Sullivan: Punahou's Makaula accepts UH offer

Doris Sullivan is the first to confirm that Punahou School’s Kimo Makaula has accepted a football scholarship from UH.
Makaula, a quarterback at Punahou, will compete at defensive end for the Warriors.  “I made my decision, and I’m very happy with it,” Makaula told The Advertiser. “I look forward to playing for Coach Mack.”

Central Arkansas and UH have reached an agreement to play each other in the 2009 football opener at Aloha Stadium.
“I’m happy to be playing our first game next year at home,” UH coach Greg McMackin said. “I know Jim (Donovan, UH’s athletic director) called a lot of teams, and Central Arkansas stepped up to the plate. They’re going to be a good team to open with. I have a lot of respect for their program.”

SALT LAKE CITY — Is it “road rage” if the outburst happens at the rental-car counter?
A woman went vocal, screaming that the rental company did her wrong. The employee backed the company’s side by pointing to a computer printout.
That’s when the woman yelled: “The computer is stupid!”
I’ll use that line the next time somebody grumbles about one of my stories.
I noticed that the “key” to my rental car does not have the metal thing that, uh, you know, is the “key” part of a key. I was then told that’s the new key, and you insert the part that says “panic” into the ignition.
Okeeee.

And, a few blocks from the hotel, is a Budweiser plant.
Welcome to Salt Lake City, site of the WAC Football Media Preview.

This afternoon, thanks to Dave Reardon, we watched Derrick Lowe play for the Dallas Mavericks’ entry in the Rocky Mountain Revue, a summer basketball league for NBA hopefuls and rookies. Lowe started, and hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the Mavericks’ 90-73 loss.

An early run of 200 UH football media guides will be distributed at the WAC Football Media Preview, which begins today in Salt Lake City.
The guides are made entirely of recycled paper — Go Green!
To save money, the full run will be limited to only a few thousand. That means that season-ticket holders, who used to receive the guides for free, will no longer be on the distribution list.
But a free online version will be available. And folks still may purchase the guides.
Also, to save moolah, UH is not mailing the guides to the WAC event. Instead, linebacker Adam Leonard, who will represent the Warriors, is being asked to take a box of media guides as check-in baggage.

Punter Tim Grasso appears to be a new man.
After spending the spring and first summer session in Utah, he is back in Hawai‘i. He lost 20 pounds, darkened his hair and is now pain-free.
He punted most of last year with a partially torn hamstring. He spent more than two months rehabbing the injury during the spring.
Yesterday, he punted for more than an hour, outlasting his punt returners.

Safety Vili Nauahi, who underwent successful elbow surgery during the offseason, declared himself to be physically fit. He resumed 7-on-7 drills yesterday.

Cornerback Ryan Mouton, who is expected to have a breakout season, is going to take a short break to attend his father’s birthday celebration in Katy, Texas.

Eight weeks ago, quarterback Brent Rausch arrived in town with Emo-black hair. Then he cut it short and went back to his natural sandy hue. But last week, he dyed his hair again. Rausch has been picking up the offense, and he is expected to challenge for playing time.

And belated congratulations to the parents and sisters of 2-week-old Aiden Humphreys. His mother, Tara, is the trainer for the UH volleyball teams.

    Cute guys, cute baby!

How’s the weather, ST? Rather windy here in Foster Village.

  6. TChahng [대장입니다] July 22, 2008 4:57 am

I’d like to get a hard copy of the media guide. If can, can… if no can… well then I’ll be happy with the digits (soft copy). Cover looks good with the big D monsters.

Wow, almost mid-night here in Seoul. “Esme” and Goodnight!

  7. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 5:04 am

haha Esme is famous even in Korea!

  8. brew808 July 22, 2008 5:05 am

    😯 🙄 😀 ~•~ Good Morning Tsaikos and Warrior Nation!!! ~•~ 😀 🙄 😯

Good to hear the guys have had time to heal and are reporting to camp in good condition and ready for battle! The team sounds solid with depth at all positions. I don’t think we could say that in past years. I think the only positions of some concern are Grasso and Kelly, and maybe Ingram – all key members of the special teams.

ST – Are you in SLC already? Have a great trip! Let’s not change the league and WAC press outlook for UH ….. yet! If they want to under-rate the team and it’s chances, then fine – we’ll surprise the HECK out of them come game time! IMHO.

Okay – everyone have a great day! 😀

  9. Stephen Tsai July 22, 2008 5:10 am

    I’m still in SFO.
    I don’t board for another 20 minutes.

  10. brew808 July 22, 2008 5:14 am

Okay – have a nice time in SLC. I suppose there’s no daughters to visit or deliver “care” packages to on this trip!

Don’t have too many green drinks or BBQ. And don’t forget your medicine! Ha! 😀

  11. myki July 22, 2008 5:19 am

Good morning Stephen, TChahng, Maverick, gigi, brew808 and all other early bird Tsai-kos. Have a safe trip Stephen. How soon will you be back?

What’s with the hang up about the resurfacing of “Cooke Field’? Any inside info?

  12. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 5:20 am

What’s this about meds? ST takes apple martinis! Now, I’m curious. What does it taste like? Apples?

  13. myki July 22, 2008 5:25 am

Stephen, most of us are going to be really disappointed without hard copies of the media guides! Are we going to be able to purchase them?

  14. Garret July 22, 2008 5:35 am

    ST,

Thank you for all of the updates! I love the photos and notes on each player…the season is getting so close!

  15. Garret July 22, 2008 5:37 am

Shout out to Liz for the awesome job she has been doing in finding and posting updates on Colt from the Washington papers! For some reason what she is posting doesn’t show up on my Google searches, so I wouldn’t be able to keep up with Colt without Liz and this blog!

  16. Garret July 22, 2008 5:39 am

Long Beach Press-Telegram has an article about Nielsen’s commitment to UH. Nice press in SoCal for UH! There are a lot of other potential recruits (and their parents) who will read this article in their paper.

Gahr High quarterback Corey Nielsen didn’t have to choose the University of Hawaii. He had scholarship offers from Arizona, Idaho and UNLV as well. And with a 4.0 GPA, Nielsen was giving a few Ivy League schools a look.

But after a trip to the UH Football Skills Camp last week, Nielsen knew he’d found the right place.

“(The run-and-shoot) is really similar to our offense at Gahr,” Nielsen said.

Hawaii’s offense works primarily out of the shotgun formation, which could help the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder deliver the ball before opposing linemen track him down.

“I’m not the typical 6-3, 6-4 quarterback,” Nielsen said.

  17. Garret July 22, 2008 5:55 am

Athlete from Hawaii is about to make his CFL starting debut.

For the record, it’s LOW-ben-dahn. You better learn it, because it looks like the Hawaii native is going to be playing smack dab in the middle of the Bomber defence for a while.

The bad news became official late yesterday afternoon: veteran middle linebacker Barrin Simpson is done for the year because of a torn pectoral muscle suffered in Friday’s 27-18 loss to B.C.

While he won’t have the same presence as Simpson, the middle linebacking job now turns to Lobendahn, a 25-year-old rookie from Honolulu who played at the University of Washington.

“I am ready. This is my chance,” Lobendahn said. “Too bad that Barrin Simpson got hurt. He’s a great player and has done a lot for this organization. I just gotta step in and play as well as him.”

Lobendahn’s father, Richard, just completed a two-week vacation, but he’s thinking about using some sick days to make the trip from Honolulu to Winnipeg for Thursday’s game.

“He’s going to try to make it up here,” Lobendahn said. “He’s very excited.”

  18. Garret July 22, 2008 5:59 am

Q&A with BYU’s head coach mentions how teams from the WAC and MWC that made it to BCS bowls had a leader at QB or RB.

RG: Of those teams, those non-BCS teams, who have made those runs, they’ve all had that guy who it all centers around, with Ian Johnson, Alex Smith and Colt Brennan. Does Max Hall have that quality?

BM: I think so. I wouldn’t ever compare him to those, but you need a great leader in a position that can make a difference. And those teams have had that. I think Max can do that.

  19. Garret July 22, 2008 6:03 am

I can’t remember if I mentioned this before–my parents and I had a stopover in Houston where we ate lunch at a food court while waiting for our flight to New Orleans. The table next to us had 4 quite large men, and they asked us if we were Warrior fans (all of us were wearing green UH shirts, which probably was why they noticed us). We got to talk with them for awhile about the season and the upcoming Sugar Bowl. At the end they mentioned that one of them would be playing for the Warriors this season…Vili Nauahi. He looks like he’s in even better shape than he was in late December when my family met him.

  20. d1shima July 22, 2008 6:04 am

    Garret,
Thanks for the news about Joe Lobendahn – another Crusader who’s representing!

  21. d1shima July 22, 2008 6:13 am

    Great Morning All.

    Forgot to greet everyone first.

Sheesh, my first time buying season tix and wat! no media guide!
Oh well, maybe I’ll check in wen Stephen gets back and wait for a CONTEST!!!

  22. myki July 22, 2008 6:13 am

Good morning Garret and d1! Doris was very appreciative of the ink cartridges!! We asked her if there was anything we could do to physically assist her ( since we have the time) She said the best way to assist her would be to keep our eyes and ears open for any info on kids with potential who are under the radar and get the info to her.

  23. d1shima July 22, 2008 6:16 am

Happy Birthday to Ryan Mouton’s Dad!

Congratulations to Aiden Humphreys’ folks. Goorookin’ baby!

Looks like more players are moving over to the clean-cut look.

  24. d1shima July 22, 2008 6:22 am

    Good morning myki.

Thanks for making the delivery. That Doris is somethin’ else, huh? What a treasure!

If you and SJ_macro are up in Manoa again this morning I hope it’s a little cooler for you folks.

  28. d1shima July 22, 2008 6:42 am

Stay dry everyone and have a great day!

    HiHo….

  29. FloridaTed July 22, 2008 6:44 am

    Goog morning, Tsai-Meister and Tsaiko-Nation.

Have a good trip to SLC.

Looks like all the little pieces are falling into place. Even though Funaki and Graunke have the inside track right now, I would not be shocked if one of the JC’s emerges as the starter, once the coaches get a hold of them in camp. It’s like a great, page turning mystey novel.

Is politics and bureaucracy rearing its ugly head over Ching field again? We have to fight this, or momentum could be stalled.

Have a great day everybody, got go to work, laterz.

  30. Loa July 22, 2008 6:45 am

d1 – homey called it “retro”, had some Ching Field info one other site

  31. djmitcho July 22, 2008 6:49 am

    Good Morning Tsaikoland

  32. Ronnie July 22, 2008 6:50 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation!

Here’s a quote from the Washington Redskins (http://theredskinsblog.com/2008/07/22/a-few-observations-from-morning-practice/) blog:

For all you Colt Brennan supporters out there (the ones who want him to make the team, not the ones who expect him to be the starter), he made some sharp throws to the RBs in the earlier drills — mostly short stuff, but one nicely placed longer throw to Rock Cartwright. I didn’t spot him during the 11-on-11s, though.

  33. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER July 22, 2008 7:00 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Thankx, Garrett!

Haha…Ronnie beat me to the punch with the Matt Teri blog post on Colt.
BTW… He was gracious enough to drop me an email and I invited him to join us here… so WELCOME MATT (get it?) if you drop by – please say HI!

    HiHo- early day today.

ST- awesome pix today- have fun in SLC!

    Go Yourselves.

    Go Warriors!!!

    Hi Liz! 😀

    Hi Matt! 😀

  37. Stretch July 22, 2008 7:14 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

d1 – hopefully WDoc can give us the answer to your Ching Field question

  38. bighilofan2 July 22, 2008 7:14 am

okay, after i posted i read what others had just posted, so i’m back on the box again.

UH Support Personnel (that be UH attorneys),
you got to help out Jim Donovan NOW! Don’t play like a DII school. Play hard ball. In hindsight, you messed up, thats all there is to it. The bottom line is you gave a guy the opportunity to cry foul and its holding us up. Always going get Daniel Smith who is gonna sue. Get him outta da way. Get the job going. Make him file injunction. Get the team fix going now. Life is not perfect. Play with the winged arm. If Blaze can do it, if Dan can do it, so can the team. That means U. Get a move on fixin the field this summer.

Say what you gotta say to get the field going. Lay all the #s down, written explanation why we gonna do it this way, and do it. NOW. Make rules for the next time. FIX IT NOW!!!! I don’t understand the precedence set when the foremost criteria is to FIX IT NOW. If you made a mistake, so what? If president Bush can get his guy to fly when the fly meant bustin da rules, then bust the rules.

If you mean GO WARRIORS, GO YOURSELVES.
C’mon guyz, back up Jimmy Donovan. For the team. Coach Mack needs the help. Jim needs the help. Our team needs the help. Step up. Be like
Mr. Hill in Pearl City. He stepped up. So can you!

    GO WARRIORS!

  39. myki July 22, 2008 7:16 am

d1 you must have fast fingers to get thru on the radio. Thanks for asking the question ‘cuz I’m curious too. Don’t recall hearing anything about it before.

  40. Kelli July 22, 2008 7:18 am

I told Derek it looks like the players on the cover are playing that pyramid thing — you know the one where you have layers of people on top of each other? Not that it’s a bad thing. It’s kinda cool. I guess I wasn’t the first to say that, though.

  41. Stretch July 22, 2008 7:20 am

BHF2 – can you explain what mistake was made and who is protesting the bid??

  42. bighilofan2 July 22, 2008 7:23 am

    sjmacro, myki1

howzit you 2. I’ll be lookin for you next Thurs and Fri at practice.

D-Low – Good luck, make the best decision for yourself whether you play in Australia, Europe, or find yourself on an NBA roster…

  47. bighilofan2 July 22, 2008 7:45 am

    1. D1shima, great posts last eve, all good.

    2. Stretch, I dunno da details, only what I read here, and da vibes i get from here. I not one geeneeus, but I do no deze truuts: a) no fix field this summa, b)all on hold til laters, c)sumbudy cry foul, d)get layahz involved, e)sue job re “process” and, f)get fingaz in da rong spotz, holdin back progress.

I say chop da finga(z) off, loosen up da backup, an let her ripp!!! 😆 😀

    GO WARRIORZ!

  48. Geezy July 22, 2008 7:45 am

hey guys, i been reading this blog everyday but prob. only posted once…Florida Ted, looking at past history we’ve got pretty beaten up trying to start a new quarterback for the first time…..Rolovich & TC in 2000, Brennan in 2005, i say we stick with either Graunke who has starter experience or a much improved Funaki who knows the O to the T…could be possible they would rotate….and use the back-ups to mop-up…..unless they’re really that good enough tp play…think they’ll need to grasp the O completely before getting out on that field

  49. Stretch July 22, 2008 7:47 am

Loa – thanks for the info.

  50. Kekoa July 22, 2008 7:55 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Villagers!

Stretch ~ Are you on island today? If not, see you at Sam’s this eve.

Koakane ~ You still on oxygen my friend? If not, meet me at the ball field this morning. We go watch practice and den pull EIS at the nearest sports bar at lunch time.

  51. Ronnie July 22, 2008 7:56 am

Pauoa Boy – no problem. I’m sorry it didn’t get answered…

  52. Maverick July 22, 2008 7:59 am

Geezy, your post about the experienced QB makes the most logical sense, especially when facing Florida.

Why wasn’t Weber St. our opener?

  53. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 8:03 am

Yes, I feel the same way. Graunke should start because he has game experience and threw for TDs.

  54. Esme July 22, 2008 8:07 am

    Hi, gang! Hi, ST!

TChahng and gigi, re: posts 6 & 7 … you guys are hilarious.

  55. Maverick July 22, 2008 8:08 am

What was it about JJ that preferred to open with top powerhouse teams?

I just don’t understand that philosophy.

  56. Kekoa July 22, 2008 8:10 am

Bhf2 ~ You have declared Whiskey-Alpha-Romeo on the ‘suits’ this morning. I know a little bit about that stuff. If we stir up media attention on these clowns and get on ’em – put ’em in the flood lights, that may force their hand to take action.

A little investigative reporting by a certain member of the media we know would do the trick. Make a little “Dateline NBC” Hawaiian style and hound them until they get that field built. A little full court press-shah.

We see the slogan on decal stickers all over “Ainokeah!” Should be just the opposite in this case, “WeKeah!”

  57. MeiLing July 22, 2008 8:10 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

Maika’i, Tim Grasso! Glad to hear he is well & kickin’.

Glad to hear that UH is thinking green, as in recycled paper for the media guides. And probably paying for Adam’s extra luggage to take the box of guides.

ST~ Are you in Utah for this? Hope your sister is doing better.

  58. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 8:10 am

    hi, Esme!

Yeah, Maverick, I remember that awful opener against USC not too long ago! ugh.

  59. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 8:12 am

Yes, ST, prayers for your sister!

  60. Kelli July 22, 2008 8:12 am

Pauoa Boy: You’re welcome. Believe it or not, we were REQUIRED to be able to type in Japanese for 102. Sensei made us submit a weekly diary/journal thing in Japanese via e-mail. After a while it got addicting and now I e-mail my friends from Japan like that. They were impressed, but are forever correcting my typos.

  61. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2008 8:12 am

If you want to be the best you got to beat the best, I say BCS or not bring em, we’ll pound em. If you keep playing teams you know you can blow out what does that do for you besides allow you an easy W? Then you wonder why we get no respect…

Top 25 needs to play Top 25 to be Top 25 to stay Top 25

  62. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2008 8:16 am

Kelli – If I even tried to type to you or anyone in Japanese, it’ll be like that phone commercial where I might call you something like stinky fish face…haha. I lived in Japan for almost 2-3 years and still don’t know what I’m saying except for sitting in a bar yelling Sake! Or Bonzai! 🙂

  63. da princess' classmate July 22, 2008 8:16 am

morning every1 – great news about the 2 verbal offers at yesterday’s camp to Benson Ma’afala and Chauncey M. (not gonna attempt da last name). hopefully we get to hear about some commits later today 🙂

  64. d1shima(tilted) July 22, 2008 8:19 am

    Kekoa/Koakane,
    Two words: tell ma’s

  65. curveball July 22, 2008 8:20 am

    Maverick:

Maybe JJ was already planning to leave and set us up…….

  66. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2008 8:21 am

Aunty Ronnie – No worries, I’m sure Adam went read em regardless…

I was going ask you if you knew of the scoops on the kicker from Temecula supposedly walking on to UH. Was talking with Garret and he said he went to Dan Kelly’s high school Linfield Christian. The only kid I know from that area is Colinn Yost, he played WR/DB/K/P. Good size at 6’3″ 195lbs. sort of like Kelly. Heard he’s attended some Kicking combines and camps and has been one of the top kickers in each. Just wondering if you knew…

  67. Kekoa July 22, 2008 8:22 am

Geezy ~ Welcome! Like your take on the QB situation. We are blessed with some really awesome QB’s!

If you live on island, please take some time off and come to the pre-season practices. Once the boys get suited up in full pads, make full contact, and work the plays…it’s survival of the fittest!

Check back into the WB archives for the practice times ST posted. It’s well worth the price of admission…$3 for parking.

  68. midori7 July 22, 2008 8:23 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Safe trip to ST & Adam Leonard.

Good to hear that Grasso is back in town & at workouts.

Hope to watch a couple of practices once Fall Camp begins.

  69. Kekoa July 22, 2008 8:26 am

D-1 ~ Gotcha on dat one ober dere! You make de telepone call to me when you are read-day.

  70. Maverick July 22, 2008 8:28 am

Opening with a top ten team, or AA is a double edge sword. Depends on where we sit with exposure and depth. If UH has been in the top levels with consistent years back – back, then all means, bring on those top powerhouse teams for a season opener.
But it hasn’t been that way. This Florida game with timing of date and middle of the day is nothing but rough edges. Our Warriors will need to be trimmed to sharpness like it’s the last game of the season and keep injuries to nada or minimum.
Our track record with the past years of this subject speaks the strut.

  71. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2008 8:30 am

Our Warriors need to play the so called big name schools to be considered amongst the best. If you can’t hang with the big boys you will always be picked on and never get any respect. I know you all want to see us get a W, gain confidence then go after the big fish, but to me I could care less. I say beginning of the season, during or end bring em anytime, anyplace. Like Fresno St. if you don’t have that mentality then you shouldn’t be playing D1 level and maybe should be D2. I dislike Fresno St. but there football team is well more respected than ours and I wonder why? Time to move up, not down, have faith, and BELIEVE or just moonwalk like MJ and beat it, just beat it… 🙂

  73. Maverick July 22, 2008 8:37 am

Just don’t schedule 2 AA games per year, and win those OOC/conference games, then the respect follows.
UH does have a chance, but If we can keep Florida from beating the vegas point spread, that’s a start in the right direction for this season.

  79. bonar July 22, 2008 8:42 am

#16: I’m really stoked Nielson committed, for several reasons. One, he has great ability, footwork, a good arm, and obviously will pick up the offense. Second, he plays smart. Third, it appears that Mack is doing a great deal of outreach to kids with ties to Hawaii and polys. The lure of “coming back” to Hawaii could be the equalizer for Hawaii when competing for studs against, in this case, the PAC 10.

Maverick – I think the days of two AA teams left us with that one Frazier guy…

Realistically we know our boys will have rough games competing with the big schools, but with Coach Mack steering the ship, I’m sure we’ll reach our destination to the Top 25 sooner rather than later…

    Pauoa Boy,

Brett Symonds is walking on to UH, as d1shima correctly pointed out last night. He’s the kicker from Temecula I referred to, but I forgot he was redshirting this season. He’ll take over after Dan Kelly moves on (hopefully) to the NFL.

  89. Geezy July 22, 2008 9:49 am

Yeah maybe we should be like Appalachian St. and schedule cupcakes like Michigan for our first game of the season…we might be able to catch them sleeping…hehehehe…….oh and didnt Michigan beat Florida in the bowl game last year??…hmmm

  90. Garret July 22, 2008 9:51 am

Link to Brett Symonds’ stats from last season.

  91. Garret July 22, 2008 9:52 am

Here is ST’s blog entry about Brett.

The Warriors won’t have to spend much time looking for successors to kicker Dan Kelly and long-snapper Jake Ingram.

Kicker Brett Symonds, who was raised in Kelly’s hometown of Temecula, Calif., and long-snapper Lucas Ingram, Jake’s younger brother, join the Warriors in August as walk-ons.

This rookie from App State with the Redskins found out that a teammate who went to Michigan still hasn’t gotten over how his team beat Michigan last year.

On one of the best days of Kerry Brown’s life, two of his fingers were broken and he was surrounded by more than 100,000 people who didn’t like him.

Brown, a rookie offensive lineman, attended Appalachian State, a small Division I-AA university in Boone, N.C. Last fall, the Mountaineers won at Michigan in one of the greatest upsets in college football history.

It was kind of like an ant defeating a can of Raid.

I walked over and introduced myself, but when I extended my hand, I noticed his were both holding helmets.

“This one’s Jon Jansen’s,” Brown said, referring to the Redskins’ veteran tackle who is a–gulp–Michigan alum. “He came over to me and said, ‘Hey, rook. Carry my helmet. Where’s Appalachian State now?'”

    Ouch.

But Brown didn’t have to say anything. He just paused and remembered that indelible day last fall. He remembered how the pain disappeared from his mangled fingers. He remembered how Michigan’s stadium was so eerily silent that he could hear one of his friends roaring in the upper deck.

I agree 100%, WTF is up with that?? Sadowski lost the bid for Murakami Stadium and wanted to give his company an advantage. As a member of the State Contractors Licensing Board, he came up with this “specialty license” requirement to eliminate qualified contractors. Strange how he is “not available for comment” with all this going on. If he thought it was not “for his benefit”, he would be out there explaining himself.

It appears that this wasn’t the first time that he changed licensing requirements when he didn’t win a competitive bid.

  104. Garret July 22, 2008 10:24 am

This article about non-BCS-conference schools getting to BCS games is pretty interesting. I’ll just post a few tidbits from the article here.

Beginning with Utah in 2004, mid-major teams have crashed the BCS three times now in four years, which makes the question less “Can anyone do it?” than “Who will it be?”

Not only have BCS party crashers been led by veteran quarterbacks, but half of them –Miami, Louisville, Utah and Hawaii — made their names behind once-in-a-generation types who served as the Face of the Program and put up obscene numbers. Louisville’s had a lot of great quarterbacks in the last decade, but none had a single season on par with Stefan LeFors’ shred job in 2004; Alex Smith, Ben Roethlisberger and Colt Brennan will be synonymous with the Utes, Red Hawks and Warriors for the rest of their lives

The only team with the ingredients and the schedule to make a BCS run, based on what’s come before, is BYU, despite the mass turnover on the Cougar defense. This seems to be the consensus: every poll released so far includes BYU in the top 25, including the one issued by Phil Steele, the only member of the prognostoscenti who dares to pick Utah to win the conference. USA Today specifically projects the Cougars to the Fiesta Bowl.

    Aloha everybody:

The State Procurement law strikes again, or I should say, a change in the procurement law strikes again.

Actually, I should say something “rotten” has struck the procurement law.

Or somebody is bending the truth to obtain an advantage.

And this is one of the beefs June had with the upper campus. And after all this drama ends, the lower campus is gonna look like a car dealarship.

Murakami Stadium and Ching/Cooke Field may have TWO different types of turf installed on the lower campus.

    As time marches on!

  111. (Jesse) James July 22, 2008 10:30 am

d1…I have to agree. UH has to do that though to cover themselves. Even though the Board says “It’s just a guideline.” Someone will say, that UH didn’t follow the “guideline” and take them to court and with the way courts are interpreting things now days the outcome is not certain. The Board needs/needed to make the determination clear. Is a special license going to be required or not. Either way, UH would be covered with clear direction. As it is, UH is unsure of how to proceed.

I like the assistant vice chancellor for campus services’s answer though, “Whoever is doing this must be working for Boise State.” MWAHAHAHAHAHA

  112. Stretch July 22, 2008 10:33 am

Whoever is doing this must be working for Boise State.

whatever, just as long as they don’t make the Cooke/Ching Field blue.

  113. (Jesse) James July 22, 2008 10:34 am

Stretch – I believe it is a postion appointed by the Governor and advised and consented on (approved) by the Senate. I don’t think having that guy appointed was the problem. In actuality, it’s what he did after being appointed that’s the problem. He should not have been allowed to propose those ideas. If those ideas were proposed by someone else, than he should have recused himself from voting for obvious reasons. But for him to propose the idea and the Board to discuss the idea knowing full well the conflicts the member had was just plain wrong…not to mention idiotic….

  114. Ralph July 22, 2008 10:36 am

Pauoa Boy your comments on #71 rings true….We play N. Colo. and Charleston Southern and people complain, to weak and not worthy of scheduling, we play Florida, the other half complain, to strong and blame JJ for putting UH on the line…go figure….I agree, we need the Fresno mentality for all WAC teams for the conference to get better, won’t be easy but to gain respect we got to compete with the best.

  128. Koauka July 22, 2008 10:58 am

    Ralph:

Thanks, read the story. This is my theory.

When the procurement folks at UH wrote the specificatons for the Murakami Stadium installation, from what I was told, just about anybody with a contractor’s license could bid on the project. So at the end, Mr Hamacon’s company won the bid, using Domo turf as the product.

You cannot specifically state a brand name in the specifications, such as Field Turf, Domo Turf, Astro Play, or Ainokea Turf.

Now, months later, the UH Athletic Department decides they have the dollars to proceed and take bids on the renovation of Cooke/Ching Field.
But somebody in power has a friend who is in the turf business. The “juice” is really on now.

You can write the specifications for this job to fit the individual you choose to get the bid. Very rotten indeed. Thus eliminating all your competition including Mr. Hamacon.

  129. Stretch July 22, 2008 11:02 am

Koauka – It isn’t someone in power has a “friend”. It is the guy who has some power who has his own company that it appears he is trying to benefit with the change.

  130. Ralph July 22, 2008 11:03 am

Koauka I believe that a lot of state contracts are written with the intent of limiting who can bid on the contract, its part of the old boy network working for us….need to ask James to check the political contributions by the board member in question, whose hands is he greasing…

A late or slow response will not be acceptable to numerous UH fans across the State.

  133. Kazz July 22, 2008 11:11 am

I looked up Verna Oda’s contact information based on:

Now a contractor’s allegation of unethical actions by a competitor who sits on the state Contractors License Board could push Cooke Field’s completion date to December, according to Hafner.

The contractor’s argument stems from an October decision by the licensing board to require that contractors carry a special license — called a C-68FF — to install turf at sports facilities.

On Friday the board deferred a decision until its Aug. 22 meeting on whether the new rule should be reversed.

Verna Oda, the board’s executive officer, said the board’s October decision is “informal” and “nonbinding” and is only a “guideline” for state agencies.

But Hafner said the university must follow the guidelines. It will proceed with opening bids on Friday but might postpone awarding the estimated $1.2 million job until the state board makes a clear ruling, he said. Otherwise the university could face a protest — a formal complaint by a contractor that can hold up construction.

  138. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 22, 2008 12:01 pm

As many of you know, I’ve been following the Invitation to Bid process for the Ching/Cooke Field from the beginning but not just because I’m a UH fan.

First of all, the bidding process did not start until July 1, 2008, because that’s when this fiscal year began. However, the techspecs were indeed known beforehand. I saw them back in early June.

I know someone who was interested in bidding on the contract for two reasons: First, the owner of the landscape architecture business is a devoted UH fan and would have been proud to help improve the facilities on campus; second, he’s interested in expanding his contractor’s business to include artificial turf which is used in a lot of places other than just sports facilities.

He made arrangements to bring a colleague in from the Dallas area for a three-month working vacation to train & supervise local employees if he’d won the contract; however, after looking over the technical specifications, he said that the new requirements would disqualify the company so he decided not to move forward with the bid submission process.

However, the law and the regulations themselves are very clear: The members of any board or commission have to recuse themselves when there are conflicts of interesting which will happen fairly frequently in Hawai`i given its small population base. All members of all boards and commissions are almost always active or retired members of that profession – dentists, CPAs, beauticians, etc. Only when the law establishing the commission notes that community members must be involved are non-professionals on that board.

Is this Lingle’s fault – much as I dislike her performance as governor – no. The Board and its attorney assigned to it by the Attorney General‘s office need to step up and enforce their own rules.

I strongly urge that instead of just writing Verna Oda that you also contact Mark Bennett, the Attorney General, as well as State Senator Russell Kokubun, the chair of the Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing Committee which is the subject matter committee which oversees the Contractors’ License Board. The Governor’s Office should also be contacted, but bear in mind that it does not have any direct control over Ms. Oda; however, pressure can be put on her to do the right thing through her Big Boss who is a gubernatorial appointment.

Other members of CPH are Senators David Ige, Will Espero, Les Ihara, Jr., Norman Sakamoto, Brian Taniguchi, and Gordon Trimble. Remember also that Sakamoto chairs the Education Committee and UH Manoa is in Taniguchi’s district.

Here is the process by which all boards & commissions are filled. People apply to the Governor to be appointed to a particular board or commission. Staff screen the applications and then submit lists – there are literally dozens of boards & commissions – for a particular seat.

The Governor selects someone – sometimes it’s political and sometimes it’s not – and sends the name down to the Senate President who then sends the nomination to a particular Senate committee. They hold hearings and make a recommendation and then it goes to the full Senate for a floor vote. If approved, then the person is sworn in during a ceremony – usually in the Governor’s office.

Sometimes, new appointees have to wait until the start of a fiscal year while others may take office immediately.

NOTE: Members of the State House are not directly involved; however, many of them do communicate with the specific senators about their concerns. Please communicate your concerns.

Anyways, You might want to try and contact this gentleman.

Mr. Lawrence Reifurth – Director of Commerce and Consumer Affairs

I believe that he is “above” the Board in regard to this matter.

Good luck. I already left a couple of messages for Ms./Mrs. Oda…waiting to hear from her…but I think she has been busy today…

    A-HOUSE:

David Hafner, the University of Hawaii at Manoa‘s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Services.

  141. Kazz July 22, 2008 12:06 pm

    A-House,

David Hafner is listed as UH’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for campus services.

Through the article I cannot see exactly what his “role” in all of this is other than he’s explaining the situation the school is in.

Seems like AGAIN the school is stuck in the middle of a BUNCH of red tape.

But I think this paragraph says it all in terms of what UH “can” do in light of the situation:

the university must follow the guidelines. It will proceed with opening bids on Friday but might postpone awarding the estimated $1.2 million job until the state board makes a clear ruling, he said. Otherwise the university could face a protest — a formal complaint by a contractor that can hold up construction.

Again, this seems to fall on the State Contractors License Board.

    Whoops!!

Sorry – my last post was not a complete sentence post. Got interrupted by a phone call.

David Hafner, Jr. is the University of Hawaii at Manoa</b.’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Services. He reports to Virginia Hinshaw. Here is his contact information:

    Name: David T Hafner, Jr
    Email: hafner@hawaii.edu
    Affiliation: Staff
    Office Phone: (808) 956-4636, (808) 366-8850
    Office Fax: (808) 956-2165
    Office Location: PPB 113
Job Title: Asst, VC for Campus Srvcs
Department Name: Office of Facilities and Grounds
Campus Affiliation: University of Hawaii at Manoa

  143. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 22, 2008 12:19 pm

The Office of Facilities and Grounds is the UHoffice directly overseeing the Ching/Cooke Field replacement project and its upkeep – and, for that matter, all construction, maintenance & repairs anywhere on campus.

It is his call as to what company gets the contract – and he has to abide by the laws and regulations established by the Contractors’ License Board.

The change HAS TO BE MADE at the Contractors’ License Board level because the University cannot disregard the rules undr which it is mandated to operate

  148. Stretch July 22, 2008 12:27 pm

I think that UH is stuck and has no control over what is required for the State contract to fix the field.

The people who need to answer the questions are Verna Oda, the Licensing Board’s executive officer who allowed this to occur and Sadwoski the one who proposed this requirement and owns a company that this requirement benefits.

I have no problem with the requirement IF it benefits UH with a better product. BUT, it appears it was proposed to eliminate competition, drive up the bid prices, and give the best chance to fatten up Sadowski’s wallet.

  149. Stretch July 22, 2008 12:28 pm

Car Rental: Yes we have that reservation, but we have no cars available.

    Jerry: What do you mean?

Car Rental: I mean we have been booked full.

Jerry: But I made a reservation in advance. The reservation is supposed to HOLD the car to make sure I have one when I get here.

Car Rental: Yes sir, I know what a reservation is.

Jerry: I don’t think you do.

    following way:
    • Reliable: attends all meetings
    • Active: participates in discussion and decisions; Legislative Committee
    Chair
    • Honest: always honest and fair in decision making
    • Knowledgeable: his industry knowledge is greatly beneficial to our Board
    • Cordial: he is greatly liked by the Board
    • Respectful; to those around the table and those who come before it

I have the addenda(ums) sitting right next to me. The original called for is Contractors’ License A and no further modifications were listed in the additional techspec change documents; however, my friend found out about the change during a phone call to the CLB.

Actually, the original date for opening bids was the 7th, then the 11th, and now the 25th.

The statement made earlier that the specific turf manufacturer cannot be identified in the bid is incorrect. In fact, that is required. Here it is directly from the official document:

    :

    1. Turf Manufacturer: Submit a reference list, letter, and specification sheet from the Turf Manufacturer certifying that the proposed turf and infill system meets or exceeds all specified requirements of this section.

The reference list shall identify one (1) or more existing NCAA or professional football field(s) in which the proposed turf and infill system has been successfully installed. The reference list sha;l include contact person(s) along with their telephone number(s).

  186. Kazz July 22, 2008 1:46 pm

Here is a draft of my letter. I’m going to add more to it, but this is what just came off of the top of my head.

    Aloha,

I am writing in concern to the recent issue regarding the bidding controversy for the job of installing synthetic turf at the Clarence TC Ching Complex on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

I represent no organization with any affiliation with the University, the athletic department, the Clarence TC Ching Foundation, or any other company seeking bids for this $1.2 million project. However I feel that I represent the thousands of Hawaii residents with a vested interest in UH athletics and the future of athletics in Hawaii.

It seems that the priority of education and athletics in association with an institute of higher learning in Hawaii has taken a back seat to those that may seek to benefit from the specific funds appropriated for those it was intended to.

The Clarence TC Ching Foundation gave the University, it’s students, and it’s fans the kind of hope that was missing for a better future for the success of the University’s athletic program when they donated five million dollars to help provide the kind of facility that our young people deserve in order to stay competitive with other institutions. In the long run the objective is to give our kama’aina the same advantages others have enjoyed elsewhere.

It is my wish, along with the wish of others that this issue be resolved with the utmost urgency and importance. It is also my hope that the State Contractors License Board would not want to have a hand in any kind of interference with the goal of giving our young athletes the best resources in order to fully represent themselves and Hawaii to the world.

  217. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 22, 2008 2:32 pm

I’m waiting for my next appointment so here are some comments on Kazz’s letter.

First of all, the money for the field has been allocated by the Legislature and comes from public funds. The grant from the Ching Foundation will be used for other aspects of the complex which will require additional funding from the Legislature over the next couple of years.

Second, it’s also very important that our letters be well-written with proper spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc., and signed with full names and contact information.

For example, the following sentence has two errors: “The Clarence TC Ching Foundation gave the University, it’s students, and it’s fans….” The words should be its students and its fans. If you are not sure whether to use it’s or its, use the following test – it’s is a contraction for it is so if the sentence makes sense using it is, then use the contraction it’s. If it doesn’t make sense, then use its. In this case, saying it is students and it is fans does not make sense so its is the correct spelling

There are other minor errors as well, but I won’t go over them here unless requested.

Please remember that real letters written on real paper make a much more positive impression than e-mails. And, of course, no cursing, name-calling, or unsubstantiated charges.

Anyone want to check out Lingle’s campaign contribution fund? She has to file them two times a year except during an election cycle in which she’s a candidate.

Just got off the phone with Mrs. Oda.

In a nutshell, her stance if that at the time of discussions, their was no knowledge about the bids. Basically, Mr. Sadowski was included in the discussions because he has experience in the field, etc. and they were just talking story. When I asked her about if they though about the potential for a conflict of interest, she said that they were not thinking about that and just wanted to clarify the question of ‘Who can do what kind of work?” There was also a landscaping co. that inquired about if they could do it with their specific permit, thus the talks went on. She did not know anything about Mr. Sadowskis bids and or the bidding process.

I asked what they plan on doing about the situation/article statements and she just said they are going to talk about it during the next couple of meetings and since the bidding process for Ching/Cooke field will not start yet, nothing about that special permit will be changed.

After talking about this with her, I have the feeling that she does not feel that they did anything wrong and it was just the timing of everything that made this into something bigger then it is.

Garret and d1shima, thanks for the clarification on the walk-on kicker. I was thinking that he went to Dan Kelly’s former high school and the Collin Yost kid was the only one close that I could find. The kid you are talking about went to a different school but does have a pretty lively leg. I’m sure he’ll fit right in as we’ve always had solid kickers in the past.

    I CALLED REIFURTH’S #, LEFT HIM A MESSAGE.
TOLD THE LADY THAT I’M MEETING DUKE SUNDAY, AND WILL SPEAK TO HIM DIRECTLY ABOUT THIS “SNAFU.” TOLD HER TO TELL HIM I’M DOING BETTER THAN THAT, GOING ON THE INTERNET, TELLING ALL MY FRIENDS, TOLD HER I DON’T WANT TO HEAR EXCUSES, I WANT THIS THING FIXED NOW.

    d1SHIMA,
    1. Just got off the phone with David Hafner. Reminded him that a democrat and a republican, both looking at identical facts, will articulate well reasoned and opposite results. Reminded him of Denzel Washington’s line in Conspiracy Theory, “youre the FBI, make it happen.” Told him I wanted to see results now. He said he’ll do his best. Told him I’m having lunch with Duke Sunday. Will remind the bradda that results is what we’re looking for, now and not next year.

    D1SHIMA,

thanks for letting me know that it was Sadowski who did the job at Keaau HS field. its a great field. but thats not my point. the point is, like i told Hafner, we got a football team that needs the equipment now, not later. told Haftner I’m hearing all the excuses why we gotta go through the process. told him i not interested in the excuses, i like no wen da ting stay fixed.

called and left a similar message with da contractor guy. he was in a meeting, couldn’t ah been Hafner cuz Hafner wuz in his own office. Hafner had all da reasons why, as a State agency, gotta have the bid opened this coming Friday.

in old Hawaii, there was a saying about da shifty eyed liar,

ho’o puni puni mai, ho’o palai maka. we’ll see how it goes. don’t care who gets the job, all i care is that it gets done now.

I’m going to the Boise game. Check SteveM’s site.

chawan_cut–the direct address of the page is…

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/away08.html

The last I heard, the Oregon State group has a group email list going on and coordinating cattle call and logistics for getting to/from Corvallis. Lots of Tsai-kos involved with LizKauai, Stretch, and wafan in the mix.

The smaller Boise group (which has fewer variables) have exchanged emails and cell phone numbers and are in good shape to develop plans. d1shima and Ronnie are the early arrivals.

The Fresno State group is just starting to organize around Ronnie and Rob25. All listed know how to contact each other and have met in the past.

🙂 Really interesting how the road game plans are developing this year…very different from last year when only 2-3 people were known to met (except Las Vegas). Anyone think Las Vegas 2009 is gonna be something really big…? 😕

    false cracks,

regarding the post you mentioned, #217, it simply amazes me when people have the time and the lack of sensitivity to correct others. the last time i checked, this was a ‘blog’ and not English 369 at Harvard. am i mistaken?

some of us are very eloquent and anal retentive in their posts, others tend to shoot from the hip to keep the conversation going. and then, there are others who will sit and feel content to ‘correct’ the writers who have shared their thoughts.

why is that? is it because of insecurity, low self esteem, a lifetime of unrealized dreams, the constant need to feel importand and in control…the list is endless. from what i have observed in this blog ‘ohana’ is that it is fairly wide open and everyone gets along pretty well. that is what makes it interesting to read for me, and keeps me warm along with the embers in my fireplace.

when i read posts like that it makes me realize that Hawaii has changed, and the memories i cherish are nothing like the Hawaii i read about now, auwe, so sad.

Hi Kazz and Jack Flash –

Jack – You asked Kazz to post a sample of his letter to assist you with your own letter. That’s great!

Kazz – You were kind enough to accommodate Jack and all others interested in writing their own letters by quickly posting your thoughts in a draft letter. Mahalo!

IMO – Kazz, you did an outstanding job in composing a letter, albeit minor mistakes, that was clear, concise and in words that every one of us Warrior faithful could comfortably use in his/her own letter. As you posted, this was only a DRAFT, and your words flowed “from the top of your head”. That’s all that was expected of you, and you are to be commended! I liked your draft very much!

To those who feel the disgust and frustration about the Cooke/Ching Field turf dispute, I encourage you to write those letters, in words that speak from the heart. DO NOT second guess yourselves that it “may not be written well enough” or “may reflect on my writing skills”. There is power in numbers, folks. Remember, a letter can be as simple as one sentence expressing your displeasure. If hundreds/thousands of letters spill onto the desk of Verna Oda, she has no option but to respond in a public forum. Each of our letters should end with words expressing our expectation that a prompt reply/response will be forthcoming soonest!

JUST DO IT !! I can assure you that you will feel good about yourself. UH fans want only the best for our athletes, and any number of reminders of that fact can’t hurt.

  278. FloridaTed July 22, 2008 3:41 pm

    Geezy,

All you have to remember is 2005, Graunke was the anointed one, but we all know what happened with that JC guy named Colt. The JC’s now would have to show incredible talent and savvy to overtake either Funaki or Graunke. We don’t know enough at this time to really make a good assessment. That’s why training camp will be exciting this year, so much talent, so many unknowns.

  279. Geezy July 22, 2008 3:42 pm

homey, thats true about the juco qb’s…i was bringing up the past earlier about how 1st year quarterbacks in our offense struggled during JJ’s years here…i think Dan Robinson grasped it the quickest being that he was in a whole different offense during the Von Appen years…Took Rolo and Timmy a year, and took Colt a year too… although i must say that Colt grasped it fairly well his first year…still he mentioned in 06 that he finally understood the whole Offense…If these JUCO guys can do it…then go with the best

  295. Maverick July 22, 2008 3:57 pm

Thanks Homey. I meant to fill that in about our JC’s being gifted too.
I believe they are and will recieve playing time this year, which will be anticipated by all of us, and hopefully spectacular.

But, how often does a JUCO come in and take over the helm from a Senior QB that played the previous season and won critical games for us? When I see Graunke back up, roll out with the option keeper or throw, I have the confidence that it will end up in the right spot. Our backups need to learn from Tyler. Inoke is right there too, learning and teaching.

This is an ancy moment for myself and all. We all want to see our QB’s on the field, but there are not enough games in this tough season

  296. Bulla July 22, 2008 4:01 pm

    Maverick,

I agree, but we gotta go with who can move the ball and get the W’s, anything less is not acceptable. Too many BIG games that we cannot afford to fall behind. Our schedule is stacked against us, thank you Fumbler, and it will be tough enough getting 7 if not 8 wins.

I’ll tell you straight out- Don’t EVER use anyones writing as an example to critique on an open forum without their permission. I don’t care what your reason is or how compelled you feel, just don’t do it. You should know better. That is extremely bad manners and was done in bad taste.

Please show more class than that. I expect better judgment from a person of your stature.

    Thank you.

  299. d1shima [sez:] July 22, 2008 4:09 pm

Kind of playing the middle ground here (which may leave a lot of flanks open, but, oh well).
I see that Kazz posted a draft of his letter and WDoc was just suggesting from her experience that it would be better to submit something that was grammatically correct. Her purpose in doing so, I think, was to offer a way to make his effort more effective not necessarily just for the sake of displaying her knowledge of English composition. (which, if I recall correctly, is considerable)
From my perspective, Kazz put the thing out in a public forum and so it’s open for discussion. Some may have ideas about the content that might reshape Kazz’ final composition; WDoc seems to have ideas about the form that could have the same value. FWIW, I cut her some slack.

    d1,

in that perspective as you have presented, i would concur with you ever so slightly.

however, history shall repeat itself as said by a famous person many years ago.

hope all is well with #2son, (another wildcat….puuuurfect) haha. give my best to your lovely bride….

    A-House,

I love your energy and passion SIR!!!

    Mrs. A-House,

You always manage to say the right things and like you mentioned, things said from the “heart” are indeed the best statements.

    Bless you both.

  306. Maverick July 22, 2008 4:12 pm

    Ahhh –
Bulla my friend. I always agree with your way of thinking.
There are two shiny sides to this copper penny.
Yes, who can move the ball is the most critical, and stay focused without pressure.
Oh daddy-o, what a season coming forth for pressure. This can only be seen at the present time, on the field, with 3rd down conversions.
Can our top 4 QB’s pull this off? I do think so, but I’m not their age anymore to relate.

BTW, Can’t wait to see your Jr @ UH this season. Memories 4 sure :>

  307. d1shima [sez:] July 22, 2008 4:17 pm

With the task at hand of devestating the Florida backfield come August 31st, TSAIKOS get biggah fish fo’ fry!!!!

  311. Bulla July 22, 2008 4:23 pm

    Maverick,

mahalo for the good thoughts. i believe the Warriors are going to have a great season; a time to see what they’re made of. hopefully, they have been training hard in the offseason. i hear conflicting stories about certain linebackers, and one DE who is not returning to the team at all.

we’re deep with players, but like you and i both know, you need repetitions to make demolitions…..grammitcally correct? nah. who cares….

offense has it’s work cut out for them, defense will be tough, secondary will have to STEP IT UP, from the first snap…..no asbestos suits for our guys, it’s all shakin or bacon….and we’ll know quick.

    Imua Warriors!!!

  312. BG July 22, 2008 4:23 pm

    Frosty

No worries…just some folks playing…don’t take it seriously.

Welcome! Keep posting and you’ll get to know the zany characters around here mo bettah…wait, is that a good thing?

    Kazz,

    great letter.

  319. Kazz July 22, 2008 4:37 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

Just like you, I CANNOT wait for the new uniforms to go on sale. I heard the same thing as well about an August release but I didn’t hear anything about a late release in September.

I think if I get desperate enough, I may consider bothering Johnny Mac about it but seems like a minute detail.

Also, I don’t know if UA makes authentic cut jerseys for sale to the public. For the other schools with UA, I haven’t seen them available.

BTW, MySpace website is acting funny. I got your message but I am stuck trying to log on… Eh whatever, MySpace is free and as they say “you get what you paid for”.

  320. Kazz July 22, 2008 4:39 pm

    J-Dog,

Yup. That’s what the “220’s” are for!

  321. Kazz July 22, 2008 4:41 pm

    Bulla,

I don’t think they make authentic available either but can hope for now…
I just feel if I going invest in something that I going wear proudly might as well go all out! I always believe in buying quality and not quantity!

  326. Jason July 22, 2008 4:46 pm

I like the media guide. Lots of good information. I wish they could make all the media guides from past years available, but Derek Inouchi tells me they don’t have them from too far back.

  329. FloridaTed July 22, 2008 4:49 pm

    Geezy,

In 2005 we also had a very talented, but also very green team in general, that was the main reason for the loosing season and JJ’s general aversion to tough defense.

I really like it that nobody is giving our team any credit this year. It will be sweet to shock a few people. Off course, should we slay the monster in the swamp, the cat’s surely out of the bag.

  330. ラスベガス July 22, 2008 4:50 pm

  331. Kazz July 22, 2008 4:50 pm

    Chawan,

Last season I printed out the entire media guides for all the games.

Don’t worry I bring them to the recycle bin at work.

Regardless they are a good read. Never can have too much info. Besides it’s interesting to see what’s released to the media.

My favorite was the player pronounciations they provided for some of the UH football players.

NO matter how they spell it out, there is NO WAY some people in broadcasting on the mainland will ever get them right.

Like that announcer who referred to Ikaika Alama-Francis as “IKA-IKA” aka “squid squid Alama-Francis”.

  334. cinnamongal July 22, 2008 4:53 pm

I went to Big City Diner for lunch today and the UH football schedule poster was up all over the place (including the Wahine soccer and volleyball posters). I asked the restourant host if it was possible to have or even buy one of the posters for my 7 y.o. son who is a huge Warriors fan, but disappointingly they said no. Couldn’t even spare one…

I noticed the marquee players posted on the poster were defensive players but Solomon Elimimian and, aghast, Adam Leonard weren’t even on there.

  335. Maverick July 22, 2008 4:54 pm

Ok, I’m not gone, too addicting.

    Ted, Howzit ?
Your right, being under publised is the way to go.
Why go with the grain, when you can shock ’em

Tazer those bugga’s into logical sense that our Hawaii Nei are now contenders.

  337. Kazz July 22, 2008 4:55 pm

    FloridaTed,

In 2005 I will always remember my friend pointing out that #7 at wide receiver would be “better than Chad Owens”.

Turns out #7 was pretty darn good. Better than Chad Owens tho?

I’ll leave that up for discussion and I won’t comment on that.

    D1,

    212 pages?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

Ok ok ok.. I admit I haven’t even opened the link but I was thinking something along the lines of 50-70 pages long…

Um…. maybe would be best for me to just print out the rosters after all hehehehehehehehe…

  343. Stephen Tsai July 22, 2008 5:10 pm

OK, I’m back from the party, and now I’m ready to write my stories.

  344. FloridaTed July 22, 2008 5:13 pm

    Maverick,

Last year the boys played every game with a bullseye on their backs, resulting in a few too close for comfort games. The constant pressure was tremendous. This year they can play free, unless they beat Florida, then the bullseye goes right back up.

    Kazz,

Can’t really compare Owens and Bess. In my opinion they were both great in their own styles. Owens was exciting, because he played like a Kamikaze, while Bess had more the coolness of a pro early on.

  345. Ralph July 22, 2008 5:13 pm

Bighilofan2 will help, post your name to send check or e mai me at mahinaula at yahoo dot com

  347. FloridaTed July 22, 2008 5:17 pm

Your most welcome back, oh Tsai-Meister.

  348. Garret July 22, 2008 5:17 pm

    Kazz,

If you include special teams then I have to go with Chad. Plus, UH had more WR weapons with Bess so teams could not focus on Bess. RGM and Rivers had similar stats to Bess, but UH didn’t have 2 guys like that with Chad.

  349. Rob25 July 22, 2008 5:17 pm

Hey ST When I was in Vegas the other week, my rental car (Dodge Charger) had one of those platic keys. I was debating on which car I was going to take and this group of men wanted it, but I already took the key, looking around at the other cars available…but that sealed the deal. If all the men wanted it, then why would I settle for a Camry when I could rule the streets in a “man’s’ car. hehehehe

Wondered about the panic button, but didn’t dare touch. Hubby was just glad that he didn’t have to drive (I’ve been to Vegas more than him and know the area better).

    What’s the weather like?

  350. Maverick July 22, 2008 5:18 pm

Ted, Last years bulleyes was the 50 points compared to playing darts.
This years bullseye is even greater, because they achieved the high standards of Conference champs.

There all jealous, and want that trophy, but we’re not giving it back.
Our Warriors WILL be the Champs again.

    No Bu’Laia

  351. Garret July 22, 2008 5:20 pm

    ST,

I’m sure that we are all looking forward to reading your stories from the WAC Media Preview. I’m very curious to see where UH is picked to finish in the WAC…I think that anyone picking UH lower than 3rd is crazy, but I already saw (and posted) a 6th and 7th prediction.

  352. Rob25 July 22, 2008 5:20 pm

  358. bighilofan2 July 22, 2008 5:35 pm

i dragged this over from Sunday’s SB article on Hui Waa qualifiers for States.

Kai Poha steersman Kama Lee Loy, 17, helped guide the men sophomore crew to a third-place finish — enough to maintain their one-point edge over Na Keiki O Ka Mo’i at the start of the day.

Lee Loy already has three state victories from his time with Keaukaha Canoe Club on the Big Island, and can offer up some advice to his teammates for their big race two weeks away.

“I see crews lining up on the starting line … huge,” said the incoming senior at Kamehameha. “Sixteen-year-olds that line up that are monsters. They don’t look 18; they don’t even look 16.

“But the size in the boat doesn’t matter,” he continued. “I just recommend…not to look around. Don’t worry about the other[s]. We’re racing for us… Nothing to do with whoever else is out there. It’s all about us.”

ho boy, my nephew wuz talkin to US. Its not about Florida, or Boise, Fresno… its about us.

So Verna, Hafner, Livehurt, whoeva, whateva…
fix da field. no like see um fixed next year… too late yu buggaz if nex yeeah. yu foget JJ already?? yu foget da soap? yu fogettin about US? wat? yu need one paperwork, requisition order? gotta follow HRS Chapter 91? wat? yu tryin fo keep one job till yu retiiah? gotta look buzy? need sumtin fo do fo write 1 repoht? make like yu did sumtin good. 361. d1shima July 22, 2008 5:40 pm

OK, I gotta go see the sign guy again. But not about a sign…

  362. Garret July 22, 2008 5:44 pm

Looks like the Central Arkansas deal is signed.

After several weeks of negotiation, UCA has signed a contract to play the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009. The time will be announced, but Brad Teague, UCA athletic director, expects it to be about 6 p.m. Hawaii time, which will be about 11 p.m. (CDT).

Hawaii, a Western Athletic Conference team that played Georgia in last year’s Sugar Bowl, will pay the travel expenses for the UCA team and furnish at $125,000 paycheck for UCA to play the game.

Conque said UCA will treat the game as a preseason bowl game.

“This is something I had envisioned when we recruited these players who will be seniors in 2006,” Conque said. “It’s our first group we recruited officially in Division I. They knew they would have a chance to play for some conference championships, but they also came to us knowing they were not going to be able to play in postseason. In 2009, I wanted to give those dozen or so seniors a reward game, preferably something exotic. This is perfect.”

Both Conque and Teague were happy about the publicity that should result from UCA playing a major college opponent.

“”There’re probably will not be many games that Friday night (Labor Day Weekend) and that should give us good exposure on ESPN and other channels on Saturday morning with highlights,” Teague said.

“One of the ESPN channels, like ESPN U, telecasts games with Hawaii, so we have a chance for some great exposure,

    good day to all

in case you wondering I was with hpd all morning. no nothing to do with kekoa. son’s car was stolen from in front our house some time between 11 and 5 this morning. after filling out all reports, closing down his card and other stuff took him to work. little before noon police calls him tell him his car was found. someone reported a strange car blocking their house mailbox and it was his. so I drove him to pick it up at village park. passenger side key lock busted and the ignition housing smashed open. well there went the stimulus check monies.

much talk about refurbishing cooke/ching field. yesterday I was talking with kt and he said there is more to the saga yet to be unfolded. and no kt is not one of jessie made up mahu’s he works with UH facilities personnel.

This always bring up the interesting controversy of AA vs. 1-A for a season opener.

As mentioned before, it’s always a double edge sword.
What does the AA accomplish ? Depends on where the teams depth lyes at the moment. Does it help send our members into the NFL ?, or should be open with a mid major, or top 25 team.
In my opinion, it;s all good. These guys are playing, there in school, not being fools, getting their education, and excercising their skills and discipline.
The guys that play at Central Arkansas could probably be accepted to any 1-A school in the state bordering region.

  373. bighilofan2 July 22, 2008 6:06 pm

Doris doesn’t need anymore equipment, so sending kala.

Gotta save some kala to get season tickets from LizK. Mahalo nui loa!!!

    That Sadowski business sounds under-handed.

Hi, Princess Leila! Miss your videos…

BTW, are Nissan Altimas a target, too? Daughter has hers parked in front of our house — sometimes on the street, sometimes in our driveway.

  380. koakane™ July 22, 2008 6:29 pm

    kazz,

hpd says our area is highest for stolen vehicles on oahu. what kind car you had? son had a honda civic the most type stolen and they say easiest. it used for racing and crusing all over. I know his mom and me told him to get something else but they no listen to the parents maybe now differant story bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

funny they never take his dart set so asport still can patnah with you…whew.

    gotta go now…………………..

  381. brew808 July 22, 2008 6:31 pm

Princess Leila did an Esme??? It was very nice to have you visit the WB neighborhood this afternoon! 😀

  382. Kazz July 22, 2008 6:34 pm

    Gigi,

In the end it was funny and looking back I was eventually going to have to buy a new car soon, but at the time, it was a personal violation and at 3am I was walking around like a maniac on the street screaming with a katana in hand. Needless to say, the guava tree at the side of my house never survived the incident.

Yeah, I get nuts when I get personally violated like that.

    Koakane,

I had a ’93 Sentra at the time. Bought it cheap from a military family that needed to unload it after they got stationed elsewhere.

The car I have today is the one I bought afterwards. Originally the dealership at Mike McKenna offered to put me in a Mazda 6, but I didn’t want a vehicle that was a target for theft.

I figured I’d buy the Tribute as SUV-type cars don’t get stolen as often as cars.

  383. brew808 July 22, 2008 6:36 pm

LV sure faded out quickly…. If he doesn’t reappear in a couple days, do we call that a homey? 😆

  384. gigi-hawaii © July 22, 2008 6:41 pm

Yeah, Kazz, I know about personal violations. My apt in New York was burglarized twice and I also was mugged at gunpoint in an elevator on 5th Avenue. Took me a looong time to get over it.

  385. Kazz July 22, 2008 6:41 pm

    Gigi,

Have your daughter think about investing in this:

    http://www.securityworld.com/pc-1607-110-auto-brake-lock.aspx

It’s like the club except it latches on to the brake or clutch.

Much harder for punks to remove than the club (which is placed on the steering wheel).

On the website it’s 19.99, but I bought one at Checker’s Auto Parts for 70.00 with a 20.00 rebate a few years back so maybe they’re cheaper now.

You can just about pick one up anywhere where automobile parts/accesories are sold.

I remember the day I bought it because a former co-worker had a Civic and he swore by it. That night, with my new car, I had to go to Waikiki at night and I was still paranoid so I immediately bought one.

    It’s a good investment.

Nice visit/chat by Mr. Leonard yesterday. I wish someone would have asked him for his #-TD goal? Question – which Warrior has the biggest (and scariest) grin – Mr. Leonard, or Mr. Watson? 😆 😯 😆

  390. Kazz July 22, 2008 6:45 pm

    Gigi,

I think no one ever gets over things like that, especially being robbed at gun point.

Only thing we can do is to be more cautious without living in constant fear… Otherwise.. the punks win.

    Gigi,

    ***WARNING***

About the lock for the brake is that you better NOT forget to take it off when you turn the ignition.

I keep the key for the lock on my key chain with my car keys and I have to turn the engine off to remove it and then start the ignition all over again.

I know it sounds like a minor inconvience, but it can get irritating.

  396. brew808 July 22, 2008 6:55 pm

Ok, I normally wouldn’t be so addicted to this blog, but I can’t help it.

I live with my five-year-old cousin and today we tried to get him to say what school I go to. I tried to throw the hint that it’s the same school Colt Brennan went to (he remembers Colt). Instead of saying UH, like he normally would, my uncle threw in “university” and unintentionally confused him. Therefore, I’m now a proud student of “University of Colt Brennan,” according to this little monkey boy.

When looking through the 2009 Under Armour All-Americans, I see Te’o and Hasiak from Hawaii. I thought that Bulla mentioned that Hilliard was in the game also, so this roster does not appear to be complete.

  413. Pauoa Boy July 22, 2008 9:30 pm

BHF2 – Nothing like a good set of Jugs to work with. Our WR’s need all the hands on training and touches they can get from those Jugs. Practicing with a good working set of Jugs will ensure they don’t drop there balls! 🙂

  414. Garret July 22, 2008 9:31 pm

If anyone wants to see Samson, Reagan, and Bess practice, this article contains the list of the practices open to the public.

Dolphins practice schedule open to public

Guys these are the practices open to the public. Of course, if it rains, they’ll move it into the practice bubble and that will be closed to public.

  415. Garret July 22, 2008 9:33 pm

This article claims that the Big 12 is the best conference for QBs this year.

They come in all shapes and sizes, many of them in smaller sizes, to be frank, but don’t tell Todd Reesing he’s too short. He’s one of several under 6 feet, all of them accomplished, winning quarterbacks.

“They say a guy has to be 6-4 so he can drop back and throw over a guy that’s 6-7. That’s a bunch of falsehoods,” Texas Tech’s Leach said. “It’s more about passing lanes anyway. It’s better to be short and be on target than tall. There’s a ton of great quarterbacks who weren’t that big. Fran Tarkenton (6-0) did a pretty good job in the NFL. He’s a Hall of Famer. A guy named Doug Flutie did a pretty good job, too.”

The top three passers in the Big 12 — and nine of the top 10 — are back. All but two of those quarterbacks completed more than 60 percent of their throws. Of the returnees, only Oklahoma State’s Zac Robinson threw for fewer than 3,000 yards last season. Before you think about discounting Robinson, consider that only two quarterbacks in college football last year ran for at least 800 yards and threw for more than 2,800 yards. The other? Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.

As Colorado’s Dan Hawkins said of his quarterbacking son Tuesday, “Cody might be the 12th-best quarterback in the conference, the 15th-best quarterback nationally. That shows you how many good players we have at quarterback in this league.”

  416. Garret July 22, 2008 9:39 pm

It is *really* sad to read about this former blue-chip recruit. His career in D-IA football is over when he had his pick of BCS schools (LSU, Auburn, Tenn, etc.). He’s from New Orleans and after his Aunt and 2 brothers died in Katrina he understandably fell apart academically…

In April, Jackson (Miss.) State announced it signed Horton for the ’07 season. Somehow, after a year and a half at Auburn, Horton was academically ineligible to enroll at JSU, a Playoff Subdivision (formerly D-IA) school.

  417. Garret July 22, 2008 9:41 pm

Great to hear about Kimo! QB to DE transition will take some adjusting, but Mack is a great judge of talent and I’m sure he’ll fit into UH’s defensive system.

Texas approved a $4.93 bil project for wind power. Texas is already the state that generates the most power via wind and they will pass Germany after this project is completed.

  420. Garret July 22, 2008 9:44 pm

Interesting to read about Republican billionaire (and huge Oklahoma State supporter) Pickens’ plan to reduce the US dependence on foreign oil–he’s strongly in favor of natural gas use for large vehicles. He’s also advocating a big increase in wind power, and he’s put a lot of money behind wind power (his company is spending between $6 and $10 billion on a huge wind farm in Texas).

  421. Garret July 22, 2008 9:45 pm

Pickens also says that Bush’s push for off shore drilling is not the answer to the energy needs of the US. Pretty interesting because Pickens made most of his money on oil, but now he says we need a push for wind power since we can’t get enough oil no matter how many places we drill.

OWER CAMPUS VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROJECTS UPDATE:

Teri Chang, Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities in charge of all the Lower Campus sports venues as well as the Athletic Department’s office and classroom buildings, called today to talk about upcoming UH Manoa service projects.

The first one to be held in August will be in-house only as a team or spirit-building exercise for Athletic Department staff members to help launch the 2008 – 2009 academic year and to support the first three sports in the new season – football, women’s soccer & women’s volleyball.

Future workdays will be open to the larger community of UH supporters and will include a wide range of tasks & chores to be determined after the first service project has been completed.

Teri will keep Warrior Beat bloggers informed through a variety of ways. All kinds of skills will be needed.

    Rest Easy Tsaiko Ohana!

Another very productive day at the UH camp. Very electrifying to see the young athletes of the future being so intense today. Having Pride, Jesse Sapolu, and Joe Onosai there to spur these young lads on was priceless.

Doris was doing her thing today keeping the parents informed on all levels. She of course thanks all the Tsaikos who have contributed to her foundation these past few days. It has helped her tremendously.

What a rousing Ha’a and Haka exploded today near the end of the practice session. It sounded like the low rumble of an earthquake at first. The sounds of football just starting to peak. A-n-t-c-i-p-a-t-i-o-n!!

It’s quarterback and wide receiver drills. The wide receivers are running a variety of pass routes.

Santana Moss drew applause with a deep sideline grab. He remains smooth as silk.

Colt Brennan showed he can apply what he learned on the field. (Earlier the QBs worked on throwing on the run.) The rookie quarterback rolled right and threw a dart to first-year player Burl Toler.

Antwaan Randle El ran across field and pulled in a pass from first-year quarterback Derek Devine. ”

Here’s a little tidbit from the Coltster hisself:

Colt Brennan Rookie Training Camp Blog
    By Colt Brennan
    Redskins.com
    July 22, 2008

Editor’s note: rookie quarterback Colt Brennan is keeping a training camp blog for Redskins.com. Look for periodic updates to his blog through training camp and preseason:

Colt Brennan greets the fans at training camp. (Ned Dishman Photo)

    — TUESDAY, JULY 22
At training camp, I am practicing with the team for really the first time because I had hip surgery last April. It just felt good to get out there. I’ve been kind of on reserve for so long, and I finally got cleared a couple days before camp.

For me to go out there and get thrown in the mix, and to be able to go compete with everyone else, it felt great. I did some good things and some bad things, but that’s why you come out here and practice.

My hip feels good. I was anxious to see how it felt on Sunday for the first practice and it felt awesome. I wasn’t worried about the injury–it was the fact that I had not used my legs in five months. It’s just a matter of getting back to using my legs, and getting my strength back and getting my muscle memory back.

I’m playing for the No. 3 quarterback spot right now. That’s the opportunity that’s in front of me right now.

You never know when another opportunity could open up. I want to prepare myself to be a guy who can start. If there’s an injury or if there’s a situation where they call upon me, I want to be ready. I don’t want there to be an excuse, ‘Well, he’s a rookie.’ I want to prepare myself like I could be a starter, but right now I’m fighting for the No. 3 spot with Derek Devine.

I’m getting reps right now and Coach [Jim] Zorn has been great. He told me, ‘I want you to come out here and learn, but I’m going to be all over you because I want to make you a better quarterback.’ So every time I run a play or throw a pass, he’s right there and when I do bad things he’s right there. And I told him, ‘Good, because I need it.’

It’s great when a coach takes that time and effort. It means he really wants me to do well. If he just let me walk back to the huddle and didn’t say anything to me at all, I think that’s when I’d start to get worried. He has been real hands-on with me and I really appreciate it.

Coach Zorn has me focused more on technique right now. I’ve had to work on my footwork a lot. I’m playing under center again after playing in the shotgun the last couple of years at Hawaii. I’ve had to get used to it again and learn his way of doing it. He has his own way of doing it.

Coach Zorn understands that I don’t have that muscle memory right now, but a lot of times coaches are on me about exploding out and not making any false steps. It’s hard, because my legs aren’t quite ready to fire that way yet.

That’s why we’re out here. Everyone is saying how training camp is so long. Well, I love camp right now, the more work I get, the more my strength and muscle memory improves. I’ll be able to do things real quick and do things their way.

Now isn’t that the hard working, always optimistic, Hanai son we all know and love?…Go Colt!
