Late-night Chow

Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow arrived last night, then, at the First Hawaiian Bank building, met with the search/advisory committee that is helping to choose the next UH head coach for football. Chow was scheduled to catch the first flight this morning back to Salt Lake City. In all, he will have spent less than 10 hours on Oahu.

Texas assistant head coach Duane Akina, Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood and Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker get in-person interviews with the six-member committee today. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter of the Jacksonville Jaguars gets an interview via Skype.

Congratulations to Pittsburg State for claiming the NCAA Division II NC.

  11. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:11 am

Unless a current UH coach gets an interview, consider these the finalists.

  12. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:12 am

Thanks. But I’ve already taken two drives over to that side of the island today. That’s as much as I’ll normally do all year!

Didn’t run into a single motorcade either time; don’t wanna push my luck….

  13. Slugger December 18, 2011 12:12 am

    Thanks for the news, ST!

  14. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:13 am

Where the heck is Lenexa, Kansas?

  15. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:13 am

    Is that your “final” answer?

  16. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:13 am

    Ask Ralph

  17. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:14 am

    Motorcade?

We did see the, er, boatcade tonight.

That boat parade in Hawaii Kai is pretty impressive.

  18. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:16 am

I would hope that a member of the current staff would get an interview.

    That’s just good manners.

I mean, the committee doesn’t have to take notes or even listen. But it would be part of due diligence to hear the pitch.

  19. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:17 am

Looks to be about 270 miles west of Lemay, Missouri

  20. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:19 am

I actually knew a guy who attended Pittsburgh State.

    Cornelius Roberson, Roosevelt ’78.

  21. ai-eee-soos December 18, 2011 12:21 am

Wonder why Dirk Koetter is interviewing for this job.

There are 3 NFL jobs open right now, including his team’s.

One, or two more will open up in the NFL.

College: Penn State, Houston, and Pitt (?) still open.

I wonder why – no more confidence in himself ?

Heck, if i had his experience, I wouldn’t be wasting time here.

  22. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:21 am

They are real Gorillas. Pittsburg Gorillas.

(btw, I thought it was a typo but apparently there is no “h” in Kansas)

  23. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:23 am

I think we go better beaches than Happy Valley, Houston or Pittsburgh

  24. AlaWai December 18, 2011 12:23 am

ST: Do you know which current UH coaches have applied besides Miano?

  25. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 12:25 am

    AlaWai:

    Lumpkin for sure.

    Don’t know about Rolovich.

  26. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:29 am

I went to a meeting in an office at the FHB Bldg once….

Didn’t have to go to the floor where the receptionist desk is. Kinda private.

  27. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:36 am

Maybe the Cmte feels that a clean sweep may be best?

  28. d1shima December 18, 2011 12:40 am

Maybe I’m feeling that skipping the late night snack may be best.

    Oyasumina-tsai….

    Good night, gang.

  30. Slugger December 18, 2011 12:44 am

    Missing Las Vegasu right now.

  31. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 1:13 am

You know what……I really hope Norm Chow is selected as HC. We flourish with an offensive-minded coach. ST who’s your pick for the next HC out of this bunch and why?

  32. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 1:25 am

Which of the “finalist” does the average fan get excited about?

Not necessarily saying its the right choice or will be the choice…but my guess is that it may play some role in the process. Especially if all the finalist are “well qualified” for the job.

Not talking about the regular season ticket holders or the super-fans here on the blog. Just the ones that account for 2X,XXX-3X,XXX during our better than average years.

I can think of 1 maybe 2…I like one of the 2 but would rather have the others over the 2nd.

  33. PowderPuff December 18, 2011 1:39 am

Congratulations to our Warrior/Wahine graduates! Thanks for the pics, ST. Wow, I wonder when Miano’s interview is going to take place.

  34. Bulla December 18, 2011 2:26 am

hmmmm, Norm in town albeit a brief interlude….did someone say

    CHOW FUN

  35. wafan December 18, 2011 3:06 am

    Good Sunday to everyone!

  36. wafan December 18, 2011 3:07 am

    Yummmmmmmm, chow fun. Miss that.

  37. 99club December 18, 2011 3:46 am

#14 Lenexa is outside of Kansas City.

Impressive list of finalists, now, which one will be voted ‘on’ the island. I’m guessing Norm Chow. Funny how the order of their being mentioned above is the same as my rank order of their chances of being hired as the next Warrior coach.

    Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow

Texas assistant head coach Duane Akina

Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood

Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter of the Jacksonville Jaguars

  38. 99club December 18, 2011 3:48 am

If Norm Chow is selected I sure hope the headline is “It’s Chow Time.”

  39. 99club December 18, 2011 4:01 am

I wonder how many Hawaii home games the Mountain West networks (CBS College Sports, Versus, The Mountain) will broadcast next year. I wouldn’t think that they have as many programming alternatives for Hawaii’s unique late-night time slot (compared to ESPN networks).

  40. 99club December 18, 2011 4:02 am

Where’s Ron Jacobs when you need him.

  41. dozo bozo December 18, 2011 4:31 am

Chow was somewhat evasive in this short KUTV interview a few days earlier as they were preparing for their bowl game. Now we have actual confirmation he was interested and interviewed this weekend. The other previous report from a blog which mentioned Chow already had an interview was an unconfirmed rumor.

If their interviews go well, gut tells me him and Akina will be the top finalists. The two Punahou grads probably have more fundraising pull with boosters here.

Is Robert Anae still in the mix somewhere or did he not apply? If he did, he’d round out my top 3. Heck, him and Chow together in some capacity would make an awesome combo.

  42. justsaying December 18, 2011 5:04 am

If chow is willing to accept a low salary, It could be his chance to prove it was a mistake for other schools to not hire him as a head coach.chow brings the possibility of getting a big time quaterback like jj and could mentor rolovich , also with ties to cal lee he could hire some of the coaching staff.

  43. kendall December 18, 2011 5:15 am

I think I would be happy with any of those guys selected except for Banker. I think Chow will bring the most excitement to the program because he is a name guy.

  44. Pomai December 18, 2011 5:31 am

Just like Mack, JD is being set up to fail.

  45. LizKauai (iPad) December 18, 2011 5:55 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Now back to sleep.

Dunno what to think about these goings on.

    Go Warriors!

  46. d1shima December 18, 2011 6:14 am

    Great Morning All!

Hmmm…any reason Koetter got short shrift in this morning’s article?

Hope the cmte doesn’t let up as they “Take Five”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwNrmYRiX_o

  47. papajoe2 December 18, 2011 6:24 am

    Alll rryyte. Take 5.

  48. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 6:25 am

Those highly regarded QBs, receivers, and running backs that June Jones said would come to play for UH may actually be attracted to a “name coach” such as Norm Chow. Of course, putting together a good staff that is on the same page will be crucial. Ticket sales and fan interest will also get a boost.

  49. oldie December 18, 2011 6:37 am

After conducting all the interviews, I expect the committee to convey its thoughts to Jim Donovan. However, I hope the committee will give JD a lot of freedom in his selection.

I feel confident that JD will make a decision that will give UH the best chance to succeed both on the field and in the stands.

I also agree that the committee should grant an interview to Rich Miano. It’s the right thing to do.

  50. Annoddah Dave December 18, 2011 6:39 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Glad to see Norm Chow interviewed. The other time he applied he was not even considered by HY. Then you know what “hAPPENed” after that…

  51. oldie December 18, 2011 6:40 am

Sorry – “After they conduct all the interviews”

    N

  52. Pomai December 18, 2011 6:42 am

I thought that the so called committee was an advisory one, it seems more that they are a selection committee rather than a search committee.

  53. Annoddah Dave December 18, 2011 6:51 am

    Pomai,

Committee involvement appears to be the modus for UH since the FVA fiasco. Sometimes it helps to spread the “blame”. When JJ was selected, it was HY and 2 or 3 “committee” people who went to seek him out. Committees should never be the ones to select, there should always be someone where the “buck stops”. No one will remember the “committee”. Only the person who made the selection…like Dobelle who chose the “fumbler”!

  54. Hank December 18, 2011 6:55 am

Bad manners = Bad karma if they do not interview one of the current staff. Not the way to treat people.

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid December 18, 2011 7:05 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚

Good morning Hank, Dave, Pomai and oldie! Hopre you folks are having a good one today!

Love this place. Where else can a simple guy like me wake up to Dave Brubeck and Church’s fried chicken? I am still asleep and having a really good dream?

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid December 18, 2011 7:09 am

I wonder how many candidates will be interviewed when all is said and done and how many names will be forwarded to JD.

    Any idea, Mr. Tsai? Anyone?

“Am I” that should read above. Yep I must still be asleep.

  57. Bugaz December 18, 2011 7:09 am

Would think if Coach Chow is chosen, not only name recognition, but I think he will bring better recruits by closing deals with in home visits rather than ESPN recruiting for us. Heard that happened before.

  58. Hank December 18, 2011 7:10 am

    Good Morning DPK!

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid December 18, 2011 7:10 am

    Hopre? πŸ˜† sowwy again.

  60. Bugaz December 18, 2011 7:14 am

Hopefully the decision is made tonight or at least top two submitted to JD. Time is running out and we need two points to win! It’s all about clock management…let’s go!!!!

  61. Bryson December 18, 2011 7:17 am

That would be very disrespectful should this commitee not grant an interview to someone on the current staff…especially being that they both have long tenures at UH…My ? Is this what happens to our walk on program should Miano not be retained or become the head coach?

  62. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 7:17 am

Bottom line is that whoever is named the new HC will have to have a clear plan, put together a quality staff, recruit well, get the current players on board and with the program, implement what he says he’ll do, and most importantly, WIN.

  63. krump1_AKA_protector December 18, 2011 7:18 am

The fact that Dirk Koetter rates even a Skype interview is disturbing and concerning to me. If even half of the allegations brought up about him are even partially true, his character and judgement are in question and I question the Committee’s competence / philosophy for considering a guy that seems to have a “win at all cost mentality” and shows preferential treatment for “star” players.

  64. Bleed Green and White December 18, 2011 7:22 am

Okay, so among the five “finalists”, for the record, Norwood, Akina, Banker, Koetter and Chow; only one to my knowledge has any head coaching experience, that’s Koetter (@ Boise State and Arizona State).

Also “for the record”, UH beat his Sun Devils in the 2006 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. “Little ole” WAC crushed his PAC-10 talent.

And quite simply, nobody on this list has a resume that “stacks up” to Chow, not even close to tell you the truth.

Been part of a National Championships at BYU and USC, he can claim to my knowledge four Heisman Trophy winners, in Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

Not mention he mentored guys like Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Philip Rivers.

    Impressive, to say the least.

Banker, for some reason he’s made it this far because he apparently the front man for Oregon State’s recruiting efforts in Hawaii. However, Banker’s currently Defensive Coordinator for a 3-9 squad. Don’t really care of that’s in the PAC-12, it’s still 3-9.

OSU ranks #83 in total defense in the NCAA, that’s BELOW Tulane and Washington State and Hawaii for that matter @ #67.

    So, again, really?

Akina, one time standout @ Punahou. He used to hand it off to Mosi Tatupu (now he was a beast), spent 5 seasons as an assistant @ UH, then the rest of his long time coaching career “away”. Most of his experience is @ Arizona and with the Longhorns, no matter what anybody says, great football schools / programs.

However, at both of those schools, especially most recently with the Longhorns, I gotta ask:

“What has he done for the advancement of local kids playing college football?”

I mean, I don’t recall a single Hawaii high schooler on any Texas roster, not one.

In fact, he was on the Texas staff under Mack Brown when the Longhorns “wussed” out remember; withdrew and payed a fine to pull out of their game in Hawaii against UH. That was SO damn wimpy!!!!!

Norwood, very solid former UH football player (DB). Raised locally and graduated from Radford. I like that, proudly representing the 808. If I am not mistaken, Brian’s from the same Rams’ class as Kenny Niumataloo and Joe Seumalo (of course both of whom are excellent college football coaches). Seemingly nice guy, GREAT guy in fact I’m told, and current Associate head coach at Baylor. Guy has experience at Penn State, Navy and Richmond as well.

Downside though, he was demoted as Defensive Coordinator at Baylor.

Koetter, well, did anybody see Thursdays Jacksonville vs. Atlanta NFL game?

    Absolutely horrible performance!

Jags had 207 yds total offense, just 91 passing yards, against a Falcons defense that ranks 17th overall in the league.

Jacksonville’s offense under Koetter is dead last in the NFL, not kidding. Ranking #32 overall.

Passing game, dead last, #32, averaging 137 yds per game with only 11 TD passes, and THAT ranks tied @ #31 with the Colts.

Not to mention, I tried googling Koetter (and many of you should as well) but dang, I had NO idea the kind of baggage he left behind at Arizona State. Scary! Very similar in many ways to Joe Paterno’s exit from Penn State.

I gotta say, for UH and it’s “Search Committee” deciding so far NOT to interview either Rolovich and / or Miano in this process, well, that’s dead wrong. Period!

    That’s a travesty, a complete embarrassment!

If two products of the University of Hawaii, two former standout players, both graduates, both whom played the sport professionally and both whom have recent / quality years as Warrior assistants don’t even get interviews, well, then the system is flawed.

Meaning: if the system is flawed, than those running the system must be flawed as well.

We, as fans, supporters, many of us alumni, we cannot stand for such non-sense.

This is nothing against any of the current five finalists, but if UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan doesn’t give a damn about two of our “own”, then quite frankly I ask “Why should we give a damn about him?”

    Just saying…..

  65. VonAppen December 18, 2011 7:24 am

Utah football: A challenging season for Norm Chow

“Statistically, the Utes’ offense was nothing to be excited about with Utah ranking last in the Pac-12 in passing offense (171.58) and total offense (308.67) and ninth in scoring (24.58).

Overall, Utah’s offense wasn’t much better than UCLA’s under Chow’s guidance, with the Bruins averaging only 20 points in three seasons with Chow. Such a low scoring output resulted in criticism of Chow’s offense. Funny, though, how perspectives change.

At Utah, with a backup quarterback who had never played Division I football and season-ending injuries to other critical players, Chow’s ability to coax enough out of the offense to help the Utes win might be considered one of his better coaching performances.

Of course, what worked for the Utes could work against him, too, as perhaps the season’s turn of events and the adjustments might just help Chow land the head coaching job at Hawaii.”

  66. obachan December 18, 2011 7:29 am

I could be wrong but it is my understanding that JD is not involved in making the final decision as the choice of who the next coach remains with the committee

  67. krump1_AKA_protector December 18, 2011 7:35 am

If Chow comes in, I doubt he’ll let Rolo stay on as OC. I don’t even know if he would let Rolo stay as QB coach (although it might be effected as a concession), due to insecurity and arrogance. If Rolo leaves, it would be criminal because I feel he’s better than Chow, IMHO. It would be sickening if Rolo leaves and he proves this to all the doubters when he goes to another school and takes them to the heights when he’s allowed free rein.

  68. d1shima December 18, 2011 7:37 am

Is Donovan precluded from doing his own interview(s) before making/announcing a decision?

  69. Buffoman December 18, 2011 7:45 am

If those listed and the UH coach are the finalist, I’d say the best choice would be Chow. I believe there may be a chance he brings along “the other” UT coach to handle the defense and that young man may be his “Mentee”. Ibelieve that in this situation his age, desire to come home, and his recent “stumbles” as OC at his last three stops are things that would really push him to prove to all his naysayers that those were not all his doing and that his “if I was in charge things would have been different” are going to prove him right will change his approach.

The intangibles make him the best choice. He will shake up the coaching staff, I believe he will keep Tuioti If he wants to stay. Rolo’s staying would be by both men’s choosing following a conversation on offensive philosophy and coaching styles. The discussion would be with all cards on the table. I do believe that if Rolo stays because they truly see eye-to-eye on offense, he too would be a “mentee”. I also believe Cal Lee would remain in some capacity.

  70. bleedgreen December 18, 2011 8:00 am

Interesting Miano did not get to interview. Wonder why? He has a lot of local support. But maybe he is the one to beat and the five candidates were brought in to see how they stack up? Maybe window dressing. Who knows? Anyway, we don’t have all the information. The committee does. The one person on the committee I really trust to make a good selection is Rockne Freitas.

  71. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 8:03 am

Nothing personal, but I would retain one (Tuioti), with the HC bringing in his own hires. I really would like to see improvement with the offensive line and defensive secondary play, in particular. This will be one crucial hire from a position coach standpoint, along with offensive line.

Change doesn’t need to be a bad word if it’s done right.

  72. koakane December 18, 2011 8:04 am

wet morning everyone much rambling in the air.

day 7 time to finalize, decide then choose. next week should be more exciting waiting too see the announced hc.

adding my congrats to the senior warriors and wahines picking up their palapala yesterday. success in your future endeavors.

  73. WWF December 18, 2011 8:05 am

Maybe Coach Miano is already on the Committee’s short list to JD, based on his resume and didn’t need to interview him to see that he is a qualified candidate for the job, since he is already performing the job?

  74. WWF December 18, 2011 8:06 am

If I was on the committee, I would interview those to qualify them for the short list. Rich Miano would already be on my short list.

  75. anklebiters December 18, 2011 8:06 am

Interesting how UA did their clandestine HC search…private phones, commercial flights, secret meetings…..completely opposite of ASU’s tactics….

    http://www.azcentral.com/sports/ua/articles/2011/12/17/20111217arizona-wildcats-greg-byrne-pursuit-rich-rodriguez.html

  76. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 8:07 am

If Chow is hired, it would be a major coup if he can lure Kalani Sitake here as DC. Talking to people back in Utah though, Sitake may have his eyes on the BYU (where played) HC job down the road.

  77. Coach's Corner December 18, 2011 8:08 am

Chow should’ve just Skyped. Saved him the trouble.

Sorry Punahou. Banker is our new HC.

    (via Android)

  78. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 8:10 am

Mark Banker – OSU connection? Rockne Freitas?

  79. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 8:13 am

Not a Banker backer, but keep in mind June Jones’ coaching record of

    22 -36 -0 .348% before he came to UH.

Not to mention the fact that he had no experience with recruiting when he came here.

  80. Bleed Green and White December 18, 2011 8:15 am

Gang, could somebody please explain to me why Banker is a “good” candidate, I don’t get it?

    Really don’t?

  81. wafan December 18, 2011 8:16 am

No matter the head coach he has to do his job AND we, as fans, must do ours to support the team.

  82. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:21 am

    80,

I have no idea! If he’s chosen then you definitely know this whole selection process is rigged. How can he be better than the other candidates?

  83. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 8:22 am

    Bleed Green:

I don’t rate them. I just list them.

  84. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:22 am

Lol Id pick Miano over banker anyday!

  85. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:23 am

    Hey ST,

So who would be your pick for HC out of the bunch?

  86. d1shima December 18, 2011 8:24 am

Hawaii’s Defense isn’t the only one to blow coverage on a TE

  87. whitey December 18, 2011 8:26 am

very sad to read about the numbers that died in the philippine storm. it will not be a merry christmas for many of them, but hopefully they will carry on into a better 2012.

  88. whitey December 18, 2011 8:28 am

good morning tsaikos and enjoy the day.

  89. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:31 am

    86,

Yup I know of other schools too like uuuuh………….Oregon State. The school that Banker is coming from. Also the in which he is the DC for.

  90. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:31 am

“the school in which” *. (correction)

  91. RedZone December 18, 2011 8:34 am

So Wagner endorsed Akina. Cool I wouldn’t mind seeing a few Texas dbs on the team.

  92. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:36 am

    Redzone,

Who would you like to see a next HC out of the selected bunch?

  93. Old Diver December 18, 2011 8:39 am

I don’t think Akina would be able to raise the booster money it would take to buy Texas recruits. We would still be recruiting the same athletes we are recruiting now. No mo money, no mo 5 stars recruits.

  94. Coach's Corner December 18, 2011 8:43 am

    OSD- No. Yes.

Do I agree with his decision? Doesn’t matter anymore. Unless a better candidate appears, he’s made up his mind. No one going buck him.

    (via Android)

  95. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 8:49 am

    94,

That would be so obvious if he (Banker) is chosen. How is he a better candidate than any of the bunch? Everyone would know that if Banker is selected as HC, it was due to the ties he has with Freitas. That would be retarded!

  96. tommui December 18, 2011 8:51 am

I would imagine that Texas does not recruit intensively or even in passing for Hawaii players as they have more than enough 5**** players in Texas.

    Good Morning Hawaii!

  103. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 8:56 am

AKina is an intriguing candidate. He’s coached on both sides of the ball as a coordinator. He’s built up an extensive coaching resume after starting out as an assistant at UH under Tomey. The question is can he make the adjustment coming from a BMW program to a Ford program (no offense to Ford owners)?

  104. Last Call December 18, 2011 8:57 am

Chow would be the least of my choices. I’m really not onto this guy.

  108. Bryson December 18, 2011 9:07 am

Chow has proven he can only be successfuls with top tier talent…This was obvious when he couldn’t win @ UCLA…His offense is about as exciting as his demeanor there is a reason he has never been a HC…

  109. Bryson December 18, 2011 9:10 am

106 CC: if there is no connection because of OSU ties then why is Banker being considered his defenses have been nothing to rave about? This next head coach selection needs to be a proven winner wether they are a CO or have previous HC experience they need to have a track record of winning…otherwise we should have just kept Mack…

  110. puamamane December 18, 2011 9:15 am

With “Texas assistant head coach Duane Akina, Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood and Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker” all scheduled to “get in-person interviews with the six-member committee today” — how many hours are they scheduled to spend on Oahu? Or does Chow’s less-than-10hr in/out suggest something that other less-than-10hr in/outs don’t?

  111. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 9:15 am

    109,

Thank you! You couldn’t have said it any better!

  112. Old Diver December 18, 2011 9:16 am

The key to success is recruiting, period. June Jones found out that recruits don’t come because of a coaches name because the number one priority is closeness to home. For the five star recruits bonus money could also become a factor. Our success over the past thrifty years has come from evolving unconventional offenses. Pro-set, west coast ain’t gonna cut it.

  113. Old Diver December 18, 2011 9:19 am

My point earlier is no former coach from Texas will be able to recruit Texas players for Hawaii. Our recruiting will be similar to our current one.

  114. Manoa2 December 18, 2011 9:20 am

    108

Chow’s offense runs pretty good at Boise and BYU killed us with it. Mike Leach is going to bring it to Washington State too.

At UCLA and Utah, Chow had to dial back the pass– he was almost all run at Utah! But those were HC decisions and the result of injuries.

Next to the run and shoot, Chow runs the best passing offense and it is and has been copied all over the place.

Yep, I want to agree with your statement. Mack was named Recruiter of the Year by Rivals when he was with Tech. Where were all those connections? If he had them, it didn’t matter.

  119. madeinhawaii December 18, 2011 9:34 am

Thing is.. we don’t know who the rest of the candidates are… there might be a number of gems hidden in anonymity.

  120. Bryson December 18, 2011 9:36 am

#114:But it’s not Chow himself running the offense that’s my point, also Mike Leach runs an Air Raid attack alot more similar to the RNS…Chow’s offense is more of a Pro Style offense…

  123. Bryson December 18, 2011 9:42 am

I would have to say besides Miano, I wouldn’t mind seeing Akina as the head coach…He has the intensity and passion needed to fire the kids up…I just hope that he decides to keep most of the current staff at least for another season…especially Rolo if what they said was true about his offense being handcuffed I’d like to see how he calls games given free reign

  124. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 9:43 am

I would have liked Akina. He can work with the talent he’s got and make them play beyond their capabilities. Great motivator (Chip off the Tomey Block) Excellent networker. Good ties with the local public and business communities. Akamai. Organized. Always open to ideas.

What I’m wondering is how the other interviews seemed to be public info, while the Chow interview was more of a secret mission.

  131. cocobean December 18, 2011 9:54 am

From the list of interviewees, Chow would create the most buzz both + and -.

He and Koetter are about even when judging solely on resume. Banker and Akina are 25 year coaching vets, Norwood is the up and comer.

Sorry to say, no one on the current staff can match the others in terms of resume. Only Shaw has seen how things are run at other schools. Rolo’s youth and lack of experience probably precludes him from being interviewed.

But in Miano’s case, since when is loyalty held against you? Started here and never looked anywhere else. Withdrew the last time to support Mack’s bid for HC. He is proud to say he bleeds green and white. Interview him.

BTW. I in no way endorse Miano for HC. I have my doubts about his ability to run the whole show, as I do about the other candidates. This is a CEO position. The right guy must have organizatonal skills as well leadership and coaching ability.

  132. kev-1 December 18, 2011 9:55 am

A Banker hire would turn off a lot of people. In a climate of waivering fans (not me, btw) you need to be extremely cautious.

  133. LizKauai (macbook) December 18, 2011 9:57 am

    Yeah- whoever…

In the meantime, Go Phins, Skins and Pack!!!

  134. kev-1 December 18, 2011 9:58 am

cocobean . . . I agree about the buzz about Chow. I could imagine ESPN being all over a Chow to UH story. Whereas any of the other candidates might draw the low profile, two paragraph so and so named UH coach article.

  135. Manoa2 December 18, 2011 10:00 am

Air Raid is a form of Chow’s offense. It is why he was offered at Kentucky. Leach was also an ex BYU guy– play book is very similar and plays have the same names. The Boise offense ha seen the basic BYU multiple st offense with Norm’s playbook. BYU’s offense in our game was Nor’s with plays called by Doman the QB coach under Norm and ex BYU QB fro Norm’s days.

  136. kev-1 December 18, 2011 10:01 am

Looks like the Bills were big time pretenders this year. Fitzpatrick got that huge contract and has been stinking it up since.

  137. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 10:01 am

Sadly, there is a danger of staying in one place too long, (in business, coaching, teaching, whatever). I’ve personally made that mistake in staying at one company too long. Thought I was a “valued” worker, but found out otherwise the hard way.

Former USC assistant Rocky Seto had a similar experience, turning down the DC job at UW under Sarkisian because he was loyal and “comfortable” at USC. In comes Lane Kiffin, with his dad, and Seto is forced to take a quality control job with the Seahawks for a tenth of what he earned at USC.

  138. kev-1 December 18, 2011 10:02 am

Come to think of it, there has to be a reason why Chow was butting heads with Neuheisel at UCLA. Maybe he wanted Chow to be more conservative than he wanted to be.

  139. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 10:05 am

If Chow is hired and wants a new DC, I could see him offering Seto the position if he was interested in leaving Seattle and Pete.

Last I read, he was promoted to Safeties coach. Not sure how much that pays or where he stands on the promotion ladder.

  140. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 10:09 am

    kev-1,

it has been widely speculated by media etc that Chow was constrained by Neuheisel and the 2 kinda butted heads. Hmm, this sounds familiar…

The above was at the very least inferred at the press conference by Neuheisel introducing Mike Johnson as the new OC.

  141. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 10:13 am

Regarding Rocky Seto, it’s interesting to note that Ken Norton Jr. has moved ahead of him with the Seahawks as the linebackers coach while Seto is an assistant to the secondary coach. Seto was already coaching the secondary at USC when Norton came in as a GA with the Trojans. Nonetheless, Seto is underutilized now and could be a gem as DC (coaching the secondary) for a mid major such as UH.

  142. tommui December 18, 2011 10:16 am

    MattyBoy #124

(Tsai) mentioned the candidates … are pretty much the finalists. Bummer.

Who do you have in mind that you would want as a coach considering the amount that we would paid probably would not exceed $750-800,000?

  143. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 10:17 am

Coaching the secondary is not the easiest position to coach with everyone spread out all over the field.

Just watched a Tim Tebow highligt video of his Florida days. Why did they have to use clips from their game with UH back in 08? All of those missed tackles…..:-(

  144. expat December 18, 2011 10:17 am

The UH job has some real positives for potential candidates. It is not a rebuilding job like JJ walked into — this is a team that has won at least six games per year for 6 years now.

The is a good core of players returning and as been pointed out this last season was a few plays away from being a 9 win season.

The incoming coach could reasonably expect immediate success next year.

  145. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 10:19 am

    tommui,

was thinking of punahou *mafia* to save the day as per WsupDoc’s comments the other day.

  146. papajoe2 December 18, 2011 10:22 am

Just like in politics, I hate when people bad mouth a candidate just so their “boy” can get in. To the blog dogs, praise your choice and build him up by what he does. Don’t try to bring down another candidate and sling mud in their face unless he is another guy like the Penn State assistant. I’m sure the search committee already have gone through all the coaches personal/criminal history.

  147. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 10:24 am

I would be interested in seeing what Mr. Chow could do. A seasoned and well-respected OC who’s had great success throughout his years of coaching. Yes, he does have his failures as well, but surely he had more success than failure. Then again, you never know until he actually starts as HC, he can turn out to be a total genius, or a complete dud. You never know. Once again, I think I would like to see Mr. Chow as HC.

  148. cocobean December 18, 2011 10:24 am

#142. That salary range is a pay raise for all except Koetter who is probably out of a job at season’s end.

Not choosing but predicting Chow or Norwood if that’s the final list.

Chow, decorated local boy comes home. Norwood, national trend – give the keys to someone under 50.

  149. papajoe2 December 18, 2011 10:27 am

Who is to say that UH will NOT interview any of the current coaches. The current coaches are here and are more accessable to the interview process. The search committee may already have decided, by their track record here, that they are or not in the future plans as a head coach. I still think Miano is in the hunt, although he is not my choice at all.

  150. papajoe2 December 18, 2011 10:32 am

I, as a Warrior fan, will support whoever the committee decides as the head coach and hope for the best. At least for the first couple of years. If the new hc burns all his timeouts in the 1st qtr. or has numerous delay of game penalties, and continues not to progress, then I’m sure we will be hearing it from the fans.

Old and I mean OLD boy network doesn’t understand the concept of “youngest and brightest”.

Again while the rest of the country moves forward and embraces this concept in many areas, Hawaii is content on dinosaurs and small mind and old time thinking.

  158. postmanke December 18, 2011 10:59 am

Norwood would be an interesting and exciting pick. Talent will want to be around him. But the way they are going about bizness something tells me Miano is JD’s guy. Probably the most safest pick out of the bunch.

  159. krump1_AKA_protector December 18, 2011 10:59 am

    re: Akina.

For all those that are enamored with him, let me pose a hypothetical situation. If Coach Mack had had the identical Texas talent as Akina in the last 3 years and Mack was DC of Texas, do you think for one minute that Mack would’ve been as pathetic an underachiever as Akina has been? If Coach Mack had as much talent on the Hawaii team as Akina had in Texas, do you believe for one minute that UH would not have been even more lethal? Coach Mack would’ve still been here and by the way, Coach Mack essentially lost his job because Tomey and Miano didn’t really do theirs. And do you really think that if Akina was here as DC for the last 3 years instead of Aranda & Mack that the D would be so much better? I think not. Mack was and is superior to Akina, so please stop it. As others have said, I scratch my head that anybody would find Banker desirable. If Miano is not in consideration, I hope it’s Norwood because at least there’d be a chance Rolo would stay on as OC.

  160. Dan-O December 18, 2011 11:08 am

To me, the bigger question is if a current UH coach is not selected, than can any of these non-UH coaches do MORE, with LESS.

They are all coming from BCS schools (or pros) with huge budgets. Can they still do the job when they lack the huge budget and resources?

  161. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 11:13 am

HC hasn’t even been named and people are slamming this candidate or the other. Hawaii’s a different place, that’s for sure. Is it safe to say that the “Old Boys Network” doesn’t exist back on the mainland? Don’t fool yourself, there are people behind most BCS programs with money and influence who the public doesn’t see or know about. Athletic Directors can be a fickle bunch, who give in to these “Old Boys” more than we know. Look at ASU, UCLA among other BCS schools.

Norm Chow has not managed to land a head coaching job in spite of his impressive resume. I’ll go out on a limb and say that it would be ignorant to believe that race has not played a factor. Yes, he has a rough edge to him, but so do many head coaches. Just reality.

Just looking for information. Is the R&S the only offense that doesn’t rely on either a punishing running game or a run first philosophy to work?

  164. jkjones December 18, 2011 11:15 am

This has to be Norm Chow’s moment….

Resume-wise there is no one better suited from the current list–achievement-wise or any otherwise. Hopefully, Chow conveyed a sense of home-spun passion in his quest to be Hawaii’s top gun. He is a local boy with roots and if he came across as sincerely demonstrative in emoting his desire to “give back to the community of his birth”, that should weigh heavily in the committee’s final choice. Its a noble theme with convincing sentiments.

Our program needs someone to break its fall, stabilize its platform and regrow in recognition. so, imho, we need 5-solid years from MAC’s successor. Thus, at 65, Chow’s age should not be a deciding factor. Norm Chow is a very selectable candidate.

Each coach has their successes and failures. In life we all do as well.

Who ever is selected we all should support them by selling out the stadium like the old days.

Banker, Akina, and Norwood should not be hired for their DC schemes.

Chow and Koetter should not be hired for their OC schemes or systems.

The next UH coach needs to be a CEO. We all want to go back to a BCS bowl.

The next coach most important roles are: hiring quality assistants, seeking the private sectors financial support (to update the facilities), and then recruiting.

We will never be a consistent contender unless these things are addressed with this hire.

    Believe It!

Well, I think that the fans need to take a “half-full” attitude to this. Don’t write off someone before he’s had a chance to prove his worth, IMHO. It’s obvious that the UH job is going to have to attract a “special” person due to the salary being offered – $700K – $750K. That’s just a little more than what coordinators make at BCS schools. Again, June Jones revived the program on a salary of $300K or so.

  178. madeinhawaii December 18, 2011 11:46 am

    Old School Dave..

Didn’t JJ double that on his second time around through the boosters? I think 300 back then wasn’t all that bad… that would mean 600 in 2007 wan’t all that bad… today it’s a mil… everything doubles just about every 7 years, it seems.

  179. postmanke December 18, 2011 11:46 am

173 absolutely! In the NFL you can get 1 or 2 first round draft picks a year. In college you can get as many first round drafts picks as you can get. If you have a candidate that has the belief that no one will out work him, thats probably your guy.

MIH: Yeah, I think JJ went up to $800K or so, and some people got all jacked out of shape (particularly the casual fans or those not even interest in UH football).

If people are going to complain about coaching salaries, then maybe they should become coaches too (pop warner, high school, college GA, full-time assistant, etc).

Reality here is that Hawaii salaries, in general, don’t keep up with those on the continent.

Does JJ own a house here on Oahu or on the Big Island?

  182. Really December 18, 2011 11:55 am

“Loyalty” is a very special thing and becoming rarer in today’s society. Sad but true. As far as Miano’s “loyalty” let’s cut to the chase. He stays here at all costs mainly because football is his second job and not his highest paying one. His secondary’s usually rate from bad to terrible, tackle poorly and his time as a co-defensive coordinator with Lumpkin rates as some of the worst defense the University of Hawaii has ever played in the school’s history. He was immediately demoted back to DB coach after getting torched beyond belief.

His recruiting is poor and although his walk on to NFL story is a story of great courage and toughness and desire his open desire to create more stories just like himself costs us in recruiting and the development of scholarship players. In ten years his recruiting resume has some good ones, but the overall body of work is not dynamic in any way, in fact pedestrian is best and his secondary recruiting is poor at best. Either that or he’s recruited good DBs but can’t coach them or both.

No body tries harder to get walk-ons on the field at all costs (to the detriment of the program) to continually promote his past glories and his current role as “walk on director”. He was a great player, represented Hawaii on the highest level, has done incredible things for our children and bleeds green. He does NOT however have even an inkling of the resume or performance on the field as a position coach to deserve the HC position just because he’s survived for years in offensive first staffs where poor defense is overlooked and poor recruiting was hidden by high powered offenses.

#172 BIK: I heard that Utah is planning to expand their stadium from 45,000 to 70,000 (it was built with that in mind). BYU’s stadium at 65,000 is the only thing that makes them feel good these days whenever they get into an argument with Utah fans.

  184. kev-1 December 18, 2011 11:57 am

SEE!!! If we had a student representative on the committee, he would have already leaked some information and we would know more about what is actually going on.

    or the Nene Birds

  190. kev-1 December 18, 2011 12:12 pm

I’m sorry, I guess that would be Myna Birds or Nene Goose

  191. Bowwar December 18, 2011 12:17 pm

Chow’s time has come and gone…I don’t think he is the viable candidate that he once was. I agree that Koetter has baggage that needs to be cleared up…Not good.

That being said, I think it will get down to Akina, Norwood, and Banker.

Akina is a solid pick, but I question the type of offense he will bring.

Norwood is young and will be open to bringing a new brand of football to the islands.

Banker is intriguing…I like that he is expousing an “entertaining” brand of football

Tough call…I prefer Banker at this point with hopes he brings Cavanaugh back to the islands.

  192. Bowwar December 18, 2011 12:22 pm

#182 – I agree, Miano has done alot for UH and himself, but where he has yet to prove himself is as a Coach. As I have stated previously, if ALL of the current assistants did their jobs, Mack would still be head coach. The only one of the assistants I’d retain would be Tuioti. Rolo would be a consideration, but it will depend on the new HC’s offensive philosophy and preference. Miano might merit a consideration as “recruiting coordinator” since its paid by Na Koa and replace Lumpkin.

  193. al December 18, 2011 12:22 pm

I find it amusing that so many naysayers are out there who have never met any of the prospects nor have any clue of what they are capable of.

I hope the under the bus tossers have at least played or coached to become self proclaimed experts.

  202. Derek December 18, 2011 12:54 pm

Really, have you played college football or coached at that level?

I think it is best to just sit back and see what the process goes. I do think, however, that Miano will get the last interview. That’s just my opinion. Who knows will get the job? In the meantime, recruiting is paramount. Any recruits this weekend?

  203. jkjones December 18, 2011 12:54 pm

i find it sadly amusing that fans need to be more qualified in football playing experience and coaching to voice their opinions on a UH fansite than the committee that is selected to hire UH’s head coach.

  204. jm2375 December 18, 2011 1:01 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

    Happy Sunday!

Attended my cousin’s funeral this morning. UH has lost a long-time season-ticket holder for football and volleyball and active member of the UHAA.

    And life goes on…

  205. jkjones December 18, 2011 1:01 pm

@ 182 makes a valid point on UH coaches moonlighting. Not all, but an alarming number.

As the old axiom in agency law reads, “an agent cant serve two masters”.

I believe it applies to a college program that is designated to pull the train.

It remains a disturbing issue that should be addressed by Donovan. Otherwise, it will continue for a myriad of reasons. Some selfish in nature and others, simply to survive.

  206. LizKauai (macbook) December 18, 2011 1:06 pm

    Heavenly Consolation, jm2375…

  207. Bryson December 18, 2011 1:21 pm

So let’s say Norm Chow does become our next coach…He’s spent his life in the coaches boxes will he do the same as Head Coach or will he be on the field?

  208. Shoko December 18, 2011 1:24 pm

We have heard names like Chow, Koetter, Banker, Norwood, Akina, Miano etc, but it was stated that there were 43 applicants? It would be interesting to know who the others applicants were.

  209. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 1:36 pm

Probably JD will wow us with an unexpected GREAT choice…

and Tsai knew it all along…

  210. MattyBoy December 18, 2011 1:58 pm

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 2:14 pm

Just read that Chow had 2 interviews already. Ok…

  213. kev-1 December 18, 2011 2:23 pm

210 . . . because it was widely reported that one of the applicants requested anonymity. However, that person may have already surfaced and anonymity is gone. Otherwise, I don’t think there are many that think some secret mega name has yet to have been revealed.

  214. kev-1 December 18, 2011 2:24 pm

Come on . . . interviews must be pau by now. Where’s the rumors and speculation and reports coming from the interviews? Should be about time someone says they heard from a little birdie or something, right?

  215. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 2:27 pm

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Norm Chow’s interview yesterday was his second one. He’s the only candidate to have had a second interview since the job opened up.

  216. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 2:27 pm

  221. tommui December 18, 2011 2:36 pm

    Ipu Man #219

The purpose of the Committee was to sort out the applicants – those allegedly worthy and those not worthy – I assume my application was rejected – and so those names will not be revealed to protect the innocent!

Even those names applying for a judiciary office are not made public – except the ones that made the cut.

  222. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 2:37 pm

Just trying to add some salt and pepper to this long

    drawn out process.

  223. kev-1 December 18, 2011 2:39 pm

For all we know, 38 of those applicants were guys like . . .

Frank, who works the night shift at Walmart who played pop-warner football and swears he has the answers to UH’s football woes.

Kevin, the teacher who thinks he is a destined to be a football coach but never played a down in his life.

Derek, the psychologist who insists he knows how to get into the players minds to will wins.

Sheila, the powerlifter from Nanakuli who thinks that she could rough the team up if given the opportunity.

and so on and so on . . .

  224. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 2:39 pm

    JD, select the best candidate…

And if Tommui is it, yea!

  225. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 2:40 pm

    Sheila sounds worthy…

  226. kev-1 December 18, 2011 2:47 pm

she would be my choice too

  227. Old School Dave December 18, 2011 2:47 pm

Kev 1 – that’s funny. I once overheard an argument between two people where one guy said, “Eh, I took a psychology class in college, so I know how people think.” Ok……………..

  228. Derek December 18, 2011 2:48 pm

There was a mystery applicant who’s name was not mentioned because he’s still working for a team. I have a suspicion, but I don’t want to say his name either because he might be the one. I could be wrong. I don’t even know if this person actually applied. I will say however that this person has Hawaii ties. We’ll see! Let the committee do their work. Seems like there’s some secrecy going on. I wonder if all of these interviewees are just window dressing and going through the motion. I have a feeling they know who they want.

Me, I want a younger guy who is very energetic and openly public and sells the program. It’s all about putting a good product on the field, put seats in the stands, win a lot of games, graduates his players, and run a clean program, period. It’s definitely a 24/7 job 365 days out of the year.

Good All-State team write up. There’s some good talent on the DI level, including a LB, TE, OL, DT, S, WR and a few others. I’m sure the coaching staff are full aware of them so I don’t have to mention their names. There are some talented Juniors too for next years recruiting class. The big question is their academic standing and if they are an NCAA qualifier. Some are and some probably aren’t.

  229. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 18, 2011 2:51 pm

    I vote for Sheila

  230. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 2:59 pm

    No mystery applicant.

Brian Norwood was interviewing at Penn State at the time, so it had be hush-hush. But his candidacy there is out of the bag, so to speak.

  231. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 3:00 pm

Chow’s interview last night was his only one with the committee.

  232. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 3:01 pm

Now there were a couple of former well-known NFL coaches who inquired, but there interest was not considered to be serious.

Consider the five who interviewed to be the finalists.

  233. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 3:02 pm

Head coaches always are on the field.

Wel, I take that back. There was that Texas A&I guy who coached from the bleachers. But that was just weird.

  234. AlaWai December 18, 2011 3:03 pm

    WB is like this.

“A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom and gloom pessimist.

Just to see what would happen, on the twins’ birthday their father loaded the pessimist’s room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room he loaded with horse manure.

That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting amid his new gifts crying bitterly.

“Why are you crying?” the father asked.

“Because my friends will be jealous, I’ll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff, I’ll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken.” answered the pessimist twin.

Passing the optimist twin’s room, the father found him dancing for joy in the pile of manure. “What are you so happy about?” he asked.

To which his optimist twin replied, “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

  235. Ipu Man December 18, 2011 3:05 pm

wot? “Now there were a couple of former well-known NFL coaches who inquired, but there interest was not considered to be serious.”

    Like Jon Gruden? et al?????????????????????????????????

    ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  236. Jason December 18, 2011 3:06 pm

For all we know, 38 of those applicants were guys like . . .

Uh oh, I’m getting mixed up with Kevin?!?! πŸ˜‰

  237. Stephen Tsai December 18, 2011 3:07 pm

    lol.

    No, not Gruden.

If Gruden were coming back, it would be for a big-time job. Not for a job in the … what’s UH’s conference again? I keep forgetting.

What was that QB’s name? Ritchie? Something like that.

    It was kind of funny.

My favorite was Schnellenberg when he was at Florida Atlantic. He didn’t even pretend to coach. He didn’t wear headphones on the sideline. Hey, why act?

  275. tommui December 18, 2011 4:52 pm

I’m guessing that the Committee feels that their job is to filter out the applications for head coach. And those that meet whatever criteria the committee feels is needed, will be given an interview. And no interview would be given to applicants who do not meet their criteria, even if it was a pro-forma interview.

So I guess people like Miano and Lumpkin didn’t make the cut. But they should have been given an interview as they had worked so hard for our UH football team over the years.

I hope that Jim Donovan – as it would be his legacy (or his neck!) – should be given the absolute discretion to choose any one of the successful applicants.

  276. Buffoman December 18, 2011 5:04 pm

Tommui… or maybe they were very professionally informed that they were not in the “top 5” that were to be interviewed, which would have been better than giving one false hope by allowing them to “go through the motion” with an inconsequentional interview.

That may have been disappointing to the two, but if I was in the position, I’d prefer that as opposed to hold out false hope.

Al, whoever is ultimately selected, it would be terrific if he was announced tomorrow. UH could get on with firming up the staff, finishing up the main push for recruits and get us all excited once again.

  283. papajoe2 December 18, 2011 5:18 pm

Watching Warrior basketball. Rozitis needs to get his hands up. Its by his knees, playing defense like a guard. By the time he bends his knees to jump and gets his hands up, too late. If his hands are up then the basket is just a few feet/inches away and also ready to block or alter the other teams shot. Otherwise, why be 7′?

    Pride,

I guess 2mil is worth the pressure of following Joe Pa.

Some look at it as a steep challenge, others look at it as an exceptional opportunity. I think that Brian is a lonshot. Odds will get better IF the rumors are true that Pitt will announce Mario Cristobal as their new head coach tomorrow morning. I think that Cristobal was near the top of the list for the Penn State job.

I do hope that whoever does make the choice will have the ala’s to tell the public that they are the ones who make the selection and not lay it on JD if he in fact is over ridden in the matter.

  287. Pride. December 18, 2011 5:38 pm

I think that the public would have wanted for Miano to at least be granted an interview. Then the public would have felt like they had an investment in the selection process. Would have been better for recruiting too. You could have told prospects that two former players were interviewed for the position. Playing for Hawaii doesn’t prevent you from being successful in the football industry.

Would be great if Norwood could get that Penn State job. That would make former players at Navy, Army, SMU, Penn State, and FCS’ Eastern Illinois.

Just imagine if the committee can’t come to a consensus, and end up leaving the interim coach in for a season, like North Carolina did. Then that would make six head coaches at either FBS or FCS schools.

  292. cocobean December 18, 2011 5:59 pm

    #269. My guesss.

    Chow – 2

    Norwood – 2

    Akina – 1

Pretty confident Tuioti’s job is safe no matter who is selected. It would raise a red flag for me if he weren’t.

  293. Bugaz December 18, 2011 6:04 pm

I guess I am part of the public, so if the committee see it fit not to interview Miano I would be fine with that. With his resume and being close to the program, I know the committee has a good idea about Miano. I say give Mack an interview, didn’t he work hard too! Just kidding

If you think the Rainbows aren’t tough just ask anyone who played before Von Appen. Taase Faumui, Ma’a Tanuvasa, the 3 Noga brothers, David Maeva, Nuu Faaola, and coaches Tomey and Wagner will tell you nothing is sissy about the Rainbow Warriors. It’s the pride of the player representing the people of Hawaii. Geev’em.

  348. Bleed Green and White December 19, 2011 12:09 am

Did a lot of reading today, and some soul searching regarding the current state of football at the University of Hawaii.

With all the names that have been made public over the past few days, I took some time to read up on all five candidates that were interviewed over the weekend.

To me, there’s two candidates I just don’t get.

Banker and Koetter. Now I understand they both come from brand name programs collegeiately, and Koetter, in fact, is currently OC for the NFL’s Jaguars, but…….

I’m finding it hard to get excited about two prospects from organizations that are in major slumps right now.

Oregon State went 3-9 in 2011 and the Beavers were ranked #83 in the country in total defense.

Jacksonville’s offense right now is anemic, horrible even, ranked dead last in the NFL. Dang, in there last game they threw for 91 yards.

Again I ask, “Why is anybody excited about such possibilities?”

With that said, Duane Akina, since his original departure from the 808 after five years under Bob Wagner, I’m yet to figure out where the Hawaii part of him stood. Not many recruits with local ties in his 14 seasons at Arizona, not ONE to my finding did he ever pull into Texas in his 11 years.

Those three, in my opinion, is my hope, are out.

That leaves Brian Norwood and Norm Chow. Both, I think, we can call true candidates with Hawaii ties.

Chow, in his 40+ years of coaching and a resume that’s second to none, has always recruited Hawaii. And back to his resume….WOW! Part of three National Championships and mentor to 4 Heisman Trophy winners. Not to mention guys like Jim McMachon and Hall of Famer Steve Young. Again, WOW!

Norwood, can’t find anything negative about the guy. Nothing.

Family, God, Team, Family….Any way you mix or match it, it comes out winner.

Not worried about age or anything (46), but I withhold all out excitement because after his only seasons as DC, our Radford graduate had those responsibilities taken from him.

After all is said and done, and after my own personal process of elimination, I’m at a point where I’d be most excited if Norm Chow was named later this week as our new University of Hawaii head football coach.

Norm Chow, head coach, Warrior football!!!!!

If CC is correct, the fix is in then Akina should be our next coach…

Thanks for making me laugh with this early morning joke about how the people on this committee are supposedly making their decisions on the next ‘CEO’ of the football program based on their high school alma mater.

The behind the scenes networking does not work that way when you are tasked with making a critical decision of this nature. Maybe in the past could decisions be made in a mickey mouse way like that. McMackin was hired quite differently because of everything that happened to be going on at the time.

Why a committee rather than just the UHAD making a decision in a vacuum all by himself? Because this decision is too big for one person to make. UH is not rolling in money where if they make a mistake, they can just fire and hire someone else 3 years down the road. ‘Fit’ can be defined in many ways. Fit with the administration, fit with the vision of the program, fit with influential movers and shakers, fit with the community, fit with what the AD is looking for. Yet, you do not want too many cooks in the kitchen spoiling the soup. So certain key administrators will be in the loop through the process but be hands off for the most part unless something really stinks.

The committee is meant to find the most qualified candidates who meet the MQ and desirable qualifications of the position description as well as additional criteria set by the AD. They will then make a number of prioritized recommendations which the AD can go along with and rubber stamp or actually make his own decision. Donovan at that point will be the one who makes the call. The position was advertised as continuous recruitment. Realistically, there is a limit because of the signing period for recruits. The hope is that there will be a decision, offer, and acceptance made with at least one of the candidates in this round.

I know there was mention about how it would be good manners to extend interviews to the ones currently on the staff that applied. The problem as we’ve seen here on this blog is that it is a polarizing issue. A few feel the entire staff needs to be let go to begin fresh. A few feel those individuals did their time and should be given a shot. A few don’t like certain names but are okay with others on the staff who did not apply. You have to be naive to think Donovan and individuals on the committee did not know this. Which is why Miano or Lumpkin either did not make the cut, OR any interviews even if pro forma will be kept on the low down in order to prevent Donovan’s and Greenwood’s email from overflowing with additional messages.

Those of us sitting outside this decision making process can opine on whatever we want including who we feel would be the best fit. In the end, it doesn’t matter because we do not have all the facts. The people sitting on the selection committee as well as Donovan have more than enough contacts to thoroughly vet each of the finalists and dig up whatever they need in order to make an informed decision. The fine line they do have to walk is gauging the sentiment of boosters. I’ve already mailed JD that even though Koetter was my 1st preference, that he should not be considered because questions will always exist about what took place at ASU. Doesn’t matter if he provides documentation which clears him because people have made up their minds already. UH does not need such distractions at this juncture. The decision has to be made based on what is good for the entire university and by extension, the state of Hawaii.

I was expecting today’s paper to have way more about the coach search. I guess information is really tight.

Al . . . you suggested that Banker is the most apt to keep Rolo? I’m not sure. I know he said “exciting offense” but really, those that incorporate the RNS tend to come from the Mouse/JJ circle. I don’t think Banker does. Unless of course he has his own vision for offense and thinks Rolo would be able to run it, but then again, Rolo would probably not be the OC of an offense that he is new to.

LOL . . . you say back room politics is not part of it? I disagree. Maybe not as blatantly as some suggest, but still a part of it.

I am still not sure how this thing is working. Does anyone know if JD has been in on the interviews with the committee? Or will he be given the choice to announce publicly without even having interviewed the candidates? ST, you know?

I didn’t get his name so that was Untermann on the radio??

  378. RedZone December 19, 2011 7:40 am

I am thinking maybe the interim hc could be the new coaches first hire.

New HCs like to go after strong recruiters.

  381. papajoe2 December 19, 2011 7:44 am

#364, 58+% says Brian Norwood would be a good coach for Penn State.

  382. cocobean December 19, 2011 7:44 am

Tuioti and Miano are the lead men in recruiting. I thnk the new HC will retain them.

  383. kev-1 December 19, 2011 7:45 am

374 . . . true. I think many that wanted a change were expecting something completely different. Some wanted a complete overhaul, which is likely what they will get. Others (and I guess I would lean more to this direction) just felt the leadership was in question, but enjoyed the system and core staff that we had. I guess I am one who will be forced to deal with a completely new UH football. Not really what I was hoping.

I guess I should have seen that coming, as the continuity approach that they tried when JJ left resulted in two steps back.

Still, the UH coaching staff has always been one loaded with local ties. The fans appreciate that. If you bring in a Koetter or a Banker, that goes out the window. I really think we would need to get to know an entirely new, non-Hawaii staff. That is bothering me. You bring in Chow, and we can be hopeful of seeing some names we know.

I’ll be the first to admit that the way this is working out is not what I hoped and that ST was right . . . be careful what you ask for.

  384. Let Donovan Choose December 19, 2011 7:45 am

    Yes, that was Kent Untermann.

  385. RedZone December 19, 2011 7:46 am

I read that Koetter was a good mentor for young coaches so if he is selected I hope he retains and mentors Rolo.

  386. RedZone December 19, 2011 7:47 am

KU had some strong words for JD and the committee.

  387. kev-1 December 19, 2011 7:47 am

Does anyone know if the VonAppen years were coaches of his own, or were they local boys too? I can’t recall.

  388. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2011 7:49 am

Mostly mainland guys I think. Benjamin had ties to HPA on the BI.

  389. RedZone December 19, 2011 7:50 am

I like how Arkansas State went after Malzahn. They had backing all the way to the governor. They had a point man whose mission was to get it done.

  390. ai-eee-soos December 19, 2011 7:52 am

    # 387.

The only local guy, that I can remember, was Doug Semones (sp), Kahuku High.

    the rest was von app’s.

A quick test as to why Miano wasn’t granted for an interview:

Are there any other programs (from D-1 to the Pee Wee level) begging to have Rich as their next head coach?

    No.

    Sorry Miano fans.

  392. kev-1 December 19, 2011 8:00 am

391 . . . for that matter, is there anyone else clamoring for Banker or Akina as their next HC? I know Chow, Koetter, and Norwood have been considered.

  393. ai-eee-soos December 19, 2011 8:02 am

    # 392. ditto

  394. RedZone December 19, 2011 8:03 am

Ken Margerum, Don Lindsey and when he hired Wally English it was the beginning of the end.

  395. kev-1 December 19, 2011 8:04 am

What I would worry about is say UH offers Norwood and he accepts, then Penn State offers? He can’t turn down Penn State can he? Then we would end up with the second choice, and no one likes being the second choice.

  396. Coach's Corner December 19, 2011 8:06 am

Put Miano, Banker, Akina together and let any other program choose. Two questions will be asked the most:

    Who’s this Miano?

    What has he done?
