Pono wins baseball tickets

aaAvis

Avis has chosen Pono as the winner of four tickets to Friday’s UH baseball game.

Text me the name to leave it under at Will Call. My number is 256-0223.

Big thanks to Kelly Majam and Kaia Parnaby for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show.

I would say it’s interesting that the Washington Redskins signed quarterback Rex Grossman, who played for Redskin offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Houston last year. Then again, I saw Colt Brennan a week ago, and he’s in great shape and healthy for the first time since September 2007. Game on.

Happy birthday to the mother of all Web hosts — Esme Infante-Nii. (OK, that sentence looks a little weird when it’s actually written. But I digress.)

Congrats to Rico “Suave” Nakashima — son of a former UH track coach and an ex-Rainbow Dancer — for earning a spot on the new Hawaii Five-0.

need more info on men’s basketball search. got any scoops st?

    Now, now, NYUH:
There’s nothing like a slow-pitch league where Chico Furtado was a shortstop. The man has range (I guess it’s because he didn’t have all of those keys attached to his pants, like he does when he coaches basketball.)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I got my UH green on.

Redskins sign Rex Grossman. What does that do for Colt Brennan?

Lawyers. What can you do about them?

  17. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2010 6:55 am

Once again, because I was preoccupied with my favorite subject — me — I didn’t realize the softball team was playing tonight.
And that’s why I get paid the little deer instead of the big bucks.

  18. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2010 6:59 am

We had a mini-mini Roosevelt reunion yesterday, and I called Colt to say hi to my classmate Laureen (Uno) Uwaine.
He asked her if the blog host was cool in high school.
Laureen told him: Oh, no, he was a nerd back then.
To which I wonder: When did I stop being a nerd?

  19. haka March 17, 2010 7:00 am

Swift as in Fuel Air Spark Technology (FAST)

  20. protector March 17, 2010 7:01 am

    chopsueyboy & ST,

I heard about that revolting development of Grossman signing with the Redskins.
And yes, I know that Colt is the type of guy that embraces (rather than shies away from) competition. That’s IF it’s a legitimate shot at competition. It’s just irritating along with the possibility, if not likelihood, of them drafting a high-profile college QB.

What’s wrong with Cleveland, the New Yorks, Jacksonville, Indianapolis and a host of other teams from inquiring about getting Colt for peanuts/ extremely low draft choice?

  21. haka March 17, 2010 7:02 am

    ST, today you’re a Saint!

  22. protector March 17, 2010 7:04 am

As long as it’s not fast as in I don’t get to eat today.

  24. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2010 7:09 am

I think in a capped year, CB has an advantage.
He’s healthy, been studying for two years, and he’s affordable. That along with being a good quarterback.
Unfortunately, this is an uncapped year. Money is no object, and Daniel Snyder has a lot of money.

  25. haka March 17, 2010 7:10 am

Oh no, don’t eat fast. You should masticate sloooooooowly.

  26. papajoe2 March 17, 2010 7:10 am

some how Gib Arnold doesn’t excite me as much as the other coaches that JD interviewed. maybe its his father thing or the Punahou thing. I still support the basketball team and coach whoever will be hired until they start putting on a boring, losing show. first year losing is a given, but, seeing improvement in style of play and clock management would be nice.

  27. papajoe2 March 17, 2010 7:13 am

  33. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:26 am

    Aloha Kelly and Kaia,

What was the ultimate deciding factor in your individual choices to play for the University of Hawaii?

  34. Pauoa Boy March 17, 2010 7:27 am

Colt get chance, Rex Grossman is a decent backup not starter, they released ancient Todd Collins, Jason Campbell well he’s better suited as a quality backup to me and spot starter then a full time starter as he’s proven he’s inconsistent and well not that great. I’m sure Colt if given the chance with Shanahan, he could turn the Redskins around…

  35. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:27 am

    Kelly,

You seem like a very intense and competitive person on the field, is this something natural or was it developed over the years?

  36. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:29 am

    Kaia,

You seem like a very relaxed indivdual on the mound, is that natural for you or is it like taking away something from your opponents and not letting them see any kind of stress or panic during games?

  37. haka March 17, 2010 7:30 am

    Kelly & Kaia,
You are both majoring in kinesiology. What do each of you plan to do with your degree?

  38. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:30 am

    Kelly,

After your injury last season, did it give you a new appreciation for the game and for your “gift” of being able to still play softball at a high level afterwards?

  39. Slugger March 17, 2010 7:32 am

    Good morning!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ESME!!!

  40. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:33 am

Weather NOW looks good for softball.

  41. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:34 am

    Kaia,

How much did you know about Hawaii’s softball program before Coach Coolen started recruiting you?

  42. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:35 am

    Kelly and Kaia,

What are your individual mindsets the day after a win and after a loss?

  43. Kekoa March 17, 2010 7:36 am

There are city folks around the country who dump green dye in their rivers or lakes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Aren’t we the lucky ones, we got the Ala Wai 24/7 so no need.

  44. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:37 am

    Kelly and Kaia,

What is your favorite “Coolen-ism”? If you don’t have one maybe you can ask Stephen Tsai for one.

  45. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:38 am

    Kelly and Kaia,

In your opinions, what aspect of the team’s performance are you both happy with thus far and what other areas would need improvement going forward into conference play?

  46. Kaz1 March 17, 2010 7:38 am

Hey ladies. Are both of you single?

  47. (Jesse)James March 17, 2010 7:41 am

  48. Kazz March 17, 2010 7:41 am

    Kelly and Kaia,

Last question, I promise!!! What are your individual goals for this season and the next? Thank you very much for choosing to play and represent the University of Hawaii and the people of Hawaii and I think I speak for many of the softball fans when I say we look forward to watching your careers evolve in the years to come!

Good morning Tsai-kos!! Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

    Feliz cumpleanos, Esme!

re: Redskins – I have 2 questions (from a clueless wahine):
    1) Is Grossman really the #2 or do they expect him to challenge Campbell?
    2) Are they still looking to draft a qb (e.g. Bradford) in the first round? I’d prefer they look at drafting OL or backfield. Portis is getting older and frequently injured.

I know it’s early, but, who’s going to the volleyball game on Friday?

Whatever reason Joe Jellybean Bryant was eliminated as candidate for the UH head BB position couodn’t be lack of coaching at college level. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater Laselle University. He was coach of Bob Nash’s son Bobbie at Shiga Lakestars in Japan. Jellybean comes to Hawaii a lot. Put on many coaching clinics here even at Manoa. Loves Hawaii as son Kobe does. Like JJ and McMackin who love Hawaii, and tell their recruits they not only love Hawaii but love living here. JJ left but not because he hates Hawaii. It’s an issue he will address when time is right and JJ still plans to retire and live here. Jellybean would probably tell recruits the same. Who of all these 6 plus coaches JD interviewed could genuinely say the same? Who among them can tell blue chippers “I played in the NBA and can teach you how to get there?”. Who among them can tell blue chippers my son is a future hall of famer and in his free time may even join me and can give you pointers on how to improve your game. And hesitant to come to Hawaii 4-5 stars may think “If Kobe’s father thinks Hawaii is good enough for him than it’s good enough for me”. It’s all mute as Jellybean is no longer being considered. But in our cash strapped state and how he could bring fans back to the Stanley, I can’t help dreaming.

the one interviewee that surfaces questions in my mind is that former utah hc now at gonzaga.

after that first year of success he experienced two years of nosediving until they went sub .500. he “resigned” under buyout provisions which virtually meant he was asked to leave.

not sure if we want the scenario here. he does have the most experience of them all, however………..

  67. al March 17, 2010 9:02 am

that colorado assistant, if he is interviewed may be the darkhorse.

still wondering why jarrin akana hasn’t applied.

  70. BG March 17, 2010 9:10 am

    GOOD MORNING TSAIKO NATION!!!

Kekoa (from previous thread)…perhaps Coach Mac and JD would allow a pilot project with volunteers doing the input. Wouldn’t cost them anything, but they would see the wisdom in a couple of years…the compliance office too. The system would be light years ahead of any other school and wouldn’t take too long for ALL of the other UH sports to join in.

  71. BG March 17, 2010 9:20 am

    SteveM

Thanks for keeping the “other” site front and center. At the end of last season, we finally found out that they were going to release the site(s) to the public and we’ve jumped on it.

Kekoa, Sailor Blue, we should coordinate on making reservations NOW. Kekoa and I can get the short term, but we need the big gun trained on the long range target. When I went to make the reservation for the practice T-Gate, I was told the office by Schooner’s no longer handles that…gotta go in to Pearl Harbor! Now I need to call and ask if any other guidelines for reservations have changed besides the office location.

    What’s that line from Hook?
He’s so fast, he’s fast asleep.

Best scene from the movie “Hook” is when the pirates had a baseball game and someone from the stands yells: “HE’S STEALING SECOND!!!” and some other pirate in the stands shoots the runner dead. 😆 😆 😆

(I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE! THAT’S FUNNY!!!)

Then there was that time another pirate got accidentally shot by Captian Hook when Robin Williams pulled out his checkbook.

Hmmm… For a “kid’s movie” there was a lot of “shooting” huh?

Still funny though. I think I was like 8 years old when that movie came out…

  73. Manoa Mist March 17, 2010 9:22 am

Stephen, a walk is as good as a hit. So’s a bean ball. Take one for the team!
And I think you stopped being a nerd when we all found out you could make us laugh. If you can make people laugh, you automatically come off the nerd list.

  74. Pomai March 17, 2010 9:23 am

#24 ST – Unfortunately, this is an uncapped year. Money is no object, and Daniel Snyder has a lot of money.

But he didn’t get all that money by spending it when he didn’t have to, an with Colt he doesn’t have to.

  80. RupertDaStupert March 17, 2010 9:30 am

I am not saying Jellybean would be a guarantee winner here. I am saying in our near bankrupt state with UH dying for bucks and hard to get 3-4-5 star recruits to join us, there is nothing to lose in giving Jellybean a chance. Conan O’brien was thought to be the new messiah when he took over the Tonight show. Didn’t work out. But we would never have known unless we took that chance. Jay Leno reclaimed his show and now beating David Letterman in ratings. Jellybean may not hit home runs every appearance at the plate but he sure would create an exciting environment. Father of future hall of famer. He himself a veteran of the NBA. It’s a slam dunk choice never to happen. Wouldn’t we all want the Fabulous Five days revived? I sure would. I can’t wait another 30 plus years. I will be dead of old age. You will never ever have a NBA veteran with a future hall of famer son ever apply for a UH job again. Let’s do it. We would never have planes if the Wright brothers didn’t take chances. We may never have radios if Marconi didn’t follow his dreams. If UH was rich like Notre Dame than I can see JD’s logic.

Tsaikette fans of the old Battle Star Atlantis TV series might remember her ‘hunky’ cousin, Jason Momoa. He still sports his super long *Dreds.*

  90. BG March 17, 2010 10:00 am

LizK is more knowledgeable, but my opinion on Colt’s situation is that Grossman was brought in because of Kyle Shanahan’s familiarity with him. I agree with others who think he is not a long term answer at QB. Campbell’s too expensive as a former #1 pick to sit on the bench. They have to play him or trade him. It was too bad Colt was on injured reserve and couldn’t get any playing time last year. He could have been well positioned this year.

HC Shanahan probably wants to build the way he did at Denver. To do that he needs a running game. A running game needs a good O-line so it makes sense to use their top draft pick to that end. If that happens, Grossman can be effective as he sometimes was at Chicago. Colt will be the wildcard. Pre-season will be crucial.

Personally, I’d like to see him get a shot at the starting job this year. If not, going elsewhere would be/could be a better deal. Especially a team that runs a 4 wide attack out of the shotgun.

  91. Kazz March 17, 2010 10:03 am

    JM,

I don’t care about the rain on myself, the condition of the softball field is another thing. So far, we’ve been lucky and no rainouts at home. Last season I think had one.

At least if one of or both the softball games rainout tomorrow I can just head over to catch the exhibition Wahine Volleyball game at 7. Tonight, there is no consolation… If tonight’s softball game is rained out. It’s back to sulking in rainy afternoon rush hour traffic or not depending on how late the decision is made to cancel the game.

  92. Da Punchbowl Kid March 17, 2010 10:05 am

    You silly goose!

I’ll tell ya though, they sure seem to have lots of those brown lizards ’round here, I counted six in a ten by twelve area in our yard this mornin’.

And it WILL take an act of God to keep those Coquis from makin’ house on Oahu.

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid March 17, 2010 10:06 am

Was there a coach or a technique which helped you to develop your intensity and focus?

When I see you coming up to bat and when you’re on base, opposing players and coaches must be thinking” here comes trouble!” You have a very intimidating aura, I love it!

    DPK,

    Dey u go!

Another player fo spak with intensity and “presence” is Jenna Rodriguez. Especially when she is called in to pitch. Saw her in the fall against Chaminade and what Coach Coolen said about her mound presence alone is pretty much dead on and she was throwing some HEAT too. She came in relief against DePaul on Saturday for Parnaby and she just has “it” on the mound. Unfortunately for her, with Parnaby and Ricketts being the ACES, she’s not going to get much time, barring some sort of injury or drop off in play from the top two. Plus, she’ll only have next season as a senior and Parnaby will only be a sophomore and Ricketts only a junior.

jmxxxx ~ Yeah, that Stargate, Starlite-Starbright, is all Hollywood tho. Jason is cool and a very down to earth local boy. Diana records every episode.

However, Haunani is the ultimate Warrior. Doze Nanakuli boys have nuttin’ but respect for her!…or she simply slams 102 mph volleyball balls at them. That can rearrange your facial profile and give you a new outlook on life at the same time!

  107. A-House March 17, 2010 11:25 am

How much of a “gimmick” would it be to hire Joe Bryant as HC of Hawaii’s basketball team?

Would other schools look down on UH? Heck, most of them already do “so what’s da problem?”

Another coach may stay 3 years if successful and then move on; if “jelly Bean” stays 3 years, what’s the diff?

I think JD should really “think outside the box” on this one as the “benefits” may be much more than what others may bring to Hawaii.

Kobe Bryant is not one of my most favoriate persons, but if he will visit and make the Hawaii players better all the power to him as a person and NBA player. Self interest, you say, than tell or show me where self-interest has never been a primary reason for doing something. Most if not all do it!!!

  108. vballfan1 March 17, 2010 11:34 am

Jellybean Bryant is almost 60 and has been out of collegiate coaching for a long time. Thank you JD for looking elsewhere. UH needs a exciting young coach that will (hopefully) coach here for the next 15- 20 years.

Was just thinking, having a winning program, an low ticket prices doesn’t mean that fans will show up. Example Wahine Softball, they have a winning program and you can’t get lower than FREE, yet they don’t get very much fan support.

Seems to me that the UH faithful are letting these girls down. To me they represent the true student athlete they play for the love of the game and not a shot at the pro payday.

    Welcome fellow-faster!

As for Colt- I’m just a fan… and my gut says- this is Colt’s time.
New Coach is shaking the tree to change the mindsets and see which branches need pruning to shape it into something new.
With Colt’s winning attitude and winning ways – even though he has been away from the field for so long – will pop back into place. If Coach has a clear vision of what it takes to have a winning team, Colt will be there, front and center.

  127. Kazz March 17, 2010 12:44 pm

    Pomai,

I’ve been able to consistently make it to the softball games only since last season and if I were to GUESS, the average attendance is about 80.

Now, if one were to look at the national average in Division I, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was around that figure or even just a little more.

Their 2007 season to the WAC title and a Super Regional appearance drew the attention of a lot of us and the subsequent “project” in which you spearheaded was another “event’ that drew some of us a little closer to the program.

For me, being at the games and kinda seeing how it’s run takes me back to the days when I used to play team sports and there was that “grass-roots” feel to it where everyone directly involved literally gets involved. Even their post game BBQs with their head coach providing his grilling skills at times reminds me of the purity that can be found in what is now the BIG BUSINESS NCAA.

Yet to do it all on the Division I level is unappreciated and overlooked.

Hard not to root for this program and the others like it at UH Manoa… But I cannot sit and watch golf or tennis. 😎

  128. Kazz March 17, 2010 12:57 pm

Hmmm… Only if there was NCAA D1 Nutball… I’d try to make a comback for a masters at UH. 😆

If the new HC for UH basketball is moderately successful, I doubt he would stay beyond 5 years if a BCS school comes calling – more pay, better facilities, better players/recruits, better connections, etc. – especially the Big East or ACC where basketball rules!!

No matter how you look at it, UH is but a mere stepping stone to something bigger and better.

Graham Watson thinks that UH will go 4-1 in their nonconference schedule this season. Good point that Colorado, Army, and UNLV had losing records last season and Charleston Southern is in D-IAA.

As noted above, the nonconference schedule as a whole is not nearly as tough as it has been in the past. The season opener against USC will be tough, but at least the Warriors get the Trojans at home. Then the next four nonconference games are against FBS teams with losing records and an FCS team. Hawaii can gain some early confidence with this schedule, especially if the Warriors play well against USC, and it could go into the conference season with momentum and maybe pick off some of the better team early in the conference schedule. I like the Warriors to go 4-1 in nonconference play.

Majam’s cat & mouse base run-down was fun to watch!

  195. Curt March 17, 2010 9:34 pm

Tons of comments on the Washington Redskins’ blog regarding the Rex Grossman addition. Lots of negative comments heaped on Grossman, Campbell, and the o-line. Colt will have to really to light it up…especially if they draft or bring in another free agent QB. Time for the tough to get going.

  196. PowderPuff March 17, 2010 9:38 pm

I am going to have to get the “visual aids” on video this weekend. They’re going to be well…very visual.

  198. Curt March 17, 2010 9:41 pm

ST: Can you ask Davone Bess to convince the Dolphins to trade for Colt and bring in Jason Rivers and June Jones? Then, we can watch Colt and the Dread Heads lead the country in offense like the good old days. 🙂

    …not yet.

    Congratulations Pono….

    Colt Brennan –

I said it before – I think the best place for him now is with the SAINTS.

Colt’s accurate passing will do great in that wide open attacking offense.

I think he could beat out their #2 (can’t remember this veteran’s name),

and he certainly could beat out Doug Flutie II for #3.

Let’s see if the Skins will draft a QB next month.

  201. Curt March 17, 2010 9:50 pm

I would think that we’ll find out who our new basketball coach is sometime next week. Pick a good one JD!

    ai-eee-soos,

If the Skins draft a QB, I really think Colt will have a hard time making the team…even though we know how good he is. I think Shanahan will try hard to pick up a big-time QB. We’ll see.

  206. ai-eee-soos March 17, 2010 10:09 pm

    Curt – # 205.

Agreed – that’s what I was leading to.

If he gets released, I sure hope he gets a look see by the Saints.

Man, I can picture Colt moving the team downfield, zip, zip, zip.

    ahhh – only can wish.

  207. Curt March 17, 2010 10:26 pm

    ai-eee-soos,

Yup. Colt can definitely move the ball.

I think he’s better than any of the other Skins QBs and even other starting QBs elsewhere in the NFL. Hopefully, he gets a good look from Shanahan. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

shal i tell her i am your uncle or your father?

  209. protector March 17, 2010 10:34 pm

    Curt,

I’m also disheartened by the developments at the Redskins. I really felt that a sharp guy like Shanahan would’ve recognized that he had a hidden gem in the larder. Perhaps I gave him too much credit; perhaps he IS only a shadow of the genius that he once was. The sad part is that Colt is better than Cutler or anyone Shanahan has had for a long time. Give him some protection & weapons & see what he can do. I’ve been wrong before. Thought Spurrier would give Rolo a chance when he saw what he could do at the Hula Bowl. thought Martz would fight to get Colt drafted at the 49ers; think what he could’ve done there instead of Alex Smith. WRONG- the ‘geniuses’ are just way past their prime I guess.

    ai-ee-soos,

I agree that it would be great for Colt to go to the Saints. He could also do worse than go to the Colts, Giants, Patriots or any number of other places (even Cleveland where I feel he could legitimately win the starting job). It seems familiarity breeds contempt and the Redskins sadly undervalue what they have

  210. Slugger March 17, 2010 10:58 pm

    Good night, all!

  211. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 17, 2010 11:00 pm

We’ll be at the softball and baseball games on Friday and I’ll be at the softball games by myself as well as the volleyball match on Saturday with DrDoc. If it finishes 1/2/3, then we’ll head on over to the Les to watch the final three innings or so of the basebaall game. We may even catch some volleyball Thursday evening if we get back to campus in a timely fashion.

I have a personal request: DrDoc’s busy, busy, busy season is now in full gear from now through April 20th. Although I can get by watching a baseball game by myself as long as it’s broadcast by Don Robbs, I do need help with following the softball games because of my impaired vision. I know the game and all the strategies – I just need help in tracking the action. Is there anyone here on the blog who would be willing to sit with me when DD cannot make it to help me follow the game? .

  215. Kazz March 17, 2010 11:42 pm

I couldn’t sleep and it was bothering the hell out of me.

So I watched the replay and played it back and forth on my DVR and I’m sorry but that ball Rodriguez hit in the bottom of the 6th was a HOMER.

    The ball is yellow.
    The foul pole is white.

In slow motion, there is a CLEAR color differential when the ball goes over the fence. The angle was outward giving it the appearance it was foul.

If it was foul then there would be no color differential when the darker colored ball goes over the lighter colored foul pole.

I may be color blind, but two things that are completely opposite colors such as white and yellow are as plain as night and day. I woke up my now ticked off brother who agrees with me.

    THERE!!!! HA!!!

Final score. UH 5-0. COUNT IT!

The Redskins are interesting in drafting Tim Tebow in the second round? The report says that Washington might draft an OT in the first round and a QB in the second round…

On a day the Redskins locked up one quarterback, they’re apparently preparing to work out another. The Redskins are one of five teams that have scheduled individual workouts with draft prospect Tim Tebow, according to the Sporting News.

The former Heisman Trophy winner is not projected by most to be a first-round draft pick, but because he could go early in the second round, he reportedly will be invited to New York to attend the NFL draft next month.

The Redskins hold the draft’s No. 37 pick, which could put them in prime position to select Tebow in the second round, if they choose.

Just read this morning’s Advertiser article by Ferd Lewis and Dayton Morinaga, I don’t know about y’all, but it seems to me Jim Donovan and his “committee”, have interviewed nothing but NOBODYS.

There’s not a single recognizeable name among the candidates they’ve alrewady interviewed.
    Not one.
Unless of course you consider the son of the WORST coach in ANY sport the school has ever had.
No names, but Frank Arnold makes Fred vonAppen look like Vince Lombardi.

SPOILER ALERT: NO READ IF RECORDING NCAA TOURNEY

This tourney is starting off with a bang. I’m enjoying it with the first game going to double OT. Unfortunately, I’m getting a few more gray hairs as my pool is potentially blowing up with Nova being taken to OT by a 15 seed. Unreal! Comp time off is a beautiful thing. 🙂

  249. NorthShoreFan March 18, 2010 10:17 am

JD got one huge decision to make. Looking at the names of applicants, most do not have a “impressive” list of personal accomplishments. JD has got to chose one who show the most potential and that is never easy. Like recruiting athlethes, some pan out, some don’t but you recruit on past accomplishments and future potential. Unlike big programs where applicants are established and have a history of personal accomplishments.
Make a good selection and we get a floundering program off and running. If not we will be struggling for a few more years.
Available resources is a major obstacle any program, especially for UH.
Whoever is chosen, we need to give them the time and support to develop their program. How much time? How much success? When you looking for the diamond in the rough, you might find more more quartz crystals before the real stuff.
