Thursday night lights

The Warriors had their first — and only — dress rehearsal under the Aloha Stadium lights tonight. Middle linebacker Brashton Satele made an emotional appearance after returning from L.A., where he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. But defensive tackle Chris Leatigaga suffered what appeared to be a severe knee injury.

ok- back at work- just a fast shout out to all the people who made last night so special. The players said it best when asked why they were playing for Hawaii (and many came from the mainland) … HAWAII IS OUR FAMILY!

It was really cool to see the diversity represented by OUR WARRIORS. From the hobbits (you know who you are) to the thin air breathers, the mighty mini speedsters to the immovable objects, ALL are WARRIORS. ALL are our OHANA. Gentlemen, your AUNTIES and the other fans SALUTE YOU!

speaking of Cory, small kid time I used to shoot hoops with his pops, Vaughn… He was @Castle and I was @Kaneohe Elementary… I thought he was 7 feet tall back then 🙂

Cory’s aunty Verli was a year older than me.. Some of you from 96744 may know their Ohana.

I think Vaughn was around the age of Ransen Borges and Alvis Satele’s oldest bro Sefo

Number of vacation days left …?

  16. Stephen Tsai August 27, 2009 8:53 am

By the way, in conjunction with the Hilton, we’re having a contest starting, maybe, next week. It depends on whether our folks figure out how to run a decent fire drill first.

Last night we got a lot of feedback about Coach Mack’s ACADEMICS focus for the players- especially helping the freshmen adjust to football and classes.

    OUTSTANDING!!!

Leila just received approval to go to Vegas, but she doesn’t get there until the Thursday before the game. It is our hope to do shows from there Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the administration or not, but for some reason, I recall that JJ was allowed to bring in a certain number of borderline students. They weren’t allowed to play right away — like Pisa Tinoisamoa and Melila Purcell III — but they didn’t have to sit out two years, either. By borderline, I mean they lacked a core class (usually Algebra II or an equivalent English class). Almost all of the special admits earned degrees.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 27, 2009 9:29 am

I’ve never really gotten the full story on Stewart.
I do know that the coaches were upset that he wasn’t admitted. They really wanted him.

  38. LizKauai (We are FAMILY!) August 27, 2009 9:29 am

  39. letsgowarriors August 27, 2009 9:30 am

pisa and melila were partial qualifiers i think. back when the ncaa used to allow that. they have a similar situation to blaze and kalilimoku going the hpu route. has something to do with progress on your degree to get your 4th year back.

  40. Stephen Tsai August 27, 2009 9:31 am

I think Las Vegas needed a “1-” or a “0-1” before some of those numbers.

They keep telling players to get “on the hop.”

Conversely, we debated, what’s a schneid, and why do you get off it?

Who at UH can step up and be proactive about doing away with considering the standardized test essay for entry (versus placement)?

Putting up a such hurdle, when we are the only school in the country apparently to do so, is asinine, especially considering that Hawaii leads the nation in multi-lingual families (I’m saying we have the most without really knowing whether that is true, but since it bolsters my argument I’m going with it, lol).

So, who da guy to take on this mission and simplify entry to UH? Maybe Tuioti and Donovan should knock on some doors.

“With consistent offensive line play, Collins believes the Redskins’ offense is primed to make some big plays in the passing game this year.

As for the quarterback currently trailing him on the Redskins depth chart, Collins believes that Colt Brennan will develop into a good player in the NFL.

“He always seems to have the knack for big plays, and he’s kind of a play-maker sort of [quarterback],” Collins says. “When he’s playing, he plays with confidence.”

The exception is if you create a second on-line personality using a paid account, like Road Runner or HawaiianTel. Then you’re free to be as many people as you wish. Capitalism always trumps multiple personalities.

To get this accomplished, the Faculty Senate needs to be involved right from the start. Then, if there is strong support from the academic community, then the next step would be to work directly with the chancellors of all the campuses before going to the Board of Regents.

Great event last night – and there were a number of men in attendance. I saw LizK & Slugger a couple of rows away and another woman who is also a Capitol regular was in my group; however, the crowd was too big to know if there were others from the blog there as well.

Loved getting out on the field, but I discovered after nearly tripping on my head that the sole on my right shoe was coming off – a real hassle on artificial turf. I couldn’t take the chance on running.

What amazed me were the number of regular-sized guys – Special Teams and Running Backs. The team is definitely more big crushing guys falling on top of their opposnents.

As I said to Coach Mack, the next time on Great Circle of Life, I plan to come back with XY genes and be a defensive player – probably a nickelback. Will let folks know when that happens.

    Back to work.

Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick leads the pack followed by Boise State’s Kellen Moore. But watch for big things from Utah State’s Diondre Borel, Hawaii’s Greg Alexander and Fresno State newcomer Derek Carr.

    3. Newcomer of the year: Jovonte Taylor, WR, Hawaii — Taylor, a junior college transfer, suffered from a stomach virus last season and although he played in three games he has yet to really show what he can do as a receiver for the Warriors (two catches, 38 yards). Regarded as the team’s fastest player, Taylor will get a chance to start at receiver with former starter Malcolm Lane opting to redshirt to concentrate on academics.

The FCS preseason coaches’ poll has Central Arkansas ranked 12th. But here’s what Phil Steele’s blog (linked) had to say about ’em today:

    OVERRATED

    CENTRAL ARKANSAS
We had them #35 but the coaches voted them #12. With the loss of QB Nathan Brown and TE Marquez Branson to the NFL coupled with the loss of top receiver Willie Landers we see a great defense but they lack the firepower to win many shootouts.

Pisa was officially named the starter in Chicago.

Although it appeared to be a foregone conclusion, the Bears on Thursday officially declared Pisa Tinoisamoa their starting strongside linebacker.

The seven-year NFL veteran, who signed with the Bears as a free agent May 29, started the first two preseason games and was competing primarily with Nick Roach and Jamar Williams for the job.

“We have some good linebackers here and they all have played well, but Pisa’s been steady and been that way throughout,” said coach Lovie Smith. “He really played well this past week against the Giants.

“He brings energy, he hustles, he’s a tough guy, and he’s played at a high level in the league before, so we have an idea [how he’ll perform]. We let it play out and he deserves to be called the starter now.”

  148. Garret August 27, 2009 3:41 pm

Very pro-Zorn article is quite negative towards Colt.

Some in the organization have been a bit put off by Brennan’s swagger. They view him as a way too arrogant for a guy who hasn’t accomplished a thing in this here league. I’ve always enjoyed my conversations with Brennan, in part because we have that California connection. I covered the high school he attended, Santa Ana Mater Dei, when I was a cub reporter at the Los Angeles Times. We also share a fondness for In-N-Out Burger (it’s a West Coast thing).

Several people in the organization have told me they really think Daniel can play at this level despite being vertically challenged. And if he were to perform well Sept. 3 in the final preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, another team might sign him if the Redskins did not include him on the opening 53-man roster. The Redskins also figure another team definitely would sign Brennan, who clearly has the potential to be more than a No. 3 quarterback.

John Estes made the list of top 10 NFL prospects from non-BCS conference teams.

    9. C John Estes, Hawaii, 6-3, 295, 5.22: The Warriors’ starting right guard in 2006, Estes made the transition to center two years ago and hasn’t looked back, earning first-team all-WAC honors after each season. The veteran of 41 consecutive starts plays with a similar brand of athleticism and tenacity that earned former Hawaii standout Samson Satele a second-round pick from the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

  150. Garret August 27, 2009 3:44 pm

Feature on Kepa Gaison. I remember watching his Dad play for UH and I’m impressed Kepa went from a walk-on backup punter to a starting LB.

Over the past four years, the senior has transformed himself from a walk-on to a full scholarship athlete. And that happens, sometimes. But he also morphed himself from a fat punter and place-kicker into a rocked-up linebacker. Who does that?

    One guy: Gaison.

He went from being a scout team punter, upon whom the regulars and scrubs alike used to review the rules for roughing the kicker in special teams drills, abusing him as a crash dummy, to nailing down six tackles, five solos, and two sacks in the Sugar Bowl.

“He was a pudgy punter,” says Kalani Sitake, defensive coordinator and the first Ute coach to talk to Gaison when he was in high school. “Kind of a sacrificial lamb in practice.”

The major reason Gaison was even allowed to walk on at Utah was because his father, Blaine, is a football legend in Hawaii, a former quarterback at the University of Hawaii who went on to play safety for the Atlanta Falcons.

    6) Hawaii @ Wisconsin, Dec. 5th

A year after rebuilding their highly potent offense, the Warriors are now in rebuilding mode on the defensive side of the ball. To their credit, they developed quarterback Greg Alexander in his first year in 2008, and the former Juco transfer seems poised to have a typically prolific season for Hawaii.

Unfortunately, Hawaii will be dealing with a long flight to Wisconsin for this game, and don’t typically perform well in the Midwest and further east. If they can’t slow down the Badgers’ running attack, it could be an even longer flight home.

Review of the battle for the #2/3/4 WR spot for Miami.

Hartline claims gold star for Dolphins

Brian Hartline was the Dolphins’ top performer on offense in tonight’s 10-6 preseason win at Tampa Bay, as he hauled in three receptions for 79 yards, with a long of 54. Greg Camarillo also fared well tonight, with one catch for 54 yards. Davone Bess only had one grab for 11 yards.

Our View: The No. 2 role at receiver in Miami is still up for grabs, and Hartline improved his bid with a strong showing tonight.

    My God that’s a lot of unnecessary time spent on one’s self without a “happy ending”… 😎 … 😆

“Zorn says it’s close. Of course he does. Zorn’s not going to disrespect Daniel when the rookie has played well. However, Brennan is running the real offense while Daniel is playing pitch-and-catch against defenders who will soon be trying out for the UFL. It’s an apples-and-oranges comparison. Brennan could end this debate with a scoring throw against New England, but it would be surprising for the Redskins to cut the second-year passer who has significantly improved.”

I love how they obviously did their homework… (sarcasm) 🙄

on 3/3/09 this article points out that the team happened to have one scholarship reserved..huh?

draw your own conclusions from this

could this mean that a player that was suppose to enter in the fall of 2009 was then asked to enter in 2010 thus opening up a scholarship for the punter

That’s a no-brainer.. Invest for the FUTURE. Keep Colt and send Todd away.

It’s like if you had a lot of money to put away that you don’t need and you ONLY had a choice between two CD rates and terms:

    A 6 month CD at 4.75% *APY* or a 60 month CD at 2.50% *APY*…

C’mon… it’s an obvious choice. Well, for some…

Trade him to a team that will allow him to display his true passing skills behind a decent Oline. Give him one good blocking back with good hands and can pound!…wind him up and turn him loose! The ‘Skins are blind, deaf and dumb.

  197. Derek August 27, 2009 8:54 pm

In a way, I’m hoping that Brennan either get released or traded so that he can be picked up by the 49ers, my favorite team. Shaun Hill is a journeyman QB, Alex Smith hasn’t been cutting it, and Nate Davis is a 6th round rookie. They don’t really have an established QB so it would be a terrific opportunity for Colt. Hill played pretty well last year towards the ending of the season, but he’s not the long term solution. Plus, he hurt his back earlier this week. I’ll still keep dreaming!

  198. Kazz August 27, 2009 8:55 pm

One step backward, two steps forward…

Guys like Zach Masch, Haku Correra, and Geordon Hanohano are going to have to raise their game up should Leatigaga’s injury be as bad as described.

This feature story makes it sound like Hartline is the starting WR for Miami.

Hartline, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, got his first start in a Miami uniform and ended up making the most of it: For the game, mostly against the Buccaneers’ starting group, Hartline led Miami with three catches for 79 yards.

The most telling catch, perhaps, was a 54-yarder early in the third quarter to Tampa’s 6-yard line, which set up a 2-yard touchdown toss to tight end Anthony Fasano.

No doubt this is exactly the type of thing coach Tony Sparano was looking for: Another solid receiver to compliment quarterback Chad Pennington’s penchant for hitting multiple targets.

Behind Hartline, in those more pertinent first three quarters, no other receiver had more than one catch. And then there was this: Hartline was thrown at five times, or two more than the next receiver.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Camarillo made a significant play of his own, a 52-yard catch and run deep in Tampa territory.

  209. Kekoa August 27, 2009 10:01 pm

Cindy Cee ~ Try to make it to one of the Coach’s shows after a ball game. They usually bring a highlite reel of the best (or worse) play of the game. They will spend time breaking down that film frame by frame so that you understand what happened.

This will help you understand a bit more about those plays that I’m assuming they outlined for you. They take questions from the audience, and if you listen you will prolly hear something asked that you might have. Never be too embarrased to ask one of the Tsaiko fanatics, we’re happy to help.

D1 – carp!!! My belated & rather detailed response to your question at #135 just flipped out and disappeared into the ether somewhere. Short answer – I don’t know, but I’ll try to find out before September 4. If you’re planning to come to the T-Gate, perhaps we can talk about what, if anything, can be done next.

    #############

Once again there’ll be HI-5 recycling drives at the home game T-Gates. However, the original schedule posted the other day has been modified because the Hawaii High School Athletic Association SAVE OUR SPORTS Fund Drive will end on October 31. Originally, that HI-5 Drive was scheduled for December 5; now it will be held on October 10.

The recipient of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl T-Gate recycling drive will be announced after the Wisconsin game.

The bin(s) will be set out no later than 11 am and all the recyclables – including donations brought from home – will be stored during the breakdown before the opening ceremonies at Aloha Stadium. Most of the time, there’ll be additional collections at the post-game parties as well.

Friday, September 4: CENTRAL ARKANSAS, Na Koa Equipment Fund

Saturday, October 10: FRESNO STATE, Hawaii High School Athletic Association SAVE OUR SPORTS Fund Drive

Saturday, October 24: BOISE STATE, “Serving Up 1,000” Fundraiser honoring Coach Shoji’s 1,000th win – which should happen within a week in either direction of the drive

Saturday, November 7: UTAH STATE, Dole Middle School’s Cross-Country Fall Semester Program

Saturday, November 14: NEW MEXICO STATE, Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance

Saturday, November 28: NAVY, Koa Anuenue Scholarship Program – Men’s Sports other than football

Saturday, December 5, WISCONSIN, Fund, Koa Anuenue Scholarship Program – Wahine Sports other than volleyball

Bring eligible bottles and cans in any quantity from home to donate. We’ll pick up quantities in excess of 250 containers anywhere on O`ahu on the Sunday following the T-Gate provided that arrangements are made no later than the Friday before since we’ll have to borrow a truck.

There will also be a donation jar in which to drop your spare change. .

Again, ALL of the redemption fees & spare change donations will be made on behalf of the Tsaikos & will be sent to the designated recipients within 48 – 72 hours of each T-Gate. Mahalo in advance for supporting these youth and UH athletic programs.

nope. Chad Henne – Michigan was a true freshman starter when Michigan was a top 10 pre-season team.

  237. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 28, 2009 12:30 am

Wassup with the Willows luncheons this year? Tried to find the info on the UH Athletics website, but couldn’t locate it two days ago. Has a schedule been posted anywhere?

Is it true that the evening Call The Coach shows have been moved to some hotel in Waikiki? Any info on that – where, when, costs? I’ll park in Ala Moana Center and either walk into Waikiki or take a bus. Too cheap to pay Waikiki validated parking rates.

OFF-TOPIC QUESTION: Are there any Mac Notebook users here on the blog who could take some time to talk to DrDoc and me about buying & using Mac products.

Big day tomorrow – lots of work and then the opening match for the Wahine volleyball team 2009 season.

    That is the question

    Mr. Tsai . . .

    Thanks for the pix.

Good to see Brashton back on the field even if he is not anywhere near ready to play. Yeah!

  267. Slugger August 28, 2009 9:41 am

Back from practice. Where is everyone?

ST & the Princess were at practice. PL taking pics of the haka after practice was over.

  268. Slugger August 28, 2009 9:47 am

Methinks I was the only Tsaiko at practice, but I got there at 8.

Love watching Alex Green thread his way through defenders.

Lewis Walker not suited up, standing on sidelines. What’s up?

Hopefully a new post will be up soon with pics.

    Happy Aloha Friday y’all!

    BHF2:

what color should I go? UH green?

Green on the sides and perhaps a white stripe down the middle – of course you need not use color for the white!

I would think that it might affect your credibility in front of the judge or jury!

  270. Maynard G. Krebs August 28, 2009 9:55 am

Forgot – good morning Tsaikos everywhere!
