Kekaula: 'These are exciting times'

KITV sports anchor Robert Kekaula’s once-upon-a-time dreams have been realized.

“These are exciting times,” said Kekaula, 46, who accepted an offer from Oceanic to serve as play-by-play announcer for Warrior football telecasts. “UH football is the biggest game in town. This is something I’ve always had a desire to do.”

Kekaula was a television and radio color analyst for 18 UH football seasons before receiving a call from Dan Schmidt, Oceanic’s general manager and executive producer for UH sportscasts.

Oceanic is taking over the production of UH sportscasts from KFVE. Jim Leahey had served as KFVE’s primary play-by-play announcer for a quarter century.

“I knew Dan when I was working at KHNL,” Kekaula said during an interview with the WB last night at KITV. “We had a great working relationship. When he got on board at Oceanic, he gave me a call and asked me if I would be interested (in becoming play-by-play announcer). I said: ‘If you’re running things, I’m very interested.’ He’s a go-getter. He’s a doer. I like to think I drink from the same cup.”

Kekaula added: “I’ve learned a lot from Bobby Curran. We worked together for 13 years. I learned a lot from Bob Hogue. I learned a lot from Don Robbs. He first hired me. I owe a lot to Howard Dashefsky, Larry Beil and Matt Pinto. But I do what I do today for a living because I watched Jim Leahey growing up. I’m fortunate to call him a friend and a mentor my entire adult life.”

Kekaula will use vacation time to work the games.

“I’m sure it won’t be easy but my general manager (KITV’s Andrew Jackson) and news director (Genie Garner) are gracious enough to let me try this,” Kekaula said.

gonna miss Kekaula on the radio with Curran. they were good together.

wonder who Curran will get to fill the spot.

i can tell you who i don’t want to hear on the radio, but i will keep my mouth shut. momma always said if you can’t say anything good then don’t say anything.

    Right on, Robert:

KITV sports anchor Robert Kekaula’s once-upon-a-time dreams have been realized.

    Hi, gang!

    Kekaula! Gotta read yesterday’s blog…

  10. al July 19, 2011 12:23 am

    congratulations big guy.

not too many of us get to fulfill our childhood dreams.

i know you have mentioned this in passing that this was your wish from small kid time.

fairy tales can come true and it happened to you!!!

  11. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:23 am

Finding a replacement for Kekaula on radio is going to be an interesting search. Not much time.

  12. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:24 am

The first Oceanic-UH football telecast will be the UC Davis game.

  13. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:26 am

C’mon. Admit it. You were surprised.

  14. Slugger July 19, 2011 12:29 am

Good night, gang! Just can’t keep the lids open to read tonight. Sleep tight.

    Congrats to Robert Kekaula!

  15. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 12:36 am

Mr. Kekaula knows football, and does a good job painting that picture on the radio.

Cheers to the next level of broadcasting play by play.

Sure gonna miss pops at the helm. Won’t feel the same to me for some time with the adjustment. But I do enjoy listening to Robert on the am dial when the boob tube wasn’t available.

  16. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 12:43 am

Didn’t know that Nasti does broadcasting?

So this trio venture will most likely have one guy on the field with two in the booth? Seems to be the following lately.

  17. slenzi July 19, 2011 12:47 am

Since we left Hawaii two years ago Bobby Curran and Robert Kekaula have kept us in the game … laughing and sometimes crying, but always enjoying Warrior Football. With the advent of ESPN3 it made it less difficult to keep up with away games, but I’m sure Robert will become a staple for our football season just like he has at KHNL. God Bless! Geevum!

  18. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:48 am

It will be Kekaula and Ilaoa in the booth. Hernandez roaming the sidelines.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:48 am

Supposed to be Jim Leahey doing women’s volleyball and baseball .

  20. SteveM July 19, 2011 12:49 am

    Congrats RK!

…it’s gonna be interesting! Looking forward to it!

  21. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 12:53 am

    Thanks.

Not a big fan of a third commentator roaming, but it is the craze. Not gonna argue with Erin Andrews doing that job for ESPN.

Interested in seeing how Nate progresses.

So, how will they train together? Will do a mock trial in cognito with the opener against CU?

  22. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 1:00 am

    CoolEthan:

    You are on it tonight.

    I hear that’s how they’ll do it.

  23. kendall July 19, 2011 1:19 am

How did Nate Ilaoa get this gig? Has he done any color before? I thought Shawn Ching would have been a nice choice with Russell Yamanoha roaming the sidelines.

  24. mctruck July 19, 2011 1:24 am

Congratulations, Mr. Kekaula, and Mr. Ilaoa and Mr. Hernandez…..actually, I love all of these sports commentators, past and present.

Good morning Tsaiko’s have a beautiful day and enjoy. laters, going make me a cup of coffee.

  25. mctruck July 19, 2011 1:28 am

As for Mr. Ilaoa….he should be playing in the nfl/cfl, and I just can’t get over he’s not being picked up by somebody!?

  26. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 1:40 am

It’s a paycheck. Good to see him back here, and will be intriquing listening to his insight

  27. mctruck July 19, 2011 1:43 am

  31. A-joe July 19, 2011 2:15 am

Come on, Al, nothing wrong with going through Ka’u to get to Waikoloa.

Gigi- tell hubby you wanna go south where you can:

-Go and see the only Volcano in world that you can walk up to, safely watch and not get covered by it.

-Work your way down to Pahala. Go up to the shopping center, take a picture next to the brand new Bank of Hawaii sign and tell everyone in town that you know their hometown A-joe that built that sign.

-Sneak over to Mizuno Superette and buy yourself some world renown Ka’u Coffee.

-Get back on the highway and head down to the only public accessed Black Sand Beach in the state; Punalu’u. Take some pics with turtles in the bay and ones basking in the sun.

-Drive on down further south and head onto the Southern most town in all of the United States: Na’alehu. Go to the ball park and grab yourself something to eat at Donna Hanoa’s place. Tell ‘um A-joe n BIK sent you both.

-before you exit Na’alehu head on over across the street to the Punalu’u Sweet Bread Bake shop. The manager there, Connie, is my classmate. Tell her A-joe and BIK sent you. Make sure you grab a variety of sweetbreads and cookies available. Even Malasadas!

-If hubby is looking to toss back a quick cold one, stop on by Shaka’s restaurant at the edge of Na’alehu. Go in and ask for the owner, Rory. Tell ‘um A-joe and BIK sent you.

-As you’re heading out of Na’alehu you’ll enter into Mark Twain’s favorite hideaway: Waiohinu. If you need supplies like cold drinks and snacks for the long journey to Waikoloa stop on by Wong Yuen Store. Go in and ask for Jack, the owner. Tell him A-joe and BIK sent you.

-A few miles down from Waiohinu is the southern most tip in the united states: South Point. It’s long narrow two lane road down from the highway. The scenery is beautiful. Open and vast. If you and hubby feel up to it, take a chance and jump off the cliffs and into the Pacific. Hahahahahahahahaha!!

Drive back up and head towards Kona. You’ll pass the newest and southern most national park in the united states: Volcano National Park- Kahuku. Just beyond Kahuku NP is a huge lava field which holds the world’s largest subdivision: Ocean View Estates.

-Several miles up from Ocean View you’ll pass the last Hawaiian fishing village in the islands: Miloli’i. Take a spin if you like and see some good old fashion island living.

-Up aways from Miloli’i is a must stop: The City of Refuge. At Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park you’ll get a true sense of what living was like back in the ancient Hawaiian days.

-Up from the City of Refuge is another must stop: Kealakekua Bay. Just a beautiful an pristine place. You may still get to see the the house that got washed into the bay by the tidal wave earlier this year. If not, take a look at the monument in memory of Captain James Cook.

-As you’re driving up towards Kailua Kona you’ll pass allot of Kona coffee farms. Stop by any one of ‘um along the way.

-Just pass Teshima restaurant is the intersection to go to Keahou shopping center. Take that road, head down pass the shopping center and turn right onto Ali’i drive. Take this route into Kailua Kona.

-From Kailua you can make stops at any number of stores to pick up supplies. KTA, Safeway, Costco, WalMart, Target… or, just mosy on out to Waikoloa.

-On your way out cruise on into the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort. Beautiful property. Park your car and walk through the grounds. They’ve got a Hawaiian museum there. Ask for Cynthia. Tell her A-joe sent you. =)

When you get to Waikoloa pull up front and ask for Haddon. He’s the bell captain. Tell him A-joe sent you. He going take care! =)

Now, if you were to go Kona through the north of the island as Al suggested, all you’ll get is a bag of Malasadas and a nice view pastures and cows.

Take the road less traveled. Head south into God’s country. There’s just sooo much more to see and explore. =)

  32. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 2:24 am

    Talk about painting the pic.

A-joe giving it up for the best’est road less traveled in the entire, magnificient Hawaiian island chain.

If you pass up on these recommondations, you looze.

    The real Pacific Hwy.

Whoah, Kekaula and Ilaoa. Two BIG personalities. I think we going be laughing a lot dis year.

  35. Pride. July 19, 2011 2:47 am

Darren Hernandez is a very intelligent and witty guy. One color guy from the Tomey/Wags era and one color guy from the Jones era. A play by play guy who grew up on Hawaii football, and knows the history. Awesome.

  36. al July 19, 2011 2:56 am

ajoe…i was worried that they would get lost and the dolphins would miss them.

but, i checked later with the son in law and he said the same thing that you did. maybe i’ll do that run some day myself.

maybe they should have stayed at manago hotel. i could have gotten them an upgrade with two windows. we are related to the manager you see.

  37. al July 19, 2011 2:59 am

when the announcement first came out that oc16 got the contract i happened to mention to the big guy that he should go seek that job out.

his reply was atypical of robert, he said although he would love to have that job. he would not apply for it because his friends are the current announcers. however, if oc16 came calling he would listen.

    and the rest is history.

  38. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 3:05 am

I stayed at the Manago long, long, long ago for several nights.

Needing a place to sleep unanounced, I stubled in and was welcomed.

    $15 night back then.

    A gem.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Congratulations to Robert Kekaula!!

If I remember correctly, Colorado and BYU are going to be on ESPN. Fresno St is going to be on WSN. There might be only 4 home games and 1 road game that are televised by Oceanic.

I think Oceanic should have a pregame show….

  42. Annoddah Dave July 19, 2011 5:12 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

RK is a good pick! I did not like him when he first started out on KITV as he tried to get his own handle with some “hip” or “cool” slang dialogue. He has matured and call stuff straight on which l think is very good. Same with BC, when he started out…the maturity thing makes for better broadcasters. It seemed like the legacy of Al Michaels, Ken Wilson, Ken Proctor, the late Harry Kalas, Al Greenburg, Gene Good, et al had that maturity and called it straight like Vince Scully. I do not include Les Keiter in this group because he tried to be too cute and over dramatized stuff…he, I believe, was from the same school as Howard Cosell.

  48. LizKauai -iPad July 19, 2011 6:44 am

Thanks for the article on the FB Heisman promo, ST. Smart of UH to utilize social media, save $ at the start and get the word out.

Congrats to The Princess too… And Papa… Now if I could just see them all on Dish!

  49. Bulla July 19, 2011 6:56 am

    Pomai,

no need bigger booth, in this economy, we’ll go with a smaller camera, or alternate furloughs for the announcers….just a thought 🙂

  50. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 6:56 am

    Liz:

At first, I thought FB would be a passive idea. But Derek’s theory makes sense. After signing up, the notices come to you. And he has some pretty good video ideas coming up.

  51. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 6:59 am

Unlike with KFVE, there won’t be one primary voice.

There will be different announcers for different sports.

As Margo always says: There’s enough success for everyone.

  52. LizKauai -iPad July 19, 2011 7:08 am

ST- as was demonstrated in Egypt- there is nothing passive about facebook when ypu have an idea whose time has come.

Also- Those who know the powers that be at Oceanic- please suggest to them to Create an APP that provides access to the UH Games or stream from the web if they don’t want to share with competitors. Hoarding the UH broadcasts will not build good will and ultimately be detrimental.

    Hi ho!

enjoy your evening and late news casts

i think you folks are making big improvements

i watch you folks more than anyone else

especially for the first twenty minutes

when RK comes on i turn the station

RK’s puffer fish, ghetto, less dignified, less refined, less articulate than other sportscasters in town

the manner in which coach mack speaks dwarfs RK given the choices

i have hunch you folks at kitv know this

  54. haka July 19, 2011 7:14 am

It’s time to move on to the next broadcast chapter of UH football!

Congrats to the “Veterans” for the continued comfort of longstanding tradition!

Congrats to “Pops” who will always be “The Voice” of the Home Team!

  56. Derek July 19, 2011 7:22 am

My vote for UH men’s basketball play by play on OC16 is Kanoa Leahey. I was sold when he did the UH-Florida State game at the Diamond Head Classic with Doug Gottlieb. So far, I think OC16 has done a good job of selecting the announcers so far. Jim Leahey and Pal Eldrege is a slam dunk for baseball.

Congrats to Robert for being named play-by-play for UH Football…

But I hope Robert will not be overly critical of the team’s performance when thing are not going well. Part of the job as the play-by-play guy is to also promote the team so that people will want to come to the games or watch on TV. Being a UH Football fan for over 45 years, I hope the more fans will come to the games like in the ’70s and ’80s when the games average around the 40-45K level.

But I know Robert will do well… Congrats again!!!

Congratz to Robert Kekaula. I still remember him a sophmore at Kamehameha calling the intramural games like a pro. He took TV production many times and was a star even back then. Its inspiring to see him ascend to this job. Kekaula and crew should do a great job, Excited to see what Ilaoa does.

I’m glad that Pops will still be around. Pops and Pal calling UH baseball on a warm afternoon is quintissential sunday-spring for us.

  76. Garret July 19, 2011 7:55 am

Colt might not get a chance to play in the UFL…it looks like the UFL may be going out of business. Their hope was for the NFL lockout to bring them players and fans…now they are “delaying” their season and have no TV deal.

The UFL, made up mostly of players who had played, were hoping to play or had given up plans of playing in the NFL, released an aggressive 2011 schedule earlier this year that included games that would fill the void left by its Goliath competitor had the lockout pushed into the season.

But with the NFL lockout all but set to be resolved sometime in the next week, and with financial and other challenges mounting, the UFL backtracked. Among the major hurdles was the lack of a TV contract, partly due to the fact that Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and co-founder of HDNet, had withdrawn the services of his cable network and also sued the UFL for $5 million. Versus had also been airing UFL games but that contract expired.

Reports showed that the UFL lost between $40-$52 million last season.

  77. Garret July 19, 2011 7:56 am

Congratulations to Robert Kekaula and the rest of the announcer selections…especially the Princess! It is too bad that as a Dish customer I’m sure that I won’t be able to get the channel.

  81. Garret July 19, 2011 8:01 am

So, the UFL lost about $50 mil last season when they had 2 TV contracts. Now they have no TV contracts and are facing a $5 mil lawsuit.

If the UFL goes down, that would be really sad for Colt, RGM, Patek, and hundreds of other players.

  82. Pomai July 19, 2011 8:03 am

kudos to media relations director Derek Inouchi, who created the Facebook page to promote hawaii’s heisman candidate bryant moniz. these are austere times at manoa and inouchi’s use of the social network was smart and cost saving. no need to reinvent the wheel in this instance and facebook has become a ubiquitous global purveyor for news accounts in third world countries where media coverage is heavily regulated if not suppressed–as witnessed recently by the arab spring demonstrations in the middle-east.

and while we are speaking of bryant moniz, his maturity on and off the field has been worthy of distinction. moniz makes it clear that the heisman is for him a collective team effort that involves both sides of the ball and each and every unit on the warrior team.

this is the QB that leads his team on the field as flag-bearer and speaks proudly of his heritage and representing the entire citizenry of his great state. kudos to moniz for his growth and inspiring leadership and to mac–congradulations for being a successful mentor.

The money is there. I like that inquiry Pomai. Especially for certain states that don’t have that luxury of hosting an NFL team.

Going off on a tangent, Sacramento and L.A. could sure use one.

  87. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:09 am

Indeed, Moniz is literally the flag bearer.

  88. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 8:10 am

Haka gets the credit for that catch phrase.

    I just seconded the notion.

  89. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 8:12 am

Put a UFL team in Hawai’i fopr that matter… no wait, then we’d have to pay all the mainland teams’ travel to and from the state.

  90. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:14 am

    CoolEthan:

    It’s all about marketing.

  91. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:15 am

    DPK:

Quite witty this early in the morn.

  92. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 8:15 am

Moniz’s video promo reel is pretty cool. I would have hyped the UH QB DNA a little bit more. Show Moniz as the current great in a long line of greats here.

  93. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 8:15 am

Nice pic of the Water Buffalo member.

If I lived on the mainland, I would want to join the Elks club.

Then come over and visit, just to hang at the Elks and surf.

The one and only in the good ‘ole U.S.A.

  94. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:17 am

    NBA released the 2011-12 schedule.

Now all it needs is a settlement.

  95. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 8:18 am

Who? Me? That must have accidentally slipped out.

Gigi makes me wish I was on the Big Island, doin’ the A-joe tour with Sweety.

  96. warriorsun July 19, 2011 8:19 am

no pun intended but “okole in the seats” is too anal….and while we are discussing promotions,

a natural for our inaugural mwc season (iff all comes true) —

“Hawaii to unleash its AIR-Forc(ier) in ’12”.

  97. dihudfan July 19, 2011 8:22 am

FINALLY… someone who will be calling the game like how it’s being played… tired of hearing the color man making corrections all the time… congrats Robert!!!

  98. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 8:25 am

Speaking of wanting to eat buffalo –

North shore Kauai had a herd on a private ranch. Still exist?

  99. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 8:25 am

And it needs to be said: We are lucky to have Moniz back at QB this season. He’s worked hard and grown as player and a person. He verifies that the best QBs in the country year in year out, can be found at UH. I pray the press is watching him as the season begins.

  100. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:27 am

I thought those shots of Mighty Mo on the Mighty Mo were quite impressive.

  101. huh? July 19, 2011 8:30 am

    to kanoa,

    hang in there

you are the antithesis of RK

refined, charasmatic, fun to listen to

looking forward to tuning into O16 and watching your broadcasting of O16 high school games.

  102. Innocent Observer July 19, 2011 8:31 am

Not very happy about RK and football broadcast announcer; in the past, he has made uncalled for and denigrating remarks about the other team, and officating. Further, he does not have the charm, wit and gregariousness like Jim L. True Jim is getting up there but believe he is still much better than RK overall. Need a broadcaster that can not only call the action but respect the opposition, engage the viewers, and Jim has this innate ability to do so and does it effortlessly. Will turn down the audio on the telecast and listen to BC on the radio, at least he is fair and respects the other teams. Maybe next year, oceanic will consider bringing back Jim.

  103. bigislandkurt July 19, 2011 8:33 am

Nasti up in the booth? Even better. I love it when young talented folks get their chance. Nate is a very talented brother — both on and off the field. He is Samoan, from military family, lived in different places, speaks well and has a fairly wide frame of reference. Oh, and just so happen, he is one of Hawaii’s greatest players to ever wear the jersey. I am really stoked for him and this wonderful opportunity in front of him. C’mon Nate! I’m pull’n for you bro! Please don’t lay a big egg. haaaaaaaa. From now to till the start of the season, I’m sure he we will be in front of game videos all day long practicing.

    BIK

  104. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 8:34 am

back to yesterdays post about HF coming up with ” Were all in it together”

Was that money man, or drinking buddy that coined that phrase for him to use.

I believe we used that same phrase moments before a food fight in the cafeteria at middle school.

  105. CoolEthan July 19, 2011 8:35 am

    Kurt

    me2.

excited for Nate to get this opportunity.

  106. warriorsun July 19, 2011 8:35 am

    @97.

how quickly some forget the family that brought us play-by-play from isenberg to halawa kai. through termite palace to rust-bucket. from radio air waves to satellite transmission. from freebees to pay-4-view. rain, storm, wind and sunshine. dirt to mud to grass to articficial turf….. at the forefront of robert’s mahalo was a special tribute to uncle jim–for mentoring him. nice touch and a wonderful-culture that expresses aloha in hawaii so graciously.

  107. bigislandkurt July 19, 2011 8:36 am

AJoe — When the nation of Ka’u is finally re-formed, you will need to be appointed “minister of commerce, information, and good will.”

Your Ka’u sunshine is warm as ever brother.

Gigi, don’t be surprised if these business look at you funny and ask you “who da hell is Ajoe and BIK???” But then again, you just never know who reads the blog.

    BIK

  108. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:40 am

Leahey wanted to step down from football. He still will be involved throughout the school year by handling up to three sports.

Shawn Ching is a busy guy, both anchoring and still doing work for a legal firm. And, of course, he got married last year.

Kanoa Leahey will be getting UH work, too. And he still does the high school sports, in addition to his full-time job at KHON.

    There’s enough success for everybody.

  109. warriorsun July 19, 2011 8:45 am

    stephen,

im not speaking to success–that comes with water-levels.

unappreciative and respect would be more accurate.

  110. Slugger July 19, 2011 8:48 am

    gigi,

If you get to Keahou & you’re hungry for pizza, stop at Bianelli’s and tell them I sent you. 🙂

  111. Slugger July 19, 2011 8:50 am

A-Joe, mayor of Ka’u! That was a great road trip itinerary. Gonna save it for my next trip to the B.I.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  112. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:51 am

    warriorsun:

I wasn’t speaking to you directly, but I do appreciate your comment.

  113. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 8:55 am

Anyone else sad about Borders closing its stores?

  114. Slugger July 19, 2011 8:59 am

Congrats to the Princess & Nate! It’ll be nice to see more UH sports on TV. Who’s doing softball? (I haven’t caught up on reading the blog yet…)

  115. Robert (not K) July 19, 2011 8:59 am

Hoooooooo…. daz was one guuud descrition by A-joe. I stay like go awready. I stay going go pack the filum and go take da pixtures from the volocano firser. Den I stay goin go on the car cruz. Sum guud.

    Good morning everyone.

Check this out, NFL games about to get longer.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/NFL-games-are-about-to-get-longer-and-more-repla?urn=nfl-wp3507

  117. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 9:08 am

Thank you for the back story in #108 at 8:40 am Mr. Tsai. It puts things into a more comfortable perspective.

  118. madeinhawaii July 19, 2011 9:16 am

    Hiflyer,

Probably just another excuse to play more commercials while the refs sip the gatorade.

  119. huh? July 19, 2011 9:17 am

    108-okay stephie

  120. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 9:21 am

Hernandez on the sidelines would be good. Can’t wait to see and here Nate in the booth.

  121. James July 19, 2011 9:21 am

Jim Leahey will stand out as the second best sportscaster to grace Hawaii sports.

Who is numero ono? Without question, …. Al Michaels!

That says a lot because Hawaii sport fans have been exposed to great sportscasters like Frank Valenti, Carlos Rivas, Chuck Leahey, Harry Caray, Joe Moore, Larry Beil, etc..

Hope he continues to broadcast UH baseball games with Pat Edredge. They do a fantastic job! And mens’ and womens’ volleyball games.

It is not going to be the same without Jim Leahey calling the games.

  122. BigWave96744 July 19, 2011 9:27 am

Stephen, is Hernandez giving up being the HC at Kapolei HS?

If so, I wonder if Michael Carter (current OC) will run the show.

Too bad for the other former Warrior who could have moved up if a coaching change occurs at Kapolei

  123. warriorsun July 19, 2011 9:29 am

oceanic has updated equipment and technology. that goes to quality production.

from a management point-of-view they tend to mtvize their delivery rather than producing professional product. im guessing they are targeting a certain viewership.

this is robert’s opportunity to step-up and deliver quality and make his name synonymous with warrior football as papa leahey has done for a career spanning 3 decades. it won t be easy to replace the grand raconteur and voracious reader of fact and lore, but for kekaula, his local persona gives him a leg-up to put together a great package. we shall see….best wishes to robert and nate.

  124. BigWave96744 July 19, 2011 9:29 am

Also if word on the homestead is correct, I hope the former Warrior is cleared.. he’s a great guy

  125. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 9:36 am

I would like to see OC16 do some archive show with Jim Leahey hosting. They could have guests from that particular game. Imagine guys like Gary Allen, Timmy Chang, RainbowCliff, Clarence Dickerson, Levi Stanley, Jeris White, Mento, sitting next to JL talking about the game situations and feelings up to and during during the game. It doesn’t have to be just about football or basketball. Imagine Derek Tatsuno, or Kelsey Isa, Chuck Crim, or the guy (I forget his name) that would trot around the bases with his left arm almost straight down after hitting a home run or players from both the wahine (Collins) and men’s volleyball teams. I’m sure a lot of us old timers would watch it as well as some younger people to gain knowledge, history and tradition of UH sports. 1/2 hour would be too short, but maybe an hour show.

  126. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 9:37 am

    #120 ooops, here=hear.

  127. Turfwar July 19, 2011 9:37 am

Congrats to Robert, Nate and Coach Hernandez. That team will do a great job. And a big thanks to A-joe, I’m also going to keep that Big Island travel itinerary and make that trip someday. Just took my family on a similar trip around Maui including the Hana run. The road around Kaupo is improved but I won’t be doing that anytime soon again. Why is it that the locals who do that drive the most have the biggest trucks? I’m still a bit traumatized. But the views are simply amazing.

  128. d1shima (Aria'd) July 19, 2011 9:37 am

Not sure a farm system would be viable for football with the limited careers that some positions have. RB’s are typically considered on the downside after 5 seasons. Spend 2 years in “AAA” and there wouldn’t be much left…brutal, yes but that’s the business.

  129. ballpicker July 19, 2011 9:40 am

    Thanks for the pics Gigi-Hawaii.

  130. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 9:40 am

On my #125, they could also use former announcers/broadcasters/commentators to sit with JL.

  131. krazy kanakz July 19, 2011 9:45 am

They chose Robert Kekaula? I would rather have Shawn Ching or Kanoa Leahy. RK’s voice is too deep of a monotone. Never really cared for ’em.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid July 19, 2011 9:47 am

    hey bp! Howzit going?

Looks like we gotta do that A-joe tour someday, huh? And remember, telll ’em A-Joe and BIK sent you!

  133. Couch potato July 19, 2011 9:59 am

    bud light, miller lite

    pepsi, coke

    mac, pc

    different strokes for different folks.

it is what it is, and RK it is. done, pau, get over it.

  134. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 9:59 am

Wow. I looked at gigi’s pictures of her Big Island vacation and A-Joe’s “tour” of going from Hilo to Waikoloa, via the south side. I’m going to Maui this weekend for our 33rd anniversary and staying at the Royal Kahana. We’re going to Ulalena dinner show on Friday night. I’ve been to Maui several times but feel like I’m missing something. Been to Hana, around Haleakala, saw the sunrise there too, along with Tadeshi’s winery. Went around from Kapalua through Kahakuloa to Waiehu and Kahalui and back. Saw La Paroise (sp) Bay. Ate at Tastey Crust (mmm.. hotcakes). Some thing is missing. Can anybody help us out?

  135. Couch potato July 19, 2011 10:01 am

A-joe, thanks for the tour info. i’m going to cut and paste your post and save it for reference!

  136. Stretch July 19, 2011 10:02 am

papajoe – Meet Whitey, Duffer and the Kid at Tiffany’s for dinner then take the “tour” with Whitey.

Seems like Borders created their own demise.

Let all the customers do the touchy – feely thing with the product, read all they want, then put it back on the shelf.

Too many peeps hanging out, using – using – and using, but nobody purchasing those Red Flag George Catanza books.

  138. A-House July 19, 2011 10:04 am

    papajoe:

did you leave out Iao Valley/Needle purposefully? have you seen the Jack Kenedy lava image (in black)?

how about Shishido Bakery in Happy Valley? Guri Guri in Kahului S/C?

  139. A-House July 19, 2011 10:05 am

    A-joe:

your travel log – how many hours for the tour to Waikaloa? Alii Drive is beautiful.

  140. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 10:12 am

Thanks A-House. Yup, I did the Iao Needle several times. Laid down in the cold water and got a neck massage from the rushing water.

Stretch, no can take the “tour”. I don’t drink anymore bwahahaha.

Was supposed to meet Duffer at the golf course yesterday, but I didn’t get the message until I got home. Too late. He may still be here.

  141. papajoe2 July 19, 2011 10:14 am

Wife wants to just relax at the pool or a nearby beach with her wine. I want to do something besides having a nice dinner.

  142. al July 19, 2011 10:20 am

stretch…the whitey tour is not recommended for couples.

  143. Stretch July 19, 2011 10:21 am

papajoe – sorry about that, forgot it was an anniversary weekend. Duffer should be at the course until about lunch time. The Kid started at 730.

  145. huh? July 19, 2011 11:18 am

    kanoa,

    i got to thinking

one thing i like about you and your dad is that both of you are not one trick ponies

you are both versital, flexible in your broadcasting, well versed

you would be the type of chefs that wouldn’t have one specialy, you would have many

thats what i like about you folks, no one trick pony in your blood, no dog and pony show in your alls blood

someone writes, for example, “there’s enough success for everybody”. , i hope you not agreeing with this statement because i think you are deserving of the top success, the top spotlight and stage, top billing. gl.

  146. Old School Dave July 19, 2011 11:20 am

With the upcoming UH game with UW at Husky Stadium, I hope the Star Advertiser sports people will track down and interview some of the former UH players and coaches from the 73 team that upset UW at Husky Stadium, 10-7. Larry Price, Rick Blangiardi, Jeris White, Hal Stringert, Levi Stanley, among many others.

  147. chawan_cut July 19, 2011 11:23 am

#146 OSD, see my #125. Wouldn’t it be nice to see those guys sit down and talk about the game while watching the footage on OC16 a day or 2 before the present game. Even right before the game would be good. I think Papa Leahey would be a good host too.

Wow- the A-Joe tour of the Big Island is a classic. Gotta try to make it before everything changes in these days of change!

Good luck to all the sportscasters – remember to love it, enjoy it and share it.

    HiHo!

  160. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 12:16 pm

Now you have to detail the Kauai tour.

Congrats to RK, Nasti, and the Princess.

    The band gets back together…

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20110719_hawaii_pitchers_compete_in_canada.html

When Kaia Parnaby spotted Jenna Rodriguez on the field last week, it took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the image.

“It’s kind of weird seeing her in red and black as opposed to green and black,” Parnaby said. “It’s kind of a shock.”… Parnaby will accompany Australia to the World Cup of Softball this week in Oklahoma City and said the summer experience carries over into the college season “considering international competition is totally different and not just one step above college experience, it’s like two or three.”

“It’s a lot quicker, they’re a lot more powerful, they know the game that much better,” she said.

Parnaby went 1-3 with a 2.29 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 181⁄3 innings in Canada. Former Rainbow Wahine Stacey Porter finished third in the tournament in hitting at .484 with 10 RBIs and two home runs as Australia finished third in the tournament.

Rodriguez was raised in California, but is eligible to play for Canada because her mother was born in Edmonton and is a Canadian citizen.

She applied for dual citizenship last summer and made the national team’s tournament roster as an outfielder/designated hitter after completing her two-year UH career. Her highlight of the week was a grand slam in Canada’s 8-5 loss to Venezuela last Friday.

“It’s definitely a whole new ballgame at this level,” Rodriguez said. “And it’s great how you have a lot of Rainbow Wahine softball players representing different countries.”

“I like playing in this tournament because even though it’s the offseason and I am working on new pitches and mechanics, I still have to pitch against great competition,” said Ricketts, the two-time reigning Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the year.

***Per Jason Kaneshiro, the World Cup of Softball opens this Thursday and the US vs Australia game on FRIDAY will be on ESPN at 2pm HST.

eh gnalo…last week i was in chinatown. one of the vendors was selling 3 inch papio.

playing dumb i asked her, “eh what kind fish is this?”

the asian lady replied, “oh, dat one is papio.”

me, “baby papio? must be good ah?”

her, “oh yah, cook em crispy.”

me, “ummm, aren’t these illegal size papio?”

asian lady, “oh no. this is from the philipines. not local.”

    yah right.

Congrats to Robert Kekaula. I will miss him with Bobby Curran. They had great chemistry like Al Michaels and John Madden. I got a feeling Tate Porcier won’t choose Hawaii. Colt came because no one else wanted him. But Tate has choices. When it comes right down to it, he’ll choose closer to home. He mentioned that’s what he wanted.

  218. Kevin July 19, 2011 2:27 pm

    Observer,

    Not that complicated.

As I’ve been SCREAMING for WEEKS…. This is what happens when you attempt to confuse, obfuscate, and deceive.

More useful to the troller during a sports season to masquerade as many to distort the fact that only one person has the obscene view of a student-athlete or coach. To get one’s point across in the internet world and realm, it’s the simple trickery of using multiple names to make it seem like one’s alienated view of something is more popular than it is.

Some do it well, some simply cannot.

For me, I don’t need to have the access of IP addresses to smell bulls*** a mile away.

From the persistent matter in which queries are proposed to the stumbling hints in an attempt to fish certain people out into a response during the 2011 WCWS its only obvious and they think no one is paying attention.

Since the end of the spring UH season the not-so sutble transformation from a “MysteryPerson” to this non-sense now… I advise that all those engaged in detailed conversation with said faux blogger should be weary about what they disclose because this is no longer funny.

    It’s just sad.

  219. Laura July 19, 2011 2:27 pm

al, #213, who does not know about uhfan808, she is a legend, when it comes to being a Warrior fan.

    Good afternoon everyone!

I’m a little late after Rasu Begasu’s announcement/comment (Tsai-ko tailgate buffet on SEP 17) sent me doing many updates.

Where/what the heck is Fiesta Henderson Casino… and buffet lunch for $7?

Found it–almost directly south of Sam Boyd stadium, and updated my Vegas map. Learned Fiesta Henderson is part of the Station Casino chain– Palace Station, Boulder Station, etc. Web site shows $4.99 with their casino card but maybe no one would believe that from Rasu. Updated info at:

Yeah I know ST told me to cool it, but the difference between you and I is I acknowledge when I’ve been bad or out of place, for you nothing you do in your own little world is wrong.

You seemed like a sensible blogger until the day you felt threatened when you suggested that Manti Te’o would be a guest and the majority of others suggested that they’d rather hear from a UH student-athlete and for this you played the part of martyr.

Go back to your stupid little Kalihi korean drinkie drinkie bar and your kanaks laughing at Coach mack’s words.

This is the last time acknowledge your words.

    While i’ve enjoyed BORDERS over the years — in the past couple of years as they got into financial difficulty, (i think) they lost their customer focus; they would advertise, even send coupons, then make it hard to find and use them rather than when they used to have them ready at the registers (for example);

While i think it’s better to have both major companies, for competition and better spacing and coverage …

i Like Barnes and Noble A LOT More — larger (40% versus 30%) Best Seller discounts, all-the-time member discounts (10% off of everything, not just books) AND better service and selection in bringing in and finding books, periodicals and DVDs …

To Their Credit — i think it was Borders that first brought in Starbucks (but they later switched to discounted / downgraded Seattle’s Best — which formerly was the better Brand & Quality)

HEY !For us UHFB Fans, I’m just glad we have Fort Street’s “KING FORT MAGAZINE” (538-0266 – i’m NOT associated, just an appreciative customer) to bring in “Phil Steele’s College Football Guide” WEEKS Before the Big Box Boys …

Phil Steele was THE ONLY National Rag smart enough to FORESEE Hawai’i’s Ascension up the NCAA Football Ladder …

    RE: #234

Just got home…but to be a stickler on details…

“Laura” appeared on or around the Fourth of July weekend this month.

There is no other blog name “Laura” or similar variation in the local blog records.

UHfan808 has been mostly MIA from the blog since December 2010 = 8 months.

Hence Laura has been around or lurking for at least 8+ months.

BTW, there are 97 known Tsaikettes.

Laura is not counted since we have not met her in person yet. 😐

  245. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 5:54 pm

Laura is always pleasant on this blog.

That means a lot to me.

Whether or not she is somebody else means nothing to me.

  246. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 5:55 pm

BTW, it took me 5-1/2 hrs to reach Waikoloa today.

Made 3 stops along the way.

We went thru Kau and along the western coast.

  247. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 5:57 pm

While I appreciate the comments, it’s summertime. Go outside. Spend time with loved ones. We’ll still be here when you come back.

  248. Derek July 19, 2011 6:02 pm

It’s pretty said that Honolulu doesn’t have Triple A baseball. Yes, we had winter league, but it wasn’t the same. I had the good fortune of meeting with Jack Quinn the General Manager of the Islanders. Nice man. Also, got to meet Dick Phillips. There were a lot of characters in those days, but for some reason my favorite was John Werhas, the third baseman. For the opponents, lots of future major leaguers and a few Hall of Famers. Bobby Valentine was a young bonus baby in those days. Mike Schmidt was playing for the Eugene Emeralds and he was at 2B, because the third baseman was John Vukovich. The Emeralds also had Larry Bowa and Greg “the Bull” Luzinski. Those were the days.

  249. Laura July 19, 2011 6:11 pm

Gigi, thank you for those wonderful pics. Your pics always brighten up my day. Btw, you should buy that dolphin for your granddaughter, if it is not to expensive.

  250. kawika49 July 19, 2011 6:14 pm

My Dad, used to take care of the transportation for the HI Islanders back in the early 60’s. Met many of them before they went on to the majors. Always had tickets from them, over their dugout.

Pretty interesting conversation going on the blog today.

Anyway, football yet? No? Okay, I’ll be back in time for training camp updates. And, of course, any Forcier updates.

If somebody doesn’t like the people here and finds it so unpleasant, he need not be here.

I don’t recall there being any invitations.

If somebody is here only because somebody doesn’t have any friends, loved ones or anything else to do, then I suppose he can stay.

  270. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2011 7:52 pm

  279. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 8:24 pm

Well, I did leave the blog for extended periods twice, the last time being for almost 2 years.

I returned after the Advertiser merged with the SB and became the SA.

I was just curious to see if the WB had changed. I found a lot of new names on the blog which made it interesting.

Then, there are the same old ones who make it unpleasant.

I just separate the chaff from the wheat.

  280. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 8:26 pm

Without the WB, how would I have met Kawika 49, who gave me a gift in Hilo, or D1shima, who recommended Cafe Pesto in Hilo?

  281. Laura July 19, 2011 8:27 pm

Gigi, how was your dinner and did you ride that small boat to the restuarant?

  282. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 8:31 pm

Also, I did invite some Tsaikos to my home–

    LizK

Kekoa — he gave me a set of golf clubs for free

    Garret

    Ajoe and Asports

    Jojo and family

The food was so-so. We ate at an open air restaurant on the lagoon.

we walked – took 3 min to get there.

    was too windy though.

hope it is not windy when we swim with the dolphins tomorrow morning.

  284. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 8:47 pm

    Ajoe,

Thanks for telling me about Black Sand Beach in Punaluu.

Because of you, we were on the lookout for the sign directing us to the place.

Also, because of you, we recognized the Hawaiian name for the City of Refuge. Would have gone right past the sign on the road if you hadn’t told us.

We go to most of the home bowsball games – have had season tickets for 94 billion years – and listen to 1420 unless we’re someplace where it would be rude to be listening to the radio. It never occurs to me to dvd the games because I just don’t like the sound of Leahy’s voice plus he really doesn’t understand baseball like Don does.

We also listen to the football radio broadcasts while we’re there in the Stadium because it’s impossible to really see the details of the plays from the stands – maybe next time I should have zoom lenses implanted in my eyeballs.

    @@@@@@

Re the Facebook thing, is there some way to go to it without signing in or joining up? What other ways are there to support Bryant Moniz’s Heisman campaign

Only thru the WB could we have met.

  293. Laura July 19, 2011 9:15 pm

Gigi, you must be having to much fun, forgot another one, Mr. and Mrs. Chopsueyboy.

  294. Laura July 19, 2011 9:18 pm

Gigi, could that tram be what the rail cars might look like?

  295. bigislandkurt July 19, 2011 9:36 pm

    BIK

  296. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2011 9:39 pm

Laura, yes, I met chopsuey boy. Not his wife, tho.

as for the tram, no it does not resemble the rail.

    the tram has smaller cars.

Sounds like you and hubby are having a great time. Should be fun to swim with the dolphins. I’ve never done that.

  301. Curt July 19, 2011 10:09 pm

Do the dolpins congregate in the Waikoloa area beaches?

  302. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 19, 2011 10:10 pm

    #302,

They pay to play with the captive ones in the lagoon thing. They have it at the Kahala Hotel if you want to try it.

  303. Curt July 19, 2011 10:29 pm

    iwwthm

Ah so. Captive dolphins. All this time, I thought this was about dolphins out in the wild. I think our gigi might be more wild than the dolphins.

  304. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 19, 2011 10:29 pm

I know I asked something like this before but has UH ever considered paying for a recruiting service on the mainland before?

With the high cost of travel to the mainland, would it be more economical to pay someone to scout talent on the west coast for us all while being stationed on the west coast?

I thought UH under JJ had some kind of arrangement before.

  305. Slugger July 19, 2011 11:22 pm

  306. Al July 19, 2011 11:40 pm

Somebody upset the host. That’s rare.

  307. Al July 19, 2011 11:42 pm

305…no, we don’t use a scouting service. Just the coconut wireless.

  308. Al July 19, 2011 11:43 pm

Jj wanted a hire a recruit coach who would camp out on the mainland

  309. LizKauai -iPad July 19, 2011 11:47 pm

Hope you had an enjoyable lunch, Slugger! You would like this fish soup (see fb).

    Love you guys… Nitey nite!

  310. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 19, 2011 11:56 pm

    #308,

Seems like a ton of schools are using recruiting services. Although they aren’t necessarily in the spotlight for good things…But I digress.

There must be some kind of advantage to using these services right?

Weight is a critical variable in air travel, and at one time all passengers were weighed during the boarding process in order to get an accurate weight for take-off. Today, the FAA uses an “average” weight to roughly calculate aircraft weight that may or may not be accurate, depending on the passenger mix.. . A person who weighs twice the average weight costs twice as much to transport, so charging for air travel by weight would be very fair, but probably not politically correct.

Great. Start learning how to speak Chinese ladies and gentlemen. When they realize we can’t repay our national debt, they being the largest holder of our debt, will want land as collateral. Maybe a few states. This would lead to massive civil unrest, rioting, looting, etc. I for one dare any looter to come to my place, or my neighborhood. I know a lot of the families for several blocks around have made some preparations.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

I just watched a video that showed how a hidden software literally FORCES people to put money in your bank, 100% legally. It’s almost like hypnosis because it’s so effective. I made $168 today so far with it, but don’t believe me – see it in action for yourself: http://sn.im/incomedominationengine
