Mouton, Titans agree on 4-year deal
Here’s the announcement from Kenny Zuckerman, Ryan Mouton’s agent:
Tennessee Titans 3rd round pick, Ryan Mouton agrees to terms on a four-year contract that is worth just over $2.4 million and can escalate to just over $3 million by hitting certain milestones.
“This just caps off a successful post-season by Ryan,” Zuckerman said. “He went from a projected free agent and a blip on the NFL radar to a top draft pick and it wasn’t easy. He missed a couple of games during his senior season, pulled his hamstring at the East-West Shrine All-Star game, aggravated the same hamstring at the combine and did the same at Hawaii’s pro day. In fact, he never completed a 40 yard dash healthy. However, with his tremendous upside and great character he was able to overcome all of these obstacles and still maintain to elevate his draft stock. I’m really proud of him and he deserves it!”

Cmon. Who are we kidding?
We all think the new cell phone ban is just another money-grabbing, fix-the-tax-revenue-shortfall scheme. Now, texting or reading a newspaper or doing the makapiapia-cleansing while driving isn’t such a good thing. But using the cell phone? Shucks, it probably saves lives. I know there are times I felt like falling asleep during the 3:30 p.m. gridlock on the H-1. And I guess this means the end of KSSK’s Posse.
So, in tribute to the final day of hands-on calling, today’s debate is: Which rules have irked you the most?
Here are mine:
1. Van cams.
2. Not allowing bottle caps at Aloha Stadium … including the media room. So much for the argument that the pen is mightier than the sword.
3. Ban on ThunderStix. Or, more precisely, the rule that limits offering fans more than one stick apiece. Yes, that is the answer to the riddle: What sound does a one-handed clap make?
4. Not allowing gum to be sold at the Honolulu International Airport. Yet, A-Joe was allowed to bring aboard a small scissor.
5. Van cams. Yes, it was such a stoo-pid idea it needs to be mentioned twice.

Sad to read that the WAC payout was down this year. I remember reading how several WAC teams lost money due to low bowl payouts not covering their expenses, and I guess all WAC teams have to pay for that. I do not think that UH can complain about this because I think it was reported that UH lost money on the Hawaii Bowl…so, the rest of the WAC would have to subsidize the Hawaii Bowl a little.

It was nice for BSU to get to play in the Poinsettia Bowl, and I’m sure that they enjoyed San Diego over Boise in the Winter. The WAC really worked hard to get BSU that spot and it gave the WAC another bowl spot.
However, the downside of that is that BSU’s home bowl had much lower attendance without BSU there and the WAC probably has to subsidize the shortfall for the Poinsettia Bowl too.
am glad to see that all the info about yoga usage by nfl linemen are being incorporated by the warriors. now a lesson by las vegas on anchoring their stance for leverage and speed would be very good.

I’m depressed after reading the bad news about the budget deficit rise for UH Athletics. It looks like JD cut costs significantly but revenues were just way down. Ticket prices won’t go up because of the economy, so hopefully attendance will be higher this year..but the economy could be a problem there also.
Lori and I are going to Best Buy this morning to get speakers for Momo’s computer…I found out yesterday that their speakers’ max volume is so soft that the Alexander interview segment in last week’s WB show could not be heard.

Unfortunately, cutting too many sports would result in UH dropping out of D-IA and kill the football program. Cutting a women’s sport would require 1 or 2 men’s sports to be cut and probably lose the D-IA status also.
UH could cut 1, possibly 2 men’s sports…but I’m glad JD is saving that as a last resort. The revenue sports (including men’s volleyball, which hopefully can cover their expenses eventually under Coach Wade) won’t be cut and the other men’s sports really have their expenses to a minimum

I do agree on the need for the student fee! When all other WAC schools have a student fee, it is like UH is trying to compete with one hand tied behind their back. If you add up the revenue from the student fee over the past 5-7 years if they had instituted it when times were better, UH Athletics wouldn’t have this deficit problem.
SDSU had the students vote on a student athletic fee increase 3 years ago and the students voted against it…and SDSU imposed the fee anyway. Last year SDSU students voted against a student athletic fee increase…and SDSU imposed the fee anyway. My point is that the power-that-be (the folks above JD in the org chart) have the power to start the Athletic fee, but they have refused to do so so far. They also don’t seem to be doing anything to convince the students about the benefits of the fee…everybody seems to be bending over backwards for ASUH.

I would think that yoga & stretching would help reduce those hammie strains. I’ve always thought that tai chi/push hands would help receivers build a better sense of people around them. Perhaps it was just my tai chi teacher, but we learned to ‘feel’ the energy from people around us, esp. during push hands, and then use your opponents energy to push them away.

I am not clear on all the details on cutting a sport, but my gut tells me I don’t love the idea of a profitable program essentially subsidizing unprofitable programs so they can remain in existence. Leaving aside the recent government bail-outs, doesn’t that cut against the capitalistic principles that form the basis of our economy?
I think a few college sports attract a paying crowd, but most others are better suited for club teams and intramural programs, and I don’t see anything wrong with letting the little sports drowning in red ink fail.

The camp roysan16 speaks of is working out in Kapiolani park this morning. Yesterday they started at 2 PM. One of my nephews attended with the same group of guys in an All Poly camp in Utah a few weeks back. He said that some were in attendance yesterday because their registration carried over to this one.
Was too busy to really talk with him yesterday, but he’ll let me know how things are going at the camp.
Homes ~ mebbe a little push-pull, Yoga class demonstrated by the Rainbow Dancers would by an extra incentive to motivate the boys at camp. It certainly couldn’t do any harm!

I think the problem with the UH budget is that there’s no cause-and-effect aftermath.
In a time when the government is a 13 figures in the red, we’re all quite jaded, especially since UH seems to operate as usual. I mean, if UH can’t land a top cornerback because of a lack of money, then maybe there might be some empathy.
But what does $2.6 million in the hole really mean when a new men’s volleyball coach was signed to a five-year deal, 15-year-olds are offered scholarships and the Lower Campus is being painted in green?

The best part of the van cams was the people’s revolt.
Some people would get out of their cars, and drape a blanket in front of the camera, while other cars sped by, offering the one-finger salute.
I think most were miffed that an outside company was used to hire speed trappers to sit in vans and monitor traffic.
Today also is the last day for Pat Charity, Dallas Bolla and Kevin Hashiro as UH employees.

2. What would you think if a whole section of fans at the UNLV game in September rose up and did the ha’a with the team?
Track & Field does not generate revenues while the student-athlete is in school; however, it’s the best way to develop an Olympic-level athlete. Look what Bryan Clay has done for Hawai’i.
Student athletic fees are a must if there’s any intention of supporting a quality NCAA program. I don’t think that $25 a semester is out of line, especially if it includes free and discounted tickets.

Van cams:
I am very much in the minority, but I really wanted the van coms to stay as it was the only means to slow down drivers when all else failed – speed bumps, digital signs with your speed, $750 K Nuuanu signs, ocassional police with radar, people holding slow down signs, etc.
Officer discretion to let VIPs, other police officers and their family, pretty women,and individuals with a certain calling card could no longer be protected from speeding.
Individuals and certain radio stations advocated notifying others of the location of the van cams and I noticed that a certain radio station and Senator from the Windward side quickly toned down their rhetoric when they realized that they were contributing to speeding. This would have been a strong case to name them in any civil action as a 3rd party defendant should a person be severly injured or dies in an auto accident where speed was involved.
The “slow lane” of Pali Hwy, after Waokanaka, heading Kaneohe is used by many as the speed/passing lane – usually exceeding 65 MPH.

Not just speeders but have notice how many people run the red light at intersections knowing they have a few seconds delay before opposing light turns green. Not running yellows but reds. I think it is time for traffic cams at least where there is a high incidence of accidents.
Another pet peeve is the idiots that block the intersections @ Piikoi and Lunalilo, they should station a police officer there with a digital camera take a pictuere of the liscence plate and mail the driver a ticket, imagine how much revenue they could add to the State General Fund 3 tickets every 90 seconds = 120 tickets an hour x $100 an average ticket = $12,000 x 5-6 hours a day that it is a big problem = $72,000/ day x 365 = $26,280,000 a year just from that one intersection.
By the way anyone can explain to me why when police write tickets the fines go to the State General Fund and not the city who pays the officers ???

Can you reflect on his career and what inspiration he gave you with his talent and work ethic?
TIGER WOODS: Yeah. Michael going into the Hall of Fame, that was a given. That was a no-brainer, wasn’t it? Greatest basketball player to ever live.
You know, getting to know Michael over the years has been a lot of fun. I call him my big brother. To be able to call him and pick his brain on anything at any time and we’ve done that, you know, and he doesn’t sleep, like me. Yep, some studies have shown that a muscle that’s over stretched has a harder time contracting quickly. Also, for athletes, overly flexible joints (like knees) can lead to injuries…there needs to be a certain amount of support when running. Problem lies in defining what’s “too much” flexibility.

How is Coach Shaw different from all your previous O-line coaches? Teaching approach on techniques, footwork, philosophy, attitude?
Speaking of rules, there was a proposed one about taxing drivers on the mileage they accumulate.
That I don’t agree with and I rarely disagree with a lot of rules or I just don’t care… For example, I am a smoker and the smoking ban set into place a while ago never bothered me and still doesn’t to this day.
I just drove by the stadium and they are painting it green! Are they going to change the whole color scheme?
I too drive by it everyday to and from work and honestly I heard the color green you see is the primer. Not sure how much they will finish before the start of the season as looks like they’ll be content with only half of the mauka sideline roof and the whole North end zone roof.
The rest is still in that stale rust brown color and it will look WORSE should they leave it as is unless they’ll either finish the ENTIRE roof before September or they’ll finish it next summer. I don’t know.
Even if the entire roof were to be that dark green, the rest of the stadium would need an over-haul as well to match otherwise you’d have two different colors (i.e. one new and one OLD).

So what was the difference with today’s video of the WB show? It didn’t have the fits & starts that the others do. I tried to watch the WB interview w/ Greg A. last week in the middle of the night last night and it was so bad I never got past Greg’s answer to the first question. So, I’ve still not been able to view the entire show. TODAY was a different story. Can you guys figure out what works & continue using those techniques, please. It’s not because it was on the UH campus, is it?

Hi, Gang, back in action again. Had a little bit of a bad spot, but all is copathetic again. Lots of catching up to do. I’m ready for Football already. 10 wins minimum this year, for sure.
I think the UH receivers, as a group, are the most athletic UH has ever had. Time will tell whether that translates into less drops, more YAC, more first downs, and more TDs, but no doubt the potential is there. I hope the coaches platoon the guys to keep a fresh four on the field as much as possible. Since I doubt few of our opponents can go two deep in their secondary, we could have a huge advantage here.

3) No Balloon Brigade at Stan Sherrif Center

Re: Van Cams
Cameras are all over the roads here in Arizona, especially in Metro Phoenix. Not only are there van cams, but fixed speed cameras on the freeways, fixed speed cameras on side streets, and red-light cameras on side streets.
I believe AZ is the only state in the country that has speed cameras on the freeways. The only caveat here is that state law mandates that there must be a sign at least 300 ft. away signalling an upcoming photo enforcement camera. The distaste for photo enforcement cameras is so great that a camera maintenance worker was shot and killed a couple months back by a disgruntled passing driver.
State legislators have been trying to ram legislation to deactivate the photo enforcement program once the contract with the third-party vendor expires next year, but what they should be doing is focusing on the state budget.
Speaking of which, the Arizona fiscal year ends in…..oh…..about six hours. No ‘mo budget for upcoming fiscal year. State government shutdown inevitable unless the legislators get their heads out of their collective rear-ends and get something together…..at least try to pass a continuing resolution to buy some time.
I’m glad we don’t have intersection cameras.
Say, you want to make a left turn. You go halfway through the intersection, wait and wait and wait. Then you make the left. Usually on the yellow.
The camera doesn’t know this and, lookie-lookie, you’re in the intersection on a red.

My stance on van and photo enforcement cameras:
You like speed? Go ahead. Just no complain when you get caught.
A few years ago there was a motion to have Piikoi and Pensacola switch directions. That would make a lot of sense. That way the mauka-bound drivers can make a quick left onto the freeway instead of having to go an extra block.
Too bad the idea didn’t pass.

I was racking my brain all day trying to think of something that REALLY truly irks me and that rule is the one!
I try to adhere to it as much as possible, but around here at the corner of Mahukona St. and Kapiolani I see people getting tagged by HPD quite often for that violation and we’re talking about the last person crossing the street with like a yard left to go before the sidewalk and people are getting pulled over for it.

I had the good fortune to talk story with John Estes’ father and brother at the Warriors Rally event before the Sugar Bowl and to talk with John’s mom on the phone for a couple of different reasons. He has a good family and you can see the positive influences and good examples that they set for him.

I would think that getting guests would also be easier if they did the shows on the UH campus. However, I think that ST mentioned that they are doing the show for free, so traveling to UH each week for the show could be a lot to ask. Also, the film and tech crew might not be available each week.
Maybe the biggest problem is that during the school year the rooms on campus might all be taken during the middle of the day. There are much less students on campus in the summer and probably a lot more availability for rooms now.
I think they were doing the show from the Stan Sheriff Center, so there probably wouldn’t be any concern with regards to studio space.

I think the bobble heads were “in the likeness” of Timmy, Lily and Kim. they didn’t have any names on them. I think thats how schools can sell jersey’s with the popular numbers on them and not get in trouble.
if there’s any reference to the actual player, then its illegal.
thats why the EA Sports NCAA football game can only use the numbers for players and you have to type the full rosters out to give them names. its also cool that they program into the game the pronunciation of certain players to give it a more real life like game experience.

how come not much comment on UH’s 2.58 million deficit in athletics? HA has a poll, are we at the NCAA minimum of 7 teams or can we cut a men and/or women sport. JD doesn’t want to cut any program, but reality should overcome emotions, he needs to make the tough call to balance the budget or reduce the deficit markedly. add 2.58 to the outstanding 5 million outstanding, deep kim chee for the UHAD.

I say drop a program, men first, if can, women..collect a student fee, don’t ask ASUH, just do it..energize and mandate wbb, mbb, baseball and mvb to increase revenue- set revenue levels rather than wins and losses, why, we win, fans will come..baseball won and played exciting early in the season and the fans came out in droves. Coaches can’t put fans in the seats because of team performance, find new coaches…don’t blame the economy, the attendance was down before the economy tanked…

I think the legislature is trying to raise revenue the wrong way. They should raise criminal fines tenfold. Cell phone violations @ $67 shud be $670. That should stop them. Jaywalking $820. Littering $1,000. Prostitution & DUI $10,000. Drug trafficking $100,000. They’d fill the state coffers pronto and reduce the stupidity out there. Who could complain? Wouldn’t have to charge fees, gas tax, bus fare etc. etc. etc.

Simon Cowell apparently has been offered up to $144 million per year (really just 4 to 5 months!) to be a judge on American Idol. I made some comments at the top of the blog, but have been really busy almost all of the day or I would have commented further. I really wish we had some time to talk about this in depth–maybe next CC I get to attend I’ll make sure to sit right across from you so we can talk about these issues and some other things you bring up.
Let me do some research on this issue…
According to a February 20, 2009 entry on my blog, a quote from an Advertiser article mentions that UH has 7 men’s sports. The NCAA requires (click on my name for the link) that a D-IA school have a minimum of 16 varsity sports, with a minimum of 6 men’s or mixed gender teams.
Sorry lava, that means that one or two revenue sports (normally just football and basketball) subsidize all the rest of the sports…and if you don’t subsidize those sports then you are kicked out of D-IA and end up bringing in almost nothing for football!
UH has 11 women’s sports, 1 co-ed team (sailing), and 7 men’s sports. Cutting a women’s team would require cutting at least 1, possibly 2 men’s teams to equalize the scholarships. That would make things really close to being kicked out of D-IA.
Actually, I just read an Advertiser article from February that said that UH cannot cut a women’s sport until it comes into compliance with Title IX. So, forget the possibility of cutting a women’s sport.

So, cutting a men’s team is possible. The men’s sports are football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, swimming & diving, and golf.
I agree with el guapo’s post #89 in the 4/19 WB blog where he said that the likely candidates would be tennis or swimming. Trouble is, like I said in post #22 today I think that those sports have their expenses at a minimum and cutting them really isn’t going to make a dent in the $2.58 mil deficit.
Plus, if a few mainland schools have to cut men’s volleyball due to their budget crisis (which is hitting California especially hard this year due to budget cuts, and a large portion of men’s volleyball programs are in California), then men’s volleyball probably will lose their D-IA status. If that happens, UH may not be able to cut any other sport and keep the D-IA status.

Hi! I finished all my work that I needed to get done before my flight tomorrow and I’m just doing laundry now, so I have a lot of free time to do some research. I wish I could remember where I stored the list of revenues vs. expenses for all sports from last year’s audit, which would show exactly how much each of the non-revenue sports lost last year.
People like brew808 or Jason are much better at looking that stuff up. Maybe I would have better luck finding those numbers if I wasn’t so tired!

We had an interesting discussion that day…you can click on my name on #158 to see our discussion. Your analysis is probably correct about which sport would be cut first.
However, cutting a men’s sport really won’t make much of a dent in that huge deficit. UH is either going to get a huge revenue stream somewhere new, or they will have to get money from the school (not likely!), state (not that likely), or via a student fee. Some cuts will have to be made to show progress…if I had to guess I’d guess that the hotel stays before home football games would be cut (BSU never did that and some conferences are lobbying to make that a nationwide rule) and maybe a sport would need to be cut before certain powers-that-be got really serious about helping athletics.
I actually get to see Rich this weekend. He was nice enough to let me pick up my ticket and pay him this weekend when my wife and kids get to spend some time with him.

Last week sometime you said something about using a new stadium in LA for a neutral site for a football game. That’s an even better idea than the one that day about using Las Vegas (the city, not the famous rikishi) as a home-away-from-home. LV is already an established base for UH fans, LA is a whole new world to build upon, and football games make more money. I was thinking about something like that but for the smaller sports instead, and for the athletes to keep up with their classes via internet or webcam or something.

Good point in #170, but we need for the new stadium in LA to be built first. Once that is built (and that could be fairly soon), they will be looking for teams to play in it…the Cowboys new stadium is giving HUGE amounts of money for college teams to play there. The Dallas-area teams aren’t available to their stadium, so they have to look for outside teams.
A similar thing could work with UH playing a neutral site game in a new LA stadium. USC and UCLA already have their home stadiums, so the LA stadium would need to look outside of LA for teams. It would have to be an appealing game–say, UH vs. BSU or UH vs. Fresno State…though it would be even better if it was a nonconference game (UH vs. Navy or UH vs. BYU?).

Re-UH Develops Marketing Campaigns For 2009-10 Men’s & Women’s Sports
Looking at the UH athletic site I see that the school has started a marketing campaign. This is fine. They even adopted the idea that the school is playing for you. Again, fine. What doesn’t grab me is the corresponding picture or logo (?). It doesn’t captivate me at all.And to me it doesn’t make sense. If the school is trying to convey the message of “we play for you” a compilation of students in action in the various sports would have been a lot better presentation as picture or logo . Having the greater impact to the viewer is when you can feel the personality, excitement and the esprit de corp of a message–looking into the athletes eyes you certainly could have a feel for that. This type of picture would be more gravitating and beckoning to than the one they currently have. JMO.
