Match night: Harvard

Stijn van Tilburg and his parents
Stijn van Tilburg and his parents

The volleyball Warriors were overpowering in their season-opening sweep of King last night.

Each of the scores was 25-14. King managed only six natural points, including one in the final set. And Stijn van Tilburg had a memorable debut, with a 14-0-15 line. The Warrior also mixed it up a few times, with setter Jennings Franciskovic blocking middle and middle Hendrik Mol at the pin.

For the Warriors, it gets a little tougher tonight against Harvard. But the Crimson brought only 10 players to the island; teams are allowed to suit up 14.

King and Lewis meet at 4 p.m.; UH and Harvard play at 7 p.m.

None of the tournament’s matches will be televised.

Running back/slotback Samson Anguay has been granted a sixth year of eligibility.

Anguay, who earned a bachelor’s degree last month, delayed applying for post-graduate studies while awaiting the NCAA’s ruling. He said he probably will not be able to rejoin the Warriors until after the spring semester.

any players on official visit this weekend?

  2. cheepono January 8, 2016 8:57 am

I know ST is the beat writer for both volleyball and football, so the description on the main page of the Warrior Beat should be updated so people don’t assume it’s always about football. Seems like comments and I’m guessing overall hit count takes a big decline when the posts aren’t football related. Just my 2 cents.

Current description: “Expanded coverage of UH football, including practice notes, game analysis, recruiting info and observations on the Mountain West Conference.”

  3. Stephen Tsai January 8, 2016 9:12 am

The dead period runs another week, so recruiting weekends are Jan. 15-17, Jan. 22-24, and Jan. 29-31.
The final weekend should be loaded with local prospects.

  4. Stephen Tsai January 8, 2016 9:14 am

There was a receiver who just chose a Mountain West school known for running. Hmm. If I were him, I would have really considered the UH offer or, at least, take the recruiting trip.

  5. Stephen Tsai January 8, 2016 9:16 am

It will be a slow weekend, anyway, because the national convention is being held. Hopefully, some of the former coaches — Bailey, Mason, Matthews, and Samuseva — can land jobs. It’s a tough business and a tight job market.

  6. H-Man January 8, 2016 9:18 am

Still in the dead period, but you raise the question we’re all thinking – What’s happening with recruiting? Other than DE Muti (Leilehua), I don’t think we have a commit on either the O or D-line.

  7. Stephen Tsai January 8, 2016 9:24 am

    H-Man:
There are two offers out to O-tackles.
They also are nearing commit from a 6-4, 290-pound d-lineman.

  8. jeezy33 January 8, 2016 9:27 am

    6. Ulu Perry is considered a part of the 2016 class. 3 good looking Arizona prospects on O line have been offered. If Hawaii gets 1, that’s a win. 1 of them is the O lineman of the year in the state and might come down to Memphis or Hawaii unless a bigger school jumps in. 2 kids from Samoa played last night at Aloha Stadium who have been offered. Iverson Moala and Viane Moala. Moala supposedly is a monster.
A few JC linemen I know are being touted. But like always, grades can be tricky with JC kids.

The bait is out, just need a few bites so we can get the hanapaa alert.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Stijn played like a veteran last night. I was impressed with his shot selection. He wasn’t just slamming it down like some freshman are apt to do.
BTW, his parents arrived last night in time to see the last game.

King U was definitely out-classed last night. Harvard will be a better test tonight.

Come on down to the SSC to watch #WarriorBall – no TV.

Gotta go get my free Jumbo Jack.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  10. Derek January 8, 2016 9:59 am

ST, would like to have a complete run down of all the gray shirts, blue shirts, and other shirts besides the ones signing in Feb. much mahalo.

  11. H-Man January 8, 2016 10:43 am

ST and jeezy, thank you for the update. As usual, I am always anxious when it comes to recruiting, so its good to know that the lines are baited and getting a nibble from a d-lineman.

  12. SteveM January 8, 2016 11:06 am

    Good morning everyone!

The blog host can write anything he wishes but is known to limit himself to “warrior” (men) versus “wahine”and stays on his assigned beats unless there was an interesting story/incident. Football “dead period” is football dead period…it’s actually been mostly dead for several years.

  13. Boolakanaka January 8, 2016 11:30 am

Jeezy is right–FUP (Ulu-Perry) sets the standard for the recruiting class, and I predict will create some nice momentum for the remaining portion of the recruiting season–holomua!

  14. NorthShoreFan January 8, 2016 11:34 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
Good job Samson! This is what it’s all about. Get the most out of the opportunity. Hope to see you on the field.
I like the content of the blog. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, makes for an interesting visit to the site. Football, volleyball, softball, baseball, they all WARRIORS on HAWAII WARRIOR WORLD!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  15. NorthShoreFan January 8, 2016 11:36 am

Bruddha Boo….Hoping and praying this happens. would love to see the “boyz” come out and represent/defend the ROCK!

  18. kapakahi January 8, 2016 4:20 pm

    #4,

    Wilson?

  19. MAKA January 8, 2016 5:59 pm

Yea, good mix. Now if Legislature give us more daily wisdom, it be great and awesome.

  20. Jeezy33 January 8, 2016 6:10 pm

    18. He’s referring to Jordan Chin. Going to SDSU when they rarely pass

  21. Abunai January 8, 2016 7:15 pm

ST? Any information about the 2 Samoan kids that played last night at aloha stadium?

  22. papajoe2 January 8, 2016 7:38 pm

I was wondering why there is very little or no coverage of the all-star football game last night. Also, I thought anyone that plays in an all-star game must have completed their high school eligibility or forfeit there remaining eligibility (juniors). They must have changed the rules…..I hope.

  23. cheepono January 8, 2016 8:14 pm

hanapaaaaaa one of the Samoan kids must’ve just commit.

  24. 3-Prong January 8, 2016 8:18 pm

jm2375, so does this Stijn look like the terminator any top tier team needs to be a playoff team?

  25. Jeezy33 January 8, 2016 8:50 pm

If Moala just committed, that be huge.

  26. al January 8, 2016 8:51 pm

18…Wilson, a mid year aka gray shirt has signed his letter of intent and should be in classes this Monday.

  27. Jeezy33 January 8, 2016 9:03 pm

    26. He was referring to adarius wilson who decommitted fro, Hawaii earlier and committed to San Jose.

  28. PONO January 8, 2016 9:47 pm

#passport recruit must be a American Samoa recruit.

  29. jm2375 January 8, 2016 10:14 pm

3-prong – Stijn was terminating again tonight. I think, in my not-so-expert opinion, that he’s better than Jonas Umlauft was this early in his career.

Warriors finally started setting the middles in Game 3. Hope to see a lot more of that soon.

Another sweep, another Jumbo Jack. 😆

When OC-16 took over the televising of Hawaii athletics, I was hoping they would expand coverage by going on the road with the men and women’s basketball teams, and also Mike Trapasso’s squad.

Gone are the days when K5 would televise two events in a day, like baseball and basketball.

I have zero interest in watching a men’s volleyball match, but it irritates me that OC-16 chose not to broadcast these games, because I know how I feel when they bypass baseball, softball, or women’s basketball.

I understand the de-emphasis on softball coverage, since nobody is going to watch an average team, but didn’t men’s volleyball make the post-season last season?

  31. H-Man January 9, 2016 6:22 am

I enjoy going to the RWSS to watch the softball games. No problem with parking on weekends. The Wahine will be good this season. Looking forward to this season to see how the new players perform and enjoying the chili-dog.

  32. 3-Prong January 9, 2016 7:54 am

jm2375, wow better than Umlauft is pretty dang good. I noticed you didn’t compare him to UV Katz though. Lmk after he goes up against the Lewis block. Thanks…

  33. DaveLetterMan January 9, 2016 9:04 am

Kaimana Padello – Mililani High offered preferred walk-on to UH

  34. Bryson January 9, 2016 10:50 am
