During that time we have only won 1 outright conference championship (along with a share in 1992 and 1999). And only once were we undefeated in conference play.

Of the current WAC members only LaTech and Boise State have also won the championship outright.

Nevada has never done it and it is our turn to make sure that they do not leave the conference on a high note. Hawaii has had Nevada’s number, especially at home. We need to own them.

The journey started two weeks ago and with each game it becomes a bigger challenge.

Here is something for the guys to take away. In the magical 2007 season it took overtime to beat LaTech. This year we whumped them. Fresno State went down the wire and was a one possession game. This year? Well, we all saw that.

Nevada went down to that twice kicked field goal in 2007. SJSU went into overtime. The Warriors can still do something that even the Sugar Bowl team could not — which is to dominate the conference. Beat each conference team by at least two possessions. The 2007 squad was only 4-4 in keeping the games to better than that.

So far our conference average margin is 21 pts. That is a nice round football number so let’s keep that average going against Nevada. We haven’t beaten them soundly since 2004 so it is about time.

In 2007 the guys beat FSU and LaTech by a combined score of 8 pts. This year, 42 points. That is sending a statement.

  26. Shoko October 11, 2010 7:16 am

    Morning folks!

Voted as well. Was looking at Kellen Moore’s number of votes. Yikes!

  27. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:20 am

As long as we get Moniz into the top 16, somehow. It will come down to his performance, and the votes of all of those reporters that make up the Selection Committee, because many of the QB’s ahead of Moniz now aren’t really that good. Guess they just got lots of people voting for them on computers at the moment. So, the Selection Committe will determine the final 16 that move on to round two of the voting, and it starts over with a clean slate.

  28. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:22 am

Concerning the Selection Committee, I didn’t see a single name from Hawaii.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2010 7:26 am

I just cast one “Mo” vote for Moniz.

  33. 99club October 11, 2010 7:34 am

…and from a New Mexico St. site:

Englewood, Colo. – Junior defensive lineman Donte Savage and freshman place kicker Tyler Stampler have been named WAC Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively as announced by the conference office Monday morning. This is the first WAC Player of the Week awards for the Aggies this season.

Savage, a native of Portland, Ore., had a career night for the Aggies in a 16-14 win over New Mexico. He led the team with nine tackles, while recording the Aggies’ first two sacks of the season. He also tallied four tackles for a loss of 33 yards and forced two fumbles, one of which gave NM State the ball back and led to the game-winning field goal. Savage also recorded two pass break-ups.

Stampler, from Lauderdale, Fla., hit three field goals in the Aggies’ win over New Mexico, 16-14. He recorded a long of 39 yards in the first quarter, followed by a 34 yarder late in the same quarter. Stampler would hit the game-winning field goal with just 1:56 left in the game, a 22-yard attempt. Stampler becomes the first Aggie kicker to hit three field goals in a game since Nov. 6, 2004.

The Aggies travel to Fresno, Calif., this week to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs beginning at 8:30 p.m. (MT). The game will be televised on ESPNU.

    From yesterday:

    al: October 11th, 2010 at 12:31 am

this week the wac is rated the 7th best conference ahead of the mwc, big east, and conference usa.

Michigan Warrior: October 11th, 2010 at 3:13 am

#381… Al… Like I said a week or two ago. What if our defectors don’t defect? Let the MWC fall flat on it’s face… and we take their place, eventually.

    Utah is leaving.

Still don’t know exactly what BYU is doing in football.

Dont’ get why TCU would move to a weaker C-USA.

All the MWC would have left is Air Force! Are you serious? Boise State, Fresno State, and Nevada need to wake up! Plus, our junkest team beat their junkest team! LOL

  35. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:43 am

Oh, I see… the WAC is trying to stroke NMSU so that they up their win streak to two games. Well, good luck in beating a tee’d off Fresno State team! Maybe Leilehua’s Manley will get the job done for the Aggies!

  41. CoolEthan October 11, 2010 7:54 am

Beating Nevada this Saturday will trump over any award.

Wonder if ESPN would consider dropping the NMSU @ Fresno show, and agree to air the Nevada game instead?

    They would have stronger ratings.

ST, can you get on the Red phone hotline and make that suggestion?

  42. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 7:54 am

Perhaps Charleston Southern’s coach was more correct in his assesment and comparison than we initially thought!

Maybe more reason for Hawaii to move their other sports to the Big West and take their football where it will benefit UH the most, eh? If that means staying with the WAC so be it… but if it means something else, having the other teams safely tucked away in a West Coast conference may be a blessing.

  62. Ipu Man October 11, 2010 8:50 am

  64. Ipu Man October 11, 2010 8:53 am

I support the unions and hope they would step up

  65. (Jesse) James October 11, 2010 8:57 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

My apologies to all the Tsaikos who went to Giovanni’s on Saturday. My mom was released from the hospital @ the exact same time the game was on. Tried to let other Tsaikos who were going to be there know what had happened and that I would be late. However, by the time the paperwork was completed and I got my mom home it was almost the third quarter so I decided that I wouldn’t go down to Giovanni’s. I really wanted to go because besides the good friends who would be there, I heard the food was also supposed to be good. Next time.

Thanks to all who have been calling to find out my status and who were concerned as to where I have been. I am okay, I think……MWAHAHAHAHAH….

    Again my apologies….

  66. CoolEthan October 11, 2010 9:06 am

    Ipu

“The unions stepping up and figuring it out”

    That’s an oxymoron.

There the reason why this mess is happening.

  67. Old School Dave October 11, 2010 9:09 am

Just win, baby!! That’s the bottom line. Gives more ammo to UH to in order to take care of all this conference affiliation or going independent dilemma.

Funny how much a win helps with dealing with another Monday at work. Everyone seems to be in good mood 🙂

  68. Kazz blogging via DROID X October 11, 2010 9:11 am

Taua didnt deserve anything. Much like Nevada’s invite to the MWC, t’was by DEFAULT.

    Warrior stats too spread out.

Warriors had the tougher opponent and Nevada had SJSU.

  69. (Jesse) James October 11, 2010 9:12 am

In the 2008-2009 fiscal year…the State appropriated $3.3 million for plans, design, construction, and equipment for the new field turf and track improvements for Leilehua High School.

  70. Old School Dave October 11, 2010 9:12 am

Sorry, I meant: “Everyone seems to be in ‘A’ good mood.” I can hear my old English teacher from high school slapping my head for that.

On the stadium, I still like the Ala Wai Golf Course for a new stadium site. I’ve mentioned that using the canal for transporting fans is an overlooked idea. But then again, I don’t golf 🙂

On the stadium. No plans for luxury/corporate boxes? Gee, wouldn’t that be a great way to generate more $$? Even I-AA schools have luxury boxes in their smaller stadiums. The existing press box looks very cramped and I think I hear Papa Leahy complaining about this. More reason to consider building a new stadium and letting UH run it. Wishful thinking?

  76. gigi-hawaii October 11, 2010 9:20 am

I keep wondering if those of you who picked a FSU victory were amazed by the UH victory. How shocked were you?

Although I voted with my heart and picked a UH victory, it still was shocking for me to see the lopsided score. Wow!

  77. Kazz blogging via DROID X October 11, 2010 9:22 am

    Bowwar

Nevada is the SAME Nevada team we’ve playes the last two seasons. If anything last season was more of a threat with Lippencott still around to add to Taua and CK.

    They’re ranked and SO WHAT?

Nevda has YET to bring their A game against the Warriors.

Even last season at Reno, Nevada wasnt able to manhandle and injury-ridden dilapidated UH defense…

I have NO respect for this program especially considering their undeserved invite to the Mountain West.

  78. gigi-hawaii October 11, 2010 9:24 am

    Kazz,

I didn’t know today was a holiday, cause I thought Martin Luther King Day replaced Discoverers Day.

Damn typos. I tried the SWYPE feature on my Droid. Never again.

Its the feature that allows one to text or type by literally swiping your finger from letter to letter to type. Its like playing connect the dots with the letters on the touchscreen keyboard.

    It takes practice.

Leilehua’s field probably has the newest turf. It was on O16 against Mililani right after the UH game. I think it costs approx.$1 mil, but my concern is in 5 years, how will we get the money to replace it. I know that Leilehua is always raining and the field is always a mud pit so having a field turf there is good, but when it starts to wear down, with Hawaii’s red tape, how long will it take before they get the money to replace it? In the mean time, where will their games be played? All road games? I understand that Mililani High School is also under consideration for field turf. Do the teams with field turf practice on the turf? Everyday use will wear down the field sooner. Not only for football and JV football, but girls soccer, girls jv soccer, boys soccer, track and field, band (yes, the band uses the field for practice and competitions), and also other outside of school events, like summer fun track and field state championships, Pop Warner championships, church events, football Pro day, etc.. Although Mililani’s field looks mostly green from the highway, if you go down to the field, you realize that its about 98% weeds (I don’t know what they call it, but its the big weeds, the kine that if you step on it wrong, you can easily sprain your ankle) and the rest is either real hard, dried dirt with footprints and holes or mud. They also don’t have any practice fields for their other sports other than the outfield of their baseball field. Leilehua’s field turf was started after last football season and was completed in time for this football season. Their soccer teams played all their games on the road last year.

Gigi…today is a federal holiday. It is no longer a State or county holiday. Those were replaced with Martin Luther King Day.

hmmm. So how come the public schools are closed today.

  86. OldDiver October 11, 2010 9:35 am

It appears the level of competition is not a factor in choosing WAC players of the week.

Yup last I looked we are still 8 point dogs.

Gigi…#85, Public schools on all fall break

  88. gmahoney October 11, 2010 9:42 am

    gigi,

According to my public school calendar, it is an employee furlough day.

  89. papajoe2 October 11, 2010 9:42 am

Nevaddie’s defense seems to have improved a great deal since previous seasons. Yes, we should be worried about Kapearnick, Taua, and co. but we also must be weery of their “d”. We must take care of the ball, continue to improve on special teams, take care of the ball, ELIMINATE the penalties, take care of the ball, cause some turnovers, and did I mention, take care of the ball.

  90. papajoe2 October 11, 2010 9:48 am

When I went to public school, we only had holidays off, and less holidays too. Now days they have all kinds of days off. Teacher need rest, study or class for teachers, teachers meetings, union meetings, not to mention last years 17 days of furlough or even furloughs of other employees within the school system. With todays’ attitude of the kids, it is very hard being a teacher. Just cannot send them to the principle’s office to get paddled.

  91. Jason October 11, 2010 9:49 am

It was supposed to be Teacher Institute Day for teachers on Oʻahu; that was given up as one of the six furlough days for this year.

Note: For those who thought there were no furlough days anymore for educators, all six days are on non-instructional days (when students weren’t going to be in school, anyways).

  92. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 9:50 am

For some odd reason, while watching the Fresno game, and thinking this might be the last time the Warriors play at Fresno for years to come… I started recalling Hawaii 5-0 whenever the Warriors needed a big hit… and Queen’s “Another one bites the dust.” whenever the Warriors made that big hit.

  93. Pomai October 11, 2010 9:59 am

I graduated from Leilehua technically last school year but earlier this year an they started putting in the turf at about I would estimate it at around December they said they would finish by March but ended up rushing in May for they worked on it when ever it didnt rain an well we live in Wahiawa so yeah but I would say it took 5 months for Leilehua I would assume if they were to do returfing it would take lesser in a area if a)it doesnt rain b)the Workers I dont know Work. Everytime I checked up on how it was looking the workers were sitting down talking story nothing.

  96. Jason October 11, 2010 10:05 am

  97. whitey October 11, 2010 10:15 am

From Parade Magazine about immigrants moving to America:

Since Iraqi women are accustomed to raising their children communally, they can feel isolated in the U.S., Zainab says. “Back home, families have aunts, sisters, and neighbors who watch the children too. If your kid misbehaves outside, he gets spanked in the street, and parents thank the neighbors for spanking them. Here no one has help.”

This is basically what is lacking in today’s kids. No discipline, parents crybabying, and no respect for teachers. Crack em if they deserve it. No hurt nobody except make kid’s mom and dad more responsible cause they no like the shame it brings to the family.

Some people didn’t think that Hawaii couldn’t beat Fresno St. Garrett was one of them. Another one was Dave Reardon. What’s up w/ Reardon? He probably will take Nevada this week. He’s not convinced that Hawaii is a good football team. I believe that this Hawaii football team is getting better every week. The offense is playing at a high level and scoring points. The defense is making some plays and getting some turnovers, 3 interceptions each of the last 2 games. The special teams IS getting better, especially with Dustin Blount returning kickoffs and not giving up big yardage. We will score a lot of points against Nevada. Nevada will score some points too and it looks to be a high scoring shootout. But, I like our chances at home. My prediction later this week after a little more study. I said last week that Hawaii would score 49 points. Right on the nose! I said Fresno St. would not score, 0. But, we let em off the hook and they scored 27. The last touchdown we gave up was a garbage touchdown. Hawaii WILL beat Nevada this week.

How things have changed and how the mighty has fallen. Florida has lost the last 2 games, Penn St. has lost the last 2 games, Texas has lost the last 2 games, USC as lost the 2 games. Now, 3 of them, Florida, USC, and Texas stand a good chance of losing this week, against Mississippi St., California, and Nebraska. Luckily, Penn St. if off this week. When was the last time these 4 teams lost 2 in a row. I can’t remember. And, when was the last time BYU is an underdog this week by 29 1/2 points against at TCU. Never! Two teams that have been down this decade is coming back, Nebraska and Florida State. I believe Notre Dame won’t lose another game this year and will even beat USC this year.

Greg Salas is playing like an All-American. He’s catching everything w/ yards after catch, in traffic, spectaculer grabs. He leads the nation in total receptions and receiving yards right now.

  104. sportsforfun October 11, 2010 10:26 am

Not to disrespect Jim Leahey because he is an icon in UH sports, but I didn’t enjoy Jim Leahey doing play by play. Shawn Ching doing color wasn’t much better in my opinion. I think a change is in order. Maybe passing the mic torch to the “next generation” is in order for Mr. Leahey.

  107. whitey October 11, 2010 10:30 am

derek, it is basically good to have ying and yang from the HA. this keeps our warriors from getting big headed and makes them perform at a higher level. sometimes i think like you about dr, but basically he writes a good story from facts he reserarched.

  108. whitey October 11, 2010 10:32 am

You are absolutely right. Leahey was good, he now absolutely sucks. He constantly is mistaking players and continuously makes up words that is no where to be found in the english language. He is an icon but the sun sets on everyone.

good gloomy monday morning tsaiko’s and tsaikett’s

firstly congrats to warrior fball team on a great road win. defiantly put dem dogs in their place….sit ubu sit UH did that…. bwhaaaa. totally a team win and have to admit did not expect a “w” but damn glad it happened.

adding more congrats to the UH ohana aka wahine soccer team also taking on the dogs and putting a win over them. how sweet was last weekend.

as for the WAC can’t control or comment on idiots. time to seriously consider what the WAC means to UH. they have been excellent, considerate and accommodating members since joining. what else must be done before UH is given it due respect as the senior member.

  114. sportsforfun October 11, 2010 10:41 am

Interesting note on the Nevada/San Jose game. Nevada came out throwing on 5 of 6 plays on their opening drive. The score came off of a busted pass play where Colin Kaepernick scrambled for the touchdown.

  115. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 10:44 am

On Nevada’s two opening drives against San Jose, they only ran once. I guess they’re trying to loosen up the 8 in the box defenses for future games.

  122. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 10:59 am

    sportsforfun,

Nevada has scored on each of their first possessions this season. It’s sets their momentum and is one heck of a confidence boost for the team. Warriors need to really focus early and stop them their first possession and put the seed of doubt into their heads.

I find it very disturbing that it costs less than $800,000 to install field turf on the mainland and $3,000,000 in Hawaii — big WHY? Does it cost nearly $2,000,000 to ship the material? Some one or more than someone is taking Hawaii for a ride and lining their pockets!!!!!!!!!!

  134. Garret October 11, 2010 11:28 am

    Derek,

You are WRONG when you said that I didn’t think that UH couldn’t beat Fresno State. I posted my score prediction earlier in the week, but if you noticed after I read up on Fresno State and studied their roster and injuries, I posted *before* the game that I thought that UH could win the game. I said *before* the game that I would have changed my score prediction if it hadn’t been after Pomai’s cutoff time. If I could have changed it, I would have picked UH to win a close game…I wouldn’t have predicted a blowout win, but to say that I didn’t think that UH could have beaten Fresno State is simply wrong.

This week Nevada doesn’t have anybody injured (it appears they will have their entire 2-deep healthy for the UH game), but the Warriors are on a roll and Nevada hasn’t played well in Hawaii. They haven’t beaten UH in Hawaii for more than 60 years and I don’t think they will start now…not with UH on this much of a roll.

This week my entry into Pomai’s contest will be:

    UH 55, Nevada 42

  135. OldDiver October 11, 2010 11:29 am

Great piece on Corey Paredes on the Coach Mac Show last night. My son has classes with and hangs around many of the football players we see on Saturday. Despite his ferocious nature on the field my son says Corey is one of the smartest (in the classroom) and nicest of the bunch.

  136. OldDiver October 11, 2010 11:32 am

So Garret you were wrong just like me who thought Hawaii was going to win a close one. Just letting you know you were in great company.

  137. NCAA October 11, 2010 11:34 am

    Mr. Garret,

Well Nevada didn’t win big at SJSU but at least the game will be televised on ESPN3.

Warriors played tough this past Saturday. It was a very exciting game to watch!

The Fresno QB did break away from the pocket for decent gains. Hopefully, the Warrior D will not let that happen to Nevada’s QB and make him pay for trying.

Garret, I only went with what was posted on the scores posted by Pomai. Same by Dave Reardon who predicts his scores on Friday w/ Bob Curran, The Sports Animals, etc. Be that is may, it is not important and we are just having some fun and enjoy all the comments being made on the blogs.

What is important is that our Warriors got a very big win, a very convincing one on the road at Fresno St. I was not surprised because Hawaii has won at Fresno St. in the past 2 years prior to last Saturday. So, some good vibes there. Plus, Hawaii had motivation to atone from last year’s loss at home so the team was thinking pay back or revenge. But, the feeling this year is that this Hawaii offense can score a lot of points and Moniz is getting better and better with each game. The QB for us is HUGE, just like when Colt Brennan was playing. It feels like Hawaii can score every time we get the ball. The key is not making stupid mistakes and turning the ball over. Efficiency is the name of the game.

On top of that, we are getting some good feelings that the defense, while giving up some yards and scores, are getting some key turnovers on interceptions (3 each of the last 2 games). However, I would like to see the special teams get better.

This week, I think it will be a close game, a very high scoring game. It might come down to who has the ball last. It wouldn’t shock me if the total score might exceed 100. My prediction on Wednesday later. Still studying the statistics. The spread opening line started at -9 to -9 1/2. It is down to -7 to -7 1/2, meaning people are jumping on Hawaii. It is always a premium getting points at home. It’s just like money in the bank, almost!!!!! Good luck this week.

Do they use a higher quality field turf in Aloha stadium than in the high school stadiums? Does the $3 million include improving the drainage at Aloha Stadium? Those are possible reasons for a higher cost than the local high schools. There may also be more extra turf (sidelines, behind the end zones, etc.) at Aloha Stadium than in most high school stadiums.

Still, this doesn’t explain the cost of the turf here being more than 3 times higher than comparable jobs on the mainland. Yes, it costs a lot to ship the materials, but double what it costs for the materials themselves? I think not. Instead of the palm greasing, open the bidding up to anyone worldwide. Have no requirements to use local unionized labor. Doing that will probably save the state a million dollars.

I still say that they should auction off the old turf. Saves on the cost of disposal and makes a little bit of money. If they want to make even more money, UH could somehow identify locations that key plays took place. For example, the spot on the field from which Colt threw the pass to RGM that beat the Huskies and sent the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl. Those “special” sections of turf could then be auctioned off separately. If they’re too lazy for that, they can sell off sections of the “H” logo and sections of the end zones for a premium price. Heck, you might even find some rich UH fan that would buy the entire “H” logo in one big piece. Maybe the Tsaikos can pool their money and buy the “H” logo for the tailgate.

I think the $3mil at leilehua included the track too. I’m not too sure about that because I didn’t notice it (wasn’t looking for it) on the TV. A few years ago, the rubberized track at Mililani cost $1mil. It was used for all kinds of track meets, even if the host team wasn’t there.

I called the WAC office to nominate Powder Puff for WAC fan of the week. They hung up on me, after they told me that Hawaii already has had too many weekly awards this year and is not getting anymore this season. They said that if they give Hawaii too many weekly awards then they will be forced to put the Hawaii guys on the season ending All WAC team. They are trying to save those awards for the two golden-boy programs, that are already ranked in the top twenty-five. Hawaii is being a nuisance about it is what they said.

BCS ranking are out. Boise State #1, TCU #2. Hahahaha. The radio guys was kinda of mad with that. They said that Alabama should be #2 even though they lost to South Carolina at USC’s house. Made all kinds of excuses like SC was really up for the game and made some great plays to win. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Alabama should have made some great plays to win too but didn’t. I don’t know who was on 1420 at about 1:00 pm but they must be from here as they were talking about Salas’ hit of the Dback for Fresyes (to MWC). Bottom line= Alabama had just as much chances before that game but, lost it during that game.

  202. papajoe2 October 11, 2010 1:30 pm

Ok, I stand corrected about the BCS ranking. I heard it in my car while starting it up.

  203. Kaimuki Kid October 11, 2010 1:31 pm

My thinking is that after a big win on the road, historically the attendance at the stadium went up about 10,000 fans. I am expecting around 37,000 people in the stands this coming week, even though Nevada is ranked. Sitting in the south end zone @ the LA Tech game I was real disappointed in the turnout, heck there was still parking in the lower Halawa lot when we went into the game around 4:45 pm. We really need to support the team and fill up the stands and not wait around on our hands for more victories.

Anyone remember the home game against New Mexico in the early 80’s that was plyed in the driving rainstorm? I think about 8,000 fans braved the wind and the rain that night. We even had the Rainbow Cheerleaders huddling under our tent after the game as they went around to collect aluminum cans after the game. Back then they didn’t really enforce the size of the shelter you could put up and we put up our swap meet tent that day and left it with our cars parked under it during the game. Talk about being soaked to the bone. My point is, We need to be fans not fair weather fans. GO WARRIORS!!!!

Didn’t the builders say something about the rust on the surfaces, like it’s a protective coating that’s beneficial to the longevity of the structure? Are we really that lame that we’re gonna take dumb stuff like that as their final answer? And now this outrageous cost plus an additional few years to get nothing done?

As for the BCS rankings… in the BCS section of Sagarin’s rankings, he has Boise State #1, and TCU #2. It was in the link that Garret (I think) provided on yesterday’s blog.

  228. moocher October 11, 2010 2:52 pm

the reason why field turf costs so much here is because our people in the coooooshy state jobs will over estimate in order to turn in good numbers.

The state employee, “Hey boss, we estimated it was 3 million-it was 1 million, I saved the state 2 million.”

The state boss, “Ahhh good work (thinking to himself, this will move me up to a director’s position and I will take my employee with me to be a manager-maybe I can go into politics then also.”

Repairs on the stadium-I was in the union and we did “repairs/maintenance” back in the ’90’s. Yes, I was union and we duraggggged our feet so we got more pay. A lot of it was cost plus, then there were change orders which got the companies fatter in the wallet and in exchange the unions would of course “endorse” candidates. It’s hawaii politics-It’s all over politics. Our small economy cannot absorb this kind of arrogant and selfish waste.

Now, I am in Singapore doing some work and although they have a dictator ruling the place, I have truly seen how governments operate with efficiency-our state has a long way to go. I would not trade hawaii my home for anything, but when you leave the islands for a bit and see things, you realize how our mom and dad’s style of voting back in the same person “just because” is really the wrong way to go.

On another note, Jim Leahey (sp), the voice I grew up with (but might have spelled his name wrong), I hope he retires while he still has such a high level of respect and admiration. With kids being high tech and producing their own shows, I can definitely see Jim working with our young people and instead of one day passing the mic to one person-he can pass it on to many. Hey Jim, if you open up a sort of academy-I get first dibbs as a managing partner aye 🙂

I am loving the Warriors-always have, always will.

  229. NCAA October 11, 2010 2:54 pm

From my perspective, Taua deserved the POW award. Salas was nominated for offense as was Bryant and Dunnachie for defense and special teams respectively.

    One WR out for Nevada.

Wolf Pack wide receiver Chris Wellington will miss Saturday’s game at Hawaii and perhaps longer with a knee injury, Nevada coach Chris Ault said after Monday’s practice. With his right knee heavily bandaged, Wellington watched practice from the sidelines wearing a T-shirt and shorts.

  233. Garret October 11, 2010 2:58 pm

If we want to think of players that have been overlooked for WAC Player of the Week, Nevada’s stud DE has a strong case. He’s possibly going to set the all-time record for sacks for the WAC..and he’s *never* been player of the week.

Wolf Pack defensive end Dontay Moch was Nevada’s nominee after a nine-tackle, five-tackles-for-loss performance against SJSU. While Savage clearly deserved the award this week, it is interesting to note that Moch — who set the WAC record for most career TFL on Saturday and is third in league history in sacks — has never won a WAC player of the week award. He has 33 tackles this season, including three sacks and two forced fumbles. His 11 tackles for loss this year are tied for the eighth most in the nation.

Regarding the field turf. I’m not that knowledgeable in government procurement practices but with a price tag that high wouldn’t the State be required to have entities submit bids for the field turf and the State would then select the lowest bidder? I would question the State in their selection process/criteria especially when it was posted earlier on how much it costs to install turf in other venues.

You are right. But more often then nought, this is how it goes.

Contractor A- submits bid 1 million

    Contractor B- 2 million

    Contractor C- 3 million

On the books and the reports to media- estimated costs 3 million. Even though they will choose contractor A at 1 million, the state will say “estimated” 3 million and they are not lying. What they are doing is trying to in the end tell you we “saved” money through good governance and re-elect me.

  240. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 3:18 pm

I like the way they rebuilt the roads and freeways after the 1994 Earthquake in Southern Cal… the lowest bidder had a bonus clause that for each day he beat the deadline, his company would get X number of dollars. They raced around the clock and had all of the repairs done well ahead of time and kept the traffic flowing in the most desperate of times.

  241. Shoko October 11, 2010 3:19 pm

The Packs Dontay Moch, last years D POY, is definitely a force the Warriors O-line need to contain. The guy ran a 4.08 Forty in the combine. Only problem is that he has trouble changing direction. But then again if you run that fast at a weight of 250 pounds, thats to be expected. I remember watching the Nevada-UNLV game and seen Moch catch up to the Rebels Omar Clayton when he scrambled up the middle. Moch caught up to Omar so fast it almost appeared Clayton was standing still.

  242. moocher October 11, 2010 3:23 pm

  244. Shoko October 11, 2010 3:27 pm

Well, according to reports, NFL scouts timed Moch and he ran a 4.18 and they couldn’t believe it. So they asked him to run again and he clocked 4.08. Still in disbelief, the scouts had him run it a third time and his time was 4.2. I think that is the fasted forty ever recorded. The guy is freakishly fast for his size. From what I heard, he was a track star in H.S.

  245. Matt October 11, 2010 3:27 pm

#241. 4.08 Forty?? No way, that’s legit. That would make Chris Johnson look like he’s standing still.

  247. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 3:33 pm

    Mahalo, Wafan!!!

Did you take high tea at the Empress?

  257. wafan October 11, 2010 4:48 pm

Thanks, too, to whomever posted the link to the Fresno haka!

  258. moocher October 11, 2010 4:55 pm

i dont think there is a db in college or the nfl who wants to see someone 250lbs running 4.08 straight at them looking to do a “salas.” a guy like that in the open field who has the option to run away from you or through you is just madness. Maybe someone like that could have kept the XFL alive.

whatever happen to “He hate me”

  259. Michigan Warrior October 11, 2010 5:02 pm

Anyways, they announce the winner of the Marching Band contest around the 45-minute point in the show… at the beginning of a normal commercial break.

  260. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2010 5:03 pm

Rod “He Hate Me” Smart currently lives in Charlotte, NC and works with high school students as a counselor.

  261. Shoko October 11, 2010 5:11 pm

Regarding, Moch. The guys built like a brick wall. He has speed, but no agility which is something required of RBs and WRs. When he came to Nevada, he was slated for safety then linebacker and eventally defensive end. Probably due to his lack of agility at those positions. It was mentioned that he is still learning to play DE, but is continually improving.

Heres the USA article I read about him.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/wac/2010-08-18-preview-nevada-dontay-moch_N.htm

  262. Shoko October 11, 2010 5:12 pm

I swear, if the UH marching band doesn’t win after the countless votes I submitted, Imma gonna be mad. Well, maybe just a little…

  263. gmahoney October 11, 2010 5:17 pm

Mahalo all, for the shout out for my mom’s 75th birthday. She’s in good company with Michigan Warrior.

  264. Shoko October 11, 2010 5:19 pm

Wow, congrats to Brett Farvre 500th TD. Maybe now he retires? 😉

  265. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 5:20 pm

Wow… I think it’s embarrassing that a school as far EAST as Maryland won the 5-0 band contest.

  266. ai-eee-soos October 11, 2010 5:21 pm

    I voted for today.

Vote for Bryant Moniz / Davey O’Brien Award.

A vote for MO is also a vote for putting HAWAII on the map.

He is at #29, with 282 votes.

    # 28 has 309 votes.

MO has to finish in top 16 to advance.

  267. Matt October 11, 2010 5:33 pm

    Favre now has 501.

mih – THANK U for spoiling it 4 everyone!

  269. sportsforfun October 11, 2010 5:36 pm

    @#213 (Jesse) James

Thanks for the invite. I’ll see how my schedule is for Saturday…

  270. jm2375 October 11, 2010 5:41 pm

    huh – #268 – it’s already on the website.

Re Davey O’Brien Award – fan votes count for *5%*. There’s a big difference in the # of votes between Mo at #29 and #16 who has 1700+ votes. I think if we can get him into the top 25, they’ll at least take a look at his stats and he’s got a good chance. Would help if UH had a good record by then, so gotta beat the other WAC guys on the list ahead of him – Kaepernick (currently #20) and Moore (currently #1 😯 ).

  271. Shoko October 11, 2010 5:42 pm

Are the Jets going to win by only making FGs?

  272. huh October 11, 2010 5:48 pm

jm – that may be true, but you didn’t see michigan warrior (who already seen this week’s episode) say anything….i know understand how al feels.

  273. wafan October 11, 2010 5:58 pm

  290. UHfan808 October 11, 2010 7:34 pm

@Warriors – Keep working hard and smarter (ref. Prideperiod), make each play work successfully, and the stats will be painted red and undeniably truer than true.

Focus on yourself, and figure out how you can contribute to working even better together as a team.

Make a goal where you want to be, and keep thinking constant improvement.

  291. LizKauai (iPad) October 11, 2010 7:40 pm

    Hiya.

    Hauoli Lahanau, Michigan Warrior!

Hope Moniz can shake and bake him.

And what will it be against Neveda?

Did Moss throw a pass to Farve?

  293. Ipu Man October 11, 2010 7:48 pm

I’m sure Moch is fast, but 4.08 seconds? You think he’s faster than Deion Sanders, or Bo Jackson. Here are some unofficial 40 times by NFL players:

    1. Ted Ginn Jr. (4.06)

    2. Alexander Wright (4.09)

    3. Michael Bennett (4.13)

    4. Bo Jackson (4.14)

    5. DeAngelo Hall (4.15)

    6. Darrell Green (4.15)

    7. Lavernaues Coles (4.16)

    8. Deion Sanders (4.17)

    9. Joey Galloway (4.18)

    10. Ahman Green (4.19)

    11. Laveranues Coles (4.2)

    12. Don Beebe (4.21)

    13. Donte Stallworth (4.22)

    14. Ryan Dotson (4.24)

    15. Michael Vick (4.25)

    16. Randy Moss (4.25)

    17. Willie Parker (4.23)

    18. Chris Johnson (4.24)

    19. Devin Hester (4.24)

    20. Champ Bailey (4.28)

  315. al October 11, 2010 8:16 pm

it was in charles city, iowa. the summer of 1996 as it was, on a ballfield standing in line at a baseball tournament concession stand that i first fell in love. it was love at first bite.

the town’s folk prided themselves of their german heritage and culinary mastery. it was of course a homemade bratwurst that was served with saur kraut, grilled onions, mustard, mayo, on a hot steaming bun.

at first bite, my incisors cut through the world’s juiciest brats. the sausage’s thin skinned membrane that held the most juiciest brats in the world together popped as i bit into it. the natural juieces and perfectly seasoned sausage burst in to my mouth. i could hear my pallette scream in delictable delight.

i couldn’t finish my walk back to the dugout. i had to turn around and get one more brat before the game started.

deja vu, all over. this became a daily routine each day of the 8 day tournament. okay, i confess there were some three-a-days.

one day…i shall return to the city of charles in iowa.

  316. al October 11, 2010 8:18 pm

    ipuman…

    chicken hekka = sukiyaki

same stuff really. it was in the plantation days that the farmers from japan made and ate hekka almost daily.

i was gonna bring em and drop them in my bowl. heh, heh.

    btw, loved the scripture.

  317. al October 11, 2010 8:22 pm

Being hopeful is *guud*, but already saying you know what the outcome will be is considered *bachi* 👿 .

PLEEZ no bachi, just being hopeful, supportive, and thankful for everything accomplished thus far is enuff. 😉

Mack says that for the first time while he’s been UH’s head coach the team is back to playing UH’s style of football.

“I’m really proud of our players. They’re starting to understand and for the first time in three years, they’re starting to play our style again,” the third-year coach said Monday.

  334. Garret October 11, 2010 9:06 pm

Pat Hill made a nice gesture after the game.

After the game, Bulldogs coach Pat Hill visited the Warriors’ locker room.

“(Hill) said, ‘Make sure you play like that against everybody else because you really played a great ball game,'” McMackin said.

  335. madeinhawaii October 11, 2010 9:09 pm

Ah…Romans 10:9… I was kind of fond of the next scripture, myself..

“Greet one another with a holy kiss.”

  336. UHfan808 October 11, 2010 9:11 pm

    yeah sorry, mebbe try say:

    Warriors, let’s spank the wolfpack

by da end of da game, we like dem feel like they’re one “zippac”

we like dem feel like rushing back to their hotel rooms to pack

we like dem feel like they shoulda packed before they even left for da game

and we like dem feel they should run outta hea with their tails btwn their legs

try say that in one breath phew

  358. al October 11, 2010 9:42 pm

or like moch in mach speed?

  359. al October 11, 2010 9:43 pm

    moch as in mock?

then he would be one pake.

  360. Pride. October 11, 2010 9:43 pm

Moch has good numbers and stats. I believe that he was the WAC defensive POY for the 2009 season. When you watch him play though he doesn’t seem to have type of acceleration and leverage that you are looking for in an elite defensive end. Hopefully I am wrong. I would love to see a guy like him go in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Of course Laupepa Letuli will have his hands full. Pepa is an NFL prospect also, so this will be a good opportunity to get good film of him blocking one of the better defensive ends in the country.

Rolo could definitely help out Pepa a little bit by running the ball right at Moch to slow him down a little. Usually, guys who can run plays down from behind all night are not as good when you run plays right at them. A good way to slow them down is to hit him at different angles with different people. Trap him, zone him, reach him, lead him, load him, and tire him out.

  361. al October 11, 2010 9:45 pm

    wow…uhfan808.

you getting real lippy these days yah?

    that’s good.

something good must be going on in your life, eh?

  362. UHfan808 October 11, 2010 9:45 pm

    hehehe

moke like dat bruddah one moke?

You want to beat people when they are at their best. Then no one can say anything afterwards. They just gotta shut up and take their medicine.

its gonna be a shame that we can’t go over there anymore and pee on their bones. 😆

plus, what will powderpuff do with herself now? she’ll be losing a forum to show off her winning style. 😉

I hope someone brings a conch shell to them game to blow!! That got me more pumped up when it was played over the PA system during the Washington game of the undefeated season. It felt like a rallying cry.

  445. sportsforfun October 12, 2010 1:19 am

To blow the conch shell at the game would be another way of implementing the culture into the game.

  446. Pride. October 12, 2010 2:34 am

Do you think it benefits your athletes when you label them as the best in the nation? Not saying that it does or it doesn’t, I’m just asking for the opinion of Tsai-kos.

Coach Mack called Moniz the best QB in the nation. Is that good or bad?

  447. Michigan Warrior October 12, 2010 2:41 am

Mahalo for the birthday wishes, UHFan808, LizKauai, and BigHiloFan2!!!

Kinda cool to get our names up in the lights once a year, y’know?

  448. Michigan Warrior October 12, 2010 2:48 am

Pride… numbers don’t lie! There are several other teams who pass first and pass often… a couple of which also run up scores, and yet Moniz is still tops. A great receiving corps and O-Line helps tremendously too. When our offense succeeds, scouts need to take a look at our supporting cast as well.

Figure also that at least 3 of his 4 int’s were more like deflections off of our own receivers. Pretty good TD:INT ratio, even though completion rate is a little low.

  449. Pride. October 12, 2010 2:49 am

    Mack’s approach:

“Bryant Moniz is the best in the country.”

Local style approach to stating that you think that your Quaterback is the best in the nation.

“Of course we are happy with Bryant Moniz’ development so far as a quarterback. We believe that he has made steady improvement since he’s been here in the program. Right now he is playing probably as well as any other quarterback we’ve had our program. Of course he is only a junior now, and we always believe that there is room for improvement. He knows that and knows the things that he needs to work on to get better. We believe that he will continue to work hard and will progress and be even better next season than he is right now.”

“Bryant understands the nature of this game especially as it is played on this level. Every one that you play works hard and every team has talent. We need to prepare diligently every week, and take care of the details. We can never take anything for granted, espcially with the success that we have had offensively in recent games. The better you perform as we have lately, the bigger the target gets on your back. Winning football games will get more and more difficult as we move along through the season. We will need to remember that as we enter the meat of our schedule.”

  450. Michigan Warrior October 12, 2010 2:52 am

#428… sportsforfun… No one really knows what Hawaii will do with a new coach and a new team. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people. Can’t wait for the season to start!!! But, let’s take care of the football first!

  453. Pride. October 12, 2010 3:06 am

    NEVADA

Games to watch: Oct. 16 at Hawaii, Nov. 26 vs. Boise

Buzz: The Wolf Pack have the same “advantage” as Boise State — they’re in the WAC and the WAC isn’t that good. That said, there is a dangerous game this weekend for Nevada because it has to travel to Hawaii. If the game were in Reno, no worries. But because it’s in Honolulu, coach Chris Ault has to worry — a lot. The teams have met five times in Honolulu in conference play, and Hawaii has won all five, by a total of 79 points. If Nevada does win, it sets up potentially the biggest game in WAC history when Boise visits on Nov. 26.

    Verdict: One loss

    http://bit.ly/bGvCNX

    Very interesting.

Actually, it was puzzling (for me) at the end of the Fresno game that the Most Valuable award went to Jeramy Bryant rather than Greg Salas. I thought Greg Salas almost single-handedly kept us in the game for a couple of quarters and was deserving of some kind of recognition. His plays looked like they came from a highlight reel.

Who was it that said to watch the movie “Hachi”?? The movie itself could have been a lot better, but toward the end was amazing. I thought “Marley and Me” was better. I couldn’t sleep last night though, thinking of Hachi. Went to bed at 1 am watching “Iron Man II” after “Hachi”, but got up at 5:20 am, thinking of “Hachi”.

  493. papajoe2 October 12, 2010 6:42 am

Congrats also to former Leilehua qb Andrew Manley on NM State’s first win. Good luck in the future.

  494. papajoe2 October 12, 2010 6:46 am

2 former Leilehua QBs are doing well with Moniz and Manley (just getting started). Current Leilehua qb had a big game against Mililani on Saturday, rallying the team from a 28-0 deficit to an overtime lost. Over 300 yards passing.

So far, nobody picking Nevada to win in Pomai’s picks. I hope we not over confident. Nevada is a good team. That’s why they’re ranked. Even being in the WAC and they still ranked.

  503. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2010 6:57 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Statistically, Moniz IS the best QB in the country.

  504. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2010 7:00 am

    Hey papajoe2 –

If the team stays focused, humble and hungry, they can play with anybody. If they do those things they’ll beat Nevada.

  505. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 12, 2010 7:04 am

Probably close to a last post on this day, but I’ll check out the turf issue as soon as possible. The actual cost of the Ching Field turf replacement was under $900,000.

We have a new member in the family: Boots, short for Bootes (pronounced Bo-oh-tez) The Herdsman, the constellation which is home to Arcturus, the brightest star in the sky. He’s large handsome grey-striped and white cat around 4 years old.

Am out the door now and won’t be back until 3 pm, but I will try to make some phone calls to find out wassup.

I am a current online graduate learner and I have not had a problem getting a nice job with nice pay. As long as your degree is accredited, then your employer should accept it. Of course some online colleges do have bad reputations, try to stay clear of those colleges. If the college has a regular brick and mortar campus, then an online program from that school is going to be accepted more than a degree from just a fully online college.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
