Joint mission

The Warriors will be represented in an annual goodwill trip to American Samoa.

The past few years, former UH head coach June Jones’ foundation has sponsored a mission in which former players and coaches delivered medical supplies and taught at football clinics.

UH did not send a coach last year. This year, Jones and UH head coach Norm Chow arranged for UH assistants Tony Tuioti and Daronte’ Jones to be part of the trip. While the coaches are not recruiting this trip, it does help maintain goodwill ties.

Jesse Sapolu, Maa Tanuvasa, Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, Melila Purcell III and Reno Mahe also are on the travel list.

The group leaves this afternoon and returns on Tuesday.

Chow said that two other UH assistants — Lewis Powell and Keith Uperesa — will be attending this weekend’s All-Poly Camp in Utah.

This is from the USC Web site:

Kickoff times and television plans have been set for four of USC’s first five football games of 2012.

USC’s Sept. 1 season opener against Hawaii in the Coliseum will kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be shown live on the FOX network.

Yes, Deuce watches are now available in Warrior.

Here are former Warriors Ryan Grice-Mullins and Robert Lan modeling the Deuce:

Too young to remember Robert Lan? Air Force oldtimers might remember. He had one of the greatest interception/fumble returns in UH football history.

Thanks to A-Joe for finding the video. A-Joe notes the action begins at the 4:29 mark: Lan touchdown.

It was spam, but I thought it was clever that a military person has a “sir name.”

    Great Morning All!

Whew! Thank goodness my trepidations when reading today’s entry title were unfounded….

  7. papajoe2 June 14, 2012 6:05 am

Is it possible to go to American Samoa this afternoon and return this evening. Any time for dinner?

  8. Slugger June 14, 2012 6:07 am

Are they really leaving this afternoon and returning this evening?

  9. Slugger June 14, 2012 6:08 am

    ppj2, 🙂

  10. A-joe June 14, 2012 6:11 am

I can’t wait to read someday how individuals are doing well in our communities and attributes their success to the very moments being shared by all of these coaches and former players today.

  11. BigHiloFan2 June 14, 2012 6:12 am

    Howzit Tsaikos.

    Possible, but not on Hawaiian.

They only have a couple of flights, to and fro, between Hawaii and American Samoa each week.

  14. LizKauai (iPad) June 14, 2012 6:14 am

    Hi RGM and Mr. lan!

  15. Haleakala June 14, 2012 6:15 am

They must have the ability to beam themselves to and from Samoa, like in Star Trek.

  16. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 6:15 am

And let us not forget Inoke Funaki’s joke:

What did the monster do after he ate Tonga? He was still hungry and wanted Samoa.

Thanks for the video link, A-Joe.

Such names from the past: Warren Jones, Joaquin Barnett, Mike Tresler …

    And Aloha Stadium rocking?

Those were the days, my friend . . .

  19. wafan June 14, 2012 6:36 am

AM and PM flights. Whew long day! At least can sleep on board.

  20. wafan June 14, 2012 6:36 am

    A-Joe . . .

    Thanks for the link!

  21. papajoe2 June 14, 2012 6:37 am

A-joe, I remember that touchdown, but I didn’t remember it was 95 yards. Thought it was around 65 yards. Also, I thought there was less time. Still had 3+ minutes left. Mahalo for the memories.

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid June 14, 2012 6:42 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Thanks Hawaiian. Great way to start the day!

  23. Shoko June 14, 2012 6:45 am

Who was #53 in that video. He was the playmaker.

  24. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 6:46 am

    Cute Samoa jokes! Lol.

  25. tommui June 14, 2012 6:46 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And thanks for the memories (Robert Lan).

  26. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 6:47 am

No I don’t remember Robert Lan, but I’ll take your word for it. He was that good, huh?

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid June 14, 2012 6:48 am

    For Ms Liz –

Family, Friends, Football, Food, Fun, Fishing, Fly Fishing and Fish Frying!

  28. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 6:49 am

I think that was Joaquin Barnett.

    That crowd was pretty amazing.

  29. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 6:51 am

After watching the video, I called Leahey.

    Blog host: Sell sushi?

    Leahey: What? Who’s selling sushi?

Blog host: That’s what you said on the two-point attempt after Robert Lan’s touchdown.

    Leahey: Ah, Robert Lan.

And then he heard the audio.

  30. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 6:52 am

You gotta luv those UH uniforms!

    They were the best.

    Bring ’em back…please.

  31. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 6:52 am

So who’s selling sushi, ST? Inquiring minds want to know!

  32. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 6:53 am

    Morning/afternoon, everyone!

Wow, das one sharp watch! Cannot wait to get one!

Maybe not directly recruiting, but still recruiting by just being there to help out. Gotta maintain those ties.

I remember reading about this play, and the game, about three weeks later… Was stationed in Korea and had to wait for da newspaper clippings to bring me news. Now, so many years later, seeing Aloha Stadium full and rocking… Wow! Time to fill da stadium to capacity again!

And for those that met him on our trip home last year… happy birthday to my second son, Freddie-boy! More than everyone else, he can’t wait to go back to Hawaii! He says it’s to be with his oldest sister and grandma, and go to the beach again. But I think it’s so he can see GmaHoney’s granddaughter! Hahaha!

    Have a great day, everyone!

  33. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 6:53 am

Ipu: My favorite unis of all time were the all-black ones during the JJ era.

  34. lava June 14, 2012 6:53 am

Saskatchewan could have used Colt yesterday. They got blown out 44-10 to BC. Despite more than 30 passing attempts, they managed less than 150 passings yards, which is more painful considering they ran for less than 100 yards. Former Warrior Veikune had two tackles for the losing team. Yurichuk had two tackles for the winners. He is not a former Warrior, but his name is cool.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 6:56 am

That was Leahey’s line about the quarterback having enough time he could sell sushi.

Leahey said it wasn’t one of his finer lines.

  36. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 6:57 am

    Ipu Man:

    You’re right. I didn’t think I’d miss those uniforms, but I do.

    Don’t miss that turf, tho.

  37. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 6:58 am

Who was UH quarterback on the 2 point try? Jones?

  38. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:00 am

    Yikes!

Now I know what everyone meant. I had written returns “this evening.”

Whoops. That’s code for returns “on Tuesday.”

    My bad.

    I’ll do up-downs now.

  39. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:01 am

    Warren Jones.

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid June 14, 2012 7:02 am

    Happy Birthday, Freddie-boy!

    lava –

    Bumbye dey learn.

  41. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 7:02 am

Mahalo A-Joe and ST for telling us Robert Lan’s place in UH all time great football.

    Good looking “kid”…

  42. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:03 am

I’m a little fuzzy on the order, but I think it went: Cherry, Tipton, Jones, Gabriel, Carter, Skinner, Freitas, Carey, Robinson, Rolovich, Chang, Rolovich, Chang, Brennan, Alexander, Moniz, Austin, Graves.

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid June 14, 2012 7:04 am

    Wes’side Warrior –

Are you and the birthday boy gonna watch the Force this weekend? Send pics if can!

  44. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:05 am

    Joaquin Barnett was a beast.

    On the field.

Off the field, he was one of the nicest guys.

  45. A-joe June 14, 2012 7:06 am

We were at that game. We could just feel how demoralizing the entire stadium felt watching Air Force methodically move down the field against us. “Don’t let them get a first down!” screams turned to “just hold them to a field goal” thoughts. But even if AF were held to a field goal, Hawaii’s offense wasn’t on fire at all that night. Everyone in that stadium expected the worse.

I have to say, at the very point Lan and his entourage began to run, that was absolutely THE biggest WTF moment I have ever experienced with 43000 shocked UH fans!

    Hoping for miracle.

    Didn’t expect the moment

    Totally loved the result!

    Fricken magical!!

  46. Haleakala June 14, 2012 7:10 am

Hoping for more of those miracle moments in the next few years!

  47. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:11 am

    A-Joe:

Those moments are precious and few.

Maybe that forced fumble at San Jose in 2007?

Niko Noga’s block against West Virginia?

  48. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 7:13 am

I first began watching Warrior football when Robinson was the QB for JJ’s 1st year. I’ve been a fan ever since.

    That video was chicken skin!

  49. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:14 am

All those guys had pretty good stories, too.

    Mento and Psycho.

    Old-man Directo.

    Richard Spelman.

  50. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 7:18 am

Yes, Joaquin Barnett was a beast. Great memories from him.

Noticed also another great name in Hawaii football: “Directo”

  51. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:18 am

    Gigi:

Chicken skin was watching Garrett Gabriel beat BYU twice.

Or Michael Carter running the triple-option (even though he played with a broken rib).

Or Al Noga knocking out two players on one play.

Or the opening scene of the Coach Tomey Show when Nike Noga was shown running.

    Or Adam Leonard’s intro dance.

  52. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:19 am

    Dana Directo.

    Made up for lost time.

  53. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 7:20 am

ST: you have the memory of an elephant!

  54. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:21 am

They had some characters back in the day, like Colin Scotts.

I thought Mark Nua was the largest human being I’ve ever seen. And then one day I saw Shayne Kajioka. And a couple of years later, Kajioka lost about 50 pounds.

  55. el burro sabio June 14, 2012 7:21 am

That play was even more incredible because the defense could not advance fumbles, it had to be an intercepted fumble.

  56. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 7:21 am

ST: Is Chow going to allow the haka before the games?

  57. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:21 am

I think Gigi just called me an elephant

  58. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 7:23 am

Remember at the Tsaiko 2nd anniversary party at the SSC ~ ST, Jim Donovan, etc. doing the haka ~ chicken skin moment!

  59. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:24 am

They have been practicing the haka. Kamalani Alo is the leader. He’s using the haka that they used when he was at Kahuku. It was taught by a guy from New Zealand, I think.

And, it appears, the Warriors are walking onto the field to Bruddah Iz’s Hawaii ’78. (Great year, by the way.) Not sure if that will happen now that B.J. Penn has un-retired.

  60. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:25 am

    No. 58.

No, I have absolutely memory of that. lol.

  61. wafan June 14, 2012 7:27 am

    Happy birthday to Freddie-Boy!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  62. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:28 am

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but Gib’s daughter has set up a little stand in the Stan Sheriff Center during the basketball camps. She sells drinks and snacks. UH T-shirts also are for sale. (Very affordable.)

  63. Otto June 14, 2012 7:29 am

during wagner’s last year when they struggled there were 3 QB starting including hao and glover… that kind of led to his ouster? ‘Cuz they had a losing record and fans weren’t happy with who was starting? Didn’t niumatalolo start a game or two? I thought blaine gaison started one game too? Don’t forget funaki, he started one or two games.

Before Cherry it was Kaloi then Duva.

  64. koakane June 14, 2012 7:29 am

morning 808 and another humid sizzler today so get cooler somewhere

was at the dat game and screaming my arse off when Lam recovered the fumble in mid air and raced to the north end zone accompanied by his mates. unbelievable …. memories

  65. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 7:30 am

ST: How could you not remember? Everybody – including JD – was watching you do the moves so they could copy. Lol.

  66. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:30 am

    Great moment in UH Football!

We were sitting in the EZ watching AFA driving toward us. A-joe is right, very demoralizing and then….

    BAM!

  67. koakane June 14, 2012 7:31 am

just checking but is the blog clock off?

  68. A-joe June 14, 2012 7:32 am

Joaquin’s awesome warm personality came from being a man of God.

  69. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:32 am

….good ting taking off your helmet on the field wasn’t a penalty back then.

Mahalo to bgdaddylan for the memories!

  70. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:33 am

    koakane,

    No. You look slow….

    😉

  71. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 7:33 am

Wow, thanks again A-Joe. Feel so energized with that video. Full of hope

for next season. They should show that to the team, too, in case they are

behind in the USC game. Got chance.

  72. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:34 am

Fisher deBerry had a good run at AFA with the w-bone. He also had some gritty QB’s. McDowell was good, Dee Dowis was better.

  73. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:36 am

But all those Zoomies are to be respected and thanked for their commitment to serve us all.

    ….especially on this Flag Day!

  74. koakane June 14, 2012 7:36 am

d1 must be the big bang theory all over again.

  75. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:37 am

    Otto:

    Thanks much for the clarification.

I had forgotten about John Hao. I covered him in high school, so it was a big deal when he finally started. I remember a road game against Utah. It was really cold, but Hao did his best trying to pass. He would have been a good fit in the four-wide offense. I guess that’s what Saint Louis ran.

  76. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:38 am

Who was Air Force’s linebacker? I think his first name was Chad. I remember he was a big-time heckler at basketball games.

  77. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 7:38 am

What’s great about that video is that it starts off looking hopeless.

And then Bam! If it just showed the fumble interception, it would not

have been so dramatic. Good use of video direction to the poster.

Like in the movies when Indiana Jones is about to die, then bam!

    He gets out of it.

  78. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:39 am

OK, it was Chad Hennings. And he was a defensive tackle. But he also was a great heckler.

  79. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 7:40 am

UH shoulda used John Hao more. He reminded me so much of Joe Montana

in the way he soft passed effectively.

  80. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:44 am

Didn’t Hennings go on to play for the ‘boys?

  81. A-joe June 14, 2012 7:45 am

    72. Being we ran the wishbone in high school, I was a big fan of deBerry. We’d watch tapes of AF’s execution. They ran it flawlessly with surgical precision.

    73. Yes!!

    71. You’re welcome Ipu Man.

Everyone is expecting us to lose. We going beat SC!! I can feel it!!

  82. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:46 am

    d1

    Think so.

Made sense. They were America’s team.

  83. d1shima June 14, 2012 7:46 am

    koakane,

Like The Blog Host mentioned…. watch out! 😆

  84. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:50 am

    No. 77:

Cool thing about Indiana Jones is James Bond (Sean Connery) is his father.

In review, Luke Skywalker’s dad is Darth Vader, Indiana Jones’ dad is James Bond.

I see a smackdown against The Avengers.

  85. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:51 am

    We need a time machine:

    John Hao in JJ’s offense.

Bryant Moniz in Paul Johnson’s offense.

The Noga brothers in Thom Kaumeyer’s defense.

  86. DaveLetterMan June 14, 2012 7:53 am

Anyone remember who the linebacker was that leaped over the center at the snap and sacked the QB? I remember the stop-action picture in the Advertiser was amazing. The LB was parallel to the ground right before he hit the QB.

  87. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 7:54 am

The other day, I wrote my blog at 11:30 p.m. and wanted to post it at 12:01 a.m. I waited and waited and waited. It was 12:28 a.m. when the blog clock showed 12:01.

  88. Buffoman June 14, 2012 7:56 am

Speaking of large. I remember going into the stadium after a few (okay, quite a few) green bottles and settling in to watch Nebraska play UH. When Dave Remington walked onto the field I about regurgitated all those beers. That was one large individual in what was a uniform that was probably two sizes too small.

I also remember UH playing the Huskers to a near stand still with unbelievable defense.

That being said, if our defense this year measures up to that years defense, we’ll play USC to a surprise result. We would probably not win (hoping I’m wrong) but it’ll let folks know that UH’s defense has returned to where folks know that they were in a game.

  89. DaveLetterMan June 14, 2012 7:56 am

The Noga brothers in every UH defense.

  90. Annoddah Dave June 14, 2012 8:01 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Tenks for the link A-Joe. I was there and it was a surreal moment in UH sports history. Every Rainbow fan went home happy! It looked very bad up until that fumble and run. I hope something like that happens this season.

  91. Buffoman June 14, 2012 8:04 am

Dave, I believe that was Mr. Noga (Niko) flying over the line to remove the New Mexico QB from the game. I believe the QB left after the hit or soon after. Heck the Noga brothers were relentless. I Hope there’s a second coming of such players. The other who almost always goes unmentioned was Taase Faumui. That guy was a beast of a player.

  92. dihudfan June 14, 2012 8:06 am

thanks A-Joe… what a way to start my day!!!

  93. jm2375 June 14, 2012 8:15 am

    Good morning Tsaikos! Happy Thursday.

Safe travels to the coaches and former players. Hope we find some recruits!

ST – are they ever gonna fix the blog clock or are they gonna wait till it breaks?

  94. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 8:17 am

DPK… The Force are on the road this week, playing at the Chicago Rush. Their next home game is on July 1st. Final home game is on July 14th. They then close out the regular season in New Orleans, to try to avenge their earlier loss to the VooDoos.

Will definitely try to take more action shots than the last time. Hope our boyz will be in the game(s).

One of my all-time heroes… Michael Carter playing all buss-up, (visibly hurting), and still going back in to run that option, knowing he going get hit again! Back then, that’s how we saw UH football… tough buggahs that just kept going, kept hitting, on both sides of da ball… until pau… no matter what.

  95. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 8:19 am

I remember when the stadium was only a year or two old (new)… all the stomping would shake da whole place. I used to wonder if we was going broke da place, and how many folks was going get hurt! Hahaha! Dat was rockin’!!!

  96. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:20 am

Back then, my job was to edit in the office until the middle of the third quarter. Then I’d drive to the stadium and get quotes for Ferd. So I get there, there’s all this gloom and doom, and then all of a sudden everyone is cheering like crazy. And I’m thinking, what the heck just happened?

By the way, back then we didn’t have cell phones.

Or computers that showed more than eight lines.

  97. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:21 am

    Jm:

I think they think they have “time” to fix the clock.

  98. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:22 am

    Wes’side:

It would be nice if teams had nicknames that were definitely singular or plural.

    For example, Heat vs. Thunder.

Our policy at work is to pluralize all team nicknames. I argued that Wolf Pack should be singular (collective noun) because if you were talking about a real pack of wolves, it would be singular. Alas, no.

On the other hand, I think “Ferd” can be pluralized.

  99. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 8:22 am

ST: that was back in the cave age. Hard to believe you are only 51.

  100. Na Koa Mike June 14, 2012 8:24 am

  102. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:26 am

The Aloha Beer fund-raiser is a great cause.

Of course, organizers do know that Chow does not drink alcohol, right?

  103. DaveLetterMan June 14, 2012 8:27 am

    Thanks Buffoman.

    Morning to all the Tsaikos!

  104. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 8:27 am

I hear you, ST. After typing “VooDoos”, I kinda wondered about my pluralizing that word/name. I should’ve just left it as “VooDoo” as I had originally intended. Oh well, there it is for all to see. No take-backs.

    What say you, Ferds?

  105. jm2375 June 14, 2012 8:30 am

ST – #98 – the weirdest one is Stanford Cardinal. Only one? Shouldn’t there be more than one? And how did the tree get in there?

I like those white pants with the rainbow stripes. Just change the jerseys to the darker green they’re using now.

  106. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:31 am

The one I have the most problem with is the Stanford Cardinal.

    Is “red” plural?

And before Stanford, did anybody know that “cardinal” was a shade of red?

  107. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:32 am

    Oooh. Eerie.

Jm and I thought the same thing.

    (Cue the “Twilight Zone” music.)

  108. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:33 am

    Jinx, jinx, master jinx . . .

  109. A-joe June 14, 2012 8:33 am

ST- What’s “Barney Rubble” doing now days? Last time I saw him was in Hawaii Kai Costco well over a decade ago pushing an orange dolly with those MASSIVE calves.

  110. A-House June 14, 2012 8:36 am

Chad Hennings never served in the Air Force after graduation because the Dallas Cowboys and the Dept of Air Force reached an agreement that he would not be held to the 5 year commitment if he paid the estimated $250,000 for his education.

The Dallas Cowboys were more than happy to pay that amount as part of his contract.

  111. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 8:37 am

Got me wondering and thinking… so I went and looked up the Arena Football League teams.

    As shown on http://www.arenafootball.com/teams/

    National Conference – West Division:

    Arizona Rattlers

    San Jose SaberCats

    Spokane Shock

    Utah Blaze

    National Conference – Central Division:

    Chicago Rush

    Dallas Vigilantes

    Iowa Barnstormers

    Kansas City Command

    San Antonio Talons

    American Conference – South Division:

    Georgia Force

    Jacksonville Sharks

    New Orleans VooDoo

    Orlando Predators

    Tampa Bay Storm

    American Conference – East Division:

    Cleveland Gladiators

    Milwaukee Mustangs

    Philadelphia Soul

    Pittsburgh Power

Looks like pluralize at your own risk, or something.

  112. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:39 am

The word “jinx” might originate from a character, Jinks Hoodoo, played by Frank Daniels. Here’s an excerpt from a site on word origins:

Daniels was one of the leading comic actors of the day and Little Puck was very popular. Within a few years, the name Jinks Hoodoo was being applied to bearers of bad luck. From the Hawaiian Gazette, 19 March 1895:

When they heard of the ship’s escape the winners were glad and the losers declared that Mr. Ficke was a genuine “Jinks Hoodoo.”

  113. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:44 am

The only nicknames that make regional sense are Rattlers, Sharks, Storm and VooDoo.

It should be the Milwaukee Harleys or Hogs.

    Cleveland De-Brons

    Spokane Rain

  114. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:46 am

My favorite college name is Austin Peay (pronounced pee).

Or, when Fly Williams used to pay for them: “Fly’s open. Come watch Austin Peay.”

  115. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 8:46 am

    Cheers to The Hawaii Warrior!

    Go Rainbow!

Good Luck to the Fighting Irishes…

  116. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:47 am

    A-Joe:

Wow. Travis Sims. That’s a name out of the past. Isn’t he making oodles of money in construction.

They used to say: Looks like Barney, hits like Bam-Bam.

  117. Paco June 14, 2012 8:48 am

#106 – USC colors are “cardinal” and “gold”. Not red and yellow!

  118. macaroniandcheese June 14, 2012 8:48 am

@86…It was Alvis Satele, father of Brashton and Liko

  119. Ipu Man June 14, 2012 8:49 am

    Said it once before,

it should be the Milwaukee “Moo-Moos”…

(Get it? Cheese, milk, America’s Dairyland?)

  120. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:51 am

Speaking of Rainbow, who gets credit for the song, “Another Rainbow” — Baba B or Pomai Longakit?

I see two “official” versions on Youtube.

  121. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 8:52 am

    Interesting articles in today’s S-A:

Obituary for Helen Chapin, who was Hammerin Hank’s wife. Remember Hank? He used to be a frequent commenter here.

Whatever Happend to ~ Bob Nash? He said he is “enjoying life.”

    Morning Buzz

    By Scott Wolf on June 14, 2012 9:39 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | ShareThis

Some TV details are starting to trickle in this week. and a Fox source said the network will probably televise the Hawaii and Stanford games in prime time this season. ESPN and ABC will announce some games later today.

  125. (Jesse) James June 14, 2012 8:55 am

#116….Travis Sims. On the old SEGA game systems I would play Bill Walsh NCAA Football 92. That game contained the top 25 teams from that year and Hawaii was one of them. I would always play in a stadium and choose snow as the weather…then I would have Sims run for like 700 yards in one game….LOL

  126. Wes'side Warrior June 14, 2012 8:55 am

Wonder why Spokane chose “Shock” as their team name. Isn’t that the name of the WNBA team in Detroit?

Anyways, I remember Travis Sims coming up to our offices when I was a Buyer at “Eagles” (Eagle Hardware & Garden) at Waikele. Such a proper, young man. I know he was there to take care of business, but all we could talk about was UH football. Good thing he wasn’t there to meet with me. He would’ve wasted his whole visit and gotten nothing accomplished. I definitely loved his smash-mouth style of play too.

  127. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 8:59 am

Travis always wore shorts in Hawaii because he had difficult finding proper fitting pants because of his calves.

  128. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 9:00 am

Liz: does that mean we won’t have to deal with pay per view anymore?

  129. papajoe2 June 14, 2012 9:01 am

LizK, I hope they announce the UH/USC time. I need to make plans. Can you post it if you see it? I will be out most of the day. AMahalo.

  130. DaveLetterMan June 14, 2012 9:01 am

Thanks macaroniandcheese. Now we have two answers: Niko Noga and Alvis Satele.

ST, does the Advertiser have back issues that far back? Where can I find that photo?

  131. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 9:01 am

And to think, for a while, Sims was the backup running back.

    Jamal Farmer was that good.

  132. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 9:02 am

I think Anthony Woodson also made a flying tackle.

  133. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 9:05 am

More recently, Michael Malala made the flip-over tackle:

  134. Mrs. SB June 14, 2012 9:08 am

Sorry Col A-House @ 110 but Chad Henning was commissioned in the Air Force and did serve:

After graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1988, Hennings entered undergraduate pilot training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, as part of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) Program conducted by the 80th Flying Training Wing. The ENJJPT was considered an elite program, and when his ground training studies faltered (he had been an honor student at AFA), his squadron commander isolated him from all contact regarding the Dallas Cowboys, who had drafted him in April 1989. After UPT, Hennings completed Lead-In Fighter Training and because of his size, was eligible only for F-111, F-15 Eagle, or A-10 Thunderbolt II RTU. He became an A-10 pilot and was assigned to the 92d Tactical Fighter Squadron, a unit of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing based at RAF Bentwaters in the United Kingdom, in June 1990.

While with the 92d TFS, Hennings deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. From April to June 1991, and October 1991 to January 1992, based at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, Henning flew 45 A-10 missions in support of Operation Provide Comfort, an effort that helped provide relief and humanitarian aid to Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq. He was twice awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal, a humanitarian award and an Outstanding Unit Award for his actions in the service. He was promoted to captain on June 1, 1992.

[edit] National Football League careerBecause of his Air Force military commitment (originally 8 years), he dropped in the 1988 NFL Draft until the Cowboys took a chance and drafted him in the 11th round with no indication of an early out from the Air Force. After the 1991 Gulf War, the United States military underwent an across the board reduction in budget and Hennings was able to have the remaining four years of his active-duty commitment (service academy and rated pilot) waived, which was unprecedented at the time. He continued service in the Air Force Reserve for nine years as a liaison officer to the Air Force Academy after his separation from active duty, then went into the Individual Ready Reserve.

In 1992, he left the Air Force and joined the Dallas Cowboys as a 27-year-old rookie, quickly becoming a key reserve, on one of the best defensive line rotations in the NFL.

In 1996 he became a starter, replacing Russell Maryland who left via free agency to the Oakland Raiders.

  135. (Jesse) James June 14, 2012 9:09 am

A-Joe…Maybe you can find and post that video of Jamal Farmer with that long run against BYU when we finally beat them in the first “Payback in Paradise”…LOL

Yes you’re correct A-House, Chad did play for the Cowboys. However, not before he served his country first. Chad did two tours of duty in the Persian Gulf, before lacing up with the Cowboys. I’m not aware of any $250,000. transaction or agreement between the Air Force and the Cowboys organization.

Nobody knows where the archives are to Advertiser stories.

I do know that for the 2007 season, we made blowups of the front page of every UH game. We gave the blowups to UH media relations. I think they use the back as the white tester for videos.

Travis Simms ran “flat footed” which made his seem to waddle with his 4.5 speed.

The 99-yd run was called back because a WR clipped a DB who was well out of the play – Simms was aboout 10 yds past the DB.

    Who hit the QB?

Probably the official score is recorded from the point where he took possession of the ball, not the LOS. Similar to a interception taken back for a TD.

The linebackers around 1984 James Elias, Thad Jefferson, Alvis Satele, M.L. Johnson, Anthony Woodson and John Levingstion were awesome.

As ST mentioned, memorable play by Anthony Woodson who flew over a blocker to make the tackle. Also, Alvis Satele bulled a blocker into the quarterback for a sack.

Thad, ML and John were fun guys to be around.

Just checked with Her Highness CEO of the Kapolei Ceded Aunty Diane, she said you would be accepted as an official Kanaka Maoli after you build a Japanese garden in her backyard.

After acceptance as an official member of Kanaka Maoli organization, you can then start paddling to the City Of Refuge. I checked the archives that showed pictures of you building a garden at the lower campus of the University Of Hawaii. After consulting with several distinguished members of local OCHRA and Hui Wa’a canoe clubs. The consensus was that you indeed have the proper sized “guns” required to make the trek from Mokapu to the Kealakekua Bay by canoe.

There’s a huge difference between being overseas (or not home) and having only read about them, compared to actually being there, or at least catching it on tv. Aloha was definitely rockin’ back then! We gotta recapture that magic!

Each and every time I exit the H-3 tunnels and look across Kaneohe Bay, I wonder which royal person decided to make Mokapu Island (MCBH) a permanent “kapu” place by building fish ponds to keep the “commoners” out thus forever changing the “eco-structure” of Kaneohe Bay.

A study said it currently takes 5 years for the water to circle the bay.

Proposal: build a 100-yard wide canal through the bird sanctuary to restore the flow of sea water into the bay to rejuvinate K-Bay. Construct a concrete wall on either side with rocks for the “bed” to keep costs down and create a “natural” bottom for fish and other marine life.

Wonder what it would cost and how beneficial it will be to the future of Kaneohe Bay?

    Re: Warriors on Fox.

Is it the real deal FOX that we all get on KHON?

Or is it one of the FOX sports affiliates?

    BIK

  201. Bigislandkurt June 14, 2012 1:43 pm

The best thing about these old Rainbow Warrior clips is looking up into the madness that was the crowds in Aloha stadium.

By the way, now all the linemen are big like Mark Nua. Well, tall like Nua, at least.

KHON Channel 2 will show the University of Hawaii’s regular season football opener against Southern California as part of a national prime-time broadcast, a FOX Network spokesman in Los Angeles said.

Dan Bell of FOX said the Sept. 1 contest will be the “first ever regular season college football game in FOX history” to be shown nationally.

Kickoff in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Hawaii time, USC said.

It will be the first UH game shown on KHON since the 2008 Sugar Bowl.

Two UH games this season, the Sept. 28 contest at Brigham Young, and the Nov. 16 game at Air Force, will be shown on ESPN.

I believe that flying tackle by Anthony Woodson was against Utah. The quarterback lookup and just kinda crumpled to the ground.

Niko Noga was so quick he once reach through! the legs of the opposing center and ankle tackled the QB!

  207. d1shima June 14, 2012 3:26 pm

    Congratulations Cassy!

Here he is after a catching a pass from Colt and dragging a bunch of Utah State

    defenders about 25 yards…

James elbows thunder player in the groin for winning shot and then James

gets to walk to the free throw lane. Justice?

  220. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2012 5:58 pm

I think right now would be the right time for Jim Rome to pose the “fixed” question to David Stern.

  221. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 6:10 pm

Ipu: sour grapes? Lol. Hey, a win is a win is a win. Yay, Heat!

I definitely recall that Ivin Jaspar was the starting QB in the 1992 season opener victory against Oregon on the road….but that Michael Carter brought it home after Jaspar got dinged up.

Not sure but thought that Rodney Glover and Johnny Macon also started a few games at QB.

Kinda recall that Brandon Satcher even started a game for Warriors.

    Also Shawn Withy-Allen too.

  232. d1shima June 14, 2012 8:06 pm

    Nice seeing Slugger today. 🙂

Masa’s definitely has the CC potential covered as far as the fuud side goes but not too sure about the wala’au possibilities. That place gets busy!

  233. el burro sabio June 14, 2012 8:07 pm

Itai Sataua, the greatest 215 pound defensive lineman in UH history, dove over the lineman and sacked the CSU QB in the end zone. It was on the road so not many people saw it.

  234. bleedgreen June 14, 2012 8:30 pm

Fix in NBA? Fix in boxing? What else? Lance Armstrong cheated by using strength enhancing drugs? Who was that boxer that used some kind of hardening compound on his hand wraps to knock out his opponent? New Orleans Saints had a bounty system. So can we say they all cheat? Most of them cheat? Some of them cheat? Yet life goes on and the fans still pay the piper.

  235. kapakahi June 14, 2012 8:55 pm

Itai Sataua….had the distinction of starting at NG ahead of Niko Noga his true frosh season.

Went to Masa’s (Mapunapuna) often in the days I used to work at Fern Elem. Definitely a satisfying stop, but occasionally had a problem finding parking too.

On those days, Plan B was 99 Ranch food court.

According to RK, Rich Miano is the next Kaiser High School football coach.

  238. LizKauai (iPad) June 14, 2012 11:11 pm

All the best to Coach Miano.

  239. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 11:18 pm

Rich Miano graduated from Kaiser HS so he’s come full circle.

  240. gigi-hawaii June 14, 2012 11:19 pm

Hard to believe he didn’t receive more lucrative offers on the mainland.
