Rausch named No. 2 QB

It’s official: Brent Rausch has been named the No. 2 quarterback. Rausch and Bryant Moniz, the No. 1 quarterback, were the only QBs to take snaps during today’s 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

Also today:

• Slotback/punt returner Ryan Henry suffered a strained big toe. He said the injury is not serious. Miah Ostrowski took reps as the No. 2 left slotback.

• The Warriors worked on kick-blocking drills. John Hardy-Tuliau, Sterling Jackson and Siaki Cravens were the most successful.

• With the return of defensive back Lewis Walker, the Warriors were able to practice their dollar defense, a six-DB scheme that involves multiple blitzes.

I would think that Colt would be better off getting some playing time in the CFL, especially with its wide open offense, rather than collecting dust as a third option in the NFL. He needs to get some snaps under his belt so that he can show his stuff.

I don’t think the CFL season will last too much longer. Aren’t they about in mid season already. Plus, to get ready with plays, timing, even rules, etc., this probably is another wasted year for Colt. Warren Moon and Doug Flutie (5’8″) are some of the top NFL qbs that I can think of played in the CFL. Does anybody know of anyone else?

  14. Garret August 16, 2010 7:52 am

I agree with papajoe2–it is too late for Colt to go to the CFL this season. He missed their training camps, preseason, and half of their regular season. Every CFL team is limited in how many non-Canadians they can have, which limits his roster chances…but what is worse is that he doesn’t know the system for any of the teams right now and since they are at midseason they really can only pick up QBs that can play right away.

Next season Colt will have to decide between the CFL and NFL before training camps begin. I’ve been following the CFL ever since UH players have been playing there and I cannot remember a since case where a QB was cut from an NFL team during the NFL preseason and was able to get onto a CFL team unless that QB had already played for that CFL team before.

  15. Garret August 16, 2010 7:52 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka Kakou:

Another busy day – organizing & getting ready for this coming weekend’s community service project. Will post the updated core information later on today.

However, the one roadblock we’ve run into is not being able to get the use of a vehicle with a hitch to get our boat from storage in Kapa`a Valley mauka of Kawainui Marsh to our house in Enchanted Lake and then to one of the Kailua waterways & back to the house during the week and to & from our house to the Kailua waterway on Saturday. We keep the engine here at the house.

The brand-new boat, engine & trailer were donated to the organization in July, 2007, just for these kinds of community service projects when we were still driving our VW Bug. We realized back then we’d have to make arrangements to borrow a truck, but we really were not able to start planning a waterways service project until the spring of 2009.

So far we’ve been unsuccessful in finding someone with a truck/hitch to help us out so we decided to attach the trailer to our 1988 Camry we’ve been driving since our Bug was destroyed by a Hummer in late August, 2007.

For three weeks now, we’ve been trying to locate a body shop who’ll attach the hitch to haul the trailer to our car, but we’ve run into a supply/demand conumbrum. We didn’t realize that each vehicle uses a different attachment system – and all the shops (so far seven from Kailua to Waipahu) we contacted no longer carry the necessary supplies for a 22-year-old car. To custom-make a hitch would cost us somewhere between $500 – $700 which we cannot afford.

Any suggestions for a body shop? According to the guys we’ve talked to, it will take maybe as much as an hour to put together – once we get the proper connectors.

LizK – what games will you be attending? I gather USC and what are the other two?

Pomai: Did you see my post last night?

Not going be able to make practice tomorrow, maybe Friday.

For those who will be driving to/around Manoa this week, heed the advice from the school regarding traffic changes to accomodate dorm move-ins.

Motorists are advised to be especially vigilant along Dole Street due to the increased traffic activity, and frequent stopping or slowing of cars.

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, students moving into Hale Aloha (Ilima, Lehua, Lokelani and Mokihana), Johnson Hall, Hale Anuenue, Hale Kahawai and Hale Laulima and freshmen moving into Frear Hall and Gateway House will be queued along Lower Campus Road. Residents will not be allowed to unload along Dole Street

Please note that on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the east-bound lane of Dole Street fronting residence halls will be coned off to assist with active unloading. No parking will be allowed along Dole Street during moving hours.

  62. Those Waipio kids are amazing. Their accomplishments are a clear example of how a lot of baseball being played through out the year can have a big impact against kids that don’t have that much playing time year around.

For the softball side, maybe one day it will expand to where the local Hawaii girls will have more games and tourneys to compete in like their mainland Cali counterparts. Cause right now on the softball side, putting physical talent aside, the local Hawaii girls aren’t anywhere near the Cali girls in terms of how many games they get to play in one year.

For baseball in Hawaii, that doesn’t seem like an issue.

Is there any excitement in finalizing who will be the starters on defense and offense?

Seems like with the QB position settled, and the slots, little interest in individual players at other positions.

    Greater excitement during “recruiting” wars!!!

yea, ditto, al, any indications from the 2 unofficial visitors over the weekend? is it take one package deal? what position does the other play? stats?

  77. A-House August 16, 2010 12:09 pm

Happy Birthday Colt, Mia, & Cayman!

From today’s Raiders’ practice, it appears that Campbell and Gradkowski are 1 and 2. No mention at all of Colt. It looks pretty grim as I presume he’s sitting at #4 without any reps to make a move up. I really hope he can make it to Saturday and play against the Bears; but at this point, that’s probably a real long shot.

As Bobby Curran said this morning, the struggling teams try hard to win their preseason games. The better teams work their starters a little but try to spread the work around to see who can play. I’m afraid the Raiders are in the first category and won’t ever find out about Colt until after he’s gone.

  82. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2010 12:32 pm

    Mystery solved:

The loud music was for warmups.

However, because it took so long to set up, the music ended up being played during drills.

  83. A-House August 16, 2010 1:04 pm

Music for warm ups? Like music for plants to “ease their pain” ( Field of Dreams ) and grow healthy and produce lots of flowers?

My late Mom used to talk to her plants everyday – seemed to work as we had lots of anthuriams and orchids.

Whoa, “things are looking up” ( puggy kid in tv commercial )

#77 as history tells a story regarding recruiting.

typically come monday the day after the official visit, “no news is not good news.”

  87. al August 16, 2010 1:23 pm

it happened to kurt warner…it could happen again.

kurt warner was cut early before playing a down with the packers. he ended up with arena football for two years then got his big break playing in the now defunct nfl europe where he led the league in passing, etc.

he then got a shot and waited his time as injuries by those ahead of him led to his getting in the game.

the rest they say is history.

  88. al August 16, 2010 1:24 pm

what happened with warner is what many are saying. colt just needs to play and prove it.

  89. Stephen Tsai August 16, 2010 1:25 pm

    A-House

Several years ago, I wrote about two guys who were going to walk on at UH.

I got an e-mail from a reader scolding me. He said such stories take away from reporting on spring practice. Never mind that we also had a spring-practice story that day.

The two guys were Tyson and Landon Kafentzis, and the story was on how the Kafentzis family legacy continues.

Every year, there are off-the-depth-chart players who will emerge. Last year, it was Bryant Moniz. Before that, it was Jon Medeiros. I remember when Shane Austin decided to attend UH. It was a short item. You never know.

Best wishes to the young men of Waipio – you make us all proud. Kudos to the many companies out there that support the parents of the players who are away from their jobs to travel with the team.

  94. Derek August 16, 2010 1:49 pm

Stephen, is it Spencer Jackson or Sterling Jackson or is it another player? I’d like to see Allen Sampson be given a shot on returning both kickoffs and punts. I thiink he’s a player.

Any progress on Dee Maggitt and Beau Yap?

I’m waiting for the first recruit to commit to UH for the 2011 season. Maybe recruits that have been offered are waiting to see how the Warriors do against USC. If we win that first game, maybe the flood gates will open.

I have a sneaky feeling that the Hawaii-USC game will come down to a field goal. Who has the edge right now, Enos or Hadden? I also hope Dunnachie will be more consistent this year. Last year, it was like feast or famine.

Which one is more correct: We want to beat USC becasue….

    1) It’s the first game

    2) We’ve never beaten them

    3) If we win, we might be ranked

    4) We don’t like Lane Kiffen

    USC’s weakness: their secondary

    Hawaii’s strength: our receving corps

You would think we can exploit them and score a lot of points on them. If we can score early by throwing the ball, Rolovich should not let up. We’ve seen Oregon and Stanford put up a ton of points against was thought to be a good Trojan defense. I really think the USC mystigue is over and they have lost a lot of good players. Remember, they also lost to Washington and Arizona and Oregon State gave them a scare too and Arizona St. played them tough too. Credit UHs coaching staff…I really think Coach Mack and the staff know that we can beat USC. USC will be in for a surprise!!!!

And the band played on….they kicked up the music at the end of practice when they went into the huddle with Coach Mack. Some of the players continued to work out…right on, right on, right on…

Glad to see that Lewis Walker is back on the field. Also, Siaki Cravens.

Talked to Brysen Ginlack’s Mom. He’s a BIG dude.

it would be great if rgm makes the cut.

chad owens tearing up the cfl.

receivers will definitely take notice and would really want to come to hawaii, aka receiver university.

My good deed for the day: showing a young girl & her parents the way to the Softball office which is IN the equipment room in the women’s locker room wing of the SSC.

I think Cool-en da gang need a more visible office.

    Not necessarily bad news.

But it gets complicated when Oregon State is involved.

It’s easier to get an early commit when UH is the only D-1 school involved.

    A-House,

    Like 13 or 14…

  111. Slugger,

Coach Coolen is on the 3rd floor with the rest of the coaches, but the other softball coaches are indeed spread out.

Maybe that will be resolved once the moving of the other coaches into the old offices previously occupied by the football coaches are completed?

  112. al August 16, 2010 2:25 pm

  127. Michigan Warrior August 16, 2010 3:27 pm

Like I said during and after the Raiders-Cowboys game… Campbell was so-so, but Boller was totally not impresive. To top it all off… the Raiders receivers are mediocre at best. They had a terribly difficult time trying to get any separation against Dallas to help out their own QB’s.

So, we’ve got a struggling team trying to look as impressive as possible during the preseason, but still looking weak on the offensive side of the ball. We’ve got a coach who has no confidence in his QB’s and receivers, since they’ve not given him any reason to have any confidence in them… which then leads to Colt not being able to do much of anything since he’s the newest kid on the block, still learning the playbook, behind junk, moderately established QB’s coming back from injuries. Tough spot to be in.

While it looks like we might be able to exploit USC’s secondary, we first gotta give our own QB’s the time to go through progressions, and receivers to make their reads and then gain that separation, so that the ball can be delivered. Please, please, please (O-line), give our QB the time to throw!

At least Colt got mentioned today. Hopefully, he’ll be given a good look to battle with Boller for the third spot. Hard to believe he lost out to Bartel when he was with the Redskins.

  136. Ipu Man August 16, 2010 4:57 pm

Campbell said the Raiders accomplished what they set out to do.

“We really didn’t get deep into our playbook,” said Campbell, who completed 7 of 13 passes for 49 yards. “We kind of just kept it simple. “…

  137. Ipu Man August 16, 2010 4:59 pm

  138. Curt August 16, 2010 5:00 pm

    DPK, d1

Right on. Good to hear Rausch doing well. A couple years ago on the WB, ST said Rausch looked pretty good during the unofficial practices. Be great to finally see him play.

  139. Curt August 16, 2010 5:11 pm

I wonder if June Jones would consider going back to the NFL? He’d probably consider it if the team was down in the dumps big time and he had total control. First thing he would do is probably secure Colt as his QB.

  140. wafan August 16, 2010 5:11 pm

  141. wafan August 16, 2010 5:24 pm

    Good for Rausch!

    #2 just try harder!!!

  142. Derek August 16, 2010 5:32 pm

The worst thing a QB can do (besides throwing a pick), is holding on to the ball too long and trying to elude on rushing linemen and linebackers trying to make a play. Bad things can happen. 1) Get sacked, losing yardage and making the next play much more difficult 2) Fumbling the ball, change of possession, field position, 3) Offensive lineman called for holding 4) Throwing an interception anyway. In Bill Cowher’s lips to his Steeler QB during one of the games “throw the ball away.” On any passing play, the QB knows there is a predetermined time when he goes through his reads and deliver the ball. QBs shouldn’t do more than they can handle. Rolovich should know this and ingrain the QBs to throw the ball away if the play is not there. It’s always better to live for another play to try to pick up a more manageable first down. All too often the last 2 years, our QBs have gotten sacked. Some of the fault is the offensive line, but the one person that gets sacked is the QB. So, I submit that the real fault is the QB. “Throw the ball away, if there’s nothing there.” There is actually an art to it.

USCs strength supposedly is the defensive line. Thus, Rolovich should know what kinds to plays to run to slow down the pass rush.

It doesn’t have to be close. I remember when Paul Johnson’s offense and Garrett Gabriel ran over BYU 56-14. Wouldn’t that be fun again. Or when Rolovich threw 8 TDs against BYU and Chad Owens went crazy. I miss those types of games.

  143. d1島 August 16, 2010 5:34 pm

    d1,

Good questions. I don’t follow the NFL much but I would think that June Jones would want a perennial loser who’s willing to let him run things his way. The Raiders probably qualify on the losing part but I don’t think June would work for Al Davis.

  158. djmitcho August 16, 2010 9:03 pm

  159. Curt August 16, 2010 9:06 pm

Detroit, St. Louis, and Kansas City have been doing poorly the last few years. And of course, St. Louis just picked up Sam Bradford in the draft. June would probably like that except that Colt already has a ton of experience in the run & shoot.

  162. protector August 16, 2010 9:17 pm

    al on #106,

Totally agree. And if they let Darius Bright play this year (because of his special teams ability)

instead of red-shirting him, he’d be a solid candidate to be drafted next year. Originally, I wanted him to play this year, but I’ve kind of changed my mind. If they red-shirt him now, we’d have a dominant wide-out (with an even better understanding of the Offense than he has now) for 2 years when he comes back to play, barring injury. I wouldn’t blame them if they let him play because he seems to have made himself invaluable to the special teams unit.

  163. Kekoa August 16, 2010 9:51 pm

I hope that the Na Koa Bowl raises a lot of money tonight because the UH Athletic Department needs it. While UH is just trying to reduce the deficit and pay for scholarships, schools it is competing against for recruits are moving forward.

Example 1: BSU is looking to add a rumored 16,000 seats to its stadium that currently holds 33,500. They have a special announcement coming in 10 days about this. They could have 50,000 people in their stands in 2012.

    http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2010/08/16/ccripe/boise_state_plans_announce_bronco_stadium_expansion_campaign

Example 2: TCU announced yesterday a $105 million stadium renovation that will be completed in time for the 2012 season. They will actually *reduce* capacity, going from 44,358 to 40,000. However, the luxury seats, club seats, and lounges will make them far more money than what they were making. However, they didn’t focus on the additional money they will be getting–all they wanted to talk about is how the stadium improvements would help recruiting.

Shane Austin proved himself as a bonafide Division I quarterback by last year’s performance.

Brent Rausch must still prove himself as a Division I quarterback. UH is pitted against the mighty Trojans of USC in the season opener. Every play counts to win the game. Do you put in an untested quarterback as the first back up or do you go with the guy who is seasoned in the game?

The law of averages tells you to go with the quarterback with game experience. Practice is very different from real game experience. In my humble opinion, Shane Austin earned the number two slot. Let Brent Rausch prove himself to be the number two quarterback by real game experience and not through practices.

Hope Brent Rausch proves me wrong and the coaches were right and that he will be able to come through if called upon to spell Moniz. We will be watching closely to see him make things happen. If he does, UH will be able to depend on three proven quarterbacks. If not, and after a few plays to see how he performs, UH could still bank on Shane Austin, our number two quarterback last year and I may add a mighty good one who produced good results.

If Rausch beats Austin for the number two slot, it means UH is strong in the quarterback position. That is good news!
