Locker organizer

To all the old farts like me, remember what your room looked like when you were in your late teens and early 20s?

Magnify that image by 18, and that’s what Stan Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff and men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade expected when they opened the dead-bolt-locked locker room.

To their surprise, the locker room was as neat and clean as a Marine’s bed. The floors were spotless. Everything was folded and placed in the proper place.

Strange, for sure. And then Sheriff recalled that outside hitter Kupono Fey was the last person in the room, a few weeks earlier. Without prompting or promotion, Fey had tidied the entire locker room.

It starts with one person.

Don’t forget to check out the March of the Lawmakers — also known as the Kailua Fourth of July Parade — this morning.

    ST:

Is there something in place where UH receives a part of all sales of UH logo and otherwise decorative apparel?

did UH bungle the offer by June Jones to own the H logo for “free”? IIRC you mentioned some time ago it is owned by June Jones Foundation.

If so, can UH legally stop mainland schools from infringing on the H logo?

Some things start with just one person.

“When in the course of human events…”

Other times it takes a group of people who are deeply committed.

    Commitment?

As you look at your breakfast, remember which was truly committed. The chicken or the pig?

Kupono was brought up exceptionally right. Congrats to his mom and pops. Something tells me he will have a great career as a Warrior and will be remembered for a long time. Heck this story alone makes him exceptional to me.

Kupono Fey for Governor or UH President or BOTH!!!! You da MAN!!!!

  18. HALEAKALA July 4, 2014 8:54 am

I need to get to the UH Warriors store next time I’m in Honolulu.

BTW, did anyone else get a thank you letter from BJ for donating to the Warriors travel fund?
I thought that everyone who donated a $100 was supposed to get a letter. I just thought about it since I haven’t received a letter. I also wonder how the campaign ended up. I had a couple of updates but none recently. I believe the goal was $10,000.

Anyone else think those wears posted by ST are rather ugly?
Is it suppose to be retro from the 70’s?
Would match someone with high athletic socks with roller skates 🙂

Mainlanders dont know the hawaiian flag. Remember, bryan clay was hated when he wore the flag after winnng the gold in the decathlon at the olympics.

    #18 Haleakala:

A couple days ago, I think it was only around $4,500!

I think you only get a personalized BJ letter if you donated BIG bucks – I believe it was $1,000 or thereabouts.

  30. Ralph July 4, 2014 12:15 pm

#18 Haleakala Indiegogo is a crowdfunding venture by UHAD that is failing miserably – lacked direction, publicity and followup. Look back and you would be hard pressed to find any info on indiegogo unless you saw it when it was first announced. To date there is $4,415 in the till with 3 days remaining. Thirty donors contributed, of which, a donor gave $2,500 a month ago and another $400 a week ago, not a lot of people stepped forward because it is a poorly marketed venture by Ben Jay.

I think the H-Zone is a wonderful idea and I wish it much success. But VS is in Ala Moana, nicely displayed and the tourists were flocking. Must be the knee-high pink socks.

  36. NorthShoreFan July 4, 2014 2:03 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Happy fourth to all!…remembering it ain’t all that free…came at a price!

well, 5 cups of coffee for breakfast, freshly made pinakbet for lunch and a small steak for dinner…the it off to Wahiawa to….whoa oh whoa!…listen to the music!

    Have a safe one everybody!

  37. A-House July 4, 2014 3:22 pm

For me, personally, the “H Zone” is disappointing!!

Just a little oversized Rainbowtique – same stuff with more space – seemed like only H logo items for football – asked staff about “other” designs and apparel for other sports – response was it will or should arrive just before the sport begins!!! both cashiers agreed that the former “Rainbow” logo apparel was very popular, but being considered for sale later.

IMPO, very poor marketing as selection of shirts, pull overs, etc. and no consideration to stock with other sports before opening or designs – told clerks they lost an opportunity to make sales.

walked away totally unimpressed with the selection of apparel and use of space – the only “half-body” length mirror was propped up against the glass window looking out to Ala Moana Blvd – there is NOTHING in or at that store, IMPO, that would excite customers to purchase items!!!!!!!!

Totally unattractive! like ST posted, location at Ala Moana S/C store with UH apparel much more attractive.

  38. BigWave96744 July 4, 2014 3:56 pm

SteveM, thanks for saying “we” and not just “you” 🙂

  39. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 4:16 pm

    # 37 A House…..Thanks 4 ur review the H zone ….presume u did not spend a dime there…what about the traffic in the store, when you were there…the cash register was “ringing up” a lot of sales or just moderate ?

  40. Ya_Think July 4, 2014 4:29 pm

#37 – Why did you even expect anything different? They same morons are running it that run the marketing for UHAD.

  41. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 4:35 pm

    # 32 STEVE M…out of touch…means if we are shop there we are not allowed “to touch” he he he

  42. A-House July 4, 2014 4:38 pm

    #39:

very little traffic and we were the 2nd to ring the register – absolutely NO line to the register – Mrs A-house always finds something to buy! – with my AKA card, we got 15% off the purchase.

beside the family – there were 6 other customers inside the store and none purchased any apparel

unless something exciting happens, BJ will be very hard pressed to reach his $500,000 profit goal – I for one would not go back!

  43. SteveM July 4, 2014 4:51 pm

hmmm, some people caught the double entendre. 🙂

    BigWave96744 — 😉

  44. Shoko July 4, 2014 5:20 pm

Sounds like the H-Zone is off to an impressive start. I’m sure if it falls short on it’s projected profits, athletic department will spin the figures to make it look more favorable.

Not having the store fully stocked means missed opportunities in sales. Not to mention folks walking away disappointed and now unwilling to go back when they have more merchandise in stock. First impressions is a lasting impression.

  45. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 5:37 pm

Thanks A House….guess ST was being extremely nice wanting to see it “work” n best wishes to the zone …was just wondering what his “sub” message really was…but pretty sure when August rolls around it should pick up mucho bucks…hope so…

In 1973 me was at Lincoln for their state fair (as exhibitor)…n had a few days after set up to visit a mall there in Lincoln…went to a mall..n entered Sears…cornhuskers was playing UCLA in a few days…talk about a “cultural shock” when I entered…was just a sea of red…jerseys…to soup n nuts merchandise…could not believe…first thought was…holy cow…how in hell they are gonna move all this stuff…the stadium is adjacent Fair Grounds…no big screen TV those days…but radio was on ne where you roamed the grounds…my first introduction to big time football …compared to the MIL…

Just went to their site.. n maybe something ST can include in this blog…a countdown to the first game…Like……days…..hours…..minutes…seconds…to Warriors vs Washington…come join us…or something to that effect…then all the Tsaiko’s that maybe get “ansty” feet waiting for that first game…or could be to start of practice…then could change to game ? just a thought..

Thanks again A-House…brought back some memories…

  46. Ipu Man July 4, 2014 6:38 pm

I had an old UH logo “100 percent cotton” shirt I cherished for many years and hoped to find a replacement at the new UH Zone store…but alas alack, everything looked synthetic.
Also it was very dark. I guess if you played loud disco music with a mirrored ball on the ceiling it would be inviting…

  47. Ipu Man July 4, 2014 6:40 pm

At the annual Christmas Craft show at the NBC I saw doggy UH logo apparel. Maybe they should sell that, too. I wonder if they make logo bikinis for gifts for the ladies. You could call it Victor’s Secret…

  48. Ipu Man July 4, 2014 6:44 pm

Here’s a thought: Plan a “special event” art contest by the UH Zone store, calling on artists and crafters to create UH sports related items and sell/display them at the store around Christmas time…with the usual consignment percentage going to UH…

  49. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 7:26 pm

    # 46, 47, 48, Ipu Man…hope sumone at the UHAD picks up on ur comments…to maybe correct “IMAGES” of the zone… n ur idea of “art contest”… could do it for students..(for design) n another category..for fans.. be a excellent way to get both fans n students involved in the program…there is ZERO input now for students n fans a reason to get involved…

  50. A-House July 4, 2014 8:10 pm

    #45:

While ST can ‘pump’ up some people on this blog, shouldn’t it be the UHAD, specifically the SID, who should be the “point man” is spreading the word or at the direction on whatever Assistant AD in charge of marketing?

sitting on their behind making the “hind quarters” bigger is, certainly IMHO, not getting the job done – lack of insight? lack of foresight? lack of enthusiasm? lack of everything!!!!!!

    get up! do something!

yet, they hold the “lofty” position raking in the big bucks – just burns my buns!!!

  51. ran July 4, 2014 8:15 pm

As for the “H Store”, I too was very disappointed. Also no special events planned during the three day 4th of July weekend. definitely someone dropped the ball on merchandise and special grand opening happenings.

  52. A-House July 4, 2014 8:16 pm

makes me wonder what their job description entails?

wonder how much training/experience they received in looking outside of the box – or, do they want to remain tunneled vision? seems like a sterile chemistry flask – and, one begets another

  53. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 8:31 pm

Yea… the SID….SHOULD READ THIS BLOG every day…as the sports talk shows to listen in..to get the pulse of the people…keep reading on here how “nice guys” they all seem to be there…but maybe lacking of direction or “ENTHUSIASM” as mentioned above…have not seen a positive comment about the ZONE… hope there will be some soon…

  54. BigWave96744 July 4, 2014 9:31 pm

H-Zone sound like an establishment on Guam called the G-Spot.
Though it sports the Red University of Georgia “G” logo, from what I was told it has nothing to do with the Bulldogs, GB Packers or Farrington Governors.
Also unless you pack the cash, you are “Out of Touch”
    Hafa Adai!!!!

  55. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 9:49 pm

    Hope u’all having a very good …patriotic.. n pleasant 4th there to all you bloggers n lurkers…
here is the 5th already…passed me by… no fireworks here…

But plan to visit the American Cemetery (sunday) where 17,000 plus are buried from WWII…shame and sad so many from all involved, had to perish…

Visited the McArthur, wade ashore when he “returned” in Leyte…several years ago…brought tears to my eyes…

  56. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 9:53 pm

BigWave96744…# 54…. Good One…will check out Manila for one of those…
Maybe me can get a pic n send to ST … be a nice post to “open” up the season he he he

  57. st. anthony trojan July 4, 2014 9:58 pm

Be nice to see nutmegger’s comment on that # 54…n sure to have the aisles carpeted… could be rolling in them for sum time…he he he

  58. BigWave96744 July 4, 2014 11:31 pm

Chawan_Cut’s home away from home is Guam.
I’m sure he must have seen the Spot while driving to work.

But he’s a good man and like Nemo’s friend Dory repeated, “Just keep driving, just keep driving, just keep driving, driving, driving. What do we do? We drive, drive…

  59. SteveM July 4, 2014 11:57 pm

My initial apprehensions about the H-Zone store is that it is “government owned and operated”… which usually means expenses will exceed revenue in a downward spiral. BUT, there are some businesses that would be harder to screw up due to the relatively high margins and popularity in the products– and the H-Zone might be one.

Anyone who has played business simulations games–from the Lemonade Stand, SimCity and up, know that stock ties up money–and if it doesn’t sell well, that is $$$ sitting as clothing in storage and not available to pay the rent, employees, or help the AD bottom line.

So, the grand opening can display only items they can afford to stock today…and even the items in stock have or will soon be paid to the supplier. The rent is due at month end and the workers will be expect to be paid every 2 weeks. Initial sales are needed before additional stock can be added… when they say the other sports apparel will appear when their season approaches, it is a stock and cash flow problem of a startup business. I think.

Anyway, a little patience and many more items will appear if the store is profitable–or can survive it’s initial debts. I do not think the AD, Chancellor, or President will let it die easily, so expect to see great variety as the fall semester gets underway.

    My guess, anyway…

  60. BigWave96744 July 5, 2014 12:14 am

A couple years ago there was a RainbowTique clearance sale at Windward Mall.
Aloha shirts and Women’s dress that retailed for $125 were on sale for $25.
The shocking thing was there was boxes up the ying yang and stacked to the roof.
The employee said the buyer “F’d up” and ordered too much.
I told the dude, it’s not the buyer’s fault, it’s the person who marked it up to 125 bucks.
I mean how many people do you know who buys $125 Aloha Shirts?

  61. gobows July 5, 2014 6:08 am

    54

That would be a strip club…and in guam, anything goes, and i mean anything

  62. tommui July 5, 2014 7:49 am

    #59, #60

I assume the H-Zone people know about POS (Point of Sale) as an inventory control.

And they better know about how to limit their orders, not to triple keystone etc.

The problem with some retailers is that their buyers -i.e. those that purchase inventory – have no concept of marketing. And that is one of the reasons those businesses go belly-up.

  63. NotNasti July 5, 2014 8:30 am

    60. BigWave: I got a closet full of them . . . it’s called Tommy Bahama. The Mrs. keeps buying them. Bought me three more two days ago. Me, I shop for clothes at Costco and Ross’.
