Joint mission
The Warriors will be represented in an annual goodwill trip to American Samoa.
The past few years, former UH head coach June Jones’ foundation has sponsored a mission in which former players and coaches delivered medical supplies and taught at football clinics.
UH did not send a coach last year. This year, Jones and UH head coach Norm Chow arranged for UH assistants Tony Tuioti and Daronte’ Jones to be part of the trip. While the coaches are not recruiting this trip, it does help maintain goodwill ties.
Jesse Sapolu, Maa Tanuvasa, Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, Melila Purcell III and Reno Mahe also are on the travel list.
The group leaves this afternoon and returns on Tuesday.

Chow said that two other UH assistants — Lewis Powell and Keith Uperesa — will be attending this weekend’s All-Poly Camp in Utah.

I remember reading about this play, and the game, about three weeks later… Was stationed in Korea and had to wait for da newspaper clippings to bring me news. Now, so many years later, seeing Aloha Stadium full and rocking… Wow! Time to fill da stadium to capacity again!
And for those that met him on our trip home last year… happy birthday to my second son, Freddie-boy! More than everyone else, he can’t wait to go back to Hawaii! He says it’s to be with his oldest sister and grandma, and go to the beach again. But I think it’s so he can see GmaHoney’s granddaughter! Hahaha!

Saskatchewan could have used Colt yesterday. They got blown out 44-10 to BC. Despite more than 30 passing attempts, they managed less than 150 passings yards, which is more painful considering they ran for less than 100 yards. Former Warrior Veikune had two tackles for the losing team. Yurichuk had two tackles for the winners. He is not a former Warrior, but his name is cool.
That was Leahey’s line about the quarterback having enough time he could sell sushi.
Leahey said it wasn’t one of his finer lines.

Joaquin Barnett was a beast.
On the field.
Off the field, he was one of the nicest guys.
We were at that game. We could just feel how demoralizing the entire stadium felt watching Air Force methodically move down the field against us. “Don’t let them get a first down!” screams turned to “just hold them to a field goal” thoughts. But even if AF were held to a field goal, Hawaii’s offense wasn’t on fire at all that night. Everyone in that stadium expected the worse.
I have to say, at the very point Lan and his entourage began to run, that was absolutely THE biggest WTF moment I have ever experienced with 43000 shocked UH fans!

I thought Mark Nua was the largest human being I’ve ever seen. And then one day I saw Shayne Kajioka. And a couple of years later, Kajioka lost about 50 pounds.
That play was even more incredible because the defense could not advance fumbles, it had to be an intercepted fumble.

They have been practicing the haka. Kamalani Alo is the leader. He’s using the haka that they used when he was at Kahuku. It was taught by a guy from New Zealand, I think.
And, it appears, the Warriors are walking onto the field to Bruddah Iz’s Hawaii ’78. (Great year, by the way.) Not sure if that will happen now that B.J. Penn has un-retired.

I had forgotten about John Hao. I covered him in high school, so it was a big deal when he finally started. I remember a road game against Utah. It was really cold, but Hao did his best trying to pass. He would have been a good fit in the four-wide offense. I guess that’s what Saint Louis ran.
Who was Air Force’s linebacker? I think his first name was Chad. I remember he was a big-time heckler at basketball games.
What’s great about that video is that it starts off looking hopeless.
And then Bam! If it just showed the fumble interception, it would not
have been so dramatic. Good use of video direction to the poster.

Anyone remember who the linebacker was that leaped over the center at the snap and sacked the QB? I remember the stop-action picture in the Advertiser was amazing. The LB was parallel to the ground right before he hit the QB.
The other day, I wrote my blog at 11:30 p.m. and wanted to post it at 12:01 a.m. I waited and waited and waited. It was 12:28 a.m. when the blog clock showed 12:01.
Speaking of large. I remember going into the stadium after a few (okay, quite a few) green bottles and settling in to watch Nebraska play UH. When Dave Remington walked onto the field I about regurgitated all those beers. That was one large individual in what was a uniform that was probably two sizes too small.
I also remember UH playing the Huskers to a near stand still with unbelievable defense.
That being said, if our defense this year measures up to that years defense, we’ll play USC to a surprise result. We would probably not win (hoping I’m wrong) but it’ll let folks know that UH’s defense has returned to where folks know that they were in a game.

Dave, I believe that was Mr. Noga (Niko) flying over the line to remove the New Mexico QB from the game. I believe the QB left after the hit or soon after. Heck the Noga brothers were relentless. I Hope there’s a second coming of such players. The other who almost always goes unmentioned was Taase Faumui. That guy was a beast of a player.

DPK… The Force are on the road this week, playing at the Chicago Rush. Their next home game is on July 1st. Final home game is on July 14th. They then close out the regular season in New Orleans, to try to avenge their earlier loss to the VooDoos.
Will definitely try to take more action shots than the last time. Hope our boyz will be in the game(s).
One of my all-time heroes… Michael Carter playing all buss-up, (visibly hurting), and still going back in to run that option, knowing he going get hit again! Back then, that’s how we saw UH football… tough buggahs that just kept going, kept hitting, on both sides of da ball… until pau… no matter what.
I remember when the stadium was only a year or two old (new)… all the stomping would shake da whole place. I used to wonder if we was going broke da place, and how many folks was going get hurt! Hahaha! Dat was rockin’!!!
Back then, my job was to edit in the office until the middle of the third quarter. Then I’d drive to the stadium and get quotes for Ferd. So I get there, there’s all this gloom and doom, and then all of a sudden everyone is cheering like crazy. And I’m thinking, what the heck just happened?
By the way, back then we didn’t have cell phones.

For example, Heat vs. Thunder.
Our policy at work is to pluralize all team nicknames. I argued that Wolf Pack should be singular (collective noun) because if you were talking about a real pack of wolves, it would be singular. Alas, no.
On the other hand, I think “Ferd” can be pluralized.

Chad Hennings never served in the Air Force after graduation because the Dallas Cowboys and the Dept of Air Force reached an agreement that he would not be held to the 5 year commitment if he paid the estimated $250,000 for his education.
The Dallas Cowboys were more than happy to pay that amount as part of his contract.

The word “jinx” might originate from a character, Jinks Hoodoo, played by Frank Daniels. Here’s an excerpt from a site on word origins:

Some TV details are starting to trickle in this week. and a Fox source said the network will probably televise the Hawaii and Stanford games in prime time this season. ESPN and ABC will announce some games later today.
#116….Travis Sims. On the old SEGA game systems I would play Bill Walsh NCAA Football 92. That game contained the top 25 teams from that year and Hawaii was one of them. I would always play in a stadium and choose snow as the weather…then I would have Sims run for like 700 yards in one game….LOL
Wonder why Spokane chose “Shock” as their team name. Isn’t that the name of the WNBA team in Detroit?
Anyways, I remember Travis Sims coming up to our offices when I was a Buyer at “Eagles” (Eagle Hardware & Garden) at Waikele. Such a proper, young man. I know he was there to take care of business, but all we could talk about was UH football. Good thing he wasn’t there to meet with me. He would’ve wasted his whole visit and gotten nothing accomplished. I definitely loved his smash-mouth style of play too.
Travis always wore shorts in Hawaii because he had difficult finding proper fitting pants because of his calves.
Liz: does that mean we won’t have to deal with pay per view anymore?

After graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1988, Hennings entered undergraduate pilot training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, as part of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) Program conducted by the 80th Flying Training Wing. The ENJJPT was considered an elite program, and when his ground training studies faltered (he had been an honor student at AFA), his squadron commander isolated him from all contact regarding the Dallas Cowboys, who had drafted him in April 1989. After UPT, Hennings completed Lead-In Fighter Training and because of his size, was eligible only for F-111, F-15 Eagle, or A-10 Thunderbolt II RTU. He became an A-10 pilot and was assigned to the 92d Tactical Fighter Squadron, a unit of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing based at RAF Bentwaters in the United Kingdom, in June 1990.
While with the 92d TFS, Hennings deployed twice to the Persian Gulf. From April to June 1991, and October 1991 to January 1992, based at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, Henning flew 45 A-10 missions in support of Operation Provide Comfort, an effort that helped provide relief and humanitarian aid to Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq. He was twice awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal, a humanitarian award and an Outstanding Unit Award for his actions in the service. He was promoted to captain on June 1, 1992.

He continued service in the Air Force Reserve for nine years as a liaison officer to the Air Force Academy after his separation from active duty, then went into the Individual Ready Reserve.
In 1992, he left the Air Force and joined the Dallas Cowboys as a 27-year-old rookie, quickly becoming a key reserve, on one of the best defensive line rotations in the NFL.

Yes you’re correct A-House, Chad did play for the Cowboys. However, not before he served his country first. Chad did two tours of duty in the Persian Gulf, before lacing up with the Cowboys. I’m not aware of any $250,000. transaction or agreement between the Air Force and the Cowboys organization.
Nobody knows where the archives are to Advertiser stories.
I do know that for the 2007 season, we made blowups of the front page of every UH game. We gave the blowups to UH media relations. I think they use the back as the white tester for videos.

Each and every time I exit the H-3 tunnels and look across Kaneohe Bay, I wonder which royal person decided to make Mokapu Island (MCBH) a permanent “kapu” place by building fish ponds to keep the “commoners” out thus forever changing the “eco-structure” of Kaneohe Bay.
A study said it currently takes 5 years for the water to circle the bay.
Proposal: build a 100-yard wide canal through the bird sanctuary to restore the flow of sea water into the bay to rejuvinate K-Bay. Construct a concrete wall on either side with rocks for the “bed” to keep costs down and create a “natural” bottom for fish and other marine life.
Wonder what it would cost and how beneficial it will be to the future of Kaneohe Bay?

At one time, Kawainui marsh used to be a great inland sea. Halau Wa’a (canoe sheds) were founds as far back as the area around Le Jardin/Old Kailua Drive In Theater. By Kamehameha’s day, the whole area had been turned into fishponds. That’s why the whole area was prone to big floods prior to the flood control dike being built.

KHON Channel 2 will show the University of Hawaii’s regular season football opener against Southern California as part of a national prime-time broadcast, a FOX Network spokesman in Los Angeles said.
Dan Bell of FOX said the Sept. 1 contest will be the “first ever regular season college football game in FOX history” to be shown nationally.
Kickoff in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Hawaii time, USC said.
It will be the first UH game shown on KHON since the 2008 Sugar Bowl.
Two UH games this season, the Sept. 28 contest at Brigham Young, and the Nov. 16 game at Air Force, will be shown on ESPN.

I believe that flying tackle by Anthony Woodson was against Utah. The quarterback lookup and just kinda crumpled to the ground.
Niko Noga was so quick he once reach through! the legs of the opposing center and ankle tackled the QB!
