Junior Day; Warrior Bowl recap

This morning, the Warriors hosted about 90 high school juniors (who happen to be football prospects).

The players and their parents toured the UH campus and facilities; met with coaches, academic advisers and counselors; and participated in a Q&A session on college life. Because this was considered a mass unofficial visit, parents and prospects must pay for their own refreshments.

Cool to see AD Jim Donovan’s son take the tour, accompanied by his mom, Kinda Shy.

Good Morning ST Did they run any punt or kickoff plays?

  2. pakegolf April 16, 2011 7:58 am

Hopefully Moniz and the receivers will gel during the off-season.

Way to go defense! Now we need the offense to start gellin and it’ll be another awesome year.

    Go Warriors!

  4. Stephen Tsai April 16, 2011 8:00 am

Yep, ran kickoffs and punts. We don’t have accurate stats on those returns (mostly because of the two big speakers blocking the view).

  5. Stephen Tsai April 16, 2011 8:01 am

Had a pretty nice turnout. Not sure what the stands hold, but it appeared filled. And there were a lot of folks watching from the parking structure.

I liked the Friday Night Lights feel to yesterday’s Warrior Bowl.

The band was there, and then the band disappeared.

Mack said he would prefer the scrimmage return to Aloha Stadium (which wasn’t possible this year because of the renovations). But I liked the intimacy of the event.

    Good morning all!

  15. Slugger April 16, 2011 8:39 am

Kickoff & punt returns averaged about 12-15 yds. There were a few that weren’t returned, cuz they weren’t caught, but there was one for at least 20 yds. Forget who it was.

    Off to the market…

  16. d1shima April 16, 2011 8:39 am

    Kekoa,

Good idea. It is, after all, an NFL-equipped facility.

Looks like the scrimmage went well. Agree that Moniz needs to bring the gel to receivers during the summer work-outs. They should do fine.

Just how good will our O-line be? Lotsa promise there. How did they look last night?

  23. Kekoa April 16, 2011 8:48 am

Egg-zack-lee mon ami! If the facilities are good enuff for both of the Pro Bowl Squads, it’s purrfek for our Warriors!

I’ll take random photos, then try to ID the prospects. (OK, writing that just affirmed what a bad plan that is.)

  29. warriorsun April 16, 2011 9:30 am

    references to yesterday’s blog:

#218, true chun hit a low-line drive kick that barely cleared the cross bars. the reason i didnt mention it is bc the D didnt put up an all out rush and the kick at that distance was too low and blockable over the middle. every kicker makes adjustment for distance. the longer the distance, the more power required and the lower the trajectory. from that distance, both hadden and niro put the right combination of high-trajectory (to avoid blocks) and power in their kicks.

#224. re rbs. i did watch jackson and lister. i mentioned jackson had good hands as he caught several flares out of the backfield and gathered his catches flawlessly and turned upfield quickly @ full-steam. as far as blocking, read betw the lines. our D was in so fast after getting past our ol the rbs had little angle or time to pick it up. naturally more work and application by smith is expected. the sring bowl is for learning and adjustmnet. like moot court is for law students.

as i said, overall, warrior D owned our O. perimeter speed and secondary coverage, reaction and quickness to ball, was too much to handle on this nite. so, i looked for the positives on O. not to sugar coat, but to highlight potential.

IMO, our receivers positions r still up for grabs. with the exception of royce (too much valuable experience),

i wouldnt be touting 4 starters….not yet. there were projected-starting receivers i watched that didnt bring their A-game, so i didnt mention them. there were other factors in the mix too. we have deep talent and rolo and mouse have to follow their gut. im holding out untill i see chris gant–too many sources that saw him play in person tell me the same thing. the point being, to figure out what rolo and mouse see, not what we want. they make the decisions.

on the other side, aranda will not be sitting on his hands and will be drooling as he looks for more advantage to exploit his talent and speed. that is a mark of a great coach and the mantra of boise state. they always look to create mayhem and exploit.

tomey, too, has more work to do but has a better idea of primetime st candidates.

the scrimmage was planned and executed in a way that will leave much film for tomey to study and evaluate.

still i believe, this spring scrimmage was a great measuring stick for our coaching staff. no doubt, they will watch film, evaluate and go back to the drawing board and prepare a summer and camp blueprint for impprovement and further progress.

once spring is pau, s&c coach, tommy heffernan, emerges as the man-in-charge to fine tune individual athletes in the last training-cycle before camp commences in august.

we are in the second-leg of process with two remaining before we host colorado. lots of time and thanks to our spring bowl, lots of film to breakdown.

Our women’s golf team not doing well in the WAC Tournament but what’s new ?

Last season for Friday Night Lights and I will miss it even if it’s a little bit hokey .

Anyone wondering why our Wahine volleyball program has landed only one 2012 recruit and all the good stuff has committed ?

Nohara isn’t getting much support from WAC fans, Aggie fans or fellow students as the word spreads of her arrest.Aggie fans are fed up with the reputation that they have acquired as a school of thugs and an AD who supports them.

I’m scheduled for jury duty on Monday and I’m not happy about that.Last time I was excused because during the jury questioning the defense attorney asked me a trick question.

So, Mr. Last Call he says “Isn’t it true that my client is guilty until proven innocent.? I replied “Well,he got this far didn’t he” ?

Thank goodness for our baseball and softball teams.

  45. Michigan Warrior April 16, 2011 10:35 am

    Happy birthday, Wafan!

    Go, Wahine!

So, out of our RB’s, Jackson got the most touches in both rushes and passes caught. Lister had 4 rushes, followed by Rosehill (2), and Cadiz (1). Not too balanced if we’re trying to determine who makes the cut and who goes. However, according to the stats, the other three either had no passes thrown to them, or they didn’t catch what was thrown. My bigger question still remains… none of our RB’s were able to pick up the pressure by the defense. That is still priority one in our offense, or we won’t have the time to throw any passes anywhere. Were they just out of position? Too slow in recognizing and reacting to where the pressure was coming from? Throughout the scrimmage, I’d think coaching is still ongoing. While everyone else is paying attention to our QB-Receiver relationships, or the play of our DB’s or DL, I’m sure a blocking back is still key on our shopping list.

Don’t get me wrong… I’m ecstatic in knowing that our defense is on fire so early in the game. We just gotta find someone in our offensive backfield who will match that intensity and make the plays (not just by running) that our offense requires, on a more consistent basis. Giving up so many sacks will lead to injuries and turnovers, along with a sputtering offense that we’ve seen before.

Okay, pau. Not trying to be a pain in da “da kine”, but kinda hard when we not there to see what’s going on. Mahalo for all da reports.

the tackling was very good yesterday especially a hit by Marcus umu..im please with #18 mike sellers having a good scrimmage. Jackson looked good also Kawika ornelles and Darryl McBride were dominating on punt good speed. Darryl McBride had a good scrimmage with tackles and his play making ability. Art laurel had a good scrimmage as well the elephants are pretty good i would of like to see the 1 d against the 1 o to see how they would of faired up against each other instead of having a mismatch on the opposite side of the ball.I was please with Jordan monico as well. 59. warriorsun April 16, 2011 11:39 am

    #45, Michigan Warrior.

ur questions are legit and truth be told many answers you seek remain unanswered–to date.

to understand fully, one must first comtemplate the purpose of the Spring Bowl and many programs have varied approaches. but from what i see, i believe MAC & staff wanted to evaluate players for pt and rotation and in the case of our D, aranda was peeking to see what pieces fit for current packages and how much he can expand its potential. u can bet coach dave will be in his own world for the next several weeks until he reemerges from his computerized-cave to announce to MAC a new and deadly stealth D based on cracking the sound barrier. lol.

as i mentioned in previous posts idn believe this bowl was held for “bubble purposes”.

when coaches select their rotations and depth chart–elimination takes place by virtue of the depth chart selection process. coaches r looking for those that can explicitly help the team first, not those on the bubble.

as far as our rbs go, i think its safe to see we r capable w jackson and lister. rem, we havent seen iosefa, who was held out or some of the inbound hot-shot frosh due this summer. also, blocking is always a work-in-progress and coach smith maybe the best coach we have had to to teach it correctly (a former lineman should be good at pass blocking). he did a hell of a job last year. moreover, we can substitute blocking packages if it becomes a viral issue.

judging from the passes thrown to jackson, that speaks volumes. go with it. rolo wants more touches out of his backfield and wanted to see it applied with his best out front. that was a system test using his best equipment. we shall see in september.

the concer now, is not what we discovered as strengths or weaknesses in the spring bowl, but rather, where do we go from here. that is the basis of your questions….stay tuned. watch s&c coach heffernan closely, 7 on 7s starting in june and of course–camp!

  60. KapoleiWarrior April 16, 2011 11:39 am

I like Kekoa’s idea of having the game on the ceded lands. I was one of the local refs that got to call the game but I had to leave early to get back to my part time job in Ko Olina by 10pm. Plus I could walk to the game from my hale. Defense looked solid last night, but I’m still not sold on our Oline just yet, the QB’s were under way too much heat. But I do have faith, I think Gordy will work his magic with the big guys just like he did last year.

All quiet on the Western front. One more basketball scholarship to fill for next season. Maybe it’s an off day and let things settle down or Arnold and staff pondering who to offer next, Darnell Taylor or Anthony Odunsi. Might there be more changes among the existing roster? Who knows. There is still time in the late signing period. But, as of right now, here is the roster.

    2. Vander Joaquim – C Jr. 6’10”

    3. Bobby Miles – PG SO . 6’1″

    4. Trevor Wiseman – SF SO. 6’7″

    5. Josten Thomas – PF Jr. 6’7″

    6. Dominic Brumfield – SF Jr. 6’5″

    7. Gerry Blakes – PG or SG FR. 6’4″

    8. Ronnie Stevens – PF FR. 6’8″

    9. Dillon Biggs – SF FR. 6’7″

    10. DeShawn Mitchell – SG or SF Jr. 6’5″

    11. Hauns Brereton – SF Jr. 6’7″

    12. David Rozitis – C Jr. 7’0″

    13. OPEN

    14. Pii Minns – SG Jr. 6’3″ (walk-on)

    15. Jace Tavita – PG or SG Jr. 6’4″ (walk-on)

    16. Miah Ostrowski – PG (Sr. to be in basketball, on football scholarship, Jr. in football) 5’9″

There is height, youth, lots of athletic ability, and can jump out of the building. It’s looks to be a very good group if we can get a very good point guard to fill the roster. Improvement for next season are ball handling, faster tempo, better free throw shooting, and team chemistry. The ingrediments are there if they work hard in the off season. With the roster, Gib Arnold can field 3 full teams and can have great scrimmages. If anything, this team will not be tired. There are a lot of guys who can play minutes and play effectively. It also looks like there are a lot of guys who can play above the rim and can dunk easily. Already looking forward to the dunk contest on the first day of practice.

  87. Stretch April 16, 2011 5:15 pm

    • The Warriors will not have an on-field practice Monday. Instead, they will review videos of the Warrior Bowl in the morning and go over the scouting report for the season-opener against Colorado in the afternoon.

why does “Hawaii Bowl” come to mind?? Scouting is always important but over 4 months early?? They can do that during the summer. Why not get on the field and practice. I am sure some of the “bubble” guys would love one last chance to show their stuff.

Derek Inouchi said not to mention that there wouldn’t be an on-field practice Monday because it would upset his golf partner.

I thought about it for, oh, eight seconds.

And I figured: What the heck. Mention it.

I would like to mention that although Joey Cadiz had only one carry for 5 yards, he was the only running back with positive yards up the middle off the second string OL against the 1st string D. He also was a forceful blocker stopping a NG in his track freeing Cayman Shutter to roll out and pass. A subsequent play he did the same thing although Shutter was subsequently sacked by Art Laurel, Laurel came out of a stunt for the sack while Cadiz was blocking the D-lineman who came through the OL again. Coaches should really study their films when they make their choices.

This really pisses me off, and it should piss off everyone else who loves online poker. Attendees: Rasu Begasu ohana (John, Kathie, Elizabeth & Don), Addahknowjoe, BG & Betty, Cenn & Greg, Curt & Meg, d1shima & Juliet, Da Punchbowl Kid & Sweetie, HiFlyer, Iwonderwhytheyhateme, J & Aya, (J)James, Kekoa & Diana, Koakane, Mark Takai, Mei Ling, PowderPuff, Prideperiod, Rob 25, ST, SteveM, and Stretch.

    Tsaiko-Vegas #3 is going to be interesting… 🙂

  118. Michigan Warrior April 17, 2011 3:17 am

#101… AmazingNAmusing… That’s what I’m talking about! When it comes to certain positions, including our running backs, stats aren’t the only thing to look at. I want to know our RB’s can protect our QB, and not just whiff at blocks. Good that they can run and make things happen when needed, but we pass far more than we run, so we need that protection.

#87… Stretch… right on! I can understand coaches wanting to get one final look at certain plays, but losing and replacing 30 Warriors on this team from now through summer is huge. This is the best overall group I can recall, coming out of Spring Ball.

    ➡ D-1 makin’ things sound so mellow…

➡ Pride Period…’nuff sed! Awesome pipes!

➡ Audience participation provided so willingly by the Tsai-ko Tsingers.

➡ The Blogmeister was there in a ‘back-up’ role in case there was a special request for his signature songs. There was none…tsigh.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  177. kids shoes outlet April 26, 2011 3:25 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Site Photoshopped Image Killer can detect such kind of image forgery very well. It identifies the forgery by detecting repetitions in the digital bits that comprise the imageeven if those repetitions are too subtle for the eye to detect or damaged by image compressions like JPEG.

  239. burak May 5, 2011 3:07 am

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
