Just win, baby

Love him or hate him, there was no denying Al Davis’ passion for football and single-minded pursuit of winning.

There were thin threads between Davis’ Raiders and the Warriors, such as the black-themed uniform colors and the need for speed.

His greatest influence was inspiring others to think outside the proverbial box, that being different can sometimes be better. And his finger-to-the-establishment style was embraced, creating a fan base that became a Raider Nation.

In the 1970s, Davis was the Steve Jobs of football. Davis’ death is another loss for innovation.

* * * * *

Interesting that Henry Kapono will be singing the national anthem at next week’s SMU-Central Florida game. If the Mustangs win two more games, bet the house that they will be playing in this year’s Hawaii Bowl. (By the way, sorry if you’re  now living with your in-laws because I said to bet the house on the UNLV game.)

As a Jets fan, I thought Davis was a pain in the okole.

But I gotta respect a guy who helped force the merger of the AFL and NFL, and made football as popular as it is today.

Plus, what other team has so many non-corporate-looking people in the front rows.

Born on the 4th of July, Al Davis has no heir apparent:

“He has a wife named Carol. They have only one child together. He is their son who is called Mark Davis. He is very unlike his father. As he is not interested in football at all, neither does he want a share in the glory of his father.”

Don’t know if there’s a kicker controversy, but Kenton Chun took extensive kicks yesterday, and Mack said a decision on who will kick will be made next week.

Interesting to note that Mark Davis, son of Al, was seen

at ownership meetings as was Amy Trask.

At a Bill Walsh Press Conference, Al Davis said the team would be left to his wife and son. No mention of Amy Trask,

John Madden, Ron Wolf, Jim Otto, and others could be brought in to run the team, some think. Also the league could take over the

    franchise.

I think the Raiders should go public, and sell shares to Raider Nation, just like the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay Packer Shares were priced at $200 per. As of June 8, 2005, 112,015 people (representing 4,750,934 shares) can lay claim to a franchise ownership interest. Shares of stock include voting rights, but the redemption price is minimal, no dividends are ever paid, the stock cannot appreciate in value (though private sales often exceed the face value of the stock), and stock ownership brings no season ticket privileges. No shareholder may own over 200,000 shares, a safeguard to ensure that no individual can assume control of the club. To run the corporation, a board of directors is elected by the stockholders.

  38. Stephen Tsai October 8, 2011 8:46 am

I can understand the Big East’s interest in Air Force, but, sheesh, shouldn’t we all get a say in that situation? I mean, aren’t our tax dollars subsidizing the Air Force Academy? I mean, I don’t mind spending it on some stealth planes or, even, giving the pilots some iPads, but subsidizing the Academy’s travel to New Jersey for tennis matches? C’mon, now.

Anyone interested in being a BIGTIME TRUE WARRIOR FAN can look no further than at the sea of orange that remains between Texas and Oklahoma rivalry. Their butts are being handed to them but, the Texas faithful remain to take their full dose of WoopAss with pride.

This is what separates the BIG TIME from the wannabe’s.

We win together. We gotta lose together too.

  48. whitey October 8, 2011 8:52 am

Ipuman, those name you mentioned brings back memories when I took the kids to the bay area and the kids stayed with families in Pleasanton and one of them was Ron Wolf. the kids got the royal treatmet by going to the raiders game, going to the locker room after the game to get autographs, and dropping their jaws when they saw Otis Sistrunk.

  49. Stephen Tsai October 8, 2011 8:52 am

    Re: Loyd

They like Frank Loyd Jr., but he’s still only a freshman.

At the end of yesterday’s practice, Brett Leonard left to get “treatment.” Not sure what ails him. Result of cheap shot he took?

That’s an interesting situation to monitor. Maybe Matagisila Lefiti moves to left guard. Maybe Faaumu moves back there, opening the way for Lefotu.

Or maybe it’s nothing and Leonard will be back.

    Stay tuned.

This does NOT help increase their chances for consideration in the Big 12

    Yay.

  86. Not an Expert October 8, 2011 11:25 am

#37 A-joe: Based on the numbers, capital invested by the people of Green Bay is just under a BILLION Dollars. If 250,000 people each invested $4,000 that will be 1 BILLION Dollars. Would we be allowed to bring a NFL franchise to Hawaii. If the people of Hawaii can’t sell out the stadium, the tourist nationally and people from Asia will probably be able to make up the difference.

Okay let’s just say 125,000 people invest $4,000 to UH football foundation. $500,000,000 in the coffers. Have it invested in bonds at 3% to 5% dividends that could bring in $15 million to $25 million a year to help pay for the coaches, upgrade of facilities, etc. State of Hawaii should give us a tax credit not a tax deduction to make this happen.

Having this type of money be able to elevate UH into the top tier of college football? Just thinking BIG.

  87. Slugger October 8, 2011 11:34 am

Congrats to Saui Matagiese on receiving a scholarship!

  88. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 11:35 am

I think getting 125,000 people to donate $4 would be big. No joke.

  89. Derek October 8, 2011 11:38 am

From my observations, I thought Cameron Mercado, the former Kahuku kicker who came from Florida was pretty good and he had a very good leg and got the ball up high quickly. Don’t know if he got a look from Hawaii and I don’t know where he is right now. Don’t know if he was offered a scholarship or even a preferred walk-on. Maybe he went back to Florida and playing somewhere in the South. Just a thought for the future, maybe.

IMHO, some of the place kicks on extra points and field goals are pretty low, almost like a line drive. Don’t know if it’s the position of the ball on the hold or the kick itself. But, I do think that the team needs to address this area. We’ve had too many blocks this year already.

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 11:40 am

I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Boise v. Oklahoma in the Fiesta if the Sooners don’t make it to the title game.

My 50″ Sony TV is broken and tried to take it to Sony today to fix it only to find out they were closed…What a bummer…Their website indicated that they were open on Saturdays.

So, I have to be satisfied looking at the games on an old 27″ set which isn’t quite the same…

Isn’t Cameron Mercado playing for one of the Southern Schools? It’s too bad we can’t find another Jason Elam…

Mahalo for the birthday greetings yesterday. Since DrDoc’s bairthday is tomorrow, we generally do something on the day in- between – this year, we’re going to watch DaWahine do it again tonight. Hope to see some T-Regulars during the match.

Happy (belated) Birthday to Mrs. A-House.

On a sports-connected political note – the chaos happening on 5th Floor of the Capitol is going to have a MAJOR impact on UH in general and UH Athletics – in particular. football, all Wahine sports, and basketball. Whether the outcomes are positive or negative will be pretty much determined by the end of the month.

Will keep Stephen posted on what my sources are saying so that he/Ferd/Dave can follow up.

  105. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 1:25 pm

Which is to say that these contracts have now taken over a year of negotiations and processing… WTG UH!…Stick your head in the sand and burrow.. burrow.. borrow… borrow… broke.. broke…

Another reason why Jett Jasper is an asset to UH Athletics:

University of Hawai’i Athletics on fb:

UH Manoa students will receive a free hot dog with chili at the UH women’s volleyball match against San Jose State on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 6:00 p.m. until the end of halftime (or while supplies last). The match begins at 7:00 p.m. The Student Athletic Fee Committee has hot dogs for the first 200 students with a valid UH Manoa student ID. The hot dogs will be located by the statues behind the student section. So come to the volleyball match to dig into some free hot dog deliciousness.

    PACK THE STANLEY!

    GO WAHINE!

  107. wafan October 8, 2011 1:30 pm

    IW . . .

If they had completed the contract earlier would they have this problem?

  108. wafan October 8, 2011 1:33 pm

You would think as intelligent those folks claim to be they would have a template for contracts. One that would require plugging in numbers and a few specifics to personalize contracts.

That’s the kind of forward thinking we need! Creative avenues to generate residual income for the school. I like it!!

    66: Aaron-

One of the first lessons we all should learn in being fans is not to belittle other fan bases. Especially superior ones. It simply makes us look ignorant.

Aaron, you should try to go to Tuscaloosa or milk a cow. They’re both quite exhilarating. =)

60K at the UH/UW game. UW was not in session yet — about two weeks before classes began.

That is community and fan support.

There are other sport teams in the area — WWU, SU, Seahawks, M’s, high schools, . . .

Questions are how to rebuild the Warrior fan base with fans who actually show up; and, how to get fans in the sport venues win or lose similar to the local high schools.

Al Davis ruined the Raiders. He tried too hard for certain players who ended up being busts. Backed out on deals with players. Ran Marcus Allen out of town. Got lucky with Plunkett. Too much owner meddling. Head Coaches could never do what they wanted so he hired head coaches that would listen to him, hence, 20 years of mediocrity and doom.

Sorry to say. Things are looking up for the Raiders.

    He was entertaining though.

    Kickers:

Look at Ka’imi Fairbairn from Punahou. The kid is awesome!!

Kaiser kicker Jason K. kicked a 56 yarder last night. 56!

  115. al October 8, 2011 2:31 pm

    kaiser hs kickers are legendary.

in fact, if given the chance the best one may already be on the warrior roster.

all we are saying is give niiro a chance.

  116. ai-eee-soos October 8, 2011 2:31 pm

    dumb, but innocent, question –

are Hawaii high school placekickers allowed to use a kicking tee ?

  117. Ralph October 8, 2011 2:32 pm

thanks A Joe, Monday will be two weeks since we e mailed the AD for Diamond Head tickets.

  118. al October 8, 2011 2:37 pm

    aloha al davis.

one of the greatest and most notable al davis eyeopeners was when he drafted ray guy the punter in the first round in 1973. many called him a fool to draft a punter so high.

ray guy played 13 years and took home 7 pro bowl awards.

  119. al October 8, 2011 2:38 pm

aieesooos…your innocence is humbling. i believe all high school federation football allows for the use of a kicking tee even though not all kickers use them.

  120. al October 8, 2011 2:40 pm

oh…and a happy birthday to both wassupdoc and mrs. ahouse.

Hope our boys heal up! An bring their A game to San Jose st cause we on National tv an I hope our crowds start coming out! Espically for BYU but It’d be good to see at least 35,000 at every home game an get it rocking like the good ol days or at least like it did in 07 season but just keep winning an keep playing good against EVERYONE! An the crowds will come Winning cures everything! Go Warriors

BLEED GREEN!! Support the home team

    LizK,

Jett is a real gem for ASUH. At least to us, he’s involved in projects with more visibility than the person who was elected ASUH president. I wonder what happened with his idea/project with creating a student rec space in the Quarry?

Vote for Moniz for the Davey O’Brien Award. From what I saw in the games on TV this morning, Moniz has much more patience staying in the pocket and making successful throws than some of those QBs. Probably why those QBs are way down in the list of nominees.

  124. al October 8, 2011 2:57 pm

    random thoughts…

so all preseason and now after five games, it is clear that we are experiencing some difficulties in our placekicking.

is it because we have not the correct alignment and assignment?

is it because our personnel are not executing as a unit and/or as individuals?

is it because we are not snapping the ball in a timely fashion?

is it because the holder is taking too long to get the ball down?

is it because the kickers are approaching too slow?

is it because the kickers are not getting proper loft?

is it because (shudders) of all of the above?

okay, so i’m watching some timing issues post snap.

maybe, just maybe the first two kickers are not the best two guys?

maybe the hawaii kai kid is the best of the lot inspite of the fact that he is a walk-on who wasn’t really invited either.

maybe it is time to give this kid a shot.

maybe it is time for the coaches to eat crow and say we might have been wrong on these kickers so we gonna try this division 2 kicker from hawaii kai.

  125. al October 8, 2011 2:59 pm

    …and on another note.

having smu in the hawaii bowl against hawaii would produce an instant sell out.

    get your tickets already.

    mack did guarantee our appearance.

the winner gets to coach the warriors.

  126. al October 8, 2011 3:02 pm

    lizkauai…here’s my prediction.

in ten years, the new mayor will be introduced to the county.

“ladies and gentlemen, the new mayor of the county of kauai is none other than kauai’s own, JETT JASPER currently the co-owner of JJ’s broiler!”

  127. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:07 pm

Jori will probably be the winner!

  128. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:10 pm

Nebraska is having a difficult time scoring in the Big 10. Playing smash mouth football, but the other teams, Wisconsin and now Ohio State, got their share of hogs in the trenches and they are out scoring them easily.

  129. puhi October 8, 2011 3:15 pm

What I can’t believe is how a college kicker can’t kickoff into the end zone. We haven’t had that in a while. Since Jason Ah Yat?

  130. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:20 pm

Somewhere over the rainbow…I mean in the 808 there is a kicker who can kick. I am sure of it.

We have to pull a Mike Leach. Invite some random kid onto the team who was able to kick a FG in one of those half time contests at the games.

Now that is thinking outside the box. LOL

  131. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:24 pm

Utah State puts up 42 points in the first half, leads Wyoming 42-19. I hope they keep on improving and when they come to our house, they give us their best shot.

  132. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:27 pm

SMU got a walk on kicker when he read that none of the kickers on the roster had shown any positive progress in earning the position. Hover was enrolled at Blinn CC and pulled out when he learned that SMU had a need for a kicker.

  133. puhi October 8, 2011 3:32 pm

Justin Ah Yat, not Jason. Sorry brada.

  134. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:39 pm

Hmmmm Utah St. is looking good.

They made that first posession TD in the 2nd half look too damn easy. It took them all of a minute and 15 seconds to get a score….all without throwing a single pass.

  135. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 3:43 pm

    Nevada beats UNLV 30-0 …

  136. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:45 pm

    Wow…Wyoming’s defense is atrocious.

  137. whitey October 8, 2011 3:45 pm

  138. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 3:46 pm

  139. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:47 pm

    mih,

no surprise there. i said in the beginning that unlv would get 3 wins MAYBE 4 if lucky. some people made them out to be bigger than life after our loss to them.

bottom line they are not a good team.

  140. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:47 pm

Nevada up 36-0 over UNLV with 4 minutes in the game. Bring it on Wolfpack, when we venture to your house we want your stands full.

  141. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:53 pm

Stanford up 41-7 in the third quarter over Colorado. Looks like our BCS win won’t count for beans. Colorado will be 1-5 after today.

  142. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:53 pm

    Wyoming,

Here’s your hint. Stack the box with 9 guys already. lol

  143. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:56 pm

    Ralph,

The only difference for Colorado is the first 3 letters that comes before the number in their conference. They were near/at the bottom in the BIG, they are at/near the bottom in the PAC. Again, no surprise there.

  144. Ralph October 8, 2011 3:56 pm

Thanks Whitey, Snyder got them believing. Defense playing awesome, they had some low points, but enough to keep the Cats in the game until the offense came around.

  145. Stephen Tsai October 8, 2011 3:58 pm

  146. Stephen Tsai October 8, 2011 3:59 pm

    Puhi:

The Punahou kicker worked out with Hadden at UH this summer.

Well, at least for a day.

Not sure what happened with Mercado. He was supposed to give UH a look.

  147. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 3:59 pm

    How you doing?

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 4:04 pm

  149. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 4:07 pm

    UNLV v. UNR

    – –

    PASSING STATS:

UNLV – 8 yards (It was 0 with 5 minutes left in the 4th)

    UNR – 459

  150. Ralph October 8, 2011 4:09 pm

Doing fine, K State won, 24-17 over Missouri, they are 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big 12. Can’t get any better, and in a few hours, Na Wahine Volleyball. I’d say its a great day.

We remember and celebrate Al Davis’s legacy, to some he was a cancer, to us Raider fans, he won 3 super bowls and there are a lot of teams in the NFL without a single super bowl to grace their trophy room, he lead by his mantra “just win baby” and “commitment to excellence”>

  151. Ralph October 8, 2011 4:13 pm

and we were torched by 20 by UNLV. I hope only a few followed ST advice and bet their mortgage on the UNLV game, better still, I hope they took the points and gave some of their winnings to UHAD for being good sports. LOL

  152. Ralph October 8, 2011 4:18 pm

Stanford must have called off the Dawgs, game about over and its 48-7 over Colorado.

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 4:40 pm

    Ralph,

Did you see the Houston v. E. Carolina score?

    56-3 Houston.

We need to get them in the MWC. 6-0 in the season. Let the Big LEast take E. Carolina.

  154. Ralph October 8, 2011 4:48 pm

Casey Keenum, he graduates then Houston bottoms out next season. Houston is a long way for UH to go to for a fb game. Our subsidy to bring them to Hawaii would be expensive.

  155. d1shima October 8, 2011 5:00 pm

..and in the really big game,

    Linfield 73

    Puget Sound 7

  156. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 8, 2011 5:00 pm

    Ralph,

We travel to La Tech. I also know Houston is much more accessible. I think they remain solid after next year. We also need to rebuild, so its not really the right reason to not consider them.

  157. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 5:02 pm

Wow.. BYU taking it to SJSU… I thought it would be a closer game.

  158. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 5:03 pm

Houston would be a good addidion regardless of the travel subsidies.. I think they would draw a good crowd.

  159. Ralph October 8, 2011 5:10 pm

Houston is in a big city, but they don’t seem to draw any interest from the SEC, Big East or Big 12, got to be some other issue. The fb program is sound, is it academics? Pac 12 and Big 10 has high academic standards, I think a few schools in the big 12 also want to look into a schools academics before making an invitation.

  160. Mad Dog October 8, 2011 5:11 pm

Two UH future opponents, San Jose and BYU, playing on channel 1219. BYU controlling San Jose 23-3 late in 2nd quarter.

    line was UNR -20.5.

  164. papajoe2 October 8, 2011 5:40 pm

Over the past years, UH had trouble with the opponents’ tight end. San Jose State has a big tight end that many say is one of the best in the country.

  165. d1shima October 8, 2011 5:58 pm

    …and?

  166. madeinhawaii October 8, 2011 6:02 pm

Warriors vs SJSU will be the only FBS game played on Friday… that will probably mean a pretty big TV audience. Let’s hope our Warriors are really prepared to razzle-dazzle and win big!

  167. polywarrior4life October 8, 2011 6:04 pm

    Go Warriors!

  168. rainbowfan October 8, 2011 6:17 pm

Robby Toma (Punahou) caught a touchdown pass from T. Rees today in the first quarter in the Notre Dame game .

Manti Te’o had 5 solo and 5 assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss. He looks kind of bulky nowadays.

  169. 99club October 8, 2011 6:47 pm

Bettors who took the favorites today did very well. I think I only saw one or two top 25 teams not cover the spread. Undefeated teams rolling it up for BCS positioning?

Taking a break from watching the BYU-SJSU game…looks like the WAC and MWC are splitting this week’s games 2-2. I’m thinking Utah St. is going to be our toughest test in the WAC the way they’re playing.

  170. Slugger October 8, 2011 6:50 pm

    Eh, d1shima,

Congrats to the Linfield Wildcats! My niece is probably sorry to see her school get beaten up, though.

Mahalo to Coach Mack and the Warriors for the beautiful Green and White floral arrangement and kind words.

This Remembrance for Gary Aoki is like the best Warrior TV gate- ti leaves and all!

I held it together until the end of the special video when they showed Mr and Mrs Kymry at all the games and played the voice mail that Coach Mack left for Kymry on her birthday.

    God Bless!

  174. cocobean October 8, 2011 9:01 pm

    Coach Mack, decent human being.

Al Davis, innovator, maverick. Meddlesome, egotisitical. most loved, most hated owner. Cult like figure, inspired phrases used by many fan bases – ______ Nation, _______ for life. His franchise was different from others, like how the Marines are different from other branches of the Armed Forces. Commitment to Excellence and Just Win Baby. Describes a Raider aand a Marine.

Notr Dame, does a 10-2 record get them into a BCS Bowl?

  175. Slugger October 8, 2011 9:02 pm

What a kind gesture by the Coach & the team for Gary.

  176. Kevin October 8, 2011 9:32 pm

Not sure what Utah State’s offensive line looks like, size-wise, but the last few seasons, our offensive live DWARFED them allowing guys like Leon Wright-Jackson and Alex Green to run roughshot all over them, thus making our passing attack even more potent.

Now, we know our offensive line is far from 100% in many ways, but this match up in the trenches will be another indicator of ANOTHER WAC foe’s weaknesses exploited by us.

I said it so many times last season when people were all excited and worried to death about Nevada and I kept saying we’ve had Nevada’s number, especially the running QB factor for a while and even at our weakest in 2009 IN Reno, Nevada only managed to win by 10 points or so.

So, Utah State looks like the better of all the WAC opponents, but what does that say about the WAC as a whole????

    USU comes here.

Logan Utah is at elevation and teams coming down to sea level are NOT the same.

Last time I’ll say anything about Utah State.

Barring further injuries to OUR team, we’ll manage the Aggies by two touchdowns at the LEAST.

  177. Kevin October 8, 2011 9:33 pm

#177, I meant to say USU’s DEFENSIVE line.

  178. Kevin October 8, 2011 9:34 pm

    Again for good measure….

#177 I meant to say our Oline dwarfed USU’s DEFENSIVE LINE.

  179. Kevin October 8, 2011 9:36 pm

Yes.. sometimes trying to figure out a win or a loss can be as simple as knowing “you’ve had their number”.

  185. Ralph October 8, 2011 11:13 pm

slow evening so I decided to look at our chances of finishing the year with a winning record and a bowl invite. I like our chances, look at our opponents, not exactly murderers row!

    Colorado 1-5

    Washington 4-1

    UNLV 1-4

    UC Davis 1-4

    La Tech 2-4

    San Jose State 2-4

    NMST 2-3

    Idaho 1-5

    Utah State 2-3

    Nev. Reno 2-3

    Fresno 2-4

    Tulane 2-4

    BYU 4-2

To date we are scheduled to play only two teams with current winning records. We are very capable of winning 7 games this season and make it to our Hawaii Bowl. Cha Ching, another bonus for the coaches and AD for a bowl appearance.

  186. Ralph October 8, 2011 11:22 pm

next season we face a tougher MWC schedule, no gimmes, UNLV is near the bottom with a 1-4 record and we all remember how they got that one win.

JD was thinking ahead, he scheduled two teams, Lamar and South Alabama, that are moving to D1 and starting their football program and therefore they won’t reach their limit of 85 scholarships by the time they fly over to play us in 2012.

I am sure he will get a lot more fun out of it than I will.

  194. Kekoa October 9, 2011 2:27 am

ST ~ I’ll have to talk to your boss Mike R. about hiring jm2375 as the late nite online editor. She caught a coupla glaring errors in the WVB breaking news reports.

Hello Midnight & Barbra! Were you able to watch the Playoff Game in Arlington yesterday?

    Ok…back to bed!

  195. kawika49 October 9, 2011 2:32 am

Good AF going. No need worry about the option.

  196. Garret October 9, 2011 2:46 am

Maybe cause they were playing at home.

The Texas-Oklahoma game is played in Dallas, which is the same distance away from Austin, TX as it is from Norman, Oklahoma. Half of the stadium’s tickets are sold to Oklahoma fans and half of the stadium’s tickets are sold to Texas fans.

  197. link October 9, 2011 2:46 am

that’s, link to AF Academy story.

  198. Garret October 9, 2011 2:50 am

I get *no* fun from posting the link that Air Force is going to the Big East. However, I think that it was clear for awhile that this was going to happen and we *cannot* bury our heads in the sand and ignore conference realignment because it is really hurting UH.

When Air Force was talking recently about going football-only in the MWC, I refrained from posting then that was a perfect excuse for them to work on a football-only setup for the Big East.

The Falcons are looking to fly far away to save the Big East from disintegration, with the hope that fellow military academies Navy and Army will join them in the league.

“Our interest is high in the Big East. That’s fair to say,” Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh told me Saturday.

    “This stuff is moving fast.”

He expects that the future of Air Force athletics will be decided by the end of October. The plan would have the Falcons joining the Big East only in football, while moving teams in other sports to the Missouri Valley Conference.

    http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_19073868

  199. Garret October 9, 2011 2:51 am

Air Force has a good reason why they don’t want the Big 12–it is too competitive for them. Plus, getting Navy as a conference member is attractive for Air Force.

“We were approached by the Big 12, and I told them we’re not a good fit for that conference. In the Big 12, geography makes sense, the economics make sense, but recruiting makes no sense for us. I can’t recruit against Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,” Mueh said.

“That’s why I turned down the Big 12. I can’t do that to my kids, because they’ll get beat up. I’d love the extra $12 million or whatever it would be per year from the TV money. And I know how I’d spend the money. I’d build a new soccer stadium, and I’d build a new baseball facility, all in one year. But I can’t do that.”

Loyalty is dead in college football, and television contracts for football have gone insane. Greed rules.

  200. Garret October 9, 2011 2:53 am

Air Force and Navy have been lobbying Army to join the Big East…in another words, Air Force decided to join the Big East quite some time ago and everything else was a smokescreen.

Air Force and Navy have negotiated extensively to ensure they move together to the Big East, and gone so far as to lobby Army to join them as football partners in the league.

Mueh insisted: “The Big East wants Army. Absolutely.” The Black Knights, however, have concerns their program might not be ready for the rigors of playing West Virginia and other top teams in the Big East on a regular basis.

  201. Garret October 9, 2011 2:55 am

Now the MWC/CUSA merger makes sense. Both conferences will be raided and the MWC won’t be able to get AQ status with this below-average season on the field and with the loss of BYU, Utah, TCU, and Air Force in such a short period of time.

UH will be paying travel subsidies to Utah State or other former WAC schools soon, while getting much less TV money. $%^#!

  202. Garret October 9, 2011 2:58 am

Link’s story points out that joining the Big East is best for the Air Force Academy, so this goes beyond just sports.

Mueh said the Big East is an attractive option for Air Force football for a few reasons. He met with Big East commissioner John Marinatto in early August, as the conference gathered information on Air Force. After Pittsburgh and Syracuse left the Big East, Marinatto called Mueh to gauge his interest.

Money is a factor. Air Force makes $1.2 million annually from the Mountain West’s television deal, and the Big East thinks it could get $9-10 million annually for each school in its next television deal. Money isn’t the only factor, however. Mueh said he turned down interest from the Big 12 earlier this year because Air Force didn’t match up well with Big 12 schools in recruiting, budget and enrollment.

Mueh said a reason Air Force is interested in the Big East option is exposure on the East Coast. Air Force recruits nationally, and not just for sports.

“It’s a market we never get into,” Mueh said. “And this isn’t just about football recruiting, it’s about recruiting for the Air Force Academy.”

  203. mctruck October 9, 2011 3:16 am

Well, Wyoming got pounded by Utah State last night; I sure hope the MWC extends an invitation to Utah State, seeing how there is no representation from the state of Utah as it is right now….USU’s program is up an coming as I see it.

  204. mctruck October 9, 2011 3:18 am

SMU is trying to find a BCS conference to adopt them….???

  205. Kekoa October 9, 2011 3:18 am

Thanks Garret. Always good to see your perspective on things. My Pops was retired AF, so of course he was a BIG fan of the Academy. I’m not sure about the benefit of their move. As long as they maintain their inter-service rivalry, I’m ok with whatever they decide. (Heh!…as if I had any say in what they do!)

  206. web developer October 9, 2011 3:39 am

Interesting article, going to rememeber this one.

  207. mctruck October 9, 2011 3:53 am

A couple stories on the internet this morning: 1st one about a man robbing a bank and goes directly to a resturant and orders, pizza and beer; 2nd one where a customer who uses medical/marijuana…is turned in to the cops by a pizza delivery man. A qb who used to deliver pizza…..must be a pizza connection somewhere????? bwaaahahaha!!

  208. mctruck October 9, 2011 3:56 am

If ALL the service academies can muster more money, all the power to them, they deserve it.

  209. mctruck October 9, 2011 3:59 am

I think Houston might be the next BCS invite to where ever??

  210. wafan October 9, 2011 4:55 am

    Good morning everyone!

  211. wafan October 9, 2011 4:56 am

Another beautiful day in the PNW!

Well, if you like clouds, rain and cool temps.

  212. Garret October 9, 2011 5:04 am

Thanks Garret. Always good to see your perspective on things. My Pops was retired AF, so of course he was a BIG fan of the Academy. I’m not sure about the benefit of their move. As long as they maintain their inter-service rivalry, I’m ok with whatever they decide.

    Kekoa,

Here are the benefits for Air Force:

    1. $10 mil to $15 mil more from TV per year. That does not even count the extra $1 mil for being in an AQ conference. The service academies don’t have an unlimited check for Athletics–they have to get donations and scramble for money also.

    2. Increased coverage and exposure in the East Coast. The Air Force Academy recruits heavily in the East Coast and now they will have much more coverage in the East Coast media. Their games will be watched on ESPN channels so prospective cadets will hear all about the Academy…much better exposure than being on the mtn.

    3. Air Force’s non-football sports will be on a more equal competitive environment. That has been a concern that their AD has been talking about for some time now…recently the on-field performance of their non-football sports has been tough.

The extra money that the service academies make lessen the worry that tax dollars will have to subsidize their Athletic Departments. All areas of the DOD have to look at saving money–this is a way for Air Force, Navy, and possibly Army to increase their revenue significantly and get a much bigger platform (free commercial air time during each game) to advertise to prospective cadets.

  213. d1shima October 9, 2011 5:07 am

    Great Morning All!

    wafan,

Keep that stuff up north, would ya! 😉

    al,

Hope that kid you know isn’t an OL…need lotsa work there!

  214. kawika49 October 9, 2011 5:12 am

Ok mGarret, then the VMI, Texas A&M(Marines), Army, Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy; should have their own conference.

  215. wafan October 9, 2011 5:28 am

Looks more and more like a form of the pre-break-away WAC might be back. Expect UH to pay a lot in pay-to-play cash.

    Shucks.

  216. wafan October 9, 2011 5:29 am

And, way to go wild, Cats!

    Whoo-hoo, 2x!!!

  218. Ralph October 9, 2011 5:34 am

It’s nearly time for the Raiders to strap it up and “Just win, baby” for Al and demolish the Texans. I hope they come out energized and play their best game of the year, and that includes Jason Campbell. I also hope Campbell can hit a receiver beyond 10 yards.

  219. Quirita October 9, 2011 5:43 am

This is an exciting season because of the coming of splendid sports games. With more and more fans of sports becoming fascinated with sports, many outlet stores and online shops are hot selling different kinds of cheap jerseys, including cheap nfl jerseys, cheap nba jerseys, cheap nhl jerseys, cheap mlb jerseys and so on. To be honest, I’m crazy about nfl jerseys best, especially nfl steelers jerseys, nfl cardinals jerseys, nfl saints jerseys, nfl chargers jerseys and nfl cowboys jerseys. Why? Because I’m just the fan of these teams and wish to play football like them on the court.

  220. Garret October 9, 2011 5:44 am

    Sagarin has been updated.

    WAC:

    53 Nevada

    86 UH

    96 Fresno State

    107 SJSU

    112 Utah State

    115 La Tech

    150 NMSU

    152 Idaho

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm

  221. Garret October 9, 2011 5:46 am

This is BY FAR the worst year for the MWC during the 2008-2011 BCS evaluation period…bad timing for the appeal.

    MWC:

    7 BSU

    30 TCU

    57 Air Force

    65 SDSU

    90 Wyoming

    123 Colorado State

    131 UNLV

    202 New Mexico

  222. Garret October 9, 2011 5:48 am

How much does losing Louisville hurt the Big East’s numbers? Air Force is far superior to Louisville for AQ status.

    24 West Virginia

    32 Rutgers

    36 South Florida

48 Pittsburgh (soon to be an ACC school, but will count for the BE for now)

55 Syracuse (same thing as Pitt)

    58 Cincy

    72 UCONN

    93 Louisville

  224. Garret October 9, 2011 5:56 am

Colorado State, UNLV, and New Mexico guarantee that the Big East will be above the MWC in the average team rating category used for AQ status. With nonconference play basically over, there is no way for the MWC to raise itself much in the standings.

  225. Pomai October 9, 2011 6:27 am

I really want to see the MWC and CUSA merge to one conference.

  226. Afra October 9, 2011 6:44 am

Nowadays, cheap nfl jerseys, cheap nba jerseys, cheap nhl jerseys, cheap mlb jerseys are hot selling, among them, nfl steelers jerseys, nfl cardinals jerseys, nfl saints jerseys, nfl chargers jerseys and nfl cowboys jerseys are most popular because of their strong teams and attractive players. Besides, in order to satisfy fans, indianapolis colts jersey, new york jets jerseys and green bay packers jersey are designed delicately and kick off the market.

One thing I would like to comment on is that weightloss routine fast is possible by the proper diet and exercise. Ones size not just affects appearance, but also the quality of life. Self-esteem, despression symptoms, health risks, and also physical skills are impacted in fat gain. It is possible to make everything right whilst still having a gain. Should this happen, a problem may be the perpetrator. While an excessive amount food rather than enough work out are usually accountable, common medical conditions and widely used prescriptions might greatly help to increase size.
