MPSF honors 3 Warriors

Opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft today was named to the all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s first team. Umlauft leads the country in kills, with 5.55 per set.

Left-side hitter Joshua Walker and setter Nejc Zemljak were named to the second team.

The Warriors departed this afternoon for the Mainland, where they will play UC Irvine in Saturday’s first round of the MPSF playoffs. How big of a match is this? For the first time this year, the “big bus” drove them to the Honolulu International Airport.

Head coach Greg McMackin said he expects Mouse Davis to remain as receivers coach for the 2011 season.

“He told me he’s coming back,” McMackin said. “Nothing is for sure. Everybody changes their mind every day. I’m sure it has a lot to do with what he and (his wife) Mary Lou want to do. He’s made such a contribution to our program this last year. I want him to do what’s best for him. Right now, he’s planning on coming back.”

Davis and his wife own a house in Lake Oswego, Ore. He had said he was 50-50 on returning to the Warriors.

Former UH safety Mana Silva said he felt he did well during his visit with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During the day-long visit, Silva said, he had lengthy meetings with the general manager, coaches and strength coordinators.

He did not  have to participate in workouts.

Last week, Silva met with the Oakland Raiders.

The Carolina Panthers said they were interested, but did phone interviews instead of inviting Silva for a visit.

Silva said he will remain in Hawaii until after next week’s NFL draft.

McMackin said slotback Corey Lau is no longer with the Warriors after he failed to meet unspecified team rules. Lau was a grayshirt who went on scholarship in January.

no I don’t remember. How come I wasn’t invited to Gordon Biersch. I would have been there (if I didn’t have to babysit)

gigi— you were invited, but this was almost 4 years ago…again, the defining first year of the blog. At least, I think Stretch is referring to that one. 🙂

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Gordon Biersch had enough place settings and chairs for us but not enough real estate, so they added another table at the end. Going around the table from the mauka end, the Tsai-ko Luncheon attendees were:

A-House, Tom Mui, Bob Hogue, Tracy “not our hostess” Orillo Donovan, WarriorMojo, Darren, WreckinEyez, Prideperiod, madeinhawaii & wife, Robert Kekaula, ST, Peaches, SteveM, Da Punchbowl Kid, Addahknowjoe, J, Princess Leila, and Curtis Murayama. Sorry if I missed anyone.

RK made the major announcements and ST dumped his bag of secrets on the table, which were snatched up with appropriate “ahhha”s and sly winks. Sorry, I was too busy eating to hear… 😉

My greatest regret was not attending Long Time UH Fan’s funeral. Such a nice person, who often commented on my blog and bought my 3 memoirs.

    😉 RE: #58

Having “enough place settings and chairs” but not enough table real estate had always been a problem at most Tsai-ko Cattle Calls. Usually 40% more table space and more aisle seats were required. There were many maddening arguments with managers in those days.

My dream restaurant table space negotiating team was Pride. smiling and Bulla doing the talking. 😆

  66. Garret April 21, 2011 9:39 am

  67. Garret April 21, 2011 9:40 am

I have seen every UH football game played in San Jose since I moved to the Bay Area in 1998…but my streak will be broken this year. My wife and I had planned for us to take the family to the Bay Area for the weekend of the SJSU game, but we can’t make it for a Friday game. I am absolutely sick over missing out on a chance to see the Warriors play in person, but at least I’ll get to see the UNLV game.

There is a small chance that I could fly to San Jose for a business meeting on that Friday and fly back Saturday morning…but meeting on that day wouldn’t make sense for me or my customer and I can’t just waste the government’s money or my company’s money.

So, I’m glad that UH will be on ESPN, that SJSU will get $50k extra, and that UH will have an extra day to prepare for the next game…that is more important than my selfish wish to see the game.

  68. Garret April 21, 2011 9:41 am

The Pac-12 TV rights are on the open market because Fox rejected their offer.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott asked Fox for approximately $300 million annually for the league’s broadcasting rights during the just-completed exclusive negotiating window, according to sources.

(Fox turned him down, of course, which is why the league is now on the open market).

Are Utah and Colorado, and the inventory/programming/cable households they bring, worth an extra $40.1 million?

Many industry analysts I’ve talked to are highly skeptical about the value-added that Colorado and Utah bring to the table. They believe the per-school split would have been greater without expansion.

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2011/04/20/pac-12-tv-negotiations-the-fox-deal-the-timeline-expansion-benefits-and-what-comcast-nhl-means-to-everyone/

Garrett, there was a Wall Street Journal article a few days ago suggesting that Comcast/NBC is in the hunt for the Pac-12 deal and may be willing to pay big bucks to get it. If they succeed, ESPN would be iced out from both the Pac-12 and the MWC in the west. I’m thinking that would help the WAC, at least a bit. What’s your take?

    HawaiiMongoose,

The trouble with UH benefiting from the increase in TV rights values is that the MWC’s TV contract is set until at least 2016. I’ve read multiple reports that claim that CBS has the option to extend that deal to 2020 or 2021. So, it looks like that 10-year TV deal (plus options) that the MWC signed has locked them into a below-market TV deal with no local TV rights. Pretty sad, when you consider how much success on the field the MWC had over the past 5 years.

The C-USA TV rights will be up on 2016, which means that their next TV deal will be at the same time or earlier than the MWC. If ESPN wants that contract (they tried to lowball C-USA earlier this year and Fox outbid them) they will be aggressive there.

The Big 12 TV rights that ESPN owns are up in 2016, the same time or earlier than the MWC. Those rights include the rights to a title game, which gives the Big 12 an incentive to choose teams for expansion before selling those rights. It is my opinion (based on what ADs at Texas and Oklahoma have said plus a lot of smoke with meetings and some other stuff) that BYU will be one of those teams added…that gives the Big 12 a big market in the Mountain time zone. The Big 12 would want Notre Dame or Arkansas (they will make MUCH more money than the SEC in TV in 2016 and Arkansas needs the Texas recruiting pipeline to reopen), but if ESPN says they should take a team further west they might be convinced if the $$$ is right.

So, ESPN is *not* desperate to get the WAC TV rights and they cannot get the MWC’s TV rights. If Comcast gets the Pac-12, then CBS can sell games to ESPN instead of Comcast. So, if ESPN wants to show the MWC, all they have to do is outbid Comcast for the TV rights that CBS wants to sell…and *none* of that money goes to the MWC! In other words, ESPN can pay pennies on the dollar to get MWC games if Comcast gets the Pac-12.

In summary, the following things prevent the MWC from cashing in:

    1. TV deal is locked up at below-market rates until 2016.

    2. TV deal may be extended until 2020.

    3. The Big 12’s contract will be up the same time or before the MWC’s contract…and the Big 12 can take any MWC school or BYU at any time if they want to increase their TV footprint.

    4. ESPN can save money by paying CBS for MWC games instead of trying to outbid everyone for the rights. That is ESPN’s backup option if Comcast gets the Pac-12. ESPN is not iced out of the Pac-12 if Comcast gets the Pac-12

  94. Garret April 21, 2011 1:39 pm

Edit: ESPN is not iced out of the MWC if Comcast gets the Pac-12

  95. Kazz April 21, 2011 1:44 pm

This guy Andrew Itsuno is a piece of work huh?

It appears that Itsuno needs to learn to watch what he says.

    To make a statement like:

“And, so you would have to, I guess, imagine how much alcohol you would need to drink to be able to enjoy those seats.”

Clearly, this ASUH president has no idea how to articulate himself without making the student body he represents seem like a bunch alcoholics. I’m no saint and I know what happens at college games or on a college campus, but for someone with the title of student body president of a university, he should have chosen his words carefully.

Just a prime example of weak representation on behalf of the ASUH and this statement alone does NOT help his imaginary attempt to find a legitimate “middle ground” with UHAD and the ASUH.

Nothing is more irritating and laughable when someone in a postion or a title of representation of a larger entity says something stupid.

Yep, as regrettable as it may be, with a Magic # of two for the Crusaders, it’s, “Go Puns!” today.

  104. NCAA April 21, 2011 2:33 pm

I also want to read the interview with the Punahou baseball coach after their win.

  105. jm2375 April 21, 2011 2:45 pm

d1 – grrrrrrrr. SLS & MPI are already in the state tournament. No cheering for that school with the alma mater that goes to the tune of a Christmas song.

  106. Kazz April 21, 2011 2:52 pm

    Punahou the underdog?

While we’re at it, let’s donate to the “Save Donald Trump’s Estate” fund.

curt…in the mean time i’ll wait this one out.

but i do know the subliminal messages. there are three. i admit that you are getting better, in that, quite possible the european tour was not all for not. now that there are two known prizes; the guessing game ensues.

as for the other two underlying messages…well. if you be nice about it. i just might.

I thought the Paintbrush battle and all that stuff that went with it was pau or is the Punahou bashing only carried on by the old(er) people?

You may be interested in the “rich” school vs. the “poor” school. I always thought Punahou had a high tution but I learned that MPI is just as high and Iolani will be higher than either next year!

  126. HawaiiMongoose April 21, 2011 3:46 pm

Garret, thanks for the feedback on ESPN, the PAC-12 and the MWC. It confirms what I was thinking about the MWC, which is that the conference has really shortchanged itself when it comes to its TV contract. The thing I’m still wondering is whether there’s any silver lining here for what’s left of the WAC after Hawaii leaves it, although I think the answer is implicit in your response. If ESPN can still get PAC-12 and MWC games when it wants by just buying them from Comcast and CBS, it won’t be lacking for western college football content and won’t need to spend any money on its deal with the WAC.

  127. Garret April 21, 2011 4:01 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

Exactly. ESPN will not be hurting for western college football content. Great for ESPN, not great for the WAC.

If the mtn, CBS CS, and VS games all together come to $12 mil/year for the MWC, ESPN might be able to get the MWC games that have been shown on VS for $3 mil or so…less than they have been paying the WAC. If Comcast gets the Pac-12 TV rights, they will be locked into the Pac-12 for Saturday time slots for VS, so somebody else (ESPN) will have to show the MWC games that used to be on VS.

ESPN already has BYU locked up also. ESPN could still get the Pac-12 TV rights, but if Comcast outbids them then ESPN will get the “consolation” prize of MWC games for pennies on the dollar.

  128. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 21, 2011 4:03 pm

and pennies we shall gladly take.

  129. Stephen Tsai April 21, 2011 4:09 pm

The one thing I’ve learned through the years is kids don’t have long memories.

Sometimes reporters will ask players about rivalries, and the player will say: “My parents used to talk about that.”

We’re dealing with UH players who don’t remember Rolo as a quarterback, who have vague memories of Tim Chang.

So if you’re an MPI junior, and people tell you how great it is to end Punahou’s dynasty, you’ll say: I only lost to them twice, and I didn’t even play as a freshman.

Adults have the benefit of seeing the big picture.

    Kids think nostalgia is MySpace.

  130. Stephen Tsai April 21, 2011 4:19 pm

And if I were in charge of settling this student-seating mess, I’d give the student the first two rows on the UH side of the field. I think only redshirts and players’ friends/family use those seats.

Or if I’m the AD, I’d wait two weeks when the ASUH president’s term expires.

Trouble with the prez is that he had the negotiating power before the student fees were implemented. That’s when he should have struck a deal. It’s too late now. He can’t revoke the fees because they were imposed by the Board of Regents, not the students. And, in fact, polling the students was just a goodwill gesture, anyway. Students don’t have any juice, just like they don’t have any decision on the tuition rate. And now that the prez is graduating, he’ll be on the other side. He’ll want a shot at the good seats.

If you’re a student and you want to protest, pay the fees in pennies.

Hold up signs of protest during nationally televised events.

But to try to get a settlement now, lotsa luck.

  131. mctrruck April 21, 2011 4:20 pm

Is there a MOUSE in da house???

  132. Stephen Tsai April 21, 2011 4:25 pm

    If I were a student again …

Full-time students don’t pay ala carte. So take as many classes as you want. (Preferably ones with the fewest books.)

Sign up for intramural events. You’re paying for it, anyway.

Go to a sporting event. Again, you’re paying for it.

Run for an ASUH seat. Few people run, and less than 20 percent of the student body votes. It’ll look good on your resume.

Treat the school like your personal gym. Weight rooms are open to students. And if you’ve got a lookalike, and we all do, slip him your student ID.

    Nailed it on the ad!!!!!

You don’t see much hostage situations where the perp is negotiating for his plane and $10M into a swiss account while hes in handcuffs in a holding cell.

The time and writing on the wall was when the issue came up…instead of bickering around NOT wanting the student fees way back when, they should have negotiated a better deal on what they would get for it. Put the onus on UHAD to come up with a “meet me in the middle” plan.

    Say WHAT???

#9th best Non-AQ school is nice, but I’m referring to the last part of the paragraph:

    9. Hawaii

Why it’s successful: It starts with the quality of high school football on the islands, and how passion for football is engrained in the Samoan community.

Future prospects: Hawaii has persevered through losing the school’s greatest coach (June Jones) and the implosion of the WAC. Its future may eventually be more secure as an independent.

  142. Kazz April 21, 2011 6:14 pm

    IWWTHM,

That’s what happens when you are not fully prepared to accept the responsibilities of your position.

But hey like I said, the guy is almost on his way out, got a nice college imprint that says he was the ASUH President and he can move on.

Now that’s how you “USE” the system to your advantage only and not to the benefit of those you are supposed to represent.

  143. Kazz April 21, 2011 6:16 pm

Wannabe “rebel-rousers” are as useless as the idealism they dream about and never do anything to actually make it happen.

  150. Garret April 21, 2011 7:52 pm

and pennies we shall gladly take.

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

UH won’t get a single penny from CBS, Comcast, or ESPN for the MWC’s TV deal. The deal that the Star-Advertiser reported on was that UH offered to take $0 from the MWC TV deal if UH could keep its PPV.

If the MWC cannot renegotiate their contract until 2016 or 2020, that means that UH won’t get a single penny of the MWC’s TV money until then if UH can keep PPV. The option is for UH to get a share of the MWC’s TV deal and lose PPV…but that would make UH get even less money.

2010 TV money: About $3 mil (PPV plus UH’s share of the WAC’s TV money)

2011 TV money: About $2.6 mil (If the WAC’s TV deal is cut like what has been projected)

2012 TV money: About $2.4 mil (PPV) or about $1 mil (UH’s share of the MWC’s TV money)

  151. Garret April 21, 2011 7:55 pm

Momo asked me if I was going to mention that Arakawa was one of my cousins…It seems amazing to me that he’s playing for UH since I remember talking with him years ago about his interest in baseball and hearing how he was talented as he was growing up. It is nice to have an extra rooting interest for the baseball team.

  152. Garret April 21, 2011 7:59 pm

Even before reading the article today, when I saw the headline about the students wanting better seats I immediately thought that if the students want better seats they need to make the student fee much bigger. I think that JD made a rational response to the demands of ASUH.

The student fee is WAY TOO LOW, and I said that even before UH made it official. UH’s students are getting off *very* cheaply, and they are getting better seats than students are getting at many other schools that charge higher student fees.

  153. Garret April 21, 2011 8:03 pm

Utah State students were paying a $60/semester athletic fee and they voted *for* the fee to be doubled to $120/semester…and they aren’t complaining about their seats.

  154. Kazz via iPad on VZW April 21, 2011 8:08 pm

Im already loving the OC16 coverage. Light years ahead of their coverage with UH sports.

Cameras are quick to the action, can see how fast the pitchers are throwing, etc…

Oc16’s coverage of OIA softball is Emmy Award winning compared to how K-5 covers UH softball.

  157. Garret April 21, 2011 8:19 pm

At UT-Austin, the Athletic Fee is optional and just $40 per semester. However, even though they set aside tens of thousands of seats in the football stadium for the students, tickets can run out (especially for the better sections). Students who want to have a reserved seat for each football game buy a “student season ticket” that costs $150 per person for the home games in a football season. The earlier a student pays the $150 (which is in addition to the Athletic fee), the better their reserved seat is. But students who are die-hards do not need to pay extra, they just camp out for tickets and get good seats (except for the Oklahoma/Texas A&M games).

Student pick up the tickets for each game the week of the game. Tickets that are not claimed by the students are put on sale to the general public 3 days before the game and are sold at full price (what everybody else pays, much more than the $40/semester fee the student’s pay).

  158. Garret April 21, 2011 8:21 pm

Students at San Diego State pay $350/year for their Athletic fee…they don’t show up for football games much but they do pack the basketball arena.

As we look at the “Top 20” posts of today, here’s a snapshot of “Firsts” in the past… 🙂

On these days in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog, the blog is slowly picking up momentum again as more of the old crew return to action. Some still stare warily at the full moon tethered to the blogship mast. 😉

Here’s a look at the “firsts” since April 9. Note there were multiple blog entries by ST on some days. Note the date/time stamps…

Jim Leahey wanted to be first, but he can’t decide on an online name.

    I suggested: Jim Leahey.

He said: “No, no. Not that.”

    You get the picture.

By the time he figures it out, we’re in the 30s.

But he’ll always be No. 1 among our sportscaster friends.

OK, maybe tied with Mr. Salmon.

I think we should get the students tickets to the side facing the cameras. You know how much students like to be on TV. It also looks good when the energetic side is on TV, it makes it seem like everybody is cheering for the home team.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
