Milca: ‘Mahalo and aloha’

The Rainbow Wahine’s softball season ended with yesterday’s loss to Nevada in the WAC Tournament. Here’s senior rightfielder Tanisha Milca’s final diary entry:

FRIDAY — With four teams left in the WAC Tournament, we thought our chances of winning it were good as we had defeated all the teams at least once during the regular season. Knowing we were going to play one of our biggest conference rivals, Nevada—which had knocked us out of the tourney the past three years—was extra incentive for today’s game. We wanted end that streak. The game was a battle, but after 10 innings, the outcome once again was unfortunately not in our favor and our 2009 season had finally come to an end.
After our post-game talk, the team circled around for one last “BOWS!” and then the tears began to flow from the seniors. On the ride back to our hotel, I reflected on my four-year career at UH, and I found myself smiling because I realized that I have been extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to play Division I softball for Hawaii. During my time here, I experienced winning a conference championship and played in two NCAA Regionals and one Super Regional.  I also thought about how much I’m going to miss playing the game…miss our three hour practices…and most of all miss playing softball with a great group of girls and coaches.
I am very grateful to Coach Bob and the University of Hawai`i for giving me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream of being a Rainbow Wahine.  As my career comes to an close, I leave knowing that I lived every day to the fullest, gave everything I had, and I have no regrets.  To my teammates past and present, and to future players yet to come, my only words of wisdom are to enjoy every moment because it goes by really quickly.  Work Hard, Play Hard, Be Smart, and Have FUN!!
Mahalo and Aloha,
Tanisha Milca #6

Pisa handled his release with class.

Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa bid a gracious adieu to the Rams after being released Friday.

“I really like the direction they’re going,” he said. “Because the team wasn’t winning, you knew this year was going to be different, and a lot of faces would be different. I didn’t really honestly think it would involve me. But the change is here, it’s come, and I think it’s a good change. If something isn’t working, you’ve got to figure things out.”

“They thought I was too good to be a backup,” Tinoisamoa said. “I’m getting paid too much to be a backup. They had brought that up earlier in the week, so (being released) wasn’t a total surprise.”

  7. Garret May 9, 2009 4:45 am

Even before the draft it was clear that the Rams were planning to replace Pisa. I didn’t realize that he was actually 20 pounds under his listed playing weight…when the new coach emphasizes size over speed, he wasn’t a good fit for their system anymore.

Tinoisamoa, 27, led the Rams in tackles in four of his six seasons but didn’t fit the mold of coach Steve Spagnuolo, who prefers bigger linebackers. Neither Spagnuolo nor general manager Billy Devaney was available for comment Friday, though Spagnuolo said in a statement, “This was a difficult decision based on a lot of factors. I have a great deal of respect for Pisa and wish him all the best.”

Chief among those factors was size. Tinoisamoa was listed at 240 pounds but played at 220 last year. When the Rams announced that Will Witherspoon would move to the weak side and Chris Draft to the middle, the only spot remaining was on the strong side, which requires an even beefier guy who frequently mucks with tight ends. The addition of James Laurinaitis in the second round of the draft further complicated Tinoisamoa’s situation.

  8. Garret May 9, 2009 4:49 am

The NY Times rates Utah State #115, which means that 3 of the 6 lowest rated teams are in the WAC…the bottom 3 of the WAC is lower rated than the bottom of *any* other conference. I hope that all 3 improve quickly, which would earn the WAC some needed respect.

High point: Utah State’s 30-14 win over Hawaii was their first over an F.B.S team with a non-losing record since a 32-30 win over New Mexico State (then 6-3) in 2002.

Players to watch: The most pleasant surprise on last year’s team – outside of the three WAC wins – was the play of the junior quarterback Diondre Borel, who led the team in both passing (1,705 yards and 11 touchdowns) and rushing (632 yards). Borel played very sparingly as a freshman, not attempting a pass and rushing for 10 yards on five carries. Borel, whose best game came in Utah State’s win over Hawaii (223 yards passing, 87 yards rushing), was one of only seven quarterbacks in the country to lead his team in both passing and rushing yards.

Position battle to watch: With the majority of their starters and contributors returning from last year’s team, there are not many positions open to competition.

giving out my congrats to the wahine sball players and the departing seniors on their run thru the WAC tourny. hope they get a bid somewhere so they can extend their aloha for their team and mates a little longer.

Gonna have to hope and wish on Sunday. The NCAA softball tourney selection show is at 10am on ESPNU.

Coach Coolen said many times before that this season would be different than the last and many before as their RPI wasn’t as strong (90-ish I think) and only winning the WAC tourney would get them into the tournament, or at least finishing 2nd, maaaaaaaaybe 3rd.

However, Graham Hayes from ESPN presents some arguements to give Na Wahine a bid if certain circumstances were to happen. This is one of those rare instances where ESPN actually does their homework regarding a UH athletic program:

Now it’s time to reach for the Advil.

The above math leaves 10 spots remaining in the field of 64: six at-large bids and automatic bids in the Atlantic Sun, Conference USA, Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley.

Among the regular-season champions in those four conferences, Creighton might be in the best shape, even if it loses out on the automatic bid in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Its RPI is only 56, but it won the league handily (with a .760 winning percentage to Southern Illinois’ .682) and had wins out of conference against Arizona and Nebraska.

Jacksonville State is a healthy No. 30 in RPI, but its best wins out of Ohio Valley play were doubleheader sweeps against Mercer and Mississippi. It also dropped games the past two weekends (although it did finish with a 21-2 record in its last 23).

In Conference USA, East Carolina lost out on the regular-season title on the final weekend without playing a conference game. While the Pirates beat Campbell and split with Virginia Tech out of conference, Tulsa captured the title on percentage points with a sweep of Southern Miss (due to cancellations, Tulsa was 16-4 to East Carolina’s 19-5).

In terms of at-large profiles, East Carolina took two of three from Tulsa earlier and beat Florida State out of conference (in addition to one-run losses against Michigan, North Carolina and Notre Dame, if you’re looking for a bit of context on the Pirates). Tulsa closed with a 9-1 record in its past 10 games and a 13-2 record in its past 15 games. It also beat Oklahoma State (splitting two games) and Creighton out of conference.

Finally, the Atlantic Sun looks more and more like the leftover part from the piece of the furniture you thought was assembled, the part that looks suspiciously like it plays some rather important load-bearing role. Its four top-60 RPI teams are more than the Big West, Mountain West and WAC, all of which likely will get multiple NCAA tournament bids.

But the Atlantic Sun’s strongest candidate on paper, Florida Gulf Coast, isn’t eligible for the NCAA tournament as it continues the transition to Division I. And out of a group that includes regular-season champ Campbell, Lipscomb and Mercer, only Mercer has top-50 wins against a team other than Florida Gulf Coast: two against Auburn.

So back to those 10 remaining spots. Should all four above regular-season champs — Creighton, Jacksonville State, Tulsa and Campbell — double up and win conference tournaments and automatic bids, here’s how the bubble would look in this projection:

    Last Six In:

    1. Auburn: Just 4-16 in its past 20 but enough quality wins or a good enough RPI.

    2. East Carolina: Top 50 RPI, two wins against Tulsa and one against Florida State.

    3. Arkansas: Top 40 RPI, key April wins versus Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tulsa.

    4. Hawaii: 16-4 in its past 20 and wins versus Oklahoma, Ohio State, Fresno State, Nevada.

    5. Oklahoma State: Just 3-9 versus Big 12’s top six but beat Tulsa twice and Stanford.

    6. Mississippi State: .500 overall, missed SEC tournament, but owns wins against Georgia, Tennessee (twice), Auburn, Purdue, Florida State and Hawaii.

Despite the struggles early on in the season and being eliminated from the WAC tournament, being considered by some to still get an at large bid is quite remarkable and ANOTHER testament to the effort of the Wahine coaching staff and the players.

Class program with class people involved!

HONOLULU – Two University of Hawai`i softball players were named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 team announced by CoSIDA. Seniors Julie Franklin and Clare Warwick were both selected to the district’s second-team.

Franklin, a shortstop from Temple City, Calif., carries a 3.96 grade point average and will be graduating next week with a degree in psychology. She the only player in UH history, other Warwick, to earn the award twice. Franklin is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has been an National Fastpitch Coaches Association, WAC, and UH Scholar-Athlete every season of her career. She has been the top student-athlete for the softball team the past three years. This season, Franklin appeared in 36 games and hit .235 overall with three doubles and three home runs.

Warwick, a third baseman from Canberra, Australia, carries a 3.89 grade point average and will graduate in December 2009 with a degree in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science. She is the only Rainbow Wahine to ever be selected to the CoSIDA District 8 team three times (2007, ’08, ’09). Warwick has started 220 consecutive games for Rainbow Wahine and earned All-WAC honors for the third straight year earlier this week. In her career, Warwick is second all-time in UH histoyr with 159 runs scored and third in hits with 138.

Only six other Rainbow Wahine have ever earned the prestigious honor: Tracy Loo (1992), Joyce Lum (1998), Stacie Hirano (2002), Kate Judd (2002), Tracie Uchima (2004), and Brandi Peiler (2008). Last year was the first time in program history that three players were selected in one season (Franklin, Peiler, and Warwick).

In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must be a starter or significant reserve, must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Voting is done by member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

Schools actually do lose money on most bowls because of the requirements. For instance, if UH goes to the Hawaii Bowl, it has to stay a certain amount of days in a hotel (I’m thinking six) and pay for the meals and ground transportation. Then it has to pony up money for bonuses and gifts.
Now if it’s a regular-season home game, UH only has hotel and ground transportation for two days. No bonuses. Only four meals. No gifts.

  97. Garret May 9, 2009 11:31 am

    A-House,

Bowl payouts *really* vary. You cannot use one of the huge BCS bowl payouts to wonder why some teams lose money when going to a bowl game. You mentioned $14 million for teams that go to the Sugar Bowl…what about the $325k that the New Orleans Bowl paid each team or the $300k that the papajohns bowl is estimated to pay each team? Huge contrast, and going to the low paying bowl games basically guarantees a school will lose money.

There used to be a minimum that a bowl was required to pay, but apparently that changed (according to an article from 2 years ago, so maybe things changed back) and now bowls negotiate with conferences. For example, when Arizona State played in the Hawaii Bowl in 2006 (I was there!), Arizona State just got paid $398k–I’m sure that they lost a lot of money considering they had to fly the team to Hawaii and put them in a Waikiki hotel for a week during holiday season. I’m sure that Notre Dame lost a lot of money by going to the Hawaii Bowl, but they make so much money from the BCS and TV that it doesn’t matter.

I don’t understand why the Big East is okay with the Texas Bowl paying the Big 12 team $750k and the Big East team just $500k when the Big 12 team will have much lower travel costs…but I guess the Big 12 team is a bigger draw for fans. The Big East team is guaranteed to lose money with that low of a payout.

There are a fair number of bowls that pay $750k or less to each team, far lower than the $14 million figure you referenced when wondering why teams lose money by going to bowl games!

  98. Garret May 9, 2009 11:33 am

Here is a slightly old article about bowl payouts.

the Texas Bowl is paying Kansas State $750,000, according to Bob Burda of the Big 12. Its opponent, Rutgers, is getting $500,000, according to Nick Carparelli of the Big East. In the past, bowls had to guarantee at least $750,000. Now they negotiate with conferences.

The Hawaii Bowl, for example, is paying $398,000 to the Pacific-10 for Arizona State’s appearance. But the bowl is requiring teams to guarantee only 1,200 tickets, according to Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon, instead of thousands more as in the past.

  99. Garret May 9, 2009 11:37 am

    Hilo Rain,

From what I understand, no other sport stays in a hotel the night before a home game. The only other big revenue sport is basketball, but they play twice per week and definitely do not stay in a hotel before home games.

Heck, didn’t UH men’s volleyball take a red-eye flight and play a game the day they arrived? Plus, they sleep 3 to a room (football would never do that) and they eliminated the pre-game meal to save money.

If bowl payout is $14,000,000 – does each school receive $14,000,000 or do they split the $14,000,000?

    A-House,

That is a very good question, one without a simple answer unfortunately. Some conferences pool their money, so each conference team gets a share from the total pool and the team that goes to the game might get a small bonus from the pool. Remember that for BCS conference teams, one spot is guaranteed in a BCS game for their conference champion…that money is already figured into their bowl pool that they will split.

For non BCS-conference teams, no BCS payday is guaranteed so there is a big bonus for the team that goes. Also, the other non-BCS conferences get a piece of the BCS bowl payout…so, if $14 mil is paid by the Sugar Bowl for each team, the conference the team is in might get $9 or $10 million. The WAC gives about half to the team in the BCS bowl game and splits the rest.among the other schools.

  112. Garret May 9, 2009 12:18 pm

    A-House,

For the Big East, it looks like making a BCS bowl is worth about a million more than making another big bowl game.

The Big East pays schools that make a bowl game on a tiered basis, with a BCS game worth $2.4 million, the second bowl $1.6 million, the third $1.3 million and the fourth and fifth $1.1 million. “We just take all our bowl money, put it together, and we distribute it fairly,” said associate commissioner Nick Carparelli, adding that the league wants to make sure schools can cover their expenses.

  113. Garret May 9, 2009 12:20 pm

If I remember correctly, making a BCS bowl game for Texas gives them an additional $2 million or so, so the Big 12 splits the money less equally. Of course a WAC team making a BCS game gets an additional $4.5 million or so as a reward. So, the answer to your question is that it depends on the conference, but no team takes home the whole $17 million or so the BCS bowl pays for each team.

    Garret:

Appreciate your lenghty explanation for “bowl” pay-outs.

If I digest your WAC dissertation, the conference keeps half to divide equally amongst all the members and the school playing in the BCS bowl gets another $4-5 mil.

Does anyone know how much UH actually received from the WAC’s share (split amongst all teams) and how much they got for playing in the Sugar Bowl? I recall some mention of about $4.5 mil directly to UH.

Accepting Garret’s explanation, if each team/conference gets $14,000,000 but the WAC receives only $9-10 mil, where did the other $4 – $5 mil go and why? Did it go the Sugar Bowl committee to cover expenses for the next year? Did the WAC keep it to cover expenses?

BTW, how does the WAC generate income to operate the conference, pay Benson and his stooges for all their bennies, office expenses, etc? I would find it difficult to accept that all teams pay and “equal share” to fund the WAC as the bottom teams don’t have the funds to pay an equal share. That being the case, any bowl money should be distributed using the same formula. This may be an incentive for the bottom teams to really improve to “share in the wealth”.

Again, with so many teams from BCS conferences going to bowl games, the rich get richer and the non-BCS conferences suck wind!! Therefore, if a “play-off” system were to be implimented and conferences are limited to the number of schools in bowl games, the “wealth” from all the bowl games can be thrown into a single pot and divided equally amongst all the conferences. The conference can then impliment its own system to distribute the booty.

Accepting Garret’s explanation, if each team/conference gets $14,000,000 but the WAC receives only $9-10 mil, where did the other $4 – $5 mil go and why?

The other $5 million or so that the WAC didn’t get was split amongst the other non-BCS conferences.

The four remaining non-BCS conferences split the final $5 million or so using some type of strength-of-conference formula, so in terms of how much each conference got from UH’s BCS berth, the Mountain West likely got more than Conference USA, the MAC, and the Sun Belt. I think I read somewhere that San Diego State netted ~ $150,000 (or something like that) alone on UH’s BCS berth.

I agree with your assessment about the rich getting richer, A-House. Given the trends we’ve seen in the college football landscape recently implemented by BCS teams (Million dollar assistant coaches? You gotta be kidding me!), I feel we’re slowly being pushed towards a two-class college football atmosphere in Division I-A. If we aren’t already there, the wheels are certainly in motion, with the BCS powers being the catalyst for this increased disparity.

Pushing through change within the college football system is difficult. The BCS powers are entrenched and don’t want to give up any power (or $$$). I’m of the impression that it would take an act of Congress to change it, but nowadays they have other more important things to focus on.

  148. Ralph May 9, 2009 3:05 pm

Mark Presho is an assistant coach at UC Irvine

  149. Ralph May 9, 2009 3:06 pm

    is Reid Sunahara applying?

  150. Garret May 9, 2009 3:20 pm

    A-House,

The exact payout that UH got from the Sugar Bowl was: $4,385,555. Looking up stuff like that easily is one of the benefits of my blog. Like CRW says, the difference between the Sugar Bowl payout and the money the WAC got was the money that went to the other non-BCS conferences. CRW is also correct when he said that San Diego State got about $150k from that Sugar Bowl money (I remember posting that article). Each WAC team got a similar amount of money from Utah’s trips to BCS bowls.

From everything I’ve read, each team *does* pay an equal share for their WAC dues. However, each team gets the same amount of money from the NCAA basketball money and the ESPN TV money–no matter what school actually earned the money for the conference, it is split evenly among all conference schools. The financial incentives you are hoping for are sadly not there…UH even *loses* money when it goes to the Hawaii Bowl! When BSU chose to play in the Poinsettia Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl instead of their home bowl, it lost a lot of money for the conference (lower Humanitarian Bowl attendance revenue)…and UH shared equally in those losses with the rest of the WAC schools.

I like the way the Big 12 splits up their TV money–TV appearances give a big bonus to the schools, so there is a big financial incentive for teams to do well enough for TV to want to show them. ESPN loves UH and BSU, but UH and BSU get the same amount of money from TV that Utah State and Idaho get! Old contracts did have some financial incentive for schools that moved home games away from Saturday (kind of like an “inconvenience fee”), but I’m not sure that the current deal has that. I’m hoping that there isn’t the same deal now because UH is playing off-Saturday road games and BSU vetoed a Friday game at Aloha Stadium.

  151. Ralph May 9, 2009 3:25 pm

    irvine is the national champs…

  152. Ralph May 9, 2009 3:28 pm

    great match 🙂

  155. djmitcho (iPhone) May 9, 2009 3:47 pm

Hope everyone has a good time at the KK. I’m at the Shock game and will be posting the game scores throughout the game. You can follow the score at http://www.twitter.com/mitchopalooza. Or click on my name. Will let you know if Hercules Satele plays tonight.

  156. djmitcho (iPhone) May 9, 2009 3:54 pm

Satele is not playing tonight. That sucks

  157. Ralph May 9, 2009 4:03 pm

we haven’t any OL player make an NFL team in the last 2 years….can’t think of any FA offers….maybe Hercules at Arizona…FA or tryout?

  158. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:05 pm

Dang, Alexander is going to throw the game…literally and figuratively! 👿

  159. Ralph May 9, 2009 4:06 pm

    is there a score?

  160. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:11 pm

    5-4 Hawaii

Ryan Morford broke the homerun record with a two run HR in the 2nd! He’s tricky!

Sac State beat Nevada twice in doubleheader so now statistically ahead of Hawaii and they will be tied if Hawaii wins.

  161. Ralph May 9, 2009 4:13 pm

not good news regarding sac st…they were in last place…tied for last place, ugh!

  162. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:13 pm

    Top of the fifth, Ralph.

Vinnie has another RBI double off the wall centerfield.

Bows have 5 doubles and HR in this game.

  163. madeinhawaii May 9, 2009 4:15 pm

hmm.. no game tracker on the second game?

  164. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:28 pm

I know…mih. So at least I am able to listen on my digital cable…channel 884.

  165. brew808 May 9, 2009 4:30 pm

MIH, rob25 – Gametracker from ‘dawgs site available. Click on my name for URL. 😀

  166. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:30 pm

Hawaii is ahead 9-4 bottom of the fifth…but not a safe lead by any means!!

    GO BOWS!! BEAT TE BULLDOGS!!

  167. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:31 pm

    Sorry 😳

    GO BOWS!! BEAT THE BULLDOGS!!

  168. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:33 pm

Thanks Brew, but for the first three to four innings it was stuck on the first game stats.

You sure you aren’t coming to the KK?? 😉

  169. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:42 pm

Interesting how Sac State has taken three straight from Nevada and San Jose State took three straight from NMSU.

Good job on the double play…Kramer comes in to do his job!

  170. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:43 pm

**I doubt that I could beat Liz’s record for consecutive unbroken posts!!**

  171. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:44 pm

Don’t I have something to do tonight?

  172. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 4:45 pm

Will be interesting to see the updated WAC standings after the conclusion of this game.

  173. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:45 pm

Good luck to uhfan808’s son in the State judo tourney today!

  174. Rob25 May 9, 2009 4:47 pm

CRW – Yes it will, but we will still have to wait until next weekend is through to see how it all shakes out.

Good thing that I have my WAC tourney tickets already!

I’m ready for Blake and Devon…or at least listening to Stretch have “conversations” with them! 😯 🙄 😯

  175. LizKauai (iPhone) May 9, 2009 4:50 pm

Help! I got stopped at TSA because of the POI. We are landing at 7:20 ish now. I need to let curveball know as he was picking me up and I cannot find his number. e

  176. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:06 pm

    11-5 ‘Bows, Top 7.

Keep in mind the second game is a 7-inning match.

  177. LizKauai (iPhone) May 9, 2009 5:09 pm

All is good. Tsai-ko wireless works great! See you latahs. WITH POI. Dagnabbit!

  178. A-House May 9, 2009 5:11 pm

    Garret & CRW:

Mahalos for your very insightful explanations into how the “bowl” $$$ are divided amongst all the football teams across the country.

I’m sure it does help the smaller schools that have NO chance in going to a bowl game.

Perhaps the day will come when the WAC can send 5-7 schools every year to a bowl game increasing the “coffers” for each school in the conference.

  179. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:18 pm

Updated WAC Standings, assuming the ‘Bows hang on to beat Fresno:

    Team………………………..Record……Pct…..Home…..Away…..Streak
    San Jose State………….11-6……….647……6-2 …….5-4……..W4
    Louisiana Tech………….11-9……….550……5-3……..6-6……..W6
    Nevada………………………9-9………..500……4-6……..5-3………L5
    New Mexico State………9-10………474……5-6……..4-4………L3
    Sacramento State………8-9………..471……3-3……..5-6……..W3
    Hawai‘i……………………..11-12……..455……6-6……..4-6……..W2
    Fresno State………………8-12……..421…….6-5……..2-6……..L2

  180. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:20 pm

Aiyah, I forgot to update the percentages. Let me try again:

    Team………………………..Record……Pct…..Home…..Away…..Streak
    San Jose State………….11-6……….647……6-2 …….5-4……..W4
    Louisiana Tech………….11-9………550……5-3……..6-6……..W6
    Nevada………………………9-9……….500……4-6……..5-3………L5
    Hawai‘i……………………..11-12…….478……6-6……..4-6……..W2
    New Mexico State………9-10………474……5-6……..4-4………L3
    Sacramento State………8-9……….471……3-3……..5-6……..W3
    Fresno State………………8-12……..400…….6-5……..2-6……..L2

  181. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:23 pm

It’s all percentages separating 2nd through 7th in the WAC Standings.

    14-5 ‘Bows, still Top 7.

  182. madeinhawaii May 9, 2009 5:23 pm

    whoa… 15 – 5 Bows still top of the 7th.

  183. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:23 pm

    Now 15-5 ‘Bows.

  184. madeinhawaii May 9, 2009 5:33 pm

Bows gotta close it out now… three outs away from another road win and two in a row towards a come back.

  185. curveball May 9, 2009 5:37 pm

    Yeah go Bows……………….

  186. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:37 pm

    Winnah winnah chicken dinnah.

    15-6 Bows.

  187. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2009 5:46 pm

That was key because the percentages don’t mean as much as the number of losses. As Skip Carey used to say — over and over and over — you can’t make up a loss. (He also used to identify players by only their first name, too, which was sorta sorta irritating.)

  188. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 5:56 pm

If I did the number crunching correctly with the WAC Baseball situation, I think the doubleheader sweep by the ‘Bows have secured them a berth in the WAC Tournament.

  189. madeinhawaii May 9, 2009 6:06 pm

I think Nevada has to win a game against Sacramento for UH to cinch a spot.

  190. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2009 6:12 pm

    Men’s VB:
They’re gonna probably narrow it down to maybe six, if all by telephone, four or five if we’re talking visits.
If I had a guess, the finalists would be: Tino, Presho, Wade, Wong, maybe Sealy.
Ronald Larsen got the UC Riverside job, so he’s out.
Everybody loves John Speraw, but he didn’t apply. Besides, UC Irvine is building him a house on campus.
Interesting thing is that three players met with the AD a couple of weeks ago. They made recommendations about the qualities they seek in the next coach, but, I don’t believe, they mentioned specific names. I only know this because I was standing in hallway when one of the players requested a meeting.

  191. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2009 6:16 pm

    Yep, CRW is correct again.
    Rainbows clinch WAC tourney spot.

  192. LizKauai (iPhone) May 9, 2009 6:23 pm

    Yea Bows!

    Thanks for the VB update.

  193. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 6:25 pm

    Thanks for the confirmation, ST.

Everyone who bought WAC Tournament tickets can now take a deep breath now knowing the ‘Bows will be there.

  194. wafan May 9, 2009 6:27 pm

    Yay, BaseBows!

    Keep it up!!!

  195. wafan May 9, 2009 6:28 pm

    Liz . . .

Still in Lihue or in HNL?

  196. wafan May 9, 2009 6:29 pm

Funny about the poi. Were they afraid it was going to pop and make the inside of the plane sticky?

  197. wafan May 9, 2009 6:29 pm

Or, were the TSA clowns going to confiscate it and eat it themselves?

  198. wafan May 9, 2009 6:30 pm

The WAC’d tournament should be a good one if the BaseBows are peaking.

  199. wafan May 9, 2009 6:30 pm

I am not pulling a Liz!

  200. wafan May 9, 2009 6:30 pm

    But 200!

  201. wafan May 9, 2009 6:31 pm

    Whoo-hoo!!!

Dang. Have to play by myself.

Wait. Let me rephrase that . . .

    Where is everyone?

  202. wafan May 9, 2009 6:32 pm

Dinner was at the Chinese Super Buffet. Yum.

  203. wafan May 9, 2009 6:32 pm

  204. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 6:33 pm

Looking forward to photos from Frank’s KK!!!

  209. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 6:40 pm

    No kidding, wafan.

Gets weird talking to yourself after a while.

  210. Committed Road Warrior May 9, 2009 6:41 pm

I’m outta here for a little bit.

    Whoooooosh!!!!!!

  211. madeinhawaii May 9, 2009 6:42 pm

With the Bows coming home on a tear and wanting to make up for all their previous losses — especially those in late innings, this tournament should be exciting to watch. The Bows will be entering the tournament with renewed vigor and higher expectations. It’s the edge they will need to take the tournament.

  212. LizKauai (iPhone) May 9, 2009 6:48 pm

Wafan. Loaded up and ready fly!

  213. L10pc May 9, 2009 6:56 pm

The Four Corners is a famous and popular tourist spot because it is supposed to be where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet (the only place in the US where 4 state boundaries come together)…unfortunately, the current monument is actually 2.5 miles west of where it should be and all of those tens of thousands of tourists and millions spent on the monument were at the wrong spot.

Bad news — the BaseBows kicked themselves out of an at-large berth with the recent slump.

Good news — that was a bit of an unlikely scenario anyway I guess, and the BaseBows can at least still get to regionals by winning the WAC tourney at home. There won’t be a “host college isn’t playing situation” this time around (thanks to Committed Road Warrior and ST for doing the math for us). And the BaseBows picked a good time to break out of that slump.

  222. chawan_cut May 9, 2009 9:41 pm

    garret,
dangit, so you’re telling me my butt wasn’t on the real 4 corners?!?!?
too bad, i’m going to tell everyone it was!
    heh.

  223. chawan_cut May 9, 2009 9:46 pm

    CRW,
do we clinch a berth because we are short a game due to the crappy weather at nevada? everyone else has 4 games left. we have a 11-12 record. how do we clinch?

    Tiger is Houdini.
Just when you think you have seen it all from the world’s best golfer….Tiger Woods continues to amaze.
Today was not his best day dispite stiching together 5 birdies, Woods added 3 bogeys.

His birdie on the Par 4, 6th, ran 47’10” from one end of the green to another and took several routes to get there.
    Just a regular spectacular shot.

His most incredible feat, however, was a bogey on the 11th.
Even then, it was simply incredible because it invloved a series of 4 consecutive shots with a mirror.

Tiger teed-off the 558 yard, Par-5,11th, hooking his ball 283 yards wide-left over the rough and into the native trees.
His ball came to rest against a tree and tightly nudged-up against the right-side of its trunk.
Woods calmly, took out an iron, spun it around, and hit as a lefty, driving it 112 y to the right intermediate rough where a big oak tree blocked any straight approach to the green.
So, he hit it trying a cut-shot around the tree over the water hazards and fell short just left.
His ball traveled 173 y to the left rough 37 yards from the hole.
His lye was horrible and the ball couldnt be seen in the thick grass.
He miraculousily powered the ball 42 yards to the green but the sun had tried its surface and the ball raced by the flag to the edge of the green and trickled down a slope and into a drain, below the green and 18′ from the hole.
So, with wedge, he pitches to within 8″ and taps in for a most remarkable bogey.
In all, Tiger made 4 incredible shots involving improvisation with his club, switched to lefty, made a cut-shot around a tree, powered out of thick-grass on a slope where his ball was not visible and pitched a shot from a drain below the green to within 8″ of the hole….yikes!!

  230. A-House May 9, 2009 11:22 pm

Good Evening Tsaikos still awake –

Mrs. A-House reporting in…just left a still-rockin’ KK for Frank 25…and what a rip-roaring good time is going on until they close down the place.

    – First, we bid a fond farewell to Ku’uleialoha Patton. Attended a beautiful memorial Celebration of Life at Palama Settlement hall. Pomai sends his love to all Tsaikos for their loving thoughts and prayers.

    – SJMacro – You are one of our precious Tsaiko jewels. Photodocumenting Ku’uleialoha’s service for Pomai is a beautiful gift of love.

    – Now for some funny observations…

    – Frank25 – It was a pleasure to finally meet you, hug you, give you a lil’ kiss, too. Please excuse me if I seemed to hover around you more than I should have, and also find excuses to hug you more times than I should have. Perhaps it was that oh-so good smelling cologne your wife bought you. You’re good looking, but when you smell good too…that takes you over the top! Welcome home!…and enjoy your brief respite with family and friends.

    – Rob25 – You’re “one in a million” indeed. Thanks for coordinating a really fun evening.

    – Stretch – What is it about you that brings Tsaikos to their feet, cheering you on like some kind of celebrity every time you enter the room…not only the first time, but the second and third. Rumor is he wants to run for public office.

    – Mr. C – Thanks for watching the “mens” restroom door as I did my business in a mad rush in the “mens” restroom. Hey…only get one toilet and every wahine knows takes three times as long for a kane to go then one wahine. Just don’t flash your badge at me again. I promise to keep these “incidents” to a minimum. No forget now…secret phrase…”meet at Ritchie’s”…LOL

    – Hawaiian Bod – So happy to finally meet you…and equally happy that you finally got your prize from last football season. Mahalo for signing my book.

    – J – Hope you got some nice pics of ST with his cake. Your camera equipment looks so “professional”, I thought you were one of the HA’s photographs paid to cover ST’s big celebration…

    – Mrs. Kekoa – You looked stunning this evening. I could feel your power and well-being returning to normal, and that made me very, very happy. Continue to take good care until all is well again.

    – A-House – I tried to dance with you as Pride sang “One in a Million” for Frank 25 and Rob25, but you didn’t hug me back, so that’s why I went up to “group hug” dance with the star couple. It’s fun to stuff $$ down the front of a lovely wahine…even though I’m also a wahine.

    – Koa Mahu – I felt your presence at the KK tonight. I know you are about ready to “come out of the closet” very, very soon. Girl/guy/it…just do it!

    – ST – And finally, a genuine heart-felt congratulatory hug (( )) to you, ST. You are the one and only #1 journalist in A-House ohana’s opinion. It is not right to lump columnists and sports writers/editors in one category of “journalist”. Congratulations to Lee Cataluna for winning first place this year, but next year, let’s not mix apples and oranges.

Good Night Everybody…A-House, Midori7 and I had a fun evening with special friends…

    BowsForever:
I don’t think the ‘Bows have been knocked out of an at-large berth……….yet. I do think they’re still on the fringe, though, and will be more closely scrutinized by the selection committee once the automatic berths have been filled.

With the Fresno series accounted for, Warren Nolan has the ‘Bows RPI at 33. Not bad, but I think we’ll be competing with Texas State and College of Charleston for one of the last at-large bids. I think the ‘Bows will have to go deep into the WAC Tournament to make their resume more appealing for an at-large.

Of course, all this assumes we take care of business against a bad Utah Valley team. Split/lose that series and I think our chances for an at-large will definitely be gone by then, regardless of how far they get in the WAC Tournament.

Win the WAC Tournament and this at-large talk is all for not.

  233. Committed Road Warrior May 10, 2009 12:22 am

    chawan_cut:
I don’t know what ST’s rationale is, but I have the ‘Bows clinching a berth in the WAC Tournament based on the Fresno @ Sacramento series next weekend. Currently in the WAC, Fresno is in last place and Sacramento is second-to-last.

Regardless of how that series shapes up, whether one team sweeps/takes 3 of 4 or they both split the series, one of the two will have a worse conference record than UH, and thus a worse conference winning %.

The actual number of scenarios are endless, and the number crunching I’ve done so far shows one of three teams staying home: Fresno, Sacramento, or NMSU.

Rest assured the ‘Bows are in the WAC Tournament. As for seeding, we’ll have to wait until next weekend to determine that.
