Monday notes

Today is the first day of the Warriors’ Team Camp.

* * * * *

Defensive back Brandon Leslie is listed as a medical retirement. Leslie, a senior, will remain on scholarship. Leslie began his college career at Georgia Tech before eventually making it to Manoa last year. He played in three games in 2012. Fun fact: His cousin is Ickey Woods. Video: Ickey Shuffle.

Steven Christian, a defensive back who earned his bachelor’s degree last month, is transferring to Oregon State. If he receives a medical hardship, as expected after missing two full seasons because of labrum injuries, he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

* * * * *

The volleyball Warriors supposedly have received a commitment from an outside hitter from Europe. But the player still is awaiting acceptance into UH and we know how that can go.

* * * * *

Kevin Wong, a pro volleyball player and Punahou graduate, was once a consideration for a coaching position with the volleyball Warriors. The schedules could not work out. Wong and Rich Miano launched the successful Spike and Speed beach volleyball clinics this year. Next month, Wong will be a volleyball commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics.

The third Hilina‘i Walk is scheduled for June 29 and 30. It is a benefit to help defray the school expenses for Hilina‘i and to raise awareness for children with special needs. She is the daughter of UH strength coach Tommy Heffernan. The 40-mile walk begins at Hauula Beach Park on the evening of June 29 and ends at the Variety School. If you wish to participate or make a donation, please go to this site: Hilina‘i Walk.

You might remember Franz Yuen as a hard-hitting baseball player from his Punahou and UH days. He’s now a physical therapist. Today also is his birthday.

Birthday wishes to defensive back Ronald Fields. You may tell him that in person when he arrives in Hawaii later this month.

I guess we all are waiting for word from Coach Chow about the lastest DUI incident. A relative of mine was arrested for DUI, but case was dismissed without prejudice when the cop didn’t show up at court because he was a soldier in Afghanistan.

BTW, hope everyone had a nice Father’s Day.

  11. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2012 8:53 am

    Gigi:

If you ever get a speeding ticket, challenge it. There’s no additional penalty for going to court.

And if the prosecutor ever says, “the officer has checked in, but I’d like to offer you a deal …” then decline the offer. I’m pretty sure it’s a bluff and the officer isn’t there.

Then again, if I’m wrong and the officer is there, well, you’re outta luck.

  12. gigi-hawaii June 18, 2012 8:55 am

    Lol, ST. Good one!

ST: just saw the video. Cute Ickey shuffle.

  23. Kaneohe Resident June 18, 2012 9:35 am

Challenge all speeding citations when the officer used a laser device. Those devices are not calibrated by the State Weight and Measures division. That’s the same division that keeps tab on supermarket scales, gas station pumps, etc. Uncalibrated devices aren’t legal to take official measurements. In addition, the logic used in all speeding cases is basically faulty. A careful look at the logic will reveal the error.

  24. gigi-hawaii June 18, 2012 9:40 am

Well, whatever you do, never drive with an open bottle of beer in the car. Hubby did and was ticketed. He failed the walk test because of his flat foot, so he insisted on a breathalyzer test. They had to call for another cop to bring the breathalyzer machine and hubby passed.

Imagine that! Failed the walk test, but passed the breathalyzer test. He wasn’t drunk because he drank only 2-3 sips of the beer.

    Judge fined him $50.

…or even tentatively planning? Then please mention here or email me for inclusion on the 2012 Away Game logistics page.

At this stage, even tentative attendees can see who else might be going and can possibly plan gatherings or even share resources and tips in booking, tickets, ground transportation, etc.

… so, this is what Timmy Chang is doing, prior to heading to Dallas ….

” … The Mililani Trojans also have tweaked their spread offense this off-season and spring under the direction of offensive coordinator Timmy Chang. Chang will be departing in a month to join June Jones’ staff at SMU, but is still coaching at Mililani in the interim. York will take over the offense at the beginning of fall camp. … ”

This is from a MidWeek article on Ryan SPEEDY Reedy, slotback/QB.

    http://www.midweek.com/mililani-slot-back-could-have-major-impact-on-trojans/

  30. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2012 11:00 am

WarriorNY: I hope you are doing well. I read its going to be 97 degrees so stay cool and hydrated.

Thanks for the videos/articles on Royce Pollard and Greg Salas. I hope that Pollard will make the team but it sounds like he is making a great impression already. Salas just has to stay healthy and he will really help the Rams and they know it!

A murderer, sitting in the electric chair, was about to be executed.

“Have you any last requests? asked the chaplain.

“Yes,” replied the murderer. “Will you hold my hand?”

New Team Rule For The Warriors…No Long Hair Coming Out Of Their Helmets….Sheesh…I think there are more important things to worry about….Like Who’s gonna start against USC

  44. Ipu Man June 18, 2012 2:57 pm

I think the long hair scares some of the opponents…especially if it is wild and bushy.

  45. Ipu Man June 18, 2012 3:03 pm

    And bushy beards…

  46. Bigislandkurt June 18, 2012 3:04 pm

    NO long hair?

Wow. Talk about a full-on cultural shift.

Personally, I like the call. It might be good timing too because fashionable long hair and dreads are quickly becoming a thing of the past. It’s sooooooooo 2008.

    BIK

  47. Ipu Man June 18, 2012 3:05 pm

Raiders vs Cowboys, August 13, Monday night football on ESPN…..Hoist the Jolly Roger

  49. Buffoman June 18, 2012 4:08 pm

As I read the article it say they “talked” but it did not sound as though they are staying. If, as I read it, BSU is petitioning the big West for their other team sports, so it sound like they “talked” but are still planning to move on.

  50. Five-to-the-Oh June 18, 2012 4:10 pm

I still think Boise is gone. All that article says is they talked a while back. Now if it were to say talks are on-going, you’d wonder. But why ask for Big West in their other sports if the Broncos weren’t going?

  51. Kevin June 18, 2012 4:30 pm

If long hair scares opponents then those that are scared have no business playing football.

Same with those that are supposedly “intimidated” by black uniforms.

Anyone actually intimidated by colors and split ends are a bunch of marys.

No point in looking intimidating if you cannot perform on the field.

  52. d1shima June 18, 2012 6:41 pm

    Penalty

  53. d1shima June 18, 2012 6:53 pm

    ….if done excessively. Unsportsmanlike conduct.

    But who’s to say? 😈

  54. Slugger June 18, 2012 7:06 pm

    WarriorNY,

Thanks for the video on Salas! Loved seeing him out there on the field making the receptions we know he can make. I’ll have to send that to my St. Louis, MO friends.

  55. SteveM June 18, 2012 7:08 pm

    Must be unsportsmanlike conduct…

couldn’t be “personal foul for hair pulling”, right? 😕

  56. SteveM June 18, 2012 7:17 pm

….that just sounds sooooo wrong. 😯

  57. el burro sabio June 18, 2012 7:19 pm

  63. WarriorNY June 18, 2012 9:00 pm

    Haleakala,

Thanks. I hope you and the Mrs. are good as well. Im sure Maui is perfect this time of year… I’ll def try to stay indoors. The heat out here is miserable cuz its usually humid as well.

Glad you guys liked the Salas vid and Pollard post. Pollard is def making an impression but he has an uphill battle to make the team just based on number of receivers the Jets have.

On a side note, I want to tell you guys how impressed I am with Coach Chow. I just found out he sent a coach to Molokai(where I’m from) to recruit. It’s one thing to say you’re going to recruit the islands but something else altogether to send a coach to an island with 20 total football players and a football program that is just 2 years old. Molokai may not have numbers but we can def produce athletes. I’ve never even heard of any coaches recruiting on Molokai but its so great to see Coach Chow is giving opportunities to even the small communities.

  65. WarriorNY June 18, 2012 9:39 pm

    In regards to Boise,

I hate to say it but why in the world would they turn down the $$$ that the Big East presents… I’d love for them to stay in the mwc but it’s not gonna happen. The Big East will give them tens of millions of dollars in TV money. Just think about the markets the big east represent and the amount of people that will watch their games… To lure Boise St. back to the MWC with mid level markets seems a bit far fetched when considering the big time markets and $$$ the Big East present…

  66. SteveM June 18, 2012 9:41 pm

WarriorNY — please send me an email at stevem.hnl (at) gmail. I’d like to get your email address if you will share it.

  68. A-joe June 18, 2012 11:55 pm

The last time I checked, Boise STILL hasn’t left yet.

I thought they was going get plenny money! All their problems was going be solved! How come they still hanging around! Why they still talking to MOuntain West Conference about staying…

Wait… no can find a place to put their “Olympic” teams? Sheesh! Das easy!

    How ’bout the WAC.

    Oops!… Too unstable. Falling apart.

Okay den… How ’bout the Big West.

    Negative!… BW doesn’t want them back. (Hmmm… I wanda why…)

Okaaayy… why not stick their teams back into the Big Sky or into Conference USA! Eh- Sun Belt!

    -No like.

    -No can.

    -Karl Benson

Sooo,… how come they still around?

Here’s the thing… Boise is like that braddah who woos the pretty girls to fall in love with them, make kids, then bails as soon as a better looking girl comes along. Boise finally hit one grand slam with this rich girl. But she comes with one stipulation:

    No kids.

    Easy.

Boise figured, lets ask an ex for help ‘um. Simple, right? Thing is… the ex’s ‘aint havin’ any of it.

Now, the Big West may give in and take them back. But at what cost? Why should the Big West babysit Boise’s “Olympic teams” while they go off and be Fat Cats with another league?

“Eh, you can try watch my kids while I go play house with my new GF and make Bank? I go pay you small kine.”

What does the Big West get in return? Chump change to cover travel expenses? An extra paltry six figure check?

    Paleeze!

Any benefits or added values comes with accepting Boise’s derelict off-springs?

    Negative.

Why not demand HALF the earnings Boise going get from the Big East to watch their kids! YYEEEAH! NOW we talkin!

‘Aint happenin’. Boise Greedy. Not stupid!

Boise has an infamous track record of being a self centered program. Always looking out for themselves; using others to leverage and propel their self interest and self preservation.

Boise stepped all over the Big Sky to get into the Big West. They kicked the Big West to the curb to get into the WAC. They dropped the WAC like a bad habit to get some sweet MWC. Only to bail in the dead of night for a prettier more lucrative, Big East.

And yet, with all of Boise’s antics there’s one conference willing to give in. That one girl who knows it’s completely wrong but can’t explain why she still sleeps with an ax murderer-

    The Mountain West Conference.

But check dis- The MWC is willing to keep Boise with one catch: Boise’s football gotta stay and be a responsible parent to it’s kids. The MWC is not watching Boise’s kids without Boise’s bread winner around.

Now to Boise, the MWC is an average looking middle class stable girl. But she’s no way in HELL as gorgeous, sexy and as filthy rich as the Big East!! Boise knows if it wants to go fool around, they gotta dump the kids somewhere. Big West looking pretty ideal.

And it’s that very aura of arrogance that’s finally catching up with Boise. They know it. They would’ve left a long time ago if was THAT good.

    But it’s not.

    Boise Not Going.

  69. BigHiloFan2 June 19, 2012 12:10 am
