Manoa makeover

Sure, the Warriors are in a slump, and not only because of the narrow loss to San Jose State. There are questions about its pay-per-view future. So, after a nap on the armchair, here are some thoughts:

Television: The thing is, the sports channels are over-saturated with, well, sports. What the Warriors should do is explore other networks, like MTV, VH1, HBO or Discovery. Sign up with one of those networks, then open the doors, allowing the cameras to follow the players/coaches/administrators throughout the week. Then the network could have a weekly (or daily) show on the behind-the-stories. On weekends, the network could show a UH game, and if the national rights are held by someone else, then just highlights of the game. The format isn’t unique; HBO has had success with “Hard Knocks,” and MTV did well with “Two-A-Days.” Such a deal would give the Warriors national exposure, some money, boost recruiting, show UH’s diversity (Scott Harding, Alex Dunnachie, Joey Iosefa, etc.) and, let’s face it, Cayman Shutter, Billy Ray Stutzmann and Mouse Davis have reality-star names.

Publicity: It’s a crowded market, and UH doesn’t have the money to compete with the BCS schools’ publicity machines. Instead of starting campaigns in the summer, launch videos on the Web site during the offseason. That’s when people are starved for football, and even a training video would produce hits and some attention.

Clinics: The Warriors have done a great job of  bringing in coaches for peer-sharing discussions during the offseason. Why not do that during the season? Maybe the Warriors can ask former coaches to review videos of the first six games, and offer suggestions. The coaching staff certainly has enough contacts. And fresh eyes can offer a different perspective.

Pep talk: By all accounts, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti gave a rousing halftime speech. As sportscaster Robert Kekaula suggested: Why not let Tuioti make the pregame speech?

During today’s WAC teleconference, UH’s Greg McMackin vowed to correct the problems that have led to six blocked kicks this season, including two by San Jose State.

“We’re not going to have any more blocked PATs or field goals,” McMackin said. “We’re going to change personnel. We’re going to interlock (on protection), and do some technical things that are going to help us.”

    Yes!

    Go, Warriors!

    Go, Wahine!!

    Howzit, everyone!

Is it *play nice day* already?

  5. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:04 am

    Sure, play nice.

NMSU coach said it will allow Andrew Manley (who’s out for the year with an injury) to make the trip. He’ll serve as a student assistant, charting plays, etc.

    Money money money….

    Sigh…

I give credit to Coach Mack. He teaches the kids to respond on a deeper level.

The bodies will follow the spirit. Getting to a unified spirit is the true victory in this ego-driven world.

    Before, during and after football.

    GO WARRIORS

  8. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:09 am

    Thanks, ST!

One thing we’re never short of is great outside thinking. Do we need to form a committee to study the feasibility of forming a committee to look at these, and the many previously submitted, great ideas?

  9. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:10 am

    Sure, play nice.

For some reason, that simple statement got me laughing, after all that’s been said here over the weekend.

  13. haka October 17, 2011 7:12 am

It’s like de ja vu all over again from last year. Still lot’s of football to look forward to. It’s homecoming and I would like to see a sold out stadium on Saturday. Dreaming? Well, if the fans want the team to do well, they will support them in spirit and in the seats. That’s how you build a successful program!

    Go Warriors!

ST- That’s the kinda vision I’m talking about!!

You shared this with Inouchi yet?

  18. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:15 am

    Wes’side:

I don’t try to tell people how to think. I just try to encourage them to be civil.

    It’s OK to be angry.

Which is why they invented the Call the Coach show.

It’s always good to look at different options.

Look at a map. We’re over here, and the mainland is way, way over there. UH needs a reason to have others pay attention.

  19. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:19 am

Isn’t the Hawaii Five-0 viewing party an extension of readers’ suggestion that UH road football games should be shown at the SSC?

A Time magazine article on Steve Jobs said his gift was in improving and advancing other companies’ ideas.

  20. uhfan09 October 17, 2011 7:24 am

By assuring us no more block fg and pat will they go for 2pt conversions. But first just try scoring more TD’S and coach mack please make better decisions.

  21. haka October 17, 2011 7:25 am

    On playing nice….

I hate to think what the destructive criticism and finger pointing that goes on after a loss by the fans would do if it were like that in the locker room and on the field. For many, the best way to alleviate their pain is to kick the dog. Sure, there are questions to be asked and things to be remedied, but the volatile nature of most of the fans responses I see are what brings down the program. IMO

  22. Bwhaha October 17, 2011 7:25 am

“We’re not going to have any more blocked PATs or field goals,” McMackin said.

Don’t make promises you can’t keep

  23. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:26 am

    True, ST.

Before I forget… sorry, Ronnie! Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a blast yesterday!

Going back to your thoughts… Are we restricted to only the PR people that are allowed to talk with people like MTV, , HBO, Discovery, etc.? Perhaps someone can approach Discovery and get a grant to study the effects of so much travel on our student athletes on an annual basis, and how it affects performance, their brains, etc. I mean, I don’t think anyone travels as much as we do on an annual basis. And a show like that would enjoy aired reruns too.

  24. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:30 am

Of course, we’d also have to include ‘ohana and the aloha spirit as positives to help offset so much travel. Gotta take a look at physical as well as psychological angles.

  25. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:30 am

The other thing Id like to see is that everyone involved in Gib Arnold’s contract, including the silent people of influence, get in a room, with Arnold, and just explain the issues that need to be resolved before the contract is finalized. Let’s be adults about this. If there are obstacles that need to be cleared, explain them, then work on it. Everyone is supposed to be partners in this. Don’t care for these sneaky talk-stink, back-room subplots. We’re not in middle school.

  26. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:32 am

Doing such a public show would even bring up the Alaska/Hawaii exemption, and the need for that BYE week, to catch up on school and healing.

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2011 7:33 am

    Fans here should play nice.

Warriors should play like there’s no tomorrow! We believe in you!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  28. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:34 am

    Wes’side:

    You are correct.

One of the stations (maybe even Oceanic?) should do a Hawaii version of a sports-science show.

There could be shows on travel, such as the proper amount of sleep and whether it is better to stay on Hawaii time or adjust to new city’s time.

Or the effects of altitude on an athlete and the ball.

Or the optimum age of an administrator. Is there a creative pinnacle for a marketing director or media relations director?

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2011 7:35 am

    Top Thirty!

    Eeeeyayyy!

  30. Shoko October 17, 2011 7:36 am

Aside from networks such as MTV, VH1, HBO or Discovery, how about including the travel Channel or Food Network. Tsaiko’s like to eat right? Perhaps Guy Fieri would do a tailgate challenge like he does with NFL fans.

  31. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:36 am

Fo, realz! Gotta take care of Coach Gib too, before he bolts.

We are in our final WAC year. We’re heading into new territory next year. Everything needs to be finalized as soon as possible. Just throwing that out there *again*… just in case some of the negotiators didn’t know.

  32. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:37 am

    Shoko:

    You have some great ideas.

Most of all, UH needs to be unique.

  33. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:38 am

Or the optimum age of an administrator. Is there a creative pinnacle for a marketing director or media relations director?

    Hahahaha!

Aside from networks such as MTV, VH1, HBO or Discovery, how about including the travel Channel or Food Network. Tsaiko’s like to eat right?

    Double Hahahaha!!

  34. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:42 am

Wait, doesn’t UH have some media classes? Maybe they should be the ones to do these shows, then approach those national networks with their finished product. And apply for whatever research grants we need to get these various studies done. Push our research numbers up!!! Along with more exposure!

  35. Slugger October 17, 2011 7:43 am

ST ~ Have Tommy Heffernan go over workouts to stay in shape. Would be cool to see what keeps the players in shape. I wouldn’t be able to emulate even 10% of what they do, but maybe the core exercises. Tsaikos could use that info. 🙂

  36. Slugger October 17, 2011 7:45 am

    Wes’side Warrior,

You’re right. UH has a Center for Creative Media that could assist with the production. And give the students real-time experience. Helps to build their resume.

  37. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:45 am

    Also:

    • For senior night, clear the way, and let each senior make a short statement. And lose the hand-shaking ceremony. New rule: senior night can’t be when somebody shakes a senior’s hand for the first time.

    • Give out the plaques at the team banquet the next night.

    • No announcers on the field. For once it would be nice to see the Warriors run onto the field without having to avoid an announcer. Golf and sumo announcers have proven you don’t need to be in the same room (venue?) to be heard.

  38. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2011 7:48 am

    Wes’side:

UH has a lot of resources.

    It has a film school.

A school of travel industry management (and, once again, TIM really should have its own on-campus hotel).

    Theater program.

I think there’s a school of fashion design (which is part of the ag department).

  39. Wes'side Warrior October 17, 2011 7:49 am

    Yes, Slugger!

    Yes, ST!

We’re moving in the right direction!!!

  40. Last Call October 17, 2011 7:52 am

Why hasn’t Vega’s put up a line for the UH game is it because they think New Mexico State is an FCS school ?

  41. Shoko October 17, 2011 7:55 am

I’m thinking that the spread would put the Warriors as 10-point favorites against NMSU.

WW ~ Speaking of Media classes. How about a special on the life and times of our Blogmeister? C’mon Media Director, show a little respect to the man who makes your job so easy.

For over 20 years, ST has been bringing us the inside information on the Warrior team. No other reporter or reporterette comes close to his in-depth stories. He has learned to adapt to becoming a better than average photo-journalist along the way. This has greatly enhanced the Warrior Beat, especially leading up to game day.

Thru rain, sleet, and dark of night…well you get the idea! As Rainbow Cliff would say, “Mahalo for your greatness, ST!”

  45. CoolEthan October 17, 2011 8:03 am

Wouldn’t a slump be considered a personal issue with consistency of not performing well? But they bounced back and beat Davis and LaTech.

Let’s not defer issue, as pointing to a slump is not taking responsibilty.

Still believe this is a coaching issue and lack of proper discipline.

The fact is both of the recent losses were handed to the other team.

  46. Shoko October 17, 2011 8:03 am

21.5 is a little high, in my opinion. But the again, the Warriors always covered the spread and then some when they play at home. This is a tough one. Might have to stay away from including this game on a parlay.

  47. CoolEthan October 17, 2011 8:03 am

..By allowing the other team to win.

I’m in a slump with each early morning.

Once the Java kicks, buh-bye to the slump

  59. Bleed Green and White October 17, 2011 8:22 am

    Mr. Tsai –

Wow, wide range of points this morning, I love it.

My two cents. In an effort to draw more fans, to rally interest locally, to make the football program relevant once again, may I suggest to school lower ticket prices.

I mean the insertion of “premium” pricing for good seats came at a time when the economy was booming, not that it’s well, not booming anymore, the high price drives away so many fans.

Wouldn’t it be nice again to see Aloha Stadium packed for every game? I mean 50,000 fans at an affordable price is much better than 25,000 at an astronomical price right? Plus, everybody’s a winner with a sell out, parking, food, drink etc.

And since we’re on the subject, how dare they charge more for higher quality opponents but don’t reduce the price for, say, UC Davis for example. Or for the home team for that matter (when they’re sub-par I mean).

  60. mokumanu October 17, 2011 8:23 am

Whatever the problems, whatever the solutions and support, you still have to win on the road. Hawaii has an advantage because it is Hawaii and curiosity is a factor for the mainland crowds (well, use to be) and the team travels so far to play. But winning on the road is the best publicity for the university and always will be. Perhaps, that alone deserves special focus in the overall scheme of football at the UH. Do well and more than Hawaii will follow, I think. Chin up, Warriors.

  61. Kekoa October 17, 2011 8:29 am

Not sure if Officer ‘C’ is treating me as a Person of Interest, or a Prime Suspect. Nah, j/k!

He stopped by da hale in an official capacity while investigating an incident on our street the other night. Nothing dramatic enuff to be considered of “5-0” quality.

  62. madeinhawaii October 17, 2011 8:42 am

If we lose PPV, move the games back to 7:00 or 7:30 pm.. shoots move it to 8:00 pm. That will give everyone ample time to get to the stadium… and give our Warriors an advantage over their opponents as it will be past all of their bed times.

  63. Kevin October 17, 2011 8:44 am

I hope they did a test run at the arena for the Five O showing tonight.

Obviously not for the image quality, but for the audio. The PA itself is louder than before, but clarity and volume are two different things and Five-O, like all TV dramas, are driven by dialogue. Plus the audiofeed coming from KGMB will play a factor as well. Again, a live mic is different that an audiofeed that has already been mixed in post production for a TV show. The subsequent echo in a venue as large as the SSC will also have an effect if the dialogue between the characters are low in tone like two people talking one on one.

I’m not sure how their amp or sound mixer works up there, but maybe they might want to consider taking as much bass and “mid” out of the PA system mixing board for the showing.

    Hope it works out.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile a lot more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

    Garret:

Didn’t get a chance to thank you for your response two days ago. I finally found it and got around to reading it.

    Me:

In what sense is/are UH’s academics lacking?

Can you provide some examples/insight? Thanks

    Garret:

UH does have good Academics and does a decent amount of research, which brings in good faculty and all of those research grants bring money into the state. All very positive things. I am *not* criticizing UH’s academics…I am criticizing the *direction* of UH’s Upper Campus priorities.

Boise State is adding PhD programs, building new buildings for Academics, upgrading their faculty, and maintaining all of their Academic facilities. Their direction is clearly upwards and they are continually bringing in more money to upgrade their Academic side.

UH is cutting budgets, cutting classes so students cannot take classes they need to graduate on time, doing a horrible job of maintaining Academic facilities (dorms not taken care of, roofs leaking, labs not maintained), and have the students worried about the huge tuition increase that is coming. The message to the faculty and students are that budget cuts will reduce what they currently have for Academics, tuition increases will squeeze the students and drive some away, and the Academic facilities weren’t maintained well before the budget cuts so I hate to see how well things are maintained in the future.

I have heard some pretty depressing things from UH faculty. Lots of people see what is happening with Hawaii’s budget situation and see the pain the budget cuts and tuition increases will cause. Does that indicate a positive direction?

Garret/mih – #85 – as a case in point, in a matter close to my heart – it’s been over 5 years since the Elementary School building on the UHS campus was destroyed by fire. To date, I have not heard of any plans to replace the building. There are now 4 “portables” in it’s place…

The rennovations to Johnson Hall and another student housing structure must be from funds allocated prior to some recent cuts as well as the funds feeding the project currently at campus center which will essentially provide a new large addition to the current building.

Not sure when the two housing/dorms will be finished, but the new Campus Center should be up and functional in the fall of 2012.

Campus Center looks like a mess right now with all the blocked off areas and construction equipment.

Friend of mine took his family to visit Seattle. His kids (elementary to middle school) were very impressed with the UW campus. Beautiful summer day with the fountain shooting water in the air with Mount Rannier in the background. There was an event going on outside the HUB (student union bldg) for “future Huskies”. One of the event people told my friend’s daughters to get in line for free cake and ice cream. That was a few years ago, and now my friend’s kids want to go to UW.

When my friend and his kids take walks to the UH Manoa campus, the youngest one always ask him, “why is the UH fountain always broken?”

On the other hand, UH is making an effort to improve things at Manoa with the new Campus Center addition, new dorm (Frear Hall), and renovations of Johnson Hall. On the Big Island, they have a new Student Life Center and are building a new bookstore.

@Steven Tsai. Great points about the film school. They must also have the IT school on campus. Put the two forces together to create INTERNSHIP programs. That is what one of my kids did one summer. Work with the film school kids, then they created websites, and other content for PR. And by INTERNSHIP they got paid nothing. Kids here on the mainland are happy to just have it on their resume. Helps to find work in the hard times we are in.

Excellent point!!! Use students and work together like here on the mainland.

If Govt wanted to create jobs, they should improve the public/state/charter school facilities. That would put a lot of people to work.. and improved facilities might just help improve the mindset of our public school students, as well.

Insofar as getting students involved and working together.. good luck getting that through the unions. Free labor when there are unemployed union workers? HAH…

  103. PolyMom October 17, 2011 12:55 pm

Regarding the reality show idea of following the Coaches, Players. My husband explored that years ago. The show runners could only find one network that was interested in doing that…one of the ESPN brands. But they wanted to pay so little for the show, there was no money for anyone. Reality television can work for you or against you. The network decides which way to take it. Not the Producer. Thus, it could be a bad thing if they only want edited material and content that makes folks look stupid.

But you would think some kids in the film school…could get permission to shoot film and start with a YouTube channel. There is POWER on YouTube. Just got back from a weekend conference all about YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Incredible marketing tools.

I know no one wants to re-visit the game (I certainly don’t), but I was talking to my coworker last night and he said something that made me question why he was working in the food service industry and not coaching football IMO.

UH 27 SJSU 20 after the Joey Iosefa TD run. With one blocked kick already why not go for the 2 point conversion. If UH converts its a 2 possesion lead. If UH fails its still a 7 point lead. And with the momentum clearly with UH at this point in the game why not? Especially after the UW game and one kick blocked already that night.

On another note, in the replay of the SJSU player returning it to the house it appeared that Shane Austin was looking for a holding penalty instead of running down the player and throwing his *ss to the turf.

Maybe our games are just not meant to be shown to a national audience and are only meant for the people of Hawaii to enjoy.

To be world class we need world class industries in the islands. Tourism was good till the mid nineties.

What will be engine that drives the economy? Government service does not generate revenue

U.H. Pearl Harbor, they are money spenders. What else is there in the islands?

There is a lot small/niche industries that have a lot of potential especially here on the Big Island

but it will all take a lot of work

There is nothing like Nike,Oregon; Microsoft,Washington, to input into the athletic program.

What can we export to generate billions in revenue?

When we find that new thing ;things will pick up

We need a product that caters to personal consumption; the researchers we have need to focus

beyond Ipods and Facebook. Look for something more real.

  110. wait a minute October 17, 2011 2:28 pm

That argument is flawed, because at that point no kicks had been blocked

  111. Stretch October 17, 2011 2:37 pm

Sats – I heard a caller this morning say the same thing. That was the first blocked kick of the game.

The extra point “supposed” to be an automatic. If they converted, it would have been an 8 point lead and SJSU would have to score a TD and 2 point conversion.

  112. Sats October 17, 2011 2:40 pm

    wait a minute

Yes, you are correct. Omit the part of having one blocked already to unflaw the thought. BUT keep in mind that every XP/FG attempt is an adventure with our team and with what happened at UW I still think that the possibility to push it to a 2 possession game instead of a 1 score is a justifiable reason.

I am not a football coach and neither is my coworker. Just found is thinking interesting

  113. Stretch October 17, 2011 2:44 pm

Kenton Chun already kicked 3 extra points, why would you think they would block the 4th?

  114. Buffoman October 17, 2011 2:51 pm

    #113

Because it looked like they were getting closer and closer to actually blocking one? In the other games that’s what it looked like to a blocked kick. Practice made perfect for them (all of them who successfully blocked us) when it counted.

  115. bigislandkurt October 17, 2011 2:55 pm

Old school Dave….that is not a new student center at UH-Hilo….it’s a student services building. This is where offices like admissions, advising, financial aid, and counseling will be in. A virtual one-stop-shop for student services.

A student center, which typically serves as the “quad” or hub/gathering place for students is still called the campus center. The most recent addition to this campus center is the new bookstore scheduled to open by next school year.

The next big construction project will be the behemoth Hawaiian Language college building….and then soon after, the college of Pharmacy — which will be equally huge.

    BIK

  116. Ralph October 17, 2011 3:00 pm

Winning and on a roll, Na Wahine soccer is in first place with a 3-1-1 WAC record and Utah State trailing by a half a game at 3-1. UH final two games are on the road, Las Cruces and Ruston, before commencing WAC tournament play.

Fresno will host the WAC first round, semis and finals. Fresno is in 4th place at 2-1 with 4 games remaining.

  117. Sats October 17, 2011 3:03 pm

    Stretch

I don’t think my friend meant that he knew the 4th XP attempt would be blocked, nobody could’ve known that, I think he was just referring to our kicking game this season which has been very shaky and inconsistent. But, I think your missing the key point which was the chance to make it a 2 possession game instead of 1.

Yes, if they made the XP SJSU would have to score a TD and convert a 2 point conversion in order to tie. However if UH made the 2 point converstion SJSU would have to score a TD and than get the ball again and score again to win.

But like A-House said “that would be “thinking outside the box” – to inventive – to bold.

ya gotta remember the “stay in the same mold” mentality.”

Which I agree with, go big or go home is not always the luxury a head coach can have and our team went with the conventional wisdom of going for something “automatic” and making it difficult/but still possible to tie the game. Where the possibility of putting it almost out of reach was there.

  118. Ralph October 17, 2011 3:06 pm

Chee, now that you put it that way, you’re right we should have given stronger consideration for going for 2. Nice thinking outside the box, given all of the circumstances. Maybe that one just escaped the coaches at the moment.

  120. Warrior Expat October 17, 2011 3:13 pm

That loss hurt a lot. I was frankly expecting far better after the great showing against LA Tech.

I am not advocating that Coach McMackin or anyone on his staff lose their job. I think the jury is still out on the McMackin era. But it does disturb me that, on this board and on others, you will often find that anyone who does call for a staff change is criticized for being an alarmist or a “fair weather fan.”

These type of discussions are healthy and fair. Especially after debacles like UNLV and SJSU. It is one thing for the team to have an off game. But the inconsistency that has been shown this season, as well as what seems to be a downward trend on special teams, suggest failures of a more systematic nature. Those type of problems begin and end with the coaches.

My best wishes to the team and to the coaches for a successful remainder of the season.

  121. Old School Dave October 17, 2011 3:16 pm

#115- BIK: Thanks for the clarification regarding the new construction at UH-Hilo. I’ve always liked that campus – easily accessible. I have a friend who teaches at nearby Hawaii CC and often will take the kids to the new pool at UH-Hilo.

I wonder if someday, UH-Hilo could start-up a football program, say Div-III or NAIA?

Sats, going for two makes sense only after the fact. If you and your friend go back to when UH was lining up for the PAT. Did the thought of going for two cross your minds then?

To come out after you know the outcome is slightly disingenuos. Don’t forget that there’s also a possiblity of a pick 2 when going for two. If something like that happened, Mack would have been fired before he stepped off the plane here.

Nevada – Always tough at home in Reno.

Utah State – elusive freshman QB, talented RBs, team ready for a breakout game.

Fresno – Always lots of speed and talent.

Tulane – ?? Don’t know much about them. Heard that their HC is on the hotseat. Lot of speedy skilled players from that part of the country.

BYU – If UH beats the Cougars, then it’ll make up for a lot of has been a disappointing season.

I hope the players read and listen to a lot of the criticism and get angry and turn things around. An 8-5 season looks good at this point in the season.

  130. Buffoman October 17, 2011 3:50 pm

If they had given thought for going after 2 as opposed to one, given the arguements. As a coach, my thinking would have been we have 7, let’s preserve that (and not think of “what if it was “8”). This is a risk decision but the rewards would be worth the risk, yet we need to protect the 7. That being said, if they ran Iosefa and he came up short, we still had 7, because preserving that was most important.

The other team still would have to score and then it would have been their decision to either tie the game with a kick or try to win it outright going for 2.

It would have been safe, with a risk/reward factor factored in.

But then again, I am not a coach and just a speculative fellow.

First off, I had to look up what disingenuos meant.

Second, if you go back and read my posts I am in no way trying to be “Not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.” (from Google definition) I was simply stating something that I found interesting while talking about the game 2 days after it happened.

No, the thought of 2 didnt cross my mind, not even 2 days after did it. And yes there is that risk, but there was also a risk of a blocked PAT returned for 2 (UW).

  136. slenzi October 17, 2011 5:12 pm

Funny that I’m now living here in SEC-land Florida and the SEC fans are quick to crucify, quick to question play calling, coaching, clock management, etc, and say pretty nasty stuff on sports talk radio. Don’t ever let UH sink to that level of fan-dom. You can be passionate an positive too. The fans down here try to justify every nasty, low, unnecessary word with “Well you know we’re just passionate about our sports down here.” Hawaii fan and proud of it. My kid go to FSU next year and they are ready to lynch the coach after less than half the season as coach and following a legend, Bobby Bowden. Will be interesting to see how the fans turn on Nick Saban or Les Miles when one of them loses this year.

    109: Excellent points to ponder.

We actually do have a great revenue generator: The University of Hawai’i system. They just refuse to be it.

MRC Greenwood has bold and innovative ideas to take Hawai’i to a higher level. Two obstacles stand in her way:

-Not enough key supporters to see her vision through

-Too much old boys and girls network that refuse to change.

Two things that holds Hawaii back from being sustainable innovators in the tech industry:

    -Isolation from world markets

    -Better surrounding manufacturing support.

You mentioned about specialty niche markets. That’s a good area to look into. Hawaii’s location allows it to be the only place in the United States to efficiently produce specialty agricultural crops: Coffee, Vanilla and Cacao. The US imports these 100%. They can be grown in Hawai’i.

If we were to convert all of the former sugar lands on the Big Island to these three products alone, we’d barely meet 2% of world market demands.

The question now becomes, do we have the work force (manual labor) to pull off such a feat? It’s not sexy techie desk work. But, there’s billions to be made.

We currently grow 80% of all corn seeds grown in the midwest. Perhaps more markets are available out there to explore.

We should be world leaders in ocean and atmospheric sciences.

We have the potential to innovate great things here. Someone just needs to see it and seize it!

jm# – it appears that Miami is trying to get into the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

  142. A-House October 17, 2011 6:29 pm

On a 2-point conversion, most will conclude it be a run or pass.

What about a QB option – run it in for 2 by the QB or lateral ball to RB. Stack 3 receivers on one side and a lone receiver near the tackle to simulate a TE. Coach can then call a play to the “weak side” based on D tendencies – just be sure to put in a speedy RB or WR.

When UH played Florida, Tebow did a “jump pass” for a TD from the 2-yard line. Useful in a PAT situation?

So many options, but——————–that would be too innovative – too bold – don’t want to disturb the status quo.

A 3-star General once questioned me about the 9 rules of war and its many applications – I said, “Sir, if I win the battle for you by breaking all the 9 rules with minimum casualties and loss of materiel would you be disappointed?” He was pissed!

  143. A-House October 17, 2011 6:37 pm

    A-Joe:

In today’s electronic world, how “isolated” would Hawaii be in reference to the mainland or Europe or the Far East? Would the top 3-5 tech corporations be willing to make Hawaii their corporate HQ? Why not Honolulu instead of Boise, Idaho? Cause too many greedy hands who want to control all the action.

New Mexico State is supposed to have a good defensive backfield per an interview on the Curran show this morning. Their defense Giving up 27.8 points per game compared to Hawaii’s 27.5 .

Hawaii is scoring at 35.5 points per game vs. New Mexico State at 26.5.

  147. Image Makeover and Celebrity Makeover October 17, 2011 6:54 pm

It’s a crowded market, and UH doesn’t have the money to compete with the BCS schools’ publicity machines. Instead of starting campaigns in the summer, launch videos on the Web site during the offseason. That’s when people are starved for football, and even a training video would produce hits and some attention.

  148. el burro sabio October 17, 2011 6:56 pm

    Mr. A-House,

Don’t make a square peg fit into a round hole.

Mo used to play soccer, hence the pooch punt. Iosefa used to play QB in HS, explaining the pass to Pollard against UC-Davis. Know the skill set of your players and design plays from that, not the other way around.

NMSU is ranked 43rd in pass defense giving up 206 yards/game, so they do have a decent secondary. However, they are ranked 92nd in rush defense giving up 185 yards/game. Perhaps the Warriors need to concentrate on the run game. Perhaps, the Pistol offense (Kiko) and see whether its effective.

    Dear Coach Tomey,

I’m sorry i made fun of you last week.

I implied that you were unable to remember what you ate for breakfast.

I also asked you to to improve the special teams play.

    Haha, you sure got me!

    .

Now seriously, How does a D-Lineman shoot the 2 gap on a PA Attempt?

Off the corners? It happens at times, after all speed kills.

But a 275 pound lineman comes through with a chip from the center

and a “lookout” block from the guard?

That doesn’t happen in Pop Warner

Nice to have a picture of Ikaika Woolsey. E komo mai!

Sorry, Kinda Shy, I had to leave to finish watching Hawaii 5-0 at home. The acoustics in the upper section was not as clear. It was better below the concourse.

    Cool opening!

    Congrats, WAHINE!

    143: A-House

The top 5 tech companies would not move to Hawaii because:

    -We’re isolated

-We don’t have adequate business infrastructure

    -no favorable business laws

-no peers for them to network with

    -no readily available capital.

Many tech companies that have started up in Hawaii eventually outgrow the island confines and move closer to either one of three things:

    -customers

    -manufacturers

    -investors

Both Boise and Utah offer favorable tax incentives for businesses than Hawaii. Being closer to markets than we are also helps.

There are flat out economics we just can’t compete with globally. But, rather than worry about the battles we can’t win, we should look to our strengths and dominate the markets we can.

In the great design of things you’ll receive an A with regard to effort and hard work. Where exactly you lost me was first on your specifics. You know, it is said, the devil is in the details… And it couldn’t be much more correct at this point. Having said that, allow me say to you just what exactly did deliver the results. The article (parts of it) is rather powerful which is probably the reason why I am making the effort to comment. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, while I can easily notice the leaps in reasoning you make, I am definitely not sure of just how you seem to connect the details which in turn make the conclusion. For the moment I will subscribe to your point but hope in the future you link the dots better.

Fantastic blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely confused .. Any ideas? Bless you!

Just about all of whatever you mention is astonishingly precise and it makes me ponder why I had not looked at this with this light previously. This particular piece really did turn the light on for me personally as far as this particular subject matter goes. However there is actually just one issue I am not necessarily too comfy with so while I attempt to reconcile that with the main idea of the point, let me observe what the rest of your subscribers have to say.Well done.
