Monday ramblings

• Strength of schedule apparently factors in determining WAC awards. No UH player was named WAC player of the week following a 66-7 rout of Charleston Southern.

• One of the rewards of a victory was “Omelet Monday.” But that tradition is a victim of the austere times. We’re told the value of the made-to-order omelets increased the per-person cost of a training-table meal. Yes, the omelet reward system has been scrambled.

• Rodney Bradley and Joe Avery both insist they will be able to play in Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech. If neither can go, then Billy Ray Stutzmann gets the first shot at left wideout. Slotback Dustin Blount also will practice there.

• Running back Hogan Rosehill is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a no-contact knee injury. Losing Rosehill ends plans for the Warriors to move running back Jordan Monico to linebacker. Monico has impressed coaches with his 10 tackles on kickoffs.

    Aloha Warriors.

  2. Garret September 27, 2010 7:00 am

That is interesting about no Warrior being named for a WAC award.

  3. Garret September 27, 2010 7:02 am

This week UH plays a WAC game (against a team on a 3-game losing streak) and wins are far more important to UH than any individual player getting a WAC weekly award.

  5. Da Punchbowl Kid September 27, 2010 7:05 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Too many Warriors coulda made POTW so they had to leave Hawaii out?

Let’s do the same against La Tech and watch the awards come in.

  6. Da Punchbowl Kid September 27, 2010 7:06 am

    Good morning Garret and Bear.

  7. Garret September 27, 2010 7:06 am

Big news early this week with all the schools presenting to the WAC for expansion. It sounds like the WAC will take at least UT-SA and Texas State, but a lot of reports say the WAC will add Montana also.

  8. Souljah September 27, 2010 7:08 am

Anyone notice that Manti teo and Corey Paredes are the top two tacklers in the country?

    What a performance on saturday!

    Have a great Monday folks.

    Cheepono out.

  12. Shoko September 27, 2010 7:25 am

    Garret,

Although I agree wins are a must, I always like when they give achievements to the players. As they are the ones that sacrifice their blood, sweat and tears. I truely believe, Paredes, will eventually get Defensive POW, as well as other Warriors. Season is still early.

  13. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 7:28 am

It’s all uphill from now on.

no WAC awards when playing aa teams, but still feel that the timing of this past game paid off for UH in many ways. Same goes around for Charleston Southern to help up their personal game.

I’m still shaking my head over taking a knee on that 4th down with 5:30 left.

The other coach & team are there to play a game. Your not helping them or yourselves with that much time left to take a bow.

Hope to hear the coach say that will be the last time for that decision.

  14. Slugger September 27, 2010 7:35 am

    Good morning, gang!

The team played a much better game than that in CO. They’re doing better, so the awards will come.

Na Koa luncheon this morning lists Coach Ron Lee as the Assigned Coach, but I don’t think he’s showing up. I wonder who will be there?

    Na Koa Mike?

  15. Shoko September 27, 2010 7:41 am

Still wondering what all the hoopla was about between the coaches during halftime. The only problem I see with what was reportedly to have transpired is the the effect it can have on the players. Team cohesion is pivitol, which includes not only the players, but the coaches as well. Whatever it was, please get it together.

  16. NYUH September 27, 2010 7:47 am

Doesn’t mean that much unless we know who did win the WAC awards. Obviously the big wins were Boise State over Oregon State and Nevada over BYU. Loved the win over CSU but got to give credit where it is due.

  17. Steve September 27, 2010 7:55 am

Good Morning, Tsaiko’s and Tsaikette’s. TOP TWENTY!!! Cannot wait for Saturday, start of WACKY SEASON!!!

    Kekoa,

Are you going to the Na Koa luncheon today? sj-macro, myki?

  24. Garret September 27, 2010 8:25 am

    Shoko,

*Individual* awards tend to come when a team wins. Earning the wins will insure that many UH players will get WAC awards–both the weekly ones and the end-of-year ones. If wins, everything else takes care of itself. If UH loses, individual awards do not matter.

  25. al September 27, 2010 8:25 am

Souljah…and to think that manti played the whole game whereas, corey went out in the third quarter. manti leads corey by one tackle after having a “balls to the walls” game against stanford with 21 tackles.

  26. al September 27, 2010 8:26 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Gigi – Jason had family stuff to do, so he was not at the pre-game t-gate. He did show up for the post-game t-gate, though.

Safe travels to the Wahine as they embark on the worst road trip in the NCAA – Ruston on Wednesday, Las Cruces on Friday. Next home vb match not for 2 weeks. 🙁

  28. al September 27, 2010 8:28 am

i know that some early talks involved bringing over montana state along montana, just to be politically correct. now if the former did not apply then things should be fine with just montana only.

  29. Garret September 27, 2010 8:30 am

Doesn’t mean that much unless we know who did win the WAC awards. Obviously the big wins were Boise State over Oregon State and Nevada over BYU. Loved the win over CSU but got to give credit where it is due.

The WAC’s weekly awards went to:

Offense: BSU QB Kellen Moore, who was 19-of-27 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-24 win over No. 24 Oregon State. His passing efficiency rating for the game was a crazy 196.6.

Defense: Nevada LB James-Michael Johnson. He had 10 tackles, 7 solo, in Nevada’s 27-13 win at BYU.

Special Teams: La tech LB Rufus Porter. He blocked a punt in the 4th quarter that forced a safety, cutting their deficit to 1 point in the game (13-12). It was La Tech’s first safety in *10* years.

I may be a homer for UH but I DO NOT have a problem with any of the WAC’s choices.

  30. al September 27, 2010 8:30 am

jm….that was some mean bread pudding you fixed up. mahalo.

i gotta say that the bread pudding, konbu maki, and ike’s ny chocolate cheesecake made the opu very happy.

  31. Garret September 27, 2010 8:31 am

    Al,

The latest published rumors seem to indicate that Montana can join the WAC without Montana State. That does change things in the equation of adding Montana.

  32. Garret September 27, 2010 8:32 am

    Nice note about Bess.

Dolphins’ third down beast, Davone Bess, lived up to his reputation has three of his six catches were on third down conversions.

  33. papajoe2 September 27, 2010 8:35 am

Maybe coach Mac and Miano was mad at halftime because CS was obviously a weaker team, and not as talented as UH, so maybe the players was not playing their assignments and just freelancing. Could be why CS drove down the field and scored. In previous games, the coaches hinted that the players were not following what needed to be done. This is between the coaches and players. Joe Fan, like us, don’t know the inside of what assignment each player needs to do, so we cannot really tell of the mental mistakes that the players are making. All we see are the obvious, like missed tackles, no penetration, etc. A while ago, a high school QB in Hawaii, threw some passes that were way off the mark. The crowd was yelling negative things about the QB, who usually hit his receivers. I asked the QB what was going on. He said that the receivers were screwing up, like cutting in instead of out or straight out and long like they are supposed to do, but was cutting short, thus making like the QB was throwing to nobody. This still goes on in the NFL, but not as much as high school or college. Still, the coaches are responsible, so maybe that’s why they were pi…. off. Coach Tony Sellitto said it best, ” The bench can cure cancer.”

  34. d1島 September 27, 2010 8:42 am

Perhaps another Unit Citation from the Conference for the QB’s? No one else in the conference went 6-deep in their game!

  35. d1島 September 27, 2010 8:43 am

    Slugger,

morning tsaiko’s and tsaikette’s, wishing everyone a good day and a better week to go along with good health.

congrats to the warrior fball team on the win. my only comment to all the insights peeps giving is UH was the superior team and it was not match from the start. Imho had no problem with the starter beginning the third quarter before giving way to the back-ups. Needed to see if they can come out with the enthusiasm and fire like first half. 3rd quarter was a problem in past games and needed to work on this.

  38. gigi-hawaii September 27, 2010 8:48 am

    JM2375,

boy, you guys are die-hard Tsai-kos, showing up at the Tgate after the game.

Iwent to bed before the game ended. Of course, I woke up at 4 am that morning…

  39. LizKauai m/ September 27, 2010 8:51 am

papajoe2 – thanks for #33. Makes sense. When I finally had a chance to watch the game last night, it looked like CS was having its way with the dee and marching very successfully down the field. Something that should not have happened with a defense that was where it needs to be.

    Have a great Monday everyone!

    A Hui (hi) Hou!

  40. jm2375 September 27, 2010 8:52 am

    Offense did amazing things.

Defense had several guys who shoulda, coulda won that award.

    Special Teams… one word… Monico.

Manti Te’o had a monster game with 21 tackles. Corey Paredes has been consistent throughout every game so far, and he was pulled early, or could’ve gotten way more!

  44. Ipu Man September 27, 2010 9:16 am

La Tech lost to Navy so guess we will see more running

  45. kev-1 September 27, 2010 9:16 am

anyone catch the Boise St. game? Noticed that they no longer re-paint the WAC logo on the field. The numbers and everything else are all newly painted, but the WAC logo is just a faded piece of the disgusting blue turf. This team has really made me dislike them.

    – Boise rep ignoring Donovan for a request to set up future games with a “yeah right” response

    – Not painting the WAC logo on the field . . . hello, you are still in the WAC this year!

    – Dirty defensive plays against OR St. – helmet to helmet spear hit against James Rogers that left him unconcious (no flag)

    – suplexing J. Rogers on the next play well after the play was whistled dead (no flag)

    – standing over a tackled RB for an extended period of time taunting him in his face (finally a flag)

These plays were only from one series. They happen all the time. Yet if you ask anyone which WAC team has the dirtiest, rowdyest, undisciplined players they will probably tell you Hawaii . . .COME ON!!!!

I truly hope Hawaii is playing their A-game when we go to Boise and beat them.

    UNNECESSARY ARROGANCE!!!!

    Hi GIGI!

Had to be the driver for Lois – she still has not been cleared to drive. In fact I had to drive her to a MD appointment on Sat. afternoon – he opened the office only for her – she was having post-op problems with one eye after the cataract surgery. So no tailgate. Of course not having tickets may have played a factor in that too!

2011 baseball schedule out. Looks like no OOC midweek road games, unlike last season.

HONOLULU – University of Hawai‘i head baseball coach Mike Trapasso released the 2011 UH baseball schedule, featuring four non-conference home series against national powers.

Hawai‘i opens the season with 2010 NCAA Regional participant Oregon for a four-game series from February 18-20. They will then host perennial national title contender Texas for a four-game series from February 25-28 before taking a five-game road trip to southern California, facing Loyola Marymount (four games) and Long Beach State (one game).

Also on the non-conference slate for UH are home series against national powers Cal State Fullerton and Wichita State, along with them also hosting Portland, Centenary and Valparaiso.

In WAC play, UH will host Sacramento State, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State, while playing at Fresno State, Nevada and New Mexico State.

For the second-straight year, the WAC Tournament will be held in Mesa, Ariz., where UH won the WAC Tournament title last season.

  54. Garret September 27, 2010 10:04 am

Boise rep ignoring Donovan for a request to set up future games with a “yeah right” response

Why should BSU ever schedule UH again? UH won’t pay them anything to come to Aloha Stadium, so they would lose money on travel expenses and travel time. Instead, they are filling their schedule with games against AQ teams for big money ($1.25 million for Virginia Tech, $900k for Mississippi) and they are scheduling home-and-home series with schools like BYU.

Why should they travel to Aloha Stadium for free when they can play home-and-home games with BYU and when they get $1 million from other schools to play them? Face it, we won’t see BSU at Aloha Stadium ever again unless UH gets into the same conference as BSU someday.

    Howzit Everybody,

    Garret #54,

And on that note I don’t think anybody would care if we ever saw Boise again either. I myself would rather us concentrate on scheduling PAC ? teams and maybe the token Big 10 or even Big East teams. As for Boise, I agree that we may never see them again and I for one don’t really care.

  60. kev-1 September 27, 2010 10:12 am

Garret – I’m not saying that I think Boise should play us. I just feel it is arrogance the way it reportedly went down. I could care less if we ever play them again or not. I think they are a good team that should let their play on the field be the determining factor that gains them respect, instead of walking around like you are better than everyone else. That was my point . . . arrogance, not pity.

  61. whitey September 27, 2010 10:13 am

    Good morning Tsaikos

  63. kev-1 September 27, 2010 10:14 am

Further, Boise is talented enough on the field without the dirty hits and cold shoulders. They play in rhythm and usually pretty mistake free and definitely belong in the top 5 of the country. That said, I still don’t like em.

  64. bb September 27, 2010 10:16 am

Time to start sporting the BUCK FOISE shirt again.

  65. whitey September 27, 2010 10:17 am

My hat off to the Warriors for doing a good job and playing good football. Somehow the D played very, very differently from previous games and I personally think that someone else had a hand in changing how they played.

  66. whitey September 27, 2010 10:23 am

As far as taking a knee towards the end of the game, that is a very, very good gesture by Coach Mc. You got the other team whipped big time, so you want the Warriors to keep scoring??? I don’t think so, and this will add a lot of aloha for the Warriors. Do you still want to be known as a team that plays dirty fb. I don’t think so. Good team know when it is time to call off the dogs and am very glad that the Warriors played the game with intensity and good sportsmanship.

  71. whitey September 27, 2010 10:31 am

a lot is written about POW awards with none of the Warriors qualifying. the award or awards gives individual players recognition which they deserve, but i will take winning as a team over any award. with a win, the entire team is recognized and that is what the game is about. Go Warriors!!!!!!

  72. Derek September 27, 2010 10:33 am

    Monday Forecast:

    1) Sunny

    2) Early line – UH -8 1/2 over La. Tech; Alabama -9 over Florida. Both seems to be a little high at this point.

    3) What UH players are nominated for this past week’s award?

    4) Let’s not get carried away after last Saturday. CS was an FCS team and physically they got trampled.

    5) La Tech losing to Navy, Texas A&M, and S. Miss isn’t too bad. They are all very decent teams. I think Texas A&M is going to be very good and will make it to a bowl game.

    6) We cannot overlook La Tech. They always play us tough an have a big OL and DL. I’m glad we are playing them at home this week.

    7) 4 sacks last Saturday earning $2,000 to UH Athletics by McDonalds of Hawaii.

    8) Nothing has changed, the key is pressuring the QB and stopping the run. More CB or Safety Blitzes on the edge or up the middle will cause QB to throw early. CBs playing tight man to man.

    9) Practicing stripping the ball.

    10) The good. UH leads the nation in passing offense at 405.5 yards per game. The bad. UH dead last in punt returns yards. Come On, Man. Let’s get better.

Finally, the 3 best sounding words for the defense. “3 and Out”. UH has shown that we can score 21 -28 points in a quarter. The key is the defense getting stops without giving up not more than 1 or 2 first downs to get the ball over to our offense. Our offense, when clicking can score points in a hurry. We have shown that potential at times.

There are a limited number of games that ESPN can decide to pick up as the season goes along. It looks like Nevada’s hot start has gotten the SJSU at Nevada picked up for ESPNU. They have to move the kickoff from 1pm to 7:30pm for ESPNU.

I hpoe that ESPN doesn’t give up all of its leftover time slots before the Warriors get on a roll. UH could use another ESPN game later this season…maybe the UNLV game.

  83. (Jesse) James September 27, 2010 11:02 am

#66… whitey… I agree! No sense pouring it on with 5 minutes left, and no way the other team can make a freak comeback. Plus, the other team showed class all the way through and never gave up, despite the score and being manhandled through the whole game. We showed class and aloha with Army and CSU… and if we ever go independent in the future, you want people to know we can play, but also show class and good sportsmanship.

On the other hand, our last couple of scores weren’t attempts to run up the score. It was more of lower-tiered players getting a chance, and showing what they’ve got. It would’ve looked more stupid if, once they broke free, to pull up and just fall down after gaining a first down, or running out of bounds with no one around, when we’re trying to run time off of the clock. Rosehill might’ve scored too, if he didn’t mess up his knee on that run. He had a full head of steam with no one around him when he pulled up and went down.

  89. Michigan Warrior September 27, 2010 11:24 am

What we really needed was to beat MWC teams anytime we were matched up with them this season.

  90. Michigan Warrior September 27, 2010 11:30 am

We didn’t take a knee in the first half. We took a knee on 4th down with about 5 minutes left in the game, instead of kicking another field goal. We had to call a timeout to get the field goal team off of the field, to put the offense back on, to do it. Coach Mack explained it during the post game interview. He also explained that Coach Rolo told him, if Moniz gets six passing TD’s in a half (to tie him and Colt), he’d pull Moniz out so he wouldn’t break the record. And he did.

  91. (Jesse) James September 27, 2010 11:31 am

  92. (Jesse) James September 27, 2010 11:41 am

Good job on the Warriors part this weekend. Good win. There are still areas that need to be cleaned up but the effort was definitely there and the players seemed a little more focused and intense. Need to build that up.

We know the offense can score and can score quickly when needed. We’ve seen that through the first four games (although we tend to get bogged down in the red zone). I still don’t fully understand what the coaches are trying to accomplish with running the dive on the goal line. Even against CSU the O-line couldn’t get the push needed to move the ball one yard into the endzone. When the dive was faked and Moniz et al ran to the outside, it was an easy TD. We should try more of that, or option stuff, or seeing if Alex or Chizzy can get over the top of the pile.

The Defense needs to remain focused and intense. More QB pressure on teams will force them to change their game plan. Fill the gaps. DBs and Safeties seem to need to play a little tighter on the coverage. At times during the CSU game coverage seemed soft and their receivers got into open areas or behind the safeties.

Clean up the small stuff, be more aware on special teams, never letting up on the throttle on offense until late into the game, and bringing more swagger and intensity to the defense will make this team a 9 win team.

  93. madeinhawaii September 27, 2010 11:43 am

I don’t think Moniz would want to break the record against a lower division team. It would haunt him forever…

  94. (Jesse) James September 27, 2010 11:44 am

Oh, and by swagger I don’t mean showboating, dancing, celebrating, pointing fingers and making gestures after a good tackle, sack, tackle for loss, or nice hit. Just get up and go back to the huddle. Let them know you are there but be somewhat humble about it. Too many times I see defensive players get hyped up, do a dance, make all kinds of gestures because of one play and then get burned on the next (and this happens on many college games throughout the week). No need to showboat or jaw. Just do the job and let that speak for itself.

  95. papajoe2 September 27, 2010 11:46 am

Sure would have liked for UH to try a play with 4th and 10 and 5:30 on the clock. I think Graves was the QB. We didn’t have to throw the ball in the end zone, but could have tried a running play up the middle. If we score, we score. A running play up the middle would give us practice on a running play. Even a QB sneak would have been good for us. I’m sure the other coach would take the kneeing if we gave it to them, but maybe he would have wanted his team to “toughen up” to prevent a first down. CS coach knew what he was getting into when they accepted the invite. Sometimes, this being football, the other team would get insulted. They way coach Mac was yelling before the play, maybe we were unorganized, so he just told the QB to take a knee rather than burning a timeout, or getting a penalty and get criticized by the fans for being unorganized. Burning a timeout before the play and scoring on the next play would be even colder. If you can’t get it right then take a knee.

  96. Kazz September 27, 2010 11:46 am

Interesting comments from CSU’s coach about how he thought THIS 2010 team was better in all three phases of the game than the 2007 team.

Good offensive firewords, I thought the defense was helped by the difference in talent on both sides of the ball as I would have liked to see MORE pressure in the CSU backfield.

I also would have like to see more running in the 4th quarter.

Hard to really judge what we’ve learned from the road trip when playing an FCS team. We need to come out angry and ready to play against LaTech.

I’m drooling over the upcoming Nevada game at home in two weeks….

  97. Not an Expert September 27, 2010 11:50 am

Thoughts for play calling inside the 5. Design more rollout type of plays for the quarterback and give him more options. Will be needed in the future against the better teams. If my recollection is correct don’t see to many designed rollout plays for the quarterback compared to when JJ was here when inside the 5.

A swarming defense is a key for Hawaii football because we are usually a smaller team than most other Division 1 teams. Need everyone to swarm to the ball. Anyone watching cause they think they are out of the play is out of the play. Continuing to pursue can create opportunities and if 1 or 2 is taken advantage of during the game that could be a difference between winning and losing.

Commenting is much easier than playing the game, hopefully some food for thought.

    for the 49ers fans ….

Offense in disarray, 49ers fire offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye

    By Associated Press

    POSTED: 11:01 a.m. HST, Sep 27, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Their offense in a funk, the winless San Francisco 49ers fired coordinator Jimmy Raye on Monday.

Raye was dismissed one day after San Francisco lost 31-10 at Kansas City to fall to 0-3. The 49ers have scored 38 points, second fewest in the NFL behind Carolina.

Mike Johnson will move from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Offensive assistant Jason Michael will take over as quarterbacks coach.

Coach Mike Singletary said he made the decision after spending the night looking at game film.

“One thing I want you to understand is if I make a decision, it’s my decision,” he said. “The thing that I have control over is the 53-man staff, the 53-man roster and the staff, who is on my coaching staff. That is my decision.”

  100. whitey September 27, 2010 11:57 am

(J)J, have similar thoughts about showboating, but IF I WAS THE COACH, that player would be out of the game and heading to the locker room. Have no use for that kind of sportsmanship.

What’s up with Hansen punching the CS player twice in the head? He should have ejected and suspended. His leg may have been bent over in the pileup while the opponent was trying to get the ball. That’s still no reason to punch the opponent. If that was a good reason, then maybe the NCAA should change the rules and allow punching.

  104. Bulla September 27, 2010 12:14 pm

Mosque at Ground Zero NYC….I am perplexed that so many of my friends are against a mosque being builtnear Ground Zero. I think it should be the goal of every American to betolerant.

The mosque should be allowed, in an effort to promote tolerance. That is why I also propose that two gay nightclubs be opened next door tothe mosque, thereby promoting tolerance within the Islamic community. We could call the clubs “The Turban Cowboy” and “You Mecca Me So Hot”.

Next door should be a butcher shop that specializes in pork and have an openbarbeque with spare ribs as its daily special. Across the street a very daring lingerie store called “Victoria Keeps Nothing Secret” with sexy mannequins in the window modelling the merchandise.

Next door to the lingerie shop, there would be room for an Adult Toy Shop(Koranal Knowledge?), its name in flashing neon lights, and on the other side a liquor store, maybe call it “Morehammered”?

papajoe2 I agree with you football is a contact sport but I was mad seeing Hansen throwing punches to one of the other players that made me feel so shame. That was unnecessary an totally inappropriate we all know trash talk and taunting will always be apart of football. But going to blows is on a different level an honestly I wanted to see Hansen either get taken out of the game an lectured or Ejected an Lectured that type of action is uncalled for.

  118. d1島 September 27, 2010 12:49 pm

    DPK,

along those lines, when asked what his favorite choice of uniform is, an all-conference DL from Linfield said he loved messin’ up an OLineman knowing that he was thinking, “Crap! A guy dressed in solid purple did that to me” 😆

  119. Bulla September 27, 2010 12:59 pm

    Marazulu,

2 years ago there was a similar situation with the O line being undisciplined, and in the end of the season, they were getting flagged for personal fouls….after the play…huh, really? don’t compromise the integrity of the game with cheap shots, hits to the back, and flagrant punches……the game is bigger than that…..just my 2 sense.

  120. Bulla September 27, 2010 1:01 pm

    d1

easy tigah, about those purple jokes……haha, j/k, know what you mean. a certain DL from Weber would just stand up at the line of scrimmage and laugh….and the O linemen knew he was laughing AT them….and that was classic in itself…..haha

  121. Markazulu September 27, 2010 1:09 pm

Bulla Well as I am entitled to my opinion you are entitled to yours so no biggie EXPRESS YOURSELF I’m all for freedom of speech I respect your opinion. I just find it the fact he hit the guy twice an it was caught on camera that he didn’t get in trouble at least even lectured at thats just not cool in my eyes. That gives people the wrong impression of Hawaii football… It’s sad to think that they might look at Warrior football as nothing but degenerates with pads on.

  123. Kazz September 27, 2010 1:34 pm

Either I am being too optimistic, but since UH started placing the student fee free ticket initiative a few games ago, I was able to notice a slight increase.

At the volleyball match against Nevada, there was spillage in section M above the normal student section in the lower bowl and for a game against an FCS opponent, there was a decent turnout of students considering the situation.

I hope to see a BIG spike when men’s basketball starts.

  124. OldDiver September 27, 2010 1:35 pm

Are we sure there was no punishment for the punches? Maybe someone was doing extra reps today?

  125. Kekoa (iPhone) September 27, 2010 1:36 pm

Lighten up guys. Chit happens in da pits. You learn from good coaching not to react to the personal attacks. Just get up and walk away.

Did you happen to notice the positives? Like our guys helping their guy up after a play? Why not? Is it easier to look for the negatives? Uh huh….

  126. Markazulu September 27, 2010 1:36 pm

Kazz yeah I heard that 1000 students went to the football game an about 300 students went to the volleyball game so I think it’s looking pretty good… If our teams do better who knows those numbers could rise drastically..

  127. OldDiver September 27, 2010 1:39 pm

I hope Bradley only comes back when he’s ready. Saturday showed we are loaded at WR. No sense making the hammy worse and jeopardizing the rest of the season.

  128. Derek September 27, 2010 1:44 pm

I didn’t like taking a knee on 4th down and long. I think it gives the wrong message. For Charleston Southern maybe they thought UH was disrespectful in the sense that they thought CS was not a good football team. For UH, it was also disrespectful saying we’ll give you the ball back because we have mercy on you! Come, On. Mercy! I don’t think CS is asking for mercy. This is a college football. It is not P.E. football, it is not intramurals.

It also gives the wrong message to the players. The players want to play and perform to the best of their abilities. If anything, use the backups and run the play. Run a running play. Throw a short pass using the backup receivers, etc. Also, they took 2 timeouts to decide on what to do. It’s crazy. I know Coach Mac is a nice guy, but God sakes. He himself said this isn’t P.E. football. Leo Durocher said “nice guys finish last.” For the most part, that’s true. As a fan watching the game, I was shocked at the play.

  129. WhiteBear September 27, 2010 1:45 pm

Kazz #123…I agree. I’ve been sitting in the student section for the last two home games and more students attended this game than the USC game, that is certain. It was more rowdy and crowded than the USC game. Hopefully, this trend continues and students fill the entire section by the Nevada game….

Thought they should have run a play instead of taking a knee.

BUT, got to consider this was the first time Mack has been up by 50+. He was probably unsure of the coaching etiquette for that situation. Earlier Rosehill got hurt running the ball.

Plus the other coach is so damn nice. Who knows what thoughts were running through his mind to come up with that decision.

  135. Markazulu September 27, 2010 2:14 pm

cocobean well they interviewed him after the game an he said that he was gonna kick a field goal but felt that would look like he’s trying to rack up the score, so he was gonna run a running play but figured what happens if the guy breaks loose an scores it’ll still look like his intentionally running up the score. In my opinion hey you gotta play 4 quarters even if its your 3 or 4th string guys in there how do you expect them to play hard if you make decisions like that. I can understand not wanting to run up the score but it just seems so weird to call a kneel when theres 5 minutes left.

  136. Slugger September 27, 2010 2:14 pm

Entertaining review by Coach Mouse Davis. He brought the Missus with him, too. Chris Williams put together the video clips of the defensive plays and then the offense. He did the ‘pointing’ while Mouse explained what was going on and made it much easier to follow the player on the field and the description of the action. Kekaula & Tsai showed up for lunch which included butterfish misoyaki, teri chicken & yummy tako, thinnly sliced so it was easy to chew.

Practice tomorrow at 8 am for an hour and then 7am (2hr) on Wednesday.

And I got my question answered about the special teams substitutions problem.

    Kekoa,

There was courtesy shown on both sides ~ I saw a CSU player helping a UH player up after hitting him in the end zone, as well as our guys doing the same on the field.

The ‘personal foul’ penalty that was called on Siaki Cravens after Jeremy Bryant made an interception was really for ‘excessive celebration’ because Siaki picked Jeremy up and was carrying him for a couple of feet. Dumb! As Mouse said, it’s an emotional game and you want them to show some emotion.

Is there some resistance from the HC to using one of those pads with the ten sets of footprints on the sideline to stage the special teams? It seems to be used by lots of other teams and may be helping them avoid substitution issues.

  149. Michigan Warrior September 27, 2010 3:01 pm

I think back to games in which we were getting blown out, with the final outcome decided long ago, and watch as the other team continues to cram it down our throat or continue to call passing plays, and they continue to score. That sick feeling of, “why are they still pouring it on when we’re obviously overmatched and getting killed?” And then I hear our own fans, now on the opposite side of this scenario. Yes, we can all voice our opinions, but remember how it felt when we were getting pounded by teams trying to make a statement at our expense? Then, imagine how our team must feel. If we’re getting upset by it, all we need is a couple of hot blooded personal fouls, and everything explodes. We don’t need that stuff. Won’t prove anything, aside from padding stats.

Our last TD was scored with backups… Graves to Blount on a screen, which he broke loose for a 40+ yard score. Then, we had Rosehill running and had broken free. If not for his knee buckling, he had a full head of steam and could’ve possibly taken it to the house too.

After we got the ball back, we had Nielsen as QB and Monico as RB… with the way Monico had been playing on special teams… one handoff would’ve probably gone for another score. I’m glad we didn’t score any more.

  150. Slugger September 27, 2010 3:09 pm

Too bad about Hogan Rosehill. Heal up, guy.

    d1, #141 ~

You know, when you go to practice, the coaches will sometimes call players up by groups, the 1’s, or the 2’s. Special teams are made up of a mix of players, right? Mouse was saying he feels for Tormey since he also coached special teams. You can get a player engrossed in watching the game from the sidelines and he doesn’t realize he’s supposed to be on the field. Now, I don’t know if that is the real problem; you’d have to go talk to Coach Tormey. But, I can see how it can happen. David Graves, normally a QB, was running down the field in the 4th quarter (forget if it was a kickoff or the lone punt.) Any suggestions on how to make it work? Hold up placards on the sidelines with group names like at the airport? 🙂 Assign players to specific special teams groups and make it static? What happens if someone is hurt and you have to substitute someone in? Will they remember? When the offense is on the field, some of the defensive players are sitting on the benches toward the back of the sidelines. If you have defensive players in the PAT special teams unit, might they be at the back of the sideline & not know they are up? I’m just asking questions. Those of you who’ve played football would know how things work.

  151. LizKauai (iPad) September 27, 2010 3:13 pm

Sorry to hear about Rosehill. The comment was that he might have avoided the injury had he planted his toe and not his whole foot… Arrrgh… Such a quick and final thing. Stuff happens.

People are commenting that the “action” was insulting and disrespectful to CSU. Now if we had made a field goal and ran up the score into the 70’s, what do you think the comments will be? “Insulting and disrespectful…” Face it…UH will never do anything right in the eyes of some people…They approach life with the glass half empty… I’m just happy with the win, whether it’s against an FCS or FBS.

markazulu. Felt they should have run a play also. Was at the game laughing at the situation. It just seemed like he wasn’t sure what to do. No right or wrong decision at that point but seemed there was a lot of thought (or confusion) in the coming up with a play.

  159. NCAA September 27, 2010 3:38 pm

Remember a few years back when an autistic basketball player who was a team manager and never saw one minute of playing time? When he was a senior and with the game already decided, the coach put him in and he responded by scoring 20 points (18 were from 3 pointers).

That is why you play the game. Let the players play. There were still 5 minutes left in the game. I can see taking a knee in the final seconds of a game but till then, play the game. In my opinion it’s a disservice to those who practice hard and not see any action during the game. Play the game.

  160. d1島 September 27, 2010 3:38 pm

    Hoohiki,

    Agreed.

Let’s table the discussion until Saturday when the team is faced with the same decision again! 😉

    RE: # 123

    Kazz-

That’s because this implicated student fee is another tax.

Not a good buzz word right now for any posistive results.

  163. Kazz September 27, 2010 3:41 pm

It’s all on the defense again against LaTech.

Stop their run and initiate a heavy pass rush. There are two things we have yet to see this season.

The offense will be able to hold their own provided they can get on the field.

  164. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 3:44 pm

also, I don’t see Nevada falling out of the top 25 .

They have something special clicking right now.

  165. Kazz September 27, 2010 3:45 pm

    CoolEthan,

Maybe I am mis-understanding your post, but there IS somewhat of a noticeable increase in student participation in the two games I have been able to attend since the student ticket thing kicked off.

If anything, if students feel “obligated” in the sense that they already paid for it and might as well go, then hopefully that will translate into legimate excitement about going to the games if they enjoy themselves.

  166. d1島 September 27, 2010 3:45 pm

    *Off topic*

    Got a PNW question…

Does the flagship Uwajimaya store in Seattle have a different selection of goods from the one in Beaverton?

Tryna decide if we should pick up stuff for #2 son before we leave Seattle or save a little kala by buying it in OR.

    Mahalo.

  167. Markazulu September 27, 2010 3:46 pm

Well Wheter its Blount, Bradley, or Avery I have faith in all of um. I’m just sad to see Bradley and Avery get hurt I hope they get well soon. Football is football but I dont want them to sacrifice there health…

  168. whitey September 27, 2010 3:51 pm

Please explain to me how a team on the losing end of a 66-7 game would win a game with less than 5 minutes. This is not the pros or trying to impress ESPN, this is a college game where most teams are taught how to be sportsman. If you don’t know when to call off the dogs, someday the dogs are going to bite you big time. Just think about the recent past when BYU used to kick our butts, but then they were at the receiving end of some ass kicking games.

  169. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 3:51 pm

    Kazz,

Sorry, my mistake reading your post.

But I’m still dissapointed in not seeing a filled student section at kickoff.

Plus, all what I said above about increased fee’s during troubled economic times.

All in all, it’s a moot point to start up why a stadium needs to be on Campus grounds ( which I support) ‘cuz it ain’t gonna happen

  170. wafan September 27, 2010 3:53 pm

    Hi!

  171. Kazz September 27, 2010 3:53 pm

    CoolEthan,

    We are not ranked.

Nevada will lose in two weeks and will fall out of the TOP 25.

  172. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 3:53 pm

It’s competition whitey. It a sport of accepting consequences.

    Just like lift.

If you can’t handle either of them, get out and find another job.

  173. wafan September 27, 2010 3:54 pm

    d1 . . .

Dunno. Have not been to Uwajima-ya (Seattle) in years! And been to the one in Beaverton just once waaaaaay back in the mid-80’s.

Maybe time to go back and do some shopping.

  174. Kazz September 27, 2010 3:56 pm

I have a feeling the student participation at home basketball games will see a significant increase.

If anyone has had the PLEASURE of attending those 11pm ESPN bball games they’ve been having over the past two years, it’s been free to the students.

Now, granted the current student tickets do NOT allow for general admission seating like those ESPN games, but still, it’s college ballm and it will be free.

It should be fun and the ball is in Coach Gib’s “court” to deliver on the goods to keep them coming!!!

  175. whitey September 27, 2010 3:56 pm

So now you have a whole hald left with a huge lead, but decide to start the 1st team because of various reasons. Could have played many of the others then and thru the 2nd half, so you think that the last 5 minutes of play was important to the bench. How come they neva play earlier where they could have run and pass????? The last 5 minutes is that important?????? Unreal!!!!!

  176. Kazz September 27, 2010 3:58 pm

The Charleston Southern game had the Blue Angels airshow to contend with. I believe upwards of 50K+ attended the event.

I wonder what the turnstile count would have been without this happening on the same day? Granted, it wasn’t at the same time, but I doubt a lot of people would have attended both.

At least with Aloha Stadium there is on-site parking and a place to have tailgates.

An on-campus stadium, particularly at UH-M, will have less parking and fewer sites for tailgates. UH-M already has a limited number of stalls. Unless they build a stadium with a humongous parking structure it will be a traffic nightmare not only for the fans, but for the students and folks who live in the surrounding communities as well.

Those Tsai-kos who traveled to the away games located at on-campus sites can probably attest to that.

  179. whitey September 27, 2010 4:01 pm

Competition???? In football, it is 2 teams playing the game according to the rules of the game. No where do I see a rule that says “if you cannot handle it, time to get out or find another job”. Show me the where I can find this rule in football!!!!!!!

  180. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:01 pm

Great optimisum Kazz, and sis boom bah. I like it.

But the Warriors need to shut up and put up from now on.

Enough gab from the coaches and players about “Believe” “Protect the Hale, it’s our house”, run & shoot is da bomb, etc.

I support motivation, but Nevada is the real deal. I go out of my way to watch Boise, and now Nevada, because they have credentials to produce consitent wins.

Hawaii lost to a mediocre USC and very bad Colorado team.

They slaughter CSU that travels the continent and beyond that has less than 1/2 the scholies of UH and is more of an academic school than athletics.

I’m not giving in unless they beat Nevada and Boise in the same season. Home or away.

  181. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:05 pm

Maybe a surf contest on the North shore will affect attendance.

    It is what it is.

The fans don’t want to pay the increase in tix prices during a recession. period.

Plus, please look into the attendance records every time hawaii has played a AA team.

You will fall into the snooze alert

  182. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:05 pm

    Whitey,

Last time I checked, football is a competition sport.

  183. whitey September 27, 2010 4:09 pm

Cool, you neva answer the question??? Where in the rule book does it say to get out or quit????? Personally, I no think you going find it in any sport rule book, but good luck.

  184. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:09 pm

    CoolEthan,

That AND I do not respect Nevada.

They fell okole-first into a good situation for themselves in the MWC and they can thank geography.

I don’t like their softball fans, I don’t like their basketball and football fans. Chris Ault reminds me of a very unpleasant individual I wasted 1 year working for and who can forget the legacy of Mark Fox.

Nevada has men’s basketball and that’s about it and even that isn’t what it used to be.

Their football program hasn’t made much of a wrinkle in the college football landscape and they will fall apart when KP graduates.

  185. Expat September 27, 2010 4:12 pm

D1– I don’t think so from what my Seattle friends have said.

Bulla, I think all that stuff is already in place around where they want to build the mosque– except that no one has actually proposed building a mosque at all. The proposal is for a cultural center but that doesn’t get folks as excited down in Mississippi, now does it?

It was Austin that took the knee. It was great listening to Leahey & Ching try to recall if they had ever seen anything like that before. I thought it was the right thing to do. Plus Enos had to be getting kind of tired, no? That bugga did plenty kicking.

  186. madeinhawaii September 27, 2010 4:15 pm

The fees don’t kick in till next semester… are the students already reaping the benefits without having paid for them?

  187. whitey September 27, 2010 4:15 pm

kazz, still early in the season, but thank you and sailor blue for taking care of the Tsaikos tg sites. Thanks also go the the “cooking brew, I mean crew” for their expertise. Thank you.

  188. Derek September 27, 2010 4:15 pm

Why do we make a big deal about the score getting out of hand. Ohio St. and Wisconsin scored over 70 points on Saturday over E. Michigan and Austin Peay respectively. A couple of weeks ago Oregon beat New Mexino 72-0. Do you think people are saying they are running up the score or making it big deal about it? I doubt it. For those big name teams, it is par for the course. If we run a normal play, I don’t think it is running up the score. We are playing back ups, maybe 3rd string players too. CS responsibility is to play defense and stop the play. To me, that’s showing respect as a football team. I don’t think they want pity from us.

Do you really think Boise St., Fresno, or Nevada going to have pity on us. I don’t think so. If they could, they would run it up on us in a heart beat. Let’s not be soft. It’s football. Football is a very tough game.

  189. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:15 pm

    It’s not a rule whitey.

It’s a sport with guidelines, philosophies, and schemes.

How do you feel about the word “Fair” ?

Please provide an answer and we’ll go from there

  190. whitey September 27, 2010 4:17 pm

OK, now to get ready for LaTech. Go Warriors!!!!!!

  191. Markazulu September 27, 2010 4:18 pm

Whitey I understand where your coming from the thing is though taking a knee with 5 minutes left just seems funky they could’ve at least ran another play they talk about playing hard for 60 minutes, 4 quarters a FULL game. An I’ll give UH credit they did for the most part play hard. I for one am glad that we didnt try to rack up the score cuz that good sportsmanship I would say from UH but I mean taking a knee when theres 5 minutes left is unheard of. You tell your guys to play hard for 60 minutes but taking a knee with that much time left kinda contradicts there statement. But I’m not gonna argue it as much though cuz we got the W an no disrespect to Charleston Southern but the game was determined at Half Time. I mean under the circumstances I could understand we had a huge lead but the key thing is they told them to play hard for 60 minutes…

  192. whitey September 27, 2010 4:19 pm

cool, you the one who brought up the rule about “get out or quit”, not me. You just trying to cirumvent the question like a true politician. I just going wait to see if you can find the rule, so guuuuuuud rock!!!!!

  193. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:20 pm

Kazz, your vendetta is certain people. That’s your right, but the realistic side is there are two very finessed teams out there that Hawaii will be playing home and away.

No moral victories with words and could of, should of , would of.

They both belong in the top 25, just like Hawaii was in 06 and 07, but when the game is over, accept what it is if the the other team is the victor.

  194. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:20 pm

    RE: Running up the score…

All I will say is this.

When the Rainbow Wahine softball team attended the WAC awards banquet this past season during the WAC softball tourney, they entered the ballroom to a slew of near silence and evil stares according to the online blog set up for Katie Grimes.

The Wahine had mercy-ruled their conference sisters to the point of embarrassment.

As a fan it’s honestly hard to sit and watch a blowout, even moreso when it’s an FCS team or a lower division opponent. On October 19th, I won’t be making much noise for the Wahine softball team when they face Christian Brothers University because there is no point. It won’t be pretty and it wont be close.

I guess it depends on how it’s done. If you are just plain BAD-A__, and wipe out fellow Division 1 opponents, then no can help, just ask the Wahine. If your opponent is of a “lesser god” (as Bobby Curran likes to say), the expectation of mercy is there.

As long as our head coach doesn’t send away our starters to change into street clothes at the half and are allowed to roam the sidelines looking like guests, then I have no problem with the score.

  195. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:21 pm

    Whitey,

I never said the word ” rule”

Dont spin it like a typical liberal.

Answer the question, how do you feel about the word,” fair?”

  196. d1島 September 27, 2010 4:21 pm

    thanks wafan and expat.

    mih,

I heard it is “goodwill” from the UHAD that the students get the benefits prior to the fees being instituted.

  197. whitey September 27, 2010 4:22 pm

markazulu, well said and basically understand what most of the Tsaikos are saying, but me I may be softhearted, but believe the aloha spirit is what makes us better than most. And for that, I congratulate Coach Mc and the Warriors.

  198. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:22 pm

  201. whitey September 27, 2010 4:27 pm

I wonder if the moose going get playing time this week?? He just like one moose, charge and run over to catch the offensive players. He even make tackle without helmet.

  202. Pomai September 27, 2010 4:28 pm

Whitey – the only problem with taking the knee is that you had all of 2nd an 3rd stringers in, they should be allowed to play the game and that means trying to score. I don’t think Mills would have seen that as running up the points. I remember when JJ only called off the dogs when he was ahead by at least 42 points. But hey I know if I put in the time in pratice an was a 2nd or 3rd stringer and I got a chance to get in the game, I’d want to score.

  203. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:28 pm

Focus on the question whitey, you implicated the word rule, not me. Yet you try to pin point me on something that you said.

When you go golfing, if you shoot birdie, do you score the other person a birdie also?

  204. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:29 pm

It’s ok to be “soft”, but not too soft.

My advice to stay like the White Rabbit candy.

Hard but kinda soft and confusing at the same time. Like “am I supposed to eat the thin clear wrapper too???”

    Keep people guessing… 😆

  205. Garret September 27, 2010 4:30 pm

This website provides a nice list of the top 8 recruits at every position in California. All of the QBs are already committed, with USC getting #1 and #5. About half of the recruits are already committed, but the WAC 6 only has 1 of them (SJSU). Now that the recruiting classes are filling up for other schools, maybe UH can swoop in for some of the uncommitted players on the list.

    http://www.calihighsports.com/2011footballrankings.html

  206. whitey September 27, 2010 4:30 pm

d1, saw rogers and he said he going be at the home game honoring the team when they won the national champ. if you going be there for that game, look him up. nice guy and still in good shape.

  207. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:31 pm

The biggest DOO DOO move we ever did when we had the lead was allowing our starters to change into regular clothes, cruise the sideline, and sign autographs for fans while a game was taking place.

That was a real dirty move.

  208. whitey September 27, 2010 4:32 pm

    Yep!!!!!

  209. Garret September 27, 2010 4:33 pm

With all of his hard work on special teams, I wish that Jordan Monico had gotten a carry. Even if it was just a run up the middle, having him be able to run the ball during a game in front of family and friends would have been a great reward for his hard work all season.

  210. whitey September 27, 2010 4:33 pm

because he made a birdies also. hahahahahahaaaaaaaa

  211. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:33 pm

    Whitey,

At least I know Coach Mack wouldn’t allow that.

  212. Shoko September 27, 2010 4:34 pm

    Garret #24:

“*Individual* awards tend to come when a team wins. Earning the wins will insure that many UH players will get WAC awards–both the weekly ones and the end-of-year ones. If wins, everything else takes care of itself. If UH loses, individual awards do not matter.”

Players are nominated for their game performance. They may not win, but when he play their hearts out on the field and gain recognition in the form of being simply nominated, and not POW, thats nothing to frown about. Thats the point I was trying to make.

  213. CoolEthan September 27, 2010 4:35 pm

So in Whitey’s Fantasy land world, Next time Hawaii scores a touchdown ( and extra point), don’t forget to add 7 points to the other team. ( Nevada, Boise, la Tech, what’eva;s)

There is no such thing as competition in Whiteys World.

  214. Kazz September 27, 2010 4:35 pm

So… is it safe to say John Hardy-Tuliau is the REAL DEAL?

What is it with that #33? I loved the GRIT of Wadsworth last year and Hardy-Tuliau is looking to also be Mr. Johnny On Da Spot!!!

  215. Na Koa Mike September 27, 2010 4:36 pm

Don’t forget the Hawaii Bowl Foundation’s Beer Fest is on Thursday, Sept. 30th. A portion of the proceeds will go to Na Koa.

  216. Markazulu September 27, 2010 4:38 pm

We can all agree though Jordan Monico is a BEAST.. On special teams the guy needs to find a spot on Defense or maybe even offense I know he was playing running back but with how beast he was playing on special teams I thought they would put him at like safety or something.

  217. Garret September 27, 2010 4:40 pm

    Shoko,

Now I understand your point. Paredes was nominated for his performance (Moniz was nominated for offense), but he didn’t win because the Nevada player had a great game when his team won at BYU. So, he was honored with the nomination and he’ll win weekly awards when UH beats teams like Nevada, BSU, or Fresno.

Da candy is da candy… da thin clear wrapper is da aloha spirit that wraps da candy. No one else in da country is Hawaii. No one else in da country get aloha spirit. We no need be like everybody else because we not everybody else. We are Hawaii. We do what we do because we are a unique people… many have said we are a very compassionate people.

We are not like big schools.

We may end up going independent. Do we want this negative stuff following us, then get troubles trying to schedule games? The past can get us into trouble in da future.

Also nominated on defense: sophomore cornerback Jamar Taylor, Boise State; sophomore safety Phillip Thomas, Fresno State; junior linebacker Corey Paredes, Hawai’i; junior linebacker Jay Dudley, Louisiana Tech; junior safety Donyae Coleman, New Mexico State; and junior linebacker Bobby Wagner, Utah State.

Don’t see the Hawaii games on this list for the Vegas sportbooks.

Speaking of cheap shots, theres alot of talk going on about Nevada’s offensive-lineman John Bender put on BYU’s defensive tackle, Romney Fuga. Fuga is out with a ACL tear and is out for the season. Bender mentions he was sorry and it was not intentional during a press conference. He (Bender) has been getting alot of hate mail and BYU fans wants him suspended for the season.

Would Colt fit in with the Chicago Bears???? I think he would if he got a shot. GB is using the short passing game and doing quite well. This is Colt’s strength.

  230. Hoohiki September 27, 2010 4:55 pm

Kazz, wait until Tom Heffernan gets done with JHT. In a couple years he’ll bulk up and then he’ll be “really” the real deal. I’m excited about the freshmen we have on the roster.

  231. Hoohiki September 27, 2010 4:57 pm

    How’s it going Whitey?

  232. RedZone September 27, 2010 4:58 pm

Too bad after the last game I was thinking that they should give Monico a shot at linebacker. Oh well…..

  233. RedZone September 27, 2010 4:59 pm

    UH 45 – LT 13.

  234. RedZone September 27, 2010 5:00 pm

    Oops make that UH 45 – 10.

  235. Michigan Warrior September 27, 2010 5:01 pm

REdZone… I was thinking the same thing after he made his third special teams tackle in the game… he likes to hit, and hit hard… put him in on defense!

  236. whitey September 27, 2010 5:02 pm

Hoohiki, trying to find a more “family type” place so we Tsaikos can watch the game. Right now, am going to the dark side merchants, but will continue to look for a bright side merchant. hooooohaaaaaa

  237. Kazz September 27, 2010 5:04 pm

    BTW,

Can something be done to HELP the Wahine soccer program.

Without hesitation, WE NEED A NEW SOCCER HEAD COACH!!!

  238. HawaiiMongoose September 27, 2010 5:07 pm

    Garret,

Jordan actually did get 3 carries and picked up 12 yards. It was at the end of the game when Nielson was in at QB. (I was playing close attention ’cause Jordan is a Moanalua grad like me; not too many Moanalua football players make it to the D-1 level!)

  239. HawaiiMongoose September 27, 2010 5:08 pm

    “Paying” not “playing” close attention…

  240. Steve September 27, 2010 5:09 pm

    d1:

The second Uwajima-ya in Seattle is smaller then the Original one, does not carry everything that the Original one does. If that is any help.

  241. Steve September 27, 2010 5:11 pm

    Wafan:

Do you get ESPNU? If so, Wahine Volleyball against New Mexico St. will be shown on Wednesday. Should be 8:00 or 9:00 PM your time, it will be shown here at 5:00 PM.

  242. LizKauai (iPad) September 27, 2010 5:19 pm

d1- I sent the question on 166 to my daughter.

Haven’t been to Seattle but the Portland (beaverton, I guess) store is huge and filled with all kinds of goodies!

  243. LizKauai (iPad) September 27, 2010 5:21 pm

Whitey, i’d love to see Colt with the Bears. Hoping the Raiders are sorry they let him go… And the Skins…. Well… It’s a matter of time.

  244. wafan September 27, 2010 5:22 pm

    Steve . . .

    No, no ESPNU here.

  245. wafan September 27, 2010 5:24 pm

Best thing for Colt is the ‘Skins and the Raiders end up kicking themselves for a long time.

    Ahhhhh, one can dream, right?

  246. expat September 27, 2010 5:26 pm

About the knee– the offense did try to score. Shane had the series and when they couldn’t it would have been an Enos attempt– not 2nd or 3rd string players looking to get reps and prove themselves. The could have run a regular play on 4th down. But at the same time they got the defensive backups in for more work– which is positive.

There was not much more to learn from running another field goal.

  247. Kazz September 27, 2010 5:27 pm

The TV Guide app on my phone shows a HST start time of 4pm for the Wahine vs NMSU match.

  248. Steve September 27, 2010 5:31 pm

    Kazz:

You are right, it is 4:00 PM, just checked Oceanic Channel Listing.

  249. Shoko September 27, 2010 5:37 pm

Ah, Uwajima-ya. I miss that place. Next best place to Star Market.

  250. wafan September 27, 2010 5:40 pm

    Shoko . . .

    Were you in Seattle?

  251. Shoko September 27, 2010 5:46 pm

    Wafan,

Yes, use to live in Gig Harbor for awhile until I moved due to a job transfer.

  252. Shoko September 27, 2010 5:52 pm

Clarification. Didn’t live in Seattle, but lived in GH then moved south to Cali. Wife has family in WA tho. We go up there often, but not enough…at least according to my wife’s family members.

  253. Kazz September 27, 2010 5:54 pm

Not that it matters, but how does NMSU vball look this year?

Are we going to have at least ONE WAC opponent that will make us sweat somewhat?

  254. Manoa September 27, 2010 6:00 pm

In addition to Uwajimaya, I liked Central Market in Poulsbo (good takeout and sushi as well as great grocer)– they had sister stores in the Seattle area, including Bainbridge Island, good takeout, sushi and Japanese items.

  255. wafan September 27, 2010 6:00 pm

Gig Harbor is a nice area. Thought about buying a home there but the thought of driving over and back on those bridges changed my mind. Add the toll on top of that and it really became a financial matter. Oh well. Still a nice place to visit.

I used to live out in Poulsbo for 10 years. Liked that place. Funniest thing was I was the only minority on staff in the entire school district. Yep, the token minority hire.

  256. wafan September 27, 2010 6:00 pm

    Manoa . . .

I used to do the Santa photos out at Central every year. Did I take yours?

  257. Manoa September 27, 2010 6:05 pm

Poulsbo was nice motorcycle ride (took the Bainbridge ferry). Stop to pick up fresh salmon, or grab seafood in the small retail area near the harbor. Nice place. Wafan, you must have stopped by Central Market then–owned by a Japanese-American family.

Seattle is nice, but the dreary weather gets to me.

  258. Manoa September 27, 2010 6:09 pm

No Santa photo, but stopped there whenever I went out that way.

  259. Stephen Tsai September 27, 2010 6:51 pm

Do you think UH will be recruiting players from Kukui High this year?

  260. Stephen Tsai September 27, 2010 6:53 pm

OK, this is reality, but I heard UH is recruiting a player whose first name (or nickname) is Puka.

  261. Stephen Tsai September 27, 2010 6:54 pm

OK, I looked him up. Puka Lupa.

Anyway, he’s something like No. 4 on the UH board.

  262. chopsueyboy September 27, 2010 7:04 pm

    Wafan,

Son got supervisor job today at Best Buy Issaquah new store.

    Aloha Northgate

  264. Steve September 27, 2010 7:15 pm

    ST:

I heard there are 5 5-Star players, at Kukui High, that want to go to UH. 1 receiver, 1 offensive lineman, 1 defensive lineman, 1 linebacker, and 1 defensive back.

  265. HawaiiMongoose September 27, 2010 7:18 pm

It’s confirmed, the WAC membership committee will hear presentations tomorrow from Montana, Texas State, Texas San Antonio, Seattle and Denver:

    http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2010/09/27/bmurphy/wac_membership_committee_hear_presentations_five_schools_includi

This could work out well for both the WAC and UH. If the WAC adds all five schools, and UH moves its non-football sports to the Big West but remains an associate member of the WAC for football only (like Temple in the MAC), then travel expense would be reduced for everyone and the WAC would have nine members playing football and ten members playing non-football sports which is ideal for scheduling.

  266. cheepono September 27, 2010 7:25 pm

sounds like puka is a long shot.

  267. Stephen Tsai September 27, 2010 7:36 pm

I like the idea these schools are making presentations. That indicates interest, no?

  268. TYaiea September 27, 2010 7:43 pm

I think it was last football season for the Div. II championship Montana vs Villanova (I believe) and they were playing with heavy snow falling. Wow! Field was complete white with snow. Does it snow often there during the regular season? Wonder if our Warriors can play in that kind of weather. Brrrrrrrrr. Imua Na Koa. Do the Haka for the dawgs…..

  269. HawaiiMongoose September 27, 2010 7:53 pm

ST, Benson is downplaying the discussions as exploratory, but it seems to me that all of these schools except Montana have compelling reasons to join the WAC.

    – Texas State is investing tens of millions of dollars to upgrade its stadium to FBS size

    – Texas San Antonio desperately needs an FBS conference home for its non-football sports, otherwise its plan to field an FBS football team will be derailed

    – Seattle has made the move back up to Division 1 but has no conference to play in

    – Denver is 500 miles away from its nearest competition in the Sun Belt

I suspect Montana is on the fence but its athletic director has made some comments in the past few months suggesting the Grizzlies could benefit by moving up to the next level.

  270. Old Diver September 27, 2010 7:58 pm

At this point we need the best players possible even if their name is Hula Hoop.

  271. Old Diver September 27, 2010 8:01 pm

Looks like Jordan Monico has only one speed on his gear shift, “Full Blast”.

  272. Steve September 27, 2010 8:05 pm

The way Jordan Monico plays, he could turn out to be another Cory Paredes.

  273. palolo September 27, 2010 8:21 pm

I wonder if Jordan can play baseball like Dad Mario.

  274. al September 27, 2010 8:47 pm

it would be nice to see 42k at the stadium this saturday.

  275. al September 27, 2010 8:49 pm

no, mario monico was a very great baseball player. he was hawaii’s version of hall of famer rod carew.

  277. al September 27, 2010 8:51 pm

so we finally got it right on saturday, didn’t we?

…the all black uniforms is the way to go.

so, now may we have a black out?

  278. skycap September 27, 2010 8:53 pm

Charleston Southern, Coaching Staffs, Players, thanks for coming to Hawaii along with your

Supporters. No matter what happened on the field they never gave up your team had allots

of Respect, Good Spirit, Sportsmanship, But most of all a Big Heart.

Good thing for Charleston Southern they are still tied for “First Place” in there Conference.

Talk about take a knee USC, should have taking a knee from the first snap and through out

the whole game that would have been nice.

Colorado could have done the same take a knee from the third quarter.

  279. Ipu Man September 27, 2010 8:53 pm

Can we paint the field black, also? I’m serious…

  280. Garret September 27, 2010 8:54 pm

Francis Maka was signed by the Spokane Shock today.

DL Maka, 6-2 255, is a rookie to the AFL, but he is no stranger to football. Last season, Maka played for an indoor football league as a member of the Arkansas Diamonds where he recorded 6.5 sacks with 23.5 tackles in only nine games. Before his time with the Diamonds, Maka finished his collegiate career at the University of Hawaii where he recorded 2.5 sacks in two seasons.

  281. Slugger September 27, 2010 8:56 pm

    BHF2,

Here’s an article about Kainoa Pe’a who’s playing at NAU. He’s graduating this December. Mahalo, Doris, for helping him get to NAU. He & Ikaika Mahoe started together. I remember them coming to our Welcome Picnic, and it made me smile to be called “Aunty” by the boys.

Pe’a, who comes from a musical family known on the island for their cooking of kalua [kah-LOO-ah] pig, serves as one of the inspirational leaders in the pregame Haka dance performed by the team before each game.

“It is a war dance to get us ready mentally, physically and spiritually,” said Pe’a, who also plays several instruments including the Ukulele. “It pumps us up including the fans and crowd. It is just a wonderful thing that we do.”

His Hawaiian influence extends beyond his teammates as an active member of NAU’s HAPA Hawaiian Club, whose primary goal is promoting, and educating students and Flagstaff’s community about the Hawaiian culture. He has helped recruit several of his teammates to perform at the annual Lu’au, one of the top events on campus each spring.

It’s great to see things that I started at NAU (Hawaiian club, use of phonetic pronounciation of Hawaiian words) still being carried on.

Weber State is playing at NAU November 13th…

  282. madeinhawaii September 27, 2010 8:56 pm

    Ipu man..

No need to paint the whole field black.. just paint a number of black figures that look like defenders onto the turf…

  283. al September 27, 2010 8:56 pm

tks for the maka news. i always thought that he should have smelled the field a lot more than he did.

  284. papajoe2 September 27, 2010 9:00 pm

ST #260 & 261. Sounds like there may be a hole in your story eerrrrrrrrr……..alrighty then.

  285. Ipu Man September 27, 2010 9:00 pm

    mih, ninja turf? hmmmm…

But I like the whole field to be black…

And then we turn out the lights, too…

  286. al September 27, 2010 9:02 pm

yah, every school should start painting their fields the same colors as their uniforms. then, let’s see what the no clue at all admin will do?

it is a totally unfair advantage that needs to be addressed.

mih, that is the most innovative approach that i have heard yet. haha, the thirteenth man advantage!

that would help our special teams unit. we will never be caught again with only ten guys on tghe field or by the time they count the images on the field it will be well over so we wouldn’t get another illegal sub penalty.

  287. Ipu Man September 27, 2010 9:09 pm

The Bears won so doubt they would want Colt.

49ers could use him, along with RGM, Rivers and ______?

  291. kama krab September 27, 2010 9:14 pm

It will be interesting to see what happens with the WAC over the next couple of months. In my heart I hope we are able to bring in these schools to at least save the WAC from crumbling for the time being so that we can win enough and build enough to attract another conference to take us. In my mind I am thinking who the hell is going to come out and watch UT-San Antonio or Texas State.

I just hope that when the decision is made it is made with the best interest of the schools long term viability in mind. If a decision is made in haste I am afraid we will be left in the same place we are sitting in today. Hope things go well over the next several months and we will be in a better place.

  292. Garret September 27, 2010 9:23 pm

News report out of San Antonio about UT-SA and the other schools meeting with the WAC membership committee tomorrow.

    http://www.kens5.com/sports/college/UTSA-officials-to-meet-with-WAC-membership-committee-Tuesday-in-Dallas–103911024.html

  293. Garret September 27, 2010 9:28 pm

The Hawaii Bowl is probably watching things very closely. For at least 1 year, the D-IAA teams that join the WAC will be conference members but wins against them will count as D-IAA wins. So, if the WAC adds Texas State, UT-SA, and Montana, and if UH plays a D-IAA nonconference opponent, then if UH wins all 4 games only 1 of them will count for bowl eligibility.

This would be the case for *all* WAC members. So, the WAC could have a year where very few teams would be bowl eligible and the WAC wouldn’t be able to fill all of its bowl spots.

For example, a team with 12 games scheduled could win their D-IAA nonconference game and the games against conference members Montana, UT-SA, and Texas State, and would have to go 8-4 to be bowl eligible…since only 5 of the wins would count for bowl eligibility. A 7-5 WAC team would not be bowl eligible in that scenario.

  294. cocobean September 27, 2010 9:33 pm

Montana, Seattle, Texas State, UT-SA. Doesn’t matter. I’ll still renew my season tickets as will a lot of other die hards.

Mongoose, it’s the best case scenario I’ve heard so far. It’ll be a hard sell at first but fans will come around. The only other alternative for the disgruntled will be supporting their favorite high school team. UH is the really the only game in town.

Those schools should get better over time with 85 scholarships instead of 60.

  295. cocobean September 27, 2010 9:40 pm

Fans gotta remember UH started out where those schools are now.

  296. Slugger September 27, 2010 9:42 pm

Montana brings lots of fans to their games in Flagstaff. They will drive large RVs to town and reserve spaces for tailgating a year in advance. If they join the WAC, they’d have to change their tailgate setup for games here, but I’m sure they’d bring a good size crowd. Better to be in Hawaii where it’s warm than in snow country. No news on the Big Sky site re: Montana’s interest.

  297. LizKauai (macbook) September 27, 2010 10:10 pm

Hawaii 5-0… still liking it a lot!

    Missed MNF, dang…

ok. you can tell me the score now…

    🙄

  298. LizKauai (macbook) September 27, 2010 10:11 pm

cocobean- yup. It’s all about helping the kids!

  299. HawaiiMongoose September 27, 2010 10:15 pm

Apparently the five schools meeting with the WAC membership committee tomorrow aren’t the only ones under consideration:

“Commissioner Karl Benson said the committee will see presentations from Texas State and the University of Texas-San Antonio, both of which have expressed interest in joining the teetering league. Other schools are expected to participate in the meeting, including the University of Montana, Seattle University and the University of Denver — though Benson said ‘this is not a complete list of schools’ that might be considered for WAC membership.”

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/50365412-77/state-wac-football-membership.html.csp

Maybe Sac State is still interested.

    300?

  301. RedZone September 27, 2010 10:46 pm

#309… RedZone… are you sure that wasn’t maybe a Rainbow Wahine Classic Tournament or something? Because Na Wahine remained in the Big West until 1996 or 1997, when it finally joined the WAC. They won the ’91-’92 Classic, but can’t remember if they won the ’92-’93 one.

I think ’92-’93 was the year Coach Goo went almost undefeated, with just a couple of losses, and they still didn’t get invited to the Big Dance. I kinda remember it because that’s the year I got out of active Army service and came back home.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I saw a dr on Wed for this. She said to use braces, limit activity, take ibuprofen, and come back in 3 weeks. She mentioned physical therapy but didn’t elaborate. I’m concerned because I have to go back to work tomorrow and my wrists hurt just as much as Weds. I thought it might help to do the gliding, stretching, and strengthening exercises I found on the ‘net, but I don’t want to cause anymore damage. As long as I don’t push my wrists too far and make them hurt a lot more, will I be doing any additional damage?

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

I would explore following recent topics and raising the amount of write ups you put up and I guarantee you’d begin seeing some amazing traffic in the near future. Just a thought, good luck in whatever you do!

Hi there, I’ve recently installed windows 7 rc-32bit on my dell inspirion 9300. The install was pretty slick, only needing to be connected via wire to the lan to get the updates that enabled the graphics and the wireless.* One problem though. No sound. I did manage after a whole lot of searching to download a sigmatel driver from dell (R90698).* Now in the description of the driver it says it is for the sigmatel stac 9750 ac97. However, when installed it only comes up as a sigmatel c-major sound device. In the control panel it only shows one option for sound setup (stereo), rather than under XP where it showed options to choose the 5.1 setup with control to the subwoofer. Sound currently comes out of the two front speakers and the sub but the two rear (physically top) speakers are silent.* Does anyone have an idea how I might be able to get all the options to work?
