Just desserts

It’s a regular practice week for the Warriors (in preparation for the New Mexico State game), only practice is in El Paso and the workouts will be spread among UTEP and two high school facilities this week.
Today, according to UH’s Derek Inouchi, was a normal Monday. The Warriors went through conditioning drills at UTEP.
They will have regular practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at high schools, then a walk-through at UTEP Friday. Not sure why they’re not having a walk-through at NMSU.
“Ferd,” who stayed on the Mainland, is going to attend NMSU coach Hal Mumme’s news conference today. He said it’s for the research. I think it’s because the last time he was in Las Cruces, he found a restaurant that made sopaipillas, his favorite dessert. They are pretty tasty. Sumo, finding sopaipillas and exacting revenge on co-workers who spill Diet Cokes on his lap are his favorite hobbies.

Oops, forgot to remove my Cowboys names from Friday.

    Have a great day today!

So any roster changes for the NMSU game?

  9. Rob25 November 3, 2008 8:29 am

koakane – 48 hour rule is in effect. Plus didn’t the socializing at the MaiTai Bar get it out of your mind yet?

  10. Rob25 November 3, 2008 8:30 am

OK you got 30 minutes more and then it’s done.

Do we have to count 48 hours from the end of the game? If so, then you get some more time.

  11. Pride. November 3, 2008 8:31 am

If any of you have a friend’s request from me? Please delete it. Koakane is one friend too many already. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Dragged this over from da oddah side…

    November 3rd, 2008 at 8:27 am
Liz ~ Just read your post about the House-Gate you and the Warrior Wahine are hosting on Kauai this week. It would be nice to travel over next season and sample a neighbor Island-Gate.

Pride ~ It was recommended by the Wessai Chaptah at yesterday’s high level BCC, that you should be flown in to deliver the motivational locker room talk to the team…with a follow-up ‘fever pitch’ to them at half-time. We are collecting old junky laptops for you to toss around to make your point.

  14. Stretch November 3, 2008 8:33 am

pride – crap, i thought you really wanted to be my friend.

Two can be as sad as one, but the lonliest number is the number one.

  19. koakane™ November 3, 2008 8:42 am

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid November 3, 2008 8:43 am

    Pride,
It’s too late. I already clicked on “yes”. Sorry buddy. It’s official. We’re “friends”.

  21. Maverick November 3, 2008 8:47 am

Our Sunday mornings used to be Sopaipilla’s, with honey and cinnamon & Champaigne in bed. Now the cinnamon rolls have replaced the Sopaipilla’s.

    Not a bad tradeoff.

  22. ryan November 3, 2008 8:50 am

Any idea why the coaches didn’t challenge that fumble call on the 5 yard line in the 3rd. It looked like a forward pass to Libre since Alexander was behind him.

  23. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 8:53 am

    No updates on recruiting.
And there will be no changes to the travel roster. Josh Leonard and Kealoha Pilares were on the original travel roster.

  24. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 8:54 am

Sopaipillas are a lot better than the picture I posted. The pic makes them look like tea bags.

  25. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 8:57 am

RE: Not challenging the fumble near the GL va option.

Why did the coaches in the booth NOT tell GM to challenge it? Better perspective up there, no?

  26. Stretch November 3, 2008 8:57 am

ST – Who are they going to send up to replace Mana Silva who is headed home with an injury?? Also, I thought the picture was the dessert from New Orleans

  27. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 8:58 am

So Sopaipillas are like flat malasadas?

  28. midori7 November 3, 2008 8:58 am

  29. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 8:58 am

    Ryan:
From the perspective on the field, they said they didn’t know it was a forward pitch. But we could tell in the press box, so I think it must have appeared that way in the coaches’ booth. Maybe it’s because the play was designed to be an option pitch. It just turned into a shovel because Libre was moving fast.

  30. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 8:58 am

Might be too expensive to just fly one peep up to NM?

  31. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 9:01 am

    OK, I stand corrected:
Josh Rice is going to replace Mana Silva.
    Thanks, Stretch. (And stop smirking.)

  32. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 9:03 am

Josh rice? So they are going to replace a DB with a LB? Isn’t NMSU, like, a passing team?? Other Safeties in the USU game did not do so well IMHO……/shrug I guess thats why the coaches get paid the beeg buks.

  33. Stretch November 3, 2008 9:04 am

ST – no time for smirking, too busy at work.

  34. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 9:06 am

Rice is more of a special teams player.
I’m not sure there are any other safeties to bring. They already have Robinson, Monteilh, Thomas, Porlas and Spencer Smith here. Torres, Galdeira, Nauahi and Mouton can play safety, if needed.

  35. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 9:07 am

    Stretch:
You’re not working on the Manoa grass field project this morning?

  36. Stretch November 3, 2008 9:09 am

    Re: Challenging Calls

There have been a few plays which I thought Hawaii should have challenged through out the season, but chose not too.

I don’t think the coaches upstairs have a tv that is specifically for them to review any play. They have the regular tv broadcast so only if it gets replayed on tv, that’s the only way the coaches can double check. Unless the coaches in the box can have the video guy from UH taping the game rewind his tape and review on the small screen??

  37. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 9:10 am

ST: Do you think we need to play other safeties? Strictly off the record, ya know, as an observer like the rest of us. Coaches won’t hold it against you. =)

  38. Rob25 November 3, 2008 9:17 am

Hey Stretch is working on marketing!

Oh and Pride, too late I went through all of that stuff because I thought that you needed a friend! Now I see you have DPK so with him and Koakane…you don’t need enemies either. J/K

  39. Rob25 November 3, 2008 9:18 am

I liked the Beignets! Too bad we can’t get them over here…well I guess I could flatten a malasada and put powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar. Somehow, it doesn’t seem like it would be the same.

  40. Rob25 November 3, 2008 9:19 am

OK gotta go do some “marketing” and will be back later.

Interesting talk on both stations about BCS picture and will it be Boise State or Utah as BCS buster.

  41. Stretch November 3, 2008 9:23 am

    Re: Punt Returns

Since we don’t really rush the punter, would it be beneficial for the punt return team to have a “personal protector” maybe 10-15 yards in front of the punt returner?? It seemed the coverage was beating the defenders down field and was able to get to Bain. The protector can keep at least the first guy off of Bain.

  42. Jay November 3, 2008 9:27 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

    Another sunny day in paradise.

  43. duffer November 3, 2008 9:29 am

    Stretch,

The Kona Country Club golf coupons are in the mail.

  44. takoboy November 3, 2008 9:32 am

any1 know what tcu’s rank is in the bcs. what if they’re able to knock off utah would they be able to jump bsu in the rankings with 2 pretty impressive victories.

sad to see that the warriors might not be going to pullman after all, was looking forward to returning there for a long time now. oh well qwest is a decent option and besides…vegas is the main course anywayz

  45. Stretch November 3, 2008 9:33 am

duffer – thanks. will look for them

  46. takoboy November 3, 2008 9:35 am

whatever happened the the fade stop, i know the timing can be tough but it seems like GA has enough touch and salas seems like he should be able to run it…

  47. Ronnie November 3, 2008 9:37 am

    takoboy –

    Utah is # 8
    Boise is # 10
    TCU is # 12

  48. Ronnie November 3, 2008 9:38 am

Ok, on our way to the LoCal Calf Call.

    Blog you all later 😀

  49. mauiwarrior November 3, 2008 9:38 am

anybody feeling a little shady on some play offensive play calls? I felt that some things could have been different…….i was under the impression that Inoke would be used differently than Alexander, seemed like they had similar plays called for both of them……..Why is our oline getting beat so badly so consistently……….anybody have the answers????

  50. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 9:39 am

If TCU beats Utah, I think they leapfrog Benson St. U.

  51. Garret November 3, 2008 9:40 am

any1 know what tcu’s rank is in the bcs. what if they’re able to knock off utah would they be able to jump bsu in the rankings with 2 pretty impressive victories.

    tacoboy,

TCU is #12 in the BCS standings. However, I don’t think they can jump BSU in the rankings if both win out because there is a computer (and poll) penalty for their loss.

  52. Garret November 3, 2008 9:41 am

    For the BCS:

    BSU: 0.6529
    TCU: 0.5442

  53. Maverick November 3, 2008 9:41 am

    I agree-
That pic of the sopaipilla looks like it was made by Nestea

Yes xxFaithxx- There like a flat malasada
Ours looked had the shape of a big croissant. Hollow in the middle so you can pour tons of honey inside.

  54. Garret November 3, 2008 9:42 am

Have fun at the Calf Call Ronnie! Lori has been running errands all day and I am car-less now. Plus, I have a ton of work to get done today…

  55. d1島 November 3, 2008 9:44 am

    sopaipillas pic
reminds me of a plate of baklava
    Mmmmmm…… 🙂

  56. Garret November 3, 2008 9:45 am

Some Warrior-related election mention in a Utah paper.

Walking down the street was Clarence Tuioti-Mariner and two friends who said they were from the University of Hawaii, visiting Utah for Saturday’s football game in Logan against Utah State University.

Hawaii is Barack Obama’s birthplace, but the three said that didn’t mean they weren’t sick of listening to the campaign.

“There’s a lot of good stuff that they’re saying,” Tuioti-Mariner said, “but I just want it over with. It’s crazy. But it’s good a lot of people are trying to have their own opinion about Barack Obama and the other guy.”

  57. Garret November 3, 2008 9:46 am

Comparison of Tebow and Colt last season.

If you look just at the Passing numbers, Colt Brennan was better all around. Tebow threw for 32 TD’s, six INT’s, 3,286 yards, and had a completion percentage of 66.9. Brennan, like Quinn out threw his Heisman opponent in virtually every category, except the TO’s were more common. Brennan threw for 38 TD’s, a mind boggling 17 INT’s, 4,343 yards, and had a completion percentage of 70.4.

Tebow also ran for 23 TD’s and 895 yards which inevitably put him over the top.

  58. Garret November 3, 2008 9:47 am

Bess was mentioned in this positive review of Miami’s WR play yesterday.

Davone Bess added two catches for 28 yards, including an impressive catch as he was sliding along the turf.

  59. XxFaithxX November 3, 2008 9:48 am

    RE: Play calling.

I feel that RL is just being too “Cute” at times. You have our pocket passer (GA) running options and or Spread/Option QB throwing deep. Play to your strengths might be the best thing to do?

  60. Garret November 3, 2008 9:49 am

Another article where Mike Washington feels that he should have been playing more instead of Bess/RGM. But his last quote seems to indicate that he wasn’t working as hard as he could have in past seasons. Of course, he knew he wasn’t going to get much playing time so many players lose focus in practice then.

Washington had to adjust to sitting on the sidelines while the Rainbow Warriors set passing records. He had a hard time enjoying Hawaii’s historic run last year, catching too few passes from Heisman Trophy candidate Colt Brennan and playing too little of a role in its undefeated season.

“It tested my faith,” said Washington, who had six receptions for 101 yards the past two seasons. “There were times I was thinking about transferring, but I didn’t want to think negative.”

Now, the 5-foot-8, 176-pound senior with 4.3 speed has developed into Hawaii’s leading receiver. He had five catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns against Nevada on Oct. 26.

“My first two years, I was caught up in the hype of Hawaii,” he said. “My whole motivation now is football.”

  61. Bulla November 3, 2008 9:57 am

    aloha Tsaikos,

back to the grind, protecting the natives from the tourists. if the numbers continue to go the way they are, my job gets a lot easier…..oh well.

Go Warriors, las cruces is 2 steps from nowhere…..it’s your’s for the taking, just gotta want it!

  62. mauiwarrior November 3, 2008 10:00 am

Note to RL on Play Calling: WWJD?

  63. takoboy November 3, 2008 10:03 am

thanx all for da bcs info. gonna be very interesting, will the bcs be able to pull 9 teams from the big 6. is there a wins requirement that must be reached for a team like ohio state. sorry for da bcs talk but i cannot talk about the warriors w/o being too negative. saturday’s loss still stings me so i’ll choose not to talk about them at all. 4 (i say 5) games to go this year, but how is next year not a rebuilding year as well with all the losses on d.

won’t talk much else about them but i’m still a die hard so GOOOOO WARRIORS 🙂

  64. madeinhawaii November 3, 2008 10:04 am

Election day tomorrow… Hmmm… which presidential pairing would be best for the advancement of high tech?

Not important.. focus… Football.. UH.. Warrior… NMSU… gotta win!

    Hey, morning all!

  65. Garret November 3, 2008 10:07 am

    takoboy,

There is no wins requirement for the BCS, but there is a limitation of 2 teams maximum per conference. That is actually very, very important because the Big 12 is dominating the top 12 BCS spots, and Utah/BSU/TCU are in the top 12 also. That means that if the BCS conferences cannot fill all of the BCS spots, they will have to take *2* teams from non-BCS conferences.

If the season ended today, I think you’d see both Utah and BSU get into the BCS automatically. The winner of the Utah/TCU game will be in the top 12, and BSU will stay in the top 12 if they win out. So, if the Big 12 keeps its top-12 BCS spots (Texas/Texas Tech/Oklahoma/Oklahoma State), then the BCS will probably be forced to take 2 non-BCS conference teams. That would be major money for UH…

  66. takoboy November 3, 2008 10:19 am

frankly, it would be a crime to take a 2nd team from the big east, acc, and pac 10. it all comes down to Ohio state and who wants to watch a slow tressel led squad fade in a bcs bowl again…what would be really interesting is if utah beats tcu and loses to byu. no matters as long as bsu wins out i guess. and i sure as hell hope chris peterson don’t leave for UW, i’m thinking if he didn’t leave for ucla he won’t leave for washington, maybe hoping rather than thinking as we need him to stay in the wac.

    go warriors

  67. BowsForever November 3, 2008 10:38 am

$400k for each team in the BCS buster’s conference, as I recall. Go Boise, I guess. 😉

  68. Sledge696 November 3, 2008 10:39 am

It’s coming up on Game #10 and the UH Coaching Staff is still on the,
“Ok, lets try this and see if it works” gameplan. Lets move so and so to here and change so and so to here. Dah……
I can see why you would rather talk about sopaipillas than UH Football.
Warriors? I don’t think so. They should go back to calling themselves>
Rainbows. They are not deserving of the Warrior Status.

  69. jm2375 November 3, 2008 10:40 am

Takoboy – at this point, it would be crime to take any team from the Big East or ACC, since none of them are higher than TCU. BC mentioned this morning that they’re not even in the top 20. Could that be right?

  70. Buffoman November 3, 2008 10:43 am

It’s way too late to do anything now, BUT, just given that the o-line’s struggles were noted during spring and fall practice, and there was the fact that Tyler’s situation was known amongst coaches, a remedy could have been…get a tight end or large h-back in place to help with the blocking of the rush d-ends.

Look the run and shoot does not call for a tight end BUT if your q-back is either getting creamed, hurried or picked off because the o-line cannot contain the rush, why force the issue? Make the change to address the problem.

It’s sort of anti-climatic at the moment but just looking at the situation, the o-line starts the offense and if that piece of the foundation is not set the strategy (in this case the 4 wide run and shoot) won’t function. Throw in an inexperienced q-back and we have what we have.

I love the 4 wide Run and shoot, but if the personnel is not there to make it work, you have to make a move away from what is loved to what will work, even if it is a temporary fix.

  71. BowsForever November 3, 2008 10:47 am

ESPN had an interview with Chris Petersen, and near the end he basically commented on how fortunate he was to be able to coach in one place for as long as he has. It’ll be interesting to see, if he makes it to a second BCS bowl and especially if he wins, if he stays put. And as far as economics go, I wouldn’t necessarily blame him if he gets a better pay package — Coach Mack makes $250k more than he does, and JJ’s salary, well, ’nuff said.

  72. Committed Road Warrior November 3, 2008 10:47 am

    jm2375,

Yep. The only ranked Big East team is West Virginia, AT NUMBER 25!!!. There are four ACC teams ranked 19th, 20th, 22nd, and 23rd (North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland respectively).

I’m not worried about these teams because I feel the Big East will only get its champion (other than Pitt, there’s nobody else behind them) in. The ACC, despite 4 teams in the bottom of the rankings, will pseudo-“beat each other up” and could possibly end up with only one ranked team, maybe two, when it’s all said and done.

I would be rooting AGAINST Ohio State, Michigan State, and Cal the rest of the way. I agree with takoboy that it would be a crime if the Big 10 and Pac 10 got a second team in. I don’t think the Big East or ACC will even have a shot at getting a second team in…..leaving the door open for two non-BCS teams to potentially get in.

  73. Stretch November 3, 2008 10:47 am

Sledge696 – You can look at it another way. Would you rather the coaches continue to do what they have been doing and NOT make changes?? Changes have to be made to give the team the best opportunity to win games THIS SEASON. Unless you would rather the team pack it up and prepare guys for next year??

  74. djmitcho November 3, 2008 10:50 am

In the BCS, an at-large selection must have at least 9 wins and be ranked in the top 14 of the BCS.

bcsfootball.org has all of the confusing rules

  75. takoboy November 3, 2008 10:52 am

    ah good point jm2375.

let’s see pitt, west virginia, south florida, cincy, uconn – pass pass pass

let’s try da acc – miami, fla state, ga tech, clemson, unc, ncstate, – pass on all those too

i know it’s a pipedream and it ain’t never gonna happen especially with our economy and fuel prices but in years like this, we seriously could take 10 teams from the wac/mwc and form a conference that’s better than those 2. shoot take penn state and ohio state from the big 10 and we could compete with them as well. sorry now i’m just babbling stuff that in this bcs age aint neva gonna happen.

  76. BowsForever November 3, 2008 10:52 am

Play-calling and coaching didn’t play a significant role in the SJSU and Utah State losses, IMHO. It was a lack of execution by the team. A few less turnovers by Hawaii at SJSU, and a few more caught balls and less penalties at Utah State, and we could easily have been looking at 6-3 right now.

  77. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 10:56 am

I get a lot of e-mails from frustrated fans.
It’s good for them to vent. It’s better than taking it out on co-workers.
I don’t have any answers, except I think it’s going to get better.
There’s a lot of talent in the wings. Paipai Falemalu is going to be very good. But it would take someone extraordinary to be as good as Adam Leonard or Solomon Elimimian.
The good news is there will be returning starters at eight of the 11 offensive positions. I think Ryan Henry, Dustin Blount and Kealoha Pilares can fill in at two slots; Jovonte Taylor and Mike Tinoco are going to boost the wideout positions. Joe Avery has been coming along, and Royce Pollard should be more polished next season.
But there will be some openings on the defensive line and in the secondary. And, of course, UH will really miss Ingram, Kelly and Grasso.

  78. Garret November 3, 2008 10:57 am

    djmitcho,

I cannot imagine a scenario where a team has 8 wins or less and is in the top 14 in the BCS. Many of the computer rankings are set up to automatically dock points for losses, and the polls punish teams that lose (especially later in the season).

  79. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 10:58 am

    takoboy:
it is good to have a plan. but the mwc teams are happy where they are.

  80. d1島 November 3, 2008 10:59 am

    Wassup All!

Seems like there’s still some frustration and the consequential venting going on.
We are just about at the end of the 48-hour rule so hopefully the team is well on its way to moving on to NaMaSU.

    GO WARRIORS!

  81. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 11:02 am

Division I obviously needs a playoff system. When it does happen one day, people will say: how did we live without it all of those years?
It’s sort of like the H-3, I guess.
(Notice how I stayed away from the rail, Con-Con and SuperFerry debates?)

  82. d1島 November 3, 2008 11:02 am

    Hmm…
    that was pretty well-timed 😉

  83. djmitcho November 3, 2008 11:02 am

    Garret,
I can’t imagine a team having only 9 wins is in the top 14 either. I guess when you have conference champs of BCS conferences with only 9 wins, you know there won’t be a second team coming out of that conference as an at-large

  84. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 11:02 am

Now, if UH loses to NMSU, vent all you wish …

  85. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 11:04 am

On the bright side, Princess Leila’s videos return Wednesday.
Of course, I think she owes us an apology for every week she has not posted on our blog. Or, to settle all debts, she needs to go to lunch with Chawan Cut.

right now thinking back i don’t know which one hurts more, sjsu where we give up one gimmick play on d the whole game and lose but turnovers especially giving them the ball on the 10 yard line and give up an 8 yd pass on 3rd down to a TE, and some BS where their kicker kicks 2 career long FG’s. or this past saturday’s debacle, leaving at least 21 pts on the board. our o-line getting blown up on 3rd and 1 from the 1, pad level and leverage, i’ll stop at that and change subjects on a dime. i love the look of the nuggets now w/ some toughness in chauncy and mcdyess. too bad, though, less pt for AC i’m thinking. still making up for their mistake in letting camby go.

I think it’s all about money, and there’s more money with a playoff system.
The NCAA basketball tournament earns enough to support the NCAA.

yup i know the mwc is happy but can’t a boy have a dream 🙂

    nah j/k

  94. Stephen Tsai November 3, 2008 11:11 am

    tako:
I think this week’s was a tougher loss because it was such a winnable game. Utah State was mentally down after losing to Fresno State the previous week. The crowd was small. USU was without its starting center. And USU didn’t even pick its starting corners until game time. The golden rule is don’t lose to teams you’re supposed to beat.

  95. d1島 November 3, 2008 11:16 am

    Stephen,

IDK How much more $ would be out there than is already being made by the BCS system.
A lot of teams that aren’t making it to the BCS games are making big bank with every home date. i.e.- Does Tennessee give up a 100,000+ home date for a 8-team play-off system? They are already assured of BCS $ whether they play in January or not. And that’s just one team in one conference.
That’s a lot of $ to make up with 7 play-off games that will be played in place of existing bowls (the current BCS games)

  96. d1島 November 3, 2008 11:20 am

    Stephen,

Has Mack already had his press conference?
    Anything interesting?

48-Hour Rule Infraction here but I couldn’t help it when I read this:

    BowsForever:

    November 3rd, 2008 at 10:52 am
Play-calling and coaching didn’t play a significant role in the SJSU and Utah State losses, IMHO. It was a lack of execution by the team. A few less turnovers by Hawaii at SJSU, and a few more caught balls and less penalties at Utah State, and we could easily have been looking at 6-3 right now.

I could not have said it any better than this.

In my opinion this is as simple as it gets when it comes to the loss on Saturday night. We can talk day and night about the o-line, YAC’s, play calling and while there are some things to improve on in all aspects of our game, it all breaks down to execution.

Considering how we were able to move the ball on Saturday and get to the redzone is a postive, not converting is a BIG negative.

6-3 over all and 5-1 in conference play could have easily been achieved.

I read elsewhere that once again we are favorites going into Las Cruces this Saturday, only by 2 points.

The season hasn’t gone the way most of us thought with losses to SJSU and Utah St. It has been frustrating at times but UH still has a chance for the Hawaii Bowl game. It will not be easy but still attainable. I can guarantee that Mack is not going to give up on this season. He will do anything and everything he can to get the W’s.

  101. Kaimuki Kid November 3, 2008 11:40 am

Been catching up with the blog all morning and I had an observation. UA shoes, is there a design problem with UA shoes, with all the all the ankles problems we have been havng this year, is it the shoes? I recall either Bulla or Barry Markowitz comment about UA shoes when UH signed the contract earlier this year. Something about no support….LWJ seems to still be bothered by his arch problem or is it turf toe? Ho doesnot seem right. So many sprained ankles…I don’t think they need to add anymore plays, just execute the ones they have better, limit the miscues…We are moving the ball ok now but cannot make mistakes in the red-zone. One last thing holding penalties. on couple of the long gains by USU there was some blatant holding that were never called, one was David Veikune being wrapped and tackled if I was reading my numbers correctly.

  102. Stretch November 3, 2008 11:42 am

I wish the team was not favored to win this or any future games.

  103. djmitcho November 3, 2008 11:44 am

    Stretch,
Its gonna be hard not to be favored to win the WSU game. They can’t find the endzone at all.

  104. Kazz November 3, 2008 11:48 am

    Kaimuki Kid,

The word on da street is that football players (in general) prefer other shoes.

  105. Aloha Joe the Plumber November 3, 2008 11:49 am

I’m so excited. I say, like Florida Ted has repeatedly said over and over, Alexander the Great for the remainder of the season. With the bang up job he did for UH against Utah, I say leave him in. Do not play Funaki any more. Let Funaki play on the D Line or the O Line or make him a running back. According to so many experts that comment here frequently, the D Line or some other position is better suited to Funaki and his lack of talent as a QB – this despite the fact Funaki as QB led UH to a victory over Fresno in Fresno and Alexander the Great led the UH to its worse loss in program history last week against Utah.

While we’re at it, I say leave things as they are. Keep the community college coaches in place, leave Mac alone, and keep playing the outstanding O Line and Receivers that are already in place.

Too bad its a bit to late for Funaki to transfer to another program. At least at Utah or BYU he would have had a fair chance at success.

Go Warriors! You guys are intimidating, with all of your garb and accessories. The Under Armor garb you are all wearing has apparently helped you all alot. Style over substance, huh?

I’ll wait for next year’s team to see if the UH administration has finally gotten it. If not, UH’s administration should talk to the head coaches at USC, Stanford, Oregon, Arizona, etc., about how and who to recruit, and about playing the best players, not the players you like the most because they remind you of you.

  106. d1島 November 3, 2008 11:51 am

    KaimukiKid,

The issue at the time was regarding the UA shoes and the amount of lateral support they give versus another brand. This was mostly in the case of the big boys (OL/DL). BarryM’s, Bulla’s and my son all found the UA kinda lacking.
Didn’t really notice the TTU OL on Saturday but noted that Crabtree sure was having no problems with making some pretty crazy cuts in his UA shoes. Nothing wrong with those ankles! (Maybe check the Texas DB’s though, they might have some “broken” ones after Saturday 😉 )

  107. d1島 November 3, 2008 11:56 am

    Aloha Joe the Plumber,

Glad you’re so excited. Maybe we’ll see you at Bay View on Saturday! 😀

  108. Sledge696 November 3, 2008 12:01 pm

Eh Stretch, I know that you are a devout fan but lets be realistic here.
Do you really think that they will go to the Bowl game? Sure right now they have a chance as they must win the rest of the season games.
You’re grasping at “what ifs”. Come on! The toughest game will be their last one with Cincinnati.

  112. Justin November 3, 2008 12:09 pm

Will Mouton be making the switch back to defense, he better. I am seriously starting to question mack as you do not move your best defensive player to offense.

  113. Stretch November 3, 2008 12:09 pm

UH needs to win 3 of the remaining 4 games. They have good opportunities to win NMSU, WSU and Idaho. That’s why it was important for them to have won this past weekend. It is known that Cincinatti is going to be a tough game, but if the team can take care of business before that game, we should already be in.

  120. LizKauai [Believer] November 3, 2008 12:17 pm

    whoosh

Re #105- Funake is a great 2nd QB. He plays “rescue” very well and we need him to be standing behind Alex. I think Alex appreciates that too and can relax and have fun with Inoke waiting in the wings. I don’t know if any other QB is ready to pop into that slot if Inoke is not available.

We need a “wartime consiglieri” now – to borrow some concepts from my favorite movie. And the Warriors need to “go to the mattresses” from now til the end of the season. When we get to the bowl game and win, they can “leave the gun and take the cannolis”.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Whoosh!

I live in Spokane, about an hour and a half away from pullman, where WSU is located. Trust me, UH will beat the cougs. If you thought TTech getting a kicker from the student body was bad (not a bad move by the way), they had to have open tryouts to find a backup/scout team quarterback.

I agree with ST, some day when they have the playoff they’ll wonder why they didn’t do it earlier. Heck, a 16 team tournament makes for 15 games vs the current “series” of only 5 games. It’d be HUGE.

Deepest sympathy to Barrack Obama, Jr. and his entire family for the loss of his maternal Grandmother.

Especially significant to me and all the other residents of Atherton YMCA at our time on campus as Barrack Obama, his Dad, was a dorm mate with us. Also, met his Mom on several occasions when she came to A-House before they were married. Barrack senior was an intelligent person who had who was gifted with wit and humor. Had us roaring early in the mornings. His only competition was Dwight Heine from Micronesia. When both were “on-stage”, we would laugh so loud that other residents came down to tell us “shut up”.

  148. Ronnie November 3, 2008 1:41 pm

    Sledge696/d1 –

I agree with you guys about the ha’a.

I noticed the game after someone brought it to Coach Mack’s attention that most of the players did it. Remember how we all had to dance hula, do the haka, or learn the poi balls for May Day? We didn’t have to be Hawaiian, just learn to celebrate the culture.

  149. Rob25 November 3, 2008 1:42 pm

    Sledge696

I didn’t get to see the Nevada game as I was on the mainland and didn’t see them do the ha’a at the LaTech game. At the Fresno game, they were in a circle and most of the team was doing it. My understanding was that Mack was going to have most of them doing it, although he probably can’t force them. I find it hard to believe that only 11-13 players were doing the ha’a. You sure?

Yes, I am a true and devout fan. That doesn’t mean that I don’t see the faults, but you don’t give up on your family when they struggle and this is my football family. No giving up on them now. Won’t be here for the Hawaii Bowl so I won’t have to feel the pain if they don’t make it.

You should come to one of our remaining tailgates and meet some of the Tsaikos in person. It’s always fun!

  150. Kazz November 3, 2008 1:42 pm

Most of the team was doing the ha’a at the Fresno game. There were probably about 10 that weren’t. I will have to look at my pics from the game.

The basketball team had their struggles against UH-Hilo last night and it looks as if Coach Nash is trying to find his starters and with Roderick Flemmings away taking care of family business it will be a while before this happens.

Petras Balocka looks like he’ll be a fan favorite and Leroy Lutu looked awesome and VERY promising.

Bill Amis will need to be the leader of this team.

  154. Kazz November 3, 2008 1:51 pm

    Yo Chawan,

I saw you and your peeps at the game last night. Me and my friends were sitting in the second row right behind the UH bench.

It was funny to see Paul Campbell’s facial reactions to some of the UH-Hilo players.

I hope Kareem Nitoto is ok, he looked like he got the wind knocked out of him at the end.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Balocka and Lutu this season. Flemmings too, but in Balocka’s case he can be that inside presence we missed last season and Lutu just looks like he can be a terror on defense.

  166. Jason November 3, 2008 2:43 pm

Awesome, I just checked the schedule. Only one Sunday/Wednesday game. I should be at all the other games.

  167. Jason November 3, 2008 2:47 pm

And my condolences to the Dunham/Obama ‘ohana and their friends.

Since we’re talking basketball — too bad for Anthony Carter, looks like he’ll be coming off the bench now for Denver, with the Nuggets trading for Chauncey Billups.

  168. Play the game November 3, 2008 2:52 pm

    Sledge696,

Pure luck? Would you rather just have the team flip a coin to determine the winner.

As I player, I always was taught the the game is won or lost on the field. You can be the worse team out there but you bust your butt and play the hardest you can until that final whistle blows.

Take advantage of opportunities. Teams make mistakes, individuals make mistakes, no one is perfect.

Someone slips, a ball is fumbled, a pass is tipped, an assignment is missed, is this luck for someone else? A referee makes a bad judgment call, is this luck for the other team? Call it what you may but it’s just an opportunity to take advantage of.

There’s still 4 games left in the season. Winning at least 3 out of the 4 is due to luck? In my opinion it is not luck. It will take hard work and determination. Execution and minimizing mistakes are key factors.

The team realizes where they stand. Are they going to wish for luck? Hell no! They set their own destiny. They know what’s at stake. They know what it takes.

    Go Warriors!

    Go Governors!!!!!!!

  171. Rob25 November 3, 2008 3:02 pm

Thank you for that “Play The Game!”

  172. djmitcho November 3, 2008 3:04 pm

I went back and looked at the video I took while at the Boise game and it looks like there were 3 or 4 players not participating in the ha’a. They were just kneeling behind the rest of the players.

  173. ryan November 3, 2008 3:06 pm

I like coach Mac but why does it always sound like he blames all the problems on the players but not on the coaching. I’m surprised what he said in the WAC teleconference about the QB’s this year.

That new weight room facility is going to pay big dividends.

Hi Liz! I’ll probably miss the 1st Q of the game, but should be able to watch the rest, since I’m leaving a little early. Daughter wants to get home early to work on a school project. 😉

  177. jm2375 November 3, 2008 3:27 pm

    GO REDSKINS!

    GO WARRIORS!!

  178. kama krab November 3, 2008 3:27 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

You no what I just have one thing to say. The coaches can coach up the kids all they want, but when it comes down to it the players have to execute. Plain and simple. There no if, and’s, or but’s about it.

So I say this, strap it up, hit somebody upside there heads, and look for blood. That is only way it’s going to happen. Dig deep and find that something that pisses you off and channel it when your on the field.

It’s do or die. To the boys you rather do or die.

  179. whitey November 3, 2008 3:27 pm

Team chemistry is not one of the strong points of this year’s team and was hoping that the seniors would pick up the slack and help the team be a team. At the beginning of the season I said ” are we as fans and the coaches watching the same game?” Apparently not, because that crucial penalty was obivious to the fans, but the coaches passed on it. Not to stir any problems, but the suggestion of Rolo upstairs and RL down on the field is starting to make sense expecially if RL cannot see what is happening from upstairs. That penalty is not only UH’s fault, but the zebras made a major error. They should have stopped and reviewed the play. One major noticeable things about the zebras at UH games is that they are not in very good condition, so they are out of position on a lot of plays.

  180. Ronnie November 3, 2008 3:27 pm

Chawan_cut – why doesn’t Coach Ken write up his game previews/reviews anymore?

  181. whitey November 3, 2008 3:31 pm

Didn’t the zebras stop play to check where to spot the ball at Boise and UH ended up with a 4th down instead of a 1st?

  182. GuysInOffice November 3, 2008 3:38 pm

    Yo St,
Can we request to have the Utah State clock keeper for our home games; it would surely help us on deadline. Utah State game lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes — thanks to the “running clock.” It was the fastest game of the season by 7 minutes, and beat two others by 24 minutes. Well, ’nuff said on this.

  183. whitey November 3, 2008 3:40 pm

I expect the warriors to play like warriors this saturday and wish Coach Mc the best. I don’t know how close or open this game will be, but will know if this team can finish the season with “PRIDE”.

  184. takoboy November 3, 2008 3:44 pm

interesting sen. obama on da 1420 broadcast going on now, caught the end but think he’d push 8team playoff for college football.

  185. Rob25 November 3, 2008 3:44 pm

    Whitey

I was thinking the same thing about the refs being out of shape. And it seems like we consistently get the oldest looking ones. The refs looked totally gassed as did our team.

That “fumble” or incomplete forward pass, as I and many others saw, should have been challenged and at the very least reviewed by the booth. That seemed like a game changing moment. Midori and I both said as much on Saturday.

  186. Ralph November 3, 2008 3:56 pm

99 club and Kaimuki kid….it’s not the under armour equipement-shoes, etc…earlier some of our bloggers mentioned the shoes didn’t feel as comfortable as their new balance and Nike shoes but that’s personal choice and how it feels…Texas Tech and South Carolina are two teams using UA without slipping and sliding around, they have big man with big feet and they are doing well.

  187. g-nalo November 3, 2008 3:57 pm

    ah’lo Tsaiko’s!

we still have a shot at the Hawaii Bowl and its important we get in, there’s a larger picture involved for the program (mostly money). if we already knew we didn’t qualify i’d agree with ‘playing for next year’, but thats not the case now.

don’t have a problem with other opinions…..just wanted to express mine. 🙂

  188. whitey November 3, 2008 3:58 pm

Rob25, i didn’t want to say anything about the age of the zebras, but they looked older than me, but I’ll put money that they are younger. hahaha. actually, the zebras we have been getting should have been eaten by the lions or sent to the glue factory. i am sure there are many more young zebras who more than qualify to be a WAC official, but benson state u wants to protect his interest.

  189. LizKauai [Believer] November 3, 2008 4:07 pm

    Skins are playing tough!!!

    whoosh!

  190. LizKauai [Believer] November 3, 2008 4:10 pm

Warriors need to play like the ‘Skins. Possession, march, put points up. 2 FG’s in two possessions.

  191. takoboy November 3, 2008 4:17 pm

actually skins having trouble on o as well in scoring area, left pts on the board in my opinion. two drives started in pitt territory at 30 and 35 and only 2 fg’s. no first downs. skins need to pick it up or they might regret their opening 2 possessions.

  192. LizKauai [Believer] November 3, 2008 4:28 pm

Point is- make the best of it.
Steelers are arguably one of the best dees right now. It does not prevent the Skins from scoring something.
    First punt.

    Play the Game,
That…was a very, very inspiring piece. The whole UH Football Team and Coaching Staff should get a chance to read it. Better yet, if you can have someone recite it to them with all the emotion, enthusiasm and energy, They may just take it to heart and play their guts out.

Hey Everyone! Check out Blog #168. A good piece from “Play the Game” Well done. OOOOORah!!!

  199. RedZone November 3, 2008 4:52 pm

DPK yes the Govs look good this year. They remind me of the teams they had in the 60’s. Real solid running attack and good defense. They have a real good linebacking corp. I really like Justin Vele who is only a sophomore.

Apelu reminds me of Nuu Faaola. I can see him wearing number 30 at UH.

    Back to Skins game.

  200. (Jesse) James November 3, 2008 4:56 pm

    My question to ST…

As I understand it, every play is reviewed by the replay official in college ball and the replay official can alert the head ref on the field that they want to review a play (like the possible forward pass vs. lateral on the 5). It would appear that on a critical call like that one, the refs should have reviewed it from the booth and made the call – either way.

I mean, they reviewed that TD from Alexander in the Nevada game to make sure it was a TD and that review was a booth review.

Just wondering what the ruling on that is?? I could be mistaken.

  201. BowsForever November 3, 2008 5:11 pm

Ok, maybe I’m not kidding. Campbell’s playing very shaky. Put in Colt!

  205. wafan November 3, 2008 5:35 pm

Interesting bit of trivia about the Washington Redskins and presidential elections.

Whenever the Redskins play on the weekend prior to the presidential election the incumbent party has won when the Redskins won. If the Redskins lost the opposing party won.

So, in this case, if the Redskins win tonight McCain would win. If the Redskins lost then Obama would win.

    Tough call on this one!

    Hawaii vs. NMSU

Expect to be in a Dogfight.

    Be prepared mentally.

    Focus mentally.

    Do it right.

Do it 100% (Give great effort on every play)

Giving great effort doesn’t mean acting like punks, pushing after the whistle blows, or making big body and bumping into the opponent in between plays. Giving great effort means giving 100% effort every play until the whistle blows and running back to the huddle. Do your talking from snap to whistle.

  212. BowsForever November 3, 2008 6:12 pm

Well, they’ll probably throw in Todd Collins next series if Campbell’s hurt.

  213. BowsForever November 3, 2008 6:21 pm

Is bringing the house on 3rd down always such a good idea? Second-stringer Leftwich is having his way with the Redskins D, 3rd and 10 or 3rd and 3, doesn’t matter. Oh well, 6-3 ain’t bad.

  214. Maverick November 3, 2008 6:31 pm

  216. madeinhawaii November 3, 2008 6:44 pm

Regarding the Ha’a. If only a small portion of the team is doing the Ha’a, that I think is indicative of the lack of strong leadership within the team, itself. It is not up to the coaches to urge, coerce any player to participate. It’s up to the player’s peers. There is the posibility of it fading to memory if this does not change.

  217. RedZone November 3, 2008 6:57 pm

  219. chawan_cut November 3, 2008 7:03 pm

    actually,
i don’t understand why these teams that are losing bad keep their starters in there. you would think give the 2nd stringers chance to get some playing time.
no wonder so many of them suffer when a “superstar” goes down. they panic. OH NO! they have no real game time experience!!!!

Just wondering if gloves makes it more slippery in catching the ball.

  227. A-House November 3, 2008 7:50 pm

    Ha’a:

I personally feel it is important for all players to participate in the Ha’a as it is a team effort.

Perhaps this is representative of what truly exists within the players circle – bunch of individuals who prefer to be individuals – surely gives the wrong impression of what the team chemistry is all about or not.

This can be said of any organization, but on a team with limited numbers it can say a lot.

Any one truly know why certain players chose not to participate and the coaches feeling on this? Hey, it may not be important to them as it may be to fans who want to see any evidence of “team unity”.

  228. Long Time UH Fan November 3, 2008 7:53 pm

Well there are four more games to be played and the Warriors need three more wins to be bowl eligible so there is still hope that they may make it. Remember the 2004 season when UH was 4-5 with three games left on their schedule and they came home badly beaten by Fresno State. They went on to beat Idaho, Northwestern and Michigan State to make it to the Hawaii Bowl where they beat UAB in a shoot out…

It’s not over until the fat lady sings….Keep Believing in the Warriors!

    Go Warriors!

If I recall, there were some players who chose not to perform the haka due to their religious beliefs. They thought that doing the haka is worshiping others gods which they do not believe in. It is their choice but it would be good for them to take a knee next to the group to show support and stick together. If they were to run off the field, that would be bad.

Washington should not be talking about last year because he is being given the chance this year and he is blowing it big time. Just do your job!!! Catch the ball, but this is probably why he saw limited play, poor hands.

a lot of the land grant schools started as A & M, but modernized it to State. the other schools with just the state name usually is has more professional programs like law, medicine, etc. so the farmers in these states usually sent their sons to the A & M schools to learn more about farming and send their daughters to the more prestigious schools where there were men of more wealth. while at iowa state, the ratio of men to women was 6:1 and the farm kids would say that the farmers sent their daughters to iowa and their ho__ to iowa state. i not insulting the women, but that was how it was in the 60’s.

Nasty loss by the Redskins. Funny about some of those dropped passes and ineffectiveness on short fields, it reminded me of a certain other team’s recent troubles. I really can’t understand why they let Campbell stay in the game when it was pretty much lost. He was getting thrown around like a rag doll out there. Throw in Collins, heck, give Colt a quarter’s worth of game time.

    whitey:

Interesting discussion of “land grant” schools/colleges.

UH was a land grant school and reason that all males had to take ROTC for 2 years. This ended when the “land grant” designation was removed and ROTC became optional in the early 70’s.

So, how come UH was the Rainbows? And, when did UH start with a “mascot”? Neva had one when I was on campus. Only Termite Palace and all that mud!!

  259. whitey November 3, 2008 9:33 pm

Any person who gives or receives, or offers to give or receive, or participates in the giving or receiving of money or gifts for the purpose of registering as a voter, voting, or voting for a particular candidate in any primary or election shall be guilty of a felony.

Business are free to offer ‘Election Day’ specials or sales for all of its customers but gifts, incentives or specials just for voters is prohibited under this provision.

Article about how Texas Tech could lose Mike Leach after this season. I didn’t realize that they didn’t give him a contract extension this past offseason and the AD is waiting until after the season. It sounds like an HF move, but at least Leach’s contract doesn’t expire until 2010.

Mike Leach has less job security than any other coach in the Big 12. That’s what you call dropping the ball. What were you thinking, Texas Tech?

Now the world has changed. Washington, Tennessee and Clemson will all be hiring new coaches, and Leach could be at the top of every list. Memo to Texas Tech: the price of doing business with Mike Leach just went up.

Maybe Texas Tech does have financial problems. Those problems are going to be a lot worse when they start trying to replace a brilliant coach.

  268. whitey November 3, 2008 9:45 pm

ok, back to fb. maybe should save the ha’a or haka for only special games like it was first intended. if the entire team does not participate, it loses it’s meaning. i think that the coaches or seniors can think of ways to fire up the team before the game. maybe this is an area where coach mc can give the younger coaches an opportunity to get the team ready.

  270. jm2375 November 3, 2008 9:46 pm

Waiit, what?? ROTC was mandatory at UH? Were some males excused? Don’t remember any mention of my dad having to do ROTC. I can’t see him doing it either, even though he played basketball in HS waaaaay back in the stone age. 😀

  271. Garret November 3, 2008 9:47 pm

NY Times article on how Texas Tech could lose Leach. I *really* don’t want him to go to Washington, because then he’d recruit west coast kids for his offense…and he’d probably go after a lot of the players that UH would want.

One reason for the concern is that Leach has just two years remaining on his contract, the shortest length of any coach in the Big 12. Leach has gone 73-37 in his nine years here, and with an 8-0 record this season, he has secured the program’s ninth consecutive bowl berth. Tech’s stadium is on the verge of being upgraded for the third time in his tenure, a testament to just how popular he has become.

Coaches with that kind of track record typically have at least a five-year contract cushion. For instance, the contract for Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops expires in 2013, and Mack Brown’s deal at Texas ends in 2016. Leach’s expires in 2010, which opposing coaches can use against him in recruiting.

“I don’t really second-guess it, certainly not during the season,” Leach said in a telephone interview this week. “I just roll on and see where it takes you and do the best you can and go from there.”

He is earning $1.75 million this year, meaning he is not among the five highest-paid coaches in the Big 12. While local news-media reports this summer blamed the athletic department’s poor financial situation for the lack of an extension, Gerald Myers, Texas Tech’s athletic director, said that was “not exactly right.”

  273. Kazz November 3, 2008 9:47 pm

From SportsHawaii who got this from Tombo Ahi’s UH Blog:

Greg McMackin’s quote on KITV news broadcast this evening.

We’re not in a platoon situation. Greg will start, he’s getting better and better. He’s running the run-and-shoot package. Inoke will play though, he brings something to the game, a quickness to the game. We’re not gonna platoon, but Inoke will play.

    Hmmm….

  274. Garret November 3, 2008 9:48 pm

Texas Tech’s AD decided to wait until the season is over…bad move, as the cost to sign him went up significantly after the Texas game and other schools will be coming around.

“We just made a decision to wait until the season is over,” Myers said. “I knew we had a chance to have a really great year and good team. Knowing agents, they’re just going to want to redo everything again. We want Mike to be our coach, and we’re going to do everything we can to make him our coach for a long time. We’ll just take care of that when the season’s over.”

Asked if he was disappointed about his contract situation, Leach said, “You always hope for the best you can get, but I try to focus on the task at hand and just leave all that stuff to the people that help me out that I hired to do it.”

  275. whitey November 3, 2008 9:49 pm

LTUH, when you going be in the city of lights?? going back in early dec, maybe see you there.

  276. d1島 November 3, 2008 9:51 pm

    Kazz,

Now they need to go back to spreading it out in the redzone again, too.

    Speaking of RedZone…
    got the answer yet?

  277. Garret November 3, 2008 9:51 pm

I’m impressed that Texas Tech’s graduation rate is far above UH’s and most other schools. He’s had success on the field, ran a clean program, had a very limited budget relative to his competition, and graduated his players. I really, really hope that he doesn’t go to Washington.

Along with Leach being an innovator on the field, few personalities in college football are as engaging as he is. He is one of the few major college coaches in any sport to have a law degree, and his intellectual fascinations range from South Boston gangsters to pirates. Of players who entered the Tech football program out of high school or transferred between 1998 and 2001, 79 percent graduated within six years — the highest percentage in the Big 12, according to the latest N.C.A.A. report.

Ashley Lelie is one of the players lobbying to get the Raiders to sign Michael Vick. He’s willing to put up his contract as collateral…

Raiders wide receiver Ashley Lelie said there’s only one place for Vick to go. He, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and Griffith said Vick would be content to back up Russell and fit in whichever way the Raiders deem best.

“You have to sign him, if you’re the Raiders,” Lelie said. “Trust me, I’ve played against him before. You don’t want him on the other team. I’ve seen what he can do.”

Lelie said it boggles the mind to imagine the wrinkles the Raiders could install in their offense with Russell, Vick and McFadden on the field at the same time.

Lelie, Griffith and Hall once called Vick a teammate. They still consider him a close friend.

To a man, they say, they are so convinced of Vick’s character, work ethic, dedication and repentance over his transgression that they would put up their lucrative contracts as collateral in case Vick ran afoul of the law again, were the Raiders to sign him.

    SteveM,

I’m ready to give up posting stuff to the blog…it is too crazy and slow tonight. One last article–I didn’t realize that Florida called 2 timeouts late in the Georgia game. There sure is some bad blood between those schools!

Florida never whipped out any stunts or grandiose celebrations to retaliate against Georgia for its end zone celebration last season. But coach Urban Meyer did raise a few eyebrows with a couple of timeouts in the game’s final minute even though the Gators led by 39 points at the time.

After third-string tailback Emmanuel Moody carried the ball for 14 yards, Meyer signaled for a timeout with 44 seconds remaining. Another 17-yard carry by Moody and Meyer called the third and final timeout with 30 seconds to go.

  338. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 4, 2008 12:04 am

A quick post before going back to work – big day tomorrow – not just for the candidates.

DrDoc was doing well until sometime early Monday morning and is back in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing another round of surgery Monday around 12 noon to check on stuff – please don’t ask me what because I am not good at handling medical things involving blood.

Anyhow, I was finally allowed to see him around 8:45 this evening. He’s in good spirits, but he’s hooked up to all kinds of tubes and monitors although he is not peeing in a bag anymore.

Mahalo to Jack Flash for helping me with the garbage. Kailua has started curbside recycling, but I am going to wait until next Monday to begin since the stuff in the sack was unsorted. Based upon our usage, I figure that we’ll probably have a mixed recylcables bin filled up maybe once every couple of months while greenwaste definitely will be put out as often as allowed.

Jack is leaving on a trip for about ten days on Wednesday so he won’t be available to help out for about an hour after DD gets released from the hospital – day and time still not known. Is there someone available to help out? There’s stuff strewn all over the yard and carport which never got put away after the last T-Gate. Jim left them out to dry before putting them into storage later that Sunday, but that never happened. I don’t know what goes where so until he gets home, the stuff will have to remain right where it is. Once he gets back home, he can tell us where to put it.

QUESTIONS CONCERNING SATURDAY’S BAYVIEW EVENT: Is the buffet the only food available or can food be ordered off the menu? Is the karaoke going on during the game or afterwards? Ditto the golf stuff.

We have a memorial service and reception to attend at 10 am that morning so, depending upon DD’s stamina level, we won’t be arriving until close to noon. If he’s tired, then we’ll go directly home.

FYI: Although DD was not overweight, did not smoke, worked out regularly, was not diabetic, and ate animal protein very sparingly, yet he still got zapped. Interesting that the doctors all claim that if he had done or been any of these things, they would have caught the problem several years ago. Make one think, doesn’t it.

    Time to go to work.

  339. Kekoa November 4, 2008 12:34 am

Gee W/Doc, I never thought of that! Total Chaos! Run the Karaoke during the game on half the TV’s and then run outside during the commercials to the driving range and whack some balls off the tee real quick. First one back to their seat would win the prize only if they sang a song along the way. Hmmm…yeah, sounds good!

Oh…and Post #307 – third paragraph down sez:

A seperate menu is also available for both meal items and more exotic Pupu’s.

W/Doc…your brain needs a break! Rest & Relax while DD is in ICU.

Get better soon!!! Just take one step at a time.

  343. wafan November 4, 2008 4:39 am

    WDoc . . .

Cool your jets and take time for yourself. You cannot be Dr. Doc’s helper if you are not healthy and well yourself.

I do not know of another all men’s school in Hawai’i run by the Irish Christian Brothers — except for Damien.

St. Louis is run by the Jesuits. But is not co-ed.

What school did your husband attend?

  345. Garret November 4, 2008 5:59 am

    WassupDoc,

I am very, very sorry to hear about Dr. Doc’s situation. Things were seeming to be getting better, but at least he is in good spirits.

  346. d1島 November 4, 2008 6:12 am

    Great Morning All!

    wafan,

    From the SLS website:

Saint Louis is an independent Catholic Marianist School that gives students a strong college preparatory education emphasizing academics, service, faith and moral values.

  347. jm2375 November 4, 2008 6:14 am

wafan – he grew up in the DC area and then went to that school with a turtle for a mascot (UMd).

WassupDoc – give DrDoc my best wishes. If you don’t have any risk factors, they usually don’t check for things, even if Kaiser says it’s all about prevention. Let me know if I can be of help.

  348. d1島 November 4, 2008 6:19 am

    WassupDoc,

Renewed thoughts and prayers for DrDoc.

  349. d1島 November 4, 2008 6:25 am

Glad to read that Pilares and Leonard will be back in action against NaMaSU.

    Have a great day erryboddy.
    Remember to vote.

    HiHo…

  350. Stretch November 4, 2008 6:45 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Make sure everyone votes today, some very interesting issues. Choo-choo or no Choo-choo, that is the question.

  351. tommui November 4, 2008 6:57 am

CAPITOL/WDOC Both of you = take it easy and one step at a time.♠

  352. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 4, 2008 7:29 am

  353. djmitcho November 4, 2008 7:34 am

Good Morning Everybody!!! Eh, make sure you go vote, ok?
I like being able to mail in my ballot. Makes it so much easier.

  354. djmitcho November 4, 2008 7:36 am

I have a hard decision to make for saturday. Watch my alma mater play it’s final game of the season or watch the UH game. Why they gotta be at the same time?

“hard decision”?? come on, there is NO question. DVR your alma mater game.

  356. jm2375 November 4, 2008 7:51 am

Good Morning ST, Stretch, dj, and all Tsai-kos!

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! and then go to Starbucks and get your free cup of java. 😀

  357. Bulla November 4, 2008 7:54 am

good morning to one and all,

first and foremost, WD & DD, you are both in my prayers, one day at a time, we all have more time than money.

next, VOTE TODAY!!! do your thing and get out there and get some exercise, that’s right, exercise your right to vote. it enables you to have an opinion in an otherwise dreary existence, you can sit around the table and complain about the potilitical system, lack of quality candidates, and just an overbearing sense of frustration….BUT ONLY IF YOU VOTE. it is your license to complain….haha

BEAT NAMASU… sounds like an anti oriental slogan, being both japanese and chinese, and part pekinese, i have to fix that…

BEAT NMSU, now there, that is better.

WARRIORS BATTLE TIL THE VERY LAST SECOND, nothing more and nothing less. If you can walk after the game, you could have tried harder. They should have to be filling each and everyone of you with electrolytes after the game as a direct result of your efforts on the field.

YOU WILL WIN IF YOU HAVE THE WILL TO WIN

  358. djmitcho November 4, 2008 8:02 am

    stretch,
easier said than done. first of all, I’m sitll in the stone age…I don’t own a dvr. if I really need to record something, I use a VCR!. Second, unless my alma mater is playing in the d3 championship game, they are never gonna be on tv, unless its the news. 3rd, it’s always good to show face around the old campus every now and then.

  359. Buffoman November 4, 2008 8:14 am

Did I miss something with regard to injured players playing? So, is Blaze playing or is he going to sit this season out?

Regarding the posts speaking to Inoki in the slot, a fifth receiver in a 5 wide package; does this mean that those making these posts now believe that the o-line problems are fixed and the q-back will have the time he needs to go through all of the reads to make the proper throw? Or, should we start thinking about getting a “Mauia type” back in the backfield to shore up the blocking such that the q-back can make some of the necessary reads on easier basic patterns such that going down the field means passing and not “running for your life because the defense is pouring in”?

  360. Kekoa November 4, 2008 8:18 am

  363. Kekoa November 4, 2008 8:38 am

ST ~ E kala mai!…I didn’t mean for you personally to bring Wena and family over. Just remind her before you fly off to America to cover the game.

  368. BillB November 4, 2008 9:08 am

Have been quite for awhile. Got a couple of opinions.

    1) Defense wins “Championships”, how can Mac a defensive coach forget this? Please leave Mouton on “D”, he needs to shut down NMSU’s 1st Team All WAC receiver, at least make their 1st option difficult. His impact to the offense is manini when compared to him not being on “D”, it’s like a grape to a watermelon.

    2) Stop the musical chair quaterbacking. It’s really hard to get in rhythm playing any time of sport if you can’t get the feel & timing down. If there is a big screw up, then make the change.

    3) Other than Estes & Tuoti-Mariner, we gotta have some “O” linemen that got quick feet, with a brain that works.

    That’s it, GO WARRIORS!

  369. koakane iPhone November 4, 2008 9:12 am

lope is da no believe guys

    kope is still sooooo onooooo

  370. al November 4, 2008 9:27 am

    kekoa,

whew, what a challenge with your lovely invitation. the Wildcats of Weber will be playing at 12 noon HST on Saturday against Idaho State. current travel plans show us here in honolulu, so that means we will be watching them secure their first outright Big Sky Conference title. they do have a bye next week, and then close out the regular season on the 22nd, and then it is the playoffs.

i’ll keep following with updates as the week goes forward.

    let’s VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE

  372. d1島 November 4, 2008 9:51 am
