Midnight madness

imageYour parents weren’t entirely correct.

There are good things that happen in the wee hours, such as this morning’s annual midnight weightlifting session. The event served as both a Warrior-bonding experience and a conclusion to the offseason conditioning program.

Nose tackle Kiko Faalologo was this summer’s Hulk. He had four bench-press reps of 405 pounds. Now you know whom to call if you need help moving an appliance.

The players report on Tuesday. First practice is Wednesday.

Payments to university athletes on hold after U.S. court grants stay
    Published July 31, 2015FoxNews.com

A U.S. appeals court put on hold Friday a ruling that ordered the National Collegiate Athletic Association to permit universities to compensate student athletes as much as $5,000 a year, Reuters reported.

The order was issued Friday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. It places a lower court injunction on hold until the 9th Circuit issues its opinion in the case, according to the news agency.

Allowing student athletes to received a limited share of revenue has stirred controversy in the college sports world and among politicians.

President Obama said in March that compensation for college athletes would “ruin the sense of college sports” and create “bidding wars.”

Just hope all get through training camp…with no serious injuries.. n those that not play last year due to injuries… make it through this season injury free…42/72…13/26

This is so nice to see…from a marketing standpoint…a coach comes in with a goal n marketing plan for the players… n is selling it to his offensive unit…this is a FIRST IN A VERY LONG WHILE…PAST OFFENSIVE COORDINATORS HAD NO REALLY MARKETING PLAN TO WORK ON…it will work…the scoreboard will have a very many replays of TD’s…

UH …43…Colorado 13…after this win..only 6 more WINS to go… but it maybe possible they will exceed 7 wins….

The chagrined FJ… will not be a happy camper… CHOW WILL BE RETAINED..

  9. Inyoface July 31, 2015 11:53 am

Can’t wait to see the scoreboard light up again! I like how Bailey said the defense will have to adjust to the offense instead of the other way around.

Anyone know how good seats are in K section seats 4-6…like where is that in comparison to the 50 yard line?

  11. Bryson July 31, 2015 1:01 pm

Don’t know if anyone realized this but on the recruiting front it looks like Hawaii is in the top 2 for S/QB Bubba Bolden out of the ridiculously funded private school in Nevada…He is set to make his choice tomorrow

  12. Bryson July 31, 2015 1:02 pm

Re #5 all I know is Mililani vs Leilehua was like 48-18

The ruling you cite has nothing to do with Cost of Attendance payments. It only applies to payments for use of college athletes image and the original ruling in the O’Bannon case.

    7.

Would you or anyone else know if there is any possibility of still being able to purchase a game ticket for Wisconsin? I already purchased my ticket or myself and a friend but have another person that is thinking of going, although I am aware that the UH ticket office deadline has already passed.

  15. warriorsanddolphins July 31, 2015 1:52 pm

The players’ image case is expected to require that colleges pay athletes for use of their image. A few colleges have said they expect to pay $5,000 per athlete per year to get a waiver in advance to avoid problems with accidental use of images (Texas is one example). This whole stipend and payments to athletes has a sleezy taint to it. Saban, the Alabama coach complained that the University’s financial aid department was not computing its cost of attendance stipend high enough to allow Alabama to compete with other schools. As many predicted after Saban spoke out, Alabama has raised its Cost of Attendance by 34%.

  31. A-House August 1, 2015 8:32 am

    let’s see — 250 x $4,000 = $1,000,000

is this what UH must come up with to keep up with the “jonies” in attracting athletes?

someone at UH, including the BOR, and/or the legislature must wake up, smell the $$$, and decide how best to operate UH cause this “autonomy” tingy is not working!! let your egos go for the betterment of the school, students, and Hawaii

you will come and go, but UH-Manoa will remain long after you are gone – like Mr. Tam, history teacher at McKinley says, “HUMAN NATURE SUCKS” !!!!!!!!!!

GREED AND POWER will bring you down!!!

  32. A-House August 1, 2015 8:36 am

what? what’s dat u say?? everything is fine at UH? by whose standards???

why spend $1,000,000 to defend UH and selected personnel to cover the $200,000 lost in wonder blunder???

and UH decision to represent Amanda in the Gib’s problem may come back to haunt them as the General Counsel’s Office cannot not represent UH and Amanda should one or the other claims that the other was at fault to protect their own interests! — definite conflict of interest – very shallow thinking by a decision maker.

  33. A-House August 1, 2015 8:38 am

    tom-warriornation:

still waiting for Panda to send us our packets to see where our seats are — will let you know later

  34. A-House August 1, 2015 8:53 am

let’s see – if Bolden selects UH — what will the QB position look like in 2 years?

there is Zwahlen, McKenzie (if he does’t bolt like his WR teammate), the Colorado ST transfer — who am I missing? — a redshirt freshman, a true frosh, a redshirt sophomore — looks like a good succession plan

Bolden and McKenzie will both be true freshman

why all this chatter on Kansas St players transferring to UH? mere speculation? or, wishful thinking? will agree that UH needs to shore up the NT position and DT if they employ a 4 front alignment – – why not switch it up as part of the regular rotation to confuse the OL? let one OL appear to be a stand up MLB and move when the QB starts his count — use a semi-wide split to minimize movement by UH DL. why not have all the DL stand around as a group knowing exactly where they will go once the QB starts his call? or, all rush from a “standing position”?

what is the total number of offensive and defensive players in motion simultaneously?

  35. A-House August 1, 2015 8:59 am

COA is a NCAA driven action because of the Power5 conferences to attract better athletes

if so, then this extra cost should not be the entire burden of the athletic department – if UHAD decided to make an additional “cost/expense” move, then UHAD should shoulder the entire cost — makes sense to me!

however, with Lassner’s most recent statements – UHAD is on their own – as such, for accounting purposes/responsibility, upper campus should give/allocate XX parking structure income to UHAD — seems easy to me how to account for the additional income for sporting events
