Kekoa reports the tragic news:

Very sad news from Pomai this morning.  Mrs. Pomai expired suddenly of a brain aneurysm soon after flying in to Hawaii last Saturday to attend a family funeral. The family decided to keep her on a ventilator because she was an organ donor.
He does invite all who knew or met her at New Orleans during the Sugar Bowl to attend her Memorial services.  Those services are pending, and will be conducted at “Word of Life” church with Pastor Joe Onosai presiding.  The family is also planning to have her ashes scattered off Queen’s beach.

If you were to sum up your careers at UH with one word what would it be?

Stephen, Any idea which 4 WRs have earned “starting points” going into fall?

  4. Stephen Tsai April 28, 2009 9:05 am

No official word, but it’s safe to say that three of them are Lane, Salas and Pilares. The fourth is either Bradley, Medeiros or Blount. If Medeiros or Blount is No. 1, then Salas is a wideout. If it’s Bradley, then Salas is a slot.

does anybody feel the same as me about lane? I don’t think he should even start, he’s too soft and not close to being a complete receiver…..all he is capable of is stretching the field and when he does, he doesn’t even catch majority of the balls…….don’t know, but with all this depth i think his job is in jeopardy

  42. Jack Flash April 28, 2009 10:49 am

Kazz- that’s a RAJAH! See ya

  43. Kazz April 28, 2009 10:51 am

    Tanisha and Courtney,

If you two had the opportunity to act as recruiters for the UH Softball Program, what reasons would you give to potential recruits to choose UH based on your experiences?

  44. Buffoman April 28, 2009 10:57 am

Maui Warrior. I agree. He reminds me of one Walter Murray. Could run and stretch a field, but boy did he drop a ton of important passes. There’s that one in the end zone against BYU that just sticks.

Lane celebrates a lot when catching a ball should be what he does.

  45. Kazz April 28, 2009 10:57 am

Many people came away with good impressions of starting WRs.

I thought Ron Lee and Coach Mack had an idea to platoon as many as EIGHT receivers on a regular basis with ONE QB.

If that is still a possibility I can see: Bradley, Salas, Pilares, and Lane as the “first” unit and Stutzmann, Henry, Blount, and J. Taylor as the “second”. Potential wildcards remain in Royce Pollard and Jon Medeiros. However, at this time I am not too sure about Tinoco, Matt Kiel, and Daniel Lofton.

Of course all eight could be mixed and whatnot, but we have some depth at WR this season and DARE I say more than 2007… In 2007 we had a SOLID four, but then the drop-off behind them was significant as evident last season. This year, we have three “starters” in Salas, Pilares, and Lane, but we’ve seen the capabilities of J. Taylor, Bradley, Stutzmann, Blount, Henry, etc…

It’s a decision I wouldn’t want to have as a coach, but a situation I am MORE than happy with as a fan.

  46. Kazz April 28, 2009 11:01 am

    RE: Malcolm Lane.

What else can I say that hasn’t been said today. Many people feel this way as do I. He is an excellent kick returner though, but a lot of times last season his errors and left little to the imagination.

He does know the routes and has already played in the system which gives him some “nods” to start again this season, but guys like Royce Pollard and BR Stutzmann are breathing down his neck and this better make Lane a more effective WR during game time.

  47. Kekoa April 28, 2009 11:04 am

    Tanisha & Courtney

    1. Are their any UH softball camps planned to help recruit more of our local players?

    2. Are there any good pitchers that are being heavily recruited, and what are our chances of getting them?

Pomai – my condolences to you and your ohana

  49. protector April 28, 2009 11:12 am

My heartfelt condolences, thoughts & prayers go out to Pomai & family at this time. Incidentally, I agree with “mauiwarrior” & “Buffoman” re: Lane. I think though, that with the competition heating up, it will push him in a good way to play at a high level. I agree that his hands often don’t match up to the quality of his speed, but we’ve all seen flashes of brilliance. I’m hoping he plays up to his potential. As for the rest of the receivers, methinks that the USC defense, as storied as it is, will be mightily tested by these guys in 2010, provided of course that the protections & the QB are up to scratch.

  50. madeinhawaii April 28, 2009 11:15 am

Congrats to Corey Paclebar for making the training camp… That’s a motivational story and one that will hopefully light a fire under the seats of the other, more senior, receivers. Paclebar for his size can only compete for Slot… so will that mean Salas will be given more reps as WR in training camp?

Last year we didn’t know who our QB would really be. Well, kinda, sort of.. doubtful mostly, and wondering what happened to Graunke. We weren’t really certain if we had enough receivers to go around and if our RBs would be able to contribute. We had doubts regarding our O-line the way they were decimated during the Sugar Bowl. The only thing we felt comfortable about was our Defense.

What a flip-flop world college football is, eh?

It is a blessing to have much to fall back on. I don’t doubt that the coaching staff will know when to pull the plug on ANY player that is not performing well.

During the last three practices of the spring I noticed that Ron Lee was working a lot closer with the receivers than he did last season. An offensive coordinator should know his “ammo” inside and out.

  56. Jason April 28, 2009 11:26 am

Lane’s a senior, so hopefully the light turns on and he steps up. He showed some fire last year when there were rumors of him being challenged.

I really like the depth we have, so I can see any number of guys starting. I know Ron Lee wanted to platoon last year, but even the starters were very raw, let alone the backups. At wideout, I like the idea of platooning Bradley, Taylor, Pollard, and Lane. At slot, we have Salas, Medeiros, Blount, and Pilares, not to mention others who could also challenge for some playing time. Billy Ray I like so much, I think he has to redshirt; I want him bigger, stronger, and faster for four full years. And Lofton showed some flashes last Saturday at UH; maybe he’s finally reaching his potential.

  57. roysan16 April 28, 2009 11:27 am

    Pomai,

The loss of your wife saddens me because I know exactly the emptiness you’re feeling. And I want to express a few comforting words during your time of grief. These are the type of exchanges that nobody ever relishes,.But it does bespeak of the ones that care. And having been there, I can say it does mean a lot.

It brings tears to my eyes, sobs of tears because your were one of the first to express condolences at my loss. And that was only last summer. But it was the praiseworthiness in your message and in your words that impacted me in a comforting way. That is something I’ll always treasure-your words, your message and your concern on the worst day of my life, too.

Pardon the regressions. But there’s a certain bond I feel with you. And I’m taking this liberty as I continue writing. And I want you to know this. For you’re a person I genuinely have had the utmost respect for. Maybe it goes back to the days we tried to get the other site going. I would like to think so.

Today’s news saddens me greatly and I join with the others in expressing our condolences. I pray for your wife’s passage, and for you Pomai.

Wha??? Travis Laboy got cut…what da heo? Das okay he was injury ridden all last year and the Cards drafted two hybrid guys in the draft so I can see why they cut him. Oh well 7.5 million garrans babbarans and a chance to get healthy and redeem himself somewhere else is fine with me. I bet he’ll be signed somewhere soon, but like all our boys, hope he stays healthy!

  95. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 2:59 pm

Same with Pisa Tinoisamoa on the Rams, hope he has healed up and can redeem himself this year. Reminds of Blaze though, guys who play so intense and reckless that injuries get the best of them…auwe!

  96. kama krab April 28, 2009 3:00 pm

The cards made two big arse mistakes today cutting Edge and Laboy. Laboy once healthy again is going to be an animal and Edge still has a few more good years ahead of him. I predict the Cards to have another losing season anyways after some of the moves they made this off-season and more moves to come.

Glad to see you back. Take care and recover slowly. Its been almost 12 years since my stroke.

  98. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 3:09 pm

    kama krab,

I’m with you on that…eventhough they made the moves for the incoming draft picks and money purposes I still think they lose money. I mean I would’ve kept Edge to mentor and help out Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower plus carry the load lil bit until they up to speed. Then with Travis Laboy, why invest that much money and then let him go. He is one of the better hybrid DE/LB guys in the NFL. I not too worried about him cause somebody going pick him up quick.

  99. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 3:15 pm

Um, how come our boys getting into trouble again? Just heard Bryce Kalauokaaea ackin dumb making huhu with his girlfriend. Sheesh, what the frikk going on with these boys? Oh well, guess we not going see him in one Warrior uniform anymore…dummeh!!!

  100. Jason April 28, 2009 3:19 pm

    Didn’t Edge request a release?

  101. kama krab April 28, 2009 3:21 pm

Yah read about Bryce to. What the heck he thinking. Braddah you gotta go get some help. You get one baby coming. NO CAN BE ACKING STUPID LIKE THAT. Prayers for you to get your life straighten out.

    Florida Ted,

Great too see you on the blog. Life is precious. Live well.

  103. madeinhawaii April 28, 2009 3:26 pm

    kama krab,

My thoughts exactly. Got to seek help. Violence and threats of violence simply isn’t the way. Just not pono.

  104. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 3:30 pm

    Jason,
You might be right about Edge… Anyway I guess that makes Beanie Wells a rookie RB to look for in Fantasy Football huh??? So what, you guys like make one league this year for Fantasy Football when start???

  105. kama krab April 28, 2009 3:35 pm

In regards to the Cards next year, it’s going to be Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald and nobody else. Anquan (sp?) is the next one out the door. It’s gonna first to worse for them. It will be the rise of the Niner’s next year.

  106. Jason April 28, 2009 3:48 pm

    Rise of the 49ers! 🙂

And of course, we’ll have a league for fantasy football. We always do! 🙂

  107. Ralph April 28, 2009 3:53 pm

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Mrs. Pomai’s generosity and love for others is evidenced by her willingness to help others in their time of need through the donation of her organs.

In time you should take a few moments to tell them about Mrs. Pomai and how she continues to live and flourish not only in your heart but in your memories.

Prayers and thoughts for you and your family, and much gratitude to Mrs. Pomai for thinking of others.

  116. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 4:39 pm

The Black and Silver need help, no wait a miracle, no wait…get rid of Al Davis!!!

  117. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 4:42 pm

I thought Kurt Warner was planning to retire if Anquan Boldin doesn’t stay with the Cards??? If that happens, it’ll probably be another lifetime before we see Arizona reach the Superbowl again…

  118. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 4:52 pm

49ers on the rise…hmm…maybe if they traded for some #5 guy on the Redskins? Shaun Hill, Alex Smith, Damon Huard, and Nate Davis as the QB’s doesn’t excite me too much. Lucky they got Crabtree though cause if they could get a half-way decent QB they have some weapons in the arsenal. Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, and even ancient Isaac Bruce could be somewhat lethal… I mean shoot they even added that Fresno Puppy Bear Pascoe…

  119. Momo April 28, 2009 4:56 pm

Our prayers to the Pomai Ohana.

Good to see so many bows getting there shot in the arm and hope them the best at this level.

  120. Jason April 28, 2009 5:17 pm

The Nate Davis pick was interesting. We’ll have to see if he can overcome his learning disability. And I loved the Bear Pascoe pick. He’ll add some physicality to the TE position that we don’t have with Davis and Delanie Walker. But yeah, Alex Smith or Shaun Hill …

  121. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 5:23 pm

    Wide Receivers…

If Salas, Lane, and Pilares are locks…I would go with Rodney Bradley and move Salas to slot with Pilares. I think it will give us a legit deep threat who will demand attention to his side and open up more of the underneath stuff to Salas and Pilares and let them wreak havoc. Regardless we so deep anyone of our receivers can do damage!

  122. 99club April 28, 2009 5:28 pm

    Pomai,

I’m deeply saddened to read about the passing of such a sweet person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

  123. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 5:30 pm

    Jason,

Slowly but surely the pieces for the 49ers are coming together. The defense is pretty good. Michael Crabtree could bring back the memories of Jerry Rice. Frank Gore is a Top 5 running back when healthy. Vernon Davis still hasn’t reached his potential yet. Isaac Bruce can still hold it down at his age. All that’s missing is a QB…I wonder if they were in the hunt for Jay Cutler??? Now that would be dangerous.

  125. Jason April 28, 2009 6:15 pm

Pauoa Boy: I like Bradley, and I would prefer him as the fourth starter, because I really like Salas at slot and I don’t remember having this much deep speed at the two wideout positions since Colbert and Lelie. Blount looks pretty darn good too, though, he’s got some Chad Owens in him. I think it comes down to two things: 1) Does Bradley have a good enough understanding of the offense, and is his route running polished enough? He’s a very raw receiver, and while he made some huge strides from the first practice to the last, he still has some work to do. 2) I think we see both Bradley and Blount in games, so I’m wondering how Salas feels about mid-game transitions back and forth between X and H. Because the reads are different, it does add more work for him in turns of game prep. If he can do it seamlessly, then that adds even more potential to this offense. He does seem to be a good football IQ guy …

Kazz: I see you are in the habit of ignoring my posts. See #110. 😉

  126. Bathroom Accessories April 28, 2009 7:17 pm

There are so many players haven’t been notified. So it’s safe to say that three of them are Lane, Salas and Pilares. The fourth is either Bradley, Medeiros or Blount. If Medeiros or Blount is No. 1, then Salas is a wide out. If it’s Bradley, then Salas is a slot. Does anybody feel the same like me.

    THOUGHTS: Pomai n Ohana!

  133. Pauoa Boy April 28, 2009 7:53 pm

    Jason,
For sure we’ll see alot more than just Bradley and Blount. I just think that Bradley will start with the other three. Nothing against Blount cause he can start just as well. But with only 4 receivers on the field at a time maybe we should put in a 5 receiver set here and there. Bradley will come around as far as route running and all that I’m not worried about him. I really think this offense will get used to its old ways and light up the scoreboard. We have so many weapons, defensive coordinators will be up all night and come game time will need a box a tissue from all the crying they’re going to do when they have no clue how to defend our attack!

  134. Jason April 28, 2009 8:01 pm

How about a five-wide ‘Noke? Can you imagine motioning Bradley, Lane, or Pilares like the Razorbacks motioned Felix Jones? Give him the ball with a full head of steam … 😀

When has there ever been a time where the coaches are getting headaches because we have too many #1’s to choose from. Soon there will be no more ESPN analyst retardation when talking about Warrior players, oh wait nevermind that would mean they’d have to fire Kiper, Jaworski, McShay, Herbstreit, etc…okay I take that back…

The NFL is thinking about making their draft take *3* days.

The NFL confirmed reports that the league is considering the idea of starting the 2010 draft in prime time on a Thursday night and making it a three-day event but added that no decision has been made.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the NFL was considering holding the first round of the draft on a Thursday night, the second and third rounds on a Friday night and rounds 4 through 7 on a Saturday.

  166. madeinhawaii April 28, 2009 9:35 pm

    Garret,

Your #153 just reminds us how every player on the Warrior team is a UH and Hawaii ambassador. The good they do reverberates throughout the islands and sometimes it even gets noticed beyond our shores. BUT, the wrongs they do echo far and abroad and become greatly magnified so that they darken our Island skies.

In addition to their penchant for violent outbursts against multiple species, Kalauokaaea and Davis are both suspended (essentially dismissed) pending a resolution to their cases, are both negligible to the Warriors’ plans this fall. So investigators can take their time.

What is this guy trying to imply about UH, McMackin’s program, and our Court system?

I’m done worrying about what the media covers in regards to incidents involving UH players.

Im sure there will be those that will disagree and will say we should be worried about this as it has been a constant and UH football has had the reputation of having “thugs” on the program.

Well what is worrying going to do about? I am a fan, a “booster” etc… am I going to give my free time to snoop and follow 100+ football players around making sure they don’t get into trouble? Am I going to lobby to make sure Coach Mack jumps on them? Seriously…

I’ll just spend my time cheering for those that are decent and good kids and those that have done horrible things will just fade into nothingness… that’s the choice they’ve made.

Aloha my fellow TSAIKOS, first on behalf of myself and my daughter I want to thank you all for the Aloha that has poured forth from you all. I also want to thank my beautiful Pua for sharing her life with me. When I arrived home on the dismal Sunday morning I had a very heavy heart but after visiting with Ku’uleialoha my sprite was lifted by the Aloha that came from her, and celebrated with her as she started her journey home to the Lord.

In the last couple of days as I looked back at her life I was truly amazed of what she had accomplished in her short time spent on earth and also the number of people she has touched in her life. She has brought great joy and comfort to so many people it’s mind boggling.

As our brother Kekoa has said we will be having a memorial service for her then scatter half of her ashes off Kuhio beach, then I will take the remaining ashes back to West Virginia where we will have another memorial service and then scatter the remaining ashes on the farm where we live.

And to Florida Ted, as I sat an read the comment you wrote tears where flowing, I am so honored and proud that her Aloha reached all the way to you and touched you to accomplish the portion of your journey back to us.

Again Aloha and Mahalo to you all.

This paper likes the draft pick for Veikune.

Round 2, No. 52, linebacker David Veikune, Hawaii. Veikune had as much success as a pass-rusher as some of the more highly touted types who will be converted from college defensive ends to pro OLBs, like Orakpo and Brown. Late in the second round is the right place to pick a player like that.

New accounts on Twitter, a burgeoning social networking service, have been started by Illinois coach Ron Zook, USC’s Pete Carroll, Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis and Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin, to name a few.

It might not be the same as texting a recruit directly, but Zook is clear about why he was willing to start on Twitter.

“The whole reason obviously had to do with recruiting, period,” he said. “I guess others have been able to follow us. It’s amazing what (students) have now and how they communicate, and guys are able to see what we’re doing.”

At least 18 Division I head coaches have Twitter accounts, and their audiences grow daily. Carroll has more than 12,000 following his posts, while Georgia’s Mark Richt, Washington’s Steve Sarkisian, Weis and Kiffin all have more than 2,000 followers.

Twitter does have a feature that allows for direct messages — viewable only by sender and recipient — to a person’s phone. Kearns was not aware of the NCAA’s stance on this option.

Zook is interested in the recruiting angle. Illinois made it a point to inform recruits that Zook had started an account, allowing them to follow his updates if wanted.

Duke coach David Cutcliffe announced on Twitter that his staff had talked to 56 recruits on the first day that phone calls were allowable.

From 5 to 10pm today, you can get scoops (up to 3) of ice cream for just 31 cents each–the money goes to honor America’s firefighters with a $100,000 donation to the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) National Junior Firefighter Program. I know that my family will do our part!

Dominos is offering a free “Pasta Bowl” today. This is pasta baked into a pizza crust. If you go to their website you’ll see a picture of it. Domino’s is giving away free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m today. Just stop by any of their participating locations and you can get a free carry-out order of their new Bread Bowl Pasta! Lori called and found out that the Dominos near our house is giving them out for free today.

Good morning All! Hope everyone has a good hump day.

    Garrett:
I’m still a little wary of Dominos. Did you ever see that youtube showing what goes on in those places?

  190. Garret April 29, 2009 6:09 am

    KapoleiWarrior,

I’ve seen that video…I even archived the YouTube article in my blog when it first came out. However, those guys were fired quickly and it was just one restaurant on the mainland. I’m guessing that there are a lot of other things going on at restaurants that I don’t want to know about either…with YouTube it is just easier for us to find out about it.

Anyway, it is free and a few blocks from my house so my wife and I have a (cheap) lunch date today! Dinner tonight will be chicken from El Pollo Loco that we picked up yesterday (also free), then dessert will be ice cream from BR. My wife loves that she doesn’t have to cook and we’re not spending money.

It was nice to get a chance to invent something at work yesterday…I got to do my own thing instead of researching what others do and came up with something new. I’m probably going to be off-blog all day trying to test this new thing…this could blow away everything else out there.

somehow most of us can relate to a student athlete in college and we all did somethings that were out of line, but you didn’t do things that were no no, like beating up your spouse or girlfriend, stealing, burglary, ripping off people, etc most of us knew where the fine line ends and there are still student athletes who don’t want to adhere to discipline and responsibility and they cross the fine line. for those kind of athletes, they should be suspended from athletics and not allowed to use the athletic facilities.

Chemistry-interface? Summer-cycle training periods? Sophmore records? Fusion of coaches? Template of experience?”

    Pride, havent forgot–just was busy–
So, per your request, I offer the following:

Training-cycles (approx. 8 weeks per cycle) can be broken down to in-season, post season to spring (JAN-MAR-usually an 8 week circuit) and summer-cycle to Camp (JUN-JULY–8 week circuit again).
These cycles are principally comprised of weight training and plyometrics, diet, agility drills, run-conditioning, position-techniques, 7 on 7 unsupervised and a garden variety of stuff put together by the trainer per coaching staff priorities.
Except for the seasonal cycle, the other two periods are under the direct supervision and responsibility of the football trainer. He is God.

    Chemistry-interface.
JJ always mentioned coach-player interaction as vital to having good team ‘chemistry’.

Dick Tomey often talks about chemistry between coach and player and is boasting about “chemistry” between his new QB coach, Terry Malley, and returning senior QB Kyle Reed.

Simply stated, it is the the interaction of coaching personality in combination with player response.
We will have two new coaches and a subsequent shift in responsibilities and duty–so this serves as a catalyst to forming new coach-player chemistry that will be interesting to observe over the next 16 weeks.

Fusion of coaches–Ron Lee with Gordie, Miano w Chris Tormey.
Mutual respect and ties between Coach Ron and Gordie, dunno about Tormey and Miano.

Template of experience, eg., Gordie Shaw’s Big Ten experience as an OL coach in a conference known to produce NFL-OLM and smash-mouth football.
Ditto with Chris Tormey as he brings a resume of experience with him as a head coach and as a seasoned assistant in the PAC 10.

Sophomore–MAC is headed into his 2nd year of coaching.
Pivotal, in terms of team and position organization.
MAC has a 5-year window to yield results from his recruiting efforts and hire. We are in year 2.

BTW, great article by Ferd on da Broncs, now u guyz know Im not a ‘Bosiefanny’ just showing respect for a great program that achieves by being efficient.

PS….Don’t forget, this is Tiger week @ Quail Hollow…

  221. warriorfanny2 April 29, 2009 8:48 am

here are my selections @ WR–
    Bradley-Taylor-Lane, wideouts, Salas-Pilares-Blount, slots.
    Others: Tinoco, Henry, Medeiros.

Stiil a lot of variables on the table–such as who reports to camp in primo condition, grasp of system and injury.
javonte and dustin bring instant field-speed and quickness, not just linear 40-speed.

Coach Ron constantly talks about field-speed or game-speed and the ability to move and react quickly to defenses under game conditions.

Bradley and Taylor have the ability to strech the field vertically, to open huge zones, under, for our slots to drop into.
If Bradley can catch deep, he will draw 2-coverage, further opening it up for our slots.
Blount is difficult to cover betw coverage and Salas has velcro hands as the go-to-guy.
Kealoha Pilares is a wild-card and could have a break-out-season, depending on whether Coach Lee allows him to focus on one position….it looks good for our receiving unit and no matter who starts–I would love to see rotation.
Too much talent here to sit.

  222. FloridaTed April 29, 2009 9:18 am

Fall-Camp should be really interesting, just to see who will emerge.

Last year we had the illusion of being two deep, which turned out to be a mirage, but this year we actually seem to have it. Let’s hope that last years mirage was just a reflexion of this years reality.

If the coaches can put this Orchestra together in the right way, 2009 might become a great symphony. 10 + wins is entirely possible.
